Interim RTD chief targets retention, project oversight Paul Ballard came from Texas to serve until board picks long-term replacement

The Regional Transportation District’s interim CEO and general manager will have 14 months to steer the district in the right direction before RTD finds a long-term replacement.

Paul Ballard, the longtime general manager of transit agencies in Fort Worth, Texas; NashBallard ville, Tennessee; and St. Louis, came out of retirement to guide the district as it experiences driver and operator shortages and declining ridership. Ballard and RTD agreed he would helm the district for a period ranging from four to 14 months.

“My objective is to keep things going,” Ballard said. “Tackle the issues I can in the interim and make things ready for the next, permanent CEO.” Ballard said the length of his stint will depend on the employee retention rate.

Ballard joined RTD officially Feb. 24 as a temporary replacement to

Ballard said his two priorities are improving worker retention and overseeing the opening of the north commuter rail. Opening of the N Line, a 2004 FasTracks project to bring 18.5 miles of commuter rail from Union Station to Commerce City, Northglenn and Thornton, has been delayed by almost three years due to construction problems. RTD expects to open the line later this year.

Ballard said, in his experience, Denver’s transit problems are unique.

“In Fort Worth, for example, we had a similar labor market to here … But somehow, we didn’t have the turnover,” Ballard said. Ballard said Fort Worth’s transit agency, Trinity Metro, was smaller, which made it easier to develop

strong relationships within the agency.

“Obviously, there’s a communication problem (at RTD),” Ballard said.

“That’s something we have to work on. How do we communicate to our employees, make them really part of the team and (make them) understand what our goals and objectives are?”

Ballard said he plans to regularly ride different RTD bus and rail lines to hear firsthand from riders and operators.

“We have a good source of people to hire from, but somehow they’re not staying,” Ballard said. “We need to study it very closely and very quickly and find out how we can improve the experience so they want to stay.

“We have to convince them to stick with it and things will get better quickly because it’s not an easy job,” Ballard said.

RTD has experienced a driver shortage that has forced it to cut service across the region. On May 17, the district will make cuts to certain bus and rail lines, following a series of public open houses throughout the region, which conclude March 5.

“We talk about how we want to increase ridership. Cutting service is not going to solve that, obviously. But we have to face reality,” Ballard said.

Ballard noted service cuts can have a larger impact on local businesses whose employees rely on public transit to get to work.

Ballard was optimistic about working with the Colorado Legislature, which he planned to do for the first

time Feb. 25. Senate Bill 151 aims to expand RTD’s board of directors by two, both governor-appointed representatives, who would advocate for the district’s most vulnerable population — those with disabilities and those in disadvantaged communities.

Angie Rivera-Malpiede, chair of the RTD Board of Directors, said the board was excited to bring Ballard on in a “new era” for the district. Rivera-Malpiede thanked the public for its input in the search for the district’s new CEO/ GM. RTD allowed members of the community to weigh in on the five finalists for the job, announced in January.

Forty people applied for the job.

“The board and I are extremely excited about all the possibilities we have moving forward,” Rivera-Malpiede said.

Rivera-Malpiede said the new executive team, voted in Jan. 7, made a point to be more transparent, beginning with the open search for an interim CEO/ GM. “I think that’s a whole new era,” Rivera-Malpiede said. Rivera-Malpiede added the district’s efforts to reach constituents through surveys and open houses at places like bus stops and train stations, where people “gather organically.”

“It’s really a whole new way of thinking about talking to our constituents, our commuters and everybody, our staff, and we’re really excited about that,” Rivera-Malpiede said. “We think Mr. Ballard will enhance that opportunity with us to work hand-in-hand.”

Nonprofit opens doors to prom attendance Girls without means of buying dresses can shop Be Happy Boutique

A Castle Rock nonprofit formed to honor the memory of Rylie Guentensberger, who died nearly three years ago at age 12, is gathering prom dresses for girls who don’t have the means of buying one in an effort to continue Rylie’s legacy of spreading small acts of kindness.

The nonprofit Rylie’s ARK, which stands for acts of random kindness, will hold its Be Happy Boutique on March 28 in Kirk Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Girls who need help getting a prom dress can book a fitting to shop donated, lightly used dresses at the pop-up event.

Each shopper will be paired with a volunteer who will guide them in the shopping process. They’ll also be entered to win a free appointment with a hairstylist for their prom.

“We’re going to use that facility and jazz it up to make the girls feel like they’re going in kind of bridal shop style,” Meghann Guentensberger said.

“Anyone can apply where the cost of a dress would be an obstacle,” she said. “We’re helping them overcome that obstacle.”

Girls do not need to be local to Douglas County or meet a specific income requirement to register. Fittings can be booked at ryliesark.org.

People wishing to donate can drop off dresses at local high schools and

businesses, including Castle View High School, Douglas County High School and the Castle Rock Rec Center. A full list of drop-off locations throughout Douglas County is available on the nonprofit’s website.

So far, the nonprofit has collected more than 160 dresses but is hoping to gather as many as possible. Purses, jewelry and shoes are also accepted.

The Guentensberger family founded Rylie’s ARK with the idea of taking

Rylie’s reputation for spreading small acts of kindness and growing that in the community.

Rylie died in May 2017 after a car crashed into a Parker store where she was shopping for running shoes with her mother, leaving her in a coma for nearly a month before her passing.

Guentensberger said people repeatedly told the family during Rylie’s hospital stay and after her death about the small ways she brightened their lives — a kind note in a teacher’s drawer or a hug someone didn’t know they needed.

“Rylie’s ARK is a community that is focused on creating a big impact through small acts of kindness,” Guentensberger said. “Really, our goal is to just get people coming together, changing the world one act of kindness at a time.”

Hospital administrator steps into big task Kirk McCarty named new CEO of Sky Ridge Medical Center

Sky Ridge Medical Center welcomed its third CEO on Feb. 26, replacing the longtime administrator of the Lone Tree hospital, Susan Hicks.

HealthONE named former Chief Operating Officer Kirk McCarty as the new CEO of Sky Ridge Medical Center.

McCarty replaces the retiring CEO Hicks, who had served with the hospital since its foundMcCarty ing in 2003. Hicks began as chief operating officer before being promoted to CEO in 2014.

McCarty thanked Hicks and Maureen Tarrant, Sky Ridge’s first CEO, for making the hospital what it is today.

“They really created a legacy and a presence for HCA (Hospital Corporation of America) and Sky Ridge in this area. I think they were great

visionaries in starting Sky Ridge in an open field with nothing around it to making it really a pillar in Lone Tree and Douglas County,” McCarty said.

“They’re huge shoes to fill.”

McCarty joined Sky Ridge in December 2014 as COO. Prior to joining Sky Ridge Medical Center, McCarty was vice president of operations at HCA’s Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri, a 597-bed, multicampus facility. McCarty served with Research Medical Center since 2002.

McCarty said he hopes to continue the legacy left by Hicks and Tarrant to maintain Sky Ridge as a community hospital. As population booms in Douglas County and as Lone Tree prepares for development on the east side of RidgeGate — across the highway from Sky Ridge — McCarty said it’s vital to be a leader in the community as well as to partner with other local businesses and agencies.

“What’s important to our people at Sky Ridge and important to our patients are the relationships we have,” McCarty said. “I see my job as a caretaker of what’s already been created and to be a driver of the future.”

College of Nursing. McCarty said he believes his background as a nurse will serve him well in understanding the needs of his staff and patients, as it did Hicks, who is also a nurse by trade.

“The thing I notice the most is when I’m talking to clinical folks, I can truly say I’ve been where they are,” McCarty said. “I’ve dealt with the challenges

of being a nurse in a hospital. I think there are a lot intagibles in how it relates to that.”

McCarty lives in Elizabeth with his wife, who is also a nurse, and three children. When he’s not working, he said he’s usually plenty busy with his kids’ sports.

McCarty said he was particularly proud of the hospital’s neuroscience program, thrombectomy-capable stroke center and high marks for its HCA trauma review.

Sylvia Young, president and CEO of HealthONE, the parent health care provider to Sky Ridge, praised McCarty’s past success and leadership, welcoming him to the staff, in a Feb. 27 news release.

“As COO, Kirk has achieved many accomplishments, including developing a comprehensive neuro interventional radiology program from conception to achieving thrombectomy-capable certification from The Joint Commission as well as successfully leading the American College of Surgeons Level II Trauma survey in 2018 and 2020 with a perfect score,” Young stated in the release. “With a proven track record of success, Kirk has the overwhelming support from the medical staff and employees of Sky Ridge.”

Lutheran High School gets safety grant from county Douglas County legally obligated to give private schools grants, commissioners say

Douglas County awarded the private Lutheran High School with $134,351 from its school safety grant program on Feb. 25.

launched the grant initiative in May after a shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch earlier that month. The board offered $10 million in one-time funds for mental health and physical security projects in county schools — private, charter and public.

Lutheran is a private, Christian school in Parker enrolling 690 students.

Dan Gehrke, Lutheran’s executive director, said the money will make a difference for the school and thanked commissioners for including private schools in the initiative.

“Private school is a difficult business. It’s a razor-thin margin,” he said.

“I’m just here to say thanks. I get that public funding and private schools is fraught with pitfalls and disagreements.”

Commissioner Abe Laydon referenced the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Trinity Lutheran Church v. Comer, which addressed whether a state grant program could be awarded to religious institutions in Missouri and landed in Trinity Lutheran’s favor.

The board believes the case means the county must award the grant dollars to private schools as well, although some community members have raised concerns about giving the institutions public tax dollars. The

board awarded $263,337 to another Parker private school, Southeast Christian School, in January.

“We don’t have any other legal right than to make sure that you are funded as well,” Laydon told Gehrke.

Roger Partidge, chair of the board of commissioners. said the process of awarding the grants, which began with a $6.8 million grant to the Douglas County School District in January, has helped the board hear personal stories explaining how grants will help schools.

“I don’t think we realized the impact that this was going to make,” Partridge said.

Local Methodists grapple with national changes Split in church is inevitable based on debate about LGBTQ marriages and ordinations

W

hen the Jardine family joined St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Highlands Ranch in 2018, they were grateful to have a place where their oldest son would be accepted.

Not long before, the then 14-year-old had come out as gay, and the Parker family had immediately left their previous faith because they felt there wasn’t a place for them in the conservative congregation.

After a few Sundays at St. Andrew, “my son said to me, ‘I’m so glad I still get to have religion in my life,’” Ryan Jardine said. “That for me was such a touching moment.”

The Jardine family is pleased with their experience at the Highlands Ranch place of worship. But that’s only because the church actively breaks the Methodist denomination’s rules by performing same-sex marriages and ordaining LGBTQ people.

“I feel comfortable attending St. Andrew because I feel like they have the autonomy and desire to be inclusive,” Jardine said. “St. Andrew has gone out of their way with him to make sure he feels accepted and loved.”

But the United Methodist Church has been deeply divided for decades over how to include the LGBTQ community in its faith. And, in May, the issue may finally split the church as members vote on the Protocol, a proposal that would divide the church into two denominations — one for those who formally endorse same-sex marriage and the ordination of gay and lesbian clergy, and another for those who do not.

Two churches acting as one The United Methodist Church, or UMC, works a lot like modern democracies, with a system of delegates, conferences and legislation. When members want to make a change within the denomination, they must follow strict procedures.

The church first addressed homosexuality in the 1970s, when the UMC adopted a stance against condoning same-sex marriage. Since then, there have been multiple additions to that ruling, such as completely outlawing same-sex marriages and ordinations of clergy who identify as LGBTQ. Several attempts by delegates from progressive churches to remove language stating homosexuality is incompatible with Christianity have failed.

In 2019, delegates voted to approve the Traditionalist Plan, strengthening penalties for those who violate these policies.

But in the UMC’s Mountain Sky Conference, which includes Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Montana, the current bishop, Karen Oliveto, is the first openly lesbian person to hold her office. She recently said she won’t process complaints related to LGBTQ involvement in church rites.

2000: While the incompatibility clause in the Social Principals is upheld, it is softened and new language is added.

“We implore families and churches not gift for ministry,” she said, “to simply be LGBTQ is no reason to receive a complaint.”

Oliveto’s stance — she believes the Traditionalist Plan has created “a

January 2020: The Protocol is introduced, proposing a split of the church based on the compatibility of LGBTQ people and the church.

“The United Methodist Church and its members are at an impasse, the Church’s witness and mission is being impeded and the Church itself as well as its members have been injured.”

Rev. Bob Kaylor, lead pastor at Tri-Lakes UMC in Monument, which follows the more traditional belief, believes “we have long been at least two churches trying to act like one church.”

Traditionalist views, he said, are often misunderstood.

“The biggest misconception is that if you insist that Christian marriage is reserved for one man and one woman that somehow you hate your LGBTQ neighbors,” he wrote in an email to Colorado Community Media.

“We aren’t trying to deny any human rights to anyone. We simply believe that the rites of the church must be consistent with Scripture and the longstanding teaching of the church.”

The Protocol, conceived by delegates from churches across the world — including bishops and reverends — calls for worship practices to remain the same in all churches. But it gives traditionalists $25 million to create a new Methodist denomination, which would allow and enforce only unions between a man and a woman and prohibit ordinations of anyone who identifies as LGBTQ. Remaining churches continue as United Methodist and will support the inclusivity of all people in rites such as marriage and ordination.

While the Protocol isn’t the only proposal under consideration, it has the strongest momentum and was derived from the most viewpoints, according to UMC documents. Delegates worked on the plan in 2019 and announced it in January. In May, 862 delegates from across the world will convene in Minneapolis to vote on the Protocol.

If the legislation passes, the Mountain Sky Conference would vote by July 2021 whether to join the inclusive or traditional branch. Individual churches, regardless of their conference’s decision, also can vote to stand with either side, with all decisions to be made by Dec. 31, 2024.

According to Oliveto, most of the nearly 380 churches in her conference identify as inclusive of all people. In a petition signed last July, about a dozen leaders from churches throughout the conference stated they reject the traditionalists’ “strict requirements.”

“The Traditionalist Plan is against everything my region has come to understand about the body of Christ,” Oliveto said. “We’re grounded in an understanding of God’s generous grace.”

In the Denver metro area’s Methodist community, congregants and clergy say they are anxious and hopeful about the coming months and potential changes.

Some area churches have already lost members of their congregation over this issue. Others fear the split will lead to further departures.

Among religious leaders, “there is a strong push to keep as many people together as possible,” said Rev. Megan Armstrong, associate pastor at Arvada United Methodist Church.

At a global conference this May in Minneapolis, hundreds of United Methodist Church delegates will vote whether to approve legislation based on the Protocol.

Should the legislation pass, the Protocol requires: • Those forming a new denomination will register by May 15, 2021.

• Regional conferences, such as the Mountain Sky Conference, which includes Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Montana, will choose which branch to affiliate with

• $25 million will be allocated to the traditionalist Methodist denomination and $2 million will be set aside for any other denominations that are formed.

“These are the people who have sat next to you,” Armstrong said, “who have been there when your child was baptized, who have comforted you.”

An inevitable split Despite these shared experiences, church data shows conflicting viewpoints among its members.

A 2019 UMC survey of more than 500 congregants in the U.S. showed that 44% identified as conservative or traditional in their religious beliefs, 20% identified as progressive or liberal and the rest were a mix of moderate and unsure, according to a news release from the church.

In 2015, the church completed a similar poll asking about U.S. congregants’ beliefs on same-sex marriage.

It surveyed 400 people in each of three groups — pastors, leaders and members. Results showed 42% of members

disagreed with the church’s ban on same-sex marriage. About 38% of pastors also disagreed.

On both sides of the debate, Methodists cite the Bible and the central mission of Christianity to support their beliefs.

“The Bible has only six passages that speak to anything related to the issue of homosexuality,” said Rev. Mark Feldmeir, lead pastor at St. Andrew UMC in Highlands Ranch.

“Scripturally speaking, there’s no concept for homosexuality but we’ve interpreted some of those passages through the lens of our own biases.”

He believes passages interpreted in the present day as being about homosexuality actually referred to other concepts and have been misconstrued because of faulty translations and a lack of historical context.

Kaylor, one of the area’s few traditionalist pastors, disagrees, saying Scripture clearly defines marriage as between a man and a woman. He also maintains the traditionalist view is inclusive.

“All of us are sinners in need of God’s grace and restoration. That is, I think, a radically inclusive position — though a very different way of defining inclusivity than my progressive colleagues might express,” Kaylor said in his email. “... the most inclusive church is the one where all the people are finding together that new way of life in Christ, no matter what their particular pattern of sin and brokenness might have been. I need my LGBTQ friends, my addicted friends, my greedy friends, my gluttonous friends … to be part of the church and they need me — because we all need Christ.”

Some local churches, like Littleton United Methodist Church, fall somewhere in the middle of the debate.

The church is open to all members of the LGBTQ community but also wants to be open to people who are somewhat more traditionalist, said Rev. Richard Evans, interim senior pastor.

“Right now,” he said, “I’m very much aware that I’m an interim minister of a ‘purple’ (politically mixed) church trying to be a minister to everybody (and) convey that whatever

Local leaders such as Feldmeir and Armstrong believe the Mountain Sky conference will likely side with the inclusive branch if the Protocol is approved. But even if the legislation isn’t adopted, local pastors say a split is inevitable.

After the Traditionalist plan passed in 2019, St. Andrew led a group of about 50 like-minded churches from throughout the country in preliminary plans to leave the denomination if forced to follow the conservative policy. Those plans were put on hold when the Protocol was announced.

Should the Protocol not be approved, other churches such as Lakewood UMC also would consider leaving the denomination, said Rev. Ben Hensley, the church’s lead pastor.

“At Lakewood UMC, the conversation we will be having involves the question of who we are and our identity,” Hensley said. “Are we a congregation comfortable with discrimination against the LGBTQ community? I don’t believe (that we are).”

these plans to split, no matter the process, are a necessary reassurance.

Their experience has found few fully inclusive places of worship south of Denver. But for the Jardines’ son, whose family asked that his name not be used for privacy reasons, St. Andrew’s viewpoint has allowed him to find a church community, particularly among his peers, that he didn’t have before.

“It makes it a lot easier in normal life” to accept himself, the teen said.

Without the Highlands Ranch church, the family wouldn’t know where to go.

Said Ryan Jardine: “We wouldn’t feel comfortable anywhere where LGBTQ individuals can’t be fully included in every aspect, including as pastors or reverends, (or be able to) participate in all rites.”

Former El Treo building nears sale, owner says

The building still donning the name El Treo has been vacant for 11 years, and its owner, Hemal Jhaveri, said he is nearing a sale of the space.

Jhaveri said he is in the process of selling the building but did not give a definitive date when he expects that to happen. The building at 9070 Maximus Drive, prominently facing Yosemite Street, has been used for many purposes, most recently as a hybrid restaurant, bar and club. Before that, the building was Stallions, a nightclub. And prior to that, it was Bahama Breeze, a Caribbean food chain restaurant.

“When (El Treo) closed, it had not had any significant movement on it in terms of development,” said Lone Tree economic development director Jeff Holwell. “We’ve heard a lot of rumors over the years of potential (tenants).”

El Treo closed in late 2009 and the building has remained vacant.

City staff said the property has been maintained well enough. The main

concern is the upkeep of the outside of the building.

“City code requires property owners to maintain property regardless if the building is closed,” Holwell said.

“When a building sits vacant this long it has wear and tear, and (Jhaveri) has been good at working with us from a zoning enforcement standpoint to keep the property maintained.

But, Holwell added, as years go by, it gets more and more difficult to sell.

Despite that, Holwell said the property has been maintained “better than most” considering how long it has been vacant.

The size of the property is difficult as well. El Treo is 14,500 square feet.

Many restaurants are no more than 5,000 square feet.

The property is valuable, though. But the city can’t do much in terms of hurrying a deal along.

“The city can be a cheerleader if an entity wants to buy it or wants to something with it,” Holwell said. “We’ve done a lot of that encouragement. But there’s no concrete thing beyond that we can do.”

VOICES A handful of clues before we choose

T

his is it, I promise. My one and only political column.

Nationally, roughly 43% of eligible voters QUIET did not vote in the 2016 presidential DESPERATION election.

Let’s try to do better.

That’s all I am going to say. You’re not going to get an endorsement out of me, but if you can read between the lines, I think you’ll Craig Marshall know.

I have never seen Smith anything like 2016-20.

If nothing else, it has been entertaining.

However, there has been a whole lot

of else. Daily. Hourly.

The past three and a half years have been exhausting and exasperating.

There’s no other way for me to look at it.

It’s been what’s called an “eye opener.” I simply didn’t realize as many of my neighbors believe in what they believe in.

Maybe that’s the silver lining.

The United States are not united states.

I often wonder if the exhaustion and exasperation have wicked into our conscious and unconscious behavior.

There seems to be more disrespect and belligerence.

I would prefer to be either informative or amusing and leave the deep dish editorials to others.

Will Rogers said, “I am not a member of any organized political party.

I’m a Democrat.”

Does anyone remember Rogers?

He was born to a Cherokee family in 1879 and died in a plane crash in Alaska in 1935. In between, he was a humorist, actor, cowboy, social commentator and newspaper columnist.

“Folksy” always appears next to his name.

He once said he never met a man he didn’t like.

Boy, I sure have. Including myself.

Each and every one of us is imperfect. Except my sister. No, I take that back. She bites her fork.

Some people are more imperfect than others.

I could name names all day, but why be that unpleasant?

It’s so easy to be unpleasant, and I admit my own voice participates.

If I had only one choice, I’d choose

“humorist.”

I can’t change, improve, or enthrall anyone, and I don’t want to try.

I wish I had kept track of the films I have watched since November 2016.

Have there been more comedies than tragedies?

How about music? My preference was wordless classical music before the 2016 election and it has remained wordless classical music.

When I hear Beethoven it improves my day. It’s so good, it makes up for the headlines, at least for 10 or 15 minutes.

There’s something else that improves my day: writing. It’s my banjo.

One of Steve Martin’s routines had him playing the banjo. Playing the banjo whisked away whatever troubles he was having.

That means that they have given up their rights to hold their employers responsible for wrongdoing in a court of law; they must go through a secretive process that almost always favors the corporation rather than the employee.

As Gretchen Carlson, the former Fox News anchor famously said, “Forced Arbitration is a harasser’s best friend because it forces the cases of women who are facing harassment or any other kind of gender discrimination into a secret chamber where no one ever knows what happened to them.”

Sexual harassment is just one example, but there are many others, including not paying overtime, wage theft and racial prejudice. Low-wage workers are most impacted by forced arbitration – 65% of them have it in their employment contracts and are the least able to hire lawyers to help right the wrong.

The good news is the Colorado Legislature is considering a bill – Senate BIll 93 – that would make arbitration more ethical, transparent and fair in our state so everyday Coloradans can stand up for their rights against corporations that have harmed them.

o, occasionally, my selling roots do show up in some of my writing. And, although you may not be in sales yourself, two things may happen by continuing to read on. First, you may know someone in sales, and they could find this column interesting. Second, even though WINNING it looks like a WORDS column about the selling profession, it’s really about much more.

Over the years I have heard two sides of an argument. There is one school of thought that believes there are certain people Michael Norton who are born with the gifts, personality, attitude and skills to be recognized as a born salesperson. The other side of that argument is that there is no such thing as a born salesperson, salespeople are made, not born. They will argue that even though they may have been blessed with the gifts, personality and attitude, there is no way they were born with the skills.

Do you know any born salespeople? I mean the kind of person that without any guidance or direction just somehow ended up in sales.

And not only did they end up in sales, they were somewhat successful and sometimes even wildly successful. I know that I can personally name a few men and women whom I know and whom I have worked with who may have me thinking that they actually were a born salesperson.

Now having spent most of my professional life in personal and professional development, and having met thousands of salespeople over the years, I may be qualified to choose a side in this debate. And where I would land would be that I do believe there are born salespeople. Just like I believe there are born athletes, born musicians, and born chefs, I also believe there are born salespeople. But just like an athlete, musician, or chef who was born with certain gifts, personalities, and attitudes, somewhere along the way they were taught and perfected skills and techniques. Somewhere along the way they received coaching and training to elevate them to a

Technology helps prevent crime in Douglas County

n a society that is becoming everincreasingly dependent on technology, the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office works diligently to keep up. There are many ways that technology keeps us safe. Drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are a very small part of a much larger picture regarding how the sheriff ’s office utilizes technology to fight LIVING & and prevent crime AGING WELL within Douglas County as a whole.

The following is a breakdown of a few major technological elements about the drone program.

The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office utilizes several UAVs, all with different Jason Blanchard capabilities. Some are consumer grade (not much more than a flying stabilized 4k camera) while others are professional grade which allow for larger payloads (to include dual cameras that utilize zoom, thermal, or infrared cameras). So how is this technology used? To date, it’s mostly used for accurate evidence collection, but it can and is also used for surveillance and tracking suspects

When we look at the difference between being born with certain physical qualities and positive attitudes that help us get to where we want to go in life, there is also this other quality called desire and another trait called work ethic. And when we can marry our desire and work ethic with the qualities and attributes we were born with, while working on ourselves and our craft, we can become great at anything.

Maybe the argument shouldn’t be about whether or not we were born to be a certain kind of person, maybe the argument should be that we were all born with gifts, personalities, attitudes, and the ability to build upon each one through some great coaching, training, and practice.

As soon as I sit down to write, I leave (most) of my troubles at the doorstep. With one exception: I often write letters to the editor of the daily, and it’s rarely to praise someone or something.

I reminisce more than ever these days. Partly because of my age and partly because of the past three and a half years.

I lived alone throughout college in little apartments, generally with

The ability to surveil is limited by the Fourth Amendment, which establishes laws in order to “search” a person or property. We are not able to randomly fly up to somebody’s window and “take a peek” because we suspect there might illegal activity afoot. Probable cause is required and more than likely a warrant for such activity. That is unless we are legally permitted to do a warrantless search in an emergency tactical situation.

When it comes to tracking a suspect running from law enforcement, there are also some pretty substantial limitations. Airspace (the sky) is regulated by the FAA, and there are certain areas in Douglas County that do not allow a UAV to fly without special permission or a waiver (specifically near Centennial Airport). Permission can be granted, but it usually takes some time to make it happen, giving the suspect a chance to get outside of the drone’s range. In order to be legally flown commercially, a drone is required to be within a pilot’s visual line of sight (which is about a mile on a clear day) and is limited to a 30-minute flight time, and about 35 mph. The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office does have a night waiver which allows us to fly at night, but again, it is required to

Drones are excellent at painting a very accurate portrayal of a scene using multiple technologies to include 3D and Ortho-mosaic mapping. These tools combined make it so that we can present very accurate portrayals of a scene to a judge and jury in cases that would have previously missed the big picture. Investigators can go back to a scene to review details on a 3D model well after the incident has cleared.

While drones are a hot topic, that tech is only scratching the surface of the technology utilized in Douglas County to keep citizens safe. Other exciting technologies include the utilization of the STACC (Statistical & Tactical Approach to Crime and Crashes) program, the SET team, license plate reader technology, body cameras, dash

cameras and better radio coverage for communications.

Movie theaters step up comfort, amenities for enhanced experience

raditional moviegoing is struggling, and it’s not hard to see why. Cheap Netflix subscriptions. High (and higher) definition TVs. The ability to stream endless hours of entertainment with the push of a smartphone button.

It’s that seemingly endless entertainment bounty that makes the decline of the simpleton cinema inevitable, right? Perhaps, but don’t tell that to the executives at the nation’s two largest movie theater chains, Regal Cinemas and AMC Theaters. They’ve both spent millions on lavish renovations and improvements to their theaters across the Denver area and show no signs of stopping.

From Westminster to Highlands Ranch and Arvada to Lone Tree, Denver-area audiences now sip craft beers and nosh on gourmet treats like flatbread pizzas and mac and cheese bites while watching crystal-clear movies from recliner seats that they reserved hours and even days ahead of time.

It’s all part of a new focus on the guest that AMC public relations director Ryan Noonan says has swept both AMC and the theater industry as a whole in the last few years. That’s been especially true in the Denver area, which Noonan said has seen among the most renovations and investment among AMC markets.

“What we saw is that guests really wanted this elevated moviegoing experience and they were no longer satisfied with just showing up and sitting in a seat and rubbing elbows with the person next to them,” Noonan said “They wanted to come sit in recliners, they wanted to enjoy better food, they wanted to have a beer as they watched a movie and they wanted to see it on a really big screen with the latest in projection technology. And as we’ve continued to provide that, we’ve seen more and more success and great guest feedback.”

Improvements can be costly Although each of those improvements represents a major investment on the part of theater operators, few match the costs of adding reclining seats, which not only require individual auditoriums to be closed during installation but also typically reduce their capacity by 50% to 60% once installed.

But while such a change would seem to represent a self-inflicted threat to theater bottom lines, Noonan said AMC has found it to be a net positive because theaters are now finding people are returning to theaters more often even if it means

The unique attraction that such seats offer became evident when the seats were first installed in an entire AMC theater in Seattle, Noonan said, and strong consumer enthusiasm for them has also been evident in the Denver area.

“Almost immediately what we saw (in that first theater in Seattle) were guests coming up to the box office and saying ‘I’d like to sit in a recliner to watch a movie’ and not ‘I’d like to go see this specific movie, what auditorium is it in?’” said Noonan.

have become increasingly standard in Denver and other markets throughout the country, they were anything but when a Texan named Tim League opened a theater called Alamo Drafthouse that combined inseat food and drink service with an old-school Hollywood vibe in Austin, Texas in 1997.

Alamo Drafthouse is credited by many in the industry with spearheading changing consumer tastes and the evolving nature of theaters in the Denver market has followed quickly from the opening of Alamo Drafthouse’s first area theater in Littleton in 2013 (additional locations have since opened in the Sloan’s Lake area and Westminster).

Englewood venue snags a major art exhibition Rauschenberg: Reflections and Ruminations now at Museum of Outdoor Arts

Starting with the glass entry doors at Museum of Outdoor Arts, Robert Rauschenberg’s work impacts a visitor — and it continues as one strolls through the large gallery at the Englewood Civic Center, and loops through a reprocessed office space. Then one reverses directions and heads down a fascinating hallway to two more spaces filled with the distinctive American artist’s works. MOA staff, with curator Dan Jacobs, has worked on pulling off this exhibit for a number of years and we are fortunate that it’s finally open through June 13.

Rauschenberg (1925-2008) painted, printed, photographed, drew, sculpted, assembled, experimented — and combined techniques as he wished. It’s especially appropriate that his exuberant work is exhibited during Mo’ Print (Month of Printmaking, March 2020) in the area, since his explosive works are a dramatic contrast to the smaller, tighter, more controlled images we tend to expect from a traditional printmaker.

connection: “I met Robert Rauschenberg at his home on Captiva Island in Florida in the early 1980s.” Her parents were friends of this charismatic man … The title of the exhibit: “Reflections and Ruminations,” refers to titles of works and the highly polished surfaces that carry some images. Jacobs may have started with John Madden, the director’s father, who owned several pieces, but the search took him across the country, as well as locating works at DU and CU. Works on reflective surfaces seem to include the visitor’s reflection as part of the art in prints on aluminum, brass or polished steel, and one realizes the title of the exhibit plays with one’s

perceptions …

A photograph to the left as one enters presents a profile of a good-looking man staring off into the distance — no doubt mentally picturing wild bursts of color and big strokes of brush or other implement. The outline of Rauschenberg’s hand also brings one in closer to an extraordinary man.

There are repeats of images such as skyscrapers and tires and cabbages … these images continue to his last series: “Lotus,” continuing into 2008, the year he died. He took photos himself — and used other images freely, including some historic ones.

Works include paintings, lithographs and “Combines,” one of which, “Autobiography,” includes an image of the artist with a parachute flying behind him as he skates forward …

“Accident,” (1963) included in this exhibit, is well known — the lithograph stone he was using cracked as he was b creating the image to be printed and o he just went ahead and completed the b work, including that crack. The edition o of repeats of this image shows slight d differences as the stone shifted a bit, l according to the catalog copy by cura- s 1 tor Jacobs.

A traveler, with concern for environ- 2 mental and human issues, Rauschenu berg interacted with the world as he i soaked up images. He started ROCI, the Rauschenberg Overseas Cultural m Exchange and images from the Soviet a t leg tried to show similarities in culC tures. ”Soviet/American Array VII” t shows New York and Moscow apartment buildings in a collection of other m a images.

Each grouping of works has a block a of wall copy, rather than a label on each painting, so a visitor may want to a focus in on each block of words for bet- t l ter interpretation of the exhibit.

“Reflections and Ruminations” offers i more than 50 original works by a man f D who was very influential in his own world and well beyond. The visitor can t try to follow thought processes, chang- w es in the use of repeated images and a variety of techniques. A work unto t a itself is “Barney Google Glut,” 1987, assembled metal collage. Is it a sort of p rhino? An entirely imaginary beast? b Or should we settle for an abstracted i sculptural image? Regal Cinemas, the nation’s second biggest theater chain and the operator of 13 theaters in Colorado, seemed to be following the Alamo model when it opened a Regal Cinebarre, its brand of dine-in theater, in Greenwood Village last year. The Cinebarre took over its space from Greenwood Plaza Stadium 12, an aging theater that had closed in 2018.

“This state-of-the-art theater is a unique destination that provides moviegoers with an enhanced entertainment experience as they watch movies and eat a great meal,” Heather Peters, the public relations director for Regal Cinemas, wrote in an email. “The theater features a complete restaurant menu, traditional movie treats, plus a full bar with handcrafted cocktails and satellite television.”

Even some of Denver’s most classic and longstanding cinema destinations are taking note of the changing landscape and responding accordingly. When damage from a burst pipe forced the historic Esquire Theater in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood to close in late 2018, many assumed it would never reopen.

But when it did so last summer, the theater’s guests were greeted with the addition of new theater seats, carpeting and flooring as well as a new box office and concession stand. The improvements continued this winter with the addition of alcoholic beverag-

es and an expanded concession menu.

“People increasingly expect to be able to grab a beer when they go out, and if we can have that for them it obviously keeps us in contention as far as a night out,” said the theater’s manager, Troy Lasley, who said alcohol has been popular at the theater.

Different angle on competition But will such changes allow theaters like the Esquire to stave off the challenge posed by Netflix, DisneyPlus and other in-home entertainment options?

Patrick Corcoran, the vice president

of the National Association of Theater Operators, says that’s not actually the right question. That’s because Corcoran and other industry insiders feel that movie theaters are not actually competing with streaming services.

“Our competition is primarily for people who want to get out of the house,” said Corcoran. “In terms of the home, the disruption has primarily been in the home whether it’s been with VCR or DVD or now streaming services.”

And that away-from-home experience market is one in which Noonan

said the theater industry continues to hold its own. For evidence of that success, he points to data that shows the film industry continues to sell around twice as many tickets as the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB professional sports leagues combined.

“I can’t think of a movie that’s been on a streaming service that’s ever got the amount of attention that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ got this year and that’s because movie theaters and movies up on the big screen are the cultural touchpoint for people that they gravitate towards,” Noonan said.

“And so while there will always be challenges, I think AMC and really the industry in general have done a really good job of pivoting to an elevated experience and I think guests have really responded.”

Outbreak forces teachers to reach students virtually From Parker, educators conduct classes for Chinese students

Jack and Laura Kriss consider themselves night school teachers for the time being.

At 5 p.m. in one corner of the Douglas County Library in downtown Parker, the Krisses set up two laptops in study chairs facing a window with a view of the mountains. Coffee in tow and snacks peeking out from a bag, the Krisses dug in for another night Feb. 12 of teaching stranded students in their homes in China and across the globe.

“If it weren’t for the coronavirus, we would’ve been on a plane Feb. 6 and back in China and classes would’ve started Feb. 10,” Jack Kriss said. “The virus has put us in a virtual environment. Our students are quarantined in their houses and we’re here and we’re able to work with them virtually.”

Since Feb. 10, the Krisses have led virtual classrooms with their collective 800-some middle- and high schoolaged students in Beijing, China, to ensure they don’t fall behind their peers. Both have full teaching schedules still — Jack teaches computer science for international baccalaureate students, Laura teaches middle school science courses. They teach at the library until it closes at 9 p.m.

Then they’ll go home to finish the rest of their courses until 12:30 a.m.

“It’s almost like being in a classroom, but we’re just not physically together,” Jack Kriss said.

The school is English-only, and the Krisses don’t speak Mandarin.

Students are able to translate questions in real time to stay engaged with a lesson.

Between the two, they have about 800 students to teach. From 5 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Mountain Time, the teachers complete lesson plans in a variety of subjects. NICK PUCKETT banned people from meeting in groups larger than three people in attempts to curb the spread of the coronavirus, a respiratory illness similar to SARS that has killed almost 1,400 people, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. China has almost 15,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

The Krisses are international educators who teach an American-style curriculum to students all over the world.

The couple have taught in places like Germany, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates since 2006. They arrived in Beijing in August to begin teaching at the Beijing Bilingual International Academy (BBIA).

When not abroad teaching, the two live in Parker. They returned to the U.S. Jan. 17 during the Chinese New Year celebration and planned to return to China Feb. 6. The coronavirus continued to spread in China. Their flight was pushed back to Feb. 14. Unit-

ed Airlines at some point canceled their flight back altogether. Jack Kriss said United Airlines won’t be making trips to China likely until April.

“Because of everybody’s use of technology, everybody’s picked up on it smoothly,” Jack Kriss said.

The students of BBIA have few options to continue their education, especially during a crisis that pro-

hibits group meeting. The semester was scheduled to reconvene Feb. 17.

Students who willingly leave the public-school system in China are not allowed to reenroll at another Chinese public school. Private schools are the last option for many students.

The students each join a Microsoft Teams video chatroom where Jack and Laura conduct their courses.

Falling behind for Jack’s IB students is particularly difficult for the kids, who need to take IB exams regularly to keep up with their international peers. Not all students are from China and they have to call in from their homes throughout the world. Jack Kriss said 10% of his students are not from China.

Jack Kriss said he doesn’t want the students to fall behind. In an increasingly competitive international education landscape, every day out of the classroom can be harmful to a student’s education.

“There’s a human side to this experience. There are children, parents, families who are not much different than any of us, who have been affected very negatively from this experience,” Jack Kriss said. “The education environment isn’t any different than what we see here in our own home. It’s a different culture, but they’re the same as us. They’re human beings. They should have the opportunity to learn, continue growing and continue doing things in an international world and not be isolated or closed out.”

Douglas County Libraries offers summer camps STAFF REPORT

While many Denver-area summer camps are already near capacity, opportunities abound at Camp DCL. Douglas County Libraries is offering a variety of enriching camps from June 1 to July 31 at six branches — Castle Pines, Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Parker and Roxborough.

Registration for the weeklong camps is open at DCL.org/camp-dcl.

The library’s summer camps are open to ages 5-12 and activities include cooking and baking, coding and programming, experiments in science, art through a variety of mediums, and LEGO building adventures.

Parents can choose from half-day camps or full-day camps at select DCL locations. Half-day camps are offered in morning and afternoon sessions, and full-day camps take place from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. All camps are facilitated by subject matter experts, and are supported by trained DCL staff and volunteers.

Before the start of the fourth quarter of Arapahoe’s second-round 5A girls state playoff game at ThunderRidge, coach Jerry Knafelc talked with his team — and they listened. ”When we came over at the end of the third, we got together and I told them we will determine our fate in this game,” Knafelc said. ”It will be on our play. We kept battling and got into the flow. We finally got comfortable with what we needed to do.”

Arapahoe outscored ThunderRidge 15-5 in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and record a 43-32 victory on Feb. 28.

The Warriors, 15-10 and the winners of six straight games, advanced to the Sweet 16, which was played March 3. Arapahoe, the 20th seed in the playoff bracket, played Centennial League foe and No. 4 seed Grandview, which beat Arapahoe twice during the regular season by a combined 112-59 score.

Arapahoe held a one-point lead over ThunderRidge heading into the final quarter but went on a 10-2 run

to take charge.

Junior Sam Shaw had a 3-point basket and two free throws to help ignite Arapahoe’s fourth-quarter surge. ”Obviously, we wanted basically to play hard in the fourth quarter, play together and play for the seniors because it could have been our last game if we lost” said Shaw. ”So I hit my shots and we hit our free throws and we won. We really turned it on.”

Arapahoe sank 8-of-11 free throws in the final 2:16 of the game to seal the win.

Senior Kali March was the Warriors’ leading scorer with 15 points while Shaw had 11 points, including three 3-point baskets, and also pulled down seven rebounds. Sophomore Sam Crispe seven points and eight rebounds.

ThunderRidge, the No. 13 seed, finished its season with a 17-7 record.

Senior Heidi Haze had nine points to pace the Grizzlies’ offense while senior Lindsay Anhalt added seven points for ThunderRidge, which had eight seniors on the roster. ”We just didn’t play our best game,” said ThunderRidge coach Samantha Gillmore. ”We weren’t playing our normal game. We kind of passed up shots, we passed up things and we weren’t doing what we normally do.

tate playoff action in 4A and 5A high school basketball started last week with the first two rounds, and there is nothing better that watching playoff action in any sport.

The intensity and competition in most games increases, and there is usually a surprise or two along the way to the finals.

In the Class 5A boys bracket, Rangeview was top-seeded and Valor Christian was the No. 1 seed in the girls Class 5A. I figured it would be good to talk with somebody that has been OVERTIME through playoff competition, so I reached out to Dick Katte, the winningest Colorado high school boys coach, with 867 victories in 48 seasons at Denver Christian, where Jim Benton he guided teams to eight state titles.

“I’m always anxious for these three weeks of the season,” said Katte, who watches many games during the season. “I love to watch the play, but in my heart it is the toughest thing that I still miss.

Those kinds of games, working with players and asking them to step up, is really an intangible thing.”

It seems to me that teams have to have a little luck, quality talent plus depth, good preparation, a winning demeanor and a confident mental attitude to succeed.

“I don’t know if I’ve seen enough teams to make any judgment on who should be considered,” said Katte about the boys 5A brackets. “I know that the goods are good. I’ve seen Rangeview. They are good. I’ve seen Grandview and they are good and I think Cherry Creek is very good.”

Here are a few more thoughts from Katte about the state tournament basketball playoffs.

“You know that if you are going to win the whole thing that somewhere along the way you are going to have to beat somebody that maybe you shouldn’t have,” offered Katte.

“When you did it as long as I did it, I think that there were times where we should have won but didn’t win the game that was on the line, but there were also times we did win when there were teams better than us.

Three south metro teams make hockey final four Valor, Chaparral and Regis Jesuit advanced in playoffs STAFF REPORT

Semifinal pairings for the state high school hockey tournament are set.

Top-seeded Valor Christian (18-2-1) will face two-time defending state champion and fifth-seeded Regis Jesuit (13-6-2) in a March 5 semifinal game at 5 p.m., which will be held at the Pepsi Center. Valor went 1-0-1 against Regis during the regular season.

Second-seeded Chaparral (16-2-3) will face thirdseeded Fort Collins (17-3-1) at 7:30 p.m. March 5 in the other semifinal game at the Pepsi Center. Chaparral downed the Lambkins, 3-2, in a regular-season contest.

In quarterfinal games held on Feb. 29, Valor outshot Pine Creek, 29-12, and got goals from Evan Pahos, Blake Rollison and Colton Carlson in a 3-0 victory.

goals to lead Regis to a 4-2 quarterfinal win over Denver East. Ralston Valley held a 41-26 advantage in shots on goal over Chaparral but the Wolverines got goals from Noah Youkin, Jackson Mundell and Owen Hardy to post a 3-2 victory.

It took two overtimes before Fort Collins collected a 2-1 win over Cherry Creek as Jason Campos got the game-winning tally in the second overtime.

Second round games were played Feb. 28.

Valor beat Kent Denver, 5-2, as Carlson scored twice and Mason Hoehn had a goal and three assists.

Regis beat Mountain Vista, 5-1, with Leighton Walsh getting two goals and an assist for the Raiders.

Younkin had two goals plus an assist to help Chaparral turn back Glenwood Springs, 6-3.

Logan Douglass tallied the goal for Castle View in a 9-1 loss to Denver East, while Benjamin Powell got what proved to be the game-winning goal as Cherry Creek edged Heritage, 2-1, in a second-round encounter.

Girls basketball playoffs: How local teams fared Top-seeded Valor Christian, defending champ Creek notch second-round wins STAFF REPORT

Top-seeded Valor Christian, defending state champion Cherry Creek, Regis Jesuit, Grandview, Highlands Ranch, Arapahoe and Cherokee Trail were south metro teams to notch second-round victories in the Class 5A girls state basketball playoffs.

Sweet 16 games were scheduled to be played March 3.

Valor made 59 percent of its field goal attempts in rolling to a 91-30 victory over the Far Northeast Warriors on Feb. 28, when all the second-round games were played.

The Eagles had five players in double digits, led by Mariah Hillard and Raegan Beers with 16 points each.

Cherry Creek, the No. 2 seed, used a double-double from senior Cali Clark, who had 25 points and 14 rebounds to sprint to a 77-55 victory over Horizon.

Regis grabbed a 54-11 halftime lead and went on to pound Liberty, 88-24.

Sophomore Lauren Betts scored 15 points to lead Grandview in a 76-28 win over Arvada West.

Payton Muma, Sarah Mitchell and Taylor Ray each finished with 14 points as Highlands Ranch routed Chatfield, 67-18.

Arapahoe’s strong fourth quarter pushed the Warriors to a 43-32 win over ThunderRidge. Dominique Rodriguez scored 16 points in Cherokee Trail’s 62-57 win over Lakewood.

In other second-round games, Rangeview posted a 55-41 conquest of Chaparral and Broomfield edged Mountain Vista, 49-48.

In the first round of the 5A playoffs on Feb. 25, No. 17 Chaparral jumped to a 31-11 halftime advantage and went on to record a 58-27 win over Grand Junction.

Senior Jessica Formento and sophomore Avery Bang each scored 16 and had six rebounds to pace the Wolverines.

Arapahoe, seeded 20th, rolled to a 61-30 victory over Douglas County as sophomore Sam Crispe had 14 points and senior Kali March added 13 for the Warriors.

Mountain Vista led 52-23 at halftime, finished with 26 steals to record a 80-45 win over Prairie View. Senior MacKenzie Gamble tossed in 19 points to lead four double-figure scorers for the Golden Eagles.

Lakewood made 12 3-point field goals in a 70-42 conquest over No.42 Rock Canyon. Doherty outscored No. 44 Legend 22-8 in the third quarter in an otherwise close game as the Spartans eliminated the Titans, 47-29.

Ponderosa and Littleton collected first-round wins in the 4A playoffs.

The Mustangs, seeded 18th, held Conifer scoreless in the second and third quarters in a 71-15 win over the Lobos. Junior Liberty Line made six 3-point field goals and scored 30 points for Pondo.

Littleton, seeded 34th, downed No. 31 Denver West, 58-44, as senior Jasmyn Thompson-Harvey and Ava Youngblood-Yazzi each scored 12 points and senior Brook Wolanin added 11 points for the Lions.

Susie Puchino had 11 of the 27 steals made by Littleton.

George Washington made a lastminute free throw to beat Ponderosa, 54-53, in the 4A second round.

Littleton hit only 13 percent of its field goal attempts in a 50-12 second round loss to Pueblo West.

Evans Scholars to receive $120,000 over four years to attend CU Boulder STAFF REPORT

Thirteen students from Colorado have been awarded the Evans Scholarship, a full housing and tuition college grant offered to golf caddies.

The final selections were made after interviews Jan. 28 at the Cherry Hills Country Club.

Each caddie has a unique story that reflects the scholarship’s four selection criteria: a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.

The students will begin college in fall 2020 as Evans Scholars at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The Evans Scholarship is estimated at $120,000 over four years.

“Each of these deserving Evans Scholars epitomizes what our program has been about since its creation in 1930,” WGA Chairman Kevin Buggy said in a news release. “Their dedication, hard work and sacrifice is humbling, and we are honored to be able to help them pursue their dreams.”

The selection meeting in Colorado was one of more than 20 such meetings the Evans Scholars Foundation will have across the country through the spring. When the 2019-20 selection meeting process is completed by April, an estimated 285 caddies are expected to be awarded the Evans Scholarship.

A record 1,010 caddies are enrolled in 18 universities across the nation as Evans Scholars, and more than 11,050 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded

Scholarship funds come mostly from contributions by 32,500 golfers across the country, who are members of the Evans Scholars Par Club program. Evans Scholars Alumni donate more than $14 million annually, and all proceeds from the BMW Championship, the third of four PGA Tour Playoff events in the PGA Tour FedExCup competition, are donated to the Evans Scholars Foundation.

Defending champion Cherry Creek, top-seeded Valor Christian, Grandview, Regis Jesuit and Ralston Valley all have strong teams that have the potential to advance.

Class 3A boys and girls basketball teams completed district play last weekend and the state hockey playoffs are ready for the semifinals on March 5.
