National award comes to Sampson, RVHS grad/swimmer

RICHMOND, Va.— Colorado Mesa University’s Ben Sampson is this year’s College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association NCAA Division II Men’s Swimmer of the Year.

Sampson, a redshirt sophomore who graduated from Ralston Valley High School, was one of 21 Mavericks’ swimmers (12 women, nine men) who earned at least one, rst-team all-American honor, according to a statement from CMU. Sampson is the rst Mavericks swimmer to receive the honor.
Sampson led the way for the Mavericks, winning the national title in both the 200-yard individual medley and 200-backstroke. He is the rst male swimmer in CMU history to win a title after Lily Borgenheimer became the rst women’s swimmer to do so last year in the 200-breaststroke.
He had also set the NCAA Division II record of 1:40.73 (1:39.53-altitude adjusted) in November dur- ing the TYR/CMU Invitational.
Swimming and head diving coaches from around the nation voted on the CSCAA’s major awards. First-team, all-American status goes to the top eight nishers in each event. Second-team picks go to the ninth- through 16th-place nishers.
Sampson was also an all-American in all seven of his events, picking up six, rst-team honors after nishing third in the 400- individual medley, fourth in the 100back, fth in the 800-freestyle relay and eighth in the 200-medley relay. He also helped the Mavs to a ninth- place nish in the 400-medley relay and is now a 14-time all-American over the last two seasons. at total is the second highest in program history behind only Mahmoud Elgayar, who received two more all-America honors to complete his brilliant career with 15 total honors. He received at least one in each of his ve seasons. e CMU men placed a programbest fth at the national meet.
Six other swimmers – ve men, one woman .. earned second-team all-Americans. MSU put together 24, top-eight nishes in the two-day national meet.

Baseball
Horizon needed six innings to beat Silver Creek 14-3 in ornton March 14. e game ended early because of the state’s mercy rule. Devon Larson and Liam Paul had base hits and RBIs for the Raptors. Davis Wilkins had two hits, including a triple, and four RBIs for the Hawks. Nick Lay had a home run and drove in four runs.
Girls soccer
Arvada West downed Horizon 5-1 in Arvada March 15. Freshman Elizabeth Leitch scored the Hawks’ goal. Goalkeeper Pauline Saldivar made 10 saves.
Eaglecrest shut out the Hawks 2-0 in ornton March 14. Saldivar made 11 saves.
Girls tennis
Broom eld blanked Horizon 6-0 in Broom eld March 14. No stats were available for either team.
Boys swimming
Fairview stopped Horizon 219-75 in ornton March 15. Bryson Kassatly won 1-meter diving with 121 points.
Samuel Schleicher was second in the 100-yard butter y, where his time was 1:00..34. He also took fourth in the 200freestyle with a time of 1:58.94. Trevor Dobbles took second in the 100- breast stroke with a time of 1:13.35.
Nelson Pitz was fourth in the 200- individual medley with a time of 2;17.26.
Adam Stevenson was sixth in the 100yard backstroke with a time of 1;10.9 and seventh in the 200- individual medley with a time of 2;36.94. Logan Kish was seventh in the 100- backstroke (1:12.64) and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 59.05 seconds.
