Although the crowds were sparse and many shops remained closed along with the food court dining area, June 11 was an important day for Colorado Mills as the Lakewood shopping center was able to welcome shoppers for the first time in nearly three months.

Colorado Mills was one of several Jefferson County locations that were able to either reopen or expand operations as a result of a variance the county was granted by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment on May 8, permitting several activities in Jeffco that are not yet permitted by Colorado’s Safer-atHome order.

In addition to permitting indoor shopping malls in Jeffco to reopen after getting a plan for safety approved

by JCPH, the variance also allows gatherings of up to 50% people of up to 50 people in indoor spaces and up to 125 people in outdoor spaces. That applies to facilities like gyms, which were previously only permitted to open at 25% capacity or 50 people per room, and churches.

“This approval will help us responsibly continue the process of re-opening Jefferson County,” said Jefferson County Manager Don Davis said in a release. “We hope that everyone will follow the new guidance to ensure a safe and timely economic recovery.”

In Lakewood, Community Resources Director Kit Newland said the city was going to be making several changes to the availability of city recreation facilities during the week of June 15 in response to the variance.

Those changes include making sports fields once again making sports fields available to kids and adult sports leagues and allowing up to 25 people in the city tennis facility. She said the city will also be increasing the number of people who can participate in outdoor recreation activities it

has been organizing to 25.

Newland said that while the variance allows for up to 50 people on fields, the city is sticking with 25 because the amount of staff available to maintain the fields is limited.

The city is also beginning to look into opening other recreational facilities, although Newland said doing so presents several challenges and those talks are in tentative stages.

“Planning for that is very preliminary and the reason is because we have a large majority of our Parks and Recreation staff out on furlough,” said Newland. “And then it also requires putting all the health and safety protocols in place so I can’t give you too much detail on that other then to say later this summer we will have a couple of our recreation facilities open.”

The decision of which particular facilities reopen will rest on determining “who can and can’t come back right away,” Newland said.

The variance also allows graduations to take place if a plan for them is approved by JCPH. However, Jefferson County Public Schools spokeswoman Cameron Bell said there has not yet been any conversation within the district about changing plans for gradua-

tions, which are now scheduled to take place in August.

The variance also allows breweries to open in reopen in Jeffco under the same regulations put into place for restaurants. Under the Safer-at-Home order, breweries could only open if they were also serving food on-premises.

However, many breweries in Jeffco adapted to that rule by bringing in food trucks to serve food on theirpremises and many are continuing to advertise their food truck offerings on their websites even after the passage of the variance.

Museums and other indoor and outdoor educational experiences can now also reopen at 50% capacity. That includes the Butterfly Pavillion in Westminster, which was set to reopen on June 12 with new procedures in place.

Autopsy: Jail inmate died from drug intoxication Body tested negative for COVID-19 antibodies STAFF REPORT

An autopsy report identifies the cause of death for the man that died in the Jefferson County jail last month as combined drug intoxication with hypertensive cardiovascular disease listed as a significant contributing factor.

Deputies found 50-year-old inmate Paul George Abeyta unre-

sponsive on May 1 and later pronounced him dead. Abeyta, who was arrested on April 27, had told law enforcement he had been suffering from fever, cough and shortness of breath, which are symptoms of COVID-19, that had began earlier that day. He also indicated he had been a daily heroin user for the past five years.

The report states Abeyta’s blood contained heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine and amphetamine.

Abeyta’s brain and heart also exhibited swelling consistent with a drug intoxication The manner of Abey-

ta’s death is listed as an accident.

A postmortem COVID-19 antibody blood test found Abeyta was negative for COVID-19 antibodies. The sheriff ’s department had initially said his death was potentially caused by the viral disease. The county jail has had more than 40 inmates test positive for the virus.

According to the autopsy report, drug paraphernalia was found in the isolation cell where Abeyta was found unresponsive. Abeyta was being observed at the jail because of his flu-like symptoms as well as for opiate withdrawal.

Green Mountain protests to support racial justice Parenting group staged peaceful demonstration at major intersection

There was a protest at the corner of Alameda Parkway and Jewell Avenue on the afternoon of June 11. But it was also an opportunity for Lakewood parents to talk to their children about some difficult topics.

As the sun tilted over nearby Green Mountain, dozens of protesters stood on all four corners of the Lakewood intersection, waving signs supportive of the Black Lives Matter movement, and decrying police violence and systemic discrimination, as a good number of the passing vehicles honked in support.

The protest was organized through GM Mamas parenting group on Facebook, and shared from there to other community pages.

“A lot of moms wanted to take their kids to a protest, but were nervous about going downtown,” said Jocelen Smith, a GM Mamas group member and the organizer of the June 11 event, who brought her own “Black Lives Matter” sign.

Smith said repeatedly seeing a lone woman, holding a “Black Lives Matter” sign on that same corner for many days, and hearing about another community rally held days earlier in the same spot helped motivate her to organize her own “safe, peaceful, and close to home,” event for the other moms and families in the area to participate.

“I think it’s an important issue and I want them to learn early that it’s important to stand up for racial justice,” said Angie Anderson who brought her two children, ages 1 and 3 to the rally.

Anderson said her children were too young to learn everything, but she still showed them a Sesame Street town hall special on racism, and they had recently read a children’s book based on the life of Rosa Parks.

The protesters reported the vast majority of passing motorists were honking in support. One driver even had a sign at the ready to participate in the protest. that tradition.

“People are equal. That’s not really political,” she said.

Green Mountain -area mother Jennifer Morris said she came to join in the protest because she has two adopted black children, though, “even if we didn’t, it would be the right thing to do.”

Morris said she was thankful for the community protest.

“It made it really easy to have some of these conversations,” she said.

He said he was excited to come to the protest, “until I learned we’d be here two hours!”

Still, the youngster said he was happy to see so many people in his community come out to the protest, “to tell the world what’s going on and how to fix it.”

Steve and Krista Frank, stood on another corner of the intersection. They had wanted to join the protests and to

talk to their 6 and 8-year-old children about racial justice sooner, but said being part of the larger, and sometimes violent protests in downtown Denver, especially amid the COVID-19 outbreak seemed daunting, so the smaller June 11 protest came along at a nice time.

“They (the children) both helped put this sign together, and learn, well, who are these names?” said Krista Frank. She said the conversation that followed was uncomfortable, but meaningful.

Lakewood mom with 5-year-old twins Erin Lucas smiled and waved her sign, calling on white people to not be complacent. She said that over the years as more and more incidents of police brutality have been documented by cell phone technology, it just got harder for her to not try to do something.

“If your kids went to the store for Skittles and didn’t come back .... it’s an unspeakable injustice.”

Inaugural ’Lil Mac Hustle & Heart Scholarship awarded

Recent high school graduates Blake Schell (Green Mountain) and Susie Puchino (Littleton) received a pleasant surprise Tuesday afternoon.

Schell and Puchino were summoned to the Gold Crown Field House in Lakewood on June 9, where they both received the inaugural ’Lil Mac Hustle & Heart Scholarship.

“It means the world to me,” said Schell after being awarded the $2,000 scholarship which he’ll have when he begins his college basketball career at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. “It’s an amazing award and being the first one. It’s incredible and an honor to have.”

Puchino will actually continue her academic and athlete career at Metro State University in Denver on the women’s soccer team.

“I’m very excited and very honored to receive this,” Puchino said. “I’ve always tried to put a lot of hustle into my game.”

The scholarship is in the memory of Lakewood High School studentathlete Mackenzie Forrest. The fouryear varsity basketball player for the Tigers tragically passed away after a car accident during her senior year in 2016.

“We found these two (Schell and Puchino) with the passion and compassion on the basketball court and also off the basketball court, which was what Mackenzie was all about,”

Holger Forrest said.

This was the third year the Forrest Family has partnered with the Gold Crown Foundation on raising money and then donating it. This was the first year of creating the two scholarships per year and awarded to a male and female who were selected to the

Jeffco High School Senior Basketball Games at the end of each preps hoops season.

This year’s Jeffco seniors all-star basketball games were canceled this past March 19 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It definitely lessens the blow,” said Puchino, who missed out on the spring girls soccer season her senior year that was also canceled. “This (scholarship) gives me something to look back on for all the time I put in.”

Moving forward, Holger Forrest said the Jeffco Schools Foundation will get involved and help create a criteria for the scholarship. The plan is to also add a Foundation game before the start of the high school basketball season to raise money to fund the scholarship each year.

“Our hope is they continue to foster those traits of kindness and help their community,” Forrest said of Schell and Puchino.

Schell is actually friends with Mackenize’s younger bother Gavin, who graduated from Green Mountain in 2019.

“This was a great way to end high school basketball for me,” said Schell, who was a two-sport athlete in soccer and basketball for Green Mountain.

“It looses up everything a little bit.”

Police accountability bill gets final approval Gov. Polis had signaled support for the sweeping measure

In a bipartisan vote of 52-13, the Colorado House of Representatives gave final approval June 12 to a package of reforms to disclose, deter and discipline excessive uses of force by police officers, an effort to halt further slayings at the hands of law enforcement.

“There’s nothing new about black and brown Coloradans feeling a target on their backs,” said House Speaker K.C. Becker, D-Boulder. “It shouldn’t take viral videos of police brutality or massive protests all over the country to jolt us into action. But in any case, I’m glad we’re here now.”

Starting to cry, Becker addressed bill sponsor Rep. Leslie Herod, D-Denver, who handed Becker a tissue and patted her reassuringly on the back.

“Thank you for helping this body make history today,” Becker continued. “Today we’re honoring the memory of George Floyd and every other victim of police violence with action. We’re channeling our sympathy, our empathy, our sadness and our rage into making lasting change.”

With a final Senate vote approving House amendments June 13, the bill was sent to Gov. Jared Polis for his signature. Police earlier signaled his support.

Senate Bill 217, introduced in early June, contains several provisions discussed in recent years to address police use of force and accountability standards.

Among the provisions are mandated body-worn camera usage and disclosure of footage by local departments and the Colorado State Patrol, a ban on chokeholds, and the ability to sue officers directly for their conduct. An amendment added in response to the racial justice protests places limits on departments’ use of chemical agents and projectiles when handling protesters.

In the final House vote, 11 Republicans joined all Democrats in passing the measure.

“In that moment where you’re about to see red, where you’re about to fire that pepper ball at the innocent bystander at the sidewalk, when you’re about to fire that rubber bullet at somebody who’s exercising their First Amendment rights, when you’re about to fire a bullet at somebody who’s running away because they are scared,” he said, “this bill is going to say, ‘Stop.

Nothing is worth taking that life.”

In addition to Democratic leaders, the House Minority Leader, Patrick Neville, R-Castle Rock, voted yes on SB217, despite being “100% against” the original draft.

“I can be a yes vote and still be absolutely disgusted by some of the comments and the graffiti outside of these walls,” said Neville. “I can be a yes vote and still support our men and women in blue.”

Bill sponsors consulted intensively with police, victim and local government groups while drafting and amending the bill.

During the second reading of SB217 on June 11, Rep. Rod Bockenfeld, RWatkins, lamented that rank-and-file officers did not have a bigger voice in the legislation. He read from an email he said he received from an officer, illustrating the difficult situation that a rookie officer may encounter of needing to call out superior officers’ misconduct.

If “a superior officer orders an officer to effect an arrest ... the officer must obey, and he is the one who will be personally liable if the arrestee sues,” Bockenfeld said, quoting the email. “When they follow the orders of a superior officer, the superior officer should be the one who assumes the liability. Or the officer should be able to refuse the order if it places him in legal jeopardy.”

Bockenfeld mentioned riot response as a scenario in which officers could be disciplined for not following orders or sued for following unreasonable directives for use of force, which he deemed a “no-win situation.”

Due to the complications of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ability of the General Assembly to pause its legislative session until a few weeks ago, lawmakers happened to reconvene around the same time as daily protests commenced at the state Capitol.

Colorado moved quickly to create an omnibus policing bill, the first such measure introduced after Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, although other states have seen individual bills or amendments to address the topic.

The debate was freighted with emotion, in particular because of the personal experiences of several legislators of color. Rep. Monica Duran, D-Wheat Ridge, spoke of her son, whom she alleged police profiled and harassed in Jefferson County unprovoked several years ago.

“They proceeded to beat him and beat him,” she recalled. “When he was thrown in the back of a police car, he wasn’t sure if he would live or die or what they were going to do with him.”

Tearing up while retelling the story, Duran said that when she and her husband went to bail out her son from police custody, “we saw many families coming in. Many sons and daughters that look like mine.” A lawyer later told her, “Mrs. Duran, this is nothing new. This happens every night of the week.”

During the June 11 debate, Rep. James Coleman, D-Denver, delivered an impassioned speech asking Republican members to think of him as being just as easily the victim of police violence as was Floyd. Rep. Janet Buckner, D-Aurora, referenced his comments in her own plea to pass the bill.

“When I heard James speak last night, I heard my husband. My husband always said, ‘call it what it is,’” she said, referring to the late Rep. John Buckner, who she said was Coleman’s school principal. “And James called it what it is last night.”

Deputies who use such holds or other means of applying deadly force must explain their reason for using such force in their case report.

Body Cameras All Sheriff’s Office employees assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division, Patrol Division and Administrative Investigations Unit, as well as approved supervisors, managers and department heads, must carry and use recording devices during all contacts that are conducted in person with a member of the public where there is potential for enforcement and/or criminal investigation.

Recording devices must also be utilized in all situations that become adversarial after an initial contact. If a deputy is in a situation where a threat makes activating a recording device dangerous, the deputy must activate it as soon as it is safe to do so. Recording devices can also be accessed remotely by certain department supervisors.

Buckner said that every legislator has a constituent of color in their district, and implored lawmakers to “please keep them in mind.” Her comments appeared to sway the vote of at least one uncommitted member.

“If I vote yes, I’m voting for change,” said Rep. Richard Champion, R-Columbine Valley. “And if I say no, it feels very different, that I’m standing up for the police.” Champion said that he had been torn on how to vote, before acknowledging, “I didn’t know which way to vote until I listened to Rep. Buckner. Dear lady, you convinced me that it is time.”

On June 9, the Senate approved the bill on a widely-bipartisan vote of 32-1.

Jeffco Schools budget crisis pushed off to next year State finance decisions, government aid will help district avoid drastic 2020-2021 cuts

Jeffco Public Schools is no longer expecting the tens of millions in budget cuts it was bracing itself for in 2020-2021, instead anticipating that government aid can cover a loss of funding, at least for this year.

Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, conversations around Colorado school finance grew increasingly unfavorable for district budgets. The trend culminated in news that Jeffco should prepare for a roughly $74.3 million decrease in state funding, district chief financial officer Kathleen Askelson told the board of education on May 13.

But on June 4, the state’s School Finance Act was introduced in the House with reductions far below forecasters’ worst fears. Jeffco is now expecting state funding cuts of only about $35 million, or $31.5 million after a portion of the cuts is absorbed by charter schools.

As of June 10, the act still had several steps to go before final approval but “the information that we’re getting is it’s unlikely these numbers will change,” Askelson told the board at a June 10 study session.

In the meantime, smaller adjustments have also impacted the budget, leaving the district short an expected $38.7 million, with similar shortfalls likely in the years to come.

This year, however, the shortfall can be offset by government aid funding related to the coronavirus.

The district plans to use $36.5 million in aid to offset the deficit, leaving only $2.2 million of the shortfall to be covered. This could be funded through the district’s reserve fund, Askelson

said, but it is likely that further grants will come through and cover the costs without the district needing to dip into its reserves.

However, Askelson highlighted that the numbers aren’t final yet. There’s uncertainty around several items, including whether there could be unexpected costs associated with starting school back up under new health regulations.

She and board members also highlighted that there is no guarantee that school districts will receive federal or state aid next year. If not, budget cuts would need to compensate for future deficits.

“This really is kicking our cuts down the road next year,” board member Brad Rupert said. “That is coming on our horizon and so that needs to inform our conversations.”

With these two caveats, the board spent a little time discussing budgeting priorities. A list of priorities was provided to the board by the district’s Community Budget Advisory Commit-

tee, which unanimously determined that a cut to central departments would be most preferable, followed by a cut to capital improvement transfer and then a cut to individual school budgets.

If cuts to teacher compensation were necessary, the committee said it would prefer furlough days to other modes of compensation reduction.

Board members agreed with many of these asks but a few board members questioned the idea of reducing capital transfer.

The transfer is “designed to maintain the condition of our buildings,” board member Ron Mitchell said, so “when we get into cutting the capital transfer, I understand their recommendation but I would say we have to do that very cautiously.”

Rupert and board president Susan Harmon agreed, saying in their experience, cuts to capital transfer are rarely restored when better economic times roll around.

The board was scheduled to adopt the budget at a special meeting June 17.

Miners Alley Playhouse cancels remainder of 2020 season

Although the lifting of COVID-19-related restrictions has led many Golden businesses to reopen their doors with

new precautions in place, Miners Alley Playhouse will not be among them—at least not this year.

Instead, the Golden theater announced on June 8 that it will cancelling the remainder of its 2020 season.

“After months of back-and-forth regarding how to handle the rest of our season, and given the latest info coming from the state of Colorado, we are faced with the cold hard fact that people will not be able to come back to the theater in sufficient enough numbers before the fall, and that we won’t be able to enforce sufficient distancing to keep our audience and our artists safe,” Leslie Rutherford, the theater’s director of marketing and development, said in a press release.

The cancellation, which will likely close the theater for performances through the end of January, means that five of the theater’s scheduled main stage shows and four scheduled children’s shows will not be performed. However, Rutherford said in the release it is possible the theater will perform something for the holidays if safety permits.

But while the theater itself will be closed, Rutherford said that the theater will be offering an increasing number of online and outdoor offerings for the rest of the year. Earlier this spring, the theater made a video of last year’s performance of the child’s play “The Frog Prince” available to watch online. Viewers were encouraged to make a donation after watching the video performance.

According to the release, all Miners Alley Playhouse staff will continue to be paid during the closure. At least some of that staff ’s time will be devoted toward planning for the theater’s post-pandemic future, when in-theater performances will likely start out look different than they have in the past.

“We will be back in full force in January with a new, exciting and safe season of shows with small casts, designed to keep everyone safe.,” Rutherford said in the release. “We also plan on providing live-streaming viewing options, so that even if you don’t feel comfortable coming into the theater, there will be a way

Theaters are among the businesses that are still required to remain closed under Colorado’s current Safer-atHome rules. In April, Miners Alley conducted an audience survey of some of its theatergoers that asked them when they thought they would return to theater once it was allowed to reopen. 166 respondents said they would want to return “right away” while 249 say they would not return right away but probably in the next few months. 108 said they would not return until there is a vaccine in place while 116 indicated they were not sure when they would return.

Those with tickets to any of the season’s canceled shows will have the option of donating their tickets to the theater, converting the tickets to a credit to be used for a future show once the theater reopens or receiving a refund.

When the theater announced that it was initially postponing Moon over Buffalo, which was scheduled to begin its run in March just as the pandemic hit, 60% of ticket holders requested to donate their ticket while 25% requested a credit and 15% asked for a refund.

Pinball wizardry abounds at new Littleton pub Bring quarters, the kids and an appetite to venue on Santa Fe

ttention pinball wizards: Littleton has a new place to rack up high scores.

The Colorado Pinball Pub, a family-friendly bar featuring 13 pinball machines and classic pub grub, opened its doors at 6209 South Santa Fe Drive, across from Arapahoe Community College, in early June.

Owners Holly and Don Nikolich say they want to share their passion for pinball with the city they love.

The couple are the longtime organizers of the Rocky Mountain Pinball Showdown, which draws thousands every year to square off in high-stakes tournaments.

Though the COVID-19 pandemic meant the tournament couldn’t be held this year, the pub is a nice substitute.

“Opening the pub is like having a permanent festival,” Holly said, adding that there are plans in the works to host a “pop-up” version of the festival this fall.

The pub’s 13 pinball machines are drawn from the couple’s personal collection of more than 50. Dan, an engineer by trade, has a knack for fixing up old pinball machines, from the antique to the high-tech.

“It’s an analog thing in a digital world,” Dan said of pinball’s appeal. “It’s tactile. It’s a throwback.

There’s a nostalgia element, and we love when parents show their kids their pinball skills.”

The tables include classics from pinball’s 1990s resurgence, like the Indiana Jones or Elvira tables,

and some of the latest and greatest, featuring high-definition flat screens.

Holly said she’s grown to love the art of pinball machines, and how they reflect the pop culture of their eras.

Beyond a large beer selection, the pub also offers an impressive array of high-end whiskeys — which Dan is happy to talk about (really, try him).

Good food abounds: Holly’s specialty is fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies, dusted with powdered sugar. Other eats include calzones, fried pickles, fried mac and cheese bites and pretzel bites.

The pub features patio dining out front, and the plan is to build a bigger patio out back, facing the South Platte River.

“It’s just a comfortable Colorado place to have a drink and play some great games,” Holly said.

C-470 express lanes now open across south metro Project took 4 years; finished a year late

The newly built tolled express lanes on C-470 across the south metro area are now open for testing, during which motorists can use the lanes for free.

The opening along a 12.5mile stretch of the busy freeway comes four years after work began on the $276 million project -- and a year after the originally forecast completion period of spring 2019.

The project added two westbound toll lanes between Interstate 25 and South Colorado Boulevard across Lone Tree, Highlands Ranch and Littleton, and one westbound lane from Colorado to South Wadsworth Boulevard, near Chatfield Reservoir in Jefferson County.

Eastbound, a single lane was added from west of the South Platte River near Santa Fe Drive to I-25.

DAVID GILBERT off-ramps, widened or replaced bridges, added soundbarrier walls and straightened some curves, among other improvements.

The project was conceived as a way to address chronic commute-period traffic jams on the route, especially on the eastern stretch near I-25.

In 2016, when work began on the project, the Denver Regional Council of Governments said more than 100,000 vehicles were using the Wadsworth-to-1-25 segment

of C-470, and those numbers were forecast to grow 40% by 2035.

At the eastern end, the route connects with the E-470 tollway.

As of June 14, the lanes in both directions were open for free use. The test period is expected to extend into midAugust, at which time tolls will be charged on the new lanes.

The existing C-470 generalpurpose lanes -- two in each direction -- will continue to be

free to use, but the Colorado Department of Transportation projects that travel on the new tolled lanes will be faster during congested periods.

Tolls will range from 65 cents to $3.60 along various segments of the route, depending on how far a driver travels and the time of day.

Motorists who don’t already have an ExpressToll account are encouraged to get a pass at expresstoll.com before tolling begins in August. Tolls will automatically be deducted from the ExpressToll account when a driver uses the toll lanes.

Drivers without an ExpressToll account will be billed at a higher toll rate -- 40% higher or more, CDOT says. Cameras will snap images of drivers’ license plates to identify who’s using the lanes for billing purposes.

On C-470, there will be no free carpool use of the express lanes. But motorcyclists can ride free, CDOT says.

Motorists can enter and exit the express lanes only at designated entrances and exits marked with a dashed white line.

According to CDOT, the project was financed in part with $110.6 million in state

and federal funding, and $10 million from Douglas County.

The rest comes from loans to be repaid through tolls, the agency said.

The project was designed and built by a partnership of Broomfield-based Flatiron Construction Corp. and Los Angeles-based AECOM. Two years after work began, the state and the contractors agreed to extend the completion date from spring 2019 to August of that year. When the new deadline arrived, completion was delayed again, with the contractors citing bad-weather challenges and CDOT at one point holding the contractors in default, citing what it called misleading statements.

During the lengthy construction period, motorists had to contend with narrow, twisting lanes and, in some cases, fast merges into freeway traffic from shortened on-ramps. Media accounts reported complaints of gravel on the roadway.

Much of the construction work took place at night, and residents of neighborhoods adjacent to the route could hear beeping equipment and other noise as the project progressed.

My direct experience serving this community as a Deputy District Attorney gives me the leadership experi- King ence to run this office effectively. What single issue would be at the top of your agenda?

I am the only Democrat running who has served in this community and has a track record of bringing people to the table to make law enforcement policies work better.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted how you think the Jeffco district attorney should approach their work?

The office will be facing significant budget cuts. It is imperative that we focus on hiring and retaining attorneys who can ethically prosecute violent offenders who are a threat to the community.

Since I left the office in 2017 over 20 experienced attorneys have followed, leaving a dearth of experience. I am the only Democrat running who has the leadership experience to carry the office forward. Juvenile Unit, I have already created incarceration alternatives. As an example, I developed a program where we offered six weeks of education - without court involvement - for kids caught sexting. Because of our success I helped write successful legislation that removed the felony charge for Colorado’s kids who made a dumb choice with a smartphone. Similarly, I worked to keep 10-12 year old children out of the school-to-prison pipeline by offering them Support-BeforeCourt involvement. I have a proven record of reform.

How will you ensure laws are enforced fairly and equitably?

We must start by acknowledging that inequities exist - that systemic oppression within law enforcement has built barriers that disproportionately impact minorities and the disadvantaged. I will ensure that we recruit and employ prosecutors who reflect the community we serve, and that our prosecutors are not just adequately trained on systemic injustice, but that they seek and consider the voices of lived experiences in their decision-making. It starts with those decisions, but it is ensured by the transparent and accountable practices and on-going community engagement.

Jake Lilly What makes you the best choice for this office?

I am a former federal, state, and miliLilly tary prosecutor with 17 years of experience and 136 jury trials. I am the only candidate to have been a sex assault prosecutor, a voter protection attorney for President Obama, a defense attorney, and a combat veteran of the Iraq War. I have a plan to make our homes safer, our community stronger, and for common sense reform, including focusing on treating those suffering from mental health crises and getting illegal guns off our streets.

I am endorsed by Attorney General Phil Weiser and Congressman Joe Neguse.

What single issue would be at the top of your agenda?

My biggest priorities are getting illegal guns off our streets, treating the mentally ill instead of incarcerating them, and promoting an environment where survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault will be heard and met with

belief. Prosecuting sexual assault cases all the way to trial is the highest of these priorities and will contribute to a changing of societal attitudes towards survivors and their experiences. In protecting survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, we must enforce our current gun laws, including enforcing our red flag law, to ensure that guns are removed from the hands of offenders.

What must you accomplish for you to consider your term a success?

I firmly believe the job of the D.A. is not just to punish people, but to actively implement policies and work with community partners to lower crime rates. My office will crack down harshly on violent criminals who would prey upon others and lift the voices of victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and other violent crimes.

We will work to prevent crime by providing the necessary mental health, public health, school, and economic resources to prevent a life of crime and work to rehabilitate those within the system who can be saved.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted how you think the Jeffco district attorney should approach their work?

COVID-19 has clearly impacted both the numbers of people who can be incarcerated and the method by which the Courts work.

This crisis provides an opportunity to re-evaluate the workings of our criminal justice system. We can use this moment to focus on our arrest and incarceration policies to determine which violent criminals truly need to be arrested and incarcerated and which nonviolent and petty crimes can be handled with summonses, probation, diversion, and alternatives to incarceration. We will also have to address the tightening budgets that come from the economic slowdown as a result of COVID. Both you and your opponent have mentioned an interest in implementing incarceration alternatives. How will you make sure that happens as DA? The first judicial district has several specialty courts that operate effectively and are highly successful in treating people instead of incarcerating them. We need to expand diversion courts aggressively. A look at the Republican primary for the House District 22 seat Justin Everett will square off against incumbent Colin Larson

Larson took control of the office in 2019 while Everett represented District 22 in the Colorado House of Representatives from 2013 to 2019.

Everett lost in the Republican primary for Colorado treasurer in 2018 to Brian Watson.

The winner of the two will face Democrat Mary Parker for the House District 22 seat this Fall.

Though both candidates did not reply to Colorado Community Media’s candidate questionnaire, here is some basic information about Everett and Larson.

Less is more for changes to my quarantine routine ALCHEMY

have gray hair. There, I admit it. I didn’t always … in fact, I’ve not admitted it because every four weeks for the last 20 years or so, my hair miraculously returned to its (mostly) original shade. Now, however, after more missing more than three months of this miracle’s magic, the mirror tells me otherwise.

And I’m okay with that. Both my parents were gray early … my mother’s hair was a snowy white that I eventually hope for myself, and story in the mirror isn’t all that bad.

Seems appropriate for a 60-something. So, for the moment (until my stylist and I can confer),

it’s less color and more natural.

Which got me thinking – lots of us share what we’re doing and not doing, particularly when observing stay-at-home and safer-at home directives, and it occurred to me that I haven’t added much … unless I also took something away. And I haven’t really taken anything away unless I have something to replace it. For example – LESS: My beloved cookbooks, with their oil-spattered pages, hand-scribbles, and curling sticky notes. I much prefer the heft of books scattered around me as I happily select a perfect meal and note the recommended

ingredients (recipes, like most speed limits, are merely suggestions to me).

MORE: Downloaded recipes from the Internet. I turn to online sites now because I can search for a recipe that includes, literally, the exact two – or three, or even four – fixings I already have on hand … three different kinds of cheese, for example, a refrigerated crust, canned mushrooms, eggs (finally!), and brown-and-serve sausages from the freezer.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A problem for poor downtown areas Now I’m a 67-year old white guy that grew up in Colorado during the 60’s and 70’s so I’ve seen a number of these big city race riots over the years. I am sick and tired of being called a racist by a bunch of downtown BLM members and young, white apologists. I have traveled all over these United States and have met any number of black and brown folks working in various industries that work alongside white folks with no problems. They go to lunch together, barbecue together, tell jokes together and all around get along fine. In my experience, racism, while it does exist but not to the extent portrayed, originates in poor, downtown areas and is being completely overhyped for political purposes. Nothing good paying jobs won’t cure like was happening before Covid hit us. I, like most people I know (black and white), divide the people that we meet in this world into two categories, 1) Good people that you would like to go to lunch with and, 2) Jerks that you don’t want anything to do with. My question to those BLM members and to those white apologists is, which are you?

The problem at hand is, of course, the coronavirus pandemic. I know, I know, there are a lot of other things rather starkMichael Alcorn ly in the news these days dominating our attention.

But, in reality, the problem that effects more of us at this moment is the pandemic. And not because we’re sick, and not because we’ve lost loved ones, though that can’t be said for everyone, sadly.

And not just because the billionaires in charge of Major League Baseball can’t get their act together long enough to make a deal with the millionaires who play for them to get a stinking season underway!

But that’s a rant for another day.

No, the pandemic is effecting us because it has literally changed our lives. Baseball, for one thing. Schools talking about a variety of crazy scenarios to re-open in the Fall. Sporting events with no crowds; no youth sporting events. Our major entertainments not in production at all.

More people working from home than ever before, emptying office buildings.

And nobody taking vacations.

These are problems. All of the things that give structure, in whatever way,

to our civic life had been ripped from our lives overnight. And if you don’t think that had something to do with the size and virulence of the protests and riots over the last three weeks (where, mysteriously, the virus apparently can’t survive), then I don’t think you’ve been paying attention.

But, come to think of it, is that really how we would have designed our civic life to look if we had had the chance design it with intentionality 100 years ago?

I’ve long felt that the American education system is a creature of inertia—it exists on the momentum created for it 125 years ago. If we were to design the system from scratch right now, we would never follow an agrarian calendar; we would never build in an eleven-week break from learning, when memory bleed begins at five weeks; we would never base the entire system around the social advancement model we now use; and, I submit, we would never design anything with the same factory-spec, cookie-cutter outcomes agenda that we’re in the midst of recovering from these days.

Well … Wouldn’t now be a decent time to take a serious look at how we do things and design something smarter? A fourday week, where the fifth day is devoted to teacher training and student enrichment?

That’s only something we’re doing now because we were forced to in March. But, it’s Brilliant! Let’s keep doing it! Online learning—not so great for socio-emotional outcomes, which we all feel are critical for child growth, but it is pretty solid for both development and evaluation of skillsbased outcomes. Can we adopt it into the new environment to make schools more

Remembering my dad this Fathers Day

D

ear Dad, It’s almost Fathers Day and I wondered if you knew after you died of Parkinson’s Disease, that Mom finished your book Bail Out? It has a photo on the cover of you with your Mary McFerren squadron.

Stobie It is a terrific book!

You talk in the book about your experience as a navigator for a B-24 called the Fyrtle Myrtle. It was World War II in the South Pacific and evidently many men on your crew had pregnant wives.

On a bombing mission, your pilot, John Farrington, nicknamed “Mother” stayed in formation even though the hotshot pilot in your group hung around the target of nickel mines after the bombs were dropped.

You wanted to “get the hell out of there” before the “Japs” would attack, but “Mother” held formation for the hotshot pilot. It cost “Mother” his life and nearly yours when the Zeros buzzed in like hornets. Fyrtle Myrtle was shot down by the Japanese Zeros.

Pilot John Farrington and half your crew were killed instantly and the survivors had to bail out with parachutes.

Here I will insert Mom’s introduction in your book, Bail Out. “When that motorcycle pulled up in our gravel driveway, I felt a terrible apprehension it was bringing something I wouldn’t like. When the dogs barked, I had only a few seconds left in my happy world before being plunged into unmitigated grief. The messenger handed me a Western Union envelope and roared off into the night.

MISSING IN ACTION! Her world fell apart. She said you were very resourceful, very smart.

“I always told Bill he was the smartest man in the world. I was convinced that if he hadn’t been killed outright he would have been in one of those 5 or 6 parachutes reported by the military.”

Dad, your stories about prison camp are etched in my mind, such as the Japanese guard whispering to you, “My wife is in Los Angeles do you

think she’s OK?” (probably referring to internment of Japanese Americans during WWII in prison camps.) You made friends with everybody, didn’t you?

Mom didn’t know if you were dead or alive for 23 months. How stressful that must have been with baby Bill growing up never having met you.

Late on the afternoon of September 8, l945, Mom was preparing dinner with Marion Minger, a visitor, and they were startled by a racket out front. Pat Guilland, mom’s contact (because my mother didn’t have a phone) screamed, “Bill’s in Manila, he’s in Manila!”

Mom stared in disbelief. “Is it really true?” She cried.

Dad, you were close to death, weighing only 100 pounds. The Japanese moved you to another camp for those about to die, Ofuna. But with your friendly nature, you even got along with British jewel thieves. They crawled up and down ducts and brought you crab and sugar which saved your life.

A Japanese official hit you so hard with a baseball bat in your back it damaged your kidneys. After the war you forgave the Japanese. “Their people were suffering too,” you said.

Then after the war when we moved from San Francisco, California to Golden, Colorado you met Bill Hosokawa, Denver Post Editor, who wrote Nisei about the Japanese Americans who were interned in the United States. You two Bills became friends.

Your forgiveness of the Japanese impressed me.

Dad, you could have given up on life and died in prison camp like so many others. But you came back to Mom and your toddler son, Bill. Then in a brilliant move, you became a father to a daughter, me!!

Happy Father’s Day, I miss you.

And as to the intersection of the moment and the education system: if we could do it all over again, would we ever create the linkage between school funding and property values?

television, especially news. I am bombarded by the news from every direction, daily, so I have broken my long-standing routine of taking in the evening broadcasts.

MORE: Movies, concert videos, documentaries. We don’t subscribe to most of the streaming services, but we’ve had success accessing some of what we enjoy with my laptop and a large monitor. We recommend “The History of the Eagles,” Parts 1 and 2.

LESS: Jeopardy! My favorite quiz show – and source of new knowledge – is a victim of my TV news boycott, because it occurs during the same before-prime-time dinner hour. I do have 37-and-counting episodes to enjoy before my DVR is full, though, so maybe I’ll be shouting answers/ questions from my living room chair again soon.

MORE: Gin Rummy. I grew up play-

ing cards with my family, although we would drive Dad to distraction with my mom’s “Romanian rules.”

Family game nights – when we have them again – always include cards.

With the TV off, and in my current situation of only two players at home, Gin is the game of choice. If you know of other one-on-one card games, please drop me a line.

MORE: Sunscreen. It’s summer in Colorado … ’nuff said.

I also find that, instead of commercial radio, I turn to my own curated playlist. Instead of my slow-cooker, I relish using my years-long collection chef-grade pots and pans. Instead of a travel mug and a rushed goodbye in the morning, we enjoy coffee together on the patio.

It’s been said before, and I’m saying it again now with my most hearty appreciation: less really is more.

Gerarda (Gerry) DeWild Hermanussen April 19, 1924 - April 12, 2020

Gerarda (Gerry) DeWild Hermanussen was born April 19, 1924 in The Netherlands.

She immigrated to America in 1952 and settled in Wisconsin. On one visit back to Holland, Gerry was introduced to John Hermanussen, who was also a Dutch immigrant living in America (Nebraska). They courted from afar and married in 1958 on her 34th birthday. John and Gerry made their home in Lincoln, Nebraska and had four children: Francis (John), Maria, Michelle, and Suzanne. In 1972, the family relocated to Lakewood, Colorado where John worked at the Federal Center. Gerry was a stay-at-home mom who was very devoted to her family.

She was a talented seamstress and enthusiastically applied her skills to her family and home. She was very supportive of her kids’ many activities and sports and determined that they get a good education to live the American dream for which she and John had left Holland. With the kids in school, Gerry studied to be a realtor and her gregarious nature led her to be a top listing agent in the Green Mountain area where they lived. After John retired they moved to Sun City, Arizona, where Gerry honed her lawn bowling and card/game player skills. She became an Oma (grandmother) nine

times over as her children got married and started families: Brent and Bryce Hermanussen (John and Cheri); Jackson, Marlee and Sam Marcus (Maria and Brian); Zachary and Erica Sawicki (Michelle and Patrice); and Jacob and Jarrod Rivera (Suzanne and Rich). In 2005, they moved to Broomfield, Colorado to be closer to the kids and grandkids. John developed health issues and Gerry cared for him until he passed in 2011. They were married 53 years. In 2014, Gerry moved into the Meridian where she thrived with all the social activities, games, and lovely friends. Gerry remained active and healthy until the last year when she developed a heart condition that would lead to her passing on April 12, 2020, a week before her 96th birthday.

Just as she was devoted to her children, they were devoted to her, and in her final months, with her day and night so she wouldn’t be alone. A testament to the strong family bonds she forged, her children gave her strength in the end. Gerry was born on Easter eve and passed away on Easter morning, a holy day of rebirth and ascension into heaven. She lived a life of deep faith and now lives in eternal peace in heaven. Memorial services will be held on July 10, 2020 at 2pm at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Lakewood.

Communities get creative with Independence Day events amid pandemic

ndependence Day is still on the calendar for July 4 -- but this year’s holiday marking the nation’s birth won’t look like past celebrations.

Many of the usual community Independence Day celebrations have been canceled across the Denver metro area due to the state’s public health orders banning large gatherings of 10 or more, among various ongoing precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

For that matter, communities have canceled most large events scheduled through the end of summer.

Some remain hopeful late-summer events will return by August.

But that doesn’t mean that Independence Day will fizzle this year.

Here’s what to expect on the Fourth in several of the area’s communities, with plans subject to change on short notice.

Northglenn: Cool Car Cruise While the bulk of Northglenn’s July 4 celebrations will be virtual – from

Mayor Meredith Leighty’s 8 a.m. flag raising ceremony on the city’s Facebook page to the virtual bike, tricycle and wheelchair parade leading up to the holiday – the city will continue making classic automobiles a big part of the day.

Northglenn Police and the North Metro Fire Rescue will lead a phalanx of antique and classic autos on a winding tour of the city, with visits to each of Northglenn’s four wards, beginning at 10 a.m. The route will be listed on the web at www. northglenn,org/july4th.

For the bike, tricycle and wheelchair parade, residents are asked to decorate their wheeled conveyances and take picture or videos riding around their neighborhood and then send them to the city.

They’ll be posted to web on the holiday.

Arvada: Porch Fest The City of Arvada is working with the National Porch Placemaking campaign, an effort encouraging people to decorate the fronts of their houses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city is asking residents to adorn their front porches and driveways with patriotic decorations.

Residents can compete in an online competition using the hashtag #ArvadaPorchFest on social media or by emailing neighborhoods@arvada.

org. The winner will be awarded a prize.

Golden: Virtual festival Golden lost this year’s edition of its beloved, longstanding Buffalo Bill Days due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Golden Lions Club is determined to hold its annual Fourth of July Festival — albeit virtually.

The Golden Lions announced via Facebook it will be holding a Facebook Live event to give residents a show from the comfort of their homes.

The virtual Fourth of July Festival will begin at 9 a.m. Lions Club members will talk about projects they’ve done in the community over the years. Live bands will play and those tuning in can participate in virtual contests.

Local participating restaurants will be serving special dishes and Lions Club members will be at those restaurants handing out items for kids. The all-day affair ends with a recorded firework show from a previous year.

Lakewood: Porch Fest The city canceled its annual Fourth of July parade, which marches down Lake Avenue and culminates in a day-long party at Lakewood Park. But Lakewood is SEE FOURTH, P17

very city’s music scene is made up of extremely talented musicians that don’t make it big for a variety of reasons. But that certainly doesn’t mean their art isn’t worth celebrating and preserving.

That’s the goal of Denver Jamgrass, a 501(c)(3) arts and culture group that provides low-to-no-cost promotion for Colorado bands. And it’s made a new effort in that aim with June 26 release of its first annual Stone Soup compilation album.

The release features COMING like ATTRACTIONS musicians Meadow Mountain, Thunder and Rain, and That Damn Sasquatch.

“We have such an amazing folk and acoustic scene here in Colorado, and we wanted to archive and preserve the music for contemClarke Reader porary and future consumption,” explained Max Paley, Denver Jamgrass executive director and album producer. “We gave groups an hour in the studio and received some enthusiastic responses. So, we were able to get pieces from some of our favorite bands.”

The album was recorded at Swallow Hill Music in South Denver, and Paley said the hope is this will become an annual project, allowing Jamgrass the opportunity to share new talent every year.

As Paley explains it, Jamgrass was founded by Kirk Hubbard in 2014 out a fandom of musicians like the Grateful Dead. The organization started out recording shows at Cervantes and sharing information about upcoming performances on its Facebook page.

Eventually their efforts grew to include a podcast that features local bands, and is now up to about 23 episodes. Most recently Jamgrass started an assistance fund for musicians who have lost income due to the COVID-19 shutdown.

“The thing that most surprises people about the scene here in Colorado is the variety and diversity of musical styles, which really came through on the album,” Paley said.

“The album really shows all the Jamgrass is, which is not one particular genre or style.”

According to information provided

by Paley, the name Stone Soup was suggested by Jamgrass founder Kirk Hubbard after “a folk story that emphasizes community and encourages all parties to share a little of what they have for the betterment of the group as a whole.”

The HRCA canceled the 5K for in-person running due to COVID-19, but currently registered participants have the option to be credited.

The Town of Parker is hosting a porch party July 4. Residents are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs, grills, fire pits and picnic necessities to the front porch for a town-wide outdoor party. The event was created to celebrate while social distancing.

What about fireworks?

According to a June 8 post on the town Facebook page, Castle Rock still plans to stage a fireworks show on July 4 at about 9:30 p.m., weather permitting.

The town website says the fireworks will be launched from Santa Fe Quarry Mesa, located south of The Meadows, above Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course.

“This year, we recommend viewing the fireworks from your home or neighborhood if possible,” the website says. Full details are at crgov.com/fireworks.

That makes Castke Rock an outlier in the metro area.

According to a list compiled by KUSA-9News and updated June 11, these area communities have canceled their usual July 4 fireworks shows: Arvada, Aurora, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch, Lafayette, Lakewood, Littleton, Lone Tree, Louisville, Northglenn, Parker, Thornton, Westminster.

Scary stuff As a young man, I worked in a machine shop in Detroit, where the union rule on the shop floor was, “Right or wrong, we got to stick together.” Solidarity about all else.

It seems police unions follow the same dictate.

Witness recent events in Buffalo, NY. A film shows two cops on an Emergency Response Team (ERT) shoving a 75-year old peaceful protester to the ground. The man falls backwards, cracks his head on the sidewalk, and lays motionless with blood oozing from his ear as lines of ERT head crackers march by him to tangle with other peaceful protesters. Then the police lied about the incident, claiming the old guy tripped and fell. Eventually, the two cops were suspended and charged with assault. In support of the two offenders, all 57 cops on the ERT resigned from the team, demonstrating that above all else, some cops will place protecting their own above protecting citizens. Right or wrong, they’ll stick together. Rather scary, isn’t it?

Now Donald Trump is peddling the baseless suggestion that the old guy was a member of Antifa, a “terrorist” group in Trump world, which excuses the “bad apple” cops.

Our “law and order” president apparently believes the law only applies to protesters, “thugs” in his book, not the police. Even scarier,

I’m reading his bio and see that after graduating from Cornell Law, Jake goes straight into the Army. With all the opportunity of an ivy league education and a law degree, joining the Army would be about the last thing on my mind.

But off Jake went to fight in Iraq!

He volunteered to lead teams that liberated death camps. He was a prosecutor in JAG. He didn’t do what would make him rich or powerful. He did what he thought was right. I don’t see that enough in our leaders.

Right now, attention is being divided in a lot of directions, and I want a District Attorney who’s going to focus on Jeffco. Someone who stands up for what they believe in and knows the issues that need fixing in Jeffco. Jake Lilly does that. I believe Jake has what it takes.

What’s “conservative” about science denial Although I am progressive, I have reason to respect opinions of Republicans like Dwight Eisenhower, Nelson Rockefeller, Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, and John McCain. Richard Nixon, despite his faults, created the Environmental Protection Agency by executive order. Reasoned discourse between opposing views on what is best for our country is required for our democracy to work. But I fail to understand what is “conservative” about science denial. Then there is voter suppression, which is occurring in Georgia and other states under Republican administration.

Under the guise of the straw man “voter fraud,” Republicans oppose voting by mail (fraud must be rife in Colorado, because we have voted by mail for years) because they believe that universal voting is bad for their party. Perhaps that is true. But if the most sacred hallmark of our democracy, voting, is bad for a political party, instead of disenfranchising voters, its members should work hard to reform its objectionable policies, like science denial.
