I grew up in the Lakewood area and went to Bear Creek High School. My husband went to North High School in Denver. This is just where I was raised. Both mine and my husband’s family were raised here.

When I had children, I wanted to be in Jefferson County. It has a good school district, so we decided to stay on this side of town. I have four daughters, three son in laws and three grandsons.

We like to go camping and do some hiking. We usually go camping on the

western slope. We’ve been to Eleven Mile State Park quite a bit. We started going there with some friends of ours when our daughters were little and kind of got into the camping thing. We also like to go over by Granby quite a bit too.

My husband is more of the hiker, but I’m starting to get into it. We go over by White Ranch and Golden Gate Park. We just like to be outdoors, but it’s something we like to do more during the summer. We’re Colorado natives, but I’ve only been skiing once, and my husband never has.

I also like to read, do some scrapbooking and spend time with my grandchildren whenever I have time.

I previously worked with Wells Fargo for 25 years, but I decided to leave. I worked at the bank’s payment processing lock box downtown, and then I ended up at Colorado Mills Mall.

LuEllen’s Gifts & Cards I’ve been working at the Colorado Mills for going on almost 12 years. I was partners with another store for about 11 and a half of those years, and then my husband and I opened our little shop on our own in March.

I’m kind of like the Hallmark store, but more. We’re trying to fill that niche of greeting cards, gift stores and a faith based spiritual store. I try to carry local products including local art and local authors.

We have a little bit of something for everybody.

We’re just a small business, and we’re trying to be something different and more original.

Holiday gift shop helps families in need at holidays STAFF REPORT

Parents and guardians facing hardship can get toys for their children for free at the Action Center’s holiday gift shop.

The gift shop will be open from Monday, Dec. 9 to Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Rock Community Church, 12472 W. Belleview Ave., Littleton.

Each year, the Action Center’s shop

welcomes several hundred families who want to provide their children with toys, books and stocking stuffers.

The 47-year-old tradition ensures that children in need have a good holiday.

The holiday gift shop is set up much like a big toy store and allows parents or guardians to choose the gifts that their children have high on their wish lists. Designed to help alleviate the financial pressure many families face during the holiday season, the

program reassures families facing hardship are able to provide gifts to their children.

“Through the holiday gift shop the Action Center helps families in our community by reducing the stress and financial burden of the holiday season,” Executive Director Pam Brier said in a news release. “We are here to ease that burden and bring needed joy to children in our community.”

The Action Center is still in need of several thousand gifts for the gift shop. Some of the most needed items include remote control cars and trucks, skateboards, scooters, science kits, arts and crafts kits, and nail and makeup kits. High-Tech, Low-Tech and No-Tech Ways to Make Your Home More Senior-Friendly [The following is adapted from the column I submitted for the December 2019 issue of “Prime Time for Seniors.]

Most seniors would like to age in place — that is, to stay in the home they know and love instead of relocating into assisted living.

At the same time, there are practical considerations, especially if a senior lives alone.

There are no-tech and low-tech ways to address the issues associated with aging in place. What’s new and perhaps less known to you are the high-tech and “smart home” solutions that are becoming more and more common. But let’s talk first about those better known no-tech and low-tech solutions.

The common no-tech solution is, of course, to have a caregiver who either lives in or visits you on a schedule. This, however, can be very expensive, unless you’re lucky enough to have a loving family member or two who can serve that function, perhaps trading free rent in your home for assistance with household chores, such as cooking and laundry.

The ideal home for aging in place, according to Jenn Gomer of CarePatrol, has a main-floor master bedroom, main-floor laundry room and a walk-in or roll-in shower — typically a ranch-style home with few or no stairs, although there are 2-story homes with main-floor masters and main-floor laundry. Ideally, the home should be close to at least one family member or friend on whom you can count in a pinch.

If a senior has a fall or is hospitalized, Jenn suggests meeting with an occupational therapist, who can look for trip hazards and suggest grab bars or railings where they could be beneficial. However, multiple falls should be seen as a warning sign that you may need to

change the home environment.

Jenn encourages her clients to be open to getting outside help with difficult activities. For instance, if you have a bad knee and your laundry is in the basement, consider allowing a friend or family member to help with laundry or getting an outside home care service to assist. Installing laundry hook-ups on the mainfloor is another option, if practical.

A classic low-tech tool is the medical alert button you wear on your person. The original product was introduced by Life Alert Emergency Response in the 1980s, but there are numerous other companies now offering such a product.

Another challenge can be grocery shopping, but a common low-tech option nowadays is to order groceries online or by phone and having them delivered, rather than going out on icy sidewalks and parking lots.

Patio homes, typically ranch-style homes with exterior maintenance done by an HOA, are few and far between, but if they’re out there, we can find them within 15 minutes of them going on the market. I just sold one this fall.

We’d love to live in a patio home with grounds maintenance handled by the HOA, but we have the equivalent of that at less expense by hiring someone to mow our lawn in the summer and do spring and fall yard clean-ups. It’s great!

Regarding making your current home more senior friendly, Rita and I love the stair elevator which we have on the stairs to our basement in our ranch-style home. We got a great deal on a used one, and they’re easy to install, assuming you have a straight staircase. The seat and armrests fold up when not in use, so they can work on any staircase that is at least 3 feet wide. Rita and I are still quite mobile and don’t need to use our stair elevator currently, but we like knowing it’s already in place for when the need arises. Meanwhile, it’s really handy for transporting cases of wine and other heavy items to and from the basement.

If you have stairs with landings and turns, custom-made stair elevators can be purchased, but they get pricey. I can recommend some vendors. For those straight staircases, I can help you find a used one and someone to install it.

A senior friend who lives alone buddied up with a neighbor and texts that neighbor every morning when she gets up. If she forgets, the neighbor texts her asking if she’s okay. Also, that neighbor and two others have keys to her house.

Now, let’s talk high-tech solutions.

The best part of such a video doorbell is that you don’t need to be home, you only need to have your smartphone with you. The visitor has no way of knowing that you’re not home.

Simply having a video doorbell is a good crime deterrent, because thieves recognize it. We bought our video doorbell from www.Ring.com. They also sell secondary cameras for added safety.

There are so many other Wi-Fi connected devices that you can install in your home which alert you on your smartphone. You can even buy Wi-Ficonnected “smart outlets” which make any non-internet connected lamp or appliance controllable (and easily monitored) on your smartphone. “Our teachers have built things into class that have helped us later,” he said.

Even so, the test poses a challenge for many. The score required for Colorado students to graduate from high school in 2021 – a score of 970 – exceeds the average scores seen by nine Jeffco schools this year.

The SAT is one of 12 ways to show proficiency in English and math, which the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) spent years selecting after the state General Assembly passed a 2008 law to change graduation requirements, said Robin Russel, graduation guidelines manager with the CDE. Other means of demonstration include college-level classes, extensive projects and different standardized tests, though districts can individually choose which of the 12 methods they will and will not accept.

requirement by the end of their senior year will not receive a diploma until the requirement is fulfilled, Russel said, and will need to take a qualifying class or test the following summer or semester.

Previously, graduation requirements were almost completely set by individual districts. The only statewide requirement was that students complete a yearlong civics or government course, she said.

‘Open to the idea of improving’ The switch won’t take effect until 2021, but with logistics to work around and options to prepare, Jeffco has already spent years planning for the change, chief academic officer Matt Flores said.

Pomona High School principal Andy Geise and D’Evelyn High School principal Josh Griffin said at their schools, they have continually heightened their focus on preparing students for, and offering, multiple free possibilities.

“I don’t want a student who’s done all the right things to not graduate because they got a 460 on their English SATs,” Griffin said. “I remain hopeful that schools and districts will figure out pathways to help students.”

tered the SAT to all juniors enrolled in a Colorado public school. Students can use this free option to fulfill the new requirement, if they score at least 470 in English and 500 in math, a 970 out of a maximum 1,600.

However, nine Jeffco high schools, including online and charter schools, saw juniors earn an average SAT score less than 970 this year. On average, juniors at Jefferson High School scored an 803 on their SATs, according to CDE data. Alameda International, Longview High School, Arvada High School, Jefferson County Open Secondary and Pomona High School also saw average scores below the new requirement.

Jeffco students have other options to show English and math proficiency, with some of them costlier than others. For instance, students can qualify for credit through a college-level exam, such as an AP (Advanced Placement) or IB (International Baccalaureate) exam, both of which typically cost $85 or more.

Cheaper options include the ACT or ACCUPLACER, and a free option via the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery), administered by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command.

In 2008, the Colorado General Assembly discussed and passed legislation to add a graduation requirement through which Colorado high schoolers could demonstrate college or workforce readiness.

The request for change was “economic-led,” said Robin Russel, CDE graduation guidelines manager — meaning that it came to legislators from individuals who felt Colorado graduates applying for jobs had vastly different skillsets than one another, due to districts’ differing graduation requirements.

“What they wanted was multiple options from the outside to measure readiness for a student’s next steps,” she said.

Legislators tasked the CDE with determining the specifics of the new demonstration requirement, Russel said The CDE came up with a menu of demonstration options, which include possibilities such as the SAT, concurrent enrollment classes and a capstone project, to be required of students graduating in 2021 and after.

The goal is that, at every Jeffco school, there are “no dead-ends,” Geise said.

“Our community’s responding well” to the coming change, he said. “As long as there are options, I think everyone’s open to the idea of improving.”

Preparing every day To prevent those dead-ends, Jeffco schools have bolstered SAT prep to improve student performance.

“The schools all have something in place, but the type of prep varies depending on the school,” said district curriculum director Jef Fugita.

Additionally, all students gain experience by taking the PSAT once in ninth grade and once in 10th, he said.

Statewide, students can access free SAT prep help through online education provider Khan Academy.

Meanwhile, at a number of Jeffco schools, SAT prep doesn’t look like an after-school class or dedicated study time; rather, students prepare for the test every day through in-class assignments.

“It’s all integrated into our curriculum. We use the actual test and test prep materials to inform the assessments we provide our students,” said Brandon Brekke, Evergreen High School principal.

While this is especially true of math and English classes, it extends to all classes at the school, he said. “Social studies and art classes support writing skills, the science department includes some questions,” he said. “I feel our school will be prepared for the change.”

Another alternative For those who do not meet requirements through testing, there’s the capstone option, which some Jeffco schools have spent years creating and implementing.

To receive capstone credit, students must complete a project to be graded by school staff, said Vernon Whittington, Arvada High’s capstone director.

How students prepare for those projects differs from school to school, with most schools offering a class to guide capstone work. At Arvada High, which introduced its version of the capstone this year, the class is a four-years-long endeavor – and every student is required to take it.

CHRISTY STEADMAN “We believe that was the most equitable way to roll something like this out,” said assistant principal Jasmine Silverman. By requiring all students to take the capstone, the school ensures that no student finds themselves without a method by which to graduate come senior year.

Through the project, students have free rein to explore what is important to them, from “what it means to be a history teacher to building a model laser,” Silverman said.

Junior Josiah Ornelas chose to center his project around coaching, inspired by his experience as an assistant coach to the basketball team, he said. While he plans to achieve a qualifying SAT score, he said the capstone class has provided important career exploration opportunities.

“We’ve built up our resumes, which showed us what experience we had,” he said, “and through my project, I’m getting used to coaching and helping

out the players.”

Not all schools require every student to take a capstone class, but administrators are finding other ways to make sure no one slips through the cracks.

D’Evelyn offers one-on-one support to ensure every student has a graduation plan. Pomona periodically offers the ASVAB to students. And many districts are working on creating a summer capstone course, which students could take directly after their senior year to meet the requirement, Russel said.

That variety of solutions, and the time spent putting them in place, shows the dedication of Jeffco staff to helping students graduate, Flores said.

“This is the first class to have these requirements, so we’ll have a good sense” of how efforts have helped by 2021, he said. “I feel confident the students will be able to meet the requirements.”

On a snowy Small Business Saturday, an art studio that specializes in pottery and canvas painting is open and ready for old hands and novices alike to stop in.

The Red Paint Brush, 2049 Wadsworth Boulevard, Suite K, has been open seven moths according to owner Karen Hart.

The shelves are lined with unpainted mugs, figurines and ornaments, while the latest piece of canvas art from a class about painting reindeer hangs near the front. Samson, the affable store dog, lays near the cash register and wags his tail at visitors. He’ll scamper to his feet if he hears Hart mention the word “dog treat” though.

“We’re a creative outlet,” Hart says.

“If it’s creative, we teach it.”

Being a small local business, she relies largely on customers to help spread the word about the store. She offers referral discounts to her regulars, and asks all customers to help share the store’s calendar of events.

Hart can list off a variety of potential holiday gifts or decorative items in her store. She held a Black Friday sale, offering Christmas tree ornaments for as little as $1.50. She said the llama, sloth and pickup truck with a tree hanging out The back are especially popular.

Group painting classes are another part of the business at The Red Paint Brush, where for $25 friends and family can come together create something personal and beautiful. “it’s very therapeutic, which is good these days with all the hustle and bustle,” Hart said.

But I want to challenge the notion that we all have the same amount of time each day. Think about it like this: I doubt Michelangelo had to mow his

yard. I bet Thomas Jefferson didn’t spend much time in traffic. And when Einstein showed up to the restaurant, they probably made a table available for him.

My point is this: though time is finite, it can still be bought and sold. Millions of Americans sell their time every day, usually in the form of an hourly job.

Quite literally, they are paid to sell their time and talents. Likewise, time can and should be bought, whenever available. I pay someone to clean my house, not because I don’t know how to clean, but because I get to spend time with my family instead of dusting and vacuuming.

This fact was understood by those listed above. Anytime spent away from their unique pursuits was wasted.

You don’t have to be wealthy to buy time. You don’t need to hire a staff of assistants to pick up your groceries, do the laundry, and tend to the garden.

But what little changes can you make to buy some time?

Avoid social media-

These platforms are valuable for staying connected to a point.

Be careful how often you engage.

Practical ways to help cut down on holiday waste For starters, save gift wrap and ribbon

Americans throw away 25 percent more trash than usual between Thanksgiving and New Year’s — about a million extra tons of garbage each week, according to the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit group devoted to helping people to be more environmentally responsible.

There are plenty of ways to celebrate the spirit of the holidays while giving a gift to the earth (and maybe your wallet) as well.

For starters, go with reusable gift wrap, and recycle wrapping paper and ribbon. “Gift wrap is top on the list of wasteful holiday traditions. An easy hack is to wrap gifts in unused maps, comics for kids or, for larger gifts, printed pillowcases. You probably have these things around your house already,’’ says Rachel Sylvester, lifestyle editor for Real Simple.

“Save every bit of gift wrap and ribbon that comes your way, and try using fresh greenery instead of storebought bows,’’ she adds.

with some left over to tie a bow, according to NEEF. Sylvester says it’s easy to save on gift tags by writing the names of recipients directly on the gift, or colorcoding gifts by recipient. Let your friends and family know you’re opting out of single-use wrapping paper and gift tags this year.

Host gifts can also be more ecofriendly. For holiday dinners and parties, Sylvester recommends reusable drawstring pouches when bringing wine and other presents, and carrying homemade baked goods in mason jars or decorative, reusable boxes.

“They make great host gifts, do away with waste, and save money all at the same time,’’ she says.

For greeting cards, “I would suggest going paperless for holiday cards, which generally get trashed after

the holidays anyway,’’ says Sylvester.

“Your friends and family might rather have a card they can keep on their hard drive for the long haul instead of on their fridge for a week.’’

There’s a huge array of companies offering elegant electronic cards, among them PaperlessPost.com, AmericanGreetings.com, GreenEnvelope.com or JacquieLawson.com.

For decorations, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends opting for a living tree that can be planted outdoors or eventually mulched, and using energy-saving LED holiday lights. LEDs use around 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs, and last longer, too, the EPA says.

Remember to reduce food waste and avoid single-use plastics. “When hosting parties and holiday meals, use real or compostable table settings

instead of plastics. And if you’re short on table settings, try a service like TableandTeaspoon.com, which delivers table settings in advance and then invites you to return the dirty dishes afterward,’’ Sylvester says.

Have recyclable to-go containers handy for guests to take leftovers home, and familiarize yourself with local compost centers ahead of time, so food waste doesn’t end up in the landfill.

For gifts, think outside the store: homemade crafts or foods, or experiences instead of stuff. Give coupons for things like cooking a dinner or babysitting, Sylvester suggests. For example, look to knitting, sewing, baking or creating art as gifts.

“Homemade is king,’’ Sylvester explains. “It’s fun to shop, but the gifts that will mean the most are those that come from the heart. Cookies in mason jars are going to be way more memorable than something you pick up on the internet.’’

Bea Johnson, author of Zero Waste Home, suggests homemade candles, soap or paper as other gift ideas.

Museum memberships, magazine subscriptions or gift certificates to restaurants or concert halls all make great gifts, she says.

And when you do buy concrete things, opt for durable, energy-efficient, recyclable, or things made of natural products, and consider gifts from thrift shops or things that encourage people to use less stuff, like reusable containers, suggests Johnson.

From the wood he collects to the product it becomes, everything that Dave Hawley makes has a story.

Aspen trees are transformed into little wooden bowls and birch and pine trees become miniature, 3D funky trees for display.

“It’s all part of my fun,” Hawley said.

Hawley of Boulder is one of 108 Colorado artists who have their art for sale at this year’s Holiday Art Market (HART) at the Foothills Art Center, 809 15th St. Open for holiday shopping, HART will run through Dec. 29 this year.

In its 45th annual year, this year’s HART offers 3,365 different products — from scarves to soaps to paintings to jewelry and much more — and 8,225 individual items.

“You’ll always find something unique,” said Anna Schoen, Foothills Art Center’s marketing manager. “It’s special knowing you can take home something that’s handmade and local.”

In addition, the proceeds benefit the local artists as well as Foothills Art Center, a nonprofit.

This year, each display includes what Schoen called artist labels, which includes their photo a mini bio and a little bit about why they make

“Getting to know them gives you a connection and a reason why you’re shopping local,” Schoen said.

Hawley is a wood artist and has had his work in the HART for about seven or eight years, he said.

“It’s my favorite holiday show,” he said. “The variety is incredible.”

Hawley has been woodworking for about 30 years. But it really became a passion in retirement — first from the Army in 1986, and then following a 21-year career in contracts management in 2007.

Barbara Peraino of Genesee looks forward to shopping at HART every year, she said. On Nov. 27, she brought both her adult children and their significant others — all who live in the bay area in California.

Peraino enjoys browsing all the artwork, she said, but especially the pottery, glassware and woodcarvings.

“All the stuff you can’t find in regular stores,” Peraino said. HART “is for the really unique items. That’s why we come.”

Students with disabilities find jobs through Project SEARCH Program prepares locals for jobs in healthcare, retail

From an early age, Arvada resident Chris Cannizzaro was acquainted with the radiology department; even now, he can recall MRIs he had as a toddler.

“As a kid, I was afraid of the MRI machine,” he said. It wasn’t until high school, when Cannizzaro was considering a career in medicine, that he researched MRIs again.

“I was looking online and was like, `it doesn’t seem so scary,’” he said. After that, “it was actually my dream to work in radiology.”

Now 22, Cannizzaro has realized that dream and works in the radiology department of the UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, taking patients back to the exam room and preparing them for their MRIs. “I love getting to work with the patients and make them feel at ease,” he said. And he added that he owes it all to Project SEARCH. Started in Cincinnati in 1996, Project SEARCH is a free employment training program for students ages 18 through 20 who have intellectual disabilities.

The program runs internationally, with the Colorado branch organized by nonprofit Easterseals Colorado in partnership with several groups, in-

cluding Children’s Hospital Colorado, UCHealth and Jeffco Public Schools. It is funded through the state’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Project SEARCH runs from August to May, with participants completing two internships and more than 100 hours of instructional time with Jeffco teachers and paraprofessionals, or school aides.

In their internships, which range from placements in medical facilities to clerical positions in offices, students develop their workforce skills while narrowing down what kind of career they would like to pursue.

In the classroom, they learn a wide array of life skills from healthy eating, budgeting, mental health and social skills — everything “necessary to help them get a job out in the community,” said Megan Quinn, employment specialist with Easterseals Colorado. “The end goal is competitive employment.”

When Daniel Barela looks back on his time in Project SEARCH, he remembers learning important lessons both big and small, he said. Barela, who has a learning disability, participated in the program in 2016 before being connected with his current job at Target in Colorado Mills.

“It (Project SEARCH) was showing us that we’ve got to show up on time, and if we’ve ever got the cold, we have to call,” he said.

And in his internships, working in an office and in a hospital cafeteria, “it was a very important experience to

Project SEARCH is accepting applications for its 2020-2021 class, which will begin in August. Participants can download the application from http:// childrenscolorado.org/about/careers.

Applicants must be ages 18, 19 or 20 and be currently enrolled in a high school special education program or transition program. They must also

qualify for services from the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and Community Centered Board.

“My advice would be, don’t be nervous. Have fun with the job and interacting with the people you work with,” Cannizzaro said. “If there’s something bothering you, don’t let it get in your way. I learned that at Project SEARCH.”

Problem with heights is just medium high

I would rather not look down from high places. How about you?

QUIET I don’t have it bad, and it’s not vertigo. DESPERATION The misconception about Alfred Hitchcock’s film “Vertigo” is that vertigo is a fear of high places. It’s not.

Jimmy Stewart’s character correctly identifies it as “acrophobia.”

The art building at UCLA has eight floors, and my studio was

on the eighth. I could walk to the end of the hall and exit a door where there was an overlook to the ground.

It crossed my mind I might be able to fly from there to the first floor, instead of taking the elevator.

There’s an art museum in New York I will no longer attend, even if I were to have an exhibition (highly unlikely).

The Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Lloyd Wright sits opposite Central Park.

Wright decided viewers should look at art by standing on a spiral incline. The spiral incline goes up and up, and there’s not much to prevent someone from trying to fly from the top level to the first level except a short and easy-to-climb-

over wall.

Has anyone been to the Grand Canyon Skywalk?

How about the Royal Gorge Bridge?

I drove the “Million Dollar Highway” out of Ouray. Once. Nevermore. I looked over and didn’t see a guard rail. I imagined the valley below littered with Buicks.

I am not superstitious and I have very few allergies. I know I am allergic to Broadway musicals, which is a shame because I just heard that a film version of “Cats” is on its way.

Watching adults in kitty-cat suits would be a delight. Meow.

Unfortunately, Broadway musicals make me break out in mixed modifiers.

And, yes, for those of you that don’t run very much, that’s a very steep incline.

And it makes for really treacherous driving if there’s even a little bit of snow or ice, like last week,

speaking as someone who has had to reroute several trips in my life to avoid or recover from a failure on that hill. So, hats off to the city for keeping that stretch clean last week.

So, can I ask why the relatively flat stretch of Ward Road from 64th to 58th didn’t get clean until Saturday, four days after the storm ended? And, then the next stretch from 58th down to I-70 was just as bad, which is awful because it’s not a very flat stretch. And, I understand that the city has to triage your roads and prioritize, but it took four days! And you only have one significant north-south road on the west end of the city — wouldn’t you want to get it cleaned up pretty quick?

Ya know, not ironic — just one of those things.

And let me tell you another one: Christmas lights. I am one of those guys who tried to wait until Thanksgiving week to get my outside decorating done, and, well…. I failed. I was fortunate to get a little yard work done before the storm arrived, but that was it. No decorating.

But, what I don’t understand is those people who showed much

And, finally, I’m writing this as I’m watching the last seconds tick off of the Broncos’ strange and unlikely win over the Los Angeles Chargers. It’s about time the Broncos were the beneficiaries of luck this season: the Chargers’ kicker doinks one off the goalpost that could have been decisive, and then the refs throw a flag in the last 10 seconds that sets Denver up for the winning kick. Go figure.

The Jeffco 2020 Budget similarly presents a budget of $605.3M, reduced from the 2019 Budget because of the failure of Prop. 1A. The 2020 Colorado State Budget of 231 pages presents a Budget of $30.5 billion.

So much for a lack of transparency.

TABOR, he was a businessman and landlord with an incentive to reduce his taxes. In 1992 the TABOR Amendment passed with 812,306 (53.62%) to 700,906 (46.32%). There are currently 3,811,578 registered voters in Colorado. If TABOR is never repealed or modified, Colorado will never have the revenue to fix the many things that need fixing.

Metro area offers wide range of volunteer opportunities during this season

o matter the skill level, interests or time constraints of Denver metro area residents, there is a way they can make a difference this winter.

Whether it’s donating time, toys, money or labor, many nonprofits in the area have unique and critical volunteer opportunities this time of year.

At Rosie’s Ranch in Parker, horses — used in warmer months to provide equine therapy to people with special needs — need to be walked and cared for.

“We have our horses year-round,” said owner Mary Stathes. “They still need to eat and get exercised.”

Caring for the horses could mean anything from hand-walking them to cleaning out their stalls.

“Typically, what people say is they come here expecting to give, not to get,” Stathes said. “They leave absolutely in awe of how much they received as a human being.”

Other animal lovers with a passion for agriculture can volunteer at CALF — Colorado Agricultural Leadership Foundation — in Castle Rock, helping care for the ranch

“This time of year, we have donkeys, goats, chickens and pigs,” CEO Brooke Fox said.

CALF’s goal is to connect people to agriculture through education, Fox said. The group hosts field trips, grows crops and teaches people about where their food comes from.

“Even though the work is hard, it’s reconnecting people to the land and just kind of helping have a better understanding of the basics of life,” Fox said.

In the winter, the ranch needs help feeding the animals, cleaning out their pens and keeping the barn organized, she said.

Both organizations welcome people of all ages and skill levels but prefer parental supervision for younger children.

n here are quite a few different approaches to take h when it comes to Christmas plays, and Lakewood’s t s Benchmark Theatre decided to embrace the warmth and humor c d of the season with its regional premiere of E.P. Dowdall’s “ParH fumerie.”

“We thought it was time to challenge ourselves and our growing audience with a traditional, period, romantic Clarke Reader comedy which is not anything we’ve attempted before.”

“Parfumerie” which is also the final production of the 2019 season, runs through Sunday, Dec. 21 at The Bench at 40West, 1560 Teller St. in Lakewood’s 40West Arts District. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 6 p.m. on Sunday. There will be half-priced performances on Thursday, Dec. 5, 12 and 19.

Directed by Rachel Rogers, the show is the inspiration for Jimmy Stewart’s “The Shop Around the Corner,” the rom-com, “You’ve Got Mail,” and the musical, “She Loves Me.” Right before Christmas, George Horvath is fired after he’s mistakenly suspected to be the lover of his unfaithful wife.

George is already having romance problems, when he discovers the stranger he has fallen in love with through a secret correspondence is Amalia Balash, a colleague he constantly argues with.

The story focuses on the interplay between two people who seem incredibly different, but actually share the same heart.

And in its exploration of darker subjects, the show is reminiscent of another famous Christmas story - “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The Action Center in Jefferson County, a more than 50-year-old organization serving homeless people.

The organization, which serves about 20,000 families every year, uses about 70 volunteers per day to keep their work going, said Barbara Penning, the director of volunteer programs and products.

During the holiday season, many of the consistent volunteers are traveling and unable to help, Penning said.

“Having a backup of people when our regular volunteers are taking some time off is huge,” she said.

These helpers assist in sorting food, clothing, bedding and shoes, accepting donations and leading teams for specific events.

“We have a wide variety of experiences,” Penning said.

From Dec. 9 through 14, the organization is hosting a free Holiday Gift Shop for the families they serve. They will need volunteers to help stock the shelves and guide parents as they choose items for their children from about 30,000 donated gifts.

Helping seniors with snow For those who like to be active, there are also opportunities in many counties and municipalities to help shovel snow for elderly neighbors.

Despite being a show that’s been around for so long, Johnson said there’s a special kind of excitement in being the first to bring “Parfumerie“ to a Denver-metro stage. She said it’s a great chance for local artists to collaborate on a project that is fresh and new.

“This is an opportunity to return to the nostalgia and sparkling sheen of those popular 1930s and 1940s romantic comedies,” she said. “It’s set during the holidays, so it still has a warmth and seasonal charm, but it’s focused on the characters and their intersecting stories rather than the holidays themselves. It hasn’t been done regionally before, so we’re thrilled to be bringing it to the Denver Metro.”

There are also similar programs through the city governments in Arvada and Littleton. Volunteers of America also has a Snow Buddies program serving Denver, Jefferson, Douglas, Adams and Arapahoe counties.

For many of these organizations throughout the Denver metro area, volunteers make their work possible.

“Volunteers are the backbone of our organization,” said Stathes of Rosie’s Ranch. “Anyone that wants to come and help is more than welcome.”

Monday, Dec. 23, uses only five actors to tell the famous story. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 1 and 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Denver Film Festival encourages wide-eyed viewing Five films not to be missed

This movie aims to shake you to your core. It does.

With all the streaming services out there, and all the devices capable of becoming a movie screen, film festivals provide a fading resource — an opportunity to see independent and streaming movies on the big screen.

“In almost no other environment today can you see a movie without knowing anything about it,” said director Rian Johnson, recipient of the 2019 John Cassavetes Award.

“There’s something wonderful about that.”

During the 42nd annual Denver Film Festival, I saw 15 films over 11 days — films that challenged me, perplexed me, and one that even sent shivers up my spine. Of those 15, here’s five that I highly recommend you seek out in the coming months:

‘The Human Factor’ Release date: Early 2020 Director Dror Moreh’s “The Human Factor,” takes audiences behind the scenes of the 1990s efforts by the United States to broker peace between Israel and its neighbors by interviewing the six American diplomats who worked tirelessly on the project. It plays out like a thriller,

but a heartbreaking one, because you know how it ends.

The film is a fascinating exploration of the peace process and how culture and history make that process difficult. As one negotiator says, “The Middle East is about history. That’s its curse.”

What is perhaps most striking is the all the ways Johnson brings the issues so many families are currently facing into a thriller this engrossing.

‘Olympic Dreams’ Release date: Feb. 14, 2020 Most of the time, love and relationships aren’t like they’re portrayed in the movies. Real relationships usually don’t include a whole lot of grand gestures, but rather small moments between two people who care deeply about each other.

That’s real intimacy, and that’s what “Olympic Dreams” is all about.

The first movie ever filmed on location during the Olympics in Athletes Village (in this case, the 2018 winter games in PyeongChang, South Korea), this stunner follows real Greek-American athlete Alexi Pappas through her time at the games, where she meets volunteer dentist Ezra (Nick Kroll, in his most nuanced performance to date).

What follows is a love story made up of perfect small moments, shared jokes and hopes, and the power of meeting a person who allows you to be your truest self. The Arvada judge gives it a perfect 10.

‘Sorry We Missed You’ Release date: March 6, 2020 The films of British director Ken Loach focus on people who could be your neighbors, co-workers, and even relatives. His latest, “Sorry We Missed You,” is bleaker and more relatable than ever.

The film examines the pitfalls of the “gig economy,” as a struggling British family tries to find financial stability in the new economy.

Loach is attuned to every detail and the movie is shot with an eye for the beautiful in the mundane.

Mostly, you can feel his rage at the way so many families are living in our new society. It’s clearly getting under Loach’s skin. With “Sorry We Missed You,” it gets under yours as well.

Benchmark presents regional premiere of ‘Parfumerie’ Final production of theater company’s 2019 season runs Nov. 22 to Dec. 21 STAFF REPORT

The sixth and final production of the Benchmark Theatre 2019 season is a warm comedy that follows the tangled tale of the various employees of a perfume shop.

The regional premiere of E.P. Dowdall’s “Parfumerie” opens Friday, Nov. 22 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 22 at the theater company’s home, The Bench at 40West at 1560 Teller St., in the 40West Arts District in Lakewood.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 6 p.m. Sundays, with no performance Nov. 29 because of Thanksgiving. Industry night is set for Monday, Dec. 2, with additional half-priced performances on Thursday, Dec. 5, Dec. 12 and Dec. 19. General admission tickets are

Maya Ferrario and Haley Johnson. The creative team includes Michael J. Green Mountain’s postseason run ends with state semifinal loss

LAKEWOOD — Green Mountain’s most successful postseason football run in 20 years came to an end at blustery cold Jeffco Stadium on Nov. 30.

“It sucks right now, but it was awesome to come out with the boys again,” Green Mountain senior Trey Towndrow said moments after the Rams’ 42-21 loss to Palmer Ridge in the Class 3A state semifinal game. “None of these games were guaranteed out here. We just kept fighting for it. We got this far. It was awesome.”

The Rams (10-3 record) put up a fight against the two-time defending 3A state champs. However, three fourthquarter touchdowns by the Bears (112) sealed the victory for Palmer Ridge.

The plan for Bears’ senior Raef Ruel was to get a little dirty Saturday night.

“I’m kind of proud that I’m filthy,” said Ruel who had the dirtiest jersey on the field after rushing 39 times for 279 yards and four touchdowns.

Palmer Ridge squares off against Pueblo South in the 3A state championship game next Saturday at Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl on the campus of Colorado State University-Pueblo. The No. 2-seeded Colts defeated Fredrick 28-24 in the other 3A semifinal played in Pueblo.

The Bears versus Colts will be a rematch from earlier this season.

Palmer Ridge edged Pueblo South 2419 at the ThunderBowl.

“I know Pueblo South is hungry for that,” Ruel said of the showdown in Pueblo next Saturday. “We played them early in the season and I’m sure they want revenge on us.”

Palmer Ridge was in a tight battle early in the fourth quarter at Jeffco Stadium, during the third state semifinal game played on the same field in the span of 24 hours. Towndrow’s 27yard touchdown run with 10:24 left in the fourth quarter cut Palmer Ridge’s lead to 21-14, but the Bears answered in the hurry.

four plays, all carries by Ruel who finished out the drive with a 23-yard touchdown run.

“I’m pretty sure we ran the same play four times in a row there,” Ruel said of his third touchdown run that pushed the Bears’ lead back up to a two-score game at 27-14. “We were all kind of getting nervous because (Green Mountain) is a good team. They hit hard and a well-coached. When we answered back it relieved some stress.”

A fourth touchdown run by Ruel and a 52-yard kickoff return by senior Anthony Roberson II for a touchdown on an onside kick attempt by the Rams allowed the Bears to reach the 40-point mark for the 11th time this season.

Facing a stiff north wind Palmer Ridge’s vaunted passing attack had to make some adjustments. Palmer Ridge junior quarterback Luke McAllister didn’t throw a touchdown pass for only the second time this season. In-

stead, the Bears went to their running attack spearheaded by Ruel and aided by their massive offensive line.

“It’s tough,” Green Mountain coach Jesse German said matching up against Palmer Ridge’s size up-front.

“They are a really big team. We just couldn’t anchor down the B and C gap well enough. There were creases there and he (Ruel) found them.”

Palmer Ridge jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with a 9-yard touchdown run by senior Noah Brom and 22-yard rushing score Ruel.

Green Mountain cut the Bears’ lead in half midway through the second quarter. Towndrow weaved his way into the end zone for a 37-yard touchdown to make it a 14-7 lead for Palmer Ridge. Towndrow accounted for all three of the Rams’ touchdowns in the season-end loss for Green Mountain.

“I’m just really proud of this team and these seniors,” German said.

“They have done so much to change the culture.”

Green Mountain’s last trip to the state semifinals came back in 1999 when the Rams won the Class 4A state championship.

Ralston Valley edged by rival Columbine in 5A state semifinal

LAKEWOOD — Columbine senior quarterback Jadon Holliday’s 1-yard plunge into a snow covered end zone Nov. 29 at Jeffco Stadium punched the Rebels’ ticket to the Class 5A state championship game.

“We knew we needed to score,” Holliday said. “We knew we still had to finish it. It wasn’t over yet.”

The loss for Ralston Valley (12-1 record) ended a tremendous season for the Mustangs and the program’s deepest playoff run since the 2014. Five seasons ago, Ralston Valley drove into the 5A state semifinals undefeated too

before losing to eventual state champion Cherry Creek.

Columbine ground game was just too much for Ralston Valley on the snowy Friday night. The Rebels ran the ball 54 times for 293 yards and four touchdowns.

Columbine senior Tanner Hollens scored two of those touchdowns in the Class 5A football state semifinal game against Jeffco rival Ralston Valley. No. 6-seeded Columbine moved into next week’s 5A title game with a 29-15 victory over No. 2 and previously undefeated Ralston Valley.

“All day we were hoping it would snow, rain or be windy,” Hollens said after the Rebels got revenge after a

regular-season loss to Ralston Valley.

“They threw the ball on us last time.

For the most part we stopped them.”

The second touchdown run by Hollens pushed the Rebels’ lead to 22-6 midway through the third quarter.

Columbine was able to capitalize, taking over on the Mustangs’ 20-yard line after a Ralston Valley turnover.

Columbine (11-2 record) faces No. 1 Cherry Creek at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Empower Field at Mile High in the 5A title game. The Bruins defeated Pomona 14-7 in the other semifinal game played Nov. 30 at Stutler Bowl.

Hollens started the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown run on the Rebels’ first drive of the game. Columbine

was able to convert a 2-point conversion with a run by Holliday to put the Rebels up 8-0 with 7:17 left in the first quarter.

Ralston Valley was able to get its offense going late in the first quarter with a pair of long passes from senior quarterback Walker Brickle to Chase Wilson and JJ Galbreath. Brickle finished off the drive with a 25-yard screen pass to Wilson for a touchdown, but a missed extra-point kept Columbine with a 8-6 lead.

Columbine responded with a quick 78-yard drive to close out the first half and extend the lead to 14-6 at halftime.

Lakewood basketball standout earning Ivy League honors STAFF REPORT

After earning MVP honors and helping Yale to two wins at LMU’s Thanksgiving Classic this past weekend, forward Camilla Emsbo (Lakewood) of the Yale women’s basketball team has been named Ivy League Player of the Week. The league announced the award on Monday.

Emsbo tied her career high with 26 points and set her career high with 17 rebounds in Friday’s 8767 win vs. Fresno State in the first game of LMU’s Thanksgiving Classic. That was her fourth doubledouble of the season, more than any other Ivy Leaguer.

Emsbo followed that up with 15 points and five rebounds in Saturday’s 81-65 win vs. LMU. She also had 13 points and six rebounds in Yale’s game at No. 11 UCLA Tuesday.

For the season Emsbo leads the Ivy League in rebounding (10.3 rebounds per game) and blocks (2.9 per game, 11th nationally). She is fifth in scoring (16.4 points per game).

Emsbo earned seven Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors last year. She was a five-star ESPN recruit out of Lakewood High, and ESPN ranked her as the No. 34 best recruit in the country (sixth-best at her position).

Emsbo is in Branford College at Yale. Her identical twin sister, Kira, plays for Princeton. Kira Emsbo put up 44 points and 48 rebounds in her freshman year.

Ralston Valley brought it back within 22-12 on the first play of the fourth quarter. A 23-yard touchdown pass from Brickle to senior Caleb Rillos pulled the Mustangs within 10 points, but a failed 2-point conversion kept it a 2-score lead for the Rebels.

The Mustangs got the ball right back with junior Will Lester recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. However, Columbine defense held Ralston Valley to a field goal.

The 19-yard kick by sophomore Steele Fredricks closed the Rebels’ lead to 22-15 with 8:12 left in the fourth quarter.

Columbine got the ball back and chewed a ton of time off the clock, driving all the way down to Ralston Valley’s 1-yardline.

“We talked about before the drive that we needed an 8-minute drive to give (Ralston Valley) no hope,” Hollens said.

“We went down and scored. It turned out good.”

On fourth-and-goal, Holliday punched it in on a QB sneak to put his team up two scores.

“We have been hungry since last year,” Holliday said referring to a semifinal loss to Cherry Creek last year at Jeffco Stadium. “We have been grinding, grinding and grinding. Finally tonight it paid off.

Everyone has bought in. We are all brothers.”

Columbine senior La’akea Like finished the game intercepting Brickle on the final play of the game.

“I was pressing (Rillos) because he is an absolute freak,” Like said describing the final play. “He got past me but I saw

the ball come at me. It was amazing. I can’t even describe it. I’m so happy for everybody.”

The Rebels were able to end a streak of semifinal disappointment. Columbine had lost in the semifinals — 2018, 2017 and 2015 — in three of the past four seasons.

“Thank God we got through a semifinal,” Columbine coach Andy Lowry said. “We’ve been beat in double-overtime and in the end of the game against Pomona by a point. Heartaches all the way through. I remember those a lot more than our wins, but next week will help soften those blows a bit.”

The Rebels are perfect 5-0 in 5A state championship games under Lowry. Columbine’s last title came in 2011.

The first go-around between Ralston Valley and Columbine at Jeffco Stadium was an instant classic. The Mustangs rallied in the final minutes to take a 24-23 victory over the Rebels.

Brickle connected with Galbreath for a 60-yard touchdown pass with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter. A successful two-point conversion run by Wilson gave the Mustangs the 1-point victory.
