Arvada City Council sworn in, Simpson takes mayor’s seat Outgoing Mayor Marc Williams shares his ten guiding rules for public service

Arvada’s new city council was sworn in on Nov. 13, with newly elected Mayor Lauren Simpson taking her seat at the center of the dais and new councilmembers Sharon Davis and Shawna Ambrose also sworn in.

Councilmember Bob Fifer — who was formerly an at-large representative — was sworn into his new District 4 seat, and Councilmember

Randy Moorman was unanimously elected Mayor Pro Tem after being the only councilmember to be nominated.

Council chambers were packed to the gills as Municipal Judge Katheryn Kurtz led the councilmembers through their oaths of office while each was accompanied by family and friends.

Outgoing Councilmember David Jones and longtime Mayor Marc Williams gave their final remarks from the dais and were honored with recognitions from the city for their public service.

In his closing statements, Williams — who has spent 12 years as Arvada’s Mayor, preceded by 12 years as a councilmember — offered his ten recommendations for those working in public service.

So Radish closes, to be replaced by Secret Level arcade Vegan restaurant shudders due to financial losses

A vegan staple of Olde Town Arvada closed its doors for the last time on Nov. 19 following mounting financial losses, owner Scott Spears said.

The restaurant will be replaced

by Secret Level arcade — which has operated out of So Radish’s back room for years. Secret Level will expand to fill the whole retail space, which will retain the former restaurant’s bar and will serve a limited food menu.

Secret Level will open in late November, Spears said.

Spears added that So Radish had been losing money from the beginning, and it became time to transition the space.

“We just been losing money since we opened,” Spears said.

“We have tried everything, and it just never made money. It takes a lot of people to make the food we’re making there. Everything was made from scratch, and we had a pretty big menu, and it was all vegan since COVID.” Spears said the staff from So Radish will be able to keep their positions at Secret Level or work at his other Olde Town eatery, School House Kitchen and Libations.

Secret Level’s limited food menu will include ‘chicken chunks’ — boneless chicken nuggets — waffle fries, fried pickles and fried avocados.

Spears added that the community feedback from patrons has been overwhelmingly positive — especially from the local vegan community, which often touted the specialized restaurant.

“We’re getting amazing messages from people, like really heartfelt ones,” Spears said. “I’ve had some people pull me aside and they’re obviously upset, but they’re very appreciative and they love everything. And we get it, we love the atmosphere there, we love the family, we love everything about it.”

PacMan, Pong and a wide selection of pinball terminals. Booths will be removed; tables will be moved to the center and games will run alongside the walls.

Spears said he hopes the arcade can become a family-friendly destination for lots of different kinds of patrons in Olde Town.

“At the arcade back there, non-

vegan pinball heads came in to play,” Spears said. “So, hopefully, we’ll expand on that and just get other families and just people down there that were scared off by the vegan thing. And you don’t have to think about what you’re getting — the fried chicken chunks that are absolutely amazing. A handful of sauces, it’s just easy.”

Spears also mentioned that Super Zoom Bang Bang — the toy shop in Olde Town he also owns — will expand into the retail space next door to its current location, which was previously occupied by the Olde Town Flower shop. The expanded space will feature an arcade as well, but this one will be more geared towards children and young adults.

Super Zoom Bang Bang’s arcade is also expected to open in November, and Spears said that while currently, the arcades will use quarters for gaming access, a card system that could be shared across the two arcades might be implemented in the future.

The resounding message that I think we heard is that people want our schools to be successful,” Applegate said.

Arvada made a bit of history on Election Day, as voters selected Lauren Simpson as the city’s first new mayor in 12 years — and the first elected female mayor in Arvada’s history.

Ahead of her swearing-in on Nov. 13, Simpson spoke with the Arvada Press about her goals for the next four years, where she sees Arvada fitting in with the Denver Metro area, and how she plans to lead city council. Answers have been shortened for clarity.

Arvada Press: How are you feeling in the wake of Election Day results?

Lauren Simpson: I am just tremendously excited, to be honest. I have worked so incredibly hard for my constituents in the city and the council these past several years.

To have that work recognized and have the voters believe in me, and trust me to put me in this office, means more than I can possibly say. And I know it’s going to be a lot, but I’m so ready for it, I’m excited to do it and I just want to deliver results for Arvadans.

AP: What are your biggest takeaways from the campaign trail?

LS: The first takeaway is clearly the voters thought that they had an excellent choice between two qualified candidates. That had been my sense when I entered the race, was that we were going to have an excellent race and an excellent choice for Arvadans.

So, it’ll be my job to represent all our values and to make sure that that other half of the city (that voted for John Marriott) sees that I am working for them as well. And that is exactly the type of mayor I want to be.

The second takeaway from this election is that really, truly hard work pays off. I have been hitting the doors and focusing on this campaign relentlessly for months. And I’m so pleased that we were able to reach the voters and inspire people and get them to the polls and deliver this result.

AP: Switching from District 2 to a citywide office, what are some issues you’ve been made aware of outside

your old district?

LS: One that really stands out in my mind is transportation on the northwest side. It’s no secret Indiana (Street) is an issue. We’ve heard about this forever. And that is something that I was already aware of.

But what I wasn’t really aware of is the difficulties of navigating even just small sections of it. For instance, I had parents in Five Parks tell me it takes 30 kids or teenagers an hour to get to Ralston Valley High School. There should be an eight-minute drive at most.

And then there are kids who walk who hopped the railroad tracks, and as a parent that makes my gut twist because I’m envisioning a teenager getting their foot caught and injured. We need to do better in terms of safety in terms of transportation.

I would love to see us tackle Indiana, I would love to see us implement sidewalks and bike lanes.

AP: As mayor, what will be your approach to making partnerships with other civic leaders and organizations throughout the metro area?

LS: I’m really excited to get started on this. Obviously, we have Metro mayor’s

caucus. The Jefferson County mayors have an informal group where they get together. I’m really looking forward to getting started and building those relationships.

Obviously, Mark Williams has been such a dominant force in Jefferson County politics for so long that it’s going to be a very different dynamic. And that’s certainly not lost on me. But I’m also very lucky that Lakewood has a new mayor as well, and we are the two largest cities in Jefferson County.

Harvard University does a three-day seminar for newly elected mayors from around the country, paid for by Harvard and Bloomberg Philanthropy, so it’s not going to cost the taxpayers a dime.

And (Lakewood Mayor) Wendy (Strom) and I discussed it, and we’ve decided that we’re both going to go and participate in this program together to both work on how we’re going to develop our leadership styles, how we can be cooperative, and strategies that have worked along with mayors from all over the new mayors from all over the country.

and they can do it in a way that bodes good results and is respectful and feels good at the end of the day,” added Applegate.

Applegate said that she and Kenworthy want people to see themselves in the district’s leadership.

“Come have a conversation with us,” she said. “We aren’t always going to agree, but it can be done in a respectful manner where we can walk away and feel good about the effort and the conversation.”

Kenworthy agreed.

“I really hope that we can get to a tone and a tenor on the school board and at those meetings, where we’re all on the same team trying to support our schools and our students so they can be the best that they can be. And that doesn’t have to be divisive,” Kenworthy said.

Kenworthy said she was especially impressed by the insightful and direct questions Jeffco students asked during the student-led forum and that she’s excited to continue those conversations. She believes student input is essential for developing the types of programs that will lead them to successful futures.

Kenworthy’s most memorable campaign moment is what she calls “parenting while campaigning.”

they met a woman who’d just returned from Ukraine, where she’d been doing humanitarian work.

“At first, she was annoyed that we knocked on her door, but after she read our flyer, she came back out and told me how grateful she was that we were running for the school board and that I was taking my kids with me to show them that it’s important to be involved in local politics,” she said.

What it comes down to, they both said, is that they’re real people with feelings and hopes and dreams and disappointments like everyone else.

“Sometimes we expect elected officials to be superhuman and have everything figured out,” Kenworthy said. “And I just wanted to say that I have piles of laundry in my house, and I share a bathroom with my children. I go to therapy. I like to roller skate.”

Applegate added, “I’m the one that’s going to be hair-on-fire chasing a wild-eyed three-year-old who is precocious and terrorizing and the most fun and amazing little human there is while watching a high school lacrosse game and trying to help my eight-year-old with his chess. But we do this because we’re passionate about it, and we love it.”

Applegate and Kenworthy are both excited to dive into the business of running a district, especially one the size of Jefferson County.

With 69,000 students across 155 schools, the district is Colorado’s second largest.

“I’m looking forward to getting up to speed on where the organization is and understanding superintendent Tracy Dorlan’s priorities, the cabinet’s goals, and how we can support them in their roles,” Applegate said.

Kenworthy agreed and said she’s excited to visit schools and meet with principals, staff, and families across a broader section of the district than she’s currently familiar with.

“I’m also looking forward to meeting the folks working at the district level and understanding the lay of the land when it comes to our personnel and getting to know who we’ll be working with when it comes to different policy issues that we’ll have to discuss,” Kenworthy said.

Both are impressed with the current board’s High School Reimagined and Family Response Service Teams (FRST) initiatives. The High School Reimagined initiative is a year-long community feedback process that will gather input from high schoolers, educators, business owners, and families to decide how to best prepare high school students for life after graduation.

“I love the high school reimagined idea that they’re working on right now. High school looks very similar to when I was in high school, which has been a while. And so I’m excited to see the research that comes out of that,” said Applegate.

FRST provides families with a single point of contact in the district who can help them resolve their concerns and needs should they need help connecting to the district’s resources.

Kenworthy said she loves the idea of providing a case manager to help families navigate issues. “Instead of calling your school and getting a principal and the school secretary involved, and then they’re calling the articulation area superintendent, and so on, now the idea is you have somebody who takes your call and then helps you navigate through it and find answers. I think this service can potentially increase family engagement and support.”

Jeffco Sheriff’s Office works to regrow mounted patrol unit

Jefferson County deputies recently participated in mounted patrol training hosted by El Paso County Sheriff ’s Office at the Latigo Trails Equestrian Center in El Paso County.

Jeffco Sgt. Janie Enriquez said the training is designed for the horses and the riders.

“It is something that is done when either you get a new horse or rider to the unit,” she said. Enriquez described the training as a certification course for officers who are new to the mounted patrol unit.

According to Enriquez, Jefferson County has six horses and riders on its mounted patrol, and the department would love to add more to help regrow the force.

“This is just the beginning of relaunching the Mounted Patrol Unit,” Enriquez said. “It had died down and faded over the last couple of years. Riders retired. Their horses got older. Family circumstances happened.”

She explained that the training is

needed to ensure that both horse and rider are prepared not only for duty but also to be in public.

“We’re putting them into the public,” Enriquez said. “We must know that they can meet a certain standard for safety.”

The training is rigorous to ensure those standards are met.

“It’s a 40-hour training, and everything is taught from the ground to the saddle,” Enriquez said. She said training also included basic horse care, bonding, calming techniques and some lessons on the mental health of the horse.

“They start off with horse theory in psychology,” Enriquez said. “So you can understand horse behavior, or why these animals act the way they do, based on nature.”

She went on to describe calming techniques as key for duty.

“You run into a lot of interesting things, especially at festivals and fairs and community events,” Enriquez said. “So learning about a horse’s psychology and how to calm them is kind of where it starts.”

AP: Do you anticipate any growing pains with a fairly inexperienced city council?

LS: I don’t really expect growing pains, it really is just that we have a very new council and finding our rhythm will be really crucial. When I joined the Council, I was the only new member and everybody else was quite senior at that point. So, I was very lucky that I had a highly experienced council that I could observe, and I got up to speed fairly quickly.

But there’s also a lot of opportunity I see because now there’s that new lens that refreshing lens, I think is really important. And one of the big takeaways from this election is I think Arvada was ready for that, to be honest, that was something I heard from countless constituents is that they were ready for something new that it was time for something new.

That’s no sleight to anyone else.

It’s just you have to constantly be looking for new ways, new improvements changing with the times. And I think we are simply in a period of change in Arvada. And our council reflects that period of change.

AP: What do you believe the city’s relationship with Mission Arvada — the homeless ministry that operates out of The Rising Church in Olde Town — should look like going forward?

LS: Mission Arvada is protected by the First Amendment; we can’t force anything. I want to work with them as partners in a way that makes sure that they can continue to do their important work and that they feel included.

And it’s time for a fresh start with a lot of our community partners.

And I just look forward to being able to go in and have a fresh start with a lot of people. Sometimes when you don’t have the relationship history weighing you down, it gives you the opportunity to hear somebody.

AP: What is your vision for Arvada four years from now?

LS: You know, Arvada four years from now will look a lot like Arvada today, some of these big development projects that we are seeing them put up right now will obvi-

ously be finished, and there will be people there.

And so, four years from now, I would like to see us have really dynamic, amazing community spaces, I would like to see us have improved accessibility around the city, and improve transportation solutions on the northwest side, or at least making really good headway on it.

We love Olde Town; Olde Town is the heart of our city. But every other part of the city matters as well, absolutely. And so just being able to bring that sense of community and gathering space, just across the board.

It’s a long-term vision, but it’s something that we can start to make progress on all over.

AP: How do you see Arvada fitting into the broader Denver metro area?

LS: We’re the coolest suburb, and we’re going to stay that way! Arvada really is special; Arvada does have a unique identity. Marc Williams always calls it Mayberry as a city, I have always identified it as

the charm and feel of a small town with all the amenities of the major metro area.

We do have a very unique identity, we have a history, we have a tradition and a charm. And everything we do needs to be informed by that.

When we look at solutions, we need to say, ‘Is this going to disrupt the character of our surrounding community?’ And if the answer is yes, then maybe we shouldn’t do it.

AP: What does it mean to you to be the first elected woman mayor in Arvada’s history? (Simpson is the third female mayor overall in Arvada. The city used to appoint mayors, and the other two were appointed).

LS: It means a lot — a lot of the data shows that, subconsciously, the public still looks more favorably upon men for executive roles than they do women. And so that was something I was keenly aware of when I ran for this office.

Knowing that I was able to reach the voters, that I was able to earn their trust that I had enough experience, enough judgment, enough

character to hold this office. That means a tremendous amount to me.

For youth in particular, I have had people say to me, it matters to them, matters to their daughters.

I’m hearing it a lot from voters about their teenage daughters, how much it means that they see a strong woman as the mayor. And that it means and that it means just as much that their sons see that as well.

AP: What is your overall outlook for the next four years?

LS: I am really looking forward to getting started. It’s going to be a really good four years.

I am so pleased with the city that I’m inheriting, and Arvada is in really good shape. Our residents should know that. We have a healthy Council. We have a wonderful city team. We do not face many of the dysfunctional issues that some of our neighboring cities do face. I plan to protect that and grow it.

Thanksgiving races to build your appetite

In Jefferson County, organizers want to make a 5K as common for Thanksgiving as the turkey centerpiece.

Arvada: Too Much Turkey 5K Part of the Colorado Brewery Running Series, the 10 a.m. Nov. 25 “Too Much Turkey 5K” starts and ends at the Colorado Tap House in Arvada. The event is for runners, walkers, bikers and more. The run is only part of the event which also features food trucks, vendors, giveaways and more at the end of the run.

The proceeds from the run will go to local nonprofits, but the primary goal is fun.

Littleton: Gobble Wobble 5K Run The Gobble Wobble 5K Run takes place in Littleton on Thanksgiving morning.

The race begins at 8:30 a.m.

Nov. 23 at Clement Park in Littleton. The 13-year-old race has become a Thanksgiving staple. According to the race webpage, the first year saw 750 participants.

Today it has grown so to require a 1,500 participant cap.

Registration for this year’s Gobble Wobble 5K is sold out.

The proceeds from the race will support Freedom Service Dogs of America.

According to Enriquez, the horsemanship portion of the training comes before the law enforcement training.

That includes search and rescue techniques and coming in contact with vehicles, pedestrians and other situations.

“Being on a horse in and of itself can be a little bit intimidating,” Enriquez said. “So you just want to make sure you’re using the proper techniques based on the situation.”

The training required practice and testing for all of the law enforcement techniques.

“We did evidence searching in open fields and properties,” Enriquez said. “We kind of have a bird’s eye view from up there where you can see evidence that

Part of the training included what to do when kids want to come pet the horses.

“I would say the majority of mana patrol is like community events and public relations,” explained Enriquez. “People love animals. And it’s great for kids to be able to come up and meet the horses and ask questions and interact with officers while they’re with this awesome animal.”

Enriquez said that officers welcome kids’ curiosity about the horses. However, there is a safe way to engage with the animal.

“The best thing to do is just say hi to the deputy and approach the horse from the front where the horse can see you,” she explained.

Colorado Parks and Recreation Association awards Wheat Ridge local Kathleen Martell wears many hats in the Wheat Ridge community. Now she can add the “awardwinning” label to her name as well.

Martell recently received the Community Service Award from the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association for her many contributions to the Wheat Ridge community.

Martell currently serves as chair of the Wheat Ridge Cultural Commission and maintains several active roles in the community. She works with the art drop program, Performances in the Park, and with public art selection. Martell also serves on the Land Acknowledgement Committee, with Regenerate Wheat Ridge, and is on the leadership team for the Sustainable Neighborhoods program at Panoramic Park.

“Kathleen’s passion, hard work, and unwavering commitment make her an invaluable asset to every team she joins in the Wheat Ridge community,” said the Wheat Ridge Parks and Recreation’s announcement.

VOICES The meaning of life

I

enjoy watching “Valley of the Dolls,” a movie based on the novel by Jaqueline Susann. The flick, in my estimation, is a bit campy, but I find the storyline and B-grade acting captivating. One scene in particular in which Neely O’Hara (Patty Duke) and Helen Lawson (Susan Hayward) get into a tussle in a ladies restroom room has stayed with me. After yanking off Helen’s wig, Neely tries to flush it down a commode. Helen is understandably enraged. Her now-visible chopped gray hair is most unbecoming. The attendant informs her that she can sneak out a back door, but Helen will have none of that.

She looks into the mirror, pulls her wrap around her shoulders, and declares, “I’ll go out the same way I came in.”

Helen is not an admirable character. She has a high opinion — perhaps rightly — of her talents. She is self-confident and self-assured but also arrogant and demanding, often treating others condescendingly. Helen, though, operates under no illusions. She has a hard-nosed understanding about the demands of the theater and understands that glory and fame are fleeting. Still, she’s not devoid of empathy. She sees Neely for what she is: a talented, up-and-coming performer,

albeit one who lacks the steely, inner toughness necessary to make it big. Nonetheless, she sees Neely as a threat to her stardom. In the avian universe, Helen is an osprey not about to let a titmouse like Columnist Neely upstage and shame her. Shorn of her wig, Helen is, nevertheless, not stripped of her dignity. She holds her head up confidently as she strides out to her waiting fans.

The root of dignity is dignitas, the Latin word meaning one’s worthiness in the context of their esteem and bearing and of their reputational prestige and merit. Dignity is generally considered an admirable trait. But maintaining one’s dignity is oftentimes not an easy thing to do. It can require, as the Brits are fond to say, keeping a stiff upper lip. But behind that stiff lip, a sea of fears, anxieties and frustrations could be roiling.

The great Russian writer, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, is purported to have said, “There is only one thing that I dread: not to be worthy of my suffering.”

In Dostoyevsky parlance that means the manner in which one bears their suffering is a matter of personal dignity. Thus, when confronted with a challenging situation or times, we each face a choice.

One response is to bemoan your plight by projecting a self-pitying, I’m-a-victim demeanor. Another is to hold your head up and carry on in a dignified way.

In “Man’s Search for Meaning,” Viktor Frankl, writing in reference to the inordinate suffering and dehumanization prisoners in the concentration camps endured, said that to survive, the prisoners, even though they were shorn of nearly every element of personal dignity, still had to choose. He averred that they needed to stop trying to figure out the meaning of life — thus the reason for their suffering — and instead to think of themselves as being challenged by life every minute of every day. He asserted it was not through talk or meditation — and presumably prayer — that they would find answers but in right action and conduct.

Frankl’s prescription echoes two directives in Buddhism’s Eightfold Path — Right Speech and Right Action — and has meaning for everyone. For me that means how one responds to crises is the true

measure of a person. A person with nobility doesn’t whine but instead faces them with class: with dignitas.

Each of us is an algorithm of our life experiences combined with our natural talents, skills, traits, and choices made, healthy as well as poor ones. That complex matrix is the sum of our individual humanness.

Frankl cited a line from an unnamed poet who wrote, “What you have experienced, no power on earth can take from you.” Anyone who has endured a difficult situation that could have dragged them to the bottom but didn’t, because they conducted themselves resolutely with personal courage, gets that. They know how it feels to emerge from an ordeal all the stronger in character.

The most we can ask for is to depart from this plane with dignity and be remembered as having lived as decorous life as possible by having done our best despite our voluminous warts, flaws, and other unseemly aspects. For in the end, that’s the meaning of life.

“I immediately thought, ‘Terumo BCT can do this,” recalls Robin Korkus Vice President of Enterprise Strategy at Terumo BCT. “The Action Center has construction in its warehouse with the conveyor belt where the Thanksgiving boxes have traditionally been assembled. They didn’t have a place to stage 1,400 food boxes.”

Terumo BCT’s team stepped up, providing warehouse space to store food temporarily. The business also signed up several employees to work in shifts to help.

The 2023 Action Center Thanksgiving grocery box distribution will take place on Nov. 18 on the Terumo BCT campus.

Terumo’s employees will work with Action Center volunteers to make the distribution happen.

According to the announcement, the Action Center distributes about 5,700 meal boxes every year. The boxes are like meal kits “designed to help offset the costs of

Thanksgiving dinner.”

The boxes are only available by appointment. However, appointments are closed for this year.

Smaller preschool class sizes planned

Colorado officials want to cap preschool class sizes in the state’s new universal preschool program at 20 students next year and require at least one staff member for every 10 children in the room.

These proposed limits represent a notable change from an earlier plan that allowed classes sizes of 24 preschoolers and staff-student ratios of 1 to 12. Both are higher than what leading early childhood groups recommend.

National experts panned the earlier draft of Colorado’s universal preschool quality rules, saying that the state’s proposal set a low bar and could lead to bad outcomes for kids. The new draft rules are set to be finalized next spring and will take effect in the fall of 2024. A state advisory committee will weigh in, but Lisa Roy, executive director of the Colorado Department of Early Childhood, will make the final decision.

The new draft rules reflect the balance state officials are trying to strike between ensuring the high-quality program they promised and making the requirements attainable to a wide range of providers in a low-wage, highturnover field. Universal preschool is available in lots of settings: school district classrooms, private child care centers, faithbased preschools, and licensed home-based programs.

State officials launched the $322 million universal preschool program in August without establishing rules on quality in part because they ran out of time. State preschool leaders told providers last spring to “keep doing what you’re doing.” That means wide variations in quality this year for the more than 48,000 children getting tuition-free preschool through the program.

Some children attend preschools with top scores on the state’s child care and preschool rating system, Colorado Shines, while others attend low-rated

programs. Research shows that high-quality preschool produces positive short- and long-term outcomes for children.

Colorado’s rules on preschool quality, which will spell out requirements around curriculum, staff training, and child health screenings, will eventually bring more consistency to the universal preschool program, but it could take till 2026 or after to fully phase in all the requirements.

Aside from the lower class sizes and staff-student ratios, the new draft is largely similar to the first one. As in the original, it generally requires providers to use a curriculum from a resource bank approved by the state. In addition, preschool providers would be subject to on-site evaluations every three years. It also specifically states that faith-based preschools can’t include religious instruction in hours funded by universal preschool — a rule that is not in place this year, according to a spokesman for the Colorado Department of Early Childhood.

Training requirements for preschool staff are a bit different in the new draft, with employees only required to have completed four hours of training on some topics next year, down from eight in the previous draft rules. The new draft institutes the 8-hour training requirement in either 2025 or 2026 — either the third or fourth year of the program — depending on the training topic.

The new draft also delays requirements for providers to offer or coordinate health and developmental screenings for preschoolers until the 2025-26 school year.

The new draft rules don’t address preschool teacher qualifications. A separate set of rules that will take effect in the fall of 2025 will set those requirements.

The state is collecting feedback on the latest draft of the universal preschool quality rules through at least Nov. 22.

Wreaths Across America offers a way to thank veterans for their service after they’re gone

n December, Arvada resident Judy Teter will make the trip to the southwest end of Denver, where she ensures that wreaths will be laid to honor the service of thousands of veterans at a military cemetery.

“It’s not just about laying the wreath — it’s about honoring our veterans and what they did for us,” Teter said. “There’s a proper way to lay the wreath on the headstone, and you’re also supposed to say the veteran’s name and thank them for their service.

“Because a lot of the people that are buried out there don’t have family that comes out and visits them, so we’re honoring them,” Teter continued.

Nearly 100 cemetery locations in Colorado will take part in a national event that pays respect to interred veterans with balsam wreaths. Volunteers like Teter across the state work to support national nonprofit Wreaths Across America ahead of National Wreaths Across America Day, occurring this year on Dec. 16, according to a news release.

Teter volunteers as a coordinator for the effort to place thousands of wreaths at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, near U.S. Highway 285 and Sheridan Boulevard.

Roughly 123,000 veteran graves lie at Fort Logan, according to Wreaths Across America’s website. Teter says her team’s goal is to place 20,000 wreaths there on the day of the ceremony.

She works “with the cemetery administration as to what sections they want covered because we do not have enough wreaths that are sponsored to cover the whole cemetery,” Teter said.

“But I have a goal to hopefully one day get all of Fort Logan covered,” Teter said.

A few years ago, she found out about volunteering to place flags near headstones on Memorial Day. Through that effort, she also heard about putting out the wreaths near Christmastime, and she jumped aboard.

“We wouldn’t be the United States of America with the freedoms that we have if it wasn’t for our servicemen and women,” Teter said.

Supporting other families in remembering their loved ones who served is part of her team’s role.

On the day of the wreath ceremony, a part of the schedule is set aside for family members who ordered a wreath for their loved one’s specific grave.

“That starts at 1 p.m., so it’s a little more quiet for the families to remember, talk to their family member, whatever traditions they have,” Teter said. “Last year, there was a family who had a picnic lunch at their family member’s headstone.”

Looking for help

Teter and her volunteer team work hard behind the scenes to make sure Wreaths Across America Day is a success at Fort Logan.

But she’s looking for more volunteers and trying to drum up more fundraising support to pay for more wreaths and help cover the costs of the operation.

She’s seeking support from businesses who may want to pitch in, too.

“From what I understand, that has been a challenge for a lot of the coordinators, is trying to get companies that can donate X amount of (money) to sponsor X amount of wreaths,” Teter said.

She’s also looking for a volunteer with fundraising experience in particular.

“Or somebody who says, ‘Hey, I know how to (work) a forklift,’ or somebody who says, ‘I own a business or (I can provide) a forklift or pallet jack,’” Teter said.

Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so donating to it is considered tax deductible, according to Teter.

Wreaths Across America was founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia that began in 1992, according to a news release.

The organization’s mission is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington and thousands of veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond, the release said.

Local sponsorship groups registered through the national program are helping to raise the necessary sponsorships to honor service members laid to rest in participating locations.

Since its founding in 2007, Wreaths Across America has partnered with thousands of local nonprofits and civic groups, according to the release.

For those looking to donate, the nonprofit seeks $17 per wreath, Teter said.

But the money goes a long way.

Through the nonprofit’s “PayBack” program, sponsorship groups can earn $5 for every $17 veteran’s wreath sponsored to sup-

port these programs in their communities.

By making a $17 sponsorship, “you are also contributing to vital programs that make a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans and their families throughout the year,” the news release stated.

Some of the nonprofit’s free, year-round programs, according to the release, include: • The Mobile Education Exhibit that travels the country, visiting schools and communities, teaching “the value of our freedom” while acting as an official welcome home center for living Vietnam veterans.

• Wreaths Across America Radio, which gives voice to volunteers and service members so that you can hear their stories “of courage and inspiration.”

• The Wreaths Across America National Museum, which is free and open to the public. It “highlights the bravery and service of rank-and-file veterans.”

• The Remembrance Tree Program, which creates a living memorial of service members giving back to other service members.

If your loved one is buried at a cemetery that doesn’t have a Wreaths Across America ceremony but you still want to order a wreath, you can have it sent to you or a family member, according to Teter.

Or you can pick it up at Fort Logan at 1 p.m. Dec. 16, she said.

“For people who are out of state who order them, we have a volunteer who will place them and send a picture (of the placement) to the family member,” Teter said.

The average hamburger in Colorado now costs $15

Over at a Denver-area Red Robin restaurant, the Keep It Simple burger costs $13.49, or nearly $15 with tax.

That’s up 31% in a little more than three years, based on old menus posted at restaurant review site, Yelp.com, showing the same nofrills burger at $10.29 in May 2020.

It’s not just Red Robin. A lot of burger joints are getting unwanted attention because of their higher prices, with some consumers sharing their shock on social media. It’s

also not just burgers. The cost of eating out at a restaurant in Colorado has increased 28.2% since January 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index. Menu prices have gone up at most Colorado eateries, and restaurant owners don’t really like to talk about it.

But one can still find a solid burger at a full-service restaurant for under $15. The Cricket Burger at The Cherry Cricket in Denver is $11.50, up 30% since 2021, the restaurant confirmed. Fries are still $4 but now there are two sizes: a half order and full size, which is $6.

“Continuing to provide a delicious product to our guests at a value is paramount to us at the Cherry Cricket. We’re always very hesitant to increase our prices,” Calley McCue, president and chief financial officer for Cherry Cricket’s parent company, Breckenridge-Wynkoop, said in an email. “That said, the dramatic increase in (the cost of goods sold) and labor costs that we’ve seen over the past two years have, unfortunately, necessitated increased prices in order for us to keep operating.”

The Colorado Restaurant Association & Foundation gets a lot more specific. Earlier this year, the industry group, which has 4,900 member restaurants, put together its own guide to why the price of an average burger has increased to $15.

Restaurants have seen an increase of 54% in the cost of labor, 55% for utilities and 20% for equipment and maintenance. The price of beef? Up 43%. Cheese? Up 79%.

And lettuce? Up 85%.

For restaurants to make the same margin on burgers that they did in 2020, they’d have to charge $22.

“Inflation has had a huge impact on menu prices across Colorado, as has the annual increase of

the minimum wage,” said Denise Mickelsen, a spokeswoman for the industry association. “The cost of running a restaurant continues to skyrocket, and with typical industry profit margins sitting at a slim 3% to 5%, operators don’t have a lot of wiggle room when food, alcohol, energy, labor, taxes and more continue to climb. It all leads to higher menu prices, streamlined menu offerings, limited hours of operation and operator burnout.”

In October, the restaurant association polled its members about prices. Based on the responses, customers can expect prices to continue to increase next year.

About 86% of members who responded said they planned to increase menu prices when the minimum wage goes up 5.6% to $14.42 an hour on Jan. 1. Six out of 10 said they’ll have to cut hours or shifts for their teams.

Metro area teams, athletes take the podium at CHSAA’s Winter Sports Media Day

The annual Winter Sports Media Day at Ball Arena from the Colorado High School Activities Association means fan favorites like basketball, wrestling, hockey, swimming and diving and skiing are right around the corner.

Student athletes, coaches and teams from every region of Colorado Community Media were in the building on Nov. 13, and all were more than ready to get their respective seasons underway.

Here is a breakdown of the events at Media Day by sport.

Girls basketball

Of the nearly dozen girls basketball teams to address the media, three were in (or on the fringes of ) Colorado Community Media’s coverage area.

Holy Family Tigers The reigning 4A state champions from just north of CCM’s dominant coverage area were back in Denver to begin their quest for back-toback state titles.

The Tigers finished 25-3 last year, defeating runner-up D’Evelyn in the state championship 49-44 to claim their first title since 2014. It is the seventh state title victory in the Broomfield school’s girls basketball history.

“When you come to practice you have to be excellent. When you come to games you have to be excellent,” Head coach Ron Rossi said on their mindset going into this season. “We’re going to take it one at a time knowing that everyone is going to bring their A-game to us. So we have to bring our A-plus game.”

D’Evelyn Jaguars The 4A state runner-ups had to wait their turn behind the champions to speak to the media, but the Jaguars are more focused than ever on getting back to the state title game and getting the job done.

2022, the near Lakewood-based Jaguars ran the 5A/4A Jeffco League last season with a perfect 11-0 record.

Head Coach Chris Olson returns his two leading scorers: Peyton Marvel and Macy Scheer. Marvel averaged a double-double last year with 19.5 points and 12.8 rebounds per game.

She has averaged a double-double each of her first three seasons at D’Evelyn.

“I think there is more pressure,” Scheer said of the upcoming season.

“You know it’s going to be harder.

We lost some good seniors and we know we’re going to have to work just as hard, if not harder. But we’ve been working in the offseason and I think we’re ready to compete. We’re excited.”

Grandview Wolves On the cusp of Centennial and Aurora is Grandview High School.

The Wolves, back-to-back Class 6A champions, rode a bumpy season to the state title last year.

Grandview finished 19-9 and 4-3

in the 6A Centennial League behind Cherry Creek (7-0), Arapahoe (52) and Cherokee Trail (5-2). Head Coach Josh Ulitzky said he’s been fortunate to have extremely talented players in recent years and hopes to ride the Wolves’ championship and momentum again.

“It helps when you have the Gatorade Player of the Year (in Sienna Betts) on your team, who is arguably the best player in the state,” he said.

“It took some time, but the kids really took on their roles. Everybody did their job (last season) so that made it a lot of fun.”

Betts, a junior, recently committed to play for UCLA following her high school career. But fortunately for Grandview, they have her for two more seasons.

Boys basketball

Three private-school basketball powerhouses in the CCM coverage area made an appearance on Media Day also.

Holy Family Tigers Similar to their girls team counterparts, the Holy Family Tigers won the boys 4A state championship last season, winning for the first time since both the boys and girls teams won in 2014 in a rare double-championship year for one school.

But in a 17-11 year, many wouldn’t have picked Holy Family to win last year. The No. 17-seeded Tigers knocked off No. 2-seeded Resurrection Christian in the final to become the first-ever No. 17 seed to win the state championship in Colorado.

The Tigers lost five core seniors, but Head Coach Peter Vellico said he’s confident in his group’s ability to beat anybody.

Belleview Christian Bruins In Westminster lies a small school with a big basketball reputation. The Belleview Christian Bruins were the No. 1 seed headed into last year’s Class 1A state championship. Ultimately, the Bruins couldn’t repeat and finished as runner-ups, losing to No. 2 Denver Jewish Day in the final game 55-42.

Belleview Christian finished 24-2 and 7-0 in the 1A 5280 League last season. After losing some key seniors, Assistant Coach Billy Rush said the identity doesn’t change at all.

“Our identity doesn’t change. We still go out and take pride in playing defense and getting stops,” Rush said.

“That’s what’s gotten us to where we were in 2021 when we won a championship and then even last year. We have a lot of new faces, but we have the same mindset.”

Forge Christian Fury (formerly Faith Christian) Forge Christian Academy (more commonly known as Faith Christian until a recent name and ownership change) had a nearly picture-perfect season last year. The Fury captured the school’s seventh state championship and first since 2012, beating Salida High School 54-47 at the University of Denver.

The Arvada-based team went nearly undefeated, posting a 25-1 overall record. The Fury’s sole loss came to 4A/3A Metro League rival Eagle Ridge Academy, but they still won their league at 8-1. Abram Ziemer was a Faith Christian grad before becoming the team’s head coach, and though he wasn’t able to win a title as a player, he was thrilled to finish the job as a coach.

He spoke on how difficult it will be to replace some championship seniors.

“Replacing a senior is obviously never easy,” he said. “While at the same time, the culture of our program that’s been established even before my time still remains. Any coach will tell you when you have a returning starting point guard, it’s a huge piece for us in Peyton Miller. The guys sitting here are excited about the opportunity.”

Swimming and diving

Two different student athletes from opposite sides of the region in swimming and diving spoke to the media on Nov. 13.

Charlotte Wilson - Cherry Creek Bruins Cherry Creek clinched its third straight 5A state championship in swimming and diving last season after posting an overall score of 448. That’s now 29 state championships for the school in Greenwood Village, which is the most in the state by any school.

As previously reported by CHSAA, Cherry Creek’s 200 freestyle relay team – Alexis Greenhawt, Lawson Ficken, Ana Loveridge and Charlotte Wilson – swam a time of 1 minute, 30.81 seconds. That time broke the Colorado state record that was previously set at 1:33.00 by Cherry Creek in 2022. That time was just 11 hundredth of a second slower than the national record.

Wilson is back with the team this season and said she’s excited about seeing some underclassmen step up this season.

“I really think that freshman year is such a year where people come out from under the radar and you don’t even know them yet,” Wilson said. “But I think both freshmen Jenna and Sydney Ferstrom can do very well this year.”

Finley Anderson - Evergreen Cougars Perhaps the strongest living dynasty in high school sports in Colorado stays active in Evergreen swimming and diving. The Cougars have won five straight 3A state championships and don’t plan on slowing down soon.

Evergreen finished with 443 points, which is 21 more than the team posted last year. As previously reported by CHSAA, “Finley Anderson won the butterfly in a time of 55.35 seconds. Anderson then repeated in the backstroke by breaking the 3A state record that she had set the previous day during preliminaries. Her time of 54.10 seconds is now just a little more than a second off the allColorado state record of legend Missy Franklin.”

Anderson is committed to the University of California, Berkeley, but spoke on some remaining high school goals.

“I would love to get another state championship,” Anderson said.

“Overall I just want to, of course, get school records, but I want to grow our team and culture. I’m pretty confident. We have a lot of new freshmen coming in, and altogether I think our team has really come together.”

Girls wrestling

Just one girls wrestler from the CCM area was in attendance, and a star at that.

Persaeus Gomez - Pomona Panthers Persaeus Gomez dominated the 120 weight class. At state, Gomez (20-0) placed first and scored 29.0 team points. Here are her individual results in that class from CHSAA’s results webpage.

• Round 1: Gomez won by fall over Mathilde Abercrombie (Denver South, 15-14) (Fall 0:40) • Quarterfinal: Gomez won by fall over Katherine Seals (Fountain-Fort Carson, 19-8) (Fall 2:15) • Semifinal: Gomez won by fall over Kate Doughty (Canon City, 31-6) (Fall 1:10) • Final: 1st Place Match - Gomez won by major decision over Lexie Lopez (Loveland, 32-1) (Decision 14-2) “I think this year we have a really good chance, like every other year,” Gomez said.

Boys wrestling

Two talented and decorated

boys wrestlers spoke to the media on Nov. 13; one from the north and one from the southwest Denver area.

D’mitri Garza-Alcaron - Fort Lupton This senior from Fort Lupton High School doesn’t know how to lose and continually dominates the 138 weight class in Class 3A. D’mitri Garza-Alcaron is just the third three-time state champion in the school’s history. Entering his final season on the mat, he said he’s still determined to prove something. He made his mom a promise to succeed, and he’s sticking to it.

“Fulfilling what I told my mom I was going to do as a child makes me happy. It makes it worth it,” Garza-Alcaron said. “Being the first generation in our family to go to college, it’s pretty amazing.”

He’s still undecided about his specific college plans but plans to wrestle at the next level.

Dale O’Blia - Mullen Mustangs O’Blia set a program record for the Mustangs after he won his third straight state championship last season.

The now-senior finished first at the Class 3A 113-pound weight class last season after winning his first two championships at 106. He was 40-3 last season and is 101-3 overall without a loss in Colorado.

“Pressure is the same every match. I treat it like the state finals,” O’Blia said. “There’s no real pressure just now that I go for four, it’ll be the same as it has been my whole high school career.”

Ice hockey Last but not least, it wouldn’t be Colorado winter sports without good old-fashioned hockey on ice.

Two rivals arrived to speak with the media, and both programs are eager for another strong push for another title.

Ralston Valley Mustangs Second-year coach Nick Spinder knows expectations come with Ralston Valley, especially after he took the Mustangs all the way back to the Class 5A state championship in his first year. As a 2012 grad from the Arvada school, he understands the importance of hockey in the area and treats rivalries with the respect they deserve. The Mustangs won back-to-back state titles in 2013 and 2014.

One of the Mustangs’ main rivals, Valor Christian, earned bragging rights again after beating Ralston

Valley 7-3 in the state championship last season. The Mustangs finished 14-5-2 after handing Valor its one loss last season.

“We are a storied program,” Spinder said. “We’re trying to repeat that success and go get it this year. I feel like as a coach, your end goal is always the top of the mountain.”

Valor Christian Eagles Valor Christian will likely always be right at the top of the Class 5A state ice hockey rankings. The Eagles finished 20-1 last season, riding a 20-game winning streak to the state title where they avenged their sole loss of the season by beating Ralston Valley for the championship.

It was the fifth time Valor went to the championship in the past six seasons. Head Coach George Gwozdecky said he knows it will be a challenge to replace some core pieces that were lost to graduation if the Eagles want to ward off Ralston Valley again.

“To be able to play at the level that last year played at, it will be tough,” Gwozdecky said. “Certainly we’re very fortunate to have certain guys coming back who are going to fill very important roles starting with our goaltenders. (Protecting the goal) is probably our number-one strength as a team at least coming into the CHSAA season.”
