Alameda International grads celebrate surmounted obstacles Class of 2019 graduated on May 16

Hundreds spent the evening of May 16 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House watching Alameda International’s seventy-first commencement ceremony, which included a choir performance, a band performance and a handful of student speeches.

In their joint address to the class of 2019, valedictorian Niky Nguyen and salutatorian Christina Hoang encouraged their classmates to embrace a number of different aspects of life: their identities, their occasional failures and their accomplishments.

Hoang added that for many of the students, including her and Nguyen, “tonight means being a first-generation high school graduate.”

Faculty and student speakers celebrated what the students surmounted to arrive at graduation, highlighting perseverance as a key lesson the students have learned over the past four years.

Polaske, Barclay to have preliminary hearing in June Suspects of April 13 homicide remain in jail

The two suspects accused of being involved in an April 13 homicide in Golden remain in the Jefferson County jail on a no-bond hold.

At about 4:15 p.m. on April 13, Jefferson County Sheriff ’s deputies responded to a report of a gunshot wound in the 800 block of Kilmer Street, which is near the I-70 and West Colfax Avenue interchange. The victim, Kristian Barclay Macleod, 44, was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead

at 4:50 p.m.

For their alleged participation in the murder, Laci Barclay, 24, was arrested on April 14 and Joshua Polaske, 28, was arrested on April 15.

Charges against Polaske were filed on April 22. Those Polaske charges include first degree murder, distribution of a controlled substance, possession of a

weapon by a previous offender — all felonies — and two violent crime counts.

On April 19, two felony charges were filed against Barclay — accessory to murder and distribution of a controlled substance.

However, on May 3, an additional count of first degree murder was added to her charges.

Arrest affidavits remain sealed for both suspects. Polaske and Barclay will return to court for a preliminary hearing at 8 a.m.

What Is Negotiated When Purchasing a Home? More Than You Might Think!

It’s easy to assume that the main (or only) negotiation in the sale or purchase of a home is the contract price, but it turns out that there’s a lot more negotiation — both before and after going under contract.

Most contracts are or should be countered, and not accepted as written. For example, there are 39 different deadlines in the standard contract — everything from when the earnest money check is delivered to when the buyer gets to take possession.

If the seller is given extended possession after closing, will it be free, and who pays the utilities? It’s all negotiated.

If a contract falls, it’s usually because of inspection issues, so the seller will want that inspection deadline to be as early as possible — preferably within 5 to 7 days. And there are other

deadlines which allow a buyer to terminate and get his earnest money back, so a good listing agent will make sure they are reasonable. For example, I have seen contracts in which the deadline for terminating based on the acceptability of insurance costs is a week prior to closing. That’s ridiculous, because it takes only a couple days to get that quote.

The second big negotiation in any transaction is over inspection issues. Some buyers will want to have the seller fix every single problem identified by their inspector. (Once my seller received an inspection objection notice that didn’t even itemize the problems but said, “Seller shall fix everything listed in the attached inspection report.”)

will not fix and what the seller might give as a credit in lieu of certain repairs is different in every transaction, and your agent’s experience in handling that process can be critical in obtaining a favorable outcome, whether you’re the buyer or the seller.

As I have written before, I advise my sellers not to fix many of the known problems prior to putting their house on the market, but to save some of them as bargaining chips during the negotiation over inspection issues. Getting a back-up contract in place also helps with negotiating inspection issues. If the buyer is asking for an unreasonable number of repairs, I’ll provide those demands and the buyer’s inspection report to the backup buyer. Often that back-up buyer will agree not to ask for any of those repairs, giving the seller the ability to tell buyer #1 that he won’t fix anything. This can be an effective technique.

Having multiple offers presents a great opportunity for negotiating matters that are important to the seller. For ex-

ample, a downsizing seller may have lots of furniture he’d like to sell. Rather than have an estate sale, I recommend making a list, with prices, of the items “for sale outside of closing,” and leaving it on the kitchen counter for every visiting buyer to see. Many times I have been able to have the winning bidder include in their contract that they will purchase everything on that list at the prices shown. In a most recent case, the buyer asked that all the purchased furniture be moved to the garage prior to closing — a sure sign that they bought the furniture only so they would win the winning war for the house!

If the home doesn’t appraise for the contract price, the buyer can demand a price reduction on threat of terminating the contract. Since the appraisal deadline is usually very close to the closing date, the seller may feel compelled to accept the price reduction rather than lose the contract. But the same reluctance exists for the buyer, so oftentimes the seller can negotiate little or no price reduction.

Jeffco to make budget cuts in 2020 TABOR limits put strain on budget as county continues to grow

The county’s funding comes primarily from property taxes.

One challenge that has prompted the need to cut the budget is the Colorado Tax Payer Bill of Rights (TABOR), which limits the amount of tax revenue that the county can keep.

The county released a statement on current funding, that notes “from 2015-2019, Jeffco hit the TABOR cap each year, requiring the county to refund $111 million dollars over the last four years.” The county’s website states, “the law requires that the amount over collected be given back to the tax payers the following year after over collection.”

This money would have otherwise been invested in “public safety, roads, mental healthcare, wildfire protection and other areas,” according to the press release. “The loss of this surplus funding has a direct impact on the level and quality of services the county can provide to its residents.”

However, population growth in Jeffco lends to the increased demand for services.

To keep a healthy balance and appropriate reserve fund, Jefferson County is looking at trimming its budget by about $16.1 million in the upcoming year.

This equals roughly a seven percent budget reduction in 2020 for all county “offices, departments and divisions whose budget is impacted by the general fund,” states a press release.

The general fund supports a variety of county offices and departments.

For example, in the press release, Libby Szabo, chair of the Board of County Commissioners, breaks the general fund into three primary areas of expenditures — safety and transportation, including the sheriff ’s

department, district attorney, coroner and transportation and engineering; stewardship, which includes the assessor, clerk and recorder and treasurer; and health and well-being, with the departments of public health, human services and parks and recreation.

Szabo notes that about 67 percent of the budget is spent on public safety, 25 percent on the stewardship services and eight percent on health and wellbeing.

Survey on cuts The county has posted a poll on its website that asks residents what services they would be “most willing to reduce” in the case of budget cuts.

Total vote turnout was 233.

Cuts to public health services got the most votes — 83 votes, or, 36 percent.

New road construction for traffic easement returned 57 votes, or, 24 percent. However, road maintenance and snow plowing only got 11 percent of S the vote, or, 26 votes to reduce these s t services.

Fifty-one votes, 22 percent, went to r cutting social services for seniors, children and families in need.

Reducing law enforcement services got the smallest number of votes — 16 total votes, or, seven percent.

“Tough decisions are ahead of us,” Szabo said in the press release. “We will rely on the elected officials and directors as the experts in their areas to determine how best to make these reductions, and we will work together with them and our community to prioritize what approaches are in the best interest of Jeffco.”

At their last scheduled bargaining session on May 15, school district leaders and employees continued to negotiate an agreement for their 2019-2020 contract — and scheduled a new final session for May 29.

The additional session, which will occur between the district and Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA) members, will resolve the potential contract changes the group has not yet agreed upon. The list includes setting the cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, added to employee salaries.

In previous meetings between the district and the JCEA, as well as the

Low expressed that such a raise would not cover costs from inflation and new costs for employees, such as healthcare plan increases. Having been with the district for 23 years, she added that she and many of her peers feel a higher COLA would balance out pay freezes employees took in 2010.

JCEA member Cory Bissell, a music teacher at Hackberry Hill Elementary, agreed that the district should prioritize raising salaries for longtime employees.

“It’s about the principle,” he said.

eventy-one graduates of Jefferson Jr./Sr. High School celebrated their accomplishments during the school’s Class of 2019 commencement ceremony on May 17.

Principal Michael James chose a special theme for the graduation ceremony, which was heroes. Upon receiving their diploma, each student took a couple minutes to recognize the heroes in their life.

“Love what you do, and it will never be a job,” said Jefferson Jr./Sr. High teacher Patti Carter during her keynote address. “There will be extremely hard times that will make you think that you can’t make it.”

But you can, she added.

“With every ending,” Carter said, “there is a beginning.”

D’Evelyn jaguars celebrate 2019 graduation Ninety-five percent of students earn college credit

n May 18, the 2019 graduates of D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School joined together at Denver’s Ellie Caulkins Opera House to celebrate a job well done.

The graduation ceremony’s lineup included faculty speaker Cindy Cannon, who shared a letter her father wrote her for her high school graduation. Cannon then left her spot at the podium so she could address the graduates face-to-face.

“Being able to sit and reflect on how much work it took to get to this point makes it absolutely remarkable,” she said.

Student and faculty speakers emphasized the academic rigor endured by the graduates, highlighting the fact that 95 percent of the students completed an Advanced Placement course, in which students earn college credit.

However, he said he spent years running from the possibility of failure.

McKinley is the director of public relations and government affairs at AAA Colorado. In his early 20s he was press secretary for former Gov. John Hickenlooper and was the first deputy director of the Office of Marijuana Coordination -- a job that was almost destined for failure.

“I was the first person in the world to have it,” McKinley said about the marijuana coordination job, adding that he was helping oversee regulation of a substance that had never been regulated before.

After a series of academic and early career struggles, he finally learned that he has to find lessons in failure and apply that to future success.

McKinley, an LHS alumnus, talked about how failure is inevitable but teaches valuable life lessons.

“Failure doesn’t scare me that much anymore,” McKinley said.

LHS graduated 458 students this year, among them was Peter LoSasso, who was the senior class speaker at commencement. His speech titled “In a Flash” reflected on how his generation documented their entire lives on phones and shared it on social media.

SeaQuest wildlife license suspended after repeated violations State investigation finds numerous unreported bites, burns at aquarium and zoo

SeaQuest Littleton must remove hundreds of animals after state officials issued a two-year license suspension, according to a ruling from the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife.

Inspectors found the aquarium and zoo housed in Southwest Plaza Mall exhibited a “negligent and intentional disregard for human safety and for wildlife,” according to the ruling.

Staff failed to report numerous injuries to visitors and animals, according to a CPW investigation, and repeatedly failed to comply with orders from inspectors to improve conditions.

The facility will be required to remove roughly two dozen species of fish, birds and mammals that fall under CPW’s definition of wildlife, totaling roughly 200 animals, said agency spokesman Jason Clay.

“We care about the care of the animals,” Clay said. “It’s one of our missions to ensure the protection of our natural resources, including wildlife, and the safety of the public around animals.”

The ruling, issued on April 1, gives SeaQuest 60 days to remove animals that fall under the facility’s state zoological license.

The affected animals have already been sent to SeaQuest’s other locations in other states, said Elsa MacDonald, SeaQuest’s vice president of marketing.

SeaQuest Littleton plans to stay open, MacDonald said, and has already replaced the removed animals with others that don’t fall under the CPW licensing umbrella.

“We’re making changes to ensure a happy, fun experience,” MacDonald said.

CPW inspectors have not yet confirmed that the animals have been removed, Clay said.

CPW’s concerns with SeaQuest Littleton date back to the facility’s opening in spring 2018, according to the department’s ruling.

A SeaQuest representative called CPW in January 2018 to inform the agency of their planned opening, and was told that obtaining a license for such a facility could take months and required proof that the animals would be properly cared for.

No license was issued, but two months later, CPW personnel learned the facility was opening from a news article.

The facility was exhibiting hun-

dreds of exotic species, investigators found. Management also did not inform Jefferson County officials that the facility would house numerous animals that would interact with visitors.

One manager was found to be keeping a two-toed sloth and two capybaras in her house, and later moved the animals to SeaQuest in violation of a state order.

The facility was issued a cease and desist order by the Colorado Department of Agriculture for numerous violations including exhibiting birds in overcrowded cages in July 2018, according to the ruling, but SeaQuest staff did not inform the CPW of the order as required by law.

Staff also failed to report the death of an Australian kookaburra bird in August 2018, according to the ruling.

In September 2018, a newly hired manager informed CPW that he found numerous unreported injuries to visitors in company files, including animal bites.

Staff also failed to report a sloth that burned itself on a heat lamp in October 2018, investigators found.

They also failed to report when the sloth burned itself more severely on the same heat lamp weeks later.

Upon learning of the injuries, “SeaQuest staff misled investigators in reporting that a veterinarian had been consulted, with turned out to be false,” the ruling found.

The sloth has since been moved to SeaQuest’s newly-opened Minnesota location, MacDonald said.

“Slash is doing awesome, and doing a great job of interacting with customers,” MacDonald said of the sloth.

MacDonald chalked up the issues to misunderstanding of state rules and regulations.

“In terms of those incidents and injuries, when you consider the hundreds of thousands of people who flow through the facility, a lot of those were relatively minor,” MacDonald said. “Everything is treated equally and everything is reported.”

SeaQuest Littleton is one of seven SeaQuest locations nationwide, according to the company’s website.

Three more locations are slated to open in coming months.

The chain’s other locations have drawn numerous violations and public protests, according to news reports.

SeaQuest offers guests the chance to get up close and personal with a variety of animals, according to its website. Guests can snorkel in a large pool with stingrays, for example, or feed a variety of animals.

MacDonald said the facility is going strong.

“There are still many animals for guests to interact with,” MacDonald said.

Opposition says growth measure not wanted The Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative will go to vote on July 2

After being first proposed in June 2017, the Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative is now going to an election on July 2, there is at least one community group that is opposing its passage.

Our Lakewood, a community group which advocated for the passing of the Lakewood TABOR vote, has opposed the initiative.

Trish Merkel has lived in Lakewood for nine years, and is a member of Our Lakewood as well as the president of the O’Kane Park Neighborhood Association. She said she understands the concerns about growth in Lakewood, but she doesn’t believe a residential growth cap is the way to address those concerns. She pointed to the challenges a growth cap has created in Golden and Boulder. The median rent price for an apartment is $1,597 in Golden and $1,903 in Boulder, according to the RentCafe website. In Lakewood, the average rent price for

an apartment is $1,444.

“When (the Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative) was first proposed, it was concerning to all of us that we would become a Boulder, or a type of Golden. Personally, I feel that it would impact development, new businesses from coming in, and it would increase cost of living in Lakewood,” said Merkel. “That would hurt the lower income families. People are already needing to move out of Lakewood, because they can’t afford to live here.”

Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul said he shares Our Lakewood’s stance against the initiative. Paul said the city has taken steps to address growth concerns in recent years, including purchasing more parkland and increasing fees on developers. Those fees go toward funding for parks and open space.

“I think what this initiative says is we’re building an exclusive community. We’re not Boulder, we’re not Golden,” said Paul. “It’s simple economics. You limit the supply, you have more demand. What’s that going to do to your prices? You have two communities who have done this who are two of the most expensive communities to live in.”

Paul said supporters of the initiative helped bring forward issues that the community is talking about.

“We reacted to a lot of those concerns, and we’re going to continue to do so in a process that is inclusive to the city and residents, rather than exclusive. At the end of the day, we all care about our community,” he said.

Steven Buckley, a six-year Lakewood resident, said he can understand why people support the initiative, and he doesn’t believe all residential growth is necessarily good. However, he worries that supporters of the initiative are misguided. “(The Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative) would be devastating for affordability not just in Lakewood, but in the broader Denver community, because Lakewood is such a sizeable part of Metro Denver’s housing market. I think it will have a lot of negative consequences for people who will be placed out and possibly me one day,” Buckley said.

When the Beacon85 Apartments opened up along 85 S. Union Blvd., Lakewood resident Alan Heald’s frustration grew. Heald, who has lived in the city since 2007, said the apartment complex sits where three of some of his go-to restaurants used to be, and it created an “ominous feel of a concrete.” “(The Beacon85 Apartments are) a short hop from my house. I have not talked to one person who likes it,” said Heald. “It doesn’t fit in the neighborhood there. There may be places that it works, but that was a bad decision.”

Heald has known Cathy Kentner, the woman who spearheaded the Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative, for years, and him and others are planning on voting for the city to implement the ordinance in the upcoming July 2 special election.

If passed, the Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative would cap new home construction at one percent per year, and it would require Lakewood City Council to hold a public hearing and vote to approve residential projects with 40 units, or more.

Anita Springsteen, a City Council candidate for Ward 3, particularly cited the upcoming Novel White Fence Farm apartment complex as an example of growing pains in Lakewood. The project, which is replacing the long-standing White Fence Farm restaurant, will hold 260 units with construction scheduled for the end of the year. At a Feb. 4 community meeting, residents cited concerns about

Rhonda Peters has lived in Lakewood since 2011. She says one of her concerns is overcrowding in school classrooms. Peters also cited her morning commute on Kipling street as becoming difficult due to high traffic.

“Anybody who wants to see (development) done with more thoughtfulness… They paint this like we don’t want growth, or development — like we’re not inclusive,” said Peters. “This is so important, and it’s hard, because it’s neighbor against neighbor, and everyone cares about their community.”

Legislators forming committee to focus on school safety Panel to be named

by June 1 in response to attack at STEM School STAFF REPORT

Legislators are prioritizing gschool safety following the May 7 shootings at STEM School Highlands Ranch.

On May 17, members of the state House and Senate announced the n pending formation of an interim committee focused on studying school safety in Colorado, according to a news release. The committee will look at issues related to school safety, mental health and the prevention of threats to students, staff and volunteers statewide.

Supporters of the committee include House GOP Leader Patrick Neville, of Castle Rock, and Senate Minority Leader Chris Holbert, R-Parker.

In the release, Holbert pointed out that 178 school districts in Colorado operate under local control, per state constitution.

“We also have voluminous state statute already on the books

regarding emergency response planning and armed security in our public schools,” Holbert said.

“This interim committee will begin its work by reviewing those statutes, the division of constitutional authority between school districts and state government, and then they will move forward on proposing solutions to better protect students.”

Neville pointed out what has been done.

“We began the process last year by providing financial assistance to schools to secure their facilities and fund trained personnel to enhance physical protection,” he said in the release. “We’ve also provided funding to enable professionals to come alongside students to assist with their personal needs should tragedy strike. We will do more.”

Two members from each caucus in both chambers will serve on the bipartisan committee, which will have the opportunity “to seek testimony from a wide range of experts to aid in their mission.” Members of the committee — who will be appointed by June 1 — will meet three times during the interim session and have the ability to recommend legislation.

JILL SCHROEDER-DOM About me I grew up in a musical household in Oklahoma. My mother was a church organist, and it was almost required for us to take piano lessons as a kid. It was something I wanted to do though.

As I got older, I was in band in middle school and high school. Toward the end of my high school career, I discovered I really enjoyed music and wanted to make it my career.

I came out to Colorado, because I loved the mountains. My husband and I will hike whenever we have time.

There was something else that drew me here though. I wanted to attended Colorado Christian University in Lakewood.

I earned a degree in French Horn Performance from the school, and I earned my doctorate degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Northern Colorado.

Today, I am an affiliate faculty member in Colorado Christian University’s music department. I direct choirs there, a community choir in Breckenridge, and I am the director of worship and music at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Lakewood.

I’m getting ready for another performance at Carnegie Hall in New York.

I could ask whoever I wanted to be part of the choir. It’s a beautiful combination. Two of my sisters are singing, my niece is singing and so is my husband. My worlds are colliding, and it’s been amazing to watch everyone get to know each other.

This really bothered me about Michael Alcorn’s editorial May 9, “Real-life wisdom from fantastic sources,” especial with his being an area teacher and author.

While I have no issue with Michael’s pointing out his greatest lines from “Science Fiction and Fantasy,” he confused greatly what was and is done in these wonderful literary creations with Hollywood’s movie entertainment. Maybe that’s why he finds success as sports gambler, and maybe this profession is what raises peoples’ ire. But I just don’t get that. Why wouldn’t a math whiz use his exceptional abilities at analysis, statistics and scores to make his living?

Hemingway may have won a bet with that composition, but it appears he swiped the idea.

In 1906, when Hemingway was 7, in a newspaper classified section called “Terse Tales of the Town,” a similar sounding item appeared: “For sale, baby carriage, never been used. Apply at the office.”

The first time I read Hemingway’s six words, I might have said, “How sad.”

But then my sense of interpretation kicked in.

Maybe the shoes were too small, and nothing else. Or maybe the kid was born with two left feet. Or someone who was faking a pregnancy and went as far as buying clothing for a baby, and painting a spare bedroom with clouds and clowns, got psychiatric help, and backed her way out of the deception, and ultimately placed an ad for baby shoes that had never been worn. Simple as that.

One way or another, it is evocative.

That growth is reflected in the event’s name, now Denver Pop Culture Con instead of Denver Comic Con.

onspiracy theories used to be something the American people might laugh about or just write off, but increasingly they’ve become a disturbing facet of modern discourse. The roots of conspiracy theories go way back in our country’s history, but mass COMING ATTRACTIONS communication like radio made it easier to spread the message.

An early adopter was California resident Mae Brussell, who had a popular radio show in the 1970s and 1980s. She used her platform to make spurious Clarke Reader claims such as linking the two Kennedy assassinations with the Watergate scandal. And people listened.

“What was so fascinating and a little scary was how relevant some of the predictions she was making are to today,” said Josh Hartwell, who wrote a play about Brussell. “She had this dedication, maybe even obsession, with research and connecting all these dots she saw.”

“Queen of Conspiracy” makes its world premiere through June 23 at Miners Alley Playhouse, 1224 Washington Ave. in Golden. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Directed by Len Matheo, the show features Abby Apple Boes as Brussell, as well as Chloe McLeod, Sinjin Jones, Bill Hahn, Erica Borrillo and Damon Guerrasio. It is set in presentday Denver and imagines the family that inherits Brussell’s legacy. It also takes audiences on a historical trip to Brussell’s heyday to see how conspiracy theories have changed over the years.

“She did hundreds of hours on her radio program, and I was able to listen to some,” Hartwell said. “The tapes were the most helpful for me in writing the piece.”

Hartwell said he wrote the play in about two weeks in January and has remained a part of the process as it’s come to life on the stage.

“I helped Len cast the play and have been to a handful of rehearsals.

lot can change in eight years — something Littleton residents Kendra, Jason and Ash Alder can readily attest to when it comes to how Denver Pop Culture Con has evolved since its first iteration in 2012.

“When we first started going, it wasn’t nearly as big as it has become,” Kendra said. “When I was growing up, nerd culture was very taboo, but it’s done a complete 180.

When I would mention a lot of this stuff, people had never heard of it.

Now everyone knows.”

This year’s event returns to the Colorado Convention Center, 700 14th St., from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1, and 10 a.m. to

The newer name reflects a wider swath of mediums and influences than comics alone.

“Since inception, our event has been about inclusivity and bringing different fandoms together for a weekend-long celebration; comics culture has always been a key component but not the entire focus,” Angel wrote. “While it’s true that ‘comic con’ is often synonymous with pop culture conventions, we didn’t feel that it told the whole story.”

The worlds created in comics from Marvel, DC and countless other studios remain the wellspring for many films and television shows that have made nerd culture everyone’s culture — and the con is a great way to bridge the gap between these fans.

“At our store, that’s one of the things we talk about the most — how to connect people who see all the movies with the stories we have at our store,” said Jonthan Garnett, owner of Hall of Justice Comics and Collectibles in Parker, which has had a booth at the con for about the past five years. “If you’re a fan of something you’ve seen onscreen, there’s a good chance we have something that will scratch that itch.”

Kendra and Jason, who used to own a comic book store, said the con works hard to balance a celebration of all mediums while acknowledging that comics are the source and are constantly evolving.

“I’ve also done a couple rewrites during the process,” he said. “It’s been exciting and intimidating, especially since I happen to be really judgmental of my own stuff.”

The show delves deep into the murky world of conspiracy theories, and Hartwell hopes audiences are willing to listen.

“I hope people come with an open mind, watch it and leave with an open mind as well,” he said. “Hopefully, afterwards, people will be more open to asking questions and not just thinking one thing is the answer.”

“They want all kinds of people to keep coming back, and that’s why they do,” Kendra said. “You can do what you want, be free, and not be ashamed of what you like.”

Another way the con works to keep bringing people back is by fostering the next generation of nerds. The

event is a program of the Pop Culture Classroom, a nonprofit focused on youth literacy, Angel said. The work the group does all year is supported by the con. As for the actual event, all kinds of options exist beyond shopping and getting a photo with a favorite celebrity.

“Programming also includes exciting kid- and teen-focused activities and events in The Lab, which is a large space on the show floor dedicated to young folks,” Angel wrote.

“The lab activities can include anything from learning to draw a famous character, to presentations and workshops, to finding out how to one day work for NASA or become an actor.”

For Garnett and many other attendees and exhibitors, the con is a chance for real connection with fans of all ages.

“We get to talk to consumers and fans, not just from the area, but all over the country,” he said.

Kendra said Ash particularly enjoys the con’s cosplaying aspect. But

Colorado Railroad Museum turns 60 Golden’s Colorado Railroad Museum turns 60 years old this July, and the museum is marking the occasion with a look back at the past six decades of exhibits, events and adventure.

The 60th anniversary exhibit will be on display at the museum, 17155 W. 44th Ave., through October. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

she loves immersing him in comic culture because of the positive way it affects him and other children.

“We take our niece as well, and their favorite part is taking pictures with as many cosplayers as possible,” she said. “I think it’s all a great influence on kids, and especially is great for reading. I always see it like going to Disneyland — you’re meeting the characters you’ve seen on the big screen, right there.”

Rock out with fellow Denverites Denver doesn’t have much in the way of music festivals these days, but Denver Day of Rock brings a bevy of artists to one of the city’s busiest stretches of real estate.

The one-day music festival that supports the work of Amp the Cause, a nonprofit that improves the livelihood of children by bringing communities to work together for their betterment.

Fort Logan bore witness to Western history Beyond veterans’ cemetery is old Army post dating to 1880s

ention Fort Logan to most people in the Denver area, and they’ll picture Fort Logan National Cemetery, where thousands of America’s veterans lay beneath rows of precisely-laid headstones.

But just up the hill from the solemn silence of the cemetery is the old Army fort itself, now hosting an array of mental health facilities, where much of the stately 19th-century architecture still stands.

Tucked away in far-south Denver near Sheridan Boulevard and Quincy Avenue, Fort Logan is “a place where you can step out of your car, take a moment to reflect, and envision the contributions of men who helped make Colorado,” said Bart Berger, whose great-grandfather Col. Henry Merriam once commanded the fort.

Visitors today can wander the fort, taking in the grand Victorian buildings of Officers’ Row, or pay a visit to the fort museum to gain a better sense of a place that played a role in pivotal moments of the American saga.

A growing nation By the 1880s, with the Transcontinental Railroad nearly 20 years old and the West’s indigenous people forced onto reservations, the Army was looking to close and consolidate its far-reaching network of pioneer-era forts, said Dr. Jack Ballard, a retired Air Force Academy

Denver, by then a rapidly growing metropolis, seemed a natural location for a new urban-type fort, Ballard said, and “Denver leaders campaigned hard for the fort. It represented a huge economic boost.”

The first troops at what would become Fort Logan ar-

rived from Kansas in October 1887. Named for Civil War general Alexander Logan, the fort soon began taking in soldiers from around the West.

Col. Merriam, who would be the fort’s longest-serving commander, arrived with troops from Wyoming’s Fort Laramie in 1889, Ballard said.

Merriam’s troops were nearby on Dec. 29, 1890, when American troops massacred upward of 300 Lakota men, women and children at Wounded Knee, though Ballard said Fort Logan troops did not take part in the killing.

Troops from the fort traveled to Trinidad in southern Colorado, where they protected deputy marshals as they arrested dozens of union leaders. They would be put to use amid other labor strife in northern New Mexico.

The fort also became home to a piece of high-tech equipment in the 1890s: an aerial observation balloon, manned by daredevil aerialist and tightrope walker Ivy Baldwin.

Baldwin and the balloon — dubbed the General Myer — deployed with troops from the fort to Santiago, Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898, though the balloon was soon shot down by Spanish artillery.

‘When I think of Kendrick, I think of love’ Kendrick Castillo honored at a community service to celebrate his life

ive like Kendrick Castillo. Be brave. Be industrious. Have integrity. Show love.

That was the overarching message at a May 15 celebration of life service at Cherry Hills Community Church. More than 3,500 people gathered at the church to honor Castillo, the sole fatality in the May 7 school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch that left eight other students injured. Less than two weeks away from graduating, the 18-year-old charged one of the two suspects to save other students.

The crowd — a mix of STEM students and families, law enforcement, politicians, Douglas County School District leaders and local residents — filled the sanctuary of the Highlands Ranch church to celebrate Castillo, a young man who, by most accounts, lived and learned more in his 18 years than most do in a lifetime.

“Kendrick just seemed to be happiest when he was serving others, but he did this humbly,” Charlene Molis, Kendrick’s principal at Notre Dame School from kindergarten through eighth grade, said to the crowd. “We are all better people for having known Kendrick, and now he is our guardian angel.”

of Kendrick, carried a gray casket, adorned with bouquets of bright yellow roses down an aisle to the front of the sanctuary. On the stage were a kayak, black and red dress jackets hanging from the ceiling and an elaborate robot, all pieces of Castillo’s life. He wore the red jacket when he ushered at his church. He was on two robotics teams at STEM. And he loved to adventure outdoors.

Friends, family and teachers who spoke at the service painted a picture of Castillo and the impact he had on others.

Molis remembers Kendrick’s first day of kindergarten. He saw a kid crying across the room, so he walked over, put his arm around the child and told him it was going to be OK. He gave 110 percent in everything, Molis said. When he dressed up as a cowboy, he was the best-dressed cowboy in the room.

“When he went to Mass, he wore his signature, three-piece suit,” Molis said. Guests in the audience chuckled.

Castillo was a friend to many.

He met Jordon Monk in an engineering class. The two had a lot in common — detailing cars, tinkering with electronics, the movie “Wayne’s World,” the song “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

“No matter how silly or crazy we looked, we didn’t care — because we had the time of our lives doing it,” Monk said.

Two pastors and a reverend, who each represented a different church in the Denver metro area, encouraged hope, love and healing in the community. A member of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal service organization to which Castillo belonged, along with a few of Castillo’s teachers, reflected on the difference Castillo made in the world.

Mike Shallenberger, Castillo’s engineering teacher for four years, laid over Castillo’s casket an honor cord for his involvement in STEM’s Technology Student Association.

“When I think of Kendrick,” Shallenberger said, “I think of love.”

In his father’s eyes, Castillo was a “gift” and a “hero.”

He was a man of faith, John Castillo told the audience. He knew right from wrong. He cared deeply about his family and friends.

“To carry on his life’s message, we need to be more like him,” said John. His wife, Maria, was seated behind him. “When somebody is struggling and moving into darkness, you need to sit down with them and figure it out.”

John emphasized the importance of making time for one another, of being present. He wants to do just that for the friends Kendrick left behind. His door is open, he said.

He’s a phone call away. He wants to hear the stories of his son.

“Love is simple,” John said. “I didn’t teach him that, he taught me.”

Used-book sale benefits Jefferson County libraries Foundation plans semi-annual event May 31 to June 2 STAFF REPORT

Find good books at bargain prices at the Jefferson County Library Foundation’s spring Whale of a Used Book Sale, May 31 to June 2 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

The sale, which has a more than 20year history in the community, offers more than 80,000 books, CDs, DVDs,

vinyl records and more with prices starting at 50 cents.

“This event is always popular with book lovers from throughout Jefferson County and beyond,” Jo Schantz, executive director of the Jefferson County Library Foundation, said in a news release. “Each year, our Whale of a Used Book Sales help us raise tens of thousands of dollars which in turn benefit the programs of Jefferson County Public Library.”

The sale begins May 30 with a preview night from 6-8 p.m., when Friends of Jefferson County Public Library members are invited to shop the sale before it opens to the public.

Early bird shoppers can get in ahead of the crowd May 31, from 8-9 a.m., for $10 per adult. At 9 a.m., the sale opens to the public, and admission is free.

The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

May 31 and June 1, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 2.

“These book sales are a great contribution to the Library and the community,” Donna Walker, executive director, Jefferson County Public Library, said in a news release. “They allow us to keep Library resources fresh, recycle books and materials responsibly, put books back in the hands of Jeffco residents, and receive foundation support for library programs. It’s the best

deal going.”

A new century As America’s military priorities increasingly shifted overseas in the 20th century, Fort Logan took on new life as a recruitment depot, Ballard said.

“By the time of the First World War, the countryside was starting to fill in, and there wasn’t enough room to maneuver,” Ballard said, but the fort proved invaluable as the country mobilized for the war.

Thousands of recruits and draftees mustered at Fort Logan, filling rows of tents stretching across the grounds before heading out to coastal military bases to be shipped overseas.

New Deal-era work programs shored up and expanded Fort Logan’s facilities during the period between the World Wars, Ballard said, before reaching a new fever pitch as American involvement in World War II loomed.

The fort became a subpost of the Army Air Corp’s Lowry Field on the east side of Denver, according to Ballard, and later added a convalescent hospital. As many as 5,500 men were stationed at the fort during the war, with many training as clerks.

Many temporary buildings were added to the fort grounds during the war — mostly temporary wooden structures, of which few remain.

After the war, the fort was declared

military surplus, and used for a time as a Veterans Administration hospital, before eventually being handed over to the State of Colorado in 1960 to become a mental health hospital.

“Having dozens of acres with mature trees and big grassy areas is a calming, healing environment for our patients that you might not easily find elsewhere in the Denver suburbs,” Polunas said. “It’s quiet and spread out in a way few other facilities are.”

The hospital currently has 94 beds for persistently mentally ill patients, Polunas said, down from about 400 beds when the facility opened — part of a nationwide effort toward moving mentally ill patients out of inpatient facilities.

Many of the buildings on Officers’ Row are used by an addiction treatment program run by the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Polunas said, and staff and patients alike take pride in the campus’s legacy.

“We’re stewards of that history,” Polunas said.

The hospital itself has its own significant history, Polunas said, as a forerunner in what were in the 1960s new concepts in mental health treatment, focused on quality of life.

“It was a response to the dungeonlike atmosphere of earlier institutions,” Polunas said. “We have a deep respect for the history of this place, and are proud to shepherd it into the future.”

Still others insist that the rest of the world is entitle somehow to James’ work – his own extensive learning, his competitive personality and his strategic maneuvering – saying: “So,

Say what? How could anyone, much less a stranger, possibly have the right to tell James how he “should” spend his money?

Along with his wife, James supports his family. He donates to multiple children’s charities in his community and, according to his hometown newspaper, James still takes out the trash.

One commenter had a perfect tonguein-cheek retort to someone else who said watching Jeopardy! is now boring: “Yeah, why watch professional sports either when a great athlete is playing?

Boring.”

James, if you’re listening, you don’t bore me. You thrill me with your talent, and, as always, may the best contestant win.

Among the Lakewoodarea athletes who competed was Amanda Opp of Lakewood. She earned a third place podium finish in 5A for her performance in discus. She also finished seventh in shot put.

Senior teammate Madeleine Hubych of Lakewood finished sixth in shot.

Michael Bennett of Lakewood ran a 40.44 in the 300 meter hurdles.

In 4A, Zach Jesaitis ran to 16th place in the 800 meters event, while he also anchored the Green Mountain 4X400 team to an eighth place finish.

Golden storms back to win first boys lacrosse state title

DENVER — Senior Joe Brock scored the most significant goal in Golden’s boys lacrosse history Monday, May 20, at All-City Stadium.

Brock’s laser shot two minutes into overtime of the Class 4A boys lacrosse state championship game just made it under the crossbar despite the effort of Cheyenne Mountain goalie Liam Hybl.

“This was unbelievable,” Brock said after his three-goal and one-assist performance in the title game. “Coming in as a No. 7 seed, we beat one, two and three (seeds). I can’t describe this feeling. It’s incredible. We worked our butts off for this.”

The goal sent the entire Demon squad in a frenzy racing toward the Golden crowd in the northwest corner of the stands after a dramatic 10-9 overtime victory on a cold and wet night in Denver.

“When we went to overtime I told the guys on the bench that we were due because we had two overtime losses this year,” Golden coach Mike Thumim said. “We were due on our side and sure enough … I didn’t even see Joe’s ball go in. I just saw the guys reaction and I lost my mind.”

The goal capped off an amazing rally from the Demons (13-6 record), who trailed 7-2 late in the second quarter.

Top-seed Cheyenne Mountain (16-3) looked in control at halftime, but Golden slowly chipped away. Eventually with 1:05 to play in regulation, they tied the game 9-9 with the defending champions. It was a goal from Brock that tied the game.

Something just clicked and they have been playing just lights out the last three weeks. That is when you want to do it.”

This season completed the circle for Thumim. The first go-around coaching Golden’s boys program before leaving to coach at Dakota Ridge, Thumim guided the Demons to the 2005 semifinals when boys lacrosse was still unclassified.

Cherry Creek ended Golden’s deepest playoff run 14 years ago with a close 9-8 victory for the Bruins, who went on to win the state title.

Thumim, who also teaches at Golden, returned to coaching the Demons in 2017. Over the last three seasons Golden has a 37-16 record, including back-to-back deep playoff runs. Golden advanced to the 2018 semifinals before losing to Dawson and now have the school’s first boys lacrosse state title.

“I love my school. I love my boys. I love the community,” Thumim said. “To have the hard work pay off with a state championship, the school deserves it. I love being a Demon.”

Golden graduates nearly 10 seniors, but should be right back in the mix with the likes of starting goalie Kyle desGarennes, Carson Brzeczek, Kevin Mulligan, Garrett Landmark and others returning.

“We’ll be back next year for sure,” Kirschner said.

Bissell, who has been with the district five years, works four jobs so he can pay his bills, he said. He added that he is unsure how long this will continue.

“As a young educator, I see the longtime educators and I think, `is that going to be my story, too?’” he said.

Bell reported that the average 2017-2018 teacher salary in Jeffco was $57,154, ranking the district fifth out of seven comparable districts. According to Bell, Jeffco also ranks fifth among districts for available funding.

During the session, JCEA members suggested the district allocate unspent money from the previous year toward compensation.

However, district representatives stressed the importance of utilizing that money to build reserves, adding that some of that money has already been earmarked for specific purposes.

Even so, all involved said they were confident that the upcoming sessions would yield a solution.

“We have a very healthy negotiations process,” Bissell said. “It’s not one side giving and one side taking.”
