Latest congressional map keeps House members apart

The latest draft of Colorado’s congressional map avoids putting the state’s current U.S. House members into the same district, while creating a sweeping district across most of the Western Slope and southern Colorado.

The most heavily populated parts of north Douglas County would stay where they are in the 4th Congressional District. And the biggest cities in Arapahoe County — including Aurora, Centennial, Littleton, Englewood, Greenwood Village and Sheridan — would be in the 6th District, along with the Columbine and Ken Caryl areas of Jefferson County.

The new 8th Congressional District in the north Denver metro region would be nearly 39% Hispanic. It would encompass Northglenn, Thornton, Brighton, Commerce City and Fort Lupton.

And the proposed 7th District, now centered in the north and west metro area, would include much of Jefferson County and stretch to South Park in the central Rocky Mountains.

Building a future in Westminster Boot camp aims to build construction confidence

Kari Spicer snapped a photograph as the timber frames of a house went up at her job site overlooking Rocky Mountain National Park. The building plans, the ones she was holding in her hands, had come to life before her eyes.

Spicer is a graduate of the Colorado Homebuilding Academy’s construction boot camp. In just four weeks at the camp, she learned to read a blueprint, operate power tools, frame up a wall and more.

She credits the organization with exposing her to the world of construction and guiding her through a career change.

“I’ve always known that I really am into building things,” the 29-year-old resident of Denver said.

Spicer previously worked as a snowmaker and an EMT. The academy helped her craft a resume and cover letter that highlighted her new skills as well as previous experience. And about a week after graduation, she landed a job in the industry, she said. She currently works as an administrative coordinator for ReThink Enterprise, a custom home building company.

Now the construction skills boot camp is coming to Westminster, starting Sept. 27.

Colorado Homebuilding Academy, in partnership with Uplands Community Collective, is bringing its training and career counseling to the corner of North Lowell Boulevard and West 88th Avenue. For a month, classes will run three hours a day, four days a week under a tent in the parking lot of the defunct watering hole Davies Locker.

“We know that there’s a significant number of construction workers that live in the surrounding communities,” said Eric Kornacki, executive director of Uplands Community Collective. “But maybe they don’t have all of the training and

certification they need.”

In addition to basic construction skills, graduates of the program receive an OSHA-10 certificate.

The safety certificate from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is required by a lot of employers in the construction industry, said Andy Coy, a recruiter for the academy.

The organization works to address the lack of laborers in the state’s homebuilding field that began long before the pandemic and continues to this day. As of July 2021, the state employed 10,000 fewer construction workers than it did two years ago, according to The Colorado Sun’s recent analysis of state employment data.

“The bottom line is there’s a shortage of skilled workers,” said Don Hanson, president and owner of Full House Construction & Design Inc. The South Denver general contracting company specializes in remodeling and is a featured employer at the academy’s Sept. 23 career fair.

Hanson is looking for skilled workers and would hire five or six more people, increasing his workforce by a third, if he could find the right ones.

He’s not alone. Spicer said ReThink Enterprise will also be at the fair. If it had enough labor, the com-

pany could do ten times the number of projects it currently does, she said.

“Having a school like this, that would promote the structured learning and introduce skilled people into the workplace, even on an entry-level … just correlates to productivity,” Hanson said.

Tuition for the boot camp is waived for students intent on finding a job in the industry. Graduates also receive $200 worth of starter tools, Coy said. Additionally, workers can take courses in carpentry, concrete and electrical construction at its main facility in Denver.

While entry-level positions in construction pay $15 to $18 an hour, with experience or extra training, workers can make more, said Damon DiFabio, director of Colorado Homebuilding Academy. Hanson said he sees $25 to $40 an hour in the high-end remodeling sector.

“Construction is one of the great industries, still,” DiFabio said. “I think you can — with a limited amount of formal education — you can move up through the ranks pretty successfully.”

Job training on the menu at Mountain View Cafe Work Options offers food service skills in Human Services building

There are two benefits to the Sept.

15 grand opening of the Work Options Mountain View Cafe in Westminster, according to Adams County officials.

First, it will provide job training for Adams County residents, both for those hoping to work in the food service field and for those just hoping to find work.

“Our mission is to help people get and keep jobs in the foodservice industry, particularly those with barriers to keep or getting jobs before,” Work Options for Women Executive Director Julie Stone said during grand opening. “That can be barriers as small as needing eyeglasses or complicated as having housing issues.”

It’s a bonus for Adams County employees who work in Westminster’s Adams County Human Services building, too, according to Eddie Valdez, deputy director of Adams County Human Services. The building has housed privately operated cafeterias in the space before, but they did not stick around.

County officials joined staff from Denver-based Work Options and corporate sponsor Swire Coca Cola for the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the cafeteria, located on the third floor of the Human Services Center, 11860 Pecos St., Westminster.

The cafe will offer weekday breakfast and lunch options, including pastries, sandwiches and burgers.

The cafe has been in operation in Westminster since mid-August, Work Options for Women Executive Director Julie Stone said. But it’s the latest

in a series of job training opportunities the group has offered for the last 25 years.

Stone said the group operates mostly in Denver, offering a four-week culinary skills program, a six-week culinary basics program — covering safety and sanitation, grill and shortorder cooking, salad bar, sauteing and an introduction to baking.

Finally, it offers a two-year sous chef apprentice training program.

“Our training is fast, free and focused on our students,” she said.

For many of the programs students, the training leads to their first real job. Most have been homeless at one time or another and three-quarters have had some involvement with law enforcement, she said.

No charges in Thornton officer-involved shooting STAFF REPORT

BRIGHTON – The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will not file charges against Thornton police officers who were involved in an April shooting.

Officers shot Raymond Quintana after a reported trespass, a chase and a resulting car crash. DA Brian Mason said in a statement. The suspect also was identified as being part of a burglary.

“Based on the evidence presented and the applicable Colorado law, there is no reasonable likelihood of success of proving the elements of any crime beyond a reasonable doubt as it relates to the law enforcement officers involved in this incident,” according to a letter Mason sent to Thornton Police Chief Terrence Gordon.

The incident began around 8:30 a.m. after police received a report of a trespass in the 9700 block of Welby Road. A security guard who works at the complex told police there had been a series of coin thefts from the laundry room. Eventually, authorities were able to identify a suspect connected with the thefts. At the time, he was carrying a backpack and wore a black, hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled up over his head.

“J.J. (the security guard) confronted the man about breaking into the laundry machines,” the DA’s letter read. “The suspect pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at J.J.’s face.

J.J. told the officers he was in fear for his life and thought the suspect was going to kill him.”

The security guard swatted the gun away and ordered the suspect to leave. Instead, the suspect pointed the gun at the guard and ran from the laundry room.

The DA”s letter said as officers were talking with witnesses, Officer Zac Crowe saw a man Thornton who appeared to match Police Chief the description of the Terrence suspect.

Gordon “Officer Crowe approached the suspect and instructed him to keep his hands out of his pockets,” the letter said. “The suspect refused to comply and ran away. Officer Crowe chased him into a parking lot. The suspect turned around and pointed a gun at Officer Crowe. The suspect yelled, ‘Better back off, f-----!’

Officer Crowe saw the gun pointed at him and took cover between vehicles parked in the lot to avoid being shot.

“Officer Crowe later explained, ‘I thought he was gonna shoot me and, being at the distance, and me running, I was, I was honestly fear, in fear for my life just because the distance and at that point, he had his gun out,’” the letter continued. “’I did not have my gun out. And I was in, in the wide-open.’”

The suspect got into a car and left the parking lot, which prompted a pursuit. The chase ended when the suspect crashed into a tree near East 115th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. Two officers ordered the suspect out of his car. He eventually did by standing on the hood. Both officers saw the suspect holding the handgun

in his right hand.

Two officers fired a total of six shots at the suspect, according to the DA’s letter. The shots apparently missed the suspect; he continued on over the fence. A foot chase began, and the suspect continued to run with the gun in his hand, the letter said.

“The homeowner of a residence nearby called 911 to report that the suspect entered her home and said that he was injured and needed help,” the letter said. “He pointed a gun at her and demanded her car and car keys. She refused and the suspect eventually ran away.”

Officers observed damage and evidence of entry to a nearby residence.

Some of the stolen items included keys to a Jeep, which was stolen from the garage and later recovered but with no sign of the suspect. Investigators later linked Quintana to this burglary as well as an incident in Denver in which Quintana crashed into a Denver police car.

Five days later, officers found Quintana in a Westminster apartment. He took his own life after several hours of negotiations, according to the DA’s letter.

The 17th Judicial Critical Incident Response team was in charge of the investigation. Westminster police detective Steve Sanders and Adams County sheriff’s detective Dylan Lussier were the lead investigators. They presented their findings to DA Brian Mason in June. The work included law enforcement reports, audio and video recorded interviews and photographs.

Stone said it’s been refreshing working with Adams County’s staff to open the cafe. She’s used to working with much busier Denver County agencies and social service groups.

“The Denver programs are so large, but in Adams County, there seems to be a lot of crossover,” Stone said. “Everybody here knows everybody else and all the programs work closely together. Our program is just three weeks old, but we’ve already met and worked with so many different county agencies.”

Program participants will train with professional chefs, earn certifications, earn up to $400 per month and complete training in six weeks. There are also food truck internships available as part of the program. Classes start every Monday and program hours are from 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Residents who are interested in participating should call 720.660.0159.

“We are hearing from restaurants that they can’t find anybody to hire,” Adams County Commissioner Emma Pinter said. “Well, Work Options is here to help and get Adams County residents ready for new jobs in the foodservice field.”

No shortcuts, Northglenn councilors agree

The vacant spot in Northglenn’s Ward 1 will remain vacant after City Councilors discussed giving the sole candidate for the seat a shortcut.

“Our candidate in Ward 1 has nobody running against him. Is it possible to bring him in early since there is nobody running against him and he is going to get elected?” City Councilor Becky Brown asked her council colleagues Sept. 13.

Brown brought up the idea during the council’s Sept. 13 study session reviewing their options to fill the seat left vacant by Randall Peterson.

Peterson’s Ward 1 seat was set to

expire this year. Councilors appointed Peterson to the seat in January 2020 after Meredith Leighty, then a City Councilor for Ward 1, was elected as mayor.

Voters will select five residents to fill five City Council seats this fall.

That includes a seat each in Northglenn’s Wards 1, 2, 3 and 4 as well as the second seat in Ward 4.

Peterson initially filed a petition with the City Clerk saying he planned to seek a full term on this year’s City Council ballot but didn’t complete the nomination paperwork and then abruptly resigned on Aug. 27.

Resident Nicholas Walker is the only candidate on the ballot for Northglenn’s Ward 1, making him

the likely next councilor for that ward.

Brown said her concern was for issues like budget votes that could split an even-numbered City Council, but said she was not wedded to the idea.

“I didn’t think about this until I was literally on my way here to this meeting,” Brown said. “I was for leaving it open, but I just wanted to throw it out and see what the response was.”

Councilor Ashley Witkovich said she had no strong feelings.

“Coming into tonight, I was planning on leaving it open but Becky makes some great points,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to hearing what everyone else has to say.”

But Councilor Joyce Downing said she wanted to leave the seat vacant.

“I really think that since we are so close to the election, it makes sense to leave it vacant,” Downing said. “I had not thought about Becky’s suggestion and it is an option. But when you consider all the things that fall into place at the time, I’d be prone to leave it vacant.”

Peterson’s seat is the second on the council to become vacant this year. Antonio Esquibel resigned in May because he and his wife moved to Utah. Shannon Lukeman-Hiromasa was appointed in his place until November. Lukeman-Hiromasa is running unopposed for a two-year term in Ward 4 in the November election.

Utah-based health care group merging with SCL health

SCL Health, which runs Platte Valley and Lutheran medical centers, and Utah-based Intermountain Health announced their intent to merge on Sept. 16.

When complete — perhaps early next year — the combined nonprofit system will employ more than 58,000 caregivers and operate 33 hospitals, and it will operate 385 clinics across six states, according to a press statement.

Linda Jumonville, president and

CEO of SCL Health, and Dr. Marc Harrison, CEO of Intermountain Health, based in Salt Lake City, said the merger wouldn’t mean layoffs or changes in available products/ services.

“This merger wasn’t done with a need to cut costs,” Jumonville said.

“We operate efficiently because there is no geographic overlap. I expect very little change, other than to accelerate innovative approaches faster.”

“Day to day, we’re going to work to get better with the tools we bring to bear,” Harrison said.

SCL Health is a a faith-based organization affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Intermountain Healthcare has been secular since the original hospitals in the system were donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints.

SCL Health will give up its corporate name and overall leadership to the larger Intermountain, but the individual Colorado hospitals such as St. Joseph and Good Samaritan will retain their names and their religious identity. The Intermountain hospitals will remain secular.

Harrison and Jumonville didn’t promise an absence of increased health-care costs once the new company is in place.

“If you go and look at our track record, objectively speaking, we provide high-quality care at low cost,” Harrison said. “The future is bright. We are getting interest from insurers.

“We have great relations with our payers,” Jumonville added. “They believe we are committed to affordable health care. They are going to think this (the merger) is a good thing.”

Mask rules drive parents’ demand for doctor notes Colorado pediatricians are being bombarded with requests

Colorado parents are seeking an end-run around mask requirements at their children’s schools: Doctor’s notes exempting them for dubious medical reasons.

And in mask-averse Douglas County, where elected leaders already opted to create their own health department to sidestep unpopular COVID-19 public health orders, some parents aren’t taking “no” for an answer.

Hundreds of parents have called Pediatrics at the Meadows in Castle Rock to request doctor’s notes — some who turned angry when their requests were denied and promised “physical, financial and political revenge.”

“We understand and empathize

with families who are looking for ways to help their children avoid the burden of mask-wearing. Trust me, I get it,” Dr. Michael Milobsky said in a Facebook post about the flood of calls that left staff members feeling “under attack.”

But Milobsky said the clinic would continue to side with American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendations regarding mask-wearing for children — that, with rare exceptions, they can be “safely worn” by children 2 and older.

Kevin Bracken, Douglas County’s newest representative on the TriCounty Health Department board — a longtime critic of the agency — has asked it to investigate what he alleges was “illegal” activity regarding the video recording of the board’s Aug. 30 meeting.

And another Douglas County representative to the board, Linda Fielding, accused fellow board members of being “compromised” at the meeting.

side schools as a COVID-19 safety measure and to repeal the ability of counties to opt out of its public health orders.

Those actions have met with stout opposition from Douglas County’s elected commissioners, who are taking steps to pull the county out of its 55-year-old relationship with Tri-County, the public-health agency for Douglas, Adams and Arapahoe counties.

The Douglas County School District is enforcing the mask rule, however.

In his email, Bracken referred to his comments at the Aug. 30 meeting.

“I just want it noted that the (video of the) Aug. 30 meeting had a very concerning fast forward through several of the board members’ comments. (Comments of) mine and Dr. Fielding in particular were (affected) more than any other board members,” Bracken said during the Board of Health’s Sept. 9 meeting.

Bracken added: “I find it very concerning if this file was edited.”

‘Was it intentional or not?’

Ronnae Brockman, the TriCounty executive assistant who helps run health board meetings, criticized Bracken’s comments and called them “false claims.”

“If you continue to engage in this hostile and defamatory behavior, I will take legal action against you,” Brockman told Bracken.

Bracken responded that he never alleged that Brockman, specifically, edited the video.

Brockman said that because of her position, when Bracken says a video was edited, “that is defamatory to me.”

“There is a difference between saying, ‘Hey, you guys, I noticed this is something happened on your video,’” Brockman said. “It’s very different than your accusatory email.”

Board President Kaia Gallagher, an Arapahoe County representative, acknowledged there was disruption in the video, saying: “The question really is, was it intentional or not?”

Gallagher said a disruption in recording has occurred before.

“To the extent possible, the TriCounty Health Department staff will look into it,” Gallagher said.

Bracken said the Aug. 30 video is the only file that has been fast-forwarded through “in the recordings I’ve had an opportunity to watch.”

Jan Brainard, another Board of Health member from Arapahoe County, said she remembers that “after the very first Zoom meeting,” referring to a video-conferencing service used to conduct meetings remotely, she noticed a problem with the video recording.

“I called or sent an email to Ronnae (Brockman) and asked her where I could find it, and it was the exact same thing. There were parts

of it missing,” Brainard said.

She added: “My point being that this is not intentional. It was not directed at Mr. Bracken.”

Bracken appears to be correct that his comments at the Aug. 30 meeting were affected by the disruption more than other board members’ comments in the period that runs from roughly 49:00 to 1:12:00 in the recording (available online at tinyurl.com/TriCountyAug30Video), when much of the board discussion took place.

But many comments from John Douglas, executive director of Tri-County Health, were also disrupted, including comments from Douglas that appeared not to be in response to Bracken. Not all of Bracken’s comments were disrupted.

Claims of members ‘compromised’ What could be called the most controversial part of the meeting discussion is still almost entirely intact on the recording. That’s when Fielding references Colorado statute 18-8-306, a state law that prohibits coercion of public officials. The law bars “attempts to influence any public servant.”

“I have information directly about one case, and there may be other cases that I suspect, and this is concerning board members who have been basically compromised because they have had complaints filed against them,” Fielding said during the Aug. 30 meeting.

During the meeting, Fielding called the meeting itself “compromised” and said it should be canceled “until we can resolve the status of those board members.”

It wasn’t clear from her comments which board members Fielding was referring to or where complaints were allegedly filed, and she did not offer evidence to back her claims of coercion. Colorado Community Media reached out to Fielding with questions about the allegations, but she did not respond.

Asked about Fielding’s claims, Becky O’Guin, spokesperson for Tri-County Health, said on Sept. 1: “We ... do not have information on what Dr. Fielding mentioned during the meeting. Any legal issues would be taken up in executive session with the board of health and (its) legal counsel,” An executive session is a closed-door meeting, often held to discuss legal questions.

The school year got underway just as the highly transmissible coronavirus delta variant drove a wave of new infections across Colorado. As of Sept. 13, the state Department of Public Health and Environment reported 80 ongoing outbreaks of the coronavirus at K-12 schools across the state.

In recent says, Dr. Hector de Leon in Fort Collins said he has received at least a dozen requests for doctor’s notes exempting children, and that his colleagues based in Denver have received several requests a day.

Explaining to parents who insist their children not wear a mask has been a challenge at times.

“More often than not we are not able to write these letters,” said de Leon, a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente. “We give families other tips and tools to get the masks going.

I understand that it is a tough thing that parents are faced with. But our job is to try to keep as many kids as possible safe and from getting sick with COVID.” Many pediatricians, like de Leon and Milobsky, stand by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendation for universal mask wearing in schools given that the majority of the student population is ineligible for vaccines. Wearing masks is proven to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 and protect those who are not vaccinated.

Even so, some parents are frustrated and others become upset when de Leon refuses to write the notes, he

said.

“It’s important to start by framing for families why we are doing this and why we are asking for masks, still. The fact is, with children, kids under 12 especially, we don’t have a vaccine for them. So we’re trying to get them back in school in a safe way,” de Leon said.

Jeffco reviews requests As of Sept. 7, Jeffco Public Schools had received 208 mask exemption requests, 59 of which were denied because the application did not meet the requirements outlined by Jeffco Public Health, school district spokeswoman Cameron Bell said.

While the school district does not set the criteria for mask exemptions, it is reviewing requests to ensure they meet the requirements of the public health order issued by the county’s public health department in late August, Bell said.

The Jeffco district also received 281 religious exemption requests, which were all denied as they do not meet the criteria of the public health order, she said.

In southwest Colorado, the schools in San Luis haven’t reported an uptick in doctor’s notes for children, said Toby Melster, superintendent of Centennial School District R-1.

“I’ve seen some of the stories about the contentious board meetings where they are going to be discussing either wearing a mask or not wearing a mask,” Melster said. “But so far, our community has been really good.

We haven’t had a lot of pushback, to be honest with you.”

At least three of the schools in the San Luis Valley that do not require its students to wear masks have had

to quarantine classrooms due to COVID-19 infections, but the Centennial School District, which is based in the town of San Luis and requires masks, has not had to require any of its classes to quarantine thus far, Melster said.

List of reasons is short Despite the large number of requests for notes, the list of medicalbased reasons to not wear a mask is short, said Dr. Sara Saporta-Keating, an infectious disease specialist from Children’s Hospital Colorado.

“Ultimately, what it comes down to is a person’s ability to take a mask off if there is a problem,” SaportaKeating said.

Children younger than 2 are exempt, as are children who physically are unable to take off their mask or unable to communicate that they need the mask off in an emergency situation, she said.

“Really what we try to do is weigh the risk and benefits of wearing the mask versus potentially getting COVID,” she said.

While some parents feel wearing a mask could be difficult for children with asthma, it can actually provide them with more protection and potentially shield them from other respiratory diseases that could trigger an attack, Saporta-Keating said.

She said she received an email from her 4-year-old son’s pediatrician earlier this year — before parents could start requesting notes — stating that the practice would be advising children 2 years and older to wear a mask, in line with AAP’s guidance.

“They were proactive about it,” she said.

“So I certainly think it is not only parents’ peace of mind, but I think the school and teachers’ peace of mind as well, understanding that when there is good mask-wearing, it really decreases the chance of a COVID outbreak occurring within a school,” she said.

Fewer outbreaks in schools also means that children will have more access to their support systems in schools, rather than being isolated at home, Saporta-Keating said.

“We know there are a lot of challenges with mental health, particularly right now,” she said, “but one thing we know is that the return to normalcy and the return to the support systems that children have in their schools is incredibly important and can actually benefit them from a mental health standpoint.”

Biden touts need for bolder response to climate change

“Folks, we’ve got to pick up the pace.”

That was President Joe Biden’s message as he spoke Sept. 14 about his plans to address climate change while creating new jobs during a visit to the National Renewable Energy Lab’s Flatirons campus, located north of the Rocky Flats Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson County.

During his roughly 15-minute speech, Biden touted the need for the federal government to establish more ambitious goals for reducing emissions and addressing climate change than were set even by the Obama administration, in which he served as vice president.

“When those (goals) were set, we had more time,” said Biden. “We don’t have that time now. The goals are different because the necessity is there … We don’t have much more than 10 years, for real.”

Among the new goals set by Biden is for the nation to reach 100% carbon-

free power by 2035. Biden said he also recently announced a new target for the country to reduce its carbon emissions by between 50 and 52% by 2030.

Biden said the need to take bolder, more aggressive steps to address climate change has become starkly apparent recently, with nearly one in three American communities being struck by weather disasters in the past few months.

Biden said within the two weeks before his Colorado stop, he had made visits to California, New Jersey and Louisiana, where he surveyed damage from the Caldor Fire and Hurricane Ida. Coloradans, he said, are also becoming increasingly familiar with the effects of disasters driven by climate change.

“Even if it’s not in your backyard, you feel the effects when you turn on the local weather and in addition to the temperature and precipitation you want to know what the local forecast is going to be…” he said. “You saw the vicious cycle this summer when heavy rains combined with the burn scar of the 2020 Griz-

zly Creek fire resulted in mudslides that washed out an entire section of Interstate 70.”

“The bottom line is it’s everywhere,” he later said.

However, Biden also touted the benefits that an increased focus on addressing climate change would bring, including the creation of wellpaid, union-backed jobs.

“When I think of climate change, I think jobs,” Biden said.

He said those possibilities are already apparent in Biden’s infrastructure bill, which he said would put 800,000 people to work, including a large portion in work related to addressing the climate crisis.

Biden was introduced by Julian Aguilar, a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 68 union of Xcel Energy workers in Colorado.

“Being here at NREL shows the future of our industry, renewable and sustainable energy…” he said.

“When you see all these new technologies you might think the future doesn’t look much like the past, but

one thing the past and the future will have in common is that they be built by unions.”

Xcel Energy is the first utility in the nation to set a goal of being carbon-free, Biden said.

Gov. Jared Polis also spoke at the event at NREL. He thanked Biden for visiting the facility, which he said is “powering the renewable energy revolution,” and said the state will continue to partner with the Federal government as it works to meet its own goal of using 100% renewable energy by 2030.

“President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda directly helps support the work we are doing here in Colorado, one of the leading states on the clean energy revolution,” Polis said.

Biden, who completed a tour of the NREL foothills facility prior to his speech, praised NREL and said the Build Back Better plan also includes more funding for the lab and similar organizations.

“We’ll be making those breakthroughs in solar wind and storage out of these facilities,” he said.

approved the festival’s application for the parade.

Jeff Cannon, a former Harvest Festival Executive Committee Chairman, said that he hoped to convey the historical importance of the Harvest Festival to Council and said that challenges lie ahead as the Committee tries to bring the Festival back next year.

“We want to tell them what the Harvest Festival means to everybody,” said Cannon. “We’re hoping to share stories and relay how important 96 years of the Harvest Festival have been. We don’t feel that it’s going to be an easy thing to come back from, especially after being gone for two years.”

The festival dates back to October 1925 and has primarily been hosted by the Arvada Jaycees and the Arvada Junior Chamber Foundation with the support of the city. The festival was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve weathered World War II, polio and even COVID-19 for the festival,” Cannon continued, “but two years in a row is going to be tough to come back from. We hope that City Council will say they want to continue the Harvest Festival.”

Festival organizers announced days later that without the carnival and midway, the event was no longer feasible for 2021 due to the carnival and midway supplying the main revenue streams for the Festival.

Arvada resident Connie Cridlebaugh said she’s been going to the Harvest Festival her whole life and was disappointed in the event’s cancellation this year.

“I’ve been going (to the Harvest Festival) since I was a little kid,” said Cridlebaugh. “It’s something my whole family gets together and goes to. The parade and the festival are a tradition. We didn’t have it last year and I was really looking forward to it this year. Things are different now.”

the Harvest Festival’s special events permit and general decision making regarding the direction of the city.

Dave Palm, an Arvada resident, said before the council meeting that he felt the city was moving away from a community-centric feel.

“We’ve got a mayor and (city) council that don’t understand the concept of community,” said Palm. “Arvada has been a community in the past.

What they’ve brought us is a city; a northwest LoDo.” Carl Campenella, a member of the Harvest Festival Executive Committee, said that he felt that the city has been dishonest with the Committee.

“If the city had been honest with us, a lot of this hassle would have been gone; there wouldn’t have been a loss of trust,” said Campanella. “I think we’ll return, but I doubt it will be in Olde Town. I think they’ll keep it out of Olde Town like they did this year.”

Harvest Festival Booth Director Matt Palm — Dave’s son — said the Committee, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), lost money this year due to the cancellation.

“The Harvest Festival went in the hole this year,” said Matt. “At the time of the cancellation, we had about 30 vendors.”

“It sucks,” said Palm.

Northwest highcountry counties including Routt, Jackson, Eagle, Summit and Grand are grouped with Larimer and Boulder into a proposed 2nd Congressional District. And the new districts would no longer pit Garfield County Republican U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert against Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse of Lafayette.

The map is the second to be drawn by nonpartisan staff based on 2020 census data, and incorporates input from the public about previous drafts.

Commissioners voted earlier in September to base the latest map on one drawn by Commissioner Martha Coleman, a Democrat from Fort Collins who is a geographer.

The latest map would create three safe Democratic districts, three safe Republican districts and competitive 7th and 8th Congressional Districts, according to a report by nonpartisan legislative staff.

In three districts, the Hispanic population would make up more than a quarter of the total district.

The latest map is markedly different from two previous proposals. Here’s a look at

how the districts shape up: The 1st District centered in Denver remains safe for Democratic U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, with a 57% Democratic advantage The 2nd District still includes Boulder and Fort Collins, but stretches west to Routt County and includes Summit and most of Eagle County. It also includes Neguse’s home in Lafayette, and would give Democrats a nearly 34% advantage.

The 3rd District stretches from Moffat County in the northwest, south through Mesa and Pitkin counties to Cortez and La Plata counties, then east to Pueblo and Las Animas County. Unlike a map released earlier this month, Boebert’s Silt home remains in the 3rd District, and she’d have a nearly 10% GOP advantage.

The 4th District still includes much of the Eastern Plains, as well as Windsor and much of Douglas County.

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Ken Buck of Windsor would have a nearly 27% advantage.

The 5th District includes most of El Paso County, except for some eastern areas that end up in the 4th District. It would remain safe for incumbent U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn with a 20% GOP advantage.

The 6th District includes most of Aurora and Arapahoe County, a safe seat for incumbent Rep. Jason Crow,

of Centennial, with a 15% Democratic advantage.

The 7th District now includes most of Jefferson County, but also small portions of Adams, Boulder, Broomfield, Douglas and El Paso counties as well as all of seven mountain counties. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, of Arvada, would find himself in a potentially competitive district with a 6% Democratic advantage.

The new 8th District includes much of Adams and Weld counties, including Greeley, Thornton, Commerce City and much of Westminster. Democratic state Rep. Yadira Carveo, of Thornton, recently announced plans to run in the district, which has a Democratic advantage of about 4%.

The political competitiveness of the districts is based on an average of election results from eight statewide races between 2016 and 2020.

The percentages above represent the difference between the percent of votes cast for a Republican candidate and the percent of votes cast for a Democratic candidate.

There’s disagreement about what constitutes a “competitive district.” While the Independent Legislative Redistricting Commission views an advantage of 8.5% or lower as a competitive district, the congressional commission hasn’t defined a

Morgan Carroll, chair of the Colorado Democratic Party, disputed the congressional commission’s formula for determining the political competitiveness of a district.

“Measuring competitiveness by focusing on strong years for one party and ignoring 2014 — which was a strong year for the other party — is simply wrong,” Carroll said in a statement.

“As a result, this could very likely end up a 4-4 map after the midterms, which is in no way reflective of Colorado voters.”

Currently, four of Colorado’s seven U.S. House members are Democrats. Members of Congress don’t need to live

in the district they represent.

A third congressional map drawn by staff may be released Sept. 23, if the commission doesn’t adopt a plan before then. The commission must adopt a map by Sept.

28 to submit to the Colorado Supreme Court by Oct. 1.

Candidates weigh in on public safety tax, debt

ne of the Westminster TABOR ballot questions would increase the existing Public Safety sales and use tax by 15/100 of 1% without an expiration date. It is projected to initially generate $5 million annually. Also, new bond authorization of $25 million is included.

We asked the candidates for Westminster City Council if they support both parts of this proposal, and why or why not?

On the bond issue, would they support it if I told you that up to $1.5 million of the $5 million would be spent on debt service annually?

If the bond issue was to fund a new municipal court facility, would you support it? Why or why not? If not, would you still vote for the combined proposal?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Keep it clean As the November election approaches, citizens are deciding for whom to vote.

The Westminster City Council has had to deal with a variety of challenges over the past few years and following the election, the Council could have as many as 70% new members.

I don’t know what issues will arise. However, as important is how those issues will be discussed. I challenge all candidates for Westminster City Council to take a civility pledge, a commitment to discuss issues in a civil manner with respect for others and to recognize that diverse perspectives lead to better decisions.

Any candidate who is willing to publicly commit to a civility pledge will go a long way in earning my vote.

Finally, I encourage all councilors to constantly remind themselves that their role is to consider the greater good of the citizens of Westminster, not represent a personal belief system.

Teachers have a special gift and calling.

My admiration for the teaching community only increases as they continue to pour into their students while giving tirelessly of themselves.

By the way, I am including the entire teaching community. Educators at every level, coaches, mentors, trainers, corporate learning teams. Each person who has a platform to develop their students, learners, and those they coach must deal with the very same things as someone who is teach-

ing in a classroom, teaching virtually, or in some hybrid delivery model.

What can we talk about? What can’t we say? Where are the boundaries?

Are there any boundaries? How do we stay healthy? How can we keep our students safe? Is what we taught yesterday still relevant, let alone accepted today? Are there new skills, thoughts and theories that need to be explored? These are just a few of the variables and curveballs being thrown at those responsible for our education and personal and professional development.

Here is the upside. Never in history has the learning community been in such a position to acquire knowledge through academic, coaching, and training best practices coupled with access to information. And never has there been a time where we have had the opportunity to experience life with all its conflicts, contrasts, and challenges that we are living through today. Teaching theory, providing structure and concepts for problemsolving are important. And when we add the potency of real-world experiential learning to the solid fundamentals and advanced applications of teaching we have an enormous opportunity for growth.

Some believe that experience is life’s greatest teacher. This is only true if we learn from those experiences. The important thing is that when we fail, and we will, that we learn from that failure. Equally as important is that when we succeed, we learn from our successes. If we will let it, life has so much to teach us when it comes to understanding

families, including our first responders, as this will yield a higher quality of response for all residents.

I’m also passionate about eliminating partisan politics from the council and focusing on problem-solving for our residents - and that starts with listening to the preferences of all constituents.”

Kristine Ireland “I would vote no on both measures. Public safety is a need we can’t neglect, but I believe money can probably be found by looking at less essential items in the budget.

Until there is a thorough independent accounting of the money the city is already spending, I would be reluctant to burden residents with an additional tax. Total sales tax in Westminster is already higher than that of surrounding cities Broomfield, Thornton, and Arvada.

Furthermore, it wasn’t long ago that city leaders skirted Tabor by pushing through a huge tax increase in the form of significantly higher water rates.”

Karen Kalavity “I would support a sales/use tax of 15/100 of 1% for public safety.

This could ensure proper/competi-

tive wages for police officers and updated/beautifying additions to the existing Westminster Court House. This “new” construction would be dependent upon net-zero energy strategies such as geothermal/solar/water to ensure the structure adds no fossil fuel use/ pollution and effectively pays for itself in the future. A bond authorization for Open Space? I would encourage Open Space that benefits our native animals/environments with property tax savings/incentives to individual property owners through re-zoning of agriculture/ wildlife habitat designations rather than through purchase from the city.”

Sarah Nurmela “As a city planner, I understand that growth and change in communities require additional public safety services to maintain a high level of service. I believe this tax is a great opportunity to both meet and expand our public safety services. If a portion of the tax revenues could be applied toward debt service on a new municipal court facility, I would support that expenditure. As I understand it, our existing facility does not meet current safety and court needs. However, whether I would approve the expenditure would depend on weighing it against other service priorities.”

Kathryn Skulley “The voters have the right to decide tax increases and imposed new taxes. The revenue should be earmarked so its purpose is clear and transparent. This permits the city to be accountable to the residents. Sunsetting a tax is dependent upon the purpose of the tax increase or new tax and be determined by and part of the ask of the voters. I support the funding of new existing or building of a municipal court facility, whereas transparent to and approved by the voters because the building is aging and deteriorating.

I would vote for a combined proposal.”

Bruce Baker “I will vote no. I know of no failure, crisis or deficiency in the Public Safety work of Westminster.

What would this additional money fix? Why did the council send a forever, 25% tax increase to the ballot without there being a thoughtful, deliberate process that arrives at a true, explainable reason and need?”

David DeMott “Public safety is the most important function of government. With the growing crime and challenges maintaining staffing levels, we need to remain competitive in both police and fire to attract and keep employees in these lines of work. We must have adequate funding sources to

provide tools to keep our community, officers and firefighters safe.

Access to justice is a bedrock of our way of life. The City of Westminster is in dire need to replace the courthouse, with a number of issues facing the current building that would be best addressed with a new facility.”

Candidates split An interesting aside among the nine council candidates, shows they are divided on this ballot proposition. Four were in favor, three did not support it and two were either neutral or failed to respond. This composite response tracks the polling done on this issue earlier this summer. The polling showed 55% (21% Definitely Yes) in support and 31% (18% No) with 13% undecided.

Public safety and open space taxes are the best supported usually among municipal voters. I think city leaders who support combining the tax increase with a $25 million debt authorization are forcing voters into approving new debt. This is a coy maneuver to put both approvals into a single question.

Local teen finished seventh in Tokyo Olympics

W

hen Colin Duffy first laid eyes on an indoor climbing wall, he was only 3 years old.

The colorful holds drew his attention and he begged his parents to let him give the sport a try. By 7, he was climbing in full-sized gyms. And now, at 17, Duffy was the youngest competitor in the first-ever Olympic sport climbing event.

“I think I just love how unique of a physical challenge it is,” he said about the sport. “Not only do you have to be strong enough to solve the climbs and problems but you also have to use your brain, figuring out body position and what the best strategy is going to be for each route.”

Duffy, a Broomfield resident and a student of Stargate Charter School in the Adams 12 district, grew up climbing in the area. He frequents local rock climbing gyms like G1 Climbing + Fitness, and his favorite local spot to climb outdoors is Rocky Mountain National Park.

Duffy qualified for this year’s Olympic Games in 2020 when he won the International Federation of Sport Climbing’s Pan American Championship in Los Angeles.

“I was kind of just awestruck after qualifying,” he said. “It didn’t really feel real.”

Then, the Olympic Games were delayed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Leading up to the Tokyo Olympics, Duffy, like many Olympic athletes, had to face a variety of new training methods due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For several months, gyms were closed and Duffy had to practice his climbing on an at-home wall in his basement.

When gyms opened, he adjusted to training while wearing a mask. Then, two weeks before the climbing competitions started, he traveled with the rest of the four-person U.S. team to Tokyo in early August. Once in Japan, Duffy and his colleagues began to work on acclimating to the humid, hot weather they’d be competing in.

“I think the most noticeable difference for me was the heat,” Duffy said. “I’ve always been used to dry heat and a lack of humidity, so being in such an intense climate and having to compete outdoors in that was really kind of hard to adjust to.”

ven a casual drive around the Denver metro area will unveil a bevy of architectural gems, with even more design secrets hiding behind doors you might not expect. But since getting an invite to house parties at all these places was dubious even before a global pandemic, the Denver Architecture Foundation hosts Doors Open Denver to share these built environment stories.

This year’s event begins on Monday, Sept.

27 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 17 and features a blend of virtual and in-person tours. The free, virtual tours are available on-demand and include four 2021 stops and 12 archived stops from last year’s event.

In-person tours take place Saturdays and Sundays with four tours per day, according to provided information. Sites include the Clyfford Still Museum, the Historic Elitch Theater, the Historic 11th Avenue Hostel and the US. Olympic and Paralympic Museum. Tickets for in-person tours are available but are expected to be in high demand.

As part of the event, the Y/OUR Denver photography competition will also be back, accepting entries through Thursday, Oct. 23. The corresponding exhibit of top entries will open to the public virtually in December.

We spoke to Pauline Herrera, Denver Architecture Foundation executive director,

about this year’s event and what you need to know: How did you go about planning this year’s event, with the pandemic still going?

We began planning in late 2020. Since, at the time, we did not know where things were headed with the pandemic, we decided to pursue a virtual event for 2021, like we had in 2020. We remained open, however, to including in-person opportunities, if that became possible. We’re glad it did and that we’re able to present a hybrid event this year.

In the bouldering event, athletes attempt to scale short, challenging pre-set routes, also known as problems, which are made up of plastic imitation rocks of various shapes and sizes. The walls in this event are about 15 feet high and surrounded by large pads. Climbers don’t use any rope for this event.

During lead climbing, the athletes are tied into a rope as they see how high they can get on a wall more than 50 feet high. As they climb, the competitors attach their rope into clips placed along the wall. On the ground, a belayer attached to the same rope is ready to catch the climber if they fall or finish the route.

While each route and problem in the lead climbing and bouldering disciplines is unique and never-before-seen by the athletes, the speed climbing event is different in that it presents the same route in every competition. Athletes dart up this standard route to see how quickly they can press a touchpad at the top. The fastest speed at the finals of the Olympics was 6.02 seconds.

In this year’s Olympics, climbers were required to participate in

all three events, with their score being determined by how they ranked in each one. Some in the sport criticized this format because of the inherent differences between speed climbing and the other two disciplines.

Duffy’s favorite climbing events are bouldering and lead climbing, he said. In the next Olympic games, there will be one competition for speed climbing and one combining bouldering and lead.

Duffy was one of eight climbers who made it into the Olympic finals out of 20 male athletes. In the finals, he finished seventh overall. In the speed competition he ranked fifth, with 6.35 as his fastest time. In the bouldering event he finished in fourth place, and in the lead competition he ranked third.

Nathaniel Coleman, the other male climber from the U.S., took silver in the competition. Brooke Raboutou — from Boulder, Colorado — placed fifth in the women’s competition.

“I had a lot of fun,” Duffy said.

“I think a lot of people probably look at it as the most intense event possible, but I think outside of the competition days, being around the village and being surrounded by so many incredible athletes, everyone is always smiling and just happy to be there with their teammates.”

Enjoying the games As the youngest climber there, Duffy felt like he was able to relax and not put too much pressure on himself, he said.

“I think it allowed me to climb pretty loosely, especially in the qualifiers, I felt like I had nothing to lose being the youngest one there,” he said. “I know I’ll have other opportunities in the future, and being so young, there’s really no pressure or expectations on me, so my main goal was just to have fun.”

Due to the pandemic, Duffy’s family was not able to attend the games in person and instead had to wake up each night of the event about 2 a.m. to watch the competition in real time. But Nancy Duffy, Colin’s mom, said it wasn’t difficult to stay alert.

“When your kid is going, you’re nervous,” she said. “So it’s easy to stay awake at that point.”

Duffy hopes to compete again in the next Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024, he said.

“I just hope in the future that climbing continues to gain recognition. I think it’s a sport that … people are really fascinated by,” he said. “It’s much different than the traditional sports you’ll see. Hopefully people that watch the Olympics really enjoy it and it starts to gain more traction.”

Remembering Brethren Fast Music community fondly recall Don Messina, Mik Messina and Gordon Beesley

For those who were around the Denver music scene in the ‘90s, Brethren Fast needs no introduction. The purveyors of “electrified hillbilly hot-rod funk” charmed audiences and contemporaries alike with their good looks, groovy riffs and racing team outfits for over a decade, during which they rose to prominence as one of — if not the — most visible bands in Colorado.

During their peak in the late ‘90s — which included sponsorships from Harley Davidson and Budweiser, along with gigs playing Broncos and Avalanche games — the band consisted of brothers Don “Dynamite” Messina on vocals and guitar, Mik “The Stick” Messina on bass and Gordon Beesley on drums.

Tragically, all three of the Brethren Fast members met untimely deaths. Don died in a 2015 car accident on Lookout Mountain, Mik died of organ failure in July and Beesley — who became an Arvada Police officer in 2002 — was killed in the Olde Town Arvada shooting in June.

Though their time was unduly cut short, their far-reaching influence on the local music culture continues to be felt today.

Their albums Sideburns from Hell, What in the Hell?, 500 Laps of Beer Drinkin’ Fun and Diesel Drivin Buddies earned them placements on MTV, Fox Sports and the Discovery Channel, and their raucous live shows saw them playing nearly 200 gigs a year at during their peak.

The band started in 1995 after the dissolution of Don’s project Elik Pink. By that time, Mik and Don had spent a few years playing in different projects and decided they wanted to join forces.

“The brothers played in a bunch

of different bands separately and then in the mid-90’s locked in on playing together and kind of rotated through drummers,” said G. Brown, who was one of the Denver Post’s music reporters at the time. “But when they got Gordon in there, that’s when they had their heyday, if you will.”

While the trio started out with Ordy Garrison behind the kit, Beesley soon took the sticks and continued playing with the group until other responsibilities demanded more of his attention. He was replaced by Nate “Dawg” Nicholsen for the latter years of the group’s run.

Brown says Beesley was integral to the group’s sound.

“You need a guy to lock it down in the back,” said Brown. “And Gordon was able to do that for them. He was their most notable drummer — that was kind of a rotating position. I think they had a couple of guys play before and after, but Gordon had the longest stint.”

Those who knew the Brethren Fast guys recall them as kindhearted, approachable people who loved to have a good time.

Wendy Clark played hundreds of shows alongside Brethren Fast with her band Tequila Mockingbird, and says the band always made themselves available and kindly offered tips.

“They were really sweet, good guys,” said Clark. “They were definitely rock stars. If you’re a different band, they’re just regular guys. Mik especially — all the girls had a crush on him. Gordon was, I think, the nicest drummer I’ve ever met. They were sweet, approachable guys.

“They gave us a lot of different advice,” Clark continued. “It’s simple stuff sometimes, like `walk towards the stage when you have a solo’ and `walk backwards when you’re letting someone else have the stage.’

Just good advice.”

World Trade Center steel is part of new 9/11 memorial near DIA

On a small field just behind the garage doors at Denver Fire Department’s House 35 on E. 75th Avenue sits a mangled piece of steel. Recovered from the World Trade Center, the worn piece of metal represents incredible loss.

Installed this summer, 20 years after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, this is now a permanent location for reflection of the emotions from that tragic day.

“9/11 are numbers that are forever seared into our consciousness. We hear that combination of numbers and are instantly transported back to that day. We recall where we were, who we were with, what we were doing. And that abrupt interruption,” said Mary Dulacki, the chief deputy executive director for Denver’s Department of Safety.

On Sept. 10, the eve of the 20th anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, Denver International Airport, the Denver Fire Department, the Denver Police Department and the Denver Department of Public Safety dedicated a 9/11 memorial to honor the fallen civilians and first responders.

“On this infamous day, four

separate planes were hijacked and intentionally crashed — one into the Pentagon, one into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and two into the World Trade Center, killing nearly 3,000 innocent people on one of the worst days in our history,” said Denver Fire Chief Desmond Fulton.

Standing in front of the memorial, DIA’s CEO, Phil Washington, brought focus to the heroes from that day.

“It changed not just the aviation industry forever, but it changed this country forever. On that horrific day 20 years ago we saw the heroic efforts from emergency responders: police, fire, paramedics. We also saw such effort from airline employees, passengers and so many others,” Washington said.

The piece of steel was donated by the Counterterrorism Education Learning Lab (CELL), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of terrorism through education, empowerment and engagement.

The ceremony included a moment of silence, a solemn song led by the sound of bagpipes and the laying of two wreaths. It also paid honor to lives lost in the years since 9/11.

Many speakers encouraged Americans to never forget the significance of this day – but also to keep looking forward with a commitment to improved safety and performance of first responders.

“In honor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and those who responded to the unthinkable 20 years ago, let us remember the spirit of resilience that we exhibited so brilliantly after that unimaginative tragedy,” added Dulacki. “Let us unite again to address what often appear as insurmountable challenges, but which we know we can handle.”

Climb honors the fallen, 20 years later Colorado 9/11 Stair Climb maxed out attendance

The American flag flew high above the red rocks Sept. 11, as the notes from “Amazing Grace” rang out from the bagpipes and drums below. Twelve hundred firefighters and community members stood in silence before ascending the ramp into Red Rocks Amphitheatre to begin the Colorado 9/11 Stair Climb — a climb of 110 stories in honor of the firefighters who died on Sept. 11, 2001.

“It’s been 20 years since September 11, 2001 and so this year is extra special because last year we didn’t have a climb due to the pandemic,” said Shawn Duncan, captain at West Metro Fire and coordinator of the Colorado 9/11 Stair Climb. “So the fact that we can get together and climb in person today and remember the 343 firefighters that we lost and 3,000 Americans 20 years ago is huge.”

This years event was capped at 1,200 registrants plus children to allow for social distancing. In the past, the event has hosted about 4,000 participants.

remembering everybody and all the people that are special to us,” said Mike Simons, of West Metro Fire.

Simons climbed this year in honor of Zach Lewis, a young firefighter with Rattlesnake Fire, who died in as accident recently.

“He was always up here climbing with us and he was a young kid who had a great future ahead of him and he died tragically, so he climbs with me today,” Simons said, in reference to the photo of Lewis tucked into his helmet.

Duncan said that even though 20 years has past, this event is still important because FDNY continues to lose firefighters due to 9/11 related illnesses and families are still dealing with the loss and tragedy of that day.

“I saw someone post something the other day that said, I miss Sept.

12, 2001,” Duncan said to the crowd at Red Rocks. And that really struck a nerve with me. I’ve been having really hard time the last couple months with the decisiveness in our country right now. But think back to Sept. 12, 2001, the only thing that mattered is that we were Americans and we were people and it really brought us all together.”

born yet,” Duncan said before the climb. “So it’s really meaningful to me and all us firefighters that you’re here to remember. We made a promise to never forget 20 years ago and this is how we keep that promise.”

One of those participants that wasn’t born yet is Adeline Robinson, 17. Robinson is in the firefighter training program at Warren Tech.

She said even though 9/11 happened before she was born, it’s still important to her to honor the firefighters and show respect for the profession she is training for.

While there was no official in-person event in 2020, some firefighters like Raul Alvarez, with Timberline Fire Protection District, climbed anyway.

“We did it last year when nobody was here because of Covid,” Alvarez said. “We still came up and did our own. There were still a couple of firefighters here. I like doing this just the memorial of fellow firefighters that have passed and everybody, the victims. That’s why I walk. Just to memorialize them.”

For some, the event has become about more than just remembering the firefighters lost on 9/11.

recalls the trio as scene builders who preferred to build community rather than be competitive with other bands.

“Brethren, we had known them and had done some small shows with them, and they were great,” said Elias. “They were good guys… they got us into some rooms. They got big and we were playing the Bluebird and the Gothic and all the other theatres in town — well heck, there was no other band we really wanted to share those bills with than Brethren Fast.

“We just had a great time together,” Elias continued. “They were scene builders. They were out to build; they weren’t out to compete with other bands or musicians.

That’s what was so great. and that was a lesson I learned from them early, that that was a better position to be in, to be a scene builder and there was no competition between a bunch of small-town bands. The better we all did, the better we all did.

And that was a real strong movement for all the bands in the ‘90s in Denver.”

“All of a sudden they were geared out, and then of course, everybody wants to copy their style and then all the girls started to wear outfits with pinstripes down the pants and everything,” said Burg. “And I’m like — ‘this is the ‘90s right now.’”

Jeff Gray was Brethren Fast’s photographer during the band’s peak, and said that when Beesley initially joined the group, he didn’t quite fit into the band’s aesthetic.

“The first photoshoot that we went to go do, Gordon is like two feet taller than Mik and Don,” said Gray. “So, I showed up and Mik and Don are in their usual gear — like chrome, jumpsuits, done up to the hill — and for the first photoshoot the best Gordon could do is a Sunday suit, a business suit. So, we tried to figure out how the hell we were going to make this mesh for the first photoshoot together.

“And I ended up having to put Gordon in the back because he was so much taller, and we went to a bridge that is right by the downtown Denver skatepark now, and we did some shots down there in a field right there kind of goofing around,” Gray continued. “I think we got some Elvis glasses on him to have him blend in a little bit more. Gordon just always had a smile on his face. they all did, our photoshoots were super fun. lots of joking around, lots of brainstorming.”

At another photoshoot, Gray recalled the trio trying — and failing — to maintain a serious demeanor at the Colorado Raceway.

“We went to an old broken down early ‘40s Ford that was sitting in the back like junk,” said Gray. “I wanted to do a serious shot because most everything we did was goofing around. I wanted to do one where they were mean mugging like tough guys, which wasn’t in any of their personalities at all.

“And Don and Mik kind of seriousuped for me, and then Gordon, the most serious he could get was sitting there grinning,” Gray continued.

“But I think he was so happy to be in that band and just a happy person with everything and to be around those guys.”

“Fast cars, fast motorcycles and fast women” The Brethren Fast boys were not just known for their hospitality and scene building efforts. The trio, who grew up in Golden, were known motorcycle enthusiasts, a passion which culminated in a sponsorship with Harley-Davidson, yielding custom-made Brethren Fast racing team jumpsuits.

They were known to occasionally ride their bikes onto the stage to start gigs and would sometimes perform in their racing suits. Motorcycles were a core facet not just of the band’s iconography, but of the member’s lives; Mik and Don were known to ride Harleys and Gordon would later become a motorcycle officer with APD. night before Thanksgiving, that huge drinking night,” said Burg, “and the drummer from the Red Hot Chili Peppers was dating someone that lived in Colorado and then he got up on stage and was jamming with them and all the other rock bands like Furious George (and the Monster Groove) and all these people.

“Everybody’s up on stage rapping and singing and playing the instruments,” Burg continued. “It was fun. It was so much of a community.

Everybody loved them” As the trio progressed into middle-age, familial and professional obligations began to phase them out of the scene. The band was less active during the Messina brothers’ final years, but continued to play the odd gig here and there, and Beesley would depart to be the founding drummer of The Railbenders.

Clark said that the Denver music scene has changed drastically in their absence, shifting more to an every-person-for-themselves climate.

“I’d say it’s gotten a little more

saturated,” said Clark. “I would say everybody’s in a band, it seems like.

And a lot of bands aren’t as committed to each other, in my opinion, as they used to be. (Tequila Mockingbird) had a lineup for 12 years that stayed together.

“Everybody was friends and we all knew what band we were all in, rather than them being in seven different bands,” Clark continued.

“It seemed like it was more of a family. I feel like there was a lot of competition, but in the right way. we were all competitive, but we were all family.”

Gray said that one of his last conversations with Beesley involved the two commiserating over teaching their kids about boomboxes.

“Maybe 6 months ago, I had posted a picture of my daughter with an 80’s boombox,” said Gray. “And Gordon called me up and said that he was explaining to his boys what a boombox was. And we just talked about philosophy, talked about the funness of teaching your kids what an 80s boombox is.”

Losing key players is no problem for Riverdale Ridge

THORNTON -- If anyone thought Riverdale Ridge’s softball team might lose a step this season, a second guess might be forthcoming.

The Ravens, who advanced to the state 4A quarterfinals a year ago, lost pitcher Makenna Meyer, catcher Destiny Hackney and infielder Nikki Waddle, among others, to graduation. Yet with a cast sprinkled with newcomers and some veterans, RRHS has a record of 14-3, entering play this week.

“It is very surprising,” said coach Ray Garza. “I don’t they’ve been replaced.

We’ve got girls who have filled the shoes and have done some great things. The girls have bought into the girls we replaced them with. Wow. It’s been amazing to see.”

“It’s been a rollercoaster, for sure,” said Sydnee Fordham, whose four hits helped the Ravens to a 14-4 win over Niwot Sept.

16. “Our team is really young. We have a lot of freshmen on our team. They’ve stepped up and filled their roles. Our seniors have also taken on some large roles.

Our starting shortstop, third baseman and centerfielder are seniors.”

Fordham said there was a different sense of chemistry this year.

“There are a lot of younger girls,” she said. “It’s not like we are building from something we had. It was building from basically nothing. To fill those spots, we’ve created relationships.”

Fordham said the success was a surprise to her.

“I did not think we were going to be as good,” Fordham said. “Our freshman pitcher stepped up, and so did our upperclassmen.”

Fordham is a senior and feels like an extra coach on the field.

“I lead by example. I’m a captain, but I’m not a vocal person,” she said. “I get my job done. It’s hard to take on the responsibility. I’ve done an OK job with that and filling my role. I have fun on and off the field.

On the field, I’m more serious -- get the job done and be friends off the field.”

Garza said some of the Ravens’ inexperience may have played a part in the three losses.

“We could easily be undefeated,” Garza said. “We have to keep fighting. My hat’s tipped to all their coaches during the summer. I have very little to do with this. I just try to keep the engine running.”

Five games remain on the Ravens’ schedule, including a contest with perennial softball power Frederick High School.

“I get the opportunity to build a teamunity piece,” Garza said. “I don’t take credit for any of these girls. I try to be the mold and the glue. We’re trying to find that strong bond. We’re going to do what we can and continue this nice ride. Hopefully, we can finish strong.”

“It’s a fun team,” Fordham said. “This is the best team we’ve had.”

Volleyball Mountain Range topped Littleton 25-17, 25-16 at a tournament at Thornton High School Sept. 18. . The Mustangs also beat Adams City 25-8, 25-22. No stats were available for either match/ The Mustangs’ third win of the week came at the expense of Overland High School Sept. 16 by scores of 25-12, 25-14, 25-21. No stats were available.

Golf Hayden Shipshock was the Mustangs’ team medalist at the Front Range League meet Sept. 14 at Harmony Golf Club. He fired an 83.

Jackson Shipshock finished his round with a 99, and Jarrett Benedict carded a 102.

The Mustangs finished 18th in the team standings.

Tennis Boulder blanked Mountain Range 7-0 Sept. 14 on the Panthers’ courts. All seven matches lasted the minimum two sets.

Westminster High School Volleyball Westminster beat Far Northeast Warriors 25-21, 25-6, 25-9 in Denver Sept. 13. Mattie Gurule led the Wolves with 12 kills. Isabella Rhodes added eight.

Desrae Kelly and Sharneal Polk had three kills for FNE. The Wolves beat Lincoln 25-11, 25-22 at a tournament at Thornton High School Sept. 18. No stats were available.

Cross country Westminster’s Hector Guerrero Alonso placed 89th in the boys race at the Arvada West Durden Invitational Sept. 17 at Stenger Complex.

He turned in a time of 24:43.3.

Football Westminster tripped up Far Northeast Warriors 20-16 in Westminster Sept. 16.

Anthony Rodriguez threw for 206 yards and touchdown passes to Quentin Lor,Alexander FuentesVargas and Domenic Ciari for the Wolves. Victor Lopez ran the ball nine times for 79 yards.

Dre’monti Jackson rushed for 121 yards for the Warriors.

Soccer Westminster downed Skyview 3-1 in Westminster Sept. 14. No stats were available.

The Wolves won their second game of the week Sept. 16, a 3-0 decision at Severance. No stats were available.

Softball Prairie View beat Westminster 17-2 in 2 1/2 innings in Brighton Sept. 14.

Jasmine Bonner, Navina Montoya Olivas and Jaiden Pierce had the Wolves’ base hits. Zoey Gallegos drove in four runs for the ThunderHawks.

Brighton scored 12 runs in the fourth inning and went on to a 17-0 win at Westminster Sept. 16. The state’s mercy rule ended the contest after the fourth inning.

Gabby Rodriguez had two hits and four RBIs. Alison Martinez had three hits and as many RBIs. Jordyn Martinez had a base hit and drove in two runs. Kasey Dean struck out eight in three innings of pitching.

Kita Luyando Frazier and Jaiden Pierce had the Wolves’ base hits.

Golf Westminster’s Bielly Phasay finished in a tie for ninth place with a score of 90 at the second of two Eastern Metro Athletic Conference all-school tournaments Sept. 14 at Hyland Gills Golf Course.

Jerry Logan took 13th with his 92, and Trystian Martin finished his round with a 146.The Wolves finished fourth in the season standings, based on results from this tournament and a similar tournament in August.

Riverdale Ridge High School Golf FORT MORGAN -- Riverdale Ridge took first place in the team standings at the Sept. 16 Fort Morgan Invitational at Quail Dunes Sept. 16.

Will Balliet fired a 1-under to win the stroke-play portion of the meet.

Aiden Sweeney was third after his 2-over 74. Bradley Weinmaster ended his round with a 77.

Cross country Johanna Pataluna of Riverdale Ridge placed 17th in the girls division of the St. Vrain Cross Country

Invitational at Lyons High School Sept. 17. Her time was 23:09.4.

Savannah Momens was 18th in a time 23:11.5), while Cayley Hansen finished 40th in a time of 24:46.9.

One was against Vista Peak by a score of 20-2 in three innings. All 22 runs came in the third inning.

Aubree Davis, who was the winning pitcher, had two hits and three RBIs.Emma Hodnet added two hits and two RBIs. Neila Lucero had a base hit and drove in two runs. So did Sienna Mullin.Davis struck out seven in her complete-game effort.

Sydnee Fordham had four hits to lead the Ravens to a 14-4, four-inning win against Niwot Sept. 16 in Thornton. Those four hits produced three RBIs.

The 2021 appropriation for the General; Utility Enterprise (Water and Wastewater); Parks, Open Space and Trails and General Capital Improvement Funds initially appropriated
