Thornton Parks Director, from Zambia to Eastlake — and places in between A Global Connection As a youth I grew up in Zambia, Africa. Growing up in Southern Africa I first hand experienced, even after five years of independence, what life under a system of apartheid was like. We were always taught to stand up against it and to this day whenever I see injustice I speak up, even at my own peril.

As an adult I spent many years in Iowa, going to school and having my first professional job there. I had worked in Colorado prior and a job opening brought me back in 2019. My wife’s side of the family populates the Front Range, from Casper to Salida.

Abroad and at home Travelling is in my blood having been in over 40 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America. My favorite is Zambia—the weather, the people, the beauty of the landscape, and the music.

Locally, I love Eastlake Nature Preserve off 128th Avenue. The mountains and the diversity of the community from cultural aspects to the economy and the ability to be outdoors year round. I and the family travel quite a bit and we will have to rethink all of that in the new reality. We have visited 36 states and 107 of the national parks and monuments, thus far.

Nationally, the Grand Canyon is a place I have been nine times. Internationally, it is Zambia.

My Love for Parks and Recreation I am the Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Programs in the City of Thornton overseeing the Divisions of Arts and Culture, Neighborhood Services, Older Adult Programs, Community Engagement, Parks, Recreation, and Projects and Planning.

I got into parks and recreation having worked in it paying my way through university. When the opportunity came after graduation to run an ice arena, I began my full time career in parks and recreation and enjoyed it ever since.

we have in the community from better health and wellness, increased property values, greater economic activity, creation of social equity, and overall seeing the smile on the faces of our patrons when they have been through one of our facilities, programs, or amenities.

Natural art Recently, we cut down a damaged tree at Woodglen Brookshire Park. Instead of chipping it I worked with staff to place it in the park facing Madison Street, upside down as a piece of art and a natural playground.

Thornton is a great place to live, work, play, and retire and is made so, among others, by the daily efforts of the park and recreation professionals.

Thornton is lucky to have great connectivity to the green spaces, with over 93% of the population having access to a park or green space within a tenminute walk of their residence.

Record holder I like to go on long walks, bike, play golf, soccer and tennis but do not belong to any clubs. I still hold the 100-meter dash record in high school after forty years.

My Family (I am very proud of) the three wonderful kids my wife and I have and the way they have turned out to be worldly, inquisitive, and overall with big hearts.

Work on RTD’s Northern Metro Commuter rail line is set to reach a new stage this month as testing on the tracks and trains moves to every 30 minutes.

Project Manager Lisa Trujillo said plans call for the rail line, connecting downtown Denver with Northglenn and Thornton, to open in September.

“It means we are running more frequently than we have been,” Trujillo said. “We are in a little bit of a holding pattern, but we’ll know just when that starts in the next couple of weeks.”

Trujillo said the bulk of the work on the track construction done and crews are working on details now.

“It’s mostly punch-list items, like when you get a new home and have to go back in and do some last projects,” she said. “They do a drive through and then go back and adjust and double check and then re-check. It’s that kind of work now.”

The N-Line was announced in 2013 and was originally scheduled to begin service in 2018. Track testing began in March 2019, with powered cars moving along the route in April. That testing has continued ever since, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday — with occasional Saturdays as well.

The 13-mile-long route leaves Union Station and travels northeast to the National Western Center at 48th and Brighton. There, it turns north and snakes it way through Commerce City and Northglenn before ending at Thornton’s Eastlake Station at about 124th and Claude Court.

There are five stops between the Eastlake and Union Station stops and plans call for the trains to run every 20 minutes during morning and evening rushes, taking 29 minutes from Eastlake south to Union Station. Train service will run every 30 minutes during off-peak hours.

RTD has plans to extend rail service north to Highway 7 eventually.

The train will run from 4 a.m. to 1 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 4 a.m to 2:30 a.m. on Fridays, according to the current schedule. Service will run from 5 a.m to 2:30 a.m. Saturdays and from 5 a.m. to midnight on Sundays.

Trujillo said the COVID-19 outbreak has done little to slow the work.

“It has continued, but I do believe we’ve had to be cautious to make sure the contractors had proper (protective equipment),” she said. “But I know things are moving along.”

Northglenn offers free masks City hosting June events to giveaway masks, goodie bags

Northglenn officials will give residents 12 opportunities to get free face masks at a series events in June.

Residents can drive through Northglenn Marketplace between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. June 13 to get a free mask.

The city will combine the mask giveaways with food truck stops and goody bag distributions beginning June 23. They will have to show proof that they are Northglenn residents to get a mask, according to a city press release.

The city will host food trucks from 4-7 p.m. June 23, 26 and 30 at four different locations. Masks and the goody bags will be distributed to residents at

each of those stops.

The food trucks will be at Wyco Park, 11651 Wyco Dr., at Huron Crossing Park 509 W. 116th Way, at Danahy Park at Roseanna and Livingston drives and at Central Park in the Fox Run neighborhood.

The City Council adopted a directive May 18 requiring anyone three-yearsold or older to cover their mouth and nose with a cloth covering when in a Northglenn business or government building, waiting to enter them or when they are outside but unable to keep social distant from others.

“I think the evidence is clear that wearing a face covering offers protection against the spread of COVID-19,” said Mayor Meredith Leighty. “I am very pleased our council chose to pass this resolution, and am confident our community will support this measure that protects the health of residents, essential workers, and especially those most vulnerable to COVID-19.”

Colorado may consider small-business relief fund Restaurants now allowed to reopen across the state

Eateries across Colorado are now allowed to resume sit-down service, but Gov. Jared Polis acknowledged “the pain our restaurants have been through” during the state’s closure of dine-in service.

“And that means everybody,” Polis said at a May 26 news conference. “It means, of course, restaurant owners, but it also means chefs, sous chefs, bussers, wait staff, greeters” and other workers associated with restaurants.

The day before, Polis announced that restaurants could reopen for limited in-person dining as of May 27.

In response to a Colorado Community Media reporter’s question during the May 26 news conference, Polis didn’t say the state could provide immediate financial assistance to help restaurants survive. But he expressed desire to work with the state Legislature on a small-business relief fund and hopes the federal government can offer more help.

“Many restaurants are participating in the (federal) Paycheck Protection Program, but as originally constructed, it didn’t work perfectly for them because they didn’t have a big payroll or any payroll in some cases during the time period where they were closed,” Polis said.

He added: “We hope there’s a piece in the next federal legislation that applies specifically to tourism businesses (and) to restaurants.”

Colorado’s restaurant industry accounts for more than 294,000 jobs, or roughly 10% of statewide employment, according to Polis’ presentation.

In authorizing restaurants to resume dine-in operations, Polis said in a May 25 statement that the state is “still a long way from returning to normal, but these updates are a step in the right direction because Coloradans are doing a good job so far limiting our social interactions.”

He added: “If we can continue staying at home as much as possible,

• Use disposable single-use menus or menu boards, or create online menus for guests to review.

• Provide single-use or single-serving condiments.

• Disinfect restrooms every hour and provide hand sanitizer at check-in area and throughout venue.

Colorado on March 16 ordered bars and restaurants to stop dine-in service for 30 days — still allowing delivery, take-out and drive-through service — in a bid to slow the spread of COVID-19.

But extensions of the shutdown have kept restaurants and bars closed — except in counties with waivers from state requirements — until now.

linger Highlands Cemetery in Thornton offered a slimmed-down service for Memorial Day 2020, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing guidelines but that didn’t stop local veterans and their families from marking the day.

The cemetery usually offers patriotic music and speeches to remember veterans’ service on Memorial Day. This year, the American Legion Post 22, based in Northglenn, was on-hand to offer a traditional 21-gun salute and local scouts decorated Veteran’s graves with flags for the holiday.

Anythink’s Library patrons can now pick up books at the curb as the library district looks to open their doors July 1.

Library Director Pam Sandlian-Smith said the library’s branches planned to begin curbside delivery June 1. Library patrons can go on to Anythink’s website, www.anythinklibraries.org, to browse books and DVDs. “They’ll have to place a hold on their books from home, and then they can pick up their holds curbside, just like everybody has been doing with restaurants,“ Sandlian-Smith said. “Then can drive to their local branch and pick their books up. We can’t let them in the building yet, but they can drive up and get them.“ People will call a number when the get to their branch to have their books brought outside.

“People are really ready to get back to the library,“ she said. “We have offered to mail books to them, but they told us

delivery ready,“ she said. “And then we have whole teams working on the next phase, which will be limited opening, some services and the numbers of people allowed in.“ She said curbside services will continue through June , with a tentative opening with restrictions in place set for July 1. Each of Anythink’s seven branches will have their own limits on how many people can come in at a time.

Foster care experts worry about safety during COVID-19 Drop in hotline calls shows need for community awareness

Colorado child safety experts say that a drop in the number of calls to child abuse hotlines since the COVID-19 outbreak has them concerned.

“We usually field about 60 calls per day,” said Kaleo George, a Jefferson County certified foster parent and trainer. “Now we get around 15.”

George said she has never seen the volume of calls dip this low in her seven years of working with Jefferson, Douglas, and Arapahoe counties. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Colorado in March, the Colorado Department of Human Services has reported a 50 percent decrease in the number of hotline calls for Child Abuse and Neglect.

Elizabeth Aznar, Certification Caseworker with the Collaborative Foster Care Program, said she in-home schooling could be one factor in the decrease.

“One reason for this is that there are not as many eyes on kids, especially mandated reporters,” Aznar said.

Restaurants are now able to open with limited seating, with different parties spaced at least 6 feet apart, and the state is encouraging local officials to allow expanded outdoor seating options. Polis has suggested cities and counties should consider seating on sidewalks, parking lots and even streets. Municipal parking areas could also be an option, he said.

“That’s really the only way, with the spacing, that we’re going to have a thriving restaurant” industry, Polis said at a May 18 news conference. He added: Restaurants “simply can’t stay in business with a quarter or half capacity.”

Polis also hopes restaurants would expand on their own property outdoors and on adjacent or nonadjacent private plots nearby, as

placements, the lack of reporting means kids are potentially at risk, she said.

Governor Polis’ latest “Safer at Home” Order has allowed nonessential businesses to reopen, while schools, churches and other large community programs are opening more gradually.

That order needs to be narrower, she said.

“Safer At Home specifically relates to the pandemic crisis, but we need to figure out ways to say connected with the most vulnerable in our neighborhoods,” she said.

Parents that are either working from home or have been laid off must still engage their children with at-home learning, and that can lead to tension.

The potential for abuse and neglect intensifies.

“A lot of parents don’t have the skills they need to juggle what is now expected of them,” George said.

Leaning on community Community involvement ensures parents and children have the education, nutritional, and financial tools they need, she said, and that’s more than just an opinion, she said. George, her husband Benjamin and their three biological children have housed 12 foster children over the last seven years.

They constantly lean on their close friends and faith congregation for help. They even bought a house adja-

cent to another family who also fosters kids. Both families share a backyard and their kids float in and out of each house with ease and familiarity. The adults listen to and care for each other through every hurdle faced.

George has also forged relationships with biological parents and seen her foster kids successfully reunited with their parents. This result of the foster care program has only deepened her belief that a strong community builds healthier families.

“We get attached to the kids placed with us,” George said. “They deserve that.”

There are struggles. Learning how to live with children from varying socio-economic backgrounds, religious affiliations, differing personalities, and conflicting value systems has certainly challenged her family.

“My biological kids have coping skills that many people don’t learn until adulthood,” George said. “But I’m also very intentional in asking for help. I know the places I can go when I need it.”

Knowing where to go for assistance could make all the difference to struggling families as the effects of the pandemic will linger into the summer months. The state’s Executive Order D 2020-049, which extended the closure of ski resorts, has expired, the release said. Ski resorts may work to secure approval from their local authorities in order to open.

COVID-19 Charitable Giving - A Refresher and Update

any of us these days are less concerned about ourselves and more concerned about the ways that our family, friends and others are coping GUEST with the effects COLUMN of the COVID-19 Fran Coet pandemic. That general attitude is part of what makes Westminster, Arvada and neighboring towns such great places to live. To the degree we are able, we try to help those in the greatest need.

We are all aware of family and friends who have lost jobs, who may close their businesses, who struggled with bureaucracy and systems they never dreamed they would deal with - quarantine, school closures, unemployment. How can we help?

And, if we help, it’s fair to ask, will any of our giving qualify as a charitable contribution when we file our

tax returns next year?

In short: It depends. Congress and the federal government have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by allowing a maximum $300 charitable deduction above the line (in other words, you get the standard deduction AND up to $300). The government has also lifted the restriction for qualified charitable gifting deductions to 100% of your adjusted gross income, up from 60%, for 2020. To be a “qualified contribution,” it must be made in CASH (or check or credit card - in other words, not non-cash such as an automobile) to organizations such as public schools, or those designated as 501(c)(3). Go to IRS.gov for a full description of qualifying organizations.

It’s important to note, you cannot deduct donations that you make to an individual. Nor to a “Go Fund Me.” And — for those of you who may be a bit more sophisticated in this area

- not for 503(a)(3) organizations (you have to check with the organization) and NOT to donor-advised funds.

Further, contributions to a charitable remainder trust are generally not “qualified contributions” unless the charitable remainder interest is paid to an eligible charity during 2020.

Organization versus individuals In a tax court case a couple of years ago, parishioners of a church tried to assist their pastor with large, unexpected medical bills. One parishioner tried to claim it as a charitable contribution, and we can agree it was certainly within the spirit of how things should work.

But the court ruled that if he wanted a tax deduction, he would have had to donate directly to the church, NOT the individual.

So, here are the rules effective for all cash, check, or credit card charge contributions: we must obtain and keep

a bank record or a written communication from the charity as a record of the contribution. Written records personally prepared (such as check registers or personal notations) are no longer sufficient, and the records must show date paid, name of the charity, and amount of the payment. There are additional bookkeeping (and other) requirements for deductions of more than $250 and of more than $5,000.

Check with your accountant if you need those details, or if you’re just not sure whether your donation qualifies for a tax deduction.

Bottom line: Don’t let these nuances in the tax law prevent you from acting on your spirit of generosity and helpfulness in these difficult times. But be sure to treat yourself right whenever you can, too.

Mines professors building app to predict likelihood of catching COVID-19 Another is studying how stay-at-home orders have impacted streams

Colorado School of Mines professors have received two National Science Foundation grants for projects related to COVID-19, including one effort to produce a mobile app that could be used to predict how likely someone is to suffer dangerous complications if they get the disease.

Judith Klein-Seetharaman, the director of bioscience and bioengineering at Mines, and Hua Wang, an associate professor of computer science at the school, are teaming up on the effort to develop the compuKleinSeetharaman tational model that will provide the foundation for the app, which will synthesize patient data to create a model to predict future COVID-19 outcomes.

“We are going to use existing COVID-19-related patient data and proteomics data and develop McCray a computational model that will take all of the different types of risk factors into account such as comorbidities, lifestyle factors, symptoms and behavioral information,” said Klein-Seetheraman. “And we will develop a model from this and then an individual or a physician will be able to enter this information to give a score for that person.”

That score will then indicate the person’s probability of getting COVID-19 or, if they already have the disease, their likelihood of developing

complications. A high score would mean someone should call a doctor because they are likely to be infected or develop complications, Klein-Seetharaman said.

The pair said they are hoping to have a first version of the app, which will be called iCOVID and made available for free on the iTunes app store and Google play, up and running in five or six weeks. However, they said the grant funding they have received lasts for one year, which will allow the pair to improve the model and app interface while incorporating user feedback.

So far, one of the pair’s main challenges has been the difficulty accessing patient data, which hospitals usually do not make available for privacy reasons. To get around those concerns, the team has used anonymized data from medical databases, which still presents an obstacle since it can take awhile for COVID-19-related patient data to become available.

Klein-Seetharaman said she contacted Wang, who she worked with on other projects, about bringing his expertise to the project when she realized how many factors seem to be involved in COVID-19 risk. Wang’s research focuses on machine learning, which is the study of computer algorithms that improve automatically through experience and can be used to synthesize complex data.

“So, when we work together we can use the machine learning knowledge from my side as well as the experience and knowledge from Judy’s side to collectively build some more useful tools,” said Wang.

But while the app will be able to help someone who gets a cough determine the likelihood that they have COVID-19, Klein-Seetharaman said the app could also be utilized for planning by hospitals and even governments.

“Hospitals need to be able to predict how many beds they need and how many respirators they need and so

on and our app could potentially help with that by helping to predict what is the chance that you are going to have N number of patients with complications,” she said. “And then it can also be used by local and even global governments to evaluate what the risk is and what we need to plan for.”

John McCray, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, also received a NSF grant for a project that will study the impact of Colorado’s stay-at-home orders on the quality of urban streams in metro Denver.

“The COVID-19 pandemic could potentially accelerate future sustainable living practices into typical living scenarios,” McCray wrote in a section of his proposal included in an article on the Mines website.

“Research is underway looking at air pollution but little has been done to understand the impacts on water quality. Cleaner, fishable and swimmable urban rivers would be another justification for sustainable living that includes working from home and much less driving. The information will also be useful to urban planners

MINES STUDENT WORKING ON LOW-COST VENTILATOR

A Colorado School of Mines student is developing a low-cost ventilator that could be used in health care facilities around the world where traditional ventilators are too costly and cumbersome or otherwise unavailable.

Grant Kahl, a freshman in Mine’s electrical engineering program, started working on the P-Vent in mid-March at his home in San Antonio. Within 24 hours, he and a high school friend had a working prototype.

According to a story posted to the School of Mines website, the P-Vent uses a bag valve mask, or Ambu bag, a commonly used manual resuscitator that provides positive pressure ventilation to patients who are not able to breathe adequately on their own. regarding types of green infrastructure for cleaning urban water, and to public health officials and legislators for urban water quality management.”

Steaks, salons and state parks: Thoughts on reopening CROSS CURRENTS

ey Colorado, things are incrementally opening back up! While it might seem like a year ago, in reality, it is more like 2½ months since we have had the opportunity to go to a dine-in restaurant and have a good steak and baked potato.

While I am tired of so many meals at home with a few take-out dinners, I am somewhat reticent about eating at a restaurant. Regardless, we will look forward to eating out and hope that all of our favorite places survived.

What are your thoughts on returning to eating out now that the virus has left its mark?

New norms are unfolding While we still have a journey to realize

the full new normal — whatever that might be — we are making progress on the road to reopening. Notice that I did not say “recovery”. I’m afraid recovery is a much longer and more challenging journey and of course will vary among businesses, schools, sporting events, retailers, governmental services, churches, entertainment, tourism, travel and many other categories.

Let’s recount where Colorado stood as of May 27th: Non-essential businesses and retailers are open for business if they so choose. It somewhat surprises me that more businesses and retailers have not opened their doors yet. In addition, the Coronavirus has taken a toll on some businesses as they have declared permanent closure or filed for bankruptcy. J.C. Penney’s, Pier 1, Nordstrom’s, Lord and Taylor and Sweet

Tomatoes restaurant chain come to mind.

Restaurants and bars which serve food or arrange for a food truck are now open if they so choose. Golf courses are back open and flourishing. Hotels and motels are coming back while some folks are thinking again about travelling. My preference for the time being will be “road trips” avoiding air travel. There is so much to see in our own state and region to keep us entertained and on the go.

To activate the card, I had to call an 800 number.

I guess they’re kind of busy.

At least that’s what I was told over and over and over. It was mind-numbing. I thought it might be a tactic. One of many.

Eventually, I spoke with a customer service representa-

tive. She asked me everything except my birth weight.

Then came a series of questions. She wanted to know what state someone I have never heard of lived in.

And who “Micah” was.

I correctly answered the question about the make, model and year of my car, but it wasn’t good enough and I was denied activation.

However, something else was activated: my aggravation.

I thought it was pretty clever to issue cards rather than a paper check, which could have been deposited directly.

Maybe you already know this: according to cnbc.com, “Half of Americans currently own unredeemed gift cards or store credits and that adds up to tens of billions in unused money. More than one-third with unused cards won’t use up all of the funds.”

Now, we need recreation centers, fitness centers, libraries and movie theatres to be able to open. However, we learned that movie theatre chains weren’t on real solid financial ground before the virus and now there is speculation that movies streaming live, like on Netflix and other streaming services, will be the death knell for the movie theaters.

It’s a shame that we won’t have the benefit of Water World this summer both from the standpoint of entertainment and relaxation, but also the loss of approximately 1,000 summer jobs for youth.

One of the things which the virus has brought back wherever they still exist is drive-in movie theatres.

I wish we still had one or more to enjoy. I can remember three in the Westminster/Thornton/Broomfield area many years ago.

Our great outdoors is critical to Colorado’s recovery Given all of the benefits of being outdoors in Colorado, it is a time for celebrating that our state parks are now open and our national parks like Rocky Mountain National Park, Mesa Verde and the Great Sand Dunes are phasing in their opening.

Hiking, fishing and camping in our beautiful outdoors are a reality again. These park openings will give a much needed shot in the arm for such Colorado communities as Estes Park, Alamosa, Pagosa Springs, Cortez and Durango.

Next up will likely be professional sports doing some type of an abbreviated season. The National Hockey

Oh, did I mention there will NOT be any fans in the arenas or stadiums? At least we can watch on television! And let’s not forget that the State Legislature is back in session and Arapahoe Basin even opened for spring skiing.

Don’t let scofflaws dissuade you There’s more that I could recite, but you can appreciate the point that I am making.

We are little by little seeing the new normal take shape with each executive order from the governor or public health agency.

Needless to say, all of these reopened places and spaces require wearing your facial covering, keeping social distancing and perhaps getting a body temperature check in selected situations.

While the usual 5% of the population ignore the concept of “the greater good” and refuse to follow the rules, the rest of us will comply.

Recent incidents showing crowded beaches in Florida and California and even crowded conditions along Boulder Creek here in Colorado can’t help but make you wonder about how people think (or maybe they don’t think or care). Perseverance is the key.

In the long run, we will get through this together!!

tunately, many local outdoor commemorative events which normally draw crowds of people had to be curtailed to honor our fallen military heroes.

However, two televised events really struck me. First, was highlighting the playing of taps all across America at 3 p.m.on Memorial Day on the CBS Nightly News. Thousands of brass players performed the 24 note sobering music to honor American fallen heroes. It was played in a plethora of different venues “from sea to shining sea.” It truly moved my soul.

Then Channel 9 with Gary Sharipo narrated an excellent piece commemorating the purpose of this special day. We need these poignant reminders to stop and remember the real purpose of such holidays. It isn’t cooking the hot dogs or playing the round of golf or a pickup game of whiffle ball in the backyard. It’s honoring our military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice to assure our freedom.

Perhaps a Westminster focus on Memorial Day 2021?

As a suggestion to the City of Westminster leadership, perhaps for next year your expanded public information/ public relations personnel could produce a video about the purpose and activities that embrace Memorial Day. While Westminster does have the ceremony at the Armed Forces Tribute Garden which is always done in a class manner, many more people would have the opportunity to view a locally produced video.

Since the city administration previously ramped up with more personnel including a full-time videographer, a focus on the holiday and its connection to Westminster would be a meaningful piece.

Anyway, it’s something to ponder.

I recommend Laura Hillenbrand’s book, “Seabiscuit: An American Legend,” but not the film based on the book, or the 1949 Shirley Temple film “The Story of Seabiscuit.”

Watch it for actual footage of some of Seabiscuit’s races and skip the parts where Temple swoons over the jockey.

The debit cards, as an alternative to easily deposited checks, were a shrewd idea. The obstacles to activate them and the fact many will never be used partially or fully saves someone money.

Accepting the torch: Words from a 2020 graduate

ear Class of 2020, My name is Jasleen Batra, and I’m a high school senior at DSST: Byers High School. I wish I had the opportunity to thank my teachers and friends in person for all the help they provided me these past four years of my life.

I also wish I had the opportunity to GUEST share these things COLUMN with my school, but Jasleen Batra I think it’d be better shared with you.

First of all, congratulations! You did it! You’ve probably heard this a lot of times, but it’s saddening to see graduation cancelled. I wish we all could celebrate each others’ accomplishments and I’m so proud of all of you. The effort that you put in for the past few years of your life has paid off. You’re walking into the world a little bit smarter and a little bit more ready to change it.

Before we bid farewell to the past few years of your life, take time to preserve memories of the people who helped you along the way, the time your crush asked you out, the time where you felt supported. You crossed and built bridges with your family, your friends, your teachers, your peers, and also with yourself. You are the result of hard work. Take the time to thank the people who helped you, as well as yourself.

My high school experience wasn’t ideal. I didn’t feel welcomed at my school; I jumped around from friend group to friend group for four years and most people would only know me as a peer. It was only when I started joining extracurriculars outside of school — such as the Westminster Youth Advisory Panel and Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities Youth Advisory Board — did I truly find a place I could call home.

Though my high school journey was bumpy, it was made easier and memorable with the teachers that supported me, the people from my extracurriculars who saw the best in me, the mentors who checked in on me and the friends who listened to me and laughed with me.

If you feel uneasy about the future, I offer to you this quote from Creed Bratton of The Office: “No matter how you get there, or where you end up, human beings have this miraculous gift to make that place home.”

You have the power to change the world. For the past two years, I’ve tutored the same group of students each week and each week I would become more amazed that I was tutoring them instead of them tutoring me. When I saw one person fall behind, I’d be amazed to see everyone

Looking for passion Be prepared to find your passion in the weirdest of places. When I was in 11th grade, I had the opportunity to intern with former Governor Hickenlooper’s Press and Communications team. In all honesty, I chose this internship because it seemed like the least boring internship offered to me.

Today, I am grateful that I had this internship, because had I not had this opportunity, I wouldn’t have stumbled upon my passion for politics and my drive to increase civic engagement in Colorado. I wouldn’t have been a part of the extracurriculars that taught me about supporting the voices of the people. I wouldn’t have been a part of the groups that made me feel heard, groups that gave me the best high school memories. Your passions can be unearthed in the most interesting places; embrace your passions and drive on.

Be persistent and be hopeful. This past college admissions season was a rocky road for me. I had gotten rejected from almost every school I applied to including my dream school, except for an acceptance from the University

of Colorado Boulder, and a waitlist at New York University.

It was disheartening to open up a constant stream of rejection letters for three days, which made me feel horrible. The grief from these rejection letters made me feel upset and I felt shut off from the world for the month.

While laying on my couch, reflecting on admissions season, an email sprung up in my email saying a status update was ready to view about my admissions decision at NYU. Seeing how admissions with other universities went, I expected one last university to lay me down with one last rejection. I clicked on the status update only to read “On behalf of the admissions committee…” and knew I was rejected, but something made me read on, and I’m grateful it did, because I had actually been accepted.

I remember running to my mom, crying and screaming “I GOT INTO NYU!” There will be times where you think you should give up, but some beacon of light will tell you to shine on and hope.

Patrick Boland perseveres, helps others despite ‘suicide disease’

Starting Ferocious Fighters Patrick, deemed a gifted student a few years before his initial injury, was 10 years old when he decided he wanted to help other kids with CRPS by sending them all care packages.

But Meg explained that as a teacher at a Douglas County charter school, she couldn’t afford to send every kid with the disease a package.

“He said, ‘Well, how does Make-AWish do it?’ And I said well, they’re a nonprofit. He said ‘Well, let’s do that,” she remembers.

In 2014, Patrick registered Ferocious Fighters as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Six years later, 1,253 kids in 19 countries are linked together through the organization. They range in age from newborns to 21-year-olds and live all over the world. Thirty kids are from Colorado, nearly all living along the Front Range. There are six in Douglas County.

That first year, the organization sent 70 care packages. In 2019, the number jumped to 350. So far, the organization has sent more than 1,000 packages total.

The packages include a blanket, a Ferocious Fighters T-shirt, a keychain, a hand-crocheted hat, a bumper sticker, a journal and rice hand warmers. All have flames on them to symbolize the burning pain that the kids experience.

y all accounts the summer of 2020 will be a dry one, with city water parks and regional attractions like Water World remaining closed for the season.

Fortunately, Lakewood’s Big Soda Lake in Bear Creek Lake Park is offering an active way to enjoy the water.

On May 30 the park, 15600 Morrison Road, reopened to offer on-lake approved paddle craft including paddleboards, canoes, kayaks, windsurfing, belly boats and rafts. The swim beach, marina and other shore areas are to remain closed to swimCOMING and shoreline ATTRACTIONS ming activities until further notice.

“We feel that we have implemented a plan that will allow many park users to get out and enjoy their favorite activities while remaining as safe as a possible,” Clarke Reader wrote Drew Sprafke, Regional Park supervisor, in an email interview. “We are hopeful that users will be happy with this opportunity and will realize that following the rules will help protect everyone while keeping access to this amenity available.”

According to provided information, access to the lake will be clearly signed with activities that will not be allowed, including swimming, picnicking, sunbathing, wading and similar shore activities. Paddle craft users will be allowed to launch and load only, without congregating on the shoreline.

“We evaluated multiple options for reopening to determine what would provide quality recreational access while also addressing public health concerns. We determined that preventing shoreline use and gathering was the single most important safety step we could implement,” Sprafke said. “At the same time, the City has developed signage to remind everyone of safe social distancing practices and a sign package to clearly communicate the rules that will be in place when the lake opens.”

As the park reopens, rangers will patrol first to educate, but then place more of a focus on enforcement as needed. Sprafke said violators will be subject to a citation.

The lake’s swim beach and all associated activities were closed to visitors on May 9 in response to overcrowding and mandates from Colorado and Jefferson County Public Health, and Sprafke said allowing those uses to return will be reevaluated on June 30.

or eight years, Patrick Boland, 16, has lived with a pain throughout his body that is so excruciating, it can feel as if he’s wrapped in barbed wire, doused in gasoline and set on fire.

He has had a headache for the past five years: It’s in his eyes, in his gums, everywhere.

He stopped attending school in person in the eighth grade and has had to relearn to walk four times when the constant, unimaginable pain — caused by a rare neurological condition — became too much.

But the Highlands Ranch teen never stays down for too long.

His passion for baseball gets him out of bed each morning. His treatment regimen propels him through each day. His mom, younger sister and several friends who understand his reality bolster his spirits.

And fierce independence and unwavering self-discipline form a bedrock of inner strength and have led him to want to create a community for others in his shoes.

Six years ago, Patrick, with his mother’s help, started the nonprofit Ferocious Fighters to connect those dealing with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or CRPS. “CRPS is known as the suicide disease,” his mother Meg Boland said.

“Patrick was really in a bad place and didn’t want other people to feel as alone as he did.”

It has taken years of doctors appointments, experimental treatments and grit, but today, Patrick stands strong despite his physical suffering.

“I think I handle the pain really well at this point. But it took a really long time,” he said. “The pain doesn’t affect any functionality anymore — even if it’s as high as it can possibly be.”

The diagnosis Patrick was 8 when he jumped from a step in his front yard and twisted his left ankle. Four months later, he was still in excruciating pain. His ankle was cold to the touch.

It turned purple.

“The doctors did an MRI and called me and said, ‘Everything is normal,’” Meg said. “And I said ‘Well, he hasn’t walked in four months.’ ...We went to the first physical therapy visit and within five minutes of being with Patrick, they said ‘This is CRPS.’” CRPS is a neurological condition that causespatients to experience constant nerve pain even after an injury has healed.

cause or how to treat it effectively, said Dr. Jeffery Kesten, one of Patrick’s physicians. Experts believe patients with CRPS likely have a genetic predisposition to the disease, but there is virtually always an inciting event, such as a minor injury or surgery.

Sometimes, patients will experience swelling, color or temperature changes and nail or hair growth changes.

“He used to describe it as being wrapped in barbed wire, doused in gasoline and set on fire,” said Meg. One pain scale, called the McGill Pain Index, ranks CRPS higher than amputation of a finger without anesthesia and unprepared childbirth.

After his initial diagnosis in 2012, Patrick continued to receive more and more diagnoses for other conditions sometimes related to CRPS, including a lacking immune system, weakened cartilage and ligaments, frequent muscle cramps and other issues.

He has been in and out of a wheelchair as the nerve pain and other symptoms spread to the rest of his body, as it often does for CRPS patients.

About 200,000 people in the U.S. experience the condition every year, according to the National Organization for Rare Disorders.

While specialists can offer a variety of treatments, there is no cure.

The best CRPS patients can hope for is finding subtle relief, functioning through the pain or, if they’re one of the lucky ones, remission. Patrick has never entered remission, he said.

People with a CRPS diagnosis also commonly experience suicidal ideations, Kesten said. That’s why the illness has been dubbed “the suicide disease,” according to the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Sydrome Association, a nonprofit supporting people with CRPS, sometimes known as RSDS. “It must be a horrible place to be,” Kesten said. “I would be concerned if a patient did not have mental health support in a true chronic pain condition because I don’t have a clue how it would not get to you and those around you.”

Creative Coloradans plan virtual art festival June 5-7 Viewers get behind-thescenes views of studios Staff report

Six Colorado artists have felt the impact that the cancellation or postponement of art festivals has had on their art careers, according to a news release, and have planned a virtual art fair.

Using Facebook Events, artists Liz Covert, Lauri Dunn, Victoria Eubanks, Amelia Furman, Katie Hoffman and Rita Valis have found a way to connect with their audiences.

Artists will offer behind-the-scenes views of their studios and artistic process, and some will set up dis-

plays. Viewers can ask questions about their work, purchase artwork and have it delivered to their home, the release said.

“Art fairs are such a special way to connect with your audience. Not only can patrons see a variety of work in one place, but they really offer an opportunity for a relationship to develop between artist and buyer. I’ve created the event to mimic that special aspect of art fairs,” event creator Lauri Dunn said in the release.

They also include a hand-written, personalized letter from Patrick.

“I’m so sorry that you’re having such a great amount of sensitivity on your left leg,” he wrote in one letter. “I know how hard that can be to deal with.”

Each letter ends with his sign-off: “Gentle Hugs, Patrick.”

There also are the quarterly encouragement letters and birthday cards. And every November, Ferocious Fighters organizes a virtual walk to encourage the kids to get moving, an important treatment for their disease.

The group also organizes dozens of support groups for kids and parents throughout the world.

In a note to Meg and Patrick, one mother expressed how much the package meant to her daughter.

“She will not be dancing at the dance or marching with the bands, she cannot keep up with friends and has missed out on several school trips and clubs,” read a note from Nina Nation, the mother of a 13-year-old in Nevada. “But tonight, she got a package with her name on it, for her. She smiled. ... She opened the box and cherished everything inside piece by piece.”

Patrick has tried dozens of treatments throughout the years, including a host of prescription medications and experimental treatments. He’s been in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber; tried medical marijuana; taken ketamine pills; attempted painful “exposure therapy” sessions, which try to desensitize the patients’ nerves by vigorously rubbing them with a coarse blanket; seen chiropractors and massage therapists and more.

After eight years, Patrick has found a cocktail of supplements, medications and treatments that work for him. On top of his daily pills, he receives weekly immune boosters through an IV and, every three months, he undergoes an intense ketamine infusion used to treat chronic pain conditions.

One morning in February, Patrick entered Kesten’s infusion clinic wearing a Mac Miller T-shirt, a beanie and sweatpants. At 6 feet 3 inches, he towered over his mother and the infusion director who is administering his treatment. As she pre-

“It’s at an eight, but that’s only in my back and the rest of the body is a five,” Patrick said. “So really, really good.”

His baseline of pain on a daily basis is about a seven out of 10, he said.

It’s Patrick’s second day of the infusion therapy and, already, he’s reporting improved comfort. The treatment isn’t without side effects, however. He vomited the night before and on the way into the clinic. In the past, he’s experienced hallucinations, inability to eat, anxiety and memory loss from the treatment.

Every baseball day is a good day When asked about what parts of his day-to-day life bring him comfort and joy, Patrick has two answers: medication and baseball.

Patrick, who plays a variety of positions including first base and pitcher, wants to play in college with the long-term goal of being on a professional team.

Even though his education is online through Colorado Connections Academy, Patrick plays baseball for Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch.

“Baseball keeps him alive,” his mom said. “This is his passion, this is what makes him want to get up in the morning.

To his coaches, Patrick is just another athlete, said Ron Quintana, Mountain Vista’s head coach. What makes him stand out isn’t his constant battle with his health, but his deep discipline and fervent work ethic, he said.

“The other day we were working out and he didn’t have a ride to practice, ... so he ran from home,” Quintana said. “When I ask him to do something, he will sprint to it.”

It may not look like it, but as Patrick trots around the baseball field during practice, helping wherever he can, he’s still in pain.

In February, before his most recent ketamine session, Patrick was experiencing the most intense pain he’s ever endured, he said.

But, he said, there’s a bright side.

“I’m at my worst right now. And I’m so happy to say that,” Patrick said before the treatment. “I’m still playing baseball, I’m being a normal teenager, I’m still hanging out with friends, suffering through school work, everything.”
