Las Cazuelas Mexican restaurant in Lakewood has a 40-year history, Tony Silva said, but he “got tired of being confined to the same four walls.” So he started the Tony Guacamole Food Truck last July. The menus, however, are completely different. With the food truck, he is able to specialize in guacamole, and offers three or four different guacamole selections at any given time. Board again denies charter request Charter school applicants will again appeal decision to state By Tom Munds
tmunds @coloradocommunitymedia.com The Englewood School Board voted unanimously Feb. 4 to again deny the TriCity Academy application to establish a charter school in the district. Meanwhile, the academy said it again will appeal Englewood’s decision to the state board of education. Englewood School Board denied the TriCity application in October, the academy appealed the decision to the state board of education and the state board ordered Englewood to reconsider the application with four conditions. The public meeting about reconsideration of the application was held as part of the Feb. 3 Englewood School Board meeting. “We once again thoroughly reviewed this application just as we have done all along,” said Duane Tucker, school board president. “We did a thorough evaluation of the application the first time and did the same process to reevaluate it. Nothing has happened since the first denial to change our minds. We also feel the Charter School Institute assessment of the proposal as high risk validated our concerns with this application and the denial.” Rick Gillit, TriCity applicant, disagreed with the

There seemed to be no middle ground for negotiations.” Co-applicant Theresa Martins said she also felt the school board did not negotiate. “The district wanted it their way,” she said. “There weren’t negotiations, and that is no way to reach common ground and agreement.” The academy board met Feb. 4; Gillit said the
TriCity board wants to do what is best for school choice, so plans are to pursue appealing Englewood’s decision on the application to the state board of education. The Feb. 3 public hearing on the reconsideration of the application included presentations from the school district and the academy plus a public comment period.
