15-year-old Arvada race car driver raises money for cancer patients

WWII veteran and Lakewood resident who just turned 100 About me I came out here from New York City in 1996. I was living in an apartment along Depew Street when I first moved here. I remember three men knocking on my door, claiming they were my neighbors. They entered my apartment with guns with intentions to rob me. They went into separate rooms, and I took off. I ran out of my apartment saying there was a fire, and the men left.

After that incident, I decided to move to Eaton Senior Communities in Lakewood.

Life before Lakewood I was drafted into the Army during World War II, but I was never deployed out of the States. I worked in a rehab center where military members would stay at. One night, I got called in the middle of the night, because a military member was going to jump off the ledge at a hotel. I talked him out of it and told him we have things to do tomorrow. I’ll never forget that.

In New York City, I sold life insurance for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 30 years. After I retired,

Arvada High School student supports foundation and Aurora family

When 15-year-old Cassidy Hinds tells her friends she’s a competitive race car driver, at first they don’t believe her.

“I kind of have to prove it to them,” she said.

So she invites friends to races and brings her race cars to school.

The Arvada High School junior, who competes at the I-76 Speedway and El Paso County Raceway, got started with the sport when she was 3 years old, racing RC cars with her father, a former competitive racer.

This year — her fifth racing season — she’s also launching a philanthropic effort: a fundraiser for nonprofit Friends of Jaclyn, which serves children diagnosed with brain tumors and other forms of cancer.

The organization recently teamed with Race Face Brand Development, the marketing agency Hinds partners with, to pair each of its racers with a family served by the nonprofit.

Hinds held an initial fundraising event June 10 at Texas Roadhouse, 5515 Vance St., parking cars in the restaurant lot, taking photos and signing autographs for those who donated to the cause. Diners could also ask to donate 10% of their bill to the foundation.

Hinds feels strongly connected to the nonprofit and the children it serves.

“I’ve been in a position that was life-threatening,” said Hinds, who was born almost four months premature. “So I relate to them.”

She feels a particularly strong connection, she said, with the family she has been paired with — Karen

Smith and her daughters, A’leyah, 2, and Londyn, 6, who was diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor at two days old.

“They said she wouldn’t walk and talk,” Smith said of her daughter, “but now she’s the sassiest thing.”

Since meeting the Hindses in April, Smith and her daughters have driven almost every week from their Aurora home to watch Hinds race.

“It’s nice for the girls to get out and do things that aren’t related to anything medical,” Smith said.

The two families spend time together on and off the race track, with Hinds often showing the two girls what’s behind the scenes of competitive racing.

“They get to see everything other people won’t see,” she said.

Through the first fundraiser, Hinds raised $370 for the foundation, interacting with passersby and those who had come to the restaurant specifically for the event, as was the case with neighbor Pat Horkan.

“I do charity events and, when I saw her supporting this, I had to come,” he said.

Hinds said she plans to keep racing as long as she can, setting her sights on NASCAR, and on getting her driver’s license in the coming year.

“I think driving a race car is easier than just driving,” she said with a laugh.

Residents at the Village at Belmar presented more than $3,000 in check donations to three groups on June 12.

The groups who received donations include West Metro Fire, The Action Center and Alpine Rescue. Residents realized their daily shopping at King Soopers could earn money for charities. They then voted on which organizations would receive their donations.

Lakewood baker Jack Phillips being sued again Autumn Scardina files a complaint in Denver District Court

Arvada attorney Autumn Scardina is not ready to walk away from her case against Jack Phillips, the embattled owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood.

Scardina’s attorneys formally filed a complaint in Denver District Court

against Phillips on June 5 over an incident that stems from June 2017 when she asked Masterpiece Cakeshop to make a cake that was pink on the inside and blue on the outside to celebrate her transition from male to female. Phillips denied her request, citing his religious beliefs, and Scardina filed a complaint through the Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

In March, the commission agreed to drop the case against Phillips and, in exchange, he agreed to drop a complaint against the state regarding discrimination against his faith. Despite the commission’s decision to drop the case, Scardina still had the right to

pursue a claim on her own.

Phillips is most known for the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in his favor for refusing to bake a cake for a Colorado gay couple in 2012, also because of his religious beliefs. The court’s decision last June did not address the issue of discrimination but concluded the Colorado Civil Rights Commission had been biased against Phillips’ religious beliefs.

“What has never been resolved is the core claim that his religion excludes him from Colorado law. We think that is an issue that needs to be resolved,” said John McHugh, an attorney representing Scardina, in a statement to

Colorado Community Media. “We have nothing but the upmost respect for religions, but we live in a nation of laws.”

Scardina’s lawsuit states Phillips discriminated against Scardina and used unfair trade practices.

Alliance Defending Freedom, a nonprofit Christian legal organization representing Phillips, called the lawsuit an attempt “to largely rehash old claims.”

“The state of Colorado abandoned similar ones just a few months ago,” senior counsel Jim Campbell said in a statement. “So this latest attack by Scardina looks like yet another desperate attempt to harass (Phillips).”

Conserving Water Is Likely to Become More Important in Coming Years My understanding as a layman is that although one of the impacts of warmer oceans due to climate change will be increased precipitation over land, it won’t be as predictable and consistent, so we need to include water conservation in any discussion of sustainability.

Or let’s think of it as water management, since we’ll also need to contemplate flooding as much as prolonged droughts.

At the level of water district, we need to be smart about conserving water. It’s a practice we need to implement in times of abundance, because we can’t be sure when the pendulum will swing the other way and we’ll endure periods of water shortage.

For homeowners, the biggest consumption of water can be the irrigation of our lawns and landscaping. Even though Rita and I replaced our Kentucky Bluegrass lawn with Bella Bluegrass, which requires less mowing and watering, we still need to use our sprinklers, although not as much. We would have done better to install buffalo grass, which is not as green, and requires zero irrigation or mowing. (I can provide the address of a home I know in Golden that installed buffalo grass a couple decades ago.)

There are sprinkler systems which adjust the amount of watering that is done based on rainfall and ground moisture, but I haven’t investigated those

devices, since I am usually home and adjusting the watering according to need. For example, this spring I didn’t dewinterize our sprinkler system until June 1st because of our unusually wet May. There are other residential strategies for saving water. I’m fond of taking showers in which I only run the water to get wet and to rinse off, but not running the water while washing.

We also installed 1.2gallon-per-flush toilets, which perform as well as the 1.6 gpf models. We have a sensor faucet on our kitchen sink which operates like those sensors you’re probably used to seeing in public restrooms. The faucet (by Moen) does allow you to turn the water on manually when appropriate.

We also installed a recirculation line on our water heater, which saves a lot of water by producing hot water more quickly in the kitchen and bathrooms.

Think of all the water you run waiting for it to get hot. Not only are you wasting that water, but you paid to heat that water, only to have it cool off sitting in the pipes between your water heater and your sink. You’ll also save energy by installing such a recirc line. Ask your plumber.

We’re glad our front-loading high efficiency washing machine died and had to be replaced!

At the governmental level, I’m surprised that CDOT and other jurisdictions don’t install buffalo grass in the medians and on the shoulders of our highways.

They would not only conserve water but save a lot of money on mowing, which can also endanger workers on highspeed highways.

Recently I saw a report on the blue jean industry, which uses an immense amount of water not just to grow the cotton (1,800 gallons per pair of jeans) but even more water to dye them blue!

Family Tree asks the community to count its comforts Nonprofit seeks donations through its #CountYourComforts challenge

Rich Karlis had just wrapped up his second season as a kicker for the Denver Broncos, and he was trying to figure out what to do with his free time. When he learned about Family Tree — a nonprofit headquartered in Jefferson County that works with people affected by child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness — he had his answer.

“I was fortunate enough to meet some really special people at Family Tree and quickly discovered where I can use the visibility of the Denver Broncos to raise awareness around domestic violence and child abuse,” said Karlis, who played for the Broncos for seven years until after the 1988 season.

During his 1984 season, Karlis’s field goals meant more than just points for his team: For every successsful field goal, he made a donation to Family Tree.

Now, Karlis and Family Tree are asking the community to support the nonprofit through the #CountYour-

Comforts challenge.

Family Tree is challenging the community to recognize comforts through the hashtag, make a small donation and challenge five others to do the same. Comforts can be little things from being able to turn on a light to having a vehicle to drive — things that some of Family Tree’s clients can’t do.

The #CountYourComforts campaign is meant to show that those impacted by child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness don’t have comforts that are basic needs.

you’re helping start a conversation about the need for Family Tree’s services, which is imperative to our work,” said Scott Shields, Family Tree’s chief executive officer. “We know our community cares about the issues we address, and by asking people to acknowledge their comforts, we will create a new campaign regarding the urgency to confront these challenges.”

“I didn’t know what we were going to do, but I knew failure wasn’t an option,” Adams said. “The House of Hope was a lifesaver for the girls and I.”

With 5A money, district accelerates digital learning plan District seeks to meet state-recommended tech guidelines

From conducting virtual dissections to putting together podcasts, students at Arvada West High School find themselves on their devices “in every single subject for every grade,” said librarian Lindsay Garlow.

While students are online, technology coordinator Leah Lindblom monitors how many more devices the school’s network can support.

And, thanks to the school’s most recent bandwidth update in February, students have seamlessly used their devices during class.

“We aren’t even filling our pipeline more than 50%, on average,” she said.

“At most, we’re at 90%, and nobody feels that hit.”

For Arvada West and all Jefferson County schools, this is only the beginning.

The school district will launch its latest digital project this summer, accelerating long-discussed plans with the passage of measure 5A to complete digital improvement efforts by 2023. The approval of 5A awarded the district a $33 million mill levy override for teacher compensation and

The State Educational Technology Directors Association recommends schools support .25 Mbps per student, and the district aims to support 1 Mbps per student by the end of the project.

Included in the plan are a number of measures to promote digital learning in schools, such as increasing bandwidth for all schools, said Brett Miller, the district’s chief information officer.

Bandwidth measures the rate at which data, expressed in bits or megabits, transfers across a network. The capacity is often measured in megabits per second (Mbps).

While some activities require a higher bandwidth capacity than others, the Federal Communications Commission recommends that consumers purchase a 1 Mbps capacity for adequate performance during internet browsing and emailing. For districts with 10,000 students or more, the State Educational Technology Directors Association only recommends .2 Mbps per student for online learning.

As part of the district’s plan to get to reach these benchmarks, the district has switched internet providers.

“We needed more bandwidth than we could afford on the current model,” Miller said. “This is one piece that will help improve student achievement.”

among comparable districts for bandwidth per student, weighing in at an average of .13 megabits per second (Mbps) per student. Westminster Public Schools ranks first at .22 Mbps.

Arvada West, which Miller says sees a large volume of internet use because of the number of students and amount of online learning in classrooms, supports a bandwidth of .232 Mbps per student.

While this bandwidth allows school technology to run smoothly, the district plans to implement further changes in case of growth or new technologies. Coming changes will raise capacity to roughly 1 Mbps, Miller said.

“The internet will likely be faster than home use,” he said.

Additionally, Jeffco Schools is working with local internet providers to provide reduced-cost home internet to qualifying families in the district, he said.

“The goal is equal access,” he said.

“No one will be left out of this.”

With the bond money, the district also will distribute school-issued laptops and tablets — known as 1:1 devices — to all fifth- and ninth-graders in the district. The rollout will occur in phases through the 2022-2023 school year, with phase one beginning in August 2019.

Those devices, which some Arvada West students have used since 2016, afford the students “the connection they need to make the contribution they want to make,” Lindblom said.

In an effort to promote digital learning in all grades throughout Jeffco Public Schools, the district is fast-tracking plans to improve technological tools and capacity in schools.

Sudents are preparing to take on the following tech projects in the coming school year: • Arvada’s Ralston Valley High School students will develop broadcasting skills, such as studio lighting, audio and graphic design skills, in a broadcasting technology class.

• Sixth through eighth graders at Dunstan Middle School in Lakewood will program robots through computer app LEGO Mindstorms.

• Students at D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High in Lakewood will use National Geographic’s MapMaker Interactive to create regional maps for research projects.

• Freshman and sophomores at Littleton’s Chatfield High School will learn graphic design techniques as part of the school’s STEM pathway.

• Students in all grades at Arvada West High School will learn to use programming languages like JavaScript and C++ in a computer programming class.

Robbie’s Hope grants $20,000 to Second Wind Fund STAFF REPORT

A $20,000 grant from Robbie’s Hope Foundation will help Second Wind Fund provide mental health services and suicide prevention resources for at-risk teens and youth.

Denver-based Second Wind Fund was chosen as the recipient of the foundation’s first grant because of its focus on local youth under the age of 19 and its emphasis on treatment and suicide prevention, Kari Eckert, executive director of Robbie’s Hope Foundation, said in a news release.

“Teens don’t always know how or where to go to ask for help,” Eckert said in the release. “This is why the work being done by Second Wind Fund is so important. Having access to mental health resources is critical.

-Through the services they offer, Second Wind is providing a literal lifeline to those who have lost hope.”

Second Wind Fund provides up to 12 sessions of therapy from a specialized network of providers.

“This grant will allow Second Wind Fund to continue its vital work of providing treatment services to our youth in our community who are at risk of suicide,” Maureen Johnson, executive director for Second Wind Fund, said in the release. “This generous donation from Robbie’s Hope will have a direct impact on the number of young people we are able to reach.”

Robbie’s Hope Foundation is dedicated to saving lives by cutting teen suicide rates in half by 2028, Eckert said in the release.

“We hope to accomplish this aggressive vision by helping to destigmatize depression and anxiety, while we

“We seek to do this through teen-developed, teen-led structured programming, legislative reform and the support of local resources that specialize in teen therapy, such as the services provided by the Second Wind Fund.”

Robbie’s Hope was formed in early 2019 after 15-year-old Robbie Eckert, a sophomore at Lakewood High School, took his own life on Oct. 11, 2018. The Wheat Ridge-based foundation works to remove the stigma surrounding teen depression, teen anxiety and teen suicide.

For Londyn, who is now recovering at home after being hospitalized June 11 from a stroke, what has meant the most has been the relationship Hinds has built with her and A’leyah, Smith said.

Vietnam memorial exhibit will heal wounds of war Traveling replica to stop in Arvada as only Colorado location

The public is invited to welcome the wall as police and motorcyclists escort the exhibit into the city. The escort will arrive at Ward Rod and 63rd Avenue at roughly 2:30 p.m. on June 18.

Volunteers will set up the wall on June 19 and the exhibit will officially open on June 20.

As a veteran of the Vietnam War, Jim Topkoff has met many who, after serving in the war, “don’t want anything to do with it.”

“There are thousands who just felt so neglected and unappreciated when they came back,” said Topkoff, who served in the Navy from 1962 to 1966.

That’s why, for him, the Wall that Heals is so important: “It’s an opportunity to be a part of the wall and start to heal those wounds.”

The Wall that Heals — a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. — will come to Arvada’s Faith Bible Chapel from June 20-23.

Seven-and-a-half feet tall, 375 feet wide and inscribed with the names of more than 58,000 service members who died in the war, the exhibit is free to the public and open 24 hours a day.

“The region is incredibly military-friendly,” said Tim Tetz, outreach director with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, “and the folks with the VVA chapter and the church really put together an incredible committee.”

Volunteers running the exhibit have gone above and

beyond to prepare, he said, with some, including chapter board member Topkoff, visiting the wall when it was up in other states.

“They have gone out of their way to make sure they do this right,” Tetz said.

“It’s just absolutely breathtaking,” Topkoff said, adding the wall looks particularly beautiful at night when illuminated by LED lights.

Additionally, visitors can view objects that individuals

have left behind at the wall in D.C. while the exhibit is in town.

“Anyone is more than welcome to participate,” Topkoff said. “It’s a time to reflect and remember those fallen soldiers.”

Tetz echoed that sentiment, encouraging anyone — veterans, family members, those who have seen the D.C. wall and those who haven’t — to visit.

“This wall is special because of how closely it resembles the wall in D.C., and because it’s in your community,” he said.

“You will be blown away by how beautiful it is.”

Lakewood Heritage Center’s permanent gallery highlights significant events throughout the 20th century, including the evolution from farmland to commerical growth.

was standing at the crossroads a few years ago. Along came a fellow with a guitar.

Said his name was Robert Johnson and that he had something to sell, but not to me.

I told him, “Me too.”

He gave me a smile and then he played a tune. I found out later it was a song called “Dust My Broom,” which makes no sense grammatically, but it sure sounded good.

After he was through playing, he said, “What are you asking for in exchange?”

I told him I had a strange request.

I said I wanted resistance.

“Resistance to what?”

“Excessive social media usage.”

He said, “Man, what are you talking about?’

I told him I wanted mental health.

He said, “You know what that means, don’t you? You’ll have to give up your phone.”

I told him, “I can do it.”

New research shows that “phones raise student anxiety,” according to Craig Marshall an Associated Press Smith article written by Carolyn Thompson.

She cites a National Education Association newsletter that labeled the anxiety a “mental health tsunami.”

She said, “Research now points to smartphone-driven social media as

one of the biggest drivers of (student) stress.”

She referred to a South Carolina high school teacher’s classroom experiment that had each student document every smartphone notification they received for one hour.

“One girl got close to 150 Snapchat notifications,” the teacher reported.

Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State, said, “What a lot of teens told me is that social media and their phones feel mandatory.”

An editorial in the American Academy of Pediatrics’ journal stated, “Aberrant and/or excessive social media usage” could contribute to teenage “feelings of isolation, depressive symptoms, and anxiety.”

I have not seen a teenager in public in the past 20 years who wasn’t on

the phone, holding a phone, kissing a phone or dancing with a phone.

A school in Maine, Belfast Area High, tried an experiment of its own that failed miserably.

No cellphones for a single day.

Why I’m voting no on Ballot Question 200

or several years now, growth has been the number one issue I’ve heard about as I knock on doors across Lakewood. People are worried about population growth and what it means for our historically underfunded schools and transportation infrastructure. We have all seen the traffic congesGUEST tion on highways like 6th Avenue and COLUMN C-470 and thoroughfares like Wadsworth, Kipling, Union, Colfax and Alameda, and we don’t want it to get worse.

Lakewood has a long tradition of developing plans in a collaborative way, Rep. Chris Kennedy moving slowly and taking community feedback every step of the way. That’s how we ended up with our Comprehensive Plan, Sustainability Plan and our Bicycle System Master Plan. And that’s what’s driving our current Development Dialogue, which has already led to many changes in how the city deals with development.

This week, Lakewood voters will receive mail ballots asking them whether to support Ballot Question 200. I’m voting no, and I hope you do, too. Though I share many of the proponents’ concerns about growth in our city, I feel that passing Question 200 won’t stop

of the school day at nearby Ralston Valley High School? That intersection is already massively overtaxed, and a railway bridge makes it all but impossible to widen Indiana enough to accommodate all the new traffic from Candelas. And, as of March 2018, the city had been denied federal funding to widen the road and replace the bridge.

I’ve written before that major projects require major consideration—that infrastructure must be put in place before huge changes can be properly enacted.

When I wrote that, it was in the context of a middle school, re-engineered to accommodate 1,000 students, in front of a road built to accommodate about 40 cars per hour. This proposed project would be a nightmare. When Candelas, Five Parks and Whisper Creek went up, there was

However, I am smartphone free.

If there is a teenager within the sound of this column who does not let a smartphone control your life, I’d like to hear about it. Just don’t call me.

How do you do it, when all of those around you are transfixed and

growth – it will just increase sprawl and make Lakewood’s housing affordability and traffic problems worse.

We already have a shortage of affordable housing that can only be solved by true strategic planning. If passed, Question 200 will make it much more difficult to build new affordable housing and will drive up rents and property taxes for people who already live here.

For the teachers, police officers, firefighters, young professionals and others who work in Lakewood but can’t afford to live here, Question 200 will mean they have to drive in from somewhere else.

That means more cars driving in and out of Lakewood every day, and thus more congestion on our roads.

So if not in Lakewood, then where?

I’ve had constituents suggest that growth can just happen east of Aurora, but that’s just not realistic. If people are working in Lakewood, they’re not going to want an hour commute every day. That means increasing demand for developments in unincorporated Jefferson County that would sprawl out across the undeveloped spaces that contribute to our views of the foothills.

That’s really the choice we face. If we pass Question 200, we make Lakewood less affordable and increase sprawl and congestion. If we defeat it, we can resume our thoughtful, collaborative and strategic planning process for the future.

I believe that we all want Lakewood to be a community accessible to young room along Indiana to widen the street to handle the traffic and, still, it takes forever to get through that area. Indiana between the railroad bridge and the current project at 72nd is restricted on the sides by water and by drop-offs—the ability to widen the road is limited.

And my faith in CDOT’s ability to get the necessary construction done in a timely fashion is … also limited.

I’m a fan of progress; I’m a fan of growth. I’m not one of those people who want Arvada to forever look like it did in 1984. But recent experiences have taught me that the price of growth is frequently much greater than they tell you it will be, and the payoff is rarely worth the price.

families, seniors and everyone in between. I believe we all want to protect our beautiful parks, open spaces and views. I believe we all want safe neighborhoods and great public schools. I believe we all enjoy having a growing number of unique restaurants, breweries, stores and other amenities right here in our own city.

And how about the revitalization that has begun on West Colfax? I have loved seeing the emergence of art galleries and the facelift on the old JCRS shopping center, but we’re still seeing too many vacant units that could be filled by a new restaurant or store. And many of northeast Lakewood’s residents have to drive a couple miles to reach the nearest grocery store, which can be a real problem if you don’t have a car.

Why is that? It’s because businesses won’t move into areas that don’t have enough residents. New multi-family housing in northeast Lakewood – one

of the growth areas designated in the Comprehensive Plan – could make a big difference in continuing the West Colfax renaissance.

What if we had a new restaurant row on Colfax instead of the growing number of storage units? Or retail establishments other than dollar stores?

What if we could be sure that our kids will be able to afford to raise their families here? And that our parents will be able to retire here?

If we want to be thoughtful and strategic about growth, we must push our city council to continue the Development Dialogue, taking community feedback as they plan the right ways to grow. Passing Question 200 will not make growth more strategic – it will only increase sprawl and congestion while making Lakewood a less affordable place to live. Please join me in voting no.

Jason Linus Modlich 4/4/1985 - 6/8/2019

It is with immense sadness that we announce the unexpected death of Jason Linus Modlich, 34 years old, from pneumonia and sepsis on June 8, 2019 at UC Health Hospital.

Jason was born in Englewood, Colorado, on April 4, 1985 and was the beloved son of Char and Steve Modlich, who owned JUS COOKINS Restaurant in Aurora and then in Lakewood, Colorado for many years.

He was singing from the time he was a small child. He was a member of the Colorado Children’s Chorale, and then began acting and singing the lead roles in musicals, such as Crazy for You, at Conifer High School.

He continued musical studies with scholarships to Western State, the University of Northern Colorado and Metro State University of Denver.

In addition, he graduated from the Colorado School of Broadcasting and

had a wonderful voice for radio commercials. He had recently performed at the Adams Mystery Playhouse in Denver.

He is survived by his parents, Nonna Gloria Patrona, Uncles Jack Patrona, Tom Modlich and Scott Aurand, Aunts Kathy Patrona, Judy Modlich, Charlene Rooker, Terri Modlich, Glorietta Patrona, and Rosanna Patrona-Aurand, Cousins Gian Aurand, Luc Aurand, Jesse Modlich, Kelsie Modlich, Claire Secrist-Ingalls, Brian Secrist, Beth Secrist, Kristen Rooker and Kelly Rooker.

he day before the Continental Congress’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote a letter to his wife on July 3, 1776 about how he hoped succeeding generations would celebrate Independence Day. “It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty,” the letter, on the Massachusetts Historical Society’s website, reads. “It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

Adams might be proud to see how the Denver metro area is following through on his exhortation, with fireworks lighting up the sky, sporting events, kid festivities and more.

Here is your guide to finding the perfect way to celebrate the Fourth of July. Unless otherwise mentioned, all festivities take place July 4.

There will not be a designated space to see the fireworks, and because of that, the city is encouraging people to be courteous of driveways if they park in neighborhoods.

New museum exhibits are well worth dawdling over Summertime offers opportunity to absorb intriguing shows

he Denver Art Museum has opened two recent exhibits that offer another way to spend summer hours, when one can enjoy an up-close experience of color and light, in contrast to the truly exceptional vistas and outdoor experiences that we enjoy close to home or within a few hours’ drive.

Exhibits are in the Hamilton Building, while the Gio Ponti building to the north is closed for renovation.

“Way cool,” one might observe!

“Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America” opened on the second floor early in May, running through Aug. 25, and might be of special interest to residents of Arapahoe Acres in Englewood and Arapahoe Hills in Littleton, who live in midcentury communities. Many other homes in our south area carry similar

Effort seeks civic discourse, civility among different views Better Arguments Project tackles the tech boom at metro-area workshop

When Coloradans hear news reports that Amazon or any national tech giant is coming to to the state, Sam Bailey figures they imagine an invasion.

“When you saw something on the news, like Amazon’s (HQ2 expansion proposal) the assumption we hear, in letters, emails and phone calls, is that 50,000 new people are going to land at Denver International Airport, come on down Peña Boulevard and ruin our lives,” said Bailey, economic development vice president for the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation.

On the contrary, he said: Most hightech companies starting up or moving to Denver hire locally, creating a multitude of new jobs for Colorado residents and boosting the quality of life.

“These are good growing pains,” he said. “They come with challenges, just as anything does. But I’ll say, though, it beats an out-migration from the state.”

The state’s economic expansion largely ignores much of the population, especially women of color, she said.

“The real issue is how do we manage the transitions as we go through growth and what are the unintended — or even the intended consequences — of this growth,” Calderon said.

Calderon said she saw how stagnant growth and economic decline affected

the state during the last recession.

“But back then, we also had choices about what we were going to do and those were made to the detriment of some people and helped others in their goal of wealth building,” she said. “So I want us to be honest about all that — about what are the costs.”

That disagreement was the point of a workshop June 13 at Anythink Library’s Wright Farms branch in

Civic discourse The workshop was part of the national Better Arguments Project spearheaded by the Aspen Institute, the Allstate insurance corporation and global educational organization Facing History and Ourselves. The goal is to promote better arguments among people who disagree, especially in today’s divisive political climate.

“Everyone’s views are legitimate; people have their views,” said Allstate’s Tara Leweling, vice president of corporate relations. “But at the same time, people are just going to war and not talking to each other. We wondered if there was something we could to help bridge the divide and help people come together in a constructive way.”

The workshop was the second event the Better Arguments Project F has hosted, after a March meeting in Detroit, Michigan, that drew an estimated 300 people.

Roger Brooks, president of Facing History and Ourselves, said organizers were paying attention to how the attendees spoke to each other and argued and would use those discussions to help frame future workshops.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis opened the workshop. Divisions in society — along economic, political or religious lines — are nothing new, he said.

“There are all sorts of different ways that make people feel different,” Polis said. “And yet through our civil society, we have to come together and have these authentic discussions that lead to a better outcome. And it’s easier to reach a broad consensus when you are not being pulled into different directions by narrowly focused special interests, and keep a focus on the big picture.”

That fed into a panel discussion featuring Calderon, Bailey and Colorado Sun tech reporter Tamara Chuang.

For Calderon, Denver’s tech boom provides jobs but not for the lower economic rungs who could most benefit.

That’s because many of their schools don’t have the resources to train them for tech jobs.

“They also face other challenges outside the classroom,” she said. “Outside the classroom, we see that twothirds of white students have access to a computer at home, but only about 50 percent of students of color do.”

But Bailey said the state does try to use new tax revenues from new businesses to help all levels, with investments in education and transportation.

“We never want to set a tone and appear desperate and say anything to get you here,” Bailey said. “We’ll show how you can come here, how you can grow here and how you can get engaged in the community.”

But Calderon said those discussions don’t include everyone.

“Sam, when you say `We’ are having these discussions’, who is the we?” she said. “Because those of us who are on the ground dealing with issues of displacement, your `we’ does not include `us.’ ” Respect and honesty Finally, organizers turned the discussions over to attendees, who talked about the impact of Denver’s budding

ARGUING BETTER The Better Arguments Project is a joint effort by the Aspen Institute, Allstate insurance and educational organization Facing History and Ourselves. It encourages thorough, reasonable debates on divisive topics.

It maintains that public policy debates — about race, rights, equality and many other topics — are necessary for a healthy American civic life.

Organizers have five principles they promote for having a better argument.

1. Take winning off the table. Frame an argument as a way to understand a different point of view rather than winning or even resolving differences.

2. Prioritize relationships and listen passionately. Participants need to really listen to each other, with the goal of learning.

3. Pay attention to context. Participants should acknowledge and understand the culture of the people they are arguing with and how it shapes their point of view.

4. Embrace vulnerability. Instead of limiting discussions to people that agree, participants need to step outside of their beliefs and prepare to have those beliefs challenged.

5. Make room to transform. The goal is to change how people interact in a public space, rather than win. Participants need to be prepared to receive new information and to build community with people they might not agree with. tech economy with their tablemates.

“That’s actually the heart of the Better Arguments project, which is you guys practicing what we are doing,” Brooks said.

He encouraged people attending the workshop to go forward and respect the people with who they talk.

“A better argument is about a whole bunch of things,” he said. “At every table is a diversity of opinion. We’ve purposely curated each table so that not everyone there thinks the same way or comes from the same perspective. So, be present, but find a way to respect the people you are with. Find ways to connect to them, because that changes the way the conversation goes. But say what you mean and be honest.”

his June, during Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association is hoping to raise awareness of this devastating disease by sharing 10 ways to love your brain.

Nearly 6 million people in the United States, including 73,000 Coloradans, are living with Alzheimer’s disease, according to a news release. The sixthleading cause of death and the only leading disease without a prevention, treatment or cure, Alzheimer’s kills more Americans every year than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

“Research is still evolving, but evidence is strong that people can reduce their risk of cognitive decline by making key lifestyle changes,” Amelia Schafer, executive director of the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, said in the release. “Based on this research, we have developed ‘10 Ways to Love Your Brain,’ a collection of tips that can reduce the risk of cognitive decline.”

According to the release, these habits will help achieve maximum benefits for the brain and body:

Break a sweat: Engage in regular cardiovascular exercise that elevates your heart rate and increases blood flow to the brain and body. Several studies have found an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline.

A major recent acquisition (2017) by sculptor Fred Wilson: “The Way the Moon’s Afraid of the Dark,” is a good place to begin one’s visit on the fourth floor. It’s a huge chandelier, 4 1/2 feet wide and 6 1/2 feet tall, made with Murano blown glass, clear brown glass and steel. Created for the 2017 Istanbul Biennial, Wilson incorporated Ottoman and Venetian lighting traditions — historically opposed to each other.

Colorado Refugee English as a Second Language Program: Teaches English to recently arrived refugees, who have fled war or persecution in their home country.

EGG FREE PUMPKIN-OAT PANCAKES Ingredients: 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed 1/4 cup cold water 1/2 cup oat flour 1 cup whole wheat flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 cup pumpkin puree 1 tablespoon maple syrup 1 cup almond or soy milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Method: Mix 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed with 1/4 cup of cold water, stir and let rest for 5 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine the flours, baking powder and cinnamon and whisk. Add the flaxseed mixture, pumpkin, maple syrup, non-dairy milk and vanilla, whisking to combine, creating a slightly lumpy batter.

Heat a large non-stick pan over medium high heat, or heat an electric griddle to 375°F and spray with non-stick spray. Use 1/4 to 1/3 cup batter for each pancake and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on the first side, or until open bubbles form on the top. Flip and cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes. Serve pancakes topped with maple syrup or apple sauce.

Area Walmart, Sam’s stores kick off fundraising

All Denver Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs have kicked off their Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising campaign to help treat local children who are sick or injured.

All money raised during the Denver campaign directly benefits Children’s Hospital Colorado to fund critical treatments, pediatric medical equipment, research and charitable care.

The Walmart and Sam’s Club campaign runs through July 7.

“Our associates take so much pride in raising money for this cause. Each

year we sincerely enjoy assisting with this effort,” Lakewood store manager William Roberts said in a news release.

To date, Walmart and Sam’s Club associates, members and customers in Denver have raised $15.1 million for Children’s Hospital Colorado, most of it one dollar at a time. On a national level, Walmart and Sam’s Club have raised more than $1 billion for CMN Hospitals, the largest cash amount ever raised by one company for a nonprofit in North America, according to the news release.

The need is staggering — 62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network hospital for treatment every minute, the release said.

To participate, shoppers can donate $1 or more at the checkout lane or selfcheckout of any Colorado Walmart store or Sam’s Club and spread the word about the campaign via social media with the hashtag #HelpKidsLiveBetter.
