Head Start Family Support Team Coordinator for Lakewood I grew up in the eastern plains of Colorado, and I graduated from Arapahoe High School. I’ve lived all over Colorado including in Limon, Pueblo and the Arkansas Valley.

I went to California and started taking classes at California State University, San Bernardino.

One day I was in class, and this guy came in saying they were starting a brand-new masters of social work program. It caught my ear, so I decided to apply, and that was that.

I graduated from the first masters of social works class at California State University, San Bernardino.

I worked with chronic and mentally ill adults before I found Head Start 26 years ago. I’ve been with Lakewood’s Head Start program for 15 years.

A few years ago, I moved to Lakewood. I like living in the city. It has more of a small town feel than Aurora or Denver.

I have one son, two “bonus children” and four grandchildren. We do a lot of family stuff. We like to

drive and go places, specifically to the plains, have picnics and that kind of stuff. I like to read, and even though I don’t like to say it nowadays, I am a Broncos fan.

A passion for helping others At Head Start, I am the family support team coordinator. The best part of my job is I get to work directly with families. I guess you can say it’s my passion.

We provide early child development and family support services.

That involves supporting parents as the primary caregiver and teacher of their children, helping families reach personal goals, helping children grow and develop, home visits where we work with parents and their children, and more.

Usually I work with young families with young children. It feels like you’re making a little bit of a difference. We work with a vulnerable population and provide resources like housing, food banks, employment, schooling, child programs and more.

We really are assisting families in getting their children ready for school — but you can’t have your child ready to go to school unless parents are healthy.

Election season is right around the corner, and races for positions in Lakewood’s government are heating up.

Homelessness, police protection and Lakewood’s growth cap were among the topics discussed as Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul and City Councilmember Ramey Johnson took turns fielding questions from residents at a Ward 3 meeting — a centrally located portion of the city, including Belmar.

The two mayoral candidates addressed a crowd of dozens at Phillips United Methodist Church on Sept. 28.

Mayoral rematch In 2015, Paul beat Johnson for mayor by less than 1%. He talked about things the city has accomplished during his time as mayor, including winning an All-America City Award in 2016 and the creation of The Council to End Hunger.

The criteria for the award from the National Civic League includes “impact, inclusiveness, public engagement and the use of collaborative problem-solving strategies,” according to the National Civic League’s website.

Paul created The Council to End Hunger in Lakewood last year, a coalition of faith groups, Jeffco Schools, The Action Center, Hunger Free Colorado, Jeffco Public Health, service organizations and others that work to fight hunger issues in the city.

“My mom said take time to enjoy this world, but change the ugliness.

Work hard to change the ugliness, and that’s been my task, and that’s what I’m here to do,” Paul told the crowd.

Johnson said one of her core values is public safety. She says the city’s crime and traffic congestion has risen dramatically due to population growth. Johnson noted that if she is elected mayor, her administration will be proactive and will have ongoing meetings with Lakewood Police and the court system.

“We all want the same things here.

We want leadership that promotes healthy relationships in our communities,” said Johnson at the meeting.

“We want people that will have an equal seat at the table to help define what your community vision is. You should not be left out.”

Homelessness When talking about the homeless, Paul brought up Lakewood Police’s Community Action Team, a group that works with the homeless and people with mental illness conditions.

The team is also responsible for verifying sex offender compliance. He said the city is looking at changing some of its laws to allow those experiencing homelessness to sleep in churches when it gets cold — something that is already happening in the city.

Johnson said homelessness is a complex issue to tackle. She said people who are homeless sleep in Lakewood public parks, causing families to stray from taking their children. If elected, Johnson wants to meet with Lakewood Police to learn what kind of policy changes would be helpful to address the issue.

With a high population, police are overwhelmed, said Johnson when asked about police protection. She said Lakewood police are good at their jobs, but response time to calls were becoming too long.

Paul said the 2018 election, where Lakewood residents voted in favor of the city lifting Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) limits, allowed for the city to put extra officers on the streets.

The ballot question allocated $12.5 million to go toward additional police officers, vehicles and other equipment, park improvements and improvements to things like sidewalks, traffic signals and turn lanes.

dates were asked what their vision is for the city now that the measure is law.

Johnson said the city needs to implement the law and feels that it is being “dragged around a little bit.”

“There was a very substantial yes vote. We want this city to be looking at honest, responsible growth,” said Johnson.

“This 200 needs to be implemented the way the people intended it to be,” she added.

Paul said the city will honor Question 200, and it is figuring out what that looks like.

Jeffco PTA hosts forum for four candidates in two races

Sept. 25 saw school board candidates take to the stage in Lakewood High School’s auditorium as the Jeffco PTA hosted its candidate forum for the 2019 election.

The forum followed Superintendent Jason Glass’ State of the District address, in which he outlined reasons to celebrate — the district has seen increased funding and support from the community — and also goals for the new candidates to keep in mind, such as boosting overall enrollment and student performance on standardized tests.

Two of five seats on the district’s Board of Education are open this year, and two candidates have entered each race.

With all four candidates having never served on the board before, the Q&A forum represented an opportunity for residents to hear what each will prioritize if elected.

District 3 The two candidates running for District 3 are Rob Applegate, who serves as a board member for several education organizations including the Colorado Military Academy; and Stephanie Schooley, executive director or education nonprofit Campus Compact of the Mountain West.

When asked about the budget, candidates agreed that the district should increase teacher compensation. Schooley added that she would oppose a shift to a pay-for-performance model, in which teacher salaries would depend on student test performance and other such factors.

To encourage further public funding, which could help increase

teacher salaries, the candidates proposed different approaches.

“The district does a very good job of showing what money is spent on,” Applegate said, however, “the Board needs to show the money is being effectively used.” The board should provide the public with proof that programs have a direct impact on student success, he said.

Schooley suggested increasing communication around what students are doing with what they’ve learned. “We need to share the narrative of what well-educated children do for the community when they walk out of our schools,” she said.

Both candidates said they support the district’s current policy to allow families to choice-enroll students into schools that are not the family’s neighborhood school. For Applegate, this also means creating programs to ensure all families, particularly low-income families and those living in rural areas, have access to the same amount of choices.

The discussion then moved to how the district can better prepare Jeffco students who will not graduate college — roughly 75% of students, according to the Jeffco PTA — so that they can still pursue careers.

Applegate said he would advocate for programming that sees schools “team up with other industries in Colorado” — for example, an airline may send personnel to speak about a career in aviation, as United Airlines did in his son’s preschool class, Applegate said.

Schooley recommended connecting students with opportunities in the nonprofit community. She also suggested further applying Jeffco Generations, the district’s strategic plan, which aims to teach children key skills that could apply to any career.

their thoughts about themselves as students,” she said.

The candidates agreed that the district should not arm teachers.

Currently, Jeffco does not arm educators with concealed weapons, nor does it have plans to do so, Glass said.

District 4 In District 4, it’s a race between Joan Chávez-Lee, a former Jeffco teacher and principal, and Susan Miller, who has served on district committees and as president of the Wheat Ridge High School PTSA. Alongside the District 3 candidates, Chávez-Lee and Miller oppose arming educators, they said.

District 4 candidates also discussed the budget, with Chávez-Lee suggesting school communities would have more faith in the district, and be more inclined to approve public funding, if the schools themselves knew exactly how budget decisions impact them.

Many principals are not ever told what district decisions mean for them, she said; she advocated for heightened communication on the topic.

For Miller, the answer is in expanding the flexibility of the budget. While the district has approximately a $1 billion budget, the majority is not discussed by the

“We need to look at a $1 billion budget every year,” she said. She also suggested allowing more decisions to be made at the local level by relying more heavily on StudentBased Budgeting (SBB), which lets individual schools make more funding choices.

While both support increasing teacher compensation, they gave different answers on whether the district should use pay-forperformance. Chávez-Lee said the method “can be time-consuming

and expensive to develop,” and “counter-intuitive,” as pay cuts can decrease teacher motivation instead of increase it.

But Miller said she could see pros and cons; she would like to explore how “some pool of money (could) be available for those teachers” who promote performance in their schools, she said. However, she opposed cutting teacher pay based on performance.

On equity, the candidates suggested new programming to ensure families have access to both the opportunities and resources they

need.

Miller said she plans to research successful examples of such programs across the country, then develop a similar model that could be feasible for Jeffco.

Chávez-Lee suggested the district focus more on supporting parents as well as children, potentially by providing resources, such as food, on-site at schools.

“At Molholm,” where Chávez-Lee was principal, she said, “we had a food bank on site. The school itself became a community hub and a safe place.”

efferson County voters will have to make a couple of decisions concerning the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) this November.

One is Colorado Proposition CC. This ballot question will ask if the state should be allowed to retain excess revenue, which it is currently required to refund under TABOR, to go to transportation and education.

Specific to Jefferson County, all of the county’s voters will be deciding on ballot measure 1A. Here are the details on Jeffco 1A.

Why are we being asked to vote on this now?

Earlier this year, the county identified that it was facing a financial challenge for the year 2020, attributing it to the need to keep up with an increasing demand for services because of population growth.

About $16.1 million is the amount the county identified that it lacked for balanced 2020 budget and to maintain an appropriate reserve fund next year.

To achieve that amount, the county proposed a seven percent budget reduction in 2020 for all county offices, departments and divisions whose budget is impacted by the general fund.

The general fund is the county’s principle operating fund that is financed primarily by property taxes. There are 15 departments funded by the general fund.

Rather than budget cuts, de-brucing the county’s TABOR limits came up as a possible solution to the county’s financial challenges. On July 23 the Jefferson County commissioners — Casey Tighe, Leslie Dahlkemper and Libby Szabo — unanimously approved putting the Jeffco 1A question on the November 2019 ballot.

What does the county’s mill levy have to do with Jeffco 1A? The mill levy is the tax rate applied to the assessed value of a property. One mill equals one dollar per $1,000 dollars of assessed property value.

Jefferson County is currently authorized to collect a maximum mill levy of 21.478.

If Jeffco 1A passes, the measure’s ballot language states that $16.1 million above the current TABOR cap will be collected the first year. This is the amount that the county identified it needs to avoid budget cuts in 2020.

In the years 2020-2026, Jeffco 1A would allow the county to collect the full amount of its authorized county mill levy.

Argument for a yes vote on Jeffco 1A: Beginning in 2016, the county starting hitting the TABOR cap each year, said Mary O’Neil, the county’s director of strategy, planning and analysis. But for the 15 years prior, the county made voluntary mill levy reductions, O’Neil added, as a sign of fiscal stewardship.

A yes vote would not give the county the ability to raise taxes, so much as just keep the revenue that has already been approved.

Argument for a no vote on Jeffco 1A: The ballot language does not clearly state that Jeffco 1A will let the county raise the tax bills of its residents, said Natalie Menten, volunteer coordinator for the grassroots organization, No Jeffco Tax Hike.

Affordable housing is already a challenge, Menten said, and Jeffco 1A would make housing more expensive. She added that businesses that have to pay more taxes on their property will reflect onto consumers, contributing to a higher cost of living.

How will the money be spent if Jeffco 1A passes?

Should Jeffco 1A pass, the money would be used to fund the cost of county government and to maintain the county services currently provided. According to the ballot measure’s language, all spending would be reviewed and decided on by the Board of County Commissioners as part of the annual budget process.

The services bullet pointed in Jeffco 1A’s language are as follows: Providing for the safety of the public including maintaining adequate jail beds, staffing the District Attorney’s Office, adequate patrol personnel, and wildfire mitigation; Maintaining roads, bridges and other new transportation improvements; Preserving public facilities and infrastructure including building security and maintenance; and Providing services traditionally offered by Jefferson County and other Colorado county governments and statutorily required services.

Argument for a yes vote on Jeffco 1A: The Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office notes that in order to achieve a seven percent reduction to its 2020 budget, it would have to cut its budget by $6.7 million. This means, Sheriff Jeff Shrader said, an entire floor of the jail would have to be shut down which would lead to jail beds being reduced, thus limiting the amount of offenders the jail would be able to house.

“The sheriff is not the only public safety official impacted by this,” Shrader said to Golden City Council during the general public comment period on Sept. 12. “My concern is that (the proposed budget cuts) will affect the entirety of Jefferson County, in terms of the quality of life that we have.”

Are there expiration dates for Jeffco 1A? Jefferson County commissioners discussed in length an expiration — or sunset — on the initiative but settled on a sunset after seven years.

This means, should Jeffco 1A pass, the county could keep and spend or reserve all revenue, regardless of revenue type, that it collects in the years 2020 to 2026.

A second portion of Jeffco 1A says that beginning in 2027, only property taxes would be subject to the TABOR cap. The county could keep revenue from grants, fines, interest and fees, up to the Excess Local Revenue Cap.

Lakewood Police sued by man after K-9 incident

A Lakewood man has sued the Lakewood Police Department after being attacked by a police dog at his home in September of 2018.

Spencer Erickson, who was 25 at the time of the incident, was attacked by a K-9 named Finn, a Belgian malinois breed, who was released by officers at his apartment, located at the 7300 block of West Hampden Avenue, the lawsuit says.

If the dog’s teeth had dug millimeters deeper into his neck, Erickson would’ve died, the lawsuit alleges. Additionally, Erickson says the officers had no justification for sending an

unsupervised, known dangerous dog to find and apprehend him.

“An incident like this was the natural consequence of Lakewood’s decision. What that dog did to Mr. Erickson is horrifying,” said Adam Frank, the lawyer representing Erickson.

On Sept. 21, 2018, Erickson’s roommate Drew McGuire called Lakewood Police alleging property damage, saying Erickson made a hole in the attic of the Lakewood apartment and was possibly in the crawlspace. McGuire told police Erickson drank vodka and may have used marijuana. She never reported any violent behavior or threats from Erickson, and he doesn’t have a violent past, the lawsuit reads.

Erickson had three outstanding arrest warrants, including failure to appear for a case involving possession of a controlled substance, failure to appear for a case involving criminal mischief and failure to comply in a driving under the influence case.

Frank described the relationship between Erickson and McGuire as “mildly contentious” and roommates who disagreed over “typical roommate stuff.”

A team of six officers responded to McGuire and attempted to call and text Erickson’s phone, telling him to come out of the apartment with his hands up. If he failed to do so, police warned him they would bring the dog into his apartment, the lawsuit says.

After not hearing a response or seeing any movement from the apartment, police unleashed the dog into the apartment. After a search, the dog found and attacked Erickson.

The lawsuit claims that Erickson had been asleep at the time of the attack. The suit goes on to say that the neck wounds cause by Finn permanently damaged his vocal cords.

Erickson was hospitalized following the incident, and later pleaded guilty to criminal mischief for damaging the apartment and was sentenced to probation.

The dog has a violent history, the lawsuit says. News reports from 2014 detail how Finn bit and injured Lake-

Finn remains on the force today, according to John Romero, a spokesperson for Lakewood Police.

The Lakewood Police Department’s K-9 unit consists of three dogs. Aside from forceful detainment work, K-9s help search for missing people, or fugitives and can detect narcotics, or weapons.

“Lakewood knew that (the dog) bit people when he wasn’t supposed to in ways that caused massive damage, and they decided to keep using him,” said Frank.

In seeking restitution Erickson says he continues to suffer from pain, injuries, trauma, trouble sleeping, nightmares and a fear of dogs. He was also diagnosed with PTSD as a result from the incident, according to the lawsuit.

After the incident, Erickson was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood. At the hospital, Baggs details Erickson yelling slurs and profanity at hospital staff who were treating his injuries. Erickson attempted to remove his bandages and monitoring equipment, prompting hospital staff to restrain him to his hospital bed using cloth straps.

Lakewood Police’s view Romero said the department can’t comment on an ongoing lawsuit. He did, however, provide police reports from the incident.

The reports read similar to that of the lawsuit, except details of the attack on Erickson. According to the report from Lakewood Police Agent Edward Baggs, an agent at the scene, he heard Lakewood Police Agent Ryan O’Hayre yelling at Erickson, telling him to “stop fighting the police dog.”

K-9 protocols According to the Lakewood Police’s policy and procedure for its K-9 program, deployment of a Lakewood dog by its handler can be considered use of force, depending on the circumstance. When deciding whether to release a dog, the handler must determine if it’s reasonable to do so. Dogs can be released depending on the severity of the crime, if a suspect poses a threat to the safety of police or citizens and if a suspect is actively resisting arrest, or attempting to evade arrest by flight.

Before releasing the dog, the handler must consider information like the suspect’s perceived age, the nature of the suspected offense, any potential danger to the public and officer(s) at the scene if the dog is released, any unnecessary risk to the safety of the dog and the degree of resistance or threatened resistance the suspect has shown.

Three-time summer reading champion shares secrets to success Library program sees increased participation in fifth annual contest

Jefferson County Public Library’s Summer Reading program is nothing new.

But every year, there’s something different to look forward to, said marketing manager Cindy Matthews - whether it’s more participants, livelier competition or the endless opportunities for residents to log reading minutes.

“We include audio books, Facebook, Twitter, fan fiction,” she said.

“We’re raising awareness of how much you read.”

In keeping with its tradition started in 2015, the program included a reading competition between schools. The contest measures the percentage of a school’s students who meet the reading-minute goal for their age group.

This year’s winning schools were Adams Elementary Preschool with a 93% finisher rate; Glennon Heights Elementary with a 76% rate; Bell Middle School with a 17% rate; Arvada High School with a 13% rate; and Addenbrooke Classical Academy with a 38% rate. Bell

THIS YEAR’S WINNERS Starting in 2015, Jefferson County Public Library has held a competition among schools during its annual summer reading program. The competition is divided into five categories: pre-school, elementary, middle school, high school and special options or charter schools.

To win, schools must boast the highest percentage of enrolled students who meet the reading requirement, which was at least eight or 16 hours, depending on a participant’s age.

This year’s winners not only saw the following participation, but logged tens of thousands of reading minutes: Adams Elementary Preschool - Percentage: 93% Minutes read: 36,418 Glennon Heights Elementary - Percentage: 75.82% Minutes read: 37,611 Bell Middle School - Percentage: 16.95% Minutes read: 274,606 Arvada High School - Percentage: 13.42% Minutes read: 177,650 Addenbrooke Classical Academy - Percentage: 38.34% Minutes read: 175,084 Source - Jefferson County Public Library and Addenbrooke were both repeat champions, having won the competition three times each.

up the school’s strong summer reading streak, she said. As the summer drew closer, she created a Google Classroom page for the contest and promoted the competition during the school’s morning announcements.

Additionally, the school brought in teen services librarian Brittany Dolezal from the Golden Library to speak on the program, and providing Chromebooks to help students register.

All this has been to help students combat the so-called summer slide — where children lose reading proficiency when they do not read over summer. Bell staff has always been avid about helping their students avoid that setback, DeAndrea said.

But, she added, it’s not just about promoting what’s good for kids. It’s also about promoting what’s fun.

“There’s a world in books that kids can escape to,” she said. “Summer can get very long, but reading can shorten those summers.”

Additionally, Bell’s partnership with the library ensures students have a wide variety of options at a time when “we don’t have a great number of books per student in our (school) library,” Schlosser said. “I knew I would need to work with Jefferson County Public Library. It’s an indispensable partnership.”

The partnership especially serves the school’s low-income students, some of whom may not have books at home, she said.

“Getting those kids to read and connecting them with their library is beneficial,” she said. “We are so grateful to have the grand prize come back to us, and to have the partnership we’ve had.”

The program gives Jeffco students with disabilities a chance to learn to play and compete in sports. Jeffco Adapted Athletics holds an event each month that focuses on particular sport.

What is your personal code of conduct?

I

jaywalk. I return shopping carts to the store. I speed. I stop for stop signs on my bike. I wear white after Labor Day. I call – or at least text – people ALCHEMY on their birthdays (sometimes belated).

This is part of the authentic me, part of my personal code of values and morals.

And as I contemplate my own birthday this week, I’m reflecting on recent discussions that came about Andrea Doray because of a TV commercial for an auto maker.

Perhaps you’ve seen it … a young

The most probable scenario for me, though, is the one that played out in the ad. Just as I am ready to make my break, the green light flashes and solves my dilemma.

In our conversations, however, I’m affectionately challenged for this straight-arrow stance. What if the law – or the rule or the social convention – doesn’t make sense in a given situation, they ask … would I then break the law?

Okay, here I must admit that my likely wait at this stoplight is based more on the possibility that I might get caught, than on any reverence for the law itself … which, by the way, is also foremost in my mind when I jaywalk and, especially, when I speed.

On one hand, I am pretty much law abiding – jaywalking and speeding notwithstanding. On the other hand, at a red light on a deserted road in the dead of night, I might go through the light.

was listening to a little sports talk radio last week, as I am wont to do, and something struck me. One of the things the fellas — three of them — were talking about was the imperative for a football team to create chaos in their opponents. Unless you’re the Broncos HITTING of the late 90’s, who could line up, tell the HOME other team “here’s what’s coming,” and then beat them anyway, you have to do something to cause your opponent confusion. Then operate in the spaces left by the confusion.

That’s how winning football is played.

It’s a rare person who thrives in unstable conditions. For instance, did you know that, adjusted for inflation and on a per-capita basis, more millionaires were created during the Great Depression than at any other time period in American history? The people who recognized the collapse of certain structures as an opportunity thrived; the rest, not so much.

And it’s even playing out that way in politics. I have a difficult time believing our President is truly the undisciplined, angry 12-year old he so often comes across as. His entire life, he has embraced a certain element of chaos, and thrived within it. That’s why the multiple bankruptcies, the multiple marriages, the subsequent multiple grand achievements … It’s almost as if he manipulates his world to fall into a state of chaos, because

‘Cathartic’ rage rooms welcome customers to break objects, relieve stress

The business — which just opened near the start of September — sees upbeat events such as bachelorette parties, birthdays, corporate events and couples’ date nights, but it’s often a way

illiam Shakespeare once wisely observed that the course of true love never did run smooth, but legendary playwright Neil Simon knew that didn’t mean the bumpy road couldn’t be filled with laughs. Case in point, his 1968 trilogy of love stories — “Plaza Suite.”

The show provides a glimpse at three different couples, each with their own stories, who all stay at the same suite at New York’s Plaza Hotel at different times. Some of the couples are funny, others bittersweet, but all human in the way only Simon can create.

COMING “All three have ATTRACTIONS their own style, but they’re all quintessentially Simon,” said actor Kate Gleason.

“You can laugh and be moved in his shows, because Simon is a master of dramedy.”

Clarke Reader Gleason is joined by Gareth Saxe in playing all three couples in “Plaza Suite” at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd. in Arvada, from Oct. 4 through Nov. 10. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, 1 p.m. on Wednesday and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Each of the three acts is essentially its own mini-play. The first features Sam and Karen Nash, a married couple returning to their honeymoon suite to try and bring a little romance back to the relationship. The second act is about movie producer Jesse and his high school love, Muriel. In the final act, married couple Roy and Norma are at the Plaza to celebrate their daughter’s wedding.

“Simon creates these very different characters, but doesn’t lose the humans in the process,” Saxe said. “The show is a great offering because it showcases all of Simon’s gifts and what he is able to do as a dramatist.”

Having to play three distinct characters in the same show can certainly be a challenge, but both Gleason and Saxe say they have thoroughly enjoyed getting to find the life in the characters. And while Simon is rightly recognized for his comedic chops, there are certainly moments of real humanity to be found.

“There’s romance in all three, but there is some real bite (to the writing), and broken people, especially in the first act,” Gleason said.

“People will experience humor and love and bittersweet relationships.”

It’s a phenomenon that may have become popular in Japan in 2008, according to national news outlets.

Since then, rage rooms have spread to countries worldwide, including to many cities in the United States.

Drew Neilson, an owner and founder of Smash It Breakroom, went to a rage room in Australia. As he waited for one to come to Denver, he and co-founder Dustin Gagne decided to make it themselves.

that Shawn Worthy, a professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver, echoed.

General frustration arising from lack of upward economic mobility in the country could play into that, said Worthy, a professor of human services with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.

“I think particularly our youth, young people, don’t have a lot of outlets,” said Worthy, adding that traditional outlets for emotions from generations past may be less common. “They spend lots of time on video games and technology, where maybe past generations might have been playing sports outdoors, where you would have been able to demonstrate those urges in an acceptable way.”

Taking out frustration by breaking objects can be viewed as an example of a coping mechanism called sublimation, Worthy said.

“Sublimation means taking a socially unacceptable impulse and using that impulse in a more socially acceptable way,” Worthy said. It’s similar to “someone going to a boxing

“My wife’s a teacher, and some of our friends are teachers,” said Malache, who lives in Castle Rock. “They have stressful jobs, and they don’t always get the recognition.”

At another establishment with a rage room — Axe Whooping, an axthrowing location — stressors take a front seat, too. People can write out their frustrations in chalk on the wall before letting them out, said Curtis Roundtree, the business’s owner and co-founder.

“A lot of people have said it’s really cathartic,” Roundtree said of the rage room. His business at 437 N. Broadway has been open for axthrowing for about two months, and its rage room has been open for a month.

Smash It Breakroom, at 790 W. Evans Ave., offers a one-person session of 20 minutes for $45 and a twoperson session for 20 minutes for $86.

Other times, and group outings, are available at other prices.

For Malache, rage rooms — much like Denver’s “cat cafe” — are another out-of-the-box attraction.

“I like seeking out these weird things to do, especially in Denver because there are these unorthodox things you can do,” Malache said.

“I think that’s what makes the city special.”

Citizenship ceremony is Colorado’s largest in decade Nearly 200 people from 61 countries are naturalized at event

The first thing Hadeel Mati did when she officially became a naturalized citizen of the United States was register to vote.

“I felt like after 10 years in this country I have the right to say what I think,” Mati said.

The Iraqi native came to the U.S. by way of the United Kingdom and married her husband. They both live in Arvada now.

Mati was one of 194 people who became naturalized U.S. citizens Sept.

25 at Centennial Center Park, which is near the Centennial office for the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. In all, 61 countries were represented. It was the largest USCIS naturalization ceremony in Colorado since 2009, according to USCIS public affairs officials. Kristi Goldinger, the district director for the USCIS Denver Field Operations Directorate, announced the office will have naturalized close to 13,000 U.S. citizens in 2019.

Lockheed wins contract for moon capsules Orion spacecraft, developed at Littleton plant, will take astronauts to moon and beyond

The spacecraft that could return astronauts to the moon got one step closer to liftoff in September, as NASA announced it finalized a contract to order up to 12 Orion space capsules from aerospace giant Lockheed Martin.

Littleton-area engineers are the primary group developing Orion, said Lockheed spokesman Gary Napier.

“That development work will continue for a few more years even though the production contract was just awarded,” Napier said. “Once we’re fully underway with production of Orion, we will still have the primary engineering support for Orion and each of its individual missions here in the Denver area.”

The Orion spacecraft looks similar to the bell-shaped capsules that took astronauts to the moon in the 1960s and 1970s, according to NASA. Development of the program began in the mid-2000s as the Space Shuttle program was being phased out. Much of the spacecraft’s engineering, design

NASA has ordered three Orion spacecraft for upcoming Artemis missions for $2.7 billion, according to a news release. The agency plans to order another three in 2022 for $1.9 billion, and has the ability to order six more for future missions.

Lockheed officials said they’re proud of the new capsule, and excited to see where it will go.

“It’s a spaceship like none other,” said Mike Hawes, Lockheed’s Orion program manager, in a statement.

“We’ve designed it to do things no other spacecraft can do, go to places no astronaut has been, and take us into a new era of human deep space exploration.”

No more playing ‘the parking game’ Jeffco Open Space partners with Lot Spot to provide real-time parking information at five of its parks

Hunter Klein is looking forward to the day that he doesn’t have to play what he calls “the parking game” when he visits Jefferson County Open Space parks.

Klein of Golden enjoys climbing and caving, and, for Klein, usually those excursions include meeting up with a group of friends at a pre-planned spot.

However, the parking for those spots are often full by the time everyone in the group gets there, Klein said.

The app “will help us plan better,” Klein said.

The app that Klein refers to is newly offered by Jeffco Open Space through a partnership with Colorado Springs’ Lot Spot. What the Lot Spot app does is provide real-time information to Jeffco Open Space park visitors. The app is available for free for both Android and Apple.

“We understand that we may be parking challenged at a few of our trailheads,” said Mary Ann Bonnell, manager of visitor services for Jeffco Open Space, during her presentation

When using the app, park visitors can immediately find out how many parking spots are available at that given time of day. In addition, it allows users to search for other nearby parks, should the parking lot at the park they were planning on visiting happens to be full, said Matt Robbins, community connections manager for Jeffco Open Space.

“What we’re really trying to do is educate (and) that begins before they even get here,” Robbins said. “We don’t want people parking illegally or dangerously. We prefer they plan ahead, and we think this tool will help with that.”

Currently in beta testing, the app is available for seven parking lots at five Open Space parks — Mount Galbraith, White Ranch, Mount Falcon, Lair o’ the Bear and Alderfer/Three Sisters.

“We’ll continue to listen to feedback,” Robbins said, “and make sure it’s working properly.”

The equipment that sends the information is a solar-powered camera mounted on a pole that counts the number of vehicles that enter and leave the park’s lot.

In addition to providing real-time information on the availability of parking spaces, the app also allows park visitors to report a variety of errors, Robbins said. For example, if a person arrives to an Open Space park, and the app had inaccurately counted the number of spaces available, a person can report the wrong information

and the app will autocorrect. There are also options to report illegal parking, a vehicle break-in and even heavy traffic or an accident on the commute to the park, Robbins said.

On the staff side, the app will help Open Space with gathering long-term analytics, Bonnell said.

“It helps us understand, do we need a bigger lot,” she said, “or do we need to just encourage people to spread out their visiting hours. If this lot stays busy all the time, it may mean we need more spaces overall.”

The app can also help staff with enforcement in the parks, Robbins said. Most of the parks open one hour before sunrise and close one hour after sunset. So, for example, perhaps the camera detects a car parked in the lot in the middle of the night, Robbins said. The app would help staff become aware that there is vehicle in the lot afterhours, and staff could respond appropriately, such as sending a ranger out to investigate.

And it doesn’t necessarily always mean the car is parked there because of illegal activity, Robbins added. It could be an emergency and the person found themselves in an area that had no cell service to make a 911 call.

“This is great information — not just for our visitors but also for us,” Bonnell said. “Nobody else is doing this in their parks. We’re the first ones to try it. (And) we’re very excited about this innovation and trying this technology out.”

Green Mountain football gets bounce-back win over Standley Lake

LAKEWOOD — It took a less than 30 seconds to turn a one-score game into a 17-point lead for the Green Mountain football team Sept. 27 at Trailblazer Stadium.

A late first-half field goal by junior Nathan Hunsinger and a 40-yard touchdown run by Green Mountain senior quarterback Trey Towndrown on the opening play from scrimmage in the third quarter gave the Rams all the push they needed.

“We always try to focus on getting points at the end of the half and then getting the ball back. Bill Belichick calls it the magic eight minutes,” Green Mountain coach Jesse German said after the Rams’ 36-13 victory over Standley Lake. “That was huge momentum deal for us.”

An interception in the final minute of the first half by junior Allen Ortiz set up the big 33-yard field goal by Hunsinger in the final seconds before halftime to put Green Mountain — ranked No. 6 in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com football poll — ahead 10-0 going into the locker room.

“I was just reading my keys,” Ortiz said of the interception with less than a minute to play in the first half.

“I saw the receiver go out. It was an easy pick. We had run that a thousand times in practice. It was awesome.”

“We were slow, but we knew we would blow up soon,” Towndrow said of the majority of the first half. “Third quarter we came out with the right mindset of pulling this game away.”

Towndrow had touchdown runs of 40, 3 and 19 yards after halftime.

He also had a 44-yard scoring pass to junior Austin Peterson for the lone touchdown in the first half.

“He (Towndrow) can score from anywhere,” German said of his talented quarterback. “The linemen did a good job getting hats-on-hats for him. He is that game-changer. We are blessed to have them.”

quarter to help the Rams amass a 36-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.

German also pointed out the key goal-line stand his defense had in the first half. Standley Lake had a long 12-play drive and had third-down and goal at about the 1-foot line. However, a penalty and then a failed field goal attempt that turned into a pass attempt on fourth down kept the Gators off the scoreboard.

Standley Lake (1-3 record) did prevent the shutout with a defensive touchdown on a pick-6 by junior Pete Biller midway through the fourth quarter. The Gators also added a late

touchdown run, but Green Mountain (3-1) came away with the win over the Class 4A squad from Westminster.

“We definitely came into this game with a different mindset from last week,” Ortiz said referring to the 19-15 road loss to No. 8 Lutheran last week. “We had that bitter taste in our mouths. We want to come out and show where we are at. We had one of our best weeks of practice.”

Lakewood softball comes up short against Chatfield

LITTLETON — Sept. 28 was a mustwin situation if Chatfield had any hope of hanging a 2019 Class 5A Jeffco League softball championship banner in its gym.

“We’ve been in a bit of a funk, but they are fighting and clawing,” Chatfield coach Jen Lazzeri said after the Chargers ended a 2-game losing streak with a big 4-2 home victory against Lakewood. “I’ve told them that every season has challenges and adversity.

It’s about how you respond to it. It’s a great life lesson.”

Chatfield — No. 5 in the CHSAANow.com 5A rankings — was coming off back-to-back conference losses to Arvada West and Dakota Ridge. The Chargers (17-2, 2-2 in league) knew a third loss in league play would likely end any chance of winning the conference title.

“It was something we wanted to fight for going into it,” Chatfield sophomore Peyton Shepard said of the Chargers going after that league title.

“We had the energy to do it today.”

Sophomore Dakota DiPaola walked to start the rally. Shepard and junior Courtney Bidwell ripped back-to-back RBI hits to regain the lead.

“Those two hits by Peyton and Courtney were huge. It just flipped the switch,” Lazzeri said. “The energy came up on the dugout. It reminded us who we are and that we could do this.”

DiNapoli drove in her second run of the game to extend the Chargers’ lead to 4-2 heading to the sixth inning. The junior ace was even more impressive in the circle. DiNapoli finished with 15 strikeouts and worked her way out of a jam in the top of the seventh inning to preserve the win.

“When she (DiNapoli) gets in her groove she is scary,” Lazzeri said.

However, Wheat Ridge responded with a four-run sixth inning to tie the game 6-6. Junior Jalesa Lujan had a huge 2-run double and junior Aliyah Rothstein had an RBI single to tie things up 6-6.

It looked like the Farmers would grab the lead with Lee Quezada ripped an RBI single up the middle, but Makenzie threw out Lujan at the plate to end the inning.

“It’s been the mainstay of what we try to do here,” Herbers said of the Demons’ defense. “Emma struggled a little bit today and she knew it, but this is that situation where she had to rely on her defense. They made plays for her. I love our defense.”

Golden’s offense stepped up again with a 3-run inning thanks to backto-back doubles by Makayla and senior Molly Hord. A throwing error by the Farmers allowed two runs to score to make it a 9-6 game.

Wheat Ridge sophomore Aaliyah Arellano belted a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh inning, but a line drive by junior Carly Storrer was caught by Makayla to end the game.

“That was insane,” Makenzie said. “We had to make so many good plays. Wheat Ridge hit the ball and we had to make the plays.”

“Wheat Ridge is a top-5 (4A) team in the state. They’ll be there in the end,” Herbers said. “If we want to make a run we have to beat the best.”
