17 county jails receive funding for opioid treatment Medication-assisted treatment getting $1.9 million in assistance from state

The Colorado Department of Human Services, Office of Behavioral Health has awarded funding to 17 county jails to continue or initiate medication-assisted treatment for people with opioid-use disorder.

According to a news release, the state is awarding nearly $1.9 million to the 17 county sheriff ’s offices that applied for MAT funding through Sept. 29, 2020. MAT combines medication with behavioral therapy and is considered to be the most effective way to treat opioid-use disorder, the release said.

Up to this point, the Office of Behavioral Health has funded medication-assisted treatment services in five of the 17 county jails: Boulder, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson and Pueblo. Nearly 500 people received medication-assisted treatment before or upon release from jail through this funding since 2017.

it, including treatment for people who are incarcerated, in many cases as a result of their addiction,” Robert Werthwein, director of the Office of Behavioral Health, said in the release. “We know that the risk of opioid overdose drastically increases after a period of abstinence such as incarceration, and intervening at this juncture is key to our efforts to reduce overdoses.”

the release said. When looking at heroin-specific overdoses in the same population, the study found that formerly incarcerated individuals’ likelihood of overdose death increased to 74 times the norm within the first two weeks after release, the release said.

The Office of Behavioral Health

is providing the funding through the State Opioid Response Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and thanks to recently passed legislation (SB 19-008), Colorado has ensured this funding can continue even after the grant is over.

Attorney representing I-70 truck driver arrested Robert Corry is accused of criminal mischief, first-degree kidnapping and other charges STAFF REPORT

Robert Corry, the attorney representing the truck driver involved in the fiery Interstate 70 crash that left four people dead, was arrested June 14 on suspicion of criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, motor vehicle theft and firstdegree kidnapping, Denver police reported.

According to an affidavit, a

woman was picking up Corry from Denver International Airport when he grabbed her and said he was being chased by Arabs. Corry rushed the woman into her vehicle and drove off, the affidavit said. He reportedly drove aggressively as he struck other vehicles and yelled at people. The woman asked to get out of the vehicle, but Corry told her to be quiet or “he would kill her,” the affidavit reads.

As Corry continued to drive, traffic slowed him down and the woman jumped out and called 911.

Corry is due back in a Denver District Court on July 1. He remains in jail with no bond.

Corry is representing Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, the truck driver in the April 25 crash, who has been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide, six counts of first-degree assault and 24 counts of attempted first-degree assault. Aguilera-Mederos was released May 18 on $400,000 bond.

He is expected back in court for a preliminary hearing on July 11.

Renovate Your Home for Your Own Enjoyment, Not to Help It Sell Better

Sellers ask whether they should renovate prior to putting their home on the market. The short answer is “no.” Unless you’re fixing an eyesore, you will be wasting your money.

So, what’s an “eyesore”? I use the term to define something that draws a buyer’s immediate attention in a negative way — a torn carpet, a damaged countertop, a broken window, a weathered and peeling front door, etc.

The closer an eyesore is to the home’s entrance, the more important it will be to fix. If the eyesore is in a far-flung bedroom or the basement, I’m less concerned, so long as the main part of the house is really attractive. By the time a buyer gets to that distant eyesore, they will either have fallen in love with the house or not. If they have fallen in love by then, the buyer’s response will be more forgiving — “Oh, that’s easy to fix.”

Eliminating eyesores is worth every penny. Other improvements, such as updating a bathroom or kitchen that’s not an eyesore, may return some or much of what you spend, but probably not all. On such improvements, consider the condition of the real estate market.

If there’s a shortage of homes like yours — say, a ranch-style home in a desirable neighborhood — then you could probably minimize even the eyesore fixes. If your home will have lots of competition, fixing those eyesores becomes far more important. This is a topic on which you benefit from speaking with a Realtor, given our ready access to such data.

tate are to sustainability, I hate to say it, but installing solar panels produces about the lowest return on investment when it comes to selling your home. You should only invest in solar if you intend to stay in your home for at least five years. You will get your return on investment from the reduced energy bills, not in a higher sale price for your home. In our case, we installed 10 kilowatts of solar at our home, but that was seven years ago, and we don’t plan to sell anytime soon.

If you make the same decision, please buy solar instead of leasing. Selling a home with a leased solar system is not as attractive to buyers.

As stated in the headline, make improvements that you want to live with and enjoy, and make them now, not when you’re about to sell. It matters little to us whether our wonderful new kitchen will return the $40,000 we spent on renovating it, since we will have enjoyed it ourselves for many years. And if you know you’re going to sell eventually, but not soon, spend the money now and enjoy the improvement!

Improved Instructions For Researching Listing Agents

A shortcut that I created, www.Find DenverRealtors.com, takes you to the page on Denver’s MLS for searching agents by name. Note: If you don’t find him/her right away, try entering only their last name, since they may use a nickname or have an initial you didn’t enter. Last names tend not to vary.

Click on the agent’s name to go to another web page where you can read his or her profile (assuming they created one) and see current and sold listings, unless they have none. Click on their listings to see how the agent described the home on the MLS. Did they list all the rooms, not just bedrooms

and bathrooms, providing dimensions, or just enter the mandatory fields? Keep in mind that the best indicator of how listing agents will serve you is how they have served previous sellers.

Looking at those listings will answer the most important questions which you’d ask in person, but you won’t have to take their word — the truth is right there in front of you. You’ll learn, for example, whether they did pointand-shoot pictures or had a professional photographer shoot magazine quality photos, and whether they created a real narrated video tour, as we do, or merely a slide show with music.

Reflections on Our 4,800-Mile Tesla Road Trip

A couple weeks ago, I wrote about my 50th reunion at MIT. What I didn’t say in that column was that Rita and I drove there in our Tesla Model X. After the reunion, we drove north to visit my sister Susan in Maine, then into Canada to explore Quebec City. Returning from there, we drove past Toronto the morning after their Stanley Cup victory, noticing many “We the North” banners.

Over a 16-day period, we drove 4,800 miles strictly on battery power, stopping at gas stations only to clean bugs off the windshield.

This was our second cross-country trip in the Model X. The first one was to Seattle a year ago. Four years ago we drove to Connecticut and back in a 2014 Tesla Model S. People ask whether it was hard finding charging stations. No, that’s never an issue in a Tesla, because when you put a destination in the navigation system, it identifies the Super-

charger locations along the route and directs you to them like any other destination and tells you how long to charge to reach the next one. These locations are usually adjacent to the highways you’d travel anyway, so it adds no distance to the trip, and the charging sessions are rarely over 50 minutes. Best of all, since we enjoy lifetime free supercharging, the electricity was free. The only cost of the trip was the wear on the tires, various tolls, food and lodging.

I used the Tesla’s self-driving feature constantly to maintain my desired speed and to stay in my chosen lane. Cruise control is automatic, slowing down based on the vehicle ahead of me and maintaining a safe separation. These features make driving far less tiring and far safer. The car would alert me if it didn’t sense my hand on the steering wheel for 30 seconds, which is a good safety feature.

Lakewood learns the future of its growth on July 2 Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative finally comes to a vote

ohn Henderson, who has lived in Lakewood for more than three years, points to the Alta Green Mountain apartment complex, set to open in August, when he talks about why he will vote for the hotly debated Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative, which would give residents a say in what gets developed.

He questions where people will park at the complex, at 13155 W. Mississippi Court, and how it will affect the surrounding neighborhood.

“Lakewood’s community has land where people want to live and work,” Henderson said. “You have that, and you have commercial and financial interest of folks who want to take advantage of those opportunities. Then you have folks who live here, pay taxes and enjoy recreation opportunities here who also have a stake in how the community grows and develops. Their voices have been silenced.”

But at Lakewood City Hall, most strongly disagree, saying the city cares about managing growth in a way that makes it affordable for people to live here. The initiative, they say, would turn Lakewood into another metro-area city, where the housing market has priced out most people.

“I think we’re addressing the issues people are concerned about, but it will take time before people can feel it,” said City Councilmember Jacob LaBure, noting that the city’s Development Dialogue committee exists to listen to residents’ views on growth, change and quality of life in the city.

“To me, people are categorizing this as developer vs. the neighborhood, but I don’t see it that way.”

On July 2, the city’s debate over growth will have an answer, as voters say yes or no to the citizen-driven Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative, also known as Question 200, that would limit new home construction to 1% per year and require Lakewood City Council to hold a public hearing and vote to approve projects with 40 units or more.

Voting ballots were sent out during the week of June 10 and must be returned by 7 p.m. on July 2. Voters can drop off ballots inside and outside of the Civic Center at 480 S. Allison Parkway.

Watching to see what happens In an environment where residents in other cities also are worried about too much growth, too fast, the outcome in Lakewood may have a ripple effect outside the city, at least one policy observer says.

In 2016, supporters of the Colorado Voting on Limiting Housing Growth Initiative, which aimed to limit housing growth through countywide initiatives and referendums, stated their intentions to get the initiative on the

Counties such as Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Douglas, El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld would have had a limited

private house growth of 1% in 2019 and 2020 if the measure were implemented, a limit similar to the one in the Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative. The ballot measure failed to qualify for last year’s general election ballot.

“You see this all the time in politics in Colorado — an idea gets tested out at the local level, and then there’s an effort to take it statewide,” Simon Lomax, a policy fellow for EIS Solutions, a public relations firm that works on government affairs, told a crowd at a Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation (Jeffco EDC) luncheon on June 19 at the Jefferson County Courthouse. “There is a statewide ballot measure sitting on the shelf, ready to go, depending on the outcome of what happens on July 2.”

‘This is Lakewood’s time’ Councilmember Mike Bieda, who said he is speaking as a resident and not a public official, believes it is important to keep in mind that the Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative was initiated by Lakewood residents.

During the summer of 2017, supporters of the initiative collected about 6,192 certified signatures — more than the required 5,165 — to go to City Council. The council then had the option of voting on the initiative, or sending it to residential vote.

“In the end, people are tired of seeing what’s happening in their city,” Bieda said. “They want to keep the neighborhoods the way they are, and that’s why I ran for city council. That’s what (the Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative) is about.”

Anderson Park on W. 44th Ave. in Wheat Ridge is scheduled to reopen beginning with a celebration hosted by Mayor Bud Starker on June 29 at 10:30 a.m. The plan to renovate and improve Anderson Park is the first project to be completed of the four Investing 4 the Future projects being funded by ballot initiative 2E, which was passed by voters in 2016, approving a ½ cent temporary sales tax increase.

By maintaining the characteristics of the park and updating and improving its amenities, Wheat Ridge Parks and Recreation will be able to meet the growing demands of the community.”

Other improvements include new playground features, and a complete renovation of the Anderson Building.

After struggling with depression, Arvada man tells his story Family speaks up to challenge mental health stigma for men

wenty-two years after he first started struggling with depression, Geoff Grandi’s symptoms hadn’t gone away.

They had only intensified, exacerbated by a number of factors — his job, his mother’s death, an earlier divorce and the stress of being a new dad.

But what bothered him most was the way these stressors made him irritable toward his family. And he found himself constantly worried about his relationship with his second wife, Whitney, and their newborn son, Woods.

“That’s such a fear to say, `I think my depression has pushed me into a violent tendency,’ ” the Arvada resident said. “I would just tell her to leave me. I needed to get away, and I thought everyone else would be better off.”

As he prepared for a friend’s bachelor weekend in Breckenridge last summer, he said he also prepared to take his life, bringing a loaded gun with him.

“But it was a fulfilling weekend. I felt loved,” he said. “I ended up not following through.”

When he returned home, Geoff, now 35, gave his gun to Whitney and visited the ER and was transferred to West Pines Behavioral Health, a psychiatric hospital at 3400 N. Lutheran Parkway in Wheat Ridge. It was the first time he’d sought professional help for his depression.

“As men, we need to be tough. We can’t let our families down, we can’t let our friends down,” he said about why he waited so long. “It’s because of society’s expectations.”

Now in an outpatient program with the hospital, Geoff — with Whitney — has been sharing his story as part of Let’s Talk Colorado, an annual mental health campaign by the Tri-County Health Department. The campaign seeks to raise awareness around mental health with a goal of lessening the stigma associated with it and has focused this year on men in particular, encouraging them to speak up about their struggles.

“Men don’t seek care at the same rate women do,” said John Douglas, executive director of Tri-County Health, “even though numbers show they suffer from depression, anxiety and other obstacles to their well-being the same as everyone else.”

Looking for solutions Those involved with the campaign have pointed to the significant difference between suicide rates for men and women. According to the Colorado Health Institute, in 2017 nearly 900 of Colorado’s 1,175 suicides were committed by men.

“We need to be talking about mental health in very much the same way we talk about physical health,” said Glenn Most, executive director at West Pines, a campaign partner. “If people in the public eye can talk about it, that certainly helps lift that stigma.”

Experts say that stigma stems from traditional gender roles and societal expectatiions, which lead many men to avoid talking about psychological or emotional struggles.

The Grandis suggested that new resources for men could contribute to the conversation, including more advertisements and coverage about the topic in the news or in podcasts, which, Geoff and Whitney said, have made a difference for them.

“We need these things showing what the symptoms look like,” Whitney said, “not just for dads and their families, but for all relationships.”

Phil Stockton agreed. As clinician and program manager at Khesed Wellness in Denver, which provides affordable mental healthcare services, Stockton sees far fewer male patients than female patients, he said.

This would especially benefit men older than 30 years old, who are the least likely to come to his practice, he said, though he has seen an increasing number of male patients younger than 30.

“There’s this new acceptance amongst that generation that I find really exciting,” he said. “But at the same time, I’m not seeing anything near that for people who are 30 and up.”

He also believes the stigma may change if more men take up careers in mental health. According to a 2016 report from the American Psychological Association, only 35% of psychologists are male.

“If a male client is reaching out and they’re wanting to see a male clinician, and then you factor in insurance, the choices get narrower,” Stockton said. “It’s important to look at how we can make the field appeal to men.”

Steps in the right direction While those seeking to support men acknowledge there’s plenty of work to do, they also feel the past few years have heralded in progress.

“It may seem small, but even the fact that Geoff is sharing his story and the media is willing to cover this topic is progress,” Most said. “I’m not sure

The Grandis continue working toward progress.

“It’s something we have to work on every day,” Whitney said. “There are still bad days, but there are also good days.”

Geoff agreed, saying the family makes constant improvement through regular communication, couple’s counseling and the embracing of life’s ups and downs.

County considers sale of New York Building in Lakewood Sale could save the county millions in capital funds

The county could save about $7 million in capital funding over the next few years should it go forward with selling the New York Building in Lakewood to its current tenants.

The building, which houses Intervention Community Corrections Services (ICCS) “is nearly 100 years old now,” said Deputy County Manager Kate Newman. Continuing to reinvest in the “old building is not cost effective.”

The sale would free up capital funds that were to be allocated to the building’s maintenance, Newman said.

The Board of Jefferson County Commissioners is scheduled to vote June 25 on whether to approve the sale for $350,000 to ICCS, after the Golden Transcript has gone to press. The story will be updated online at goldentranscript.net.

Should the board approve the purchase and sales agreement, Intervention Inc. will have a 60-day period for due diligence and inspection. An anticipated closing date is Aug. 30. The county would have the right of first refusal — meaning the county would have the option to buy it back — if Intervention Inc. decides to later sell the New York Building and its property.

If the sale is approved, the capital fund money that would have gone into maintaining the New York Building could go toward other capital projects, such as roads, Newman said.

Built in 1922, the New York Building, 1651 Kendall St., has been countyowned since 1993. In 2002, the county and Intervention Inc. entered into a lease agreement to manage work release and community corrections programs out of the building. But the county’s facilities management department oversees the building and pays for its maintenance.

Intervention Inc. has offered to purchase the building and its nearly 3 acres of property for $350,000.

Company representatives could not be reached for comment.

The building is structurally sound, but the inside needs an overhaul, Newman said. The plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems all need work.

County documents state about $4 million has been appropriated in 2019 for high priority repairs and renovation of the New York Building.

Another $3 million was requested over three years for smaller maintenance projects that are not safety related, such as the parking lot, Newman said.

To date in 2019, the county has spent $86,000 on the building’s maintenance, according to county documents. That money will not be reimbursed in the event of a sale.

Intervention Inc. pays $141,658 annually to rent the building, states county

documents say. According to Newman, that money is used by the county to offset the basic, ongoing upkeep of the building and its property, such as snowplowing.

The county wouldn’t lose that rental income, Newman said, because it spends even more annually on the building’s regular maintenance.

For cost effectiveness, the county originally had wanted to relocate the community corrections services and build a new, more efficient building to house it. Dating back nearly a decade, various companies and organizations — including the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, located across the street from the New York Building in what is known as the 40 West Arts District — had shown considerable interest in purchasing the property.

However, any sale was contingent on the county securing a replacement site or facility for the community corrections services.

In 2015, the county looked into a proposed location near West 8th Avenue and Quail Street in Lakewood. This location would have required a special use permit from the city of Lakewood, but moreover, the relocation of the community corrections services to the proposed location was met with much community opposition.

Intervention Inc. only recently approached the county about buying the New York Building, according to county documents.

‘Living history’ locomotive returns home after 12 years And just in time for Colorado Railroad Museum’s 60th anniversary

Rail fans from across the country are excited that an iconic Rio Grande Southern locomotive will soon be in operation again.

“It’s an important piece of railroad history, and to actually be able to operate it is really cool,” said Donald Tallman, executive director of the Colorado Railroad Museum. “It’s truly living history.”

Tallman is referring to the Rio Grande Southern Locomotive No. 20, which arrived home June 4 to the museum in Golden after undergoing restoration in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, for the past 12 years.

“It’s been a long time,” said Jeff Taylor, the museum’s curator of rolling stock and equipment. “There’s been a lot of hype about it coming home.”

Having Locomotive No. 20 is exciting enough on its own, Tallman said, but even more so because it arrived just in time for the Colorado Railroad Museum’s 60th anniversary celebration that runs July 12-14.

In the past six decades, the museum has “grown and flourished,” Tallman said. It attracts about 100,000 visitors

Through the years, it served the mining industry, Colorado tourists and even played a role in the 1949 film “A Ticket to Tomahawk.” It last ran in 1951, but thanks to recent restoration work done at the Strasburg Rail Road in Pennsylvania, the locomotive will be operational again sometime next year at its home at the Colorado Railroad Museum.

and navigate the winding and steep Phantom Canyon to and from Cripple Creek.

There were only five of its kind, Taylor said, and Locomotive No. 20 is the only one left — all the others have been scrapped for parts.

“The railroad was good at recycling,” Taylor said, adding that Locomotive No. 20 has parts that were original to the other four locomotives.

By the late 1930s, Locomotive No. 20 was serving tourists. But in 1949, it became a movie star and played the role of Emma Sweeny, a locomotive in the film “A Ticket to Tomahawk.”

The last time Locomotive No. 20 ran was in November 1951, and it was sold at auction to the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club in 1952. The Rocky Mountain Railroad Club transferred ownership of the train to the Colorado Railroad Museum in 2006, and that year, an anonymous donor gave a donation to get it back to operational condition. rebuilt by the Strasburg Rail Road.

Strasburg Rail Road specializes in the steam engine, Tallman said.

Locomotive No. 20 returned to Golden with about 80 percent of the work done, Taylor said. The Strasburg Rail Road did the major work needed to certify it for federal standards.

That means if the Colorado Railroad Museum chooses, it can take Locomotive No. 20 on tours to places outside of the museum once it’s operational, Taylor said.

Taylor and a team of about 15 will complete the rest of the work at the Colorado Railroad Museum. What is

left is mostly cosmetic and “fine detail work,” Taylor said.

He expects Locomotive No. 20 to be operational sometime in 2020, but museum visitors are able to view it now as it’s being worked on in the museum’s shop, Taylor said.

Tallman noted that unlike many other railroad museums’ exhibits, which include artifacts from all over the country, the Colorado Railroad Museum is especially “unique because everything is focused on Colorado.

“The entire collection either ran within or through Colorado,” Tallman said. “That’s really special.”

Concentrated innuendo brings about maximum effectiveness

ix words may not seem like a lot, but think of the evocations of “I love you. Or do I?” You have a story, complete with conflict.

Entries in the six-word story contest came from California, Illinois, Ohio, and Colorado. From a well-known, local radio voice. From an 80-year old, former high school English teacher, and from a 17-year-old aspiring writer.

I received entries from two notable Colorado artists, and one each from a husband and wife.

Many of the stories were straightforward, a few were oblique, some were witty.

Here are the best ones.

There was no explanation.

It reminded me of the cryptic title of a Jack Nicholson film. If you have ever wondered what “Five Easy Pieces”

means, it refers to the title on a piano recital program that appeared in a scene that was cut.

My high school English teacher, Sharene Schmalz (Cincinnati) sent, “Bunnies lost to the cat today.”

I replied, “After 80 glorious years of Chaucer, Dostoevsky, Craig Marshall Faulkner, and Shirley Smith MacLaine, you send a story about tiny field animals being confronted and consumed by a feral cat?”

Another example is rubber rabbitbrush, which is widespread in Colorado. You see it along roadsides, including Interstate 470, Route 85/ Santa Fe Drive and in the open plains.

The fact that it grows along highways and in open country indicates that it is one tough plant! Rabbitbrush is an excellent pollinator plant and the dwarf cultivar, Ericameria nauseosa ssp. nauseosa baby blue form, is an easy-to-grow, soft textured, manageable and tidy garden plant.

of them uses public funding for bad purpose. And, in a political sense, “teachers” has come to be shorthand for an intransigent self-interest group that puts their concerns above those of students and families. But, in 28 years of teaching and another 17 of studenting, I’ve never been a part of a company that is more intelligent, more giving, more encouraging and more selfless than teachers.

• Soccer Families. I know this is a weird one. But, when your child plays competitive soccer (or any sport, really), you end up spending an awful lot of time with the other people who are there supporting their children. This has the potential for disaster written all over it — just look at the ridiculous case of that brawl that started at a 7-year-old baseball game last week in Lakewood. But, for me, whether that’s

been at the YMCA or with the Edge, the company of soccer families has been a surprise joy to be a part of. Many of these people who were thrown together haphazardly because the kids enjoy chasing a ball around a big grassy area have become friends, and we have enjoyed an almost party-like atmosphere around the events that our kids’ games became.

It’s always worth the time to take inventory of certain parts of your life, and find reasons to be grateful. And, to the extent that the company you keep influences your days, it’s always important to take stock of those groups. So, maybe just as an exercise in clearing your mind a little bit this summer, consider the companies in your life, and realize the role they play in your happiness and success.

One of the most exciting parts of SeriesFest is attending the Block events (which focus on genres or mediums, like comedy, drama or digital) to see what new Clarke Reader and exciting voices are rising. That’s where you’ll come across gems like Par Parekh’s “The Happy,” a comedy about an Indian-American in Los Angeles who gets constantly mistaken as a New Age guru.

“By the end of this weekend, we will have screened over 270 independent series, held 4t special events with premieres from two dozen different networks, hosted by 52 panels,” said Kleiner. “We also created more connections, job opportunities and success stories than we can keep count of.”

Here are some of the best things I saw as part of the 2019 SeriesFest: Screening of STARZ’s new supernatural thriller, ‘The Rook’ We live in paranoid times, with very real fears about over-surveillance, privacy loss and bad faith governments flexing their muscles worldwide. Which, according to Stephen Garrett, executive producer of STARZ’s new series “The Rook,” is what makes a spy story such a good reflection for our times.

Based on the book by Daniel O’Malley, the show follows Myfanwy Thomas (Emma Greenwell,) an employee at Checquy, Britain’s last truly secret service for people with paranormal abilities. When she wakes up in the rain beside London’s Millennium Bridge with no memory of who she is, she has to follow a trail of clues and figure out who wiped her memory. Olivia Munn and Joely Richardson also star as agents that might be Myfanwy’s best hope or enemy in disguise.

‘He meant so much to this community’ Denver Broncos honor late owner Pat Bowlen

n Jan. 25, 1998, Littleton residents Sandy and David Alexander were sitting at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego as they witnessed the Denver Broncos win the franchise’s first Super Bowl. Following the game, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen handed over the Lombardi Trophy, awarded to Super Bowl winners, to quarterback John Elway, saying “This one is for John.”

Following the Broncos’ Super Bowl victory in 2016, Elway, now general manager and president of football operations for the team, held the Lombardi Trophy and said, “This one is for Pat.” Bowlen, who had been fighting Alzheimer’s disease, died on June 13 at the age of 75. On June 18, there was a free, open-house tribute at Broncos Stadium at Mile High.

More than 5,000 people came to the tribute to honor the life of Bowlen.

The team had artifacts on display, including Bowlen’s fur coat, the team’s Lombardi trophies, game balls and more.

“He gave us a winning team that we didn’t have before. He put together some of the best teams we’ve ever had,” said David Alexander, who has had season tickets for Broncos games for 45 years with Sandy.

Outside of football, Bowlen made significant contributions to the Denver Boys & Girls Club and donated more than $35 million to charitable organizations in Denver since 1993.

“He was a real gentleman to everyone,” Sandy Alexander said. “We’ve been around the Broncos for years and he was just an upstanding man, and it was hard to see what happened to him.”

Bowlen will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 3 along with former Denver Broncos player Champ Bailey.

“It feels like someone I had met died,” Denver resident Hugo Ramirez said. “He meant so much to this community and to this city.”

‘There’s so much good in the world’ Neighbors, friends support Arvada family, raise thousands of dollars, after husband’s aneurysm

When Paul Marinello saw an ambulance outside the Smiths’ house on April 18, he assumed the ambulance had come for 2-year-old Austin. Austin had been born with an interstitial lung disease, the diagnosis occurring just years after his mother, former Alameda International High School teacher Crystal Smith, was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease.

“I thought, `It’s got to be their son,’ ” Marinello said. “But then I saw the full-size gurney.”

Marinello would soon learn the ambulance had been called for Crystal’s husband, Sean, after he suffered a brain aneurysm. Sean had a seizure while getting ready for work that morning; a second seizure left him unresponsive shortly after Crystal called paramedics.

The 38-year-old was admitted to Swedish Medical Center’s neurological intensive care unit and has since been transferred to a number of hospitals and undergone 14 surgeries.

“They told me he had about a 5% chance of living,” Crystal said, “and I put my faith in God. I knew that Sean would fight to come back to his family.”

Healing through ‘the strength of others’ The day after Sean’s hospitalization, neighbor Julie Porter was standing on her back patio with her husband, Matt, talking on the phone with Marinello’s wife, Nina.

“At the same time, Nina and Matt said, `What if we start a GoFundMe page?’ ” Julie said. “So we went over and put it together that night.”

The campaign started by the two couples has since spread to hundreds within the community, receiving 516 Facebook shares and raising $23,635 to date.

“There have been people donating $500 or $1,000,” Nina said. “This support can help Crystal focus more on Sean’s care and on the family.”

The four set the fundraiser’s goal at $250,000 to help the Smiths cover Sean’s medical bills and pay for a home. The family had been preparing to move to a new house when Sean was first hospitalized and will now move in with family members for financial reasons.

“We just wanted to help them get through this huge bump and execute the plan they’d had in place,” Paul said.

Just after the campaign was posted, neighbors also raised more than $2,000 for the Smiths through the family’s garage sale. Friends and family members finished the packing job the Smiths hadn’t yet completed and held the sale, with many selling their own belongings and donating the proceeds to the Smiths.

“I feel like there’s something unique about this neighborhood,” Julie said.

“There’s such a sense of bond and community with helping one another.”

While neighbors led the charge, word of the fundraising efforts also spread outside of the neighborhood.

Many of those close to Sean, a system administrator at blood and cellular tech company Terumo BCT, spread the word to their workplaces and shared the GoFundMe page on social networking sites.

Individuals have donated an average of $114 per person to the campaign, with 207 donating so far.

“That’s a lot of people who said, `I want to try to make a difference,’ ” Paul said.

A ‘humbling’ feeling Sean is now recovering in the hospital and participating in a rehabilitation program. The family hopes he will return home in early July, Crystal said, after which he will begin an outpatient rehab program.

For Sean — who underwent his most recent brain surgery on June 3 — the efforts of friends, family and strangers have “been very humbling.”

“I was actually quite surprised that this was happening,” he said from his hospital room. “It’s awesome to have the positivity come through and see people coming together to help others.”

The support, Crystal said, has provided far more than money.

“What helped get us through was the kindness from others,” she

said. “We’ve been opening up to the strength of others who reached out to help us.”

That strength made a list that Crystal recited every day as, each time she drove home from the hospital, she named everything and everyone she was grateful for.

“There’re so many names on the GoFundMe of people I don’t even know.

I don’t even know how to reach out to them or tell them thank you,” she said. “They’re showing that there’s so much good in the world.”

Rocks are cheap yet priceless for kids

W

hat are 10 things a family can do with rocks after children no longer put things in their mouth?

Top of the list children love to throw and skip stones in the water.

Help them look for thin flat rocks and show them how to flick their wrists to have rocks hit the water on the flat side. Kids and adults can pick a target to hit like another big rock or a spot a reasonable distance LIFELONG away so everyone LEARNING can participate.

Esther Macalady Children like to make messages shapes like hearts, circles, squares and triangles with rocks. They also like to draw with rocks and soon find rocks that are soft like sandstone and hard like granite. Point out that it is important not to deface public places.

Making Cairns Making rock piles that balance called cairns teach engineering.

Scouts and many cultures use certain rock piles for warnings and trail markings. The Inuit and others make them to symbolize protection, memorials, holy messages, and directions. How high can the cairn get? How can the rocks be piled large to small, small to large, or mixed up? Can they make a little bridge or window? Cairns can decorate gardens and shorelines. They can say “I was here.” Will they be here when I return? Children can paint cairns and adults can varnish them to stay shiny in gardens.

What lives under rocks? Land or water, there are surprises underneath, lessons about nature and

reasons we should not be afraid, only curious.

Comfort Rocks Children can decorate pet rocks with wiggly eyes. They can make rock families and animals by painting and gluing rocks together.

Sometimes rocks are just for looking at, touching, putting under your pillow, keeping in your pocket or surprising Mom when she does the wash. Children have treasures and they like to talk about them. They also like to make rock collections of beauties to keep. They can keep cheap souvenirs of places the family visits.

Rocks are fun to photograph whether the kids have climbed a rock for a better view or used them to step across a stream on hot day with a little helping hand. If they catch the sun just right in clear water rocks look beautiful and shiny. Coat with Modge Podge or spray with clear acrylic to retain the shine.

There are many library books and sites about rock basics to learn about the three types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

Museums have rock collections and books to identify local rocks.

Young children may be most interested in color, shine, and the texture of rocks. Collections could be organized by those categories and reorganized as they grow older.

Columbine graduate works to help rename highway for slain teacher STAFF REPORT

A member of the Columbine High School class of 2000 plans to donate money from the sale of his artwork to help rename part of C-470 in honor of Dave Sanders, the teacher who was killed at the school in 1999.

Shortly after events commemorating the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, a resolution was passed by the Colorado House of Representatives and approved by Gov. Jared Polis to rename a seven-mile stretch of the highway in honor of Sanders.

The cost of renaming the highway, such as new signs, must come from donations.

Jared Gates was a junior at Columbine when the massacre happened. He said he always appreciated what he learned in high school, especially in Patti Nielsen’s jewelry-making class. Now some 20 years later, he uses those skills to craft sculptures and designs from metal.

In addition to creating columbine metal flowers for the memorial reunion, Gates has created Rebel Roses, in honor of Columbine’s mascot, and he will donate money from the sale of the roses.

Following the premiere of the first episode on June 21, Garrett was joined by executive producers and show runners Karyn Usher and Lisa Zwerling as well as Greenwell, Munn and Richardson to talk about the process of getting the show made, filming in London and grounding a super-human show in reality.

While there’s a significant supernatural aspect to the show, keeping it grounded in science and physics was important for the showrunners, as was developing real relationships.

“We looked for abilities inspired by science instead the way the powers are approached in the book,” Zwerling said.

“So many shows are addressing political paranoia in different ways, but what sets ours apart is the way we develop these real relationships between human beings,” Usher added.

Shondaland 2.0 Panel There’s almost no way to be a fan of television in 2019 and not have reckoned with the enormous talent and influence of Shonda Rhimes’ work.

She has created genuine cultural moments in shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With a Murder.” Through her production company, Shondaland, Rhimes has used all her clout to offer storytelling opportunities to more diverse voices.

Alison Eakle, Anna Deavere Smith, Katie Lowes and Akua Murphy gathered for the Shondaland 2.0 Panel on June 23, moderated by Buzzfeed’s Ashley Ford, to discuss the power of women storytellers and how the production company is highlighting these stories.

One of the best things about Shondaland, the panelists explained, is the company’s willingness to fully develop not only projects but creatives and staff. Everyone had stage had started with Rhimes in one facet and grown into others as time progressed.

“That’s really baked into the process

for us,” said Eakle, head of fiction and non-fiction at Shondaland. “We especially believe it’s worth spending the time now to get our interns thoughts on the books, movies and shows they’re watching.”

Deavere Smith, who has been working in the entertainment world and as an activist for years, is currently adapting Isabel Wilkerson’s book, The Warmth of Other Suns,” and spoke about the power of story to unite in a divided time.

“There are so many stories to be told, and so many people who want to tell them,” she said. “Right now, we’re walking on a mountain with this woman in a moment in history – anything can happen.”

Power, Influence, and Hip-Hop: The Remarkable Rise of So So Def Screening “If you look in the history books, you don’t see enough me.”

If that sounds like a line from a rap song, you’re not too far off. The line came at a panel with Jermaine Dupri on June 23, following the premiere of “Power, Influence, and Hip-Hop: The Remarkable Rise of So So Def,” a documentary about the rise of Dupri’s record label.

Dupri’s not wrong in his aforementioned assertion, especially given the fact he was really responsible for bringing the Atlanta sound to the culture, when hip-hop was dominated by New York and Los Angeles. He’s responsible for hits like Kris Kross’ “Jump,” and Mariah Carey’s “The Emancipation of Mimi” and Usher’s “Confessions” albums.

The music and industry has changed in innumerable ways since Durpi first hit the scene, but he’s stayed in the game for 25 years. Along with Jay-Z and Missy Elliot, he’s been inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

And after all that, he’s still in search of his masterpiece.

“We just keep moving forward, and I keep thinking about what my system wants and what my system needs,” Dupri said. “Quincy Jones produced ‘Thriller” when he was 50 years old, so I’ve got five years.”
