Judge shelves Colorado Coalition for the Homeless project proposal Coalition wanted to turn land near the Fed Center into homeless assistance

The proposed Colorado Coalition for the Homeless project to develop 59 acres of land near the Federal Center in Lakewood into a facility to assist homeless people was swatted down by U.S. District Judge William Martinez on July 1.

Last year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services denied sale of the land to the coalition, located south of West Sixth Avenue and east of Union Boulevard — a move Martinez backed in his July 1 ruling.

Cathy Alderman, a spokesperson for the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, said the organization has no plans to appeal the ruling and that it did as much advocacy as it could for the homeless project.

“We are very disappointed in the ruling because it means hundreds of

families and individuals in the Lakewood area are no closer to accessing safe shelter space or affordable housing and the numbers of people experiencing homelessness will continue to rise,” said Alderman in an email.

Due to the Mckinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, a law that requires federal agencies to identify and make federal property available to local governments, states and nonprofits to aid homeless people, the coalition had the first shot at purchasing the land.

But last year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services denied the coalition’s $120 million project, saying it had not explained thoroughly enough how it would finance it. Martinez agreed with the department’s decision last year. “(The court) finds that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services did not act arbitrarily, capriciously, or contrary to law when it denied the coalition’s application,” Martinez wrote in his ruling.

“We’re just trying to work out the mechanics of it so that it’s fair for everybody,” said Stebbins.

According to Stacie Oulton, a spokesperson for Lakewood, the land is zoned for urban-scale mixed use, meaning that office and residential uses up to 12 stories high can be placed in the area.

Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul said the city had previously had a plan to use the land for a mix used, residential-type center, but it got scrubbed. “(The coalition’s proposed project is) kind of an old fashion plan of putting all people of one type in that area. We want to help the homeless, but this project as planned is not the right plan for our community, and it’s not the right plan to help the homeless,” said Paul.

Protests converge outside immigrant detention facility Two groups with different approaches condemn U.S. policy

A Mexican flag flew over Aurora’s immigrant detention facility the evening of July 12, as two very different protests converged to condemn American immigration policy.

Hundreds of protesters, organized by a group called “Lights for Liberty” that arranged protests in cities around Colorado and the nation, stood along Oakland Street in north Aurora outside the detention center

run by GEO Group Inc. The private facility holds immigrants for processing by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. The facility has come under fire in recent months amid disease outbreaks and allegations of poor conditions. U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, an Aurora Democrat who represents Colorado’s 6th Congressional District, recently announced plans to conduct weekly inspections of the facility.

I-70 truck driver case sent to district court Case stems from deadly crash that killed four people

Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, the truck driver accused of causing the deadly April crash at I-70, will stand trial after a Jefferson County judge determined that prosecutors

provided a probable cause to send the case to district court.

Aguilera-Mederos is facing 41 charges, including attempted firstdegree assault and four counts of vehicular homicide. The incident left Stanley Politano, 69, Doyle Harrison, 61, William Bailey, 67, and Miguel Angel Lamas AguileraArrellano, 24, dead. Six Mederos others were also left with serious injuries.

The case stems from a fiery, multiple car crash in the eastbound lanes of I-70 at Denver West Parkway on April 25. An affidavit reads that 28 cars were engulfed by a large fire. Aguilera-Mederos, 23, is accused of losing control of a semi-tractor he was driving.

Police say he was driving 85 mph when he crashed into stopped vehicles near Colorado Mills Parkway after passing “runaway truck ramp” signs.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 3.

My Favorite Home Improvements When Purchasing a New-to-Me Home

Who doesn’t want to make some improvements on a home they have just purchased? Here are my top favorites.

Energy efficiency is very important to Rita and me, so the first thing we do is pay for an energy audit by someone like Andrew Sams of Alpine Building Performance to identify opportunities for making the home more air-tight. This would likely include blowing more insulation into walls or ceilings and caulking around windows. It might also include installing an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) to bring fresh air into the home using a heat exchanger that warms cold outside air in the winter and cools hot outside air in the summer.

I love bringing sunlight into a home,

not with traditional skylights but with sun tunnels. Solatube is a well-known brand but I prefer the Velux brand. I had Mark Lundquist of Design Skylights install a 22-inch Velux sun tunnel in my windowless garage and a 14-inch one in my windowless laundry room — and four large Velux sun tunnels in the Golden Real Estate office. We love them!

Speaking of sunlight, we replaced every light bulb is our house with LEDs which are “daylight” color (like sunlight), not soft white or warm white.

Don’t you hate climbing a curb to enter your driveway? Developers install those mountable curbs the entire length of the streets in new subdivisions, not knowing exactly where each driveway will be. One of the first things I would do (and have done) is to hire a concrete company to replace the mountable curb with a smooth entrance. It cost over $2,000 for my 3-car-wide driveway, but I love it every time I enter from the street! Caution: the sidewalk will now be sloped slightly and pedestrians could more easily slip on ice, so be prepared to salt your sidewalk to eliminate icing!

When your gas forced air furnace needs replacing, consider replacing it

with a heat-pump furnace. And when your gas water heater needs replacing, I recommend buying a heat-pump water heater. Once you’ve replaced both, you will have also eliminated the most common sources of carbon monoxide poisoning in your home.

Other improvements I’d consider include: Replacing carpeting with ceramic or porcelain tile in bathrooms; replacing regular glass with Low-E glass on southfacing windows; replacing fluorescent fixtures (such as in garage) with those great 2x2, inch-thick LED panels sold at Home Depot for under $100. Love ’em!

The aftermath of Question 200 A developer, real estate agent, affordable housing agency and a resident sound off on what’s next

Kyle Zeppelin has his fingerprints all over Denver’s RiNo neighborhood. Zeppelin, the co-president of Zeppelin Development has helped develop major projects — including Freight Residences, a 48-unit RiNo apartment complex.

Despite being a successful developer, Zeppelin, who doesn’t currently operate in Lakewood, sees no problem with the recently passed

Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative, which will limit new home construction to one percent per year and will require Lakewood City Council to approve and hold meetings regarding residential projects with 40 units, or more.

“I understand why Lakewood voters took that step. These communities are being turned over to market rate developers that have a shortterm interest in making as much profit in the shortest amount of time as possible and moving on to the next thing,” said Zeppelin, who said he wants what makes sense for the environment and community.

On July 2, Lakewood residents approved the initiative, known as Question 200, by a little more than a five percent margin. The initiative was propelled by Cathy Kentner, amid concerns of over development, lack

and policies that separate the children of asylum seekers from their parents.

The group drew a broad range of participants, including church groups, parents with young children and seniors.

Nadia Singh, of Denver, who said she is the daughter of Guyanese immigrants, said she attended to spread a message of love and peace.

“My parents came here to give me a better life,” Singh said. “I know in my heart that everyone in that facility is here for the same reason: to seek a better life. People are equals, regardless of their immigration status, and we should treat them the way we would want to be treated ourselves.”

Meanwhile, another group called the March to Close the Concentration Camps pushed past the barricade and took down the American flag, Colorado state flag and GEO Group flag in front of the facility.

In their place, the protesters raised a Mexican flag, an upside-down Blue Lives Matter flag splattered in red paint and a homemade flag with an antipolice message.

A pair of protesters used an aerosol can and a lighter to set fire to the Colorado state flag, while others stomped on the American flag.

Back on the street, the Lights for Liberty organizers pleaded with the more radical group to retreat, saying their tactics put the rest of the protest in jeopardy.

that police had issued a dispersal order and were massing nearby to arrest protesters, though the Aurora Police Department said via Twitter that no such order had been given.

Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz addressed his department’s approach in a statement on social media.

“There are those who believe that once the flags were removed and burned we should have moved in on the massive crowd,” he wrote, in part. “I completely share those sentiments, but it’s also important that we are strategic in doing what we can to not escalate a situation to where our officers and innocent protestors could get hurt.”

Metz said police would be reviewing “any available video in order to identify and pursue prosecution of those involved in criminal behavior.”

By 9 p.m. many members of the group at the entrance of the facility had departed, leaving the Lights for Liberty group to hold its planned candlelight and flashlight vigil for immigrant detainee rights.

An organizer lamented the actions of the group that crossed the barricade, saying their actions forced many protest participants whose immigration status is in question to flee for fear of arrest.

Thomas Lopez Jr., an organizer and activist with the International Indigenous Youth Council, said he hoped the protest was only the beginning.

“It’s really good to see our community here,” Lopez said. “I hope we can keep this energy up and focus it on something positive. Whatever people choose to do, I hope it’s non-violent and with drive and intention.”

Season 3 airs of show that’s ‘putting Arvada on the map’ TV show documents family’s renovation of farmhouse at 74th and Kipling

When Rodman Schley first set out to reduce his carbon footprint, he never expected that his quest to learn more about activities like green building and beekeeping would turn into a public television show.

But the more he learned, the more

he wanted to share his newfound knowledge with as many people as possible.

“I didn’t know what I was doing,” he said. “It was mostly me going out and fumbling around. And I thought, `why not teach people the same thing?’”

More than six years later, Rodman and his wife, Gina, are releasing the third season of Urban Conversion.

The Arvada couple said the new season will tie together lessons learned in seasons one and two as the couple renovates a farmhouse near 74th Avenue and Kipling Street. For the past year and a half, the Schleys have worked toward platinum certification for the house on the LEED environmental impact scale.

Buildings that qualify for platinum certification, which is the highest level on the scale, must earn 80 out of 100 points after being judged on five categories, including sustainability and water efficiency.

The house is “about 98% finished,” Rodman said, and the family looks forward to sharing every step of the process in the upcoming season — which was full of new excursions, to sand dunes and hot air balloons, and unexpected challenges, such as waking up before the sunrise and track-

ing down a lost drone.

The Schleys said they are unsure whether they will create a season four or what their next project would be for that season. Rodman added that, depending on the reception of season three, the family would be more than happy to continue the show.

“I thought it was going to be a lot simpler along the way, and it was a lot of work,” he said — but, he joked, “We’re still married, which is awesome.”

For both Rodman and Gina, the response the show has drawn from all over the country has been incredibly rewarding.

“People reach out from all over asking, ‘how do I do it?’” she said. “Those are the types of emails that really make me feel like, `yes, I’m glad we did this.’”

ver the Fourth of July weekend, Little Man Ice Cream opened its new Denver factory on West Colfax Avenue.

The factory, 4411 W. Colfax Ave., has been under construction for the last five years, but Little Man began making ice cream there last July. The space has a retail counter were customers can order flights of ice cream with various toppings. Little Man will also sell pints and ice cream cakes at the location.

Ted Shultz, the architect for the project said he was inspired by seeing ice cream machines spin to mix ingredients together. He added that he used the theme of revolution throughout the factory, which has windows into the kitchen area so customers can see the ice cream being made. There is a seating area and a small upstairs landing which features a kid space with a slide.

Owner and founder of Little Man, Paul Tamburello, said that he wanted the factory on West Colfax because he was born in the neighborhood and wanted to create a community space there. The factory can be rented out for special events.

Well, as it turns out, there is an ‘I’ in team

T

here’s only one of me (you’ll be happy to know), but from now on I want to be thought of as Team Craig.

Calling yourself or yourselves a team is the latest and the greatest, and I don’t want to be left out.

My dentist and her hygienists are a team.

My car is repaired by a team.

A team made my pizza last week, and a team will check my eyesight when I have my annual exam.

There’s a home improvements and repairs outfit that calls itself a team.

When a word becomes a movement, I want to ride it until I get saddle sores.

If I had to stretch things, I could say my echo and my shadow are Team Craig teammates.

Maybe you remember the Ink Spots and their great song, “We Three.”

This (for once) is a true story. When I gave my students a QUIET weekend ink drawing DESPERATION project, I told them to listen to the Ink Spots.

One kid thought I meant I wanted them to listen to the ink spots, and he was serious.

There are, in fact, teams. Every high school and college in Craig Marshall the State of Colorado has a number Smith of teams, and they compete against teams from other schools and states.

I have a harder time thinking of a guy wearing grease for an aftershave and leaning into the engine of my car to adjust the carburetor as a member of a team. But it sounds good.

I know some writers have ghost writers and editors and research people, but at Team Craig it’s really just Craig.

Unless you count Harry.

And why not? He inspires a number of columns each year, and he’s practically a dependent.

If you are a dog owner, you know what I mean. His veterinarian bills alone? Get out of here.

In her own way (discretion will limit details), Jennifer plays for Team Craig too.

Skaggs story teaches us that tomorrow is not promised

n July 1st, just over two weeks ago, a young man by the name of Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room in Dallas. This was very unexpected — Tyler was just weeks shy of his 28th birthday, and a professional athlete. He was a pitcher for the Anaheim HITTING Angels.

Boy, that’s a HOME downer lede.

Tyler wore number 45, and, in his honor, last Friday night, every player for the Angels wore number 45. And that wasn’t all. Tyler’s mom threw out the ceremonial first pitch of the game; Michael Alcorn the best player on the planet, Mike Trout, one of Tyler’s teammates, hit the first pitch he saw 454 feet; the two pitchers for the Angels that night combined to throw a no-hitter, the first combined no-hitter in major league baseball since July 13, 1991, which happens to be . . . wait for it ... Tyler Skaggs’ birthday.

How can you not be romantic about baseball?

And it brings with its treacle another word that is making the rounds.

“About.”

Check it out, brothers and sisters, and count the number of times in a day you read or hear that something is “about” something, as in it’s “all about you.”

It’s a word of equivocation between the point being made and the punch line.

Of course, all of the very cool numerological occurrences surrounding Tyler Skaggs’ death don’t, in any way, diminish the tragedy of his untimely death, or, I’m sure, the pain his loved ones feel. Perhaps, the only good that could come out of it is to bring more attention to his death, to make people more aware of one, simple thing: Tomorrow is not promised.

In 2010, the Washington Nationals brought a promising young pitcher up to the major leagues named Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg was a freak of nature — big, strong kid who could throw the ball 100 mph and drop a wicked curve ball off the kitchen table. However, in 2011, that young man developed elbow pain, and had to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair it. He was out for that year, and only came back partway into the 2012 season, with the team and his agent putting him on a strict limit as far as innings he could pitch. The problem was, the Nationals played phenomenal baseball that summer, and looked like the favorites to win the World Series.

Making the most of those lazy days of summer

he other day I posted something on social media that included a brief reference to those lazy days of summer.

The post was really about something else, and a reminder that we should enjoy our lazy days of summer, take time for vacations, and relax when we can.

WINNING However, we should also stay inspired WORDS and motivated and avoid the lazy days of summer hangover and doldrums.

You know that feeling, right? Those days where it might be beautiful and sunny and we wish we were hiking, Michael Norton biking, golfing, fishing, at the lake or at the beach. Our focus on work or other projects seems to drift into the distance as we daydream about being outside. Or maybe it’s those other days where it is so hot, so humid and sticky, and we just feel drained and tired and we settle in to our air-conditioned homes, cars, or anywhere we can find relief from

For Strasburg, that’s been okay — he is still one of the best pitchers in baseball, and it can be argued that the shutdown extended his career. But, for the Nationals…

I would never advocate living just for today. Obviously, as a teacher, a lot of what we work for is tomorrow,

For what it’s worth (Buffalo Springfield, 1967), I believe in getting it said, with honesty and decency.

the heat. Those are the days where our energy levels bottom out.

Mondays and Fridays seem to be the hardest days as we look to starting our weekend early or extending our weekend beyond Sunday. I have one friend, Chris, who likes to refer to his week as a “Thur-Mon,” as he starts on Thursday and goes through Monday. And there are others who save up their vacation time and PTO days and take these extended weekends during the summer instead of taking a full week or two here and there.

It’s the “getting back to work” part, or “getting back into the work mood and mode” that we struggle with, isn’t it? At least that was some of the feedback I have received after my post. It is almost like we need a vacation from our vacation, a vacation from our weekend, or we just need to find our summer motivation, energy, and inspiration.

And this is exactly where having solid goals, plans, dreams, and objectives come into play. When we know where it is we want to go, who and where we want to be, and what we want to have in life, we can usually fight through the lazy days of

summer, or in my friend Chris’ case, the crazy days of summer. We allow ourselves the rest and relaxation we deserve, we enjoy those moments of daydreaming and easy peaceful feelings, but we remember our purpose and passion, and our “why” so that we maintain our momentum.

Tom Ziglar, in his book “Choose to Win,” talks about the importance of having a “why,” understanding our “why,” and having our internal compass aligned with our true north.

So, as we enjoy our summer, put our feet up a little bit, drift off for a few minutes, hours, or days, let’s keep our “why” in front of us, our plans and goals visible, and make sure we do not fall too far behind on where it is we really want to be.

Personally, I have found that when I allow myself to drift off a bit and daydream, I try and let my creativity come to life. I recognize that I am daydreaming or wandering a bit, so

I intentionally start to dream about my goals and dreams. I think about what I can do differently or better, what I should do more of or do less of, and what I might start doing or stop doing that would be helpful to reaching my ultimate goals and achieving my dreams.

People who live in the future are either incorrigible worriers or hopeless dreamers.

Today has a special wonder to it that deserves your full attention.

Especially during these hot, lazy days of summer. Every day is an opportunity to do something special, to get better at something, to invest in yourself or somebody else. And, as soon as the sun sets, this day is over — it’s never coming back. Did you make good use of your time?

Carol owned Mesa Imports in Lakewood for more than 30 years. She was a member of Jefferson Unitarian Church for 40 years. Survivors includer her children, Scott (Karen), Stacey (David), Stuart, and Spencer; her grandchildren Nena, Caleb, Camille, Max, and Spencer; and her great-grandchildren, Tafari and Elijah.

A celebration of her life will be held July 20 at 3 p.m. at Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden.

Opportunities abound to enjoy the great outdoors off the ground

oloradans are known for their love of outdoor adventures.

Traditionally, these activities take place on solid ground.

However, the Denver metro area also offers plenty of high-adrenaline experiences that get participants off the ground and into the air.

Soaring above Golden Paragliding is kind of like sitting in a lawn chair in the sky, said David Hach, co-owner of Paraglide Tandem, a Golden-based company that serves Colorado residents and tourists.

“It really feels like we’re flying like a bird,” Hach said. “And the views are amazing.”

Paraglide Tandem started in 2013 and today, the Paraglide Tandem team is made up of eight instructors, all certified by the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association as tandem pilots.

The experience lasts about two hours, Hach said. The instructor will meet the client at about 10 a.m.

Hach said — in the parking area at the base of Mount Zion, which is near the Chimney Gulch Trailhead off U.S. 6 in Golden. From the parking lot, the two take a five-to-10-minute walk to the launch site, which is near the Colorado School of Mines’ M on Mount Zion.

“Then we sit back, relax and watch the weather for a bit,” Hach said.

The instructor will then get the client geared up and they’ll do a practice launch. Then, the two step into the 42-square-meter glider — the guest in front and the pilot in the back.

“We wait for a nice gust of wind, and then we launch,” Hach said, adding there’s no free-fall involved. “We’ll soar around for as long as we can.

And if they want, we’ll do tricks.”

Generally, a flight will last about five to 15 minutes, depending on conditions, Hach said.

“I love the reaction that everybody has,” he said. “They’re always surprised how smooth and mellow it is.”

Paragliding is a “risky sport,” Hach said, but Paraglide Tandem instructors are well-versed in the sport and they will only take people out “when conditions are perfect for a safe flight.”

Hach went paragliding for the first time on his fifth birthday in 1993.

“I’ve been hooked ever since,” he said. “It’s my passion and it’s fun to be able to share it with people.”

Cultural fun under the summer sun

atino culture is a vibrant and dynamic one that defies stereotypes and easy categorization, and with the Latino population in the state and country steadily growing, exploring it can be both illuminating and fun.

For the past four years, the Westminster Latino Festival has aimed to do just that — celebrate the traditions and contemporary experiences of the Latino community, not only for its members, but everyone who wants to enjoy it.

“The focus is for first, second, third and the COMING ‘everybody else’ ATTRACTIONS generation,” explained Manuel Tejada, founder and president of the festival. “The idea behind the festival is its an event of diversity for everybody to enjoy.”

Held from 11 Clarke Reader a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 at the RTD Westminster Station, 6995 Grove St., and its surrounding streets, the festival brings a little of something for everyone.

The event begins with a concert by the Denver Municipal Band, playing a special repertoire featuring Latin beats with arrangements of signature pieces from the whole continent. Music is an integral part of the event, and throughout the day there will be folkloric dances from Mexico and other countries, salsa demos, and a variety of live bands featuring salsa, cumbia, R&B and Latin Jazz.

There will be an exhibition of lowriders, courtesy of Longmontbased Suave Car Club, as well as “luchadores” performing their stunts taking photos. New this year is a second stage that will feature karaoke, games and more fun.

“We’re ways trying to make it better, and you can see the growth every year,” Tejada said. “We used to host this at the library, but we had such great acceptance from the community and neighbors, we had move it to a bigger place.”

Tapping into the creative side of the community, the festival is launching “Color Westminster”, an opportunity for local artists to create their art on a series of blank canvas that will be placed at the festival.

Food and drink haven’t been forgotten - a variety of food trucks and vendors will be on hand providing delicious Mexican and South American food, shaved ice, ice cream, churros, and fresh squeezed lemonades. There will also be a beer garden.

Get a rush on ropes course Compared to other experiences that get people off the ground, the ropes course at Adventure Golf & Raceway in Westminster is a safe way to challenge your physical abilities, while still getting that adrenaline rush.

“People enjoy the controlled environment,” said Allen Brown, the managing director of Adventure Golf & Raceway. The ropes course “gives them a way to get that rush without the potential to get hurt.”

The Adventure Ropes Course is a two-level course that offers 25 different challenges with varying degrees of difficulty. Perched above a giant maze made of constructed walls, the first level of the ropes course is about 10 or 12 feet off the ground, Brown said, and the second level is about 20 feet off the ground. Challenges range from walking across tires to navigating a slackline. People are harnessed in, and once on the course, they choose their own path, Brown said.

“People tend to be really nervous when they first try it,” Brown said.

“But then, we see that they gain confidence and start to enjoy the interaction with the device. And then there’s some people who don’t want to come down.”

Clarke’s Concert of the Week - Beck and Cage the Elephant at Fiddler’s Green Being the music nerd that I am, I find the way shows with multiple artists on the bill are structured to be fascinating. It’s rarely about cultural impact and almost always about newness and popularity.

Such is the case at The Night Running Tour, which makes a stop at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre, 6350 Greenwood Plaza Blvd. in Greenwood Village, at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23.

The show features alt-rock legend Beck co-headlining with newer alt-pop standard bearers Cage the Elephant.

Which is all well and good, but the third (and lower) group on the bill is Texas’ Spoon, a group responsible for some of the best indie rock of this century.

Go on an adventure Located within Philip S. Miller Park, Castle Rock Adventure Park offers three main activities — a zipline tour, the Epic Adventure Tower and the Sky Trek.

Each has a different draw, said Adam White, general manager of Castle Rock Adventure Park, but all of them will get your heart pumping.

“They’re different than anything else you can find,” White said. “And you get great views, with essentially no ob-

structions because you’re so high up.”

The Sky Trek is Castle Rock Adventure Park’s newest attraction. It features four levels — the top is 50 feet off the ground — and 120 different obstacles. The Sky Trek’s Ninja Warrior Experience features a course similar to NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” TV series, White said.

The Epic Adventure Tower is “the destination for your adrenaline junkie,” White said.

Among other features, it includes a 42-foot climbing wall, four rappelling stations and three different platforms, including the 75-foot Eagles Nest, which offers a harnessed freefall.

The Castle Rock Adventure Park opened in 2015 with the zipline tour.

The zipline tour provides an adrenaline experience that’s not too overwhelming, White said, but “it’s still a lot of fun flying through the air.”

The zipline tour takes about two to three hours to complete. There’s about a mile of hiking, which is split up among the 10 ziplines. Along the route, each line gets longer and faster.

People take the tour in small groups accompanied by a guide certified by the Association for Challenge Course Technology.

People enjoy different kinds of outdoor adventures that gives them a break from their normal, daily routines, White said.

“Most people’s day-in-and-day-out lives are spent on the ground,” he said.

“Getting off the ground is inherently different. And you get to experience the season and the views — the best that nature can offer.”

‘Rattler’ racing series on a roll Riders of all ages and levels gather for monthly “party”

The afternoon sun was hot, and the trails dusty as dozens of men and women gathered at the start line of the Rattler “Pure Venom” mountain bike race in Bear Creek Lake Park, on July 10.

“My goal is to just pass one person,” said Rob Ford, the only entrant in the “fat bike” category.

A nearby rider laughed and said he’d probably be the one to pass.

“Try to kick my chain off when you pass though, so I have an excuse!” the rider joked.

Then the race began, with wave after wave of bikers out to conquer the 17.8-mile singletrack course.

At the lap/finish line emcee Steve Oberembt called out each racer’s name with enthusiasm, as a crowd of supporters and earlier competitors cheered, and enjoyed complimentary beer and hot dogs.

Teens and younger, many of whom had competed earlier in the afternoon, milled around the finish line, occasionally cheering on a parent as they passed by, or trying to answer the em-

Oberembt, who said he’s seen the Rattler series grow from 105 participants to more than 285 in the four years it has operated, says he loves seeing the local mountain bike community in action, “just to see people come together, smile, laugh have a good time promoting a healthy sport.”

On the course, the mood is cordial.

“Passing on your left, thanks!” says the leader of a pack of women, all wearing the same team jersey.

“Hey nice job, keep it up!” says a route marshal at the top of a particularly nasty climb.

“Ughuuuugh,” says a distinctly out

of shape journalist who was experiencing a calf cramp generating mindaltering amounts of pain. At some point, Ford on his fat bike does indeed pass him by.

The Rattler series features several competition categories, ranging in age from the “8 and under” riders who race around a 1.3-mile course, to the senior division, with special divisions in between for different skill levels and different types of bikes. On July 10, the youngest racer was 4 years old, and the oldest was 57.

“The range is terrific,” said Oberembt. “You’ve got your 8-year-old future Olympians out here racing around and having fun, alongside some of the top athletes in the state, Thomas Herman to name one.”

Herman, a Lakewood resident, won the Grand Traverse 41-mile mountain bike race between Crested Butte and Aspen last year, and took first place in this year’s Bailey HUNDitO, before winning the Men’s Open division on July 10.

Oberembt says there’s one man responsible for the Rattler series.

“It’s totally Dave’s creation — Dave’s work of art,” he says, referring to Dave Nuscianisi.

According to Nuscianisi, who is currently a mountain bike coach for Highlands Ranch High School, the racing series started initially as a “more low-key” event to help get area high school mountain bike racers some experience before state competition.

For his part, Nuscianisi says the growth of the cycling series has been one of natural progression.

“All I’m doing is hosting a party and everybody shows up,” he said.

“It’s a friendly group of people, very supportive, that’s why it’s grown like this.”

Part of the credit for the race series’ popularity also belongs to the scenery and trails of Bear Creek Lake Park, E and the city of Lakewood’s Regional B Park Supervisor Drew Sprafke, acM cording to Nuscianisi. d “They’ve been so easy to work with,” said Nuscianisi. “They’re the best land managers we’ve worked with.”

That’s saying something, because Nuscianisi has expanded into organizing a junior racing cup in Bailey Colorado, and a three-day mountain bike stage race in Winter Park.

Nuscianisi says he hopes the sport, and the race series continues to grow in popularity.

“The neatest thing,” he said, “is just getting to see more kids get out there and get into this sport.”
