Bill seeking to ban same-sex marriage, adoption voted down Other, bipartisan bills tackle mental health, small-business contracts

Invoking the case of a Lakewood baker who refused to make a samesex wedding cake and took the issue to the Supreme Court, some Republicans in the Colorado Legislature pushed bills to prevent adoption by LGBTQ couples and ban sex transition treatment for minors.

Taking up the conflict between same-sex marriage and religious liberty, one bill referenced Masterpiece Cakeshop owner Jack Phillips, who declined to make a custom cake for a same-sex couple in 2012 because of his religious beliefs.

The wide-ranging bill — titled the “Live and Let Live Act” — sought to prevent the state from punishing religious organizations and individuals for denying certain services

to LGBTQ people. The bill would have protected actions ranging from declining to provide goods for a wedding, to making sex-based rules for employees’ or students’ clothes or access to restrooms.

“In an equal society, tolerance must be mutual,” the introduction to the bill read.

It was part of a slate of several measures that would deny services to LGBTQ Coloradans, all of which effectively had no chance of passing in the Democrat-controlled state House

and Senate. Each of those bills was defeated on a 3-6 vote, according to a news blast by House Democrats in the early morning Feb. 14. The vote took place in committee, meaning the bills did not reach a full vote on the House floor.

State House Minority Leader Patrick Neville, R-Castle Rock, and state Rep. Kim Ransom, R-Acres Green, were among the “Live and Let Live” bill’s sponsors.

A prominent LGBTQ advocacy organization dubbed the group of bills “the most aggressive slate of antiLGBTQ legislation introduced in the past decade.”

“In the first few weeks of this legislative session, we have seen attacks on transgender Coloradans, same-sex parents, LGBTQ youth and the list goes on,” Daniel Ramos, executive director of One Colorado, said in a news release. “These bills do not represent who we are as Coloradans.”

Neville and a House GOP spokesman did not respond to requests for comment.

Meanwhile, a pair of bills pushed by local Denver metro legislators

moved forward with bipartisan support. They sought to create a statewide mental health resource website and continue to help small businesses secure government contracts.

Here’s a rundown of the bills. The legislative session — the roughly four-month period in which bills are passed — kicked off Jan. 8.

Barring sex transition A bill called the “Protection of Minors from Mutilation and Sterilization Act” would have criminalized medical procedures for transgender individuals.

“A health care professional commits unlawful sex reassignment treatment of a minor if the person knowingly administers, dispenses, or prescribes a drug or hormone or orders or performs a surgical procedure for the purpose of facilitating sex reassignment of a minor,” the bill’s summary read.

North Star Academy receives school safety grant Douglas County dispersing money among local facilities

Another school received a lift in funding for school security and mental health programming on Feb. 11 as Douglas County commissioners continued approving contracts to execute grants they are awarding for

school safety in the county.

Parker-based North Star Academy will receive $177,826 to boost the physical security of its building and further mental health support for students. The K-8 charter school enrolled 664 students in the 2018-19 school year, according to its website.

Founder and Principal Kendra Hossfeld told commissioners the school is working with two architects to improve its front entry and will fund mental health training for students, staff and parents with the grant. Hossfeld said she’d wanted to bolster the school’s front entry since

she helped found it in 2006.

“Again, I want to thank you for helping us with the resources. We couldn’t do it without you,” Hossfeld said.

Board Chairman Roger Partridge told Hossfeld it was heartwarming for the board to hear directly from the school about the impact the grant would have on her community. Commissioner Abe Laydon said the grant would fund one of many solutions being employed in Douglas County to make schools safer.

“We all care about our kids and you can tell I get emotional about our

kids,” Commissioner Lora Thomas said as she choked up. “They are our future.”

She thanked Hossfeld for founding a charter school in the county and asked that the school invite the board to view the projects once they are complete.

Commissioners in May launched a $10 million grant process to heighten safety at local private, charter and public schools following a fatal shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch. Senior Kendrick Castillo died, and eight more students were injured in the May 7 tragedy.

Two indicted in hit-and-run, shooting on C-470 One of the suspects accused of firing gun at motorist

A motorist who attempted to stop another driver from escaping a hitand-run on C-470 has been indicted for shooting at the car, according to court documents.

Marc Simmons, who told police he is an employee for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, has been charged with illegal discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment in connection with the May 2019 incident. The driver accused of hitting a construction vehicle and then driving away also was indicted.

Simmons, 37, was driving eastbound near the Quebec Street exit when he saw a white Subaru hit a construction

vehicle, then drive away, according to the indictment. He and another driver followed the Subaru and tried to block it from escaping further.

Then, Simmons got out of his truck and shot at the Subaru, according to the indictment. Simmons later called 911 and told dispatch that he fired at the car.

The other driver blocking in the Subaru and a video taken by a witness confirmed that Simmons shot at the vehicle, according to the indictment.

When law enforcement arrived, they placed Simmons under arrest. While in custody, he told police he had shot at the man because he “was trying to help other people from being run over,” according to the document.

One witness told law enforcement she hadn’t seen the Subaru “make any movements like it was about to run over anyone,” according the indictment.

The video taken by a nearby driver

shows Simmons firing multiple shots at the white Subaru. Other cars can also be seen entering the highway from Quebec Street.

“These vehicles and their occupants were in the immediate vicinity of Simmons’ shots and subject to potential harm if struck by a stray round,” according to the indictment.

A tip from a Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office deputy led police to begin investigating Anas Giornazi, 31, who typically drives a white Subaru, for the hit-and-run. Since May 3, he had switched cars, according to the tipster.

Investigators were led to Giornazi’s home in Aurora, where they saw a white, Subaru-sized vehicle under a tarp. A search warrant for the vehicle revealed the car fit the description and license plate reported. It also had extensive damage, including a bullet hole, filled in and painted over, and a missing tire.

When testifying in front of a grand jury, Giornazi had an explanation for everything, according to the document.

The car had the bullet hole when he bought it, he said, and he had loaned his car to a friend the day of the incident.

His car was under the tarp because “it’s a known vehicle that gets stolen,” he said, according to the indictment.

When investigators reached out to the previous owner of Giornazi’s Subaru, he testified that the bullet holes had not been there when he sold it to the man. Giornazi was never able to provide any evidence that “Manu,” the man he said he loaned his car to, existed, according to the indictment.

Giornazi was indicted on charges of perjury, leaving the scene of an accident and careless driving. He was arrested Feb. 7 and does not yet have a court date.

Simmons will appear in court Feb. 28.

education staffing and $1.6 million for an employer-share in PERA rate increases. The district will also spend additional revenue on raises next year. The remainder, slightly more than $2.1 million, could be used for compensation.

School board President David Ray was quick to express his frustration.

“I wish I could have a happy face about this, because I’m really struggling just from the get-go that we have $2.1 million, maybe, best-case scenario, of additional revenue to apply to this issue,” Ray said. “So, where do we get the money, Mr. Smith?”

The available revenue came under scrutiny from some board members and teachers’ union leadership, who doubted more couldn’t be found in the district’s budget for compensation.

School board Director Anthony Graziano asked if the district could find more money for teacher pay through non-traditional revenue sources or elsewhere in the operation.

“Are we running the district optimally from all different areas from an operational side of things, building side of things, maintenance side of things?” he said. “I think there’s other areas that we could explore and look at revenue and funding.”

Directors Susan Meek and Elizabeth Hanson asked if cuts could be made anywhere in the district.

Smith said it would be difficult to pull from other places in the operation and find sustainable budgetary support for the plan, adding he doesn’t believe the district has overpaid teachers.

“Cutting your way out of it isn’t going to fix it,” Smith said.

Staff will not recommend cutting any teachers’ pay, Smith said, and it’s possible the state Legislature will produce bills that could aid school funding. He added the governor’s budget provides an increase to school funding, although it is the smallest increase in several years, and it is not yet finalized.

After hearing the budget overview, some directors criticized past boards for initiatives they said placed the district in the position it’s in today.

“I’ve heard it multiple times tonight, this did not happen just last year. This is a problem that has been created by individuals who sat up here years ago and we’re trying to unravel that problem,” Meek said.

“It’s actually what happens when you launch reckless experiments with people’s lives and livelihoods.”

Challenges ahead The draft schedule aims to be easily comparable to other districts and predictable for employees, Smith said. It focuses on increasing pay for new hires by raising their starting salary to $42,000.

“Our current starting salary of $39,000 is not competitive,” Smith said. “We know that other districts SEE PAY, P5

are higher than $42,000, but this is that step in the right direction.”

Hadden recalled knocking on doors to help the district pass its bond and mill levy override in November 2018.

He was pleasantly surprised to find strong support for local teachers among residents he met, he said, as they expressed how teachers impacted their children.

That left him all the more disheartened as he watched numerous teachers leave for higher-paying jobs in other districts, often in the Cherry Creek School District, he said.

“Who could begrudge a teacher for taking a teaching job a couple miles away for $10K-$15K difference in salary?” he said.

Under the draft schedule, Douglas County licensed staff would receive a 2.5% step increase, for years with the district, and a 3.5% lane increase for furthering their education. New hires with a bachelor’s degree would earn $42,000, while a doctorate holder at step 25 would earn $100,033.

Numerous factors beyond years of experience determine if an employee progresses in steps on a schedule.

Various positions would be eligible for annual stipends. There would be a $3,000 yearly stipend for hard-to-fill positions and a $6,000 stipend for special service providers or specialists, in two examples.

There are other hurdles to imple-

menting the draft schedule, Smith said.

More than 1,400 teachers are making less than what they should be if the draft schedule is adopted. Some are less than $1 from their proposed pay while others are more than $20,000 off. The average increase to bring them in sync is $3,700.

Roughly 2,200 teachers are making more than what the draft schedule proposes they should. Smith said determining how to address those positions would be tricky and discussed one option — directors could freeze those employees’ salaries, while those making less than they should receive cost-of-living increases.

Smith urged directors to place all new hires on whatever schedule they adopt and to also bring recent hires to the same base salary, so current employees aren’t paid less than those coming in.

“This took nearly a decade to get here. There is not going to be a solution on July 1 that addresses everything that everyone wants instantaneously,” Smith said. “We also want to make sure whatever we implement is affordable and sustainable. If we put in a salary schedule and immediately turn around the next year and freeze salaries, that kind of defeats the purpose.”

‘A full effort’ needed School board Director Christina Ciancio-Schor questioned if the district’s employee council, which is helping draft the schedule, was fully representative of the teaching com-

munity, a sentiment echoed by Kallie Leyba, president of the teachers’ union, the Douglas County Federation. The council has representatives from 20 schools. There are 50 additional district-run schools.

“This is going to take a full effort from everyone in this room reaching out to our community members, reaching out to our union groups as well,” Superintendent Thomas Tucker said.

Michelle Fleet, a member of the teachers’ union, is an English teacher at Douglas County High School who’s been with the district for 26 years.

She commended the draft schedule for addressing new hires but said it offered little competitive benefit for teachers who have been with the district for several years. She believes that would generate turnover.

“It’s not going to retain teachers when they pull up any surrounding district,” she said.

The school board in September celebrated improvement in retention among employees. The district, which calculates turnover differently from the state, found that licensed employee turnover has decreased in Douglas County every year since the 2015-16 school year.

Tucker said at the time the district still planned to improve compensation to become more competitive and aimed to address still-high turnover rates among classified employees.

The district plans to address classified employee pay as well at a later date, directors and Smith said Feb. 4.

In mulling over the draft schedule

presented Feb. 4, Fleet dug up her salary schedule from 2008 and 2009 as a comparison. What she found shocked her, she said.

A teacher at the level she was then — a 15-year veteran with a master’s degree plus 48 credit hours — would make $1,200 less on the draft schedule discussed Feb. 4 than they would 10 years ago.

“Are we really being competitive? Is this really fair?” Fleet said.

Leyba — whose union does not have a collective bargaining agreement with the district — said the presentation left her with “disappointment and frustration.” It lacked details about the budget, she said, and generated more questions than answers.

Smith cautioned the Feb. 4 meeting was early to be discussing the budget and numbers in the presentation will change.

Leyba suggested the district tap its reserves to boost teacher pay or reprioritize the budget to focus on compensation.

Both she and Fleet believe the board supports teachers but said if the district wants to attract and retain top teachers, it will take a more compelling schedule than the one presented Feb. 4.

Chief Human Resources Officer Amanda Thompson said the next steps are for staff to continue meeting with the district’s employee council to work on compensation.

Staff could propose an official stepand-lane model option on April 7. The board plans to approve raises and a salary structure on May 1.

Parent University tries to untangle confusion Program aims to get parents involved in children’s education

One minute a teenager could be happily texting with friends. The next they’re raging at their parents. And before mom and dad can blink, the teen is back to cracking jokes in the group chat.

Was what just happened typical teenage mood swings, or something more serious?

Kristen Giltinan, a psychiatrist with the Colorado Psychiatry Center, walked a room full of Douglas County parents through the differences between bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder and their treatment options during a Feb. 12 event in Lone Tree.

The goal was to help parents tell if their children may have a more serious condition or are just experiencing the unpredictable moods swings common among teenagers.

Numerous factors can influence a teen’s behavior, she said. Anxiety, lack of sleep, stress from school, social pressures and, sometimes, a behavioral health condition.

Hands shot up when Giltinan asked how many parents in the room struggled getting their children to go to bed at a good time. Bipolar disorder can affect sleep patterns, but so can the daily pressures on kids in life and school.

“Teenagers are moody by nature because they’re having lots of things happening. Their hormones are going.

It’s not easy being a teenager in this world,” she said.

Giltinan’s lecture was the second of five seminars being offered to the community for free this school semester as part of what’s called Parent University. The program is a partnership between the Douglas County School District and Sky Ridge Medical Center.

Parent University aims to get parents and caregivers involved in their children’s schools and education — and generally help them navigate parenthood. The seminars put them faceto-face with experts on various topics, some focused on raising children and others focused on education.

“We hope to provide the resources and the opportunities for parents to engage with their children at school and after school,” Communication Coordinator Stacy Blaylock said of the school district.

This semester has already covered responsible driving and teen mood swings. Upcoming seminars will address responding to signs of suicide, preparing students for college and careers and gifted education.

Nearly 100 people registered for the Feb. 12 seminar on teen mood swings.

Blaylock said the most popular or well-attended seminars have covered teen vaping, driving, and the Feb. 12 seminar on moods.

The Feb. 12 Parent University seminar aimed to help parents determine the difference between bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder and moodiness that’s common among teens.

“As a district we’ve been doing quite a bit of exploration and emphasis in social emotional learning, and everyone understands that it’s more than just grades that make a successful student,” Blaylock said. “In many ways we’re trying to tailor it to what parents need as well.”

The program began a couple years ago and is still in its infancy stages, Blaylock said. Organizers are gathering feedback from attendees to see what was helpful and what they’re hoping to learn from seminars. In the future they may look at incorporating early childhood development resources for parents of children younger than high school.

No challengers file for Lone Tree City Council election

As the candidate filing deadline approaches, Lone Tree’s three council incumbents look poised to be reelected without opposition.

Lone Tree Mayor Jackie Millet and councilmembers Cathie Brunnick (District 2) and Wynne Shaw (District 1) are the only ones to have picked up a petition to circulate to be reelected to their posts through 2024. Lone Tree’s municipal election is scheduled for May 5. If no other interested candidates submit a petition for candidacy — signed by 25 residents in their respective districts — the election will be canceled.

Millet, Brunnick and Shaw would be reappointed.

Petitions are due Feb. 24. Petitions are available at the city clerk’s office during business hours until then.

Millet would serve her second term as mayor. Millet was elected to coun-

cil in 2008, spending the last four as mayor pro tem. Before that, Millet served on the planning commission from 2004-08. Millet was elected mayor in 2016.

The three were on council through the opening of the Leaf Pedestrian Bridge in 2018 and the completion of the Southeast Rail Extension in 2019.

Millet was a finalist to take over for RTD’s retiring general manager and CEO Dave Genova. Millet currently serves as vice chair of the Metro Mayor’s Caucus, a committee of 40 mayors from the Denver area.

Council has been vocal about supporting public-private partnerships with special districts and business partners to curb costs of city infrastructure improvements and development. Millet said she hopes to continue “to execute on the vision of a complete community” and “to ensure the growth of our community enhances the quality of what we already have.”

Presidential primary ballots due March 3 STAFF REPORT

Voters registered as Democrat, Republican or unaffiliated are eligibile to vote in this year’s presidential primary election. Ballots must be returned by 7 p.m. March 3.

Registered Democratic and Republican voters should have received one mail ballot for their party’s presidential primary election.

Colorado lawmakers inch forward on transportation deal How to pay for projects is wild card, with big political risks

Behind the scenes at the Capitol, in private meetings and hushed conversations, Colorado lawmakers are talking about how to find a legislative unicorn: a bipartisan deal to find more money for transportation.

The negotiations started an impasse, only adding to the frustration felt by the advocates behind three failed prior election campaigns, but began slowly as both parties recognize it remains a top concern with voters.

Democratic House Speaker KC Becker, a lead negotiator, said the new talks are progressing and she’s “encouraged by the initial willingness to put together sort of a bipartisan package.” But she acknowledges the deal is far from reality — and the political risks are significant.

“All things are on the table right now, but what I think realistically can get done is probably of a much more limited nature,” the Boulder lawmaker said in an interview.

Americans for Prosperity’s Colorado chapter is airing 15-second commercials on screens at gas pumps in the Denver area that urge people to tell lawmakers that “Colorado families can’t afford to pay more at the pump.”

The advocacy effort also includes mailers targeting key lawmakers, online ads and radio commercials.

It was first reported Feb. 11 in The Unaffiliated, the twice-weekly political newsletter from The Colorado Sun. The five-figure initial cost for the campaign is modest, but the effort serves as a warning shot to the negotiators at the state Capitol and the group’s spending could increase.

“People need to voice their opinions now on this if they really want to impact such an important issue down at the Capitol,” said Jesse Mallory, the organization’s state director.

AFP — which is backed by billionaire Charles Koch — fought against prior efforts to increase taxes to generate money for transportation.

The group argues that Colorado lawmakers are spending too much money and should prioritize road construction above other needs.

The advertising suggests that lawmakers want to repeal the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights and eliminate the requirement that voters approve tax hikes, but the effort to revamp TABOR is actually coming from liberal organizations outside the building.

Becker, who is one of the lawmakers targeted by the mailers, confirmed that new taxes or fees are part of the current discussion about a transportation spending bill. The main revenue source for road projects is the gasoline tax, but it has remained stagnant for nearly three decades and is a diminishing source of revenue.

“There’s some level of agreement that there has to be some new source of revenue,” she said.

“Exactly what that is going to be is still in the works.”

In addition to the gasoline tax, lawmakers are also discussing additional fees on electric vehicles based and ride-sharing, as well as earmarking existing tax dollars for roads and transit needs.

The politics of a tax or fee hike

are unpredictable. Sen. Chris Holbert, the Republican leader, doesn’t support an increase in the gasoline tax and would rather see at least $300 million in existing revenue put toward road construction. But he has acknowledged there could be an appetite.

“There are Republicans, there are conservatives, who have the perspective that if you’re going to ask me for money, ask me for it the right way. And the gas tax pays for transportation,” the Parker lawmaker said.

Still, Holbert said Democratic efforts to increase fees or taxes would backfire and result in big GOP wins in the November election. Becker said she agrees that there is a political risk, but she clarified later: “I don’t think it means we should back away from trying to do something.”

One other transportation funding model proposed this year is House Bill 1151 to allow local governments to create regional districts to raise money for their specific projects.

But it also faces political opposition — in this case from Gov. Jared Polis. At a recent event, he said lawmakers should not create a solution “that only works for urban Colorado and suburban Colorado.”

“That’s not the best way for the state from a business perspective,” Polis added, saying it limits interconnectivity.

DA citizens academy application period open District attorney’s office spring session to shed light on judicial process STAFF REPORT

Residents interested in learning more about the judicial process can apply for the 18th Judicial District’s spring citizens academy.

The free, seven-week program takes place from 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays from April 8 to May 20 at the Douglas County office, 4000 Justice Way, Castle Rock.

Each of the seven classes explores the role of various members of the office. The academy gives students an in-depth look at what happens between the time someone is arrested, all the way through trial and conviction.

Attendees will explore the functions of the specialized units in the district attorney’s office, including the special victims unit, economic crimes unit, cold case unit, crime scene investigations, county court

and juvenile justice. Students also will have the chance to learn the intricacies of a jury trial.

Limited spaces are available. Preference will be given to applicants who live in the 18th Judicial District and are first-time attendees. Participants must be at least 18 years old, complete an application and pass a criminal background check.

Aspen Grove left with photos after studio’s sudden closure Hundreds of family pictures await owners at shopping center

Hundreds of family portraits are piled in the Aspen Grove shopping center’s management office awaiting their owners, after the Portrait Innovations photo studio closed suddenly after Christmas.

The studio is one of dozens of Portrait Innovations locations that closed without warning in the final days of 2019, according to news reports from around the country.

“We had no notice,” said Aspen Grove spokeswoman Allysen Santilli.

“They fired everyone, locked the door, and that was it. We’re as surprised as the customers, and it affects us as landlords too.”

Portrait Innovations left everything behind when they closed, Santilli said, including furnishings, photography equipment — and photos belonging to more than 200 people. The studio had operated at Aspen Grove since 2006.

Because management doesn’t have keys to individual shops, Aspen Grove management went to court to gain access. A judge’s ruling allowed management to re-key the store, and Aspen Grove staff retrieved the hundreds of photo prints.

Worse, Santilli said, are those orders that weren’t printed or completed before the store shut down. Those customers should dispute the charges with their bank, she said.

Portrait Innovations, which was based in North Carolina, declared bankruptcy in 2017, according to court records. The case was closed in October 2019, but the company was still tens of millions of dollars in debt.

Locations from coast to coast closed around New Year’s, according to news reports. The company’s website and Facebook pages have been taken

down.

Reporters who visited the company’s headquarters in North Carolina found the doors locked and the lights off. Owner John Grosso did not answer multiple phone numbers listed for him, and reporters got no answer at his Charlotte, North Carolina home.

Santilli said a photo studio creates meaningful products for people, and it was sad to see how Portrait Innovations treated customers.

“Lots of people have been coming for years,” Santilli said. “There’s heart behind these pictures.One mother had newborn pictures taken. They’re not a newborn anymore. I spoke with a grandma who told me she got her photo taken because she didn’t know how much longer she’d be around and wanted to leave a nice photo for her grandkids.”

April Lahr said she has been getting family photos at Portrait Innovations twice a year for the last eight years — once in the summer for her kids’ birthdays, and again every Christmas.

She drove to Portrait Innovations from Parker twice in January trying to get her most recent round of photos.

“The first time I thought maybe the manager had just stepped out for lunch,” Lahr said. “The second time I realized something was wrong. I’m really thankful Aspen Grove is stepping up.”

The JCPenney photo studio at Park Meadows mall in Lone Tree is offering free Portrait Club memberships to former Portrait Innovations clients, said studio manager Melissa Falkenberg.

The membership gives clients free sitting fees for two years.

Portrait Innovations’ closure wasn’t a surprise to Falkenberg, who worked for the company for years before going to JCPenney.

“It’s a dying business,” Falkenberg said of old-school portrait studios. “In the era of digital photography, everyone’s a photographer. The difference with a portrait studio is we’re professionals who undergo a lot of training to give you the best presentation.

We’re trained to work with children, and we handle all the prints as well.”

In the meantime, Aspen Grove management is working on selling or disposing of the furniture and equipment left behind at Portrait Innovations, while tracking down the owners of the photos.

“We’re working extra hard,” Santilli said. “We’re always here for our customers.”

Noir films are satisfying dark blend

T

he misquote “The stuff that dreams are made of ” concludes what great 1941 noir film?

The answer and some interesting information about the film come later.

Every Sunday in the mid-1970s, a Phoenix televiQUIET sion station showed one of the fourteen DESPERATION Basil RathboneNigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes films.

I was already an avid reader of Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels and short stories and became an avid follower of the filmed versions Craig Marshall as well.

Rathbone’s SherSmith lock Holmes is the superior depiction, although I welcomed Jeremy Brett’s 41 appearances as Holmes for Granada Television between 1984 and 1994.

A weekly film theme has been a Sunday routine ever since cable and

Turner Classic Movies first provided the opportunity to record and save.

I now dedicate each month to one film genre, director, actor or actress.

Noir, silent, screwball, foreign, Hitchcock and Keaton are among them.

And when Sunday is also a snow day and I have no particular place to go, the tubular hound and I spud in front of the television and nod in agreement that there is nothing better.

Certain genres aren’t allowed: excessively violent, super hero, outer space opera, and anything that suffocates in its own special effects.

I have never watched “Gone With the Wind” and other epics, and stay away from certain performers like Jerry Lewis and Charlton Heston, with one exception.

Heston appeared in the Orson Welles’ directed “Touch of Evil,” which features one of the best-known opening sequences in film history: an uninterrupted, tracking shot lasting three minutes and twenty seconds.

I have watched some films more than once. More than twice. More than

The Trinity Lutheran decision was applied to a nearly identical school funding issue and the U.S. Supreme Court instructed Colorado courts to follow the Trinity Lutheran decision, vacating a contrary Colorado decision. While Douglas County has no immediate plans to provide additional funding for school safety, it is important to clarify that Douglas County has not violated any law by providing funding to improve school safety and mental health for students, for any school.

Fields appeared in two of the funniest movies ever made: “The Bank Dick” and “It’s a Gift.”

If I am in any condition to choose, I want “It’s a Gift” to be my final film, before, as it were, the big sleep.

Top performers share their secrets to success

O

ne myth about top performers in any field is that they tend to keep their secrets of success to themselves. Engaging in conversations with very WINNING successful WORDS senior executives, topperforming sales and business leaders, and high-achieving athletes, the more information I seem to Michael Norton gather. And not only that, I find them really open to sharing some of their very best practices.

The myth has been around for a while. Some sort of belief that top performers in any field like to hold on

to their secrets so that they can maintain a comfortable lead over the competitors, internal rivals, and sometimes teammates. Well that may be true for a few top performers who only care about themselves, but not for the majority.

The majority live with an abundance mentality. They also know that they do not ever want to commit the sin of the desert. The sin of the desert, as told by a Bedouin shepherd, “Is knowing where there is water but refusing to tell others.”

Top performers and successful people typically like to help others. Not so much by giving a handout, but always willing to give a hand up. And there is a big difference between the two.

ime flies. The holidays are a brief memory, winter is more than half over and we’re looking forward to spring. With spring comes the deadline for filing your tax return. So, don’t let time slip away from you before you are able to gather all of your information to potentially get all the FINANCIAL benefits of the lowest STRATEGIES tax liability possible.

Competition in every industry and at every level of sports is at an all-time high. The job market is tight and tough right now. Everyone is looking for that slight edge. Being prepared, doing research, understanding how to leverage data are all great ideas to help us understand how to position value in our company, our products, and ourselves.

However, one of the very best things we can do, my own best practice and secret to success, is to meet with and talk with the top performers and high achievers in the business or in the game.

Again, maybe some people who live with a scarcity mentality may not be willing to share what they know.

And just like people in general, and by human nature, top performers and

You may find you are very close to the standard deduction limit, which is $24,400 for Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) for 2019. If that is the case, you might consider bunching your deductions every other year. So, for example, you could take the standard deduction for 2019, then in 2020, double up your charitable contributions. This could allow you to use up the $10,000 limit with property taxes and state taxes paid during the year. If you don’t have a paycheck where you are paying Colorado state tax during the year, and you are not paying Colorado estimated payments, there may be room to double up on your property taxes.

This means that in December you can call the county and get an estimate of what your property taxes will be for the following year and pay all or some of them in 2020. Then, you may be able to itemize on your 2020 tax filing and take the standard deduction the following year. The standard deduction will increase by $200 for single filers and $400 for joint filers for 2020.

Tax time is a good time to consider updating your financial plan as well.

You are already collecting the W-2, tax withholding, investment sales, dividends and small business revenue and expenses. You might as well finish updating your plan at the same time.

Another item to consider is increasing your 401(k) contributions for the new limits for 2020, which is now $19,500 with an additional $6,500 catch up for workers 50 years of age or older.

For those funding IRAs, the limits increased to $6,000 with a $1,000 catch-up.

This is also a good time to take a look at your investments. Perhaps in December you avoided rebalancing your investment portfolio to avoid having more capital gains tax to pay. Well, now it may be time to take another look. We are still under a lower long-term capital gain tax rate and this could be a good time to rebalance, depending on your situation.

Long term capital gains (LTCG) — those assets held for more than 12 months — qualify for the special long-

term capital gains rate. Joint filers can earn up to $80,000 taxable income this year and pay zero on LTCG. Joint filers over the $80,000 limit will still only pay 15% on LTCG up to $496,600 of taxable income. These are relatively low tax rates for the ability to trim profits and potentially reduce the overall risk in your portfolio.

Tax planning is a year-long event.

One of the schools mentioned in a recent article happens to be a Christian school. A letter writer recently took umbrage at that action. Don’t all our children deserve protection? After all, these students’ parents pay taxes for schools in Douglas County. Shouldn’t that entitle them to the same security as our public institutions? Keeping our kids safe is the issue — not promotion of any particular religion.

UNLIMITED Sensory- and memory-friendly events give opportunities for expression

he Barros family has difficulty finding programs they all can attend.

“We try to take them to events as much as I can, but the kids at this age don’t pay attention for an hour,” Fernando Barros said.

Following a Jan. 12 sensoryfriendly program at the Lone Tree Arts Center, Barros said he was lucky to be close to the arts center for its regularly scheduled programming of shows open to kids who may need to blurt or move around during a theater show or who have sensitivities to light or sound.

The strict etiquette of theater performances or art galleries can be difficult to follow for people with disabilities or those suffering from memory loss. Throughout Denver, arts and culture venues are offering specialized programs for those who need special attention. “Arts for all” programs give families a place to enjoy the arts without worrying about being a disturbance to others.

“We want families to feel like they have a place to come and feel welcome at the theater,” said Robin Scurto, annual giving director at the Lone Tree Arts Center who oversees the arts-for-all programs. “However they enjoy they arts, they’re allowed to do that.”

A sensory safe place Sensory-friendly programming is the heart of the Lone Tree Arts Center’s “arts for all” initiative. Arts for all programs are becoming more common staples to local arts centers.

Facilities including the Butterfly Pavilion, Denver Aquarium, Denver Museum of Nature & Science and Denver Botanic Gardens offer sensory friendly hours as well.

Low-sensory programming can look different based on the facility. Lone Tree Arts Center hands out fidget objects and a quiet room for kids to cool off if needed. Arts centers in Arvada, Littleton and Parker all have some sensory friendly programming. Many partner with Phamaly Theatre Company, a Denver-based theater group made up of people with disabilities.

Darion Ramos, company production manager at Phamaly, said most low-sensory programs aims to limit surprises, flashing lights and loud noises, for the most part.

everyone is comfortable,” Ramos said. “It feels less intruding if parents take their kids to the sensory-friendly performance.”

Different shows are modified in different ways to accommodate sensitive kids. The house lights are dimmed to half, microphones and sound effects are tempered and families are allowed more space between themselves and others. No clapping is allowed. Instead, the audience is asked to applaud in American Sign Language, which looks similar to jazz hands.

Before the show, actors and any scary characters are introduced. A sensory-friendly guide will assist families in the lobby.

“Bottom line, it’s important to have that space for people so everyone can come out and enjoy theater and be comfortable,” Ramos said. “No matter what’s going on the world, theater is one of those releases … Just because you can’t sit still in your seat or have to make noises and be yourself doesn’t mean you can’ t come to the theater because other people are going to care.”

Tapping into memories Once a week the Colorado Alzheimer’s Association visits with one of 90 arts centers in the state to lead a group of Alzheimer’s patients in watercolor classes. The Memories in the Making

program gives patients the opportunity to express themselves through painting.

“It’s amazing how you see different people’s personal styles come out and the way they move the brush and the color choices they make, how far they go to the edges of the paper,” said Lisa Steffan, Memories in the Making art program coordinator. “There’s a lot of personal expression in the style in the way they work.”

The Memories in the Making program has been offered by the Colorado chapter since 1994. Each week, a group paints in watercolors based on either an image or an object. Painting helps the artists express their emotions or feelings that lead to deep memories. The most important part of the process is the interaction the artist has with one of the group facilitators. Through casual conversation, the artists tap into memories the facilitator will write on the back of each painting.

Artists can take several weeks to finish a single piece, but the end goal is not necessarily the painting. The effects of expressing oneself through painting can last for days at a time, Steffan said.

“We often talk about how it depends on using what they have. Not focusing on what they’ve lost but focusing on what they can still do in the present moment,” Steffan said. “Painting has a soothing quality to it that, once they get started on something and get into a groove, they’re not focused on somebody telling them what to do.”

At a Lone Tree Arts Center Jan. 30 SPARK! event, a partnership program between the Alzheimer’s Association and local art centers, patrons were asked to interpret what they saw in a collection of abstract-realist paintings from the late Joellyn Duesberry, a Denver painter. Some saw a horse’s face in the rocks of a cascading waterfall or dirt mounds from fox holes in a painting of piles of chili peppers in a Peruvian desert. What they saw helped unlock memories from their past.

“You don’t need to remember what you ate for breakfast to be able to look at a painting and have an opinion,” Scurto said.

Animal art brings sense of life to gallery

The Littleton Fine Arts Guild postponed its opening reception for the “Animals, Tame and Wild” exhibit due to snow. The reception will now be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 at the Guild’s Depot Art Gallery, 2069 W. Powers Ave., downtown Littleton, in the cozy red gallery that has been home to the guild’s many members for years after really serving the city as a railroad depot.

The building’s busy 19th-century period was followed by a period of sitting alone in what became known as Bega Park, awaiting a new role in Littleton’s scene. The Guild raised money and obtained a grant in 1976, the Bicentennial year, to restore it and the late Varian Ashbaugh moved the building to its present site north of the Buck Recreation Center — and still near railroad tracks. Members scrubbed and polished and now volunteer to host guests when the gallery is open. (The building is owned by the City of Littleton.)

Members’ entries were juried by Sandra Jean Ceas, whose work will be found just inside the front door. We assume she will attend the rescheduled reception if available. It’s always fun to hear a juror speak about how they assemble an exhibit. What do they look for? Because the gallery is not very large, one doesn’t find many big artworks here, and the ways in which they are presented and skill with which they are rendered still varies greatly.

room holds a collection of painted glass vases and other forms, in bright hues — the work of artist Chris Schranck — such as “Fish on Red Vase.” It’s really hard not to stroke these! Also on that table: some delicate fiber baskets, reminiscent of softly hued rag rugs. They are crafted by Kathy Meyers.

Jeff Velarde’s “Made in the Shade,” the largest canvas in the exhibit, shows a sunlit terracotta tile floor, with fancy chairs providing shade for the resident fur person. Nice example of painting skill with numerous textures and colors. One would like to stop by for tea in this space …

Walk a bit farther and find Carl Paulson’s “Lunch,” a bright-eyed critter with a mouth full of green leaves.

On that same theme, several folks sit at an outdoor café are surveyed by a pudgy pooch — “What’s for Lunch?” is Pat Dall’s title. And then, there’s Loren Gilbert’s majestic blue heron wading and obviously searching for the aforementioned lunch.

One thinks of “Lions and tigers and bears … oh my!” But here there are also eagles and egrets and elegant blue herons, as well as more than one in-charge sort of domestic feline, mysterious wolves, a roly-poly panda and Joe Bonita’s photograph, “Synthetic Zebra,” which stares at the visitor who walks to the back room in the gallery. Nearby is his vision of Serengeti plains in subdued, sun-baked tones.

One imagines it to be full of wild creatures …

Jill Quillan contributes a perky “Roadrunner” as a wall piece, in addition to her brilliantly colored painted silk scarves, which would provide one with a nice pick-up on a wintery day.

She says “Life is short — buy silk!”

Dee Chalkey’s handmade miniature books include vintage images printed on poly clay on the covers. Also in the back room is Karen Shaw’s pleasing monotype print, “Song Birds,” which creates a birdsong in one’s imagination immediately.

Several members create handsome jewelry that might make a new outfit with a favorite dress or jacket — or call for a specific new color to show it at its best. These pieces sell well so there are always new artworks to contemplate when the art lover stops by for a visit. Admission is free.

Brothers Ryan and Luke of Lone Tree took to the snow for some sledding Feb. 15. The boys found a slope at the Lone Tree Golf Club and took advantage of the fresh blanket of the white stuff.

The brothers sculpted a snowy ramp to propel them from the sidewalk, which cut through their snowy hill. Often, they crash landed in a

snowbank, but it was all worth it for a few hours of February fun.

The recent snowstorms have blanketed the city in a sheet of white, but warm weekend days gave Lone Tree residents an excuse to enjoy the bout of nice weather. The temperature reached 50 degrees over the weekend, following back-to-back snowstorms the week prior.

The Lone Tree Golf Club is a popular place for residents to walk, jog or sled.

Tom Munds: 1937-2020

‘He loved our community’ For decades, reporter told Englewood’s stories through words and photographs

Tom Munds captured high school football games on camera. He dutifully took notes at virtually every city council meeting in his time. He put a spotlight on community events.

He wrote stories other media outlets didn’t care to tell.

For several decades, if it happened in Englewood, Munds was there.

Munds’ passion for the city and its people was evident to Englewood Mayor Linda Olson, who met the Denver resident a decade ago when she first ran for city council.

“He loved our community, even though he didn’t live in it,” Olson said.

“He really liked Englewood, liked our kids, cared about our athletics and our schools. I think that’s kind of unusual to have that depth of care for the community even when you don’t live in it.”

In his heart, Englewood was home for Munds, who died Feb. 6 after a battle with cancer. He was 82.

Munds’ career covering Denver-area communities spanned more than 40

in his mother’s Chinese restaurant — Twin Dragon on South Broadway — taking photos and snagging quotes in the crowd at Chinese New Year events.

“It made it feel like a smaller town,” said Jefferson, Englewood’s municipal judge. “I realized he made us feel a little bit special and part of the community, and I realize we weren’t the only ones he made feel that way.”

REMEMBERING TOM MUNDS A memorial service for Tom Munds is expected to take place at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 4400 W. Kenyon Ave., in Denver, likely in May, but plans are still being solidified.

Charitable donations in memory of Munds can be made to the nonprofit Casa Unida Foundation, which works with people in Nicaragua to mitigate poverty in that country. Munds went on several mission trips there through Casa Unida.

“There are communities, people I met, that if I don’t live next door to you, I wouldn’t know your name,” Munds said in his final weeks. “Englewood is like an old-fashioned community where — not everybody, but particularly the older families — they have that neighborly thing. A lot of them know each other’s name.”

Randy Penn, a former Englewood mayor who coached sports at Englewood High School for decades, admired Munds’ relentlessly personal touch as a reporter.

“He makes a personal effort to get to

Today, memories of Munds are still fresh around the city.

‘Banner years’ Munds was born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, where a strained family dynamic with his father led his mother to move with Munds to Miami, where his half-sister lived, in his teenage years. He graduated in 1955 from Miami Senior High School and almost immediately enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, with dreams of becoming a pilot.

Munds ended up going to military tech school in Mississippi, eventually listening to Russian radio transmissions in Morse code and copying them in Alaska.

He spent 21 years in the Air Force, including service in the Vietnam War. He eventually landed as a public information officer at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, writing for the base’s newspaper and freelancing for the Sentinel newspaper chain.

He retired from the service in late 1976 and went on to complete his journalism degree at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

In 1977, the Sentinel chain hired him to report on and take photos of high school sports at nine schools, including Englewood High. The beat was eventually pared down to schools in Englewood and neighboring Littleton.

In 1986, he was assigned to cover the entire community of Englewood, which he did for the next 30-plus years.

He spent most of that time working for the Englewood Herald. His articles appeared on the pages of the Herald and sister papers as recently as spring 2019.

“It was so much fun,” Munds said in January. “My years with the paper were banner years for me.”

Chris Rotar, managing editor of Colorado Community Media, which owns the Herald, worked with Munds for 12 years.

“To many people in the community, Tom was the Englewood Herald,” Rotar said. “But Tom was more than an old-school newspaper reporter. He was a humanitarian, a historian, a father and a friend.”

‘Heart was full’ Munds loved reminiscing about his wife, Alva, who died on Feb. 3, 2011.

He met her in May 1958 on a Greyhound bus as a young Air Force Airman First Class, when she climbed

aboard as a group of rowdy men also walked on. She asked if she could sit with Munds.

“I found out that her grandma lived two blocks from my grandma in Portsmouth — we knew all kinds of people that each other knew,” Munds said in January.

They were engaged 10 days later, and married on Aug. 18 of that year in Mobile, Alabama.

“We were married 53 years until she passed away,” Munds said. ‘’She was a marvelous woman.”

They had three children, Gayle, Martha and Thomas. Martha Munds died about a decade ago. Gayle Munds remained a close presence in her father’s life and remembers his playful side: When she was young, her father dressed up as Santa Claus, and she and her siblings didn’t know it was him. His wife kissed Santa, which shocked the kids — and Munds and his wife laughed about it all.

“It was a loving home,” Gayle Munds, 60, said. “Whenever I got in trouble or needed help, he was there.”

She went with her father on trips to Nicaragua, where Munds traveled for mission trips through the nonprofit Casa Unida Foundation, helping to build a school and giving away gifts such as wooden toys and baseball gloves.

“A kid in Nicaragua, that was the first personal toy that was his — he was 6 years old ...,” Munds said.

“When that little boy stood against the wall crying because that’s the first toy he had ever owned personally, my heart was full.”

Even near the end of his life, he still planned to give back.

“Lord willing ... I want to see if there’s a way I can continue to help others in some small way,” Munds said.

‘Hands-on’ reporter In the mid-1970s, Penn began coaching football and track at Englewood High.

“We almost instantly became friends,” Penn said. “We went out and ate together, and he traveled with us on the (football) team bus and sometimes the track bus.”

Munds became such a fixture in EHS sports that he’d chat with Penn about strategy before games and would go out to eat with the team afterward — he even rode with the team to faraway parts of the state such as Alamosa and Palisade, and he’d chat with the kids.

Munds also covered Penn in a different role, as a watchdog reporting on the Englewood City Council. Munds’ personal approach allowed him to get closer to the story.

“He’d call sometimes (after council meetings) and find out who are some of my contacts to talk to, why I chose the way I did, what were some of the big points and where the direction of the council was leading,” Penn, mayor from 2011-15, said.

Munds sat in the council chambers so often that he came to be known as the “eighth member of council,” with the seven-member body jokingly referring questions to him during meetings.

“Because he was there every single night without fail, we’d sometimes turn to him and say, ‘Do you remember that, Tom? We can’t remember — do you remember?’ “ laughed Olson, who lauded Munds as “a real hands-on kind of journalist.”

‘A good man’ Ask Munds how he was doing, and

there was a good chance he’d give this answer: “Mean, grouchy and hard to get along with. Same as usual.”

Truth is, he did not have any problems making friends.

Colorado Community Media arts and entertainment columnist Sonya Ellingboe counted Munds as a friend since the Littleton Independent and Englewood Herald became part of the same company in the 1990s, said Ellingboe, who traded personal stories with Munds.

“His stories ranged from early military days and his marriage and kids to what was happening now on our beats,” Ellingboe said. “He was a wealth of knowledge on local history and politics and seemed to know everyone related and so enjoyed tracking after the latest bits of information about the community he really loved.”

Behind the scenes, Munds simply was “a good man with a good heart,” said Jerry Healey, Colorado Community Media’s publisher, who knew Munds for about 30 years.

“His late wife, Alva, baked our daughter’s first birthday cake,” he said. “He was always bringing in homemade chocolates that he and Alva had made. And he always had a hug and a smile ready.”

Always looking for the next adventure, Munds talked about getting on the phone to do some reporting even as he lay recently in hospice, said Ann Healey, who has served as an editor and columnist for CCM. “Despite the battle against the illnesses of the past few years,” she said, “his energy, joy and excitement for life — and people — never waned. We should all live like Tom.” Munds shared stories even in his final weeks: The time he took more than 1,000 photos on safari in Africa, marveling at the wildlife. Chronicling the demolition of Cinderella City, the massive indoor mall that closed an economic chapter in Englewood history with its fall in the late 1990s.

Meeting influential Englewood faces.

Even the small things, such as sitting down for breakfast with Penn.

“I’d like to go to the Englewood Tavern and see people that I knew,” Munds said in January.

Showing love News of Munds’ passing drew dozens of comments and at least 100 shares on Facebook of a CCM profile on Munds published in his final days — and community members shared their stories.

“He did an article on us back in the early ’90s with our boyscout troop,” one comment read.

“This man interviewed me numerous times in high school; he was a class act,” a post read.

“He was a part of Englewood, no event felt right unless he was there.

He definitely left his mark,” said another post, echoing the sentiments of others.

Munds loved reminiscing about his favorite Englewood restaurants, the big high school sports games and the tougher stories — but perhaps above all, the familiar faces.

He recently expressed his gratitude for being a member of the community.

“Tell the people of Englewood,” Munds said, “that I love them.”

House Bill 20-1114 was voted down in the State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee. That body is sometimes called the “kill committee,” where the majority party often sends bills it intends to dispense with early to ensure they don’t meet a full vote of all members on the House floor.

On gay marriage, adoption Under another bill, county clerks could issue marriage licenses and certificates only if the marriage would be between one woman and one man.

That rule would be enforced “regardless of judicial decisions to the contrary,” the bill said, an apparent reference to the Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling that upheld a right to same-sex marriage.

The bill also sought to bar adoption by couples that do not consist of one man and one woman.

“Centuries of history, tradition, and morality support the fact that natural marriage is between one man and one woman,” the bill’s legislative declaration, or opening section, read.

House Bill 20-1272, or the “Colorado Natural Marriage and Adoption Act,” was also voted down in the State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee.

Small business assistance Currently, the state works with a nonprofit to help small businesses obtain government contracts at the local, state and federal levels — including small businesses owned by women, minorities and veterans.

A bill sponsored by state Rep. Tom Sullivan, a Centennial Democrat, would renew the contract for up to five years, according to the Legislature’s website. The current six-year contract between the state and the nonprofit will expire in September.

The state Legislature, under current law, does not contribute more than $200,000 to the program. The bill allows the Legislature to increase its contribution as long as the nonprofit contributes a 100% match by soliciting gifts, grants, and donations.

House Bill 20-1116 has bipartisan sponsorship and moved forward Feb. 11 to the Appropriations Committee.

I

t still is a ways off and has to be approved by the CHSAA Legislative Council during its April meeting, but the hockey committee has recommended the sport be split into two classifications for the 2021-22 season.

The proposal has 20 teams playing in Class 5A and 17 in 4A to try to create better parity in the sport.

There will be three leagues in each class OVERTIME and each loop would play each other twice. The league champion would gain an automatic berth in the state tournament.

There would be 10 teams in the 4A state tourney Jim Benton with the top two teams getting byes. There would be a 12-team state tournament bracket in 5A with first-round byes for the top four seeded teams.

The proposed 5A league alignments would have Cherry Creek, Regis Jesuit and Heritage in the Metro League. Mountain Vista, Chaparral, Castle View and Valor Christian would be in the South League. Standley Lake would be in the North League.

aeton Hackley has a different role this season for the Douglas County boys basketball team.

Hackley played a little as a freshman last season, but this year the 5-foot-11 sophomore guard has been selected by the team as a captain and he’s also the Huskies’ scoring leader.

“Last year motivated me because we had nine seniors, so being one of the three other people on varsity I knew I was going to have to step up and play on a higher level,” said Hackley. “I got in the gym over the summer, got some shots up and started lifting a lot more so I was just getting myself ready.

“This year for sure has definitely been different. I feel like I have stepped up as a leader, as a person and as a basketball player too. It was a challenge because you see somebody as a sophomore as a captain and they don’t want to listen. I feel the guys really respect me because of how hard I work and what I’ve done for this team.”

COACH’S TAKE: ‘Jaeton is extremely mature for his age and plays with a high basketball IQ. He’s a very tough player on both ends of the floor. He’s got a long way to go but he’s a heck of a leader for us.’

Q&A with Hackley What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?

My brother Jacob who passed away two years ago. I write his name on my shoes. I think about him every day. Life is short, so take advantage of what you have you have in front in you. I don’t know what it was called.

He was born late so he came out late and didn’t make it.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

I usually defend the best player so if

I keep their best player from scoring, our whole team can score.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

Math. I’m not really good at math but it is a challenge for me and that’s why I like it.

What do you like to do away from basketball and school?

My fun is basketball and I don’t do much of anything else. I guess I really just spend time with my

family.

What are your pre-game habits?

I usually kind of pray before a game, especially for my brother, and pray that the game goes well and nobody gets injured.

What is the key to being a good defensive player?

Most people say it is how quick you are and all this, but defense is all heart. You have to want to play defense.

Moment of silence It only seemed appropriate that a moment of silence was held for my good friend Tom Munds prior to Englewood’s boys basketball game on Feb. 13 against Fort Lupton.

Munds passed away Feb. 6 and I, like the Englewood community he served and wrote about, will miss him.

Long before I started working for Colorado Community Media and would cover events with Munds, I would visit my former dentist’s office in Englewood. I would pick up an Englewood Herald and read stories written by Munds.

He was an icon in Englewood and the south metro area and will be hard to replace. He would always tell me stories about this Englewood meeting or this Pirates coach.

State champions The first girls state championship wrestling tournament for the CHSAA pilot program was held Feb. 8, and Douglas County had two champions.

Area swimmers stand out at state Heritage, Regis Jesuit athletes won individual championships

Anna Shaw of Heritage and Sophia Bradac of Regis Jesuit won individual events, while Cherry Creek finished second in the team standings to highlight the performances of south metro athletes at the Class 5A state high school swimming and diving championships.

The competition was held Feb. 13 and 14 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton.

Shaw, who won a state 4A title in the 50 yard freestyle as a freshman in 2018 and was third last season in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles when Heritage moved up a classification, returned to the top of the podium as she won the 5A title in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.99. The junior was second in the 100-yard freestyle and swam legs on two relay teams for the Eagles, who were sixth in the final team standings.

“Looking back on this high school season, I’m really excited how I did,” Shaw said. “It feels good to be a state champion again. I ended on a high note.”

Heritage coach Tom Byorick said Shaw “can do it all.”

“She has found out a lot about herself in her versatility over the past year,” Byorick said. “I don’t know that she expected it. It is not a surprise for anybody that works with her. But if Anna makes up her mind to do something, she is pretty good at getting it done.”

Bradac, a senior who was the 2019 runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke, was first in the event this year with a time of 1:02.22 and helped the Raiders wind up third in the team standings.

She also swam on two Eagles relay teams and was second in the 100-yard freestyle.

Lyndsey Wehr, of Arapahoe, was third in the 50 freestyle, and Jada Surrell-Norwood of Regis Jesuit was third in the 100 freestyle.

Cherry Creek, paced by individual finishes from Jenna Smith and Elizabeth Brock, was in contention to win the state title until the final few races.

Creek coach Eric Craven kept track of the team scoring, which included B finals, and it was before the 100 backstroke, in which Fairview had three scoring swimmers against one for Creek, that the Bruins realized the Knights would win the championship.

Fairview wound up with 50 points,

compared to five for the Bruins, in the backstroke and went on to win its second state title in a row. Fairview ended with 382.5 points while Creek had 348.

Creek held a slim four-point lead after nine events before the 100 yard backstroke when the Knights grabbed the team lead.

“The backstroke got us,” Craven said. “But we are extremely happy with second. Last year we were fourth, the year before that we were eighth and the year before that we were seventh. I’m very, very happy. We are a fairly young team, so we are coming up in the right direction.”

Littleton Symphony Orchestra performs original arrangements

The old world met the new at the Littleton Symphony Orchestra’s Valentine’s Day concert, as cellist Ethan Lazarus performed the firstever arrangement of Astor Piazzolla’s “Amor Tango Suite” for the electric cello and orchestra.

Lone Tree, specializes in orchetral arrangements of works by Piazzolla, an Argentine composer.

Lazarus chose the electric cello for its incredible range of sounds, he said. The instrument looks like a minimalist version of its acoustic counterpart, with a body barely wider than the strings.

Arranging the pieces took hundreds of hours, Lazarus said.

“It’s one of the most unique pieces the orchestra’s ever put on,” he said.

The Littleton Symphony Orchestra performs at Littleton United Methodist Church. Its next concert is “Beethoven and the Pines” on April 3.

Senior Tristan Kelly, who also won her third state title, was the 165-pound champion and she was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the state tournament. Kelly was 55-0 as a high school wrestler.

Sprout wins again Valor Christian senior Cole Sprout has been named the Gatorade Colorado boys cross country runner of the year.

It is the third straight year that Sprout, a three-time state cross country champion, has won the award.

Honor roll Each week, performances of South Metro athletes and teams will be highlighted. This week’s performances were selected from games, matches, meets held between Feb. 8 and Feb. 13.

Jakob Boos had two goals and two assists for four points to help the Heritage hockey team topple Chatfield, 6-1, on Feb. 8.

Julian Hammond III led four Cherry Creek double-figure scorers with 27 points in a 73-57 boys basketball victory over Arapahoe on Feb. 12.

Valor Christian’s hockey team scored on three of its first five shots on goal in a 3-2 victory over defending state champion Regis Jesuit on Feb. 8.

Junior Sam Hoops scored 17 points and the Lutheran boys basketball team made 59% of its field goal attempts in a 70-43 win over Jefferson Academy on Feb. 13.

Reece Kelly scored 26 points and Ben Bowen added 20 as Mountain Vista’s boys basketball team edged Legend, 72-70 in overtime, on Feb. 11.
