Jennifer Eaves, of Thornton, speaks to family, friends and members of the North Metro Jaguars football club who gathered Feb. 28 at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop to raise money for the family of Monica Zapata, the 40-year-old single mother killed Feb. 14 in Arvada. Police say a drunken driver ran a stop light at Sheridan Boulevard and 80th Avenue and hit her car. “I hope we make enough money so that (her) kids don’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from or if there’s a roof over their head,” Eaves said. She met Zapata, who has three children, through North Metro Jaguars, for which Zapata’s son plays. More than 250 friends and family came out to show their support at the Thornton restaurant. The only difficult part of filling those positions, according to longtime Hy-
land Hills spokeswoman Joann Cortez, is whittling down the candidates. “We never have a problem hiring,” she said. “We usually have more kids apply than jobs. Last year, we had 2,000 kids apply, so it’s about 2-to-1.” The district receives all manner of applicants, from international students looking for a fun Colorado experience to teachers seeking summer employment to second- and third-generation Water World workers — those kids who
Some residents in Thornton’s Marshall Lake neighborhood oppose the possible construction of an Xcel substation on a 6-acre plot near 136th Avenue and Holly Street, more than a year after the energy company began searching for a location. According to Thornton’s City Development Department, Xcel hasn’t yet submitted a formal application and is looking into several possible parcels for the substation. “Until Xcel files an application, it’s just talk,” said Thornton Communications Manager Todd Barnes. “We really don’t comment on something until we see that application.” Still, discussion of building the substation at the vacant Marshall Lake lot has generated backlash from Thornton residents, who last year picketed the proposed site and came out again at a Feb. 23 Thornton City Council meeting to reiterate their stance. “I wasn’t told it would be a substation,” resident Julia Fritze said at the meeting. “If I would have been, I probably would
