Action Center modifies services to limit virus exposure

I believe this world needs a lot of help, and I think we can make a difference. I’m just a mom — a mom that can make a difference. I have been involved in the community by helping the youth apply for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), advocating for Head Start and more.

The kids are kids once in their life. I used to sit as president for the Rocky Mountain Head Start’s policy council.

Head Start helps children and their families gear up for kindergarten, and it provides family support. I got to go speak in Washington D.C. I was

so proud of myself that I could speak out for the kids.

Health helper I’ve also helped women set up appointments through 9Health Fairs.

9Health Fairs do blood screenings, health education and information booths, health and wellness screenings and more. I speak Spanish, and I’ve helped at the events by being a translator. It’s important for me to help women and to empower women to be in control of their own health and everything about themselves.

I like to empower women to love themselves, because if you don’t love yourself, you can’t expect everyone to give you the help that you need.

The Action Center has decided to modify its services to help manage ongoing concerns around the threat of COVID-19, and the center is accepting only non-perishable food donations at this time.

Starting March 16, the Action Center will modify its operations to limit exposure to COVID-19. Until regular operations can resume, the center is offering drive-thru services, providing food and mail services, and trying to meet as many other urgent needs as possible.

“We have decided to modify the level of services we provide in order to protect the well-being of our participants, volunteers, and staff while maintaining critical services for our neighbors in need,” Action Center Executive Director Pam Brier said in a news release.

An appointment will still be required to receive Action Center services. Those in need should call to schedule at 720-215-4850.

Drive-thru services will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, March 16. Then for the rest of the week and going forward, drive-thru service hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays starting the week of March 16.

Additional services such as clothing, household, and personal care items, and on-site partner referrals are suspended until further notice. The Action Center has closed its main program services building to contain the exposure participants, volunteers, and staff face during regular operations.

Lakewood Police have made an arrest for the death of a 64-yearold man after he was found suffering from gunshot wounds near the entrance to his home.

According to a release from police, officers were called the 8100 block of West 12th Avenue just before 11 p.m. on March 9 for reports of a shooting. The call came from family members of Robert Gene Steige, who reportedly found him outside his home with gunshot wounds.

Steige was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigations led police to a 17-year-old male suspect who was taken into police custody for the homicide on March 12. Since the suspect is a juvenile, Lakwood Police has not released the male’s name as of press time.

Our Newest Listing Is a Case Study on How to Achieve Net Zero Energy at Home

Regular readers of this column know my commitment to sustainability. Our office is Net Zero Energy, with our 20kilowatt solar PV system providing all the energy to heat, cool and power our office plus charge our four electric cars, while also providing free charging to the public. My home is also solar powered, satisfying all our electrical needs, although we still have natural gas service.

Readers may also recall me saying that the most affordable way to invest in sustainable features is to buy a home which already has them, since the investment in sustainability pays for itself over time but rarely returns what you paid for it in the resale value of your home.

The home I just listed at 6187 Terry Way in Arvada’s Sunrise Ridge subdivision is a good example of that. The seller, like me, is fanatical about sustainability and has invested over $80,000 in solar power, insulation, daylighting, and other improvements, but the listing price of $450,000, while higher than for a comparable home with a higher monthly energy bill, recovers for the seller only a fraction of her investment.

Meanwhile, whether or not you are interested in purchasing a terrific 2-bedroom patio home, let me use it as an example of the ways you can invest in sustainable features for your own home.

I’ve written in the past about Steve Steven’s 1970s brick ranch which he

took beyond Net Zero. I did a narrated video tour of it when it was on the annual tour of solar homes, and it took over 40 minutes to describe all its sustainable features!

This home, however, is a 2002 frame-built tract home that was constructed with above-average but below-optimum energy and insulation features, leaving plenty of room for improvement.

And improve it the seller did!

(You’ll understand why, knowing that she is Steve Stevens’ significant other!)

What follows is a run-down of the improvements which brought this home’s electrical bill down to the cost of its connection to Xcel Energy’s grid. In fact, the home is beyond Net Zero Energy to Net Carbon Positive, meaning that its excess electrical generation more than compensates for the natural gas being used for cooking and heating. On top of that, the seller charges her electric car in the home’s 2-car garage.

Here are the sustainability highlights: First, of course, a 4.4-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system was installed on the roof. Having done that, the next tasks involved reducing electrical demand so that 4.4kW of solar would be sufficient.

Of course, all incandescent, fluorescent and CFL light bulbs were replaced with LED bulbs and fixtures. That alone reduced the electrical load substantially.

the joists, but they don’t enclose that fiberglass in plastic. Cold winter air easily infiltrates through loose fiberglass insulation. It’s the plastic sheeting which stops that air. And closedcell foam sprayed between the joists further inhibits air infiltration.

Next, the windows and patio door were replaced with Energy Star-rated Champion products. Improving the windows further was the installation of insulating Hunter Douglas blinds.

Those are the improvements which made the home more energy efficient, bringing it past New Zero Energy. Other improvements worth noting which add value to this home are the large deck with seating on the sunny south side of the house, the beautiful oak Murphy bed with wall storage in the guest bedroom which allows the bedroom to be used as an office, and the 240-Volt wiring in the garage to provide EV charging.

Since this is a “paired home,” the party wall already had double-wall construction with insulation which reduced the transmission of noise between the units, but my seller added a third wall which consumed 5 inches on the her side of the party wall, into which cellulose insulation was blown, creating an even better sound barrier.

Next, all the appliances, including the central A/C unit, were replaced with high efficiency Energy Star-rated models. In the case of the kitchen appliances, they are all stainless steel.

At this point, the electrical efficiency was pretty much maxed out, so attention was given to reducing the natural gas load for heating the home.

Additional cellulose insulation was blown into the attic, bringing it up to an R-100 rating — more than twice what you’ll find in the typical production home. We have a picture of this home after a snow storm, showing the snow melted off the roofs of neighboring homes but not off this home’s roof — clear evidence of good attic insulation.

The rim joist (accessible because the basement is unfinished) was insulated to R-50. This area of the house, I’ve found, is the most neglected area of any house when it comes to insulation. Yates Oppermann, a Lakewood resident who has a daughter in third grade at Kendrick Lakes Elementary School, wasn’t surprised when human remains were found at a construction site for the new school building.

Oppermann works in environmental planning and has worked on infrastructure projects in the past.

“When you’re doing work like this, it happens. It can be a recent event, it can be a historic event and sometimes, it can be a prehistoric event,” said Oppermann.

The questions yet to be answered: How old are the human remains, are and who do they belonged to.

Lakewood Police were notified of the remains by construction crews on Feb. 27 when they were discovered at 1350 S. Hoyt St. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office says while it is still investigating the remains, they appear to be

of “historic nature,” according to Gordon Johnson, deputy coroner for the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Darcy Wood, treasurer for the school’s PTA, said Lakewood Police told school administration that hand-cut nails were discovered at the site.

south of the area that is now Kendrick Lake Park and Kendrick Lakes Elementary.

One of the seven Kendrick children included Francis “Frank” C. Kendrick, who worked his first job with the engineering crew of the Denver-South Park Railroad. Following his first job, Frank went on to mine for a short time before turning to local farming.

He specialized in irrigation engineering and helped engineer the Ward Dich which runs from Bear Creek to Sheridan Boulevard.

Dave Frazier, the great grandson of Frank, said most of the Kendrick family is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Denver.

“It might have been that someone died, and they buried them on their land. Whoever’s remains were there were probably not from the Kendrick family,” said Frazier. “It will be interesting to see what they come up with.”

John Romero, a spokesperson for Lakewood Police, said as results from the remains become available, the department will have a clearer idea of what its dealing with and if an actual crime was committed.

“It is interesting. It is an interesting part of history for our neighborhood and community to know what was there prior to the school,” said Wood.

State says no sit-down service for restaurants, bars Confirmed cases in Colorado continue to rise; gyms, theaters, casinos close for a month

The wave of closings and cancellations in response to COVID-19 continued to grow in Colorado as the state lowered the maximum number of people that should gather in one place to 50. The next day, March 16, the City of Denver — and then the state itself — ordered restaurants and bars to stop sit-down service.

“To best protect public health, the Colorado Department of Health and Environment is recommending that Coloradans follow the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance released today,” the department said in a news release.

That guidance says for the next eight weeks, organizers should cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States.

Colorado’s total climbed to 160 confirmed cases of COVID-19 — the disease caused by a widespread coronavirus — and 20 were hospitalized as of March 16. More than 1,200 people had been tested at the state lab.

In the metro area, many cases were confirmed across Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties. Gov. Jared Polis said last week the state was “likely on the verge of a tipping point where we will see more community spread” of the virus.

Community spread can mean cases and outbreaks in areas where people became infected and the source is unknown. When it’s more widespread, it means cases and outbreaks in many communities where the virus is spread between people.

While the state government generally has stopped short of issuing a ban on large gatherings — instead sticking to giving “recommendations” — the City of Denver on March 16 ordered that all events of 50 people or more must be canceled or postponed for

Theaters — including movie and performance venues and concert halls — along with casinos and gyms are ordered to close under the same action. The time frame of the order can be extended.

Testing on move The state’s first community testing center for COVID-19 opened March 11, and it’s now planned to move to locations throughout Colorado.

After moving from its drive-up location in Denver’s Lowry neighborhood and reopening days later at the Denver Coliseum, the testing operation was to reopen in locations throughout the state — first focusing on Colorado’s mountain communities, which have seen some of the most rapid spread of COVID-19 in the state.

The Telluride area and Routt County are among the first targets for the test site this week, and after that, the state will identify its next location.

On March 17, the state will open a testing site outside Telluride that will serve about 100 high-risk patients who were pre-selected by health care providers as a priority, a state news release said. The site will not accept walk-up or drive-up patients.

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, first call a health care provider, clinic or hospital. The provider will give instructions on whether you need to be tested and on where to go to for care and testing.

If instructed to seek care, follow the precautionary advice of the medical provider before going into any health facility, the state advises.

Certain people are at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19, including older adults, especially those over 80; and those with chronic medical conditions such as heart, lung or kidney disease. Older adults who have chronic medical conditions are at the highest risk.

Illness can be severe and require hospitalization, but most individuals recover by resting, drinking plenty of liquids, and taking pain- and fever-reducing medications, according to the state.

Other advice from public health officials: • Stay home if you are sick.

• Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces such as desks, phones, doorknobs and rails.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s website.

The public can call 303-389-1687 or email COHELP@RMPDC.org for questions about the criteria to qualify for COVID-19 testing.

Private labs can do testing in Colorado as well, so Coloradans should call their doctors to see which option is best.

The criteria are meant to help health care providers decide whether to recommend testing, but people can still be tested as long as they have a doctor’s order for it, state officials said March 16.

The state Public Health Department is also sending testing kits to other mountain counties to increase testing capacity, the release said. The department received more testing kits from the CDC this week, which are being distributed around the state.

Lakewood grapples with COVID-19 City and others talk coronavirus

The city of Lakewood is taking steps to limit the spread of the pandemic, including the cancellation of a March 14 Ward 4 meeting and a March 16 Lakewood City Council study session due to the risks associated with COVID-19. Lakewood City Council said in a statement that it will continue to be available for residents by phone or email. Contact information for councilmembers can be found at Lakewood.org/CityCouncil or they can be contacted by emailing councilmembers@lakewood.org.

“As your elected officials, we want you to know that we continue to work daily on your behalf to keep Lakewood safe, healthy and prosperous,” Council’s statement reads. The city is assessing how to proceed with other upcoming meetings.

The Lakewood Advisory Commission’s scheduled retreat was also canceled as a precaution as well as older adult activities like a March 14 dance and potluck at the Clements Community Center and the city’s Recreation and Inclusive Services for Everyone’s bowling and dance events that were scheduled for March 14

and March 20.

All Lakewood recreation centers, and other cultural and recreational buildings will be closed until March 29. The Lakewood Police Department announced it will respond to priority calls — a situation where there is a crime in progress, whether a life is in danger or not.

Residents are encouraged to call 911 in those situations. In other scenarios, residents can submit a nonemergency police report at https:// www.lakewood.org/Government/ Departments/Police/PD-servicespermits-registrations/Submit-aNon-Emergency-Police-Report.

Municipal court will also be closed to the public until March 31.

Lakewood City Manager Kathy Hodgson said the city is focused on public safety and ensuring Lakewood provides essential services. An internal committee made up of representatives from every city department has been meeting for the past two weeks to consider COVID-19’s impact on the business and the employees of the city.

“There are so many (factors) to this, think about it. We have rec centers, we have (the Clements Community Center), we have places where we invite congregation,” said Hodgson.

“The governor and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) have cautioned the nation about holding events that encourage congregation

Lakewood has stayed in constant communication with Jefferson County Public Health, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the CDC through its emergency manager, who shares information with the city’s internal committee.

“It is constant communication. It is working extra hours,” said Hodgson.

“It is just more work. The regular work doesn’t go away. I think it is also important to not underreact and not overreact. The concern is that of community spread.”

Village at Belmar’s plan The Village at Belmar assisted living and memory care facility is home to around 170 seniors, a population who is vulnerable to COVID-19.

“We got a number of things that are in play right now that are meant to protect (Village at Belmar’s employees and residents) to be safe and healthy.

This is a very fluid situation,” said Tom Finley, owner and principal of

Village at Belmar. “It changes by the day and sometimes multiple times a day, but our teams are working nonstop to stay out in front of this to provide that foundational driver that we’re working on.”

Village at Belmar is conducting daily meetings with its leadership team to discuss the current status of COVID-19 in Colorado. The facility has also purchased additional medical and food supplies. Staff and associates of Village at Belmar are being reeducated on policies and procedures regarding diseases, and Finley said visitors are no longer allowed for the time being.

Digital signage has been placed throughout Village at Belmar as a reminder of how to properly wash hands. Employees are required to have their temperature taken and logged.

If they show any signs of a fever, they are required to go home and rest. Residents are also having their temperature taken and logged.

Finley said Village at Belmar is staying in close communication with its president and family members of residents about actions it is taking to prevent an episode of COVID-19.

“We’re making ourselves available. I do believe that staying out in front of this and being transparent is going to be key to navigating this moment in time we’re facing,” said Finley.

restrictions and those with other extenuating circumstances. Dining services will not be available,” Sweeting wrote.

Colorado Christian closing In a March 12 letter to the Colorado Christian University community, Donald Sweeting, the university’s president, announced it is transitioning all traditional undergraduate classes to online instruction, starting March 20.

“In addition, on-campus residence halls and dining services will close for the remainder of the semester at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 21. Traditional undergraduate students should plan to remain at home or return home for the remainder of the semester after spring break,” Sweeting wrote.

The school made the decision based off recommendations from its Coronavirus Response Team.

Lance Oversole, the university’s director of communications, said there haven’t been any confirmed or suspected cases of the virus on campus.

Sweeting added that all oncampus events are suspended starting March 20 until further notice. More information will be available about commencement, athletics and other campus events in the future, Sweeting said.

“On-campus accommodations will be provided to those who have no other option, including those from countries with travel

St. Anthony Hospital preparing Gianna Lisac, a spokesperson for St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, said the hospital is following the CDC guidelines to address patients with infectious diseases, including COVID-19.

St. Anthony Hospital is equipped with negative airflow rooms that are required to care for certain infections or viruses like COVID-19.

“In addition, we hold periodic drills to address these types of scenarios as part of our standard emergency preparedness activities,” said Lisac. Those drills include active shooter scenarios, mass casualty incidents, overall emergency preparedness and more.

In January, a patient who had previously visited Wuhan, China visited the hospital with a respiratory illness. Results of a COVID-19 test from the CDC came back negative for the patient.

For patient privacy reasons, the hospital and Jefferson County Public Health cannot comment on if any other patients who potentially have COVID-19 have been to St. Anthony Hospital.

Action Center modifies services The Action Center, a humanservices organization located in Lakewood, announced that begin-

ning March 16, it would modify its operations to limit exposure to COVID-19. The organization is planning to offer drive-thru services, provide food and mail services.

Appointments will be required as usual to receive services and can be made by calling 720-2154850. The drive through services will be available on March 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. During the week of March 16 and the week of March 23, service hours will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Services for clothing, household and personal care items and onsite partner referrals are suspended until further notice. The Action Center’s main program services building has been closed to the public.

The organization plans to only accept non-perishable food donations for the time being.

“We have decided to modify the level of services we provide in order to protect the well being of our participants, volunteers and staff while maintaining critical services for our neighbors in need,” Action Center Executive Director Pam Brier said in the release.

The Action Center also announced the cancelation of its Beautiful Junk Sale, a thrift sale fundraising event for the organization, originally scheduled for March 20 and 21.

Six months ago, John Ford, a Jeffco parent and president of teachers union Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA), said he wouldn’t have believed that one day, the entire district would transfer all schools to temporary online learning.

But as COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, has spread across Colorado — with more than 100 cases in Colorado as of March 14, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment— Jeffco Public Schools has done just that, closing students out of school buildings beginning the week of March 16.

The district has transitioned to a remote learning plan through at least March 20, during which students will receive online instruction at home. The week after is Jeffco’s regularly scheduled Spring Break.

scheduled, or if remote learning will continue instead.

Parents were asked to reach out to schools if their home does not have internet access and setting up a designated learning space for students at home.

The district also asked students to be sure that those issued a school electronic device — school-issued laptops or tablets — have them at home for remote learning.

Not all grades and schools in the district have received devices however. Not all households have reliable internet access. Households with those issues were also asked to contact their schools for assistance.

Figuring out the challenges For Ford and fellow educators, “the vast majority can get this work done without a whole lot of stress,” he said of the remote learning transition.

“Jeffco for a long time has had teachers who have been doing blended learning,” meaning they incorporate in-person and online learning, he said. Even so, “it is going to be difficult.”

The JCEA is working to ensure that as long as remote learning continues, students will have access to the tools they need, Ford said.

“We’re going to do our best to have an emotional foundation for mental health and stress, not only

cess to the internet, online learning could be a significant adjustment, said Nicole Dominic, whose daughter attends Mountain Phoenix Community School in Wheat Ridge.

At the school, “we don’t really do anything online,” she said, “so I think this is going to be difficult for everybody.”

Danielle Piper, whose two children also attend Jeffco elementary and middle schools, said she expects some instructional time to be lost because of the unfamiliar structure.

“I don’t think it’s going to be like a regular school day for them. I think the best we can ask for is they get a couple hours every day of online learning,” she said.

But she believes the online plan is likely the safest and best available.

“My kids and I are in the demographic that’s not as high risk, but we can still carry it and spread it to those in higher risk demographics,” she said. “We need to start flattening the curve and containing the contagion. It’s everyone’s responsibility to figure out.”

Community concerns Other potential challenges of the pandemic for parents and students are a loss of income and the need for childcare, Dominic said. Though the freelance home-stager hasn’t had any clients cancel on her yet, “it just feels scary. This is our busiest time for home sales,” she said. “We’re all worried of losing income.”

However, these challenges are exactly what’s brought her community

in the Applewood area together, she added.

“Everyone’s helping, everyone’s offering to take kids in during the day,” she said. “We have a lot of elderly neighbors, too, so there’s meal trains happening and we’re asking if we can go shopping for them.”

Jeffco parent Katie Winner also said she has seen numerous online efforts to ensure food security for families, particularly hourly workers who will not have an income if they are asked not to come into work. She pointed to groups like the Action Center in Lakewood, 8755 W. 14th Ave., which is hosting a food drive March 15 from 1-5 p.m.

Additionally, from March 16 through March 27, children up to age 18 can pick up free meals from Jeffco Public Schools at one of the district’s Grab and Go meal sites.

Meals will be served from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Sites include Arvada K-8, Colorow Elementary, Edgewater Elementary, Foothills Elementary, Lasley Elementary, Parr Elementary and Conifer High School.

Despite potential difficulties of school closures and online learning, Winner, Ford, Piper and Dominic agreed that the school district’s decision reflects it is prioritizing safety.

“Jeffco Schools made a really tough decision to keep communities safe. I feel for seniors canceling proms and musicals and sports, but it’s an unprecedented time,” Winner said. “We’ll figure out how we can get those moments back.”

Community is key to battling COVID-19

arents scrambling for child care options on the heels of temporary school closures.

Store shelves without essential goods, including bread, eggs and toilet paper.

Events and ball games canceled.

Libraries and recreation centers closed.

A collective feeling of tension and uncertainty as the world, right down to our own communities, suddenly has become a different place.

In little more than a week, Colorado went from no reported cases of COVID-19 to more than 100, a mark that was surpassed March 14. None

urges you to stay home, except to get medical care, even if you just suspect that you have been infected.

We applaud those of you who are taking crucial precautions, be it avoiding crowds, a self-quarantine or the necessity of carefully washing your hands with soap and water.

This is a time when community members need each other more than ever, and everyone must do his or her part.

So what can you do? Tips and recommendations are too numerous to list here — find much more at www.cdc.gov — but here are a few we would like to highlight:

Create a household plan. The CDC recommends having on hand a twoweeks’ supply of medications, food and other essentials. To that, we’ll add this: Don’t hoard.

Do ya’ hate so much that you can’t even share “Christ Our Savior” with the down trodden? Yes, the King James Bible is rife with contradictions, but Christianity is a philosophy that is, supposedly, based on love and compassion. When people use religion, any religion, as a tool to propagate discord in today’s polarized society it diminishes all of us. ave you been asked to work from home for a while, or even for the foreseeable future, given the uncertainly of the coronavirus? Even if this request comes as a surprise, you can work from home without a massive loss of productivity … or sanity.

For more than 15 years, I’ve had a home office, either as a remote worker or as a freelancer. And, even all those years ago, we held team and client meet- ALCHEMY ings via conference call, chatted on instant messenger, and swirled documents around the globe in cyberspace.

Then Skype appeared, and then Facetime, and and and … the opportuni- Andrea Doray ties to be virtually present today are nearly limitless.

We use Microsoft Teams at the global corporation where I work as a contractor, and I had my first experience with Zoom for a virtual writing workshop over the weekend. Sites such as SharePoint, Dropbox, Basecamp, Slack and any number of cloud providers make it easy to see, hear, talk, collaborate and work pretty much as if we’re all in the same room.

I’m something of an old hand at this, so I’ve accumulated the tools, the equipment and the mindset needed for this arrangement. Whether you plan on a

more permanent situation or the current state of affairs means you’re trying the work-remotely thing for the first time, here are some tips I’ve learned.

First, and perhaps most importantly, remember that the concept is work from home, not work as home. Resist the temptation to just keep going because it’s easy to do so. I admit, this is one principle that’s hard for me, because much of my own work-fromhomeness is as a freelancer, when flexibility to plug away at all hours is a benefit. But if you generally have set hours to be in your office, be sure to observe those from home, too.

In terms of your physical space, it’s obviously easier if you have a room for a home “office,” but even if you’re in this for just as long as you have to be, carve out a place specifically for your work. Usually this means a corner of a room or a patch of space where you’re likely to be undisturbed (but, on the other hand, if your toddler or your four-legged friend wanders in during videoconference calls, for example, you could become an Internet sensation.)

Seriously, though, any space that is appropriately quiet and appropriately private for your type of work is what you need. I once built a desk out of wire shelving on wheels that rolled in and out of a coat closet. Maintain good ergonomics, too … screen height, keyboard level and proper chair support

There’s an old Chinese curse that reads “May you live in interesting times.” We are, my friends, living in a Chinese curse.

Actually, given the origin of this pandemic, you could say the Chinese have cursed us to live inside a Chinese curse.

If you will forgive the syllogism.

Is it just me, or, given the demograph- HITTING ics of this, couldn’t HOME we just bubble wrap and then Saran Wrap every nursing home, and then just have everybody else report to an “infection station” so we can all get it, feel bad for a couple weeks, and then get on with things?

Of course, that’s ri- Michael Alcorn diculous. Saran Wrap doesn’t stick to anything long enough to be useful.

Still kidding. Obviously, that’s the absolute wrong thing to do, and I would never seriously suggest that.

My mother is right in the middle of the target demographic of this thing, and I want her to go on living for many years to come, so I’m perfectly happy with all the precautions that

I understood when he did not run

the CDC and the Governor are recommending and enforcing. But it is a very strange state of affairs. The last thing I said to my students this week was “I’ve been teaching for 29 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this.”

But, I am encouraged. Well, not by my little side errand to the grocery store yesterday—seriously, what does toilet paper have to do with this?

COVID-19 is not a laxative, people. But, I digress … I have been encouraged by the resilience and good humor of my peers, the leadership of the personnel at the building and district level right up to the Governor’s mansion, and the sober, restrained response of the students and parents I’ve come into contact with. If every segment of society deals with this the way the school community has, we’re going to be just fine.

In fact, maybe even better than fine.

A smart person in the leadership of Jeffco called this an opportunity: we now have to be engaged in a “competency-based” model of education, rather than a “time in seat” model. There is every possibility that some students will find that, absent all the distractions of a regular classroom, they can get their work done more efficiently.

And, if we find that their work is just as thorough and their learning just as meaningful as it always has been, As part of these communities, Colorado Community Media is trying to help by providing news and updates on our websites as soon as we get our hands on the latest information. And we’re putting these reports in front of our paywall for free access — this is critical, public safety information.

there may be a real opportunity to meld those two models going forward into something better.

Maybe it’s an opportunity for the economy, too. Maybe we’ll finally be motivated to bring some of our manufacturing and production capacity home (especially pharmaceuticals!), absorb some of the cost of decent labor, and be less dependent on China.

But the real opportunity is that we, as a people, remember who we are and finally rediscover the better angels of our nature. In fact, it’s already happening. Within two hours of the announcement that the NBA season was suspended, Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, had his people working on a plan to help out the ticket takers, the concession workers and the parking attendants who would not have a job to come to. One professional basketball player, Kevin Love, has announced that he is donating $100,000 to help

the support staff of his team make it through this. Other players are following suit.

Listen, if Mark Cuban can act to inspire the phrase “better angels of our nature,” then this can’t be that hard for the rest of us. If you have the means to run errands for an elderly person in your neighborhood, do so; if you have a friend who is alone, and whose life is far worse from social isolation, call them; wave to your neighbors, smile at the children; be smart, be careful, but, for God’s sake, be human.

It’s time to let our Better Angels off their tethers and let them fly!

Dale L Wilson passed away at the age of 81, on March 4, 2020, at Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, CO. Per Dale’s wishes, no funeral services will be held.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Harold Wilson and wife Patty; brother-in-law Morton Rundback. He is survived by wife of 31 years, Linda Wilson, of Lakewood, CO; aunt Alice Armbruster; sisters Charlotte Rundback and Barbara (Glenn) Leth; sister-in-law Lori (Steve) McColm; five children, GayLynn Brown; Denise (Rusty) Gift; James Wilson; Mary Kay (Douglas Lee) Wilson; Katherine (Roland) Moore.

December 15, 1938, to Charlie and Edith Wilson. His parents moved the Wilson family to North Platte, NE in the early 1940s. Dale attended Platte Valley School and graduated from North Platte High School in 1957. Dale married Lois Johnson in 1956. They had four children and divorced in 1968. In addition to farming, Dale worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 42 years.

He married Linda in 1989 and in 2000, he retired and moved to Denver.

Dale & Linda had a wonderful life together and enjoyed many exciting adventures, including travels to Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, England, Hawaii, and a road trip to Alaska.

Dale enjoyed working in his woodshop building furniture and many other useful and fun projects.

He loved and was loved deeply. His fun-loving nature will be missed by everyone who knew him. He had the gift of gab – turning strangers into instant friends. A celebration of Dale’s life will be held at a later date.

Though religion and tastes are changing, old instruments still command awe

utside Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Denver, the din of the city roars.

But inside the old church, a stone anachronism in a canyon of steel and glass, there is silence.

Organist Norm Sutphin walks into the cavernous sanctuary, lit only by the glow of sunshine through stained glass. He sits at a bench at the center of the altar, towered over by organ pipes stretching three stories high. He flips a switch, and a breath of air cuts the silence, just slightly.

Sutphin begins to play, and the sanctuary is suddenly alive with the majesty of Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in D Minor, the low notes rattling hymnals in the pews.

“This instrument can rouse emotions in the soul like few other things,” Sutphin said. “I appreciate its beauty, and I respect its power.”

The pipe organ is one of the largest in Denver, and perhaps the oldest. Built in 1888, it consists of 4,275 pipes in 82 sections. The smallest are just inches long. The tallest, low C, is 32 feet.

The Roosevelt organ, which Sutphin calls “one of the monuments of organ building in the West,” is one of many mighty pipe organs scattered around the Denver metro area.

But, Sutphin said, as traditional religious denominations and traditional church music decline, he is part of a diminishing family of organists who still command the power of the world’s largest musical instruments.

“I work very hard to make sure my performances are tight,” said Sutphin, who practices up to six days a week in preparation for Sunday. “It means a lot to people.”

Organs in history They still mean a lot to Rick Morel, a third-generation pipe organ builder and repairman. Morel is one of three remaining members of Morel and Associates, one of few remaining pipe organ repair shops in the Mountain West.

In an aging warehouse in north Denver, Morel cleans, tunes and repairs pipe organs, using decades-old tools, many of which are handmade.

Pipe organs are marvels of engineering, Morel said.

“The people who designed these were as smart as any computer engineer designing microchips today,” he said. “They can make so many sounds.

No other single instrument has so much range.”

Morel said. “We haven’t built an organ since the 1990s. A lot of the old churches are on hard times, and organs can be expensive to maintain.”

Morel said he’s got two or three restoration jobs left, and then it’s probably time to close up the multigenerational business.

“We can’t find anyone who wants to take it over,” Morel said. “This is a labor of love. You don’t do it to get rich. And if you’re not willing to run out in a blizzard to do an emergency repair on Christmas Eve, then you’re not living up to the standards we hold ourselves to.”

The Industrial Revolution introduced organs powered by electric air blowers.

Pipe organs were once a staple of American life, Morel said.

“In the silent film era, any theater worth its salt had a pipe organ.

Beyond a soundtrack of mood music, they could make so many sound effects: boat horns, sirens, even waves and pounding surf.”

The early 20th century saw an explosion of similar instruments, including automatic organs that even included banjos, violins and other instruments played mechanically.

Denver had some legendary organs.

The old City Auditorium, which today is part of the Denver Center for Performing Arts, was home to a colossal,

four-story organ. The City of Denver employed a “city organist” who gave recitals as often as seven days a week some summers.

The Phipps Mansion in Denver’s Belcaro neighborhood featured an automatic organ in the basement that could be controlled by switches throughout the house, and could play a variety of contemporary and classic tunes.

The advent of talking movies, the Great Depression and metal rationing during World War II spelled a downturn for pipe organs, but pent-up demand and a surge of suburban church building in the postwar years meant an explosion in the organ market. It would prove to be the last.

“Tastes in church music are changing, and they have been for a while,”

Old and new Some of the postwar suburban churches are still mighty proud of their pipe organs, and finding ways to incorporate them into modern worship.

At Ascension Lutheran Church in Littleton, the 1950s-vintage pipe organ is still a draw for parishioners, said Michael Zehnder, the church’s director of music ministries.

The church now holds two services every week: a traditional service built around a pipe organ performance, and a contemporary service built around modern music. Zehnder also leads several choirs and handbell choruses.

“I’m a pastor’s son, and when contemporary music came along in the 1970s, it seemed so wrong to me,” Zehnder said. “But time and again in the Scripture, we see passages about making joyous music to celebrate God. We read about drums, cymbals, harps and trumpets. Martin Luther said, ‘Next to the word of God, I give music the highest praise.’”

Zehnder sees the organ as a bridge to the church’s past, and a way to preserve hymns that date to medieval times.

“It’s a way to feel the awe of God,” Zehnder said.

More nursing power Colorado welcomed 50 nurses dedicated to helping with the state’s COVID-19 response, the state announced March 16.

These nurses, from the Freedom Health Care Staffing Company, will initially staff testing sites and health care facilities. This effort was made possible by a portion of the money from the Disaster Emergency Fund that was directed by Polis’ March 11 executive order.

Polis also announced executive action last week to cut “through red tape” so that medical professionals who are licensed in other states but reside in Colorado can practice medicine here to address the strain on the state’s health care system.

The state Department of Public Health has also authorized every paramedic and emergency medical technician, or EMT, in the state to be able to administer the COVID-19 test.

Nursing, assisted living facilities The state restricted all visitors at skilled nursing, assisted living and intermediate care facilities, a news release March 14 announced.

The order requires these facilities to offer virtual communication tools to allow residents to speak to people who would have visited them; to provide staff to assist residents with those tools; to document symptom screen-

WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS? Coronavirus is a family of viruses named for the microscopic view of crownlike spikes on their surfaces, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

These viruses can cause the common cold or more severe diseases such as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome), which have seen outbreaks in the past, according to the CDC. COVID-19 — standing for “coronavirus disease 2019” — first appeared in late 2019 in Wuhan, China.

Symptoms of COVID-19 can include fever, cough and breathing trouble. Most people develop only mild symptoms, according to Denver Public Health. But according to the CDC, some — usually those with severe underlying health conditions or older adults — develop more serious symptoms, including pneumonia, which can be fatal.

Technically, COVID-19 is caused by a virus named SARS-CoV-2. ing for all individuals who enter the building; and, if the facility has a positive or suspected positive case of COVID-19, the facility will keep visitation records to prevent exposure to other residents.

People who are older or have underlying chronic health conditions are at higher risk of becoming very sick or dying from COVID-19.

“It is important to note that at this time there have not been any confirmed cases of COVID-19 in these Colorado facilities,” Randy Kuykendall, a division director with the state Public Health Department, said in a news release. The order “is an impor-

Residents and visitors of those areas are advised to stay home or in a comparable setting as much as possible, work from home or stay at least 6 feet from others, avoid group settings, only go to public spaces for necessities such as groceries and the pharmacy, and continue non-group activities such as walking, hiking, jogging and cycling.

DENVER — Green Mountain’s greatest girls basketball season in the school’s history came to a close Thursday, March 12, at the Denver Coliseum.

No. 3-seeded Rams lost to No. 7 Holy Family 38-31 in the Class 4A state semifinal. The Tigers — 6-time state champions under coach Ron Rossi — never trailed, but Green Mountain did close within 16-13 in the third quarter.

“We didn’t quit,” Green Mountain coach Darren Pitzner said. “The intensity in the third quarter almost got us back in the game.”

A 3-pointer by Green Mountain freshman Jayda Maves with 3:10 left in the third quarter cut Holy Family’s lead to just 3 points. However, that was as close as the Rams could get.

Green Mountain shot 10-for-40 (25 percent) from the field. Holy Family was even worse going 11-for-49 (22.4 percent) shoot, but the big difference was from the free-throw line.

“Those shots inside just couldn’t fall,” Pitzner said as the Rams’ shooting from the field. “It was very physical inside. We tend to get to the free-throw line a lot more. Tonight we didn’t get to the line much.”

Holy Family went 15-for-22 from the free-throw line, including making a dozen of those from the charity stripe in the final quarter. The Rams had just 11 trips to the line total making 9 free throws.

Green Mountain’s 18 turnovers compared to Holy Family’s eight turnovers also made a difference.

“Honestly, in the first half Holy Family just outworked us and out hustled us a little bit,” Green Mountain senior Kasey Klocek said.

Despite the loss, the 24-3 record compiled during the historic season for the Rams is something that will go into Green Mountain’s record books.

“I attribute a lot of the success to the positive attitude of our seniors,” Pitzner said of his three seniors Riley Shoemaker, Maddie Phillips and Klocek. “That rubbed off on the whole program. It’s amazing to see the growth that happens organically through a group of great kids working together.”

The Rams won their first conference title since the 1994 season.

“I know it’s the start of something,”

Pitzner said. “I’m hugely excited about what we have coming back. The program has the chance to continue to get better and better, but that his going to take a lot of work. We aren’t at the level of those very top teams yet.”

“It was really exciting being able to play here,” Hank said advancing to the Final 4 at the Denver Coliseum. “I never thought coming to Green Mountain that I would have the opportunity to play here. I’m proud my team got this far.”

The atmosphere at the Denver Coliseum didn’t feel like a Final 4 state championship tournament. The COVID-19 pandemic created major changes, including limiting the crowd to just four fans per player, essential staff and media.

“It was kind of an emotional roller coaster,” Klocek said while it was in doubt if the semifinals would be played. “At the end of the day we’ve played in front of 50 fans. It was like we were just right back at home.”

Shortly after the 4A and 5A girls basketball semifinals were played, it was announced late night on March 12 that the remainder of all state basketball tournament would be cancelled because of the declaration of a state of emergency by the City of Denver and the likelihood that venues would be closed by government agencies, which did happen March 13.

“Everything we’ve done up to this

point was to try and keep the experience of a state basketball tournament for our student participants and high school communities,” said Colorado High School Activities Association commissioner Rhonda BlanfordGreen. “In the face of this unprecedented public health emergency, we are compelled to discontinue play in all tournaments.”

It was announced on March 12 that all spring sports — including practices and games — across Colorado would be postponed from March 13 to April 6, with the situation being reevaluated on Monday, April 6.

Klocek is one of thousands of Jeffco student-athletes who have to wait and see if there is a spring sports season.

She has already signed her National Letter of Intent to run cross country and track at South Dakota State University.

“I hope I can run on the track,” Klocek said of the upcoming spring sport season that is even in question with the COVID-19 pandemic. “If it doesn’t happen it would for good reasons.”

Warren Tech student snowboards for sale after contest Seventh annual competition congratulates 10 graphic design students

For its seventh year, snowboard company Never Summer is selling boards created by Warren Tech students after about 90 teenagers from the school’s graphic design department competed to submit eye-catching designs.

Company chairman Vince Sanders and others from the Never Summer team presented the project to students back in October, giving recommendations and highlighting current design trends in several industries. Months earlier, many of the participating students had already started thinking about how they would approach their chance to participate in the yearly tradition.

“There’s a lot more pressure with this project in wanting to make a good product because it’s going to go out to the world,” said senior Harley Cohen, who started brainstorming her design last summer. “It’s really cool we’re offered this opportunity.

Not a lot of students can say the same.”

Cohen’s design took first place in an online popular vote, gaining more than 3,000 votes. She was named the

Never Summer also named a top 10, who will each receive a snowboard with their design on it, and whose boards will be available for purchase.

tiple schools and youth organizations, but its largest partnership is with Warren Tech, with students’ participation in the snowboard design contest having grown year after year, Sanders said.

Instructor Scot Odendahl, who oversees the school’s graphic design department with fellow instructor Pete Cunis, said one of his favorite parts of the project has been seeing students’ different approaches. The project has seen students hand-paint, photograph and electronically sketch their designs, with all designs digitized into a final product.

Students had several months to complete their final product before Never Summer judges narrowed the pool down to a top 25. Those 25 students then presented to some Never Summer staff members, who chose 10 board designs to be voted on.

“It gives the students some realworld experience as far as what can be commercially viable. They learn client expectations and develop selfconfidence,” Sanders*said. “And for us, the students are producing things that we’re using.”

Gish agreed: “It gives you a kick-

start into a good, solid career,” she said.

Cohen, Gish and several of their fellow classmates in the top 10 had this to say about their design processes: Harley Cohen, grade 12.

“Mine was obviously inspired by space and celestial, fun stuff. My favorite part of this project has been just seeing all the natural beauty in the world and out of it. It’s rewarding having that finished piece. I do really love graphic design, and I think I could make a career out of it.”

“I wanted to go with some brighter colors and show the contrast between the good and bad of being human. I’ve enjoyed seeing everyone else’s designs. I love coming to Warren Tech — It feels like a big family with everyone having the same interests. Graphic design is so much more fun than I ever thought it could be.”
