Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center being reorganized following issues Changes will split up facility, reduce overall population

After a tumultuous year that saw two convicted sex offenders escape and both residents and staff members alike injured in multiple incidents, the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center in Golden is being reorganized around a new guiding principal: “smaller is better.”

Staff members of Colorado’s departments of human and youth services announced on Jan. 30 several changes for the center, including a plan to divide it into four smaller separate youth centers and reduce the facility’s total resident population from about 150 to a maximum of 112.

The staff members explained those changes, which are designed to improve both the safety and security of the center and the effectiveness of the treatment services that are offered to the youth offenders that reside there, are being implemented in response to the widely report problems at the center.

Barnes said an outside study had determined three main issues existed at the center that were contributing to the problems it had experienced: the presence of drugs at the center, a need for more focus on basic safety, and the facility’s shift from a correctional model to one oriented around rehabilitation.

DHS staff members said the plan to divide the facility into four youth services centers will attempt to address those issues by reducing the number of other residents and staff members each resident has contact with during the day while facilitating an environment where both staff and residents can create tighter bonds.

Each of the four youth centers will have between 16 and 36 residents.

They will live in pods consisting of 10 to 12 beds inside four separate existing buildings at Lookout Mountain. All of those center residents will attend classes, eat meals and do other activities with the other residents of their center but will not have contact with the other centers.

“You want the youth to bond together to create the safe milieu as well as strong relationships with the staff,” Division of Youth Services Director Anders Jacobson said. “When you disrupt that each and every day and send a whole group of youth to school at one time and they are comingling in recreation-type activities then you are disrupting that cohesiveness and introducing new youth to other youth constantly. We have found that has been one of our big disruptions to get away from.”

The problems that stem from the intermingling have not been a problem at DYS’ other facilities the way they have been at Lookout Mountain, which is one the state’s biggest youth services facilities. That further suggests that it does not make sense to put so many kids together, Jacobson said.

“If somebody said `if Colorado had no youth services centers than what would you build” than you would not see this,” Jacobson said of the Lookout Mountain facility. “But that doesn’t take us away from the philosophy we have in place and that’s really what we’ve put our heads together on

to say `we can’t go out and build four more youth services centers the way we want them’ but we can sure do the philosophy here which is right for kids and right for staff.”

Though the reorganization is one of the biggest changes being made to the center, Barnes said the facility has already implemented new rules, including changes to the search policy and the implementation of random drug dog searches, to address the drug issues. Other changes are aimed at addressing the center’s 40 percent staff turnover rate, which will include increased training and better tools for evaluating candidates to work at the center.

But the staff were clear that as the center moves forward with the new structure and other changes, it will continue to embrace its new model focused on rehabilitation rather than punishment.

“What we know is that punitive interventions with youth are not things that teach them skills so that when they leave us, they can be safe members of the community,” said Perry May, CDHS’ deputy executive director of Health Facilities. “What works with youth is doing an assessment to understand the underlying issues behind their behaviors and then working with them to shape new behaviors so when they leave us, they can be safe in the community.”

But May said that while that shift is ultimately supported by research, there could be more growing pains along the way.

“When you move from a punitive environment to an environment that is more rehabilitative that is a pretty normal reaction for staff to feel like we used to be able to really have control of the kids through these punitive measures and now we are using our relationship and incentives and trying to teach skills to them that can feel out of control,” he said. “But research shows very, very clearly that is a more impactful and successful model.”

Do You Think a Big Down Payment Is Needed to Buy a Home? Think CHFA.

One of the most enduring misconceptions among home buyers is that a large down payment — typically 20% — is required in order to buy a home. Nothing could be further from the truth.

FHA loans only require a 3.5% down payment, although they come with a mortgage insurance requirement which lasts for the life of the loan. Because of that, you’ll need to refinance with a conventional loan once you exceed 20% equity in your new home.

Conventional (non-FHA) loans don’t necessarily require a 20% down payment either. To compete with FHA loans, there are lenders who require as little as 3% down payment, often without mortgage insurance. At that website you’ll learn the complete process involved in getting approved for a CHFA loan. One of the first steps is to take a free half-day buyer education class that covers every aspect of the home buying process as well as ownership responsibilities after closing.

CHFA loans are obtained through mortgage lenders, not from CHFA directly, and Golden Real Estate can connect you with a CHFA-approved lender.

Q&A with astronaut Matthew Dominick Jeffco schools grad a test pilot for NASA, preparing to go to space

Now that you’ve graduated, what’s next?

All of us have ground jobs and we rotate through who’s in space at each time. Right now, I’m working on three new spaceships that haven’t gone to space before. Most of the time, a test pilot is sitting down with engineers and asking questions. We work through how we’re going to launch this for the first time and run scenarios in the simulator.

As NASA prepares for upcoming missions — including the 2024 Artemis mission, through which NASA will build a base at the moon — recent graduates from NASA’s basic training program await their first assignments to space.

The 2017 Class of Astronauts, which graduated at a ceremony in Jan. 2020, included Matthew Dominick, who grew up in Wheat Ridge and graduated from D’Evelyn High School in 2000.

Dominick interviewed with Colorado Community Media about his role at NASA and what the future has in store.

What was your path to becoming an astronaut?

I always wanted to explore and understand the world around me. I think every child has that. I went to the University of San Diego to study engineering and I liked the idea of going fast and flying, so in 2005, I joined the Navy and became a test pilot. I work with a bunch of very incredible people, and then I go home to my wife and two daughters and we continue exploring at home. I’m going to an event with my older daughter this weekend where we’re going to launch rockets with all of her friends. I love watching my daughters’ little minds explore the world.

Making art ELECTRICAL BOXES OUT OF

Local artists add more art to Alameda Corridor

Tom Quinn visualizes the Alameda Corridor in Lakewood being a destination for Lakewood residents and the surrounding region. He wants it to be a place where people come to ride their bikes, walk, recreate, build their local businesses and enjoy themselves.

Part of achieving that vision includes adding art to an unnamed arts and nature trail that runs from Kipling to Sheridan along Alameda.

Finished at the beginning of the month, 12 of Lakewood’s traffic electrical boxes were wrapped up with vinyl on Alameda from Depew to Garrison with art from five local artists and three artists who are based in Wyoming. The concept of the project was to decorate the boxes with naturetheme artwork.

Craig Rouse and Carrie MaKenna, who are married and live in Lakewood, each designed two art pieces for the boxes. The couple owns the LandtMaKenna Galleries studio at the 40 West Arts District and have their art on display throughout Lakewood, including at Lasley Park and Green Gables Park.

Sheriff, county commissioners discuss lingering jail crisis Sheriff warned at meeting that more releases, enhanced arrest standards could be coming soon

When Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Shrader told the county Board of Commissioners that the county was nearing the next stage of its jail crowding crisis, it provided an opportunity for Shrader and the board to discuss the issue and possible solutions.

Shrader addressed the board on Jan. 28,saying that the Sheriff ’s Office was “dangerously close” to needing to implement “enhanced arrest standards” at the county jail Shrader said that the jail’s population had that morning exceeded the 1,172-capacity number at which the jail must begin releasing inmates in order to stay under its capacity.

The sheriff ’s office had previously had to release dozens of jail inmates before their sentences were up on two occasions earlier in the month.

Jail capacity became an issue at the start of the year after the sheriff closed a floor of the jail as part of countywide budget cuts.

Enhanced arrest standards, which involve only booking inmates who have committed certain crimes into the jail, are the next step the department will use to manage the jail population once it has released all the inmates who are eligible to be released early.

Shrader told the commissioners he had already notified local police departments that use the jail about that possibility and had his staff engage them in conversations about strategies for incarcerating fewer people.

“It is conceivable that we get a call when we go into enhanced arrest standards where somebody is breaking into cars, and a deputy sheriff shows up and as they contact that suspect there is a fight to get them apprehended, and when he is apprehended he has multiple credit cards that don’t belong to him, multiple IDs and maybe drugs,” Shrader said.

“None of those will be sufficient enough to book that person into jail under the enhanced arrest standards.”

Shrader said the current situation also has led to “a greater concentration of bad people in the jail” that had resulted in four deputies being assaulted in the last eight weeks.

“That is a bit unprecedented,” Shrader said.

Commissioners ponder solutions Commissioner Casey Tighe said

“Would we do that?” Shrader said of the idea of one county accepting another’s inmates. “We wouldn’t bear the cost of some other county.

The great likelihood is its going to be anywhere be between $75 and $100 a day to house them somewhere else.

Its more expensive to house them somewhere else than to have the staff to house them here.”

Commissioner Lesley Dahlkemper also expressed a desire for the county to attempt to identify new strategies and efficiencies for managing the population and emphasized that it is necessary for the community to see the county attempting to do that.

“We have a community that’s asking us are you looking at innovations, are you looking at efficiencies, how are you prioritizing and what is the rationale behind your decisions?” Dahlkemper said. “I think it’s up to all of us to be able to share those responses so our community isn’t confused and they are clear on why we are making the decisions we are making.”

As of Feb. 10, the Sheriff ’s Office had not had to release inmates since Jan. 21. However, it has come close with inmate population reaching 1,168 on Feb. 10, just two shy of the 1,170 figure that would trigger releases.

that one potential solution would be for the county to focus on allowing more people to bond out of jail after getting arrested through pretrial release.

“Hopefully we can continue to push to have appropriate and safe pretrial standards in order to make sure people are processed through the system quickly and if they can safely be processed though then we cannot have them in the jail as long to keep the jail population at a reasonable number,’ Tighe said.

Tighe also expressed hope that the criminal justice coordinating committee, a group that includes representatives from the police, the District Attorney’s office and other groups that is tasked with addressing jail space issues, could help to promote solutions, including increased usage of pretrial release. Shrader and Tighe are both members of that committee.

Tighe, however, said “progress” on that committee has been glacial for the five years he has been on it and that many of the possible steps to ease the population of the jail are already being utilized. Tighe, in turn, expressed agreement that progress had been slow on the committee but said the jail crisis is introducing a new sense of urgency.

Changing Jeffco school start times would cost millions School board commits to continuing to study later starts for teens

Following years of work to establish later start times across the district, the Reimagining Time Task Force, made up of Jeffco parents and district employees, presented to the school board Feb. 5 with their proposal’s estimated price tag: anywhere from $3 million to $9 million just in the first year, with millions of dollars also needed every year thereafter.

But while “cost is going to drive some of our decision making,” board member Ron Mitchell said at the Feb. 5 study session, research showing the negative mental health effects of early start times spurred the board to unanimously approve holding and exploring the proposal.

In other words, while the board did not commit to immediately funding the proposal, it has committed to discussing the proposal again after further data — including community feedback — has been gathered.

Jeffco parents Katie Winner and Laura Johnson, the taskforce cochairs, pointed to recommendations from several organizations including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Sleep Foundation. The sources suggest adolescent students should not start school before 8:30 a.m., taskforce members said.

“Deficient sleep is a threat to emotional and social well-being,” Johnson said. “We know lack of sleep causes serious mental health problems in adolescents, such as memory impairment and serious consideration of suicide.”

While these were the options presented, Winner said that after more research, the taskforce might consider other options, including taking every school’s current start time and pushing them 30 minutes.

The concerns Board members raised several questions, with board member Brad Rupert suggesting research on cutting initial costs by rolling out the proposal over several years.

Mitchell asked if an 8:30 start time for high schoolers could interfere with after-school activities.

“We need to get high school students home in time to babysit younger brothers and sisters,” he said. “High school students are also in the work world.”

Winner pointed out that in a community survey, there was not a significant number of individuals who named childcare for younger siblings as a concern.

As for the cost, Superintendent Jason Glass said the district has not identified a source of funding for the proposal. Rupert proposed the possibility of reviewing the budget in the future for potential cuts.

“I’m not saying that’s what I would vote for, but I’m saying that’s a choice the board should be making,” he said.

Board members approved a staff recommendation to hold action until the taskforce researches options to reduce the cost.

Eventual action is important, Mitchell said, because no matter the outcome, “the concept has some value for us somewhere.”

What to know about Colorado’s primary elections Contest among presidential hopefuls falls on ‘Super Tuesday’ in March

Colorado is gearing up to hold the state’s first presidential primary in 20 years, and it falls on what political junkies call “Super Tuesday” — when the largest number of states and territories hold a presidential primary or caucus.

This year, it’s March 3.

Steve Hurlbert, spokesman for the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office, said there’s “no question” that Colorado holding its contest on that date will give the state a bigger spotlight in the primary season.

“Where we fall on the calendar is really important,” said Hurlbert, whose office oversees elections. “Also, the nature of what Colorado is: We’re definitely a purple state and (one) that both parties see as up for grabs.”

Here are some important things to know before the primary elections, which will choose parties’ nominees to compete in the November general election. Ballots were to be mailed out

for the March primary the week of Feb. 10.

Back in vogue Colorado’s last presidential primary happened in 2000 — since then, presidential nominees were voted on at caucuses, which are overseen by political parties.

In primary elections, voters submit ballots in favor of their chosen candidate.

A caucus is a system of local gatherings where voters decide which candidate to support — engaging in discussions at places such as highschool gyms — and select delegates that will ultimately cast votes at conventions to nominate candidates.

Hurlbert, referencing the recent news of a chaotic Iowa caucus marred by technological issues, argued the primary system has advantages.

“A primary system is run by the state election officials and not through a political party,” Hurlbert said. “That’s the key thing — they’re done by people who do this for a living and are some of the best at it in the country.”

Unaffiliateds can participate In 2016, Colorado voters passed two initiatives, Propositions 107 and 108, which established a presidential primary system and allowed unaffili-

ated voters to participate in primary elections.

In the typical caucus — and some other states’ primaries — voters are limited to the contest of the party with which they are affiliated.

Colorado’s unaffiliated voters — those not registered to a political party — will receive both parties’ ballots in the mail.

They can only vote and return one ballot, though — if they return both, neither will be counted, Hurlbert noted.

Unaffiliated voters who vote in a party’s primary will remain unaffiliated. However, the primary they in which vote — but not who they voted for — will be a public record.

If there is a minor party contest — for parties other than Democrats and Republicans — those affiliated with that minor party can vote for those candidates.

17-year-olds good to go An interesting aspect of Colorado’s elections this year, Hurlbert said, is that it’s the first year that 17-year-olds who turn 18 by the November election will be able to vote in Colorado’s two primaries (the one for presidential candidates and other in June for more local races).

Voter service and polling centers will be open for the March 3 primary starting Feb. 24. The state also allows same-day registration, so if voters

haven’t registered by March 3, they can register and vote on that day.

Two primaries and a caucus On June 30, the state will hold this year’s other primary election, which selects candidates for offices such as U.S. Senate, U.S. House, state Senate and House, and other regional or local races such as for district attorneys and University of Colorado regents.

There will be an indication of frontrunners in those races before June, though: the caucus, which takes place March 7. Parties will still hold local caucus gatherings to gauge support before the June primary.

The presidential race will not have a caucus, though — only the March 3 primary.

Curiosity is a good cue for 2020

A

re you curious about 2020? I am.

Perhaps you’ve made different and definite New Year’s resolutions for 2020.

I never make resoALCHEMY lutions, although I do make pledges – mostly to myself – throughout the year … even if one is simply to repaint my office, which, by the way turned out to be a much larger project than anticipated.

When considering what workout or exercise routine I’d like to establish – or continue – the answer was easy: cycling. I enjoy road cycling for the (almost) Zen of it – I am always super attentive for inattentive drivers – and I thrive on mountain biking simply

Early this year, a creative agency I work with in Chicago, c:change, sent me a huge poster in one of those tantalizing cardboard tubes that made me curious. Inside, interestingly enough, was a poster about … curiosity.

On the poster, members of the c:change team shared what they had been curious about in 2019. One person tried 10 different kinds of oysters, one explored the world of Harry Potter, and another finally got that rock climbing gym membership.

On the other side of the poster, however, is the intriguing question: “Where will curiosity take you in 2020?”

I nominate Donald Trump for Employee of the Year. I intend to renew his contract in November.

Whoever the candidate is, we have to remove Gardner. Although he bills himself as a “moderate”, Cory Gardner has voted alongside Trump 90% of the time. Gardner has decimated environmental protections, and voted to take away funding for housing for our military families to instead fund “the wall.” Now he has voted to acquit a president who our founders would have removed from office immediately. It is also true that Trump and his PACs have paid thousands of dollars towards Gardner’s re-election campaign. I hope Colorado voters remember all the ways that Gardner has betrayed us and supported Trump when they vote for who will be our next senator.

By about midnight, most of the newsers I was following had given up on getting a straight answer from the Iowa Democratic Party, but it was fairly clear, at that point, who the top two vote-getters were going to be, and who else was still alive. In the long run, the winner of Iowa earned 14 delegates and the 2nd place finisher earned 12, out of 1,990 delegates that the winner will have to earn by the Democratic Convention.

It was, all things considered, meaningless.

Then, Tuesday night’s State of the Union grabbed the attention of all the talking heads for the open and childish feud brewing between President Trump and Nancy Pelosi. He refused to shake her hand, she tore up his speech … all great theater. But, does anybody remember anything of actual substance from the 80-minute speech or anything that came after it? I don’t.

So Donald and Nancy won’t be sharing a Valentine’s Day meal — so what?

Wednesday the foregone conclusion became formalized. No matter what you believe about the substance of the charges against the President or the process the Impeachment went through, there was never, ever a doubt that the Senate would acquit.

A pack of issues regarding wolf restoration

n January, the Secretary of State confirmed there were enough signatures on petitions calling for a public referendum on “restoration of gray wolves” in Colorado. And Friday was little more than a typical antiseptic conversation featuring two old white guys and an old white woman who have been in politics forever, a rich white guy who bought his way onto the stage, a younger white guy and white woman from the middle of the country, and a young Asian man who’s never been in politics before. For what? 24 delegates, roughly 1.2% of what the winner will need to earn. Sure, there will be story lines coming out after Tuesday, but not much else.

Here’s the thing: all of the energy, drama, and angst — not to mention the television time and news division budgets — all amount to nothing.

Zero. Zilch. Nada. Bupkus.

It is all theater. It is all for show. No matter how clever Nancy Pelosi’s act

should take interest and follow the process in the interest of our state.

Let’s hope the process seriously considers the variety of factors and specific conditions that exist in Colorado Today. The big reality is we are living in the 21st century, with a significant difference in human population and in some cases, a diminishing population of deer and elk game prey, that wolf packs consume as prey. Let me offer some issues to consider, some “food for thought” that are important to consider in the reintroduction study process.

We need to be knowledgeable of wildlife populations in today’s 21st century as compared to the mid1890s and 1900s; tabulate the vast raw back country open land and the more marginal big game herds of the early years. Study how other growing wolf populated states such as Montana, Idaho and Wyoming are dealing with this restoration issue; be aware of the successes and/or failures of their efforts of restoration balance of these issues in a changing environment, as well as population of wild game herds over a century in a changing environment.

Look at the changing popularity of big game hunting and public wildlife observation programs, as an economic issue in Colorado.

Consider the major impact that livestock growers face from this predator and likely changing reintroduction impact on mountain communities today. Today’s lesser open range suggest possible new conflicts of livestock and wildlife.

The one single most significant factor in this uncertain wild game predator/prey question is to build in

flexibility in how to control wolf pack “populations.” Wolf populations will surely expand, likely in a significant way and impact the populations of the elk and deer prey wildlife numbers.

Reintroduction without population controls will result in serious problems as time moves forward.

This issue is not just a wildlife issue, it is an economic issue, a wildlife observer issue and a matter of committing to controlling a balance of the wildlife species. Too often, once an absent wildlife specie is reintroduced there is no control nor commitment on the population and expansion and that can result in the loss of the prey specie.

The wolf reintroduction question warrants a watchful eye on how these other factors are identified and considered in the coming process.

Environmental benefit, vintage popularity boost interest in thrift stores

rvada resident Eddie Marin has a passion for finding vintage items, and he shops at thrift stores at least twice a week. He looks for vintage sports T-shirts, old VHS tapes, hats, sweaters and more. Marin has found Star Wars lunchboxes from 1980, original Wheaties cereal boxes that feature Michael Jordan and vintage golf cleats from the early 1990s.

He’ll keep some of the items he’ll find at thrift stores, usually Denver Nuggets and Jordan apparel, or he’ll sell them at ThriftCon, a vintage clothing and collectible convention

that takes places in Denver.

“Every vintage T-shirt or piece of clothing is unique. Nowadays, everyone uses the same designs and same material for their items,” said Marin.

“Everything (from) back in the day feels much better, I think.”

Marin’s passion for vintage apparel and items is an example of why thrift stores have become more popular, according to Elena Karpova, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Department of Consumer, Apparel and Retail Studies.

The online resale marketplace thredUP estimates the resale market in 2018 hit $24 billion. Other than vintage apparel being trendy, Karpova says there’s another drive for interest in thrift stores — helping the environment.

“You continuously hear about climate change and people realize, in my opinion, that we should do something about it. While few of us are able to make big sweeping

ne of the best things about the Denver Museum of Nature & Science is how it brings a world of discovery into one place. No matter what your interest is, there’s an exhibit for you.

But this summer, the museum is taking people out into the world to do some exploring.

Beginning on the weekend of June 12, and stretching into July, the museum is hosting four multi-day river excursions, which pairs an expert in a certain field — paCOMING leontology, ecosysATTRACTIONS tems, astronomy and geology — with people interested in getting out in the wild.

“If you like the water and the outdoors, river trips are spectacular ways to discover them,” said Dr. Ian Clarke Reader Miller, who will be leading the geology excursion on the Green River in Utah and Colorado, July 22-26.

“What’s so cool about them is you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world, get closer to nature and learn about the planet.”

The tours are hosted through a partnership with Centennial Canoe Outfitters and represent another way the museum is looking to get families and people of all ages involved in education, conservation and preservation of the natural world.

“As a geologist and paleontologist, the area is just a total playground,” Miller said. “I know from working in the area that the river snakes through the Mesozoic, so we’ll be going back 100 to 200 million years.”

Centennial provides attendees with an extensive list of items that should be brought along, including a sleeping bag and tent.

One of his favorite parts about exploring nature by water is attendees will get to see remote places that could otherwise only be accessed by some intense hiking trails. And while canoeing is far from a passive mode of travel, there’s plenty of time to appreciate the surroundings.

“It’s really a quiet, serene and yet exciting glimpse into our world,” Miller said. “We won’t be on any super-fast rapids or anything, so that meandering approach means it’s very social. You can talk with other travelers or be not. It can be really introspective.”

For the educational side of things, Miller said guides will point out interesting features of the landscape as everyone travels downriver, and evenings will feature “fireside chats” on the trip’s topic of focus.

Social media has charged consumers to purchase new and cool trendy items, Karpova says in the book she helped co-author “Going Global: The Textile and Apparel Industry.” The demand for those items has led to fast fashion — cheap clothing made by mass-market retailers responding to what is trendy. Think of stores like H&M, Forever 21 and others.

The result of fast fashion leads to clothing becoming disposable like plastic bags, plastic utensils and paper plates, and according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a charity that works to accelerate the transition to a circular economy, one garbage truck of clothes is burned or landfilled every second.

“What is fashionable? Our perception has to change,” said Karpova.

“If being sustainable and environmentally friendly becomes fashionable, it will completely change the consumption patterns. Just shopping secondhand isn’t going to solve it, but if I’m not buying new and I’m buying secondhand instead, I prevent clothing from going to the landfill.”

Great Depression-era safe now on display in treasurer’s office Lack of bank access led county to purchase the safe in 1933

At the height of the Great Depression, the Jefferson County Commissioners authorized the county’s treasurer to purchase a 4,000-pound safe.

“They bought it because of the stock market crash,” said current Jefferson County Commissioner Jerry DiTullio.

“They weren’t putting money in banks anymore, so they actually bought the safe so they could put gold and silver in it.”

That safe, which was made up of extra thin magnesium steel walls that were harder to blow up with dynamite, remained in the Treasurer’s office for decades before eventually being moved into a storage facility.

And that’s where it would remain until last year, when DiTullio took office and learned about the existence of the safe from Mark Hubbard, a Treasurer’s office employee who remembered the safe being in the Treasurer’s office when he started his career there around 30 years ago.

That story piqued DiTullio’s interest, so the two made a trip to the county facility where the safe was

PAUL ALBANI-BURGIO being stored. When they found it was still in excellent condition, DiTullio resolved that it should be moved into the current Treasurer’s office, where it could be viewed and enjoyed by those who come to the office, giving them a window into its history.

“You come into the county building and there’s a lot of historical information about the Clerk & Recorder and elections and past county commissioners,” DiTullio said. “But there really

isn’t anything about the Treasurer’s office at all, even though we are an integral part of the county operation, because we are the county banker and we collect and disperse almost a billion dollars a year in taxes.”

Since the relocation of the safe to the office, DiTullio has kept it stocked with gold chocolate coins that are free for visitors to take (he notes that he pays for the chocolate himself rather than using taxpayer funds). He hopes

making the coins available for withdrawal makes for a more pleasant visitor experience.

“When people come into the office they are usually paying their taxes or having to deal with something else like that and so we are trying to make the office as friendly and compassionate as possible,” he said.

DiTullio’s administrative assistant, Natalie Townsend, said the safe has been a big hit, with some even coming to the office specifically to visit the safe after hearing about it.

“We get a lot of people asking about it and they are always like `wow, that’s what held all that money during that time?’ and we are like `yeah, isn’t that crazy?’” Townsend said. “People think it looks like a washing machine.”

The relocation of the safe was particularly exciting for the county’s archivist, Ronda Frazier, who recently worked with Townsend to dig into the history of the safe in order to create a collage of historical documents relating to it. That collage, which includes the county contract to purchase the safe from Denver’s Charpiot Safe Company, will be displayed alongside the safe in the Treasurer’s office once it is finished being framed.

“It’s just a really, really cool piece of history to have on display,” Frazier said of the safe. “And now it has been in all three Jefferson County buildings, which is kind of a neat thing too.”

Among the couple’s designs along Alameda for the boxes include a piece created by Rouse that features Colorado fish like trout and bluegill swimming in an aquarium and a design that showcases the different ways Coloradans get around town during the summer like skateboarding, cycling and jogging — created by MaKenna.

“Anytime there’s artwork around, it brightens people’s day. It makes them look and see and think about things,” said MaKenna. “This is the practicality (of the Alameda traffic electrical boxes), but one of the things it does is keep graffiti off of these things. It helps to keep the neighborhood clean and beautiful for the people that live there.”

With the addition of 12 pieces of art, the Alameda Corridor is now home to 29 different pieces of art, Quinn said.

The project was funded by the Alameda Corridor Business Improvement District.

“The redevelopment of that entire area of the new bike path, the new landscaping that they’ve done — I think it’s just going to enhance that experience that people will have.

Hopefully (the traffic electrical boxes) will draw more people to enjoy it, rather than drive by it,” said Rouse.

“It’s nice to be able to use the blank canvasses of these metal boxes and to supply some refreshing graphics on them that are bright and colorful.”

Alameda isn’t able to derail Conifer’s path to a league title

LAKEWOOD — Conifer’s boys basketball team has worked its way into a familiar position.

The Lobos (13-5, 5-0 in Class 4A/3A Colorado 8 League) are two conference victories away from winning a league title for the second straight year.

“The goal is to win out and win the league,” Conifer senior Landon Wallace said. “We want those back-to-back league championships and bring those back to the school. Then come into the state tournament with some momentum.”

A 63-37 road win over Alameda International on Feb. 6 sets up Conifer with two huge games next week that will decide the conference champion.

The Lobos are at Fort Lupton (11-3, 5-0) on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and host Weld Central (12-6, 4-1) on Thursday, Feb. 13, to wrap up league play.

“That would be our goal no matter what league we are in,” Conifer coach Eric Valerio said about finishing off this 4-year run in the Colorado 8 League before the Lobos return to the 4A Jeffco League for the 2020-21 season.

nifer against Alameda, who will also return to the 4A Jeffco League next season. The Pirates (1-17, 0-5) stayed within striking distance for the majority of the game.

Sophomore Justin Le scored a

team-high 13 points for Alameda. The Pirates trailed 26-23 at halftime.

“The second quarter we just got sloppy and kind of slow,” Wallace said.

“At halftime we just all got together and focused on what we needed to get done. In the second half there was a lot more intensity and the energy was a lot higher.”

Wallace is nearly averaging a double-double this season in points and assists. The senior captain is someone who Valerio relies on a lot and it was no different Thursday night.

“When you have great leaders and a senior point guard (Wallace) that is a four-year starter, he set the tone at halftime. I didn’t have to say much,” Valerio said. “I proud of the way they responded. We’ve got to find a way to play 32 minutes if we want to be an elite level team.”

Conifer put the game away in the fourth quarter outscoring Alameda 24-4. Seniors Ocean Hageman, Elijah Cook and Wallace combined for 48 points in the Lobos’ 5th straight victory.

“We had a good talk in the locker room about playing as a team and coming together,” said Hageman, who finished with a game-high 18 points. “I think we really executed.”

COLLEGE-BOUND RAMS

Heading down the final stretch, Conifer will have experience on its side — both good and bad. While the Lobos captured a conference title and went into the 4A state tournament last season as the No. 24 seed and on an 8-game winning streak, Conifer was bounced out of the playoffs in the opening round.

“We were really upset about that,” Wallace said reflecting on the 57-53 home loss in the opening round of the 4A state tournament last year to Eagle Valley.

Conifer did get a measure of revenge against Eagle Valley earlier this season. The Lobos defeated the Devils by 40 points in the final game at the Steamboat Springs Tournament back in mid-December.

That season-ending playoff loss definitely gave this year’s squad some motivation.

“After that loss we kind of build this grit in us about working hard in the off-season together,” Hageman said.

“We want to push and achieve more this year. We are ready for it.”

Colorado School of Mines football signed 31 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Feb. 5, welcoming the next generation of players to Marv Kay Stadium.

‘Colorado-style’ barbecue restaurant to open on South Golden Road Roaming Buffalo Bar-B-Que to serves ribs, brisket, lamb and more

When Lakewood couple Rachael and Coy Webb were making plans to open their own barbecue restaurant, they considered locations in small towns and mountain communities that exuded the kind of community feel they wanted to cultivate in their new establishment.

But a desire to remain close to Rachael’s family in Lakewood led the couple to stay put and the couple ended up opening Roaming Buffalo Bar-BQue on a retail strip in southwest Denver.

But with that restaurant having just celebrated its five-year anniversary, the couple has now set their sights on opening a second Roaming Buffalo in a location that boasts many of the attributes of the communities they still sought out while still being an easy commute from their homes: Golden.

“Growing up I’ve always loved Golden,” Rachael said. “I was ecstatic when I was able to look out our windows and see the mountains.”

There is also a selection of sandwiches and sides plus alcoholic drinks, including margaritas.

Location: 17121 South Golden Road Planned Opening: Late February Golden Road, serves a style of barbecue that is rooted in Coy’s native Texas.

“We call ourselves Colorado craft barbecue and we find ourselves to be pretty unique,” she said. “It’s definitely Texas-style in terms of being dry rubbed with sauce on the side but we have a flavor profile all our own.”

The restaurant also serves several Colorado meats in addition to classics like ribs, brisket and pork that Rachael says were traditionally used for barbecue early in Colorado’s history, including lamb, bison ribs and green chili and venison sausages. The available sides also have a southwestern flair as the macaroni and cheese contains poblano peppers while the coleslaw is made with cilantro and lime.

The 1,800-seat Dickey’s space is nearly double the size of Roaming Buffalo’s Denver restaurant and Rachael said the expanded space will allow it to be open for dinner and serve alcohol, which are not impossible in Denver. The options will include beer

and wine but also agave margaritas and other fun drinks.

The Denver location has garnered strong views on Yelp, where the average rating is 4.5 stars out of 5.

The restaurant has generated strong reviews in local media with Westword food writer naming it one of the top 100 Denver restaurants of 2019 last year.

“Roaming Buffalo has almost singlehandedly created a style of barbecue that Denver can call its own,” Westword food writer Mark Antonation wrote of Roaming Buffalo Bar-B-Que. But while the restaurant has built up a following in Denver, Golden restaurant owner and Chamber of Commerce Chairman Dean Valdez said the degree to which Roaming Buffalo succeeds in Golden will likely come down to what Goldenites make of the quality of their food and service.

“I don’t think it matters if it’s from Denver or a chain account like Dickey’s that’s what it all comes down to at the end of the day,” Valdez said.

The new Roaming Buffalo Bar-BQue will also be the latest addition to a Golden dining scene that had seen the addition of the new Tributary Food Hall, Smiley’s Smokehouse sandwich shop and Valdez’s own Bella Colibri Italian restaurant downtown.

It’s an expansion in options that is good for residents but does provoke some concerns for Valdez, who says he is worried not about his own businesses but the health of the scene as a whole.

“I’m worried about an oversaturation,” Valdez said. “The restaurant business is very expensive and there aren’t big margins and I think if we keep expanding we risk certain restaurants going out of business.”
