MY NAME IS

COLLIN BLACKFORD

Disney actor and junior at D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School

About me I started acting when I was five.

My parents got me into theater, and I spent four years doing that — but I realized there aren’t a ton of opportunities out here for that. So, I got into film when I was nine. I’ve been doing that for about seven years now.

I started off doing student films and independent stuff around Colorado.

One of the biggest films I’ve done is a Warren Tech film called “The Wolves.”

In 2017, I filmed a web series called “The Reunion.” It is kind of like a choose your own adventure book, but it is a TV show. I audition all the time for different roles.

I have an agent down in Albuquerque, New Mexico. That area is kind of the new up and coming film market.

In 2018, we drove six hours down to Albuquerque for a two-minute audition.

That audition landed me a role in the Disney movie “Stargirl.”

Disney + star “Stargirl” will be on Disney + March 13. The film is a love story between the main character and this new girl who comes to his school.

My character’s name is Benny. He is part of the main character’s friend group. His thing is that he loves to eat.

In almost every scene I either have two trays of lunch, a hot dog in my hand or a burrito.

I’ve watched Disney movies my whole life, and to get a role with a big company like them — it is really cool.

Passion for the spotlight I’ve always had a passion for acting.

It is almost like being someone that you’re not. Every single day in life you’re always worried what people think of you. When you’re acting, you can be out of your shell. You’re around other people who have the same passions as you, and you can be someone else. For me, I think that is awesome.

I’ll graduate from D’Evelyn Junior/ Senior High School next year. I play on the school’s junior varsity basketball team, and I just started playing on the boys’ volleyball team. It is important for me to be well rounded and to still be a kid. The film industry will always be here.

I’ve been looking into California schools. My plan is to get a business degree in college, in case this acting thing falls through. My passion is to be in Los Angeles and work there. The experience with Disney showed me that it might be a possibility.

White Fence Farm developer sues Lakewood

Crescent Communities claims city violated its rights

After being turned away by Lakewood City Council for guaranteed allocations to build the 234-unit Novel at White Fence Farm apartment complex, developer Crescent Communities is firing back at Lakewood.

As first reported by Business Den, Crescent Communities has filed a lawsuit in Jefferson County court against the city of Lakewood and the City Council, claiming they told the developer that Novel at White Fence Farm could continue to be built, despite the Lakewood Strategic Growth Initiative being adopted by voters last July.

Novel at White Fence Farm had been in Crescent Communities’ plans since 2018 when it started planning to redevelop the former White Fence Farm restaurant property at 6263 W. Jewell Ave. According to the lawsuit, Crescent Communities submitted a building permit application to the city for the apartment complex on June 28 of last year, costing the developer

$60,000.

In January, Lakewood City Council was carrying out the final process of implementing the growth initiative, which limits new home construction to 1% of Lakewood’s current housing stock and requires a public hearing and vote on residential projects with 40 units or more. Other provisions of the initiative include a requirement for developers to receive limited allocations for a building permit.

As council was determining how many allocations will be available in the upcoming years, it considered holding allocations for four projects that had applied for building permits before the initiative was passed — including Novel at White Fence Farm.

But at a Jan. 27 Lakewood City Council meeting, council elected to exclude Novel at White Fence Farm from the four projects that were guaranteed allocations. Councilmember David Skilling said at the meeting that the project had issues and hadn’t done everything that a previous July 2019 council resolution had envisioned.

What Does ‘Open and Transparent’ Look Like When Talking About Real Estate?

For some reason I’ve never understood, most listing agents believe that they should not be open and transparent with buyers’ agents regarding the disclosure of offers in hand when there’s a bidding war for their listing. At Golden Real Estate, we believe in being open and transparent. Here’s what that looks like.

Rule number one is to always tell the truth. We never mislead a colleague about offers in hand.

If we don’t have competing offers, we’ll never represent that we do. This is a matter of ethics.

The Realtor Code of Ethics, to which every Realtor swears allegiance, requires no misrepresentation about anything, whether it’s how successful we are or whether we have competing offers.

Agents from other brokerages, however, typically won’t disclose the price or nature of the offers they have for their listings. At Golden Real Estate, we not only disclose the price and terms of offers received, but we will let each agent know if their offer is surpassed by a better offer. We don’t want any buyer or their agent to have the experience of being blindsided.

This is good for both buyer and seller, and buyers’ agents invariably thank me when I explain this policy. After all, how would you as a buyer like to learn later that if you had only offered $2,000 more (which you were willing to do), you would have won that bidding war?

Similarly, how would you as a seller, like to learn that you could have gotten $2,000 more for your house?

Although this process essentially operates like an auction, where everyone in the room knows what they’re bidding against and chooses on their own when to drop out of the bidding, it doesn’t mean that we let the bidding go on forever.

After the buyers have raised their bids twice, it’s time to ask for a final bid, without offering to return if it’s not the winning bid. While this is our policy, the seller, of course, is the final authority on how long to continue the back and forth.

By that time, however, they tend to be quite happy with the highest bid and agree to cut it off. To do otherwise risks antagonizing the buyers and their agents.

happy that we were transparent enough that they felt they had a fair chance to win a coveted listing.

This approach takes more work on our part than doing what other agents typically do when multiple offer situations arise, which is to inform agents that they have multiple offers and ask buyers’ agents to submit their “highest and best.”

Then the seller accepts the best offer and other buyers are upset and angry that they weren’t allowed to raise their offer.

We feel, however, that our approach is not only fairer to buyers’ agents but also produces the best price for our sellers. We wish that other listing agents would adopt this practice.

Transparency, however, does not extend to disclosing the price at which a home is under contract prior to closing.

The reason for that is that if the contract falls, we don’t want the next buyer to know what the seller was willing to ac-

cept. That’s because we have an ethical and legal obligation to work in our seller’s best interest, not our own.

The only time I would disclose the price at which one of my listings is under contract is when an appraiser needing comps calls me. If we are cleared to close — past inspection, appraisal and other contingencies — I’m willing to help that appraiser know the price so he can do his or her job in appraising a comparable listing for a different seller.

Thanks to this practice, Golden Real Estate has a better-than-average track record when it comes to closing price vs. listing price. In some cases this has resulted in our sellers netting their full listing price even after subtracting commissions and the other costs of selling.

40 West shows off art made by residents with disabilities The art is part of the Arc’s See Me campaign

Westminster resident Anicee Lamoreaux is only 16 years old, and yet, she has already broken over 200 bones and had four major surgeries. She suffers from osteogenesis imperfecta, or brittle bone disease — a genetic disorder that makes it easy for her bones to break.

But she doesn’t let her disability get in the way of her love for creating art. Lamoreaux likes to use vibrant colors when she paints to express her personality. Art helps her relax, and she uses it as a way to express her feelings. Her art has been on display at the Colorado State Capitol and the White House in the past, but now, she can add another accolade to her resume — 40 West Arts District artist.

Lamoreaux’s art was on display with fellow artist Jeff Alexander at the 40 West Arts District’s First Friday event on March 6, as part of the Arc’s “See Me” campaign that helped the two artists have their work on display. The campaign, which aims to raise awareness and promote inclusion, is in correlation with Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

to open up and express themselves through art. There is no right way to paint,” said Lamoreaux. She had four of her paintings at the First Friday event, including a music piece that featured a piano, guitar and microphone.

The idea behind the Arc’s campaign is to help bring people’s identities into focus, rather than a person’s disabilities, said Lori Ropa, executive director of the Arc in Jefferson, Clear Creek and Gilpin counties.

“It is about who they really are. See me as an athlete, see me as a graduate, see me as an artist — none of those things have to do with people’s disability, and their disability isn’t their identity,” said Ropa. “We do

really believe that all people should be valued and respected for who they are.”

Alexander, who lives in Georgetown, gained his passion for painting and drawing from his father, who owned an art gallery in the city. He had five mosaic art pieces on display in the 40 West Arts District. “(People with disabilities) are not stupid,” said Alexander, who has dyslexia. “We’re very artistic. Some of us have autism, some of us have learning disabilities, but we’re not someone you should be afraid of.

We’re very nice people, you just need to get to know us.”

Alexander is a Georgetown resident, and his love for art comes from his father, who owned an art gallery in Georgetown. Alexander had five pieces on display during the 40 West Arts District’s First Friday event. throughout the month at 6731 W. Colfax Ave. “We’re always excited to bring new artists into the district and give them a way to share art with our community. Whether it is folks with disabilities that we work with or anybody — if we can help bring their art to a broader audience, we’re excited to do that,” said 40 West Arts District Board Chair Bill Marino.

St. Patrick’s Day in Belmar Alameda Connects brings in the holiday at the Hyatt House

The sound of bagpipes and the smell of shepherd’s pie took over the Hyatt House in Belmar during the “Blarney on Belmar” event on March 7, hosted

by Alameda Connects. The gathering kicked off St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the area as residents gathered to listen to music, watch Irish dancing, drink, eat Shepherd’s pie and Irish nachos and visit with neighbors.

St. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17 this year. Alameda Connects is a nonprofit organization that promotes the Alameda Corridor in Lakewood.

Day of Action means an ‘unexpected change’ in Jeffco schedule Teachers to ask lawmakers for education funding and educator pay

Jefferson County Public Schools will be one of six districts closing Thursday, March 19, as thousands of Colorado educators head to the Capitol for the Day of Action, hosted by the Colorado Education Association (CEA).

Educators plan to rally at the Capitol, followed by a morning speaking to legislators, said Amie Baca-Oehlert, CEA president. The association is asking for an increase to education funding and teacher pay.

“We want an opportunity for legislators to hear from educators how low pay impacts them individually,” she said.

Some Jefferson County teachers, like Sydney Slifka at Lakewood’s Westgate Elementary School, say every day, they feel the effects of what they believe to be a funding crisis. Slifka teaches fifth grade, makes and sells jewelry, tutors and coaches, “and I still can’t afford a home in the county I live in,” she said.

“I have had several friends leave the field because they can make more money with less work” in another profession, she said. “We’re not funding

In response to the closure, the Apex Park and Recreation District will run a day camp that day at Arvada’s Apex Center, 13150 W. 72nd Ave. The camp includes ice skating, rock wall climbing and other recreational activities and runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The program has 50 spaces total and had 20 spaces remaining as of March 6.

The camp costs $50 for in-district and $60 for non-district residents. our schools, which is affecting our kids.

Many educators have said a particular concern is that a lack of funding has left students without adequate mental health support, Baca-Oehlert added.

On Feb. 26, Jeffco Public Schools announced upcoming closures, saying “the current number of teaching staff who are submitting an absence has moved beyond the maximum number of absences that can be covered by our guest teachers.”

Extracurricular activities are not canceled, although specific schools may choose to cancel certain activities, the announcement said. All schools will open as scheduled on Friday, March 20.

“We understand that this unexpected change is inconvenient for families,” the announcement said. “We made this decision as soon as we reached the

threshold where we could not reasonably fill the anticipated absences.

Please know we exhausted all resources before deciding to cancel school for students.”

Staff members taking the day off for the Day of Action must use a personal day, as opposed to a sick day.

The mass absence isn’t in violation of the teachers’ or support professionals’ unions negotiated requirements with the district, and “as of this time, these requirements are being met by each individual teacher, to our best knowledge,” said Jeffco’s chief human resources officer, David Bell.

Students will not have to make up the school day unless the district closes for additional snow days this year.

Teachers who plan on attending the Day of Action widely agree that the day is a chance to show they value students by taking a personal day to fight for funding.

However, some community members, like Dean Schulze, a parent of an Arvada West student, say the educators’ methods are against taxpayers’ best interest.

“How much are we paying to have teachers engaging in a work stoppage lobby us for higher taxes?” Schulze wrote in an email to CCM. “I find this work stoppage outrageous. Should all government employees be able to take a day off of work to lobby for more money?

Further, the closure could present some immediate obstacles for families.

Particularly, some parents may find themselves in need of supervision for their children that day, said Shawna Fritzler, president of the Jeffco PTA. For many of them, the only option may be to seek out a childcare provider and take on the additional cost.

For Arvada resident Sarah Masi, who has three children attending Golden’s Free Horizon Montessori, those costs add up quickly. Masi has enrolled all three of her children in the Apex camp, as she and her husband both work fulltime.

“I felt very grateful they offered that.

It’s a great option,” she said. However, even after a discount for families who enroll multiple children in the camp, “I’m paying more in childcare that day than I will get from my job.”

On the one hand, the closure has sparked an unexpected expense, and she doesn’t want her children to miss out on educational time, she said.

On the other, “I understand that teachers here are in a tough spot,” she said.

Meanwhile, others in the area have turned to local childcare providers.

Darlene Lowe, a home childcare provider in Arvada, said she has received several calls from parents looking for childcare specifically because of the closure, as well as calls from regular customers asking whether the closure will affect services. Lowe still had space available for March 19, as of March 5.

Rates for childcare providers vary throughout the area, with some Jefferson County daycares charging an estimated cost of $40, $60, $65 or $75 for one day, according to care.com, a childcare listing site.

“For families who need to coordinate daycare, that can be difficult,” Fritzler said, “but surely, everyone can join together” to provide solutions.

She added that, while the PTA as an organization has not taken a position on the Day of Action, she personally will attend.

“I can’t tell you the number of (student) mental health issues I’ve run into” because of budget cuts, she said.

“We have to do something because it’s negatively impacted our kids.”

The March 19 date was chosen because many districts will be on Spring Break and because it falls right before state legislators will finalize their budget.

“Our first march, it was after the budget was decided for our state. It wasn’t immediately actionable. This year, it’s actionable,” Slifka said. “We’re not walking out on our students; we’re walking for our students.”

School district seeking feedback with budget reductions possible At first budget meeting, board says it will prioritize teacher pay

During an initial 2020-2021 budget presentation at the March 5 Board of Education meeting, board members were asked to name one or two budget priorities they have for this year. The four present board members named the same priority at the top of their lists: Teacher compensation.

“There are other elevated priorities out there that have been lifted up over time,” said board president Susan Harmon, but this year, “I think priorities I have heard would be teacher comepensation.” All of the board members agreed, save board member Ron Mitchell, who was absent.

The budget won’t be finalized until the summer, with the initial March meeting a chance for staff to give the board a general overview of available funds. In turn, board members provided direction on what they’d like to see in the budget.

This year, the board has about $17.6 million to spend, though the figure could vary, possibly by millions, depending on the state budget, said district chief financial officer Kathleen Askelson.

Meanwhile, for staff members to receive compensation increases based

on the steps and lanes salary schedule, the district would need about $17 million — leaving almost no room for other new spending items.

Another option — to adjust employee salaries by 1% for the cost of living — would require about $6 million, said Superintendent Jason Glass.

However, board members said they also hope to prioritize the recommendations of the District Accountability Committee, made up of parents, community members and district staff. The committee’s recommendations included increasing Student-Based Budgeting (SBB) dollars to allow each school in Jeffco to hire one more teacher.

The proposal would cost about $16 million, while an alternative proposal — for each school to hire one new paraprofessional, or classroom aide — would cost about $2 million.

Rupert advocated for exploring the alternative option as a way of “getting a little more assistance in the classroom (and) doing it in a way that might still stay within our budget.”

Glass added the district has already prepared a possible group of budget reductions, resulting in an extra $2.1 million. If the board chose to make every cut listed, it would have $19.7 million to spend instead of the $17.6 million.

According to Budgeting for Outcomes forms submitted by each district-level department, some of the largest potential cuts include about $125,000 from the Athletics and Activities Department, primarily “reducing school transfers for equipment and supply funds;” about $300,000 ending the Homebound Instruction Program, which provides education for students who are too ill to attend school; and about $425,000 in reductions that would eliminate busing to option schools.

“If you wanted to go beyond that, we are ready to act on more district cuts.

I will tell you that once we go beyond the $2.1 million, it starts to get disruptive,” Glass told the board. At “$4 million in district-level cuts, we will start spilling over into SBB (Student Based Budgeting funding). What we’ll effectively be doing is reducing the size of the organization.”

The cuts have not yet been made and the board has the power to make entirely different reductions, if it chooses to. These decisions will be made at future meetings, with a public hearing for the budget scheduled May 7 and its adoption scheduled for the following month.

Askelson and budget director Nicole Stewart said the district plans to open a community survey at some point in the week of March 9, asking Jeffco community members what they would like prioritized in the budget.

Jeffco also plans to schedule two in-person budget forums in April to collect the same information.

Board members said they planned to make their decisions based on this feedback, while also considering effects of the proposed cuts.

“Many of these things that we are contemplating are actually money-saving measures,” such as an adviser who oversees the employee exit process to avoid legal claims, Rupert said. “I want to be really careful in considering these things.”

A tale of two caucuses

Politics got local at county party events

Like many people, Ghada Wahan says she has always paid more attention to national politics than local ones.

But that’s begun to change recently for Wahan, who said she decided to participate in the Republican Party precinct caucus on March 7, the first step in Colorado’s process for selecting candidates for county and state races, because she is becoming more invested in community issues and wanting to have a voice on subjects ranging from roads to education.

However, the Arvada resident says she also has another reason for wanting to participate in the caucus, which will bring together a handful of neighbors to discuss issues and learn about candidates.

“I come from the Middle East and women being involved in politics is not very popular there,” Wahan said.

“I think a lot of people take this for granted but there are a lot of people who live somewhere else who would give anything to be able to participate in a process like this.”

Here is a closer look at two Jeffco caucuses and the experiences of Wahan and others who attended them.

Republican Caucus A little after 9 a.m. Wahan arrived at her caucus location, northwest Arvada’s Pomona High School. She was one of many attendees who experienced difficulties with pulling up her voter registration online and finding her caucus room, but she made it, along with three other caucus participants, as they got started 45 minutes after its 10 a.m. start time.

At the start of the caucus, Wahan was elected to be one of the precinct’s two delegates to the county assembly later in March. Wahan’s caucus room also received several visits from Republican candidates over the course of the morning, including Vicki Pyne, the only Republican candidate for state House District 27.

“My (Democratic) opponent Brianna Forco does not have anything to say about what we are concerned about for roads, schools and sex education for our kids,” Pyne said.

“Parental rights are not a value for her, she wants religion out of everything, so I really would love to have your support.”

During Wahan’s caucus, attendees also got the chance to submit ideas for additions to the state Republican party platform. Wahan’s two submissions focused on the need for more mental health funding in Colorado and her desire to see sanctuary cities eliminated.

caucus goers also engaged in a discussion about how the state party could better encourage participation and reach new voters. Wahan cited the need for better organization, starting with the caucuses.

“It was a circus this morning,” she said.

After the caucus, Jonah Hearne, an officer with the Jeffco GOP, explained that those issues were largely the result of the school changing around room assignments at the last minute as well as the county’s decision to require that many precincts be split up into smaller precincts.

Despite the initial issues, Wahan said she was glad she had attended and looking forward to the county assembly.

“I gained some information of how things work and it was really great to be part of this process and you see it from grassroots of how resolutions come and how it impacts the state,” she said.

Lindsey Doughtery, an attorney, said her legal background gives her an understanding of where the legal system is falling short and how to change it. Amber Hott argued her personal experience with homelessness and domestic violence would allow those to fight for struggling members of the community. Victoria Lopez touted her history of contributing to successful Democratic campaigns in the district. Karen Kalavity said she would prioritize protecting communities from developers.

The caucus then broke into individual precincts, which held a poll to vote on preferred candidates for U.S. Senate. Arvada resident David Hill said he supported candidate Andrew Romanoff during his precinct poll.

“I think the two main guys are Hickenlooper and Romanoff and I would’ve liked Hickenlooper more if he had not run for president and started running for Senate from the start instrad of getting in when there was already a strong field,” he said. “That led me more toward Romanoff although I like them both.”

Scott Merrifield, the First Vice Chair of the Jeffco Dems, lobbied during the caucus for candidate Trish Zornio, a scientist who he said is strongly focused on education and environmental issues.

Last October, two Lakewood-based students each reached out to the school district with plans to get their peers involved in addressing climate change.

At Lakewood High School, freshman Leigh Schmidt was working to build a social media presence for Project 5 Billion, an account asking followers to make lifestyle changes for the good of the environment.

At Hutchinson Elementary, Traeger Jones and his father, Eric, envisioned a Climate Action Club, through which the school’s third, fourth and fifth graders could “share how we feel about the climate and go outside and enjoy,” said Jones, a fourth-grader.

With finances from the district’s Innovation Acceleration Fund, both students will put their ideas into action.

For the first time this year, students could apply to be a recipient of the fund, which was created by Jeffco Public Schools in 2017.

Through the program, a total of about $1 million was awarded to 26 ideas brainstormed by local teachers and students. The district encouraged applicants to pitch ideas that transformed learning, tackling old

The fund allows “kids to learn in an authentic way and invests in projects designed to make the community better,” she said.

Creighton Middle School teacher Jenny Boehlke and Lakewood High freshman Leigh Schmidt are working together on Project 5 Billion, a climate action social media presence. Upcoming plans include working to increase their accounts’ number of followers and organize Jeffco student trips to climate rallies.

Applicants could propose a small idea with a budget of $5,000 or less; a medium idea with a $5,000 to $50,000 budget; or a large idea with a budget greater than $50,000. Jeffco received 76 applications, with 18 of them from students.

More than 2,100 Jeffco Schools community members voted online to determine the winners.

“We are thrilled and inspired by the innovative ideas to support student

learning experiences,” said Tom McDermott, the district’s chief strategy officer. “We are even more excited about the impact of this year’s recipients because the ideas come from the students themselves, or reflect their voice and the voice of educators.”

Claire Odorico, teacher sponsor for Jones’s project, praised the project for its uniqueness. Having worked in multiple school districts, she said she has never seen a district put on a similar funding initiative for stu-

“If someone didn’t do this hard work of creating the innovation grant, nothing would have changed. I would never have gotten this money any other way,” said Judy Sims, digital teacher librarian at Pomona High School. Her idea saw Pomona receive funding to update some of the school’s library furniture, which dates back to 1973.

Included among the updates were casters and brackets for tables so students can more easily work together.

enough to replace everything, but it’s enough to give us ideas of how we can make the 1973 furniture work.”

Meanwhile, at Arvada High School, finding innovative solutions has come in the form of DrumFIT, a workout program to get students active in a new way.

The school has used its grant money to purchase 45 DrumFIT yoga balls and drumsticks, as well as subscriptions to workout videos, which instruct students how to use the equipment to complete rhythm-based workouts.

PE teacher Jamie Thorson hopes DrumFIT will offer an alternative to classic workouts, which do not always engage students or offer the same social benefits as the new workout, she said.

“It’s so fast-moving, they can’t focus on anything else, and it’s really hard to be doing it and not be smiling,” she said.

Assistant principal Jeremy Jensen added that the school intends to use the equipment not only for PE classes, but also for any class, as students often need a break throughout the school’s 90-minute class periods.

In Lakewood, the students raising climate change awareness also already have plans for their new resources.

Schmidt and her staff sponsor, Creighton Middle School teacher Jenny Boehlke, hope to increase their

project’s social media presence. They have budgeted to spend the grant on new technology, such as graphic design programs, to help them better present the project.

Project 5 Billion has more than a collective 200 followers through its Facebook and Twitter handles — @ p5billion — and its Instagram account, @project5billion.

Many of those followers live in the Lakewood and Jefferson County areas, with Schmidt’s classmates often telling her they are following the page, she said.

“They’ll tell me they’re doing the challenges and how it’s going,” she said.

The goal is to build an even stronger presence in the school district.

“The end result is that we want a ripple effect” across the world, Boehlke said.

Schmidt added they plan to take groups of students from Lakewood High School and other Jeffco schools to downtown rallies and events related to climate change.

Jones is also doing what he can at Hutchinson Elementary, preparing to launch the club with the new funds, which will go toward building emergency preparedness kits for participants — including food, water and extra clothing. Participants will learn how to help the climate and what to do in a climate-related emergency.

“It’s going to help people understand how we need to help the Earth,” Traeger Jones said.

His father will help oversee the club, but “it’s student-driven,” he said. “This is a significant investment by the district into its students.”

Time to check in on our collective golf game

hen I was a kid, my first job was as a caddy at Green Gables Country Club. It wasn’t a HITTING great job — really early mornings, all HOME day in the hot sun, good chance you’d show up for work and not make any money.

But, it was the only job I could do as a 12year old, and it gave me access to free golf.

You’re going to hear a lot about margin of error for the next eight months, mostly in the context of political polls. Who’s ahead in Michigan, who’s behind in Arizona, which issues are likely to win on the ballot. And all of those polls are going to have margins

The idea of international drug importation is aimed at making drugs more affordable in Colorado. I acknowledge these good intentions, but I am extremely concerned about the implications for patients and public health in our state.

The United States has a comprehensive drug approval process, and our medicines are widely regarded as the safest in the world. Importing them from other countries undermines this process, potentially jeopardizing the confidence patients like me need to have in the safety and integrity of our medicines.

When I pick up my prescriptions at the pharmacy counter, I never question the process. If this bill goes into effect, how am I to know where my medicines originated or whether they’re safe? These prescriptions are meant to treat me and keep me healthy, and SB-119 stands to put patients like me at greater risk.

I am deeply disappointed in the Colorado Senate. Our representatives in the House would be wise to stand up for the safety of Colorado patients and protect public health by voting no on SB 119.

Art becomes something people can really get into

f you own what is commonly called a “painting,” you might want to hang on to it. Someday it might be worth a lot of money as a curiosity.

Paintings, typically but not always, are considered art, and they are achieved with oil paint, acrylic paint or watercolor on a variety of rectangular and square substrates QUIET that include canvas, DESPERATION paper and even cave walls.

Paintings can depict a number of things: the human figure, landscapes, animals or, in the case of abstract expression, nothing at all.

Caves in France near the village of Montignac are historically famous because of the interior wall paintings that are thought to be 17,000 years old.

Artists such as Durer, Rembrandt, da Vinci, Monet, Picasso and Pollock have inspired art students and audiences, and their sublime efforts

have filled art museums around the world, including our own Denver Art Museum, the Kirkland Museum and the Museum of Outdoor Arts.

While some artists, particularly the once-a-week variety that is fascinated by fruit and landscapes, will continue to paint on squares and rectangles, their numbers will dwindle to next to nothing.

This will have a major impact on future art exhibitions, on art schools, on art museums and on vendors — especially those who currently manufacture pre-made canvases.

One day, finding a canvas to paint on will be as difficult as finding a typewriter ribbon is now.

None of this means the end of art. There’s simply a new kid on the block.

It’s called “immersion art.” Immersion art is similar to entering a fun house at a cheap carnival where things seem to fall off the walls, endanger viewers and provide almost hallucinogenic images.

It’s happening and, most importantly, it’s cool.

be “reimbursed” from profits from toll revenue is not realistic, as the proposal is to build only 10 miles of the highway, only half of what it will take to complete the connection with the NW parkway. Every independent study of parkway toll revenue has shown that tolls will never pay for it.

Arvada and Broomfield should change the “congestion guarantee” ruling that Indiana cannot be widened to compete with the proposed parallel parkway route on the East side of Rocky Flats. Improving Indiana will go a long way towards improving mobility in North Jeffco.

As many of you know, I am a trained painter. I am retrofitting my entire inventory of paintings with mechanisms that will enable them to spin, move up and down and sideways, and emit sounds such as the roar of a lion and the bray of a donkey.

The art world is a step behind the music industry, where visual contrivances, such as pyrotechnics, countless back-up dancers, and innumerable costume changes replaced valid content years ago.

If your son or daughter is thinking about art school, make sure you don’t encourage them to major in painting, unless the school reassures you the painting classes will discour-

age static wall art, and encourage paintings you can touch, hear, smell and even taste.

And another thing: Get used to the word “holistic,” whether you want to or not.

There’s two real points: first, understand your fundamental strengths, and choose your risks accordingly.

Knowing my wedge game, I never shoot at the pin when it’s just over the water, though better golfers don’t think twice about the same shot. And second, if your fundamentals leave you vulnerable to disruptions that are beyond your control, then you’d better do something to shore up your fundamentals.

Methodists’ morality Your story about the Methodist Church’s inevitable split over LGBTQ issues, took more than 2,500 words to say what an online satire site said in a 12-word headline on Jan. 6: United Methodist Church to split over whether or not to be Christians.

The lede sentence in the fictitious article says, “Leaders from the United

Methodist Church have announced a tentative plan to split the church over differences on whether or not Methodists should be Christian or some sort of social group ... that makes up morality based on whatever it feels like.”

Sometimes humor gets right to the point!

Also, kudos to letter writers Russell Haas and Elise Brougham for taking Jefferson County Commissioners to task for their lazy approach to correcting the budget shortfall — namely cutting services (county jail and county fairgrounds), rather than eliminating staff and unneeded programs.

Carolyn Mae Stein Naughton June 28, 1930 – February 18, 2020

Carolyn (Babe) Mae Stein Naughton, 89, of Lakewood, Colorado, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. She was born on June 28, 1930 to Thomas and Caroline (Krauss) Stein. She was born and raised on the Stein family farm six miles south of Gypsum, Kansas and graduated from Gypsum High School in 1947. She graduated from the Kansas StateUniversity of Kansas Home Ec and Nursing program in 1952.

After working in Los Angeles as a visiting nurse for a year and a half, she moved to Denver in 1954. She married Truman Dexter Emery on June 1, 1956, and they had four children.

After a divorce in 1972, she returned to nursing. As a Registered Nurse, she worked for three and a half years on the detox ward at Denver General Hospital and was the Head Nurse on the Jail Ward there for six years. She worked with Visiting Nurses for many years and last renewed her nursing license at age 82.

Carolyn married Mike Naughton in 2002. Mike passed away in 2004.

Carolyn enjoyed gardening and travel. She always enjoyed time with relatives and was a regular at Reiff Family

Reunions in Kansas. She told stories of growing up on the farm during the Depression, chores on the farm before going to school, breaking horses, and being the chug-a-lug champion at K State.

She enjoyed sewing and was an excellent cook, known for her banana bread, hucklebucks and famous jello desserts. She was a devoted sports fan, and followed the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, and the University of Colorado, Kansas State and University of Kansas football and basketball teams.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her sisters Betty West and Yevonne Reed and her brothers Thomas William Stein and Leonard Stein. She is survived by her four children, Sheryl Delgado, Bart Emery, Kurt Emery and Shawn Harberg, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Carolyn donated her body to the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on March 21st at The Rock Community Church, 12472 W. Belleview Ave., Littleton, Colorado 80127.

Dawn Marie Hansen Dawn Marie Hansen, 64, of Lakewood, Colorado, passed away on March 6th, 2020. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Charleene Marie Curry and Harvey “Red” Thornberry. Dawn graduated from East High School in Anchorage, AK and became one of the first women to work on the North Slope of Alaska.

Dawn’s beauty was only matched by her wit and she always took great joy in entertaining, cooking and taking care of

those around her. She is survived by her two daughters Chanelle (Zach) Sayers and Shaelee Hansen; four grandsons, Layton Leeper, Sterling, Stellan and Sumner Sayers; sisters, Misty Steed, Kaycee Gregorich, Lisa Simons, and Theresa Wrangham; and brothers, Billy Thornberry and Hank Petit. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved sister Teresa Altman. She will forever be missed by her family and friends.

Controversial program aims to reduce young children’s risk of drowning

W

ith drowning as a leading cause of death among young children, parents each year seek out the best swim safety classes for their children.

One program in the Denver metro area is so popular among residents that it rivals community recreation centers’ own swimming programs in participation, the rec centers say.

Infant Swimming Resource, or ISR, has conducted more than 8 million self-rescue lessons nationwide since its founding in 1966 and boasts having saved 800 children, according to its website.

In the daily, 10-minute sessions, infants and toddlers are slowly taught to control their breath underwater, roll on their backs and then float if they find themselves unexpectedly in water.

Those old enough to maneuver themselves are trained to find a pool’s wall.

ISR is not meant to replace other swim safety measure and the program encourages practices including constant supervision of children near water, four-sided fencing around pools, self-locking gates and alarms on any entrance to a pool.

The program is not without controversy. The American Academy of Pe-

diatrics has not endorsed ISR because it lacks research, and some worry its methods traumatize children.

Still, parents steadfast in their support of ISR and confident in its ability to save young lives flock to the self-rescue lessons at local recreation centers, private pools and other facilities year-round.

“We are kind of the last measure against drowning,” ISR instructor Julia McDonald said. “If all of those other things fail, we are the thing that will save them if nobody else is around.”

Thankful for ISR Unintentional drowning was the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States, according to 2017 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was the second leading cause of death for children 5 to 9 years old.

Roughly 1,000 children die from drowning each year, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Standing by the pool at the Highlands Ranch Recreation Center at Eastridge, Christy Groza pointed to the exact spot where her 4-year-old daughter Hyacinth slipped and fell in the water two years earlier.

Hyacinth received ISR training when she was younger but had not been to a class in roughly a year when the accident happened. Nonetheless, she did not panic. Instead, she immediately turned on her back and floated until a lifeguard scooped her up, Groza said.

SWIM SAFETY GUIDELINES The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children begin swim lessons at 12 months old, if parents and their pediatrician agree it’s a good fit for the individual child, said Sarah Denny, spokeswoman and lead author on the AAP’s policy statement for drowning prevention.

Research shows that’s the age where swim lessons become effective and can lower the risk of drowning, according to the AAP. Parents are urged to stay vigilant and never leave a child alone at bath time, in wading pools or anytime a child may be near water. Stay within arm’s reach of infants and toddlers.

Still, many drowning deaths occur when children were not expected to be near the water, Denny said.

Pools should be protected by four-sided fencing with self-locking gates. Alarms on entrances to a pool are also encouraged, Denny said. All children should receive swim lessons, and parents too, according to the AAP’s policy statement.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 and it remains within the top 10 leading causes of death for people through the age of 54, according to 2017 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There are a variety of swim lessons available in the Denver metro area, at community recreation centers or private companies. Parents can get in the water and learn alongside their infants and toddlers in some classes. There are also small-group classes where parents watch poolside, or private, one-on-one lessons with an instructor.

“Our goal is to bring diverse food options and service to an area that has been underdeveloped,” said COMING Blackwood, ATTRACTIONS Neill general manager of Junction, which is located at 2000 S. Colorado Blvd.

“There are a lot of national chain restaurants in the area, but something is still lacking.”

Clarke Reader Junction’s 12,220-square-foot food hall will gather together 10 chef-driven food stalls (as well as the Denver-based Sonder Coffee and Tea and indoor/ outdoor Junction Bar), with the aim of tapping into some of the most popular food trends on the local and national scene. It will also add about 125 jobs to the area.

“The locals really informed us about what kind of places should set-up here,” Blackwood explained.

“We wanted people to not only have quality food, but authenticity.

And the people we partnered with share that dream.”

Restaurants that will call Junction home include, Big Wave Taco Shop, Bird on a Wire Southern Chick’n, Ebisu Ramen and Sushi (run by Chef Soon Choi, former head chef at Sushi Den), Grind and Grill Burger, Lazo Empanadas, Mr. Miner’s Meat and Cheese, Paciugo Gelato (which already has a popular spot in Lakewood’s Belmar), Pete’s-A-Pie of Denver (providing New Haven-style pizza by the slice and whole), Shawarma Shack and Smok Barbeque.

“I was so thankful for ISR,” Groza said.

For 2-year-old Benjamin Simcik, ISR lessons are about giving him survival skills when swimming with his parents and two older siblings, his mother Laura Simcik said.

“When you’re in a pool with three kids it could be life or death so fast and it’s really scary,” she said. “He needs to know that if you’re in water you can go under really fast.”

Benjamin did some crying when he began lessons several weeks ago. By week two he could float in the water without being held. In his fifth week, Benjamin was turning on his back when let go by his instructor and kicking to the pool’s edge in seconds.

“It was a little hard to watch at first,” Simcik said of the daily lessons.

“I think the consistency helped me too because I knew what to expect.”

Benjamin and Hyacinth’s instructor, Jennifer Dombrowski, has been ISRcertified for nine years and works in Highlands Ranch. She lets each student move at a pace that works for them, she said. She never allows a child to try a skill — putting their face in the water, submerging, floating — until she’s certain they’re ready, she said.

Both Dombrowski and McDonald, who is an independent contractor at the Brighton Recreation Center and teaches in Arvada, said demand is high for the program.

“Every child needs to know selfsurvive,” Dombrowski said. “Give each child that skill before they find themselves alone in the water.”

Castle Rock swim instructor Russ Marsh, who owns Smilefish Swim School, said former ISR students have come to him afraid of the water, which he believes is because of the ISR training.

“I think it’s horrible, because I get kids that come to me that are 3 or 4 years old that are terrified,” he said.

“They’re scared to death of the water.

Not all of them, but too many.”

He’d prefer the youngest of swimmers undergo parent-taught classes, where parents are in the pool learning alongside infants and toddlers. It provides an important layer of comfort for children, Marsh said, who began as a swim coach in 1972 and coached for 35 years, including several at the University of Colorado. He switched to running swim lessons 15 years ago.

And ISR is not endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics because it lacks any studies conducted by peer-reviewed journals.

AAP spokeswoman Sarah Denny has served on the organization’s coun-

cil for Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention for seven years. The general pediatrician was also lead author on the AAP’s policy statement for drowning prevention.

“At this time, we do not endorse ISR because there’s no evidence to show that ISR is effective in preventing drowning,” Denny said. “There is absolutely no evidence around ISR.” Denny said she isn’t sure why studies are not available on the program, but it leaves AAP without the necessary information to take a stance on ISR. A spokesperson for ISR could not be reached for comment.

Parents of children in ISR told Colorado Community Media they either were not aware of the criticism toward ISR or were not swayed by it. Firsthand experience, they said, earned their faith in the program.

“Some parents can’t handle their kids crying and they mistake that for being scared,” Groza said. “Just because your kid cries doesn’t mean they’re scared. It could just mean that they’re a 2-year-old and they don’t want to do something.”

Jefferson County companies that import materials and export products now have a new tool for saving on tariffs, including the high-profile ones currently imposed on China.

On Feb. 20, the Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation was notified that its application to establish a Foreign Trade Zone encompassing Jeffco and three neighboring counties was successful.

A Foreign Trade Zone is a geographic area located adjacent to a U.S. port of entry where commercial merchandise receives the same customs treatment it would if it were outside the commerce of the United States.

According to Kristi Pollard, the president and CEO of the nonprofit Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation, a foreign trade zone allows companies to save on tariff costs in two key ways.

First, companies only need to pay the cost of an imported material when it “is taken out of the box and actually put into a product” rather than as soon as it is brought into the U.S. “It helps companies because they are not just going to buy a handful of things at a time, they are going to buy things when they go on sale but it doesn’t necessarily mean they are going to use each of those pieces immediately,” Pollard said. “So it allows

them to manage their costs a little bit more effectively.”

The other thing an FTZ allows companies to do is not pay taxes on imported materials if those materials are ultimately going to go into products which will be exported. In that instance, a foreign trade zone operates

similarly to a free trade zone.

The point of entry for the new foreign trade zone, which is called foreign trade zone 298, is the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield. A foreign trade zone can extend to areas located within either 60 miles or a 90-minute drive of the corresponding port of entry, which allows FTZ 298 to include Boulder, Gilpin and Clear Creek counties as well as Jeffco.

Pollard said the county had been interested in establishing a foreign trade zone to increase the competitiveness of its business environment, particularly since Denver is also a foreign trade zone.

“It definitely does help us from a competitive standpoint,” Pollard said.

“While we try to work collaboratively with other counties in the state rather than competing with them, not having this tool did restrict us from those companies that had to have this tool.

So it does open up new doors for us that we have not had in the past so we are excited we do think it will give us a competitive edge as we move

forward.”

Unlike many foreign trade zones, including Denver’s, Foreign Trade Zone 298 operates under an alternative site framework to apply for their facilities to be made part of the zone. The issue Skilling referenced at the meeting revolved around a residential group’s appeal against the apartment complex, alleging that it violated an official development plan for the Wilson Property — an 80-piece of land at Jewell Boulevard that includes the White Fence Farm property. The residential appeal went before Lakewood’s Board of Adjustment on Jan. 22 where the board split a vote over if Novel at White Fence Farm violated the Wilson Property official development plan, resulting in the appeal failing.

The lawsuit reads that the Novel at White Fence Farm project is suspended until 2023, if not indefinitely, due to Lakewood City Council’s decision to not give Crescent Communities allocations. Crescent Communities says the application process for 2021 allocations is open but there are not sufficient allocations available for the Novel at White Fence Farm project.

The developer could apply for allocations in 2022, but the project would take up 94% of the allocations available that year, according to the lawsuit.

Lakewood declined to comment on this story as it is its practice to not comment on pending lawsuits against the city.

Wayne Forman, an attorney representing Crescent Communities, said the developer asked him to not comment on media inquiries regarding this lawsuit.

Thirty-five bison calves found new homes on March 17 during one of the Golden area’s most unusual fundraising events: the City and County of Denver bison sale.

Now in its 35th year, the annual bison sale is when the City and County Denver sells off most of the offspring born in its two bison herds that live at Genesee Park and Daniels Park near Sedalia. Matt Brown, the operations supervisor at the Genesee Bison Ranch, said the city maintains the herds as part of conservation and education efforts but cannot allow those herds to grow too large.

“We raise bison for people to look at but we can’t keep them all because we have to be good stewards and we can’t let animals overgraze the property,” Brown said.

State now has ability to test for COVID-19 Quick turnaround expected from facility set up by CDPHE STAFF REPORT

The State Laboratory at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment can now test for COVID-19 — the technical name for novel coronavirus. Testing had previously been done only by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a news release.

The test will be used for people who meet the criteria for COVID-19 testing only; it is not available to the general public.

With staffing and equipment resources, the state lab has the capacity to test up to 160 samples per day, assuming test kits from the CDC are continuously available. Turnaround time for results is expected to be within 24 hours of specimen receipt at the state laboratory.

The collaboration between public health, health care providers, and other agencies to prepare for the disease in Colorado is ongoing. The state will continue to investigate and test possible cases and provide timely updates about the situation.

Green Mountain climbs into 4A girls hoops Final 4

LAKEWOOD — Green Mountain girls basketball coach Darren Pitzner stated before winter break that it could be a “memorable season.”

Pitzner’s prediction was right on the money. The Rams’ dominating 64-33 home victory over Sierra on March 6 punched Green Mountain’s ticket to the Final 4 of the Class 4A girls basketball state tournament.

Junior Courtney Hank and sophomore Avery Oaster scored 17 points each for the No. 3-seeded Rams in the state quarterfinal victory over No. 11 Sierra. Green Mountain (24-2 record) faces No. 7 Holy Family (20-6) in the state semifinal game scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at the Denver Coliseum.

“It’s crazy. I never thought we’d get this far,” Hank said after the Rams’ 58-45 home victory March 3 over Durango in the Sweet 16. “We are excited and we’ll see where it goes.”

Hank guided the Rams in the round of 16 win over Durango. The junior poured in a game-high 23 points, including going 15-for-18 from the freethrow line.

“I’ve been working on them a lot since freshman year,” Hank said of her free-throw shooting. “It has been a little struggle. Something finally clicked.”

She stepped up to the free-throw line 18 times in the Class 4A girls basketball Sweet 16 game against No. 14 seed Durango.

The Rams pulled away midway through the fourth quarter against the Demons. Green Mountain went on a 12-2 run for nearly four minutes in the final quarter to grab its first doubledigit lead of the game.

It was a struggled in the first half for the Rams. Durango held Green Mountain without a field goal in the

second quarter to tie the game at 20-20 heading into halftime.

“I’m very proud of the girls. Much better composure in the second half,” Pitzner said. “We were really tested.

Major credit to Durango. They had awesome fans here. They are extremely well-coached.”

The final fourth-quarter push by Green Mountain had plenty of players in key roles. Senior Riley Shoemaker hit a 3-pointer with 5:42 left in the fourth quarter to push the Rams’ lead to 41-37. Sophomore Shea Murphy

scored in an inside bucket 20 seconds later.

“The balance was really good,” Pitzner said of the final stretch with seven different players scoring in the second half for the Rams. “The girls did a good job slowing the game down.

We did a good job pounding the ball inside in the second half.”

Hank had her second 3-point play of the second half the hard way with the layup and foul with 4:18 remaining to make the score 46-37. Oaster had a nice inside basket for the Rams and Shoemaker scored on a driving layup to make it a double-digit lead.

“The seniors didn’t want this to be our last game,” Shoemaker said of the halftime talk. “We talked about coming together and stop playing as individuals.”

Hank finished out the game going 8-for-9 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Shoemaker finished with 10 points. Senior Maddie Phillips added eight points.

“Of course we have ambitious goals of what we want to accomplish this year, but much more important in the big picture for us is savoring every day together,” Pitzner said. “Continuing to push each other and work together as a family.”

The Rams ride their 10-game winning streak into the 4A state semifinals. Green Mountain will attempt to add to its historic season. The Rams have never won a state title or even played for a state title in girls basketball.

Golden boys basketball season ends in Sweet 16

GOLDEN — Pueblo East continues to have success against familiar foes during the Class 4A boys basketball state tournament.

“When we saw them (Golden) on the bracket we knew it was revenge time,” said Pueblo East senior Darnell Kindred, who poured in 20 points for the Eagles on March 4 in the Sweet 16 game at Golden High School.

The No. 13-seeded Eagles upset No. 4 Golden Demons 65-62 in what was a rematch from earlier this season.

Golden got the better against Pueblo East the first time around with a 62-59 win Dec. 7 during the Golden/ D’Evelyn Preview Classic.

Pueblo East (18-8 record) flipped the script to come out on the winning end during the round of 16 state playoff game.

“We knew it was going to be tough.

It was a very similar game from the first time,” Pueblo East coach Mike Massaro said of the second go-around

against Golden. “I think we got the breaks this time. The things that hurt us last time were turnovers, shot selection and rebounding. We really tried to focus on those three things.”

Golden (18-7) and Pueblo East were tied 33-33 at halftime, but senior Ben McLaughlin buried back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Demons a 6-point lead early in the third quarter.

The Eagles did answer with a 9-0 run to take the lead. Junior Kyle Miller hit a big 3-pointer and Kindred had a pair of buckets in the paint during the run.

“If would could have gotten a few stops and opened up (the lead) a little bit, but they just pushed the basketball,” Golden coach Lou Vullo said of Pueblo East’s 9-0 run midway through the third quarter. “Everyone for them rebounds the ball and push up the ball. I thought we played pretty good defense on them. They are just really athletic.”

Plan would designate days for use of trails at Apex Park

Bike day, or hike day?

A plan being considered by Jeffco Open Space to address safety concerns that regularly arise on the popular trails of Apex Park just outside Golden could limit mountain bikers and hikers, runners and equestrian riders to using those trails only on specific days of the week.

The proposed management plan, which is on the Jeffco Open Space website, would limit use of the park’s Apex Trail, Enchanted Forest Trail, Hardscrabble Trail, Sluicebox Trail and the lower portion of the PickN-Sledge Trail to bike riders on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Hikers, runners and equestrian riders would be able to use those trails on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Open Space has proposed the new plan to cut down on trail conflicts caused by the speed differences between those user groups which can create safety risks. Worsening the situation is the trail’s many narrow sections and blind corners as well as the increasing popularity of those trails.

The Apex and Enchanted Forest Trails are currently subject to directional use rules to attempt to avoid potential conflicts by requiring that bicyclists only ride uphill on the trails on odd numbered days of the month. However, a survey of park visitors conducted in 2019 found that

75 percent of respondents believed a new management strategy was needed at the park, which was up from 50 percent in 2017.

Matt Robbins, a Community Connections Manager at Jeffco Open Space, said the need for a new management strategy on those particular trails was supported by years of both observation by rangers and study.

“This whole discussion is anchored around visitor safety,” Robbins said.

“Conflict doesn’t have to necessarily be one where someone is injured, it could also just be where people feel unsafe.”

The identified trails, which are among the longest in the park feature the highest number of narrow sections, blind corners and other challenging features that contribute to them having the highest rate of conflicts between users.

“It wasn’t of any surprise,” Robbins said. “Some of it is the makeup of the topography, particularly in enchanted forest there are some narrow portions of that trail with some blind corners that lead to some challenges.”

Jeffco Open Space staff members presented the proposal—and received plenty of negative reaction to it—at a public meeting held at Golden’s Origins Hotel Red Rocks on Feb. 26.

Prior to the meeting, the Giddyup released an alternative plan for management of the trails that calls for the Enchanted Forest and Middle/Lower Apex trails, which total 2.6 miles, to be open only to downhill mountain bike traffic on even numbered calendar days. On odd numbered days, those trails would be open to hikers, trail runners, equestrian riders and uphill bikers.

Meanwhile, the Grubstake and Bonanza Trails, which total 1.8 miles, would be open only to hikers, runners and equestrian riders with no bike access on even calendar days while being open to all uses, including downhill mountain biking, on odd numbered days The Golden Giddyup argues that plan is more equitable for all user groups while eliminating all potential for dangerous conflicts by giving bik-

“So what we’ve researched and been told from different user groups is that uphill bike traffic poses no safety concerns it doesn’t pose a threat to these groups because the speed differential is not there,” said Jeff Watrobka, the Executive Director of the Golden Giddyup.

Stuart Cohen, a trail runner who attended the meeting and occasionally runs on the impacted trails, said he is supportive of the day of any management plan being oriented around even and odd calendar days rather than set days of the week.

“I think the even and days of the week are more helpful for people that have very constrained schedules regardless of user group,” he said.

“That’s what I think matters more than who gets the most days and that sort of thing.”

Robbins said Jeffco Open Space is taking all feedback from the meeting and a period that is allowing residents to provide feedback on the plan via email into consideration, including the plan submitted by Giddyup Golden.

However, Robbins also said that regardless of what final plan is settled on, it is likely that some users will be unhappy “This is going to require some level of compromise from all parties and that includes the county and the various visitor groups,” he said.

“We were looking to put a shooter in the corner, have a little dribble penetration and get the kick out,” Vullo said of the play drawn up in an attempt to tie the game in the final seconds. “I think it was a bit of a bad pass, but those things happen.”
