Northglenn considers old Rec Center for homeless

Northglenn could use its old Recreation Center on Community Center Drive to house the homeless this winter, pending a City Council vote.

Northglenn City Council was scheduled to consider a resolution to use the old recreation center as winter housing at the Dec. 6 meeting.

If approved, the program would run through March 2022 and house 25 people who are experiencing homelessness and would be open overnight, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. The program would be operated by Denver Rescue Mission and funded by Adams County. The exact start date depends on the council’s decision and how fast the Denver Rescue Mission can staff the program.

His local public-health department has issued another maskwearing mandate for two metroDenver counties with nearly 1.2 million people. Even so, John

Douglas doesn’t hesitate to admit that masks aren’t perfect in the fight against COVID-19.

“But, like vaccines, they work better when more people use them,” Douglas, executive director of the Tri-County Health Department, told Colorado Community Media.

“Because, like vaccines, they can both prevent the individual from getting infected or sick,” and also can prevent spread of the virus to others, Douglas said.

Westminster stalwart Bob Briggs dies Former legislator, Adams Commissioner, City Councilor was 83

Former state legislator, Adams County Commissioner and Westminster Mayor Pro Tem Bob Briggs died unexpectedly of a heart attack Dec. 2 at his daughter’s home in Erie.

He was 83, just weeks short of his 84th birthday, his daughter Christy Meiers said.

“He had eight siblings in his family,” Meiers said.”He was the first boy, after five sisters. His brother (Al Briggs) died a week ago and he’s been really upset about losing his little brother. And now, they’re both gone.”

He is survived by his wife Shirley, Meiers and his son Robert “Chip” Briggs, and their families.

Meiers said her parents had moved in with her in Erie due to medical issues in 2020.

“He fainted this morning, and I told the EMTs at the time to go

ahead and resuscitate him,” she said. “They got him back for a short time and got him to the hospital. But by the time he got there, he was alert enough that he told the doctor himself that he did not want to be resuscitated if he had another Briggs attack. And he had another heart attack shortly after that.”

She said that he brought an office full of plaques and awards that he had collected throughout the years when he moved in with her.

“He had 250 plaques from all the service organizations and we put as many up as we could,” Meiers said.

“My daughter went and took pictures and a video of all the plaques and I have a bin full of the ones that we didn’t have room for.”

He was born in 1937 in Greeley, but his family moved to Westminster in 1943. A 1955 graduate of Westminster High School, Briggs earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in horticulture from Colorado State University.

ster Window, Briggs said his education in horticulture helped shape his views on politics.

“Well, plants have to have the right kind of environment to grow,” Briggs said. “People have to have the right kind of environment to grow and prosper. And so there’s a relationship between the two. If you don’t create the right kind of environment, the community doesn’t grow.”

Briggs had a long career in local and state politics, serving as Adams County Commissioner for four years beginning in 1979, as the local Board Member for the Regional Transportation District for four years in 1999, and a State Representative for District 29 from Jan. 2003-2005. He served two terms on the Westminster City Council from 2007-2015, including a stint as the Mayor Pro Tem. He also served as a charter President of the old Westminster Chamber of Commerce in 1967.

That group merged with the Adams County Chamber in 1982 and he served as a board member there as well.

He also lent his time to the Colorado Greenhouse Grower’s Association, the Westminster Open Space

Board, the Westminster Rotary, the Jefferson County Historical Commission and was still serving as a member of the Board of Directors for the Butterfly Pavilion. He was a longtime proponent of local rail, helping to found the advocacy group Rocky Mountain Rail.

In the 2016 Westminster Window profile, Briggs said he wanted to contribute to the community that had helped him so much.

“I had many, many people over my lifetime who have made contributions to me, and I don’t think I adequately thanked them, right?”

Briggs said. “But I still owe a debt to them. I’m still trying to pay it forward to thank those who supported me in my endeavors.”

He was also a 60-plus-year member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church on Bradburn Blvd. and helped the church build a columbarium in 2020, a repository for the ashes for church members.

His daughter Meiers said his remains will be cremated and will be interred in that columbarium.

She said the family is currently planning a memorial service after the holidays. Services will be handled by Olinger Mortuary in Wheatridge.

Students, staff and safety reasons schools back Uplands More housing, road and sidewalk improvements lead WPS to back project

Westminster’s controversial Uplands Development could be the very thing the community needs, according to school officials.

“Anytime a community starts a revitalization effort, like what the Uplands is proposing, I think it serves to really lift up the community in many ways, not just the school district, but certainly the economy,” Westminster Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Pamela Swanson said.

In a contentious community debate of whether the proposed Uplands Development will benefit Westminster, Swanson said she sees it as revitalizating the community. According to the Colorado Department of Education, Westminster Public Schools’ enrollment decreased by 11.90 percent between 2015 and 2020. From 2020 to 2021, the number of students declined from 9,090 to 8,373.

Swanson said the development would put more students at desks but could also give teachers an opportunity to live where they teach. She noted that while many of Westminster’s teachers live within the district’s footprint, many com-

mute far distances.

Keith Ouweneel, director of Crown Point Academy, a charter school in Westminster, said staff face similar circumstances.

“We got a lot of people driving a long way who want to work here,” Keith Ouweneel, director of Crown Point Academy, said.

Both Ouweneel and Swanson see the Uplands development as an opportunity to provide more housing for staff. And Swanson said that when teachers work near their school, it produces positives for the community.

“It helps strengthen the community as a whole because it’s our community,” Swanson said. “It’s where we live, where we work, it’s where we play.”

Missing middle Uplands’ pitch to residents and council aims at building the missing middle housing for Westminster. Jeff Handlin, a developer for Uplands, explained how most of the residences within the city are single family homes and multi-family apartments and condominiums.)

What’s missing, Handlin says, is everything in between: duplexes, single-family attached homes, townhomes and cottage homes. The plan also contains about 300 units of income restricted and affordable housing.

Handlin claims these types of housing are ‘built by design’ to be affordable.

Susan Daggett, a professor at the

University of Denver, agrees.

“I do think that this particular project is extremely well designed to contribute to the housing supply that we desperately need, in a way that helps to provide housing for those people who are not wealthy,” Daggett said. “It allows them a possibility to get into a home that’s relatively affordable for our region, and to start building some wealth.”

Daggett conducted a semesterlong class that studied the Uplands proposal and said the surrounding community may see housing prices increase. That might not be bad because one reason why housing prices have remained low is the lack of investment in that area she said.

Working with the schools The developers contacted Westminster Public Schools two years ago to see how they could be good neighbors to the schools, Swanson said.

Currently, the district has 13 career programs and Uplands hopes to use the development to expand them.

One integrated pathway program, called Farmland to Food Truck Entrepreneur, involves students from multiple career pathways in each step of the food system, from growing, harvesting, cooking, planning, organizing and executing.

Sandra Steiner, director of post secondary and workforce readiness for WPS, said Uplands promises to reserve space on the site for stu-

dents gain experience and to help make healthy food available to the local community.

Safer for students Crown Point’s Ouweneel sees three issues within his school – which sits across Federal Boulevard from the development – that Uplands will help improve: enrollment, housing for staff and safety.

Ouweneel said that if teachers and students live near the school, they can walk to school – reducing traffic.

“There’s a bus stop at corner 86 and Federal and there’s no sidewalk to that bus stop. There’s actually two bus stops and occasionally we have kids or families that are using that and it’s just super scary. Crossing federal at any time is scary, but you know, having kids cross four lanes of traffic with no light,” he said.

He thinks that the Uplands Development will bring haste to upgrades.

According to Ouweneel, Crown Point Academy consists of 50 percent of students on free or reduced lunch and about 60 percent represent a minority. Students come from all over — not just Westminster — but for the ten years Ouweneel worked at the school, he notes the lack of investment and attention given to the area.

“I haven’t seen any direct investment in this particular area other than normal maintenance,” he said.

In Adams County, homelessness increased between 40 and 45 percent since the COVID pandemic. As well, no emergency shelter currently exists to connect people experiencing homelessness during cold nights.

The closest one rests 20 miles outside of Northglenn.

For those needing housing, they must be referred by a Northglenn Crisis Response Unit, Adams County Street Outreach Team or the Northglenn Police Department.

Participants must be 18 years or older, have employment or a community connection. Connections can include attending day school, a day center, or staying with friends or family. Families with children will be referred to Adams 12 Five Star schools which can provide resources through a federal act.

The program aims to serve those left out by the Severe Weather Action Plan, a county program adopted in 2020 to help people experiencing unsheltered homelessness. The intake hours for the SWAP are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those experiencing homelessness come to the program in the morning and room distribution occurs around 1 p.m. Since working folks miss these intake hours, the new program will accommodate those folks.

Male and females will be separated and each bed will be spaced six feet apart for COVID safety.

The staff remains confident in making long-term connections for these folks, which can include

transitional housing, longer-term housing, using housing vouchers or identifying appropriate low-income housing, before the program ends.

The program only exists for four months because the building will be unusable after March 2022. The Civic Center Master Plan, which will redevelop the current Civic Center Campus, includes the old recreation center.

Northglenn opened its new rec center in October, leaving the old building vacant.

Local Shops Ready for the Holidays After taking hits from Covid-19, supply chain, local shops ready for business-as-usual

For Chuck and Anita Adam of Northglenn’s 2nd Time Sports, football helmets have always been one consistent item they’ve been able to count on – until 2021 and national supply chain problems.

This year, football helmets almost sank the nine-year-old store.

Every year, the Adams sell football helmets to local high school players before the fall season begins and rhythm is pretty standard: Parents preorder custom helmets for the year, the Adams order them and the kids play football. Everyone is happy.

“We see kids that are really good kids that could get (athletic) scholarships to college if they could afford the training,” Anita said.

Unlike Amazon and other online stores, Chuck can fit a player perfectly for whatever equipment they may need. The Mom and Pop sports equipment store sells new and used sporting equipment for golf, skiing, snowboarding, lacrosse, soccer, hockey, baseball, softball, football, basketball and volleyball.

“Nobody else does what I do,” Chuck said. “When you walk out the door, you’re right.”

But in 2021, all the helmets they ordered for the season came after the season was finished, thanks to supply chain issues. The shipping delay forced the Adams to hand out used, temporary helmets until the new ones arrived – which they did, after the season ended.

The parents all got refunds.

It was devastating for the Adams, coming off of an already tough 2020.

On top of the Coronavirus and the pandemic shutdown that followed, the Adams also endured a breast cancer fight, a quadruple bypass surgery, a bank account hack and a turbulent move.

2nd Time Sports is not the only business to have harsh times after a turbulent year. They, and other local shop owners, are hoping for a busy holiday season to help stay in the black.

Not fancy Profits have not come easy for the Adams and their sporting goods store.

“We’re not fancy, we’re not pretty, we’re not Dicks,” Chuck said.

They typically work seven days per week and did not start paying themselves a decent salary until two years ago. They only recently began paying for health insurance.

“We’re in our early 60s. We have no choice. You know, we put all of our eggs in this basket. We have to make it work,” Anita said.

Still, they are still fighting and do not hesitate to use some elbow grease. With their heat-press, Anita can make uniforms, tee-shirts, polos and decorated apparel for teams or corporate events. And when people stuck at home began looking for safe ways to get outdoors, they began stocking paddleboards to make up for the lack of team sports apparel.

“If I was retired, I’d be doing this,” Anita said. “We don’t go to work hating our jobs.”

Staying afloat Northglenn’s Kid to Kid, which allows parents to trade in old clothes and buy new outfits for their children, should be perfectly insulated from supply-chain issues.

Local parents have come to rely on the shop for good quality clothing.

“Kids are really expensive,” said Miki Hokey, the operating manager at Kid to Kid. “We make sure that parents are getting great things at great prices, their kids are dressed well and for a really good deal.”

Roughly 70 percent of the store’s inventory is used clothing, with only 30 percent new stuff that depends on deliveries. Even so, 2021 has been a challenge as some companies have been six to eight months late with deliveries.

“That’s kind of how we stayed afloat,” Hokey said.

For the holiday season, parents can buy equipment like swings, clothes and toys for their kids.

“Between Tom and I, I think we both started brewing before we were at the legal age to even drink,” Goodwin said.

But home and first-time brewers are not their only customers, he said.

“I would say comfortably on a week to week basis at least 10 to 15 (breweries within the Denver area) and then beyond that, I mean even some of the larger breweries – Avery Odell, New Belgium– they’ve hit us up for just little things,” Goodwin said. “A month ago, we were having 10 to 20 people a day that we were walking through the process... here’s how you pitch yeast, here’s how you add nutrients, here’s how long it takes.”

Saturday, Dec. 11 Brighton Parade of Lights: More than 75 colorful and creatively decorated floats will be featured in the city’s 26th annual holiday parade. The parade steps off at 5 p.m. heading south on North Main St., turns east onto Bridge St. to 10th Ave. and then to Southern Ave. before turning east to return to City Hall.

Sunday, Dec. 12 “Old Time Radio” Christmas Plays: Two Old Time Radio Christmas plays will be performed live by the Advent Radio Players at 1 p.m. at Advent Lutheran Church in Westminster, 7979 Meade St. in Westminster.

The Advent Radio Players have recreated old-time radio shows for the past nine years, using original scripts, several microphones and sound effects from the original programs just as they were heard on the radio. Each play is performed like a live radio show including lighted applause and on the air signs.

This year’s performances are a Fibber McGee and Molly Comedy, “Fibber Paints a Christmas Tree White” will be followed by a Dragnet Drama “The Big Little Jesus”.

Tri-County Health serves Adams and Arapahoe counties, and provides certain public-health services in Douglas County.

Under a Nov. 22 Tri-County order, all people 2 and older in Adams and Arapahoe County must wear a face covering in all public indoor spaces.

Authorities in Jefferson, Denver and Boulder counties have issued similar mandates.

With rates of new coronavirus cases recently reaching levels not seen since December of last year — and daily deaths among those with COVID-19 recently hitting numbers higher than they did during the first wave in spring 2020 — coronavirus hospitalizations in Colorado had for months been creeping up toward last December’s peak.

And while numbers so far this month suggest hospitalizations may finally be coming back down, Colorado’s number of COVID-19 patients still sits high above what it was during most other parts of the pandemic.

Colorado had 1,368 people hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 as of Dec. 3 this year, according to state data. Colorado had the 10th-highest COVID-19 hospital demand in the United States as of early November, according to a Nov. 3 report by the Colorado School of Public Health.

But with the public hearing so many concerns about masks and mask effectiveness — and about vaccines — why wear a mask? Why get vaccinated when so many people

already have been?

Colorado Community Media spoke to Douglas and reviewed other sources of information below to address those questions.

Like ‘sand through a chain-link fence’ At a contentious public comment session in front of Arapahoe County’s elected leaders after Tri-County Health issued its school mask order in August, a man offered an evocative picture of how he thought masks interact with the coronavirus.

“If you took a fist of sand and threw it through a chain-link fence, imagine how much of it would go through,” the man said during the meeting, noting how small the virus is.

A post on a popular social media page last year, focusing specifically on N95 masks, said: “COVID 19 virus particle size is 125 nanometers (0.125 microns); the range is 0.06 microns to .14 microns,” the post said, according to a USA Today fact-check report.

“The N95 mask filters down to 0.3 microns. So, N95 masks block few, if any, virions (virus particles).”

A micron is one one-thousandth of a millimeter — it’s also referred to as a micrometer.

But there’s more to it than that. A COVID-19 virus particle exists on a tiny scale — around 0.1 microns in size — but it is always bonded to something larger, an expert told USA Today for the report. In other words, masks don’t have to stop bare virus particles alone.

“There is never a naked virus floating in the air or released by people,” Linsey Marr, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech who specializes in

airborne transmission of viruses, told USA Today.

The virus attaches to water droplets or aerosols — really small droplets — that are generated by breathing, talking, coughing and so on. These consist of water, mucus protein and other biological material and are all larger than 1 micron, USA Today reported.

Those points were echoed in a research article published in the journal City and Environment Interactions and available online in May 2020, a piece that also suggested the use of masks indoors and improving ventilation to combat COVID-19. See that article at tinyurl.com/MaskArticleCity.

Douglas, the local health chief, has said masks have been shown to be “50-70% effective.” The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website says: “Multi-layer cloth masks can both block up to 5070% of … fine droplets and particles and limit the forward spread of those that are not captured.”

Another speaker at that Arapahoe County commissioners’ meeting in August, from Centennial, said: “If you want to wear a mask, wear it. If you don’t, then don’t. If your guys’ mask works so well, why do I have to wear one? Why does my kid have to wear one?”

The issue arose again at a Nov. 22 Arapahoe commissioners’ meeting, where Commissioner Nancy Sharpe said: “I do think there’s a level of personal responsibility ... They should wear them if they want to wear them and if they need to wear them.”

Masks are primarily intended to reduce the emission of droplets

toward others, an effect known as “source control,” as opposed to “wearer protection,” the CDC’s website says.

But studies also demonstrate that cloth mask materials can also reduce I wearers’ exposure to infectious droplets through filtration, includ- c y ing filtration of fine droplets and particles less than 10 microns.

“The relationship between source d control and wearer protection is likely complementary and possibly t synergistic, so that individual benefitw increases with increasing commu- y n nity mask use,” the website adds.

Inspiration Next spring, May 2022 to be precise, will mark Becky Silver’s 12th year of owning her own art studio.

“I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to draw,” she said.

Becky moved to Westminster in the 1970s and has been involved with the local art community for 40 years. An artist herself, her journey with art started early.

She was inspired as a child by her grandfather Merlin Enabnit, a successful commercial artist who drew pin-up models during World War II. He also made commercial art for Miller, Coca Cola and others and was commissioned to do portraits of the leaders of the United Nations. He also taught at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago.

Her Westminster gallery supports art from high schoolers, teaches classes in watercolor and mixed media, provides a space for other teachers and sells artwork to the community.

She also hosts weddings and performances in the garden behind her building.

The pandemic closed her gallery for about two months. She reopened to teaching classes in her garden, and then slowly re-opened to full steam. However, the business only returned to about 50 percent of prepandemic levels.

It features work from artists all across the Denver area. Mediums include paint, jewelry, wood, glass, weaving, sculpture and photography.

Beer for the community As the sole owner of Westminster’s Kokopelli Beer Company, Christine Wares knows what it’s like to be a woman in an industry dominated by men.

She receives so much support from the community. She notes that both males and females come to her restaurant because they heard it was women-owned. Some admit regrets to her.

“I get a lot of support from other women that wish that they would have done it, that they would have done something to make a difference and open up other doors for other women,” she said.

Coming from a background in telecommunications, she opened her restaurant and brewpub in 2009.

Wares did not pay herself from March 2020 until July 2021. Instead, she forfeited any profit and redirected those funds to her workers.

She shut down the restaurant for the required months during the pandemic, increased seating outside, asked staff to wear masks and followed other directions in an effort to stop COVID. Shutting down a restaurant often means no cash flow to any of the workers. However, Wares made sure her workers received pay.

“We cleaned floors for hours and painted walls and replaced damaged things just to keep money coming in for them,” she said.

Now, her revenue has reached pre-pandemic levels, when it was “flying.” However, the cost of labor has gone up so profit is not the same.

Yet, she soldiers on.

All her food is made from local ingredients and serves 27 of her own beers on tap. Most recently, she created a beer for a member of the Westminster Police Department due to his fight with cancer.

For her success, she thanks the local community.

“If it wasn’t for the community, we wouldn’t exist,” Wares said.

That old dude James Pierce, an owner of JNJ Comic Books and Games in Thornton, grew up with a comic book store close by. As a kid, he visited the store to buy new books and made friends through his passion.

The store not only sold comics but formed a small community. An older man who worked there would talk to the group of kids about the backstories of the comics and the characters to help them better understand the books.

“Now I get to be that old dude,” he said.

He and his wife Jamie opened their store after she was laid off from Hewlett-Packard in 2010.

James works as a software engineer full time and comes into the store at night. Jamie works full-time at the store and considers it her baby.

With about 80,000 comics from James’ personal collection and about 10,000 boxes of Dungeons and Dragons trinkets, 85 percent of the store’s beginning inventory came from years of saving and collecting.

“I’m giving comics that I’m not going to be able to get to read again to people who are,” James said.

Not only do they sell comic books and games, but they also host game nights. Getting to know their clientele is one of the most rewarding parts of their business.

“As a Mom and Pop shop, you have a small client and we get to know each of our customers.”

Rewards come from hard work, and their work ethic is fueled by the enjoyment of running the business.

“We’re never gonna get rich but it’s more about being rich in doing something that a lot of people haven’t done, and I love the hobby.

I love the overall geek culture,” James said.

Both note that the history of comic books and `geek culture’ is primarily male-dominated. Now, about one-third of their clients are women. Jamie notes that having a woman at the front desk helps.

“I think being a woman here, (women) are gonna feel a lot more comfortable coming because, when I went to a lot of comic book stores, they would look at me like, ‘what are you doing here?’” Jamie said.

Non-citizens allowed to vote doesn’t make sense

H

ere’s a new wrinkle on voting rights: While Republican controlled state legislatures are reducing the ease in which citizens CROSS can exercise their voting rights, the CURRENTS New York City city council is headed in the opposite direction.

The majority of the city council is on the verge of voting to allow legal residents who Bill Christopher are not citizens to vote in municipal elections. Does that sound odd to you? It does to me.

Immigrants who hold a green card or have the right to work in the United States would be eligible to vote, but only in a city election. The city council does not have the authority to dictate who is eligible in state or national elections.

The idea of legal residents voting in New York City is not new. For decades, they have been allowed to vote in school board elections until such boards were abolished in the early 2000’s The pro and con on granting this right There are 800,000 immigrants who will enjoy the opportunity to vote for mayor, council members and tax issues once this policy is in place. The Democrat council members have pushed this to gain voting support while Mayor Bill de Blasio is against it even though he is a Democrat.

The policy issue begs the long standing question as to who should be allowed to participate in the country’s democratic process.

Those in support of this change maintain that legal residents who are NOT citizens pay taxes, send their children to public schools and rely on city services and deserve a say in the above mentioned ballot matters.

On the other hand, opponents say the council’s action would weaken the voting rights of citizens and discourage immigrants from trying to become citizens.

I side with the latter argument.

Shouldn’t a person who migrated to America, be required to achieve citizenship before enjoying the right to vote? Granting voting rights even if it is only at the municipal level, is a step closer to granting citizenship without achieving the existing requirements. Haven’t we made it easy enough for immigrants to enjoy living in America and having the benefit of a free education, health care and other governmental benefits?

While I am not opposed to immigrants coming to America to work and live, I think we need to draw the line at bestowing voting rights without citizenship. It will be interesting to see how this New York City action may have a ripple effect in other states and cities.

From what I have read, other municipalities in California, Maine, Illinois and Massachusetts are considering such legislation.

As you will recall, Colorado voters approved legislation last year spelling out that only U.S. citizens can vote.

Holiday season is upon us Christmas, Hanukkah and other holiday celebrations have kicked off the season in the Westminster community. The annual City Hall Christmas Lighting ceremony took place on Dec. 4. So, the lights will be on nightly for everyone’s enjoyment. Each of us has our favorite books and authors. Some of us enjoy our

books that we can physically touch and hold, myself included. Others prefer their e-reader. And there are many who enjoy consuming their stories through audio books. Whatever our preferences are, whoever our favorite authors are, and however we choose to take a mental, emotional and spiritual journey by engaging with our favorite books, the important thing is that we make time to broaden our horizons by reading as much as we possibly can and from as many sources as we possibly can.

Just down the street, Hyland Hills Park and Recreation District folks have done a superb job of putting up holiday lights at Adventure Golf. In a long standing tradition, the tallest Christmas tree (approximately 65 feet next to Fire Station No. 1) in Colorado is lit again this year thanks to the Westminster Historical Society and Westminster Parks staff. The tree decorating started more than one hundred years ago with a hiatis from 1941-1987 when WHS started it again with “Hometown Christmas.” These events and traditions are all a part of “community” which feels so good.

seated Westminster city council had an opportunity to get their collective teeth into the package of water matters which played a key role for those who were elected on Nov. 2.

Interim City Manager Jodie Andrews teed up a package of recommendations which were right on target in my book.

However, our new policymakers produced a mixed bag of directions. Only three (McNally, DeMott and Smith) saw the merit in hiring an outside engineering firm to determine if the new water treatment plant is needed and is the best option. So that key item failed.

Secondly, the recommendation to “pause” the condemnation of the 40 acre water plant site was carried over to allow the attorneys to meet with council in executive session. The big news was council directed staff to prepare formal action to drop the third tier ($12.88 per 1,000 gallons) in the water rate

Council actions do not reconcile So, the 800 pound gorilla remains intact at least for now. I am referring to council marching ahead with the new estimated $250 million or more water treatment plant, not knowing if there is another viable option which would be less costly.

This outcome at the Nov. 29 study session was very disappointing. Staff had recommended and prepared for this action.

Remember, the longer the council goes with the $29 million design

contract on the new plant to be located on the Kearny property, the less maneuvering room is left to change options as the weeks fly by.

Remember, too, that the new site and plant will dictate what future water rates will be needed to finance a portion of the costs.

The option on the table was simply to “call a time out” on the plant design and new major water lines so that an evaluation could be performed by a council selected civil engineering firm to provide more definitive information.

So, as it stands, keep marching on the new treatment plan, but with less revenue to pay for this whooper of a capital cost as the outcome. Folks, these two decisions together do not reconcile.

Don’t take me wrong; I wanted mitigation on the $12.88 per 1,000 gallons rate as well, but there are other ways to achieve resolution AND “pause” on the treatment plant option.

structure. Also, there was discussion of lowering the second tier from $8.22 to $6.00 per 1,000 gallons.

I am sure staff will bring back an analysis of how much utility revenue would be lost in each of these rate reductions. Clearly, there was strong political momentum to shed the despicable $12.88 rate even if they didn’t know what the fiscal impact would be. Campaign promises were clearly kept. They also concurred with some “no brainer” utility billing matters which former City Manager Don Tripp had promised months ago when trying to entice the council at the time to increase the current water rates for 2022.

Evergreen is home to a well-known Santa artist

F

or Tom Newsom, one of about six Santa painters across the United States, inspiration comes from the foothills of the Rockies.

“Living in the mountains in Colorado is pretty inspiring,” Newsom said.

For those who have ever completed a Santa puzzle, or seen ASPCA Christmas cards, Newsom’s art might seem familiar.

Chances are, it’s his name on those illustrations.

As well, he completed the artwork for the books Indian in the Cupboard, the Wizard of Oz, The Night Before Christmas, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and more. Some were for the original copies and some were reprints.

A Texas native, he moved to Colorado in 1981 and resides in Evergreen with his wife, Carol.

Since he was a boy, Newsom has always been drawn to creating artwork. In college, he started off as an engineering major with hopes to work in the space program, which heightened his interest during the 1960s. However, he quickly switched to his passion. In 1971, he graduated from the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California as an illustration major.

He gravitated away from astronomy to pursue painting, but the two spheres came together.

Newsom was hired to watch a space shuttle launch at Cape Kennedy and create several pieces of art for the Manned Space Flight Art Collection.

His career started off while he was in college, creating illustrations for cash. During the summers in between semesters, he drew portraits at an amusement park to afford tuition. Then, he graduated from art school and his salary ever since comes from his artwork.

“There aren’t very many people who actually make a living at art.

I mean, a lot of people go to art

school and they wind up doing something else. But I’ve managed to make a career for a long, long time doing artwork,” he said.

Although painting remains as his passion, he does not encourage others to join in.

“I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody,” he said. “It’s a pretty tricky profession. I’ve worked exclusively on commissions, piece by piece. My total income is just dependent on artwork. And so it’s, you know, it’s a chancy thing to work on your own life.”

That discouragement did not come off to his family, as artistry must run in Newsom blood. His wife, Carol, also creates illustrations. His two sons, Andy and Phillip, graduated from the ArtCenter College of Design. Andy, 46, is a graphic designer and Phillip, 42, paints landscapes and animals.

Now, Newsom focuses on painting Santa through the Gouache medium. Gouache is water-based, opaque watercolor style of painting and allows for very fine de-

tails. Bright colors come out very bright and dark colors come out very dark, and he uses very small brushes to extract the utmost detail. Over the years, Newsom has created over 150 total Santa paintings.

His process of painting starts out with a commission. A buyer will give him verbal directions, “Santa with puppies,” for example, and then he creates sketches.

The sketches are sent back and after receiving confirmation, he

will begin his paintings.

All paintings start out with research. Some pieces consist of merely a photograph of a model, but others need more digging.

He explained how a commission hired him to paint St. Nick on a motorcycle, and he needed to visit a motorcycle museum. There, he took many photographs of a model next to a 1940s Harley because he knew the motorcycle community needed to see the exact details of their beloved steeds.

For Newsom, hiring models in Evergreen, Colorado is no big deal.

“They’re pretty easy to find up here in the mountains, old guys with white beards,” he said.

After taking photos of the models, he then starts the process of painting. A typical painting usually takes between a week and ten days, if he works about six hours a day. Once the piece is finished, he sends a digital copy over to the buyer.

For current projects, Newsom remains busy working with two self-publishing children’s books authors to create illustrations, a portrait of a political commentator and a cover of Texas Magazine.

Miners Alley says farewell to ‘A Christmas Carol’

f you speak to most actors, they’ll tell you that every production creates a family feeling between the cast and crew. And while that feelCOMING ing is important, ATTRACTIONS it’s fleeting, since people tend to go their own way after the production is done. But for the cast of “A Christmas Carol” at the Miners Alley Playhouse, that’s not the case.

For the last five Clarke Reader productions, Jim Hunt, Lisa DeCaro, Meredith Young, Koi Matheo, Jason Maxwell and Josh Hartwell have all taken on the characters from Charles Dickens’ immortal story with a Miners Alley-specific framing service. But this will be the last the theater stages the show for some time.

“It’s become a family reunion every year for all of us,” Hunt, who plays Scrooge, said warmly.

“It’s very emotional for us this year and we’re all just playing the life out of it.”

“A Christmas Carol” runs at Miners Alley, 1224 Washington Ave. in Golden, through Thursday, Dec. 23. Performances are at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday, with additional performances at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 21 through 23. The theater requires masks for all at every performance and attendees (except children younger than

12-years-old) must show proof of vaccination.

Directed by Len Matheo and given a local touch by Hartwell’s adaptation, the hilarious and quick-witted production features the six actors playing all the characters fans know. Hunt said the show provides him a great opportunity to do a full investigation of the Scrooge character - something that other productions don’t always offer.

“I love Miners Alley so much and it has been the best treat and honor to do this work there,” he said. “If you’re not doing something you like at Christmas, it can be hard for your soul. But ours is really an intimate and cozy production.”

Over the years the show has become a Christmas tradition for audiences all over Golden and beyond, so much so that Matheo said the virtual option the theater hosted last year during the depths of the COVID-19 lockdown was the biggest seller of all its holiday options. But changes along the way, including his child, Koi, getting older, have affirmed that it’s time to put the show to bed.

“We’ve done just enough tweaks over the years that it feels different each time,” Matheo said. “And this year it really feels different - it’s like there’s something new going on. There’s a vibrancy on the stage.”

That vibrancy means audiences are in for a special treat as the company says goodbye to the show - though not to holiday produc-

tions. They’re already planning for “A Christmas Story” next year.

“There are great elements of theater magic that highlight the ghost story and redemption story that is `A Christmas Carol,’” Matheo said. “It makes you want to leave the theater and help your fellow man. It makes audiences rethink how they think about the holidays.”

While Douglas acknowledged it’s difficult to say unequivocally that the masks made the difference, he’s confident that the data back up that

conclusion.

“What is notable in the data from CDPHE and even more so from the national study performed by CDC is that while rates were reasonably similar between districts that did and did not implement mandates going into the school year, they increased substantially more in the areas without mandates than in those that had them, which is highly consistent with a benefit of the mandate,” Douglas said.

Speaking to Colorado Community Media, Douglas said younger kids “probably do lose a lot of emotional cues” such as smiles, frowns or teachers’ lips moving.

“I don’t disagree at all that from a learning perspective, there may be an impact, but the counter to that is that masks have ended up being (what) allows kids to stay (safe) in the classroom anyway,” Douglas said.

Helping us understand what we went through Local author was frontline cashier during pandemic

In 2019, Denver blogger Adam Kaat left his corporate job to focus on his writing.

At the time, he had the first draft of a novel completed. Kaat sought a job that was active, but not mentally draining so he could continue work on his debut novel.

Kaat, 36, secured a job in January 2020 as a cashier at a busy, high-end grocery store in Cherry Creek. He enjoyed being a point person for customer service, and especially, the social aspect of the job.

But shortly after settling in, the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

By March 15, there were mask orders in place, workers had to sanitize their registers between every customer and shoppers began to hoard groceries and toiletries, Kaat said. He added there was a lot of general panic at that time.

“Everyone’s working overtime (and) being called a hero,” Kaat said. “We had no other choice than to go with the flow.”

Kaat then decided to set the novel he had been working on aside, and began to blog about being a frontline worker during an unprecedented time. The blog gained a following, and prompted to Kaat to write what would become his first

published novel: “Life on the Grocery Line: A Frontline Experience in a Global Pandemic.”

The book was published in April.

It is a work of fiction, but mirrors a lot of Kaat’s experiences as a grocery store employee.

“Life on the Grocery Line” tells the story through the eyes of the character, David, a cashier at the fictional Dream Grocers store during the pandemic.

“The book shows the human side of everyday interactions that people might not think about,” Kaat said. “Hopefully, it makes you laugh, (and) think about the future and to be good to each other.”

Did anything in particular inspire you to become a writer?

I think I have always been a writer. I just needed to find the focus to sit down and write. It’s the best way for me to work through the things — both happy and sad — that happen in my life.

I did not discover my love of writing until my last year in college when I began reading more for fun and finding a wider variety of writers. I started dabbling with blogs then and I fell in love.

I enjoy meeting people and hearing their stories. My book has brought me closer to people I wouldn’t have otherwise met. It’s a fun journey.

What did you enjoy most about writing Life on the Grocery Line?

It was therapeutic to sit down

and sort through the craziness of the early pandemic. There was a heavy burden put on grocery workers and other essential employees. With all of the uncertainty of the times, I was grateful to have a project to work on.

What can your fans expect from you next?

I am working on the sequel to “Life on the Grocery Line,” where we meet back up with Daniel a year later as he is going through his year review at work. I hope to have it out in spring of 2022.

In what ways do you think people will be able to relate to “Life on the Grocery Line”?

Daniel is a normal guy thrust into unforeseen circumstances and he has to grapple with many of the problems we all went through during the first few months of the pandemic.

Hopefully, it helps us all understand what we went through.

As the pandemic wears on and we move back toward “normalcy,” I think it can help remind us how fragile everything is. I think doing that can help ground us and give a better perspective on the future.

Learning curve continues for Northglenn

BRIGHTON -- Northglenn High School’s girls basketball coach, Gabriela Jimenez, knew that her opening round game at the first Nate Howard Memorial Basketball tournament was going to be tough, and she was right.

Pomona beat the Norse 4913 Dec. 2 at Prairie View High School. Saleen James scored five of the Norse’s points. Dakota Chavez added four, including a 3-pointer. Miracle Alarid pulled down five rebounds.

Mia Lobato led the Panthers with 10 points. Celeste Florez added nine, and Kendra Ritzman tossed in seven.

“It was very tough. But we knew

it was going to be tough going in,” said the second-year coach of the Norse. “A lot of our kids have not seen varsity level basketball or intense basketball. It’s a big learning curve, and it’s a lot of way fundamental stuff we have to do.”

On the other hand, Jimenez was glad the Norse had a chance to see that type of basketball up close.

“It’s good for them to see it and kind of sink or swim in the first game. Hopefully, they learn quickly,” Jimenez said. “It seemed like they got better in the second half, so I can’t complain. It’s a learning curve, but we’re trying to make steps, every minute, every quarter, every game.”

Of the 10 players on Northglenn’s roster, six are underclassmen.

“I start two freshmen,” Jimenez said. “Overall in the program, we have a lot of young kids. It’s our first year without COVID, so it’s the first coaching staff that gets a full load of freshmen. They want to learn, and half the battle is getting kids who want to be there.

As long as they are motivated to learn, that’s what the coaches are here to do.”

Northglenn visits John F. Kennedy High School at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9.

“If we can keep and improving on those basic blocks, we’re going to be OK,” Jimenez said. “We’re going to struggle against those way better teams. We have a lot of kids who’ve never played. Where we’re at right now, we’re going to be OK.”

A couple of things turned sour for Horizon High School’s girls basketball team in the second round of its Best of the Nest tournament Dec. 2.

Ralston Valley outscored the Hawks 24-9 in the second quarter and won the game 66-46. HHS coach Dan Doehler pointed to something else.

“I don’t think Ralston Valley is any more talented than us or has better players than us,” Doehler said. “We didn’t have a lot of effort or energy on the defensive end. We gave up 27 offensive rebounds, lost the rebounding by 30. When you see these numbers and we only lose by 20, imagine if we had 10 extra rebounds. It’d be a different game.”

Morgan Ives led the Hawks with 17 points, which included four from 3-point land. Zoe Scarborough and Alyssa Temple were next with nine. All of Temple’s points came from beyond the 3-point arc.

Natalie Thornton and Kaitlin Schumann pulled down seven rebounds.

Finley Timon led the Mustangs with 24 points, including three from 3-point range. Saya Sabus had a pair of 3-pointers en route to 14 points. Ciana Wilder had 11 rebounds.

“When we composed ourselves and got to some of our sets, we executed pretty well,” Doehler said. “Our press looked good. It gave them fits, slowed them down a little bit. Things I didn’t like? We turned the ball over as many times as we did.”

Horizon took fourthin its own tournament after losing Pine Creek Dec. 4. The Hawks are 1-2 beginning this week’s schedule.

“We have a really hard December, and I do that on purpose,” Doehler said. “We play ThunderRidge Friday (Dec. 10 at Horizon), and then we go to Arizona.

We’ll be battle-tested and ready to go.”

Front Range League play begins after the first of the year, and Doehler expects the Hawks to be in the thick of the race for the league title.

BRIGHTON -- Thornton’s first two games in the inaugural Nate Howard Memorial Basketball Tournament did not go well for the Trojans.

Greeley Central beat THS by 49 points Dec. 2, and Poudre outscored THS by 60 in a consolation round game Dec. 3.

“The ladies played hard. We’re definitely inexperienced,” said THS coach Tate Drane. “There’s only one way to get better, and that’s to keep fighting. They are very aggressive. We just need more time.”

No stats were available for the Dec. 2 game against the Wild-

cats. Junior guard Madison Ault scored three points in the Dec. 3 game against the Impalas.

Cynthia Hagerty added the other two points.

Of the 10 players on Thornton’s roster, only one -- Jasmine Jackson -- is a senior. Five of the other players are underclassmen.

“She (Jackson) has been a great leader,” Drane said. “Long-term looks great, as long as the girls keep buying in and keep trying and come together, we’re going to be pretty good.”

THS finishes up play this weekend at the annual Centaurus High School tournament. The Trojans’ next game is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 9. Time and opponent were not available at

press time. After taking time away for the holidays, Thornton returns to action against Boulder Tuesday, Jan. 4.

“We’re very fast, quick,” Drane said. “We’re very aggressive on defense. Weaknesses? We don’t have a 6-foot-5 person, you know? We’re trying to play to our strengths, which is being fast.”

Drane said on occasion the Trojans tend to play a little too fast.

“It plays into the inexperience,” he said. “But the more times you get on the court, people will calm down a little.

We won’t play hot potato as much. The girls are getting more confident every time they are out there. More experience and effort, they’ll be fine.”

The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development will bid the lesser amount of the loan balance or the appraised value obtained by the Secretary prior to sale.

There will be no proration of taxes, rents or other income or liabilities, except that the purchaser will pay, at or before closing, his prorated share of any real estate taxes that have been paid by the Secretary to the date of the foreclosure sale.

When making their bids, all bidders except the Secretary must submit a deposit totaling 10% of the Secretary’s bid in the form of a certified check or cashier’s check made out to the Secretary of HUD. A deposit need not be accompany each oral bid. If the successful bid is oral, a deposit of 10% of the Secretary’s bid must be presented before the bidding is closed. The deposit is nonrefundable.

The remainder of the purchase price must be delivered within 30 days of the sale or at such other time as the Secretary may determine for good cause shown, time being of the essence. This amount, like the bid deposits, must be delivered in the form of a certified or cashier’s check. If the Secretary is the highest bidder, he need not pay the bid amount in cash. The successful bidder will pay all conveying fees, all real estate and other taxes that are due on or after the delivery date of the remainder of the payment and all other costs associated with the transfer of title. At the conclusion of the sale, the deposits of the unsuccessful bidders will be returned to them.

The Secretary may grant an extension of time within which to deliver the remainder of the payment. All extension will be for 15-day increments for a fee of $500.00, paid in advance. The extension fee shall be in the form of certified or cashier’s check made payable to the Secretary of HUD. If the high bidder closes the sale prior to the expiration of any extension period, the unused portion of the extension fee shall be applied toward the amount due.

If the high bidder is unable to close the sale within the required period, or within any extensions of time granted by the Secretary, the high bidder may be required to forfeit the cash deposit, or at the election of the foreclosure commissioner after consultation with the HUD representative, will be liable to HUD for any costs incurred as a result of such failure. The Commissioner may, at the direction of the HUD representative, offer the property to the second highest bidder for an amount equal to the highest price offered by that bidder.

There is no right of redemption, or right of possession based upon a right of redemption, in the mortgagor or others subsequent to a foreclosure completed pursuant to the Act. Therefore, the Foreclosure Commissioner will issue a Deed to the purchaser(s) upon receipt of the entire purchase price in accordance with the terms of the sale as provided herein, HUD does not guarantee that the property will be vacant.

The scheduled foreclosure sale shall be cancelled or adjourned if it is established, by documented written application of the mortgagor to the Foreclosure Commissioner no less than three (3) days before the date of sale, or otherwise, that the default or defaults upon which the foreclosure is based did not exist at the time of service of this notice of default and foreclosure sale, or all amounts due under the mortgage agreement are tendered to the Foreclosure Commissioner, in the form of a certified cashier’s check payable to the Secretary of HUD, before the public auction of the property is completed.

The amount that must be paid if the mortgage is to be reinstated prior to the scheduled sale is $241,681.76 as of November 2, 2021, plus all other amounts that would be due under the mortgage agreement if payments under the deed of trust had not been accelerated, advertising costs and postage expenses incurred in giving notice, mileage by the most reasonable road distance for posting notices and for the Foreclosure Commissioner’s attendance at the sale, reasonable and customary costs incurred for title and lien record searches, the necessary out of pocket costs incurred by the Foreclosure Commissioner, and all other costs incurred in connection with the foreclosure prior to reinstatement.

Wrestling Riverdale Ridge beat Ralston Valley 50-30 in the Battle of the Best dualmeet tournament at Pine Creek High School Dec. 4.

On-mat winners for the Ravens were AJ Hague (113), Brayden Damron (120), Keagan Domenico (132), Lane Kougl (138), Dominic Cerda (145) and Wes Harden (160), Northglenn High School Boys basketball Highlands Ranch beat Northglenn 55-26 in the opening round of a tournament at Highlands Ranch Dec. 1. No stats were available for either team.

Wrestling Eaglecrest downed the Norse 72-12 in Northglenn’s other match in Greeley. Antonio Ruiz (132 pounds) won his contested match. NHS’ other six points came by way of a forfeit.

Girls swimming Brighton beat Northglenn 133-34 in the season-opening meet for both schools Dec. 2.

Lander Wilkinson was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, posting a time of 30.9 seconds. Ginevra Barbato was eighth in the same race with her time of 35.12.

Rylee Nyberg was third in the 100freestyle, where her time was 1:03.1.

Wilkinson was seventh in a time of 1:10.28. Teresa Nagle, who took third in the 100- butterfly, was fifth in the 100- backstroke, fashioning a time of 1:19.16. Alexyss Lucero was seventh in the race. Her finishing time was

Legacy High School Girls swimming THORNTON -- Legacy downed Broomfield 221-87 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center Nov. 30.

Sydney Bales won the 50-yard freestyle and helped the 200- medley relay team to a first-place finish. She, Isabella Forsman, Julia Raskay and Valerie Xin (who also won the 100freestyle) finished in a time of 1:51.56.

Forsman also was part of the 200freestyle relay team (Claire Jansen, Abbie Kehmeier and Sabrina Rachjaibun were the other team members) that captured first place in a time of 1:43.12. Rachjaibun also won the 200freestyle.

Abigail Zardozny (who won the 100- backstroke), Raskay (who took first in the 500- freestyle), Kehmeier and Bales won the 400- freestyle relay, posting a time of 3:48.10.

LHS also won its two-day invitational meet in Thornton over the weekend. The Lightning beat Cherokee Trail by 22 points.

Forsman won the 200- freestyle in a time of 1:57.11. The Lightning also won two relays. The 200- freestyle team of Bales, Kehmeier, Forsman and Zadorozny finished in a time of 1:39.63. The 200- medley relay team (Kehmeier, Rachhjaibun, Bales and Zadorozny) finished in a time of 1:48.68.

Girls wrestling Douglas County beat Legacy 40-12 Dec. 3. Melanie Perez won her 127-pound match by pinfall over Douglas County’s Abbie McGinnis. Ella Stevens won her 185-pound match by forfeit.

Brianna Rodriguez finished fourth

at 161 pounds at the Arapahoe Girls Invitational Dec. 4.

Boys basketball Legacy got past Erie 49-46 in the season opener for both teams Nov. 29.

Devin Sehr and Bryce Spradling had 11 points for the Lightning. Ethan Wise added 10. Spradling also had a team-high seven rebounds.

Legacy downed Far Northeast Warriors 56-43 in the opening round of a tournament at Highlands Ranch High School Dec. 1. Jaycee Stelling had 19 points for the Lightning. Spradling added 16.

Lakewood downed Legacy 44-37 in the opening game of the Westminster Tournament Dec. 2. Dj Parrish, a freshman, led the Tigers with 13 p[oints. Logan Watson added 12. Olivia Mortensen led the lightning with 12 points. Westbrook Jensen added six.

Denver South downed Legacy 69-53 in Westminster Dec. 3. No stats were

available for the Lightning. Taysha Williams threw in 32 points for Denver South. Briasia Johnson added 20.

Wrestling Prairie View stopped Legacy 58-18 in Broomfield. The match was part of a three-way meet that also involved Thornton High School.

The Lightning picked up contested wins from Ryan Bynarowicz (170 pounds), Gavin Funk (195), Dustin Cottew (132) and Quinn Funk (160).

Mountain Range High School Girls basketball Prairie View downed Mountain Range 34-24 in Westminster Nov. 30 in the first game of the season for both teams.

Paige Walker and Kaylee DeShazer scored nine points and had eight rebounds for the T-Hawks. Walker had seven rebounds.

Emma Jiminez scored eight points for the Mustangs. Hailey Alvarez led MRHS with eight rebounds.

Severance beat the Mustangs 69-47 in the opening round of the Westminster Tournament Dec. 2. Ella Jimenez scored 17 for Mountain Range. Joie Rodriguez added 16.

Lakewood beat Mountain Range 73-37 in the Dec. 4 game of the Westminster Tournament. Mya Correa led the Mustangs with 12 points. Aaliyah Chavez added 11. Lakewood’s Anna Salmore scored 19 points. Logan Watson added 16.
