expectations, and that’s the key to anything, I think. Then, the things I was painting started to improve.

Artist and owner of Landt Creative Space in 40 West Arts District About me I moved here when I was only 6 years old from New York. Art didn’t really interest me when I was a child, and I didn’t start painting until I was 30.

My sister died in a car crash, and she had just started painting. I was really influenced by my best friend at the time who was a painter, and she was going to school for painting.

I thought it was amazing, because she would do these large-scale abstracts. I started playing with house paints and thought I would try painting on a canvas. I took my painting to my best friend, and she thought it was awesome.

I told my stepfather about it, and he gave me my sister’s art supplies.

Suddenly, I had this set of oil paints, acrylics and brushes.

Life in 40 West Arts District For nine years, I had Landt Creative Space, my art studio, in the Santa Fe Art District. I thought 40 West Arts District would be a great place to move my studio since I already live in Lakewood.

I usually teach in acrylics, and I do some oil classes. I love watching people create and learn and have those “aha moments.” I have classes about three to five times a week.

It’s awesome to have residents in here. It’s nice, because there are so many art places around here. First Fridays are great, because they’re so easy and approachable. I think everyone is really friendly. We’re very open and accepting.

Run for good: Hope House 5K May 4 STAFF REPORT

The Hope House 5K & Fun Run is scheduled for Saturday, May 4, at Lake Arbor Park in Arvada. Last year over 300 people showed up for this event that is both family-friendly and competitive as it is an official BolderBOULDER qualifier race.

Hope House is an Arvada-based nonprofit that offers free self-sufficiency programs to parenting teen moms. Proceeds from the race will support these programs, which include residential, GED and college and career.Designed for runners, walkers and competitive racers, the Hope House 5K features a paved trail, and the fun run will take place after the official 5K. The morning also includes activities for kids, including an obstacle

course, face painting and the everpopular Diaper Dash.

“We are so honored by the support that Arvada has shown us since the day we first opened our doors 16 years ago,” said Lisa Steven, founder and executive director of Hope House. “When the community shows our teen moms that they believe in them, it encourages them as they work hard toward independence and self-sufficiency.”

Hope House of Colorado is currently expanding and anticipates opening its new Resource Center in Arvada later in 2019. The new facility will allow the organization to serve up to 450 teen moms annually.

Annual drug take back set for April 13 STAFF REPORT

The W. Michael Northey Foundation is again partnering with the Arvada Police Department to offer metro area residents a Drug Take Back Event 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 13 at Arvada Police Headquarters, 8101 Ralston Road, Arvada.

This is a free event; however, donations are accepted and will benefit the W. Michael Northey Foundation, whose mission is to honor and preserve the memory of Officer Michael Northey by providing financial assistance to officers and their families in times of need and awarding scholarships to graduating seniors in Arvada to further their education.

Through the underwriting of the Ar-

vada Vitality Alliance, Custom Environmental Services, Inc. and Sooper Credit Union, all donations will directly benefit the Foundation. In 2018, the Foundation awarded 15 scholarships totaling $25,500.

‘It had a big impact on my life’ State Rep. Patrick Neville, a student at Columbine in 1999, fights for gun owners’ rights

Ask Tom Mauser about his shoes.

Mauser’s son Daniel was killed at Columbine High School in 1999. In the years that followed, Mauser became an outspoken advocate for stronger gun laws.

And through every event, every rally, every speech, if you look at Mauser’s feet, you’ll see the same pair of sneakers.

“These are the shoes Daniel was wearing when he died,” Mauser said.

“We wear the same size. This way, I feel like Daniel is walking with me.”

Before Daniel’s death, Mauser said he wasn’t much of an activist. He’d write the occasional letter to the editor, he said, but Columbine threw him into the public eye.

Mauser said he was haunted by a brief conversation he had with his son two weeks before he was killed.

“Daniel was on the debate team, and after a conversation with his teammates, he said, ‘Dad, did you know there are loopholes in the Brady Bill?’

I blew it off and said, ‘No, Daniel, I didn’t know that.’”

The bill requires background checks for gun sales. The Columbine killers obtained their guns through a friend who bought them at a gun show, according to news reports from the time, circumventing the law.

“I felt I had to act,” Mauser said.

A little more than a week after Daniel’s murder, Mauser attended a

COMING NEXT WEEK More stories from those whose lives were never the same after the Columbine tragedy. protest against the National Rifle Association, which pressed forward with plans to hold its national convention in Denver amid controversy after the shooting.

“I brought a sign with a picture of my son, and 400 fliers to pass out,” Mauser said. “Thousands of people showed up. I had no idea.”

An organizer asked him to speak to the crowd.

“It took me out of my shell,” Mauser said. “I’ve never been the same since.”

Mauser is now a spokesman and board member for Ceasefire Colorado, a group that advocates for stricter gun laws.

“We have to take this seriously,” Mauser said. “We have a shameful level of gun violence in America, and we have to do something about it.”

Closing loopholes in gun-sale laws is a high priority for Mauser, as are universal background checks. Mauser also supports the recently passed “red flag” bill, a controversial measure that would allow judges to order guns taken from people believed to pose a threat to themselves or others. He would also like to see laws that prohibit felons from owning guns extended to people convicted of misdemeanors involving violence.

Mauser said he’s all too familiar with arguments against him from gun rights advocates.

“I love responding to the logic or illogic of my opponents,” Mauser said.

“By and large, the majority of Americans support the right to bear arms.

Patrick Neville was a 15-year-old sophomore at Columbine High School when two armed students walked into the building and killed 13 people, then themselves. He was on school grounds but outside when the shooting began, he said.

He doesn’t go into detail about what he saw and heard in those moments. There are survivors with more compelling stories than his, he said, and the events of that day have been widely reported. Besides, recounting the story time and time again is “exhausting,” he said, particularly leading up to the massacre’s 20th anniversary.

But make no mistake: “It had a big impact on my life,” Neville said.

Today, Neville, 35, is a Republican state representative and the House minority leader. The Castle Rock resident is among Colorado’s leading voices on gun-owners’ rights and stood in opposition to the recently passed “red flag” bill that allows firearms to be temporarily taken away from people deemed a significant threat to themselves or others.

April 20, 1999 was a blur, but it wholly changed his life trajectory, Neville said on a late-March day at his office in the state Capitol.

Later in his collegiate career, at the University of Colorado Denver, it would influence his perspective on gun rights.

His most vivid memory of the day of the tragedy is of students gathering at an elementary school following the shooting. First, there was a crowd, but as buses came to evacuate them, it slowly dwindled.

Then, the father of a student asked if Neville had seen his son.

Neville had not.

He’d known the father who approached him, and his son, since the third grade. The boys played baseball together and served as captains of their team as their fathers coached.

By high school, Neville was making all the wrong choices — in his words, he was a “punk.” Meanwhile, the man’s son “was making all the right decisions in life.” The two had drifted apart as a result.

“Once the names came out, he never got to see his son again,” Neville said, declining to name the father in what he called a political-

But that’s where the survivor’s guilt caught up with him, Neville said. Students who were excelling died that day. It inspired the teenager to change his life course.

He would go on to serve in the U.S. Army and deploy to Iraq, which impacted his life similarly to how Columbine did. He watched families mourn lost loved ones and he buried his friends. It called to mind going to the funerals of his peers after Columbine.

Then in 2014, he became the state representative for House District 45, encompassing Castle Rock, Castle Pines and portions of unincorporated Douglas County. He’s now in his third term.

Neville said he didn’t have strong opinions on gun rights until college, when he received his conceal-carry permit.

“At the time, it was illegal for me to conceal carry in my college classroom,” he said, “and if there was one place that I really felt uncomfortable or vulnerable it was sitting in a classroom.”

Colorado now allows permit holders to carry firearms on highereducation campuses.

This legislative session, Neville introduced a bill to allow someone with a concealed-carry permit to carry a firearm on public elementary, middle, junior high and high school grounds.

But the majority of these people also believe in and accept restrictions. People on the far right will never change their minds, but we need to work on the people in the middle.”

It’s not all about guns, Mauser said. The Columbine tragedy happened because “two mentally disturbed young men weren’t getting the care they needed,” he said.

“They were determined to commit suicide, and determined to take others with them,” Mauser said. “All societies have people who are suicidal. But in America, we seem to have people who want to take others with them,

Mauser said his heart aches every time he sees yet another mass shooting in the news. He says he flashes back to April 20, 1999, and hurts for the families of victims.

“I would tell the families: The world is not going to understand what you’re going through. Let yourself grieve. But as you move along, never lose sight of what your loved one would want.

They wouldn’t want you to be stuck in grief. They’d want to look down from heaven and see you living your life and doing something to honor them.”

For Tom Mauser, honoring his son means he’ll keep walking in Daniel’s shoes. out, he said. He plans to pursue legislation opposing gun-free zones again.

In the meantime, he’s met more Columbine victims and learned more of their stories.

As the public observes the 20th anniversary, it’s the lives and memories of their lost loved ones he wants people to remember.

“It’s amazing when I look back, it doesn’t seem like it was 20 years ago,” he said. “You look at the photos, and we were just little kids with such potential.”

get in his car to pick up his colleague and hear a barrage of radio traffic of “what was just starting to be Columbine.”

“And I remember thinking to myself, I don’t know what’s going on yet, or where,” said Walcher, whose car was cut off by an investigator’s vehicle going by at high speed. “It just took seconds, when I realized what was happening.”

From the different calls coming in to law enforcement, deputies thought four to six shooters may have thrown

Columbine High School into chaos the morning of April 20, 1999, said Walcher, who was designated the incident commander for the scene by the sheriff and undersheriff.

“I just tried to do everything I could to figure out what was going on,” Walcher said. “It was difficult — you don’t train (for that). These days, we’re incredibly better, and — not used to it, but we know these things happen.”

Ensuring victims’ voices are heard Courage Walk offers a time for crime victims and survivors to celebrate and acknowledge healing

Glenda Gomez of Arvada looked down at the T-shirt she was wearing on April 4.

“What’s important to me is not to remember what happened to her, but to remember her,” Gomez, 61, said. “Losing a child is an experience nobody should have to endure. But it happens to people every day.”

Gomez’s daughter Angel Delgado was murdered on Nov. 29, 2005.

About 4 a.m. that day, three men forced their way into the Arvada apartment Delgado and her boyfriend Vincent Martinez shared. The men ransacked the couple’s home in search for money and drugs, and eventually had Martinez and Delgado kneel on the floor and face each other, with their hands tied behind their backs.

The men held guns to their heads and shot both of them. Martinez survived, but Delgado did not.

The convicted murderers — Vincent Ortiz, 39; Mario Rios, 40; and Kenji Jones, 40 — are serving life sentences.

Glenda Gomez of Arvada has been attending the annual Courage Walk since 2006 in remembrance of her daughter Angel Delgado, who was murdered in 2005. This year, the 26th annual Courage Walk takes place on April 13.

CHRISTY STEADMAN “It’s been almost 14 years,” Gomez said. “I still think about what should be, but is not.”

Wearing their T-shirts with Angel Delgado’s smiling face on them, Gomez and about 40 or 50 friends and family members, including the family of a relative who has also recently suffered the loss of a child, will be attending this year’s Courage Walk on April 13.

“When you’re traumatized, your world is turned upside down,” said Vista Exline, executive director of Victim Outreach Incorporated (VOI).

“The Courage Walk is a way for us to recognize and honor what it takes to survive.”

But it has also become a benchmark for people, she added. They see each other at the walk year after year, and celebrate and acknowledge each other’s healing.

“That piece of it has become really important to survivors,” Exline said.

The Courage Walk, now in its 26th year, takes place each spring during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, celebrated April 7-13 this year with a

theme of “Honoring Our Past. Creating Hope for the Future.”

The Courage Walk not only takes place to recognize crime victims’ and survivors’ strength and courage, it also is a time for the community to speak up for the rights of crime victims of today and the future, Exline said.

“The court process can sometimes feel like everything is about the defendants,” said Jan Ferguson, manager of the victims and witness center at the First Judicial District’s courthouse in Golden.

And navigating the judicial system can be daunting for victims who are going through a traumatizing event, Ferguson said.

That’s where the victims’ advocates come in. A victims’ advocate’s role goes far beyond providing resources and information, she added.

“We’ll be there, sitting by their side, providing that emotional support,” Ferguson said. But, perhaps most importantly, she said, is “we’re here to make sure their voices are heard.”

Lakewood Foothills Rotary pledging annual donation Serving Kids provides clothing to children in Jefferson County

When longtime Jefferson County Public Schools volunteer Nancy Hoffmaster surveyed school principals in the district in 1996, she learned something troublesome — at least 500 children didn’t have a winter jacket.

Poverty is still an issue that plagues some students in Jefferson County Public Schools. Around 30 percent of the school district’s students are eligible for free and reduced lunch, according to the Colorado Department of Education.

That’s why the Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club, a group that develops projects to address critical issues, sees the work that Serving Kids, founded

by Hoffmaster, as being so vital. Serving Kids provides students clothing, and it received a vita donation from the Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club on April 2.

At Devinny Elementary School in Lakewood, the Rotary club pledged to donate a minimum of $1,000 each year to the Serving Kids program. So far this school year, Serving Kids has helped 1,305 students by providing

“We spend probably around $15,000 a year, and we are dependent on this kind of a gift to keep at it. If we didn’t get (the donation), the program would

shut down,” said Hoffmaster. “The world sustainable is very important to us, and that makes us think the program will continue.”

The club is planning on hosting a fundraiser for Serving Kids in July at the Melting Pot in Littleton.

“It’s very hard to learn if you are hungry, if you are ill clothed, or if you don’t have a place to sleep. The ability to help (Serving Kids) help these children and to ability to give makes a world of difference to us,” said Diana

Huffman, a member of the Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club.

The 48th Annual Jeffco Schools Foundation High School Art Exhibition will open at the Arvada Center April 12 alongside two solo shows featuring Jeffco schools alumni Austin Parkhill and Jeffco schools teacher Keith Oelschlager.

For 48 years, the Jeffco Schools Foundation High School Art Exhibition has encouraged and supported tomorrow’s artists from the Jefferson County school district, many of whom go on to thrive as professional artists, or become teachers themselves. The exhibition features more than 400 works from 23 Jefferson County high schools ranging in medium.

“Giving students that opportunity to see that they can do this professionally and give them a place to be an artist is something that encourages them to go on to those professional jobs down the road after high school,” said Scot Odendahl, coordinator of the JeffCo Schools Foundation Show, and graphic design instructor at Warren Tech.

Student work will be displayed in the Main Gallery during the month long show and a reception and awards ceremony will be held April 29.

“I really wanted to paint something big and loud that was in opposition — something more honest, something more real.”

For Parkhill, who now lived in Homer, Alaska, showing his work at the Arvada Center is in a lot of ways, a homecoming.

He will be showing work alongside Oelschlager, his former art teacher at Arvada West, who Parkhill said was extremely influential.

“It’s really special to me,” Parkhill said.

Keith Oelschlager Oelschlager said showing next to a former students makes it feel like he’s come full circle.

A Colorado native and Alameda High grad, Oelschlager has been teaching drawing and painting at Arvada West for 20 years.

He spends every extra hour he can creating.

“It’s been an adventure trying to find a way to be an art teacher and also a working artist,” he said. “I’ve never been willing to just say forget it. I never wanted to give up my passions.”

Oelschlager is the featured Jeffco schools teacher with his solo show title “Personality of Place.” The exhibit will feature paintings of notable places around the Denver Metro area.

“I noticed that a lot of things that I loved from my youth were being torn down and evaporating,” Oelschlager said. “I wanted to start documenting and celebrating these places in my painting.”

Both Parkhill and Oelschlager will give an artist talk April 12 before the shows open. All three shows will run through May 12.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards accepting applications Four sessions of week-long, expense-paid conference in July

The program is said to produce leaders, challenge grit and change perspective. The simplicity of the outdoors, combined with the complexity of hundreds of young people from a four-state region, is life changing, organizers say.

It’s the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards — a five-day, expense-paid conference held in July at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park. Rotarians from districts 5440 and 5450, covering parts of Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming and Idaho, select the young men and women to attend.

The week features a mix of activities, speakers, small group discussions and large group presentations.

In one activity, for example, participants will find a solution to an issue facing their schools, such as substance use or the pressure of social media.

What makes the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) stand out from other leadership camps is the concept, Denver-area Rotarians say.

Rotary International, the sponsor of the conference, covers the fee of $450 per person.

Local Rotarians, who interview applicants, typically look for students with leadership experience who have excelled in one or more areas of school.

Emily Ostdiek, a head counselor who attended the conference two years ago, participated in student government, her school’s newspaper, DECA and National Honor Society.

But, she said, the people who go to RYLA don’t fit a mold.

“They are going to pick a bunch of different people for a bunch of different reasons,” Ostdiek, from Nebraska, said.

RYLA bettered Ostdiek by increasing her compassion for others and teaching her to listen more, she said.

She looks forward to having a similar impact on this year’s campers.

“In that environment, you’re with people that want you to be your best you,” Ostdiek said. “In that space, you have room to explore and fail, knowing that everyone is going to be lifting you up.”

Champions in public health Jefferson County Public Health serves up awards at its public health champion awards ceremony

Tears were shed, food was scarfed down and awards were received by those who gathered for Jefferson County Public Health’s annual event recognized those who are working to make Jefferson County a better place.

In honor of National Public Health Week (April 1-7) Jefferson County Public Health, an organization that is focused on promoting and protecting health, held its public health champion awards. The awards were given out to groups, individuals and organizations who are working to improve the health of Jefferson County residents on April 2 at the Jefferson County Courthouse.

Among the award recipients were Explore and Discover, Michelle Deland, planner for North Central Region Healthcare Coalition, Meg Caley, co-founder of Sprout City Farms, Creative Treatment Options, Lakewood City Councilmember Dana Gutwein and the Citizens for a Healthier Lakewood, Adelante Jeffco and Communi-

“Our 2018 Public Health Champions are extraordinary examples of how members of the Jefferson County community can come together to create a healthier, better community for everyone,” said Dr. Mark B. Johnson in a statement. Johnson is the executive director for Jefferson County Public Health.

Health challenges that face Jefferson County include opioid and prescrip-

tion misuse, access to healthy, affordable food, youth vaping and other factors, according to Jefferson County Public Health.

Each of the health champions have worked to combat those issues like Gutewin and the Citizens for a Healthier Lakewood’s work to inform Lakewood residents about the rise of youth tobacco use. In January, Lakewood City Council voted to implement a new ordinance that requires retailers who sell non-cigarette tobacco products to have to pay a licensing application fee. The ordinance is a proven mechanism to prevent sales of tobacco to children.

“To me, anything that we can do to help our kids live a happier, healthier life is something that I want to be a part of and help address in Lakewood.

It’s such a humbling experience to get recognized for that,” said Gutwein.

together to educate Lakewood residents about the rise of youth tobacco use. In January, Lakewood City Council voted to implement a new tobacco licensing system designed to prevent sales of tobacco to children.

Some thought the first deputies on the scene could have handled it differently, but Walcher said the response is difficult to evaluate.

“The reality is, no one had ever had to deal with something like that.

We dealt with it to the best of our ability at that time,” Walcher said.

“I’ve been in law enforcement for 38 years,” Walcher said. “There’s really not a day that goes by that I don’t think about it in some capacity, 20 years later.”

More than a decade after Columbine, Walcher would face — as the Arapahoe County undersheriff — the 2012 Aurora theater attack and Arapahoe High School shooting in 2013. He’d go on to serve as Arapahoe County sheriff until early this year, following an election defeat.

After years of responding to and reading about school shootings, Walcher sees progress in how officers approach potential tragedies.

“Never have I seen law enforcement take even minor threats more seriously than they do in today’s world,” said Walcher, a member of the National Sheriffs’ Association’s subcommittee for preventing school violence.

We’re focused on the work within the neighborhood, and sometimes its nice when you can pick your head up and see that it’s making a difference in the community,” said Caley.

Friends, family, teachers and others who come into contact often with students should watch for “red flags” in a student’s life, Walcher said.

“When you see a kid start to change their behavior, be less social, grades plummet, or they’re in sports and then they stop, or when mom and dad get divorced, maybe they become loners,” Walcher said, adding that bullying should be watched for, too. “Some of those tipping points that drive them away from everyone … that’s where the prevention is so critical.”

He hopes people understand that incidents like Columbine can happen in their communities. The problem isn’t going away, he said, but incidents can be averted.

“Could we have a more positive effect on this?” Walcher said. “Absolutely, absolutely.”

Somebody prank me, please …

I

was not pranked on April Fool’s Day. In fact, even though my calendar clearly told me that it was Monday, April 1, I didn’t connect it with this favorite day. Prankworthy – but true – information did cross my desk – entertaining news about a Hamilton-esque rap version play about Alan Greenspan, former Fed chair.

Also, the delightful news that the G Line is scheduled to open later this month. But it wasn’t until my sister asked me if this was a joke that I realized no one pranked me on April Fool’s Day. Worse, I didn’t prank anyone myself.

And that’s a shame.

Pranks – as opposed to teasing, which can be annoying at best and spiteful at worst – are almost always

well intended. A gentle ribbing, with affection. An expression of camaraderie, friendship, and warmth.

Of course, pranks can get you into trouble. From my ALCHEMY childhood, I remember my father – a consummate prankster – telling the story of how he and some friends, inexplicably, positioned a bucket of water over a door, which then tipped over and doused the principal. I Andrea Doray was never quite sure whether the principal was the intended target, but I do know that my dad got a three-day “vacation” from

school.

Pranks are cherished in our family, and my sister is a master, pranking her husband that new gas grill was rolling down the hill in the backyard, or pranking her son by moving a car that he had left running while he ran back into the house for something.

In both of these cases, the prankees knew they were well-loved, and just being the recipient of a prank was a part of the family bonding experience.

Sometimes, I suppose, pranks can also be gentle reminders … such as not leaving a car running, for example.

I’m a pretty good prankster myself, and have been known to use my sister to prank a colleague, and using a colleague to prank my sister.

But some people are extraordinarily gifted. I once had a coworker who could

flawlessly imitate almost anyone over the phone, such as a pizza delivery guy trying to locate whoever ordered three large pepperonis … and a diet coke.

Or an IT help desk employee trying to “return” a call to whoever opened a service ticket.

A group of us would gather in his office as he made these prank calls – in the days before caller ID was prevalent – trying to stifle our laughter as one or another of our colleagues was trying to explain that she didn’t order pizza or that he never contacted the help desk.

One of my own favorites is to hide things, say, the mayo someone has just taken out of the fridge for a sandwich.

There is no need to be afraid of aggressively tackling climate change. Many legislators try to deny the existence of the threat and they cry that the economic costs will be too high. This morning, I saw the worst fears of a community — of a family — confirmed when the news re- HITTING ported that a body HOME found was that of a missing at-risk student, who took his own life. This, in the wake of a student walk-out at Cherry Creek H.S. on Friday in recognition of two student suicides over the course Michael Alcorn of the last three months, with a nod towards another suicide at nearby Valor Christian.

And all this in the shadow of eight suicides over the last five-and-a-half years at nearby Arapahoe H.S. Note the pattern. Note the geography.

These are not the children that we assume are growing up in horrors based on their geography. These are the children of the upper middle class, the affluent, the comfortable, from schools with high expectations and even longer litanies of accom-

Before I dive in, I’d better admit a couple of things: I am not a sociologist, a psychologist, or even any kind of certified counselor. I do not pretend to know the answer to the underlying cause, or what are the solutions. But, I do have some observations to share.

I know a former student, child of a friend, at a school that meets the description of all the schools mentioned above. She is bright, accomplished, and doing great at high school. She is also sweet, funny and beautiful. She lives in her phone.

She has had a difficult time over the last several years making friends — she has a few, a very few, close friends, but nothing that would connect her to her school.

This past week, she was in tears.

Tears of stress. Apoplectic. Paralyzed. Because she did not have a plan, yet, for college.

The full-court press about college has been on for the last two years at her high school, and the cultural pressure about college started even before that.

See, the problem is, she doesn’t really know what she wants to do with her life.

In other words, she is a very normal 16year old. But she has classmates who have spent all of their vacation time over the last two years visiting the best schools in the country; she has classmates that applied to top-tier private schools and been awarded enormous sums of money; she has this *thing* looming over her head that, at some point, her name will be read at graduation with the name of the college she will be going to, and, for some reason, something has gotten into her head that a great school like Metropolitan State University is beneath her high school.

And, to make matters worse, she has a very normal pair of parents who look at the price tag for college these days and choke on their spleens.

I don’t know what the culture is like at Cherry Creek, but I think I have an idea.

And I’d like to propose a simple thought: Relax.

We, the parents and teachers and administrators and counselors who are creating the culture that these children are growing up in, are killing our children. And, no, I am not saying we are responsible for suicide — I’m saying we’re putting more stress on them than any 16-year old is capable of handling, much less a generation of 16-year olds who are more at home in their smart phones than they are talking to each other. And if bullying plays a role, I would submit it is much like an additional bale on a camel’s back.

It is not coincidence that this epidemic of suicides and, by the way, school violence, is happening in suburbia, and not downtown.

Relax. Talk to your kids. Talk to your neighbor’s kids. Encourage children to talk to each other. Coach them, teach them, encourage them, correct them when they need it. But relax.

They’re young. Let them enjoy it.

fter graduating college, Travis Wild soon found that spending time in the mountains and on trails in Colorado gave him a place to reconnect with himself and restore his mind.

“For me, the outdoors are how everything is supposed to be without influence of problems,” Wild said, adding that nature has been the steady support in his life through rough times.

When he was diagnosed with testicular cancer almost five years ago, at age 26, Wild turned to nature to destress and cope with the difficult situation. The diagnosis came when he was changing jobs, changing relationships and mourning the loss of his grandmother.

“Outside was a place that I could go to step back and be in control a little more,” Wild said. “I got to feel normal again. Sometimes it was the only thing I had to look forward to.”

Now, Wild lives on the road, having turned his passion for outdoor space and adventure into a career as an

Wild is not alone when it comes to feeling improved mental health in the outdoors.

with depression.

“As a psychologist, when we’re trained we don’t talk about things like being outdoors as an intervention,” said Benjamin Miller, a psychologist on the board of Mental Health Colorado. “But when you think about the exposure to nature, there’s no surprise that it can decrease some symptoms of anxiety and depression.”

With so many talented people sharing a space, some are going to receive more attention than others, which is why many people may not be familiar with the pianist and songwriter J. C. Johnson. But “Trav’lin” the final production of the Arvada Center’s COMING aims to ATTRACTIONS 2018-2019 address this.

“Musically, the 1930’s through 50’s era is my era for music,” said Milton Craig Nealy, who plays George in the show. “Everything was so artistic. The dialogue and the music being written Clarke Reader then was so beautiful.”

The regional premiere of “Trav’lin” runs at the theater, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., through April 28. Performances are at 1 p.m. Wednesdays, 7:30 p.m.

Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Featuring the music of Johnson – who is most well-known for working with greats like Fats Waller and Bessie Smith, as well as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald – the show focuses on three generations of couples as they attempt to find their way to each other in the world of early jazz and swing.

“There’s nothing like a great lyric, even though we’re living in a time that’s pretty jaded,” said Natalie Oliver Atherton, who plays Billie. “I think audiences will be truly entertained and be lifted by these love stories.”

Both Atherton and Nealy spoke glowingly of the work done by every department to bring this vibrant time in history to life and how much fun the cast has had bringing their characters to life.

“This is one of those old-fashioned musicals with the kind of happy endings you don’t very much anymore,” Nealy said. “These artists were achieving so much, and I love the music they were writing.”

“I spoke with my 27-year-old son and he recognized the roots of hip-hop in the music being made at this time,” Atherton added. “So, even younger kids will find connections in this music to what they’re listening to today.”

“One of the really interesting things this study shows is that nature contact during the workday leads to lower stress and higher job satisfaction,” Miller said.

In addition to being surrounded by nature, Miller said the practices that come with it help to improve mental health.

“We are we able to rest our minds and be present and focus on the moment,” Miller said.

In 2018, 55 percent of visitors to Jefferson County Open Space parks and trails said they saw the outdoor space as adding extreme benefit to their emotional wellbeing, ranking it fourth on a survey that measured the benefits of open space.

Last year, an estimated 7 million people visited the 56,000 acres of preserved land, 28 parks and 244 miles of trail in the Jeffco Open Space park system.

“We all knew it in our hearts, but to see it on paper was impactful,” said Mary Ann Bonnell, visitor services manager for Jeffco Open Space. “We now understand that people implicitly come to our parks for emotional wellbeing.”

This was the first time the survey, conducted last in 2011, measured this metric.

The next step, Bonnell said, is to protect visitor experience as best as possible. That means preserving a quiet park and trail, so those who want to connect with nature can.

Jeffco Open Space has an amplified music regulation as well as a drone ban and leash law.

“I know these seem tangential, but it’s respecting the experience people are having outdoors,” Bonnell said.

Book’s live-or-die story proves impossible to ignore

ou’ve been told it’s impossible.

No one can do it. You may as well not even try because it’s never been done before. Not possible — except when it is, because BOOKWORM there’s no other way. It’s a live-or-die matter, as in the new book “I Had to Survive” by Dr. Roberto Canessa and Pablo Vierci.

Growing up in Uruguay, the privileged eldest son of two professionals, Terri Canessa was highspirited, spoiled and Schlichenmeyer a little wild. A group of Irish Christian brothers finally tamed him, proving to him he was a leader At 16, Canessa was a rugby star; at 18, he was a member of the Uruguayan national rugby team, though his passion was medicine. He was, in fact, a 19-year-old second-year medical student on the afternoon of Oct. 13, 1972, when the plane in which he was riding crashed into a remote part of the Andes.

Of the 40-odd passengers and crew aboard, many were killed instantly or died soon after the crash. The cold was relentless and, because they figured someone would be looking for them, those that remained “began to transform into a single organism” as they worked together to stay warm and hydrated. Survivors devised ways to keep one another alive through clever inventions, repairs of damaged equipment and adaptations of the meager items not destroyed in the crash. Canessa became the group’s doctor.

Three cousins took unofficial leadership roles.

But as days turned to weeks and supplies slowly disappeared, weaker individuals died, one by one, of starvation.

Canessa only hints about who first suggested they “nourish ourselves with the bodies” of those who died, but it was a “simple and audacious” idea that sustained the remaining survivors until they were rescued.

Indeed, audacity was mandatory: More than two months after the crash,

by Dr. Roberto Canessa and Pablo Vierci c.2016, Atria Books $26 291 pages Canessa and his friend, Nando, undertook a daring trek that took them across sheer ice, on tiny ledges above crevasses, and down avalanche-prone snow to a valley of flowers.

It was there where, weak and barely alive, they found the man who rescued them.

Today, Canessa is a renowned pediatric cardiologist in Montevideo, which may seem like a tenuous tie to his early story. Part of the explanation for that incongruity comes in chapters written by patients and thankful parents of children he’s saved – chapters that might be more compelling, were they not so repetitive or frequent.

As it is, because they’re too similar and too many, those outside testimonials lose their effect.

Instead, what moves this book along is the re-telling of the tragedy, woven between intimate chapters on how it deeply affected the way Canessa lives his life.

That almost-44-year-old endurance tale is a nail-biter which, paired with insight from Canessa, his father and other rescuers, offers up the best part of this book, bringing the grueling story to a new generation unfamiliar with the Andes crash and updating it for those who remember it well.

And if you fall into either category, ignoring “I Had to Survive” could be impossible.

Robbie’s Hope Foundation hosts first adult-oriented event Parents’ night out to raise funds and awareness

It’s just as important for adults to be informed and aware of mental health issues that face today’s youth face as teens are.

Adults, as well as teens, need to know what resources are available, how to exercise early intervention strategies, the right questions to ask and the warning signs a youth may show if he or she is facing mental health issues, said Becky Asbury of Golden, co-chair of Evening of Hope.

Adults “are a big part of the equation” for solving mental health issues among our youth, Asbury said.

To get adults more involved, Robbie’s Hope Foundation is hosting its first adult-oriented program called Evening of Hope.

It’s a fundraiser and awarenessraiser, Asbury said.

Her hope is that everyone leaves more informed on what Robbie’s Hope Foundation is doing to solve mental health issues and teen suicides, and knowing that they can make a difference.

“Our communities are becoming more aware of suicide and mental health issues,” said Kari Eckert, executive director of Robbie’s Hope Foundation. “People are ready to put effort into solving this issue.”

Robbie’s Hope Foundation is a Jeffco-based organization — 501c3 status currently pending — that exists to destigmatize mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, among teens and prevent suicidal thoughts before they occur. Its goal to cut the teen suicide rate in half by the year 2028.

Founded by Kari and Jason Eckert,

the foundation got its start following the Oct. 11, 2018, death of their 15-yearold son Robbie. He was a sophomore at Lakewood High School — a student who got good grades and was actively involved with swimming, tennis and golf.

With a tagline of “It’s Okay Not to Be Okay,” the foundation empowers teens with the tools and resources they need for student-led activism.

One way it empowers teens is through the foundation’s HOPEgroups, which stands for Hold On Pain Ends.

“HOPEgroups provide them (teens) with a safe place where they can be open with one another,” Kari Eckert said. “These are teen-led conversations.”

Currently there are five HOPEgroups in the metro area — one in Golden, one in Palmer Lake and three in Denver. Golden’s group has an average attendance of about 60 youths between the ages of 13-18 that represent about 11 different middle and high schools in the west metro area, Kari Eckert said. They meet twice a month for about an hour and a half.

So far, “all the focus has been on the kids,” Kari Eckert said. Evening of Hope “is an opportunity for the parents to get involved.”

In the case that a teen confides in one of his or her friends about suicidal thoughts or another mental health issue, who can that friend go to for help, Asbury asked.

Teens don’t have the same resources — a trusted network of matured people, for example — that adults do, Asbury added.

Mental health issues is a crisis our community is facing, Asbury said.

“The more we can support organizations that are trying to understand, inform others and prevent teen suicide and mental health issues,” Asbury said, “in my opinion, the better.”

2019 Good News Breakfast Honorees Our 2019 theme, “Unsung Heroes…Not All Heroes Wear Capes,” honors individuals and organizations that make significant contributions to improve the quality of life of others in Jefferson County. Our honorees have gone above and beyond to make a difference in the community and inspire others to give back.

All Comforting Things A group of about 20 heroes wield knitting needles, crochet hooks, needles and thread bringing comfort, encouragement and kindness to community members in need. Since 2014, the members of All Comforting Things have handcrafted more than 18,000 items including quilts, hats, mittens, pillowcases, scarves, toys and art to people facing adversity. More than 7,000 of these items have been donated to Jeffco Human Services for distribution to those they serve.

Frank and Rita Merrill, Chuck and Karen Hoy For more than 20 years, Frank and Rita Merrill, along with Chuck and Karen Hoy, have supported, run, organized, and championed the Shepherd’s Pantry in Lakewood’s River Church. The food bank, open the third Saturday of every month, serves about 400 people, many of whom are elderly, disabled or veterans.

Clients are treated with respect as they receive a week’s worth of food and a hot breakfast. The Merrills and Hoys are the backbone of this community resource, organizing volunteers who help stock shelves, purchase supplies, and make and serve breakfast. Additional responsibilites include receiving donations, storing and transporting food, and purchasing additional items as needed.

Baker Concrete Baker Concrete has donated more than $30,000 in materials and labor to ACRES Farm at Warren Tech. In addition, company employees dedicated an entire week, called Rock Week, to teach the students in the Building Trades and STEM programs how to set, estimate, form and pour concrete. Their contribution is helping to build an outdoor classroom at the farm, a cleaning station for the harvested vegetables and numerous walkways on the property. The company has set aside additional time to work with Warren Tech students in the future.

Gary Harty, Cycling Without Age After heading up the Lakewood Bicycle Advisory Team, Gary Harty launched the Cycling Without Age initiative in 2017. Volunteers, called pilots, provide rides in a three-wheel trishaw to older adults who are no longer able to ride a bicycle.

Cycling Without Age is an international program. The Lakewood chapter partnered with the city, Eaton Senior Living Communities and the Residences at Creekside to acquire three trishaws through grants. Since the program began, Harty has dedicated 745 hours to the project, including training 30 pilots who have provided more than 350 rides while improving intergenerational interactions and social connectivity.

Jeffco Eats About one-third of Jefferson County students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch because of poverty, but on weekends they sometimes go hungry. Jeffco Eats provides food for weekends and summer break to ensure that no child misses a meal. Since the program began in 2017, volunteers have delivered food to more than 40 Jeffco schools, apartments, recreation centers and parks. Last year, volunteers provided 151,666 meals and 182,000 pounds of food to families in need. This program enables families to have food year round.

Adria Lucerna, Fairmount Elementary School Parent Adria Lucerna is a parent champion of Fairmount Elementary School. Her goal was to provide safe routes along a no-shoulder, busy, two-lane road near the school. She secured the infrastructure and outreach grant to fund a sidewalk to the school. Lucerna involved fifth graders to study and recommend corridor solutions to local government. She pursued additional resources to complete safe

Maddie Nichols Maddie Nichols has served the Lakewood area schools in myriad ways, from volunteering with the Molholm Elementary PTA, to decorating Jefferson High School for its after-prom party. A long-time advocate for the city of Lakewood, she worked on the Molholm Plan. As co-chair of the Two Creeks Neighborhood Organization, she helped clean up Lakewood Gulch and worked with Metro West Housing on a residential project. Nichols has been active with the 20-Minute Walk Study, 40 West Arts District and West Colfax Community Association. She participated in the W-Line Light Rail design and served on the ArtLine Champions Committee. She received the West Colfax Legend award in 2017 and works on beautification of West Colfax. In conjunction with the city’s strategic plan, she worked on Lakewood’s sustainability plan.

Pastor Drew Ross, Bethlehem Lutheran Church and School Pastor Drew Ross is the catalyst for and champion of the Living Well Shower Trailer, a mobile shower unit serving the homeless population in Jeffco. Started through a grant, the program has grown to include dental and medical services as well as mobile laundry facilities. The homeless can access haircuts and showers throughout Jefferson County. Without donations, partnerships and volunteers, the program would not be possible or successful. Last year, the program provided approximately 2,200 showers. The goal is to restore dignity to the homeless with hot showers, clean clothes and love.

Rotary Club of Golden The Rotary Club of Golden has worked with Welchester Elementary for the last three years to provide materials and training for teachers in a mental health initiative to establish Cool Down Corners in their classrooms. The corners provide a place for students to retreat for brief periods of time when they are feeling angry, sad or frustrated. The corners are stocked with materials designed to help students learn self-regulation skills, and return to class without distracting other learners. Being expanded to more schools, this project has positively affected 300 students in 12 classrooms.

Glenn Sanger Glenn Sanger has volunteered with Jefferson County 4-H for 25 years, donating hundreds of hours to support youth as if each was a member of his own family.

He mentors young people year round, teaching life skills as he provides support and knowledge to help students complete their 4-H projects. He takes the time to welcome new members and their families. Thanks to his volunteer work, Sanger has enabled the Jefferson County 4-H livestock program to flourish and grow.

Neal Browne is the Media Director for the Courageous Faces Foundation, which empowers people with rare and severe medical conditions to live the best life possible.

He has served on the Community First Foundation Board and the Exempla Healthcare Systems Board of Directors, and currently serves on the CASA Advisory Board.

For 23 years, he served as a reporter and anchor for 9NEWS, the NBC affiliate in Denver. In addition to general assignment, he covered politics including the Colorado Legislature and several national political conventions. He was nominated for several Emmys and was awarded two, both for reporting.

He broke the story nationally of Gary Hart’s exit from the 1988 presidential race.

Browne formed his own company in 1999, Neal Browne & Associates, and a subsidiary, TouchPoint Video, which help businesses and non-profit organizations tell their story more effectively, more memorably and more compellingly. He lives in south Jefferson County with his wife and is the stepfather of four adult children and three grandchildren.

Hall of Fame – Felix Cook Felix W. Cook, Sr. earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Southern University, Baton Rouge and a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Denver. He served in the U.S. Army with one year in Korea.

During his career, Cook served as Director of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Technical Service Center, an 800-person organization composed of professional scientists, researchers and engineering personnel.

Now retired, Cook has served on numerous state boards including Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors; State Judicial Performance Review Commission

Cook participated in a mission trip to Arusha, Tanzania, to help construct a girl’s dormitory for the Olmotonyi Girls’ Secondary School. He has built Habitat for Humanity homes for residents in the Denver Metropolitan Area. During a mission trip to Jackson County, Kentucky, he remodeled homes for struggling Appalachian families.

Keynote Speaker – Drew Robertson Drew Robertson, proud father of two and founder and president of Mattersville, grew up in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. After moving to Colorado, he pursued a career in solar energy design and engineering as a way to help people save money.

His interests in sustainable living began to flourish.

After the loss of one of his dearest friends, a veteran, to a PTSD-related incident, Robertson founded Mattersville. His goal was to create communities for men and women who suffer from PTSD and homelessness.

“When learning about Mattersville, people will also learn how within the veteran communities, homelessness and joblessness are symptoms of PTSD. When we address the cause head-on, healing and reparations can begin for our veterans,” says Robertson.

Colorado has one of the largest homeless populations and suicide rates among veterans in our country. Robertson’s hope is that through a network of sustainable tiny home communities across the state those numbers will decrease dramatically.

Robertson has spent years working on launching a tiny homes community in or around Jefferson County. He will announce his plans at the Good News Breakfast.

Rally pushes for wage equality across genders Advocates gather in support of Equal Pay for Equal Work bill

Three additional months is how much extra time the National Committee on Pay Equity states that it takes the average woman in a fulltime job to earn the same amount the average man in a full-time job earns in a year.

“Colorado women and their families deserve better,” said Catherine Shea, president of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association. “Pay inequity will not end unless employers take intentional steps to address it.”

On April 2, recognized as 2019’s Equal Pay Day, advocates gathered on the steps of the Colorado Capitol to show support for SB 19-085, the Equal Pay For Equal Work Act bill.

The bill, which is currently making its way through the state Legislature, would implement measures to prevent pay disparities.

The bill passed in the Colorado State Senate by a 20-to-14 vote on April 4, and now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.

The bill’s prime sponsors are Sen. Brittany Pettersen, D-Lakewood; Sen. Jessie Danielson, D-Wheat Ridge; Rep. Janet Buckner, D-Aurora; and Rep. Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez, D-Denver.

“Women are going to have leverage that they’ve never had before,” said Pettersen, during the rally.

The biggest pieces of the bill, she added, involve changing the conversation with employers.

According to a news release, the

Women, and even more so women of color, are forced to accept lower wages, are discouraged from talking about wages and negotiating for higher pay and do not have resources readily available to determine that they experiencing wage discrimination to begin with, said Ashley Panelli, a community organizer with 9to5, a national grassroots membership organization that advocates for women’s equality.

“But the more we speak out about workplace discrimination, the easier it will become to remedy,” Panelli said.

SB 19-085, she added, is a step in the right direction to ensure that all women are recognized as equally contributing members of society.

This bill is for the future for all Colorado women, Danielson said.

“It’s time to act now,” she said at the rally. “Not only is it the right thing to do, it will put billions back in the Colorado economy and help Coloradans save for the future.”

‘Helping a brother make a last wish come true’

or Christian Redman, the Last Ride fulfilled a heartfelt wish: A celebration with his daughter in Kentucky on her 18th birthday, a reunion with fellow 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment troopers and veterans, and a chance to once more sink his toes in the sand of a Key West beach.

“I just want to thank everybody who hleped me — I really appreciate it,” said Redman, 51, a Parker resident who is dying of the late-stage colon cancer he has fiercely fought for three years. His doctors in November gave him eight to 16 months to live. “I never will forget it.”

Rocky Cuda, a retired sergeant from the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment — an Army unit also known as the Blackhorse Regiment — came up with the idea for a kind of make-a-wish last ride for Blackhorse troopers with Redman as the inaugural event. He called it Maverick’s Last Ride after Redman’s call sign from his Army days.

The plan was for a caravan-style road trip leaving March 4 from Parker to Louisville, Kentucky, so Redman could celebrate with his daughter on her 18th birthday on March 10, then on to the Daytona Beach bike week with the final stop in Key West. There would be other stops along the way where Blackhorse troopers and veterans, on motorcyles or in cars, could

man’s ongoing medical bills. As of March 31, about $10,400 had been raised.

The Last Ride didn’t happen exactly as planned: Redman was too sick to make the road trip. But he was able to fly to Louisville to be with his daughter on her birthday. He returned home for doctor appointments, then flew to Key West on March 15, where he spent five days with Cuda, Simpson and several other Blackhorse veterans.

Simpson drove the route, meeting Redman in Louisville and Key West, and other Blackhorse veterans in Kansas City, Missouri, and Atlanta.

“This is what it was all about, helping a brother make a last wish come true,” Cuda said. “We didn’t really know if it would all work out.

However, we believed in each other and we believed that our Blackhorse family would come together and make a dream come true for one of our own …”

Since his return from Key West, Redman has been struggling. Doctors have found more cancer in his liver.

He’s facing more radiation and chemo treatments.

The trip, he said, was a true blessing: “Key West was beautiful as always. It was good to see my brothers, and the weather was fantastic. It’s just a different atmosphere down there — something’s always going on. It helped me forget that I was sick for a little while.”

And, Redman said, “I did sink my toes in the sand.”

Social etiquette fit for a queen JDW Westside Cotillion offers communication skills and confidence for youth

On the chance that she would ever get to visit with a queen, it is important to 9-year-old Elena Perrotto that she knows some formal dance moves and proper dining manners.

However, these are just two examples of social etiquette skills that Elena Perrotto and her brother William, 11, will learn in their upcoming JDW Westside Cotillion classes.

“More and more people today rely on digital communication,” said Vicki Buchmann, chair and program manager for JDW Westside Cotillion.

But “the ability to communicate faceto-face is just as important today as it was in the past.”

Using traditional dances — fox trot and waltz, for example — as a means to breakdown social inhibitions and build confidence, JDW Westside Cotillion educates youths to communicate more effectively while promoting personal growth, confidence and character, Buchmann said.

“How you conduct yourself in public tells a lot about your character,” she said. “Our hope is that the skills they (youths) learn will carry on for the

Elena and William Perrotto of Broomfield will be return students when the JDW Westside Cotillion classes begin this April. Both are most excited for the dance aspect of the course, but William notes the value of having what he calls “genuine manners.” These are how to greet people and properly shake hands, for example, he said.

“Later on in life, you’ll know how to respect people,” William Perrotto said, “and prove yourself to them for their respect.”

Elena and William are at the age when they’re becoming more social in life, both among their peers and other adults, their dad Joe Perrotto said.

Cotillion “is a learning experience for them,” Joe Perrotto said. “It teaches them to be respectful to all people, no matter where they are.”

It seems that as technology advances, people are losing the essence of human communication, said Emily Perrotto, William and Elena’s mom.

But social skills are still a wonderful gift to have, she added.

“Cotillion brings us back to the basics,” Emily Perrotto said. “It reminds kids that it’s normal to have social interaction with others, and not always hide behind a screen.”

Arrests made after assault on Arvada officer STAFF REPORT

Five teenagers were arrested April 7 following an incident that left a citizen and officer injured.

On April 6 at approximately 12:22 a.m.

Arvada Police were dispatched to the area of W. 68th Avenue and Beech Street in reference to a hazard involving traffic signs, including a stop sign, in the roadway. A citizen called in the hazard and stayed on the scene until an officer arrived.

While an officer was removing the debris from the roadway, a chemical device was thrown in close proximity to the officer.

The chemical reaction created a gas which injured the officer and a citizen. The officer was immediately transported to the hospital and has since been released. The citizen was treated on scene with minor injuries.

David Snelling, detective with the Arvada Police said they believe the signs were strategically placed in the road to create an event that would al-

low a police officer to be targeted.

Within 24 hours of the incident, Maxwell McCann, 17, Braiden Ulmer, 18, Isaac Koch, 18, and Gavin Dawson, 18, along with an unnamed juvenile were all booked on several charges of felony assault and possession and use of explosives.

Arvada Police said they will not release the components of the chemical bomb “to avoid repeated incidents.” They are also withholding the name of the officer injured.

The case has been turned over to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

“I’m grateful that our officer and community member were not more seriously injured although we do not yet know the long term affects of this attack on them,” said Arvada Police Chief Link Strate. “We know that this attack on one of our officers is not representative of our community. We appreciate the support of our community and we take their safety and our officers’ safety very seriously.”

Emergency responders work to rescue a hiker that fell about 30 feet in Clear Creek Canyon on April 5. Rescuers say the hiker was brought to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Five rescue agencies responded to a hiking incident in Clear Creek Canyon on April 5.

Social media posts by Golden Fire-Rescue state that a hiker fell about 30 feet near Tunnel 2, which is west of Golden on U.S. 6. The hiker’s friend called 911 at about 11 a.m.

The hiker was conscious and breathing at the time rescue crews on

scene, according to Golden Fire and Rescue’s spokeswoman.

A rope system and drone were used to rescue the hiker.

U.S. 6 remained closed until the rescue was complete.

Responding agencies were the Golden Fire Department, West Metro Fire Rescue, the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office, American Medical Response, Jeffco Open Space and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

LAKEWOOD — George Washington kept slamming the door on Green Mountain on the baseball field Tuesday, April 2.

The Patriots was able to cling to a one-run lead despite facing plenty of danger in the final three innings on the Rams’ home field. Green Mountain (3-7 record) had the game-tying run at third base with less than two outs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

However, George Washington (5-3, 3-3 in 5A/4A Denver Prep League) escaped each scoring threat to hang on for a 6-5 victory.

“George Washington played a clean game,” Green Mountain coach Brad Kidwell said. “We had a lot of traffic on the bases and they got out of it.”

Senior Tyler Ray nailed down the victory on the hill for the Patriots.

Green Mountain junior Braydon Schulz laced a line-drive single in

the bottom of the seventh inning to put a pair of Rams on the bases with no outs. Ray successfully got out of the jam by fielded a sacrifice bunt and then got back-to-back strikes to end the game win the tying run at third and winning run at second.

“Facing a non-conference team that we haven’t beaten in a while we just wanted to come out here and grind with them. We knew they were a good ball club,” said Ray referring to Green Mountain defeating George Washington 3-0 last year. “For us it was about putting more runs up and playing solid defense behind our pitchers. It felt good to get this one.”

George Washington did its offensive damage in the first and fifth innings, putting up a three spot in both frames. Senior Michael Guber delivered RBIs in both innings for the Patriots.

Green Mountain junior Danny Wisor hammered a solo home run to start the bottom of the fifth inning to pull the Rams within a run, but it

would be the final run of the game.

“I think that was a winnable game that we probably should have won,” said Green Mountain senior Michael Busse, who had a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning.

Busse also walked and was hit by a pitch. It has been a long road for the senior third baseman. A hip injury his junior season would eventually require surgery. Then this winter a serious illness hospitalized Busse.

“We were pretty sure that I wouldn’t play again,” Busse said.

“To be out here is an absolute blessing.”

Kidwell is optimistic his team can turn things around during Class 4A Jeffco League play.

“There is more heart on this team and they are working hard,” Kidwell said. “We just have to figure out how to win. I like the future of the program. We just have to put it together.”

ocal products Mallory Pugh and Lindsey Horan, members of the U.S. women’s soccer team, joined an impressive assembly of people on April 3 when they each accepted Denver Challenge Coins and personalized street signs from Denver mayor Michael B. Hancock.

A Denver Challenge Coin is the equivalent of the key to the city.

Only 30 people OVERTIME have received a Challenge Coin from Hancock and some of those people include Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Others who have been Jim Benton honored include John Elway, former Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Chauncey Billups, Stevie Wonder and local military servicemen and women and firefighters.

Pugh, the 20-year-old who played with Real Colorado and for three seasons at Mountain Vista High School, is the youngest American to play and score as an 18-year-old in the Olympic Games. She plays for the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League.

Horan, 24, played club soccer for the Colorado Rush and graduated from Golden High school, but did not play soccer for the school. She was the first American female soccer player to sign a professional contract directly out of high school with Paris Saint-Germain.

She has played pro soccer since 2012 and is currently on the Portland Thorns’ roster.

Pugh and Horan were in town with the national team for a friendly match on April 4 against Australia at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The game was one of the countdown matches for the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer.

The Americans rallied to notch a 5-3 victory and Pugh came in as a sub and scored twice to spark the USA win.

Ralston Valley first win ever over Golden in boys lacrosse

ARVADA — The final save of the night for Ralston Valley sophomore goalie Calvin Doucette might have very well been the biggest save of his lacrosse career.

“It all came down to that final moment,” Doucette said of the final pointblank shot by Golden junior Kevin Mulligan on Friday, April 5, at the North Area Athletic Complex. “I just had to stay patient, know where it was going and got a lucky save on it.”

The save just before the clock expired in the fourth quarter preserved a 4-3 victory for Ralston Valley over Golden, then ranked No. 6 in the CHSAANow. com Class 4A boys lacrosse rankings. It was the first win for the Mustangs’ thirdyear varsity program against the rival Demons.

“It’s huge for us,” Doucette said. “To beat Golden after losing to them last year, coming back tonight and fighting through to the end. Everyone contributed.”

While it took a team effort for Ralston Valley (5-2, 0-1 in 5A Jeffco League), Doucette was clearly the difference in the mind of Ralston Valley coach Nick Lewis.

“Calvin was unreal,” Lewis said. “He is a special, special kid. When he is on, he is on and it’s tough to get it by him. I think the story tonight is Calvin Doucette.”

Lewis reflected back to last season when Doucette got his first varsity start in net against Golden.

“I had been looking for it all game,” Kellogg said of his 12th goal of the season.

“We executed on offense as a unit.”

The win was a good bounce-back victory for the Mustangs after dropping their conference opener earlier in the week against Lakewood.

“A lot of kids know each other, so there is that cross-town thing,” Lewis said. “We knew it was going to be a fight. Golden played great. It was truly a gritty team win.”

Ralston Valley got another huge test when it faced Erie at on Tuesday, April 9, after press deadline.

The Mustangs return to 5A Jeffco League action on Friday, April 12, against Dakota Ridge at Trailblazer Stadium.

Golden (2-5) won’t begin its conference place in the Class 4A Foothills League until April 17 when they host Englewood at NAAC. Ray believes George Washington can content for the conference title in the Denver Prep League.

“We want to prove we can win that division (Denver Prep League) too,” Ray said.

“At Swedish, we offer a full spectrum of cardiac care with quality and compassion” Mathias said. “We are looking to continually expand and improve what we offer cardiac patients from the emergency heart attack patient to a complex heart surgery, we believe in caring from our patients from beginning to end.”

Mathias said Swedish is taking cardiac care to the next level, with services expanding and growing in the following areas: • More experts: With a focus on treating patients in a timely manner, the cardiology and vascular team has added eight new doctors and five advanced practice providers. Mathias said the focus remains on collaboration, giving patients individual, tailored treatment plans.

• Electrophysiology: Electrophysiologists (EP) help diagnose and treat conditions involving the heart’s electrical activity. These include arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats) such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia and atrial flutter. Swedish currently provides a wide range of minimallyinvasive EP treatments including: • Cardiac ablation, which reduces or

eliminates arrhythmias and restores regular rhythm • Implantable pacemakers or cardioverter defibrillators • Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) – PVD can impact a patient’s quality of life, causing the arteries and blood vessels outside the heart to become blocked or narrow. Those suffering from PVD often complain of extreme pain in the legs and arms. At Swedish, PVD experts use traditional and minimally-invasive surgeries to correct the problem.

• Robotics: As advances in technology continues, Swedish Medical Center has made it a priority to find options for patients that are less invasive. Swedish Medical Center is currently the only

cardiothoracic robotic-assisted surgical program in Colorado. “We want patients home and healing as soon as possible,” Mathias said. “If we can do that with cutting-edge technology, we are excited to do so.”

Mathias said using robotics equipment, it allows Swedish to conduct robotic-assisted procedures in the following areas: Mitral Valve Repair Tricuspid Valve Repair Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation Intracardiac Tumors Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Cardiology intervention for oncology patients: Mathias said this is an area Swedish Medical Center is continually expanding to help all patients who are currently being treated for cancer.

“In general, oncology patients are receiving medications and treatment that over time can damage their heart,” Mathias

said. “Swedish cardiologists are working with oncology doctors to assess and treat patients early. Collaborating for early intervention means catching the issues before the damage is done.”

More surgical suites: With the expectation of offering cardiac care to more patients, Mathias said Swedish is adding more space, including more clinic space, and additional heart-surgery operating space with advanced imaging technology that is used to guide complex surgeries, such as those performed in the heart and legs.

“We are looking at all areas in cardiac care and working to grow our services,” Mathias said. “Our continued goal is to expand our role as a regional cardiac referral center. We believe in quick access to high-quality care. We want to ensure we are providing that for all of our patients.”
