Jasper Prince Fishing is a relatively new hobby for Jasper Prince.

He’s only been doing it for a couple of years, he said. Still, the 11-year-old from Lakewood won four ribbons for his 4-H sportfishing project at this year’s Jeffco Fair & Festival.

Prince has been in 4-H for three years and he enjoys the program because it’s something everyone can participate in.

“It’s really nice because no one gets left out,” Prince said.

Prince was inspired to enter the sportfishing project after he found a fishing rod in his garage. For his project, he created handmade fishing lures, made out of beads, paper clips and bottle caps. He did research on how to make the lures, but what Prince enjoyed most about the project was, of course, going fishing — something he did five or six times for this project alone.

“I wanted to actually catch a fish, but sadly, that didn’t happen,” Prince said.

But that’s OK, he added. “I’ve still got the school year” to go fishing.

The latter is sad, Lowman said, “but the journey there is so worth it.”

Lowman, 13, of Littleton has been in 4-H for five years and gets involved with a variety of projects. At this year’s Jeffco Fair & Festival, she showed her quarter horse and two sheep, and created a shooting sports project.

Lowman has never had an interest in getting involved with traditional sports, she said. “This is what I do.”

She has made a lot of friends in 4-H and enjoys being surrounded by like-minded people who also have a lot of passion for their individual projects.

“I love how hands-on 4-H is,” Lowman said. “Nowhere else can you get experiences like this.”

Andrew Stavig In 4-H, there’s a project for everybody’s different interests.

“You can do so much,” said Andrew Stavig, 15, of Lakewood, who has been in 4-H for five years.

Stavig is pursuing computer science in his regular school-year academics, which was his inspiration for creating a video game to enter in this year’s 4-H computer science competition.

His driving game — in which the player is driving a bus and has to dodge other vehicles — placed high enough at the Jeffco Fair & Festival that Stavig will be competing with it at the Colorado State Fair later this month.

Last year, Stavig competed with a robotics project, and he enjoyed that because it was hands-on, he said. But this year, he wanted to focus on coding.

“I always wanted to learn more about coding and what it can do,” Stavig said. “And get creative with it.”

Millie Mayo Only a few days after the Jeffco Fair & Festival wraps up, Millie Mayo will be heading off to Texas A&M University to study animal science and pursue her path of becoming a veterinarian.

Mayo, 18, of Arvada participated in her final 4-H livestock competition this year because she is aging out of 4-H. She showed a llama and two pigs.

Llamas are different and unique, Mayo said, “and I’ve always enjoyed the bond between the llama and the handler.”

Mayo was involved with 4-H for six years, but has been showing llamas since she was 5. For the past four years, Mayo showed her llama Humphrey, but this summer, Humphrey died unexpectedly.

But the llama community stepped up and she was provided Blue, a 12-year-old heavy wool male, to work with for the summer.

“4-H provides you with a community that’s hard to find these days,” Mayo said. “It’s an awesome opportunity to become involved in your community and make a bigger impact on those around you.”

Man arrested after allegedly firing shots at Denver officer Police departments including Lakewood, Denver, Jefferson County and Colorado State Patrol were involved STAFF REPORT

On Aug. 8, 35-year-old Roger Dale Reynolds and 26-year-old Stacia Darline Smith were arrested after Reynolds allegedly fired gunshots at a

Denver officer, according to a release from the Lakewood Police Department.

Lakewood Police were called to the Candlewood Suites Motel at 895 Tabor St. on reports of shots fired as a multi-agency task force was tracking down Reynolds for allegedly shooting at a Denver police officer near Eighth Avenue and Urban Court. The officer wasn’t injured.

Following the shooting, Reynolds allegedly fled the scene in a stolen vehicle with Smith, as they were chased

by Lakewood Police, Denver Police, the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office and Colorado State Patrol, the release reads.

Reynolds and Smith left the vehicle and fled on foot before they were both taken into custody by Lakewood Police.

Reynolds is being held at the Jefferson County Jail for numerous charges like attempted first degree murder of a peace officer, two counts of aggravated robbery, possession of weapons by a previous offender and vehicular eluding. The charges include ones that Reynolds was wanted for in Denver, according to the release.

Lakewood Police are looking into whether or not Reynolds was involved in other crimes in Lakewood. The release says Smith was taken into custody by the parole board.

LED Lighting Has Some Health & Vision Side Effects Worth Considering

By JIM SMITH, Realtor® In my July 18th column, online at www.JimSmithColumns.com, I wrote about my favorite home improvements, including the adoption of LED lighting, which I prefer to CFL lighting and is far more energy efficient than incandescent lighting. In particular, I wrote glowingly, so to speak, about “daylight” LEDs — the whitest light available, so wellnamed for matching the color of bright sunlight.

In our office, I replaced all our “soft white” LED light bulbs with “daylight” bulbs to match the color of sunlight coming through our four Velux sun tunnels.

A reader of this column alerted me to some recent research which shows “daylight” LEDs to be harmful to vision, exacerbating macular degeneration, and disruptive of our circadian rhythm (important for good sleep) specifically be-

cause it simulates full natural sunlight.

I urge you to Google “daylight LEDs and health,” as I did, and you’ll find that one of the top links is for a June 2016 American Medical Association policy statement (adopted unanimously at their annual meeting) warning about health and safety problems associated with white LED lighting, so common now in the lighting of American streets.

The reader who alerted me to this topic suffers from early stage macular degeneration. He said he has replaced all

the LED lights in his home with incandescent bulbs. I’m satisfied that changing back to the lower “color temperature” LED bulbs will be enough. I have noticed that some LED fixtures (like the ones I installed in our conference room) have a switch allowing you to choose between “soft white,” “warm white” and “day-light” color temperature settings.

The sweet scent of fresh, homemade Italian food that emanates from the Dino’s Italian Food parking lot will be leaving Lakewood after 58 years.

Judy Duren has been around the restaurant, named after her father Dino (Dee-No) DiPaolo, since she was nine-years-old. She took control of the business when DiPaolo passed away in 2012 and has worked to carry on the restaurant as best as she could. But with building and equipment issues, Duren says it’s time to close the Lakewood classic on Sept. 30.

“You feel an accomplishment every day when you do a good job. It’s been my whole life,” said Duren. “I don’t have someone coming in. It would be a lot easier if I knew what was happening next.”

Hail that pounded down on the restaurant’s roof caused damage, while machines that are used to make the in-house Italian food like the dough rounder are starting to breakdown and wear out. Duren says it’s not economical to replace everything, and

Duren attributes the restaurant’s longevity in Lakewood to DiPaolo, who she describes as a community person. She said he gave back to schools in Lakewood, Golden, Wheatridge and Arvada by supporting numerous school activities like sports programs and after proms.

“The schools and kids are our bread and butter. When you do that kind of

stuff, parents pay attention to that,” said Duren. “The community responded to (DiPaolo).”

Some of her staff has worked at the restaurant for decades, including Lakewood resident Karen Heller who does bookkeeping for the restaurant.

She started working at Dino’s in the beginning of 1988.

“You get to know the customers and the extended families, and you

can imagine how many there have been over that many years. Third and fourth generations — they know me by my name,” said Heller. “It’s a very relaxed atmosphere.”

Since news got out that Dino’s is closing, the restaurant has been packed with customers who have been lined up looking to get one last taste of the restaurant’s signature lasagna, homemade noodles, the Dino Special sandwich and more.

“The outpouring of support is truly overwhelming. It’s a nice tribute to my dad,” said Duren.

Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul noted that he loved eating pizza from the restaurant along with their salad that comes with in-house made dressing and breadsticks.

“One of my favorite spots and an old school classic. (Dino’s is) a great family that will be missed by our entire community,” said Paul.

Estimated 5,000 students supplied with what they need

The day started with a series of lines for Loretta Ornelas and her three grandchildren: a line to get around the parking lot of Wheat Ridge’s Stevens Elementary, where cars had begun piling up along the front curb; a line to get inside the school; a line to get to the auditorium; and a line to get through the auditorium, where school supplies were being distributed.

But for Ornelas, falling into line with hundreds of other families was well worth it if it meant setting up her grandchildren for success.

In fact, the lines were no hassle at all.

“The organization’s been amazing.

We haven’t been waiting an hour,” she said. “The Action Center has the best people.”

On Monday, Aug. 5, 988 students showed up to Stevens Elementary for the Action Center’s annual school supply distribution, which invited families to the school from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that Monday through Friday to pick up supplies, many of which were donated by Cardel Homes.

Each year, the event is open to county residents, district families and “anybody who feels they’re in need,” Action Center communications coordinator Tawney Eisenbraun said.

“This is important for the kids; it helps them succeed in school, and they have the supplies to feel good and feel like they’re a part of the class,” she said.

Having brought her grandchildren to the event the previous year, Ornelas had been looking forward to the event’s return, she said. She and her family walked through the distribution with Superintendent Jason Glass, who kept up a Jeffco Public Schools tradition by showing his support at the event on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

“This is one way I can say ‘thank you’ on behalf of Jeffco Public Schools, to the Action Center and all of the volunteers and donors who have made this day happen,” he said.

“Kids in Jeffco come from all kinds of backgrounds. It’s so helpful to have an agency like the Action Center supporting families.”

Volunteer Programs Director Barbara Penning of the Action Center agreed, saying that with many in the county struggling to afford increasing rents and other expenses, the event represents a step toward easing families’ financial burden.

“We want to support all people, and to make sure people feel respected,” she said.

put smiles on students’ faces as they picked out their favorite colored backpacks, binders and “bonus” school supply items in the auditorium.

“We’re just here to hopefully get the best school supplies,” said seventhgrader James Basinger, a Ken Caryl Middle School student. “School supplies are kind of expensive, and this makes sure it’s not as hard for families.”

Deer Creek Middle School and Ken Caryl Middle School students Sam Lyall and Sam Allin, who showed up to the event as volunteers, also praised the distribution for its fun energy and important contributions.

For them, those elements have brought them back to volunteer year after year, Allin said. “It was a great experience, and I’m excited to do it again.”

Lyall agreed.

She likewise celebrated parents for reorganizing their work schedules and commuting to Wheat Ridge to ensure their children’s success this school year.

“We’ve had so many parents coming in on their lunch breaks saying, ‘I’ve got to do this for my kid,’” she said. “We’re working together to change the framework of our community.”

Celebrating 50 years of the Action Center The resource service assists over 20,000 residents each year

There’s a story John Covert, director of development for the Action Center, likes to tell when he’s giving tours of the resource center about Larry, a US veteran. Larry did two tours of duty, and when he returned home from service, he found his wife had turned to alcohol.

The veteran has two kids, and his household relied only on his income, making buying basic needs like food a challenge. But thanks to the Action Center, he was able to use its self-service grocery store, clothing bank and get connected to outside counseling services.

“I can’t imagine serving your country and coming back to find your family in disarray. His wife had to go into a rehab program,” said Covert. “I hope I never see Larry again. That’s what we’re after here at the Action

Over 20,000 people each year seek help from the Action Center, and this year the human-services nonprofit is celebrating its 50th anniversary. From being based in churches to getting its own property in Lakewood in the 1990s, the Action Center supports nearly 80 households per day.

The Action Center provides food, clothing, rental and utility assistance and

its Self-Sufficiency Pathways Program, a case management program that assists residents who are in difficult situations, like poverty. It recently hosted a school supply drive for families ahead of the upcoming 20192020 school year, and it has provided struggling families with gifts for children during the holiday season for decades.

Last year, the Action Center announced the closure of its 22-bed homeless shelter

Gonzalez will get food from the Action Center when bills start to pile up and groceries become difficult to afford.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Action Center will host a block party on Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 8755 W. 14 Ave. The free event will feature live music, children activities and food trucks.

“We wish that we didn’t have to be here for 50 years and that we could put ourselves out of business. We just want to show the community that we’re here, continuing to be a partner and a good neighbor,” said Brier.

The last, final diatribe on an unneeded, unnecessary word

I

, like, give up.

Once a year for the past eight years, I have written a column about the extra-grammatical use of the word “like” and its part in the ruination of the English language.

Each column has included the disclaimer that I am an imperfect grammarian myself, and I am not the ultimate arbiter of what is and is not good English.

But I know what I like, as it were.

I thought by now “like” would have gone away, but I see and hear that it hasn’t and now consider it a lost cause.

Therefore, this will be my final diatribe.

I refer anyone who cares about language to John McWhorter. McWhorter

verbal laziness.

There’s a title of a chapter in one of McWhorter’s books — “Words on the Move” — that summarizes the problem: “When Words Stop Being Words.”

It’s natural to hem and haw, and stumble a bit in casual conversations.

Everyone at a dinner table doesn’t speak in concise sentences, like they often do in films.

We stop, we start over, change in mid-word to something else.

McWhorter calls that “easing” language.

But for some, that eased language is all the time.

I have decided to concede to it after a recent experience in a dentist’s chair, which, for many, would be torture enough.

Back-to-school time calls for health checklist

A

ugust marks back-to-school season, an ideal time for parents in Colorado to help improve their children’s health.

Before schedules become packed with classes, homework and extracurricular activities, here’s a back-to-school health checklist to help give children a better chance to succeed inside and outside the classroom: Get a comprehensive eye exam About 80% of what children learn is through their eyes. With that in mind, a child’s first comprehensive eye exam should occur before age 1, again at age 3 and before entering school. If no vision issues are detected, school-aged children should have an exam at least once every two years. Also, a school’s vision screening is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam, as screenings can miss conditions such as poor eye alignment, focusing issues and farsightedness.

The inability to see clearly can affect a child’s physical, emotional and social development, which in turn can affect academic and athletic performance.

Children often don’t complain if their vision isn’t normal, so it’s important to look for possible signs such as squinting while reading or watching television, difficulty hitting or catching a ball, or headaches when watching 3D movies.

This is especially true for children, as untreated dental problems may diminish attention, decrease self-esteem and limit a child’s ability to learn at school.

Tooth decay is largely preventable, yet it ranks as the most common chronic disease among children.

About 33% of young kids (ages 2 to 8) have cavities in their baby teeth, and 20% of kids in the same age group have cavities in their adult teeth. With that in mind, parents should schedule regular dental exams every six months, especially at schools that require a back-to-school dental checkup.

Most shots are given by the time children are 2 years old, but some are administered into the teen years. If your child runs a low-grade fever or has swelling in the shot location after the immunization, these minor side effects typically last a couple days.

Apply a cool, wet washcloth on the sore area to help ease discomfort, but check with your doctor about the appropriateness of over-the-counter pain medications.

Meat alternatives grow in popularity National Thrift Store Day — save the date (and money)

Restaurant owners, health expert weigh in on benefits, challenges

one are the days when vegans and vegetarians couldn’t order a hamburger on the menu.

Alternative meat brands such as Impossible Foods and Beyond Burger are popping up in not only sit-down restaurants and grocery stores, but also fast food joints across the country.

They call it the future of protein: the Beyond Burger uses a mix of legumes, oils, rice protein, potato starch and other vegan-friendly ingredients, whereas the Impossible Burger is made from mostly soy.

Both substances are processed into a patty or sausage, or ground up into crumbles for recipes such as tacos.

According to Forbes.com, the plantbased craze is on the rise, with 95% of U.S. grocery stores selling plantbased meat products and an increasing number of restaurants adding similar options to their menus.

Wes Moralez, who owns the Brutal Poodle on South Broadway in Denver, decided to start serving the Beyond Burger in his heavy-metalthemed restaurant earlier this year.

The plant-based alternative looks and tastes like beef, he said, adding that the product fits his clientele.

“Here we have a niche concept that revolves around heavymetal punk rock,” Moralez said. “In that scene, there are a ton of vegans and vegetarians.”

But the growing popularity and limited supply of the products has presented challenges for some restaurants.

That was the case for Curtis Baca, manager of Steuben’s in Arvada.

“We would never be able to get them,” he said of the Impossible Burger. “So we couldn’t keep it on the menu.”

Instead his restaurant serves a plant-based veggie burger that is made in-house. While he doesn’t see

Jerry Casados, a plant-based nutritionist from Parker, switched his diet 12 years ago after several scares with heart disease, high blood pressure and weight gain.

Rather than moving forward with more medical tests, he decided to try a strict plant-based diet, combined with medication, for 30 days.

“My cholesterol dropped about 30 points,” Casados said. “My doctor said, ‘What did you do?’ I said, ‘I changed my diet,’ and that’s the last time I saw him.”

Casados, who worked in information technology, went back to school to become a nutritionist and is now off all medication. He and his wife host a yearly summit to inform others on the benefits of plant-based eating.

The approach, he said, is more holistic.

In addition to sales, there will also be a door prize, games like tag the treasure (where participants guess the price of items), and frequent shoppers can bring a friend and receive an extra stamp on their shopper card. Plus, 90 Degrees Chocolate food truck will be on hand as well serving sweet treats.

Perhaps the best part of the event is 100% of dollars spent go to fund Family Tree’s work. The children and families the organization has worked with have been in horrendous situations and need the support of the community. They benefit from Treasure Trunk in another way — they receive vouchers to shop there for things like interview outfits and other necessities.

“It’s going to be a fun event and a chance for people to get to know us,” Bolliger said. “There’s still a lot of people in our community who don’t know about us but being hyper local like we are is really important.”

Governor names new Colorado Poet Laureate STAFF REPORT

Colorado’s new poet laureate said he plans to widen poetry’s reach by visiting every corner of the state and connecting with people through poetry.

“I believe that my ability to impact and/or shape culture lives most-authentically in my connection to people through art,” Bobby LeFebre said in a news release. “I am invested in cultural change.

Poets are always at the forefront of influencing and changing culture, and before we see large-scale social or political change, it is the heart and soul of issues that change first.”

LeFebre was named by Gov. Jared Polis as the new Colorado apoet laureate, succeeding Joseph Hutchison.

“Bobby LeFebre has an amazing ability to empower and connect communities through the wisdom of his words; that is why we are confident he will make a fantastic Poet Laureate,” Polis said in the news release. “He embodies the spirit of a ‘Colorado for All’ where everyone is included. I know he will be a strong advocate for the arts and art education as a way to bring us together.”

LeFebre is an award-winning writer, performer, and cultural and social worker with “indigenous roots in the San Luis Valley that predate statehood.”

LeFebre serves as a commissioner for the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs, fellow of the

Intercultural Leadership Institute, and an advisory board member of the Latino Cultural Arts Center and many other cultural organizations, including the Clyfford Still Museum and La Raza.

As a co-founder of Cafe Cultura, he also produces Interfest, an arts and ideas festival “for liberationists to radically engage, boldly express and joyously unify as a community.”

The poet laureate position was created to promote an appreciation of poetry in Colorado and to honor outstanding Colorado poets, the news release said. The poet laureate serves as an active advocate for poetry, literacy, and literature by participating in readings and other events at schools, libraries, literary festivals and the state Capitol.

The poet laureate will also provide the governor with an annual account of the impact and success of the Colorado poet laureate program and prepare a poem for the opening of the legislative session upon request.

Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book and Colorado Creative Industries jointly support the honorary position, providing a $2,000 honoraria and up to $2,000 in travel expenses related to public presentations for each of the four years of the term.

“We’re excited to introduce new features for the Denver Parade of Homes this year,” Tracy Sandoval, 2019 chair of the Parade of Homes and marketing manager at Meritage Homes, said in a news release. “The Chefs on Parade and Paws on Parade events and Samsung Connected Home will provide attendees unique opportunities to experience the Parade and see the latest in home trends.”

The parade will feature newly designed model and custom homes, nine of which are luxury “dream homes,” by 20 area residential builders. The Samsung Connected Home will be in the dream home by Lokal Homes at Two Bridges. According to the news release, the home conveys the future of connected living through simple steps and home appliance technologies that allow homeowners to take control and connect remotely via smart devices while away from home.

Samsung is the presenting sponsor of this year’s Parade of Homes.

Chefs on Parade will pair area chefs and restaurants with participating parade homes to delver a traveling gourmet party. The chef event will be Aug. 17-18.

Paws on Parade, which will be Aug. 24-25, will pair participating homes with Denver area animal rescue and shelter organizations to provide a chance to meet rescue pups looking for a home.

Fraudulent filing demands continue, state warns STAFF REPORT

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office is again alerting small business owners about more potentially misleading notices requesting an extra fee for a third party to file business documents.

According to a news release, the Secretary of State’s Office has continued to receive reports about third parties sending additional deceptive and misleading solicitations to Colorado businesses. The Colorado secretary of state

maintains an easy-to-use online filing system for businesses.

Use of a third party to complete filings with the secretary of state is not required.

The newest versions of these solicitations offer to obtain a “Certificate of Good Standing” or a “Certificate of Existence” from the Secretary of State’s Office for a fee. Any business can download a Certificate of Good Standing for free from the secretary of state’s website at www.sos.state.co.us. In addition, the office does not offer anything called a Certificate of

Existence.

Another misleading solicitation offers to file a “Statement Curing Delinquency” with the office to bring a business back into good standing. In addition to the required state filing fee, the form requires payment of a processing fee.

These misleading solicitations may appear similar to a government form, cite specific Colorado statutes and require a fee. They might contain your business entity’s actual business ID number and date of formation, as reflected in the

online. Business owners can find instructions to directly file business forms at www.sos. state.co.us under the Business Organizations heading.

“Once again we are seeing people trying to profit off of misleading and unnecessary solicitations to business owners.

Faith Christian trap team takes aim at national championship

When Coach Mark Passamaneck started the trap shooting team at Faith Christian High School in 2018, he had no way of knowing that his athletes — some of whom had no shooting experience, some of whom had no sports experience and one of whom had expected the team to be a pottery club because of a flyer typo — would go to the championships just a year later.

But after one season as a school club and another as a letter sport, the team “swept the podium at State for team, varsity and junior varsity” back in June, Passamaneck said.

By July, the team found itself taking 22nd place at the 2019 National Championships after securing one of 80 spots in the final round.

The team is one of nine Colorado schools in the USA High School Clay Target League, which requires students to earn safety certification before they can participate, according to the league’s website.

As coach, Passamaneck said he oversees this process to ensure the safety of his athletes.

“The safety aspect is stressed significantly more than the competition aspect for new students,” he said.

Faith Christian senior Aviana Large agreed. Large joined the team as a junior and plans to participate again in the spring 2020 season.

“It’s more about learning about gun safety and keeping people safe, which is something everyone should know,” she said. “My favorite part was watching everyone — no matter where they started, they improved.”

Passamaneck agreed, saying that each of last season’s 30 athletes came into their own with the sport, regardless of where they came from.

“We have the widest mix of backgrounds and personalities of any club in the school,” he said. “The valedictorian was on the team, we have varsity athletes. It’s pretty amazing.”

For Passamaneck’s son, senior Blake Passamaneck, that diversity allowed him to compete with students he otherwise wouldn’t have, he said — as well as some he’s competed with before on other sports teams.

Enroll in free and reduced lunch Families are still invited to explore whether their student qualifies for free or reducedprice lunch, with applications open now. Families enrolled in the program last year must reapply for the 2019-2020 school year if they have not done so already since the start of reenrollment on July 1.

Having played baseball for the high school throughout the past three years, Blake said trap adds a new twist into competition.

“Baseball is very competitive, but when I went to State for trap, I felt relaxed,” Blake said. “Just shooting is probably the most fun part about it.”

The sport has gained momentum both within the school and nationwide, Mark said. He suggested the reason could be the “visual feedback and instant gratification” of the sport, and that more students and parents have developed an understanding of the sport’s purpose.

“There comes a time when we can no longer play soccer or football or baseball,” he said, “but with a shoot-

ing sport, as long as you can see and move your hands, you can shoot.”

As the sport grows in popularity, a number of parents from nearby schools have asked him if their children can shoot on the Faith Christian team, he said, with the next closest team to Arvada located about 60 miles away at Platte Valley High School in Kersey, Colo.

“The sport has been growing.

There’s something that happens to teens when you treat them like adults and put a firearm in their hands; it’s a significant step,” he said. “As a coach, I’m investing in making better citizens.”

Likewise praising the numerous benefits of the sport, Large encouraged nearby schools to establish trap teams of their own.

“I hope more schools consider offering this as a sport, and I hope this could become a CHSAA-sanctioned sport,” she said. “This is a sport anyone could get involved in.”
