full of work and we had to feed them all the same day, put them on record. I remember we had to type for indexing on typewriters. And then it started changing over the years and now we have electronic recording so not as much paperwork.

But in the earlier years, it seems like everything was smoother and we all pitched in and worked together.

There’s been a lot of changes. People just worked together and it’s not like it is now. Employees were just more easygoing I think. Maybe they just weren’t as stressed as they are now.

I started working at the Clerk and Recorder’s Office in ‘70. So, we lived in Denver nine years and then we bought a house in Jefferson County in ‘77. I just came out and applied and they hired me right away.

I also worked in Delta County three years before I moved here with the county clerk’s office there. Back then, I Just wanted to get a job. So, they hired me for the renewal and license plates in January and then after that they asked me if I wanted to stay in recording so I said yes.

When I first started our office was in downtown Golden by the School of Mines. It was just upstairs and we had a small area for recording and then the front counter we took in documents and wrote marriage licenses standing up. And I remember they’d bring the inmates over in order to get married. We used to do that. (Note: This is no longer done — inmates now are required to do so via absentee affidavits.) After that I remember they moved us down in the basement in the old building so we could have more room and all the records were kept in the vault. Some of the people worked in the vault.

Terrell Davis, John Elway, (Steve) Atwater. Now I like Justin Simmons, (Phillip) Lindsay and Von Miller. And hopefully Drew Lock will be good. I’m optimistic about next year. I hope we do better.

The Broncos cake I got for my party was really nice. I sent a picture to my son in Wyoming.

50 years and counting Everybody’s always asking me when I’m going to retire. My answer to that is that I am day by day now. Some days I think I am ready and some days I’m not. Just have to wait and see. I’ve really enjoyed working here.

Three gang members found guilty in 2018 murder

A Jefferson County jury has returned guilty verdicts for firstdegree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the cases of three men charged with murdering 28-year-old Cymone Reyna Duran in

November 2018.

Abel Candy Gallegos, 36; Alonso Quintana, 28; and Rene Francisco Rosales, 36, were each found guilty of several crimes at the end of a threeweek trial that included 50 witnesses and over 400 pieces of evidence.

Gallegos and Quintana’s convictions included two counts of first-degree

murder, second-degree kidnapping and retaliation against a witness or victim. Rosales was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder in the first-degree, tampering with a deceased body tampering with physical evidence.

The men were charged about 10 days after Duran’s body was discovered at the intersection of Nile Street and West Seventh Avenue near the intersection of I-70 and West Colfax Avenue on Nov. 5, 2019.

According to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office, Duran had identified Quintana in a line-up for a shooting she had witnessed in Adams County.

The three men, who were members of a gang, labeled Duran a snitch.

a parking lot where he met Quintana and the two men assaulted her in the backseat of a car.

They then drove Duran to Golden where they shot her 10 times before pouring gasoline on her body and setting it on fire. Firefighters responding to a brush fire discovered Duran’s burning body at 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 5.

On Jan. 31, Jude Philip McNulty sentenced Gallegos to the maximum

possible sentences for all of his nine charges, including the mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder. The total sentences for his other added up to another 163 years in prison. 4 “There is absolutely nothing mitigating about this case,” McNulty said to Gallegos in explaining his sentence.

“It may be symbolic but I am going to impose the maximum sentence just because you deserve it.”

McNulty also addressed the family of Duran, telling them that “it is disturbing to me that she was murdered because she did the right thing” in stepping up to be a witness in an attempted murder case, before turning his attention to Gallegos.

“I don’t know that there was any

regret at all and I don’t think there ever will be,” McNulty said. “A life sentenced is entirely deserved in this case. You can’t live among us anymore.”

McNulty also scolded the family and friends of Gallegos who could be heard crying in the courtroom as he read his verdict.

“We have people sobbing today,” he said. “If there are any tears they should be shed for Mrs. Duran. She didn’t have a choice. Mr. Gallegos did.”

As he was led out of the courtroom, Gallegos turned to his supporters and said to them “I love you all. I’m sorry.”

Quintana and Rosales’ sentencing hearings are set for Feb. 24 at 8 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. respectively.

Big Entities Target Mobile Home Parks, the Last Bastion of Affordable Living

I just finished watching John Oliver’s riff on mobile homes. If you’re not familiar with his HBO show “Last Week Tonight” or don’t get HBO, the good news is that his single topic take-outs* are archived on YouTube, so just Google “John Oliver mobile homes” and you’ll be glued to your computer screen for an unending series of take-outs that only starts with his take-out on mobile homes.

Here’s what I learned from watching John Oliver’s piece and was able to confirm by talking to others. Sometimes I wish I could be a full-time journalist again so I could really do investigative reporting, but I’m a Realtor now and have to depend on others like John Oliver and David Migoya of the Denver Post doing the heavy lifting. So, instead, Google is my friend. And there’s so much to learn just by Googling.

The big trend in mobile homes is the influx of big corporations like Warren Buffett’s Clayton Homes in the mobile home park business. Historically, such parks were “mom and pop” operations, but it was

inevitable that mom and pop got old and, even if their children had an interest in taking over the family business, it was more profitable to sell the park to a developer or to a company like Clayton Homes.

What makes a mobile home park a great investment is that, while people own their mobile or “manufactured” home, they rent or lease the land on which it sits. The land owner can raise the rental fee without limit because, while the home can technically be moved, it would cost thousands of dollars to do so, and there’s little choice of where to move it. You can’t just buy a lot somewhere and put your mobile home on it. I checked with Jefferson County, and you can only install a mobile home on land zoned for mobile home parks. That rule feeds right into the greed motivating those corporations which, like Clayton Homes, are buying up every mobile home park they can.

Another thing about mobile homes is that, while they can be really nice when they’re brand new, they

Prior to the oil embargo of 1973, home builders did not concern themselves much with making homes energy efficient, but that all changed as we quickly realized how dependent we were on foreign countries for fossil fuels to heat our homes and fuel our cars. Homes built before then were poorly insulated, drafty and less healthy. (Lead-based paint was only banned in 1978.)

The passive house concept took off in America as a result of that wake-up call. The “Lo-Cal” house created in 1976 consumed 60% less energy than the standard house at the time, and the concept continues to mature.

If you participated in any of the “green home” tours we co-sponsor each fall, you have learned about various passive home strategies in addition to the more common “active” strategies such as solar power, heat

pumps, geothermal heating, and energy recovery ventilators.

When “active” systems are incorporated in a home with passive house design, they work more easily to create the ultimate goal of a “net zero energy” home — one which generates all the energy needed to heat, cool and power the home and, perhaps, charge the owner’s electric vehicles. Without passive house design features, you can still achieve net zero energy, but it may require substantially more solar power to compensate for such factors as inferior orientation, fenestration (windows) and insulation.

Passive House Technology Underlies Going ‘Net Zero Energy’

do not appreciate in value like regular homes. Rather, they decline in value like a car or like the “personal property” they are. Also, since they’re not “real property,” you can’t get a mortgage on them for 4% over 30 years, you get a chattel loan at 15% over a shorter term.

Thus, if a mobile home owner can’t afford an increase in land rental for their home, their only choice often is to simply abandon the home that they paid thousands of dollars to buy. Since it becomes abandoned property, the mobile park owner can then assume ownership of it, or scrape it depending only on what makes financial sense. And down the road (so to speak), they can kick out the remaining occupants and sell the entire mobile park to a developer.

This is a heartless process, but it’s how our free enterprise system works. So, what can be done about it?

Last month, Golden United sponsored a public meeting on the subject of manufactured housing which I attended, along with several city councilors and civic minded people. Sadly, only a handful of the attendees were residents of a mobile home park.

The main presentation was by an organization which organizes residents of mobile homes parks to form an owner’s association which might then outbid other buyers of the park when the current owner attempts to sell it. This organization, called Resident Owned Communities (ROC), was featured briefly in John Oliver’s piece.. (Fast forward to 13:10.)

What local governments could do to address the problem, Oliver said, was to legislate a “right of first refusal” by which an owner’s association or other nonprofit entity serving the interests of mobile home park owners, would be able to match any bona fide offer by a for-profit buyer, and purchase the mobile home park.

I’m not aware of any such legislation or other public policy aimed at protecting what is, after all, the last bastion of affordable housing in most cities.

Mobile home parks have few friends among owners of conventional real estate, but however you might feel about them, I hope you feel they are worth preserving.

A humbling and heartbreaking experience Jeffco participates in annual count of area homeless people

Robert sat with a blanket and a few jackets on outside an Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill + Bar on a 32-degree night, in Lakewood on Jan. 27. Across the street from him sat his bike, locked to a pole along with all of his belongings. Among them are tools that he yearns to use again for his former profession — carpentry.

He’s homeless and doesn’t want to go to a shelter, because he fears of somebody stealing those belongings.

So he stays on the streets in Lakewood.

“All I want to do is get work, and everybody just wants your information, but nobody wants to put you to work.

All everybody ever did was take my number and not put me to work,” said Robert. “It’s just frustrating.”

Robert was part of the 2020 pointin-time survey, an annual count to find how many people are homeless during one point in time of the year.

The survey took place on Jan. 27 and Jan. 28 across the state, including in Jefferson, Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder and Douglas counties, as well as in

Aurora and in the cities and counties of Denver and Broomfield.

Last year, the survey found 434 people experiencing homelessness in Jefferson County. Results from this year’s count won’t be available for months as data is entered and duplicate entries removed.

The count is conducted by various organizations in Colorado, including faith-based groups, government organizations and human-service organizations like Family Tree. The Jefferson County organization works with people affected by child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness.

Cassie Ratliff, programs director of the homelessness program at Family Tree, has participated in nine pointin-time surveys. This year, she spent time wandering up and down Colfax as well as areas of Edgewater to count homeless people. She says the count helps organizations understand what type of resources are needed to help those in need.

“The (point-in-time survey) is always a humbling and heartbreaking experience. You get to meet people and talk to them in their world,” said Ratliff. “No survey is perfect, but you still try to bring in an accurate number. I feel good that we covered a lot of square miles in Jeffco.”

“magnet events” where they offered food, blankets, clothing and services to the homeless. The magnet events are intended to help obtain a more accurate count of homeless people. This year, there were five magnet events hosted in Adams County and three events in Jefferson County, according to the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative — the organization that puts

together events and trains residents who conduct the survey.

“You freeze, you stink, and you’re not welcome in a lot of places. (Donations) help,” said April Lopez, a homeless woman who stays in the Lakewood area. She attended a magnet event that was hosted by Family Tree at a parking lot at 6467 W. Colfax.

“All these things that are provided are very nice. I’m very grateful for that,” Lopez continued.

“Sometimes what somebody thinks is trash helps a lot of other people.”

Lakewood puts together the puzzle of its growth cap Seven-hour council meeting leads to more clarification for Lakewood’s growth cap

Lakewood City Council’s task at the Jan. 27 meeting was to establish its permitting system for allocations and to define what it means for a property to be blighted.

Here are three things that happened at the meeting that lasted over seven hours.

During a Lakewood City Council meeting on Jan. 27 that pieced together the nuts and bolts of the city’s growth cap, Councilmember Mike Bieda expressed the complexity of the ordinance.

“It can be simplified real easily by saying well it’s 1% growth and review by council with anything over 40 (units), but it’s not that simple. There’s (15) pages of text, and you can imagine there are many nuances involved in this ordinance,” said Bieda.

The growth cap, passed by Lakewood voters on July 2, requires Lakewood City Council to hold a public hearing and vote to approve residential projects with 40 units or more, and it restricts new home construction to 1% of Lakewood’s current housing supply.

But the growth cap isn’t that simple. The 15-page document that establishes the guidelines of the growth cap includes language that requires developers to receive allocations for a building permit and a condition that encourages redevelopment

Proposed White Fence Farm apartment complex faces more uncertainty There were four projects that had applications accepted for building permits before the growth cap became official — but they still haven’t received building permits yet.

Those four projects, which include the proposed Novel at White Fence Farm apartment complex, would’ve amounted to 1,075 units being built in Lakewood.

All of those projects are guaranteed to receive allocations for building permits, except the Novel at White Fence Farm project because of the uncertainty it faces.

The proposed project, which would see the former White Fence Farm restaurant turn into a 235-unit multifamily apartment complex, went before Lakewood’s Board of Adjustment last month after a residential group filed an appeal, alleging the project would violate an official development plan for the Wilson Property. The Wilson Property is an 80-acre piece of land at Jewell

Boulevard that includes White Fence Farm at 6263 W. Jewell Ave. The Board of Adjustment split a vote on Jan. 22 over if the apartment complex would violate the official development plan — and in doing so, the residential group’s appeal failed.

Mike Beery, a member of the residential group known as Unified Under the Wilson Property ODP, said at the Jan. 27 meeting that if necessary, the group will take its argument to a district court.

In July, Lakewood City Council approved a resolution to allow for all development projects as of July 12 that had properly completed necessary documentation to continue without having to obtain an allocation until Dec. 31 of last year, including those who had not received a building permit. The Novel at White Fence Farm project is in the concept phase of review and has been submitted for approval for the city.

Lakewood City Council voted in favor of allowing the three projects, lo-

cated at 66 S. Van Gordon, 730 Simms and 2275 S. Wadsworth, to move forward, excluding the Novel at White Fence Farm project. The vote will hold the project from having guaranteed allocations, and therefore, subjecting it to a public hearing and council vote of approval.

“This project has issues that are no secret. We all know about the Board of Adjustment, the litigation, the (appeal), everything that is going on with it and before that, we heard about their status with planning and so forth,” said Lakewood City Councilmember David Skilling.

“It has not done everything that (the July resolution) had envisioned. What we can’t do is placehold that project for some indefinite amount of time,” Skilling added.

Dividing up those 840 units by the three years the city is granting allocations to for the three projects gave the city a number of 280 units. After coming to that number, Lakewood subtracted those 280 units from the 693 allocations that would’ve been available for 2020. That gave the city the number of 413 allocations that will be available in 2020 and tentatively for 2021 and 2022.

“It levels it out over a longer period so that we do get more opportunity to meet the diverse needs of our housing as they are evolving (over the threeyear period),” said Lakewood City Councilmember Charley Able at the Jan. 27 meeting.

conditions survey would be presented to Lakewood City Council at a public hearing by the property owner and the independent consultant.

After the presentation, council would then determine if the property is blighted, based on urban renewal law.

Some of Lakewood City Council expressed their desires to possibly add amendments to the resolution in the future to make it more tailored to Lakewood’s needs.

“We should allow (the growth ordinance) to turn its way through here for a while. We’ve finally gotten to a point where we’re going to implement it,” said Lakewood City Councilmember Ramey Johnson. “For us to be looking at differences in the (blight resolution) at this point, I think is premature, number one. And number two, I am concerned with people asking to have their property blighted voluntarily. I feel like we’re creating a loophole and it’s going to be a way to circumvent (the growth ordinance). I can’t support this as it is.”

Open Space could take over fairgrounds Davis to reccomend that option to county commissioners as discussions continue

A 4-H staff member’s idea to transfer responsibility for the Jefferson County Fairgrounds from the county general fund to Jefferson County Open Space could be a “very viable possibility” for keeping at least some portions of the fairgrounds running, Jefferson County Manager Don Davis said during a public meeting on Jan. 28.

Davis’ statements came in response to a comment made by Jefferson County 4-H Mentor Program Coordinator Lisa Stavig during a meeting held at the fairgrounds to provide residents and fairgrounds stakeholders a chance to brainstorm and share ideas to save the fairgrounds, which the county has been considering as it prepares to make $12.5 million in cuts to its general fund.

Stavig’s idea was for Jefferson County Open Space to take responsibility for the fairgrounds and then enter into an agreement with a non-profit organization that would be responsible for running it. A similar model

restrictions on revenue as the general fund that have led to the need to make budget cuts to that fund while also currently hamstringing the fairground’s ability to take in revenue from events held there because that revenue counts against that cap.

“This general fund has to do what only government can do and I think a foundation can run this and maybe do

better,” Stavig said.

Davis said he agreed with that assertion. Toward the end of the meeting, he told the crowd that had filled the Green Mountain conference room inside the Fairground’s Exhibit Hall to well past capacity for the second straight week that he planned to tell the county commissioners that he was now planning to recommend that the commissioners pursue transferring the fairgrounds to Jefferson County Open Space at their meeting on Feb. 4.

would save the general fund $1.8 million, if a viable option for keeping the facility operating without continuing to burden the general fund could not be identified.

“The status quo doesn’t get us there, an enterprise doesn’t get us there and shutting down the fairgrounds is not a good option,” Davis said as he explained why he would make that recommendation. “So coming up an answer that involves [Jefferson County Open Space director] Tom Hoby and his staff and how we can come up with some viable solution will be my recommendation to the board moving forward.”

Buildings an obstacle But while Davis and Hoby, who also spoke at the meeting, agreed that such an option could likely provide a workable solution for keeping the fairgrounds open, they both said such a course of action could also present challenges that would likely require the fairgrounds to look and operate differently than it currently does.

“We are very building averse because buildings cost a lot of money to run,” Hoby said of Jefferson County Open Space. “That’s one of the concerns we have when we acquire any property and when you look at the fairgrounds budget $525,000 of it is interdepartmental expenses which is largely to operate buildings.”

Both Davis and Hoby agreed that that reality would likely mean that ownership of only the buildings at the fairgrounds that are most essential to the agriculture and horse activities residents have indicated they are most concerned about protecting would likely be able to be included in a deal with Jefferson County Open Space.

“This would be an effort to make sure that we retain the essential services out here based on community input,” Davis said. “Now I can guarantee you that the answer won’t be the entire fairgrounds. But to make

Another potential challenge would be requirements in the rules governing Jefferson County Open Space that any activities held at the fairgrounds would need to be “not-for-profit.”

However, Hoby said it would likely be possible for the fairgrounds to charge a fee for some activities to be held at the fairgrounds that are consistent with Jefferson County Open Space’s community mission.

Both Hoby and Davis also suggested that “the devil would likely be in the details” when it came to the impact such a plan would have but that the process to transfer the fairgrounds would seek to iron out those types of issues as much as possible. However, that process would require a serious effort to determine what is most important at the fairgrounds and prioritizing a way forward based on those determinations “If we are going to say all of it then we are still at square one,” Davis said.

“If we are going to say these things are the most important and then prioritize as we go through that’s where we get to preserving the things that are most important and talking about what to do with the things that are not important.”

A perfect place for those who love cats and toes

rnest Hemingway kept sixtoed cats at his home, now a museum, in Key West, Florida.

They’re called “polydactyl cats.”

The Ernest QUIET Hemingway Home and Museum curDESPERATION rently has 40-50 polydactyl cats roaming around.

Cats normally have five front toes and four back toes.

Six-toed cats were often taken on ships for two reasons: They were good at ridding rodents, and Craig Marshall they were thought Smith to be lucky.

Hemingway was given his first polydactyl cat, named Snow White,

by a ship captain.

In general, people are thought to prefer dogs or cats, not both.

I prefer dogs, and I prefer a specific breed. I am on my fourth (and final) Dachshund.

I don’t hold much with folklore, as fascinating as it is. I doubt if Hexe, Badger, Smitty or Harry have brought me greater luck than the fortune of knowing them.

Harry has allergies. Determining what they were was expensive.

Bloodwork was done and sent to a laboratory in Mesa, Arizona. The results came back in a book that looked like the one Ralph Edwards used to read from on “This Is Your Life.”

There were pages of possible allergies with checked and unchecked boxes next to them.

The main culprit, we determined,

was oats.

But there were others: rap music, Fox News, hat check girls who wear tons of makeup, and wedding receptions.

Harry now eats a prescription diet. The dry and hard food cannot be purchased without a prescription.

He takes a pill a day too.

None of this has brought me luck.

But, as I said, knowing him does.

How does your dog or cat look to you these days?

My guess is your dog or cat looks better than ever.

Harry and I read the newspaper together each and every morning.

I look at the front page and moan, groan, mumble and mutter, and all he does is give me two brown eyes that shine with the bliss of joyful ignorance.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Pass ROPA Colorado’s national parks are seeing record visitation, but unreliable funding over the years means their infrastructure desperately needs to be repaired.

That’s why I am encouraged by a bipartisan proposal in Congress to address the nearly $12 billion in national parks deferred maintenance. The Restore Our Parks Act (ROPA) would set aside $6.5 billion over the next five years to fix dilapidated trails, buildings, roads, bridges, monuments, and historic markers in our parks. Amazingly, 50 U.S. Senators — from both parties — are cosponsoring this effort, with 330 representatives supporting a similar measure in the House.

With all this support, you would think this would be an easy thing for Congress to get done. You’d be mistaken. Despite all the support for national parks, Congress is still struggling to enact this popular legislation.

There is still time, and I hope they can get it done. Sens. Gardner and Bennet are both cosponsors of the Restore Our Parks Act, and Gardner especially is in a key position of leadership to help bring the bill to a vote. We need to see action to ensure our parks stay open, safe, and accessible. Please do the right thing in supporting this crucial legislation.

o, I recently injured myself.

I would love to say it was a great story, that I was engaged in some amazing feat of athletic prowess and simply pushed my body beyond the limits of what the human body is supposed to do.

But, no. I was HITTING taking a step HOME backwards.

Sure, I was playing basketball at the time, but all I was doing, at the moment of truth, was turning around to catch the inbounds pass. After giving up a basket to my guy. Injury to Michael Alcorn insult.

That’s when I felt something in the bottom of my foot go “pop,” and that’s that. Ruptured plantar fascia. Crutch for four weeks. No normal activities for six weeks.

There are many bad parts of this, not the least of which is this is a quintessentially “old guy”

kind of injury. This is not the sort of thing that happens to 30 year olds. High ankle sprains, pulled hamstrings, torn Achilles … these things happen to young athletes.

Ruptured plantar fascia, that’s an old guy thing.

But I have to say the worst part is that something so small and, to be honest, inconsequential to me for the first 50 years of my life has completely disrupted my world.

I really had no idea how inconvenient this could be. To not be able to trust your feet is a troubling thing for a guy who likes to take the stairs two or three at a time, and who (on account of always running late) tends to hop over things and move at a half jog most of my life. Not to mention how hard it is to operate with only one hand.

As I go from school to school for my job, I carry a backpack and at least one musical instrument, and, as I’m exiting my car, I usually throw things over my shoulder while walking away from the car after kicking the car door shut,

Venezuela, let alone the suffering of the Russian people? How can a socialist walk into a grocery store and think “Gee, I sure hate capitalism”?

Is there been a deficit in our educational system that fails to teach the reasons for the success of the United States? We did not become one of the richest and freest nations on earth due to socialism. Why would we want to take steps backward? Why does the left seem to have such disrespect for law and order? The left leaning cities that are developing vagrancy and sanitation problems and failing to prosecute misdemeanor offences (including shoplifting) are slowly becoming uninhabitable for average citizens.

Isn’t it time to take a look at our children’s school curriculum, to take a closer look at those running for office who want to take the same liberal stand as those legislators in San Francisco and other deteriorating cities, and to more closely evaluate current legislation which would lead us down this path? This is not the time to give up our rights, it is the time to protect them.

Help for the homeless The NO votes against Proposition CC were about 15% of Colorado registered voters, but they won and kept TABOR money from paying for needed projects.

Money was to go for public schools and higher education, which has been reduced. Colorado real estate property taxes are the fourth lowest in the US, while Colorado is the fifth richest state in per-capita income. Colorado ranks 23rd on overall education indicators and well below the national average on K-12 teachers pay. Money is needed to repair the transportation infrastructure and increase capacity.

Only 11 states have lower gas taxes and Colorado ranks 35th in state and local income tax rates.

The NO votes against Jeffco Proposition 1A were 24.3% of registered voters and they blocked money for more jail beds (Jeffco has had to release inmates early because of budget cuts) and for needed improvements to the transportation infrastructure.

When the ban on tent camps in Denver is lifted, money will be needed to provide more shelters for the homeless. The winning minority and the apathetic majority of voters are starving the state, county and city of funds that are desperately needed to maintain quality of life in our state.

I think that’s why I have the limited view of government that I do. I don’t want the government to do all that much. But, dang it, do the things you do really well, please.

We count on the government to keep food and water safe. Ask the people of Flint, Michigan what happens when you can’t trust what comes out of your faucet. We count on the government to keep the roads safe and functional. And, as I’ve written about once or twice this year already (and am likely to want to write about more after this week’s storm), when those aren’t working right, it really throws us off. We want the government to keep the lights on, the keep the commu-

When those pieces of the puzzle aren’t working, none of the rest of the civilization holds together. And, for me, I prefer a government that focuses on keeping those things working. Save your crusades against plastic straws and campaigns to provide free needles to illegal drug users for that day and time when everything else is ship shape. I want government to focus on being able to walk from one place to another with minimal assistance before it worries about the color of accessories it puts on civilization.

The simple things have to work. If we can’t manage that, if we spend our time getting caught up in trivialities, well, maybe that explains why our society is almost all as grumpy as I am these days.

W

hen local comedian Michael Jeffries stepped up to the mic at Max Taps Brewery in Highlands Ranch, the room was filled with a variety of suburbanites.

Folks just getting off work, couples young and old, friend groups and beer lovers filed into the seats in the back room of the brewery on Jan. 25. Minutes before, the room was occupied by a crowd from a funeral reception.

Jeffries, 29, who produces and hosts the show, opened with a joke apologizing for his appearance.

“I made the mistake of sleeping on my hair last night,” he said. “I know I should start sleeping on a mattress instead, but mattresses are expensive and the hair is free if you don’t ask any stupid (expletive) questions.”

When Jeffries first started the suburban showcase, he was asked to only book comics who will remain clean and non-political. The crowds in the suburbs tend to skew older and more conservative, after all.

“Just because you live in the suburbs doesn’t mean you don’t like to laugh,” Jeffries said. “Even if the joke is dirty … or even against your political beliefs.”

Jeffries is just one of the Denverbased comedians capitalizing on the fact that while everyone enjoys laugh-

ing, not everyone wants to sit in an hour of traffic to do it.

This year’s Denver Jewish Film Festival presented by Sturm Family Foundation runs at the Elaine Wolf Theatre at the JCC, 350 S. Dahlia St. in Denver, runs from Wednesday, Feb. 5 through Wednesday, Feb. 19.

The festival features 43 films, both feature-length and short, with numerous regional premieres.

“We have two different volunteer committees that work on deciding which films should be shown. Our selection committee of 11 people watched more than 500 minutes of film every two weeks from May through October to narrow down all the submissions,” Weiner Weiss said. “The films we have this year are some of the strongest we’ve ever had in the festival.”

This year’s lineup includes films from 12 countries and tell a huge swath of stories. There are biographical films on well-known figures like “Joseph Pulitzer: Voice of the People” and “King Bibi,” a World War II spy story (“The Spy Behind Home Plate”), satires of current events (“Tel Aviv on Fire”) and “Sustainable Nation,” which examines efforts to bring water solutions to areas facing drought.

A pair of personal recommendations are “The Keeper” and “Standing Up, Falling Down.”

growth and the outskirts are seeing a slower uptick.

For starters, the suburbs are much more spread out, meaning ride-sharing services can get expensive quickly, said Wende Curtis, owner of Comedy Works, which has locations in downtown Denver and Greenwood Village.

Curtis opened up Comedy Works’ suburban club in 2008 after market research showed that’s where the bulk of people are moving, she said.

“It’s 13 1/2 miles from the original location downtown … but it’s a world away,” she said.

Even if suburban crowds still like to laugh at the not-so-clean jokes, producers still tend to book people who lean away from dirtier humor in their sets.

“My philosophy is on a Saturday night if I’ve got tickets available and people can walk in and buy a ticket, I want to appeal to (our audience),” Curtis said. “Chances are you might get somebody a little edgier walking in downtown and you’re going to get somebody a little cleaner if you go south.”

“The Keeper” is a true story about Bert Trautmann, legendary goalkeeper for Manchester City. The film is a powerful account of redemption after World War II, as well as a love story that reminds viewers of how much is possible if one has love in their life.

And “Standing Up, Falling Down,” is a hilarious and nuanced buddy dramedy starring Billy Crystal and Ben Schwartz.

As is often the case with film festivals, one of the real treats is attending the various filmmaker and expert discussions and events following screenings. In the city center, there’s a higher density of this group. A few miles from downtown, the crowds tend to skew a little older, more conservative and less diverse, Flores said.

That’s why the suburbs tend to be a place where local comics can really put their jokes to the test said Korey David, a local comedian and producer.

“The suburban rooms are where you find out what your material actually primary goal of the festival.

“You don’t have to be Jewish to attend. The festival is such a great opportunity for us to open our doors and arms to each other, and support each other,” Weiner Weiss said. “The films speak to all difference experiences, and all attendees will be able to enjoy and share in our common humanity.”

is,” David said. “It’s easy to pander to audiences in the urban area because everyone agrees with you.”

David, who hosts a traveling show called “Rotating Taps” at breweries in places like Centennial, Lakewood and Parker, has realized you often have to start safe at the suburban shows, he said. That’s because many people in these areas have never seen a show like this.

“You’re just dealing with different types of people who are going to find different types of comedy funny,” he said. “Once you start getting repeat customers, then you can take more risks.”

David also hosts a regular show in Arvada called Hootenanny, which combines live music and comedy.

“A lot of times people think it will be rough (in the suburbs) but it’s actually quite the opposite,” he said.

In Parker, stand-up comedian Rion Evans and improv comedian Grant Garrison are also both working to distinguish the small town as a strong place for comedy.

“I want to turn Parker into the city that’s known for having the best comedy scene in Colorado,” Garrison said. “I don’t want to commute for my comedy.”

Build it and they will come While the audiences tend to be extra appreciative of these live shows close to home, they can also be pickier.

“When you’re older, you’re more selective,” Curtis said. “You just want to see who you want to see.”

Another reason the community hasn’t taken off more is because of a lack of open mics for people to try out comedy for the first time, said Harrison Garcia, another local comic working the suburban crowds.

“I wouldn’t say that any places in (suburban Denver) have their own distinct scene,” he said, “Most of the time a comedy scene needs a few venues that are willing to regularly host not only shows but open mics allowing new comics to try things out.”

As Denver and its comedy scene continue to grow, spaces like the ones Garcia described will continue to pop up, Curtis said. But will the same happen in the suburbs?

“I think the more urban (shows) are going to have a better success rate than the suburban ones, but you know, eventually something’s going to stick,” Curtis said. “Build it and they will come and if it’s strong enough … they’re going to come back.”

The Beach Boys, led by Mike Love, will perform in Denver this summer, at the Levitt Pavilion in Ruby Hill Park.

Tickets are on sale now for the Aug. 6 show, which begins at 7:30 p.m.

Golden boys basketball remains atop 4A Jeffco

GOLDEN — Alan Acevedo is making his mark on the hardwood during his freshman campaign at Golden High School.

Jan. 29 was another example of how key the freshman has been for the Demons — No. 7 in the CHSAANow.com Class 4A boys basketball rankings.

Acevedo came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points and grab seven rebounds in Golden’s 58-53 home victory over D’Evelyn.

“I just want help the team,” Acevedo said. “I don’t really care about points. I care about the family and team.”

The victory kept Golden (12-6, 6-1) atop the 4A Jeffco League standings. Rival Wheat Ridge (9-7, 5-2) and Green Mountain (13-4, 5-2) are one game back. D’Evelyn (7-11, 3-4) is still within striking distance, but Jaguars’ coach Dan Zinn knows getting better and preparing for the playoffs is a primary focus.

“We are still going to battle every game and see where the chips fall,” Zinn said of the league title. “But at the same time we know there is a state tournament that we will be apart of and we want to get ready for that as well.”

D’Evelyn held a 29-28 halftime lead on the road against Golden, but the Demons turned the tide in the third quarter. After 15 points in the first half, Acevedo stayed hot. The freshman’s 3-pointer with 2:30 left in the third quarter gave Golden the lead for good at 38-37.

A 14–3 run extend the lead to double-digits midway through the fourth quarter.

“Second half we talked about just keeping our guy in front of us and play some good half-court man defense,” Golden coach Lou Vullo said.

Senior Ben McLaughlin hit a big 3-pointer during the Demons’ run in the fourth quarter. Fellow senior Jack Anderson had a field goal and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to reach 10 points on the night.

“We feel like we are deep,” Vullo

said of his team that had eight players score on the night. “If someone isn’t producing one night someone else will step in and help us out. We are fortunate to have that.”

D’Evelyn senior Sandy Dinegar (11 points) and junior Kase Sundarapura (10 points) were he lone Jaguars to reach double-digit points in the loss.

“Our defensively intensity was there all night,” Zinn said. “Our energy was there, but when you can’t make baskets it is tough to win bas-

ketball games.”

Jan. 29 night marked the midwaypoint through 4A Jeffco League play.

All seven teams in the competitive conference have played six of the dozen league games on the schedule.

Going into last week’s action, only Standley Lake was outside the top-48 in RPI that qualify for the state tournament.

“This league is tough,” Vullo said.

“At the end of the day there could be five of us who go to the state tournament.”

Green Mountain sinks game-winner in OT to defeat Wheat Ridge

LAKEWOOD — Green Mountain senior Matt Schlieper admitted he didn’t expect to take and make the game-winning shot Jan. 31.

“I really wasn’t expecting the ball,” Schlieper said moments after celebrating a 62-60 overtime against Wheat Ridge with Green Mountain students that stormed the court after the game-winning shot at the buzzer. “When I got it I saw the hoop and did what I naturally do. We work on that shot 1,000 times a day during practice. It was just another shot for me.”

The shot not only pushed the Rams’ winning streak to five games, but kept Green Mountain (13-4, 5-2 in Class 4A Jeffco) in the hunt for a conference title.

Golden (12-6, 6-1) now has a one-game lead over Wheat Ridge (9-7, 5-2) and Green Moun-

tain in the race for the league title.

“We did a good job of making somebody else beat us,” Wheat Ridge coach Tommy Dowd said after the loss. “It was a good game.

I think it was a fun game for people to watch to the end. Maybe the two best teams in the league if you get down to the nitty gritty.”

It was a back-and-forth game at Green Mountain High School with the Rams grabbing a 17-10 lead early in the second quarter thanks to a 12-0 run. The Farmers answered with a 11-0 run to take a 26-20 lead.

Wheat Ridge senior Alex Morales poured in a game-high 24 points. This final bucket of the night came with 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter and gave the Farmers a 54-53 lead.

“He (Morales) can take over the game for sure. He knows how to get his,” Dowd said.

“We had some great efforts tonight.

Bronk finished with 18 points, but a missed free throw with 11 seconds and the game tied at 55-55. The senior did redeem himself with a 3-point play the hard way to open up the scoring in overtime.

However, a clutch 3-pointer by Schell with 2:43 left in overtime gave Green Mountain a 60-58 lead.

“He (Schell) is coming into his own,” Green Mountain coach Mike Puccio said. “There is a lot of great players in this league. I think he is trying to prove he is in that conversation.”

Wheat Ridge junior Wes Miller made a pair of free throws with 1:38 left in overtime to tie it up a 60-60.

Green Mountain held possession of the ball for more than a minute and half leading up to Schell zipping a pass to Schlieper for the shot inside the paint to win it.

“Wheat Ridge is tough. Tommy (Dowd) is one of the best,” Puccio said. “Honestly, I thought we got outtoughed to be honest. We are fortunate. I think some shots dropped late.

Somehow we survived.”

Green Mountain returns to action with a home game against D’Evelyn (7-11, 3-4) on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The Rams will try to avenge an overtime loss the first go-around against the Jaguars.

“This was a nice recovery from the first time around,” Puccio said of Wheat Ridge defeating the Rams by 21 points in both team’s league opener back on Jan. 8. “We need to keep moving forward.”

The Farmers return to conference play at home against Littleton on Saturday, Feb. 8.

“This game will play dividends down the road,” Dowd said. “You get a loss right now, but you get a win later because we’ve been through this.”
