Meet Joan Chávez-Lee, Meet Susan Miller, candidate for school board candidate for school board

Before Joan Chávez-Lee was a Jeffco principal, she was a Jeffco parent. She was raising her kindergarten-aged daughter on her own when, inspired by how impactful her daughter’s teacher was, ChávezLee set out to become a teacher herself.

Just over a decade later, she became a principal, leading several schools over the years including Russell Elementary, Molholm Elementary and Wheat Ridge Middle School.

In each, she sought to make a difference, she said, often by working to bolster the schools’ Chavez Lee on-site programs for low-income and immigrant families: food banks, laundromats, health clinics and dual-language programs, to name a few.

Having since retired, Chávez-Lee is now running for the Director District 4 position on Jefferson County’s Board of Education.

In addition to her educator and administrative roles, Chávez-Lee has served on multiple PTAs and district committees. The Lakewood resident first decided to run for the board after being encouraged to do so by current board members, she said.

If elected, she would advocate for an increase to teacher salaries. She added that she would like to explore how Jeffco can work to earn public trust and funding to allow for greater salary increases.

When the district asks the public for financial support, she said, Jeffco needs to ensure “people understand the money’s being used for teacher salaries.”

Chávez-Lee would also focus on promoting student achievement, particularly as measured by standard-

ized test scores.

Her approach to do so includes sticking close to the district strategic plan, Jeffco Generations. The plan calls on all Jeffco educators to emphasize six other skills, such as civic engagement and creativity, as much as the teachers emphasize content mastery.

Having met with many immigrant families while working as an administrator, Chávez-Lee believes education’s “job is to teach kids how to be a good citizen,” she said - which to her, aligns with the Jeffco Generations plan.

However, she also believes the district needs to “try to figure out how to interweave those (content mastery) skills and the authentic learning,” she said. “It can be done.”

She suggested further analysis of testing data to ensure the plan is working effectively. She would push for an analysis of test scores and teaching practices not only at the school level, but also at the classroom level, so district leaders could work with specific educators on implementing Jeffco Generations effectively.

Chávez-Lee also emphasized thoughtfulness when distributing funds to individual schools. She believes the schools most in need of funding are the “middle-of-the-road schools” — schools that may only have some low-income families, and therefore do not receive as much Title I funding as others but, at the same time, do not have an active parent-base to help raise funds.

Those schools are “where you would see the most impact” if funding was increased, she said; she would like the district to take a closer look at how it could support those schools financially.

“You have to evaluate the situation at different scales,” she said. “We owe all students the best education we can come by.”

Lakewood resident Susan Miller has two distinct backgrounds: a longtime finance professional, she has worked as an investment banker and company vice president; and a mother of four former Jeffco students, she has been involved in district committees, PTAs and the Jefferson County Association for Gifted Children, of which she was president for six years.

As Miller spent time in finance and education, she realized that principles from both can overlap — and, she said, they should. In Jeffco especially, it’s time for school board Miller members to pursue better financial practices, she said.

“We have struggled to put measures in place and reassess,” she said. “The board needs to hold to task the superintendent and district staff.”

Hoping to bring this perspective to the district, Miller is running for the Director District 4 position on the Board of Education.

Miller works as associate director at Cooperative Strategies, a consulting firm for education agencies.

Having spent years as an advocate for Jeffco students and as a Jeffco parent, she has become increasingly concerned by the district’s “stagnant” growth rate on standardized tests, she said.

“We have to realize we’re not feeding our kids to be competitive in the 21st century,” she said. “We have to make sure our children are wellprepared.”

If elected to the board, Miller said she would prioritize boosting student achievement. Particularly, she would like to look into boosting third-grade reading scores, feeling too few Jeffco third graders are reading at grade

level.

To do so, the district should reassess how effective its current achievement-boosting initiatives are, she said. She gave the 1:1 device program as an example — recently established, the district program will provide every student with a schoolissued laptop or tablet.

The district needs to better outline what it wants the program to accomplish, she said. For example, the district could set a goal, such as a 10% increase in the number of 1:1 users reading at grade level after their first year in the program. If the benchmark is not met, the district could then reconsider whether to continue funding the program.

“That’s a huge investment we’ve committed to, and we don’t have any measures of success,” she said.

The same applies to professional development programming, she said, advocating for more data collection on how current professional development has boosted student performance.

Miller would also push to raise teacher starting salaries. This would likely require Jeffco to cut funding for under-performing programs and redirect it to teacher compensation, as well as “balance our (hiring) needs to the (downward) trajectory of enrollment,” she said.

As for student programming, she would like to see career pipeline programs available in every school.

The programs allow students to earn credit while gaining real-world experience in industries like construction or hospitality.

Miller, who said her son benefitted greatly from such a program, suggested Jeffco work with other districts to create a state or regional program for students.

“We need to recognize that all children can learn,” she said, “and we need to have high expectations for all children.”

Program gives fourth-graders free entrance to parks Every Kid Outdoors provides annual passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas

Fourth-grade students can get a free annual pass to visit more than 2,000 federal recreation areas with their families, classmates, and friends.

The Every Kid Outdoors Program is an interagency collaboration of the

Department of the Interior, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Forest Service that provides fourth-graders with free access to explore, learn, and recreate in national parks, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, forests and more.

“Introducing fourth-grade students to America’s public lands provides them with limitless opportunities to have fun, be active, improve fitness, and learn critical skills,” U.S. Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt said in a news release. “Visits on class trips or family vacations to the rich variety of astonishing landscapes and

historic treasures located on public lands will result in unforgettable experiences and, hopefully, forge lifelong connections to the outdoors.”

The bipartisan John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management and Recreation Act, which was signed into law by President Trump on March 12, 2019, authorized funding for Every Kid Outdoors for the next seven years.

Cars Have Titles Which Are Transferred Upon Sale. Homes Do Not. So What’s a ‘Deed’?

One of my sellers whose closing is fast approaching called me in a panic last week because she couldn’t find the deed to her house, which she thought she’d need to bring to closing.

I explained to her that a deed is not the same thing as a title, and that all she needs to bring to closing is her driver’s license or similar ID to prove who she is.

In fact, there is no “title” to her house. A “deed” is a legal document which transfers property. It is not proof of ownership. When a deed is recorded by the county clerk, it results in the county changing its records to reflect the new owner’s name(s), and the deed, once recorded — formerly microfilmed, now scanned into the clerk & recorder’s database — is then mailed back to the new owner. At that point, it doesn’t matter if you lose or misplace your deed, because the county has the proof of your ownership.

This is different from how motor ve-

hicles are transferred, where you have a title to your car and must sign it over to the new owner when you sell your car. If you lose your title, there’s a procedure for replacing it, but you need that physical title to sell your car. Not so with real estate.

That seller is not alone in not understanding what a “deed” is. And there are different kinds of deeds. The deed which is used most often is a “warranty deed,” meaning that the seller warrants that they are the owner of the property and hereby transfer it to the buyer. There are “general” and “special” warranty deeds. I won’t go into the difference here, since the purpose of title insurance is to provide the buyer with a guarantee, regardless of the type of deed, that they are receiving the property free and clear of any claims of ownership or indebtedness by anyone other than the seller.

sold by the “personal representative” of the estate (called an “executor” in other states), so the property is transferred by a “personal representative’s deed.” If the property is purchased at a foreclosure auction conducted by the Public Trustee (who enforces the “deed of trust” securing the mortgage for the lender), then the transfer is made via a “trustee’s deed.”

Whichever kind of deed is used, the fact remains that the deed only exists as

testimony to the sale, and it does not need to be presented ever again.

I am not a lawyer, and I am providing this information as I have been taught and as I understand it from real estate classes and from my experience as a real estate licensee. You’ll want to engage a lawyer if you require further explanation, and I, like any real estate licensee, can refer you to one or more real estate lawyers.

Here’s My Advice on Buying Solar Panels and Electric Cars In the wake of last Saturday’s “green homes” tour and electric vehicle showcase, I’d like to share the advice I give to people who ask me regarding both solar power and electric cars.

As much as I wish it weren’t so, you will not recoup what you spend on solar power, insulation and other green home improvements for your home when you sell it. As with any improvement, you will receive a percentage of what you spend, but it will not be anywhere near 100%. Only make those investments because you’ll be able to enjoy the comfort and savings for at least a few years,

and because it’s the “right thing to do.”

Regarding electric cars, I recommend buying a used EV. The used car industry has yet to properly value used EVs. Most electric cars are devalued similarly to how gas cars are devalued, which makes no sense. Consider a 4-year-old gas car with 100,000 miles on it. You can probably get it for half price, which makes sense because so many components could fail soon, such as transmission, timing belt, fuel pump, etc. But none of these exist on an EV. There are under 50 moving parts in a Tesla. The same age EV is simply as good as new.

nother Cider Days is in the books for the city of Lakewood. The city held its Cider Days festival for the 44th time on Oct. 5 and Oct. 6. The traditional celebration is Lakewood’s signature event and features fun for people of all ages. Cider Days draws thousands of people each year from all across the Denver metro area.

Historic demonstrator for Lakewood Cider Days About me Back when we lived in Connecticut, my family and I loved to get out on our sail boat. That was a great thing to do with my two sons. If you want to get really close with your family, get a sail boat.

You learn a lot about each other.

I went to the University of Purdue, but I ended up spending a career as a cabinet maker. That was a really good fit, and it was something I liked doing. It might’ve been something I got from my dad. I watched him redo our basement, and I was amazed he had that skill.

My parents moved out here back in 1976. I had plans to move out here, but I ended up getting married, had my sons, and I just ended up staying in Connecticut. We finally made it out here seven years ago, and now we live in Westminster.

JOSEPH RIOS Cider Days roots My mother taught me how to cane a chair when I was 11. My parents were always involved in Cider Days since they moved out here. They loved to do historic chair caning demonstrations when they were alive. I did a few Cider Days historic demonstrations with my mother.

I’ve been doing it for four

years now. I guess I do it as a way to pay tribute to my parents. What can I say, I owe them everything. They really enjoyed coming here and sharing what they knew.

I think it’s a crime to not pass knowledge. It’s rewarding. Especially when you get someone at your historic demonstrations who is really receptive.

The voucher is valid for multiple use between Sept. 1, 2019, and Aug. 31, 2020, to correspond to the traditional school year. The voucher may be exchanged for a keepsake pass at participating federal lands.

The voucher or pass grants free entry for fourth-graders, all children under 16 in the group and up to three accompanying adults (or an entire car for drive-in parks) to most federally managed lands and waters. The pass does not cover expanded amenity fees such as camping or boat rides.

Fourth-grade educators are also encouraged to take advantage of the wide range of educational programs and tools associated with the Every Kid Outdoors Program.

Educational activities, field trip options, information and tools in English and Spanish, and the ability to print vouchers for passes for students are all available on the website.

The Every Kid Outdoors Program replaces the Every Kid in a Park Program that was established in 2015.

The program focuses on children 10 years of age — the age of most fourth graders — based on research that indicates children ages 9-11 are at a unique developmental stage in their learning where they begin to understand how the world around them works in more concrete ways and they are more receptive to engaging with nature and the environment.

By focusing on this age group year after year, the program aims to ensure every child in the United States has the opportunity to visit their federal lands and waters by the time he or she is 11 years old, thereby establishing a lifelong connection to enjoy and protect our American outdoor heritage.

Seven federal agencies participate in the program: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

In the past year since Gwyn Green’s death, Golden residents approached Golden Mayor Marjorie Sloan to ask her to come up with a way to memorialize the late state in one way or another.

They had suggested naming a street after her, Sloan said, or to set aside a special day in her honor.

“But none of these ideas seemed to strike the right chord,” Sloan said.

“Then I realized that a Red Rocks Scholarship would be a lasting and meaningful tribute to Gwyn’s commitment to education, equity and social well-being.”

On Oct. 10, in partnership with the Red Rocks Community College Foundation, a small committee of local residents launched the Gwyn Green Memorial Scholarship Fund.

A scholarship is a fitting way to honor Green, said Jacob Smith, one of the committee members and former mayor of Golden.

“This embodies everything she (Green) believed in — helping people

The scholarship fund will be a $50,000 endowment that will provide one student a $2,000 scholarship per academic year to attend Red Rocks Community College, which has a campus in Lakewood and Arvada. The $2,000 will cover the cost of two classes and fees per semester.

The first scholarship will be awarded in May 2020 for the following academic year.

TREASURES FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

Any Red Rocks student, current or future, will be eligible for the scholarship and there is no residency requirement. The only caveat is that the scholarship will go to a student pursuing the social sciences, to honor the contributions Green made to the community.

Social Sciences studies at Red Rocks include psychology, sociology, communication, political science, criminal justice, anthropology, geography and economics.

Social Sciences are a field for anyone looking to better their community, said Ron Slinger, the college’s vice president of institutional advancement and executive director of the Red Rocks Community College Foundation.

Green was “a champion for trying to help the underserved,” Slinger said.

“The social sciences go hand-in-hand with that.”

battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Green is remembered for being a fierce advocate for seniors and children. She was a licensed clinical social worker, specializing in assisting the elderly poor and children. She served as a Golden city councilmember from 2001-2004. In November 2004, Green was elected to represent District 23, which encompasses parts of Lakewood and Golden. She held the seat from 2005-2009 when she resigned for health reasons.

In addition, Green was involved with the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), the League of Women Voters and Save the Mesas — a citizen-led protest group that formed following a 1997 proposal by Nike to relocate its world headquarters to South Table Mountain in Golden.

Green faced some difficulties in her life, but she had persistence and she was certainly a leader, said Green’s widower Dan Green.

The hope is that the students who receive this scholarship will be inspired by her lifelong commitment to social justice, Dan Green added. “I think she’d be pretty happy if it worked out that way.”

The yarn and needle group from Standley Lake Library is collecting items for those in need of warm items this winter.

Residents can make or donate completed, handmade items such as knitted, crocheted or sewn mittens, hats, scarves, small animals and blankets to assist Family Tree. The library has patterns available for people to take, or they are welcome to use their own. New purchased items also are welcome.

“We are always in need of hats, scarves and gloves, especially for men and teen males,” Family Tree Development Coordinator Tami Mawhir said in a news release. “There is also a need for baby blankets.”

Very soft and warm yarn or fleece and flannel are suggested for baby and children items.

Items for the caring community challenge should be placed in a plastic bag labeled with the appropriate target age and dropped off at the library until Nov. 7. Family Tree will do a ceremonial pickup of collected items during the yarn and needle group’s monthly meeting Nov. 7 at the Standley Lake Library.

“I have known about Family Tree

and the good work they do for years,” Neila Achter, the yarn and needle group’s arts coordinator, said in a news release. “I know that Family Tree has a good reputation and will use the items where most needed.”

Family Tree is a Wheat Ridge-based nonprofit incorporated in 1976 that provides innovative and life-changing services designed to end homelessness, domestic violence and child abuse.

“The library’s yarn and needle art’s group is so happy to be partnering with Family Tree,” Achter said in the release. “We look forward to promoting and fulfilling this community need. Standley Lake Library’s Yarn and Needle Arts group began in 2014 and meets from 5:30-8 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. The informal group is comprised of all skill levels and works under the guidance of Achter.

This is the group’s third year of completing community challenge events. In 2018, together with the public, the group created 1,275 items for the Arvada Fire District. In 2017, group members knit baby items for Warm Hearts, Warm Babies, an Arvada-based charity. And in 2016, they contributed 175 chemo caps to the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center.

SeaQuest hopes to turn page after ‘mistakes’ Employee of aquarium found not guilty of animal cruelty

Ashleigh Belfiore burst into tears of relief as the judge read the jury’s verdict: not guilty of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

Belfiore, 28, stood accused of abusing and neglecting a sloth under her care at SeaQuest, an “interactive aquarium” at Southwest Plaza shopping mall in south Jefferson County. A jury of six acquitted her on Oct 1.

The sloth, named Flash, suffered two burns on a heat lamp in its enclosure about a month apart in late 2018, according to testimony from investigators from Jefferson County Animal Control and the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife.

In a two-day trial, prosecutors alleged that Belfiore — who still works as a manager for SeaQuest — had misled investigators about when the burns occurred and about whether a veterinarian had been notified.

Dr. Jena Questen, who runs Aspen Park Veterinary Hospital in Conifer and is SeaQuest’s contracted veterinarian, testified in the trial that she wasn’t alarmed that she wasn’t contacted after Flash was burned. Bel-

fiore’s response to the sloth’s injuries — treating Flash’s burns with honey, coconut oil and antibiotic cream — was appropriate, she said.

Questen said she trusts SeaQuest staff to make good decisions.

“I’m staking my reputation as a veterinarian on this,” Questen testified.

“I would not be affiliated with this organization in any way if I felt they were jeopardizing the health or safety of animals.”

Mistakes were made David Slater, SeaQuest Littleton’s general manager, said he hopes Belfiore’s acquittal is a turning point for the combination aquarium and zoo.

“We made mistakes,” Slater said.

“I’m trying to own up to them. We’ve put in processes and procedures to prevent those things from happening again. I’d like to move on.”

SeaQuest, part of a nationwide chain, offers visitors an interactive experience with animals. Guests can feed iguanas and tropical birds, and even go snorkeling with stingrays.

The facility is home to 250 species, Slater said — many donated by locals who could no longer care for them — spread across 45 exhibits.

But almost as soon as the facility opened in spring 2018, it drew controversy and condemnation.

DAVID GILBERT or CPW. Investigators found cages illegally overcrowded with birds. Staff failed to report animal deaths and visitor injuries. One manager was found to be keeping a two-toed sloth and two capybaras in her house.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture issued a cease-and-desist order to the facility in summer 2018, demanding the number of birds be reduced. A local news station later found a teenage employee selling some of the birds from the back of a van in a parking lot.

SeaQuest fired the facility’s general manager and assistant manager in August 2018, Slater said, and brought him and Belfiore on board.

In early August, investigators said a rubber band around a lobster’s claw was too tight, but wrote that the issue was resolved. A report that a macaw parrot was plucking its feathers out was listed as “unfounded.”

Department of Agriculture investigators have not turned up any further violations since the cease-and-desist order in summer 2018, said Nick Fisher, who enforces the department’s Pet Animal Care Facilities Act. Slater changed the facility’s policy after Flash’s injuries, he said, and all animal injuries are now required to be reported to a veterinarian, regardless of severity.

Permit revoked Two days after he started, according to a CPW investigation, the facility’s general manager Slater turned over incident reports for numerous earlier injuries that had not previously been reported to state officials as required.

“My hope was to do the right thing and clear everything up,” Slater said.

Instead, after Flash received burns from the heat lamp in October and November, CPW charged Belfiore with animal cruelty. At a hearing in early 2019, CPW revoked SeaQuest’s permit to show exotic animals, citing numerous violations.

SeaQuest was forced to remove numerous species, including snakes, otters, capybaras, and Flash the sloth.

Flash now lives at SeaQuest’s Minnesota location, where visitors can pay $24.95 each to spend a few minutes petting and feeding him in his enclosure, according to the facility’s website.

SeaQuest Littleton replaced the removed species with non-exotic animals that didn’t fall under CPW’s jurisdiction, Slater said, including pigs, ducks and Savannah cats.

Since then, SeaQuest has drawn a handful of complaints to Jefferson County Animal Control, according to county records. Two visitors were bitten by a pig, in April and July. The offending pig has since been sent to a

The animal welfare group broke the story of the charges against Belfiore, and said in a news release that her case is why “PETA urges everyone to stay away from” SeaQuest.

Southwest Plaza manager Greg Sims did not respond to a request for comment about SeaQuest Littleton.

SeaQuest locations in other states have drawn controversy as well. The chain’s Las Vegas location was cited for illegally breeding otters, according to news reports, and lost an exotic animal permit. In a news report, former employees alleged animal mistreatment, neglect and unreported deaths.

SeaQuest now has seven open locations nationwide, according to the company’s website, with three locations slated to open soon. PETA recently filed a request with the federal Department of Agriculture to shut the company down, according to a news release.

Slater said he hopes SeaQuest Littleton’s problems are behind it.

“I like coming to work here,” Slater said. “These are good people, and this is a good place. I want people to see that we’re clean.”

Coffee with a Cop Day in Wheat Ridge The event aims to open communication between law enforcement and the public

Police officers started off their Wednesday morning just like how they would any other morning — with a steaming hot cup of coffee — only this time they did it with the people they serve.

At least 10 officers from the Colorado State Patrol and the Wheat Ridge Police Department were standing at the front of a Starbucks at 3210 Youngfield St. on the morning of Oct. 2. The officers, standing in front of a table with coffee, pastries and giveaways, were there for Coffee with a Cop Day. Coffee with a Cop Day aims to open communication between law enforcement and the people they serve to improve relations.

“It’s just chatting with a cop and getting good relations in. We’ve had people thank us for our work, and it’s just been great talking to them,” said Brian Cook, a Wheat Ridge Police officer.

“It’s a great way for the community to interact with the officers and to have an opportunity to thank the officers for everything they do for us,” said Marquess.

Other people like Lori Williams, a Westminster resident and former Wheat Ridge resident, had planned on going to the event. She decided to attend to participate in a community event.

“This raises awareness that every position is important in the community and the area that we’re involved in,” said Williams.

Kaiser, unions reach agreement, likely averting strike Tentative deal arrives before strike that was scheduled to begin Oct. 14

Facing down the possibility of a strike by tens of thousands of workers nationwide, Kaiser Permanente and the coalition of Kaiser workers’ unions reached a tentative deal that the coalition called a “historic agreement.”

The Sept. 25 deal must be approved by a union workers’ vote that is expected to be complete by the end of October, according to a Kaiser news release.

A few thousand Kaiser Permanente workers in Colorado were poised to participate in a seven-day strike beginning Oct. 14, following what the local union branch said was a lack of progress in a push for fair negotiation and wage increases that keep up with the cost of living.

“We’ve been seeing Kaiser for a year and a half not come to the

table, not listen to concerns about understaffing, outsourcing,” said David Fernandez, spokesperson for Service Employees International Union Local 105, the union’s Colorado branch.

The agreement is “a big win,” Fernandez said.

Kaiser Permanente Colorado had characterized the possible strike as a “corporate campaign designed to leverage (unions) better at the bargaining table,” as Nick Roper, a Kaiser Permanente Colorado spokesperson, said in mid-September. Kaiser’s offer to employees at the time included “solid wage increases” and other benefits, Roper had said.

“We greatly respect and value our employees who deliver on our mission every day,” Arlene Peasnall, interim chief human resources officer of Kaiser Permanente Health Plan and Hospitals, said in the news release. “This agreement is a testament to the dedication, compassion and skill those employees bring to work every day and demonstrates that Kaiser Permanente and the coalition have a shared commitment to affordability for our members.”

y best friend growing up had a lot of wonderful qualities, not the least of which was a willingness to put up with me. Michael — yes, we shared a name — was brilliant, industrious, talented, and really adept at working with people. But, after all these years, the thing I remember most about him was his fiendishly quick wit: he was incredibly funny. And not just slapstick and puns and low humor of that sort — he was able to make broad references and drive through much of the fog of everyday teenagehood in an incisive and clever way.

And, when I think about it, it seems to me that many of the most brilliant comic minds are those that have an insane grasp of a wide array of subject matter and the sort of rapid recall that is usually common among geniuses. In particular, I think of people like Dennis Miller, whose humor is sometimes so deep that I have no idea what he’s talking about. But, then I think of people like Steven Wright, Eddie Murphy, and George Carlin, and especially the manic genius of Robin Williams, and I am convinced that the best humor comes from great intellect and broad learning.

And, yeah, I know — old school. I’m sure there are really talented younger comics working today with similar talents. I just don’t know any of them by name.

And, also, it’s possible that my tastes are outdated. It seems these

days, a lot of what passes for humor is just goofing around and trying to be disruptive. I think of it as “clown culture,” and everybody wants to be a part of it.

Where does clown culture come from? To my thinking, it started somewhere about the time that a crazy talented young HITTING man from PhiladelHOME phia was getting his start as a humorist/ rap star making the jump to television as “The Fresh Prince.”

The Prince, on the television show, was notorious for constant attempts at simple humor and a tendency to waste his talents in Michael Alcorn the pursuit of cheap laughs. His legacy was passed on to the entire canon of Disney Channel shows, all of which seemed to feature smart aleck kids and buffoonish adults.

I’m sure clown culture started before The Fresh Prince. Vinnie Barbarino, Eddie Haskell, even Gilligan — all of these characters had similar modus operandii. But, all of these characters were part of an ensemble, not carrying their shows on their comic backs. And there were always adults somewhere.

tions on outsourcing. As part of the deal, a committee will also advise Kaiser on ways to prevent replacing certain workers with automation, according to Fernandez.

What agreement includes More than 80,000 Kaiser workers in seven states and the District of Columbia are members of the coalition of unions and were at play in the negotiations with Kaiser.

The four-year agreement includes annual raises of 3% in each of the four years for workers in California, Oregon and southern Washington, according to a news release from the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions. In Colorado, Hawaii, Virginia, Maryland, D.C. and the rest of Washington state, workers will receive raises of 3% the first year and 2% plus a 1% lump sum the following three years, according to the release.

Full protection of retirement benefits for current and future employees — and an expansion of retirement benefits in Hawaii, Virginia, Maryland and D.C. — are also included, according to the release.

Kaiser’s outsourcing and automating jobs away have also been sticking points for the unions, according to Fernandez.

Medical assistants, licensed practical nurses, pharmacy technicians, medical technicians and administrative and support staff, among other positions, were among those who may have gone on strike.

Physicians and registered nurses were generally not expected to strike. Mental health workers were not part of the potential strike.

In Colorado, about 1,200 Kaiser physicians and another 3,200 Kaiser workers weren’t part of the current negotiations and weren’t expected to strike.

Why does this concern me? Because I am starting to see a trickledown effect in the schools that I teach at, and it worries me. At the same time that we in the schools are more concerned than ever with test scores and Advanced Placement and high-anxiety achievements, what I’m seeing from the students is a reversion to the clown culture.

NOT UNIVERSALLY! But enough, especially compared to five or 10 years ago, that it worries me.

Kids — mostly, but not exclusively, boys — seem quite a bit more interested in entertaining their peers than in accomplishing anything; they seek the cheap laugh, rather than the challenging skill. After all, why bother learning how to play beautiful melodies by Mozart and Beethoven when you can make

What’s the big deal? Aren’t kids — especially boys — always going to be kids? Of course they are.

And I also think boys are terribly served in the schools today. Why else would women outnumber men in college enrollment by 50% now?

Have boys given up on being the great achievers and, instead, embraced the role of court jester?

I hope not; but I also know that our microwave society has taught kids to seek instant rewards, and a Disney-esque laugh track is a lot quicker than an “A.” I just hope there are enough Michaels and Robins and Dennises around show kids that you can be both.

Time to get in shape

s the Denver metro area’s temperature begins to drop, it’s that time of year again when the beach bod no longer matters and it’s the snow bod that needs some work.

That’s why the staff at Colorado Community Media decided to go out and find tips from ski/snowboard coaches and personal trainers on getting in shape to hit the slopes.

Those interviewed agreed that some of the most important things to keep in mind are cross training, eating right and taking it easy on the first few days in the mountains.

They offered exercises, stretches, meal ideas and ways to avoid injury.

Exercises to do at home When trying to decide what exercises and muscle groups to focus on before snow season, Michael Restivo of Colorado Mountain Club, based in Golden, breaks it down into three components: explosive movement, core strength and flexibility.

All these components can be practiced at home or in the gym through different movements and exercises.

Restivo likes workouts such as squat jumps, crunches and planks.

Cameron Davis, owner of RockStar Fitness in Castle Rock, recommends squat pulses, which consists of standing, placing the feet just outside hip length apart, pushing the hips back and moving into a seated position then pulsing in that position, he said. This can be done for 60 seconds to three minutes, depending how much an individual’s body can tolerate, he said.

“Ice skaters” are also good for preparing to ski, Davis said. To complete this exercise, one can do a one-legged jump with the opposing leg behind the body and the arms swaying accordingly, as if skating.

For snowboard-specific exercises, Davis prescribes the extension squat, which is like a regular squat but when the person stands up, he or she goes up on the toes to work the calves as well.

If a weight is available, he recommends goblet squats, which is a

regular squat while holding the weight at the chest. When standing back up, he suggests squeezing the glutes. This can be done 10 to 20 times, and it’s important to find a weight that feels challenging, he said.

Broc Thompson, the ski coach for Jeffco Public Schools’ alpine ski club, believes it is important to throw some balance and instability exercises into a workout. That means adding tools like Bosu or exercise balls into basic exercises like planks, lunges and crunches.

“Skiing is about reactive balance, you’re always dealing with a bunch of forces in a bunch of different directions,” Thompson said.

The main muscle groups the trainers suggested focusing on include glutes, hamstrings, middle back and core.

Outside of strength building, general aerobic exercises are also vital to avoid exhaustion on the hill.

One way to prepare for the fatigue that comes with skiing and snowboarding is to find a nearby hill and start walking up it a few times a week, Davis said.

Thompson believes the best course of action is to just stay in shape all year. Cross training with activities like tennis, hockey and cycling are his go-tos, he said.

“My feeling is the best plan is to stay active year-round so when the season changes it’s just a little adaptation,” he said, “and not full-on getting into shape for the first time of the year.”

Flexibility Outside of strength and aerobic exercises, it is also important to keep muscles loose by doing different stretches and mobility exercises, Davis said.

Before doing any workout, including hitting the slopes, Davis emphasizes the necessity of doing movementbased warm-ups such as high knees, butt kicks and just trying to move joints in all directions. This can help prevent injuries.

Another exercise is laying on the back with arms out and lifting the knees so that they’re at about a right angle then allowing them to fall to the right side then left side. This helps

loosen the back and allow for twisting while skiing or snowboarding.

Yoga is also a great way to keep up strength and mobile joints, Thompson and Restivo said.

Thompson, who is a stronger advocate of mobility exercises than muscle stretches, believes the hips and ankles are some of the most critical spots on the body to keep mobile for snow sports, he said. He recommends deep squats for hips and using a toe to “draw the alphabet” for ankle mobility, he said.

Nutrition All the trainers emphasized staying hydrated and making sure to fuel your body during long days on the mountain.

“One of my go-tos is my steel cut oatmeal with coconut oil in and maybe a protein shake on the side,” Davis said. “So you’re getting carbs, fats and protein.”

For snacks on the slopes he suggests peanut butter, power bars and fruit.

Listen to your body While it may be tempting to go all out on the first few days in the snow, Davis points out how important it is to listen to your body and work up little by little to avoid injury.

“Your body does give you warning signs,” he said. “Be really honest with yourself.”

His top advice for injury prevention?

“Check your ego at the door,” he said.

At the beginning of the alpine ski season, Thompson has his athletes start simple, he said.

“We start out doing basic drills on basic hills,” he said. “There’s so much you haven’t used in such a long time, so we definitely start slow.

Overall, the underlying practice that has worked for many skiers and snowboarders is to enjoy the sport and listen to their bodies.

“Especially for people who aren’t that much of a hardcore skier, I would say don’t get wrapped up in needing to be in the gym every single day,” Restivo said. “Have fun with it, vary your workouts…take care of your body, listen to your body.”

Olde Town shops transform into student art show 100 Denver area students submit to Arvada-based contest

L

ast weekend the businesses of Olde Town became a widespread, eclectic art gallery as 18 stores displayed student artwork for the Olde Town Arvada Student Art Show. The contest was an effort by the Business Improvement District and local businesses, which hung and placed artwork alongside their merchandise, creating a one-of-a-kind show for visiting spectators.

Taking place during the fall semester for the first time — the show previously occurred in the spring — the art show saw 100 Denver metro area students submit 200 works of art to be judged by representatives from the local art scene.

Students submitted independently of their schools, as opposed to previous shows, when students went through their schools to submit work.

Those works of art were then put on display Oct. 4-6, in shops throughout Olde Town.

Open to junior high and high school students, the contest awarded cash prizes for the first time this year, said Jamie Hollier, event organizer and owner of artisan jewelry gallery Balefire Goods in Olde Town.

“We got sponsors for the prize money because for a kid, the hardest thing is buying materials,” she said.

Represented among the art were paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and carvings — a wide variety of mediums, said judge Cori Anderson, arts and culture writer for 303 Magazine. “Some of these pieces are really exceptional,” she said.

At the RE/MAX Alliance office in Olde Town, judges Collin Parson, Cori Anderson and John-Claude Futrell observe artwork submitted to the Olde Town Arvada Student Art Show. Students from the Denver metro area ages 11 and up could submit work, which was then shown inside 18 Olde Town businesses.

Meet the CMHOF class of 2019

n its 40 years in existence, Swallow Hill music has given outlet to thousands’ musical ambitions, education and fandom through its classes, concerts and community outreach work. When one considers an impact that big on the metro area’s musical community, it’s no wonder the organization is being inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

The organization is joined by The Mother Folkers (a group of 21 female folk musicians) as well as Dick Weissman, a world-class musician, author and educator and Walt Conley, one of the founding fathers of Colorado’s folk scene in this year’s hall of fame inductee class.

“We’re beyond honored to be inducted and what an amazing group of inductees,” said Paul Lhevine, CEO of Swallow Hill. “It’s a wonderful recognition of Swallow Hill’s role in the community for all these years and an acknowledgement that we’ve added enormously to the creative class in the area.”

Presented by Comfort Dental, the induction ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Swallow Hill’s Central Presbyterian Church, 1660 Sherman St. in Denver, and also doubles as a celebration of Swallow Hill’s 40th anniversary. The evening will include performances by 20 current and former members of The Mother Folkers, Harry Tuft, Dick Weissman, a tribute to Walt Conley and more.

Tuft founded Swallow Hill in 1979 and in the years since, it’s grown into the second largest acoustic music school in the country. And while it’s largely known for as a school and concert venue/promoter (it brings in about 64,000 audience members to its 250 annual events) Lhevine has made community outreach a key priority.

“We have three major programs: COMING therapy proATTRACTIONS music gram, a K-12 program that provides interactive performances and an early childhood program that focuses on areas with high poverty rates,” he said. “This recognition is the pivot point that caps our first 40 years and Clarke Reader looks to the future.”

Previous inductees into the Colorado Hall of Fame include John Denver, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Glenn Miller and promoter Barry Fey. As musician and executive director of the hall of fame explained, highlighting the breadth of musical talent in Colorado is a key goal for the organization.

“With the hall of fame, we can bring greater knowledge about Colorado’s incredible musical heritage to a bigger audience,” he said. “Some of these people may not be OneRepublic or Nathaniel Rateliff, but we want to

recognize that the talent pool here is just breathtaking.”

Childhood dreams come true in museum exhibit Toys from collection and local residents’ homes speak of times that felt simpler

An entrance past giant building blocks leads to a collection of all sorts of toys and exhibit text to jog the visitor’s memory juices.

What was your favorite toy?

The Littleton Museum not only offers a farm with live animals, but has drawn on its extensive collection — and borrowed a few favorite toys from well-known Littleton residents. Curators have mounted an exhibit called “The Way We Played” that really offers adults a happy trip down Memory Lane, while stimulating the children who were visiting when I did to want to play with those toys in their own ways — right now!

A handsome, large log dollhouse stands just inside the entrance, made for a lucky girl named Lavonne Ames Axford, by a Mr. Axford (Dad? Grandad?). The table is set and other beautifully made furnishings, including a rocking chair, stand in the parlor of this home. No further word about who the lucky Miss Axford may have been — it would have been fun to know a bit more about where and when she enjoyed playing with this. Or could it have been made for a grown woman as a gift? There is no evidence of wear and tear on any of the immaculate furnishings placed within: a table, set with tiny items, a chair, carpet and fireplace.

To relieve itchy fingers which must badly want to touch everything shown in cases, wise designers have set up a space near the doorway with mystery items that one touches through a hole in a box. What can you tell by just touching an item? Is that a small fuzzy teddy, hidden from sight? And at another spot, the sense of smell is emulated …

Continue on to toy service stations with shiny metal autos and trucks, served by a small attendant, and find a miniature Main Street scene nearby, with a group of mini-citizens on the corner. Where are they going? What are they discussing?

Women learn about ways to improve their health at expo

Colorado Community Media event held at Belmar Women of all ages enjoyed a day of health, education and beauty during Colorado Community Media’s second annual Women’s Health and Beauty Expo on Oct. 5.

Along with Gold Sponsor Swedish Medical Center participating, the sold-out event featured more than 45 vendors at the Belmar Shopping District in Lakewood.

Cory Davis, specialty leasing manager, said Belmar is always proud to team up with CCM to provide women with this kind of opportunity.

“This is an outstanding event that inspires women to come together and support one another and educate themselves on self-care and health,” she said.

Davis said she enjoyed the wide variety of vendors this year, from the fashion reps to Karen Korona, a local entrepreneur who stayed busy throughout the day educating people on the value of CBG products — similar to those made with CBD — and the power of holistic healing.

Another local entrepreneur at the event was Dana Knowles of the young company Go Deep. Telling her own personal story, Knowles said after a hip issue with doctors she became

More than 100 science fiction, fantasy and horror authors, artists and other participants will speak and autograph books at the 51st annual MileHiCon literary convention Oct. 18-20 at the Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center, 7800 E. Tufts Ave, Denver.

A story within a story involving a lost dog

he panic can’t be described.

Your dog is missing. How did he get out? Where did she go? Most importantly, where is he now and how can you ever hope to find him? Do you run outside, call the neighbors, call her name? That panic is horrible, so be prepared by reading “Where the Lost Dogs Go” by Susannah Charleson.

The story sounds like a near-ending: because of her work with dogs and rescue groups, Susannah Charleson gets constant pleas to BOOKWORM save and foster dogs that are scheduled to die by euthanasia.

It’s heartbreaking and she does what she can, but on one hot Texas day, after receiving multiple messages about a filthy, smelly little mixed-somethingTerri breed that was doomed, Charleson Schlichenmeyer did a little more.

She didn’t need another dog; she already had several, including some that were on hospice care but this little waif seemed different. He wasn’t giving up, and neither was Charleson: she fetched the new “family member” and named him Ace. For Charleson, this was what she’d done all her life. Her parents had both been fierce animal advocates, and she grew up with pets they’d found and

ed that she’d carried on the efforts and in this case, they supported the idea of helping the little guy.

But Ace wasn’t like a lot of other strays.

He was loved once, says Charleson.

He was well-mannered, happy, housebroken, and enjoyed car rides. Once his health issues were addressed, he got along well with other dogs and with people. What had happened to

him that he’d ended up living in a culvert in a sketchy neighborhood?

While looking for Ace’s former owners, Charleson pondered that. Some dogs like to sneak out the door or under a fence for adventure. Others do it in fear. In any case, untold numbers of dogs go missing each year and, though there are ways to recover one that’s lost, some never return home again. It can happen to anyone.

Says Charleson: “Dogs don’t wander until they do.”

If you’re a pet lover, you know the panic you feel when your baby goes missing: it’s instant, helpless, urgent, and terrifying, all at once. “Where the Lost Dogs Go” can help make sure it doesn’t happen again.

But lost-dog-proofing advice isn’t all you’ll find here: author Susannah Charleson writes about her parents, who showed her compassion for animals and who couldn’t live with one another, but couldn’t live without one another, either. She includes her dog, Puzzle, in her tales, which will please fans of her other works. It’s kind of like having a book wrapped in a book wrapped in explanations for how rescue groups work and how readers can ensure their pets make it home if they’re ever lost.

That makes this story a valuable investment, one to read and save-incase. For Dog Moms, Cat Daddies, and pet sibs alike, if you don’t read “Where the Lost Dogs Go,” you’re missing out.

Colorado Refugee English as a Second Language Program: Teaches English to recently arrived refugees, who have fled war or persecution in their home country. In Colorado, refugees are from Afghanistan, Burma, Bhutan, Somalia, Iraq, Eritrea and D.R. Congo, among others.

Need: Volunteers to teach English. Tutoring takes place in the student’s home. Refugees live throughout Denver, but the largest concentrations are in Thornton, near 88th Avenue and Washington Street, and in east Denver/Aurora, near Colfax Avenue and Yosemite Street.

Other details: Tutors do not need to speak the student’s language. Most participants are homebound women and small children, adults who are disabled, and senior citizens.

Many are not literate in their first language, and remain isolated from American culture.

Pomona football leans on defense in league opener

LAKEWOOD — Pomona’s defense was definitely ready to open up conference play in the Class 5A Metro West League on Thursday, Oct. 3, at Jeffco Stadium.

The Panthers’ defense carried Pomona to a 23-0 shutout victory over Lakewood. Pomona — No. 8 in the latest CHSAANow.com Class 5A football standings — got a pair of defensive scores in the opening half, along with shutting out the Tigers to help the cause.

“We are picking up our speed and really starting to gel,” Pomona senior defensive lineman Kane Courtney said. “We are making some big plays.”

Courtney produced the first of the big defensive plays for the Panthers.

He got the scoring going with a sack of Lakewood quarterback Jason Duong for a safety with just over five minutes remaining before halftime.

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead.

“Honestly, we weren’t getting a fire lite,” said Courtney of the scoreless first quarter. “Someone had to set it off. I had to get us some points on the board. It was too long of a drought for us. We took it in our own hands on defense.”

Pomona senior Sanjay Strickland created more problems for the Tigers in the closing minutes of the second quarter. Strickland punched the ball out of Duong’s hands on a sack to force a fumble. Pomona junior linebacker AJ Zamora picked up the loose ball and ran it in from 10 yards out for a defensive score.

“That got us going,” Strickland said of the defensive touchdown. “The offense wasn’t clicking like they are supposed to, but defense was doing our thing.”

The Panthers’ offensive took advantage of Pomona’s defense giving it a short field to open the third quarter.

Pomona drove 30 yards for the first offensive score of the night. Sophomore Dominick Nichols capped off the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to make the score 16-0 early in the third quarter.

Nichols, who was pressed into running back duties due to injury, capped off the scoring with a 69-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.

“Dominick did a great job. He hasn’t practice at running back except for two days this whole year,” Pomona coach Jay Madden said. “Now we have a two-headed monster back there and we can put Jack (Pospisil) back at wide receiver.”

Madden said he hopes to have starting quarterback Brady Ritzmann back full-time next week, along with junior running back Ben Cruz to help out the

offense.

“We are just waiting for the offense to get healthy,” Strickland said. “For right now, we’ll just do everything to help us win.”

In what will be one of the toughest conference that currently features three ranked teams in the CHSAANow.com 5A football poll — No. 1 Columbine, No. Ralston Valley and No. 8 Pomona — the Panthers quickly ascended to the top of the league standings with the victory.

Pomona (3-3, 1-0 in league) has played its typical challenging nonleague schedule. The Panthers losses have come against No. 2 Cherry Creek, No. 3 Valor Christian and No. 6 Regis Jesuit. The Bruins, Eagles and Raiders had a combined 14-1 recording heading into this week.

“We are tired of losing,” Strickland said. “We are going to keep winning.”

“I’m still not comfortable,” Herbers said of the Demons’ 1-game lead over D’Evelyn and Wheat Ridge last Thursday with three league games left. “We can lose that top spot just as quickly as we gained it. It’s beautiful to see 4A Jeffco as strong as it is right now. It makes it fun.”

Golden sophomore Caitlyn Stevens was a big part in making the trip to D’Evelyn fun. The Demons’ designated hitter belted a 2-run home run over the fence in left field in the top of the second inning for the lone run-producing hit of the game.

“I just went up there and focused on the ball,” Stevens said of long blast. “I felt like it was a good hit, but I didn’t know what would happen with it.”

What happened was the ball skipped off the top of the fence to drive in senior Haley Prey to grab a 2-0 lead for the Demons. Prey was hit by a pitch to start out the inning.

“I didn’t think it would go out,” Herbers said of the home run by Stevens.

“Not at 225 (feet) and the wind blowing in from left field. She really got into it.”

Herbers said Stevens had been working hard on her swing lately. It was her second home run in the past three games.

Golden senior Emma Graham pitched the complete-game shutout.

Graham had to dance her way out of jams in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to keep D’Evelyn (13-8, 5-3) at bay.

Graham finished the game in style striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh inning after a lead-off single by D’Evelyn sophomore Mia Riebe.

“It’s always my goal to strike people out, but you can’t always do it all,” Graham said when asked about striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Graham finished with nine strikeouts.

“Emma delivered,” Herbers said.

“She pitched deep in some counts and made it interesting. Defense still made the plays too.”

D’Evelyn sophomore pitcher Avery Garbarek was very impressive too.

Garbarek allowed just the four hits while striking out five against the hot hitting Demons. It was the lowest scoring output for Golden on the season.

“She (Garbarek) did a fantastic job,” Porreco said of his sophomore pitcher.

“After that home run she really emotionally settled in and came back.

She is growing. That was impressive against Golden.”

Golden finishes league play against Standley Lake on Tuesday, after press deadline, before hosting D’Evelyn in its regular-season finale Oct. 10.
