Charter, private schools navigate weeks of online learning Schools maintain their individuality, community despite change in plans

Up until March 2020, Golden-based charter school Golden View Classical Academy relied on a mostly analog approach to education, said principal Robert Garrow.

And when the school decided to transition to remote learning and instruction in response to the spread of COVID-19, that meant taking everything online for the first time.

In a matter of days, the school set up email accounts for every student, set up Google Classroom accounts for every teacher and ensured all students had devices to use at home, with some families donating computers to the cause.

“To move online was a very steep move, and we really turned it around in a weekend,” Garrow said.

As opposed to many of its neighbors, the academy, established through the Barney Charter School Initiative, is not a neighborhood school in a larger school district. While the school has been able to look to nearby districts’ approach to remote learning, the vast majority of the process has fallen on the school’s shoulders.

Other area charter and private schools have found themselves in a similar situation, with each finding a way to tackle the turnaround and see their families through the end of the school year.

At Faith Christian Academy in Arvada, the adaptation has been a process of expanding what the school already has in place. Every year, the private school oversees at least one day of remote learning through which students go online to complete a day of school from home. The school uses the same method whenever it has to make up a snow day or cancellation, said Superintendent Andrew Hasz, and its freedom to do so as a private school has made Faith slightly more prepared to handle the current situation.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF MICAH GILBREATH “It’s a lot different for one day versus weeks and months,” he said, however, “we’re coming together and we’ve set up a good system.”

Meredith Meyering, who has a middle schooler and a high schooler at Faith, said the prior online experience made the transition easier for her family.

“They would agree they learn better listening in class, but content-wise, they do feel like they’re covering the same amount they would be,” she said. “And the teachers have been very merciful as we’re figuring things out.”

Additionally, the staff has worked to address the most common issues students and parents are facing.

For families in need of technical help, the school’s technical support team has been making house calls to help resolve issues. For subjects that are particularly difficult for students to understand on their own, like math, Meyering’s daughter’s teacher has been available by text message or video chat to answer questions. For students who are missing the social aspect of school, each class holds a weekly video chat over Zoom to allow students to talk to one another.

“The kids can see how much work the teachers are putting into all of this,” Meyering said. “I think they feel as part of the school as they can as far away as they are.”

As the school continues to adjust

its approach based on families’ needs, “we do keep in contact with Jeffco Schools, because everybody’s going through the same things,” Hasz said.

“And we have a lot of talks with other Christian schools so we can all learn from each other.”

Other schools, like Lincoln Academy in Arvada — a charter authorized

by Jeffco Public Schools — have been following the district’s lead more closely as they navigate these remote learning weeks.

“The district gave us a really good framework and we have made it work for our community,” said principal Janelle Johnson. “They’ve done a fabulous job and I know if there’s something we needed, we could reach out and ask.”

At the same time, Johnson and her staff have had the ability to be flexible to help families, whether that means extending attendance deadlines or changing assignment due dates. She also highlighted the school’s many resources available for struggling families, including resources for families in need of food and mental health resources,all listed on the school’s webpage.

As the weeks go on, teachers have also become more committed to posting videos and holding video chats, she said.

Parents like Micah Gilbreath, who has sons in first and fifth grade at Lincoln, note that staff has also worked to ensure families feel close together — even though, because the charter is not a neighborhood school, families geographically may be far apart.

“Right now, my boys are doing PE through a Facebook Live chat, and our art teacher has done the same thing.

It’s fun and involved,” she said. “The teachers have just been a lifeline for our kids to know they’re safe. This will be something that sticks with our families and I think it’s going to be for the greater good, in time.”

Many charters and private schools like Faith, Golden View Classical and Lincoln have announced that remote learning will continue for the rest of the school year.

Looking to the coming weeks, the schools are hopeful that they will be able to maintain the unique aspects that draw students to their schools in the first place.

“Classical education really prioritizes conversations, so anything that detracts from that really makes it more difficult,” Garrow said, “but we’re happy to do the best we can, and I think we’re doing well.”

Jeffco high school graduations postponed until August STAFF REPORT

With May graduation ceremonies canceled because of the pandemic, Jeffco high schools are organizing to hold graduations in August instead.

An April 10 announcement from the school district outlined an overall plan for each school to reschedule graduation while also creating a graduation acknowledgment to be shared with their communities at the end of May. “This acknowledgment will take a form determined by each individual school in collaboration with their seniors and staff,” the district announcement said.

The May ceremonies will be postponed to one of four dates, August 7, 8, 14 and 15, assuming that social distancing guidelines and restrictions have been lifted by then. Jeffco may schedule additional dates to accommodate its large number of schools if necessary.

Charter schools also may choose to reschedule or change their graduations and will share this information with their school communities.

If a stay-at-home order is in place on the planned August dates, the high schools will postpone their ceremonies for later dates, the announcement said.

“Specific dates, times and locations

for each school are still being determined,” it said. “Information will be shared with families and graduating seniors as soon as it is known,” with the district planning to finalize details

by April 17 and communicate plans shortly after.

“We know this news is disappointing for our families with graduates, as well as for our high school teachers and staff, and most especially for our graduating seniors,” the announcement said. “We are proud of each of these wonderful students and are committed to recognizing their achievements as we are able in these unusual circumstances.”

The Rule Against Showings & Open Houses Shouldn’t Hamper Your Home-Buying...

… that is, if the listing agent does what Golden Real Estate has done for over 13 years — create a narrated walk-through video of each listing.

Our narrated video tours are just like a showing. They are live action videos which start in front of the house (just like a real showing) and then go through the house and into the back yard, talking all the time.

Check out the video tours for each of the two listings featured on this page to see what I mean. They really are like an in-person showing with the listing agent. For example, the video camera points down to the floor and up to the ceiling as I describe the hardwood floor or the sun tunnels which bring natural light into the home’s interior.

But, you say, you’re not going to buy a home that you can’t see in person.

Right? That is still true, because the rules allow for inspection once the home is under contract. Your visit (with an agent) the next day constitutes an inspection. That’s before you even have to deliver your earnest money check.

I’m not being cute or bending the rules. The inspection provision in the standard contract to buy and sell a home makes no mention of having to hire an inspector or how many inspection visits you are entitled to prior to the inspection objection deadline.

So, let’s say you look at the video tour of the patio home below or the ranch-

style luxury home at right. I guarantee you’ll have a pretty good sense of the home from viewing the video. You’ll know the flow from kitchen to dining room, to family room, to back yard, etc., because you are being walked through the home.

It is not a slideshow of different rooms, which gives no indication of flow from one to the other.

Let’s say you call me or your agent to submit a contract. The contract has a 7- to 10-day inspection period. You go under contract and schedule your personal inspection with your agent (or me, if unrepresented) the next day, before delivering your earnest money check. You can terminate immediately if you have buyer’s remorse, and go back to looking at other houses.

If you don’t terminate, you still have a week to hire a professional inspector and submit a detailed inspection objection.

What if you’re a buyer, and there’s no such video for a house that interests you? You’ve got three choices here.

One, your agent (me, for example) could request a narrated video from the listing agent. Second, I could preview the home for you since no mention is made of banning previews, and shoot my own roughcut video tour of the home, post it as an “unlisted” video on YouTube and send you the link. Or, third and perhaps best, we could use Facetime, Zoom, or another app to have you see what I’m seeing as I walk you through the house.

ient not to have an in-person showing of a listed home, there are work-arounds that can make it possible to get under contract and confirm your interest in the property before you are fully committed to it or put down any earnest money.

The only issue that is going to reduce your ability to buy a home under the current situation is if your continued

employment is in doubt. If you have to finance your purchase with a mortgage, just know that the lender will verify your employment immediately prior to closing and could refuse to fund the closing.

Then you not only lose out on your home purchase, but you will likely forfeit your earnest money deposit, since the last deadline to terminate has passed.

Each week I have been checking the MLS to see how many homes are being listed and how many are going under contract as the Covid-19 stay-at-home order remains in place.

For the weeks of March 22nd and March 29th, the market showed surprising resilience, with statistics comparable to prior years. What about last week?

During the 7-day period from Sunday April 5th to Saturday April 11th, a total of 819 homes were entered on Denver’s MLS, REcolorado, within 25 miles of downtown Denver. Of those, 22 had already been sold privately, so there were only 797 new active listings. Of those, 133 were already under contract

by Saturday. A total of 25 were immediately withdrawn or expired, many of

them likely because of the no-showings rule, which was clarified on Monday.

This is a huge drop from the same 7day period in 2019, when there were 1,631 new active listings, 227 of which had gone under contract by the end of the same 7-day period.

In 2018, the numbers were similar, with 1,588 new active listings, 579 of which went under contract within the same 7-day period. (Wow!) In 2017, the numbers were also similar, with 1,633 new active listings, 663 of which were under contract by the end of the same 7-day period. The numbers were equally impressive in 2016.

Bottom line? We are finally seeing about a 50% decline in new listings, but many of them are still selling quickly.

COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on 40 West Arts District Artists talk about life in Lakewood during COVID-19 era

Since bringing the Landt Creative Space art studio to the 40 West Arts District in Lakewood nearly two years ago, Tabetha Landt has spent the first Friday of every single month at her studio.

The 40 West Arts District has routinely hosted First Friday events on the first Friday of every month where all of the art district’s galleries and creative businesses would open to the public. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 40 West Arts District was empty as can be on April 3.

“I kept looking at the clock and was thinking `Wow, there should be hundreds of people coming through (Landt Creative Space) right now’. But we are getting used to the quiet,” said Landt.

Although an in-person event didn’t happen, the 40 West Arts District got creative and offered a virtual First Friday event April 3. The art district provided a video walk-through of its galleries and shared artist stories and art.

Residents could chime in on the event through the 40 West Arts District’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.

Aside from changing the dynamics of the art district’s First Friday event, COVID-19 has impacted artists throguhout the 40 West Arts District in many ways.

Art classes moved online A large source of income for Landt’s studio comes from art classes that she teaches four times a week. Landt typically teaches acrylics and some oil painting classes, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she has moved all of her classes online.

“I made that decision before the stay-at-home order,” said Landt. Colorado has been under a stay-at-home order since March 26. That order is scheduled to last through April 26.

“It felt weird having people come in.

I wanted to play it safe and try (her classes) out on the internet,” she said.

Landt is hosting her classes through the online video communications platform Zoom, and she says she has lowered her prices down from $38 a class to $25. So far, her students have gotten to paint mermaids, rowboats, crows and more.

“I can’t walk around and look at (student paintings) and help them that way, but when they need help, they hold their work up to the screen so I can see it. It has really worked well, actually,” said Landt. “People seem happy to meet face to face still, but it has been an adjustment.”

First Fridays provide another source of income for Landt and give her the opportunity to display and sell her work to the community. Since an in-person event wasn’t feasible at the beginning of April, Landt participated

The two wore bandannas to cover their faces. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has urged Coloradans to wear face coverings to stop the spread of COVID-19.

To provide short-term help for creative and small businesses in the West Colfax corridor, the Lakewood-West Colfax Business Improvement District launched a hyper-local fund last month.

She said she believes that if people can, they should still work to support small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re all in this together. If people want to come to classes and have another resource to work through the stress, I am there for them,” Landt said.

Canceled art shows and rent struggles For the past six months, Christy Seving, an artist at NEXT Gallery at the 40 West Arts District, was working on an art show that was scheduled to debut on April 3 at the gallery called “Asking a Shadow to Dance.”

She collaborated with local poets and created paintings to pair along with poems. But COVID-19 changed everything, and for now, her show is postponed.

“It was a little heartbreaking, but when I was able to realize it was not going to happen, I let it go and looked around and saw the huge things people are facing,” said Seving, who temporarily lost her day job as a hairstylist.

“People are struggling to eat and pay their rent and have their basic needs

met. Who would’ve ever guessed something like this would’ve happened,” she said.

Other artists in the 40 West Arts District know the pain of working on art for the public to only have it be temporarily suspended like Carrie MaKenna, co-owner of the Arts Carrie MaKenna Studio & Gallery in the district.

MaKenna had artwork on display at various places in the metro area, including at her gallery, the 40 West Arts Gallery, Colorado Mills Mall and D’art Gallery in Denver. But due to the pandemic, none of those locations are open.

“When we have the work planned for an exhibit, we have a spent a year on it, and a lot of exhibit schedules are out for two years in the future. If you lose an exhibit time, there isn’t a way to make it up,” said MaKenna. “As you’re going on, you have to get back in line.”

won’t be able to stay in Lakewood as she has bills to pay for her business, including rent, utilities and internet.

“When it comes down to a crisis like this when people are losing jobs and don’t have money for their own rents or mortgages, the last thing they will do is buy art. There is going to be an impact on art districts throughout the Denver metro area,” said MaKenna.

“It would be a huge blow to the 40 West Arts District if the galleries and artists can’t stay here.”

NEXT Gallery is also concerned about staying put in the district, according to Josh Davy, the art gallery’s director. The gallery is owned by its artists, but with art sales down, paying rent is going to be a challenge after May, Davy said.

“We are going to be in a lot of trouble if (the COVID-19 pandemic) keeps going, and I’m sure all the other galleries in 40 West are in the same place we are. Lakewood has worked hard to build this district up, and if we can’t figure out how we are going to get through this, (40 West Arts District) can collapse pretty easily,” he said.

Lakewood City Council goes virtual Councilmembers talk new meeting format and COVID-19

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lakewood City Council has been hosting meetings on the online video communications platform Zoom. Multiple councilmembers said it has been a challenge getting public participation in the virtual meetings. JOSEPH RIOS

Lakewood City Councilmember Mike Bieda still dresses up and prepares for Lakewood City Council meetings just like he would before the COVID-19 pandemic.

But instead of driving down to the Lakewood Civic Center at 480 S. Allison Parkway on Mondays, Bieda is participating in council meetings from his home office on the online video communications platform Zoom.

“It’s nothing too bad. It has been a little bit of an adjustment of getting familiar with the technology and learning how to navigate on Zoom — but it has been pretty easy to navigate,” said Bieda.

Lakewood City Council is starting to adjust to a new reality as council has stopped in-person meetings for the time being due to COVID-19.

But Council is still working and meeting every Monday night — except now, those

meetings are on Zoom.

Lakewood City Council is able to host Zoom meetings thanks to an emergency declaration ordinance that authorizes the setting for council meetings. The ordinance, passed on March 23, was renewed at an April 13 council meeting and is scheduled to last until April 27. It was originally scheduled to end on April 13.

Prior to the April 13 council meeting, multiple councilmembers pointed to the challenge of getting public participation in the two Lakewood City Council Zoom meetings that had took place beforehand. Before the April 13 Lakewood City Council meeting, residents who wanted to participate in public comment had to post their

words online on Lakewood Speaks or call before council meetings.

But the April 13 meeting allowed for residents to finally provide their comments in a live setting by calling in.

“It is clunky with local government when you’re close to the people. It works best when you can meet with the people, but in this time (Zoom) is serving its purpose in allowing us to continue to meet,” said Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lakewood City Council has had to push back some of its long-term projects like possibly looking at expanding its reinvestment authority areas. Lakewood’s reinvestment authority has the mission of encouraging private reinvest-

ment in targeted areas of the city.

The city’s current reinvestment areas include the West Alameda Corridor Redevelopment Area, a region the city has referred to as being a catalyst in transforming land to create a downtown Lakewood, the Colfax-Wadsworth Reinvestment District where a Kmart once was and the West Colfax Avenue Corridor Reinvestment Area which runs from Sheridan Boulevard to Simms Street.

The regions could be prime areas for redevelopment as Lakewood’s growth cap, which limits new home construction to 1% of the city’s current housing stock, calls for redevelopment in blighted areas — a term that describes Lakewood’s reinvestment authority sectors.

Lakewood Economic Development Director Robert Smith was set to present to council about the city’s reinvestment authority at a canceled March 16 meeting. “(COVID-19) has slowed things down. It is a lot more difficult (for council business),” said Lakewood City Councilmember Jacob LaBure. “There is not a level of comfort with moving too

Bieda was set to present a resolution at the April 13 meeting that would’ve looked at the possibility of not allowing property owners to claim their property is blighted if the owner hasn’t made an effort to keep their property safe, secure, sanitary and in good condition. Property owners in Lakewood can voluntarily have their properties assessed to determine if their property displays features that would consider it blighted, based on factors determined by urban renewal law.

But Bieda’s resolution was pushed back to leave room to discuss matters related to COVID-19.

“Dealing with the pandemic is obviously our top priority, and we have moved all of our other priorities down and put them on the backburner and tried to clear our city council agenda for the next month or two so that we can deal with immediate problems and issues related to the virus,” said Bieda.

As of April 10, there are 202 cases of COVID-19 in Lakewood, according to Jefferson County Public Health.

From work practices to eating and drinking habits, the COVID-19 pandemic seems to be impacting nearly every aspect of current life. In Jefferson County, that also seems to include lowering crime levels — at least as far as Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office calls for service and arrest numbers.

Last month, the sheriff ’s office received 9,979 calls for service. That’s down just under nine percent from the March 2019 total of 10,760. Arrests are down even more. In March of 2020, the Sheriff ’s Office made 247 arrests, which is down about 25 percent from the March 2019 total of 320.

Those numbers do not represent a decrease stemming from Sheriff Jeff Shrader’s directive to start using enhanced arrest standards — being much more selective about whom to arrest — as those standards only went into effect on April 1. However, the sheriff had already asked deputies to use discretion in making arrests in an effort to manage the jail population due to the pandemic weeks earlier.

Domestic Violence As stay-at-home orders have gone in Jeffco and counties throughout the nation, mental health experts have also expressed concern about the possibility that the anxiety, distress, confinement and other concerns that have come with COVID-19 would lead to large increases in domestic violence.

But the domestic violence numbers for March 2019 and 2020 provided by the sheriff ’s office paint a less clear picture as calls for service have risen while arrests have actually fallen.

In March of 2020, 83 domestic violence-related criminal justice reports were generated in the county.

That number was up from 71 in March 2019. But the 33 domestic violence arrests the department made is actually two down from the 35 such arrests the department made in March of 2019.

But while those numbers do not paint a clear picture, Amy Miller, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at the Jefferson Center, said the conditions are still right from a mental health perspective for an increase in domestic violence.

“I think the combination of the stress from the uncertainty and some of the financial strain people are experiencing can certainly heighten anyone’s level of irritability or tension or frustration and then you add that to the being cooped up with same people day in and day out and that’s a concern,” said Miller. “And if there’s

The pandemic situation also creates another concern in that victims and potential victims have fewer chances to escape a potential abuse situation by going somewhere else. Mandated reporters and others who might be able to interact with a victim and learn about any abuse that has taken place and the need to report it also now have fewer opportunities to do so, she said.

That latter issue means sheriff ’s office data may be a less reliable indicator of the amount of such violence taking place in the county, even as deputies continue to respond to reports.

Information Officer John Romero said COVID-19 has not appeared to have a big impact on either overall crime or domestic violence reports and arrests specifically.

“I looked at March 2019 as opposed to March 2020 for domestic violence reports which I think is the number everyone has been looking at and I was actually pretty surprised to see there was a decrease,” Romero said.

“In March 2019 we had 207 and in March 2020 we had 200.”

Golden Police Public Information Officer Joe Harvey said overall crime also seems to have been fairly steady.

However, he did say his department was starting to see what he described as a “slight uptick in what we would describe as family disagreements and family violence.”

“At this point, it’s been nothing really too significant but we are antici-

pating that number may go higher as we go along in this process,” Harvey said.

Among the other issues the department has seen that Harvey said are obviously attributed to COVID-19 is a “handful of altercations in front of some of the grocery stores.”

As a result, Golden police are now regularly sending officers to patrol grocery stores, particularly during morning hours reserved for seniors as Harvey said some of those altercations had taken place then. Still, Harvey said he felt good overall about how the city was handling social distancing and the challenges that come with it.

“From what I’m seeing under the circumstances we are all facing think it’s been as good as possible and I don’t think we’ve had anybody that’s gotten really out of control,” he said. “I do think we’ve had some instances where we’ve had some people that were feeling distressed and overreacted in some scenarios that caused us some issues but I think those have been few and far between right now.”

Still, Harvey said he and other officers remain uneasy about the situation, particularly given the uncertainty about how long it could last.

“I think for the most part people are trying to do their best,” he said. But I’m not going to lie, I think all of law enforcement is a bit nervous about what this may look like in two, three and maybe four weeks, especially if pools aren’t being opened and the normal places that people are able to take kids.”

uring these strange days and nights, many of you are watching films to pass time. So am I: mostly comedies, mysteries, and, believe it or not, love stories.

Yes, I am a bread crumb-encrusted old frog, but deep down (very deep) I am a romantic, bread crumb-encrusted old frog, with some love story suggestions.

I can’t, however, recommend “Love Story,” the 1970 movie based on Erich Segal’s book.

Segal was a Harvard, Yale, and Princeton professor who should have known better. I hope he grimaced all the way to the bank.

Everyone knows about “Casablanca,” so I will skip it. The same goes for “When Harry Met Sally” and “Titanic.”

How are we responding to the moment

o, where do we stand?

No, this is not going to be a medical/epidemiological/economic briefing. I’m not qualified to do any of that, and, HITTING frankly, if you wanted that, there’s only about HOME 73 other outlets you could go to for much better information than you’ll get from me.

Though, I do want to take this opportunity to point out that there was a limited study that came out from Germany last Michael Alcorn week that indicates that seven TIMES as many people seem to be getting exposed to the Wuhan coronavirus and fight it off before they become symptomatic or have a chance to get tested for it than are actually contracting SARS-CoViD 19. So there’s that.

But, no — I’m more interested in how we are responding to it.

For instance, the Kia Motor Corporation has pledged a donation of $1 million dollars through its Accelerate the Good program specifically targeted to help homeless youth during the CoViD-19 crisis. As they say in their ad, how can you shelter in place when you live on the streets?

Kia is not alone in its good corporate citizenship. Simple gestures matter:

King Soopers dedicates the first hour of business two days a week specifically to serve the most vulnerable population during this pandemic, the elderly. Dow Chemical has tasked five of its production sites with producing over 200 metric tons of hand sanitizer for donation to local health systems and government agencies.

Lowe’s, the home repair company, donated $10 million worth of personal protective gear to help protect healthcare workers on the front lines of the crisis; Target and UPS have followed suit with their own donations of P.P.E. The Hilton Corporation has partnered up with American Express to donate 1 million hotel rooms for nurses, doctors, EMTs, paramedics and others who need a night (or an afternoon) of peace and quiet in isolation from their families, before jumping back in to the battle.

Daniel Murphy, the first baseman for the Colorado Rockies, has personally donated $100k to a foundation helping keep paychecks flowing to the minor league players who are still working their way up. In other words, he and his family just gave a big chunk of money to help people who are trying to replace him.

The quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees, announced a couple weeks ago that he and his family are donating $5 million to the state of Louisiana, through a number of charities, to guarantee that ten thousand meals a day can be delivered to children on meal plans, seniors and families that require them.

All of these are impressive, and wonderful, and indicative of the big hearts and generous spirits of Americans and companies all over. But, frankly, what I’ve been most impressed by are smaller acts of dedication and service. Tens of thousands of teachers all over the metro area going through crash courses on technology so that they can reinvent the education system in a matter of weeks.

The lady I saw in the store last week, rushing to the paper products aisle to grab a pack of toilet paper so that she could hand it to the elderly woman who couldn’t quite move quickly enough to get to that aisle before it was all gone.

One church in Arvada, hastily erecting a drive-in theater setup in their parking lot — the day before it snowed — so that they could hold an Easter Service for people who came up in their cars.

And let’s not forget the howl. That nightly display of respect and support for the healthcare workers in our neighborhoods by — I’m sure no metaphor was intended — howling at the moon (or the night sky) at 8 p.m.

In other words, our best selves are looking pretty good right now. Keep it up, folks. We can do this!

Outdoor Lab to celebrate first-ever virtual Earth Day Broncos quarterback Drew Lock, former Denver linebacker Karl Mecklenburg among special guests for 50th anniverary event

A virtual celebration will bring the Jefferson County community together for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day while raising awareness for the Outdoor Lab program.

The Jefferson County-based Outdoor Lab Foundation joins with the Denver Broncos, Colorado Opens Lands, Great Outdoors Colorado, and the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL)to raise awareness for the Outdoor Lab program and the importance of supporting community nonprofits.

Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock will share a message with the Jefferson County community during the online celebration, from 5-6 p.m.

Thursday, April 16.

Celebrity guest Karl Mecklenburg, former linebacker for the Broncos, will join guest speakers and experts from Colorado Open Lands and NREL to showcase the importance of conservation in Colorado, to share tips and tricks on how to practice and be mindful of conservation at home, and answer questions from the community.

The Outdoor Lab Foundation encourages attendees to get food from local restaurants beforehand to create the feel of a virtual happy hour.

Keynote speaker Sarah Parmar, director of conservation with Colorado Open Lands, has spent more than a decade at Colorado Open Lands and leads its private land conservation work. She will discuss the importance of getting kids and young adults involved in conservation at a young age and some of the best ways to do so.

How first responder agencies are adjusting to the pandemic Local fire departments and sheriff’s offices face challenges finding safety equipment

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, area first responder agencies are changing protocols and learning to cope with the new normal. Here’s how some local sheriff ’s offices and fire departments are adjusting.

South Metro Fire Rescue Covering a vast swath of the southern suburbs, stretching from Parker to south Jefferson County, South Metro is the third-largest fire department in the state.

All crews now wear personal protective equipment (PPE) on all medical calls, said Jon Adams, the district’s assistant chief of operations. Specialized crews disinfect ambulances after every run involving someone in respiratory distress.

Among callers who report COVIDlike symptoms, crews are assessing who can stay home rather than be

transported to a hospital, which comes as a shock to some.

“Normally if you call 911 and you want to go to the hospital, we’ll take you there,” Adams said. “But the hospitals are inundated. Many can self-care at home.”

The district had about a dozen firefighters out sick or on self-quarantine on March 31, with four testing positive for COVID-19. If a high number of firefighters were out sick at once, the district could adjust by reducing the number of firefighters on one engine from four to three, Adams said. In a worst-case scenario, with hundreds out, the district could temporarily shut down some firehouses.

Adams said he is confident the district will fare well.

“I sleep well at night knowing our crews will provide the best service in the state,” Adams said.

West Metro Fire Protection District West Metro covers a diverse swath of Jefferson County, ranging from rural mountain communities to dense urban areas.

Like South Metro, West Metro crews are dressing in full PPE for all medical calls, including Tyvek suits normally reserved for hazardous waste spills, said district spokeswoman Ronda Scholting.

Scholting said the district has “a few” firefighters who have tested positive for COVID-19, but they were nearly recovered as of April 2 and were expected to return to duty soon.

All personnel are checked for fevers at the beginning and end of every shift.

The district plans to add two ambulances to its roster in coming days to address the added time spent disinfecting ambulances after medical calls, Scholting said.

If the district fell below minimum staffing requirements, the plan is to reassign firefighters from training and life safety divisions to fire stations.

Denver Fire Department Denver Fire, the state’s largest fire department, also covers Englewood.

In order to reduce exposure to potential sources of infection, firefighters are talking to patients by phone, or through windows and doors when possible, said spokeswoman Kelli Christensen.

Though the department has adequate supplies of gloves, gowns and goggles, supplies of masks aren’t as high as the department would like. If firefighters run out, they will switch to SEE RESPONDERS, P27

Firefighters from Golden will be featured on the April 18 episode of “Mission Unstoppable,” which spotlights women doing extraordinary work in STEM professions.

The goal of the CBS Saturday morning series is to showcase positive role models for girls. Of the 77 firefighters in Golden, 21%are women.

In the episode, volunteer Captain Tina Gustafson demonstrates how water is hooked up and regulated through the truck, and how math and science expertise is necessary when calculating variables such as water pressure and gravity.The team also shows how it uses thermal imaging cameras to locate hot spots and trapped victims and demonstrate how firefighters suit up into full gear in under one minute. Oscar-winning actress Geena Davis is executive producer of “Mission Unstoppable,” and host Miranda Cosgrove hosts. The series is part of CBS’s Educational/Informational “It’s Epic” Saturday morning programming block. It is produced by Litton Entertainment and Lyda Hill Philanthropies’ If/Then Initiative.

Turn your garden into a thriving success with help from the master gardeners at CSU Extension

n Colorado, there’s a program comprised of 2,500 master gardeners across all 64 counties that develop science-based research and information, making it where you don’t have to spend hours upon hours researching how to develop and be successful at growing a garden.

Through the Colorado State University (CSU) Extension program, certified experts do the research, planting and studies to help you be successful in growing any kind of plant no matter where you live in the state. The master gardeners are available by phone, email and in person (when home-based orders are not in place). These gardeners can diagnose problem soils, identify viruses and insect issues through photos and lab testing.

“When it comes to the Extension program, we like to say why Google it?” said John Murgel, the CSU extension program associate for horticulture in Douglas County. “A Google search provides crazy results that takes you all over the map.

With Extension, you get one-on-one interaction, fact sheets on everything local. It’s an awesome resource.”

All of the master gardeners with the Extension program are certified horticulturist. Through a variety of outlets, including blogs, they provide help to gardeners with watering, planting guidelines, understanding sunlight, Colorado’s crazy weather patterns and explain what the elevation here means to seeds you put into the soil.

Patti O’Neil, horticulturist and urban food systems coordinator for CSU Extension in Jefferson County, said they want gardens to thrive and want residents to know they are here to help at every stage of gardening from planning, planting, growing to tips on how to store food after the harvest.

“One of our biggest fears is that a resident starts a garden without assistance, they fail and never come back to it again,” she said. “We want gardeners to plant vegetables, flowers and everything. We are here to make any garden, whether it’s here on the front range or up in the mountains, succeed.”

O’Neil said when home-based rules are not in

place, the Jefferson County offices can provide inperson diagnosis of plant problems and test soil in the lab. Classes are also offered in most counties.

With soil, we stress that it’s the most important aspect of getting started,” O’Neil said. “You can’t always just dig in some dirt and be successful.

We test soil in labs and can provide guidance on nutrients needed to get you started.”

O’Neil said with 155 master gardeners available in Jefferson County alone, they are always on hand to answer questions, help diagnose and solve problems and provide information.

“Call us with any questions,” O’Neil said. “Don’t be afraid to asks a lot of questions. We want to help with all of it.”

Murgel said when it comes to weather and landscape, Colorado is diverse. The master gardeners with CSU Extension take into account all Colorado landscapes and provide fact sheets on what to plant and when to avoid frost, weather issues or what to consider in regards to altitude.

“We understand that now isn’t a good time to plant tomatoes or squash, you want to wait for the heat,” Murgel said. “But radish doesn’t always do as well when it’s overheated, which means now is the time to plant some of your vegetables. Our websites and master gardeners can provide all of that information that is local to the area residents live.”

The CSU Extension program was established

by Congress in 1914, authorizing land-grant universities to get research-based information out to the public. Besides landscape and gardening the certified experts provide free information in agriculture, 4-H development, animal health, drought conditions, renewable energy, natural resources and food safety and health.

The value of gardening goes beyond what grows in the ground

ardening is a great way to improve the community, beautify a yard or provide great-tasting fruits and vegetables. However, going beyond the roots, gardening has proven to be beneficial both mentally and physically.

Studies continue to show that gardening goes beyond the plants and provides true physical and mental health benefits.

John Murgel, a horticulturist with the Colorado State University Extension program in Douglas County, said for him, gardening provides connection to human history and human life.

“Gardening connects me to the outdoors, to the plants and wild birds and native bees that live in my neighborhood,” he said. “Depending on which plants I’m using at the moment, (gardening) can be everything from childhood memories from family heirloom plants or veggies to people in other ages and in other continents going back centuries or further. They give me deep perspective.”

On the physical side, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) says gardening is a great way to get exercise.

Gardening can decrease risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke,

depression, colon cancer and premature death.

Some of the top benefits of gardening include: A natural source of Vitamin D: Vitamin D increases calcium levels, which provides support for bones and the immune system. For older adults, increased Vitamin D can help improve serum levels.

Reducing stress: Gardening has proven to be a calming activity for those suffering from anxiety. Whether gardening alone, or with a group, digging in the dirt, planting, growing and harvesting can help create a calm.

Good exercise: Gardening is a good way to increase physical activity without feeling the pain of a full workout. The CDC recommends being active for at least 2.5 hours a week to strengthen muscles and improve bone health and circulation.

A good after-retirement activity: For many aging adults, retirement can become lonely. Gardening has served as a good hobby and way to engage with neighbors and feel a sense of accomplishment as the garden grows.

Decrease in dementia risk: A variety of studies have found that gardening helps the mind, decreasing the risk of dementia through physical activity.

Creates a healthier diet: By growing your own food, which means vegetables, gardeners tend to have better diets, which improves weight, diabetes risk, and lower blood pressure.

Colorado Book Award finalists in General Fiction, Literary Fiction, and Poetry will read and answer questions at a Zoom and Facebook Live event at 7 p.m. Friday, April 17.

Aimie Runyan will read from her general fiction novel “Girls on the Line.” The author of four historical novels, including one international bestseller, Runyan writes to celebrate history’s unsung heroines. Linda Lafferty will read from her general fiction novel “Light in the Shadows.” A two-time Colorado Book Award winner, her books have been

translated into 10 languages. She holds a doctorate in bilingual special education and taught in Spain for three years. Lafferty is also an avid equestrian and horse lover.

Andy Stone is the co-author of “Light in the Shadows.” He began his career as a reporter for The Aspen Times and worked his way up to publisher, winning numerous awards for his columns along the way. He retired from the newspaper in 2016. Stone has two other published novels.

Body weight is all you need And while his gyms are all stocked with the latest equipment designed to push his customers to their physical limits, Cerf said there’s plenty to do in homes that have no such equipment. Cerf was the official trainer for Fitbit in Colorado for four years, hosting special exercise events around the area.

“Every workout I did for that was 100 percent body weight-based,” Cerf said.

That means lots of push-ups, sit-ups, lunges and squats, but Cerf said there are plenty of ways to vary the routine.

“We never did the same exercise twice in four years,” Cerf said.

“And people were surprised. If you have equipment, great. But, as one client and I have joked, your body is heavier than any equipment you’d lift in the gym anyways.”

Colorado Symphony commits to #PlayOn

“We hope that you and yours are safe, well, and in good spirits during this uneasy time while enCOMING joying your favorite ATTRACTIONS song, work, or maybe performing something yourself,” wrote Jerome H. Kern, CEO and chair of the board of trustees, in an email to symphony supporters.

“We are committed to getting back on the stage as soon as we’re Clarke Reader able while maintaining our infrastructure with the financial strength we’ve developed over the past decade.”

The most visible way the symphony is keeping its work alive is through its #PlayOn series, which lets people enjoy different kinds of performances until at least May 11. About three weeks ago the symphony shared a digital version of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” on YouTube, which quickly gained traction on social media, earning about 500,000 views.

Other videos the organization has shared include bassoon excerpts from “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and hornplayers performing The Police’s “Don’t Stand So Close to Me.” For long time supporters of the symphony, there’s also the opportunity to go back in time with Virtual Music Hours — a weekly replay of archival audio recordings that people can stream. To make the concert even more special, they feature conductor and musician introductions and concert activities.

“We are also in the process of developing educational content for children and parents for use while we shelter in place,” Kern noted.

On the financial side of things, staff has been working to get a handle on what the future will look like with concerts being postponed and an uncertain timeframe as to when things will reopen.

s challenging as it may be to keep up your fitness regimen while stuck in home quarantine, one thing is almost necessary — an internet connection.

As people across the country fondly recall their gyms stocked with rows of elliptical machines, racks of weights and a schedule full of Zumba classes, their trainers are busy uploading content for their clients at home, all designed to help them whip their bodies back into shape — or at least stop them from losing the physical gains they’ve made.

“I guess we are making the best of a bad situation and have kind of pivoted at this point,” said Jon Cerf, owner of fitness chain Core Progression. “We’ve pivoted to running all of our facilities virtually for now and doing the quarantine.”

Cerf operates four Core Progression gyms in the Denver Metro area — in Arvada, Lakewood, Northglenn and downtown Denver — with more planned as franchises are slated to open in Florida, North Carolina, California and Nevada.

All the classes Cerf and his team have run in the past few weeks have been virtual.

“Anybody that was doing our small group offerings, we have livestreams through Zoom and Google Hangouts daily,” he said.

“Clients that were doing private or semi-private sessions, we can do Facetime and Skype for a more private kind of workout.”

“Each studio has a different calendar, so if they wanted to work with the people in our Boulder location they can sign up there,” Cerf said. “Or if they don’t know which location, we can pair them with the person that’s the best fit during this time.”

Core Progression’s sessions range from $20 to $50 depending on the number of spaces and the duration of each workout. The private videos go both ways, with coaches watching the people training as much as the people training watch them.

Proper technique is key, he said: “It’s all kinesiology, physics and understanding anatomy and how to put people in the right position to get the most benefit. A lot of what we do is individual, and we like to tailor it to our clients. It’s not the same as being there in person, but we can offer tips: Drop your hips, rotate left, bring your knee up.

You are still getting that personal coaching as opposed to passively watching a workout.”

Lindsay Gablehouse, the fitness manager for the Chuze Fitness location at 120th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard, said her company is loading up videos on the internet, too. She runs the team training program and also leads cycling, body pump and yoga classes.

Chuze does not offer one-on-one training with their coaches, either online or at the gym. Instead, they focus on training in a group setting. During normal times, the gym hosts seven training sessions throughout the day beginning at 5 a.m. with room for up to 39 people.

“We had to close off, generally, on March 16,” she said. “That was on Monday, and on Wednesday the

Change the exercises to fit you. If doing a push-up is too hard, trying pushing up from the knees instead of your feet. Too easy? Try to clap in between push-ups.

Get creative. Plumb the depths of the storage closet, the kids’ toy box and the garage for equipment that can be lifted, pulled, pushed or stretched to work out your muscles.

Weight doesn’t matter. Fit by Hyland Hills’ David Wagner posted a how-to video showing a vigorous workout using a roll of toilet paper.

Get outside. As long as walks in the park are acceptable, and keeping physical distance rules in mind, get out and walk.

Some fresh air and the sun can brighten your mood while you get your heart rate up.

Enlist the kids. Roll around with them, wrestle in the back yard, play catch with a ball or a Frisbee. Chuze Fitness trainer Lindsay Gablehouse said she was surprised how much of a workout she got just kicking a soccer ball in the backyard with her sons.

“Our team training sessions run on Instagram, we run two, one at 1 a.m. and at 1 p.m.,” Gablehouse said. “All of our family workouts are on Facebook. Our group fitness sessions go back and forth, between the two platforms.”

Viewers don’t have to watch them live. Gablehouse said all of the sessions are archived on the @Chuzefitness IGTV link, instagram.com/ chuzefitness/channel. They can find more by searching for #Chuzemovement, where coaches, trainers and members are encouraged to post unique ways to exercise without equipment.

David Wagner, general manager at Fit by Hyland Hills at 120th Avenue and Federal Boulevard, is also a fan of household items.

“You can use a jug of water,” he said. “You hold it in front and do a front squat, just holding it in front of your face. Or you can use a chair or a staircase to do a tricep dip.”

Stairs are a good thing, too, and combining them with something heavy makes for a good workout.

Wagner said some equipment is small and inexpensive and easy to get — even in quarantine. He recommends going online to find elastic bands, wide strips of material that provide resistance and make anything, from a leg lift to an arm curl, more difficult.

Chuze’s Gablehouse said there is plenty of room for creativity, even in body weight exercises.

“We might all know the traditional moves, but for each one there are variations they can do to make those traditional moves different,” she said. “You can do push-ups from the knee, or from the toes.

But you can also do them with one leg lifted. Those are not the same moves and the intensity differences you create there are dramatic.”

She found her children’s sled in her garage and gave herself a workout one day pushing it around the backyard. She said getting outside, whether it’s on neighborhood sidewalks or just in the back yard, is very important.

“With everybody stuck in their homes, we need to play,” she said.

“As the house feels smaller and smaller every day, the mental benefit of laughing and getting those natural endorphins running in your body is important. We need to take a couple breaks everyday to just feel good in our bodies and connect with our families.”

Hyland Hills’ Wagner agrees: Just about any movement is good movement.

“Constantly, constantly move.

You want to make sure you get up and get some movement during the day,” Wagner said. “Just walk around your house, go on outside and go in the sun in your front yard. Movement is key. You do not want to be sedentary, and the more you sit down, the more the quarantine gets in your way.”

That does not have to be limited to time spent working out.

“Do what you can to stay busy around the house,” Wagner said.

“Do projects you’d normally be putting off. Clean out the garage, or something. There are all kinds of things you can do to keep active.”

Gains in the kitchen Nutrition is another area to focus on while stuck indoors, and Wagner said he subscribes to the saying that muscle gains — or weight loss — are made more in the kitchen than they are in the gym. It helps, because his spouse, Blythe, is the nutritionist for Fit, and she and nutritional pharmacist Ray Hinish have put together a series of podcasts called “Cut the Fat” (cutthefatpodcast.com) that focuses on eating well all the time — not just during a quarantine.

“Eat healthy and keeping your habits as they were,” he said. “You still want to prep your meals like you are going to work. That way you don’t put on too much weight.”

With gatherings banned, options dwindle for funeral services Metro area families can choose to livestream or postpone

While losing a loved one at any time is difficult, planning a funeral has been made even more complicated as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to halt gatherings.

With the statewide stay-at-home measure aimed at stopping the virus spread in place, Denver-area funeral homes are working to find innovative ways to help clients celebrate their family member’s or friend’s life without a public service.

Many funeral homes, such as Dignity Memorial, are offering a livestream of funeral services so that more than immediate family members can view the event.

“Grief is an emotion with a lot of tears and hugging and hand-holding,” said Matt Whaley, Denver’s market director for Dignity Memorial. “It has been really, really different for us in the last few weeks.”

Dignity Memorial, which has several funeral homes around in the metro area, operates Olinger Crown Hill in Wheat Ridge, Olinger Chapel Hill in Centennial, Olinger Andrews Caldwell Gibson in Castle Rock and Olinger Funeral, Cremation and Cemetery — Highland in Thornton, along with other locations in Denver, Aurora and Thornton.

Parker and Elizabeth Funeral Home in Parker and the Horan & McConaty chain of funeral homes have also adopted the livestream approach.

While some people have chosen this option, more have decided to simply postpone the memorial.

“A lot of the time what we see is cremation. And that gives people the ability to put it off and have a service when we’re all back to where we can be together,” said Lloyd Harwood, general manager at Parker and Elizabeth Funeral Home.

“No memorial at the time of death postpones Wellensiek grief,” he said. “To have a little finality in that moment is important.”

Horan & McConaty has seven locations including Arvada, Centennial, Lakewood and Thornton.

Wellensiek worries that some families will delay a public service only to eventually decide not to go through with one at all “and miss that opportunity to have people come support them,” he said.

“For people who are not allowed to have a ceremony, it’s difficult,” he said. “They’re going through the grieving process.”

To help lessen the financial burden for the families who wish to have

a private service now and a public service later, Horan & McConaty will only charge for one of these events, Wellensiek said.

Many family members of veterans are also choosing to delay the memorial services for their loved ones at Fort Logan National Cemetery, administrative officer David Roberts said.

“A lot of our volunteer support agencies that provide honors are not coming out for services,” he said.

For veteran services at the cemetery, honors can include traditions like a firing party or an honor bell.

The cemetery is continuing to accommodate burials and is cataloging the families who wish to have a memorial with honors later.

The industry has changed in other ways too, Harwood said. Instead of folks coming into the funeral home to make arrangements, they’re asking to do so virtually, he said.

Funeral homes, as a business deemed essential under the state order, are also working to keep their

employees safe as they continue to come to work. That means social distancing, avid cleaning and frequent hand-washing for the employees.

“The staff has a level of fear,” Wellensiek said. “They’re dealing with deceased people who died from the virus and family members who were maybe exposed.”

The employees — like those in many industries — are under added stress due to the virus, he said.

“We’ve really focused on also caring for our team,” he said. “Our biggest concern is if our staff gets sick, then we can’t serve the public.”

While funeral homes have been forced to change their policies, services and interactions with clients, most agree that the families they work with have handled the additional hardship very well.

“They’re frustrated like all of us that we can’t open these services up to more people,” Whaley said. “But families have been extremely understanding.”

responding to medical calls in “turnout” gear normally used for fires, including self-contained breathing apparatus, providing a 30-minute air supply.

There were 32 personnel who had tested positive for COVID-19 in Denver’s Department of Public Safety as of April 3. The department includes Denver Fire, but also Denver Police, Sheriff and 911.

In a worst-case scenario, with high numbers out sick, the department would temporarily suspend its emergency medical responses and focus on fire protection and emergency rescue, leaving medical response to ambulance crews, Christensen said.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office The Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office is working hard to obtain as much PPE as possible, said Sheriff Jeff Shrader.

“There are a lot of situations for viral exposure we might not be aware of,” Shrader said. For example, deputies responded to a car accident in which a victim ended up testing positive for COVID-19.

In anticipation of a potential wave of sickness, Shrader deputized all officers from the county’s police departments on April 1.

Shrader said he has worked with the courts to reduce the jail’s population through a combination of bonds, home detention and an increased use of summonses instead of arrests by deputies, bringing the inmate count from an average of just under 1,200 to below 750.

The jail had 31 inmates in isolation on April 2, with 11 of them showing COVID-19 symptoms, and the remainder having been in contact with someone who tested positive.

“Normally when we’re dealing with a critical incident, we have knowledge of the suspect,” Shrader said. “We can see them. In this regard, this is an invisible enemy.”

Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Rare among metro-area agencies, Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown said his office is so well-stocked on PPE that it was able to donate some of its stockpile to other local agencies.

Brown said his deputies are taking as many reports as possible by phone or online to minimize exposure, and working to keep the jail population down. There were no known cases of COVID-19 in the jail, he said.

Like other local law enforcement agencies, Brown said the volume of calls the office is receiving is down.

“I want to remind people that stayat-home orders are hard, but even a simple drive around town puts first responders at risk if you get in an accident,” Brown said. “It takes resources away from those who need it.”

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Tony Spurlock said his department has received two shipments of PPE from the federal government, and feels confident the department will be able to obtain more in coming weeks as production ramps up nationwide.

Meanwhile, Spurlock said the county jail population is down to 275, from an average of nearly 400. Like other county jails, Spurlock said his department has worked with the court system to grant early release to some inmates, and releasing others on personal recognizance bonds.

Spurlock also said his deputies are advised to increase the number of summonses they issue instead of arrests to keep the jail from filling back up. The jail has some inmates in the infirmary, Spurlock said, but none were showing COVID-19 symptoms.

About two dozen employees of the department were out sick on April 3, Spurlock said, which was about average. Like Jefferson County’s Shrader, Spurlock said he would consider deputizing police officers if staffing levels fell low enough.

“Follow the public health orders, and maintain social distancing,” Spurlock said. “If we have patience, we’ll get through this.”
