On June 11, a U-Haul moving truck in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, was pulled over by multiple law enforcement agencies. In the back of the truck they found 31 men, allegedly associated with the far right white supremacist group, Patriot Front.

The men, all dressed in similar clothes — khaki pants, blue shirts and white masks that obscured their faces except for the eyes — also were carrying shields and riot gear.

All 31 were arrested on “suspicion of conspiring to riot,” at a Pride in the Park event to be held that same afternoon.

Three of the 31 men arrested that day had come from the Denver Metro Area. They have been identified as Conor Ryan, 23, of Thornton; Nathan Brenner, 26, of Louisville; and Forrest Rankin, 28, of Wheat Ridge.

According to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, the traffic stop was the result of a tip from a concerned citizen who saw the men loading into the truck. The caller said the men looked like “a little army.”

Arvada Library hosts youth Pride celebration featuring parade, arts and crafts LGBTQ+ community members and allies gather for Pride festivities

Olde Town Arvada was dotted with LGBTQ+ Pride flags and adornments June 18, as the Arvada Library held its annual youth Pride celebration. This year’s iteration featured a parade for the first time and was attended by about 50 young people and their families.

Arvada Library Manager Jennifer Reading said the event got its start thanks to a suggestion from the library’s teen advisory board and has grown over the years to include more resources and this year’s parade.

Reading said the importance of hosting a youth Pride event was to let LGBTQ+ kids know they’re valued and supported, even if their family may not be accepting.

“Unfortunately, in a lot of situations, families aren’t supportive,” Reading said. “With partnering with the schools and creating that network, we show there is a safe space for them to be.”

As parents around the country struggle to find baby formula on depleted grocery store shelves, Arvada community members and organizations are pitching in to help out. To address the shortage, Mothers’ Milk Bank — based in Arvada — partnered with Gov. Polis to provide free milk to families in need.

Polis’ executive order subsidizes the cost and shipping of donor milk for 30 days following May 25. Rebecca Heinrich, director of Mothers’ Milk Bank, said she anticipated the executive order being extended after the first deadline, as an end to the shortage still seems far off.

Heinrich added that while Mothers’ Milk Bank has primarily served hospitals and NICUs in the past, its approach has become multi-faceted in the wake of the shortage.

“When the Governor’s Office first reached out, we knew this would be a two-fold effort,” Heinrich said.

“First, raise awareness of donations in the community so parents knew if they had excess milk, we absolutely

have babies who need them. Eightyfive percent of the milk we pasteurize goes to hospitals and NICUs. “With the formula shortage, we knew we had a specific ability to be the source here and try to help as best we could in a difficult situation,” Heinrich continued. “We’re very happy to offer subsidized milk for Colorado patients who need it. It’s a huge relief for parents.”

Heinrich confirmed that Mothers’ Milk Bank has enough milk to meet the current demand, which has seen outpatient recipients of milk increase astronomically.

“As of this week, we have a comfortable supply that allows us to serve all outpatients who come through the door,” Heinrich said.

“We have milk available for any outpatients who are coming in at this point, which is a wonderful place to be. It’s nice to have a full freezer and be able to share this with the community at no cost to the family.

“Year over year we’re up 36% for outpatient recipients who are not hospitalized,” Heinrich continued.

“That number is even bigger for June so far — we’re actually up 92% for the month of June, which we have to assume is directly related to the need in the community.”

Mothers’ Milk Bank follows the strict guidelines set forth by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. All donors are screened by staff members, undergo blood testing and must have their health care providers sign forms confirming their medical histories. The milk is pasteurized and tested prior to being dispensed.

The event also featured a barbecue contest, with contestants serving up their best barbecue staples and attendees voting on their favorites. Proceeds from the event go toward the Arvada-Jefferson Kiwanis Club, Arvada Sunrise Rotary and the Arvada Vitality Alliance.

White nationalist groups and their members are not new to Colorado. In fact, the metro area has a long, complicated history with race.

Five-term Denver Mayor Benjamin Stapleton was an active member of the Ku Klux Klan. After initially disavowing the group while running for his first term in 1923, he changed course — wholeheartedly embracing his association with them, as he was facing a tough recall election the following year.

In his book “Hooded Empire: the Ku Klux Klan in Colorado,” author Robert Alan Goldberg describes Stapleton’s close ties to the group.

“On July 14, 1924, Mayor Stapleton addressed a Klan gathering on South Table Mountain and reaffirmed his commitment: ‘I have little to say, except that I will work with the Klan and for the Klan in the coming election, heart and soul. And if I am reelected, I shall give the Klan the kind of administration

it wants.’”

What about now?

The Southern Poverty Law Center was started in 1971 with the idea of dismantling Jim Crow era injustices that were still occurring in the South, despite passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Today, according to statements on its website, SPLC continues that mission, while also tracking white supremacist activity throughout the country. In fact, a link to an interactive map of organizations it classifies as ‘hate groups’ can be found on the SPLC website’s home page.

Colorado is home to 18 of those groups — more than Wyoming, Utah, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and New Mexico combined.

One of the groups listed on the SPLC map is Lakewood-based Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform. Among other things, the group’s website promotes debunked stolen 2020 election narratives and numerous tales the Great Replacement Theory — widely reported to be a motivating in the recent mass shooting in a Buffalo, NY grocery store that took the lives of 10 mostly Black victims.

Realtor Magazine Online: Builders Need to Recognize That Home Electrification Is Trending It isn’t in the print edition of Realtor Magazine, but a June 8 article on its website is titled, “The Future Is Now: Home Electrification.” I will post a link for the article on our blog, www.GoldenREblog.com.

Regular readers of this column know that home electrification has been “now” for several years here at Golden Real Estate.

At the Net Zero Store in our former building on South Golden Road, Helio Home Inc. is busier than ever responding to people who want to replace their gas forced air furnaces with heat pump units and their gas water heaters with heat pump water heaters. The primary focus of the Realtor Magazine article is on the need for home builders to include a larger electrical service as fossil fuels are phased out. Number one, it said, was to accommodate an electric car, since the major car manufacturers are committed to going all-electric or mostly electric by the end of this decade.

The article promotes the idea of installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to generate electricity for your home and car.

With such a system, the author of the article correctly points out that the electrical grid can function as your home battery (thanks to net metering), but doesn’t understand how it really works. He states that the utility will buy your excess solar production but says you might have to buy electricity for your car on a cloudy day. In fact, net metering allows you to send surplus electricity to the grid when you don’t need it, but you get it back at full value when needed. Everyone with a solar PV system should take advantage of the “rollover” option which allows you to be credited for that surplus production long-term rather than get a check each January for the previous year’s surplus production.

When the utility pays you for your surplus electricity, it does so at its cost of generating that same amount of electricity — a couple cents per kilowatt-hour.

But if you use that surplus electricity later on, you save the full retail rate (over 10¢ cents per kWH) over purchasing those kilowatt-hours from the utility.

Not understanding that process, the author promotes the idea of a home battery system, but, as I wrote before, that only needs to be considered if you have medical equipment which must keep running during a blackout.

The author promotes the installation of a 240V car charging station, suggesting that this could require a larger electrical panel in older homes. I disagree.

The Level 2 charging station only draws the same electricity as your electric clothes dryer. If your panel can’t accommodate a dedicated circuit for the car, you could use the same one as the clothes dryer and not use both appliances at the same time. (I recognize that this is not what the electric code dictates, but it’s still safe if you have a 40-amp breaker on that circuit, because if you do accidentally run the dryer and the car charger at the same time, it would trip the breaker.)

Also, every EV comes with a 120V cord to plug your car into a standard household outlet. Although that only gets you 4 miles of range per hour of connection, that’s still over 50 miles of range overnight, which may suffice, especially if you have other charging options during the day. Downtown Golden, for example, has ten free Level 2 charging stations in its garages and elsewhere, and you can gain another 50+ miles of range within their 3-hour time limit.

blowers to chain saws that you can buy online or at Lowes. Ego Power is the biggest brand in this field, and their various tools all use the same interchangeable batteries.

Not mentioned in the article, sadly, are the biggest home energy consumers—your furnace and water heater. As I said, you can speak to Helio Home about converting gas units to electric heat pump units.

For cooking, I have written in the past about induction electric ranges, and I’m really fond of our electric grill, shown at right. Lift it off its stand and you can use the grill on your countertop. You can’t do that with a gas grill!

And it plugs into your standard 120V patio outlet. We bought ours at Home Depot for $100. Food grilled on it tastes just as good as when cooked on a gas grill.

Can our electrical grid handle the increased use of electricity over fossil fuels, given, for example, that a KPMG survey projects that by 2030 over 50% of car sales in America will be all-electric? You may have read warnings about the adoption of EVs overtaxing our electrical transmission systems, but I disagree. Solar panels are being installed equally as quickly and perhaps more so, and that electricity is consumed within your neighborhood if not by yourself, reducing the needed flow from

the utility. And, as I said, even with Level 2 charging, an EV only draws the same amount of electricity as a clothes dryer.

Home builders can and should adapt to this trend, and are in fact required to do so by some local building codes. For example, every new home should be built solarready if not solar-powered, by having chases within the home which could accommodate the electrical lines going to roof-mounted solar panels. Also, garages should be wired with a 240V outlet on their front walls in addition to the usual 120V outlets on three walls.

I was encouraged to see that a new 300-unit apartment complex about to break ground in Lakewood between Owens and Pierson Streets is, according to the plans I studied, going to have 10 or more EV parking spaces on each level of its 5-story garage.

One of the more interesting flaws in the Realtor Magazine article was the suggestion that home garages should be insulated or even heated to preserve the health of an EVs battery. This is a misinterpretation of the fact that EVs lose range in the winter.

It’s not that the battery loses power in cold weather, but rather that heating the car’s cabin uses battery power which thereby reduces the car’s range, as does the heating of the battery itself to its optimum operating temperature.

Jeffco News Briefs: County manager departs for Broomfield Commissioners looking to balance budget cuts with staffing concerns

County manager departs for Broomfield Jefferson County Manager Don Davis has resigned, effective July 1, to take a role with the City and County of Broomfield.

Starting July 11, he will be Broomfield’s new deputy city and county manager.

While Jeffco hasn’t started searching for Davis’ replacement yet, Deputy County Manager Kate Newman will be taking over the role in the interim, officials stated during a June 14 county commissioners meeting.

Davis has been with Jeffco since May 2017, joining the county after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps for 32 years. He holds two master’s degrees, including one in public administration. He retired with the rank of colonel and joined Jeffco to manage its 3,000 employees.

Based on coverage by the Broomfield Leader, Davis met with Broomfield community members and city and county officials on May 12. He was announced as the next deputy manager on May 18.

“I am grateful for the opportunity

to join the CCOB Team in their endeavor to serve the residents of Broomfield,” Davis said in a May 18 Broomfield news release. “It was an intense hiring process.”

Commissioners looking to balance budget cuts with staffing concerns While Jeffco departments and offices would like to give salary bumps to the employees to help with hiring, retention and morale, the county commissioners say there’s not much money to go around.

During a June 14 staff briefing, the Coroner’s Office asked for an additional $234,000 for employee pay raises to make the office’s salaries more competitive with others in the metro area.

Jeffco Coroner’s Office representatives said their Denver counterparts’ salaries start $10,000 a year more than Jeffco’s, and 75% of Jeffco investigators’ salaries are in the minimum range for their profession.

With the additional $234,000, the Coroner’s Office could get the investigators’ salaries into the medium range. The office has seen prospective employees turn down jobs because the pay is too low, and it’s very hard on morale, staff members described.

However, Commissioner Lesley Dahlkemper pointed out that the Coroner’s Office isn’t the only one facing employee recruitment and retention problems.

Coloradans need somewhere to safely dump old electronics A Denver service is trying to help

Craig McNeal wrestles the Toshiba wall-mounted TV — once futuristic, now problematic — onto the recycling warehouse’s scale. While still wrangling it into position, he guesses: 60 pounds?

The impassive scale reveals just how big is the challenge ahead: 64 pounds, to be precise, of obsolete plastic, metal and microchips that must be taken apart and reused responsibly.

McNeal glances around the warehouse on Decatur Street in Denver’s Sun Valley, neat but crammed with the detritus of home entertainment culture: Computer monitors. Barrels of batteries pulled from kids’ toys.

Keyboards that used to anchor garage bands and now just anchor garages.

“I’m a huge nerd,” McNeal shrugs, as a dedicated recycler and a nostalgic.

“I love seeing all the old game consoles.

Nintendo. Game Cubes. Our record for one day was a little over 3,000 pounds.”

The unwieldy Toshiba flat screen and the rest of the day’s haul came at the beckon of a new home electronics recycling service called Retrievr. Citing a major gap in U.S. recycling that leaves millions of pounds of outdated, potentially valuable materials wasted instead of reused every year, Retrievr makes appointment house calls to

For now, the service is free because it is subsidized by major technology firms ranging from Apple to Dell to Google, which are under pressure to help increase recycling of electronics in ways that don’t leave toxic metals and plastics on garbage barges headed to less-developed countries. For at least the next few weeks, Retrievr will waive its usual $20 home pickup fee for everything except big TVs and large computer monitors.

TV pickups were initially free at Retrievr’s spring Denver launch as well, and wildly popular. The startup collected more than 100,000 pounds of electronics in the first few weeks. Now, pickups for big TVs start at about $30, and volume has decreased, though recyclers are convinced there are plenty more customers looking to clean out family rooms and basements. Retrievr contracts in Denver with McNeal’s employer, Blue Star Recyclers, for the pickups and sorting.

Only about 17% of 53.6 million metric tons of consumer electronics are responsibly recycled and documented each year, according to a recent international report, leaving 44.3 million tons unaccounted for. The brands backing Retrievr have identified barriers to recycling including: no at-home pickup by municipal recyclers; no knowledge of one-time dropoff programs; desire for complex technology to be reused by someone rather than thrown away; and worries that private data are left on storage devices and will be abused.

“So we’re working to address each of those barriers,” Retrievr CEO Kabira Stokes said.

materials offer information on how to wipe data. If consumers can’t do it themselves, Retrievr certifies that its recycling handlers use standard wiping protocols.

• The partners, who are also experimenting with a pilot in Philadelphia, are trying all forms of media to get word out, from TikTok to tables at farmer’s markets to listings in city recycling directories.

• Used computers that look like they still have life in them are wiped of data and then offered to nonprofits and other potential re-users.

• Final processing of recyclable materials is not done in Denver, but items are sent to others who take out the metals and other useful or toxic parts in a “certified chain of custody through the end-life of the material.”

“We’re just trying to build out the ecosystem of options for people,” Stokes said. “We’re just trying to move these recycling rates.”

The new service joins Colorado and local governments that are already on a forceful recycling push. Denver wants to boost the percentage of material residents keep out of the waste stream from 15% closer to the national average of 34%, with the city council likely to vote this month on a plan that would, for the first time, charge for the volume of garbage while expanding recycling frequency and free composting.

Colorado legislators passed a bill setting up a statewide “producer responsibility” program, where makers of consumer packaging will pay fees into a pool that will help cities and counties expand their recycling programs and create local markets for recyclable materials.

Other specialty recycling programs are starting up privately, with Ridwell as one example. Ridwell is a subscription service that brings a box to the consumer’s doorstep that can be filled with hard-to-recycle items like batteries, plastic film, light bulbs and more.

Ridwell’s basic service is $16 a month for a three-month agreement. The company does not take large electronics.

Jeffco Schools’ spring 2022 MAP test results show good fall-to-spring growth

Student achievement and growth results in reading and math 20182022 — with no results for 2020 when students didn’t take the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test due to COVID-19 — were discussed June 2 during the final Jeffco Board of Education meeting of the 2021-22 school year.

Drilling down into the data, Deputy Superintendent Kim LeBlanc-Esparza reviewed results for students in grades 3-10.

Before LeBlanc-Esparza started her presentation, Board President Stephanie Schooley reminded the audience of District policy stating the following: “Every school in the District will ensure that every student has the opportunity to work toward being connected to career, college and/or life aspirations with the expectation that every student will demonstrate a year or more of growth on their way to mastery of Colorado academic standards,” she said.

Looking at Reading Achievement Trends by grade in grades 3-5, data showed that students actually did slightly better in 2022 than in 2021, with scores in the High/High Average range coming in anywhere from 1-3 percentage points higher

than the previous year. However, the 2022 scores for Grades 3 and 5 were slightly lower than 2018 scores.

Between 2021 and 2022, sixth graders showed a slight increase at the High/High Average level, while seventh graders showed no increase and High/High Average scores among eighth graders actually declined by 2 percentage points.

For grades 6-8, reading numbers paint a different picture. For example in 2018, 54% of Grade 6 students scored in the High/High Average categories. In 2022, that number dropped to 48%. For students in Grade 8, the decline was even greater. 12% fewer 8th graders scored in the High/High Average categories in 2022, compared to 2018.

Grades 9 and 10 reading scores were a mixed bag. Grade 9 fared a bit worse, with a two percentage point decrease in High/High Average categories and a one point increase in Low/Low Average, compared to 2021 scores. Students in Grade 10 showed a two point increase in High/High Average and no change in Low/Low Average.

In her presentation, LeBlancEsparza said what jumped out to her about the MAP Spring 2022 trends is that the district still has a significant number of middle school students at average, low average and low achievement

performance levels.

“As someone who works with our academic leadership team, this is a place where we really have to dig in and ask ourselves ‘What are we going to do to address the needs of these students specifically, when they come back in the fall, to start to address the impact of the last two years,’” she said.

In math, things look slightly better for grades 3 and 4, with noticeable increases in performance at the High/High Average levels, between 2021 and 2022. In fact, 2022 math scores are also higher in grades 3 and 4 than they were in 2018 as well.

Fifth graders showed slightly less improvement in math between 2021 and 2022, with a small decrease in High/High Average scores from 2018 results.

LeBlanc-Esparza noted that due to “re-norming” of test scores in 2020, it makes it hard to say how much students have actually bounced back.

Finally, LeBlanc-Esparza looked at Title I vs. non-Title I scores. To be clear, the differences are drastic. But perhaps the most concerning aspect of the data is how little difference there is between 2018 and 2022 Title I numbers. While the pandemic clearly had a strong detrimental impact, especially at the middle school level, the 2018

numbers weren’t much better.

According to LeBlanc-Esparza, the data did reveal some good news. She said across the board, from grades 3-10, fall-to-spring, median growth in reading increased for all grade levels compared to the 2020-21 school year. Grades 3 and 4 experienced the highest fall-to-spring median growth. Fall-to-Spring math scores showed good growth levels as well, increasing among all grade levels compared to the 2020-21 school year.

Oh, those summer nights at the Arvada Center

C

olorado is home to plenty of well-known — even world famous — concert venues, but some of the best shows I’ve seen have been at the numerous venue gems sprinkled all over the metro area. Take the Arvada Center’s Outdoor Amphitheater, which provides some lovely summer night skylines without the massive queues and uphill climbs.

The 2022 Summer Concert Series at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., is one of the strongest yet, with local favorites that are part of the fabric of summer — like the Colorado Symphony — and national touring acts like Dawes, Madeleine Peyroux and Melissa Etheridge.

Feds ignore Polis’ plea to stop wild horse roundups Roundup planned on the Western Slope

Federal officials will begin capturing hundreds of mustangs roaming in far northwestern Colorado this week, dismissing a request from Gov. Jared Polis to halt roundups while the state and U.S. Bureau of Land Management find a “more humane” option for managing wild horses.

The federal agency’s announcement of its next roundup — in the Piceance-East Douglas rangeland outside Meeker — came after 145 wild horses died in an equine flu outbreak at a Cañon City holding facility.

The public land where the East Douglas herd lives is suited for no more than 235 horses, according to the BLM, yet there are 1,385 mustangs on the range.

The roundup was scheduled to begin June 16 with a bait-andtrap operation, in which horses are lured into a corral with fresh water and food. Federal officials plan to bring in a helicopter and horseback riders in mid-July to round up more mustangs.

The roundup was originally scheduled for September, but the BLM moved it up because the horses are so malnourished coming out of winter, officials said.

“We saw some horses really suffering in March and April,” Elijah Waters, the BLM’s northwest district manager, said in an email. “We were getting quite a bit of feedback from the public to do something, and we felt like the best option was to gather as soon as we could for the horses in poor condition and for the horses that will remain and need forage before going into next winter.”

The horse deaths, which began April 23 and stopped May 26, incited outcry from mustang advocates around the country and Colorado’s governor and first gentleman, Marlon Reis, an animal rights advocate. Polis already had urged federal officials last summer to pause wild horse roundups and work with Colorado on a gentler solution to the abundance of horses on public lands. That plea came ahead of a helicopter roundup last summer of 684 horses in the Sand Wash Basin in northern Colorado along the Wyoming border.

After the Cañon City outbreak, Polis again wrote to the BLM asking them to call off scheduled roundups.

VOICES In need of a reprieve

E

arly in the football season, October can feel like August.

Sitting among the crowd at Mile High, one can sometimes witness a phenomenon of human nature. The east stands orient to constant sunshine while the west stands remain in the shade for much of the game. The south stands....well, the south stands are another story entirely! The north stands get a little sun and a little shade and a good view of the rest of the stadium.

As people pack into their seats, those in the east stands where the sunshine blazes shed their light jackets while those in the chilly west stands pull theirs tighter with a bit of envy. And the sun beats down. If conditions are right, there will be a lull in the game at the same time a sturdy cloud drifts in front of the sun. At that moment, 20,000 people will utter a collective “ahhh” of relief. Everyone in the stadium can hear their solace. Well, maybe not in the south stands. In the north stands, people note the chords of deliverance and smile, nodding at one another to acknowl-

edge that some of their brethren broncophiles had been suffering but had also received some reprieve.

Meanwhile, the chilled people in the west stands realize the drawbacks of sitting in seemingly preferential sunshine and so don’t mind their lot Judy Allison after all.

Oh! There’s an interception and any inkling of insight sails away on the breeze.

Imagine the collective sighs of relief that could come after the upcoming elections if the winning candidates from both tickets were of a caliber that citizens could rely on to solve our common problems.

We’re all so beaten down by the searing hot air of people who allege governance should be a competition and not a collaboration. They pander and blather about with little intent to improve the country.

They are the ones to eliminate from

the ballot. Regardless of party, integrity matters. Character matters.

Seek out and support those leaders.

Imagine the massive unburdening across the country if the number of obstinately intolerant people on the right added to the number of obstinately intolerant people on the left to just cease and desist. What a reprieve from the culture wars we would enjoy if people just refused to participate.

What a relief for the mechanism of democracy which functions best when voters rise above their own self-righteous interests to pitch in together toward the common good.

Can’t be done, you opine? Think back to that collective sigh from the east stands. Had there not been a genuinely spontaneous reaction, there would have been nothing to hear in the north stands, no redress to acknowledge. There would have been no encouragement for fans in the west stands to count their blessings and be at peace. Of course the south stands would be too engrossed in their own super-fandom to notice, but their numbers match the popluation’s general equation.

A successful repudiation of our virulent status quo starts with each individual turning away from those who incite animosity and conflict and toward those who promote inspiration and hope. It’s just as easy to turn one direction as the other. All it takes is an act of free will.

Is the cynic in you snorting in derision at this simple, naive formula? Well then, prove yourself correct. For one day, make eye contact with every stranger you cross paths with and offer up a sunny smile. Keep partisan tag lines out of your conversations. If, by bedtime, you have not noticed just the tiniest improvement in your world, go ahead and snort and indeed things will not change. But you will be right. For what that’s worth.

The potential threat to the wildlife environment

y name is Sharon McCarthy. I am a resident of Forest Springs in West Arvada as well as one founding organizer of the nonprofit Friends of Ralston Creek Neighborhoods (https://frcneighborhoods.org.)

Three communities in West Arvada received notice in mid-December 2021 that a developer was planning a proposed RV storage lot on a closed unregulated landfill adjacent to our communities. We sensed this was not a good idea and quickly collected our resources. We organized a non-profit and started researching the topic of unregulated landfills. What we discovered was more concerning.

Many unregulated landfills were closed when laws were more lenient; therefore they comply with standards at that time but most likely would fail current operational standards Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Voluntary Clean Up Act is lax towards development and leaves oversight of cleanup to vendors

Our concerns are twofold: the interruption of the pristine Ralston Trail wildlife environment by unsightly RV’s and the effect of tons of road and RV’s on the subsurface of the unregulated landfill possibly contaminating Ralston Creek waters.

Closing of the landfill and subsequent development of the land seems to be well within the past and current legislature. If this land was in the middle of a desert, the concerns might be of a different nature. However, since the land is adjacent to Ralston Creek, we question if the same application of law and operational guidelines can be applied to development? This situation is not a “one size fits all.”

What if there is another 100-year event? What is the effect of tons of roads and RV’s on substructure?

And really, what is the substructure — unstable mix of soils and trash and unknown hazardous

elements?

From the Colorado Sun: “The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment recently began creating an inventory of landfills that closed after 1967, when the state passed the Colorado Solid Waste Act and began regulating them. Most of the closed landfills in Colorado shut down under looser requirements than currently exist, purposefully ceasing operations ahead of 1993 federal rules that ramped up environmental standards. About 90 landfills in Colorado opted to close instead of meeting the standards. State officials intend to inspect each of them to determine whether they were closed properly and present ‘a low risk to the people and the environment.’ The site visits of those landfills, many now closed for 25 years, have not yet begun.”

Our questions are: Are the same environmental conditions noted in 1982 and 2007 still present today?

What are the properties of the elements as to the degree of hazard to wildlife and communities? How stable is substructure — will shift of soils and trash cause hazard conditions? What examples of unregulated landfill end uses and mitigation are available? How much research has an RV developer done beyond looking at a piece of land covered with native grasses — does he know what is beneath the surface?

We are looking for partners in the media willing to work with us to enlighten our neighbors and the City about the potential threat to the Ralston Creek Trail wildlife environment. We have research and will share but we need help.

Reminding people of the dangers of swimming pools for toddlers

M

y grandtwins, Rose and Lars, are now 27 months old. They are about the same age that my nephew Christopher was when he was found in my sister and brother-in-law’s swimming pool.

I have not previously written about, nor shared in public, the details of this pool tragedy.

Even though the death of my nephew occurred over 35 years ago, I am moved to write about it now.

Why? Two reasons: 1) Because the broad swath of heat waves has given the media another opportunity to try to persuade, plea and beg the adults in the room to realize the dangers of swimming pools And 2) Because there is no better time than this moment for my personal public service pool announcement as I try to prevent another drowning, like what our family has suffered.

How Christopher got into the pool is not a mystery.

He was happy, always on the move, eager to explore life.

He was a typical, spirited, inquisitive, gorgeous, healthy toddler.

Some of the details of that day are a bit faded, but the gist of my memory is that my sister was in the house tending to her newest baby who was only a few months old.

Her husband was in the yard, but out of view of the pool.

Through some totally understandable miscommunication or misunderstanding, these loving young parents had not realized they had made a fateful mistake in believing/assuming/were certain that the other parent was the one responsible for overseeing their toddler for those particular few moments.

Where the never-ending heartbreak begins is with the events that led up to that summer day.

At the time, my sister and her husband had recently moved into a newly built home in Oklahoma. They had left New York for a job opportunity, and it wasn’t too long before they realized they wanted relief from the oppressive heat and humidity.

They began planning for the installation of an in-ground pool.

My wise father said he had told them in no uncertain terms, and on multiple occasions, that this was a bad idea.

He told them not to have a pool while the babies were so little.

He wasn’t the only adult in the room advising them against a pool in their

He understood their desire to have a pool. We had an inground pool in New York while I was a child, and we grew up all the better for having that luxurious joy and exercise outlet.

The difference is my siblings and I were water savvy the day my parents had the enormous silver-colored tanker come into our backyard in order to fill our pool with water.

We basically grew up on the same beaches on Long Island, just like my father had as a child. My parents had taught us all how to swim as youngsters, and even gave me and some of my other siblings swimming lessons in a community pool.

Before my parents’ own pool was functional, not only did we all know how to swim, we knew the fundamentals of safety at the beach and at the pool.

But this was not the same for Christopher.

My sister and brother-in-law went ahead with their pool installation, even though my sister was then pregnant with son number two, and Christopher was about 2 ½ years old.

Old enough to start swimming lessons.

As the digging for their pool began and my father’s concerns grew ever stronger, this pool project began to alarm me too. Back then, my daughter Jesse was just a few months younger than Christopher, with a similar nature: super active, alert, curious, precious as all get-out.

As the pool project continued, the rains in Oklahoma came in spurts.

Over some weeks’ time, the wet ground around the pool only served to delay the installation of the cement footings for the protective fence that was intended to safely enclose the pool.

But there was no safety to be had for Christopher. There was no successful resuscitation.

I am now older than my father was when he lost his grandson. I prevent myself from going too deeply into the memories, wanting not to fathom the grief and suffering my father endured over the loss of his grandson, knowing he wondered many a sleepless night what else he could have said or done to stop my sister from digging that pool.

The shock of Christopher’s death remains as clear as that pool water.

The specifics of Christopher’s sudden death helped create an everlasting memory of misery and sadness, one rife with regrets and guilt. That pool drowning has rippled across generations of relatives and friends who are no longer able to look at pools in quite the same joyful way as they once did.

Year after year it’s the same agony for many families.

The suffering can be stopped for some. The suffering and loss can be minimized.

Help me to help other families avoid a pool tragedy.

Help me to encourage everyone who is capable, to learn how to swim.

Rose and Lars start swimming lessons in a few days.

I’ll be at the indoor community pool with them, and haunting thoughts of my sister and her beloved tiny Christopher will be as close to my heart as a wet and clingy swimsuit feels on a terribly hot and humid day.

Allison Swanberg

December 7, 1959 - June 10, 2022

Allison Thomas Swanberg, 62, longtime resident of Arvada, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2022 at Lutheran Medical Center surrounded by family and close friends.

Allison was born in Fort Worth, Texas December 7, 1959 to Tom Thomas and Alice Sweet Thomas. Shortly after, the family moved to Arvada, Colorado where Allison and her brothers Mark and Brian were raised.

Tom and Alice became integral parts of the community: Tom was a member of the Arvada City Council, and the park at 80th and Simms was constructed in Alice’s honor after her death in 1974.

Loving daughter, mother, grandmother, and wife, Allison poured her heart and soul into her family. She married the love of her life, HITE

Don Swanberg, on May 14, 1983 and subsequently became the proud mother of three daughters: Kelsey, Krissy, and Gracie, and an adoring grandmother to her two grandchildren: Michael Joseph and Lainey Sweet. Allison never missed a chance to support the ones she loved and showed up to every softball game, choir concert, musical, or any other activity involving her daughters. “Momma Swan” was everyone’s mom. She cared deeply for others, and always made sure everyone felt welcomed and loved.

We are truly saddened by her sudden loss.

Allison is survived by her husband, daughters, grandchildren, and two brothers.

A Celebration of Life will be held July 2, 2022 at 1pm at Trinity Presbytarian Church 7755 Vance Drive Arvada, Colorado 80003.

Joanne (Harris) Hite

July 18, 1931 - February 12, 2022

Joanne Hite, age 90 of Arvada, Colorado passed away on February 12, 2022 at Covenant Living in Westminster, Colorado. Joanne was born July 18, 1931 in Wichita, Kansas to Arthur Harris, an architect, and Hazel Walcher, a piano teacher and homemaker. She was devoted to her beloved older brother Robert Harris who also became an architect. He suffered from polio as a young man and Joanne was faithfully by his side, especially when he had to endure a hot, humid Wichita summer in a full body cast, before air conditioning. She was a good student and enjoyed spending lots of time with her lifelong best friends, identical twins Dorothy and Margie. Joanne was a beauty, with her dark hair and blue eyes she was often compared to Elizabeth Taylor and many friends called her “Liz”. While pursuing her degree in sociology at the University of Wichita she met her husband Robert “Bob” Hite and they married in 1953. A popular student in college, Joanne was active in many activities including the school newspaper. She worked as a secretary to help support Bob while he finished his degree in geology and then did graduate work at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. When Bob got a job with the USGS they moved to Salt Lake City where Joanne had three children. Bob was transferred to the Denver Federal Center in 1964 and they settled into their house in

Arvada, Colorado in 1966. As Bob’s career in geology took him to all parts of the globe Joanne was dedicated to raising the kids and running the home.

She had many friends that she spent time with playing tennis, bridge and biking. A special group of ladies known as the “Lucky 13” and the “Tennis Amies” all met in Arvada playing tennis when most were young mothers. They remained connected ever since through all of life’s ups and downs, and had great fun on trips to France and Italy. Joanne also enjoyed skiing, gardening (especially flowers) and was a voracious reader. She and Bob were fortunate to go on many bicycling tours around the world, well into their seventies. She was a HUGE Denver Bronco fan and acquired season tickets at Mile High Stadium in 1970. Joanne received tickets in 1998 to watch the Broncos win their first thrilling Super Bowl in San Diego, California against the Green Bay Packers along with her son Cass. She is survived by her daughter Robin Hite and son-in-law Jerry Paulsen, and two sons Cass and Bruce Hite. She is preceded in passing by her parents Arthur Harris and Hazel Walcher and her husband Robert “Bob” Hite. A “Celebration of Life” will be held July 31st at Hudson Gardens and Event Center in Littleton, Colorado from 4:00–8:00pm. Please RSVP the family if you would like to attend.

ver wanted to take a road trip across the state without slogging through an hours-long drive on highways?

Residents can let public transportation take the wheel on trips to places near and far, including a new long-distance shuttle line that runs from the Denver area to places such as Idaho Springs, Frisco and Vail.

Other bus routes can take you to Fort Collins, Longmont, Colorado Springs and even Grand Junction.

And public transportation can also take you to some destinations in the suburbs you may not be familiar with.

Here’s a look at the public transportation routes that run through these places and more — with a rundown of some attractions along the way.

RTD in the suburbs You might not think twice when you watch a Regional Transportation District, or RTD, bus roll past, but the bus and rail systems can drop riders close to many scenic areas around town.

Olde Town Arvada, for example, sits along the RTD G Line, a commuter rail line that runs between Union Station in the downtown Denver area and Wheat Ridge. As opposed to RTD’s light rail lines, the commuter rail lines travel at faster speeds.

The historical atmosphere and “social hub” feeling in Olde Town Arvada — near Ralston Road and Wadsworth Boulevard — make it a great place to visit, said Austin Nettleton, a RTD spokesperson.

“That’s pretty much one of my favorite spots to go to — there’s so many cool food and drink places,” said Nettleton, who used to live near that area, in Broomfield, and would go down to the RTD Olde Town Arvada station.

Meanwhile, the N Line can take you from Denver through the north and east suburbs of Commerce City, Thornton and North-

The N rail line largely weaves through residential areas, but the Northglenn-112th Station — near York Street and 112th Avenue — sits within walking distance of Carpenter Park, a place that offers a laundry list of activities.

“They’ve got a pretty cool skate park there (and) a huge outdoor park. A boathouse, you can rent those little paddle boats. And they’ve got a huge rec center there too,” Nettleton said.

(Paddle boats have been unavailable due to a staffing shortage, the City of Thornton’s website said as of June 12.)

Other Carpenter Park amenities include a carousel, horseshoe pits, sand volleyball courts and a “sprayground” with a spray pad for enjoying in warm weather, according to Thornton’s website.

Near Denver’s southeast edge sits RTD’s Dayton Station along Interstate 225, where riders can exit at a trail connection that leads to Cherry Creek State Park.

“There’s even a bridge that goes across 225 to take you to the mountain bike trails,” Nettleton said, referring to a mountain bike skills area along the paths.

Another destination in the suburbs is Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre, a large outdoor concert venue a short walk from RTD’s Arapahoe at Village Center light rail station.

The venue in Greenwood Village hosts well-known music artists and sits close to Arapahoe Road and Interstate 25.

Those who don’t live close to a rail station can bike, take a ride-sharing service such as Lyft or catch an RTD bus to get to a station.

Getting farther north If you’ve been to Boulder, you may have seen the FLEX bus, a non-RTD transit line that serves several places in Colorado’s northern Front Range corridor.

The FLEX route includes stops between Fort Collins, Loveland, Berthoud, Longmont and Boulder.

In light of changing federal mask policy for transportation, masks might not be required in your area on public transit.

Austin Nettleton, a spokesperson for RTD in Denver and surrounding areas, said masks are not required for all passengers and drivers on RTD transportation.

“We encourage and recommend facial coverings, but they are not required or enforced for employees and customers,” Nettleton said.

Anna Russo, a spokesperson

for the Transfort transit system in Fort Collins that extends to Boulder, also said masks are not required for all passengers and drivers.

“We do encourage people to wear masks, but it’s not a requirement,” Russo said.

“We ask that you don’t ride Transfort if you have COVID symptoms,” she added.

Bob Wilson, a Colorado Department of Transportation spokesperson, said passengers are not required to wear masks but drivers are on Bustang routes.

The FLEX bus route that runs between Fort Collins, Loveland, Berthoud, Longmont and Boulder is currently “fare free.”

“So someone could board the FLEX in Boulder and get all the way up to Fort Collins for free,” said Anna Russo, a spokesperson for Transfort, the part of the City of Fort Collins government that operates FLEX. All the routes that are operated

by Transfort, which includes FLEX and MAX and the numbered routes in Fort Collins, are currently free, according to Russo.

Transfort started providing service for free around spring 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic reached Colorado, Russo said.

It was an effort to “help with the pandemic and just support people who might need some financial assistance getting around town,” Russo said. “But then we’ve just continued it through up until now. We might go back to charging fares in the future, but at this time, we don’t have a date for that.”

Officials are conducting a study of Transfort’s revenue sources and costs, and they are looking at the feasibility of continuing to operate fare free permanently, but it’s still unclear, Russo said.

Asked about the most costeffective way to ride, Austin Nettleton, a spokesperson for RTD, “highly recommends” getting the regional/ airport day pass.

It’s $10.50 for adults and allows people to ride any bus or rail line and make as many transfers as they want for the entire service day, Nettleton said.

“Downtown Fort Collins is full of history, and the sugar beet industry was big in town,” said Anna Russo, a spokesperson for Transfort.

Downtown Fort Collins is also known as one of the places that inspired Disneyland’s Main Street USA, according to Russo.

Visitors can take a self-guided walking tour of downtown’s history, learning about the “architecture, wild characters and iconic historic sites,” according to the tourism website VisitFtCollins.com.

If you’re seeking some color, you can swing by Colorado State University’s Annual Flower Trial Garden.

The purpose of the trial garden program is to evaluate the performance of different annual plant cultivars under the unique Rocky Mountain environmental conditions, according to CSU’s website.

“They plant different varieties and different colors of annual flowers, and it’s open to the public. You can walk through them and look,” Russo said.

Nearby in Loveland, visitors can check out the Loveland Museum of Art and History, the Benson Sculpture Garden and the Swim Beach area at Lake Loveland.

“And they can get to those destinations by transferring to City of Loveland transportation from the FLEX,” Russo said.

In the Boulder area, the FLEX line ends at the University of Colorado Boulder campus.

“So that’s a nice area to walk around, and there’s also a museum of natural history on their campus,” Russo said.

“We had heard from

a lot of people (that there was no) option to get from locations throughout the state to Denver.”

Ways to traverse the state CDOT’s Bustang routes make up a network of paths that run through northern, western, southern and part of eastern Colorado.

Bustang routes go between Fort Collins and Denver, Grand Junction and Denver and Colorado Springs and Denver, according to the service’s website.

Additionally, the “Bustang Outrider” routes go between Lamar, Pueblo and Colorado Springs; Alamosa and Pueblo; Durango and Grand Junction; Crested Butte and Denver; Craig and Denver; and Telluride and Grand Junction, according to the website.

Just last month, the state launched another option for travel along the Interstate 70 mountain corridor with the introduction of Pegasus, CDOT’s new express shuttle that began providing passenger service May 27.

Pegasus was to depart year-round from Union Station in Denver, stopping at the Denver Federal Center in Lakewood along with stops in Idaho Springs, Frisco, Vail and Avon, according to a CDOT news release.

A Pegasus shuttle seats up to 11 people, is wheelchair accessible and is equipped with USB ports, power outlets and Wi-Fi. Each vehicle also has luggage storage, bike racks and ski or snowboard containers, according to the news release.

Each Bustang bus is equipped with a restroom, bike racks, free Wi-Fi, power outlets and USB ports, and there are also a wheelchair lift and two wheelchair securement areas on each bus, according to the Bustang website.

Pegasus service runs on weekends, but CDOT plans to expand it to daily service although there isn’t a set date for that yet, said Bob Wilson, a CDOT spokesperson.

The many CDOT routes offer opportunities to explore Colorado’s mountain towns, Wilson said, along with chances to take care of more practical matters.

“It provides people an opportunity if you’re living in Craig, for instance, if you need to see a doctor, you’re able to do that in Denver,” Wilson said.

During the Denver Broncos football season, riders can catch a “Bustang to Broncos” bus, Wilson said. It provides round-trip transportation from both Colorado Springs and Fort Collins to Empower Field at Mile High stadium in Denver.

“And expansion is expected to continue” as resources and funding allow, he added.

Hearing demand from Front Range and rural areas of Colorado drove the creation of the Bustang service, Wilson said.

“We had heard from a lot of people (that there was no) option to get from locations throughout the state to Denver” unless you had a car, Wilson said.

Randy Wheelock, a Clear Creek County commissioner, welcomed the recent addition of the Bustang Pegasus route.

“Whether addressing local air quality or climate change, or addressing both local and state mobility needs, we must transform how we use our roads,” Wheelock said in the news release. “Pegasus has the potential to be that transformational catalyst, helping us want to change how we travel and building ridership for a more thoughtful transportation future.”

The state also offers the Snowstang service during the ski season, providing round-trip service on weekends and holidays from Denver to four resorts: Loveland Ski Area, Copper Mountain, Arapahoe Basin and Steamboat Resort and Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs, according to the Bustang website.

have left the public rangeland, Connolly said, “in search of food and water on nearby private property.”

The herd has grown by about 20% each year, she said. And BLM research found that 80% of the shrubs and grasses consumed on the rangeland last year were eaten by wild horses, which is out of balance for other animals that use the land, she said. Public land managed by the federal agency is leased to cattle and sheep ranchers, as well as used by elk, deer and other wildlife.

“The situation will only grow more dire for these horses, wildlife and the environment,” Connolly wrote.

The governor’s office told The Sun that it was disappointed by the BLM’s decision to move ahead with a “costly and wasteful roundup of our wild horses.” The governor offered “numerous cost-effective and humane alternative methods of management,” including birth control, but those were ignored.

“It is apparent not only that they will not seriously consider better alternatives, allowing only a few weeks for bait-and-trap methods, but that the agency truly doesn’t care to first listen to stakeholders before moving forward,” Polis’ spokesman Conor Cahill said.

The governor was particularly disappointed that the BLM announced its plans for the roundup at the same time it announced a listening session to gather public input.

The governor did get one of his wishes granted by federal officials: no additional horses are headed to the holding pens in Cañon City.

All of the horses that died in this spring’s outbreak were from the West Douglas rangeland, along the Colorado-Utah border. The craggy, mostly inaccessible land was deemed “unsuitable” for wild horses by the BLM, and last summer, the

agency announced an emergency roundup of horses and burros.

The outbreak was caused by a fairly common equine flu virus and was further complicated by a streptococcus bacteria.

Most of the horses had not received a flu vaccine despite being hauled to the holding facility seven months earlier, and the BLM has said it is investigating the reasons for the delay and will release details later.

The American Wild Horse Campaign said it was alarmed by the federal plan to accelerate the roundup, calling it inhumane to send more mustangs into holding facilities that have been plagued with disease. Holding pens across the country are already crowded, said the campaign’s executive director Suzanne Roy. “The BLM already has a capacity crisis on its hands,” she said in an email. “The agency must not use a limited emergency as an excuse to accelerate a wholesale helicopter roundup of hundreds of wild horses and send them to a broken holding system where they are at a heightened risk of disease and death.”

Nationwide, the bureau has more than 56,000 wild horses and burros in holding pens or pastures, some awaiting adoption. That includes more than 2,000 horses in Cañon City, where prison inmates care for the animals.

The agency estimates there are about 82,000 wild horses and burros roaming rangeland in 10 Western states, but says the land is appropriate for only about 26,000 of them. In Colorado, about 1,800 mustangs remain on range, but the federal goal is 827.

Ride the Rockies’ final day takes cyclists through Clear Creek, west Jeffco Cyclists cross finish line in Golden after 6-day trip across Colorado

For some Ride the Rockies participants, those final miles through Clear Creek and Jefferson counties on June 17 were the literal home stretch.

About 1,100 cyclists from 49 states and nine countries made the six-day, 436-mile trek from Copper Mountain to Golden. Of course, Colorado cyclists had a homefield advantage.

One cyclist peeled off at Genesee’s Buffalo Overlook to go home, and Golden’s Russell Roundtree jokingly recalled stopping by his house to grab a cool drink before heading to the finish line.

On June 17, cyclists started their final day in Breckenridge, went over Loveland Pass, through Clear Creek County, along U.S. 40 through El Rancho and Genesee to reach Golden’s Parfet Park.

While the route changes every year, Ride the Rockies has been in Golden before.

Kimberly and Ryan Mallett, who live a few blocks from Parfet Park, said Golden hosting the finish line was partially why they did Ride the Rockies this year.

The Malletts took turns over the six-day trip — one drove the car while the other biked. Ryan did Days 1, 3 and 6; Kimberly rode Days 2 and 4; and they both rode part of Day 5.

Ryan was a first-time Ride the Rockies participant, so Kimberly let him pick which days he wanted to do, she explained.

Kimberly has now done the ride three times, and described how she’s met friends that she and Ryan now go cycling with regularly.

“We have more people to ride with now,” she said of making friends on the six-day ride. “ …

It’s a ride, not a race. There’s lot of camaraderie and support — people cheering each other on.”

After arriving at the finish line festivities, Ryan said the last stretch between Floyd Hill and Parfet Park went by fast. He hit a bit of rain, but he enjoyed coming down the same roads and paths where he and Kimberly have been training.

“It was a fun week,” he said.

Evergreen’s Bob Campbell was also new to Ride the Rockies this year.

Those final miles through west Jeffco “felt like the cows going to the barn — everyone was really excited” to reach the finish line, he said.

Highlands Ranch’s Chris Lucas, who’s done the ride 14 times, commented: “Today was fast and a lot of fun. … It’s a phenomenal ride.”

Navigating the ups and downs Overall, Campbell said, while the route was difficult, he was happy the weather was “generally fantastic.” He said he biked every mile and camped out every night.

Roundtree, who’s done Ride the Rockies 13 or 14 times, said this year’s weather was the best he’s ever seen.

“There was no sleet and snow, like we’ve had in years past,” he said.

Going up Loveland Pass was absolutely perfect, he described.

help with the cyclists’ safety. The temperature was perfect, there was no wind, and Roundtree saw a bighorn sheep herd along the route.

It was the best day of his entire cycling career, he said.

Still, there were hiccups along the way.

Many of the returning cyclists said it was windy earlier in the week, which made climbing difficult. South Jeffco’s Richard Riecks also recalled a couple of cold nights camping.

Unless future routes are safer, Roundtree continued, he wouldn’t be doing Ride the Rockies again.

There were some logistical issues with transportation and road/trail closures. Riecks said there also were a few confusing spots that weren’t properly signed.

“I try to do it every year,” he said. “We had a good ride.”

Without a doubt, support staff member Janet Zang said, the best part of the trip is how people from all over the world get to see “beautiful Colorado.”

Zang and her husband, who live between Golden and Lakewood, have been involved with Ride the Rockies for several years.

They’ve met all sorts of interesting people — couples who ride together, families who live in different states and meet in Colorado for a week, and people of every age group.
