As the Jefferson County Board of Education looks to the future, they are questioning if Jeffco Schools Superintendent Dan McMinimee should be part of it.

“I believe that Dan McMinimee has been a very good superintendent for Jeffco Schools and has worked hard,” board president Ron Mitchell said. “But if we look at the future, is he the best person to lead Jeffco forward?”

The Board of Education McMinimee met in executive session on Dec. 8 and Dec. 15 to discuss personnel matters. According to the district, the non-renewal of McMinimee’s threeyear contract was one of the decisions reached during those meetings.

“It was clear during our executive sessions that the board felt we should explore our options to support the vision and direction of our school district,” Mitchell said. “This is a very difficult discussion, especially since Dan has led Jeffco Public Schools through

One thing is certain, most observers agree: No one knows what the federal government will look like after Inauguration Day in January.

But Rep. Brittany Pettersen, D-Lakewood, is ready in her new leadership roles to keep Colorado moving forward.

“I have concerns about what could happen on the federal level with this new administration, but I’m going to continue to look for Colorado solutions,” she said. “I’m going to fight back against any cuts to funding we badly need here.”

Pettersen was named Majority Whip for the 2017 legislative session, which means she will ensure party members vote, and the legislative process is an efficient one. She will continue to serve as chair of the House Education Committee. And she will also serve on the Public Health Care and Human Services Committee.

She joins another area legislator, Sen. Andy Kerr, D-Lakewood, in taking a large leadership role through their involvement in many committees.

concern for Pettersen and Kerr, as both legislators have experience serving on their respective chambers’ education committees. Kerr is a teacher and was on the Senate education committee last year.

“I will always be involved in education legislation,” he wrote. “As a veteran lawmaker, I need to help my caucus and constituents have a voice in a variety of situations.”

With the Trump presidency starting, Pettersen said she’s particularly wary of cuts to important funding sources like the federal Title 1, which provides resources to schools with the most needs.

“I will be an advocate for getting this funding, regardless of any disarray in the federal government,” she said.

“Colorado public schools allowed me to

“I’m looking forward to making sure the floor is running efficiently,” she said. “I’m excited to take the lead and make sure our priorities are getting through the house.”

Colorado has seen an increase in people addicted to opioids, and Pettersen said she has seen the damage this can cause firsthand in her own family.

“We need to look at ways to stop doctors from over-prescribing these medications,” she said. “I’m concerned about Medicaid funding and the cost of health care.”

Until the new administration’s priorities and methods become clearer, Pettersen is urging legislators and voters to be ready.

“We’re going to be aware and ready to react to what is happening on a federal level,” she said. “Everyone is unsure what things are going to look like.”

The board’s next regular meeting is Jan. 12, at which time the board is expected to vote on whether to start a search process for a new superintendent.

“I am deeply saddened by this decision,” McMinimee told Colorado Community Media. “I believe many in our community are optimistic about the direction that Jeffco Public Schools is headed. We know we still have much work to do, but as presented to the Board of Education earlier this year, we are seeing some positive results due

to the focus and commitment of staff and students.”

McMinimee became superintendent of Jeffco Schools in July 2014, replacing longtime Superintendent Cindy Stevenson. He was selected on a 3-2 vote, with the support of Ken Witt, Julie Williams and John Newkirk. Those three board members, all elected in 2013 on a conservative reform platform, were later the target of a successful recall campaign in 2015, during which McMinimee’s hiring became an issue.

Over the past 2 1/2 years, the district has faced a teacher sick-out protest over low pay, student protests over proposed changes to the Advanced Placement U.S. History curriculum, contentiousness over teacher evaluation and pay systems, and the recall election.

Rather, you price the home right, get those multiple offers and then your agent starts talking to the various agents who have submitted offers, not just to bid up the offers by disclosing what the current highest price is, but also to get terms such as a flexible closing date. Your highest bidder might be someone who can’t be flexible enough, but the existence of unworkable offers nevertheless can help you get a higher price from buyers who can provide that flexibility.

We have used this process with consistent success to negotiate post-closing occupancy agreements, rent-backs, sale of furniture to the buyer outside of closing, and so much more. I can cite a half dozen transactions in 2016 where we got a seller’s home under contract and, despite the seller’s market, got the seller under contract for his re-

placement home with a simultaneous closing on both properties. Trust me, it can be done!

An alternative strategy is just as effective if the seller can get approved for purchasing without a contingency on the sale of their current property. In those cases, we get under contract for the replacement home first — typically with a 45- to 60-day closing — and then immediately put the client’s home on the market. By pricing that home correctly, we get it under contract right away with multiple offers and negotiate the closing date to match the closing date on the replacement home. Then, our buyer is able to use the proceeds from his current home in purchasing the replacement home, canceling any bridge loan or mortgage that may have been part of the original purchase contract.

A last-minute Christmas tree lot stop Small-town farm gives tree shopping a unique flair

With just three days left until Christmas, one of the few places to still find a quality Christmas tree wasn’t in front of a grocery store or in a parking lot.

Instead, it was just off West Alameda Avenue at Everitt Farms, where for the fourth year Derek and Kamise Mullen are selling sustainably-grown Fraser and Nordmann fir trees.

“The main thing that makes us unique is we’re not just a Christmas tree lot,” Derek said.

“We are a full scale urban farm.

are cut about a week before they are shipped to Everitt, which keeps them nice and green.

“We are family-owned and -operated, friendly and we’re always happy to talk about farming, food, our history as well as the future of Everitt Farms and all things local and sustainable,” Derek said. “We always trim bottom branches, give the trees a fresh cut. We are happy to tie them on to the customer’s car and the customers can have as many boughs as they want for free.”

One of the Mullens’ favorite things about Christmas trees is the careful and sustainable way they’re grown and managed. For every tree cut down at least one is planted to help capture carbon and increase soil water retention.

The small-town vibe at Everitt Farms is one of its biggest draws for customers like Anne, who stopped by looking for a tree.

“I just moved to the area here,” she said. “You could go to King Soopers, but I’d rather support a place like this.”

From growth to a new police chief, Lakewood saw plenty in 2016

Lakewood was as busy as ever in 2016, with residents and community leaders focusing on what the city’s future will look like.

This came in the form of passionate discussion about development in Rooney Valley, growth in the Belmar area, and new housing options for seniors to young families. Businesses like FIrstBank continued to invest in the community, and a November election provided voters with different options on the city’s future.

As the year comes to an end, we looked back at our coverage to find 10 stories that stood out. They follow below, listed in chronological order:

1.

Fed Center almost hosts immigrant children A plan to temporarily house immigrant children from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador at the Federal Center in Lakewood this spring was canceled Feb. 12 because the facility could not be renovated in time.

“Because of the short time frame for opening the center, the lack of information regarding the community impacts and concern regarding the conditions for these kids, I was concerned about it from the moment it was announced,” said Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul in a statement at the time.

The plan to house about 1,000 children at the center in April was announced in late December 2015, which took many elected officials and community leaders by surprise. The facility was to be run by the Department of Health and Human Services.

“After personally visiting the site, it quickly became evident that setting up a facility of this magnitude was going to be a monumental undertaking,” Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-7th District) said then.

Many of the children traveled on foot through three countries on their way to the U.S. to escape human trafficking, violence and abuse.

LHS student dies in car accident Lakewood High School senior and basketball player Mackenzie Forrest was killed in a car accident, just a month away from her 18th birthday.

Forrest lost control of a 1997 Toyota

4Runner at about 3:30 a.m. March 13 while traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 near Frisco. The Colorado State Patrol report indicated Forrest had not been wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car.

More than 1,000 family, friends, students and peers attended the March 17 funeral to pay their respects to “Lil’ Mac.” Forrest was the leading scorer for the school’s basketball team and had planned to continue playing at Regis.

In their daughter’s honor, Forrest’s parents started the Lil’ Mac Pledge — “Always buckle up, and remember that kindness matters” — to encourage students to wear seatbelts. They also launched a Hustle + Heart Remember Bands program, developed to remind people to be kind and give their best, in memory of Forrest. Proceeds from these bands benefit the Gold Crown Enrichment program.

The family also started the Mac Forrest Legacy Fund and Hustle + Heart Award, to help players and students afford sports and college.

Lakewood’s downtown continues to grow The area around Belmar and Lakewood City Commons, otherwise known as Lakewood’s downtown, welcomed two important additions this year.

After 12 years of waiting, Belmar’s first and only hotel, Hyatt House Belmar, finally opened its doors.

The extended-stay hotel offers 135 rooms in four options — den-inspired guest rooms, studios with kitchenettes, one-bedroom kitchen suites and double queen one-bedroom kitchen suites. Other features include the H Bar on the ground floor, a yearround saline pool and more than 2,000

square-feet of business space.

The hotel employs about 30 people.

The other major addition was the Village at Belmar senior living facility, built on the vacant nine-acre site across from Belmar and Lakewood City Commons, which is nearing completion.

Village at Belmar is a premium senior living, 156 residential-unit project with 60 independent living and 96 memory care and assisted living units.

The developer of the Village at Belmar is Ascent Living Communities, based in Colorado. Ascent is implementing a new care philosophy at Village at Belmar called Meaningful Connections, which promotes the wellness of all residents through “deep connections” between associates and residents, and residents and each other.

The facility wants to be a place at which students and local organizations can volunteer, and is slated to be finished in February.

Metro West Housing Solutions unveils new project Metro West Housing Solutions continues its efforts to improve affordable housing options in Lakewood with its latest project, Fifty Eight Hundred.

The project will be located at the former Martischang property at 5800 W. Alameda Ave. and will build 54 family apartments at the already existing tower and 98 more in a separate four-story building. The $34 million project will feature seven studios, 46 one-bedroom rooms, 78 two-bedroom rooms, and 21 three-bedroom rooms.

Lakewood High School senior MacKenzie Forrest, known on the school basketball team as “Li’l Mac,” died March 13 after sustaining injuries in a car crash on Interstate 70 near Frisco.

On May 19, Metro West Housing Solutions announced the receipt of the Low Income Housing Tax Credits award for $800,000. And on May 20, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded Metro West Housing Solutions $200,000 in Brownfields grant funds to address environmental concerns, including potential soil vapors, asbestos, lead and mold at the 3.68-acre site.

The goal is to begin construction on the project in mid-2017, with a completion date of early to mid-2018. Metro West has been working with neighbors, the New American School and Red Rocks Church, both of which will remain where they are.

n open letter to my younger self: Dear … me— Hi. It’s me. Er, it’s you. Er, it’s … um, it’s us at different places in our lives.

Never mind how, just listen, I don’t have much time. There are a couple things I’d like you to try to learn. It’ll make your life simpler, and, hopefully, make my life a little easier.

First of all, try to stop assuming things of other people. A wise person once said that we tend to judge ourselves by our intentions, while we tend to judge others by their actions.

And yet, for some reason, we spend an awful lot of time making assumptions about other people’s intentions. I have discovered that, most of the time, people act in what they per-

ceive to be their own best interests, or, at least, the best interests of their families. You may not like what that means for you, but it doesn’t make others mean, or inconsiderate, or evil.

You will get a lot further if you try to figure out what they think is in their best interests — it will save you a lot of energy, it will probably be better for developing relationships, and, sometimes, just maybe, you may discover that you can help somebody get what they need in a way that helps you get what you need. You know what that’s called? Teamwork. Great way to accomplish important things.

Yes, it would be wonderful if you could operate on the assumption that people are good, and nice, and caring. It would also be wonder-

ful if unicorns were real, and the Platte River were made of marshmallow cream. But all of human history should teach you that people aren’t that way. People are complex, complicated, beautiful organisms — treat them as such.

And, also, don’t assume you know what other people think. Ask them. When you want something — a date, help publishing (yeah, that will be a thing for you someday), a job, a writing gig — ask. Don’t assume they’re not interested or would rather go another direction.

Give people the opportunity to say “no”. The worst thing that can happen is that they will say “no,” and, honestly, hasn’t that happened SEE ALCORN, P9

ne of the greatest pleasures of reading to children is reassuring them that we love them by speaking the words of love out loud.

According to Dr. Gary LIFELONG Chapman, counselor and author of the series of LEARNING books ”The Five Love Esther Macalady Languages” for all members of the family, we can never say the words enough. He writes about all the ways we can say the words so others will understand and be reassured they are loved.

Each child is a distinct individual with a distinct personality and individual “love languages.” One or more might be more powerful than the others. The key, according to Chapman, is finding out the love language that works best for each of our loved ones and then communicating our love in their language.

Love languages Dr. Gary Chapman’s five love languages are affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service and physical touch.

If a child thrives on words of affirmation here are a few ideas from Dr. Chapman. Post encouraging words, praise, or other kind words on your children’s door, in their mittens, or lunch. Compliment your children in front of others.

Catch your children doing well or something good and thank them. “Thank you for doing your chores today without be reminded.”

Look for strengths and notice their strengths. Cut up an uplifting note into pieces so your older children can put the words together. Text words of affirmation to your teens, twenties, and older children often. Let SEE MACALADY, P19

Over the past year I have enjoyed working GUEST with City COLUMN Council and our dedicated City staff and, most of all, I have been honored to work for you!

The hallmark of local Adam Paul government is that the work we do touches the lives of residents daily.

While some of the issues can be complex, three tenets of local governance are straightforward: police, parks and potholes. City Council adopted the 2017 budget on Oct. 24, and this council’s first budget passed unanimously. The budget’s public process began in early September, culminating with two public hearings in October. I am pleased to report that the City is in good financial health, and we take seriously the allocation of your tax dollars.

To ensure that Lakewood continues to be a safe and vibrant community, money was allocated for eight new police agents, two of whom will work to protect our older population against criminals who seek to exploit them. It is also important to make sure that we provide the tools needed for our agents to perform at a high level, and this budget will replace police agent’s flip phones — yes, I said flip phones. Hard to imagine these still exist, but agents will now receive smartphones and new mobile computers in the patrol cars.

A quality living environment is another value.

After a robust community process including neighbors, staff and students from CU Denver, Lasley Park will be undertaking a major overhaul including new play places, walking paths, gardens and irrigation. We will also be expanding Sunset Park through acquiring more land, and we’ll be replacing the amphitheater cover for the iconic stage at the Lakewood Heritage Center where so many residents enjoy summer concerts.

Quality transportation options are another value that adds to the livability and mobility in Lakewood.

Money has been allocated to continue our important asphalt replacement program and fund a traffic study to address the ever-increasing traffic on and around the Union Boulevard corridor.

The second thing I’d like you to try to learn is related, but not quite the same. It’s actually a little more from the realm of Eastern philosophy, but it does come in handy. It is this: learn not to have expectations of other people until they have established, in your life, what sort of expectations you should have. To paraphrase Buddha (or maybe it’s Yoda): expectations lead to disappointment, disappointment leads to anger, and anger leads to suffering.

For instance, just because you seem to have enough energy for work and play and creating and hobbies, it’s not fair to expect the same thing of other people. Doesn’t make them bad — their priorities are different. It’s not fair to expect

people to be understanding, or forgiving, or in a good mood, or excited about the same things as you are. Be you. Be whoever you are, and then you can be pleasantly surprised when you find people who share your outlook.

This is not, by the way, to say that you should lower your expectations of your students — high expectations are the cornerstone of good teaching. But it’s not fair to expect them to be able to do things you haven’t taught, to have habits you haven’t created, or to love music as much as you do. It’s your job to build those, and then you can start to have expectations for their performance.

I hope this helps. Oh, and, seriously, pick up some cleaning supplies and use them every once in a while. Ciao!

Tree cleanup As people begin taking down their holiday decorations, one of the biggest questions is often what to do with the tree, especially if someone wants to keep the tree out of a landfill.

Lakewood is just one community that offers tree recycling to its residents as a way to environmentally dispose of Christmas trees.

“We’ve had employees in four different locations before this,” said Jim Reuter, chief operating officer of FirstBank. “We’re going to have everyone here when this project is done, because we believe teamwork works better when we’re under one roof.”

The site has been owned and used

by FirstBank since 1995. At the time, the structure was 60,000 square feet, and another 40,000 were added in 2003.

But as the company continued to grow, a central corporate hub became the goal.

The finished new structure adds another 100,000 square feet to the original, also being renovated as the second phase of the project, which was recently finished. The finished corporate headquarters will be the new home of 1,400 employees.

The state-of-the-art facility embraces both the latest technological advances and incorporates health and wellness.

Desks that employees work at can be either standing or sitting. There is a brand-new fitness center, game room with table tennis, pool and arcade games, and a full-service cafe and rooftop patio.

Lakewood hires new police chief Lakewood’s police chief Kevin Paletta announced his retirement at the end of May after 35 years with the department, including 8 1/2 years as chief.

About five months later, Dan McCasky, a 30-year veteran of the Lakewood Police department, was named as the new chief.

During Paletta’s time as chief, the department maintained its Commission on AcPaletta creditation for Law Enforcement Agencies accreditation, and was the second agency in the state to receive U.S. Department of Justice’s procedural justice training.

McCasky had been serving as interim chief since Paletta’s retirement and was sworn in on Nov. 16.

A Denver area resident for more than 40 years, McCasky, 54, had most recently served as the division chief of the Patrol Division.

He began his career in Lakewood in 1986, and has held line level, supervisory and leadership positions in all of the department’s three divisions.

McCasky serves on a variety of committees and boards, including the boards of the Ralston House and the Foothills Animal Shelter.

He previously served as a board member for the Colorado Association of Sex Crimes Investigators as well as the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault. In 2007, he received the Police Service Medal for his work with the Colorado Association of Sex Crimes Investigators.

Alameda area articulation eyes shifts Students in the Alameda International High School articulation area saw the first signs of boundary shifts coming to the area this year.

Stein Elementary was closed in 2014 because of overcrowding. In the spring of 2014, the school district approved a $1.1 million plan to combine Alameda’s International Baccalaureate program with O’Connell’s IB Middle Years program, creating a 7-12 school at Alameda, moving Stein students to O’Connell and emptying Stein.

The remodel on Stein is nearing completion, and the newly named Rose Stein is set to open in the fall of 2017. Neighbors have already had the opportunity to get early looks at the school as construction continues.

Jeffco Public Schools held meetings in the fall to examine articulation changes in the area as a result of the reopening of Rose Stein. Only the articulation area for Belmar and Kendrick Lake Elementary schools are changing, while boundaries at Lasley, Deane and Emory will be redrawn.

The district is also considering making Creighton a sixth-through-eighth middle school.

Lakewood’s seats in state House of Representatives stay in Democrat control Both of Lakewood’s House representative seats remained Democrat after the November election, with Chris Kennedy defeating Republican Chris Hadsall for the House District 23 seat with 23,872 votes to Hadsall’s 18,850. Current seat holder Max Tyler was term-limited.

Incumbent Brittany Pettersen held off Republican Nancy Pallozzi in the race for House District 28 with 22,431 votes Pettersen to Pallozzi’s 14,522.

The Democrats outraised and outspent their opponents during the campaign and won with 55 percent of votes. Both parties’ candidates received their largest contributions from Political Action Committees (PACs) and small donor committees (SDCs) like the Colorado Democratic

Party, Jefferson County Education Association and AT&T Colorado Employee PAC. Pettersen was named Majority Whip for the 2017 legislative session, as well as continuing to serve as chair of the House Education Committee. She will also serve on the Public Health Care and Human Services Committee. Kennedy will serve on the Finance and Health, Insurance and Environment committees.

Green Mountain fires remain under investigation A large and very visible fire broke out on Green Mountain on the evening of Nov. 28, burning 96 acres and causing large amounts of precautionary evacuations.

But according to West Metro Fire Rescue, the fire was the fifth in a series of fires that have been intentionally set in the park in November.

In the case of all five fires, West Metro has eliminated natural occurrences.

A multiagency fire and law enforcement team is investigating the five incidents — the first three of which happened in the first week of November, a fourth that was not reported at the time, and the Nov. 28 fire.

All five fires were started around the dusk hour and several were within walking distance of trails. All but the Nov. 28 fire were an acre or smaller. No structures have been burned and no one has been injured.

Investigators request anyone who sees anything suspicious or out of the ordinary, whether in their neighborhood, or on the trails in Green Mountain Park, to call 303-987-7111 immediately. Callers can remain anonymous.

Rooney Valley The future of the Rooney Valley, a 990acre mostly undeveloped area along C-470 on the west side of Green Mountain, south of the West Alameda and north of the Morrison Road exits, has been the biggest topic at the end of 2016.

The area forms the last large portion of undeveloped land in Lakewood and falls primarily within the jurisdictions of the City of Lakewood and Town of Morrison. The municipalities have managed the areas jointly since the 1990s, but the last update

of the master plan was in 2002, and a lack of development in the area has spurred Morrison and Lakewood to reexamine it. The original master plan provided for a maximum build-out that theoretically would have allowed for 28 million square feet of building space between the two communities.

The purpose of the new plan is to articulate the vision of the two municipalities by providing a solid foundation for policy direction, land use decisions and public investment.

The City of Lakewood and Town of Morrison have made revisions to the Rooney Valley Intergovernmental Agreement to simplify the development process in the valley.

The updated master plan was originally supposed to go before council in early December, but residents and some members of council voiced concern about lack of time to consider the repercussions, and fears of over development.

Council will discuss it again at the Jan. 23 meeting.

Lakewood pins down dual win

LAKEWOOD — If you were late to the wrestling dual between Jefferson and Lakewood on Dec. 21 you were likely out of luck.

The dual between the two Jeffco programs lasted about 30 minutes from start to finish. Six forfeited matches, seven pins and one technical fall made for a quick dual at Lakewood High School. No bout went the full six minutes.

Lakewood came out victorious with a 41-36 victory. The Tigers jumped out to a 36-0 lead with pins by David Schadler (170 pounds), Brayton Stieger (182) and Michael Inouye (220) to go along with three forfeit victories.

Stieger had the quickest pin of the night. He pinned Jefferson freshman Kyler Tolka in nine seconds.

“I went in there serious and ready to go. I put a fireman carry on him and won,” Stieger said of his fastest pin of his career. “That’s all there is to it.”

Once the dual got to the lighter weights, Jefferson showed why it currently sits at No. 5 in Class 3A by Tim Yount’s On the Mat rankings.

Saints’ Cruz Ortega (106), Randy Duran (126), Nick Gallegos (138) and Brandon Onofre (152) all won by pins and Jefferson picked up two wins by forfeit.

“Just for our kids to compete and get better in every position,” Jefferson coach Oscar Fonseca said of his objective in the dual before winter break. “That is all we are looking at right now.”

The Saints’ returning state champion senior Kyle Cisneros didn’t wrestle with Lakewood, forfeiting

at 132 pounds. Cisneros won the 3A 126-pound title last winter and On the Mat currently has him ranked No. 1 at 132 pounds in 3A. “We don’t pay attention to that stuff,” Fonseca said of his five wrestlers currently ranked in the top eight of their weight class in 3A. “Rankings are settled at the last day of state (tournament).”

Fonseca added he believes that with hard work “any kid” has a shot to place at the state tournament come the middle of February at Pepsi Center in Denver.

Lakewood has its own returning state champion. Junior Gabe Dinette captured the 5A title at 145 pounds last season. Dinette and a handful of other Tigers were held out for Wednesday’s dual because of injury.

Bear Creek rally comes up just short on the court LAKEWOOD — Douglas County’s youth helped its boys basketball team grab a 87-80 road victory over Bear Creek on Dec. 19.

Douglas County sophomores TJ Boykins (19 points) and Davon Walker (18 points) led the way for the Huskies (4-3 record) in the non-conference victory over Bear Creek (3-3). However, it was Douglas County freshman Brendan Temple who sealed the victory scoring nine of his 14 points in the final four minutes to hold off a fourth-quarter rally by the Bears.

nother year is about to begin, and each new year brings a chance for change.

Here are my wishes for the OVERTIME new year, when it comes to area high school sports: For the Pomona football team, just one more win to cap off a championship season.

Jim Benton An olive branch for the Highlands Ranch and ThunderRidge football programs so they can get together, talk and maybe end their differences.

Contending football teams for Douglas County and Castle View, so that Castle Rock football gets back on the map.

No additional classifications added by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

There are already too many.

For Westminster football, another season like 2015, which created so much spirit and excitement.

In baseball, that CHSAA finds a way to add a pitch-count scoreboard for the playoffs so discrepancies can be discussed before the final innings.

In soccer, that state playoff games can be determined without shootouts.

A couple seventh-inning hits so that Heritage’s baseball team can get out of the district tournament and advance to the doubleelimination state tourney.

From a spectator’s viewpoint, a mercy rule for basketball.

That all coaches, especially wrestling coaches, can file results of dual meets, along with the major tournament results.

And rosters would really be helpful. High school hockey, for one, has a great website for results.

Fun for cross country runners and 1,600-meter athletes in track — because it sure doesn’t look enjoyable for many runners at the end of races.

That somehow the state-qualifying golf tournaments will be 36-hole events instead of one-day 18-hole affairs.

In all sports, that rivalries continue in a competitive, but friendly fashion.

And most of all, a happy and healthy 2017 for everyone.

Bear Creek’s 6-foot-4 senior Slade Marceau scored a gamehigh 23 points. Juniors Manuel Perez (13 points), Landon Cornell (10 points), Nick Duran (five points), along with senior Walker Rumsey (16 points) got hot for the Bears in the second half to make a game of it.

Douglas County was able to hold on in the fourth quarter to

end a two-game losing streak.

Guided by first-year coach Will Gosch, Bear Creek open their 5A Jeffco League schedule on the road against Arvada West on Jan. 5.

The Bears are looking to meet, or even surpass .500 winning percentage mark for the first time in nearly a decade. The last time Bear Creek didn’t have a losing record at the end of the season was the 2007-08 season. The Bears went 12-12 under then coach Steve Hyatt.

“A few of our kids are out nursing some small injuries,” Lakewood coach Daren Stennes said, who added Dinette will be good to go after the winter break. “We could have had some good match ups, but we didn’t.”

The 145-pound match was eventually decided when Lakewood’s Rylan Morgan won by technical fall, 15-0, in the third period to give the Tigers an 11-point lead with one match to go.

However, Jefferson finished the match strong with Onofre’s first round pin to close out the dual.

“You get anxious, but you work through it,” Onofre said waiting for his match, the last of the night.

Onofre is currently ranked No. 4 at 152 pounds. The Saints’ depth this season has Jefferson primed to make some noise at state in the team standings and cement the wrestling program as the flagship athletic program for the school.

“I think it’s fun to be competing at a high level,” Onofre said.

The Saints and Tigers get back to action with duals during the first week of January after the holidays.

“I’m just going to do a lot of running and weight lifting to keep my strength up. Going to eat right too,” Stieger said of his plans over the next two weeks. “Relax of course, it’s break.”

Getting help for Lakewood’s small businesses

There’s nothing like shop talk and gelato in the morning to get the first day of winter going.

Betsy Markey, Region VIII administrator for the U.S. Small Business Association, gathered Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul, representatives from the city’s Office of Economic Development, AARP and local business owners on Dec. 21 at Paciugo Gelato & Café in Belmar for a roundtable discussion on what small businesses need and what the business association can do to help.

“We have so many small businesses in Lakewood, and just like so many, I’m a small businessperson,” Paul said. “The city is here to be a partner and help small businesses in our community.”

Though the meeting was just an hour long, participants came away with a sense of the kind of support that exists — and encouragement to try new approaches.

“In my role, I’m here to do whatever I can to help businesses we work with,” said Monty Dietrich, business manager for the Plasterers and Mason’s Local No. 577. “We’ve been focusing on doing outreach to new cities and getting them a contract that fits what they need.”
