I love to cook and bake. Traveling is also something that gives me joy. I’m getting ready to head out to Europe once I wrap up my last year here at Pomona High School.

Growing up, my house was filled with music. My dad has been a drummer all my life, and I used to make a lot of my own music. I made pretty much any type of music. At Pomona, I play bass in the school’s jazz band.

My friends, and I went through the Rolling Stones top 500 albums, and we listened to them all. I listen to pretty much any type of genre. Being an audio engineer, it’s something that I have to do.

Life after high school I’m an audio production student at Warren Tech. Not too long ago, I flew out to Virginia to audition to be one of the U.S. Army’s touring live sound engineers. I got the position, and I’m the youngest person ever to be offered the position.

In October, I’ll head out for the Army. There are a lot of different bands in the military. I will be in charge of a unit of about 40 people.

Outdoor Lab Foundation donates to Jeffco schools More than $60,000 in tuition assistance given last month STAFF REPORT

For generations of sixth graders growing up in Jefferson County, the annual Outdoor Lab trip experience has become a rite of passage.

To ensure that the experience remains available to all children, no matter what their household financial situation might look like, the nonprofit Outdoor Lab Foundation has been available to offer tuition support. This year, the foundation says it gave out more than $60,000 in tuition support last month alone.

The mission of the Outdoor Lab Foundation is to inspire community support and advocate for the Outdoor Lab program. Advocating at the program’s heart includes supporting Jefferson County local schools. This year, the foundation says it sought student tuition support from outside funders, and garnered donations at “an inspiring pace.”

This year was an especially important year for the foundation to provide support — it’s the first full year that many sixth-grade

students in Jefferson County were housed in middle schools instead of elementary schools. This challenged the middle schools to support some students’ Outdoor Lab tuition for the first time.

The following organizations supported the Outdoor Lab Foundation for 2018-2019 Outdoor Lab student tuition funding, totaling over $75,000 given out this year to local Jefferson County schools.

Increased computer use tied to worsening rates of sitting Sedentary life becoming more prevalent across all age groups in U.S.

Americans are becoming increasingly sedentary, spending almost a third of their waking hours sitting down, and computer use is partly to blame, a new study found.

Over almost a decade, average daily sitting time increased by roughly an hour, to about eight hours for U.S. teens and almost 6 1/2 hours for adults, according to the researchers. That includes school and work hours, but leisure-time computer use among all ages increased too.

By 2016, at least half of American kids and adults spent an hour or more of leisure time daily using computers. The biggest increase was among the oldest adults: 15% SEE SITTING, P8

Lakewood man arrested on suspicion of child pornography STAFF REPORT

The Lakewood Police Department announced last week that its Crimes Against Children Unit detectives had arrested Lakewood resident Joseph Scott Forrest, 49, on suspicion of Sexual Exploitation of a Child.

Lakewood detectives allege that Forrest had child pornography in his possession, using his Twitter account.

In its news statement the Lakewood department said “We would like to thank Twitter and our partners at the National Center for Missing and Endangered Children for their assistance on this case.”

Forrest had been a staff member at Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center. Lakewood police arrested Forrest on April 25. The same day, the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS), which operates the youth services facility, placed him on administrative leave.

The Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center is located in Golden. It Forrest is a secured treatment facility, housing 140 male juvenile offenders.

Man shot by Lakewood Police after refusing to drop large knife

At around 3:30 p.m. on April 29, Lakewood Police received a report of a man in the area of 4th and Harland with a very large knife. The caller reported that the man was threatening people and motorists with the knife near a school bus drop off.

Police learned the suspect moved to Third Avenue and Depew, and officers went to the area. The suspect then ran away from police, moving between Third and Fourth avenues

on Sheridan.

Agents gave him orders to drop the knife, but it “doesn’t appear that he did,” according to John Romero, a public information officer for Lakewood Police. Officers tried to taser the suspect, but it didn’t make an impact. Romero says the suspect made an aggressive move toward police, and officers shot him.

The suspect is alive at this point, and he was taken to hospital. Police and residents were not injured from the incident. Sheridan was briefly closed between Fourth and First Street.

Many Renters Are Unaware of Programs That Make Homeownership a Real Possibility Last week I wrote about the challenges facing buyers who must sell their current home in order to buy a new home and aren’t sure how to accomplish that without risking homelessness.

This week, I’m going to address the different challenges facing renters, including firsttime home buyers.

There are many programs for first-time home buyers, but many renters aren’t aware that they qualify as a first-time home buyer if they haven’t owned a home for three years. You could have owned several homes in your life, but if you haven’t owned one in the past three years, take advantage of these special programs.

A common misconception among people wanting to buy a home is that they have to save up for a 20% down payment, but that is simply not true. Another misconception is that if you put down less than 20%, you’ll be required to pay for mortgage insurance. There are conventional loans available with as little as 3% down that don’t require mortgage insurance. That contrasts with the 3.5% minimum down payment for FHA loans which do require mortgage insurance that

doesn’t go away for the life of the loan.

One of our preferred lenders, Scott Lagge of Movement Mortgage, compares the low costs of available programs to what renters pay when they lease a condo or home. Typically, renters need to come up with first and last month’s rent and a damage deposit. Some firsttime home buyer programs have out-of-pocket costs as low as $500-$1,000. Moreover, monthly mortgage payments are often on par with monthly rent payments.

When I bought my first home in Golden in 1997, I was single but I had a good friend (also renting) who agreed to rent a room with me if I found a suitable home. I found a ranch with walk-out basement that worked perfectly. He lived in the basement, I had a main-floor master suite, and he had access to my kitchen. We both saved money over renting, and I was building equity in my home. This is a formula that can work for anyone – if they have someone they’d like to have living in their basement!

The out-of-pocket is typically around 1% to the buyer. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have first-time homebuyer programs that provide a lower rate, lower mortgage insurance and among the lowest payments of all such programs. This does require closer to a 4% down payment from the buyer.

Scott claims that the best firsttime homebuyer program is his company’s Dream to Own Loan. This loan gives a silent second of 4% of the purchase price to be used for down payment and closing costs.

HomePartners.com. The way it works is that you only have to qualify to rent a home which that company then purchases so you can rent it.

They’ll pay up to $500,000 for almost any home (except a condo) that’s on the MLS once you agree to rent it at a pre-determined rental amount based on the purchase price.

You can rent the home for up to five years, knowing in advance what your rent will be for all five years, but at any time you can buy that home at a price agreed to in advance. Call us to apply for this program.

Elizabeth Crim and Kaylyn Buchanan have been friends since the second grade.

The two, now juniors at Lakewood High School, got together for coffee last year and started talking about how women are treated in today’s global society.

“It’s something we’re passionate about,” Buchanan said. “We wanted to do something that would empower the young women in our society.”

Thus, they formed Women Who Lead, an afterschool club for girls in grades three through five at Rooney Ranch Elementary School in Lakewood.

“We encouraged (the girls) to pursue their own leadership roles, now and in the future,” Crim said. “The girls became more confident in their place in society.”

The club had its first meeting in September 2018 and has met 16 times.

It had 11 members from Rooney Ranch and three student volunteers from Dunstan Middle School, also in Lakewood. Libby Vernon, a retired teacher from Rooney Ranch, served as the club’s advisor and Michael Orthun, an eighth grade English teacher at Dunstan, helped with some of the club’s programming.

“We care about equality,” said Lisa Lambert, one of the Dunstan students, who was speaking on behalf of herself

and the other two eighth-grade volunteers, Paschana Minter and Mazzy Mason. “We don’t believe that females should be treated better than males or vice versa. We just believe in what’s right.”

Crim and Buchanan designed and taught all of the club’s curriculum, which included a variety of hands-on activities that required the girls to use their imaginations and/or envision themselves as a leader. For example, club members created a female superhero, became entrepreneurs and started their own business, and learned about strong historical and modern-day women through books and videos.

“They learned the realm of possibility that’s open to them in life,” Orthun said. “There’s nothing that should be

allowed to hold them back.”

Vernon, who has known Crim and Buchanan since they were third-andfourth graders at Rooney Ranch, said she is proud of them “beyond words.”

“As a teacher, I know this was not a small endeavor,” Vernon said. “Seeing them put something like this into motion is inspiring and exciting. It has been phenomenal watching how much the girls in the group have matured since the first meeting.”

The club’s culminating event took place on April 25 with Jefferson County Commissioner Leslie Dahlkemper as a guest speaker.

Dahlkemper talked about her career as a journalist, a member of the school board and now, a county commissioner.

Third-grader Darwin Neff said she learned a lot from the club’s meetings, and especially had fun listening to Dahlkemper tell her story.

“I learned the importance of staying calm and not letting others’ ideas of us be the limit of us,” Neff said.

Crim and Buchanan are happy that the club was a success.

“We learned we can make a difference and that we can impact a group of girls who are willing to improve themselves and the world around them,” Crim said.

Buchanan agreed.

“Making change doesn’t have to be something huge,” she said. “Something small can make a big difference.”

School’s Styrofoam Stoppers accomplish their mission The fifth grade class worked to get the school to stop using Styrofoam trays

Ask Christopher Sorency’s fifth grade class at South Lakewood Elementary School about Styrofoam, and you’ll see their expertise on display.

The fifth grade “Styrofoam Stoppers” class will tell you about how Styrofoam is linked to certain cancers and how 21 percent of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a trash-filled vortex in the Pacific Ocean, is comprised of Styrofoam.

The school has traditionally used Styrofoam trays when it serves lunch to students, but that is old news now, having switched to recyclable plastic trays, thanks to the Styrofoam Stoppers.

The fifth graders used a variety of projects to bring to light the damage that Styrofoam can do by creating computer and board games, presentations, plays,

South Lakewood Elementary School’s Styrofoam Stoppers. posters and more. The class created an online petition at change.org that calls for all Styrofoam lunch trays to be banned. As of April 25, the petition has 1,185 signatures.

“When we realized how bad (Styrofoam) is for the environment, animals and how it can be bad for humans, we decided we should make a change, because kids are

eating off these (Styrofoam) trays,” said Jonathan Durso, one of the Styrofoam Stoppers.

In April, the Styrofoam Stoppers presented their

research about Styrofoam to numerous community members, including Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul and the city’s sustainability manager Jonathan Wachtel.

“We were amazed when we found out our school wasn’t going to use Styrofoam trays anymore. It’s just this one class that did this all,” said Merik Vonderlage, a Styrofoam Stopper.

“We made a change here at South Lakewood Elementary School. They did all the work, I just kind of stood back, and they directed,” said Sorency.

Sorency said he has been contacted by other schools about doing work that is similar to what the Styrofoam Stoppers accomplished.

Green Mountain Elementary School also recently transitioned away from using Styrofoam trays.

“We would like to transition more of our school lunch programs to be more environmentally friendly. It just depends on the buy-in from all the schools,” said Diana Wilson, a Jeffco Schools spokeswoman. “We think it’s awesome when kids jump in to make their schools more sustainable.

What you spend your money on tells a story of what’s important to you. Know how much is coming in each month and where it’s going. There are many online tools available to help you track it and categorize it for your review.

Four killed in I-70 semi crash 28 vehicles involved in collision and ensuing fire

A major vehicle crash on eastbound I-70 near the Denver West exit resulted in multiple deaths and caused a fire that closed the freeway in both directions the afternoon of April 25 at about 4:50 p.m.

The Lakewood Police Department reported 28 vehicles, including four semi trucks, were involved in the crash, resulting in four fatalities and six injuries.

The morning of April 26, the police department said the driver of a semi that was involved in the crash, Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, 23, had been taken into custody on suspicion of four counts of vehicular homicide. Days later, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office named Miguel Angel Lamas Arellano, 24, of Denver; Doyle Harrison, 61, of Denver; Stanley Politano, 69, of Arvada; and William Bailey, 67, of Arvada, as the four people who were killed.

As of the morning of April 29, Aguilera-Mederos was in the county jail with a $400,000 bond, awaiting formal charges, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

“The number one focus of the investigation is to fully investigate this crash and bring justice to these families,” said Lakewood Police Department Investigator John Romero.

Ty Countryman said that a semi truck “came down and ended up colliding with slower traffic, causing a very big

chain reaction.”

An earlier traffic accident farther to the east had backed up traffic and may have contributed to the crash, according to Countryman.

The DA’s office says Aguilera-Mederos holds a commercial driver’s license from Texas.

Countryman added that investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. Mechanical issues with the truck are still being investigated as a potential cause.

“For truckers, keep control of your vehicles,” Countryman said. “Without control it doesn’t matter if it’s a fully loaded vehicle or a hatchback, you’re still responsible.”

one of the semi trucks, sending a dark column of smoke into the sky. Eyewitnesses said the semi barreled down the right shoulder of the freeway to avoid some vehicles, before the crash.

West Metro Fire was one of the agencies that responded to the scene.

Spokesperson Ronda Sholting said that one West Metro firefighter sustained a minor injury after a tire exploded near him. Sholting said the firefighter was at back home and recuperating the following day.

I-70 remained closed in both directions until the afternoon of April 26, when CDOT opened the westbound lanes. The eastbound lanes reopened April 27 after crews finished repaving the section of roadway most damaged by the crash and fire.

Darin Barton heard it before he saw it.

“The flames and the smoke were pretty intense,” he said of the fatal, multi-vehicle crash that closed Interstate 70. “It was chaotic.”

Barton was at his regular panhandling spot with a sign that read “I’m hungry” — on the north side of I-70 near the Denver West exit — on the afternoon of April 25. Barton, 45, says he’s been homeless, working odd jobs and staying in and around the Golden area, since about 2014.

The truck plowed through the cars until it came to rest just east of the bridge, Barton said. Then it exploded into a ball of fire.

“Drivers were panicked,” Barton said. “They were trying to turn around and drive the other way. People were getting out and running from their cars.”

He stood up and yelled to a nearby friend to call 911.

Then Barton started running toward the crash scene to offer assistance.

“I kept hearing the explosions,” said Barton, who guessed he heard about 15 of them. “I was trying to stay calm and just kept pushing on until I found somebody who needed help.”

He said he helped a man pull a woman out of an SUV. She was banged up and suffering from what he guesses

was a broken arm as a result of the crash. Barton and the other man helped her into the vehicle of another woman, who was stuck in traffic at the time but offered to take the injured woman to the hospital.

Barton was on scene until about dark, he said, when a television news crew took him to its Denver studio to do an interview.

Barton said he did not know exactly why he decided to run toward the crash, while others were trying to flee from it. It was probably just instincts, Barton said, that made him want to try to help if he could.

The “chaos” of the crash scene “didn’t affect me until afterwards, when the shock of it wore off,” Barton said.

“It was like scene out of a movie.”

Bag-Off competition kicks off Jeffco Employee Food & Cash Drive Drive will benefit four local food banks

A little-known fact about the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office is that its captains are excellent grocery baggers.

In fact, they’re good enough to have won this year’s Bag-Off competition on April 24.

The competition “is a lot of fun,” said Capt. Jimmy Lucas. But the reason the sheriff ’s office competes, he added, is because “it’s for such a worthy cause.”

The Bag-Off, in its fourth annual year, is a friendly competition among county employees, elected and appointed officials and others in county leadership roles to see who can bag groceries the fastest. The Bag-Off competition is a fun way to raise awareness of the need for food donations in Jeffco, and it serves as a kickoff event for the Jeffco Employee Food & Cash Drive.

“They take the competition seriously and have a lot of fun with it,” said Mallory Albi, the public affairs coordinator for Jefferson County Human Services.

“But it’s really about how much we can give to the community’s families in need.”

Now in its 25th annual year, the Jeffco Employee Food & Cash Drive is a county-wide effort that each county of-

Last year, Jeffco employees collected nearly $6,000 in monetary donations for the food banks. As for food donations, this year’s goal is to generate at least 6,000 pounds of food — an increase of 500 pounds from last year’s amount donated.

“We have so many children in Jefferson County who are on free-andreduced lunch,” said Lynnae Flora,

deputy director of Jefferson County Human Services.

Jeffco Public Schools reports that the number of students on free-andreduced lunch varies greatly by area, but the district-wide average during the 2018-19 school year was 31.2 percent of Jeffco students were on free-andreduced lunch.

The summer months, when school is not in session, are particularly hard on these families, Flora said. The Jeffco Employee Food & Cash Drive helps the food banks provide adequate, nutritious food to Jeffco families and community members who need it most

Each county office’s employees are participating in the Jeffco Employee Food & Cash Drive, and community members may also make donations. Polis to ask voters to pass nicotine tax to combat youth use

Targeting teen nicotine vaping, Gov. Jared Polis recently announced a latesession bill to ask Colorado voters to significantly raise taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products and impose taxes on nicotine vaping devices.

Legislation being sponsored by Rep. Yadira Caraveo and Sen. Rhonda Fields, both Democrats, would ask voters in November if Colorado’s sales tax on cigarettes should increase from 84 cents to $2.59 a pack.

A recent Colorado government study suggests that 27 percent of minors regularly use the devices — one of the highest rates in the nation.

Experts say vaping can lead to lifelong tobacco use, and that making smoking more expensive deters youth from taking up the habit and encourages smokers to quit.

The average cost of a pack of cigarettes in Colorado is $5.60, including taxes, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The proposed increase would bump that to about $8.19.

In 2016, Colorado voters defeated a proposal to triple the state cigarette tax. The tax was last raised in 2004.

Some 7 percent of Colorado minors and nearly 15 percent of adults smoked cigarettes in 2017, according to the state Department of Public Health and Environment. The percentage of adult tobacco users has declined from 20 percent in 2004.

Muscle strengthening two days weekly is also advised. Immediate benefits include reduced blood pressure and anxiety and better sleep. Long-term benefits include improved brain health and lower risks for falls.

Kids aged 6 through 17 need 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. Regular activity is even recommended for kids as young as 3.

But only about 1 in 4 U.S. adults and 1 in 5 teens get recommended amounts.

College student Daisy Lawing spends a lot of time sitting, but says she doesn’t have much choice. Classes and homework on the computer take up much of her day.

“I always feel bad” about being inactive, she said April 23 at an Asheville,

North Carolina, cafe, explaining that she did a school paper about the benefits of physical activity.

“I try to walk a lot, try to work out twice a week. But sometimes I can’t because I’m too busy with school,” said Lawing, 21, a junior at Appalachian State University in Boone.

Peter T. Katzmarzyk of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, said people who sit all day need to do more than the minimum recommended amount of physical activity to counteract the harms of being sedentary.

“We’ve just got to really work on the population to get the message out there.

Physical activity is good for everyone,” he said.

After three years of delays, light rail line from Wheat Ridge to Denver opens

Connie Burg has been dealing with the loud train horns from the G Line and her landscaping, she said, has been destroyed multiple times when construction vehicles rolled through her neighborhood.

But she was excited April 26 as the long-awaited 11-mile commuter rail line finally opened to the public.

“It’s a big deal,” said Burg, who lives minutes away from the Wheat Ridge Ward Station, the last stop on the route that runs from there through Arvada, Adams County and into Denver’s Union Station.

“We’ve been waiting for a long time. We’ve been living with the construction for a long time. We’re excited about being able to get downtown and get to the airport.”

“It’s been a long time coming, but I think it’s really worth it to have (the G Line) running safely and for it to have all the checks on it,” Wheat Ridge Mayor Bud Starker said to Colorado Community Media. “It’s a great way for our citizens to not only get downtown, but go anywhere in the world.”

The commuter rail line, coated in yellow with the words “Wheat Ridge, Arvada, Downtown” on it, will give free rides until May 12. Quiet zones, sections of the railroad where trains don’t have to blare their horns, will be implemented along the entire line.

“This is so exciting to finally have this train open and having folks to be able to get around our community,” Arvada Mayor Marc Williams said.

“Our visitor center is going to be working with folks so that we can get the word out in downtown Denver, at the Colorado Convention Center and elsewhere to come out to Arvada and to check out all the great things that Olde Town Arvada has to offer.”

The G Line will run from 4 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., arriving every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and every 30 minutes during off-peak hours. The

“It’s tremendously meaningful for this to open — not just for we on the board or the staff, but for the people who have waited for it, or moved here, or started a business because of (the G Line),” said Shelley Cook, RTD board member for District L, which represents most of Arvada and the North Washington and Welby neighborhoods. “We feel like they’re co-investors in this.”

No spoilers — but Avengers movie highlights some learned wisdom

I

had an old friend, Jim, whom I taught with for several years, who had two children—one, an older boy from his first marriage, and the second, a girl, many years later. And Jim would often joke that when all he had was the boy, nothing would make him cry; but then the girl arrived, and he would find himself in tears at “Die Hard” and “Terminator.”

I had a similar experience. When my girls arrived on the scene, it changed me. I became much more familiar with things like compassion and empathy. And not that I didn’t know those emotions before, but the visceral reality of them never struck me. It’s never

quite the same thing HITTING to project emotionHOME ally into somebody else’s life as it is to project their life into your own when you are responsible for tiny humans that are like crystal shards of your own existence.

It changes you.

For instance — no spoilers! — watching Michael Alcorn the final chapter of The Avengers story arc is an extraordinary experience through the eyes of a parent. The battle scenes are epic, as they always have been, and the movie

has a great sense of humor about both itself and the whole Marvel Universe.

But I was not prepared for the very strong emotional center of the movie, the heart of it all. For 10 years, Captain America has been strong, Iron Man has been brilliant, Thor has been noble, and Hawkeye has been glib and skilled. Suddenly, at the end of it all, every one of these characters is given a story that resonates on an emotional level, and compels a father to look inward at things like pain and grief and loss.

And I am quite certain that none of that emotion would have worked, at least not with me, 24 years ago.

Just like I’m quite certain that 24

years ago I wouldn’t have ever stopped to wonder about the driver of the semi that careened down I-70 last week and ignited the worst traffic accident the city has ever seen. I don’t really know what happened; I imagine we’ll all find out soon enough. And I believe it likely that the driver is guilty of, at the very least, errors in judgment which led to the deaths of four people. The ripple effects of those errors in judgment will be felt for a long time and in many families. And, 24 years ago, I’m pretty sure my first reaction to this horrific accident would have been anger and, well, judgment against the driver.

But here’s a bulletin: Neither is the Second Amendment.

But it is viewed by many as if it were, and incontrovertible, even though practically every other long-held view, law, regulation and ardently held belief is periodically revisited, and often amended.

I am resigned to just about all of this by now. But I watch faces, and I see eyes widen whenever there’s an incident, and someone suggests that we do something about it, or, as Colorado legislator Lois Court said, “I am sick and tired of inaction when we see tragedies caused by gun violence.”

Can you imagine what would have been going through his mind as he cleared past the Morrison exit and realized that death was shadowing his vehicle?

I had a similar experience a couple months ago when I saw a Ferrari parked, shall we say, very badly on Ward Road. Turned out, the car was stolen, and the driver was killed in the accident. I think a lot of us greeted that news with a little bit of dismis-

They can also make different colored dots. Looking at the images of the Chilhuly glass will help get across the idea that one color is going to bleed into the other. Blue next to yellow will bleed into green. Red next to blue will bleed into purple. If children want to stick to primary colors, leave a large space between them. Children can make each filter different or make a set that look the same.

Once children have made jagged lines, spots and blobs, drape the coffee filter over an upside down plastic cup or individual yogurt container. Place

some newspapers under the containers.

Apply spray starch to the filter until the marker colors blend and the coffee filter is completely wet. Allow the filters to dry and do not touch them.

Once dry they will be translucent and mimic the look of Chihuly glass. They will be as delicate as glass but will not break. Denver does Derby Day in a big way

“Psychologists have known for a long time that exercise creates endorphins. I think to a certain extent, that becomes addictive,” said Harty.

And though Denver is more than a thousand miles from Louisville’s Churchill Downs, the Denver metro area has fully embraced the race and its culture.

This year’s Derby falls on May 4, and there’s a bevy of options to select from. Numerous bars all over the metro area will be screening the race and offering specials, but some places go above and beyond. Just some examples include a Mini Derby at The North Green, Derby Day at Union Station and Jockeys, Juleps and Jazz and a Pool Terrace viewing party at Denver’s Four Seasons Hotel.

No matter which party you attend, there are certain things they’re going to have in common: there will be mint juleps as far as the eye can see, you’re going to hear a lot of big band and Dixieland jazz and you better bring your A-game when it comes to clothing.

“Part of the success of the event is that it’s kind of the opening of spring, so people get to go out in their fancy clothes,” Harris said. “Both guys and gals take their outfits very seriously.”

Another commonality is many of the derby parties raise money for charity. The Mini Derby collects for Minds Matter of Denver and Next Step Horse Rescue, while for the past 18 years, the Denver Derby Party has been 100 percent for the Sean “Ranch” Lough Foundation, which provides full-ride scholarships to Colorado State University to inner-city youths.

“This is an event with a cause, and we take that very seriously. We tell our recipients they’re getting the same kind of scholarship as a star quarterback,” Harris said.

Mountain biking sparks enthusiasm among participants in popular activity

efore she became executive director of the Colorado High School Cycling League, a nonprofit youth development organization that produces mountain bike race series, Kate Rau worked in the intervention field.

Rau worked for Singletrack Mountain Bike Adventures, a youth race development program that offers summer camps and team programs during the spring, summer and fall.

She witnessed firsthand the impact that mountain biking can have on people, including children who found themselves in trouble.

“It strengthens family bonds, and it connects people to their community.

Those are elements that are proven to reduce the need for intervention — whether it’s mental health, substance abuse, feeling isolated, or being addicted to screen time,” said Rau. “I think we’re all, including kids, under a tremendous amount of stress.

Biking is pretty much year-round in Colorado, and it’s something you can do with your family.”

Harty lives in Lakewood, and he has been a strong advocate for getting people on bikes. He brought Cycling Without Age to Lakewood over a year ago, a program that provides three-wheeled bikes, called trishaws, to people who cannot ride a bike by themselves. The trishaws have a couchlike seat big enough for two people to sit on, while volunteers

“I think bicycling in general does that, and mountain biking does that even more, because you don’t have the stress of dealing automobiles. Mountain biking covers so many categories from tracks that are technical that demand a high level of skill, downhill racing and endurance racing. Mountain biking gets the average cyclist more into nature. Just that combo of exercise and being in tune with nature is good.”

Hitting trails for the first time Paul Rodriguez has been mountain biking for nine years. When he has the time, Rodriguez tries to get out on the trails at least three days a week. He is the co-owner of the Bicycle Shack in Arvada, a store that offers new and used bikes, custom builds, repair services and frame painting.

“If you’ve never (gone mountain biking) before, you should. It’s a good way to get outside and get some sunshine, of course, but one of the most important things that I like is it’s a lot less dangerous than road biking, because you’re not competing with cars” said Rodriguez. “You feel a therapeutic sense of feeling, because mountain biking clears your mind.

The only thing that you’re thinking about is what is in front of you.”

Those trails aren’t difficult, or technical, and they’re great for getting the blood pumping, according to Rodriguez.

One of his favorite apps to use when mountain biking is the MTB Project app. The app, available for Android and iPhone, provides a GPS on trails, mirroring a guidebook for

Colorado trails. It also offers a feature that lets you download trail maps for when cell-phone service isn’t available.

“You can scope out your route, which is good, especially for new riders. The difference between a left and a right on a trail can be heading back to the car, or another five-mile loop,” said Rodriguez.

For those who are looking to purchase a mountain bike for the first time, Rodriguez recommends

“It’s nice, just in case you find yourself in a tough spot when you’re on the trail. You don’t want to have to hike out of a trail and have to carry your bike,” said Rodriguez. “We’re lucky enough to live in Colorado, and I would encourage everyone to take advantage of the trails that our state has to offer.”

Spring has sprung and new stage productions abound in the metro area.

• New this week: “The World Goes ‘Round” at Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center is a revue of songs by American team John Kander and Fred Ebb, the duo that gave us “Cabaret” and “Chicago” and many other musicals.

Presented through April 28, the collection presents 34 songs by the team, presented by five finely tuned singers: Maggie Lamb, Traci Kern, Lynzee Newton-Jones, Matt LaFontaine and Jeremy Rill, accompanied by a swingin’ six-piece band.

Nick Sugar is director/choreographer and Donna Kolpan Debreceni is music director on keyboard. The live music adds a great deal to the performance as singers come and go in various combinations. Some solo numbers are included, but most include several and choreography is smooth and simple. Songs such a “All That Jazz,” “Cabaret” and “Kiss of the Spider Woman” are familiar, but it’s fun to discover new numbers such as “Arthur in the Afternoon.”

Conservative ex-Hollywood parents Polly (Abby Apple Boes) and Lyman (Michael McNeill) are not happy to hear about the memoir and wonder if she can’t just wait until they are dead to publish … Her brother Trip, (Charles Lederer), is a calmer voice that ties events together- and Polly’s fresh-fromrehab sister Silda rounds out this cast.

Silda is played by Pam Clifton.

A strong play about a family that has all sorts of issues, it was a finalist for the Pulitzer and probably illustrates a writer trying to come to terms with his own difficult world, director Traister speculates in her notes.

“There is no love greater than family and hence no wounds that cut deeper …” she wrote. Probably the whole production will jell a bit further as these actors work together. At which point, it will be even more poignant to watch.

LAKEWOOD — The snowstorm that blew into the Metro Area on Monday night couldn’t derail Lakewood’s boys lacrosse winning streak.

The Tigers (9-5, 6-1 in 5A Jeffco) won their third straight conference game by doubling up on Dakota Ridge 12-6 at Trailblazer Stadium. Lakewood finished second behind Class 5A Jeffco League champion Valor Christian (14-0, 7-0) in the conference standings.

Lakewood was led by its foursome of seniors. Jacob Brunner and Ethan Mauterer had three goals each for the Tigers. Pierce Holley added a trio of tallies and Kegan Hufford had a pair of goals.

Dakota Ridge (5-8, 3-4) was led by seniors Drew Eickelman and Jacobi Villamaria. Both had two goals each. Seniors Gage Evans and Ryan Kissinger also had a goal apiece.

hen spring rolls around, it’s the time that the Colorado High Schools Activities Association Legislative Committee gets together to approve or shoot down possible changes to Colorado high school sports.

Each year I have mixed reactions, ranging OVERTIME from “Why?” to “It’s about time.”

According to CHSAANow. com, the most notable revision to come from the CHSAA Legislative Committee annual meeting on April 24 was Jim Benton the approval of the pilot sports of boys volleyball, girls wrestling and unified bowling to become sanctioned sports for the 2020-21 season.

Boys volleyball will be a spring sport, girls wrestling will compete in the winter and unified bowling will be held during the fall and winter seasons.

The three sports were the first new activities to be sanctioned in more than a decade. Field hockey was approved in 1996 and added in 1997. Girls lacrosse was sanctioned in 1997 and played its first official season in 1998. Boys lacrosse had its first season in 1999 after gaining approval in 1998.

Among the other revisions ruled on by the committee were: • Girls lacrosse has added a second classification and will split the 58 current teams into 5A and 4A groups. How to divide teams and the enrollment guidelines still need to be determined.

• A fresh approach toward seeding the 5A-1A football playoffs will start next fall with the RPI, MaxPreps rankings, Packard rankings and CHSAANow.com coaches poll equally weighed in one of the chief basics.

• A proposal to create a 6A classification football division was defeated.

• Field hockey will have a different mercy rule for regular-season games. A five-goal differential will create a running clock, a six-goal difference will cause the leading ream to lose a player and a sevengoal differential means the leading team will lose a second player. An SEE BENTON, P25

WHEAT RIDGE — Wheat Ridge baseball coach Adam Miller would love to have newly named Chuck Griffith Jr. Field be the location for a Class 4A regional tournament May 18.

“We kind of control our own destiny which is where we want to be,” Miller said after the Farmers’ 6-1 victory over Evergreen improved Wheat Ridge to 5-0 in 4A Jeffco League play.

“I’ve always said anytime we have one the league championship that usually leads to a state-bound team because you get to host and we’d get to play here. League championship is very important.”

The most important hit Tuesday, April 23, was a two-run home run by Wheat Ridge junior Dominic Brock that began a five-run bottom of the sixth inning by the Farmers.

“I ran into it at the right time to help out the team,” Bronk said of his two-run home run. “It was perfect timing and got the mojo going.”

Evergreen senior pitcher Paul Schreffler had given up just one run on three hits coming to the sixth inning. A lead-off single by sophomore Wes Miller, followed by the home run

“That is as good of a game we’ve played in league in a while,” Coach Miller said. “That was good. It’s a good win for us.”

Wheat Ridge senior pitcher Aaron Arcilise was masterful again to pick up his sixth victory on the hill. Arcilise threw a complete game while striking out nine and walking just one.

“I just wanted to keep pounding the zone and not walking anybody, get the outs you can get,” Arcilise said. We didn’t want to give them scoring opportunities with free bas-

erunners.”

Arcilise was touched up for three hits in the first inning, but limited the damage to just a single run on an RBI hit by Evergreen senior Bryce Pearson. It was the first loss for Schreffler, who had a 5-1 record last season with a 2.62 ERA for the Cougars during their run to the state tournament.

“He (Schreffler) is a great pitcher.

He hits all his locations,” Bronk said. “We saw him enough times where everyone started picking him up and we executed perfectly.”

Evergreen (10-8, 4-4 in 4A Jeffco) suffered an 11-10 loss to the Farmers (12-4, 7-0) on Thursday, April 25. It’s looking like the 4A Jeffco League title will come down to rivals Golden (12-5, 6-1) and Wheat Ridge. The Demons and Farmers are scheduled to face eachother in back-to-back home-and-away games on May 7 and 9.

• Softball’s mercy rule has been tweaked and the game will end if a team is ahead by 15 runs after three innings, 12 runs after four or 10 runs after five. And, a double bag will be used at first. The white bag will remain in the same place and used by the first baseman during the game.

A second orange bag will be directly to the right of the white bag in foul territory and the batter will use it on run-through plays at first base. If the batter touches the white bag on a runthrough play, she would be called out.

• Basketball and soccer officials will get more pay. Basketball officials working on a three-person crew will earn $60 per game next season compared to $53, while a soccer center referee will be paid $59 and $54.50 for assistant referees. Travel stipends were increased and football officials had previously been awarded an increase to $61 a game for the 2020-22 cycle.

• Swimmers will be required to compete in a minimum of six meets to qualify for the state championships.

Rolling, rolling, rolling There was a recent change of head boys basketball coaches at Mountain Vista but there will still be a Wood running the program.

Bob Wood, who compiled a 198-84 overall record as a head coach, which included 11 seasons at Mountain Vista, has stepped down and his 37-yearold son Brian is the new head coach.

“I’m very excited taking over at Mountain Vista,” said Brian Wood.

“My dad is going to be my varsity assistant so he’ll be very involved.

We had been hoping to do something like this since we started coaching at Mountain Vista 11 years ago.”

Brian Wood, who at one time was the career scoring leader in Colorado and is now second after scoring 2,551 points at Buena Vista playing for Bob Wood, has been a junior varsity coach and assistant for his dad at Vista.

“We plan on continuing to play fast and applying pressure on defense,” said Brian Wood. “Some things will be changed based on personnel but we plan to keep Vista basketball rolling.

Record setter Senior Max Tennant, a Cherry Creek graduate, has the Ohio Wesleyan and North Coast Athletic Conference career goals record with 249, which is sixth all-time in NCAA Division III history.

Ohio Wesleyan had one more game remaining during the regular season and the NCAC tournament, so more goals could be added to his career records.
