Slow speed zones enforcement starts June 1

Northglenn will start enforcing the safety sensitive zones on June 1, City Manager Heather Geyer announced to council at the May 22 city council meeting.

“Signage for this program is installed, the tra c unit through the police department will begin enforcement,” she said. City Council unanimously approved the increased fees in these speci c residential zones at the Feb. 13 meeting.

Fines will double. For speeding 5-9 mph, the ne in those zones will go from $60 to $120, for 10-19 mph, $160 to $320, and for over 20 mph, the penalty will go from $250 to $499.

According to the Feb. 13 meeting’s agenda, the total civil penalty for a single tra c o ense or infraction cannot exceed $499. ose nes will not be subject to a plea bargain. e program, initiated by City Councilor Nicholas Walker, was inspired by the City of Parker which adopted the zones to enhance public safety along its roadways. e hope is to change motorist behavior.

According to the city’s website, the zone locations are: Fox Run Parkway from roughly North Park to South Park, Irma Drive from south of Fowler Drive to E. 115th Avenue, Community Center Drive from the SCL Health entrance to the Boondocks parking lot and Melody Drive near Northglenn High School (used by students, existing tra c calming measures through Connect Northglenn)

Geyer said the top three citations that went through the municipal court system in April were speeding 10 -19 miles over the speed limit, careless driving and no insurance.
