Places like Monk and Mongoose Gourmet Coffee in Lone Tree are what Keith Simon calls “the holy grail” of a planned development. The coffee shop in RidgeGate has become a popular spot for residents and area employees.

The executive vice president and director of development for Coventry Development, the main developer of the RidgeGate community, said it’s those types of smaller, local businesses that he hopes to bring in abundance to Lone Tree’s budding center, just east of I-25.

New buildings in RidgeGate, like the Charles Schwab parking garage, will feature surrounding retail and restaurants. The Kiewit building, coming to RidgeGate in 2021, will also feature smaller spaces for retail and restaurants.

“We had hoped for little sprinklings of retail among the community,” Simon said. “It’s good to see those kinds of things. They’re a lot harder to do, but they make it more of a vibrant

ccording to a study recently released by Fannie Mae, more baby boomer retirees have mortgage debt than those retirees who were born between 1931 and 1935.

While property taxes and homeowners insurance must continue to be paid, the removal of an often-substantial mortgage payment allows homeowners to ease the pressure of stretched financial obligations.

With less outgo comes a sigh of relief, as retirees may be able to delay taking social security until age 70, pay off high interest credit card debt, allow time for the retirement portfolio to grow, and find a myriad

of other uses for tax-free proceeds of a reverse mortgage.

Recent changes to the government insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (Reverse Mortgage) program by HUD have reduced the amount of mortgage insurance paid annually from 1.25% to .5%.

Another group of seniors that are benefiting from a reverse mortgage are those who own their homes free-and-clear. The equity, or housing wealth, available to such homeowners is often substantial, and access to a portion of those funds can be life changing! More

DCSD works to improve charter renewal process School board renews three charter schools

For seven months, Douglas County School District staff and legal counsel have worked together to clean up the district’s charter school renewal process, which in the past has been described by some community members as ambiguous, unpredictable and potentially detrimental to enrollment at neighborhood schools.

The Charter Schools Act — which became Colorado law in 1993 and paved the way for charters — called for “smaller environments to experiment with educational programs and develop innovative ways to educate at-risk students.” The schools receive the same per-pupil funding as public schools but generally operate with more autonomy and flexibility. In Douglas County, there are 18.

The school district’s refined contract process outlines specific parameters on dispute resolution — should there be a disagreement between the school district and a charter school — financial reporting and the district’s obligations to charter schools, according to a presentation made by district staff at an April 2 board of education meeting.

“We do believe it captures an agreement between the representatives of the school district, as well as the charter schools, with respect to the obligations and compliance with state law,” Mary Kay Klimesh, the district’s general counsel, said at the meeting.

New language is also in the works around automatic state waivers, in which charters aren’t required to submit a Rationale and Replacement Plan outlining how it will comply

with the objective of an automatically waived state statute or state board rule. Which, for example, could be a governing board’s duties concerning staff and pay or policies relating to inservice training and official conduct, according to the Colorado Department of Education.

“For us, we will require a rationale replacement plan,” said Danny Winsor, the district’s director of schools and choice programming. “It has been an exhaustive process to make sure we set a good foundation moving forward and we give a lot of credit to our general counsel.”

The following are three charter school contracts that were renewed at the April 2 meeting under terms of the new contract process.

Ben Franklin Academy The board of education unanimously approved a five-year contract for the school in Highlands Ranch. The charter school, which opened in 2011, serves kindergarten through eighth grade with a focus on STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

North Star Academy The board of education unanimously approved a five-year contract for the K-8 school in Parker. Opened in 2006, the charter school offers a core knowledge education with an integrated Spanish language program.

Hope Online The board of education voted 6-1 to approve a two-year contract for the K-12 school, which offers online instruction in learning centers throughout Colorado. The school has been under scrutiny for its rating by the state department of education as “priority improvement” for low academic achievement.

‘It had a big impact on my life’ State Rep. Patrick Neville, a student at Columbine in 1999, fights for gun owners’ rights

Ask Tom Mauser about his shoes.

Mauser’s son Daniel was killed at Columbine High School in 1999. In the years that followed, Mauser became an outspoken advocate for stronger gun laws.

And through every event, every rally, every speech, if you look at Mauser’s feet, you’ll see the same pair of sneakers.

“These are the shoes Daniel was wearing when he died,” Mauser said.

“We wear the same size. This way, I feel like Daniel is walking with me.”

Before Daniel’s death, Mauser said he wasn’t much of an activist. He’d write the occasional letter to the editor, he said, but Columbine threw him into the public eye.

Mauser said he was haunted by a brief conversation he had with his son two weeks before he was killed.

“Daniel was on the debate team, and after a conversation with his teammates, he said, ‘Dad, did you know there are loopholes in the Brady Bill?’

I blew it off and said, ‘No, Daniel, I didn’t know that.’”

The bill requires background checks for gun sales. The Columbine killers obtained their guns through a friend who bought them at a gun show, according to news reports from the time, circumventing the law.

“I felt I had to act,” Mauser said.

A little more than a week after Daniel’s murder, Mauser attended a

“I brought a sign with a picture of my son, and 400 fliers to pass out,” Mauser said. “Thousands of people showed up. I had no idea.”

An organizer asked him to speak to the crowd.

“It took me out of my shell,” Mauser said. “I’ve never been the same since.”

Mauser is now a spokesman and board member for Ceasefire Colorado, a group that advocates for stricter gun laws.

“We have to take this seriously,” Mauser said. “We have a shameful level of gun violence in America, and we have to do something about it.”

Closing loopholes in gun-sale laws is a high priority for Mauser, as are universal background checks. Mauser also supports the recently passed “red flag” bill, a controversial measure that would allow judges to order guns taken from people believed to pose a threat to themselves or others. He would also like to see laws that prohibit felons from owning guns extended to people convicted of misdemeanors involving violence.

Mauser said he’s all too familiar with arguments against him from gun rights advocates.

“I love responding to the logic or illogic of my opponents,” Mauser said.

“By and large, the majority of Americans support the right to bear arms.

Patrick Neville was a 15-year-old sophomore at Columbine High School when two armed students walked into the building and killed 13 people, then themselves. He was on school grounds but outside when the shooting began, he said.

He doesn’t go into detail about what he saw and heard in those moments. There are survivors with more compelling stories than his, he said, and the events of that day have been widely reported. Besides, recounting the story time and time again is “exhausting,” he said, particularly leading up to the massacre’s 20th anniversary.

But make no mistake: “It had a big impact on my life,” Neville said.

Today, Neville, 35, is a Republican state representative and the House minority leader. The Castle Rock resident is among Colorado’s leading voices on gun-owners’ rights and stood in opposition to the recently passed “red flag” bill that allows firearms to be temporarily taken away from people deemed a significant threat to themselves or others.

April 20, 1999 was a blur, but it wholly changed his life trajectory, Neville said on a late-March day at his office in the state Capitol.

Later in his collegiate career, at the University of Colorado Denver, it would influence his perspective on gun rights.

His most vivid memory of the day of the tragedy is of students gathering at an elementary school following the shooting. First, there was a crowd, but as buses came to evacuate them, it slowly dwindled.

Then, the father of a student asked if Neville had seen his son.

Neville had not.

He’d known the father who approached him, and his son, since the third grade. The boys played baseball together and served as captains of their team as their fathers coached.

By high school, Neville was making all the wrong choices — in his words, he was a “punk.” Meanwhile, the man’s son “was making all the right decisions in life.” The two had drifted apart as a result.

“Once the names came out, he never got to see his son again,” Neville said, declining to name the father in what he called a political-

But that’s where the survivor’s guilt caught up with him, Neville said. Students who were excelling died that day. It inspired the teenager to change his life course.

He would go on to serve in the U.S. Army and deploy to Iraq, which impacted his life similarly to how Columbine did. He watched families mourn lost loved ones and he buried his friends. It called to mind going to the funerals of his peers after Columbine.

Then in 2014, he became the state representative for House District 45, encompassing Castle Rock, Castle Pines and portions of unincorporated Douglas County. He’s now in his third term.

Neville said he didn’t have strong opinions on gun rights until college, when he received his conceal-carry permit.

“At the time, it was illegal for me to conceal carry in my college classroom,” he said, “and if there was one place that I really felt uncomfortable or vulnerable it was sitting in a classroom.”

Colorado now allows permit holders to carry firearms on highereducation campuses.

This legislative session, Neville introduced a bill to allow someone with a concealed-carry permit to carry a firearm on public elementary, middle, junior high and high school grounds.

It’s not all about guns, Mauser said. The Columbine tragedy happened because “two mentally disturbed young men weren’t getting the care they needed,” he said.

“They were determined to commit suicide, and determined to take others with them,” Mauser said. “All societies have people who are suicidal. But in America, we seem to have people who want to take others with them,

Mauser said his heart aches every time he sees yet another mass shooting in the news. He says he flashes back to April 20, 1999, and hurts for the families of victims.

“I would tell the families: The world is not going to understand what you’re going through. Let yourself grieve. But as you move along, never lose sight of what your loved one would want.

They wouldn’t want you to be stuck in grief. They’d want to look down from heaven and see you living your life and doing something to honor them.”

For Tom Mauser, honoring his son means he’ll keep walking in Daniel’s shoes. out, he said. He plans to pursue legislation opposing gun-free zones again.

In the meantime, he’s met more Columbine victims and learned more of their stories.

As the public observes the 20th anniversary, it’s the lives and memories of their lost loved ones he wants people to remember.

“It’s amazing when I look back, it doesn’t seem like it was 20 years ago,” he said. “You look at the photos, and we were just little kids with such potential.”

MacDonald said PVD can be treated through a variety of methods

such as inserting stents and balloons to open up the arteries, which significantly improves blood flow.

Since the primary complaint from patients is leg pain, MacDonald said PVD is an under-diagnosed condition because symptoms are similar to arthritis. Doctors might overlook it, or not consider running the tests to see if it is in fact PVD causing the issues.

MacDonald said patients thinking they might have PVD can head over to South Denver Cardiology, or they can ask their regular-care physician to run an ABI (ankle-brachial index) test.

“These are simple tests to order,

and the results can be determined in a matter of minutes,” MacDonald said. “Any physician can order these tests. These tests can help a doctor differentiate between the pain being caused by arthritis or if it’s really PVD.” With a clear diagnosis, MacDonald said South Denver Cardiology moves forward as it does with all patients.

They tailor a plan of action to each individual patient. Because it’s about treating the entire patient, MacDonald said they will treat the PVD, but also work on nutrition, exercise plans and making sure that improving quality of life is a top priority.

As the much-anticipated Southeast Rail Extension project nears its grand opening in May, RidgeGate is gearing up for “fast-paced transformation,” according to a news release sent March 28.

The three new stations will be the cornerstone of new development in RidgeGate.

The Lone Tree City Center will feature a 400-acre “urban core,” that will be built over the next several decades.

Development is expected to begin as early as 2020. The release stated the city center will serve as the new “downtown” for Lone Tree, centered around the Sky Ridge Station and mixed-use, transit-oriented development.

Three residential villages will be created on the east side of I-25 in RidgeGate beginning in 2020.

The Southwest Village near the RidgeGate Station and Schweiger Ranch will be the first residential village to begin construction. The Couplet District, along RidgeGate Parkway, will feature a major grocer and will serve as a local marketplace for the new villages.

Well in the future, development of the Central Village, just southeast of the CU South Denver campus, the Southeast Village and the Lincoln Avenue Commercial District, will fill out Lone Tree’s east side.

BY THE NUMBERS RidgeGate East is beginning its buildout as the light rail station grand opening nears.

Three new neighborhoods will begin development around the Lone Tree City Center Station and RidgeGate Station and will take decades to complete. Here are the development plans for RidgeGate East by the numbers, obtained from Coventry Development Corp.: 12 million square feet of office, retail and hospital/medical space 12,000 homes 600 acres of parks, trails and natural habitat 40,000 new jobs 350 units of attainable housing 145 acres donated for civic facilities and public schools The villages will feature “civic amenities, retail and restaurants and support a walkable village environment,” the release states.

Simon said they are creating a “complete community,” integrating a broad mix of residential, retail, restaurants, office spaces, hotels, civic centers and parks and open space.

“We are looking for placemaking and thoughtful urban design to be a hallmark of the continued development on the east side of I-25,” Simon said in the press release. “This means creating diversity and walkability with mixed-

“Lone Tree and RidgeGate have demonstrated what can be accomplished when a municipality and a community developer collaborate to achieve their goals,” Millet said in the release. “In just 15 years, RidgeGate has enhanced the quality and character of our community with expanded employment, retail, recreational and cultural amenities.”

Douglas County deputies cleared in fatal shooting One suspect was shot and killed in November incident that ended in Centennial ++

The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has cleared five Douglas County deputies of any wrongdoing for their involvement in a shooting in November.

After review of the case, Deputy District Attorney Larry Bailey concluded that the use of force by the deputies — who each fired at a vehicle during a high-speed pursuit — was reasonable, justified and appropriate to defend themselves and the public from extreme danger posed by the occupants of the vehicle, according to an April 4 report to Sheriff Tony Spurlock.

“All five deputies who fired during or immediately following the pursuit had reasonable grounds to believe, and did believe, that he or another person was in imminent danger of being killed or of receiving great bodily injury because of

the (vehicle’s) occupants’ actions,” Bailey found.

Following a traffic incident in which suspects allegedly fired at deputies the morning of Nov. 27, 19-year-old Nicholas Ryan, of Aurora, was shot and killed; 21-year-old Jason Bradley Sutton, of Golden, was injured; and Peirce Elliott Langewisch, 20, was taken into custody.

According to the district attorney’s report, Deputy Nicholas Arnone observed a suspicious vehicle — a gray Infinity with a fleet license plate used by many rental companies — run a red light on South Broadway around 3:02 a.m.

Earlier that night, Arnone heard that several vehicles in the area had been stolen.

Arnone attempted to pull over the vehicle, which fled on C-470 at speeds reaching 120 mph, the report states. Arnone notified dispatch and other deputies of the pursuit, who joined the chase from various locations in Douglas County.

The vehicle exited C-470 onto Quebec traveling at speeds up to 80 mph, making its way northbound to Yosemite and eastbound to Park Meadows Drive, where an occupant fired shots at Arnone, who then backed off of the vehicle and notified backup, according to the report.

Deputies Anthony Weiss, Joshua Anderson, Justin Ruisi and Blake Davis fired shots at the vehicle — which was confirmed stolen — as it fled through the Park Meadows outer-loop area onto Chester Street and continued east on East Dry Creek Road, firing at deputies along the way. Deputies feared the safety of themselves and the public, the report says.

The pursuit ended near Dry Creek Road and Interstate 25 in Arapahoe County when deputies were involved in a car crash with the

suspects. When the vehicle became immobilized, the suspects did not fire shots but failed to comply with loud verbal commands to show their hands, leading deputies to fire shots, the report says.

Langewisch, the rear passenger who was shooting at the pursuing deputies, authorities say, has 18 charges filed against him. Fifteen are felonies. Sutton, the front passenger, has five charges against him, all of which are felonies. They will both appear in court for arraignment hearings at 8:30 a.m. April 22.

Dog’s experience with pot prompts woman to caution others Owner says pet ate an edible off the ground in Highlands Ranch

Holly Hilborn wants others to be aware of pet marijuana intoxication after her beloved pup, Lily, likely ate an edible off the ground at a Highlands Ranch park.

Hilborn knew something wasn’t

right when her normally energetic, 2-year-old Labrador retriever was lethargic, having trouble standing and experiencing tremors and urine incontinence after a March 30 visit to Kistler Park, 9603 Burntwood Way. They walk the loop regularly, but this time Hilborn’s dog ate something off the ground, buried under the snow.

“She swallowed whatever it was so quickly, and eats things off the ground a lot,” Hilborn wrote in a March 31 post to the Highlands Ranch community on a Facebook page. “We didn’t think much of it.”

VRCC, an emergency vet hospital in Englewood. A copy of the discharge summary provided to Colorado Community Media reads: “Based on Lily’s clinical signs, we strongly suspect Lily got into marijuana or THC (the active ingredient).”

Hilborn left the vet frustrated, angry, she said. She and her husband, who both work in the health care industry, never use marijuana, she said.

Her dog — which made a full recovery — started experiencing symptoms pointing to marijuana intoxication two hours after the walk at the park, Hilborn said.

Other symptoms in pets can be dilated pupils or glazed-over eyes, a dazed expression, difficulty walking and vomiting, according to Pet Poison Helpline, www.petpoisonhelpline.com.

The helpline has seen a 448 percent increase in marijuana cases since the substance was legalized in several states, according to its website.

Signs of toxicity can occur anywhere from five minutes to 12 hours after the animal is exposed to marijuana and last 30 minutes to several days, depending on the dose ingested, according to the helpline.

Local officials say Hilborn’s experience is isolated.

Highlands Ranch High football coach faces fraud charges John Trahan’s dental clinic accused of billing Medicaid for work never performed

Highlands Ranch High School head football coach John Trahan has been placed on leave after Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser announced charges of fraud filed against him.

In an April 2 news release, the attorney general’s office accused Trahan, the owner of Americas Children Dental Clinic in Denver, of billing the Colorado Medicaid program more than $400,000 between 2013 and 2016 for work never performed.

The allegation states that Trahan submitted billing to the Medicaid program indicating dentists, who at one point worked for the clinic but were no longer employed, performed the work, the release says.

Trahan could not immediately be reached for comment.

Trahan was arrested by the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office on April

1 and charged with theft and two counts of computer crime, each a felony. He posted bond and is set to appear in Denver County Court on April 15, according to the attorney general’s office.

“One of my priorities as Attorney General is to fight for and protect health care, including for those covered under the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion,” Weiser said in the release. “In order to protect the well-being of our most vulnerable citizens, our office is committed to going after and prosecuting irresponsible companies or individuals who seek to defraud the system for their own personal gain.”

On April 2, Highlands Ranch High School Principal Chris Page sent an email informing parents that Trahan had been placed on leave.

“Please understand that I am unable to share further details, as this is a personnel matter,” Page wrote.

Trahan — whom the Colorado High School Activities Association calls a Colorado coaching veteran — was hired as head football coach for Highlands Ranch High School in January 2018. He also coached track and field at the school. From 2015-17 he served as head football coach at Smoky Hill High School in Aurora.

The city manager — or town manager or town administrator, depending on where you live — is appointed by the city or town council. The manager is then tasked with implementing policy decisions made by the council.

Sgt. Jeff Miller said that to the best of his knowledge, the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office has not heard of similar incidents happening.

Most of the residents who commented on Hilborn’s Facebook post

were empathetic — some even noted similar experiences with their pets.

A few shared their support for CBD oil, a cannabis product without the same psychoactive component as marijuana that is said to help ailments in pets.

Hilborn’s advice for others: “If you or your family enjoy edibles please keep them responsibly in your home so our pets and children are not at risk of being significantly injured from a simple walk around the park,” she wrote.

Hard work staying afloat in a sea of fraud

N

ot too long ago, one of our newspaper employees received what looked like an urgent email from the company publisher. He needed some prepaid gift cards, totaling hundreds of dollars, and needed them quick.

The employee went across the street and bought the prepaid cards, eager to help out the boss.

Luckily, that’s as far as things went. The email had been a sham, faked by a computer-savvy scammer.

By now, we’re all aware of the scam in which a supposed Nigerian prince is quite eager to share his great wealth with you, if only you’d give him a down payment, or at least your bank account number and a few

But those easy-to-spot scams are old news. Nowadays, there are countless newer and more complex con jobs out there, looking to snag even the smartest of us. Email scams look more and more legit, just asking us to click one innocuous link. Sneaky hidden devices are attached to neighborhood ATMs and gas pumps, attempting to skim credit card information.

Fraudsters can be downright brazen. Recently, Jefferson County investigators found that scammers were making it look as if their calls were originating from the sheriff ’s

department, and used names of real deputies to try to appear legitimate.

The scary truth is that scammers don’t even have to trick you directly any more.

On Jan. 4, thieves broke into a storage facility and stole personal information of more than 500 people, including addresses, dates of birth and medication lists from the CVS pharmacy inside Target at 5071 Kipling in Wheat Ridge. That data breach, of course, is dwarfed by the constant stream of data-hacking scandals we hear about constantly. Recently, news broke that your Facebook password is likely compromised. Go change it now, if you haven’t.

I’m not a lawyer but here are a few reasons: First, the law could violate the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which protects against “unreasonable search and seizure.” Second, the law could violate the Fifth Amendment, which protects from being deprived of property “without due process of law.” Third, the law could violate the Sixth Amendment, which provides the accused with the right to confront their accuser face to face. And fourth, the law could violate the 14th Amendment, which makes the Fifth Amendment apply to the states in regard to depriving a person of their property without due process of law.

vindictive ex-spouse or partner, or a disgruntled neighbor. This law puts the burden of proof upon the accused and not upon the accuser, which is contrary to our practice of Common Law. You are to be considered innocent until proven guilty.

There are plenty of methods other than firearms that a dangerous person can use to harm themselves or others should they be determined to do so.

This is where better laws and more resources are needed to help the mentally unstable.

Our entire community grieves when confronted with senseless and evil acts of violence. Is the solution to deprive citizens their right to due process under the law? That is truly a slippery slope.

My least favorite “Don’t” songs are “Don’t It Make Your Brown Eyes Blue?” by Crystal Gayle and “Don’t Sleep in the Subway,” by Petula Clark.

We know that “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry” either.

Not only that, “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid,” a flawed but brilliant neo-noir parody starring Steve Martin, is an apparel reminder, and so is “Don’t wear white after Labor Day.” In 1922 in New York City, men who refused to heed an unwritten rule about not wearing straw hats after an unofficial date resulted in a riot.

Don’t laugh.

It lasted eight days.

Islands of success don’t all have palm trees

or some of us an island of success immediately conjures up the idea of living on a tropical paradise somewhere, removed from our worries and obligations, and living without debt or drama.

We imagine ourselves on white WINNING sandy beaches, WORDS warm ocean breezes, enjoying island delicacies and sipping tropical drinks. And for others this dream has already become a reality.

However, there is another island of success. It’s Michael Norton the island we can place ourselves on as we separate ourselves from the crowd and elevate ourselves from the pack.

In the pursuit of success, it is our ability to see life and opportunities differently and break away from the deafening noise that surrounds us each day. I have had the benefit of speaking with and learning from many wise and successful mentors

Otherwise, one cannot think beyond the noise.” The noise is everywhere and sometimes the demands on our lives intense.

To rise above the noise and the demands we must find time to be, to think, and to dream. In a world where stress and being stretched too thin drives us to work harder and not smarter, achievers have figured out that creating an island of success comes from their moments of peace and solitude.

So where can we find these islands of success? Some find it on walks along the beach, a hike in the mounsonal information.

• Hang up/delete. If you have any doubt about a call or email, ignore it. Hang up on all robocalls immediately. Never click on a link or open an attachment from an email from a sender you don’t trust. Delete any email that looks even the least bit suspicious.

• Use a credit card when it’s an option. Whether at the pump, or making an online purchase, credit card companies offer anti-fraud protection that a check, money order or a debit card does not.

Others find it in their commute to work, using the time for reflection and processing. Some make it a conscious habit of waking up early, earlier than others in their home, and find time each morning to simply be, think, and dream.

We cannot underestimate the power of solitude and peaceful moments when it comes to finding our passion and igniting or creativity.

When we think about what Thomas Edison or Pablo Picasso said about solitude, we see where our best thinking and our greatest works are achieved. Our job along the journey towards our own success is to rise above the noise and demands to find our island and build in time for ourselves along the way. This is not

selfish or to be considered an act of selfishness as the more time we can spend thinking and doing great works, the more likely it is that the outcome will be of significant benefit to others in our lives personally and professionally. We become difference makers in this world.

Studies show being outdoors reduces stress, depression and anxiety

fter graduating college, Travis Wild soon found that spending time in the mountains and on trails in Colorado gave him a place to reconnect with himself and restore his mind.

“For me, the outdoors are how everything is supposed to be without influence of problems,” Wild said, adding that nature has been the steady support in his life through rough times.

When he was diagnosed with testicular cancer almost five years ago, at age 26, Wild turned to nature to destress and cope with the difficult situation. The diagnosis came when he was changing jobs, changing relationships and mourning the loss of his grandmother.

“Outside was a place that I could go to step back and be in control a little more,” Wild said. “I got to feel normal again. Sometimes it was the only thing I had to look forward to.”

Now, Wild lives on the road, having turned his passion for outdoor space and adventure into a career as an

“As a psychologist, when we’re trained we don’t talk about things like being outdoors as an intervention,” said Benjamin Miller, a psychologist on the board of Mental Health Colorado. “But when you think about the exposure to nature, there’s no surprise that it can decrease some symptoms of anxiety and depression.”

“One of the really interesting things this study shows is that nature contact during the workday leads to lower stress and higher job satisfaction,” Miller said.

In addition to being surrounded by nature, Miller said the practices that come with it help to improve mental health.

“We are we able to rest our minds and be present and focus on the moment,” Miller said.

In 2018, 55 percent of visitors to Jefferson County Open Space parks and trails said they saw the outdoor space as adding extreme benefit to their emotional wellbeing, ranking it fourth on a survey that measured the benefits of open space.

Last year, an estimated 7 million people visited the 56,000 acres of preserved land, 28 parks and 244 miles of trail in the Jeffco Open Space park system.

“We all knew it in our hearts, but to see it on paper was impactful,” said Mary Ann Bonnell, visitor services manager for Jeffco Open Space. “We now understand that people implicitly come to our parks for emotional wellbeing.”

This was the first time the survey, conducted last in 2011, measured this metric.

The next step, Bonnell said, is to protect visitor experience as best -as possible. That means preserving a quiet park and trail, so those who want to connect with nature can.

Jeffco Open Space has an amplified music regulation as well as a drone ban and leash law.

“I know these seem tangential, but it’s respecting the experience people are having outdoors,” Bonnell said.

ance Opp has signed a letter of intent to play football next fall at Colorado StatePueblo, but in the meantime, the Highlands Ranch senior is concentrating on baseball.

Opp, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, is a center fielder and pitcher for the Falcons and admits the sport isn’t easy to play.

“One of the hardest things I’ve done growing up is hit a baseball,” he said. “I’ve played basketball and I throw the discus in track right now, but I would say baseball is the most mental thing.

“I played on a very successful youth baseball team. I always loved winning and that aspect of it. Football is a grind on your body but baseball is very mental. That’s one thing I’ve always loved. You get to relax mentally and it’s a different kind of slow motion.”

‘One of the hardest things I’ve done growing up is hit a baseball.’

COACH’S TAKE: ‘He’s a great kid and a very solid player. We expect to rely on him pretty heavily throughout the season on the mound, in center field, and in the top part of our order.

He is a very reliable kid who a lot of our team can look up to. We have a pretty good stable of pitchers and he is starting to position himself as one of our top guys.’

Q&A with Opp Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Bo Jackson. He’s one of the greatest athletes to play. He played baseball, football, and track. He has a good personality and wasn’t a hot shot.

What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?

My parents. One thing my parents always taught me is just commitment to the sport. I go out and work on my own and that all comes from my parents. They are all about if you are going to do something, do it 100 percent.

What would be a perfect performance in baseball?

Individually, I would keep my pitch count low, throw strikes and get ground balls. Hitting wise, I am always a guy who hits line drives and having the aspect of killing the ball, just scoring runners and hitting the ball at the right place at the right place, getting counts deep in the at-bat. When it comes to

fielding, just doing my best.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

I have always been someone who likes math. Also take accounting and that is pretty interesting. But my probably favorite class is economics What do you like to do away from sports and school?

I love to hang out with my friends and my family. I go out on the golf course and just like to hang out a lot.

What is the toughest pitch for you to hit?

The hardest pitch to hit is a fastball ball that tails away from me.

Otherwise I would say a changeup is very deceiving.

What pitch do you have the most confidence in delivering?

I definitely have confidence with my fastball. I throw a two-seam for sure. If it is to a righty, I will throw it away from a rightly and throw it away from a lefty.

ocal products Mallory Pugh and Lindsey Horan, members of the U.S. women’s soccer team, joined an impressive assembly of people on April 3 when they each accepted Denver Challenge Coins and personalized street signs from Denver mayor Michael B. Hancock.

A Denver Challenge Coin is the equivalent of the key to the city.

Only 30 people OVERTIME have received a Challenge Coin from Hancock and some of those people include Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Others who have been Jim Benton honored include John Elway, former Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Chauncey Billups, Stevie Wonder and local military servicemen and women and firefighters.

Pugh, the 20-year-old who played with Real Colorado and for three seasons at Mountain Vista High School, is the youngest American to play and score as an 18-year-old in the Olympic Games. She plays for the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League.

Horan, 24, played club soccer for the Colorado Rush and graduated from Golden High school, but did not play soccer for the school. She was the first American female soccer player to sign a professional contract directly out of high school with Paris Saint-Germain.

She has played pro soccer since 2012 and is currently on the Portland Thorns’ roster.

Pugh and Horan were in town with the national team for a friendly match on April 4 against Australia at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The game was one of the countdown matches for the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer.

The Americans rallied to notch a 5-3 victory and Pugh came in as a sub and scored twice to spark the USA win.

‘Helping a brother make a last wish come true’

F

or Christian Redman, the Last Ride fulfilled a heartfelt wish: A celebration with his daughter in Kentucky on her 18th birthday, a reunion with fellow 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment troopers and veterans, and a chance to once more sink his toes in the sand of a Key West beach.

“I just want to thank everybody who hleped me — I really appreciate it,” said Redman, 51, a Parker resident who is dying of the late-stage colon cancer he has fiercely fought for three years. His doctors in November gave him eight to 16 months to live. “I never will forget it.”

Ann Macari Rocky Cuda, a retired sergeant from Healey the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment — an Army unit also known as the Blackhorse Regiment — came up with the idea for a kind of make-a-wish last ride for Blackhorse troopers with Redman as the inaugural event. He called it Maverick’s Last Ride after Redman’s call sign from his Army days.

The plan was for a caravan-style road trip leaving March 4 from Parker to Louisville, Kentucky, so Redman could celebrate with his daughter on her 18th birthday on March 10, then on to the Daytona Beach bike week with the

fly to Louisville to be with his daughter on her birthday. He returned home for doctor appointments, then flew to Key West on March 15, where he spent five days with Cuda, Simpson and several other Blackhorse veterans.

Simpson drove the route, meeting Redman in Louisville and Key West, and other Blackhorse veterans in Kansas City, Missouri, and Atlanta.

“This is what it was all about, helping a brother make a last wish come true,” Cuda said. “We didn’t really know if it would all work out. However, we believed in each other and we believed that our Blackhorse family would come

Ray Simpson, a Blackhorse veteran in Colorado Springs, offered to drive Redman in his Ford pickup, pulling a 36-foot camper. Redman’s friends and local veterans set up a GoFundMe account and held fundraisers to help cover the trip’s expenses and Redman’s ongoing medical bills. As of March 31, about $10,400 had been raised.

The Last Ride didn’t happen exactly as planned: Redman was too sick to make the road trip. But he was able to

Since his return from Key West, Redman has been struggling. Doctors have found more cancer in his liver.

He’s facing more radiation and chemo treatments.

The trip, he said, was a true blessing: “Key West was beautiful as always. It was good to see my brothers, and the weather was fantastic. It’s just a different atmosphere down there — something’s always going on. It helped me forget that I was sick for a little while.”

And, Redman said, “I did sink my toes in the sand.”

Sylvan moves to Lone Tree office, plans more sites in county STAFF REPORT

Sylvan Learning recently opened its first Lone Tree center, providing a more central site with easier access for Douglas County families, Mark Bellestri, owner of Sylvan Learning, said in a news release.

“There are so many other activities and retail stores, and our families are finding it a great place to be,” Bellestri said in the release. “Moms and dads can do more and get more done while their students are at the center.”

The center moved from its Highlands Ranch site in February, with a grand opening on March 9.

Sylvan Learning has been open in the Douglas County area for 25 years and plans to open a site in Parker this June.

From there, Sylvan plans to open two satellite locations, one in western Douglas County near the border of Highlands Ranch and Littleton, and a second in the Castle RockCastle Pines area. Both locations are expected to be up and running in the next two years, the release said.
