President of ASHRAE Building Our New Energy Future’ I started working at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in 1992 and I’ve been in various roles at the lab since. For about the past 10 years, I led a team of technical and clean energy policy experts working towards reducing nonrenewable energy consumption though optimized use of energy efficiency strategies and renewable energy technologies.

Right now, I’m on special assignment. I am the president of ASHRAE for the 2018-2019 term. My theme for the year of my presidency is Building Our New Energy Future.

Serving humanity and promoting sustainability ASHRAE is a volunteerdriven, global organization with more than 56,000 members in over 130 countries. It was founded in 1894 and has a mission to advance the arts and sciences of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigerating to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.

I’ve been an ASHRAE member for 31 years. I’ve held many ASHRAE leadership roles during this time including board of director positions as president elect, treasurer, vice president and director-at-large. ASHRAE is the leading organization providing technical knowledge regarding all aspects of how buildings use energy and for creating healthy, comfortable and productive indoor environments. Knowing that most of us spend nearly 90 percent of our time indoors, and that buildings consume more energy than any other sector, being a part of an organization like ASHRAE helps me feel that I am contributing to making the world a better

ASHRAE has actually been part of my history for my entire life. My father Richard Hayter was active in ASHRAE throughout his career and served as the ASHRAE president from 1995-1996.

Being a part of an enormous network ASHRAE members are professionals in the buildings industry. As president, I get the opportunity to meet passionate people from around the world who want to make a difference. It’s inspiring to work with them and implement positive change.

Another thing I’m enjoying is learning about myself.

Every day, my experiences as ASHRAE president are pushing my comfort zone with a brand-new challenge. It’s fun to discover what I am capable of doing.

After I finish my term as president at the end of June, my plan is to continue at NREL. I’ll also continue to be involved with ASHRAE, most likely for the rest of my career.

A proud community My husband Greg Oaklief and I grew up in Manhattan, Kansas. We have three children, and they’ve all gone to Golden schools. One son is a freshman at Golden High School and the other is a senior there. My daughter is studying mechanical engineering and flute at Montana State.

All three of my children are passionate skiers and mountain bikers. I enjoy these activities, too. What I’m doing with ASHRAE is a fulltime activity, but when I had more time, I was a ski instructor at Copper Mountain.

My family and I have lived in unincorporated Golden for 25 years. I enjoy Golden because it has such a strong sense of community. This is why people love Golden.

People want to be in Golden.

They’re proud of their community, and I am proud to be a part of that community.

Antoinette Martinez-Urioste had wanted to pursue community leadership for years. Unfortunately for her, she never knew where to start, or exactly what she wanted to do to impact the community. The Lakewood resident also felt like she had a lack of a support system, until she joined the Jefferson County Family Leadership Training Institute (FLTI).

The program is coordinated by Colorado State University Extension, and it gives Jefferson County adults and teens a free opportunity to develop into civic leaders. It lasts for 20 weeks, and participants learn how to utilize information and resources, how to engage with regional, state and federal elected officials, public speaking skills and other lessons.

Those lessons are valuable, but part of the program requires participants to develop a community project that is meaningful for them.

For Martinez-Urioste, she chose to create a program called Positively Accessible, because she believes that

children don’t have enough positive messages in things like music, the internet and movies. She is currently working on a booklet that gives children resources to help them improve their self-esteem, decision making and other aspects that deal with emotional aspects of life. The program is an outreach effort to bring positive messages into schools. Martinez-Urioste is working on a proposal for the presentation, and she may roll it out on the next annual student-led Day Without Hate event in April. Day Without Hate is a student led organization that aims to stop violence and bullying within schools.

“I’ve learned how to focus on the important things of a project and a goal, rather than keeping it broad. Now I’m able to get out there and know exactly what I’m focused on,” Martinez-Urioste said.

Adults and teens enrolled in the program meet once a week at the same time and location, in seperate classes that run at the same time.

Martinez-Urioste’s daughter Bianca Urioste participated in the program, and she is working on creating a new process of conflict resolution within schools. Urioste said the program has done nothing, but good things for her.

“I get a more positive vibe in my life by being around positive people (at FLTI), and it’s smothered me in good messages,” Urioste said.

“This program helps you grow as a person. I have seen it push people out of their comfort zones in a positive, supporting way,” Martinez-Urioste said. “I have seen this program change lives, and it can eventually change the community.”

Golden Real Estate’s Motto: ‘Hometown Service Delivered With Integrity’

When we established Golden Real Estate 11 years ago, I came up with two mottos for our company which you’ll find below our logo on all our yard signs. At right is that image.

The mottos also appear on our newest moving truck that we provide free to buyers, sellers and community non -profits.

I’ve written more than once about the second motto, “Promoting and Modeling Environmental Responsibility,” but this week I want to focus on the first one, which is “Hometown Service Delivered With Integrity.”

It’s interesting to recall not only how easily those two value statements came to me back in 2007, but also to recognize how we . have lived up to them in the years since and how important and relevant they feel so many years later.

My own relationship to integrity derives from my New England upbringing and specifically the influence of my somewhat aristocratic fae ther, Abbott Pliny Smith II. Dishonesty or lying had no place in our home. I can still hear Dad telling me, “Just because other people steal apples doesn’t make it right for you to steal apples.”

Dad taught me not to pretend to know things I didn’t know or claim to have experience I did not have. I remember one instance where following that advice really helped me. It was when I owned a typesetting company in New York called Journal Graphics. Because of my journalism training, I wanted to land the account with WNET to produce the transcripts for The MacNeil/Lehrer Report. But I had no experience with transcription and no current clients.

So I took the approach of actually transcribing one of their shows and delivering the tran-

script to the station the following morning with a cover letter to the executive producer saying I could do this every night overnight, including printing. A month later I was in the office of the woman in charge of transcripts, and she said, “Yes, and would you like to do Bill Moyers’ Journal, too?”

I responded, “Let’s do this. Let me do Bill Moyers’ show first, since it’s a weekly show, and once we’ve got that going smoothly, I’ll do the MacNeil/ Lehrer Report, which is daily.” Then she asked if we’d do fulfillment. Without hesitating, I asked, “What’s fulfillment?” She explained that it involves fulfilling the mailed-in orders. “That sounds very clerical, so I’m sure we could handle it,” I said. She then asked if we’d hire the two elderly volunteers who were doing that job for WNET, and I said, “Sure.”

Within a few years, we were doing all the transcripts for ABC News, Oprah Winfrey (and countless other daytime talk shows), CNN 24hours a day, and all NPR programs. And it all started by demonstrating I could do the job, but also being honest about my lack of experience.

Fast forward to my real estate career. In 2012, anti-Obamacare mass emails claimed that the Affordable Care Act included a 3.8% sales tax on the sale of every home. It was an outright distortion of a tax that applied only to investment income and only on Adjusted Gross Income in excess of $200,000 in a given year.

The email was designed, using false information, to whip up grass roots hatred of Obama in advance of his 2012 re-election.

umn was, “If You’re Selling Your Home Because of an ‘Obamacare Tax,’ You’ve Been Duped.”

At first, I figured it must be an innocent and unintentional misreading of the law, and I replied “All” to each email with the facts. But facts didn’t matter, and the emails continued in hopes of defeating Obama. This lack of integrity on the topic appalled me, but now that lack of integrity is magnified by the use of social media and the manipulation of voters continues unabated. Does it shock and dismay you as much as it does me?

Another wake-up call for me was that at least one of my own agents who received the mass email did not want to respond to it with the facts because she didn’t want to “be political” and to alienate prospective clients.

One reason I was drawn to joining Rotary was its “Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do.” I have published the Four-Way Test before, but I’ll repeat it here, and I urge you to consider whether certain politicians would pass even one of those tests of the things they think, say or do: “First, is it the Truth? Second, is it Fair to All Concerned? Third, Will it Build Good-

will and Better Friendships? And fourth, Will it be Beneficial to All Concerned?” I was never a Boy Scout, but the Scout Law also includes telling the truth in the first of its 12 laws.

Realtors subscribe to the Realtor Code of Ethics. Article 12 says that “Realtors shall be honest and truthful in their real estate communications and shall present a true picture in their advertising, marketing, and other representations.” Sadly, however, I recently reported on one Realtor whose business model includes misleading homeowners with notes taped to their front door saying “I may have a buyer for your house.” Not only does that Realtor not have a buyer, but he admitted to me that when he gets one, he refers the buyer to another agent and earns a referral fee. I doubt he changed his way of soliciting listings following my column.

he weather was chilly, but Belmar Elementary students bundled up and gathered at Addenbrooke Park to walk to school together on Oct. 10 for Walk to School Day. October is Colorado Pedestrian Month, and the day is meant to encourage children to practice pedestrian safety. Parents, teachers and neighbors participated as well, and Belmar Elementary students were loud, energetic and excited to take a different approach during their morning commute.

Colorado Community Media is hosting the 2018 Women’s Health and Beauty Expo presented by Aqua Spas on Oct. 20 at the Belmar Shopping District, 464 S. Teller St., Lakewood, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The free event will provide health screenings at no charge throughout the day from the Central Colorado Area Health Education Center. Lin Browning, executive director of the health education center, said it’s important to provide community health services at public service events.

“CCAHEC partners with communities to improve health education and outcomes,” she said. “The Women’s’ Health and Beauty Expo at Belmar is a unique opportunity to support health ... while engaging our students and team members in activities that further their understanding in the importance of public health and wellbeing.”

The health education center is also providing information on opioid addiction.

Providing entertainment for the event will be Dancin DJ services and Dress for Success, which will host a fashion show starting at 11 a.m. Amara Martin, executive director of Dress for Success Denver, said they are excited to be involved in an event promoting women’s health and

wellness.

Dress for Success is a nonprofit organization that prepares women for job interviews, from coaching to helping them pick out the right outfits for interviews and in the workplace. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a touch of pink will be on display in the fashion show, Martin said. The show starts at 11 a.m. in the center of the Belmar Shopping District Plaza.

“This fashion show is a celebration of Colorado and all the diverse women who bring their style to life,” Martin said. “The event will feature a variety of designers. Also, women served by our program will strut the runway. Dress for Success Denver is dedicated to improving the lives of women and thrilled to partner with Belmar and Colorado Community Media to support such an amazing event.”

Bill Coors dies at age 102 Golden resident known for developing the aluminum can

William “Bill” Coors, the man known for pioneering the aluminum can and former chairman of the board of Adolph Coors Company, died peacefully in his home at age 102 on Oct. 13.

A press release issued by Molson Coors quotes Bill Coors as once saying: “I’ve taken my kicks but I have had a fascinating life and I’ve been richly rewarded.”

In his lifetime, Bill Coors watched the Coors family business “grow from a small regional brewery that was distributed in only 12 states and producing 145,000 barrels of beer to a company that distributes worldwide and produces over 45 million barrels of beer,” states the press release.

Just in time for Bill Coors’ 100th birthday in 2016, the Golden Malting group named its newest variety of barley the Bill Coors 100. In 2017, Bill Coors received the Jeff Becker Beer Industry Service Award for a lifetime of dedication to the beer industry.

A comment issued by Mark Hunter, the president and CEO of Molson Coors, states, “our company stands on the shoulders of giants like Bill Coors. His dedication, hard work and ingenuity, helped shape not only our company but the entire beer industry.

We honor his memory by rededicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much — brewing the best tasting, highest quality beer to share with family and friends.”

The grandson of Adolph Coors who founded the Coors brewery in Golden in 1873, Bill Coors began his career with the Coors company in 1939. He started out at Coors Porcelain Company which is today’s CoorsTek. Joe Coors Sr. took over leadership at Coors Porcelain in 1946 and Bill Coors transitioned to the brewery to assist his father. In 1949, Bill Coors and his brother Joe Coors purchased land in the San Luis Valley and started their experimental barley farm.

The aluminum can came along in 1959 at the beginning of Bill Coors’ tenure with the company.

The press release notes that Bill Coors “struggled with and overcame tragedy, health issues and stress, and he was passionate about sharing what he learned with others.”

Given that, Bill Coors had a lifelong dedication to wellness.

He established the award-winning Bill Coors Wellness Center, one of the first employee wellness centers in the country, in 1981. A personal accomplishment includes summitting Mt. Kilimanjaro at age 58 in 1974 — earning him the recognition of being the oldest man to do so at that time, according to the company.

Coors served on a number of local boards, earning him such awards as Citizen of the West in 1992 and the Patriots Award presented by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

The press release notes that one of Bill Coors’ most treasured possessions was his Bösendorfer piano.

An experienced pianist, Bill Coors received a standing ovation from an audience of about 800 people following his performance during the University of Denver’s Founder’s Day celebration in 1998.

Although largely known for his work on the creation and development of the aluminum can, another one of Coors’ professional accomplishments worth noting is the launch of the company’s first isostatic insulator line.

Bill Coors was awarded the Energy Secretary’s Appreciation Award from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management on Dec. 2, 2016, for his role in providing the insulators to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. Bill Coors was born to Adolph Coors Jr. and May Coors on Aug. 11, 1916. He was born in Golden and grew up in a bungalow behind the Coors brewery. He attended primary school in Golden, but at age 13, he went to Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, where he spent four years. He then went to Princeton University and earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1938 and a graduate degree in 1939.

He moved back to Golden following graduation.

Bill Coors was married three times.

First to Geraldine Jackson, with whom he had four children. Then to Phyliss Mahaffey with whom he had a son. He married Rita Bass later in life. She died in 2015.

He is survived by three of his five children — Margaret Coors Beresford, May Louise Coors and Williams Scott Coors — seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a great number of nieces, nephews, greatnieces and great-nephews.

Jeffco provides playground, workforce for industry to thrive Outdoor companies represent a quarter of all new business prospects for county

Jefferson County is known as the Gateway to the Rockies.

This makes it a prime spot for outdoor industry businesses and companies to thrive.

“Jefferson County offers the quintessential Colorado experience,” said Kristi Pollard, the president and CEO of the Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation (Jeffco EDC). “With Jeffco’s commitment to the preservation of open space and the quintessential Colorado lifestyle, Jeffco is a 212,000-acre testing facility that is beckoning the outdoor industry to come.”

Nationally, the outdoor industry represents 7.6 million jobs and $52.9 billion in state and local revenues, Pollard said. Jeffco EDC’s website notes that each year in Colorado, the outdoor recreation industry generates 229,000 direct jobs and $2 billion in state and local tax revenue.

In Jeffco, the outdoor industry represents nearly a quarter of all business prospects considering the area, Pollard added.

New senior community coming to Lakewood, as Jeffco continues to age The Ridge Pinehurst expects to be completed by fall of 2019

Jefferson County is aging quickly, and as the population increases, so too does the demand for senior services in Lakewood. The U.S. Census Bureau says over 16 percent of the Jefferson County population is 65 years, or older. That number is only expected to increase as Baby Boomers continue to age.

In the midst by constructing The Ridge Pinehurst, a senior living community that is expected to be completed by the fall of 2019.

The Ridge Pinehurst will stretch over 18 acres at 7205 W. Quincy Ave., and it will contain 222 independent living apartment homes, 96 assisted living apartments and 42 memory care apartment homes. Its residents will get to live in style with amenities like indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, an indoor heated pool and Jacuzzi, a resistance pool, an art studio and theater room, a hair salon, dining venues and an on-site health and wellness center.

The developers donated a $150,000 check to nearby Havern School that serves children grades kindergarten through eighth grade. The school launched a campaign last year to complete renovations to the Denver Loretto Center, a place that served as both a residency for nuns and the

Havern School building. Now it, operates solely as a school, and Havern School is completing renovations to the building.

Lakewood Police encourage dropping off unused medications Drop off Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Looking to get rid of those unused pills and medications that have sat in the cabinet for months?

Now is the opportunity to do so as the Lakewood Police Department is preparing for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The day is meant to give residents a chance to

dispose of their prescription drugs in a safe, convenient and responsible way, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Residents are encouraged to bring any unused over-the-counter prescription medications to 445 S. Allison Parkway on Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The police department says it won’t accept needles, sharps, mercury thermometers, oxygen containers, pressurized canisters, illicit drugs and chemotherapy and radioactive substances.

The station, and its immediate area, has vast opportunities for outdoor recreational amenities including mountain biking, water sports, running and hiking trails and playgrounds.

All this is in addition to opportunities for private development with visibility from I-70 and “convenient access to regional employment hubs and Denver International Airport” states city documents.

It’s a vision plan, Art added, but “nothing is set in stone.”

Yeti Cycles, a Golden-based mountain bike manufacturer, also has a vision for Jeffco — an outdoor lifestyle campus.

Along with relocating its headquarters, “we hope to bring other like-minded companies to the campus,” said Yeti Cycles’ president and owner Chris Conroy, “and provide an environment that is focused on the outdoors.”

The location is an approximate 40acre plot of land in unincorporated Jefferson County on the west side of Highway 93, about five minutes north of downtown Golden. It took the company about five years to find the right parcel of land, Conroy added.

Pollard agrees.

“As businesses look for locations to operate, they take into account a number of factors like the cost of doing business, workforce and transportation,” she said. But, “they also look at the health of the community and opportunities for work-life balance. Jefferson County offers the best of both worlds. Employers understand that a happy, healthy employee will produce more, ultimately contributing to the overall success of the company.”

It should be noted that overall, Colorado is an active state, Art said.

“Colorado is a place where people want to try all the sports,” he said.

These activities include skiing and snowboarding in the winter, kayaking and rafting in the summer and hiking, biking and fishing that one can enjoy all year round, Art said.

And Jeffco, in particular, has a plethora of these outdoor activities that residents and visitors can enjoy, Pollard said. This means the county can attract diverse types of businesses within the outdoor industry — apparel and gear for snow and water sports, hiking and bouldering and everything in between, she said.

“Jeffco has the playground, workforce and business environment to support them all,” Pollard said.

VOICES It’s time to do our part for our Jeffco schools

I

n August, just before the start of school, leaks in the roof at Green Mountain High School in Lakewood saturated the gym floor to the point that gymnastics and volleyball events had to be canceled.

Because most buildings in Jefferson County Public Schools were built about 50 years ago, they do not meet the security requirements necessary for keeping students safe today.

Higher salaries in nearby districts are continually drawing away quality teachers, making Jeffco more of a training ground than a place to live out a career.

OUR VIEW Jeffco Public Schools, many parents and educators say, is at a crisis point: It needs money to repair and renovate aging buildings so that all students enjoy an optimum learning environment. To graduate young people with not only college-ready skills, but also the vocational and technical abilities that businesses are demanding. And to recruit and — most importantly — retain the quality teachers needed to maintain and grow the district’s excellence in education.

We agree.

Toward that end, Colorado Community Media urges Jefferson County voters to support Ballot Question 5A, a $33 million mill levy override, and Ballot Question 5B, a $567 million bond.

The override will help raise teacher salaries and provide more mental health and counseling positions, among other improvements. The bond — which also provides money for charter schools — will pay for renovations and repairs, build new facilities to meet population growth, upgrade security measures, and expand career and technical and early childhood education.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thank you Mayor Adam Paul I saw recently that Mayor Adam Paul came out against Proposition 112, and for that I say thank you. Proposition 112, the measure that would increase drilling setbacks from the existing 500 or 1,000 feet to nearly half a mile, would have far-reaching ramifications for the entire state, which includes Lakewood. How so?

How about education funding? The oil and gas industry is responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars that go to K-12 funding. With education funding already stretched as thin as it will go, what’s the plan for making up this delta if we kick the industry out of the state? Because that’s exactly what Proposition 112 would do. It would make 85 percent of the state unavailable for new drilling, and if you take away 85% of the available inventory for any industry, they’re going to cease to exist in any real way.

Further, the industry accounts for more than 100,000 jobs in Colorado. With new drilling off-limits, what happens to those people? Mind you, that’s not just oil and gas jobs. That’s people who work tangentially in the industry in construction, truck driving, and service industries that depend on the money spent by oil and gas employees or who are in the supply chain.

I’m happy our Mayor recognizes the danger in this measure, and I hope you’ll join us in voting down this insipid proposition.

A couple weeks ago I described the Rockies offense as almost as listless as the Stapleton campaign — I might have been selling the Rockies short.

And we all know what happened to them.

Another interesting aspect of this campaign is the amount of money that is being spent on state House and Senate races already. With the exception of the one year that Polis’ “Gang of Four” surprised everybody and bought all of Colorado government in 2004, I do not remember another year that has featured so much media for state seats. Somebody has a lot of money, and they want the Capitol real bad.

By the way, does Ed Perlmutter have an opponent for re-election? Just asking … For a friend.

But what may be the greatest curiosity of this election is the silence coming from some quarters. We all know that there are three huge education proposals on the ballot this time around: Amendment 73 to raise $1.6 billion statewide; 5A to raise about $33 million in mill override for Jeffco Schools; and 5B to allow the school district to add $567 million in debt

to fund building projects across the district.

The curiosity is just how quiet the campaign for these issues has been. Perhaps, after the full-court press that was unsuccessful two years ago, the strategic minds in charge thought a “stealth campaign” might be more effective. Or, perhaps, they’re saving their ammunition for a late blitz, knowing that the source of their campaign funds would remain secret until after the actual election, like how the “grassroots” campaign to recall board members in 2015 was revealed the December after to have received over a quartermillion dollars from state and national unions, more than 90 percent of its campaign funding. But, given that the Denver Post and the Colorado Women’s Alliance have both come out against 73, it is curious that there has not been a high-profile move in support of these issues.

And if that all sounded like a pregame rundown, that was deliberate.

Watch politics as sport — it’s more fun. And, probably, more interesting than watching the Broncos right now.

But “we’re not asking for that,” Superintendent Jason Glass said.

“We want to create equity in older buildings … increase the quality of pre-1980 high schools.”

Research has shown that older buildings tend to negatively affect enrollment and quality of work, Glass said. The learning environment also has changed, requiring flexible spaces and setups that allow students to work collectively and hands-on.

And there’s no doubt Jeffco teachers lag behind their counterparts in salaries. Statewide data shows four of the six neighboring districts pay their teachers more, reducing the district’s ability to keep its best teachers.

“Right now, it appears that we are a training ground for our educators who can go to any other district around us and make $5,000 to $15,000

more per year,” board member Ali Lasell has said.

We applaud the district’s commitment to transparency: A citizens financial oversight committee and independent audit of expenditures will make sure money from the measures is spent as intended.

We also commend the district for listening to criticism from its failed bond attempt in 2016, which cited a lack of clarity in how the money would be used. This time, the district has prepared a detailed booklet and website of exactly where the money will go at each school.

As the state’s second-largest school district — with 86,000 students from across 770 square miles on 168 campuses — Jeffco schools must work to respond to a diverse mix of urban, suburban and mountain communities.

“What we’ve tried to do here is create something that benefits everybody,” Glass said. “We have an obligation to pay it forward for future generations.”

It’s time to do our part.

Over $147.6 billion in personal income would be lost. Over $9 billion in state and local tax revenue would be lost, with that amounting to a loss of more than $1 billion annually by 2030.

Increasing setbacks to 2,500 feet seems reasonable until you look at these numbers. When you increase the setbacks this drastically, drilling in Colorado becomes virtually impossible. Proposition 112 devastates the local oil and gas industry, but the ripple effect to other sectors of the economy is significant. A majority of the economic devastation detailed above negatively impacts nearly every sector of the state’s economy, including employees and small businesses who call Lakewood their home.

I encourage everyone to please say no to this extreme proposition and vote NO on 112.

Robert Lee, Lakewood Arvada Fire needs a statewide fix Those who have read AFPD’s argument for the tax increase (sorry, request to “stabilize revenue”) could be forgiven for concluding that the most recent state residential assessment rate change resulted in a cut of actual revenue to the Fire District.

That’s simply not the case.

The drop, from 7.96 percent to 7.2 percent, did cut the amount of taxes

that would have been paid on residential property in 2018 by nearly 10 percent. However, the actual change in dollars to be collected by the county for AFPD from calendar 2017 to calendar 2018 was an increase of roughly 16.3 percent. In other words, AFPD talks about the “cuts” due to the drop in the residential assessment rates, yet AFPD’s tax levy for calendar 2018 rose by about $3.6 million dollars for the year (see www.jeffco.us/446/ Abstract-of-Assessments).

This is not to say that the future of AFPD funding isn’t a cause for concern, and I do not claim that current Colorado’s property tax system is coherent or really defensible. The state legislature is guilty of gross negligence in repeatedly kicking the reform can down the road. That said, this is not an issue that AFPD electors can or should try to fix through extraconstitutional means, and nobody should consider the ballot question under the impression that a $3.6 million increase is in any way a “cut” in revenue for vital services.

I did some research and found Jeffco spending is already up over $1,000 per student in the last six years and yet entry level salaries for new teachers has not increased significantly. So where is all that new money going?

Jeffco’s has increased the number of administrators despite having less students and fewer teachers in district runs schools. And just this month the superintendent hired a second Communications Director with a salary over $100,000. Jeffco could have hired two teachers with that money versus a PR person.

Betting on Brauchler I have some significant difference of opinion with George Brauchler, specifically in regard to Red Flag laws.

But when I consider everything else, George Brauchler is the clear choice to be our state’s next AG. He is the only candidate with significant experience practicing law here in Colorado IN the courtroom. Litigation is a substantial portion of what happens in the AG office and George has decades of experience in that arena.

Courtroom litigation experience is absolutely critical for the office upon which we all depend to defend our state’s water and other natural resources.

And I like his proven leadership skills as evidenced by his high rank (Army Colonel) within the Military Justice system.

All things considered, George Brauchler is really the only good choice to represent us as our Attorney General.

Steve Dorman, Lakewood Teacher for Amendment 73 As a Jeffco teacher of 38 years, I have had the pleasure of teaching students the wonderfully complicated stories of America’s history. One complication has been when school funding has not kept pace with the

demands and expectations of education in the 21st century.

Colorado schools were decimated during the recession and lost more than $7 billion in funding. Amendment 73 would restore school funding to pre-recession levels and move Colorado closer to the national average. Students need for investment is now!

Colorado’s teacher salaries have not kept pace with the cost of living; Wyoming, ($58,650) and Nebraska ($52,338) pay higher salaries. The average teacher salary is less than it was 30 years ago in today’s dollars and Colorado teachers earn 21 percent less than they did in 1990 (adjusted for inflation) – the largest drop of any state.

Colorado’s economy is booming.

According to the Denver Business Journal, Colorado’s economy ranks number one overall; this represents a real opportunity to restore the funding to public schools. Amendment 73 will bring $134.4 million to Jeffco Public Schools and would go a long way toward restoring the $694.6 million in cuts to Jeffco schools over the past decade. It will also provide equitable funding for all school districts.

Passing Amendment 73 is a powerful investment in a prepared workforce, healthy communities and a vibrant Colorado economy. Voters have the power to keep great schools moving forward to help all students in Colorado reach their full potential. Vote YES on Amendment 73.

Questions about 5B Are we correct about the investor rule-of-thumb that says, “vote NO” on a public agency’s bond request, if it’s not for capital improvements? Isn’t true that taxpayers should heed the same warning?

The pie-chart in Jeffco School Board’s glossy ballot info brochure shows only 10 percent as identifiable capital projects, and 90 percent that could, or not, be partially for capital items.

Couldn’t the 60 percent slice “Bringing all schools & classrooms to quality standard....” mean almost anything? How much of the upgrading need is a result of failure to maintain under the operations budget?

No capital expense is justified for the valueless early childhood education program. We already pay for K-12.

Vote “NO” Tom Graham, Arvada Time for a change with the Clerk and Recorder We need a change in Jeffco. The current Clerk and Recorder has held one elected office or another for 20 years. But twice she’s quit on us to seek another county office. That way her Republican party bosses can fill her office through a Vacancy Committee, while supporting her run for a different office. Fortunately we have a choice in Jeffco. George Stern. Those of us who’ve met him, who’ve heard him speak about his vision for that office,

Imagine being welcomed as a customer at DMV. Or not even having to go to a Jeffco DMV office to get services we need. I think we’ll get a real bang for our buck with George Stern. And he’ll answer to us, the Jeffco people who elect him.

ew holidays afford the creativity of Halloween — Christmas has its trees and presents, Independence Day has its explosives, but Halloween is celebrated many ways.

Far transmuted from its murky Celtic roots, Halloween in the Denver area runs the gamut from costume parties and balls to haunted houses and a variety of trick-or-treating options for youngsters.

Playing dress-up October is an exciting time at Disguises, a sprawling costume shop on West Colfax Avenue in Lakewood.

“We’re here year-round, but the place really comes to life leading up to Halloween,” said Tess Heinonen, who’s worked for Disguises for six years.

Superheroes are big this year, Heinonen said.

“Black Panther is still popular,” Heinonen said. “The Avengers, too. So are villains like the Joker and Harley Quinn — that’s a fun couples’ costume.”

The gut-buster outfit this year is a big floppy T-rex, Heinonen said.

“It’s pretty much impossible not to laugh when somebody’s wearing one,” she said.

Disguises also offers professional makeup consulting for those who want to take their costume up an extra notch.

“We can turn you into lots of the creepy stuff you see in TV and movies,” said David Caballero, Disguise’s artistic director, who’s been doing theatrical makeup for three decades. “If you bring in a picture, we’ll figure out how to do it.”

n the movies that were churned out during Hollywood’s classic era in the 1930s, journalists mainly handled stress with a bottle of bourbon in their desks and an unending string of half-lit cigarettes.

COMING Luckily, there ATTRACTIONS are healthier ways to deal with stress these days — as former Denver Post employee and longtime banjo player Barry Osborne can attest.

“I was the home page editor, so it required I stayed Clarke Reader on top of breaking news, and you had to balance the interests of all the different desks and editors and drive up page views,” Osborne said. “It was a great job, but very stressful. I turned to music to destress. I started taking banjo lessons at Swallow Hill — where I now work — and got my technique down.”

Osborne recently released his debut EP “Back of the Title Page” — the culmination of years of tinkering with songs and lyrics going as far back as college.

At the time, he played bass; it wasn’t until after college that he took up the banjo.

“I loved the sound, and I sort of loved that some people dislike the banjo,” he said. “I like instruments — and other things — that never completely fit in.”

After honing his skills at Denver’s Swallow Hill, an organization that connects people to music through learning, performances and more, Osborne started putting his recent experiences to melodies.

“I was inspired by getting older.

I’m in my early 40s, which I don’t consider old or anything, but I’ve gained some perspective on life,” he explained. “I name-check some friends I’ve known since high school that have stayed creative in music, literature and activism.

“They stayed creative and passionate in their endeavors, and I take inspiration from that. I want to be like them — creative and willing to reinvent myself and be passionate about it.”

Recorded in the homes of Osborne and engineer, producer and mixer Brian Nelson, “Back of the Title Page” is a warm and personal album that deepens the more time listeners spends with it.

I’ve led businesses, started schools and served as an elected official, and

in each situation, I’ve found the most important thing is to respect the people who work for and with you — by building a culture where people feel comfortable bringing up good ideas, and where everyone feels their contributions are valued.

What must be done to improve Colorado’s K-12 education system?

It’s time for us to stop just talking about investing in our kids and actually start doing it. We need to raise teacher pay, end the teacher shortage and provide our schools with the resources they need to provide every child with a great education. My plan also calls for bringing free, full-day preschool and kindergarten to every family, so that each child in Colorado gets off to a strong start.

What must be done to ensure the state’s transportation system can meet the demands of a growing population?

Colorado drivers are being forced to pay an average of nearly $300 per year in car repairs.

An overview of Colorado Department of Education data reveals from 2011 to 2017, student population grew by 6.3 percent, teachers grew by 8.1 percent, and administrators grew by 34.6 percent. As governor, I will make sure we are using our education dollars to pay our teachers and get more money into classrooms to help students succeed. We need to increase transparency in the budgeting process and direct dollars to the teachers and the classrooms, not outof-control administrative costs.

What must be done to ensure the state’s transportation system can meet the demands of a growing population?

As governor, I will demand results from the Department of Transportation (CDOT).

What are the most important duties of the attorney general?

Experience and commitment to Colorado. I am a Colorado kid from middle-class Lakewood who has practiced Colorado law for nearly one quarter-century as a prosecutor, criminal defense attorney, plaintiff ’s and civil defense counsel, military prosecutor and defense attorney, Chief of Military Justice (northern Iraq), and I’ve tried cases in municipal, state, federal and military courts. I handled the felony cases from the Columbine massacre and led the successful prosecution of the Aurora theater shooter.

The attorney general represents all of Colorado government, except for the Legislature. A good AG works vigorously to keep our communities safe. The AG is a defender of Coloradans by enforcing our laws without regard to ideology or political agenda. The AG is a protector of Colorado, its natural resources, environment and its precious water. The AG is a guardian of our constitutional rights and the rule of law. That has been my entire career.

It’s time for fresh leadership and new ideas in the Secretary of State’s Office. I am the only candidate who can vow that my undivided attention will go to ensuring that Colorado has the securest elections and the most transparent government in the nation. I will make elections more accessible and secure, champion transparency and work to stop dark money in Colorado campaigns.

Collaborative. It’s critical to get expert advice from government and the private sector. Colorado was targeted by a Russian cyberattack in 2016. Colorado’s statewide voter system went down in 2016, causing two- to three-hour delays. We have great cyber and IT resources in Colorado in the private sector. As SOS, I am going to work with the top minds in government and private-sector cyber experts to ensure that we are ready for 21st century challenges.

Under my leadership, it’s easier than ever before to register, and Colorado leads the nation in voter registration. I am the only candidate who has experience registering businesses and charities. Since taking office, Colorado has added over 100,000 businesses, thanks partially to an inexpensive and easy process available to Coloradans to start new businesses.

I am the only candidate that understands that there is nothing political about running clean elections and making it easy for Coloradans to start new businesses. My re-election is being supported by election officials across the political spectrum. Among them are county clerk and recorders that include Republicans, unaffiliated clerks and many of the Democrats. I have earned their support because they know that I’m a principled leader who believes in transparency and accountability.

My core principles are built around people-driven solutions, stewardship and fiscal responsibility. I have dedicated my life to building bridges and finding solutions to complex problems — the types of problems that our next state treasurer will face on day one. I am the only candidate for state treasurer who has worked in the private sector serving in a fiduciary role, making me uniquely qualified for this important office.

As one of my campaign pledges, I will not take a salary from the government for serving as Colorado’s treasurer, as I want to truly serve you and set a precedent from day one of saving every tax dollar possible. My goal is always to bring people together to solve problems. Our state needs a treasurer willing to make hard decisions and find innovative solutions to problems, and I will work tirelessly on your behalf.

As a teacher and a legislator on the Joint Budget Committee, I’ve had a front-row seat into the most pressing financial issues facing our state. I know that our schools are underfunded and that our roads and bridges need to be repaired. I’m a pragmatic problem solver. For years, I have written and balanced our state’s $30 billion budget in a way that improves lives across Colorado.

What policy changes would you implement?

If elected, what will your top priority be in January?

I will be an attorney general for all of Colorado. I intend to decentralize the AG’s office by creating regional offices in the parts of Colorado with fewer resources to tackle some of the biggest issues affecting community safety, such as the opioid crisis, burgeoning meth epidemic, environmental crimes and the expanding black-market marijuana grows throughout Colorado. I will expand statewide the attack on human trafficking I have led as DA in our community.

Yes. Defending Colorado from federal overreach, regardless of who occupies the White House, is an obligation of the AG. Coloradans know best how to govern ourselves, not bureaucrats 1,500 miles away. I will defend our constitution and laws, whether I agree with them or not. As a father of four great kids in public schools, I’m committed to continuing the fight against violators of our marijuana laws who put our children and communities at risk.

I will protect our families and defend our state by enforcing our laws and actively serving as a check against an overreaching federal government and a state government that exceeds its lawful authority in governing Colorado.

Whatever partisan path there is to election, as AG, I will not be an AG for any party or ideology. I will be an AG for all of Colorado and all Coloradans. More Colorado, less Washington, D.C.

The AG is well positioned to lead on a number of important policy areas, like addressing the opioid epidemic by treating it as a public health crisis and managing our water when there is less of it — and more demands for it — on account of climate change. I will also work to advance fair and sensible reforms to our criminal justice system, with incarceration alternatives for those who are not a threat to public safety.

Yes. As attorney general, I will protect our state’s sovereignty against federal overreach and ensure that Colorado maintains the right to decide how we legislate and manage marijuana. I will work with law enforcement officers across the state to ensure that the expected benefits of legalized marijuana are experienced to the fullest extent, and I will defend the rights of counties to decide how they manage marijuana within their jurisdiction.

Fair treatment and opportunity for all Coloradans is the heart of my vision. To achieve this, it is imperative to address the opioid epidemic and take on irresponsible drug companies who lied to people, made huge profits and now must be held accountable. Once we win this case, we will use the funds from this settlement to spur the development of drug treatment across Colorado, providing an important alternative to putting drug users in jail.

If elected, what will your top priority be in January?

The Colorado secretary of state oversees our elections, campaign finance and business registration, among other duties. The secretary of state is critical to making sure that Colorado has safe and secure elections and that eligible voters are able to vote.

In 2016, our election system went down, causing two- to three-hour delays. I will work to ensure that this does not happen again. We also received a B ranking in cybersecurity and must take immediate steps to ensure our elections are safe against Russian cyberattacks. It’s critical that we improve our elections so that every eligible Coloradan can have their voice heard.

I am running for secretary of state because I believe that every eligible Coloradan, Democrat, Republican or unaffiliated, should have their voice heard. That’s why I plan to expand automatic voter registration. I will stop secret political spending in Colorado elections and make the Secretary of State’s Office into a business resource center for first-time business owners and entrepreneurs.

I’ve worked hand-in-hand with county clerks to rapidly and safely modernize Colorado’s ability to conduct and oversee elections of all sizes, recently directing the statewide implementation of new voting systems. I’ve placed a great deal of emphasis on election integrity and, in 2017, oversaw Colorado’s first ever statewide risk-limiting audit, designed to catch election errors. It’s no surprise that the Washington Post recently called Colorado “the safest state to cast a vote.”

Under my leadership, Colorado has become a national model of excellence for innovation and cybersecurity. In 2016, when Russian hackers attempted to interfere with U.S. elections, Colorado was ready because, “The state invested in security when the only reward was public trust, not national interests.” Thanks to our recently implemented risk-limiting audit, we can safely say that no votes were changed by foreign actors. But, as cyber threats evolve, we must continue to be ready.

My top priority will be to maintain the standing of the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office as a national model of innovation, fairness, transparency and excellence. Under my leadership, Colorado has won seven national awards in the areas of innovation and cybersecurity, and my expectation is that we will continue to increase our national standing in my next four years as secretary of state.

What are the most important duties of the state treasurer?

What policy changes would you implement?

If elected, what will your top priority be in January?

Being a steward of every taxpayer dollar is paramount. This includes investing taxpayer dollars responsibly and making our state government more transparent and accountable. Serving on the PERA (Public Employees’ Retirement Association) board is the greatest challenge for the state treasurer. The $32 billion unfunded liability our state faces is unsustainable, but the state treasurer must be peopledriven in order to find a solution that works for both our public employees and the taxpayers. This task is priority number one.

The treasurer’s office is responsible for managing the Great Colorado Payback, a program that seeks to reunite over $600 million in cash and assets to their rightful owners. I would reform this program to become more proactive in finding the lawful owner of this cash and property. I would also urge the General Assembly to reinstate a moratorium on unclaimed property that would block the state from appropriating the property for its own use.

My first goal will be to reach out personally to each board member of PERA and meet with them — something that no state treasurer has done before. We must create relationships and build bridges to have the conversations necessary to address this enormous challenge. I will also look at our state’s investments and find opportunities for greater return and more realistic expectations so that we do not face further shortfalls in PERA.

The most important thing a treasurer can do is ensure our state’s public dollars are invested safely, transparently and productively. The treasurer is a voting member of the PERA (Public Employees’ Retirement Association) board and can play an active role in restoring PERA to solvency. PERA is Colorado’s pension plan for public employees, and it’s severely underfunded. Finally, the treasurer oversees the Great Colorado Payback program and the Unclaimed Property Trust Fund.

As treasurer, I will work to make sure our public dollars are invested here in Colorado. I will work with the PERA board, the Legislature and governor to restore PERA to solvency in a way that doesn’t leave our seniors out in the cold during retirement. I will solve issues plaguing the Great Colorado Payback program. Right now, the process for people to get their property back from the treasurer’s office is too bureaucratic.

Putting PERA on a sustainable pathway while protecting the defined-benefit plan is my top priority for January. We need to make sure our seniors are not left out in the cold during retirement. In fact, making sure that all citizens in Colorado are planning well for retirement, and saving effectively for their family’s post-secondary education needs, is vitally important. As treasurer, I’ll make sure government works for all of Colorado.

How would choosing you for this office improve the lives of residents of the district?

I’ve made it a priority to fight for expanding health care access, securing funding for medical research, and supporting medical professionals and patient protections. I’m a leading voice on environmental issues in Congress and am working to protect both Colorado’s public lands and our global environment. I’m a strong proponent of women’s reproductive rights. Constituents can count on my continued dedication to these efforts and more if they honor me with re-election this fall.

What should Congress do to address the nation’s opioid epidemic?

We need to understand the role of drug manufacturers and others in bringing the opioid epidemic to the point where it claims 115 Americans’ lives daily. For more than a year, the Energy and Commerce Committee on which I serve has been investigating how issues with the controlled-substances supply chain in this country may have contributed to the epidemic.

Additionally, we need to ensure that the federal fight against opioid addiction is sufficiently funded.

» I’m not of the swamp in any way. I feel called to run for this office, and it is not my life’s goal to live in Washington, D.C. Residents of this district will see me a great deal more than the current incumbent. It’s called servant leadership. My goal is to empower and enhance the lives of the people in the district. A secondary goal is to end the absentee reign of the incumbent.

How would choosing you for this office improve the lives of residents of the district?

My constituents would have an independent voice representing them — someone who is willing to challenge both parties when they’re wrong. They would have someone who deeply understands the district, having grown up in the district and started a small business here. I understand the challenges of the rapidly rising cost of living, which is why I authored legislation that would allow families to save money, tax-free, for the down payment on their first home.

Congress should repeal all laws banning cannabis. As former NFL player, Eugene Monroe said his “pain is never going away. My body is damaged. I must manage it somehow.

Managing it with pills was slowly killing me. Now, I’m able to function and be extremely efficient by figuring out how to use different formulations of cannabis.” Cannabis is a non-addictive alternative to highly addictive opioids. End the ban. The opioid addiction problem is severely reduced.

What should Congress do to address the nation’s opioid epidemic?

We need to crack down on the over-prescription of addictive pain medication, better support people suffering from opioid addiction through expanding opportunities for substanceabuse treatment and improve monitoring of those with access to these drugs. I have voted for and authored bills that take on the opioid epidemic with both Democrats and Republicans.

This is a problem that cannot be fixed in a partisan manner — we need to work together to combat the issue.

Coloradans deserve a fighter who puts people over politics and country over party. Our current representation has failed to deliver on its most fundamental promises — from reforming our immigration system to expanding access to quality and affordable health care. I’ll bring servant leadership back to Washington and never forget to put Coloradans first.

The opioid epidemic is the worst drug-overdose crisis in American history. The number of opioid-related overdoses rose by nearly 28 percent between 2015 and 2016. The Trump administration and its Republicans allies in Congress have simply been too slow to respond. I’ll commit to partnering with local communities to solve this crisis with all the best practices we can find at the national level. Some communities have made real headway here — it should be the federal government’s job to provide the resources and the expertise Colorado needs to make a difference.

What should Congress do to address the nation’s opioid epidemic?

I have the drive, determination and passion to break things loose in Washington. I’ll work with fellow Representatives to break the log jam in a bipartisan way and start getting things done. I will focus on that not working to please party bosses. I will work to make sure our residents have access to affordable health care and make tax cuts permanent. I will help balance the budget so our children aren’t burdened with debt.

Congress should support states efforts to curb the opioid crisis but do so with caution so those who need opioids have access.

When my mom was diagnosed with cancer the drugs she was prescribed made her last months tolerable. It gave us quality time to enjoy being with mom as a family. So we shouldn’t go overboard on restricting opioid use. Congress can require more education when opioids are prescribed so patients know the risks.

Since I was elected I have never lost sight of the number one reason why I do this job: to help the hard-working folks of the 7th Congressional District. I help improve the lives of Coloradans by focusing on our infrastructure needs, ensuring access to affordable health care, and supporting public education, public lands, and a strong economy with good-paying jobs with opportunities to pursue the training and skills needed to get those jobs.

The first priority is to deliver the much-needed funding and resources for communities fighting this deadly epidemic. There is no one size fits all solution, but we must work to both treat those suffering from this illness and also address the root causes of this epidemic. I voted for the SUPPORT Patients and Communities Act, the Overdose Prevention and Patient Safety Act, and the INTERDICT Act to take meaningful steps to combating the opioid epidemic.

What is your position on immigration reform?

What are two other issues that demand attention from Congress, and why?

There are many ways in which our nation’s immigration system is broken. Congress must come to a consensus on what needs repairing, and how. From the disgrace of the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy of separating refugee families at the border to the ongoing heartbreak of Dreamers in our communities who just want to remain in the only country they’ve ever known, there is much that needs fixing. As a nation, we are better than this.

After wasting nearly a year on trying to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, the current Republican majority in Congress has finally come to realize that there must be a better way. GOP colleagues have approached me to say they’d like to work on bipartisan solutions. We need to find common ground on matters of mutual concern affecting all our constituents, such as the high cost of health care — especially prescription drugs.

Climate change is the moral imperative of our generation.

Protecting our environment is a top priority. It is also important that Congress stand up for the safety of our citizens and school children. It is time we say “no” to the powerful lobby and “yes” to sensible gun-safety legislation.

Build a wall with border enforcement that regulates trans-border traffic while making it easier for legal immigration — protecting our Colorado citizens. Violations for visa overstays must have greater penalties. Guest-worker penalties should include revocation of legal status, a mandatory return to the home country of the violator and the prohibition of re-entry. Legislation with teeth that increases the penalties for both the illegal immigrant and any company employing illegal immigrants.

Get the government out of health care. We need to reduce government regulations and get out of the way of the doctors and researchers to the greatest extent possible. In effect, the solution is the exact opposite of what President Obama proposed in almost every way. For example, let health insurance be sold across state lines. Let customers be rewarded for finding lower costs with HSAs, preventive care, alternative care to include, chiropractic care, massage, acupuncture.

Two of the biggest issues are cronyism (campaign finance) and corruption. Congressional members and members of the Cabinet must have bans on their working for lobbyists or lobbying themselves for a period equal to the length of their elected or appointed office. Financial disclosures upon election must be compared to financial disclosures at the end of service and the difference, if greater, must be explained under oath. “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” — Lord Acton

What is your position on immigration reform?

What can be done to improve the nation’s health care system?

What are two other issues that demand attention from Congress, and why?

I believe we need to fix our broken immigration system in a manner that keeps families together, secures our borders and strengthens our economy. I have worked across the aisle to author legislation that would give the young people who were brought to this country illegally as kids, through no fault of their own, a path to citizenship. We need immigration laws that are both humane and enforced.

First and foremost, we must preserve protections for those with pre-existing conditions. That is why I voted against the health care bill last year — because it didn’t include those necessary protections. We must reduce the cost of defensive medicine by ending the giveaways to the trial lawyers lobby.

We also need to stabilize the individual insurance market, which has seen unaffordable and annual increases ever since Obamacare was passed.

President Trump has proposed a new Space Force, which would mean billions in new Pentagon bureaucracy. As a longtime opponent of wasteful spending at the Pentagon, I plan on fighting it, as I believe it space operations are best dealt with by the Air Force, and not another level of bureaucracy. We also need to deal with our ballooning deficits and national debt. We can’t keep putting more and more debt on future generations.

The current leadership in Washington has failed to get it done — despite enjoying complete control of Congress and the White House. My policies will focus on a few key elements: smart border control that upholds our laws and protects American interests, legal immigration reform, protection and a path to citizenship for those who came to America as children, keeping families together, and a clear path to citizenship for those who want to follow the law and contribute to our community.

This administration’s efforts to gut the Affordable Care Act are immoral and unproductive. Health care is a right, not a privilege. That means all our efforts should be dedicated toward expanding coverage to every American — not kicking them off their current coverage. We can start by allowing the government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies and introducing a federal public option into the marketplace. Plans like Medicare X will also make immediate progress by reducing costs and ensuring quality coverage.

Our campaign finance system is in desperate need of reform. I’ve challenged my opponent to join me in refusing to take any corporate PAC money. That money makes our politicians more accountable to big business than to the people they represent. I will also vigorously oppose any effort to privatize the VA. Our government has an obligation to care for the veterans it sends to war on its behalf, and that means keeping their care out of the hands of profitseeking companies that don’t have their best interests at heart.

What are two other issues that demand attention from Congress, and why?

We need comprehensive immigration reform to protect our citizens and ensure criminals aren’t coming to our country.

We need to enforce our laws so those legally waiting in other countries have a fair opportunity to come to our country. We also need to treat those new to our country fairly and with compassion. Most of us are immigrants to this country; we need to treat others with the respect we would want for our ancestors.

Like many families, we experienced an increase in our insurance premium and our annual deductible. For one trip to the hospital for stitches for our son we received a bill for $4000.

To improve our health care system we need to manage the profits of hospitals lowering costs and we need insurance companies to be able to compete across state lines so insurance costs decrease.

Two issues needing attention are controlling our escalating national debt and fixing crumbling infrastructure. We need to reduce our national debt and balance the federal budget so our children aren’t responsible for paying the bills we rack up. We need to spend only the money the government brings in every year. And we need to invest in our roads and bridges to be sure we have the infrastructure to support commerce and protect our country.

I strongly support comprehensive immigration reform and believe we need to establish a path to citizenship for people who have not committed any crimes, pay taxes, and are learning English. This includes securing our borders with new technologies, cracking down on organized crime and human trafficking, and streamlining and modernizing the visa process. We must also allow young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children to remain here legally.

The Affordable Care Act has helped millions of Americans and thousands of Coloradans gain access to quality healthcare coverage and protecting individuals with pre-existing conditions. I will work with anyone to improve the ACA and I will continue to fight against attempts to repeal or replace it. I believe we must demand transparency in healthcare prices by requiring public disclosure for every healthcare product, service and procedure so patients can make informed decisions about their healthcare.

Here in Colorado and in many places across the country, we must make sure local infrastructure can keep up with growth and be sustainable for generations to come.

Instead of massive tax cuts for those at the top, we need to fix our roads, bridges, electrical grids, broadband, and water infrastructure. In addition, I believe Congress should pass common sense gun reforms like universal background checks, banning bump stocks, limiting assault weapons, and allowing law enforcement the discretion to intervene if red flags appear warning of impending gun violence. Too many families in Colorado and across the country have been impacted by senseless and preventable gun violence.

Get to know the state ballot measures Voters in November will rule on 13 state-level issues

Colorado voters will decide on 13 state-level measures, addressing big issues like education and road funding, oil and gas setbacks, and congressional redistricting.

The measures are of three types: numbered amendments begin as citizen initiatives, and would be added to the Colorado Constitution. They cannot be altered without another popular vote.

Numbered propositions also begin as citizen initiatives, but if approved become state law, not constitutional amendments.

Lettered amendments are created in the state Legislature and referred to voters for approval.

Amendment 73: school funding Among the more high-profile measures on this year’s ballot, Amend-

ment 73 aims to create new revenue for public education by instituting a complex graduated income tax increase on individuals earning more than $150,000 a year, and increasing the corporate income tax rate from 4.63 percent to 6.0 percent. The measure would also fix residential property tax rates at 7.0 percent, preventing them from falling further due to the Gallagher Amendment.

Proponents say the measure would generate $1.6 billion per year for public education in Colorado, which has seen reductions totaling $7.2 billion since 2010. Colorado’s schools suffer from underfunding, proponents say, leading to inadequate special education and mental health counseling, as well as increasing class sizes and other detrimental outcomes.

Opponents say tax revenue is increasing without tax rate increases, and the measure does not guarantee improved student performance. Tax increases are burdensome on individuals and businesses, they argue, and the measure’s income tax brackets won’t be adjusted for inflation, thus pushing more earners into the brack-

ets over time.

Amendment 74: compensation for property devaluation Though Colorado law already requires government to compensate property owners if their actions totally devalue private property, such as through eminent domain or by enacting regulations that bar construction, Amendment 74 would allow property owners to petition the state for reimbursement of lost partial value of a property due to new laws or regulations, for example if government limited natural gas development on private property, an owner could sue for reduced mineral rights value.

Proponents say the law would help protect real estate, which is the most significant asset many people own.

Opponents say the measure could have unintended consequences, and make governments gun-shy about making decisions beneficial to the state’s environmental health.

Amendment 75: campaign contributions Seeking to level the playing field in state-level elections, Amendment

How would choosing you for this office improve the lives of residents of the district?

Our large and diverse district needs a problem-solver, not a politician, and solving problems starts with compassion, cooperation and listening to what people actually want: Coloradans throughout our district have urged me to fight Washington corruption, secure affordable healthcare, create a fairer economy and bring good jobs to our state, improve our school system, strengthen our trade deals and protect our Colorado way of life. That’s exactly what I’ll work hard to do in Congress.

75 would allow political donors to increase their campaign contributions to candidates to five times the current limits if one or more of the other candidates in the race contributes $1 million or more of their personal funds to the campaign.

Proponents say the measure would reduce the unfair advantages enjoyed by wealthy candidates in political races, and give a better shot to smallfry candidates seeking to get their message out.

Opponents say the measure only increases the money in state politics, thus sending campaign expenditures ever higher.

Proposition 109: bonds for highway projects Previously called the “Fix Our Damn Roads” initiative, Proposition 109 directs the state to borrow up to $3.5 billion to address up to 66 different road and bridge projects around the state. The funds would be raised through bond sales with a total repayment of up to $5.2 billion.

What should Congress do to address the nation’s opioid epidemic?

Congress should improve access to appropriate medical treatment to help people recover from addiction; create a stronger nationwide Prescription Drug Monitoring Program with better training for medical professionals, and fight the factors that lead to addiction such as pain, poverty and depression.

We also need to hold drug manufacturers accountable for misleading patients. I support ongoing funding to Medicaid to help people recover, but my opponent’s plan to cut Medicaid would only worsen this crisis.

Why are you seeking this office?

I was the first in my family to have the opportunity to go to a university thanks to the Presidents Leadership Scholarship offered by CU and Colorado business and civic leaders. This opportunity not only built the foundation for my career but my entire life. After enjoying a successful career I wanted to give back to my university and the state I grew up in, I want to insure every qualified student has the same opportunities I had.

What makes you the best choice for this office?

For the past 30 years, I have worked in increasing levels of executive responsibility for four Fortune 200 companies establishing strategies for growth financially and culturally.

Most recently, I was EVP of Retail Operations for the parent company of VICTORIA’S Secret and Bath&Body Works, where I was directly responsible for over 40,000 associates and a multi-billion dollar operating budget.

» CU faces big challenges — public funding has been cut dramatically while tuitions are through the roof, and there are persistent gaps in enrollment and graduation rates for students of color. I believe Colorado’s flagship university system should be affordable and accessible to every Coloradan.

Whether a student is a Boettcher Scholar, first generation or a non-traditional student (or all three!), I want to ensure that they have the opportunity to attend CU, thrive, and graduate.

I’ve lived in Colorado for 30 years, as a CU scientist, CU educator, CU mom, and Colorado taxpayer. I held a similar position to Regent as a School Board Member for eight years, overseeing a $400 million budget, managing the superintendent with 3,500 employees, and serving 30,000 students, all during the 2008 recession when schools faced devastating funding cuts.

The money raised would not be enough to cover the total cost of all 66 projects, and project priorities would be determined by the Colorado Department of Transportation and the state Transportation Commission.

Proponents say the measure would address Colorado’s neglected road infrastructure, which they say contributes to traffic congestion and reduces the safety of motorists.

Opponents say the measure could divert funds that could be used for other state priorities, such as education, health care and other infrastructure maintenance.

Proposition 110: sales tax and bonds for transportation Another bill to address Colorado’s roads, Proposition 110 would raise the base state-level sales tax rate from 2.9 percent to 3.52 percent for 20 years to fund transportation projects around the state. The proposition would also authorize the Colorado Department of Transportation to borrow up to $6 billion, with a total repayment cost of up to $9.4 billion, to fund a variety of

transportation projects. A Colorado family making $74,000 a year would pay roughly $130 more a year in sales taxes.

Proponents say the measure would go a long way toward improving Colorado’s deteriorating highways, and that costs only increase the longer maintenance is deferred while population increases.

Opponents say the state should fund road projects with money it already collects, and that sales tax increases disproportionately impact low-income residents.

Proposition 111: reducing payday loan rates Payday loans are big business in Colorado, with 207,000 individuals taking out 414,000 payday loans totaling $166 million in 2016, according to state data. Proposition 111 would limit the annual percentage rate for repayment of the small, short-term loans, lowering the maximum APR to 36 percent down from the current average of 129 percent. Other fees can bring the APR up to roughly 180 percent. Under the proposition, repayment on a $500 loan would be no more than $553, as opposed to the current maximum, which could be as high as $793, not including fees that the proposition would eliminate.

Proponents say the measure would protect low-income consumers in financial crisis from predatory lenders, and give them a better chance to repay loans without becoming trapped in a cycle of debt.

Opponents say the measure could have the unintended consequence of eliminating the payday loan business in Colorado altogether, stripping consumers of easy access to quick cash that can help stave off bounced checks or utility shutoffs.

Proposition 112: oil and gas setbacks Easily the most contentious issue on Colorado’s ballot this year, Proposition 112 would increase the distance that oil and gas development can be built to 2,500 feet from homes, up from the current limit of 500 feet for homes and 1,000 feet from high-occupancy structures. The measure reflects increasing tensions over the presence of oil and gas development in Colorado, where oil production doubled between 2013 and 2017, according to state data. In 2017, there were 54,000 producing wells in Colorado, an increase of 48 percent from 2007. Oil and gas producers paid nearly $500 million in property taxes in 2017, and had many other wideranging economic impacts.

We need comprehensive, bipartisan immigration reform, and cooperation in Congress is the only way to achieve lasting policies we can agree and rely on. Like the vast majority of Coloradans, I support an immediate halt to the cruel separation of children from their families. My constituents have urged me to support a path to citizenship for DACA recipients and a federal guestworker program to help our district meet our labor needs. Like any complex challenge, we need to seek out evidence-based solutions.

No American should face bankruptcy or fear losing their insurance due to illness or injury. We can guarantee affordable healthcare to all Americans by using resources wisely, improving access and transparency, making it easier and more affordable for small businesses to provide insurance, and encouraging insurers and providers to compete. I support a public buy-in option for the popular and cost-effective Medicare system and harnessing the negotiating power of Medicare to reduce prescription drug costs.

The measure could also significantly reduce tax revenue that supports numerous state and local agencies.

Amendment A: eliminating slavery in the state constitution A revision of a failed 2016 measure, Amendment A would strike a provision in the Colorado Constitution that bans slavery “except as punishment for a crime.” The idea is to ensure that the state constitution unambiguously bans slavery.

What are two other issues that demand attention from Congress?

A fair economy: We’re working harder than ever before, but incomes haven’t kept pace with our productivity or the cost of living. Fair tax reform will help more Americans build wealth and hang onto the earnings we work so hard for. A better school system: We simply can’t afford to continue neglecting our schools. I will fight to ensure that our teachers and schools get the resources they need.

What else should voters know about you?

Establish and oversee strategic planning and key financial decisions that will directly impact the well being and success of almost 70,000 students and additional thousands of faculty and administration. Selection and oversight of the university system president and senior leadership. Ensure that our flagship state school is affordable for Colorado families.

I’m a fourth-generation Coloradan who grew up in a blue-collar family from Pueblo. I learned at an early age the importance of self reliance and responsibility from a working mother and a steelworker father of which neither had the opportunity for higher education. Between my scholarship and jobs I paid for 75 percent of my college education and I relished every credit hour I achieved as a step to a better life.

The Board of Regents hires and oversees the President of the University of Colorado system, oversees the University’s $4.5 billion budget (including setting tuition), and develops and oversees the governing policies for CU.

No. 1, hire a new president who is a visionary leader, can collaborate with the University’s diverse stakeholders and is an effective advocate for public and private funding for CU. Number 2, improve affordability for Colorado residents, in spite of drastic cuts to CU’s funding by the Legislature.

Recent efforts by the Boulder campus to keep tuition flat for incoming students and drop class fees are a step in the right direction.

One fun fact: I was the first woman aquanaut to live and work in the Aquarius Underwater Research Lab (think: underwater space station), and I’ve done aquatic research in the Amazon, the Artic and alpine lakes in Colorado. As a woman scientist, I’ve seen the gender gap in the scientific community firsthand, and I would love to see STEM enrollment reach 50/50 at CU.

While jail inmates in Colorado are not required to work, they face loss of privileges or delayed parole eligibility if they don’t.

Proponents say the measure unequivocally confirms Colorado’s commitment to striking from the books outdated language that prolongs the legacy of slavery.

Opponents say the measure is merely symbolic and could create legal confusion over offender work requirements.

Amendment V: lowering minimum age for state Legislature Colorado’s current minimum age for serving in the state legislature is 25, but Amendment V would lower the minimum to 21. The measure would bring Colorado in line with 43 other states that set the minimum age for serving in state legislative bodies between 18 and 21. About half of states, however, have higher thresholds for serving in state senates — generally between ages 25 and 30.

Proponents say lowering the minimum age encourages young people to participate in the civic process, and allows voters to decide whether a candidate has sufficient maturity to hold office.

Opponents say lack of experience and maturity could make young legislators ineffective.

Once elected, my administration will immediately get to work to bring universal, full-day preschool and kindergarten to every Colorado community. No child should start off at a disadvantage simply because their parents can’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on a preschool. I’ve been working on education throughout my career — I started schools for at-risk youth — and I’m ready to make it a priority as governor.

“You can get made up once and hit up a few parties,” Caballero said.

Shopping local beats the pop-up costume shops for Halloweenies who want to bring their A-game to the costume party, Caballero said, because the quality of the costumes is higher and staff is more knowledgeable.

Thrift stores, too, can be a boon to partygoers on a budget or for those who want some inspiration, said Lloyd Lewis, president of ARC thrift stores.

Halloween is among the busiest times of year for ARC’s 27 locations -along the Front Range, said Lewis.

However, going trick-or-treating door-to-door seems to be waning, said officer Rick Redmond, a spokesman for the Littleton Police Department.

“I couldn’t tell you why it seems to be fizzling out,” Redmond said.

“When I was a kid, the streets were just crawling with kids. Now the folks I talk to say they see just a few kids each year.”

Clarke’s Concert of the Week — Troye Sivan at Fillmore Auditorium One of the most exciting aspects about the pop landscape in 2018 is how diverse and eclectic it has become. For so long, only certain kinds of artists were given the spotlight, but South African Troye Sivan is rising to superstardom on his own terms.

He came out to the public as gay in a Youtube video in 2013 and since then has made no attempts to hide or apologize for who he is.

This self-acceptance is a great example for everyone, and that alone makes Sivan worth celebrating. On top of that, he makes truly top-notch pop tunes.

Sivan is bringing the tour for his excellent sophomore album “Bloom” to the Fillmore Auditorium, 1510 Clarkson in Denver, at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22. He’ll be joined by Kim Petras.

“Bloom” is an album full of love songs, at times silky and sexy and at others big-hearted and yearning.

Some events are more elaborate.

The Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, for example, will host their annual Trick or Treat Train event on Oct. 27 and 28.

Kids can ride railroad cars from the 1800s and make stops to get treats from train conductors in full costume, said Andrea Bestor, the museum’s guest services manager.

“It’s a great place to trick-or-treat in the daytime, without worrying about cars,” Bestor said. “The costumes are great, and there’s such excitement in the air. Everyone’s a kid on Halloween.”

When Pomona graduate Zack Rago joined the documentary crew of “Chasing Coral” he had no idea the impact it would have.

“It was an incredibly cool opportunity for me being a young graduate and being thrown into a world that I’m kind of passionate about,” said Rago, 26. “I’ve really enjoyed corals my whole life so to be able to shed light onto the current state of them to a world that sees the ocean as `out of site — out of mind,’ was a gift to me.”

Rago fell in love with coral reefs and the ocean as a child, accompanying his father, a long-time science teacher in Jeffco, on trips to the big island of Hawaii.

“I was always the nerdy kid who liked going out in the Rocky Mountains and catch snakes and frogs,” Rago recounted. “I think once I had the ocean opened up to me through my dad and Hawaii, that was what hooked me.”

“It’s easy to make a film like this, sell it to Netflix and then walk away with cash in your pocket,” Rago said.

“But for Jeff and Larissa, there is always this notion of an impact camping.”

Now, Rago works full time on that campaign bringing education on the dying reefs to communities all of the world. The goal is to inspire audiences with the film’s message, spark conversation and drive people to take meaningful action locally.

That’s why Rago is returning to Pomona High for a screening of the film.

“It’s been on my radar for a while,” Rago said of bringing a screening to Arvada. “It’s cool to share back with your own community. At the end of the day, when we talk about climate change as a whole, the most important thing we can do is think and act locally and have the most impact where we are.”

The screening is being hosted by the Pomona Arts and Humanities program, which integrates arts into all core classes.

“I think the message that `Chasing Coral’ has is so powerful,” said Jesse Collett, theater teacher and director

at Pomona High. “It’s such a beautiful way of talking about the impacts that us as humans have on our planet. And the documentary is just so well done.”

The other reason Collett wanted to show the film at Pomona was to celebrate Rago, a 2011 graduate.

“Part of inspiring our students is to show them what people that were once in their shoes are doing,” Collett said.

“One of the reason we really want to bring Zack here is because he grew up here in Colorado. It’s seeing the impact that he is now having with the perspective that we’re in a landlocked state. He can still have such a beautiful impact by doing research and going out and making a difference.”

Collett said the screening is a way of broadening student horizons to think outside of their immediate community.

“I think that there is a group of students that have a larger lens and they can see the importance of things even though it’s not in out backyard,” Collett said. “But I think we also have students that don’t see any of it.”

The screening, which will be held Oct. 26 with a Q&A with Rago to follow is open to everyone, with the theater maxing out at 500 seats.

“We want to get as many people here as we possibly can,” Collett said. “We want to spread this cool educational experience. We want this to be an Arvada thing, not just Pomona.”

Lutheran Medical Center introduces new stroke tool New tech shows doctors real-time 3-D images of blood vessels and soft tissue

When doctors at Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge are treating a patient who suffered from a stroke, they’ll be armed with a new technology that they expect to increase quality of stroke care.

The medical center hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate its new, state-ofthe-art biplane angiography system. The technology has two cameras that shows doctors detailed, real-time 3-D images of blood vessels and soft tissue of a patient.

Being able to see those things will help doctors treating a patient who suffered from strokes like an ischemic stroke or a hemorrhagic stroke. Patients suffer from an ischemic stroke when an artery to the brain is blocked, and a hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a weakened vessel

ruptures and bleeds into the brain.

Lutheran Medical Center officials expect their newest tool to help doctors be timelier and more precise of a diagnosis, leading to patients having a greater chance of survival and being able to regain cognitive and physical abilities.

“This is going to be the best piece of equipment in the state. That’s really important when you’re doing what we’re doing with this comprehensive stroke strategy,” President and CEO of Lutheran Medical Center Grant Wicklund said. “It’s going to save a lot of people’s lives and mobility.”

The new technology will also assist doctors when they are placing catheters through the brain, a tube that can be used when performing a surgery. The medical center also expects the technology to be able to assist with neuro coil-

LITTLETON — The weather was great during the Oct. 11 Jeffco League 4A and 5A races.

However, rain and snow during the week left a few damp places on the course.

In the 4A boys race, Green Mountain sophomore Grahm Tuohy-Gaydos won the individual title and Golden edged Littleton for the team crown.

There were two familiar faces to win the 5A and 4A girls races. Lakewood senior Carley Bennett was all smiles as she crossed the finish line to win her third individual league title.

Wheat Ridge senior Tiya Chamberlin has been in the mix for four years and won her second straight 4A Jeffco title.

Valor (5A) and D’Evelyn (4A) came away with the girls team titles.

“Every year we are one of the best leagues,” said Chamberlin, who is the daughter of longtime Wheat Ridge coaches Scott and Judy Chamberlin. “I have total respect for these girls and that is what pushed me to that next level.

Coming here I knew I was going to face some serious competition.”

Nothing simple about football playoff format

T

here are still two weeks remaining in the regular season, but it’s never too early to review the format for the state football playoffs.

The Colorado High School Activities Association revealed the postseason plan before the season, and CHSAANow.com OVERTIME recently released the format again.

So here’s what to expect in the playoffs — except for winners and losers. And it is probably best not to try to figure out the ratings percentage index Jim Benton (RPI). Just wait for the standings to be updated.

If anybody does want to figure out an RPI standing for a team, the formula calculates combining 37.5 percent of a team’s winning percentage, 37.5 percent of the opponent’s winning percentage and 25 percent of opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage.

So, here’s the basic, non-detailed outline for the Class 5A playoff bracket.

The six league winners receive automatic berths into the playoffs and draw first-round byes. The next 17 teams in the RPI rankings will advance into the post-season with the exception of a second team from the Metro 10 Conference.

That’s 23 teams with the last spot in the 24-team 5A playoffs going to an at-large team selected by the seeding committee.

The Metro 10 will have its champion advance into the playoffs, but the league can only have a second team qualify through an at-large berth.

Final RPI rankings, common opponents, strength of schedule, head-to-head matchups and, hopefully, a little common sense will be used to seed teams.

RPI standings change weekly and, with two more weeks remaining, there should be a lot of movement.

The Oct. 7 RPI standings for 5A had a bunch of bubble teams around the all-important 24th spot.

Lakewood was 21st, followed in order by Far Northeast, Horizon, Boulder, Fossil Ridge, Northglenn and Legend.

In 4A, 3A and 2A conference champions receive automatic tickets into the playoffs with the remaining teams advancing based on RPI rankings. Playoff brackets will have 16 teams.

National leader Colorado Mesa University volleyball player Kasie Gilfert, a redshirt sophomore from Legend, is a national leader in NCAA Division II statistics.

Gilfert, who has won back-to-back Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors,

holds the national statistical lead for hitting percentage at .443. She has hit at a .400 percent or better clip in 10 matches this season, and before matches against Dixie State and Westminster on Oct. 12-13, Gilfert had 246 kills with 44 errors in 456 total attempts.

Gilfert, a 6-foot middle blocker/right side hitter who transferred from Northern Arizona, was a four-year letterman at Legend and set single-season school records as a junior for hitting percentage (.428) and blocks (158).

Nonprofit helps clothe children in need Clothes to Kids of Denver serves metro area families

nside a storefront in a corner of a shopping center off Colorado Boulevard, a group of teenage girls sorts through piles of clothes and hangers. They chatter as they work, pointing out national brand names like Vineyard Vines as they go through the donated clothes.

Student Marygrace Adam, who with her peers from St. Mary’s Academy is volunteering this day at Clothes to Kids of Denver, is glad to be helping.

“These clothes are going to people who need it,” she said.

The nonprofit receives donations every day, said Katie Jones Jadwin, executive director of the organization that operates at 2890 S. Colorado Blvd. The sorting room is lined with folded clothes. Bags of recently donated items fill bins by the front door. Clothes to Kids operates a store in the same shopping area where people can make an appointment to get school wardrobes for their kids.

Each child receives five tops, four bottoms, a coat, a pair of shoes, as well as five pairs of underwear and socks, all for free. The socks and underwear are guaranteed to be new, Jones Jadwin said. The store offers clothes to people from 3 to 21 years old, as long as students are enrolled in a school or GED program.

Serving those in need Parents are referred to Clothes to Kids by aid organizations, schools or nonprofits. Children in foster care or children who qualify for free and reduced lunch also qualify for clothes at the nonprofit. Families can get clothes for their children once every six months, Jones Jadwin said.

The nonprofit also offers what Jones Jadwin calls extras — books, games, cleats and play clothes.

While socks and underwear will always be popular items, shoes and coats can be the difference between

“If they have any type of walking or bus trip, where they have to wait at the bus stop, we found that coats really lower truancy rates,” she said.

Last year, the nonprofit handed out 9,454 wardrobes. In September, it gave out its 50,000th wardrobe and in July its 1 millionth piece of clothing.

Clothes to Kids is hoping to give out close to 10,000 wardrobes this year, Jones Jadwin said.

Although the nonprofit allows for people to come in for clothes twice per year, about 80 percent of the families only visit during back-toschool season. During that time, the nonprofit has 100 appointments a day.

Clothes to Kids also helps families experiencing a crisis.

Saying yes to everyone In 2008, Clothes to Kids started in the shop where the sorting area is now housed. The crammed shop had room for one dressing room. At first, the organization only served the city of Denver. But as word spread about Clothes to Kids, people began coming in from all over the state, Jones Jadwin said. Now, the store serves Denver, Boulder, Broomfield, Douglas, Jefferson, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Adams, Arapahoe and Elbert counties.

“A lot of people are willing to make the drive,” Jones Jadwin said. “We really decided to expand so we could say yes to everybody.”

The shop has also expanded in size.

Clothes to Kids moved to its current location in 2010. The larger space was larger included a room in the back for sorting donated clothes.

In 2014, the nonprofit expanded again by knocking out the back walls and using the whole space for a store. At that time, it also began renting out the original shop space as a sorting area.

Since Clothes to Kids serves some children in foster care, Jones Jadwin said it was important to separate the donation space from the rest of the store. This way, clothing donated in trash bags is kept in the sorting area and away from the shopping side.

“It was kind of triggering for our youth in foster care. If they’ve been removed from home, often their belongings are all thrown in a black garbage bag,” Jones Jadwin said.

“When they come here I don’t want them to see a black trash bag during a visit. I want them to see pretty clothes arranged how they like.”

While her children looked at shoes, Trujillo sorted through a rack of clothes in the back of the store. She said she was grateful to Clothes to Kids for helping her get back on her feet. She plans on bringing in clothing that her own children have outgrown, as a way to give back.

“It’s my turn, you know,” she said.

“You get some and you return some.”

Program seeks Colorado’s top youth volunteers STAFF REPORT

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is looking for Colorado’s top youth volunteers of the year.

Students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply through Nov. 6 for 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards if they have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service in the past 12 months. The application is available at http://spirit.prudential.com and www.nassp.org/spirit.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards was created in 1995 to recognize the volunteer work of middle level and high school students. The awards have been granted annually for the past 23 years on local, state and national levels.

“After more than two decades of honoring young volunteers, we know that students are a powerful force for good,” Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld said in a news release. “We shine a spotlight on their service in hopes that others will be inspired to follow their example.”

The top middle level and high school volunteer from each state and the District of Columbia will be named state honorees on Feb. 5, and receive $1,000, engraved silver medallions and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., with a parent or guardian for four days of recognition events from May 4-7.

In Washington, a national selection committee will name 10 of the 102 state honorees as America’s top youth

volunteers of the year. National honorees will receive additional awards of $5,000 and $5,000 grants from The Prudential Foundation for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.

Colorado’s top youth volunteers of 2018 were Savannah Rock, 18, of Aurora, who began a campaign in 2011 to promote the inclusion of students with disabilities in all aspects of school life and to change the way her whole community views and engages with people who have traditionally been excluded because of disability, race, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation, and Addison Kleinhans, 14, of Broomfield, who has delivered more than 130 speeches to raise money for childhood cancer causes and to motivate others to stay positive in the face of adversity.
