Orediggers also win seventh-consecutive RMAC All-Sports Cup
BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

After holding the No. 1 spot through the fall and winter sports seasons, Colorado School of Mines ended up taking third place in the 2022-23 LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup standings.
e award ranks overall athletic department performance among NCAA Division II schools, giving points based on how well a team did in its postseason.
Grand Valley State won the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup with 936.75 points. West Texas A&M took second with 904.75 points.
e Orediggers scored a programbest 855 points in 2022-23, and nished third in the standings — the best nish in Mines Athletics history.
e Orediggers have never nished better than sixth place in the standings.
Along with Mines, two other Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools appeared in the top 20. CSUPueblo and Adams State landed at 16th and 19th, respectively.
e Orediggers’ fall sports landed an immediate one-two-three punch in LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup standings. e men’s cross country team won a national title; the football team was national runner-up; and the women’s cross country team nished third.
e volleyball team and both soccer teams also accrued points for their deep runs in their respective NCAA Division II tournaments. Mines was only one of two schools to have all six of its fall teams score points toward the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup.
As a result, Mines amassed 448 points and nished the fall sports season No. 1 in the national standings. It was the fth-consecutive fall where Mines led the standings.
en, in the winter, the Orediggers accrued 315.25 more points and had a rst-ever lead after the winter season.
All Mines’ seven winter teams scored points based on how each did at their respective national championships. e indoor track & eld teams generated 131.25 points alone, followed by the swimming teams, wrestling, and basketball teams. e softball, baseball and men’s golf teams didn’t appear at their national championships.
Finally, in the spring, only Mines’ outdoor track & eld teams generated points toward the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup standings. e women’s and men’s teams nished 11th and 12th respectively at the national meet.
Meanwhile, 2022-23 cup winner Grand Valley State scored 240 points in the fall, 296 in the winter, and 400.75 in the spring.
Technically, 17 Grand Valley State teams generated points, but was limited to points from only 12 teams. So, the Lakers dropped 266.5 scored by women’s soccer, women’s swimming & diving, women’s golf, and men’s and women’s tennis.
While the Orediggers had a nice one-two-three sweep in the fall, the Lakers had nine top ve nishes throughout 2022-23. eir women’s cross country and softball teams were both national runners-up, while their women’s lacrosse and men’s indoor track & eld teams were third in the nation.

Orediggers win seventh-straight RMAC All-Sports Cup is is Mines’ eighth All-Sports Cup overall, as it won its rst in 2011-12. Since then, the Orediggers have nished no lower than third in the standings.
Additionally, Mines Athletics has won its seventh-straight RMAC AllSports Cup, which measures overall excellence among its 15 member institutions’ athletic departments. e Orediggers will accept the trophy during the July 13 RMAC Hall of Fame banquet in Colorado Springs, Mines Athletics con rmed in a June 21 press release.

During the 2022-23 school year, the Orediggers tallied 933 points. e next-closest school was Colorado Mesa, which had 792.5 points.
Athletics Director David Hansburg congratulated all the student-athletes, coaches, sta and administrators for their incredible dedication that’s enabled Mines to win seven years in a row. e only other institution that’s won six or more consecutive All-Sports Cups was former member Nebraska-Kearney, which won 11 from 1995-2005.
“To have this success in the RMAC, one of the best and most competitive NCAA Division II conferences in the nation, makes it even more remarkable,” Hansburg stated in the June 21 press release. “I am so proud of everyone who has been a part of this success!” and checking o bucket list items, like the country’s “highest downhill half marathon,” said Cheryl Talley, director of communications and public relations for the Denverbased Donor Alliance.
Exercise is easier with a healthy heart, but there are still challenges.
For example, when Ogg’s original heart was removed, it was separated from the vagus nerve, the main nerves of a person’s parasympathetic nervous system. For the average person, this nerve system ensures the heart knows to beat faster during exercise to give their lungs more oxygen.
Some hearts reinnervate post surgery, but Ogg’s has not. is makes warming up even more crucial than it is for other runners.
“I just have to go by how I feel,” Ogg said.
For the Slacker, which descends from the base of the Loveland Ski Area more than 2,000 feet in elevation to downtown Georgetown, Ogg planned to begin walking at a brisk pace before beginning to jog.
She nished in just over 3 hours, wearing a sign honoring her heart donor for the course of the race.
According to the Donor Alliance, one donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation, and save and heal more than 75 lives through eye and tissue donation. In Colorado and Wyoming, roughly 1,500 are on the waiting list for an organ transplant.
As Ogg approaches the ve-year anniversary of the transplant that changed her life, she hopes to continue honoring her donor and raising awareness about organ donation.
“People who receive new organs can go on to live extraordinary lives,” she said. “ ere can be a misconception about what life is like for organ recipients.” how it related to other parts of his giant mural. His connection to the natural world and whole-hearted excitement in sharing it with me was testament to just how simple connection can be. His relationships with his classmates came alive. Not only did his anxiety decrease, but anxious responses in the class were also reduced.
