More than 150 STEM School Highlands Ranch students took the final step in their high school

careers on May 20. As students accepted their high school diplomas, students and guest speakers talked about perseverance and how life can continually take unexpected turns.

The ceremony at EchoPark Stadium in Parker featured two guest speakers, Dr. Janine Davidson, president of Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Dr. Carletta Stewart, founder and president of Lady Trailblazers Inc.

Plane emergencies have varied causes, airport says Busy Centennial Airport has had scattering of reported events in recent years

When two planes collided in midair over the Cherry Creek State Park area near a neighborhood just north of Centennial, one plane deployed a parachute and came down in an open field.

The second plane continued to fly, making it safely to Centennial Airport. Both planes came to earth with no injuries.

It wasn’t clear from public safety agencies how close to the nearby residential area the collision or the first plane’s landing occurred.

Initial information indicated the planes collided May 12 over state park property near where Belleview Avenue meets Peoria Street in unincorporated Arapahoe County, according to tweets from South Metro Fire Rescue. The fire agency did not immediately respond for comment May 21 about how close to the neighborhood the first plane landed.

busiest general aviation airports in the nation, sees roughly 340,000 takeoffs and landings each year, on average — or about 930 takeoffs and landings per day, according to the airport.

“General aviation” means the airport features flight training and medical evacuation, corporate charter, small cargo, and recreational flights, among other uses.

But commercial airline flights, like those on United or Southwest airlines, for example, are not part of the mix.

The airport is not located in the City of Centennial, which was formed long after the airport, in 2001. The airport sits at 7800 S. Peoria St., just south of Arapahoe Road.

In recent years, Centennial Airport had 15 on-airport “incidents” — which are less serious and can involve minor damage to aircraft and minor or no injuries — and six on-airport “accidents,” which are more serious and can involve substantial damage to the aircraft and serious injuries, according to FAA and National Transportation Safety Board records, Grigsby Smith said.

That data ran from January 2017 through May 1 of this year, she said.

The May 12 incident is the only midair collision Centennial Airport has had in that time, Grigsby Smith said.

The airport has seen a handful of emergencies that involved crashes or landings in the broader area around the airport in those years, according to Grigsby Smith. Some of those cases: • May 11, 2018 — A Cirrus SR-22, departing Centennial Airport to the south, went down in an open field near Lone Tree. The aircraft’s engine traveled from the impact area and was found lodged in the side of a house. The only person on board was the pilot, who died as a result of the crash. No other injuries were reported.

• Feb. 18, 2017 — A Piper Arrow, departing Centennial Airport to the south, clipped a tree on takeoff and landed in a parking lot south of the airport at Peoria Street and Belford Avenue. Of the two persons on board, one sustained serious injury and the other minor injury.

No damage to any structures was reported.

• Oct. 26, 2018 — A small plane made a “hard landing” in an open field in Lone Tree. Neither of the two people on board nor anyone on the ground was injured, according to South Metro Fire Rescue. The plane left Centennial Airport and shortly after went down in a field south of Lincoln Avenue and east of Havana Street.

FAA staffs air traffic control The responsibility of guiding planes near Centennial Airport falls to the FAA, according to the airport.

“Centennial Airport is the only general aviation airport in the state that has 24/7 FAA-staffed air traffic control,” Grigsby Smith said. She added: “We have some of the best air traffic controllers in the region, and they are an important part of

Causes can vary for “emergency landings,” Grigsby Smith said, using a term that doesn’t necessarily mean a crash.

“For example, a pilot might make an emergency landing at an airport because a passenger may have become ill during the flight or needs emergency medical attention,” Grigsby Smith said.

One of the most important safety elements in terms of avoiding crashes is “the skill and training of the pilot,” Grigsby Smith added.

“The pilot plays the most important role in safety and control of the aircraft.”

Airport can’t control development Residential and commercial developments abound near Centennial Airport and the paths leading to or from it, but the airport has no authority to regulate land it does not own, Grigsby Smith said. The airport opened in May 1968.

“Over the years, Centennial Airport has taken a very active role to connect with and educate surrounding jurisdictions on land use,” Grigsby Smith said. “We strive to inform the public and surrounding jurisdictions regarding the airport’s proximity, activity and potential for any compatibility problems before development begins.”

Centennial Airport is a referral agency for both Arapahoe and Douglas counties, and surrounding jurisdictions, meaning that any proposed developments within the “airport influence area” must be referred to the airport for comment. The influence area is roughly bounded by Belleview Avenue, Yosemite Street, Parker Road and a line south of Lincoln Avenue on the south end.

Many neighborhoods and homeowners’ associations around the airport have “avigation” agreements where the homeowner acknowledges in writing that the property is near the airport and within the airport influence area, Grigsby Smith said.

“While the airport may make recommendations to local jurisdictions regarding proposed developments, the decision to approve development near the airport rests with the approving jurisdiction,” Grigsby Smith said.

5 things to know: 2020 saw spike in deaths from Alzheimer’s, dementia Some racial minorities unlikely to seek care for memory problems, national survey says

Here’s a look at the findings in the 2021 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report put out by the Alzheimer’s Association, a nonprofit health organization that works to accelerate progress in the prevention and cure of Alzheimer’s.

The broad disruption to Americans’ lifestyles that the coronavirus caused likely led to an increase in deaths among people with Alzheimer’s disease — and that loss of life was not directly due to COVID-19 but, rather, to associated factors such as social isolation, according to an annual report about Alzheimer’s disease.

And although Black Americans are twice as likely as their white counterparts to develop Alzheimer’s — and Hispanic Americans are 50% more likely than white Americans — certain people of color have the most concerns about receiving medical care for dementia, according to the report, which included a special section on race, ethnicity and Alzheimer’s this year.

“Despite ongoing efforts to address health and health care disparities in Alzheimer’s and dementia care, survey results show there is still a lot of work to be done,” Carl Hill, the Alzheimer’s Association’s chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer, said in a news release.

Colorado saw 850 more deaths from Alzheimer’s and dementia in 2020 compared to averages over the past five years, according to the

Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia, but there are many kinds, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

There were at least 42,000 more deaths from Alzheimer’s and other dementias across the United States in 2020 compared with averages over the previous five years, according to the report. These were not deaths attributed to COVID-19 but to associated factors.

The Alzheimer’s death total for 2020 was 16% higher than anticipated, said Jim Herlihy, a spokesman for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Colorado chapter.

Based on the prior five years, Colorado’s Alzheimer’s deaths in 2020 exceeded projections by about 23%, Herlihy said.

While there may not be a precise way to determine how much different coronavirus-related lifestyle changes affected deaths, researchers

The Alzheimer’s Association’s 2021 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report provides an indepth look at national statistics about Alzheimer’s disease. New statistics for Colorado included the following:

“Beyond the health implications of the coronavirus itself, people living with Alzheimer’s are at greater risk because of the disruption in their routines, the social isolation from family and friends, the requirement to wear masks and wash hands, and so much more,” Amelia Schafer, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado, said in the news release.

“These increased deaths are a clear sign that the disruption in lifestyle and related confusion are shortening the lives of many of our older adults living with dementia,” Schafer continued.

People of color distrust health care, survey says Fewer than half of Black and Native Americans feel confident they have access to health care providers who understand their ethnic or racial background and experiences, and only about three in five Asian Americans and Hispanics likewise feel confident, according to the news release.

Nearly two-thirds of Black Americans surveyed believe that medical research is biased against people of color — a view shared by substantial numbers of Asian Americans (45%), Native Americans (40%) and Hispanic Americans (36%). Only half of Black Americans trust that a future cure for Alzheimer’s will be shared equally regardless of race, color or ethnicity.

Skepticism about memory care abounds More than half of non-white Americans believe significant loss of memory or cognitive abilities is “a normal part of aging,” the news release said.

Hispanic, Black and Native Americans are twice as likely as

white Americans to say they would not see a doctor if experiencing thinking or memory problems.

What can be done?

If people tell their doctor about thinking or memory issues, the physician can look at different factors besides Alzheimer’s that may be contributing to the situation, Herlihy said.

There are reversible causes of memory loss “that include certain medications, minor head trauma or injury, emotional disorders, vitamin B-12 deficiency and alcoholism,” Herlihy said.

Diagnosis clears an easier path forward Perhaps the most important step people can take is getting a diagnosis, Herlihy said.

“About half of all Alzheimer’s cases are never diagnosed,” Herlihy said. “That means that loved ones may never fully understand what is happening to the individual, and the symptoms can be mistaken or misinterpreted for personality changes or other things.”

By understanding the disease, family and friends can learn about medications that can help with symptoms, how to practice healthy lifestyles that may help extend a person’s cognitive health, and how to prepare for the future in terms of legal or financial aspects — as well as ensuring the safety of all involved, Herlihy said.

They can also take advantage of resources offered by the Alzheimer’s Association at no charge that include disease information and classes on topics such as communication techniques, legal and financial planning, and care at various stages of the disease, Herlihy said.

Renovated Marjorie Park to open near Fiddler’s Green Free, family-friendly event will be held June 12

Saturday, June 12 will be the opening date for a renovated Marjorie Park — on the north side of Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre, 6331 S. Fiddlers Green Circle in Greenwood Village, and the beginning of a new story for the small green space.

It is owned by the Museum of Outdoor Arts, which was co-founded in 1981 by Marjorie P. Madden, her husband, developer John W. Madden Jr., and their daughter, Cynthia Madden Leitner, who is MOA’s president. The timing coincides with MOA’s 40th anniversary.

Readers will be familiar with the busy MOA indoor galleries and studio at 1000 Englewood Parkway — with ongoing exhibits and classes in normal times — but may not have made the connection with this sweet spot, and with Fiddler’s Green.

MOA’s mission is “to make art a part of everyday life” and the free, family-friendly event on June 12 will run from noon to 4 p.m., with artwork walking tours, stadium grass seating, a lion’s den sculpture walk, a delightful life-sized bronze series of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Harry Marinsky and other permanent artworks.

These large “Alice” sculptures are inspired by John Tenniel’s original illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s classic and include a charming Mad Hatter’s Tea Party — a particular favorite with this art lover.

Drinks and food will be available for purchase from Simply Pizza Food Truck and Em’s Ice Cream.

A new feature will be a labyrinthlike hardscape, designed after the seven petal vesica, in the center of the 2.1 acre park, which contains more than 40 art installations, including a lion’s den sculpture walk and a kinetic sculpture. (A vesica is a pointed oval shape.)

MOA will operate Marjorie Park with a variety of programs, including a summer concert series; a “Lunch and Learn” series, focused on artwork demonstrations and lectures; UnWine Wednesdays, a weekly fitness series; ongoing yoga classes and more.

Included: Lunch and Learn, with local sculptor Reven Swanson on June 14; YogaRita on June 15 and 29; a family-friendly concert series kickoff event with Stone Beat Invasion, featuring music by the Beatles and Rolling Stones on June 17; and live music by the String Bean Duo on June 23.

Fleet division receives national recognition STAFF REPORT

For its accountability, collaboration, creativity and celebration of successes, the Castle Rock Public Works fleet division has been named one of the 100 Best Fleets in North America.

The fleet division is a team of eight employees who manage the town’s fleet of more than 450 vehicles. Public safety vehicles for Castle Rock Police and Castle Rock Fire and Rescue make up 128 of those vehicles.

“Town departments rely on these vehicles to do their job efficiently,” said Public Works Director Dan

Sailer. “The fleet division understands this and does an excellent job of aligning their resources to give them peace of mind that their vehicles are dependable.

“This award is a result of the team’s commitment to serving and supporting all town departments in an efficient and effective manner.”

Twelve criteria were used to select the best fleets. In addition to the four above criteria, public sector fleets were judged on use of technology and information; evidence of a high-trust culture; performance recognition; “doing it right the first time”; quick/efficient

turnaround; competitive pricing; staff development; and resources stewardship.

Castle Rock ranked 97th on the list of 100. Other Colorado fleets on the list included Denver, sixth; Fort Collins, 10th; Thornton, 37th; and Poudre Fire Authority, 95th.

Board meetings have remained closed to the general public during the COVID-19 pandemic and are available for people to view on YouTube, either through a livestream during meetings or through recordings posted to the district’s account.

Board President David Ray said the board moved public comment on its agendas so people could hear updates from the superintendent and staff about the district’s plans first.

The goal was to help public commenters be informed on the latest updates to district issues before speaking, he told Colorado Community Media speaking by phone.

“What we were finding with public comment is that the comments were really based on opera-

tional decisions, decisions that the superintendent has the authority to make,” he said.

The board has kept public comment before any action items so directors could hear people’s input before votes, he said.

Ray also believes the switch encouraged more public comment, not less.

Before Jan. 19, Ray said meetings averaged a handful of signups for public comment. Since then, it’s been closer to 20 people, he said, with the highest turnout exceeding 60 people.

The district has also been also forming a plan to resume in-person public comment, Ray said. The district has been under public health orders that required six feet between people, he said, which did

not leave enough capacity in the boardroom for directors, district staff scheduled to present and members of the public, he said.

Ray said after reviewing the new public health and executive orders issued May 14, the board will allow people to choose between making comment in-person or virtually at its May 25 meeting.

“Mass gathering” requirements in the orders are for gatherings of 100 or more people. The boardroom’s capacity is less than 100 people, he added via text message.

“Therefore, our upcoming meeting will return to the previous practice of allowing public to attend in person while maintaining appropriate allowance of audience,” he said, “based on capacity limitations and number of seats.”

Polis signs $34 billion state budget into law Plan sets aside historic reserves

Gov. Jared Polis signed Colorado’s $34.1 billion fiscal year 2021-22 budget into law on May 17, restoring cuts made as the coronavirus crisis descended on the state last year while also saving a historic amount for future economic downturns.

The Joint Budget Committee, the Legislature’s budget-writing panel, had to contend with constantly changing tax-revenue projections that were made uncertain by the pandemic.

“This is the culmination of a yearlong process — and it’s always hard. But this is the hardest it’s ever been because of the changing numbers,” Polis said just before signing Senate Bill 205 at the Capitol.

The budget takes effect in July, when the next fiscal year begins. It sets aside more than $1.5 billion for Colorado’s reserve fund that can be tapped by future Legislatures. It also includes 3% raises for state employees, $480 million to reduce Colorado’s annual K-12 school funding shortfall and a $20 million line item to create hundreds of new around-the-clock care slots for people with developmental disabilities.

Also in the budget is $800 million for a state coronavirus stimulus package, the largest slice of which is being dedicated to infrastructure projects. Bills that are part of the package were still being debated in the Legislature.

our children, an investment in our future.”

State Sen. Dominick Moreno, a Commerce City Democrat who leads the Joint Budget Committee, marveled at the difference a year has made in the state’s budget situation.

His panel went from having to make tearful cuts to having enough money to pay for new programs and initiatives.

“There is so much good in this budget that will help Colorado recover,” Moreno said.

State Rep. Julie McCluskie, a Dillon Democrat who is vice chair of the panel, highlighted spending in the budget around wildfire preparedness and response.

“We are going to make sure that we are ready for this year’s wildfire season,” she said.

State lawmakers had far more money to spend next year than expected because the pandemic’s toll on Colorado’s economy wasn’t as bad as the state’s fiscal analysts feared. The budget represents $3.8 billion more in spending over the current fiscal year. Much of the windfall represents unspent tax revenue, not future revenue.

As the budget was debated in the Legislature, lawmakers made a number of changes to the document first drafted by the Joint Budget Committee. The ones that made it into the final version include: • $1 million more for body camera expenses for local law enforcement agencies, bringing the total to $4 million • $1 million for the School Bullying Prevention and Education Cash Fund

• $250,000 for the Suicide Prevention Program • $1.1 million in general fund dollars for reintroduction of gray wolves • $125,000 to hire a chief educational equity officer in the Colorado Department of Human Services The changes resulted in a smaller amount — 13.41% of the budget instead of 13.5% — being set aside in the reserve fund. The Joint Budget Committee initially wanted $1.75 billion to be put in the savings account, but that number was reduced to about $1.5 billion to balance out the changes requested by other lawmakers.

The budget does not include $3.8 billion in federal coronavirus stimulus money heading to Colorado as part of the American Rescue Plan. That money will be distributed by the

Legislature separately.

Lawmakers and nonpartisan staff are still working to determine the rules around how that money can be used.

Sen. Bob Rankin, one of two Republicans on the budget committee, praised Moreno for how he ran the budget process. But he noted that the panel’s work isn’t done.

“The task ahead of us is almost as hard,” said Rankin, who lives in Carbondale. “We literally have $4 billion (to determine how to spend). So the work is not over.”

Victim’s family sues STEM School, DCSD for wrongful death Court filings allege district, school failed to follow Claire Davis School Safety Act

The parents of Kendrick Castillo have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Douglas County School District and STEM School Highlands Ranch, alleging the district and school failed to provide students with a safe environment, leading to Kendrick’s death.

John and Maria Castillo’s attorney, Dan Caplis, provided a statement from the couple saying they hope the lawsuit will bring more clarity about what led to the shooting.

“Our son Kendrick gave his life to save others. As his parents we will do everything in our power to protect other students from being killed at school,” the statement said.

Kendrick died while helping tackle one of two shooters who opened fire in a British literature class at STEM School on May 7, 2019. Eight more students were injured in the attack.

ing sign went unchecked eight days before the shooting when the school’s Wikipedia page was edited on April 28, 2019. In response to a line about the school’s antisuicide and school shooting prevention programs, a user wrote, “Do they work? We shall see.”

The lawsuit says Erickson and McKinney were allowed to come and go from class and school the morning of the shooting, without having to check in at school entrances, allowing them to carry weapons into school unchecked.

The Castillos were among several victims who last year filed “notice of claims,” or formal notice to a government agency when someone intends to sue for personal injury or wrongful death.

The filings alleged also alleged the school and district missed warning signs that the shooters could become violent and mishandled threats to the school’s safety.

Those claims named the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office as well, although the Castillos’ 2021 lawsuit does not.

The suit blames STEM School for not contracting with DCSO to have a school resource officer on site, “thereby undermining the deterrent effect of having an armed SRO within the school and allowing potential shooters to believe they would be able to execute their initial attack without armed or other formal law enforcement resistance.”

Examining the outlook for economic recovery

he United States economic outlook has “clearly brightened,” according to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. The Washington Post also states that the U.S. FINANCIAL emerges as the main engine for STRATEGIES global economic recovery as jobs spike and stimulus cash is spent, mainly on goods imported from other countries. This should help buoy a global recovery but could also increase our Patricia Kummer trade deficit.

Three rounds of stimulus checks, increased corporate earnings and a bull market well underway are fueling significant economic gains in the U.S. Unemployment is improving, gross domestic product (GDP) is escalating, and many businesses are reopening. There is no doubt some businesses and jobs are gone for good, but the ability to rebound in the midst of a pandemic is something apparently only America can do so far in 2021. China led

the recovery in 2020 as the first to reopen their economy after the pandemic.

The economy as a whole seems to be thriving on unprecedented stimulus, continued low interest rates and widely anticipated increase in real GDP to 6.5 percent this year.¹ Most economists warn this could lead to higher inflation as well.

Investors are enjoying this earnings season, where, so far, a record 87% of S&P 500 companies have beat earnings estimates, and earnings look to be growing by more than 46 percent, according to Refinitiv. There may be a hangover of increased federal deficit, a higher trade deficit and rising costs and interest rates. But, for now, investors are cashing in on equities and pushing off inflation fears until later.

Manufacturing activity, according to the Institute of Supply Management (ISM), hit its fastest pace since 1983 in March, while the U.S. service sector continued to see solid improvement in activity.

The trends in new COVID-19 cases and deaths were moving in a favorable direction, though variants remain a potential unknown

and there were renewed lockdowns in Europe and India. Nevertheless, the global economic trends provided a positive backdrop for stocks.

Opposite of last year, when a few large tech names led the way, so far this year, value-oriented stocks outperformed growth stocks and small caps topped large caps.

Brett Lapierre, senior investment strategist with Mariner Wealth Advisors, states that U.S. equity markets continue to operate in a favorable backdrop amid accelerating economic and earnings growth and an accommodative central bank. Equity markets can generally handle a steady and modest rise in interest rates if this happens for the right reasons such as faster economic growth.

But if rates rise too quickly nervousness can appear. Inflation worries can also hurt equity prices, particularly when valuations are elevated.

Jeff Krumpelman, chief investment strategist for Mariner Wealth Advisors, has pointed out that there remain few signs that markets are in bubble territory.

He wouldn’t be surprised if we see a correction or sideways market

over the next few months, which could prove to be a healthy development.

Looking ahead, Lapierre expects above-average economic growth and higher inflation over the next several months. He sees the acceleration in inflation as temporary, giving the Fed some wiggle room before having to lift short-term interest rates. Risks to this outlook include a period of higher inflation lasting longer, the potential for tax increases to shorten the economic rebound and the potential for COVID-19’s impact to linger.

Some words are great, and others just grate

“S

o,” “listen,” “to be honest,” “at the end of the day,” “it is what it is,” “like,” “literally,”

“right?”

An April column QUIET invited readers to nominate words DESPERATION and phrases that should be banned for overuse, misuse, or uselessness.

The response was far greater than I anticipated.

Why we are often careless when communicating is a Craig Marshall topic for another Smith column. Someone I know says “At any rate” without knowing she’s saying it.

The usual suspects - including “usual suspects” - were nominated.

The one syllable word that has topped every one of these annual lists made it there again.

An expletive the writer admitted is here to stay was nominated for the first time. Take a guess.

Many of this year’s words were pandemic-related and should go away once the coast is clear.

“Social distancing,” “unprecedented, “new normal,” and “we’re all in this together.”

“Have a nice day,” the young woman repeats with the sincerity of a torpid parrot to every customer, never once something else more interesting or thoughtful she could say.

A variant, submitted by Lindi Brubaker (Highlands Ranch), is even more unwelcome.

“Have a nice rest of the day.”

Don’t begin a comment with “To be honest,” wrote Bob Marttila (Highlands Ranch) who added, “The person who uses `To be honest’ may not have been honest in the past and may not be in the future.”

“No worries.” “No problem.” “My bad.” “This too shall pass.”

“Kiddos.” “You guys.” “Dude.”

“Icon” and “iconic.” “Robust.”

Some readers didn’t explain themselves; others went into great detail.

Mike Dabney (Highlands Ranch): “Stakeholder.” Sharene Schmalz (Cincinnati, Ohio): “Frankly.” R. Johnson (Englewood): “Arguably.”

On the other hand, Tom Kocialski (Centennial) submitted a disserta-

tion, edited here, on “systemic.”

“It may be just me, but I prefer to use the word `systemic’ in a biological sense as associated with a system within the human body, or a root system of a plant. I would prefer to use the word `systematic’ to relate to processes that are implemented by a system.”

Terry Gong (Arvada): “How was your weekend?” coming from an employee who asks inappropriate personal questions.

Kalvin Huck (Arvada): “Having said that” and “That being said.”

The all-time loser lost again.

“Like.”

A Castle Rock reader who wants to remain anonymous stated, “It’s an indication that the speaker is lazy-minded and is resorting to empty equivocations. It undermines whatever they are trying to say. I stop listening.”

I like it like that.

Pat Olson (Centennial) wrote, “Last week I was at the dog park and listened to a lady say `like’ every 10 words.”

Douglas Wolf (Wellington, Florida; yes, Florida) agrees with Olson.

“Increasingly, its use has permeated the conversation of those who

are old enough to know better.”

Elizabeth No Last Name (Golden) submitted, “To make a long story short,” and added, “My husband uses it many times a day. Just tell your information, please. It doesn’t make you look smarter or more knowledgeable to begin with that annoying phrase.”

(Good luck at home, Elizabeth, after your husband reads this.)

P. Hudson (Centennial), proposed a word I’m unable to mention, except in its sanitized form.

“I think screenwriters must be paid by the ‘f-word.’ None of my friends is as profane as the characters in contemporary movies.”

He added, “If Martin Scorsese remade ‘On the Waterfront’ it would burn your ears off.”

(Note: it’s spoken 506 times in Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street.”)

Martin Culpepper (location unknown), being impertinent, nominated “every word in your article.”

“Go figure.”

Bigger, better, faster, higher, smarter

ociety thrives on one-upmanship. In everything we do, whether we realize it or not, we set a bar. And as we set the bar, more WINNING often than not, we try and improve WORDS upon whatever it is we are doing.

Sometimes this just happens and we become accidental goal setters.

However, there are certain things and times in our life when we become Michael Norton intentional about setting the bar and even raising the bar.

Whatever it is we did, we know that with some extra effort we can do it bigger, better, faster, higher, or farther. If we are a hardwired competitor, we look at what others around us are doing and immediately think the same thing, don’t we? If they can do it, then I am sure I can crush it. Does this happen because we are fascinated with winning or because we are

compelled by competition?

Game on. The race is on. The heat is on. Bring it on. These are the things we say or the voice that we hear in our head when we are faced with a challenge, even if the challenge is self-imposed. Conceivably there is no competition because the other person, team, or company has no idea that we have become determined, and have set out to not only raise the bar but raise it so high that no one will ever catch us.

Sometimes this is exactly what we need to break out of a slump or reignite our passion. We need something to chase. We need a goal, a quota, or a target that forces us out of our comfort zone and into our “Go Zone” so we can go bigger, better, faster, higher, farther in whatever it is we are pursuing.

Then again, sometimes it’s OK to let others go ahead, and go as far and as fast as they please. Last week I was driving on the highway and staying in the flow of traffic when I looked in the rearview mirror to see another car bobbing and

weaving through traffic. He flew by me doing at least 15-20 miles per hour faster than the rest of us.

However, competition does seem to get the better of us sometimes, and suddenly, a few other cars picked up the pace, trying to match the speed of the lead car.

There was a time in my life where I would have felt that same pull and let my pride get the better of me. Thankfully, the wisdom of maturity has conquered my foolish pride and I sat back and let them all pass. As we rounded the next bend, there were a few state troopers waving the drivers over to the side of the road. There was no moment spent gloating over their demise as I have had my share of speeding tickets in this life. In this case it was better to let others go faster.

Continuing my drive, it gave me time to reflect on the bigger, better, faster, higher, and farther concept. I thought about the many times that I had said, “I can do that better than they can. I can go bigger than that.” And once again it humbled me because over the

years, I have learned that there is always someone or something bigger, better, smarter, and faster than me. Rushing into competing is the equivalent of taking a “Fire, Aim, Ready” approach. On one hand it is great to be motivated to pursue a goal or target. On the other hand, sometimes prudence really is the better part of valor.

Friendly Colorado? We’ve got to stop harming each other

N

ot sure if everyone has noticed, but our Colorado community is suffering right now. I don’t mean from the onceGUEST again increasing casualties of COLUMN COVID-19 or the not-quick-enough economic recovery.

I’m not talking about the students, parents, or teachers struggling to keep it together till school ends this year. Those Linda Newell are too obvious.

Instead, I’m highlighting that even as those current issues start to resolve, there’s another hidden issue that is holding our community back from the pursuit of happiness that allegedly we’re all supposed to have in this country.

It’s empathic awareness; an ability to act and respond with dignity with our fellow humans.

Historically and recently in our state, we have seen Colora-

dans harming others, sometimes, completely unaware that they are.

This does not include clear acts of hatred or violence like abuse, murder, or rape (which we’ve had our share of, unfortunately). This lack of sensitivity or empathy is more insidious and silent in the ways that it shows up.

In Colorado, this state legislative session is an unfortunate example of legislators making hateful comments about their colleagues on the floor, at the mic being recorded in full public view.

However, some people watching, and even the speakers themselves occasionally, are clueless about the harm they create. Sadly, there have been “jokes” about lynchings, a discussion of the threefifths of a person, and the mention of the term “sissy” all within this 2021 session in the House.

Recently, our own local state Rep. David Ortiz was the subject of a clueless colleague’s derogatory comment. Our public servants are supposed to be leaders not only in policy but also in camaraderie

and civility. They are people we elect to show us the way in how to bring neighbors together and build community.

On top of all this at the state level, we recently witnessed one of our members of Congress from Colorado vote against a federal hate crimes bill intended to counter the rise of anti-Asian violence during the pandemic.

State Rep. Lauren Boebert was the only member of the Colorado delegation to vote against it. Does she not understand the harm she is causing fellow Coloradans with that vote? We have a torrid history of Asian oppression with internment camps right in our own state. This is a deep wound that she cut and re-opened again for our Asian Coloradans.

For those of us who are not in office, we also need to be more aware and empathic when we post on social media or interact with our neighbors in the community.

I’m truly not sure we can do much about people who are blatantly bigoted. But if you claim you are

“not racist,” then please watch your words and actions with your neighbors. It is often said Colorado is a friendly state. We need to remember that no matter possible “good intent” of our words and actions, the impact can never be taken back. What might seem small to one person, might be deeply traumatizing to another.

We can do better, Colorado. Let’s prove that to be true by not causing harm to each other (whether it’s intentional or not).

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR End loopholes for ultra-rich No matter what we look like, where we come from, or how we make a living, most of us do our best to care for our families and communities. But today a handful of corporations undermine all of us by taking advantage of tax loopholes and refusing to contribute what they owe. These corporations and the ultra-rich continue to hoard their wealth while many working people are underpaid, and small businesses struggle to recover from the pandemic.

It’s important to center policies around the families, working people, and small business owners who are the backbone of our healthy, thriving communities.

Colorado legislators are currently considering a package of legislation designed to make our tax code fairer by closing loopholes that benefit only a small number of wealthy people and big corporations. HB21-1311 and HB21-1312 will expand the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), fund a statewide Child Tax Credit (CTC), support small businesses, and ensure the ultra-wealthy contribute what they owe.

When we go all in for all of us, we can make Colorado a place we’re proud to call home with world-class community services, thriving families, and flourishing small businesses. Let’s choose Coloradans over corporations: contact your legislators and tell them to support HB21-1311 and HB21-1312.

Scenario was scare mongering This is in response to the author of the “Super Dad” letter.

Please stay in your basement with a mask, goggles, face shield, binky and blanket. No one, you or the government, should tell us how to live our lives. There is something called the Constitution that provides for liberty and freedom.

Face masks are not the cureall. One of the largest studies on the efficacy of face masks, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, provided the following results. A study of 4,800 subjects (2,400 with masks and 2,400 without masks) found only .3% higher infection rate by unmasked versus masked.

Blue masks available at grocery stores are often sterilized with ethylene oxide, which is a known carcinogen. Breathing is inhibited, and inhaling particles, which comes from mask wearing can put you at risk for lung diseases including pulmonary fibrosis. All of this information was included in an article written by Conan Milner.

Keep wearing your mask, it is especially effective when driving alone. Oh, I bet you don’t drive.

Automobile accidents account for 1.25 million fatalities per year, so I’m sure you avoid that too.

Freedom and liberty, rather than playing the role of a sheep to the government is very important. We all die of something. Enjoy life.

That letter, in my opinion, was a childish bunch of scare mongering.

ith many Denver metro counties moving to “level clear” and Colorado ending its statewide mask mandate, the era of coronavirus restrictions seems to be coming to a close. Nevertheless, local public health officials urged caution when asked how to properly practice trail etiquette in a summer that will still feature the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Outdoor mask mandates have seen rollbacks for months, with Jefferson County Public Health and Tri-County Public Health — which covers Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties — lifting their outdoor mask mandates on April 5 and Boulder County following suit on April 9. Nevertheless, many public health officials are urging caution when visiting trails and open spaces in the coming weeks. The pandemic is far from over in Colorado, which on May 18 reported a case rate of 20 per 100,000 people — the highest in the U.S. at the time of the report.

Jefferson County Public Health Public Affairs Manager Ashley Sever said that despite the move to “level clear,” JCPH was still recommending that people wear masks if they’re in large crowds or uncertain of the vaccination status of those around them.

“We’ve moved to level clear,” said Sever. “We still recommend when anybody is around people who don’t have a good vaccination status, if they don’t know, or if they know they’re unvaccinated or in larger crowds, things like that, we certainly want people to continue to take prevention measures.”

Dr. Bernadette Albanese, an epidemiologist with Tri-County Health Department, added that while getting a vaccine is likely the best thing to do to avoid getting sick, there are increased risk factors when in heavily trafficked public spaces that would compel mask wearing.

“Getting a vaccine is probably the number one thing you can do to keep healthy,” said Albanese.

“When you’re outdoors with a lot of people you don’t know — you don’t know their infection status — and you want to put yourself in the best position to remain healthy, how about a mask?

“I don’t think it’s hard to do,” Albanese continued. “And it’ll protect you. And also protect others.”

Sever added that some examples of high-risk situations could include being outdoors with people who are being boisterous or have recently vacationed.

“When you’re in a higher-risk scenario,” said Sever, “like with someone who recently vacationed, or if people are yelling or screaming or singing and you’re in closer proximity with those people, that’s another reason to wear a mask outdoors. It’s in those higher-risk scenarios where wearing a mask outdoors is still probably a good idea.”

Enessa Janes, Arvada’s deputy director of the Department of Vibrant Communities and Neighborhoods, said that she recommended people continue wearing masks and practice social distancing in parks and on trails, despite the change to “level clear”. Janes added that in situations where it is impossible to socially distance, using one’s best judgment should suffice.

“For our part we’re really encouraging people to continue to use (masks),” said Janes, “and to follow CDC guidelines and not visit the parks if they’re feeling sick.

“There will probably be situations where you can’t always keep six feet social distancing with passing,” Janes continued. “In those cases, step off the trail if you need to, but please don’t step off so far that you disturb the natural environment or disrupt the habitat. Just be as respectful to other walkers and hikers as possible.”

Janes added that she anticipated continued high usage of open spaces, and thanked the maintenance teams that have been

working to keep public parks clean throughout the pandemic.

“Our trails and parks have gotten so much use over the course of the pandemic,” said Janes,” and can continue to get that use

because of how hard our teams have been working to keep the parks looking clean and ready for increased use. We’re really anticipating the same level of use this summer — if not more.”

Three decades later, Davidson said former President Barack Obama appointed her as undersecretary of the entire U.S. Navy.

In the end, Davidson told students, “Even if you have no idea what you want to do when you leave here, or you think you know, but it does not quite work out — perseverance will carry you through.”

Stewart said the Class of 2021 is the “generation of change.”

“Get out of the mindset of doing the ordinary and get up and do the extraordinary,” she said. “A set back is a set up for the next opportunity.”

Students also took to the podium, as one of the class valedictorians, Jaeden Toy, called for a moment of silence for Kendrick Castillo, a STEM School student who died in 2019.

Toy, a sophomore at the time, said Castillo saved a lot of his friends and classmates in the May 7 shooting.

Co-Valedictorian Kyle Paris said for the STEM School Class of 2021, the high school experience has been anything but traditional. Freshmen year, Paris said the class dealt with the changes of getting into high school and adjusting to a new school. During sophomore year, the class dealt with tragedy with a school shooting. Both junior and senior years were marred with the restrictions caused by a pandemic, including finding new ways to sleep through Zoom classes, he joked.

In in the end, Paris said the non-traditional experience has helped this class prepare for the fact that life is hard and unpredictable.

Equity issues were laid bare. Our hospital had a lot of people of color, with kidney problems or diabetes, and many didn’t even know they had diabetes. During the first wave, our ICU had only a handful of white patients. Everyone else a person of color. The second wave was less discriminate. One of the nurses said COVID was like a predator. First it took out the weakest, then the next-weakest.

There are a lot fewer in our COVID wing now, but there are a lot more in their 30s and 40s. All unvaccinated.

Hospital chaplain in the time of COVID So much unknown I’ve worked as a hospital chaplain for six years. When COVID hit in March 2020, people were just getting sick so fast. We weren’t letting families in, and chaplains became an essential connecting link. My job was facilitating video calls — holding up iPads to unconscious and intubated patients, so their family members could see them, and in hopes that the patients could hear their voices.

The unknown and the separation made it so scary. Normally, loved ones can be with their family members in the hospital, to understand the severity of the illness and what’s happening. With COVID, people just dropped them off at the door of the hospital, and everything after that they heard through others.

Family members would ask doctors, how are you treating this?

What are my loved one’s chances?

And last March, the answer was, we don’t know. There were few standards of care. The drugs were experimental. It was incredibly difficult for the doctors, and there was a lot of anger at the unknowing among families.

to fix it or make it go away, but to bear witness to their pain and support them on their journey.

I’m still trying to sort out the effect it had on me. All the metaphors were about war and battle — “front lines.” “Heroes.” “Battling the unseen enemy.” There was a lot of secondary trauma.

Now that things are calmed down to a degree, things will pop into

my head. One night, about 1 in the morning, a nurse asked me to call a man whose wife had just died of COVID. When I called, he told me he had just lost his son to COVID, and now he had it too. He said, “COVID has taken everyone I love, and I couldn’t even come to the hospital to be with my wife.” It was the most alone I had ever heard anyone feel.

I was his connection to the outside world in that darkness and loneliness. I don’t know if he survived.

Because of our clinical boundaries, I don’t get to call later and see how someone’s doing. It’s hard, but it’s also freeing. I don’t have the option to know, so I put it out to God and the universe.

A predator lurks I partnered with a lot of families who had good outcomes, too. Some people I got to help leave. I got close to their family members. Now we’re allowing family members to come in for an hour a day in a controlled manner.

The first wave hit the most

‘More resilient than I thought I was’ I don’t have a quid pro quo relationship with God. I can see that God is with us in our suffering, but God doesn’t cause it. If your loved one is struggling to breathe, God is with us in that struggle. One thing that struck me: how many people had a view of God as judgmental and punishing. “What did my wife do to deserve this?” Theologically it was hard for me. Unlike a preacher, my job isn’t to teach anyone, but to help them uncover resources they already have.

I learned I’m a lot more resilient than I thought I was, and that it’s OK to not be resilient all the time, and to have a day to fall apart. We have to release it. There’s something about being in health care, that hero mentality — we need to tell ourselves it’s OK to not be the hero.

Everyone should get vaccinated.

Seeing people who haven’t had anyone get really sick from COVID don’t have any idea how heartbreaking and terrible it can be. Even if you recover, you don’t know the extent of damage it will do to your body.

I have loved ones who have chosen not to get vaccinated, and it’s all too easy for me to picture them in that ICU. COVID is also a reminder that we truly never know how many days we have left, and that we never know what’s coming.

Colorado to host nation’s first ‘drone soccer’ tournaments Effort takes off in partnership with Wings Over the Rockies, training camps in Centennial area

The idea of “drone soccer” may be difficult to picture, but the obscure sport appears poised to make an entrance into the public eye.

“What we’re doing is highly educational and teaches career skills, and that’s really valuable, especially for young people who are figuring out what they want to study,” said Kyle Sanders, the vice president for U.S. Drone Soccer, the national representative for the sport.

Drone soccer is an electronic, educational “e-sport” where participants build, program, learn to fly and repair drones, Sanders said. A team sport, participants play using racing drones surrounded by plastic exoskeletons. In a netted arena with a hoop on either end, teams try to prevent opponents from flying into their hoop by blocking their drones and crashing into them, Sanders said.

The Rocky Mountain State Games — an event that Sanders called the largest multisport event in the state — is hosting the first statewide tournament for drone soccer, tentatively set to start July 31 at Coronado High School in Colorado Springs.

The Rocky Mountain games are “like a mini-Olympics,” Sanders said. “That includes for athletes with physical disabilities and other events.”

U.S. Drone Soccer launched in Colorado with the first academic program adopted at Coronado High School, according to the games’ event website.

The upcoming state games will also be the first public tournament in North America for drone soccer, according to Sanders.

On May 1, the Exploration of Flight facility hosted what the Wings nonprofit called the first academic competition in North America for high school students, bringing in students from Coronado and Westminster high schools and the Wings Aerospace Pathways program, according to a news release.

On top of that, beginning June 1, drone soccer training camps will take place at the Exploration of Flight facility for students ages 12 to 17 who want to learn to build and fly drones as they prepare for the Rocky Mountain State Games, according to a news release.

New training sessions are to occur from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Friday on specific weeks in June and

July. Registrants may use Wings’ equipment or purchase discounted equipment, according to the news release.

The intent is for camp participants to play in the state games, said Sanders, who is also a program manager with Wings Over the Rockies.

The drone soccer training camps cost $485 to participate in, but that includes the purchase of the drone equipment, Sanders said. Cost comes to $300 if participants don’t want to keep the equipment. Discounts are available, Sanders added.

Hayes swims hard after pandemic year Arapahoe swimmer is headed to Division I competition at Auburn

Arapahoe senior swimmer Fletcher Hayes still has a positive attitude about this season despite the differences brought on by COVID concerns.

Hayes, who is headed to swim for Auburn University next season, was a participant in the 2018 boys state championships. Then he swam on two relay teams, was third in the 200 IM and the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle in the 2019 state meet.

Swimming was canceled because of COVID in the spring of 2020.

“I do have high hopes for this season, but it is a little different because so far the plan is to have the state meet time finals, and the dual meets so far this year have been weird because they have all been virtual,” said Hayes. “I’m just glad we will have a state meet, to be honest. It’s nice being back together with the team in the pool with the coaches and everything.”

After the disappointment of last spring, Hayes is ready to make noise

this season.

“As a team we were really disappointed about the 2020 season,” said Hayes. “We had high hopes and were really excited about what we thought we could do. Then it got all taken away from us.

“As a sophomore (in 2019) I wasn’t really expecting the results that I got. My freshman year I got like eighth and sixth in both my individual events, and I was kind of expecting something the same or maybe like a fifth or fourth place. I really surprised myself (in 2019).

“It’s been nice so far this season because you can put your head down and train and not worry about anything else because you don’t have to ride a bus to another school and all that. The meets remind me of time trials because I’m racing my own teammates in my own pool, no one else is there, no fans in the stands.

It’s definitely nice to have my teammates there because they help a lot.

I just go with the flow during the meets.”

“Every season has been different,” he said. “I haven’t competed in some of the events yet so we really don’t know. After I swim at all the events I will be able to meet with the coaches and discuss what they think and what I think.”

County sees increase in unregistered vehicles Sheriff’s office says it’s time to renew them STAFF REPORT

After noticing an increase in the numbers of expired license plates, expired temporary tags and vehicles without any license plates on the roads, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is reminding folks to register their cars.

The community reading goal of 8 million minutes read, if met, will

benefit the Douglas Land Conservancy with a $1,000 gift, courtesy of the Douglas County Libraries Foundation, according to the release.

Kids Corners in the libraries are now open, and playscapes will reopen this spring. The Parker location library will debut its brandnew playscape, U-Fix-It Pit Stop, this summer.
