After that I became a pediatric nurse practitioner, and for the past 25 years, I’ve worked at Rocky Mountain Pediatrics. I am very passionate about people taking care of their kids as best as they can.

Being a parent is probably as important as a job that there is, and children are our future.

Lakewood resident since day one I’ve lived in Lakewood since its name was Jefferson City. I can remember when everybody didn’t like that name.

being vibrant and going on. Then a lot of places became empty. Now we’re in a revitalization stage.

by Sprout City Farms that is in the area that we helped establish. I was involved when the art district was created here.

I participated when Lakewood won the All-American City Award in 2016. As a neighborhood organization leader, I attend all community meetings and volunteer whenever there are events because I feel it really impacts our neighborhood.

Lived in the same house for 50 years I’m very passionate about where I live, and I want it to be the best it can be.

We have all kinds of condos that are going up. There’s going to be a lot of market rate apartments too. I want to see more upbred restaurants, more upgraded grocery stores and more people coming to this area as a destination, rather than just passing through.

Entrepreneurs Gene Caballero and Zach Hendrix have been working in the landscaping industry since they were in college. Hendrix said he would mow his neighbors’ lawns while in college to pay for beer.

As the two Nashville natives grew older, they got involved with their own landscaping businesses, but they’ve let their imagination take them to new heights in their trade.

Caballero and Hendrix have watched popular transportation service apps like Uber and Lyft take off across the country, and they wanted to create a similar business model — one that can help landscaping businesses and those who are looking for lawn care service.

So, Caballero and Hendrix launched an app five years ago that they want to be the Uber of lawn care. The app, GreenPal, was made available in Lakewood about a month ago, and over 100,000 homeowners across the country have already used it, including in Denver. GreenPal users list their lawn care needs on the app, and a landscaping company in their area will be matched with them based on the work that is listed.

“It compares to Uber by being able to get same day service, and also being able to summon a ubiquitous service from

your smart phone,” Caballero said. Caballero has hopes that GreenPal will be available in every major market by 2020.

The app comes in handy for landscaping businesses too, according to Joey Young, the chief operating officer of Ypmi Enterprise LLC, a Colorado landscaping company. Young’s company had to go through a preapproval process before it could offer lawn care services on the app, like every other landscaping company on GreenPal. He said Ypmi Enterprise LLC has had an increase in customers since it joined GreenPal about three months ago. “(GreenPal) is a great gateway, and it’s perfect for my business. I think it’s great for the customers, and it’s reliable on everybody’s behalf,” Young said.

GreenPal is available on Apple’s App Store and Google Play, and it’s available in 20 states, including Georgia, Florida, Ohio, Texas and California. Hendrix said the company felt like Lakewood was a good fit for the app to be made available at, because of the city’s location and culture.

“Lakewood was one of the top cities on our list. We like to go into the local suburbs or towns that are relevant. We’re very happy with the growth that we’re seeing right now,” Hendrix said.

Millions of minutes read during library summer program STAFF REPORT

Nearly 45,000 residents read more than 48 million minutes as part of Jefferson County Public Library’s summer reading program, according to a news release from the library district.

Summer 2018’s numbers are up from 43,000 participants and about 37 million minutes read in 2017, the release said. Because Jeffco residents exceeded the library district’s goals, Foothills Animal Shelter will receive $500, compliments of the Jefferson County

Library Foundation, the release said.

“We’re beyond excited to see our summer reading program continue to break records year after year,” Pam Nissler, the library district’s executive director, said in the news release. “Summer reading helps us create a community of readers in Jefferson County while helping kids maintain grade-level proficiencies over the summer.”

Jeffco readers earned prizes for their reading, including food, books and amusement park tickets

for the kids and teens, and a drawing for movie tickets for the adults.

The program also included school incentives. Participating schools competed for five $800 prizes to support their school library or a literacy program in their school.

The prizes were awarded thanks to contributions from the Library Board of Trustees and the Jefferson County Library Foundation.

The winning schools were those with the highest percentage of program finishers, compared to their enrollments. They are Foothills Preschool, Dennison Elemen-

tary, Bell Middle School, Green Mountain High School and Addenbrooke Classical Academy.

Subdivisions With No HOA Can Still Have Covenants, But Who’s to Enforce Them?

Although the often dreaded Homeowners Association (or “HOA”) has been around for a long time, its widespread use goes back only a few decades. Prior to, say, 1980, it was common for new subdivisions to have covenants, but no reasonable way to enforce them. This begs the question; “why have covenants if they can’t be enforced?” Enter the HOA, an entity designed and created to answer that question.

Many early covenants had provisions that after 30 years or so the majority of homeowners would have to petition to renew them.

Some covenants had the opposite provision — i.e., they automatically renewed unless a majority of homeowners agreed to abandon them. All covenants, whether still valid or not, are recorded and thus provided with other title docs.

Let’s say you live in a subdivision with still enforceable covenants but no HOA. The only way to enforce the covenants against a homeowner who is in violation of them would be for one or more homeowners to file a civil suit against the offender. Obviously, that is not practical, which is probably why developers of new subdivisions started including an HOA in their CC&Rs — Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions.

Some older subdivisions such as 6th Avenue West have created “neighborhood associations” with voluntary dues (usually under $100 per year) which are used to create community through various activities, such as picnics and newsletters. That sense of community can in turn contribute to social pressure for members of the community to abide by the provisions set forth in the covenants.

Lakewood Estates, a 1980s subdivision across Jewell Avenue from White Fence Farm, has taken this approach a step further. This voluntary HOA exerts pressure and has even shown a willingness to take legal action against residents who violate provisions of their older, but still existing covenants.

What neighborhood associations can’t do is to levy fines against homeowners. HOA fines can become liens against the property, too, so they always get paid, along with unpaid dues, even if only at closing upon sale.

EPA warns of potential cancer risks in Lakewood Terumo BCT’s facility named one of 26 places in the country emitting ethylene oxide

Nikki Browne and her two-yearold and five-year-old daughters live only a block away from Terumo BCT Sterilization Services in Lakewood, a company that manufactures medical devices to treat critically ill patients. Her daughters are like any other children and love to run around and play with each other in the backyard of her house.

Browne said she was “shocked” when she found out that the National Air Toxics Assessment from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identified the Terumo BCT’s facility as one of 26 places in the country where emissions of ethylene oxide may pose an elevated risk for cancer. The Terumo BCT Lakewood location is the only one in the United States. The assessment is based off computer modeling that identifies air pollutants, rather than actual air sampling, or cancer rates. The estimated cancer risk is thought to be 500 in a million for someone with about 70 years of exposure to ethylene oxide, according to a statement from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).

“I’m extremely concerned, and I’m mad. I’ve been trying to keep my daughters safe with everything in their body, and then to find out they could be breathing in toxins? It’s absolutely frustrating, and it’s terrifying to me now since that report came out,” Browne said.

Terumo BCT, located at 11308 W. Collins Ave., is around 57,000 square-feet and contains six buildings. The medical device manufacturing is permitted by the Air Pollution Control Division at the state health department, and it does not exceed permitted emissions, according to CDPHE. It has been in the Lakewood area since 1967.

“Safety and health are top priorities for our associates, our community and the patients we ultimately serve… We work vigorously to minimize impact on the environment,” Rusty Spinney, executive vice president of global operations for Terumo BCT said.

Tom Gulland, director of factory operations for Terumo BCT said it formed a team to determine a way to lower emissions. CDPHE is in the process of taking air samples that will measure actual exposures in the area surrounding the Lakewood location. Once that data is collected, a health risk assessment will be conducted. The results from the air samples are expected to be released by mid-September.

We have no evidence that there are any consequences for the neighborhood, but we want to find out what is being admitted to the neighborhood,” Jefferson County Public Health Executive Director Mark Johnson said.

Those who are exposed to ethylene oxide over a long period of time can suffer from irritated eyes, skin, lungs, nose and throat, according to the EPA. Other health complications can include headaches, memory loss and numbness.

Long-term exposure to the gas increases the risk for certain types of cancer like breast cancer, non-Hodg-

kin lymphoma, myeloma and lymphocytic leukemia. Dr. Larry Wok, chief medical officer and executive director of CDPHE said the state health department’s cancer registry assessed cancer incidence the week of Aug. 13 in the area of Terumo BCT and found that those cancers in the area were not elevated.

“I saw (the EPA report), and I was like `yeah great, what a bunch of idiots.’” Lakewood resident Bill Foltyn said, insulting Terumo. He lives one mile from the factory.

“The EPA is set up for a reason. I like when there is accountability for toxic levels of chemicals,” Foltyn said.

Spacecraft will take astronauts back to the moon NASA’s Orion capsule shipped to Florida for final assembly STAFF REPORT

A spacecraft capsule that will return astronauts to the moon has been completed and shipped to Florida for final assembly into a full spacecraft, according to a news release from Lockheed Martin.

The pressure vessel for NASA’s Orion Exploration Mission-2 (EM-2) spacecraft was welded together over seven months by Lockheed Martin technicians and engineers at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility near New Orleans.

Orion is the world’s only exploration-class spaceship, and the EM-2

mission will be its first flight with astronauts on board, taking them farther into the solar system than ever before, the release said.

“It’s great to see the EM-2 capsule arrive just as we are completing the final assembly of the EM-1 crew module,” Mike Hawes, Lockheed Martin vice president and program manager for Orion, said in the release. “We’ve learned a lot building the previous pressure vessels and spacecraft and the EM-2 spacecraft will be the most capable, cost-effective and efficient one we’ve built.”

Orion’s pressure vessel is made from seven large, machined aluminum alloy pieces that are welded together to produce a strong, light-weight, air-tight capsule. It was designed specifically to withstand the harsh and demanding environment of deep space travel while keeping the crew safe and productive.

“We’re all taking extra care with this build and assembly, knowing that this spaceship is going to take astronauts back to the moon for the first time in four decades,” Matt Wallo, senior manager of Lockheed Martin Orion Production at Michoud, said in the release. “It’s amazing to think that, one day soon, the crew will watch the sun rise over the lunar horizon through the windows of this pressure vessel. We’re all humbled and proud to be doing our part for the future of exploration.”

The capsule was shipped over the road from New Orleans to the Kennedy Space Center, arriving Aug. 24. Now in the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building, Lockheed Martin technicians will immediately start assembly and integration on the EM-2 crew module.

Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company based in

Bethesda, Maryland, with a number of Colorado locations, including offices in Denver, Littleton, Englewood and Boulder.

Lockheed Martin also recently sent the U.S. Air Force’s first GBS III space vehicle to Cape Canaveral for its expected launch in December, a Lockheed Martin news release said. Designed and built at Lockheed Martin’s GPS III Processing Facility near Denver, the satellite was shipped Aug. 20 from Buckley Air Force Base to the Cape on a massive Air Force C-17 aircraft.

GPS III will be the most powerful and resilient GPS satellite ever put on orbit, the release said. Developed with a new design for U.S. and allied forces, it will have three times greater accuracy and up to eight times improved anti-jamming capabilities over the previous GPS II satellite design block, which makes up today’s GPS constellation.

Lakewood citizens will have an important decision when they receive their November ballots: either property owners get a refund from Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) limits, or the money will go toward projects that the city has identified as community needs.

Last Monday, Lakewood City Council voted 7-3 in favor of a special November ballot question in which voters can choose to have $12.5 million refunded to property owners, or use the funds toward community projects. The money comes from additional tax revenue collected last year, largely due to the 2017 hailstorm that caused residents to replace their cars, or make repairs to their homes.

Jeffco health brings awareness to opioid addiction Event features education, remembrance opportunities

Jefferson County Public Health hosted an End Overdose Jeffco event on Aug. 29. The event featured keynote speakers, resources, the Office of Behavioral Health’s Opioid Memorial Wall and a presentation by a public health nurse, Chris Hammond, on overdose response and prevention training.

Eight indicted for operating metro area ID theft ring Jefferson County grand jury returned a 68-count indictment on Aug. 21

Seven of eight people have been arrested for their involvement in an identification (ID) theft ring that reached nine counties and victimized 26 merchants and 14 individual people.

“Unfortunately, ID theft is very common,” said Pam Russell, the communications director for the First Judicial District Attorney. “We hope that (this) investigation, arrest and prosecution will help serve as a deterrent to others who might consider this illegal activity.”

The Jefferson County grand jury returned a 68-count indictment on Aug. 21 that included charges of ID theft, theft, conspiracy to commit theft, forgery, criminal impersonation, false information to a pawnbroker, aggravated motor vehicle theft and attempted theft. The defendants will each be charged according to their alleged participation in the crime ring.

Four men and four women are named in the indictment. They are Michael John Mancuso, III, 28; Jacob Wyatt Westfall, 20; Matthew Paul Lane, 42; Dwone Daunte Extor, 22; Texie Shannon Lane, 35; Chelsea Juanita Dix,

All but Knight are in the custody of law enforcement. An arrest warrant has been issued for her.

The indictment cites that the crimes occurred between December 2017 and

April 2018.The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office says the defendants illegally obtained financial and personal information of real people and used it to purchase goods and services.

Most of the credit card information they used was from Chase VISA credit cards, although it is unknown how the defendants gained access to the information — name, address, credit card number, security code and expiration date — on the VISA cards. Most of the victims are Colorado residents.

“Often, a member of the enterprise would contact a business by telephone and tell them they wanted to purchase an item for a relative. They would then provide the credit card information over the phone. Another member of the group would pick up the pre-paid item. They would then sell the items to pawn shops or second-hand stores.

Members would be paid or promised a fee for each item they sold,” according to the press release from the DA’s office.

Some of the merchandise mentioned in the indictment includes new bicycles, jewelry, clothing, motor vehicles, archery equipment, gift cards, mountain cabin rental and musical instruments.

The indictment states a there is a transaction total of over $20,000.

The suspects involved in these incidents were caught, but that isn’t always the outcome in ID theft cases, Russell said.

ID thieves use a variety of approaches, she said — everything from stealing mail from mailboxes to the IRS Imposter scam. With the latter,

Russell explained, most often, a scammer pretends to be an IRS official and frightens/threatens people into sending money. Or, they demand or extort your information which they in turn use to steal your identity. Scams like these generally originate outside the US, Russell said, making apprehension impossible.

“We must remain vigilant. Considering the range of ID theft scams and schemes, often ID thieves are not caught,” Russell said. “We hope to educate consumers about the best ways to protect themselves from becoming victims. Education and public awareness are our best tools.”

Jefferson County Public Schools’ Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) and college entrance test results for the 2017-18 school year outpace the state of Colorado for achievement and growth data on CMAS and PSAT/SAT assessments, even as the district’s achievement gap remains.

One of the school success stories in Jeffco includes Green Gables Elementary in Lakewood, celebrating English language arts growth results that increased from the 37th percentile in 2016 to 56th in 2018. CMAS mathematics growth showed even larger gains, from the 28th percentile to the 58th percentile over three years. Achievement scores also steadily improved.

“Over the last two years, we pulled together as a highly-collaborative school community with a laser-like focus on the student experience, professional learning, and fostering strong relationships through a commitment to restorative practices,” said Green Gables Principal Suanne Hawley. “Thanks to the hard work of our staff, student self-direction, and support from our families, our kids are learning more than ever!”

Notable Jeffco performance highlights include SAT and PSAT achievement and growth scores that substantially exceed the state of Colorado’s overall performance, as well as performance gains in middle school math achievement.

Jeffco 10th-graders scored an average of 982 on the PSAT with ninthgraders scoring an average on 940.

State-wide results showed an average 10th-grade score of 944 and an overage ninth-grade score of 902. On the SAT, Jeffco 11th-graders also surpassed the state average by 42 points with an average score of 1056.

The most significant year-over-year growth was in seventh-grade math with a 5.9 percent increase in students meeting or exceeding expectation putting the total at 39.3 percent.

ber of students meeting or exceeding expectations to 24.1. This puts seventh-graders above the state average of 28.8, but eight graders below the state average of 28.2.

However, eight grade students taking advanced math score above the state average with 78.7 percent of algebra students meeting or exceeding expectations and 90.3 percent of geometry students meeting or exceeding.

In English language arts, seventh graders also showed the most gain with 53.8 percent of students meeting or exceeding expectations — a 2.5 percent increase from last year.

“It’s clear we have made progress, and we make a point to celebrate those successes,” said Matt Flores, chief academic officer for Jeffco schools. “We also track the strategies that are making an impact so we can support this work in other areas of our district.”

The most significant decrease in performance on this years assessment for Jeffco students was sixth-grade math, which declined to 38.9 percent of students meeting or exceeding expectations — a drop of 2.3 percent from last year. The state average for sixth-grade math is 30.4 percent.

CMAS and SAT results also provide an opportunity to identify areas that need attention, notably opportunity gaps for students who reside in lower income communities.

Of the students tested who are eligible for free/reduced lunch, 29.1 percent met or exceeded expectations in English language arts, while 18.3 percent did so in math. This is compared to 61.8 percent and 51.7 percent for students who are not eligible.

A press release from Jeffco schools states that the district “has prioritized its commitment to equity in Jeffco’s strategic vision and strategic plan, as the organization believes a truly great system offers all students an opportunity to realize their full potential.”

“Jeffco Public Schools continues its tradition of excellence, as expected,” said Superintendent Dr. Jason Glass.

“However, our work in transforming the classroom experience for all students will give us more opportunities to make learning engaging, and I’m confident that our CMAS, PSAT, and SAT results will track that positive impact as we move forward.”

VOICES Taking a leave of absence to be more present

A

bsent (def): not present in a place, at an occasion, or as part of something.

Leave of absence (def): time when one has permission to be absent.

I have been absent … over the summer, primarily, and with permission, mostly. Although I needed to step away from what was too onerous or too demanding at the time, I’ve also been absent from aspects of my life that are enjoyable, exciting and satisfying … such as writing to you regularly in this column. Fortunately, though, I was able to take the time I needed, and now I’m back.

Earlier this year, I reported on a short sabbatical I had taken during which I didn’t open my computer, turn on the TV or the radio, check emails

or texts, or take calls for about 10 days.

I emerged with the strength and fortitude to make some tough decisions, as well as to take some leaps of faith.

ALCHEMY Maybe that abbreviated event encouraged me to seek permission for my more extended leave of absence the past few months.

And now that Labor Day has come and gone – that harbinger of football (finally!), back to school, Andrea Doray and the change in seasons precipitating all that fall in Colorado has to offer – I’m prompted

to reflect on this experience.

What did it mean to be “absent,” to be “not present”? I realized that, for me, being absent has actually meant that I was more present in many cases. Being absent from social obligations (some) and business obligations (a few) gave me breathing room to be present for two bittersweet celebration-of-life memorials, a joyous family wedding, numerous events out of town, and the leap-of-faith move that I mentioned above.

Along the way, some of these temporary absences have turned into permanent decisions not to continue at all, which have made me wonder: what else can I truly jettison from the precious hours of each day to make more room for being present?

Where can I find the time – as well as

the physical and emotional energy – to work out and continue rehabbing from the car accident last year? To practice the piano? To explore the bike paths of my new neighborhood? To spend more time with the people I care about?

And, perhaps most importantly, how will I give my own self permission to let go of obligations that previously have been so closely held?

The answer, I’m finding, is right here … within my own self. Of course, I’m concerned about the impacts of my absences on others; these are always part of the equation. What I didn’t count on, though, were the impacts on me.

During this time, the collective bargaining process has consumed a largess of educational resources that could have otherwise been directed to the brick and mortar and capital maintenance needs of districts.

Jeffco residents are aware of their school district’s legacy with taxpayer dollars and are circumspect of the board’s ability to be effective stewards of the funds they are requesting now.

And using the so-called “eye test,” you would say the same thing: the other two seem to make defenders miss to make big plays, while Booker tends to run into the rear ends of his own blockers to lose yards. But, for some reason, the powers that be around the Broncos seem dead-set on making Booker the man. They seem to have some affinity for his game that never makes itself obvious to the fans. You saw a similar bias for the longest time at the quarterback position: for some reason, the Broncos just never seemed to believe their own eyes with regards to Paxton Lynch.

convince voters they are sincere and forthright in their stewardship of the funds they are asking for, is to demonstrate a commitment to a higher level of fiscal responsibility. In other words, inform voters that this current funds request will be counter balanced with

news and information site? And, generally speaking, does that news site tend to lean to one side or the other politically? And how does that lean align with your own beliefs? More than that, how often do you seek out information from the other side of the spectrum?

See, we’re now officially in the silly season, and we’re all going to start getting inundated with advertising, and social media feeds, and polling numbers, and all manner of information that we’ll have to sift through as we’re trying to decide how to vote in November. And it becomes very easy to fall back into our comfort zones and only accept information that confirms our own biases.

But, this time around, I challenge you to seek out, and truly understand the arguments of the other side. Who knows? You might learn something. At the very least, think how much fun it could be to anticipate an opponent’s ar-

gument, and beat them to it, and then refute it.

This time of year, it’s pretty easy to suggest where to find beauty. For my money, there are two “can’t miss” scenic drives.

The first is Guanella Pass between Georgetown and Grant.

The colors are spectacular, and, if that disappoints, there’s beautiful views of a number of 14-ers. The second drive is down Highway 285 to Trout Creek Pass. The pass itself is not terribly interesting— Wiki describes it as “mild”—but the peak of the pass overlooks the town of Buena Vista, and provides a breathtaking view of the Collegiate Peaks Range and its eight 14-ers.

Teams sign anyone for a ‘W,’ and sports go straight to ‘L’

lost out. Or lucked out.

When I was (much) younger, I thought about becoming a sports writer, partly because of my admiration for Jim Murray, whom I read daily in The Los Angeles Times throughout college.

Best sports writer ever, and that includes Grantland Rice, Ring Lardner, Mitch Albom, Roger Angell, and even George Will (who knows baseball).

Murray wrote this about UCLA football coach Henry “Red” Sanders: “It is probable he had fewer close friends than any celebrated man in America. He seemed always to be nursing some private disillusionment for which he bore no grudge but which precluded ever leading with his heart with anyone.”

Writing about the Indianapolis 500 after there were some racetrack deaths, he wrote, “Gentlemen, start your coffins.”

His kind of writing was and is rare.

His kind of sports writing is nonexistent.

There are scandals all over sports, college and professional, and if I had become a sports writer, I’d have to write about many things I would rather not.

Sanders said, “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.” It’s a quote often attributed to Vince Lombardi, but Sanders said it first.

And he was correct.

It drives everything and we all benefit or suffer because of it.

The local National Football League team is an opiate for the region. I understand it. I have my own team: It just doesn’t happen to be this one.

When my team wins, my day is better.

When my team loses, I am downcast.

In order to win, college and professional teams will stoop, cheat, lie, mislead, and cover for athletes and coaches who have misbehaved.

One college football player said he took a pay cut when he signed his pro contract.

What would Murray have done with Reggie Bush?

Or Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, or Barry Bonds? I’m glad I will never know.

There were corruptions when he was writing, but not like there are now. And I know they would have had an impact on him.

I am sure he could have been just as eloquent in denunciation, but I preferred it the other way: when he

was praising a player or a team or a coach.

Longtime readers know that I can be cranky. I write in a reflection of the world I live in, and I wish — somtimes — it didn’t seem necessary.

That’s when you hear about my dachshund, or Jennifer, or coffee additives, or some obscure song or film.

If I had stayed with sports alone, it’s likely there would have been a lot of cranky columns, and who wants that?

In 2012, the athlete the local National Football League team just signed “was ordered to pay $12.4 million in damages to two Las Vegas strip club employees from an incident in 2007” (The Denver Post).

The good news is that he has 16 interceptions in 139 career games.

And that’s all that matters.

Toast Toppers Nut butters like LIFELONG almond butter with nuts and no LEARNING only sugar have many possibilities with sliced bananas and a sprinkle of cinnamon or granola. A new possibility that has been a favorite in Europe for years is nut free semi healthy chocolate spread with bananas, mashed strawberries, or pear slices. Cream cheese is a good base with slices with mashed strawberries or no sugar jam. Children can also sprinkle dried cranberries, cherries and pumpkin or sunflower seeds. Some children may like mashed small curd cottage cheese. Apples sauce with no sugar and a little cinnamon is a good way to start the day.

Putting eggs on top of whole wheat toast adds nutrition whether eggs are hard boiled, scrambled or cooked both sides with the yolk broken, avoiding runny eggs. Topping with melted shredded cheese is a hit.

Some children are learning to like hummus, mashed black beans with a little salt and pepper and a teaspoon of spaghetti sauce, melted shredded cheese, or shredded carrots.

Try a few ideas when there is more time on weekends to give kids practice.

The above recipes are good to do with budding teenage cooks and grandparents.

Easy Chia Jam Children can make this strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, or plum jam in 20 minutes with chia seeds.

The Aztec seeds have omega 3 fatty acids, fiber and protein. No pectin or huge amounts of sugar are needed.

Children will need 2 cups chopped fresh or frozen thawed fruit,1 tablespoon lemon juice,1 tablespoon honey, or maple syrup and 2 tablespoons chia seeds. They can be ground in a coffee grinder and will still work. Dark fruits are preferred.

Remove fruit stems, etc. and chop into small pieces, if needed. Cook on medium- low heat in saucepan until fruit starts to break down about 5-10 minutes.

Remove from heat and mix. Stir in honey and lemon juice. Adjust to taste. Stir in chia seeds and let stand for 5 minutes. If too runny add a little more seeds. The jam will continue to thicken somewhat while in the refrigerator. Transfer to a glass jar and keep refrigerated. It is good in the refrigerator for two weeks and can be frozen for three months.

Children can also skip the cooking, if desired.

If you think there isn’t anything much cuter than seeing a dog dressed up in a creative costume, then imagine about a hundred making their way along Washington Avenue in downtown Golden.

“It seems like people are getting more and more creative with the costumes every year,” said Liz Maddy, Foothills Animal Shelter’s marketing and community engagement manager.

“Everyone has so much love for their pets. This is a fun way to show off your pet and support Foothills Animal Shelter.”

The third annual Toby’s Pet Parade & Fair, a fundraiser for Foothills Animal Shelter, takes place 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 8.

Golden residents Jason and Marlo Quade have been involved with Foothills Animal Shelter for a number of years. Jason is currently the president of the Friends of Foothills Animal Shelter Board of Directors and the two have attended the event as spectators before.

But this year, the Quades are excited to participate in the parade for the first time. They have three dogs, but will be bringing Alee, a female English cocker spaniel, dressed as a ladybug.

“It’s fun to see all the pups dressed up,” Marlo Quade said. But moreover, she added, it’s important to support the local animal shelter. “It’s a community-centric shelter. They do more than just house homeless pets.”

She points to microchipping, vaccines, spay/neuter and other low-cost services the shelter offers to the community.

The staff and volunteers “give so much time, energy and love to the animals,” Jason Quade said. “And when the community reciprocates, it pumps them up to want to give even more to the community’s pets.”

Meet Miss Layla Mae, the 2018 Toby’s Pet Parade grand marshal When Brooke Dahlinger of Superior had to put her dog to sleep last November after being together for 13 years, she visited all the local shelters in search for a new four-legged companion.

After a few months, on a Saturday night in February, Dahlinger found herself browsing Foothills Animal Shelter’s website when a picture of Layla’s face came up.

“I went in to go see her first thing in the morning the next day,” Dahlinger said, who was familiar with the shelter because of her volunteer work in 2009.

She knew at first sight that Layla was the one for her.

Layla is an American bully, a new breed that came about circa 2013. She is what Dahlinger calls a “throw away momma,” meaning she is a female dog raised by a “backyard breeder” for the sole purpose of having puppies for the breeder to sell.

Because of continual breeding every time they go into heat, which is about every six months, Dahlinger said, the dogs eventually become too sick to reproduce. Or, they no longer produce quality puppies to sell, she said.

This is when they are discarded, Dahlinger said.

A good Samaritan found Layla in a park, tied up with a male dog of unknown relation to her, and took her to Foothills Animal Shelter. She was extremely underweight and suffered from a lot of hair loss. A veterinarian determined she was about three years old and had already had up to six litters of puppies — one being quite recent to the time she was discovered.

“I rescue to save,” Dahlinger said.

“Once I saw how bad of shape she was in, I wanted her even more.”

Dahlinger adopted Layla on Feb. 4.

Layla will be this year’s grand marshal in the third annual Toby’s Pet Parade & Fair and will be participating in meet-and-greets during the entire event.

Layla is going to love the attention, and she deserves it, Dahlinger said.

“She’s sweet and docile and everything a shelter dog represents,” Dahlinger said. “She overcame a bad situation and found her forever, loving home.”

Exuberant show sets tone for Arvada Center season

The café in northern Denver’s Five Points, a neighborhood with deep musical history, boasts one of the metro area’s best-known open mics, but out in the suburbs, newer venues also see strong turnout — and for 38 State Brewing Company in Littleton, that includes newcomers.

“I’ve definitely seen a whole lot of out-of-towners saying, ‘I just moved here,’” said Angie Boyle, head bartender at the brewery at 8071 S. Broadway. Amid metro-area population growth, some in 38 State’s openmic crowd say they’re new to the area, checking out the scene and trying to get booked to play shows, Boyle said.

A few miles east in Lone Tree, Patrick DiBartolomeo sees performances from all ages at Lincoln Station Coffee/Pizza/Music, located just south of Interstate 25 and C-470 along the light-rail line.

“In any given week, you may see as young as 8 or 9 years old all the way up to performers in their 70s,” said DiBartolomeo, owner of the business. “We frequently see highschoolers working on their craft up to seasoned performers doing what they have been doing for decades.”

And it’s not just a fleeting hobby, as Boyle sees at 38 State.

he first show in a theater’s season sets the tone for the rest of the year, and by opening its 2018-19 season with “Mamma Mia!” the Arvada Center’s message is clear — this year is going to be bigger than ever.

“This show is really just the best time,” said actress Shannan Steele, who plays Donna Sheridan in the production. “Audiences are in for a party and they’re going to relish every bit of the music.”

“Mamma Mia!” runs at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., Sept. 7-30. Performances are at 7:30 COMING Tuesdays ATTRACTIONS p.m. through Saturdays, matinees are at 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and at 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Directed by Rod A. Lansberry, the show is based on the music of Swedish pop icons ABBA. Donna lives on a Clarke Reader Greek island with her daughter, Sophie (Mariah MacFarlane). Donna is a hotel owner, and between that and Sophie she seems to be perfectly content. But when Sophie goes in search of her father so he can be a part of her wedding, Donna’s world gets turned upside down.

“I love Donna because she’s so independent and is really a rock star in her own right,” Shannan said. “As a mother myself I understand trying to maintain that balance of independence and the love she has in her heart.

Donna really explores the vast depths that come with being a mother.”

Audiences will almost certainly recognize ABBA standards like “Dancing Queen” and “Take A Chance on Me,” and it’s the kind of show where people have to actively stop themselves from dancing. There’s not a lot of dialogue in the show, Shannan said, so not only is music the main communication tool, but it also illuminates and deepens the relationships between the characters.

“The ensemble in this show is so strong and that just adds to the overall experience,” she added. “This is the kind of show where the audience is going to feel like a part of the show experience.”

teve Smulian, 71, plucked and sang on a small stage in Littleton for an audience that barely included more people than the bartender and the host.

But even after playing guitar for 56 years — including about 10 as a professional musician — Smulian still loves playing open-mic nights because, for him, it’s about the people, whether he’s playing for a small group or a large crowd.

“Most good musicians are welcoming,” Smulian said. “It’s art, and art is not a contest.”

That’s the sentiment that aspiring musicians, comedians or writers — or casual performers looking for an outlet — will find at open-mic nights in the Denver metro area, events that offer a place to hone skills, build networks and, above all, be yourself.

‘Circuit’ of talent With a sticker-covered guitar,

Ben Duncan, a 25-year-old who recently moved to Denver from Indiana, delivers a comedy set on stage Aug. 29 at the Mercury Café at 2199 California St. in Denver. “Denver’s got a pretty great scene,” Duncan said.

Michael Thompson sat on stage at the Mercury Café, where performers appear on Wednesday nights to play to a laid-back crowd.

But the atmosphere at the eclectic Denver location shouldn’t fool anyone — the musicians can whip out some skilled, and intricate, routines.

“The Denver area has a pretty good circuit of people,” Boyle said, who network and play in venues all over the region. People even come down from Boulder to perform, she added.

‘Do your thing’ On any night, an open-mic event is likely happening somewhere in the metro area, with the middle of the week — Tuesday through Thursday — especially rife with options, according to internet listings.

Across many venues, the audiences and performers alike offer a supportive environment, staff say.

“Everybody just sits and listens to the music,” said Tim Ferry, manager at The Toad Tavern near the LittletonEnglewood border.

He emphasized the lack of judgment, adding, “Go up there and do your thing.”

After artists perform, they make good audience members, which helps them support each other and the venues themselves, DiBartolomeo said.

“We have seen many new relationships and musical collaborations formed as the musicians get to know one another,” DiBartolomeo said. Arriving early to meet people and get the “lay of the land” is a good way to ease in for first-timers, he said.

Some venues feature booked music performances, too, and for Ferry, open mic is an opportunity for artists to show their skills and potentially get invited to play a scheduled show. Boyle echoed that.

“We’ve pulled a couple good bands straight from open mic” for live-music shows, Boyle said.

The Late Late Weekend with Craig Ferguson I really miss having Craig Ferguson on my television on the regular.

During his time on CBS’ “The Late Late Show” he was a funny, at times melancholic voice in an industry too often overflowing with gimmicks and nothing to say.

In addition to being a host, director and novelist, Ferguson has a long history as a stand-up comedian. And he’ll be embracing that role when he spends four nights at the Comedy Works Downtown, 1226 15th St. in Denver, Sept. 7 through 10.

A legend in person at Sloan’s Lake Fantasy as a film genre was at an interesting point in the 1980s. Visual effects were coming along, though most of the time they look remarkably cheesy to contemporary eyes,

Thomas the Tank Engine returns to Colorado Railroad Museum for three weekends in September

When Thomas comes back to the Colorado Railroad Museum this year, it’s likely that grandparents who read the book as a child will bring their children, who watched the show on television growing up.

“And now their kids are getting to ride on a real train pulled by Thomas,” said Danielle Ghear, the event and volunteer manager at the Colorado Railroad Museum. A Day Out With Thomas “really brings Thomas to life for kids and families.”

After visiting Golden in the middle of summer last year, Thomas the Tank Engine is back to his regular fall visit this year — The A Day Out With Thomas event returns to the Colorado Railroad Museum for three weekends in September — Sept. 8 and 9, 15 and 16, and 22 and 23.

Tallman recommends to plan about two-to-three hours to experience all that A Day Out With Thomas offers.

Attendees should arrive at least an hour prior to their train’s departure.

Tickets cost $20 each during off-peak ride times, 8:30-9:15 a.m. and 1:45-4:45 p.m. Tickets for peak ride times, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., cost $25 each.

Families may stay afterward for as long as they would like to enjoy the activities.

Food: A variety of food vendors will be available for lunch, snack or dessert purchases. Families may also bring a picnic lunch

but there are no lockers or storage facilities on-site.

It has become a holiday tradition for many and tickets sold out in record time this year — 23 days in August, three months before the first performance.

Plein Air artists featured in Plan Jeffco exhibit STAFF REPORT

Twenty-five professional artists will paint from dawn to dusk at one Jeffco Open Space location each day from Sept. 10-15 as part of In Plein Sight, a week-long live painting event.

PLAN Jeffco, a nonprofit volunteer-led organization of open space advocates based in Jefferson County, is the organizer of the event, which also includes a gallery exhibit Sept. 12-16 at the Golden Community Center, 1470 10th St., Golden.

Freshly painted works will be added to the gallery each day as the artists continue to produce new pieces during the week, and all artwork will be available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds will benefit PLAN Jeffco’s

As Thomas is introducing the next generation of rail fans to the museum, he added, their families have

educational outreach.

In Plein Sight launched as the largest, first-of-its-kind plein air painting event in Jeffco’s Open Space in October 2016. The launch event was wildly successful with more than $35,000 of artwork sold. Literally meaning “open air,” plein air was developed in the mid-19th century by French impressionists including Monet, Pissarro, and Renoir.

“We are very excited to bring In Plein Sight back to Jefferson County this year,” In Plein Sight event chair and longtime PLAN Jeffco board member John Litz said in a news release. “It has become more important than ever to preserve our open space as the Colorado population continues to boom. We feel this event is the perfect way to celebrate our parks

Families enjoy the railroad museum in general, Ghear said, but at A Day Out With Thomas, kids can barely control their excitement because they can’t wait to experience all of the additional fun stuff going on.

“Be prepared to have a whole day of fun hanging out with your kiddos,” Ghear said, “just watching them have a blast.”

ARVADA — The defending Class 5A state football champions looked impressive, but did have some issues in their home opener Thursday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.

Pomona defeated old Jeffco rival Bear Creek 49-6 despite turning the ball over four times.

“We’ve got to quit making mistakes,” Pomona coach Jay Madden said bluntly. “We had 378 yards of offense in the first half and you only have 28 points, that’s not good.”

The Panthers opened their season last week with a 32-14 victory over Oak Ridge (FL) in Orlando, but had turnover problems there too. Pomona senior quarterback Colten Muller finished 13-for-16 passing for 268 yards and three touchdowns, but he also was intercepted twice.

Pomona senior receivers Dominic Bettini and Billy Pospisil both were stripped of the ball on long catches to account for the other two Panther turnovers.

“It’s all about effort and control what you can control,” Pospisil said.

“I think there are a lot of little things we can fix.”

Pospisil had six catches for 144 yards and a touchdown. He also had

the longest play of the game with a 95-yard kickoff return for a score that put the Panthers up 42-6 with 5:31 left in the third quarter. The big special teams play came 13 seconds after the Bears’ lone points off a 1-yard touchdown catch by senior George Martinez from quarterback Isaiah Romero.

Bear Creek senior Nate Madrid picked off Muller and returned to the 1-yard line to set up the Bears’ lone touchdown.

“I was just going to go out there and do the best I could,” Pospisil said of his 95-yard kickoff return.

“Thankfully the blocks made a humongous hole and I just ran right through it.”

Senior David Ross had three catches for 79 yards. Two of the grabs going for touchdowns in the first half.

“Coach Madden talked about it all week,” Ross said of the Panthers going to the air. “We knew if the safeties were going to play up we were going to go over the top on them.”

Muller was solid on the ground with eight carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Therious Robison added a dozen carries for 132 yards and put in the Panthers’ final touchdown to close out the third quarter with Pomona leading 49-6.

Gonzales is the third generation of the family to play football.

Zachary’s dad, Darrell, was a 168-pound guard who graduated from Mullen in 1987.

OVERTIME Dave Gonzales, Zachary’s grandfather, was a 160-pound guard for Adams City in the late 1950s and graduated from the school in what was then called the Town of ComJim Benton merce in 1960.

“Being the third generation to play football is cool no doubt,” said Zachary, who is also a standout rugby player on the Arapahoe club team. “My grandfather is not a big sports guy like my dad. But he fondly remembers being a guard and picking up a fumble that he scored on. Grandpa is always more rewarding when report cards come home and I show him my A’s and B’s.

“My dad has the same mantra as grandpa and he has never missed a game. He rearranges his schedule to make sure he is there for me. He prepares me a pregame meal the night before games, a game-day breakfast and gets me a nice steak for lunch, and he is big on me eating healthy.”

Darrell and Dave Gonzales both point out that football and the culture surrounding sports is different than it was, especially when the 77-year-old Dave played.

“You just went out there rolled up your sleeves, put your hands in the dirt and played,” said Darrell.

“Back then was a lot different. Going to work was more important than the game. When I played, whether you knew what the snap count was or not, you just went on movement.

“My biggest plus was that I was smart enough to see the ball move and what they now call eye discipline. I would have one eye on the ball and move based on the ball and the players’ movement. Back then being 160 to 180 pounds was a big man. Nowadays that is the average for a wide receiver.”

ARVADA — Hitting was contagious Tuesday afternoon at Arvada West High School.

A-West and Golden softball teams combined for 29 hits to score 22 runs in the nonleague game between the Class 5A Jeffco and 4A Jeffco squads. When the dust settled, the Wildcats came away with a 15-7 victory in A-West’s home opener.

“We started off maybe a little slow, but once the girls settled in and were a little more selective with the pitches they were attacking they were able to string things together,” A-West coach Brenna Millikan said. “The top part of our line-up kind of sets the tone, but when we are successful its when that bottom half is really coming through.”

Golden (2-5 record) actually held a 5-4 lead through two innings. Senior Cassidy Paulson had an RBI single and Golden’s twin sisters Makayla and Makenzie Middleton highlighted a 4-run top of the second inning for the Demons

The Demons extended their lead to 7-4 with Katherine Dunson and Kaela Fajardo scoring in the top of the third inning, but it was all A-West from there on out. The Wildcats (6-2) scored 11 unanswered runs, all coming in the bottom of the third and fourth innings.

inning and was able to squelch the hot Demon bats. Clausen was able to scatter five hits in pitching four scoreless innings.

“Savannah went out there and kind of kept them offbalance, got us more ground ball outs,” Millikan said. “She has done a really good job for us and when she goes out there with a lot of energy the team feels that.”

The sophomore said her strong outing was a big confident boost. Clausen was tagged with the loss in her last outing when the Wildcats lost 13-8 to Prairie View on Aug. 24.

Golden has a bit of a break before playing in the Berthoud Tournament coming up the following weekend.

“It’s a rough schedule and it doesn’t let up,” Golden coach Chad Herbers said. “We’ve seen some really good pitchers this entire non-league and today was no different. Today we made some good adjustments on the offensive side.”

While Herbers like what he saw from the plate with his Demons, he knows his team needs to figure things out to reach their high expectations.

“We’ve just got to tie both sides (offense and defense) together,” Herbers said. “If we have any aspirations of going not only to the postseason F —but deep into the postseason — we’ve got to play these teams, mentally adjust and get d t through it.” b
