Lakewood mom takes to social media for #Here4thekids movement

BY JO DAVIS JDAVIS@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Lakewood mom Wolf Terry posted a map of her neighborhood, which included 12 gun stores in the vicinity of her house. During the video post, she also pointed out how close one store is to the local elementary school.

Terry used the video on TikTok and Instagram to promote the movement #Here4thekids and the desire to see the ban of guns, especially assault ri es, in the state of Colorado.

Here4thekids is a grassroots movement by mothers to end gun violence in Colorado schools. e group will come together in a “sitin” style protest June 5 to urge Gov. Jared Polis to ban and buy back guns in Colorado. Terry says her video was one of many calls to action that she has made for moms in the area. Her speci c target: white moms.

Here4thekis is led by Black women: Tina Strawn, Saira Rao and Myisha Hill. Strawn released a video where she states, “Our ancestors and the Black leaders of the Civil Rights Movement gave us the blueprint.” She goes on to tell the white women of the movement,

“ is is your Selma.”

According to Terry, Strawn is referring to the March 1965 Civil Rights Movement protest in Selma,

Mississippi.

“Bloody Sunday happened. White women heard about it. ey said Black men andBlack women should not be brutalized for our right to vote. (White women) got on buses. ey went down to Selma. ings changed.”

Terry added that white women of Je erson County are being asked to show up for a speci c reason.

“Because we have the most amount of privilege,” Terry said. “And it’s about time we show up for something.”

She said that privilege will change the way that this anti-gun violence movement is treated.

“Primarily black BIPOC movements are being brutalized rather than being listened to,” Terry said.

#Here4thekids will meet up on May 17 at Evans High School in Denver for sign-making, education and more. is event is a preparation of sorts for the June 3 sit-in protests planned for the Capitol Building. For more information, follow #Here4thekids on social media and the movement’s website for more information. Terry is the sole Lakewood area contact at press time. Spring avalanche danger looms as record-high deaths approach

Conditions across the state are warming, and in the mountains, that means more avalanche hazards. e chance of “wet avalanches” increases when snowpack melts in the springtime. ose types of avalanches occur when layers of snow beneath the surface become unstable due to increased moisture. Colorado’s snowpack is 38 percentage points higher than the median for this time of year, according to the National Water and Climate Center. at means there’s even more potential runo than normal.

Brian Lazar, deputy director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, said the high amount of snow that’s fallen this winter has contributed to the high risk of wet avalanches. e state’s high-elevation areas have received snowfall as recently as the nal week of April.

“As that cold snow warms up and sees sun after the storm leaves, it will

tend to sheet o the underlying crust and produce kind of long-running wet avalanche activity, which is also what we saw over the last couple days,” Lazar said.

Lazar said wet avalanche activity will likely drop o once higher temperatures become more consistent and snowpack melts, but there will still be plenty of risk for backcountry skiers and other outdoor recreators in the coming weeks. He said anyone going out into the snow should be extra careful.

“Outside of checking your forecast, you want to make sure you’re still carrying your minimum required rescue gear, which includes an avalanche transceiver, a shovel, and a probe,” Lazar said.

A man died near Breckinridge over the weekend after he was caught in a slide, becoming Colorado’s 11th avalanche fatality this snow season. One more recreational fatality will tie the state’s all-time record, set in 1993. is story via Colorado Public Radio, a Colorado Community Media content partner.
