Colorado residents ages 70 and older are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, but public health officials are struggling to scale that operation up as quickly as possible.

Douglas County hospitals and clinics are finding several struggles in the vaccine rollout, including limited supply and communication barriers.

“Online has been easiest to set up (appointments) but that’s inadequate for this population,” said Kaitlin Wolff with Tri-County Public Health Department.

Douglas County is moving forward on finding a new way to deliver public health services to its residents by 2023 but has not determined a specific path forward or how much it will cost.

In a Jan. 25 news release that was approved by county commissioners, a spokesperson said this desire for change was brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The COVID-19 pandemic revealed to the board of Douglas County commissioners that the time to evaluate and seek a different solution to public health services of a county this size has come,” the news release states.

“Commissioners are quick to note that what the service delivery model will look like and cost is in the beginning phase of being discovered.”

Maria Volker, a Highlands Ranch High School teacher, said shifting from the current remote learning to hybrid learning should wait until teachers can be vaccinated, something that may not happen until March.

“The kids are learning so much better this semester because they have gotten used to (remote learning) and the teachers have gotten used to it,” she said. “I have found much more success remotely. I never thought I would say that.”

Volker called the district’s first semester, mostly conducted in hybrid learning, chaotic. She had to quarantine twice. Her students also were in and out of quarantine. Then the district announced a switch to full remote learning to finish the semester amid the pandemic’s third wave.

She wants students to have more consistency and feels like she can reach more of her students through full remote learning. Although they are not in-person, she can gather her entire class on a screen and help them socialize that way, she said.

The 61-year-old is also nervous by the emergence of new mutations in the virus.

“Can I get any more scared? Are we now guaranteeing quarantine because it’s much more infectious?,” she said.

Ethan Reed, 17, is a senior at Legend High School who joined several district students during the Jan. 19 board meeting in advocating against a return to hybrid learning.

Reed told Colorado Community Media his concern is twofold — that any in-person learning continues to pose health risks during the pandemic and that hybrid is less effective than remote learning.

In hybrid learning, he accomplished little during students’ independent learning days, he said, and felt like he learned less compared to full remote or in-person.

Reed also worries the introduction of a new, more transmissible strain of the virus in Colorado could lead to more spread within schools. He expects any in-person learning could cause a rise in cases and wor-

ries that will force the district to pivot plans again, sending students back once again to remote learning.

Reed called social distancing in high schools nearly nonexistent, saying it’s proven difficult to keep students three or six feet apart.

“I know quarantines are going to be happening and popping up quite a bit,” he said.

Hybrid learning

For Taylor Witte, a 14-year-old sophomore at Mountain Vista High School, hybrid is the best route until the district can return to in-person learning. The prospect of ending the semester in remote learning is breeding pessimism among students, she said.

Remote education has its drawbacks too, she said.

“Being on a screen for seven hours consecutively and then being assigned work for hours on end,” she said.

High school education is dependent on the experience, she said, like being able to do labs in-person for a science course.

Hybrid learning offers more structure, and some in-person learning is better than none, she said. She understands there are health risks amid the pandemic but also trusts the district’s sanitizing and cleaning protocols, she said.

“I think that given that the pandemic has been in effect for this long, we have to be willing to at least semi-normalize ourselves to the circumstances,” she said. “If restaurants are able to be open, then I think education should be prioritized.”

Revised quarantine guidelines, which now require 10 days in quarantine compared to the previous 14 and can release people who test negative sooner than that, also opens the door for hybrid, Witte said.

“Overall I think students on the secondary level are just looking for a high school experience, even from an education perspective,” she said.

Interim Superintendent Corey Wise also has advocated for a return to hybrid, although the board of education on Jan. 19 decided to break with his recommendation and keep students in remote learning through at least early February.

Wise said the district would be able to sustain hybrid learning until March, when teachers are expected to be vaccinated. The superintendent has also said consistently the district does not believe schools are sources of significant spread in the community, and that most exposures came from outside buildings.

Returning to in-person

Joyel Chambers has spoken at several board meetings urging a full, in-person option for families.

Her son Joey, 17, is a junior at Douglas County High School and in the severe special needs program.

Level yellow could be weeks away Post-holiday disease spike appears to taper off, but counties’ data still in red zone

In mid-December, businesses across Colorado saw state officials throw them what appeared to be an extra lifeline with the arrival of the “5-Star” program to allow them to operate with expanded capacity if they followed stepped-up COVID-19 safety protocols.

More than a month later, in some counties, that extra boost hasn’t materialized. And higher capacity for 5-star businesses may not arrive for weeks, one local public health leader for Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties says.

Gov. Jared Polis’ unexpected announcement in late December that all of Colorado’s “level red” counties would move to level orange restrictions rendered the 5-Star program temporarily irrelevant, causing confusion for business owners and local governments.

The 5-Star program allows qualifying businesses to follow restrictions that are one level less severe than they otherwise would need to based on their county’s level on Colorado’s color-coded COVID-19 “dial.” Before Polis’ announcement, businesses in red counties expected to get the OK to operate at the looser orange restrictions by earning 5-Star certification, which involves following strict coronavirus-prevention protocols.

Polis’ move of red counties down to orange sparked the possibility that 5-Star-qualified businesses could now operate at even morerelaxed level yellow rules, but that proved to be out of reach for most places across the state.

“I think it was very confusing and especially for counties that had received the approval for the 5-Star certification program or counties that were preparing to apply,” said Jennifer Ludwig, deputy director of Tri-County Health Department. “It really put us in this strange space.”

The state’s COVID-19 dial is the set of restrictions counties must follow based on local virus spread. Level red, a relatively new addition that took effect Nov. 20 in metro Denver and other areas of the state, banned private gatherings and indoor dining at restaurants, and tightened capacity limits at some types of businesses. Red is the second-highest level next to purple, a stay-athome order. Eventually, more than half the state’s 64 counties operated in level red.

Amid pushback from some counties and businesses against the level red restrictions, the state rolled out its 5-Star State Certification Program, modeled after a system Mesa County had “pioneered and has successfully run since the summer,” ac-

When capacity limits are expressed as both a percentage and a total number of people, businesses must use whichever number is fewer, according to the state’s website.

• Restaurants: Changes from 25% capacity or 50 people to 50% capacity or 50 people, whichever is less.

• Offices: Changes from a 25% capacity limit to a 50% limit. Remote work is “strongly encouraged” under both the orange and yellow levels.

• Gyms/fitness centers: Changes from 25% capacity or 50 people indoors to 50% capacity or 50 people, whichever is less.

• Indoor unseated events and entertainment: Changes from 25% capacity or 50 people to 50% capacity or 50 people, whichever is less.

The differences between levels become more pronounced as counties, or 5-Star businesses, move further down the dial to levels blue and green. cording to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The first step to increased business capacity under the program was for counties to apply for approval from the state public-health department.

After that, businesses in approved counties still must apply for certification and have their buildings inspected — and generally must follow requirements such as daily symptom checks for employees, recording customers’ names and contact information to support contact-tracing, and opening windows to maximize airflow, among others.

Amid the scramble for some local governments and businesses to apply, the blanket move to level orange came as an abrupt reshuffling of the process.

Some thought: “`Businesses were opened (further) in level orange, so what’s the benefit of 5-star?’ It caused a lot of confusion,” Ludwig said. “I do think people felt that, ‘Why are we going to have the dial if we’re not going to follow it?’”

The COVID-19 dial public health order — the document that outlines how the dial works — does give the state public-health department flexibility in choosing to change a county’s level, Ludwig noted. A county’s level usually depends on local rates of new cases, how many COVID-19 tests come back positive and the trend in hospitalizations.

But “CDPHE reserves the right to move counties one or more levels more quickly as circumstances warrant,” one part of the public health order says.

Getting to level yellow

Citing improving virus trends, Polis on Dec. 30 announced he told the state public-health department to move counties from red to orange effective Jan. 4 even though many didn’t meet requirements for the orange level according to the dial system.

Starting just before that announcement and continuing after it, the state saw a spike in the rate of daily new COVID-19 cases.

Asked whether the recent uptick was due to holiday gatherings or the move to level orange, Ludwig said “it was probably a combination,” noting that “we had Christmas and New Year’s and restaurants opening back up for dine-in.”

The State Joint Information Center, which takes questions for the state public-health department, said there “isn’t any evidence at this time that moving counties from red to orange contributed to any significant increases.”

The tide may be changing again: Since Jan. 9, the seven-day average case count has trended downward, the Joint Information Center said on Jan. 20.

But the recent upward turn in data put the benefit of 5-star certification further out of reach for many counties. Although the state manually moved counties to level orange, counties still must meet the orange requirements

in earnest before 5-star certified businesses can operate one level lower — at level yellow — according to the state public-health department.

Counties should meet the orange marks for local rates of new cases, also known as a county’s “incidence rate,” which is measured over two-week periods. They also need to meet thresholds for percent of COVID-19 tests come back positive and the trend in hospitalizations. Incidence rate and the test-positivity rate should be sustained for seven consecutive days, according to the Joint Information Center.

For orange counties hoping for business activity at yellow restrictions, that means tamping incidence rates down to 350 new virus cases or fewer per 100,000 people.

In Douglas County as of Dec. 30, that rate was still too high at 398, but with cases and hospitalizations appearing to improve, the county was expected at the time to hit the mark within roughly a week.

Trends took a different turn. As of Jan. 19, Douglas County’s rate sat at 436, according to Tri-County data. Arapahoe posted a 491, and Adams sat at 492.

Jefferson County sat at 383 and Denver at 448, according to the state’s website.

And although nearly all of Colorado is operating in level orange, the majority of counties — including Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas, Jefferson and Denver — still sat in red territory based on incidence rate. As of noon Jan. 20,

Broomfield and Elbert counties’ 5-star businesses were operating in yellow restrictions, according to the Joint Information Center.

Those appeared to be the only such counties, according to Colorado’s COVID-19 website.

But Tri-County Health’s area — Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas — is on the right track, Ludwig said.

Asked when 5-Star-certified businesses will have low enough metrics get to operate at yellow, Ludwig said, “I think we’re several weeks away,” adding that TriCounty’s area may hit the mark sooner if residents adhere to coronavirus precautions well enough.

“Since (early January), all three of our counties have been coming down at a really great pace,” Ludwig said. She added: “We did not have as big of a post-holiday spike as expected.”

The Tri-County area saw “a huge decline” in the number of businesses applying for 5-Star certification after counties were moved to level orange, Ludwig said, but the area has since seen a “slow and steady” trickle of applications.

Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, Jefferson, Broomfield and Denver were among the counties approved for the 5-Star program, but Adams was not, as of Jan. 20.

Revert to red may be unlikely

Although many counties still show level-red virus trends based on incidence rate, health officials appear unlikely to move counties back to red restrictions unless the trends take a severe turn.

“I think it would have to get significantly worse,” Ludwig said. “And if numbers started to increase at a dramatic pace in which we were very nervous or we started seeing hospitalizations increasing to a point of not having ICU (intensive-care unit) capacity, I think the state health department would be having conversations about what needs to take place.”

Asked about possibly moving metro Denver counties or others back to red, the Joint Information Center said: “We need to find the delicate balance between protecting public health and doing what we can to provide much-needed economic relief — we know that economic hardships also cause poorer health outcomes. We will work closely with local public health agencies and will make decisions based on what best protects public health.”

Asked whether the dial system’s benchmarks for incidence rate should be changed and whether the levels don’t accurately reflect what restrictions ought to be, the center’s statement said: “Throughout the pandemic, we have updated policies based on new information and data available to us. Counties were moved from red to orange to provide much-needed economic relief and because we believed we could do so while also protecting public health. If we see a significant increase or decrease in disease transmission, hospitalizations and positivity rates, we will evaluate next steps.”

Living the Dream brewery makes beer benefiting Backcountry The wheat beer can be purchased on tap or in a can

The staff at Living the Dream Brewing Co. has developed a new beer, benefitting the Backcountry Wilderness Area in Highlands Ranch, that they hope is the perfect brew to enjoy during or after outdoor adventures.

The Backcountry Wilderness Wheat is “like sunshine in a glass,” said Emily Hutto, a spokesperson for Living the Dream.

Ten percent of all sales of the beer, which is on draft and canned at Living the Dream, will go directly into the Backcountry Conservation and Education Fund.

The Highlands Ranch Community Association’s Backcountry Wilderness Area, which makes up 13 square miles of Highlands Ranch, is a dedicated conservation area in the southern part of the community. The Backcountry Conservation & Education Fund was formed with the

goals of wildlife habitat conservation in that area and environmental education, said Lindsey McKissick, outreach coordinator for the wilderness area.

“They put our mission on the back (of the can),” McKissick said. “Now, anyone who picks up a six-pack and turns the can around has a second to look at what our mission is.”

Much of the nonprofit’s work goes toward fire mitigation, noxious weed treatments, maintaining water resources for wildlife and education programs for the community.

“We’re really lucky to have small businesses like Living the Dream here backing us,” McKissick said.

“Because it makes a difference.”

The local brewery has partnered with the nonprofit since it got off the ground in 2017, with Living the Dream hosting a fundraising event every second Thursday of the month that benefits the Backcountry.

Douglas County School Board votes to continue remote education

After an hours-long debate, the Douglas County School Board broke with a recommendation from its superintendent to launch hybrid learning the week of Jan. 25 and instead voted to keep middle and high schools in remote education through at least early February.

The Jan. 19 decision came in light of strong pushback from classroom teachers, who had advocated against a hasty return to any in-person learning and called hybrid learning “a failure.”

Directors voted 5-2, with Krista Holtzmann and Kevin Leung dissenting.

The board directed interim Superintendent Corey Wise to provide another update on the district’s ability to begin hybrid learning at their Feb. 2 board meeting, with a potential launch on Feb. 8.

Wise’s recommendation had been to start hybrid learning for secondary students on Jan. 25. He said hybrid learning allows for more “active time” between students and teachers because they can spend two days a week together in classrooms.

Schools would also be better able to monitor students’ mental health during the ongoing public health crisis, he said.

took him out of the classroom twice last semester and once this semester.

With the various disruptions, Chambers said Joey has not had a full two weeks of in-person instruction since August. Teachers did “a fabulous job” of trying to continue Joey’s education during quarantine but it still proved ineffective, she said.

“He doesn’t learn anything in that environment,” she said. “If he is not able to learn in-person he is not getting his education.”

Chambers also believes a full, in-person model can be carried out safely under state guidelines. She wants the district to compromise by allowing a full remote learning

Wise said repeatedly there will not be a perfect solution to secondsemester learning as the district is facing an onslaught of starkly different opinions regarding how to educate students during COVID-19.

There also will not be a perfect time to switch models, he said.

Wise pointed to survey results that asked teachers if they felt ready to follow the district’s former plan of returning to hybrid learning by Jan. 25. The district received 1,761 responses.

On a scale of 1 to 5, 31% of respondents rated their readiness at a 5, about 24% rated it at a 4, 22% at a 3, 11% at a 2 and 13% at a 1. Wise said readiness to go hybrid will differ by school.

Board President David Ray scrutinized that survey based on teacher feedback during public comment.

“It almost feels like we’ve asked the wrong question,” he said.

“Whether you are ready or not is one question. Whether it’s effective is another.”

Kallie Leyba, president of local teachers union Douglas County Federation, said those results were misleading. Teachers were told

the decision to return to hybrid learning was already made and the survey asked if they felt ready for the transition, not if they wanted to return to hybrid learning, she said.

Wise confirmed the district surveyed educators about the previous plan — returning to hybrid — and if they were ready for the transition.

The district would need to continue asking teachers how to improve hybrid, he said.

Numerous teachers spoke during public comment urging directors against returning schools to hybrid or in-person learning before vaccines are available for educators, which is unlikely until March.

Educators felt they were spread thin managing both in-person learning and students learning at home when the district held hybrid learning first semester, teachers said.

Student engagement and attendance were also lower during hybrid than in remote, they told directors.

“I have never worked so hard for so little,” Castle View High School teacher Jessica Hunziker said.

Some teachers believed remote learning would reduce disruption to learning because students would not be moving in and out of quarantines or forced to suddenly switch learning models if COVID-19 cases rise.

Remote education would provide students with consistency, teachers said. It enables them to connect

with students daily and help cohorts socialize with one another.

Several students also spoke to directors, urging the district against returning secondary schools to hybrid learning.

Leigh Walden, a senior at Castle View High School, said recent weeks have proven the most consistent, most effective and the least stressful for her this year.

Legend High School senior Ethan Reed said hybrid was difficult on students because they covered less material and did little schoolwork on independent learning days.

There have also been consistent calls at school board meetings from parents who want full, in-person learning, continuing Jan. 19.

Parents of students with disabilities or individualized education plans urged a return to in-person learning and said other models do not provide equity to their children.

Other parents said remote education is harmful to many students’ mental health and pales in comparison academically to in-person instruction. Some suggested giving families two choices — full in-person instruction or full “eLearning,” the district’s online learning option during COVID-19.

“I’m happy that (teachers) are able to fool themselves into thinking the situation is better,” one Castle View High School senior said.

As for hybrid, Chambers said some in-person learning is better than none. Although she understands it’s difficult for teachers, she said, she believes it’s better for students than remote.

“I think they need to come up with a plan tomorrow, today, have an emergency meeting and put it in place immediately,” she said.

Calls to reopen schools have also spurred talk of recall efforts.

Castle Rock resident Nate Ormond announced an open invitation during public comment on Jan. 19 for people to join a virtual town hall discussing a recall of board members.

Ormond told Colorado Community Media his group plans to recall four board members — Susan Meek,

Elizabeth Hanson, David Ray and Christina Ciancio-Schor. The directors could not be reached for comment.

A district spokeswoman provided a statement from those board directors, saying the board’s focus will remain on students as directors work with district leadership to implement “the most consistent, effective, sustainable and safe educational delivery possible for our students” amid the pandemic.

“We have not received notice that this effort has been officially recognized. However, we are fully aware that emotions are running high with regards to the best educational delivery for our students,” the statement said. “We will continue to listen and consider all diverse perspectives (students, staff and parents) while adhering to public health guidance.”

Ormond would need to gather a

total of 80,000 signatures, or 20,000 for each board member. He has publicly pledged $100,000 of his personal funds for the effort but estimated his group will need to raise roughly $1 million to pursue recalls of all four directors.

Reopening schools is not the only issue driving the effort, but it was a significant one, he said. Ormond said board directors had the summer to plan for reopening schools fully but continue showing a “broad lack of leadership.”

The virus is deadly for at-risk groups and poses a legitimate health concern, but the state has issued sufficient guidelines to mitigate risks, he said. Echoing Wise’s comments, Ormond said there is not data showing schools are superspreader sites.

“For whatever reason they just can’t seem to put together a coherent and executable plan,” he said.

the county would stay with the agency until January 2023.

The county’s Jan. 25 statement followed an announcement at a Town of Castle Rock meeting six days earlier. At the meeting, the town’s staff said they had learned that the county “will proceed” with a separate Douglas County health department by January 2023, said David Corliss, town manager.

“It’s my understanding that the county, in 2022, next year, will budget funds to get that all started,” Corliss said at the meeting. “They obviously will have to hire an ex-

In order to secure a vaccine, residents must make an appointment before showing up to these locations. While some residents have found all appointments filled when trying to sign up, Wolff said persistence can be an effective method to secure an appointment.

“While most things like a flu shot can be obtained at your own primary care office, the supply of COVID vaccine is just much more controlled,” she said. “That’s why when people call their doctor, almost

no primary care facilities have the vaccine right now.”

In order for a vaccine site to be approved to distribute the inocula-

tion, the site must meet a variety of qualifications.

“We intend to expand the number of sites,” Wolff said.

Tri-County is also offering a mobile vaccine team specifically for residents who have transportation challenges such as those in rural areas or independent living facilities.

Tri-County asks for patience as they work to increase the scale of vaccines and to regularly visit their website for more information, Wolff said.

As of Jan. 25, more than 25,000 Douglas County residents had received at least one of the two required vaccine doses, according to data from Tri-County. That’s almost 7% of the adult population in the county.

That’s not necessarily what the county’s new public health services will look like, however, according to the spokesperson for the county. One option that has been discussed is the county not formally being a part of Tri-County but still contracting services from the department, said Jennifer Ludwig, deputy director of the agency.

“It is something that has been discussed and I think it could be a possibility,” she said. “That isn’t typically how we do business. It would be a big change.”

At the Jan. 19 meeting, Castle

Rock town councilmembers discussed their interest in forming a municipal health deparment but ultimately decided it would not be cost effective. The council voted instead to write a letter requesting that the county expedite its withdrawal from Tri-County and asking for the town to have a role in the governance of a new county health department.

The county is working with TriCounty — which also serves Adams and Arapahoe counties —on the process of finding new health services, Ludwig said.

“We’ve always understood that we would be exploring this in 2021,” Ludwig said. “I am anticipating that it will take a good part of this year to do a comprehensive analy-

sis in three counties.”

She believes a plan will begin to be implemented in 2022. So far, TriCounty has had “a couple of meetings” with staff representatives of each of the three counties they represent.

“We haven’t even mapped out a plan or process,” she said.

There is not a timeline in place for when the county will complete its analysis and decide what course of action it will take, according to the county spokesperson.

Ludwig said it appears that the commissioners’ interest in pursuing a new delivery of services continues to be a desire for local control.

“I still believe that’s the biggest reason,” she said. “We’re not taking it personally.”

New drive-thru restaurant to offer fast, fresh fare

A California-based restaurant focused on providing fresh, healthy food has set its sights on Highlands Ranch for its first ever drive-thru location.

Sweetgreen, which already has two locations in Denver, plans to open its store at 9215 South Broadway in Highlands Ranch late this year, according to a spokesperson.

“It’s all about meeting customers where they are and creating an integrated experience designed for an on-demand world,” according to the spokesperson.

The restaurant uses an app-based ordering system to provide customers with food. Even before COVID-19 and the accompanying recommendations for social distancing, more than 50% of the company’s orders

came through that app.

The drive-thru format builds upon that behavior and makes it even easier by allowing guests to access Sweetgreen without having to leave their vehicle, according to the spokesperson.

Onsite ordering is available as well.

The menu includes several seasonal and warm bowls along with salads and custom bowl options.

Items include the crisy chicken salad for $11.95, the fish taco bowl for $12.50 and the garden cobb salad for $10.95.

The drive-thru location will have outdoor patio furniture for those who want to eat on site, rooftop solar panels and windows revealing the kitchen and food preparation.

The company, founded in 2007, has more than 100 other locations. The restaurants create their food from scratch.

Faith leaders discuss ‘opening people’s eyes’ to racism

Across the country, demonstrations over the past several months buoyed up a conversation about race and unequal treatment that protesters say still runs rampant in the lives of people of color.

A pertinent question for a nation of many faiths: Where does religion fit into the conversation?

Five Colorado religious leaders gathered in a virtual live talk on Jan. 17, discussing everything from the Black Lives Matter movement to Asian Americans experiencing discrimination because of COVID-19 to how to faith leaders can wade into the challenging space of addressing racism.

“For Buddhists, one of the most important things is to look at the self,” said Rev. Diana Thompson, a Kaikyoshi minister at the Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temple.

If you’ve been called racist, “you need to just sit and listen — you need to be with them, you need to understand the perspective that they’re coming from,” Thompson said.

“We see self-reflection as the beginning of our social engagement,” Thompson said. The talk was put on by the nonprofit Colorado Humanities.

Worshipers should ask: “Where did we come from, or how did we come together?” said Kamel Elwazeir, president of the Islamic Society of Colorado Springs.

“If we can agree that the creator created us from clay, from dirt, and that we all belong to Adam, then we are all connected, and there is no” difference between one another, Elwazeir said. “It is considered a sin in Islam and talk down to (someone) or look down on him because of skin color.”

Rev. Joan Bell-Haynes, executive regional minister of the Central Rocky Mountain Region of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, brought up her organization’s effort to “eradicate racism within each (part) of our church.”

“Our concern is based in our theology that all people are created in God’s image, and that is the image of humanity, not one race or another,” Bell-Haynes said.

The local faith leaders touched upon

the Black Lives Matter movement, which opposes “state-sanctioned violence” against Black people, along with “anti-Black racism,” according to its website.

Adrian Miller, executive director of the Colorado Council of Churches — an organization that aims to work “together for justice” in the Christian community — referred to the “All lives matter” response to the Black Lives Matter movement.

“When you say, ‘Save the whales, nobody says ‘all fish matter,’” Miller said.

When some began attributing COVID-19 to Chinese people, Thompson said a member of her temple was called a “COVID (expletive)” at a grocery store. Thompson also lamented M former President Donald Trump’s rhetoric regarding the coronavirus but argued that conversations about social issues shouldn’t break down by party affiliation.

She knew of older generations who refused on principle to vote Democratic because it was a Democrat who put Japanese Americans in internment camps during World War II, Thompson said. But some in the Asian community said Trump’s presidential race was the first time they had voted Democratic since the 1940s, she added.

“We can’t say that just because you are this political affiliation, you’re a piece of junk because things are far more complicated than that,” Thompson said.

How to lead faith congregations in conversations about race also came up in the discussion. Bell-Haynes asks those in the faith community to inquire about what racism looks like in their own community context.

“Some of them may say, ‘I don’t have experience with racism.’ Well then … who are the people being marginalized?” Bell-Haynes said. Worshipers should be helping others “to open their eyes that there are people in our own communities that are being treated inferiorly.”

Colorado Humanities, a nonprofit, provides educational programs about topics such as history, literature and religion, according to its website.

The discussion was the third event in the nonprofit’s “Changing the Legacy of Race and Ethnicity: Conversations for One America” series aimed at driving a discussion about the legacy of race in America.

Roxborough man charged in connection with insurrection Patrick Montgomery, 48, posted photos from siege to Facebook, authorities say STAFF REPORT

A Roxborough-area man is facing federal charges after allegedly participating in the insurrection inside the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6.

Patrick Montgomery, 48, faces one charge of knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building without authority to do so, and a charge of violent entry and disorderly conduct Montgomery on Capitol grounds.

If convicted, Montgomery faces maximum penalties of one year in jail and/or a $100,000 fine on the first charge and six months in jail and/or a $5,000 fine on the second charge.

Montgomery was released from federal custody following a court appearance on Jan. 19. His next hearing is scheduled for Feb. 2.

Montgomery is the fifth Coloradan charged in connection with the Jan. 6 insurrection that saw supporters of President Donald Trump storm the Capitol in objection to Joe Biden’s win, leaving five dead.

Three tipsters notified federal authorities after seeing photos and posts referencing storming the Capitol on Montgomery’s Facebook page, according to an affidavit filed in federal court.

“We stormed the Senate … opened those Chamber door (sic) for Transparency!” Montgomery wrote in one post, along with a photo taken inside the Senate chamber.

Other photos and posts from the

Facebook page show Montgomery either traveling to Washington or participating in the “Stop the Steal” protest outside the Capitol objecting to Biden’s election to the presidency, according to the affidavit.

“I’m not a scared cat or running from anything,” Montgomery wrote in an email exchange with one tipster, the affidavit says. “Im (sic) so deeply covered by the best Federal Defense lawyers in the country in case you chicken (expletive) cry boys don’t want it takes to defend our freedom from these corrupt politicians.”

Montgomery will be appointed a public defender in the case.

Another Facebook user posted a photo to Montgomery’s page taken from inside the Senate chambers during the riot, asking if a man in the photo was him. Montgomery responded, “Got nothing to hide …”

“I didn’t storm the castle violently,” Montgomery wrote in an email, according to the affidavit.

“My group was let in peacefully by the police we were talking to with respect. We came a[n]d left peacefully before the anarchist and Antifa showed up breaking (expletive) and being hoodlums.”

FBI officials have said there is no evidence “Antifa” participated in the riot.

Montgomery deleted the posts referencing the Washington protest and riot on Jan. 7, according to the affidavit.

Montgomery is the owner of Pmonte Outdoors, a hunting guide

services company, according to state records. Photos from his Facebook page show him on many big game hunts, posing with dead animals, including water buffalo, jaguars and lynx.

Montgomery’s criminal record includes guilty pleas to two charges of driving under the influence, driving while ability impaired, hunting without permission, criminal mischief, and multiple charges of driving with a suspended license.

Though Montgomery’s next hearing will be held in Denver, further hearings will likely be held in Washington, D.C., according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The same goes for Facebook and Instagram and any others I don’t QUIET know about.

DESPERATION Sooner or later, everyone on Twitter apologizes for something. I know I wouldn’t be any different.

I’d say something that was “tone deaf.” (I see the words “tone deaf ” Craig Marshall a lot.)

Smith At first, I’d try to defend what I said, then I’d make up an excuse for what I said.

Then I’d apologize.

It would go something like this: “I want to apologize to the State of Texas and all Texans. What I said about Texas and Texans was tone deaf. I know that now.

“This will not define me. However, I don’t know what will, and maybe

this will define me.”

Perhaps there are plenty of good reasons to have a Twitter account, and they offset all of the negativity I keep reading about.

If I did have an account, I know just what I’d do. I would be up in the middle of the night tweeting exactly what I thought of musicals. “Hamilton.” “Cats.” “Mamma Mia.” For or against? Little Miss beauty pageants, the NRA, the Second Amendment, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, peanut butter, Scientology, chocolate chip ice cream, Quentin Tarantino, motivational speakers, televangelists, situation comedies, Comic Con, Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, the Easter Bunny.

My mailbox would explode, implode, spit and fume.

Last week I had a nightmare like no other: I was a contented Douglas County high school art teacher but the principal, Mr. Kafka, decided it was my turn to teach a new course.

“American Patriotism.”

I begged and pleaded: “No, not me. Not now.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR We must agree on civility

Events over past weeks and months have raised concerns and anxiety across our country. After each incident there have been sanctimonious cries of disdain and calls for reprisal. In every case there is one side who will try to rationalize the violence and disruption and an opposing side who will cast it as the epitome of evil and lawlessness.

There is no righteousness on either side. Not in those who encouraged and then lionized the riots over the summer, but condemned similar actions recently. Nor in those who sermonized about law and order when condemning the “social justice” demonstrations, but said little when their colleagues conducted themselves in similar lawless behavior.

We excuse lawlessness under any number of noble rationales, but all fly in the face of a nation ruled by law and order. We have now taught our citizens that the only way to really get your message heard and addressed is to rise up and act out — riot, destroy, even injure or kill.

I call on all of us to take a serious look at the state of our nation. If one wants to talk about systemic ills facing our nation, this needs to be at the top.

This is not a partisan issue that will be solved by blaming “them.” It is an issue that will require all parties to SEE LETTERS, P11

new hair shirt hanging in the closet.

If anyone thinks “We’re all in this together,” they haven’t been paying attention.

Not wanting to stoke further divisions among the citizenry, I am going to try to sit on the fence for a while. Travel the road’s middle. Try to appeal to every man, woman and child. It can be done.

“Offend no one,” will be my motto, my newest tattoo.

I will greet everyone with a smile.

But how will they know I’m smiling behind a mask?

Good question.

The chances of a makeover are practically nil. I have been disputatious since I was a child; unlike my sister, who never complained about our mother’s spaghetti sauce.

Hope and encouragement, love and forgiveness

ecently I was asked about some of the best advice I have received over my career. As I considered my response, I thought about some of the great business minds and strategists who provided guidWINNING ance. I paused for WORDS a moment before answering the question. I wanted to make sure that my answer would reflect how I chose to live my life.

The answer I gave was this, “The best advice Michael Norton I have received is to provide hope and encouragement to all and to offer unconditional love and forgiveness to everyone.” This was a business interview, and I could tell that the gentleman who asked the question was caught off guard.

My instinct was right because he tried to clarify that his question was more about business advice and not personal advice.

Pausing one more time, I

thought about the response I had provided, “Provide others with hope and encouragement and live with unconditional love and forgiveness.” There was a pause on his end, so I asked if I could clarify what I meant and why I believe it was still the best advice I had ever been given personally, professionally, and spiritually. His response came quickly, “Yes, please connect the dots for me.”

Beginning with hope and encouragement I shared that early in my career I was fortunate enough to have worked in a culture of hope and encouragement. From the CEO on down, including my manager, all worked with the spirit of lifting each other up. There was hardly any turnover on the team. And since we know that people don’t leave jobs, they leave their bosses, this was so unique that I knew that I wanted to emulate it in my own career and in my life.

Wondering if it was the right approach for the company, the answer is yes, they were successfully acquired.

The attitude of gratitude was

abundant. And as I received promotions, I was then responsible for the productivity and care of those on my team. Rule #1 for me was a commitment to creating a culture and environment based on the foundation of hope and encouragement. If that did not fit with anyone on the team, they were encouraged and free to find success elsewhere.

“OK, this makes sense in that context. But I’m curious, tell me about love and forgiveness in the workplace,” the gentleman continued.

“Let’s not forget that we are talking about unconditional love and unconditional forgiveness that succeeds at home and at work.” That’s important because oftentimes we try and place rules around both. As we discussed love, I wanted to make sure that he understood that I was not speaking of romantic love, I was speaking about a different kind of love. A love based on appreciation, respect, honor, and a willingness to come alongside each other in the good times, wins,

Our children are suffering academic, mental, and social/emotional harm from remote learning. The DCSD superintendent recently acknowledged a “significant slide in grades” is taking place. Nationally, mental health-related emergency room visits for kids are up 25-30% this past year.

Yet the science says in-person learning does not increase COVID spread. The CDC says schools are one of the safest places for children. Charters, private schools, and nearby public-school districts are proving that in-person schooling

can be done safely for children and teachers.

So what do we as parents do?

In the near term, we should continue being the voice of our children to the school board — emailing them and speaking at board meetings.

We can also take advantage of public school choice via open enrollment (which includes charter schools and other innovative options) — a short-term action that

can deliver benefits next school year and beyond.

A third (longer-term) thing we can do is stand up for our children in school board elections later this year — voting for people who will listen to science, to the families they serve, and who put our children’s education first. Those are the types of leaders that our children deserve.

Traveling poet, buskers share words of love and music in the age of COVID

A

small desk, an antique typewriter and some space on Denver’s 16th Street Mall are the tools Colorado native Devan Kingsford needs to arouse some pretty strong emotions.

With a few taps on the Remington mobile’s keys, he creates unique poetry on demand for strangers passing by.

“I love doing this. I have an English degree, so I’m probably going to end up teaching at some point,” said Kingsford. “But for now, I’m fine just writing poetry for strangers.”

Up the street, Peter Olschner and Kyle Lang are two young street musicians performing soulful jazz tunes and trying to preserve downtown Denver’s rich history of street music.

“We don’t have a band name because we just started jamming together,” said Olschner. “We both love playing music with other people.”

It was a cold January day on the mall and it was bare with masked people enjoying entertainment, restaurants and shopping to escape COVID quarantines. COVID-19 has presented some challenges, especially for performers and musicians. The pandemic took away Lang’s job, sending him to the streets to play.

“I used to teach percussion in public schools around Colorado and after the pandemic shut down extracurricular activities, I was kinda lost for a bit,” he said. “It’s been great getting back into it, though.”

Olschner said the pandemic had a positive impact on playing his music because he was able to still earn an income.

“I would not have discovered my love for busking if I had a traditional gig opportunity. I’ve been able to continue to be a performer despite the situation surrounding the pandemic,” he said.

As for Kingsford, the typewriter poet, the pandemic moved him away from his favorite spot in Larimer Square, but it has not slowed him down. He is still able to find locations to set up his typewriter.

“There was more walking space and, luckily, we have the 16th Street Mall, which is a pedestrian mall which gives you a lot more space. Without that extra space, I probably would not have been able to work. Also, it would not be at a safe distance,” said Kingsford.

Kingsford is a native of Colorado and received an English degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver. He has been

creating poetry for strangers for more than seven years on the streets of Denver and at special events. He does not charge for his poetry but accepts donations.

Kingsford started working as a poet at the Art Walk on Santa Fe Drive in Denver, standing on the street corner with a book of his own poems in his hand, shouting his creations to strangers.

He did that until a woman warned him that he should stop.

“You are gonna get yourself killed — there’s one thing people hate worse than poetry, is when it’s screamed at them by a stranger,” said Kingsford.

Kyle Lang was inspired to play drums as an outlet to express himself.

She suggested that he get a typewriter to choose a topic and write for strangers.

“I started doing that and never looked back. It’s incredible,” he said.

Crying and hugging

Kingsford’s poetry has touched many hearts with his words, none more than his own — sometimes in ways he has a hard time describing.

“You know, I can’t even imagine as a poet, I should have had a word for it,” said Kingsford.

A few years ago a woman approached him and asked for a

poem.

“She was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, and she had six months to live. She wanted me to write her a poem that made her not afraid of death,” said Kingsford. “I wrote her poem. Then we cried together and hugged, and then she left.”

“If possible, I used rescued wood from local trees to make small bowls, boxes and many other artistic wooden items,” said Bill Knoll.

He exhibits both photography and wood pieces with the Littleton Fine Arts Guild’s Depot Art Center, when it’s open — and serves as vice president for the organization, helping the volunteer organization function smoothly.

Knoll wrote that his father introduced him to this interest, as well as photography — both above and below water.

He and Guild member Tim Kathka exhibited their photography last year at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Highlands Ranch, which readers may recall.

And he has happily passed his interests along to children and grandchildren. He describes himself as “Husband, Father, Grandfather, Photographer and Woodworker.”

With eyes that find beauty as he makes his way through the world, “I try to look for subjects that define my interests and things in nature that others pass by every day and never see.”

His professional career was in electrical engineering and he retired after “designing and building community water facilities across the country.” He has widened his interests in nature over the years.

The aforementioned “under water” part relates to a passion for scuba diving — and photographing a whole other colorful world to be found beneath the surface of the water.

With other Guild members, he ex-

hibits images elsewhere in the community: at Smokin’ Fins Restaurant, Stanton Gallery at Town Hall Arts Center (where “It’s a Small World,” an exhibit of small works, is still open during box office hours) and at Nixon’s Coffee House in Englewood and at the Arapahoe County Justice Center.

We’ll hope the Depot Art Gallery will be able to open doors again soon, so one can stroll in and enjoy the art works in person.

We understand that photographer Peggy Dietz is assembling a new virtual member exhibit in the meantime — to open in early March 2021.

Hoping to make shopping small the next big thing Boutique curator mixes maker and mall culture to bring hipster cool to the suburbs

The economy has been battered almost everywhere by the COVID-19 crisis. Unemployment is high. Some retailers and restaurants have been shuttered.

But for Karli Millspaugh, owner of the Makers Market stores in the Southwest Plaza and Park Meadows shopping malls, the shutdowns and cutbacks caused by the coronavirus pandemic were a challenge she chose to meet head-on.

“Here’s the interesting thing about me: I don’t take no for an answer very well,” Millspaugh said.

She said when the pandemic hit she didn’t have a website, infrastructure for shipping, or anything, really, to help her navigate the online sales that would be necessary to keep her businesses afloat. But with 150 merchant vendors with booths in her stores and 28 employees counting on her, she had to dive right in, making things happen fast.

antiques and collectables, vendors sell artisan, handcrafted goods, with food, clothing, jewelry and everything in-between creating a vibrant, eclectic mix of items to attract shoppers. She said the concept is in line with the times, as social media and websites like Etsy spotlight shopping small and supporting independent craftspeople.

Millspaugh came to own the businesses through what the kids these days would call her side hustle.

“I actually started as a vendor myself, refinishing furniture and selling it at places like the Paris Street Market in Aspen Grove,” she said. “People starting asking about where my brick and mortar was, so I started researching places I could sell on a more regular basis.”

Millspaugh said she found a couple of small stores in Littleton that matched her concept, but neither were a great fit. She soon turned her attention to Unlisted Market in Littleton, got a booth, eventually offering the marketing and promotion skills she used in her full-time day job, to the owner.

Before long, she became a partner in Unlisted, and in 2019 took over ownership, changing the location and the name, to what is now, Curate, located in Centennial.

The Makers Market stores had been running since 2015, and Millspaugh took ownership of them in January of 2020, bringing this story back to where it started.

March 16, 2020, is a date Millspaugh remembers well. That’s the day she had to close her stores due to the COVID-19 regulations affecting nonessential businesses. Curate was closed for nearly two months, the Park Meadows Makers Market location was shut down for about 10 weeks and her Southwest Plaza location wasn’t able to reopen for almost three months — an eternity in the life of a retail store.

But thanks to her ability to roll with the punches the virus threw at her small chain of stores, Millspaugh has been able to survive, and even thrive, in the current atmosphere. Launching a program called Curate Care Packages allowed her not only to keep her rent paid, but just as important to her, to extend a lifeline to her merchant vendors.

The idea was simple — use her vendors’ merchandise to offer customers curated gift packages, with items specially chosen by Millspaugh. The care packages are offered at different price points and so far they’ve shipped more than 2,000 of them.

She said approximately 10% of her vendors have struggled to keep going, even as she was able to offer free or discounted rent during the shutdowns. But overall, business is good and there’s a six- to 18-month wait list to get a vendor spot in one of her locations.

Millspaugh’s husband, Brent, has even left his former accounting career to help her run the businesses full-time. It’s been so busy she long ago had to give up on her furniturerefinishing biz.

“My talent and skill set were needed in other aspects, to help make this business thrive for all of our vendors,” she said.

As for the future, Millspaugh plans to continue honing her curating skills, which include placing the right vendor in the right location, when a rare opening comes up, opening workshops to help people find their inner-artisan and figuring out the right marketing magic to spread the word to shoppers who want to support small, locally owned businesses offering boutique products they won’t find anywhere else.

“I love looking for new ways to approach things,” she said. “One of the vendors said he admires my ability to try new things to see if one will stick. I just can’t wait for more of those moments.”

portables because they are incredible,” he said. “It’s like a laptop. It’s small, the fonts are 10 points and I average from three to 16 lines. I only use little quarter sheets of paper to write my poems. So you can fit a lot of words.”

As far as personalizing each poem, Kingsford said he relies on the subject to get him started. Some people offer up their whole life story, others only give non-verbal clues.

“There are other poets who do this, and they have their methods.

I don’t like to ask a lot of questions, I don’t want to put words in your mouth or suggestions. I ask people to give me whatever they have at that moment,” said Kingsford.

Street musicians

Olschner plays guitar and Lang plays drums. Both have been playing music since they were children and have been playing together for a short time. Lang loves instrumental math-rock music, and Olschner loves jazz. So the plan is to form a jazz combo and do covers with popular tunes.

Olschner 24, was born and raised in Arvada. He attended Pomona High School in Arvada, learning choir and musical theater. Olschner went to Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, and studied philosophy and music.

He has been playing guitar since he was 16 years old and mostly earns income full time as a street performer in Denver and Boulder — supplemented by walking his brother’s dog for extra income.

Kyle Lang, 21, was adopted from Korea and grew up in Westminster.

He is studying psychology at Front Range Community College and was a music major at Metropolitan State University. He’s been playing drums for 12 years, which supplements his

regular paycheck from NAPA Auto Parts in Boulder.

Expressions and Guitar Hero

Lang was inspired to play drums to express himself.

“It’s another way for me to speak, and it gives me a creative outlet to express myself,” said Lang.

Olschner was inspired to play guitar by a music computer game.

“I grew up playing the game Guitar Hero 3 and I loved the soundtrack so much,” Olschner said. “I realized that I could play the songs on a real guitar if I practiced enough. When I was a sophomore in high school, my friend sold me his acoustic guitar with a buzzy string for $20, and I haven’t looked back since.”

He’d like to open a private lesson studio teaching students music theory and guitar techniques.

“I am working towards producing original music, music videos, and educational videos for the internet as another source of income down the line,” said Olschner.

Lang’s short-term goal is to finish his degree at Colorado State University. After graduation, he plans to start a career in counseling.

“My long-term goal is buying a Honda Civic type R,” said Lang.

Mall music

Olschner enjoys performing his music for people on the 16th Street Mall and the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder. The practice has developed him into an experienced performer.

“The people are very generous with their tips when they are enjoying the music. I love making cash tips, because it allows me to pay for my rent and my groceries as I continue to develop my career as a professional musician,” said Olschner.

Lang enjoys playing at the mall for a variety of people.

“Music always brings people together... I love the crowd, and I love being able to share my craft with others,” Lang said.

Bennet gets up-close look at Sandstone Ranch U.S. senator also filled in on I-25 Gap project’s progress during visit to county

U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet spent a recent morning visiting Sandstone Ranch in southwest Douglas County and learning about the 18-mile stretch of I-25 known as the Gap that is under construction.

“It’s really a fundamental part of doing my job,” Bennet said about of the Jan. 11 visit to the county.

Bennet — a Democrat who has represented Colorado in the Senate since 2009 — added that the idea for a recent conservation bill he introduced, called the Outdoor Restoration Force Act, came from a tour just like this.

“At Sandstone what stood out was the vision of Douglas County … to preserve that iconic open space so close to where so many people live,” Bennet said. “That’s a very, very rare thing to see in our country.”

Bennet was also briefed on construction progress for the portion of I-25 between Castle Rock and Monument. The Gap project was made possible in part by a $65 million infrastructure grant that he and former Sen. Cory Gardner helped secure in 2018.

“This is the result of a collaborative effort to fund this project,” he said. “It’s wonderful to have the chance to be on the ground and be briefed about how the implementation is actually going.”

Bennet learned that the project is, so far, ahead of schedule, with 6 miles completed and more than half of the paving finished.

“Everyone is focused on getting this thing done as fast as we possibly can,” said Shoshana Lew, executive director of CDOT.

Commissioners Lora Thomas and Abe Laydon, who accompanied the senator on his visits in the county, answered questions and added comments on the significance of the I-25 project.

Thomas, who was a state trooper from 1984 to 2003, used to patrol this section of interstate.

“In 1987 a state trooper was killed right at the county line … and I arrested the driver that killed him. And then just before this project started there were two more state troopers that were killed,” she said. “When I became a commissioner this became my

personal goal to get the funding to get this road done.”

She went on to explain 1A, the ballot item approved by voters in 2019 that allowed the county to move 0.18% of their 1% sales tax from the justice center to roads.

After the presentations, Bennet also spoke about the recent insurrection in Washington, D.C., where a pro-Trump mob occupied the U.S. Capitol for several hours.

“What we need to do in order to reject this is work together in a bipartisan way to be honest with the people we represent,” he said.

He added that he thinks it’s time for President Donald Trump to step down from office.

“I think that he is unfit for office and I just think we’d all be better off if he moved on,” he said.

Bennet added that he values his relationship with Douglas County, a conservative stronghold.

“I have treasured the working relationship that I’ve had with the Douglas County commissioners and the work we do together,” he said. “The fact that I’m a Democrat and they’re Republicans isn’t particularly relevant.”
