Douglas County commissioners hear school safety recommendations At least 40 school resource officers to cover county campuses

Numerous key questions remained unanswered following a July 16 meeting in which Douglas County commissioners heard formal recommendations for how to spend $10 million toward school safety, although the public got a closer look at how more than $3 million in ongoing funds are already being put to use.

The board had voted on May 28 to allocate the $10 million in one-time funds toward mental health and physical security in local schools. The decision came three weeks to the day after a shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch left one student dead and eight injured.

Commissioners had also approved more than $3 million in ongoing funds to add school resources officers in the county and a co-responder team to work with local youths.

“There is something at work bigger than all of us,” Commissioner Lora Thomas said at the July 16 meeting.

The board had formed two committees, one to research mental health resources and the other physical security.

The committees’ deadline was mid-July, giving the groups roughly three weeks to complete the task.

The groups’ presentations, given July 16 in Castle Rock, remained high level, careful not to divulge details of local schools’ current security and infrastructure. They didn’t want to inform anyone who might wish harm on students, said chair of the school security committee, Clinton Dorris.

The board did not finalize how money would be distributed to the school district or individual schools. Committee presentations also did not disclose the estimated cost of their recommendations.

curity and law enforcement to the types of radios first responders use.

The mental committee suggested several programs to provide students support, including assessments that gauge a school’s culture and mental health needs.

County commissioners said at the start of the work session they would not remark on the proposals that evening, a stance they maintained when asked for comment following the meeting.

They’d only received the committee reports that evening, and were still digesting the information, said Roger Partridge, chairman of the three-member board of commissioners. He called it the beginning of a lengthy process.

It was unclear exactly which, if any, of the recommendations would be in place by the school year’s start on Aug.

Committees present ideas to improve safety, mental health in schools

“We want to expedite this process but we want to do it in the right way,” Partridge said.

The July 16 meeting was a work session, typically held in a small conference room and sparsely attended by the public. But this time, dozens of community members, including STEM victims, attended.

“I don’t have all the answers, just as you don’t,” he said, adding he wanted to be part of the change and was pleased to see the SRO program being expanded. “We need to stop this devastation and we can do it.”

Partridge said work would continue in the coming days.

The board was scheduled to hold two executive sessions with the physical security committee and a public meeting with the mental health committee before the week’s end.

While commissioners mull how to spend the $10 million, they also heard how the funds for the co-responder team and school resource officers are being spent.

After several meetings, two committees formed to address mental health needs and physical safety in Douglas County schools presented drafts of their recommendations to the Douglas County Board of Commissioners.

Committee members, as well as Douglas County officials and a handful of parents, agreed that consistency and collaboration are key in tackling solutions to school violence.

“Commonality is a very significant thing,” Clint Dorris, chair of the Physical School Safety & Protection Funding Committee, said at the study session July 16 at the commissioners’ boardroom in Castle Rock. “The more that we can share data, the more that law enforcement can get a consistent feed.”

The committee, along with the Supportive Mental Health for Students Funding Committee, have been charged with with making recommendations on how to spend Douglas County’s onetime gift of $10 million. Stakeholders in the county recommended the committee members, which the commissioners appointed and include a mix of Douglas County School District representatives, experts in the mental health and security fields, and parents.

In three weeks, the committees used

data collected from research, interviews, visits to facilities and more to form their recommendations. Next steps of the process remain unknown, though a statement released from DCSD following the July 16 meeting says the district looks forward to continuing its partnership with the commissioners.

“We were pleased to see that the recommendations presented were complementary to, and consistent with, the best practices and researched-based resources that Douglas County School District (DCSD) currently has in place for physical school safety and security, and mental health for students,” the statement says.

Mental health committee Sarah Ericson, deputy district attorney and director of the Diversion Counseling Program at the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, presented the mental health committee’s recommendations, many of which list a menu of options.

The recommendations address a key point of data from the 2017 Colorado Healthy Kids Survey, which shows that 48 percent of high school students surveyed in DCSD reported what was called “a low commitment” to their schools.

Meet Andy Jones, school board candidate

Highlands Ranch resident Andy Jones is vying for a seat as Douglas County School Board director for District A, which comprises western Highlands Ranch.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Jones attended the University of Mississippi on a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps scholarship. The former Navy pilot has been a flight instructor for Jones United Airlines for 22 years.

Jones’ three children attended Platte River Academy in Highlands Ranch, and two of the three graduated from Mountain Vista High School. This fall, his youngest will be a senior at the high school.

Jones said he and his wife have been involved in their children’s education since the beginning. For three years, he served on the governing board for Platte River Academy, a charter school.

“We just find this is so important,” Jones said.

Jones is entering his third year on

DCSD’s District Accountability Committee, currently holding the title of co-vice chair. The committee collects feedback from individual School Accountability Committees, made up of parents, and advises the board of education on spending priorities.

His experience in helping bridge divides and strengthen collaboration in the district sparked his interest in running as a candidate, he said.

“We need to anchor on some good, solid governing principals that give our district, teachers and staff the stability that makes them look to the leadership and say, ‘I trust what they are doing,’ ” Jones said.

Jones’ priorities include safety and security, teacher retention and parent engagement. When it comes to safety, he points to his professional and military background.

“Every moment we fly, we are thinking about the safety and security of our passengers,” Jones said, adding, “I think I’ve got some skill sets that currently are not available on the board.”

What do the next few months look like for Jones?

“It’s going to be a lot of walking neighborhoods and meeting people at every opportunity.”

Meet Franceen Thompson, school board candidate

The May 7 shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch led Franceen Thompson to run for a seat as Douglas County School Board director for District C, which comprises eastern and southern Highlands Ranch.

Her daughter was a senior at the school when the tragedy happened.

Thompson “It had a tremendous effect on my family, my STEM family, my community,” Thompson said. “I just felt like I needed to do something.”

Thompson was born and raised in the Littleton area and graduated from Arapahoe High School.

She received a bachelor’s degree in finance from Lubbock Christian University in Texas and an MBA from Texas Tech University. She’s currently employed as a financial specialist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Her son and daughter attended

Legacy Point Elementary School, and her son spent a year at Sagewood Middle School before transferring to STEM when it opened in 2011. Her daughter followed.

Thompson has been involved in School Accountability Committees and served as chair of DCSD’s District Accountability Committee in 2012.

In 2011, she registered with the Colorado Secretary of State as a candidate for the Douglas County School Board election, but dropped out weeks later. Instead she opted to support candidates who espoused reforms such as pay-for-performance evaluations for teachers.

“I like reform,” Thompson said.

“I think the reforms were poorly implemented and that was the problem.”

Some of her priorities include school security, special education and career tech education.

What do the next few months look like for Thompson?

“I just really want to get out there and talk to parents and taxpayers,” she said. “I want to spend time in the community and listen.”

Three seats to be decided in school board election Two candidates are registered with the state; incumbents have not released their intentions

Douglas County School Board hopefuls have until Aug. 30 to file to run as a candidate for one of three open seats in the Nov. 5 election.

As of July 18, two people had registered with the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office seeking seats on the board: Franceen Thompson, a financial specialist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; and Andy Jones, who serves as co-vice chair on DCSD’s District Accountability Committee. Both candidates are from Highlands Ranch.

The seats of incumbents David Ray

(District F), Anne-Marie Lemieux (District C) and Wendy Vogel (District A) are up for election.

Whether one, two or all three of the incumbents will seek reelection is to be determined.

“I spoke with both Directors Vogel and Lemieux and believe we are at a similar place in being undecided about running for reelection,” Ray said in an email correspondence. “It is our plan to publicly make known our intent no later than mid-August.”

The Douglas County School Board has been in the spotlight since the 2009 election of a reform-minded majority of members, who espoused policies such as pay-for-performance

evaluations for teachers and a form of school choice that would later include a controversial voucher program.

For six years, supporters of the reforms held all seven seats on the board. They introduced new policies that, in the eyes of many, caused an exodus of hundreds of teachers and administrators.

A shift occurred in 2015, when sitting candidates who opposed the reform policies — Ray, Vogel and Lemieux — were elected to the board.

Two years later, the board added four more members who largely opposed the reform movement: Anthony Graziano, Kevin Leung, Chris Schor and Krista Holtzmann.

The board has since selected a new superintendent and put two successful tax measures on the ballot. Last November, for the first time in 13

years, voters approved a $40 million mill levy override and $250 million bond. The funds have been used to address teacher pay and capital needs.

What to know To be considered as a school board director, one must: • Be a registered voter of DCSD for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the election.

• Be a resident of the director district for which he or she is a candidate at the time of filing the notice of intention and supporting petition.

• Have not been convicted of, plead guilty or nolo contendere to, or received a deferred judgment and sentence for, a sexual offense against a child.

Douglas County Fair & Rodeo brings days of fun

The quiet Douglas County fairgrounds will soon spring to life, transforming from a place with largely empty parking lots and buildings to one brimming with carnival lights, live music, the sound of barns filled with livestock and the smell of funnel cakes and freshly cooked turkey legs.

The annual fair draws crowds each year, including children who show livestock, families who come for the chance to see farm animals, people who sew, bake and photograph 4-H projects, and spectators who simply enjoy seeing the creativity on display.

Whether people are actively involved in fair events or just there to enjoy the festivities, the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo aims to provide something for everyone.

Fair celebrations kick off with the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo Parade at 9:30 a.m. on July 27 in downtown Castle Rock. The full fair experience runs from Aug. 1-4.

Castle Rock’s Western Heritage Welcome Steer Drive takes place at 6 p.m. on July 26. Every year, cowhands drive a herd of longhorn steer and cattle through the heart of downtown Castle Rock in recognition of the area’s agricultural roots and the start of the fair.

Other noteworthy events include the Hometown Rodeo, during which Douglas County Fair & Rodeo Royalty are crowned. The event starts at 4 p.m. July 27. The carnival opens on Aug. 1 and runs daily, although hours fluctuate.

Plenty more is planned to keep people entertained in-between fair events. The fair is bringing in a world champion trick roper from Florida who will rope at various events and on the midway.

Fair organizers are also redesigning the fair’s marketplace, filling it with 4-H crafts plus the agriculture and floriculture exhibits, rather than commercial vendors selling items like windows, Spradlin said.

Livestock sale pays off for youths at fair Douglas County event reaches 60th anniversary

It’s not every day an entrepreneurial teen makes $20,000 from a single business transaction, but at the Douglas County Junior Livestock Show, that’s known to happen.

The event, which each year generates thousands for local youth to put toward college tuition, 4-H projects and to boost fair scholarship funds, will this year celebrate its 60th anniversary.

“The livestock sale is basically the pinnacle for the exhibitors, of their projects,” said sale director Phil Riesselman. “Everybody who has a livestock project in the fair, their goal is to get into the sale. Not everybody

The sale concludes a long week of prepping animals for the fair and entering them in the livestock shows.

Animals that place fourth or higher are entered into the livestock sale, which takes place the last Friday of

the fair. This year that’s Aug. 2. On average, the sale comprises 110 to 120 animals and roughly that many exhibitors.

The sale is broken into two parts — the first where all proceeds from an animal’s sale go toward the 4-H

exhibitor and the second where proceeds go into a scholarship fund.

Buyers are sometimes individuals and sometimes companies, and often bid an animal up to far more than market value. The sale committee collects 6% of proceeds to cover event costs.

Longtime volunteer Betty Thomas’ husband was in the first livestock sale in 1959. He sold his grand champion steer in the fledgling event, which at that time only included 18 animals.

The steer sold for $504. The grand champion steer at the 50th anniversary sold for thousands. In total, the 2018 Junior Livestock Sale generated $461,000.

“It’s going to be a really traditional fair look,” Spradlin said. “It’s going to be like the old-time fair.”

Other fair board members and 4-H participants said the fair is an important celebration of the county’s roots in agriculture. Although growth has changed the landscape in recent decades, the county was once a ranching and farming community.

“It does bring the community together, too,” said Bruff Shea, a former fair board member and past recipient of the Legend in Agriculture Award given by the Colorado Agriculture

When he wanted to start showing animals at the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo, his parents footed the bill his first year running. After that, paying for the livestock, their feed and other supplies was up to Summervill.

The money he makes during the livestock sale funds the next year’s 4-H animals. He shows sheep and poultry and is involved in 4-H at the county and state level.

Larkspur resident Dakota Potton, 12, and his sister Makenzie, 9, use proceeds from the sale to reimburse their mother for project supplies, purchase animals for the next year’s fair, and any extra proceeds go into college savings. e The 4-H exhibitors also try their hand at networking through the sale.

Throughout the summer they invite potential buyers to the sale and mingle with them during a dinner held the hour before start time on the day of the event.

“Last year our mom made little business cards,” Makenzie said.

The number one rule when handing the cards out to buyers? “Shake their hand,” Makenzie said.

Longtime fair volunteer Betty Thomas said it also allows residents from urban areas who don’t have ties to agriculture to learn about food production and the industry.

“Just to see where all the food in the grocery store comes from,” she said.

Spradlin believes part of the fair’s appeal is its size, that it’s not too big an event, estimating it would take a family about three hours to see most things the fair has to offer.

Franktown resident Dakota Potton, 12, said he’d take attending fair week over going to heavily-crowded theme parks like Disneyland or Disney World, where ride lines are long.

“You can make a lot of friends,” he said. “And you don’t have to wait (in program after college, which means he raises bulls that other farmers would purchase to breed their cows.

“It’s a lot of money to start a cattle breeding program,” he said. “It’s a lot of work to get into if you weren’t born into it.”

He plans to sell his stock and assets after this year to pay for college. He’s entered in 35 shows during the 2019 fair and is bringing eight animals.

Former fair board member Bruff Shea said the livestock shows and sale provide ample life lessons for the kids.

“In the real world you’re not getting anywhere near that kind of money,” he said, noting buyers bid more than market value. “But you learn how to budget your money and costs.”

He also recalled how the sale galvanized the community in past years when tragedy struck 4-H families — the death of a child in one instance and another accident that placed a child in a wheelchair.

Tell us about your background.

I grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, that’s where the New Mexico flairs come from. I moved to Las Vegas when I was 15 years old. The reason this place is called the Outpost is because I was a medic in the Army, and I wanted a name that went with that. People will see Outpost and think I must be a veteran... I went back to Las Vegas and worked with some of the best bartenders in the industry. I’m not the best, but I learned a lot from the best.

abian Valdez has a vision for one of Lone Tree’s hottest spots. The owner of the Outpost Eatery wants to turn his 50-seat gastropub, sharing a building with two other owners, where Southern Comfort used to be, into the city’s favorite hang-out spot.

Valdez, an award-winning bartender and former Army medic, opened Outpost in January and already has plans to keep growing if things continue the way they’re going.

“There’s nobody like us here, right now,” Valdez said. “I’m like no other place around here. I’ve niched myself so much.”

A gastropub, if you’re not familiar, is “a pub, bar, or tavern that offers meals of high quality,” according to Merriam-Webster.com.

To Valdez, quality is key.

His next project is opening the porch in hopes of making “dogfriendly Saturday nights.”

What do you want this place to be in the community?

I’m craft food and craft drinks. I’m all about experiences. Lone Tree has been missing that. I’m your neighborhood pub, but I’m also craft like crazy. My margaritas are fresh. We use lemon-lime juice fresh. We don’t have Bloody Mary mix, we make our own mix, we have a michelada mix we make in house.

What does it mean to be craft?

It’s fresh. We don’t use mixers. It takes a little bit longer and attention to detail to make these drinks, so consistency plays a part in that. You have to be careful you’re consistent too.

How do you keep that balance of quality food and a fun atmosphere?

There is a balance there. As far as environment, that has to do with the front of the house. Coming up to a table with a smile. I tell these (employees) to check their feelings at the door.

You’re on stage here. You’re always on stage. Even (the chef) is on stage.

How did you get into the restaurant business?

I started off as a dishwasher, 15 years old. None of my family has a restaurant background. I moved to Las Vegas with my mom when I was young. I walked into this place and they hired me as a dishwasher. Then I moved up to become a busser, then I went into the Army, then as a barback for Hard Rock Hotel. Then I went to work for a place called Panevino. Then I moved here and opened up the Range Restaurant in downtown Denver five or six years ago. Then, me and Paul (Nagen, head chef at Narrative in Cherry Creek) began winning awards.

He and I teamed up — it was just like “What’s the food? OK here’s a drink that goes with that. Let’s go into competition together.”

Academy takes in-depth look at criminal justice system Classes give participants chance to learn about functions of district attorney’s office STAFF REPORT

Residents who live in the 18 th Judicial District are invited to apply for the 2019 fall citizens academy, a seven-week program that explores different parts of the criminal justice system.

Each class explores the roles of various members of the office and gives students an in-depth look at what happens on a case from the time of arrest through post-conviction. In addition, attendees will explore functions of specialized units such as the special victims unit, the economic crimes unit, the cold case unit, crime scene investigations, county court and juvenile justice.

Students also will learn the intricacies of a jury trial.

Dinosaur dig wraps up near C-470 and Santa Fe Researchers unearthed about a third of a triceratops at construction site

Picture the scene: a muggy afternoon, 66 million years ago, on a mucky river delta. Crocodiles and turtles crawl among flowers and ferns beneath towering sycamores. On the river bank, a 30-foot triceratops lies dead, partially sunken in the mud.

Fast-forward to 2019. The river delta, now beneath Highlands Ranch, has yielded the bones of the dinosaur, long since fossilized.

A volunteer crew from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science wrapped up the dino dig in mid-July, and said they recovered about a third of the ancient three-horned herbivore.

The fossils — including portions of the dinosaur’s skull, ribs, hips, shoulder blades and backbone — are available for public viewing through the window of the fossil preparation lab at the museum, said fossil preparator Salvador Bastien, who worked on the dig.

pened upon the fossils in May, Bastien said, and invited the museum to excavate them.

The bones were scattered and scrambled in an area stretching across 50 to 60 feet, Bastien said, suggesting they may have been moved by the river or scavengers after the dinosaur died and decomposed.

The fossils were buried in sandstone and mudstone, suggesting the animal died in a river channel, Bastien said, and the remainder of the bones probably long since wore away.

Initial research hasn’t suggested a cause of death, which is extremely dif-

ficult to determine, Bastien said.

Triceratops were among the most common types of dinosaurs in the Cretaceous Period, Bastien said, which ended with the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

Though paleontologists are already well-acquainted with triceratops, “every fossil is rare, and each one has the potential to increase our understanding of ancient ecosystems and biology,” Bastien said.

Crews called it quits after finding no more fossils in a one-meter radius from those already recovered, Bastien said. It’s possible there are more

fossils to be found at the site, but “we don’t have X-ray vision.”

The fossils were brought to the museum wrapped in plaster and burlap, Bastien said. Next they’ll be painstakingly cleaned with hand tools like dental picks and toothbrushes.

Though the lab has many projects going right now, this one will be prioritized because of its interest to the community, Bastien said. It’s too soon to say if the bones will eventually be added to a public display, though they will become part of the museum’s collection.

Under Colorado law, Bastien said, fossils discovered on private land are the property of the landowner, so he’s thankful that Wind Crest decided to donate the fossils to the museum. He’s also thankful that construction crews realized what they found and bothered to tell the museum.

The discovery has been a joy for Wind Crest too, said Craig Erickson, the company’s executive director.

“The discovery and excavation of the Triceratops fossils on campus has been a thrilling experience for our residents and staff,” Erickson said in a news release. “It is our honor to donate these incredible artifacts to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for further study. We are grateful to the museum’s expert staff and the team at Brinkmann Constructors for their partnership in preserving this important part of Colorado history and sharing it with the greater community.”

Commissioners approved putting an ongoing $3 million toward more SROs in the county, but the funds are contingent on a 100 percent match from local schools, both public and private.

Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth presented on the county’s school resource officer program.

The sheriff ’s office already provides 11 SROs to local schools but is actively recruiting more for the coming school year. The department will add five SROs to middle schools, two to charter schools, and expects to convert seven school marshal positions into eight more SRO positions for elementary schools by December.

Additional sergeants and detectives will support the SROs, Nicholson-Kluth said.

The Parker and Castle Rock police departments each provide three resource officers to schools in their community.

Each department recently received council approval to add one SRO in the school district, bringing their counts up from two.

“Low commitment is considered a risk factor correlated to substance use, delinquency, teen pregnancy, school violence and dropout,” Ericson said. “This is why we must take action.”

The committee asked the county to provide funding for several countywide efforts, including the expansion of Text-a-Tip — an existing anonymous reporting service offered by the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office — to include a more comprehensive response to mental health tips.

The recommendation also asks for the creation of a navigator program for youths using Text-a-Tip to access funds for treatment by contracting with a community-based partner.

Other recommendations include: • Fund assessments in each school in order to understand strengths, needs and gaps in mental health and student safety.

• Fund programming including social emotional learning, mental health services, and suicide prevention and intervention, supported by the assessments.

• Fund an age-effective marketing campaign with the goals of raising awareness of Text-a-Tip and reducing stigma.

• Fund youth Mental Health First Aid training in all middle and high schools.

• Fund Trauma Informed Care training for school employees, parents and students.

• Fund Handle with Care, a traumanotification protocol, in every school.

“We understand that talking about mental health can be hard,” Ericson said. “We don’t always have the words to do it, but we want to let our community, especially young people, know that we don’t have to whisper when talking about mental health.”

While county commissioners lauded the presentation, some parents in the

The overarching goal is to keep people in a mental health crisis from going to the emergency department or jail and directly connect them with resources like treatment. The Youth CRT will work exclusively with school-age children and their families in the community and county schools. The cost of funding the team is $331,250.

“Those whose loved ones enter a new school year will do so knowing that something has changed,” Commissioner Abe Laydon said. “More is on the way.”

Dorris did not divulge specific costs associated with his committee’s recommendations.

Rich Payne, DCSD’s director of school safety and security, said the presentation reflected the district’s current practices.

He considered the committee’s presentation a “report card” for the district, he said after the meeting.

“The district allowed this group to come in and look at the stuff we have — we are talking about consistencies and nonnegotiables,” Payne said. “Our schools are safe.”

Payne pointed out that funds from a $250 million bond passed by voters last November are addressing security needs, such as cameras and interoperable radios across the district. But, he said, the process of implementing physical safety measures takes time.

“We don’t just throw money at something,” Payne said. “We have to make sure we use research-based programs and best practices.”

Some parents in attendance said they stand behind Payne’s expertise and his department’s oversight. The problem, they said, is school culture.

“I think my kids feel safe at school,” ThunderRidge High School parent Cathy Lees said. “But they don’t feel connected at school.”

RTD’s 50-year history builds path to future CEO says transit district considering new ways to get people where they need to go

tax. With that money, RTD began buying up the aging municipal bus systems that served Denver and its suburbs, such as Denver Metro Transit, Evergreen Transit, Northglenn Suburban and the Longmont Mini.

In 1994, RTD opened its first light rail line; in 2016 it opened its first bus rapid transit line and commuter rail line. This year, we launched the 61AV, an autonomous vehicle pilot program and FlexRide, an on-demand shared bus service where passengers have the ability to book a trip online. RTD has transformed transportation for the Denver metro region.

A lot can happen in 50 years, and that is definitely the case in the world of transit. In the Denver area, the Regional Transpiration District — which launched in 1969 — has seen its share of new technologies, groundbreaking ideas, unrealized dreams and work still to be done.

But a half-century of offering mass transit options to the metro area is no small feat — one RTD is celebrating all through this year.

We connected with Dave Genova, general manager and CEO of RTD, to discuss RTD’s past, its current achievements and its future challenges.

This interview has Genova been edited for brevity and clarity.

Tell me about the 50th year of RTD — how is RTD marking the occasion?

We started in February by rolling

RTD officially celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday, July 12, with a party on Wynkoop Plaza in front of Union Station.

The event featured RTD information,

food trucks, music, a program with speakers and other family-friendly activities. And there will be more to come as the year continues.

How has transit changed in Denver since RTD first started?

When RTD first started, there were several different transit agencies operating in the Denver-Boulder area. On Sept. 7, 1973, voters in what was then the seven-county district authorized RTD to issue $425 million in revenue bonds backed by a half-percent sales

What, if any, were some predicted transportation changes that never came about?

RTD reviewed a variety of transportation options and one that comes to mind is Personal Rapid Transit, which was similar to the then-popular attraction at Disneyland. In fact, consultants to RTD suggested Denver could be a test ground for Personal Rapid Transit. A 100-mile system of mostly elevated, “fixed guideways” was sketched in which driverless vehicles holding a maximum of 12 people would deliver passengers all around the metro area. Early dreams included an underground subway segment downtown.

Mixing business with friendship can work

ike me, you have probably heard this saying repeatedly, “Never mix business with friendship.”

You may have even had an experience that didn’t turn out so well when you tried to partner with a friend on a business endeavor or worked with a friend to help you do your taxes, provide you insurance, sell or buy your home, fix your plumbing, help you make an investment, or any number of other situations that went horribly sideways.

Let me ask this question, was it the friendship or was it the situation WINNING itself ? Was it the friendship or was it WORDS something else that went wrong? Did a third party have something to do with? Think about it for a moment.

And if you still believe it was your friend, perhaps we need to go back and define what friendship means or how we define our particular friendships.

Friends, especially close friends, deal with disagreements and conMichael Norton flicts throughout the friendship. But the friendship is so deep and trusted that if something goes wrong or sideways, they always know how to get beyond the specific incident or circumstance. In most cases anyway.

Over my career I have made tremendous friends. Clients who have become friends, and partners who have become friends. It has worked the other way as well, friends who have become clients and friends who have become partners. I have been hired by friends and I have hired friends. And, luckily for me it has almost always worked out well.

Some will say that one might make concessions for friends or treat them differently. Some may argue that it’s hard to talk about money or ask for money from a friend. And still others will stand behind this concept that a client cannot become a friend because you will never be willing to raise your price or ask for more money — the preference being to preserve the friendship rather than tell them that there has been a price increase.

So, here’s the difference, a friend is a friend at all times. A friend is someone who will tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. A friend is someone you can trust with any project that they are capable of doing.

A friend is someone who will stand by you when prices go up or down, when business is good or bad, and who is there for the wins and the losses.

It’s when we ask our friends to do something that we know is not in their sweet spot, not their strength, that’s when things go wrong. We set them up for failure. It’s when we don’t set proper expectations regarding performance, that’s another huge area where we often fall short and the friendship can be placed at risk.

You see, I would rather go into business with a true and trusted friend. I have done so a few times and we are still friends today. I would rather hire a friend who has the experience, qualifications, and track record of success to do the job, who knows I will have their back, and who will always have mine. The next time you ask your friend to fix your car, sell your house, or go into business together, make sure you both define your friendship first. Then set proper expectations, putting trust and your friendship before any business, and always understand what happens should anything go wrong.

It’s not really free The headline reads “DCSD Offers Free, Full-day Kindergarten This Fall.” Then, the first paragraph goes on to explain the miracle of House Bill 12-1262. Free? Really? DCSD is a partition of local government, which gets a huge portion of its funding from the state. And where does the state get its funding?From the taxpayers. This same sugar-daddy governor, while handing out free stuff, is also about to do his best to jettison TABOR, which will turn over more tax dollars to out-of-control state government. There is nothing “free” about this all-day kindergarten. Colorado Community Media could do itself a favor by providing a more thorough look at things like this, instead of being a shill for state and local governments.

Renaissance Festival offers an Larkspur event that stretches back 43 years draws 200,000 people during annual run

hen Christopher Baker wanted to propose to his wife, Rosie, he knew exactly where to buy the ring.

Both he and Rosie attended the Colorado Renaissance Festival in their childhood and teenage years.

They’ve continued the tradition into adulthood and now share it with their 3-year-old daughter, Athena — while wearing the engagement ring and wedding bands they bought from a festival craftsman.

The event is a special place to them, the Central City couple said, and buying their rings there added to the sentiment behind them. They also love the culture of fantasy and escapism created by the event.

On an early July afternoon, the couple sat at the festival wearing head-to-toe costumes with clothes they’ve acquired from event vendors over the years, looking back on their time within the village walls.

“It’s the only place in the state where you can walk around and see knights rubbing shoulders with storm troopers,” Baker said.

Sarah Periat of Commerce City agreed. The festival creates a place for people to get away from their daily lives and enter what feels like another world. She and her family spend weeks creating costumes. She personally sewed the dress she wore to the festival on July 7, when she dressed as an elf.

“We come every year. We like to dress up,” she said. “I think it’s the fantasy. People like to get out of their element.”

The family-owned-and-operated event has been running for 43 years, mostly at its location outside Larkspur. Jim Paradise is vice president and director of marketing while his father, Jim Paradise Sr., is the owner.

Paradise said it’s festival-goers like Periat and Baker who help add to the event’s allure, People aren’t required to come in costume, and in fact just a small percentage do, Paradise estimated. But they blend in with hired entertainers and make the fantasy more authentic.

There’s much more that goes into making the festival a long-standing success, he said.

“I think what makes it so appealing and gives us the opportunity to have it running for 43 years is the uniqueness of the event itself,” Paradise said.

Oak Ridge Boys to harmonize at Hudson Gardens Signature vocals will entertain crowd as part of summer concert series

ummer concerts fill the grass slope at Hudson Gardens in Littleton through the season, and at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 3, it will be with the country, gospel and patriotic a capella harmony of the Oak Ridge Boys, a longstanding quartet that travels across the country year-round. The group brings a trail of awards and three decades of charted singles putting its distinctive sound to a huge repertory of songs. There have been 12 gold and three platinum albums, plus one double-platinum single.

“We traditionally work a lot,” said bass player Richard Sterban, adding that they had just finished recording their annual Christmas album in their “hot and humid” hometown, Nashville, on the day before we spoke. “We’re on the road about 150 days a year, but the only long trip is our Christmas tour … Usually it’s three days out, three days in, then three days out again.” From mid-November on they’re on the road — not around much at Thanksgiving.

Sterban, who began his singing career as a 6-year-old soprano on his New Jersey Sunday school, went on to sing bass with groups that included a spell with Elvis. Then, an invitation came from the Oak Ridge Boys, who were seeking a bass. He wanted to be part of a group, with the accompanying “family feel” that such a connection brings, so he left the big-time stage appearances. He tells his story in an autobiography called “From Elvis to Elvira,” cowritten with Steven Robinson.

The group’s new Christmas album was produced by Dave Cobb, whom Sterban praised enthusiastically as a major Nashville name. Having his name on a project, such as the group’s recent “17th Avenue Revival,” is really important. Songs from that album will be a good part of their Hudson Gardens program, he added. Cobb “wanted us to go to church — return to our roots a bit,” Sterban remembers. And, Cobb chose most of the songs on the recording, “It took us down roads we musically hadn’t visited.”

It took old-time rockabilly, Elvis, Ray Charles, gospel songs, “marrying them with new material. (“He also had some contempt for other songwriters …”) Cobb has access to young songwriters, so the Oak Ridge Boys said “we’re in your hands.” He selects most of the content for an album.

One song they will certainly perform is the old hymn, “Amazing Grace.”

They are known for singing it at George H. W. Bush’s funeral in 2018, but the connection between the Oak Ridge Boys and the Bush family is

Saying he had to go to China and would miss the concert, he asked if they could do a mini concert then and started naming favorite songs — he was a fan of the band. We got to know him and his wife and went, with our wives, to visit them in Kennebunkport, Maine. We sang for them and he always requested `Amazing Grace’ and in advance, asked us to promise to sing it at his funeral.

“We were in Spokane, Washington then and flew in a private plane to Houston, took a quick shower and sang. Then, we returned to Kennewick, Washington, for a concert that night … We were able to keep our promise.”

What, aside from “Amazing Grace,” will they sing at Hudson Gardens?

“We make up our own set list each day, Sterban said. “Joe Bonsall makes a set list up daily when we’re on the road, after a look at social media. He sends it to us and to the band.”

“We have 23 Number One country records,” Sterban adds. “Every night is different — a promoter may want a longer or shorter show … for example, a casino will want it shorter so people have plenty of time

The afternoon sun was hot, and the trails dusty as dozens of men and women gathered at the start line of the Rattler “Pure Venom” mountain bike race in Bear Creek Lake Park, on July 10.

“My goal is to just pass one person,” said Rob Ford, the only entrant in the “fat bike” category.

A nearby rider laughed and said he’d probably be the one to pass.

“Try to kick my chain off when you pass though, so I have an excuse!” the rider joked.

Then the race began, with wave after wave of bikers out to conquer the 17.8-mile singletrack course.

At the lap/finish line emcee Steve Oberembt called out each racer’s name with enthusiasm, as a crowd of supporters and earlier competitors cheered, and enjoyed complimentary beer and hot dogs.

Teens and younger, many of whom had competed earlier in the afternoon, milled around the finish line, occasionally cheering on a parent as they passed by, or trying to answer the emcee’s occasional quiz to win free prizes.

Oberembt, who said he’s seen the Rattler series grow from 105 participants to more than 285 in the four years it has operated, says he loves seeing the local mountain bike community in action, “just to see people come together, smile, laugh have a good time promoting a healthy sport.”

On the course, the mood is cordial.

“Passing on your left, thanks!” says the leader of a pack of women, all wearing the same team jersey.

“Ughuuuugh,” says a distinctly out of shape journalist who was experiencing a calf cramp generating mindaltering amounts of pain. At some point, Ford on his fat bike does indeed pass him by.

The Rattler series features several competition categories, ranging in age from the “8 and under” riders who race around a 1.3-mile course, to the senior division, with special divisions in between for different skill levels and different types of bikes. On July 10, the youngest racer was 4 years old, and the oldest was 57.

“The range is terrific,” said Oberembt. “You’ve got your 8-year-old future Olympians out here racing around and having fun, alongside some of the top athletes in the state,

Thomas Herman to name one.”

Herman, a Lakewood resident, won the Grand Traverse 41-mile mountain bike race between Crested Butte and Aspen last year, and took first place in this year’s Bailey HUNDitO, before winning the Men’s Open division on July 10.

Oberembt says there’s one man responsible for the Rattler series.

“It’s totally Dave’s creation — Dave’s work of art,” he says, referring to Dave Nuscianisi.

According to Nuscianisi, who is currently a mountain bike coach for Highlands Ranch High School, the racing series started initially as a “more low-key” event to help get area high school mountain bike racers some experience before state competition.

For his part, Nuscianisi says the growth of the cycling series has been one of natural progression.

“All I’m doing is hosting a party and everybody shows up,” he said.

“It’s a friendly group of people, very supportive, that’s why it’s grown like this.”

Part of the credit for the race series’ popularity also belongs to the scenery and trails of Bear Creek Lake Park, and the city of Lakewood’s Regional Park Supervisor Drew Sprafke, according to Nuscianisi.

“They’ve been so easy to work with,” said Nuscianisi. “They’re the best land managers we’ve worked with.”

That’s saying something, because Nuscianisi has expanded into organizing a junior racing cup in Bailey Colorado, and a three-day mountain bike stage race in Winter Park.

Nuscianisi says he hopes the sport, and the race series continues to grow in popularity.

“The neatest thing,” he said, “is just getting to see more kids get out there and get into this sport.”

Denver Water proposes removal of lead pipes Plan will be submitted to EPA for approval in August

Denver Water is looking to tackle lead in consumer drinking water head-on — by removing all the lead pipes in its system.

The utility organization recently announced a new three-part plan to remove the pipes in its service area over the next 15 years. Jim Lochhead, the CEO and manager at Denver Water, said that in order to get ahead of health concerns with lead in the water, “the ultimate solution is just removing these lines altogether.”

The organization will present the plan to the Environmental Protection Agency in August, and expects a decision by the end of 2019. Lochhead estimates the plan will cost between $300 million and $500 million depending on how many lead pipes there are.

In addition to replacing an estimated 50,000 to 90,000 lead service lines, Denver Water will distribute water filters to customers who may have lead lines, so they can get lead out

COURTESY OF DENVER WATER of their drinking water before their lines are replaced. The utility will also increase the pH levels from 7.8 to 8.8, in order to prevent lead from leaking into the water.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment asked Denver Water in March 2018 to begin the process of adding orthophosphate to its system by 2020. Similar to increased pH levels, orthophosphate creates a coating on the inside of pipes and reduces the likelihood of lead getting into water.

program manager for the department, said the state looked into putting the additive into the system after lead levels in Denver Water were too high in 2012. Falco added that several utilities in the state are already using orthophosphate.

“It showed that (Denver Water’s) current corrosion control that they use might not be optimized,” he said.

There are not dangerous levels of lead in the water currently. Denver Water collects tens of thousands of water samples annually, Locchead said. EPA rules require that action

is taken if more than 10% of homes tested have lead levels above 15 parts per billion. The only time this happened in Denver Water was in 2012.

Since most of the lead lines are customer owned, Denver Water does not know which homes have lead and which do not — and many customers don’t either. Homes built before 1951 are the most likely to have lead pipes, as Denver Water began to allow galvanized and copper pipes in construction in 1949. Copper pipes continued to have lead solders to connect the pipes. Denver Water banned the use of lead pipes in 1971, according to its website. Lochhead said the utility would use this information, as well as testing and permitting data they have collected to help determine which houses need line replacements.

“It’s a number of different ways to kind of sleuth out where we think they’re going to be,” he said. “Over the course of 15 years, we’re hopeful that our methods for identifying these lines will continue to improve.”

Denver Water’s policy is to remove lead pipes when it comes across them.

Around 1,200 lines are replaced every year. The organization also offers free water testing to homes. Denver Water serves around 1.4 million people in metro Denver.

Removing the problem Denver Water also had concerns about using orthophosphate. On one hand, Lochhead called adding chemicals to drinking water a “delicate balance.” Denver Water wants to ensure its product is clean and safe to drink, but also tastes good for customers.

“We would prefer to avoid adding new chemicals to our drinking water,” he said. “We like to produce a really good product.”

Its research indicated that while orthophosphate would reduce lead levels by 74%, it would take 60 years to do so.

The organization also had concerns about investing in adding the additive to its water, when other organizations such as the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District would have to later remove orthophosphate from its system in order to prevent it from going directly into waterways. Neighboring water utilities in Highlands Ranch and Parker in the south, and Adams County and Thornton in the north, connect to Denver Water’s service network. Those entities would also have to remove orthophosphate from their systems.

A spokesperson from Metro Wastewater said the company was not taking questions at this time because the plan is still pending EPA approval.

“This issue presents an opportunity to collaboratively implement a comprehensive regional plan that prioritizes the full spectrum of public health factors,” reads a statement on the Metro Wastewater website. “By making smart infrastructure investments, like those Denver Water has recommended to CDPHE, we can

maintain the top-quality drinking water we enjoy today while targeting and removing the source of lead contamination to permanently fix this critically important public health issue.”

Lochhead estimated that implementing orthophosphate into the Denver Water system would cost between $500 million and $700 million, as well as annual costs to purchase the additive.

Denver Water also had concerns about the environmental impact orthophosphate would have. Many of the organization’s customers use water for their lawns, which ends up in local streams and rivers. Under the right conditions, this could cause accelerated algae growth. Falco said that it often takes time for those impacts to become apparent. Smaller utilities have not seen issues yet, but Falco added that Denver Water is one of the largest water providers in the state.

Denver Water worked with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, as well as Metro Wastewater and environmental groups to come up with an alternative solution, and developed the lead pipe removal plan. If approved, it will be the largest removal program in the United States.

If the EPA does not approve the plan, Denver Water will begin implementing orthophosphate into its system in March 2020. Falco said that Denver Water has already been working with Public Health to prepare for implementation next year.

Lochhead said he thinks that the removal plan is safest. Instead of mitigating the issue through additives, the pipes are replaced altogether.

“The water that we have in our system in safe. It’s a plumbing issue in the system that needs to be corrected,” he said. “We think what we are proposing is more protective of public health.”

Strikes for Kids plans the sixth annual Orange and Blue Bowling Bash to raise money for the organization’s backpack giveaway program, which provides backpacks filled with school supplies to famlies in need.

Registration cost is $200 and includes two hours of bowling and shoe rental for up to six bowlers, a pizza and pitcher of soda, two hours of all-you-can-play arcade game cards, an event shirt and swag bag, a group photo with Will Parks, and raffle and silent auction participa-

tion.

In addition to providing 250 backpacks to the Boys and Girls Clubs Denver Broncos branch, Strikes for Kids will invite 75 kids out for an evening of arcade games and food while handing out backpacks.

The Strikes for Kids backpack program, presented by Dollar Days, provided about 2,000 backpacks will with school supplies in 2017 and 3,500 packs in 2018. In 2019, the goal is to provide more than 4,000 backpacks nationwide.

Strikes for Kids is a national charitable organization that organizes bowling, softball and golf events.

The organization partners with professional athletes to allow fans to mingle with professional athletes for an afternoon of fun while supporting a charitable cause.

What would you say the focus of RTD should be for the next 50 years?

RTD is embarking on the process of reimagining RTD through our Transportation Transformation work which will kick off in July.

RTD strives to continue to keep its finger on the pulse of the citizens in the Denver metro area, offering new services to better meet the needs of our tech-savvy and rapidly growing population. We will be developing the mobility plan for the future of the Denver metro region.

The Denver metro area has obviously seen some massive growth in recent years. Has ridership grown at a similar rate?

We have been experiencing increased ridership on commuter rail, bus rapid transit, and so far this year on our fixed route bus network. Nationally, ridership has declined across the country mainly on bus services. There are a variety of reasons: more people are working from home and they are using transit less and using their cars more and automobile access is better than ever before. RTD will be spending the next two years looking at all of the services we provide and how we can improve them through our Transportation

Car seat safety checks offered at free event Mothers of Multiples Society brings in certified technicians to inspect seats and provide information STAFF REPORT

Certified child passenger safety technicians will offer free car seat checks and discuss proper use of a car seat, including installation, daily use, and car seat selections at a free car seat safety event in August.

The semiannual event, hosted by the Mothers of Multiples Society, is Aug. 17 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 500 Fairgrounds Drive in Castle Rock. No appointment is necessary. Drop-in times are between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Car accidents are the number one cause of death in children ages 13 years of age and younger, according to a news release. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “for every fatality, roughly 18 children are hospitalized and more than 400 are injured seriously enough to require medical treatment.”

More than 90 percent of car seats are not used correctly, the release said, which is why MOMS hosts the event.

Whether you have an infant car seat, a convertible car seat, or a booster seat, MOMS invites you to meet one-on-one with a certified technician to ensure that your child is safe.

“Only certified child passenger safety technicians are trained in the most current child passenger safety practices,” Erin Brill, certified technician and MOMS member, said in the release. “Child passenger safety is not part of standard training for medical professionals, law enforcement, fire departments, etc. A certified child passenger safety technician is the best resource for car seat information.”

Kidney donor credits workout for successful recovery Dan Riordan completed fitness challenge three months post-surgery

In early 2018, Dan Riordan learned that his father’s health was rapidly deteriorating due to a chronic kidney disease. That fall, when his father’s kidney functioning dropped to just 13%, Riordan knew what he had to do.

The Highlands Ranch resident was one of four siblings to offer to donate a kidney.

“I was the match, essentially,” said Riordan, 44, a fitness buff who has always enjoyed running.

After six weeks of recovery and three months easing back into training at Orangetheory Fitness in the Central Park development of Highlands Ranch, Riordan successfully completed the Dri-Tri, a fitness challenge consisting of a 2,000-meter row, 300 body weight reps and a 5K run.

Orangetheory Fitness, a high-intensity, interval-training workout franchise, sponsors the biannual event, and funds raised go to a local charity.

Riordan credits the structure and tight-knit community at Orangetheory Fitness for his success: at his six-month checkup, his remaining

“They said essentially, it’s because you are in shape,” Riordan said, sitting on a piece of workout equipment

Originally from Wisconsin, Riordan moved to Highlands Ranch four years ago to pursue a Ph.D. in curriculum

and instruction at the University of Denver. He also works at the university as an adjunct professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning Sciences.

On Dec. 27, his father’s birthday, Riordan underwent surgery to remove his kidney at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. His father’s health has since drastically improved.

“The siblings joke that it’s tough to beat that birthday gift,” Riordan said.

The two-hour surgery left Riordan with a major incision cut through his stomach wall. For the next six weeks, his only activity was walking.

Then he returned to Orangetheory Fitness. The workout uses body monitors and colored zones to track peak performance. Coaches offer one-onone assistance throughout the hourlong class, which combines cardio and strength training.

“Initially, it was tough to see how far my fitness level had regressed, but I could see I was making progress,” Riordan said, adding that he knew the Dri-Tri would be a great motivator.

Two months ago, he and his wife welcomed a baby, another reason to keep his physical health in check.

Riordan’s story embodies the mission of Orangetheory Fitness, said McDougall. The coaches are trained to safely help all people — even those with physical limitations — reach their fitness goals.

“We are a family,” McDougall said, “and we are a community.”

Survivors of Nazi horrors to give talks VOLUNTEERS Holocaust survivor and son of Dutch resistors to share stories STAFF REPORT

Two people with ties to the Holocaust will share their experiences in the Littleton area in the first week of August in unrelated events.

On Aug. 6, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at the Aspen Grove shopping center will host a screening of “Prosecuting Evil: The Extraordinary World of Ben Ferencz,” a documentary about the life of the last surviving prosecutor from the Nuremberg Trials, where dozens of Nazi war criminals were tried after World War II. “Ferencz went on to advocate for restitution for Jewish victims of the Holocaust and later for the establishment of the International Criminal Court,” according to a news release.

“His fight for justice for victims of atrocity crimes continues today.”

A post-film discussion will feature Sara Moses, a survivor of Nazi concentration camps who now lives in Denver. Moses

Entertainers don’t merely perform from one of the grounds’ 10 stages but walk among the crowds in full costume and character to engage attendees. The royal court, including the festival’s king and queen, parade through the streets while families sip drinks and snack on turkey legs.

The permanent structures meant to resemble a 16th-century magical village are routinely remodeled, and the village as a whole was roughly one-third its current size at the event’s start years ago, Paradise said.

He believes the village in particular sets the festival apart from nearby, smaller Renaissance festivals.

“The difference and the advantage we have is we have created a very nice village for people to come out and really get away. We don’t have just tents in a parking lot or tables set up in a field,” he said.

The event, which this year runs on Saturdays and Sundays from June 15 to Aug. 4, draws an average of 200,000 people annually and employs approximately 500 people.

For the Town of Larkspur, a community of slightly more than 200 people, that’s a big deal, said Mayor Marvin Cardenas.

“It brings us almost half a million dollars alone in sales tax revenue,” he said. “For years the town has been supported by the Colorado Renaissance Festival. They’re a huge eco-

Other revenue generators are limited in Larkspur, Cardenas said, although he expects pending projects like a campground and a travel center will boost the sales tax once the developments open.

In the meantime, Cardenas said, the renaissance festival continues to

support the town financially, provides jobs for residents and nearby entertainment.

“It’s a huge benefit to the community.

We’re so lucky to have them and I hope they never go away,” Cardenas said.

The festival shop where Baker bought his wife’s engagement ring more than five years ago is still there.

Owner Da-oud Thompson, while standing under a sign reading “Wedding Bands,” said the Bakers are not the only couple to buy engagement rings there. He’s known families that came to him for two or three generations.

“That really feels good,” he said.

Thompson travels the country to sell at various festivals and has come to the Colorado Renaissance Festival for 35 years. It’s one of his favorite shows, he said.

“The people are interesting. They come dressed in crazy outfits,” he said. “I think we’re all devoted to making people smile and having fun.”

Speed, stubbornness lead to wins at Mile High Nationals ‘I love this race track,’ says Greg Anderson after he notches his 92nd win

reg Anderson is very fond of Bandimere Speedway.

Anderson, the 58-year-old from Mooresville, North Carolina, drove his Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro to a first-place Pro Stock finish for his second consecutive victory at the Dodge Mile High Nationals, held July 19-21 at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison.

He was one of four professional Mile High Nationals winners.

Steve Torrence continued his dominance of the National Hot Rod Association Top Fuel division by winning his eighth race of the season.

Tommy Johnson Jr. was the Funny Car champion as he won for the first time at Bandimere after getting to four previous finals in different classes at the track.

Andrew Hines secured his sixth Pro Stock Motorcycle victory of the season.

“I am very stubborn,” said Anderson, who notched his 92nd career win with his 10th straight win over Matt Hartford in the finals. “You ask yourself will I or can I win again. Father time is tough, It’s not that you can’t have a life with some of these guys out there, it just becomes more difficult over the years to do it every time. I am still very blessed to be able to do this. It’s hard to win but we put it all together here without a doubt.

“I love this race track. I love Bandimere and love racing a mile high. It seems to be the best car I have each year. I consider this my best chance to win each year. I knew that coming into last year’s race and going into this year’s race. It was probably my best chance but that doesn’t mean I don’t have other chances. It feels wonderful to get the job done. Everybody did a great job.”

Torrence and Clay Mullican both struggled with traction but things have been going Torrence’s way this season as he won the Top Fuel finals thanks to a superior elapsed time.

He has already clinched a spot in the Countdown to the Championship.

He tied legendary Don Garlits with 35 Top Fuel career wins.

“It’s very humbling to be mentioned in the same sentence with that guy,” Torrence said. “He pioneered so many things and he was the greatest. When you have a car as consistent as ours, sometimes you benefit. I relish these moments because they don’t last forever.”

“I never imagined this season would be like this,” said Hines. “Lately I’ve been in the right place at the right time. I’m going to ride the wave. I just hope that when the Countdown comes, I’m as strong as I have been this year.”

Torrence was the top qualifier in Top Fuel. On July 19, he recorded a 3.738 elapsed time with track record speed of 330.31 mph, which was the first 330 mph run in Bandimere history.

Richard Freeman, Elite Motorsports owner, earned the top qualifying spot in Pro Stock in his 2016 Camaro. Freeman got into the car when regular driver Rodger Brogdon couldn’t commit to drive in the NHRA’s Western swing, which includes Bandimere.

Freeman was eliminated in the second round of the eliminations by Anderson.
