Man dies after shootout with Lakewood Police

I was a private tutor for years and years and years, and then I worked as a sales rep for Pearson Education. I liked working on the business side, but I missed teaching. My husband and I were always interested in opening up a business, and that’s why we opened up Math-

A gym for math Like a gymnasium, kids get a personal trainer for math. I have just over 40 kids who come to our Mathnasium, but I would like to get up to 100 kids. I help kindergarten through 12th graders, but right now, middle schoolers and high schoolers are the majority of our kids.

create a customized plan to help them understand math better.

The program is so rewarding in itself. The thing that makes my job so fun is that the kids are having fun. It warms my heart to see the kids having fun. They want to be here, and they’re getting better at math.

At about 8:30 a.m. on March 11, police received reports of shots fired in the 6400 block of West Mexico Avenue. Lakewood Police Department asked residents to shelter in place, and asked the public to avoid the area while the shots were investigated.

Nearby Lasley Elementary School was also placed on lockdown during the incident.

When police arrived, they found 51-year-old Antony Lee Montana inside a home firing off multiple rounds. Montana hit other homes in the neighborhood.

According to police, officers swarmed into the home, and Montana fled in his truck and fired at police. Officers returned fire and hit Montana.

He continued to flee and eventually crashed into multiple homes. Montana finally came to a stop and parked his car in the backyard of a home near the corner of West Mexico Avenue and South Eaton Street. He was taken to a hospital where he later died from injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

An investigation into the shooting death is underway by the Jefferson County Critical Incident Team.

Amur tiger arrives at Denver Zoo 8-year-old Yuri will make his home at The Edge exhibit STAFF REPORT

The newest exhibit at the Denver Zoo is now home to one of the newest residents.

Yuri, an 8-year-old, 435-pound Amur tiger, arrived in late January from Bronx Zoo, according to a news release. His arrival was at the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’

Species Survival Plan. Yuri’s new home will be in the zoo’s The EDGE exhibit.

Yuri has spent several weeks getting comfortable in his new home and will be introduced to 8-year-old Nikita once he is adjusted to his new habitat and caretakers.

Because Yuri hasn’t sired any cubs yet, his genetics are particularly valuable to zoos’ collective efforts to save the species and maintain a healthy, genetically-diverse population of Amur tigers. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists Amur tigers as endangered, primarily because of poaching of tigers as well as their wild prey species.

Yuri was born at the Erie Zoo in 2010, but has spent seven of his eight years at the Bronx Zoo. Eagle-eyed viewers may recognize him from Animal Planet’s “The Zoo,” which takes viewers behind the scenes at the Bronx Zoo. He is making more frequent appearances in one of the two main yards in The EDGE, which brings guests closer than ever to our two tigers.

Visitors can identify him by the heart-shaped markings above his eyes and his size — he’s close to double Nikita’s weight.

How Do You Know the Real Estate Agent You’re Interviewing Is Telling You the Truth?

This is a difficult topic, but it’s one that deserves discussion. As I’ve pointed out before, there are so many licensed real estate agents that fewer than half of them earn a living solely from brokering real estate transactions. (FYI, all 10 Golden Real Estate agents are full-time, earning enough from their real estate careers not to require a second job.)

That means that the agent you are interviewing may feel lucky to have two or more transactions per year and capturing you as a seller or buyer could be super important. This could cause him or her to misrepresent their level of success as well as their experience and market knowledge.

I can safely recommend every Golden Real Estate broker associate, not only because they are full-time and successful, but because they adhere to the Realtor Code of Ethics. I have let go previous associates when I observed or learned about ethical lapses. Unfortunately, all of us can recount times when we have observed ethical lapses by agents on the other side of a transaction.

The Pareto principle applies to real estate agents as it does to other occupations, with 20% of us doing 80% of the transactions. And since the average real estate agent has only four closings per year, the median number of closings is probably closer to two. In other words, half of the licensed agents have two or

fewer closings per year. That does not translate into a living wage.

In researching this topic, I googled the phrase “what does the average Realtor make,” and I urge you to do it, too — especially if you are considering real estate as a career. It’s very discouraging.

A posting on TheStreet.com, for example, includes the following: “If you think you can just devote a few hours a week and make a nice income as a real estate agent, you are badly deluded. A national survey of agents and brokers who belong to the National Association of Realtors finds that agents who put in 60 hours or more a week have median earnings of $100,000 a year. By contrast, for those who put in less than 20 hours a week, the median is $8,930 a year.

At Golden Real Estate we had about 100 transactions in both 2017 and 2018, or an average of 10 transactions per agent. We don’t need to mislead a buyer or seller regarding our level of experience and success. Also, we have weekly office meetings where we discuss all aspects of the business, often with guest speakers. We take the annual commission update class and the biennial Realtor Ethics class together in our office, so we’re all on the same page.

One common mistruth told by agents is, “I have a buyer for your house.” All too often it’s a ruse to get your listing,

after which they tell you that the buyer found another house, “but we’ll find you another buyer after it’s on the MLS.” Another lie is “Our listing fee is 1%.”

Diversity night at Emory Elementary ‘International Night’ gathering celebrates different cultures

n Feb. 28, Emory Elementary hosted “International Night,” a night where the school celebrated different cultures and highlighted that there is strength in diversity. Students performed by singing and dancing, and after, guests could walk around the school where aspects of different cultures were highlighted and traditional food from different countries was shared. Among those who attended were Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul, West Metro Fire Department, Colorado State University Extension and more.

“We want our community to know where we are, who we are, and that we are a welcoming school that values diversity, supports family and community engagement and has student success and achievement as our main goal,” said Andrea Syko, the school’s family engagement liaison.

Carmody Middle School assistant principal arrested Littleton Police arrested Michael Pate at his residence in Littleton STAFF REPORT

Michael Pate, a 38-year-old assistant principal at Carmody Middle School in Lakewood, and former assistant director at Outdoor Labs, was arrested on March 1 at his residence in the city of Littleton.

Pate allegedly proPate vided alcoholic bever-

ages to an underage male, according to a press release from the Littleton Police Department. He was formally charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, a class 4 felony.

After being placed on administrative leave, Pate resigned from his position at Carmody Middle School.

School Principal Wendy Doran wrote a letter to parents at the school in which she said law enforcement reported the incident did not involve Carmody students.

Police are still investigating into Pate’s interactions with other underage people. The Littleton Police Department is asking the community to call 303-795-3713 if you have informa-

Lakewood man convicted of killing his baby daughter

After five days of trial, a Jefferson County jury has found Kelly Ray Kerr guilty of Child Abuse Resulting in Death.

Kerr, 39, was the primary caregiver for his three-month-old daughter Olivia while her mother was at work.

In July of 2017, Kerr called Olivia’s mother, saying the three-monthold wasn’t breathing, according to a release Kerr from the First Judicial District Attorney.

Fire Rescue found Olivia unresponsive at Kerr’s home at 10596 W. 26th Ave. She died at Children’s Hospital on July 27, 2017.

Olivia’s body was found with a major skull fracture, a second skull fracture, bilateral retinal hemorrhages, rib fractures and bruising on her face and jaw, according to the release.

The Coroner revealed to the jury that the cause of Olivia’s death was blunt force trauma, while an expert testified that her injuries were consistent with having been shaken.

Another testimony disclosed that Olivia didn’t have unusual behavior, or injuries before she died.

Kerr is facing 16 to 48 years in prison.

Police scanner access fading as agencies cite safety Some departments embrace encryption, drawing scrutiny from media experts

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office encrypted two of its four main radio channels approximately six months ago, which it hopes will make it easier for deputies using radios like this one to find secure lines during serious incidents.

Deputy Corie Chance sped in his vehicle to the scene of a shooting that would leave fellow Deputy Zackari Parrish dead and six other people injured.

Chance’s radio told him a gunman shot multiple officers the morning of Dec. 31, 2017. When he arrived on scene, word spread that an injured, unresponsive Parrish remained trapped in the gunman’s apartment, along with Parrish’s radio, feeding the suspect a stream of information.

An order went out to switch from the main radio channel to an encrypted one, but the new channel was buried under more than 15 options.

Chance fumbled through channels as bullets zinged around him, searching for the right one.

The experience in Highlands Ranch is why Chance is glad the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office has since encrypted — or blocked from the public — some of its main radio channels, and he hopes they encrypt all in the future.

nonprofit group that advocates for freedom of the press and open records.

Members of the public and media frequently listen to scanners or apps to follow radio chatter. It helps them gauge whether the government is serving the governed, Roberts said, or informs neighborhood watch programs.

Many journalists rely on scanners to know when and where breaking news occurs. Scanners inform their line of questioning, give them leads and so on. Encrypted radios leave them at the mercy of law enforcement agencies, Roberts said.

“You really need this information, otherwise you’re just relying solely on the agency to let you know, and on their schedule, and in their fashion, and perhaps with their take on things,” he said.

Al Tompkins, the St. Petersburg, Florida-based Poynter Institute’s senior faculty and group leader for broadcast media, said encrypting radio channels is a national trend that began more than 20 years ago.

While it is “easy to understand why police want to have private radio transmissions,” encrypting can present a host of problems for the news media, said Tompkins, whose institute is a nonprofit school for journalism that is a nationally renowned resource on media issues.

Some members of the law enforcement community say encryption is crucial for protecting private information and first responders’ safety. Those opposed say it diminishes transparency and hinders the work of journalists.

To encrypt or not to encrypt?

The tragedy in Highlands Ranch spurred a policy shift at the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, which six months ago completed the encryption of two of its four main channels. It has roughly 20 in total. Prior to then its SWAT channels were encrypted.

The Columbia Journalism Review reported in January that more than

two dozen Colorado agencies fully encrypt their radios. The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office is still deciding if it will join those agencies. That remains a possibility, said Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth, although she did not know if or when a decision would be made.

The Denver Police Department is poised to block its radio traffic this spring. The agency’s suburban counterparts range in their level of encryption.

In 2017, the Thornton Police Department switched from public to encrypted radio signals. The Arvada department has fully encrypted for roughly three years. Littleton’s police department is researching encrypting one of its special operations channels.

The Castle Rock department began encrypting certain channels five years ago. Its main channels are public and encrypted lines are used on a case-bycase basis.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office encrypts two of its channels, one for SWAT and one for investigations, a spokeswoman said.

Other forces, including the Englewood Police Department, the Northglenn department and the Adams County Sheriff ’s Office, do not encrypt.

In Douglas County, Nicholson-Kluth said the sheriff ’s office encrypted some channels for two key reasons.

The first was illustrated through the Highlands Ranch shooting, she said.

The sheriff ’s office wanted deputies to easily and quickly find a secure channel when responding to serious incidents and to prevent suspects from tracking them through public channels.

“They don’t want the bad guys listening in,” Tompkins said.

But he questioned how often agencies could prove criminals use public radio channels to spy on law enforcement.

Douglas County’s second reason was to protect personal information that’s sometimes shared on the radio. If people were to make a public records request, Nicholson-Kluth said, it’s the type of information that would be redacted under open-records laws.

Thornton police officer Matt Barnes, a department spokesman, said transmissions on public safety radio systems are “much more prevalent today and are increasingly used to” share information on law enforcement and private citizens. A bill introduced by state Rep. Kevin Van Winkle, R-Highlands Ranch, was killed in committee during the 2018 legislative session.

Open Space considers land exchange for Heritage Square property Open Space would get 83 acres, Martin Marietta could extend operational life of nearby existing mine

The news that Jefferson County Open Space is considering a proposal for a land swap from Martin Marietta Materials, concerning Heritage Square, has gotten people curious about what may become of the vacant property.

However, that decision may not be made until later this year.

Heritage Square is “in a beautiful spot (that’s) very representative of Jefferson County,” said Tom Hoby, director of Jefferson County Open Space, during a community meeting on March 5.

“The art of it,” he added, will be providing something that is a benefit for the community with the least amount of negative impacts.

Hoby added that should a land exchange happen, “we’re going to make sure that whatever gets done there will fit in well.”

The land exchange proposal Jeffco Open Space recently received a proposal from Martin Marietta

Materials — the mining company that currently owns the Heritage Square property — about a land exchange.

“For now,” Hoby said, “we’re looking at it as a land-for-land deal.”

The proposal has three components.

First, Open Space would receive 83.7 acres from Martin Marietta. This land consists of 78 acres of the former Heritage Square site — which is 125 acres total — and the 5.7-acre Bachman property located at U.S. 40 and Heritage Road.

Second, Open Space would deed about 64 acres of Matthews/Winters Park to Martin Marietta. This portion of Matthews/Winters Park is located north of I-70 and is currently not open for public use.

Should the land exchange happen, Martin Marietta would be able to expand the footprint of the Specification Aggregate (Spec-Agg) quarry. The mine currently consists of 285 acres and is situated north of Matthews/ Winters Park and south of the Heritage Square site. The exchange would also allow Martin Marietta to extend the mine’s operational life to upwards of 25 years or more — Open Space’s best estimation for what the extended life of the mine may be.

Third, Martin Marietta would deed the remaining 47 acres of the 125acre Heritage Square site to Open Space, once mining operations are complete. This would be in addition to the mine’s entire 285 acres that Open Space will gain — when mining and

reclamation are complete — from a 2002 deal. That deal, between Jeffco Open Space and Lafarge of North America, former property owner of the mine, exchanged 60 acres of Matthews/Winters Park for 522 acres of open space.

Future of the site “All future uses are just ideas at this point,” Hoby said, adding that any future development will include plenty of opportunities for community input.

However, he presented a few ideas at two community meetings on March 2 and 5. The same information was presented at both meetings.

Some of Jeffco Open Space’s ideas, at this point, include turning Heritage Square into a public park, relocating Open Space’s headquarters to the site, exploring food-and-beverage opportunities for a portion of it and turning part of the site into a business park.

More than one of these can feasibly be implemented, but it could include selling a portion of the land.

Two things that Hoby said are not options: housing development or additional mining.

There are two other benefits to the proposed land swap. One is potential trail connectivity along U.S. 40. This could provide better, multimodal access to and from places like the Jeffco government center and the nearby Dinosaur Parking Lots, for example.

The other benefit is future reservoir/water storage. With this re-use of the mining site, it would be possible to store “about as much water as Chatfield Reservoir does today,” according to Jeffco Open Space.

PLAN Jeffco, a nonprofit volunteer-led organization of open space advocates based in Jefferson County, supports the proposed land exchange, said Peter Morales, the organization’s co-president.

“Ultimately, there would be great gains to Open Space with all the land that would come with it,” Morales said. “Open Space is an important aspect to the quality of life for Jefferson County residents and the rest of the metro area.”

However, unlike most projects with a foreseeable future of about a year to a year-and-a-half for completion, this proposed project is looking far into the future, Morales said. The important thing now is the vision, he said.

“Now is the time to start thinking about it,” Morales said.

Concerns of the proposed land swap Although there are many benefits, Open Space does have some concerns about the proposed land swap, Hoby said.

If the community favors the site to be turned into a public park, it would cost a lot of money, Hoby said. And the only funds available for that would come from lottery money — Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), which “invests a portion of Colorado Lottery proceeds to help preserve and enhance the state’s parks, trails, wildlife, rivers and open spaces,” states its website — and the county’s Open Space Fund.

Depletion of it would mean funds would not be available to purchase other lands, should they become available, for open space use, he said.

Hoby also pointed out the ongoing concern of the impact to nature — wildlife and landscape views, for example — that any kind of development might have.

Timeline The land exchange proposal is just the beginning of a lengthy process to determine what may become of Heritage Square.

The proposal is expected go in front of the Jeffco Open Space Advisory Committee this spring for review and eventually, a recommendation to the Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners.

“Until we get to final terms, we’re in negotiations,” Hoby said.

Anticipating a date sometime this summer, the county commissioners will entertain a public hearing on the proposed land exchange and a vote.

Pending the county commissioners’ approval, Open Space will start working on planning and land use for the site, expected to occur during the fall this year through possibly summer 2020.

If the exchange happens, Open Space will own the land, but Heritage Square is in Golden’s jurisdiction.

Additionally, should the land exchange happen, Open Space would consider conveying the Bachman property to Golden for possible use as an historical or neighborhood park.

Blind skiers hit the slopes in Breckenridge For the tenth time, the United States Association of Blind Athletes helped blind people learn to ski

Lakewood resident Chloe Poston loves to ski.The fifth grader at Rooney Ranch Elementary said her family tries to go skiing every weekend during the winter, but on a most recent weekend, she got to ski with other blind children.

Poston took part in the Winter Ski Festival in Breckinridge on Feb. 28 through March 3. The United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA), a community-based organization of the United States Olympic Committee, and the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, a nonprofit organization that provides outdoor learning experiences to people of all abilities, partnered to supply lodging and trained ski guides to 17 blind people at the Breckenridge Ski Resort.

The event marked the 10th year the USABA helped blind and visually impaired people learn how to ski at the Winter Ski Festival.

“I thought it was pretty cool how I could connect with (other blind people). I don’t see (skiing blind) very

Police investigate fatal motorcycle crash

Golden Police are investing a fatal motorcycle crash involving multiple motorcyclists and vehicles that happened on March 10 near the intersection of U.S. 6 and Colfax Avenue in Golden.

JeffCom Dispatch received the 911 call about the crash at 2:37 p.m. Golden Police responded.

A press release states that police discovered two motorcycles in the roadway and that one motorcyclist had died. As of press time on March

11, police had not identified the deceased motorcyclist. “All of the other motorcyclists left the scene before police arrived,” states the press release.

The vehicles involved sustained minor damage.

According to the press release, witnesses said a large group of motorcycles were traveling westbound on U.S. 6 and a collision “caused a chain reaction crash that involved several motorcycles and several vehicles.”

As of press time on March 11, police were continuing the investigation into the exact cause of the crash.

Jeffco schools funds second round of innovations 19 projects earned funding in second year of grant program

First grade students at Fremont Elementary in Arvada are now incorporating learning on touchscreen Chromebooks into their daily routine. The initiative bridges the gap of technology between the schools’ kindergarten students, who are using touch-screen iPads, and the second- through fifth-grade students, who are using non-touch Chromebooks.

This was one of 19 projects to earn funding from the Jeffco Innovation Acceleration Fund 2.0.

“We don’t believe here a Fremont that every kid should be on a device all the time,” said Principal David Alex. “Putting them on a computer right away I think would be detrimental to their growth. That’s the philosophy of a lot of our families a lot of our community members and a lot of out teachers.”

Instead, Fremont uses technology to demonstrate concepts they have learned in the classroom.

A priority at Fremont has been to do away with mixed-age classrooms, Alex said. That took money though,

money taken from its technology budget. With sixth grade moving out of the elementary school building, Alex was able to redistribute current Chromebook carts to grades two through five. Funds from a designated account were used to buy the kindergarten iPads.

“But first grade simply had nothing,” Alex said. “I tried backfilling with donations from schools that had older devices, but a lot were broken. Teachers would run from working with a small group to troubleshooting a device for a kid and playing wack-a-mole troubleshooting devices instead of really concentrating on learning.”

But the innovation grant changed that. In addition, the schools Parent Teacher Association matched the grant allowing for the purchase of 24 devices for the two first-grade classrooms.

Last year, in January, the Board of Education for Jeffco schools approved $1 million for a new innovation grant program. The idea was proposed because the Jeffco Generations vision launched in October 2017 by Superintendent Jason Glass encourages entrepreneurial efforts as a way to “keep the main thing, the main thing,” — learning. The fund offers an incentive for staff to look for innovative ways to improve learning, conditions for learning, and readiness for learning for Jeffco students and encourages the organi-

All employees had the opportunity to apply for the grants and were encouraged to partner with other organizations, such as postsecondary institutions, nonprofit organizations, local businesses and community-based agencies to strengthen ideas and offer authentic learning experiences.

Last year 10 projects were funded.

This year, some of the funded innovations help to elevate projects of last year.

One of those is the grant that Hutchinson Elementary in Lakewood received for an Imagination Playground program.

Imagination Playground is an interactive way for students to build a playground using small pieces to design a model of the playground and then use larger, life-size pieces to actually engineer and test their design. The equipment can be reused over and over again and teachers and staff can scaffold designs for grade level appropriateness.

“I wanted to align it with our Jeffco Generations and do something where the kids feel like they’re doing something fun but it’s still purposeful,” explained Patricia Little, fourth-grade teacher and Hutchinson.

The program also aligns with increases the school’s STEM program — a goal to align with the Green Mountain High academies.

With the grant, Hutchinson will purchase enough Imagination Playground sets to accommodate all 240 students in the school.

Other innovative projects receiving funding from the district this year include focused on training for paraprofessionals; re-engaging Jeffco dropouts; performing arts; project-based learning initiatives; hands-on learning for students with disabilities; authentic learning experiences; STEM; reading; and 3-D printing.

Project proposals for the Jeffco Innovations Acceleration Fund 3.0 will be accepted starting in October.

Jeffco BOE extends superintendent contract by 5 years Jason Glass now holds contract with Jeffco schools until June 2025

Jeffco Public Schools Superintendent Jason Glass now holds a contract for the position until June 2025.

The Jeffco Board of Education voted unanimously March 7 to extend Glass’ contract by five years.

“The things I value in this extension are that it creates stability,”

said boardmember Brad Rupert.

“Many changes we’ve talked about and made in the last couple years will take some time to mature; take some time to show positive results; and take some persistence to let things come to pass. I think there is value in providing for that stability.”

The contract extension deals solely with duration of time and does not increase Glass’ salary.

Glass’ original three-year contract with Jeffco, which began on July 1, 2017 lists a base salary of $265,000. It also outlines a contribution to a taxsheltered annuity plan or plans in the amount equal to 7 percent of the superintendent’s annual salary.

an annual cost of living increase to his salary.

Boardmember Susan Harmon pointed out this yearly increase as it will continue with the contract extension.

Concern came from community members during public comment about the transparency of the contract extension as this was the first time it was listed on a public agenda.

This caused a discussion about transparency and policy by the board.

While this is the first time the discussion was on an agenda that allowed public comment, the board said they had previously discussed the contract extension in executive session.

“I’m really excited for Jeffco about this, but I don’t want there to be any question from anybody about our intent,” boardmember Ali Lasell said.

Craig Hess, chief legal council for Jeffco schools, advised the board that the item was on the agenda giving adequate notice to the public therefore the board was allowed to make a vote March 7, rather than waiting another month to allow for additional public comment.

“I struggle with this because I don’t want to stop people from having input,” Harmon said. “It has been on the agenda and we did hear from people tonight. I heard public comment on this.”

After the massacre at Columbine High School, people started talking about how to prevent that kind of gun violence. I wanted Colorado to be a leader in this effort, so, with the support of some fellow hunters, I founded Hunters Against Gun Violence — a national nonprofit that promotes gun safety and aims to curb the proliferation of gun violence.

I support the proposed Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law because ERPO laws in other states have saved lives. If Colorado had an ERPO law, a lot of good people might still be alive, including the victims of the Aurora theater shoot-

When we talk about gun use and restrictions, hunters have a considerable amount of credibility because they use guns to feed their families.

I believe in the Second Amendment, but I don’t believe it gives anyone the absolute right to own any gun they want. I don’t believe that the Second Amendment includes people with serious mental health issues, people who are guilty of domestic violence, or people with criminal records for violent offenses.

I got to learn from Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson and Greg Norman and Ken Venturi just what a good golf swing looks like, and that’s the image that’s in my head now. And I’m no scratch golfer or anything, to be sure. But I can step up to the first tee in early May and at least look like I know what I’m doing right away, because that image has been burned into my brain for forty years.

Notice I didn’t say anything about the first green. Putting is a whole different story. A tragedy. Sometimes comedy. Frequently a horror story.

At any rate, this is all about the beginnings of developing vision.

Vision has been one of those clever little buzzwords that people throw around, particularly in the business world, to try to sound thoughtful and strategic. But I find that a lot of people really don’t understand what vision truly is. I think a lot of people start to project what the rewards of success are going to look like, and they confuse that with vision. Thus, the trend a few years ago of building “Vision Boards,” compilations of pictures and images of the spoils of victory.

But I’ve never found that keeping your eye on the reward ever earned anybody the prize. It’s been my experience that the people who enjoy the

believe I’ve mentioned before that my son, now age 12, spends a lot of time watching YouTube videos. And many of them are of the useless, brainless entertainment variety. And that’s okay — frankly, they’re probably no different, no better HITTING or no worse than anything that’s on HOME the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon these days.

But a lot of what he’s been watching lately is of a completely different variety. For about a year now, he’s been watching a lot of videos of Michael Alcorn soccer players doing crazy trick shots and little skill things. And then he drags me outside to play with him and makes me look silly. It’s really strange — he doesn’t actually practice any of the things he sees, as in, he doesn’t break them down and take them one move at a time or anything. He just tries them.

And he’s developed such a good idea of what it’s supposed to look like that, often, he can recreate the things he sees without a lot of effort.

But it all starts with what it’s supposed to look like.

Test time again for Jeffco students

his month students in our community, across our state, and across the nation will begin the annual rite of passage that is taking standardized assess- GUEST ments. As a public COLUMN institution, our district is required to administer these assessments under both state and federal law.

It can be rightly argued that the nation’s system of standardized assessments expandJason Glass ed dramatically after the 2002 landmark federal law, No Child Left Behind, which required at a minimum testing in English Language Arts and Mathematics in grades 3-8 and once in high school. No Child Left Behind also required science standardized testing once in elementary, middle, and high school.

The name of the federal law has changed (it is now called the Every Student Succeeds Act) but the testing system put forth in No Child Left Behind remains as does the system of ranking schools based on the results.

My message to parents and students when it comes to these assessments is that they should take

the test and do their best. This is a good lesson for school and life. Jeffco kids are as smart and capable as any student in the world and these assessments are an opportunity for our schools to show what they can do.

We also recognize that some parents do not wish their students to take these exams. I have directed our principals to create quality learning experiences for students during testing times and we are respectful of parents who have made the decision that their student will not participate in the exams.

Our state tests measure basic and foundational academic skills and content knowledge against state academic standards. These standards have been benchmarked in comparison with expectations in other states in the U.S. and other countries. The tests have also improved in recent years to require some analysis and synthesis of information, inference, and even writing. This is a good thing!

If your student does well on these exams, you should be proud. Your student is meeting or exceeding a challenging set of academic expectations for their age-range.

However, there are also many students who struggle on these exams and even fear them. As parents and educators in our community, we all have a responsibility to support

these students in growing their academic skills.

We should also acknowledge that there are important elements the tests do not measure. Standardized assessments do not get at concepts like creativity and imagination, sustained problem-solving and complex reasoning, adaptation to changing conditions, teamwork and collaboration with others, or being a good citizen and friend.

They do not measure the depth of human talent when it comes to art, music, movement, and language.

They also do not recognize or reward students who are innovators, or who have the passion and spark of an entrepreneur.

While progress toward academic standards is important, these tests measure only a small fraction of what it means to be a quality human being, and arguably not even the

most important parts of that.

There are tens of millions of people in this country that struggled with standardized tests who turned out to be fantastically successful, wonderful human beings. You might even be one of these individuals yourself.

In sum, I encourage your students to take these exams and to do their best. This is an opportunity for our kids and schools to shine. But let us put the importance of these tests in their rightful place. The most important questions we encounter in life are those for which there is no one right answer. Teaching our students to navigate these questions with wisdom and grace is perhaps the most important lesson we can give.

Basketball fans and non-fans alike come together for one of the biggest sporting events of the year

oug Pruitt’s glass of a dark micobrew, sweating as it rested on a coaster at the Library Co., a bar in Castle Rock, was still half full.

Arms crossed, eyes gazing upward at one of the four TVs behind the bar, Pruitt intently watched a college basketball game between Kansas and Oklahoma.

He had no rooting interest. He was studying, more or less. And looking for a distraction.

“I better get used to this,” Pruitt said, as he smiled and took another sip of beer.

Pruitt is not a big basketball fan.

But he fills out a bracket every March and will follow the games for the satisfaction of earning bragging rights over his brother.

This year, Pruitt said, he won’t hardly be away from the TV. On March 20, one day before the tip-off of the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Pruitt is scheduled to get a vasectomy. He and his wife, Tasha, talked about it for months. Pruitt decided if he was going to couchridden for the better part of a week, he might as well do it while there’s something worth watching.

“I honestly would probably be watching these games if I was sitting at work,” he said. “At least this way I don’t feel bad about it.”

During the first two days of the first round of March Madness on March 21 and 22, Pruitt plans to watch as many games as possible.

The 2019 broadcasting schedule has yet to be released, but last year, games ran nonstop on four different stations — CBS, TNT, TBS and TruTV — from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Pruitt isn’t alone in his dedication to watching the games. In workplaces across the country, one of the most noticeable divots in worker productivity comes during the two-week stretch in March.

Distractions at work Low worker productivity during the tournament two years ago contributed to about $6.3 billion in corporate losses nationwide, according to a 2018 report from WalletHub.com, a personal finance website, Darrin Duber-Smith, a sports marketing expert at Metropolitan State University of Denver, said the massive draw to the tournament can be attributed to a number of factors. he said, it comes down to fans’ affinity for the sport and how they identify with universities playing in the tournament.

“Every school has a basketball program. They might not have football or lacrosse, but basketball is something that is ubiquitous,” Duber-Smith said. “It’s a culturally significant event. It happens every year and at the same time every year, and if you’re not into it, you’re going to be touched by it in some way.”

Between the men’s and women’s Division I tournaments and tournaments at other levels of competition, there will be hundreds of games played during March Madness.

“You have something for literally everybody,” Duber-Smith said.

Peter Craig, of Parker, a University of Kansas alumnus, said during March Madness he wears two hats: one as a raving Jayhawks fan, hoping his alma mater wins it all every year, and one as a fan of the bracket.

“It’s close, but I’d say my team is bigger than my bracket,” Craig said. “Every year, I always hope for a perfect bracket — everyone does — but in the end it’s just exciting to have that possibility. That’s why we love to watch sports anyway.”

“It’s really easy to turn this story into something out of our current news cycle,” said Neil Truglio, director of the Benchmark Theatre’s production of ‘1984.’ “But I wanted to respect world that Clarke Reader Orwell and playwrights (Robert) Icke and (Duncan) Macmillan created, and audience will fill in the blanks themselves.

The regional premiere of “1984” runs at Benchmark, 1560 Teller St. in Lakewood, from March 15 through April 13. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings and 6 p.m. on Sunday. Additional performances on Thursday March 21 and 28 and April 4 and 11.

Set in a dystopian future, the show follows aspiring diarist Winston (Sean Scrutchins) as he attempts to make a life for himself under the totalitarian rule of the Party.

Cast-wise, the show is the biggest the company has tackled yet and bringing the characters and oppressive technology to life creates an immersive and difficult experience for audiences.

“Seeing this show in a bigger theater gives audiences a reason to be removed from what’s happening, especially if they’re sitting far enough back,” Truglio said. “As a director, I want to lean into the intimate space of Benchmark and bring the audience in.”

A lot happens in the play’s relatively short 95-minute run time, and audiences should prepare themselves for a production that is both challenging and thought-provoking.

“This is not a casual theatre going experience. It asks you to engage and be willing to go there with characters,” Truglio said. “Benchmark’s whole mission to keep the conversation going. And a play like “1984” will spark conversations.”

The American Gaming Association, a casino gaming interest group, estimated more than 40 million people participated and filled out a total of 70 million brackets in 2018.

The madness that surrounds March reaches beyond the actual games. There’s the game within the game — bracket pools and gambling — and the upsets. Duber-Smith called it a “gambling orgy.”

But also, Duber-Smith said, the underdog mentality is something the casual fan can relate to, while the more invested fan will watch either supporting their bracket or their alma mater.

“Casual fans come in because it’s the idea of America loves an underdog, and there’s always lots of underdogs in the tournament,” Duber-Smith said. “I don’t think there’s anything more American than that.”

“The best part is we never know where the madness will come from,” he said.

At the behest of our community leaders Jefferson Parkway tollway will potentially now divide us creating danger, noise and light pollution.

Its proximity a mere few car lengths away from where my children play in our yard. Distance and decibels limits are less than normal since it is a private road. It does not complete the beltway and never will. I sit in the city of Arvada and JPPHA Board meetings as we are systematically told no to our limited requests, just to line the pockets of the city of Arvada, Broomfield and Jefferson County.

This is not democracy. The road makes no sense, but if it is to be built – it has to be safe and it has to be in keeping with our beautiful community.

Not transparent on Glass On March 7 the Jeffco School Board met and once again violated their obligation to transparency. The agenda contained an extension to Superintendent Glass’s contract.

The contract had not been published in the March 7, 2019 board documents; also, a new agenda item is not supposed to be voted on the first time it is discussed. The board had discussed the extension of the contract in an executive session (read…secret meeting). They considered this the first discussion.

As many of us that would like to see some metrics in the contract for student improvement, we would wish to comment on it. Why was this opportunity denied to the public?

Instead of a real discussion the board had a little lovefest conversation about how happy they were with the way things are going and stated the vote would be the same a month from now. Why is that grounds not to give the concerned public time to comment on the contract? Why does this fly in the face of some declining scores?

Apparently, the board does not understand Roberts Rules of Order.

They had a motion and could not figure out how to postpone the vote until the next month, even though a couple of board members had these concerns. Have they not heard of withdrawing a motion?

To add insult to injury, the contract contains automatic extensions.

Is this transparency?Wouldn’t postponing the vote for one month of public comment have been in everyone’s best interest?

Collin Parson was raised in Lakewood, and to this day, he calls the city home. A former member for Pirate: Contemporary Art, and the director of galleries and curator for the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, Parson was recently selected from over 30 artists to create a public art project to celebrate Lakewood’s 50th anniversary.

Parson’s project will be on display this September at Addenbrooke Park where the Addenbrooke family home used to sit. The only thing remaining from the home, constructed in 1953, is the fireplace.

Parson discussed the “Echoes and Reflections: Lakewood’s 50th Anniversary” art project and more with the Lakewood Sentinel.

What is “Echoes and Reflections” Lakewood’s 50th Anniversary” going to look like?

There’s this old chimney that was

once part of the Addenbrooke homestead. I came up with the idea of recreating the echo, or fragments that once stood there. You’ll see the footprint of the house that once stood there. There will be wall sections and windows and a couple of doors of the architecture that was once there. It’s celebrating the fragments of the house, but at the same time reflecting the future.

The ‘reflecting’ is literally mirror polished stainless steel. Basically, they are sculptures. There’s going to be a single bench in the center, and there will be mirror polish underneath it.

It will be where the couch was, or where the gathering place would be in a house. It will be the gathering place for the community.

What message do you want people to take away from this?

I hope they see that the footprint and these architectural elements were of the existing homestead. At the same time, it will feel new and reflect the past, yet celebrate the future.

I think it will be a great gathering place and a special place for Lakewood residents and beyond. I think this is going to be something in another 50 year that is kind of honored and cherished as a community.

D’Evelyn battles Columbine in 4A/5A Jeffco soccer showdown

LAKEWOOD — It didn’t take long for Columbine to find its scoring touch on the soccer pitch this spring season.

The Rebels — No. 7 in the CHSAANow.com Class 5A girls soccer preseason poll — put six goals in during the second half against D’Evelyn — No. 8 in 4A rankings — on Friday, March 8, at Lakewood Memorial Field.

“We are blessed with a good freshman in Riley (Kaali-Nagy),” Columbine senior Tessa Barton said. “I’ve got some good forwards on the sides of me. They feed me balls and I feed them balls. We’ll work better up top this year.”

Columbine ended up with a 6-0 victory. In fact, the Rebels scored just six or more goals once last year during its 14-4 campaign that resulted another 5A Jeffco League title.

“I think we have another really good group,” Columbine coach Brian Todd admitted. “I see it on paper and from what I know within the program they’ll be a very seasoned and experience team. Nick Cavarra (assistant coach ) and I are really excited about what we have.”

The Rebels have 11 seniors, led by Barton. The forward ended up scoring a hat-trick with goals in the 43rd, 69th and 74th minutes. The University of Colorado signer has averaged double-digit goals in each of the previous three seasons with Colum-

bine. She got off to a great start with the trio of second-half goals.

“She (Barton) attracts defenders which frees up other people,” Todd said. “Tessa was a part of a lot of those goals, but we started to really play good soccer in that second half.”

In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated. The Rebels and Jaguars were scoreless through the first half.

Barton was fouled inside the goalie box to draw a penalty kick in the 43rd minute. She capitalized on the PK to break the scoreless tie.

It was just the being of the scoring for the Rebels. Columbine put in five goals between the 64th and 74th minutes to open the season with the shutout victory.

“The first half it was just new to us,” Barton said of the scoreless first half. “Bella (Scaturro) is a great defender. I’ve always played against Bella. It took us a little while, but we got motivated.”

Kaali-Nagy, along with seniors Jocelyn Gutierrez and Libby Spangler scored a goal each during a fiveminute span.

“After that second goal we just kind of lost it,” D’Evelyn coach Reid Bervik second of the second half.

D’Evelyn actually controlled the run of play in the first half. The Jaguars’ best scoring catch came off a shot by senior Lauren Cook that Columbine junior goalie Elizabeth Michael saved.

ean Smith has won another national and world championship.

No, I’m obviously not referring to the late legendary former North Carolina basketball coach who captured two NCAA titles with the Tar Heels, one gold medal as a coach with the U.S. Olympic team and one national crown as a player at Kansas.

The Dean Smith I am citing lives in Lone Tree with his OVERTIME wife, Priscilla, who on Feb. 24 won the national and world indoor rowing championships for his age group.

Smith will be 93 years old in June.

Priscilla says when the couple would to go out for dinner in the Jim Benton southeast — when the basketball coach was still alive — they would always get the best table. Then she would have to admit that her husband was not that Dean Smith.

But the Dean Smith from Lone Tree doesn’t take a back seat with his accomplishments.

He has a sizeable wall display with ribbons, gold medals, hammer awards and a large picture that exposes him as a world-class track, cycling and rowing athlete. And the ribbons and medals were just the ones he has won since he turned 80.

Smith, who went to high school in Canton, Illinois, and to college at Bradley University, also in Illinois, was inducted into the Bradley Hall of Fame where he set a school record of 4:23.3 for the mile run.

“I was in high school and not good enough to play basketball,” said Smith.

“Running I could do, so I started running. Coach said, ‘I want you on the team.’ I did cycling through the ages.

My knees gave out when I was about 73. The doctor told me if I kept running I was going to have to have them replaced. I liked the original ones.

“So I was looking for something else and this buddy of mine found this rowing machine. I tried it and it didn’t bother my knees, so I said, ‘This is it.’

I could really compete and get serious about it.”

Two months after he started indoor rowing, he won a championship in Boston.

Between 1974-1990, he won eight U.S. age group 880-meter championships and four Master’s World championships. He set a world record with a time of 2:03.5 in the 800 meters at the age of 53 in Hanover, Germany.

He has one U.S. Masters cycling gold medal, nine U.S. and international titles in rowing on the water and 20 U.S. and world championships between 2003 and 2019 in indoor rowing.

For anybody puzzled by indoor rowing, it is done on rowing machines like those that can be found in most health clubs. Rowing machines simulate actions of watercraft rowing. And indoor rowing has become a sport of its own.

In his recent wins of national and world titles in Long Beach, California, on Feb. 24, he was timed in 9:43.7 for 2,000 meters.

“I love the competition,” said Smith.

“If there is somebody out there I like to get ahead of them. Indoor rowing can be very competitive and you are on a machine that can be very accurate in measurement. So the measurements you are judged by are very accurate. There are techniques you need to learn for rowing. ... If you are good on the water, you are probably good on a rowing machine.”

Todd added that he believes D’Evelyn is one of the frontrunners to win the tough 4A Jeffco League that featured four teams — Standley Lake, Evergreen, D’Evelyn and Green Mountain — ranked in the 4A

Several area teams were among those ranked and should be watched this spring.

Mountain Vista, which defeated Heritage to win the 5A baseball title last season, is top-ranked in the 5A baseball poll. Heritage is second, Cherry Creek third, Mountain Range sixth, Rock Canyon eighth, and last year’s 4A state champ Valor Christian is ninth.

In the 3A baseball ratings, Faith Christian was second and Lutheran third.

Defending state champion Grandview headed the 5A girls soccer poll, which had last year’s semifinalists Mountain Vista and Rock Canyon ranked third and fourth, respectively.

Cherry Creek was eighth and Arapahoe 10th.

Standley Lake was third in the 4A poll with Ponderosa fifth, D’Evelyn eighth and Green Mountain 10th.

Defending state champion Jefferson Academy was top-ranked in 3A with Lutheran holding down the fifth spot.

In June of 2017, Autumn Scardina called Masterpiece Cakeshop to request a cake that was pink on the inside and blue on the outside. She wanted the cake to symbolize her transition from male to female, but when she called the cakeshop, she says an employee hung up the phone when she explained what the cake meant. Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, denied the

Scardina had called to order the cake the same day the Supreme Court agreed to take up the Masterpiece Cakeshop vs. the Colorado Civil Rights Commission case — a case that stemmed from Phillips refusing to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple in July of 2012.

The Colorado Civil Rights Commission and Jack Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, have agreed to dismiss an ongoing state and federal court litigation.

The Colorado Civil Rights Commission voted unanimously to dismiss a case regarding Phillips refusing to bake a cake for Autumn Scardina, an attorney from Arvada. Scardina asked Masterpiece Cakeshop in June of 2017 to create a cake celebrating her transition from male to female.

Phillips refused to bake the cake, saying he felt like doing so would have gone against his religious beliefs.

Following the state notifying Phillips that it found probable cause that Colorado law requires his business to bake the cake for Scardina, he sued then Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and other Colorado officials last August. The lawsuit asked Colorado to stop punishing Phillips for declining to create cake messages that violate his faith.

Phillips is no stranger to having his name in headlines. Last June, the Supreme Court ruled in his favor for refusing to bake a cake for a gay couple in 2012, because of his religious beliefs, on the narrow grounds that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission had shown a bias against his religious beliefs.

The Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian law firm defending Phillips, called the Colorado Civil Rights Commission’s vote “great news for everyone.”

“We hope that the state is done going along with obvious efforts to harass (Phillips). He shouldn’t be driven out of business just because some people disagree with his religious beliefs and his desire to live consistently with them,” said Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Jim Campbell. “We look forward to the day when Jack doesn’t have to fear government punishment

for his faith or harassment from people who oppose his beliefs.”

Although the Colorado Civil Rights Commission voted to dismiss the state administrative case, Scardina can still pursue a claim of her own.

One Colorado, an advocacy organization for LGBTQ people and their families in Colorado, said businesses can decide what products, or services they offer, but they can’t choose who they offer those products, or services to.

“Despite the mutual agreement between the state of Colorado and Masterpiece Cakeshop, the law is still the law. No matter who you are, who you love, or what you believe, Coloradans across our state — including LGBTQ Coloradans and their families — are still protected under Colorado law from discrimination in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodations,” said Daniel Ramos, executive director for One Colorado.
