MY NAME IS

TOM LAMARR

Lakewood resident and author of ‘Zero Gravity’ About me After growing up in Dubuque, Iowa, on a hill overlooking the Mississippi River, I attended the Iowa Fiction Writers’ Workshop in Iowa City. I met my wife while working in Florida, where my latest book happens to take place.

We moved here after honeymooning at my aunt and uncle’s cabin near Indian Hills. Anne fell in love with the mountains and lack of humidity. I had always wanted to live here, so here we are.

We’ve been in Lakewood for nearly three years. Before that we had a house in Golden, on the base of Mount Zion, but moved east to lessen the commute to our daughter’s school.

Becoming a writer As far back as middle school, I was the kid asked to read his writing assignments in front of English class.

So, it’s hard to remember not wanting to write.

It was at the Iowa Writers Workshop, ironically, that I talked myself out of it. I suffer from an impediment, you see — I’m good at math — and I realistically assessed the impossibility of finding success as a writer. As such, I was well into my 30s before I really started. Fortunately, by the time my

first novel came out, getting good reviews and endorsements from heroes like Joseph Heller, I was addicted. I had discovered that, even with all the boredom and frustration, there was nothing more satisfying — no bigger rush — than watching all the pieces fall into place.

Writing ‘Zero Gravity’ Intended as a young adult novel, though grownups have liked it as well, “Zero Gravity,” takes place in a not-so-distant future. Gravity is losing strength, baffling scientists as much as the rest of us.

The characters in my novel are eating constantly — they call this Maintaining — trying to add bulk to offset each new drop in gravity. But time is running out, and more drastic action is required. Adam Weaver and his family embark on a dangerous quest to reach NASA’s Ark, a spacecraft that may not even exist. It’s said to be a NASA office building fitted for space travel that will lift off on its own when Zero G hits.

The power of the written word I can’t imagine a world without. I just finished reading a great novel, “All the Light We Cannot See,” and beyond the occasional jealousy I felt over the author’s passion, brilliance and meticulousness, I felt glad to be alive, even proud to be part of our flawed human experience.

Still, I had to remind myself that “Zero Gravity” has more laughs. And in fact, I think I too succeeded in creating something uplifting — no pun

Police investigate fatal hit-and-run STAFF REPORT

The Lakewood Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating a fatal hit-and-run pedestrian accident that took place at about 10 p.m. on Nov. 22, near the intersection of West 13th Avenue and Otis Street. The accident happened when an eastbound vehicle struck a man who was in the West 13th Avenue roadway.

After the crash, footage from surrounding location showed the vehicle stopping and, after pausing, leaving the area, police said. Video shows the

vehicle to be a white, smaller car with a sunroof. Detectives are interviewing witnesses and reviewing video to obtain a make and model and license plate.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity is still unknown and awaiting the coroner notification of family members.

Anyone with information that would assist detectives in their investigation is asked to call the Lakewood Police Department at 303-987-7111 or Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).

If You’re a Veteran, You Owe It to Yourself to Consider Using a VA Loan As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a mortgage broker — frankly, I don’t think real estate agents should be in that business — but I know enough about VA loans to say that any veteran purchasing a home with a mortgage should ask their lender whether a VA loan might be right for them.

This is particularly true for veterans with a 10% or greater disability, because for them the VA funding fee is waived, making a VA loan an easy choice over a conventional, FHA or even a jumbo loan.

A VA jumbo loan is one that is in excess of the conforming limit, which varies by county (the limit in Jeffco, for example is $493,350). You may think that the VA loan limit is that amount, but that’s merely the limit for 100% financing. You can borrow much more than that amount — up to $1.5 million — as long as you put down at least 25% of the difference between the purchase price and the VA limit.

The following useful information about VA loans was gleaned from the VA’s website: VA home loans are provided by private lenders, such as banks and mortgage companies. VA guarantees a portion of the loan, enabling your lender to provide you with

more favorable terms, including: No down payment as long as the sales price doesn't exceed the appraised value. No private mortgage insurance premium requirement. VA rules limit the amount you can be charged for closing costs. Closing costs may be paid by the seller. The lender can't charge you a penalty fee if you pay the loan off early. VA may be able to provide you some assistance if you run into difficulty making payments.

You should also know that: You don't have to be a first-time homebuyer. You can reuse the benefit. VA-backed loans are assumable, as long as the person assuming the loan qualifies.

Local charities gear up for Colorado Gives Day Participating Jeffco nonprofits number more than 1,660

An old saying goes: A rising tide lifts all boats.

And such is true on Colorado Gives Day. “We always say giving to your local community is best because you’re helping your neighbors,” said Randy Weinert, development manager for Arvada Community Food Bank. “And if we’re helping the people in our community, we’re helping all of the community.”

Colorado Gives Day — Dec. 5 this year — is an annual, statewide event that dedicates one day to increasing philanthropy through online giving.

“On this one day, every year, all of Colorado gets to help Colorado,” said Karen Allen, executive director of Colorado Homeless Families.

More than 2,300 nonprofits and charities from across the state are participating, and more than 1,660 of them are based in or have reach in Jefferson County.

A number of those work hard to help Jeffco’s homeless population.

“Affordable housing for our homeless families is crucial,” Allen said.

“Colorado Gives Day is a great opportunity to help.”

Colorado Homeless Families has been involved with Colorado Gives Day since 2011. The nonprofit, which is headquartered in Arvada but serves the greater seven-county metro area, helps provide transitional housing and supportive services to families in need.

“All of them are working families,” Allen said, “they just can’t afford housing in this housing crisis.”

Colorado Homeless Families’ goal is to target the root cause of homelessness by equipping families with the tools and opportunities they need to achieve self-sufficiency.

In fact, in the 30 years the nonprofit has been in existence, 167 people went from homelessness to home ownership, Allen said.

Family Tree, based in Wheat Ridge, is another organization working to support individuals and families who

are struggling for a variety of reasons.

Eighty-two percent of every dollar that Family Tree receives goes towards the nonprofit’s programs and services, said Carrie Zwanzig, Family Tree’s director of grants and communications.

That means the percentage of its $40,000 goal to be donated on Colorado Gives Day will go a long way, Zwanzig added.

Family Tree’s programs and services help individuals, families and communities overcome and end child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness. It runs one homeless shelter in Arapahoe County that serves all of the Denver-metro area and operates the only domestic violence emergency shelter in Jefferson County.

“Giving on Colorado Gives Day is an important partnership among all Coloradoans to give back to the communities they are a part of,” Zwanzig said.

But not only that, she said, the day gives people the opportunity to learn about new charities and explore nonprofits they may not know about.

Last year, the Arvada Community Food Bank, which serves northern Jefferson County, received $58,098 in donations on Colorado Gives Day. In 2015, the amount was $66,835, Weinert said.

“So many people save their donations specifically for Colorado Gives Day. It’s a great day to give,” he said.

“It’s well-placed for both holiday giving and end-of-year giving.”

Colorado Mills reopens: ‘It feels like being home’ Reconstruction from devastating hailstorm will continue into 2018

For Jim Hildenbrandt and Buck Harris, members of the former Mills Walkers, a group of senior citizens who walked the nearly mile-long paths of the mall since it opened in November 2002, the reopening of most of the mall last week felt like coming home.

“We’ve walked this mall since it was first constructed, and we missed it,” Hildenbrandt said amid the mall’s partial reopening on Nov. 21. “We missed meeting the people that we’d see while we’re walking.”

About 100 of the mall’s 160 stores opened to customers during Thanksgiving week, six months after a devastating May 8 hailstorm ripped open roofs and flooded stores, leaving millions of dollars in damages and lost livelihoods in its wake and siphoning nearly $3 million in sales tax revenue from Lakewood city coffers.

During the months of reconstruction, Hildenbrandt and Harris walked in the Super Target, which reopened shortly after the storm. But it wasn’t the same. Now, both men are looking forward to the group starting back up again.

As the pair left Kataluma Chai, a tea and coffee cafe near Dick’s Sporting Goods, Harris stopped and added: “It feels like being home.”

Significant damage Colorado Mills Mall, 14500 W. Colfax Ave., was far from the only Lakewood business affected by the sudden hailstorm, but it received some of the most significant and costly damage.

The storm battered and breached the roof, and shattered skylights. Rain poured into the mall, causing considerable water damage to common areas, retailers and their stocks.

“People always ask what it was like that day, and for me, it was the sound,” said Kimra Perkins, the mall’s general manager. “It was especially deafening.

And the water damage was immediate.”

In the following weeks and months, some tenants with exterior entrances, including the Yard House restaurant, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Yoga Pad, Super Target, JumpStreet and UA Colorado Mills Stadium 16, reopened.

Simon Property Group, owner of Colorado Mills, said it could not release a cost for reconstruction because the process is still ongoing, but estimates it will be in the “multimillions.”

The mall closure has cost the city about $300,000 to $350,000 a month in tax revenue, said Larry Dorr, Lakewood’s finance director. During Lakewood’s budget process in September and October, Dorr spoke about the closure’s effect on the city’s finances.

“We wouldn’t be fiscally responsible if we weren’t mindful of the mall’s closure,” he told the city council. “We’re forecasting a $2.7 million reduction in 2017 because of the Mills closure.”

For years, Lakewood has been careful about its reserves, which Dorr noted will help with the loss of income from the Mills. By using money from the city’s reserves, the loss will not affect any programs in the city.

“It’s been a long and painful process getting the mall back,” Mayor Adam Paul said.

“It’s so important that it was able to be reopened during the holiday season, since this is such a tough time for brick-and-mortar businesses with all the ways to shop online. The timing is crucial.”

At 1.1 million square feet, Colorado Mills is the largest outlet retail center in the state, with 119 outlet and value retail stores. More than 100 of these businesses and restaurants will be open in November and December, including J. Crew Factory, LEGO, Burlington and Victoria’s Secret.

“We wanted to focus on getting people back to work,” Perkins said.

“That’s why we’re opening at this early date, with the support of the city, fire department and so many others.”

TEA AND COFFEE SHOP ‘READY TO SERVE CUSTOMERS AGAIN’ Mailie Medina, owner of Kataluma Chai, wasn’t at Colorado Mills when the May 8 storm happened. But when she received a call from her manager that night, she couldn’t have known how long the road to reopening would take.

“I’m so excited to welcome customers and shoppers back again,” she said. “These past six months have been a long time to wait.”

Kataluma, a tea and coffee cafe located near Dick’s Sporting Goods, has been in the mall since it opened in 2002, and has built up a loyal base of customers who like the taste of chai and who also like supporting a local business. The cafe sells coffee and some baked goods, but the chai is where it shines.

It features hundreds of chai flavors made by staff, and can prepare it anyway the customer wants — hot, iced, blended and even as milkshakes Medina started out as a barista at Kataluma, working there for 12 years before taking over

ownership two years ago.

The storm caused severe water damage to the store, which also lost much of its wooden furniture.

As the mall is 15 years old, part of the reconstruction process has been to update some of the infrastructure to the newest materials and technologies, said Kimra Perkins, the mall’s general manager. This includes LED lights, more sustainable technologies in the bathrooms, and stronger roofing, should another storm roll in.

Which is good news for business owners like Medina.

“I had six employees before the storm and, luckily, they’re all coming back,” she said.

“We’ve been working all night, but we’re ready to serve our customers again.”

Jefferson County leaders gathered to honor nine of their peers who have worked passionately in a variety of fields to make Jefferson County a better place at the West Chamber’s 16th annual Celebrate Women of Jefferson County.

The chamber inducted Mary Ann Barwick, Mary Anne Fleet, Julia HillNichols, Joyce Jay, Tracy Kraft-Tharp, Cherri Parks, Jennifer Ryan, Kami Welch and Christine White on Nov. 17 in a breakfast at Denver Marriott West.

Death of GMHS graduate investigated Suspect made threats to Green Mountain students STAFF REPORT

Green Mountain High School is dealing with a doubly troubling situation, following the death of Makayla Grote, a 2016 graduate of the school, on Nov. 18.

The suspect in Grote’s death was recently a student at Green Mountain, and has been detained by law enforcement. In a letter to the Green Mountain community on Nov. 19, Principal Colleen Owens, wrote that since the suspect is a minor, no further information can be shared.

A vigil was held for Grote on Nov. 24 at Jackson Park, and a memorial was held for her at the Colorado National Speedway on Nov. 26. A GoFundMe has been set up for the Grote family at www.gofundme.com/ makayla-grote-memorial-fund.

“I would like to express my appreciation to all the staff, students, and community members that have extended support and kindness during this difficult time,” Owens wrote.

“It’s heartbreaking when violence touches our students and families, and hard to come to terms with how and why it happened.”

The suspect was the subject of a letter Owens sent out on Oct. 17, where she said a former Green Mountain

Colleen Owens, Principal, Green Mountain High School student had been making threats to current students.

“Students reported this incident to school administration and local law enforcement. Both Jeffco Public Schools security staff and local law enforcement quickly intervened and the student that made the threats is currently detained,” she wrote.

Owens also added in the Oct. 17 letter that the school could not share any details about the incident, but wanted to make sure community members knew the school was “taking action.”

In a statement sent to media, Diana Wilson, chief communications officer with Jeffco Schools, said the “tragedy is particularly heartbreaking because so many people on so many different levels worked to help the accused student as well as protect all our students.

School administrators, counselors and teachers, school district mental health, security and discipline staff,

local law enforcement, youth intervention specialists, community mental health workers and more were working with the suspect, his family, and other students and families to mitigate this threat,” Wilson’s statement continued.

The school district says it will not comment further on the incident due to student privacy laws and the ongoing investigation.

Both Owens and Wilson emphasized that moving forward, the focus is helping students, staff and the Green Mountain community grieve, including increasing security and mental health staff at the school.

“I know our GMHS family will grieve together, and I also know we will persevere together,” Owens wrote. “I hope our community will continue to take the high road - the media and others may speculate, but we will remain focused on taking care of our own.”

On to the next big adventure, friend mitty looked over his shoulder as he was carried away, and said, “Where am I going now,

Dad?” I said, “I’ve heard it’s a very big adventure.”

I knew why he was asking that question: Before we made eye contact at the MaxFund Animal Adoption Center in 2008, he was frequently moved from place to place and person to person.

And for the first three months, he spent as much time at the Dog-

gie Dude Ranch in Watkins as he did with me, because my father and mother decided they wanted to see what it was like on the other side of the looking glass.

So I went back and forth to Michigan — for their funerals and then to settle their estates.

That summer, I reintroduced myself to Smitty, a smoothcoated, red dachshund, and we became best friends.

I have written about him for years, so I won’t go into his attributes all over again. Whenever

Smitty is mentioned, I receive more messages than for anything else I write about.

I wanted to let you know I am working on a novella about Smitty.

(I got serious about this, and took an online novel writing class through the UCLA Extension School.)

There are cute and clever books about dogs all over the place.

Mine won’t be either. At least it won’t be cute. Smitty never sat on the top of his doghouse and

philosophized.

He never rescued anyone. Except me.

He came along after I retired and before Jennifer. It was a sketchy time in my life. I guess I was meant to have it: Single men who retire often head south, for a number of reasons.

I was heading in that direction, and then a friend sent a photograph of Smitty she had seen on MaxFund’s web site.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Future of state’s energy Xcel has just submitted a plan to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) that details how Colorado will generate our energy over the next four years. It invests heavily in renewable energy and brings Colorado on track to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. The plan proposes retiring two coal plants in Pueblo and replacing them with wind and solar. Although 90 Pueblo coal plant workers would need to be retrained, the renewable energy industry in Colorado employees 62,000 workers today and could surely employ 90 more.

Under this plan, our power bills will stay the same or even decrease. This is clearly a win-win, since we are getting cheaper energy, higher employment and fighting climate change.

Xcel needs 2/3 of the PUC commissioners to vote in favor of the the plan in order to move forward.

I’m hopeful these commissioners will do the right

thing and approve Xcel’s plan.

The case of Roy Moore brings to our attention a much bigger problem and puzzle for humanity. Do people change? Repent? Are you the same person now you were 30 or 40 years ago? If we assume people do not change, why bother with prison or rehabilitation. We must believe people can change, or there would be no need for prison, rehab or the like.

At this point we do not know if Mr. Moore is guilty or innocent, or perhaps it’s mixed bag of truth and untruth. Even if someone was guilty of something many years ago, and has since

o, about six weeks ago, I pulled a hamstring. It’s not my first pull, and I’m pretty sure it won’t be my last pull, but I have to say, it’s been especially annoying. I believe Phil Simms would call it “nagging”— I have to be a lot more aware of warming up slowly for activity and not doing anything that really stretches it.

See, as the body ages, the muscles become gradually less elastic. This HITTING means that they are both less flexible in action, and less resilient in recovery. HOME This same pull, 20years ago, would have been a little tight for a few days, and then a thing of the past, if it was even a pull at all — 20 years ago, that action probably passes uneventfully.

And, I know this, but somewhere in the back of my brain is the memory of a younger, more athletic me (not, actually, that much more athletic), and that tiny part of my brain has a really Michael Alcorn loud voice when I’m in a competitive setting.

The body isn’t the only thing that becomes less elastic as we age. And, no, I’m not talking about our intellect — we all know that the processor slows down as we get older. Personally, I’d be a lot happier if I could download some of the useless stuff that seems to always be on my brain’s “desktop” (Bill Murray movie quotes, 70s sports and 80 culture minutiae, politics) onto a flash drive to free up some work space.

I’m really not sure if that’s the exact mechanism for how the brain “performs,” but it helps me explain why I go to the grocery store with a list of three items, and return home with five, only two of which were on the original list. So I’m going to stick with that explanation.

But, no, I wasn’t talking about that. I was talking about the psyche, or the spirit. The spirit of youth is remarkable in its ability to bounce back from failures, much

I called to find out if Smitty was still available.

“Let me go see.” A woman put the phone down, and walked away. I could hear her footsteps. Then I could hear her coming back. “He’s here.”

His name wasn’t Smitty at the time.

I thought he needed a new one, to go with his new life.

Displayed near me right now is my father’s World War II flight jacket. In script, on the front right side, it says “Smitty.”

Later on, I called him every name imaginable — names of endearment — even after he was completely deaf.

changed and lead an exemplary life, or after paying a price in prison or rehab, do we continue to hold this against them? In the case of Bill Clinton and others I have seen no remorse or change of character, so why do so many people want to forgive him and not Moore, who apparently has no transgressions in the last 30 years, if at all? Are the Democrats now going to

I never put a hat on Smitty. People do things like that, I’ve heard. Dress up their dogs like dolls.

People make jokes about dachshunds all the time, but my friends know better than to try that around me. I make an exception when it comes to cartoonist Gary Larson.

“Give me a hand here, Etta. I got into a nest of wiener dogs over on Fifth and Maple.”

When he was younger, Smitty crawled into sweatshirt sleeves, and fell asleep. Later on, he could sleep anywhere at any time, and napping became one of our favorite things to do together.

If I said, “Let’s nap,” he just looked at me — and smiled.

A few days ago, Smitty went on life’s final big adventure.

more than adults. Though, it has to be said, youth is equally remarkable in its inability to separate what matters from what doesn’t. Luckily, as we grow older, we gain the wisdom to discern. At least, in theory.

One of my daughters has recently dealt with a couple of crushing disappointments — things that she wanted very badly, and actually put a lot of time and effort into, have just not gone her way. And, as a parent, it’s really hard to know just how to help our kids process that stuff. To a kid, the old “in the big picture” thing doesn’t really mean that much. It’s all big in their world. But, once she goes through her visceral reaction, nothing stops her from getting up the next day, squaring her shoulders to the world, and facing it head-on.

And I am SO THANKFUL for that spiritual resilience, I can barely

express it.

As a parent, I am painfully aware of how many times, on a daily basis, I screw up. As a teacher, who has literally dealt with thousands of students over the years, I am shockingly aware of how easy it is to say one stupid thing, or allow one bad facial expression to find its way out, or, even, sometimes, how I just don’t see what a kid needs me to see. And all you have to do is watch 10 minutes of the 5 o’clock news to see three new stories of the horrors we visit upon our children.

Fortunately for all of us, children are resilient. Children prove time and time again that they have an amazing ability to overcome a lot of what we adults do to them.

So this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for children — both mine and yours — and the superpower that they possess to take what we do to them keep moving forward. They give me hope.

Children love making pretzel-based treats Let’s get some of the warnings and negatives out of the way. One large pretzel rod has about 40 calories from the flour, but pretzels are basically nutritionally empty and may be a choking hazard for very young children.

Although very salty, pretzel treats are fun and easy to make. Bottom line: pretzel treats really LIFELONG taste good, reduce some of the sugar of LEARNING cookies, and add the Esther Macalady crunch children like.

Soft pretzels originated in Europe with the monks in the early Middle Ages and remain an emblem for bakers. They were brought to Pennsylvania Dutch country by the Germans.

The area still produces 80 percent of pretzels in the United States. Hard pretzels have no real nutritional value

but stay edible a long time and were introduced in 1850.

Pretzels Very Versatile Pretzels are good dipped in Greek yogurt, chocolate, mustard, melted cheese. They can be slathered with sun flower seed butter, a good substitute for peanut butter, Nutella, Parmesan cheese, jelly, white or dark chocolate. When crushed they are a good topping for ice cream or yogurt.

To make dipped hard pretzel logs with children, you’ll need one 12 ounce package of chocolate chips, dark chocolate or white chocolate; one teaspoon vegetable oil and 24 rods or package twists. Cover a cookie sheet with waxed paper. Mix the chocolate chips and oil in a bowl and place in a microwave for 30 seconds. Children can carefully stir with a wooden spoon

under supervision. If chips are not melted, return to the microwave for 10-15 seconds. Dip or spread chocolate with a spatula or table knife. Place on the cookie sheet to harden.

You can place contrasting melted chocolate frosting in decorator bag and children can drizzle more chocolate over the pretzels. Refrigerate for about 15 minutes and place in a covered container or eat on the spot while reading a few books.

Quick Pretzel Cookies Another salty sweet snack and not nutritious is pretzel cookies. You’ll need one bag of some kind of flat pretzel like the knot or lattice square and one bag of Hershey kisses or Rollo candy. Spread pretzels on a cookie sheet and place a Hershey kiss or Rollo chocolate butterscotch candy

on each pretzel. Place in the oven at 275 degrees for three minutes. Remove immediately. The candy should be melted. Come people place an M&M or pecan in the middle. With a Rollo and pecan the cookies taste like a chocolate turtle candy. Refrigerate until hardened and store in a covered container.

Thin pretzel sticks can be used as skewers or substitute forks. You can place cubes of cheese, meat, tofu, cut grapes, apples, pears, strawberries, blueberries, mango, or raspberries to spear and add nutrition.

When it comes to holiday shopping, chain stores and online outlets will try to pull in customers with quantity of items and deals.

But to find that unique gift — one specially and limitedly created by local artisans, bakers and craftsman — you have to look locally. And that’s where the multitude of holiday markets in communities around the Denver metro area come in.

“We’re a place where you can shop and savor the season,” said Natalia Wobst, executive director of the Colorado Chamber of the German American Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the annual Christkindl Market in Denver’s Skyline Park. “There’s a real feeling of community effort at this market, and vendors really get to know the customers. And customers know we’re a reliable place for good Christmas finds.”

There are dozens of markets to choose from heading into the holiday season, so we picked a handful from our coverage areas to highlight.

Adams County Holiday Bazaar WHERE: Adams County Fairgrounds, 9755 Henderson Road, Brighton HOURS: Saturday, Dec. 2, 9 a.m. to

4 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 3, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND: The bazaar features more than 300 booths in two buildings, all focused on handmade crafts. Corporate vendors and homebased franchises are not allowed.

The event also doubles as a benefit fundraiser for the Adams County Historical Society and Museum.

WHAT MAKES THE MARKET SPECIAL: “What makes a good market is new inventory and a variety of merchandise, and our vendors are personable and lovely to talk with,” said Marilyn Fingerlin, one of three co-organizers of the Adams County Historical Society bazaars. “They are always looking for new crafts to make to sell, and you will find quality handcrafted items for your home and all-occasion gifts.”

Arapahoe Ceramics Guild Holiday Sale WHERE: Arapahoe Community College, 5900 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton HOURS: Thursday, Nov. 30, 1 to 8 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 1, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 2, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND: The guild is composed of people who are students or former students in Arapahoe Community College’s ceramics program.

Items on sale include functional and decorative pieces made by all skill levels. There are limited amounts of each piece, which means shoppers will see a rotating stock of new pieces, said Melanie Unruh, the guild’s vice president.

he way Denver musician Barry Shapiro sees it, people don’t find themselves in Colorado by accident.

“Denver is the kind of place where people move here because they want to be here,” he said. “Denver draws people here for the right reason, and that openness extends to the music scene as well.”

Shapiro knows what he’s talking about — he was born in Brooklyn, and lived in Boston before coming to Colorado 27 years ago, when he was 18. He was inspired to start in music thanks to the inspiration of his mother and grandmother, who played piano. In high school, he got inspired by the work of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

Shapiro recorded his full-length debut album called “In Remission “ in 2000 about the healing power of music, followed it up in 2005 with “Beacon Street,” inspired by life in New England, and his most recent release is called “Boardwalk Rain.” His music is largely inspired by places he visits, and that includes Colorado.

“The Colorado music scene is a scene of nooks and crannies, and great little rooms that people don’t know about, and those are some of my favorite rooms to play,” Shapiro said. “My favorite thing about playing is when my creativity inspires somebody else to create something else.”

Author thrills readers with visit to Denver Dan Brown promotes most recent thriller at gathering in DTC

More than 1,000 excited readers arrived at the Denver Marriott Tech Center on Nov. 15 for “An Evening with Dan Brown,” jointly presented

by Douglas County Libraries and Tattered Cover Book Store. Despite publication of millions of his books in multiple languages (more than 52 million), the mild-mannered Brown reminds one of his globe-trotting college-professor/proBrown tagonist, Robert Langdon — bright, articulate, humorous — and certainly confident, but not ostentatious at all ... This is a guy one would love to chat with over coffee or a beer.

Many of those present bought not only a ticket, but a shiny blue copy of the new book, which will require some late nights of reading as Langdon travels in and out of trouble — mostly in Spain this trip. (He commented that the cover design is inspired by his experience looking down from the top of a steep spiral staircase at the Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona — Antonio Gaudi’s ongoing masterpiece.)

Brown is touring to introduce his latest thriller, published in October — “Origin” — and his publicists have provided a preliminary short background film that allowed this highly imaginative author to quickly get to the story at hand when he bounds to the platform. Like previous books, it deals with his ongoing interest in the juxtaposition of science and religion in our world today: “Will God survive science? Where did we come from?

Where are we going?”

Research for “Origin” began with a visit to the famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, designed

by Frank Gehry — Brown wished to be brought somewhat up to speed on modern art, which was not familiar territory.

CALM AFTER THE STORM And that’s where “Origin” begins its convoluted tale. “It was fun to throw Langdon into that scene,” he said with a grin.

Brown is the son of a math teacher and a devout church organist and was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, Amherst College and the University of Seville. He said he published his first book at age 5, dictated to his father and “tied together with red string: `Giraffe, Pig and Pants on Fire.’”

He recalled asking a priest which creation story is true and being told, “Nice boys don’t ask!” He graduated from Amherst College and taught at his alma mater until he could devote his attention to writing. He gets up at 4 a.m., faced with an empty page and produces yet another exciting chapter.

But, when asked “What’s next?” he gently reminded the questioner that “Origin” has just been out three weeks.

“You’re a mother, aren’t you? What if someone talked about the next baby three weeks after you’d given birth?”

Asia, Africa and Latin America would all like to be settings for a Langdon visit — Brown said he’d spent time in India, but wasn’t yet familiar enough “because it’s not in my tradition.

Would you be interested in setting big questions in the developing world?”

Several questions about his personal beliefs were parried. He sees “The Divine in interactions of people — I sense in moments like this love between you and me …” With a strong mother and a strong wife, he would never write about a “woman tied to the railroad tracks,” he added.

One participant probably spoke for all present: “Thank you for making us think!” she said.

ollowing months of work by South Lakewood Elementary staff, students, the PTA and parents, the school celebrated the unveiling of its new playground on Nov. 17.

The school received a $110,000 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) as part of its School Yard Initiative program to make improvements to the playground. The cost for the project will be about $300,000.

“This was a community effort, and the thing about volunteering is it so often inspires others to do the same,” said Tina Klismith, a member of the PTA and leader of the project. “You might think serving others is work, but it’s not when you see the reactions.”

Because of the closure, about 3,000 mall employees found themselves without work. To help the unemployed, Jefferson County’s American Job Center, Target and other companies stepped up to provide temporary job options to those in need.

“We have locations in Conifer and Cañon City, which is where we directed a lot of our customers and staff, as well as our artisans,” said Pennie Gaudi, owner of A Borgata, which specializes in products and crafts from local artisans — from candles to clothing and artwork to Colorado-themed gifts.

“Luckily, we have a lot of our artisans who are coming back, and it’s looking like we’ll have more than we did before.”

The Bear Creek High School gymnasium echoed with the sounds of varsity basketball competition for the first time this season Nov. 20 as the Bears hosted a four-team boys basketball scrimmage.

Elizabeth, D’Evelyn and Vista Peak joined the Bears at the scrimmage that used a roundrobin format. Each team played the other three teams and a running clock was used for each 20-minute scrimmage. No scores were kept but officials were on the court to call fouls if needed.

“I am pretty excited about this season,” Bears Coach Will Gosch said during a break in the action. “This is a group of boys who want to win and are willing to put in the extra work needed to win. We are learning to be selfless and that wins games. We have good hustle and good skills.

Now we are learning to play smart basketball.”

With eight seniors on last year’s roster, this year’s team has many new faces.

“We have six seniors on this

season’s team,” the coach said.

“Most of the guys on the varsity have come up through our program so they know our style of play. I was able to work with these players during the spring and summer, which is a big help developing individual skills and players into a team.”

He said the scrimmage is important in preparing for the season.

“This is the first time this season our guys are going against other teams,” Gosch said. “It provides a great opportunity to try combinations of different players to help develop team chemistry. It also is a good opportunity to see where we are as we test our skills against other teams.”

“I have played baseball and football but now I focus on my favorite sport, basketball,” he said. “I love basketball. Playing basketball helps me relieve stress and it is really a fun game to play. I think I like the game because there is constant action and you are always moving.”

He said he can score points but his strength is his defensive play.

“One of my goals is to do all I can to help my team this season,” he said. “My other goal this season is to play well enough to sign a scholarship to play college basketball.”

The Bears open the season Nov. 30 on the road against Doherty. Their first home game will be Dec. 5 against Liberty.

McHenry is head strength coach and physical education teacher at Castle View High School. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association Board of Directors and co-chair of the NSCA Secondary School Coaches Working Group.

He isn’t a technology expert but admits some weight training Jim Benton methods are outdated and progress is being made to change those old-fashioned training procedures. It has taken time to convince trainers that overwork can cause injuries.

Integrated and not isolated training is the new way of training.

“Integrated means you are going to add components in,” explained McHenry. “Now we are isolated. Kids grow up and play one sport, never learning to move in other patterns.

“To help avoid getting knee injuries, one of the first things we look at is if they are squatting properly. Sometimes when a person hurts their ACL, it’s because they have weak glutes which are causing their legs to move wrong. It’s often a non-contact injury.”

Growth spurts in teenagers should not be ignored.

“I must pay close attention to whether they are getting taller because growing adds something to the mix,” said McHenry. “A freshman may come into the high school at 5-foot-5. Then he starts growing, which changes his center of gravity. He may have to back off the weights and re-learn the movement patterns.”

McHenry still endorses strength training.

“Strength training is safe, but it’s important that it’s taught by someone who understands pediatric and adolescent exercise physiology,” he said.

“That’s a relatively new science.”

Specific sport training where athletes focus on individualized weight training and specific approach is helpful.

“With cross country, for example, I’ll work on stabilizing muscles so they can perform better later in the race,” added McHenry. “Golfers tend to do all their rotations on one side, so I help them work both sides equally.

“Tennis players have to be explosive. I help them work on that. Cheerleading is a sport with a notoriously high number of injuries. Can the base people handle the pressure of catching someone thrown high in the air? They may need the weight room more than most.

“The sport coach can be focused on strategy while the strength coach is focused on strength, recovery and nutrition. It frees up sport coaches to do their sport.”

McHenry, who has been at Castle View for 11 years, also has thoughts on burnout and creating well-rounded athletes.

Pomona football earns another title shot at Mile High Stadium

AURORA — Pomona is heading back to familiar territory.

The No. 4-seeded Panthers defeated No. 8 Grandview 42-20 on Nov. 25 at Legacy Stadium in the Class 5A football state semifinal. The victory punched Pomona’s ticket to a third straight trip to the championship game.

“With them (Grandview) just beating No. 1 Valor we knew they would come out firing,” said Pomona senior running back Max Borghi, who had 18 carries for 211 yards and three touchdowns (46, 19 and 56 yards) in the semifinal victory. “We did our jobs. We executed to get those big plays offensively and defensively.”

Pomona faces undefeated Eaglecrest in the title game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Mile High Stadium. The Raptors (13-0 record) defeated Columbine in a 32-31 double-overtime game in the first 5A semifinal played at Legacy Stadium on Saturday.

“Eaglecrest is tough up front,” Pomona coach Jay Madden said looking ahead to the Raptors. “They showed that against Columbine. We are excited, but we have a lot of work to do.”

Pomona has one football state championship title in the school’s trophy case. The Panthers defeated Montbello 24-21 in the 4A title game in 1988. While that win was decades ago, Pomona has plenty of recent championship game experience.

Pomona were the 5A state runnerup the previous two seasons to Valor Christian.

The Panthers (11-2) enter the title game this year with an 8-game winning streak.

“I can’t tell you how much fire I have in my chest and our whole team,” Borghi said of Pomona getting another chance at that elusive 5A state championship trophy.

“We are all playmakers,” said Marquez, who also gave a ton of credit to the Panthers’ offensive line to help Pomona put up 42 points on Grandview. “Colten and David made those plays tonight.”

Muller actually was Pomona’s quarterback for four games after Marquez broke his left arm. Marquez suffered the break in his non-throwing arm in Pomona’s conference opener Oct. 7.

Marquez returned for the playoffs and has been impressive. The senior was 19-for-29 for 549 yards and eight touchdowns through the air in blowout wins over Poudre and Fairview leading up to the semifinals.

The three-year starting quarterback was 9-for-15 for 295 yards and the two touchdown passes against the Wolves.

“That is the kind of offense we have right now,” Madden said of the two big pass plays that went the distance in the first quarter. “We are an explosive team and we try to get our guys in space. I think our offensive line was

the key tonight.”

The offensive line provided plenty of running room for Borghi. His 46-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter pushed the lead to 21-0. Borghi had another pair of touchdown runs called back because of penalties.

“Overall, this was one of our best games of the season,” said Borghi, who is nearly the 1,500-yard mark on the ground this season and averaging more than 10 yards per carry. “I feel like I had one of the best games I’ve ever had tonight.”

Borghi — a Washington State commit — tore his ACL in the state quarterfinals last season. The electric playmaker is making the most of his final prep postseason. Borghi had 30 carries for 427 yards and six touchdowns in wins over Poudre and Fairview.

Grandview did prevent getting shut out in the first half with a big run by senior quarterback Kyle Smith of 49 yards. Junior Jordan Billingsley scored on a short touchdown run to bring the score to 21-7 at halftime.

However, Saturday night belonged to the Panthers, who didn’t let up in the second half. Borghi scored on a 19-yard run on the Panthers’ opening drive of the second half to open up a 28-7 lead.

Borghi ran in his third touchdown run with 4:23 left in the third quarter to give Pomona a comfortable 35-7 lead. The icing on the cake for the Panthers was an interception senior Riley Welsch snagged in the fourth quarter and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.

“Our offensive line and our defense was great,” Madden said. “With our offensive line and defense growing up and doing that tonight ... that’s what we need to win next week.”

they play just one sport,” he said. “I see that all the time. Kids don’t want to play any more after high school. In contrast, studies find that kids who play multiple sports will peak later and not burn out early.

“I talk with them all the time and explain that the more sports they play, the more well-rounded they’ll be. You’d never have a student just study math or science all through school. They take

all the core classes — math, science, social studies and reading — to make them well-rounded. By the time they reach college, they have a good base and start to specialize.

“Sports should mirror school,” he continued. “We want kids to build on all the different abilities, because they are cumulative. As they get older, they are in better shape to specialize.”
