Golden Moon wins gold at spirits competition STAFF REPORT

Golden Moon Distillery received gold medals for its Gunfighter 13, a 13-yearold Tennessee orphan cask bourbon, and Principium, a Colorado single malt whiskey, entries at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Founded in 2008 by Master Distiller Stephen Gould and Karen Knight, Golden Moon also was recently named Distillery of the Year by the American Distilling Institute at its 16th annual Craft Spirits Conference & Expo on March 19 in Denver.

“It’s been a busy few weeks between being named Distillery of the Year

by ADI and taking gold medals at the World Gin Awards and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition,” Gould said in a news release. “We’ve been very fortunate this spring to get this level of attention and number of accolades from the spirits industry.

Golden Moon is headed in a great direction.”

Golden Moon Distillery is distributed in 15 states in the United States, as well as internationally in the UK, Italy, Germany and Denmark. Within the next year, Gould plans to have presence in 20 states as well as India and Japan.

Timing the Sale of Your Current Home and Purchase of New Home Can Be Challenging

Have you faced this dilemma? You want to buy a home that better fits your family’s needs, but you are stymied by the need to sell your current home to pay for the next one.

So you stay put in a home that doesn’t quite meet your needs.

(I’ll write about the challenges facing renters who want to become home owners in next week’s column.)

There are several ways to tackle the challenge of buying a home when it depends on selling your current home. Let’s look at different scenarios based, first of all, on the amount of equity you have in your current home.

If you own your home “free and clear” and are downsizing to a lesser priced home, the easiest path is to take out a home equity line of credit (or HELOC) on your current home. This kind of loan is easier to obtain than a standard mortgage, especially when done through a credit union. Note: You must do this before going on the market.

When I obtained a HELOC from a credit union, they didn’t even charge for title insurance and did only a “drive-by” appraisal, and the closing took place at the loan officer’s desk with no closing fee. It couldn’t have been easier.

If you have a mortgage on your home but still have substantial equity, a HELOC can provide the cash you need for a 20% down payment, which is what’s required to get the most favorable interest rate on the mortgage for the home you’re

buying. You would no longer be a cash buyer for your new home, and the mortgage lender for your home purchase may make the sale of your current home a condition for approving the loan on your new home, depending on the size of your income and the ratio of your debts to your income. But that doesn’t mean you can’t succeed in buying the new home.

Under the right circumstances, a seller and his/her listing agent will consider an offer that is contingent on the sale of the buyer’s current home. I have succeeded in this process as a buyer’s agent by showing that the buyer’s home is ready to be listed immediately and will be priced to sell quickly based on a market analysis.

Don’t expect, however, to win a bidding war against non-contingent buyers.

You can avoid bidding wars and succeed with a contingent offer by looking only at homes that have been on the market over two weeks. Your agent can set up an email alert with that being one of the search criteria. Then be sure to include in the contract the price that you are going to list your home and submit with it a market analysis demonstrating that it is priced to sell quickly. That market analysis should include a spreadsheet of comparable homes sold in the last six months,

Your agent could even enter the home on the MLS as an “incoming” (not yet active) listing, complete with high quality photos, showing that you’re ready to “pull the trigger” immediately after your contract is accepted on the new home.

The contract to purchase your new home could have a closing date of 45 to 60 days, and if you have priced your current home correctly, you should get multiple offers and be under contract within, say, four days with a buyer who has agreed to match the closing date on your new home.

after which you would lose your earnest money if you fail to close on your purchase. That date should not be the day of closing but maybe a week earlier. If the contract to purchase your current home has the same date for that last opportunity for the buyer to terminate and get their earnest money back, you can have some peace of mind about everything working out well.

When I write a contingent contract, I like to add a provision that the seller can terminate if my buyer’s home is not under contract within, say, a week or 10 days after going under contract. That increases the likelihood of acceptance.

‘Not a single one of us walked out the same’ Survivors and loved ones gather to remember 13 killed in 1999 at Columbine

Twenty years since the day hell opened beneath Columbine High School. Since students streamed out of the south Jefferson County school, their hands over their heads, fleeing two classmates turned murderers.

Twenty years since families learned their loved ones had been taken. Since the community suffered a wound that may never completely heal.

On April 20, 20 years since the darkest day many will ever know, hundreds gathered in Clement Park, just around the corner from the school, to remember, and to share the pain and love that followed that day in 1999.

“Not all scars are visible on the skin,” Sean Graves, who was shot in the attack’s first moments, told the crowd. “On that day, there were 2,000 people inside… Not a single one of us walked out the same.”

But the mood in the park was not despair or misery, but hope and appreciation that after two decades,

happened long before their birth.

The pain may never fully subside, said Dawn Anna, whose daughter Lauren Townsend was killed in the attack.

“Sometimes I wonder how I’m going to get through this day,” Anna said. “Sometimes I wonder how I’m going to get through any day. But I think of Lauren, and I hear her say: ‘Do it for me. Do something wonderful for me today.’”

Toward the end of the ceremony, former Columbine Principal Frank DeAngelis read the names of those killed by the attackers.

Local hospitals strive for changes in approach to opioid use Lutheran Medical Center part of statewide effort to use more alternatives

to target the pain based on its cause and location. CO-ACEP identified pain pathways such as lower back pain, bone fractured, kidney stones, headaches and migraines and then laid out three or four alternatives physicians could try.

Some of these alternatives are fairly simple, such as using Tylenol and ibuprofen, or trigger point injections. A trigger point injection, Welch explained, could be injecting non-opioid medicine into the back of the head to help with a migraine and headache.

Other CHA-suggested alternatives include using Ketamine, often used for sedation, used in smaller doses to alleviate pain. Lidocaine can be used intravenously as well as topically for pain relief.

Why is it then that the medical community took so quickly and steadfastly to opioids when alternatives were already available?

It became a “knee-jerk reaction,” and using them became “almost habitual,” said Dr. Scott Miner, the medical director of Lutheran Medical Center’s ED in Wheat Ridge.

In June 2017 the Colorado Hospital Association (CHA) quietly launched the Colorado Opioid Safety Pilot, a six-month program aimed at reducing the amount of opioids hospitals prescribe to patients. Ten Emergency Departments across the state participated in the pilot, including free-standing emergency rooms, Level 1 emergency departments, and those in rural areas to make sure it worked in all different types of ED’s.

“And it did,” said Cara Welch, communications director for CHA. In just those six months, participating facilities decreased the number of opioids prescribed to patients on average by 36 percent, more than double CHA’s goal, and increased alternatives by 31 percent.

The emergency-department ambulance bays at the Lutheran Medical Center. The emergency department has been participating in a statewide effort to prescribe fewer opioids for pain treatment, in favor of alternatives without such an addiction risk.

MATTHEW VAN DEVENTER “So, a significant change in a fairly short time. A sixmonth pilot in health care is very short, but a real change for all of those sites,” continued Welch.

Many hospitals it seems had already been experimenting with giving patients opioid

alternatives, but there was no cohesion. CHA is bringing that to the state of Colorado by way of the Colorado chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, or CO-ACEP. The association put together specific order sets that could be made available

for certain ailments often treated with opioids and CHA is getting the word out.

Opioids act as a sort of blanket treatment, shutting off all of the body’s pain sensors, as opposed to treating the problem, explained Welch. The opioid alternatives are meant

Lutheran’s efforts After CHA’s initial success with the 2017 pilot program, they launched Colorado ALTO (alternatives to opioids) in Jan. 2018 and began working with hospitals and medical systems like SCL Health, which owns Lutheran, to train medical staff on opioid alternatives.

Lutheran was one of those facilities that had already been exploring alternatives, but it wasn’t until January of this year when the hospital started working with CHA that staff got organized in how they administer opioid alternatives as well as measure the outcome, according to Miner.

“So really what we’re trying to do is be fully dedicated to treating pain with all the tools we have available to us, but really trying to be purposeful about only using opiates when absolutely necessary and focusing on alternatives which are often times equally efficacious and safer at the same time,” said Miner.

“It’s really trying to address the opioid epidemic through the way that we practice to provide pain relief but also protect our patients from addiction.”

At a hospital with an emergency room that sees about 190 patients a day, around 70,000 a year, Lutheran is already seeing returns. Lutheran’s director of emergency services, Bill Needham said they’ve seen a drop in

While opioids can be an effective pain reducer, Needham said they come with so much “collateral damage” like addiction and the pain of those close to the patient.

In January the nurses, who administer medications prescribed by a physician, went through training with CHA to understand not just how to administer pain alternatives and understand their side effects, but also to be able to educate patients on the change in process as well, said Needham.

Jeffco officials, former Columbine principal reflect on Pais situation FBI warning of threatening individual leads to lockouts and school closures

After two days of disrupted schools, and a statewide hunt by law enforcement, Jefferson County Public Schools headed back to something closer to normal last Thursday.

Multiple Jeffco schools — including Columbine High School, all other schools in the Columbine area, and schools in the mountain areas of the county — were placed on lockout around noon on April 16. Lockouts involve limiting all access in or out of area schools, but allows teachers and students to maintain most schoolday activities inside. Those schools dismissed students at the normal time, albeit with additional security from the district and county sheriff ’s deputies.

The reason for the lockout, along with similar precautions taken by districts across the Denver metro area, was 18-year-old Florida resident Sol Pais. The FBI described Pais as being “extremely dangerous” and “infatuated” with the 1999 Columbine High School shooting that left 13 victims dead. Her presence in Colorado led to a statewide hunt for her.

of April 17 that Pais would be found, dead, near Echo Lake and the border of Clear Creek County and Jefferson County.

The Jeffco school district held a press conference April 17 with Sheriff Jeff Shrader, shortly after Pais’ body was found.

“Every report that we get as a threat, law enforcement works it, the school works it, and my team works it, and it all comes together — that trifecta of responding. My biggest fear is not being there,” John McDonald, director of safety and security for Jeffco Schools, said at the press conference. “That would be devastating to me. I struggle taking vacations. They pay me the medium-size bucks to protect the school district. I take great pride and ownership of that.”

District officials said that school and special activities, including Columbine anniversary events, would continue as normal for the rest of the week.

McDonald said that, sadly, Columbine in particular was no stranger to threats over the years, though he wished that was not the case.

“We are not a tourist attraction, and we are not a place for you to gain inspiration,” he said.

The incident opened up old wounds for Frank DeAngelis, who was the principal of Columbine High School at the time of the 1999 shooting.

DeAngelis also spoke at the press conference. He was at the school on April 16 when the lockout was announced, and said he felt the same anxiety as that day in 1999.

Every year, during the week of April 20, the day the 1999 Columbine shooting occurred, DeAngelis is at the school to offer support.

“When I started teaching back in 1979, and even when I was principal, the only drills we did were fire drills.

People ask why we have to do it? Our society has changed from 20 years ago. There’s been so many lessons learned.”

Jeffco Public Schools Superintendent Jason Glass also spoke a the district press conference. He has two children who are in kindergarten and first grade. He told his children that there was someone who wanted to harm students at school, and that he was keeping them home so tto be safe while the search for Pais continued. His children asked why Pais would do that, and what she was thinking, questions that he said are tough for adults to answer.

“I think when it comes to those questions that come up with children, we have to let them ask, and we have to be as honest as we can and know that neither the adults nor children fully understand what’s happening,” said Glass.

In a news release about the events of the last few days, the Jefferson County Education Association called for an end to school violence.

“We demand that this not be the norm of our community. We demand more mental health supports for our students and educators. It is time to have hard conversations about meaningful gun reform and demand that our legislators pass those laws,” the statement reads in part.

Colorado Community Media wins big at annual press convention STAFF REPORT

Colorado Community Media received 50 awards in the annual state press competition held April 10, including the prestigious public service award for a year-long series on the state of mental health in Douglas County.

The awards were spread among many of the 18 weeklies and two monthlies that CCM publishes in Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas, Elbert and Jefferson counties. They cover work done between Nov. 1, 2017 and Oct. 31, 2018.

“Being recognized by our peers is validation of the quality work of our staff,” Publisher Jerry Healey said.

“I am proud to be associated with the team here, and our readers can expect more good things to come.”

CCM’s papers won awards in all five weekly classifications, which were divided up based on size of circulation.

Class 1, for weeklies with a circulation of up to 1,000, was the smallest, and Class 5, for weeklies with a circulation greater than 7,000, was the largest.

Monthlies are in a separate class.

Among Class 2 weeklies, journalist Christy Steadman received first place for an in-depth look at gender in engineering fields and the top public service award for a story on a troublesome intersection in Golden. Steadman, with colleagues Shanna Fortier, Clarke Reader and editor Glenn Wallace also received first place for their ongoing series, “Homeless in Jeffco,” which explored the challenges facing

Puckett took top honors in public service and series for their “Time to Talk” project, which explored all facets of mental health in Douglas County. First-place awards also were given to DeWind and Gibbs for education, news and health enterprise stories, respectively, that looked at the effects of technology and social media on young people’s emotional intelligence, the growing mental health crisis in jails, and how addiction and mental health are connected.

In the Class 3 weekly category, journalist Ellis Arnold won first place for best series for “No Place to Call Home,” which looked at how Englewood is facing challenges of an increasing homeless population, and first in best health enterprise for a story on the opioid epidemic.

Among Class 1 weeklies, journalist David Gilbert won first place in the series, news story and sustained coverage categories for his exploration of the life and death of a Kiowa man and the complicated legal case of the man arrested in connection with his murder.

Fortier received first-place honors for her photography portfolio among Class 5 weeklies.

Kailyn Lamb, editor for the Denver monthlies Washington Park Profile and Life on Capitol Hill, won first place in sports column writing along with second-place honors for environmental and business reporting.

Karen Earhart, Erin Franks, Tina Meltzer and Lisa Allison won first place for Best Classified Pages or Sections, in addition to several other advertising awards.

In all, CCM garnered 23 first-place and 27 second-place awards in categories that also included headline, design and editorial writing; and business, photography, feature, deadline, environmental, agricultural and sports reporting.

You can’t write about the human condition and be apolitical

A

pril is National Poetry Month. As a poet myself, I believe that poetry can be accessible, can speak with and for many voices, and can – and does – make a difference for the world we live in.

Many of us probably have a favorite poem or two, perhaps even from our childhood days. Robert Louis Stevenson’s book, A Child’s Garden of Verses, is a treasure trove of memories. I learned Christina Rosetti’s poem “Who has seen the wind?” early in life, which I recall on almost any Colorado Day: “Who has seen the wind? / Neither you nor I: / But when the trees bow down their heads / The wind is passing by.”

I also revel in work that goes back centuries – John Donne from the

early 1600s, William Blake – “Tyger Tyger, burning bright / in the forests of the night” – from the late 1700s, as well as in more contemporary writing, such as that of Wisława Szymborska In fact, it was probably in discovering Szymborska, who Andrea Doray received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1996, that I truly entered a world of activist poetry.

Szymborska’s themes of struggle and resistance stem from her years in Poland during World War II. In 1865, Walt Whitman published poems of his own experiences in

the Civil War, such as “Beat! Beat!

Drums!” One poem that haunts me is Sarah Cleghorn’s “The Golf Links” from the 1910s: “The golf links lie so near the mill / that almost every day / the laboring children can look out / and see the men at play.”

In Maya Angelou’s 1983 poem, “[I Know Why the] Caged Bird [Sings],” the poet writes of a caged bird that “… can seldom see through his bars of rage …” but that “…sings of freedom.”

Nikki Giovanni wrote about “Rosa Parks” in 2002, and Emmy Perez wrote in 2016 “Not One More Refugee Death.”

Consider the words on Bob Dylan, poet of the 1960s (and, yes, a musician), also awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016, “for having created new poetic expressions within the

great American song tradition.”

And what about the song “Four Dead in Ohio” by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in reaction to the Kent State shootings of May 4, 1970? Or the unforgettable (if you’re in my generation) “Blowin’ in the Wind,” famously performed by Peter, Paul and Mary, and also written by Bob Dylan?

Although some of today’s poetry (and especially lyrics) does refer to – or actually incite – violence, that’s not the peaceful activism of which I write here.

The world lost a peaceful activist poet in the last year when poet Sam Hamill died, who had organized the movement, Poets Against the War, in protest of the Iraq war.

Three conspiracies against geezers Editor’s Note: This is the sixth column in a geezer-related series.

A

few years ago I retired. I wondered, “What will I do all day?”

The universe sent me guidance: “As a geezer, you have younger people conspiring against you. You are to publicize three conspiracy theories by the end of the week. Publish or perish!” I took this guidance seriously.

Here’s my three theories: 1. Dangerous packaging conspiracy.

Recently I bought a three pack of small candles. I tried prying the plastic covering off. No luck. I attempted to stick a pair of scissors into the plastic, but still no go. Then I got a sharp pointy knife and stabbed the plastic with all my might. The only puncture was my finger drawing a stream of blood. I shouted, four-letter words, and said, “This is a conspiracy!”

“Hey you packaging design team of punks. You are sadists.” I wrote a letter of complaint and got back this note. “Dear Mary, This plastic is so tough! We shot it with a pistol and it is bulletproof. See if you old fogies

can open this! It used to be childproof but now it’s adult-proof.

Ha, ha, ha!”

2. Cell phone conspiracy: I used to have a fluorescent green cover my phone but when I was forced to upgrade (a conspiracy to sell more phones) the new Mary Stobie one’s cover came in reddish black. The bright green cover no longer fit. (conspiracy to get me to buy more stuff) My new “upgrade” no longer stood out in the blackness of my purse or in the dark interior of my car, so I lost many phones.

The leader of the phone design team says, “Let’s make sure geezers have to buy new phones every few months.

It’s not only dark, it’s also thin and slippery. Let’s design it to slip between couch cushions and car seats. We’ve put a thin layer of ski wax on these new phones. If one is dropped on a ski slope it will race down the mountain

3. Vehicle conspiracy to confuse geezers.

I like to give a nickname to my cars. My new one is a sedan. At least two people made up the words to appear next to the speedometer.

The car communication techies said “How can we make this car more confusing for geezers?” Another computer geek said: “We’ll use different kinds of language — bossy statements and kind statements in the same car. The more we confuse geezers trying to nickname their cars the better.”

When I park my car, it has a commanding personality like the Godfather Vito Corleone. “Turn off your lights! (you dummy — or I’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse. Don’t even leave them on for a second, or I’ll stand by your door with a gun.”

Another engineer wrote, “Key not detected in the vehicle.” This is more polite like Paddington Bear. It’s giving me the option of sitting in my car for hours without going anywhere.

I can get out of the car and find my keys or not.

To nickname my car has been a challenge: Vito Corleone or Paddington Bear? Vito Paddy, Paddy-Vito, or Boss-Paddy?

Bessie E. Kellogg Boyd, 100, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2019, at her home at Fairwind’s- Sandcreek Assisted Living in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Bessie was born on September 16, 1918, in Watertown, SD, to Clarence and Bessie Kellogg. She and her 4 siblings grew up and attended schools in South Dakota. She continued her education in Brookings, SD, working toward earning a teaching certificate, which required only one year to teach in the rural schools. However, her father encouraged her to attend school one more year so she could teach in the town schools. On May 14, 1944, Bessie married Ronald C. Boyd. They were loving partners for 63 years and raised four children:Douglas Boyd (Sheryl) Portland, OR, Stuart Boyd (Irene) Los Angeles, CA, Lyndell Bradshaw (Craig) Idaho Falls, ID, and Ronald Boyd (Laurene) Arvada, CO. Bessie and Ron lived in many places during their years together, including several places in SD, Massena, NY, Idaho Falls, ID, Leadville, CO, and Lakewood, CO. Everywhere they lived Bessie was a dedicated Elementary school teacher.

She taught for over 30 years in many schools including Bel Air Elementary in Idaho Falls and Mitchell Elementary in Golden, CO. Bessie returned to Idaho Falls, ID in 2016 to be closer to

her daughter, Lyndell. Bessie and Ron enjoyed traveling with family and friends. They traveled to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, and many different places in the US. After Bessie retired, she enjoyed being a volunteer tour guide at the Denver State Capital Building.

She made many friends and loved sharing her knowledge of Colorado. Bessie enjoyed playing tennis, reading books, playing Yahtzee or bridge. She was always ready for a good game of bridge or chatting with her friends over a cup of hot coffee. A highlight for Bessie was the celebration her family held for her 100th birthday in September 2018 in Idaho Falls. It astonished her that she had lived “to be that old” in such excellent health.

Her family and many friends spent the day celebrating her amazing long life. Bessie’s husband, parents, and siblings preceded her in death. She is survived and will be missed by her four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27th at Applewood Valley United Methodist Church, 2035 Ellis St. Golden, CO. Burial will be in Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to a charity of your choice or a local elementary school library.

On May 4 and 5, Civic Center Park in downtown Denver turns into a mini Mexico for the annual Cinco de Mayo Festival. The twoday event celebrates the country’s culture and history.

argaritas. Sombreros. Cervezas. Tequila.

Across cities and college campuses in the United States, these tend to be the staples of Cinco de Mayo. Popular Mexican American restaurants and rooftop bars in the Denver metro area typically overflow on this party holiday.

This year Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May, falls on a Sunday. Aside from the fun it brings, the holiday is rich with history, a celebration of triumph and culture.

For Andrea Barela — who heads the largest two-day Cinco de Mayo celebration in the state, held May 4 and 5 this year — it’s a weekend for cultures to blend. In today’s political climate, she explains, that can otherwise be a challenge.

“With the turmoil and racism our country is experiencing, this is the

weekend we forget all of that and come together as a community to celebrate,” said Barela, the president of NEWSED Community Development, which promotes economic success of underserved populations in the Denver metro area. “These are cultural events, they are significant and they should be maintained.”

History Cinco de Mayo — sometimes mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day — is celebrated by a population of residents in the Mexican state of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City.

The day honors May 5, 1862, when the Mexican Army defeated European invaders at the Battle of Puebla. The triumph was unexpected — Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza led the outnumbered and poorly supplied Mexicans, according to the History Channel. Nonetheless they triumphed and maintained their land.

Cinco de Mayo traditions in Puebla include military parades, recreations of the battle and other festive events.

Stop by the Cinco De Mayo Festival at Civic Center Park, 101 W. 14th Ave, from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. May 4 and 5. A parade starts at 11 a.m. May 4, followed by Chihuahua races at 2 p.m. On May 5, a taco eating contest begins at 2 p.m.

Both days feature music, food, rides and games.

On May 5, a mariachi band will play in the food court from noon to 1 p.m.

COMING That makes it easy to see why ATTRACTIONS Denver International Airport elected to celebrate the street in its latest exhibit, Colfax Avenue: The Longest Continuous Street in the USA. “Sometimes these exhibits are historic, other Clarke Reader times scientific or cultural. But it was a lot of fun to feature something we’re kind of well known for,” said Jennifer Garner, exhibits curator at the airport.

“Sometimes people think about all the crazy stuff that goes with Colfax, and they don’t realize the really rich history there and what’s happening now.”

The exhibit will be on display through June, located on Ansbacher Hall in the Jeppesen Terminal, Level 6 North, before A Bridge Security.

To put the exhibit together, Garner worked with a variety of organizations, including the 40 West Arts District, The Colfax Museum, the Denver Film Society and Historic Denver.

These organizations donated modern and historic artifacts to help give a glimpse of Colfax’s story.

“We all know Colfax has its own legend and lore, so we were very selective about the artifacts we donated for inclusion,” said Bill Marino, 40 West board chair of and executive director for the Lakewood West Colfax Business Improvement District. “We included a hubcap that has been turned into a piece of art, magazines that tell our story, sculptures from local artists and more.”

For Garner, the best part about organizing the exhibit was the lesserknown facts she learned about the exhibit. For example, there used to be many country-western bars on East Colfax, so many that it was known as the Nashville of the West.

“I recommend visitors pay attention to all the details included in the exhibit,” said Alex Renteria, public information officer at the airport. “It’s like coming home for people returning to Denver, and it’s a chance to experience our home’s history for everyone else.”

The Arvada Center for Arts and Humanities begins its 2019-20 theatre season in the Main Stage Theatre with the regional premiere of “Bright Star” — a dramatic story of love, loss and regret set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in the 1940s.

Breaking outside of his usual comedic style, Steve Martin, along with Edie Brickell, wrote the story, book and music for this sentimental story told through the sounds of American bluegrass.

The season continues in the Black Box Theatre with a production of “Plaza Suite,” by Neil Simon. Taking place in one suite of the Plaza Hotel in New York, three separate couples navigate the tensions of their romantic lives. Performed in three acts, this production will feature the same actors in each story, creating a repertory theatre in miniature.

The holiday season heralds the return of a classic to the Arvada Center: “A Christmas Carol - The Musical.” With music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, the classic Dickens tale comes to life with music and dance.

For the fourth year, the Black Box Repertory Company will perform three plays in repertory beginning in 2020.

The repertory season kicks off with a regional premiere adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express.” This new version of the classic murder mystery by Ken Ludwig promises a fun, fast-paced thrill ride. The second play to be performed in repertory is an innovative reframing of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Created with a company of eight actors, the tale comes to life with the help of music, magic and a little mayhem.

The repertory company ends its run with “Small Mouth Sounds,” by Bess Wohl. Another regional premiere, the play takes place in a yoga retreat in which the participants have taken a vow of silence.

Jeffco students speak in threat aftermath

As the threat of violence kept students across Colorado from attending school on April 17, Colorado Community Media reached out to students in Jefferson County, ground zero for one of the most infamous of school shootings. Here are some of their thoughts and feelings about school security on on the 20th anniversary of the Columbine school shooting.

“You just kind of grow up with it” Charles Wiebeck, a junior at Arvada West High School, says it was through other students he knows at Evergreen High School that he first heard about the school lockouts on April 16. Later in the day he learned more about the woman behind the threats — identified by law enforcement as 18-year-old Sol Pais — and her motivations.

“It’s really sad that people take too much of a deep look at the original Columbine shooting, and idolize Eric and Dylan,” said Wiebeck. “It’s like a shadow that will stick with the state forever.”

Wiebeck, like every public school student of his generation, has spent his whole childhood in the shadow of Columbine. He says school security features are just a way of life, as are live shooter drills.

On one hand, Wiebeck says most of his classmates have become desensitized to school shootings, and the word Columbine used almost as a joke. Even recent shootings do not seem to make as big an impact as they might have.

Columbine and Golden have a lot of similarities with their school spirit and sense of community, Babitz said. She serves as the Golden High School Student Body President and noted that she sees Columbine students regularly at student council events, as well as sporting events when the two schools play each other.

Babitz believes her fellow students at Golden likely used April 17 as a day to reflect on why all the schools closed that day.

People “took it a lot harder than when school is cancelled for a snow day,” Babitz said. Even though some academics and school-related activities will have to be re-scheduled, “it’s better for people to feel safe than be at school worrying the whole time.”

HISTORY

Cinco De Mayo — or the fifth of May — is an annual celebration honoring the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Traditions in the state of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City, include military parades, recreations of the battle and other festive events.

Cinco De Mayo is not a federal holiday, so for many Mexicans it’s just like any other day.

But because it isn’t a federal holiday, Cinco de Mayo is just like any other day for many Mexicans.

“Puebla is actually the only place in Mexico that celebrates this day,” said Highlands Ranch resident Lola Wiarco Dweck, who is of Mexican heritage, adding, “and in the U.S., it’s a holiday that’s observed more by Mexican-Americans and Americans than Mexicans.”

Dweck was raised in California.

Growing up, her family didn’t celebrate the holiday but she did perform ballet folklórico at some Cinco de Mayo festivals in Los Angeles, she said.

Today Dweck, a professional chef, celebrates by making foods that commemorate the colors of the Mexican flag: red, white and green, and cooking mole poblano, one of Puebla’s best-known dishes.

Using the arts to explore the idea of a homeland There’s been a lot of heated debate recently about borders and what it means to belong to one country or another. The Colorado History Center, in collaboration with the Northern Río Grande National Heritage Area, offers a unique artistic perspective with its new pop-up exhibit, “Without Borders.”

The exhibit features artists from southern Colorado, northern New Mexico and beyond who, according to information from the museum, “explore the concept of Borderlands and what homelands are today.”

“It really started as a street event made to highlight the Santa Fe corridor and the west Denver neighborhood, to boost economic development,” Barela said. “It became very popular very quickly.”

It became so popular that it outgrew its original location and moved to Civic Center Park, near the Colorado Capitol in downtown Denver. One of the largest in the nation, Denver’s Cinco de Mayo festival attracts about 400,000 people a year, depending on the weather.

The two-day extravaganza features three stages — one with bands from Mexico, one with local bands and one featuring dancers — more than 200 vendors, a parade, Chihuahua races, kids’ activities, folklórico dancers and a low-rider car show — what Barela calls a Chicano tradition.

“It’s so cultural,” Barela said of the festival, “that it’s like visiting Mexico in the city of Denver for a weekend.”

Clarke’s Concert of the Week — The 1975 at Red Rocks England’s The 1975 are a gleefully divisive pop-rock band in an age when so many work hard to offend nobody. Fronted by Matt Healy, the group has taken a tongue-in-cheek approach to everything from social media and superstardom to contemporary romance and modernity (which “has failed us”).

Over the course of their three albums, the group has become one of my favorite modern artists, especially because of the ‘80s pop and new wave sonicscapes they pair with their razor-sharp lyrics. And Healy is one of the best frontmen working in music these days.

Colorado Refugee English as a Second Language Program: Teaches English to recently arrived refugees, who have fled war or persecution in their home country.

In Colorado, refugees are from Afghanistan, Burma, Bhutan, Somalia, Iraq, Eritrea and D.R. Congo, among others.

Refugees live throughout Denver, but the largest concentrations are in Thornton, near 88th Avenue and Washington Street, and in east Denver/Aurora, near Colfax Avenue and Yosemite Street.

Other details: Tutors do not need to speak the student’s language. Most participants are homebound women and small children, adults who are disabled, and senior citizens. Many are not literate in their first language, and remain isolated from American culture.

Who do you want with you when you die? Where do you want to be? At home? In a hospital? Do you want hospice involved? Would you want CPR? What would you want done if you had dementia and could no longer feed yourself ? When is a good time to think about palliative care? These are all choices you need to make – or someone else will make them for you!

The Advance Directive contains a Living Will, where you choose what life prolonging efforts and procedures you would want, and those you would not want, when you come to the end of your life.

For instance – despite what you may have seen on TV – did you know that when CPR is performed, 49 percent of people die during the effort? That another 41 percent die before they can go home? And, of the 10 percent who do go to a care center or home, almost all have reduced mental capacity because if CPR is not started within 6 minutes of the heart’s stopping, the brain begins to die, and does not recover from the lack of oxygen.

Lakewood unable to end Columbine’s winning streak in 5A Jeffco

LAKEWOOD — Columbine’s girls soccer team didn’t mind having a game not decided by a single goal Monday, April 15.

The Rebels — No. 6 in the latest CHSAANow.com Class 5A girls soccer rankings — cruised to an 8-1 victory over Lakewood.

“This game really helped us find our touches and work well together to get a win out of it,” Columbine senior Libby Spangler said after the biggest margin of victory for the Rebels this season with the 7-goal victory at Lakewood Memorial Field.

Columbine racked up a 7-0 lead at halftime. Peyton Weber, Riley Kaali-Nagy, Evelyn Hammer, Annabelle Young and Spangler each had a goal for the Rebels before halftime. Senior Tessa Barton tacked on a pair of goals to add to her team-leading 12 goals on the season for Columbine (6-3-1, 3-0 in 5A Jeffco League).

“We got to play some good soccer,” Columbine coach Brian Todd said after the win. “We scored some good goals and got everyone in the game. That was good.”

Columbine has been locked in close battles in almost every game this season. The Rebels have had seven games

decided by a single goal, along with four overtime games including a tie last week against Rocky Mountain.

The Rebels’ three losses have come against No. 1 Arapahoe, No. 2 Grandview and No. 3 Regis Jesuit.

“We came out and realized we are done with overtime games,” Barton said after the win against Lakewood.

The Rebels are alone atop the conference having Ralston Valley (4-2-1, 1-0-1) and Chatfield (9-1-1, 4-0-1) tie in their conference opener.

Columbine is trying to win a sixth straight 5A Jeffco League title and have won 20 straight conference games after Monday’s win. The streak dates back to the 2016 season.

“We are playing a great schedule,” Todd said. “I’m proud of our girls so far through that. We’ve played some really good opponents. I think we are slowly getting to where we need to be.”

Lakewood (3-8, 1-3) did prevent the shutout loss against Columbine thanks to a goal in the 68th minute by sophomore Myria Garcia.

Pomona comes up just short on the baseball diamond

LAKEWOOD — Dakota Ridge baseball has found a flair for the dramatics earlier during Class 5A Jeffco League play.

In less than 48 hours, the Eagles (8-7, 2-0 in 5A Jeffco) scored in the final inning twice to pull off back-toback conference victories. The latest escape act came Saturday, April 20, at Keli McGregor Field at All Star Park in a wild 12-10 win over Pomona (3-11, 0-2).

“Hopefully we don’t have any more of these during league, but if we do we know what to do to get the win,” said Dakota Ridge senior Ben Biffinger.

Dakota Ridge got an RBI single by Biffinger in the top of the seventh inning to break at 10-10 tie. Pomona intentionally walked senior Ryan Stohr

after senior Jake Sansburn doubled with one out in the seventh.

“That is something we’ve talked about with Ben all year long,” Dakota Ridge coach Jeff Legault said of Pomona giving the free pass to Stohr to face Biffinger. “It’s going to happen in the future. They are going to come after (Biffinger) and he has to be ready to swing it.”

Biffinger finished 2-for-3 from the plate with two walks and a pair of runs scored.

“I feel like when they walk some intentionally that it’s my job to show them that they should have intentionally walked me,” Biffinger said. “I need to prove them wrong and I did that today.”

A fly ball to right field by junior Mason Sauter scored another running in the seventh to give Dakota Ridge an insurance run heading to the final half of the seventh with a

two-run advantage.

Still, things got interesting when Pomona loaded the bases with one out and sophomore Brady Ritzman coming to the plate in the seventh.

Ritzman belted a grand slam during the Panthers’ seven-run sixth inning, but the sophomore grounded out in a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.

“I think you have to give a lot of credit to Dakota,” Pomona coach EJ Mapps said. “After what we did in the sixth, a lot of high school teams would really let that affect them. Dakota Ridge isn’t like that. That’s due to Jeff and their other coaches.”

Dakota Ridge junior Jacob Diaz picked up the victory after taking the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning and getting the final five outs of the Eagles.

Wheat Ridge High School’s STEM engineering program operates more like a business than a class. Walk to the lower level of the high school, and you’ll find three classrooms dedicated to the program — a computer lab, a manufacturing lab and a conference room. Students aren’t in those rooms doing homework, or writing papers — they’re designing some of the nation’s best hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Wheat Ridge High School’s STEM engineering program competed in the Shell Eco-Marathon, a challenge to see which team can create the most efficient car that runs on hydrogen, in Sonoma, California earlier this month against high schools and universities from North America and South America. The school came to the challenge with two hydrogen fuel cell vehicles — an urban concept vehicle complete with blinkers, headlights, windshield wipers and turn signals, as well as a prototype vehicle designed for efficiency. The prototype did well, passing all of its engineering inspections, and finish-

The STEM aspect of the program is vital, but there’s more to it. Students were responsible for reaching out to companies for sponsorship, and a social media team operates the pro-

gram’s Facebook.

“This class functions like a company would. We have our bosses who we go to and report, but we are all selfmotivated,” said Ali Helton, a junior who is part of the program. “It’s all student driven. It’s our motivation, not the teachers. It’s the talking to companies, learning how to communicate with our community, things

that happen in the outside world.

This class prepares us for that.”

One of those “bosses” who Helton referred to is Charles Sprague, the STEM and engineering-Shell instructor. Sprague founded the program five years ago, and he’s watched it grow from 16 to over 100 students.

“There’s an awful lot of the higher end soft skills that are needed in the real world to be successful. (Students) get to do that all down here, and they’ve done a good job,” said Sprague.

Wheat Ridge High School has taken home first place awards from the Shell Eco-Marathon twice in the past.

“When you’re in a core class, you do the homework, you hand it in, then you do the test. It’s a cycle,” said Caleb Coyne, a senior in the program.

“When you take STEM, it’s that matter of meeting deadlines, and it’s trial and error. This class has built me to be more prepared for the future.”

With less outgo comes a sigh of relief, as retirees may be able to delay taking social security until age 70, pay off high interest credit card debt, allow time for the retirement portfolio to grow, and find a myriad of other

uses for tax-free proceeds of a reverse mortgage.

by HUD have reduced the amount of mortgage insurance paid annually from 1.25% to .5%.
