Plans from a different developer were submitted earlier this year for 15-story buildings on those same parcels.

The Sports Castle building was built in the 1920s. In 1971, Garts Brothers Sporting Goods Co. opened in the building. The company merged with Sports Authority in 2003. Sports Authority closed the store in 2016. The space has been used to house events as well as temporary stores such as Spirit Halloween since then.

DEVELOPMENT Denver Botanic Gardens The Denver Botanic Gardens held a toppingoff ceremony for the new Freyer-Newman Center last month. Staff, donors and board members signed the final beam before it was placed onto the structure.

The Freyer-Newman Center is the final project of the capital campaign launched by the gardens in 2007. The center will add four new gallery spaces and six new classrooms to the gardens. It will also add parking and give staff lab space for advanced research.

The building project cost $42 million, which includes $4.5 million to renovate the Boettcher Memorial Hall. The groundbreaking for the center was in May 2018. Staff said the building is on schedule to open in June 2020.

Lou’s Food Bar Denver-chef Frank Bonanno is shaking up Grant Street, closing one of his restaurant concepts and replacing it with another. Bones, an Asiannoodle bar, closed in late June, and Lou’s Food Bar opened in its place at the end of July. The restaurant is located at 701 Grant St. The restaurant offers Nashville-style hot chicken sandwiches. In the fall, Lou’s patio will connect with Bonanno’s neighboring restaurant, Vesper Lounge, according to a news release.

Bonanno operates 11 restaurant concepts throughout Denver. He first started selling Nashville-style sandwiches in the Milk Market food hall downtown.

Sports Castle A new developer has set its sights on the Sports Castle property on Broadway. New plans for 1000 Broadway were submitted to the city last month by Shears Adkins Rockmore,

a Denver architecture firm. The plans call for 13-story buildings on the north and east side of the original structure.

The plans are the first step before submitting formal designs to the city and may change.

Run for the Roses The new cocktail bar opened in the lower level of the Dairy Block building downtown in early May. The bar offers 52 different classic cocktails on its menu, as well as rotating seasonal drinks.

Run for the Roses also offers a small food menu.

The Dairy Block building is located at 1801 Blake St. and is home to the Milk Market food hall, which opened in June last year.

Burton The Vermont-based snowboard brand recently leased space in the River North Neighborhood with plans to open a retail store in early 2020. The store is about 2,500 square feet and will be located at 2649 Walnut St. The space will also have a showroom for clients and some office space for wholesale employees. Burton also operates a stand-alone store in Boulder. The brand also sells products to ski resorts in Colorado.

Although the brand is most known for its snowboarding equipment, Burton also sells apparel, luggage and other goods.

CLOSINGS Nicolo’s Pizza Nicolo’s Pizza closed last month in Capitol Hill. The business had been operating at 1209 E. 13th Ave. since 2010. Prior to that, the pizzeria was one door over at 1205 E. 13th Ave. A sign on the door said the business is “closed until further notice.” Brown paper had been taped up on all the windows.

There are three other Nicolo’s Pizza shops in Longmont, Lakewood and Highlands Ranch.

The businesses are independently owned franchises.

CHUN celebrates 50 years with community event Neighborhood organization also releases community feedback on historic house Staff Report Celebrating 50 years of community advocacy Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods will celebrate 50 years with an event at the Denver Botanic Gardens from 6:30-9 p.m. on Sept.

The event will have a wine-tasting as well as hors d’oeuvres from restaurants within CHUN’s coverage area, according to a news release. General admission tickets to the event are $50. CHUN is also offering VIP tickets for $75. VIP ticket holders can enter the gardens an hour early and receive a commemorative wine glass.

The Registered Neighborhood Organization launched in 1969 when a group of advocates got together to protest the city converting 11th and 12th avenues into oneway streets.

“As Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods grows and evolves, our board is excited to celebrate the organization’s rich, decades-long history of shaping the quality of life in the Capitol Hill community,” said Travis Leiker, the organization’s board president in the news release.

CHUN will continue using headquarters as community space CHUN is headquartered in the TearsMcFarlane House, which stands along the edge of Cheesman Park. The home is a historic property at 120 years old, and CHUN has been working to repair and restore the house. The house is used to host many of its meetings and events. CHUN also rents office space in the building.

Bill DeMaio, an architect and CHUN member, said in a news release that the neighborhood organization created focus groups for potential revenue streams and uses of the Tears-McFarlane house, 1290 Williams St. “Participants in these focus groups helped formulate a set of concepts that would help CHUN preserve the property, invigorate our nonprofit’s programming, and help create a funding stream for CHUN’s future operations and community support,” he said in the release.

In 2017, CHUN began working with City

Street Investors to conduct surveys and identify potential uses for the property. City Street Investors works to preserve historic properties and previously worked on Union Station downtown.

Survey respondents indicated the most desirable uses for the property are a local coffee house, a small, intimate wine bar, and opportunities for neighborhood enrichment.

Similarly, when asked which amenities survey respondents would use most frequently, the three most popular choices were a local coffee house, educational and enrichment opportunities, and a beer garden, the news release said.

New museum coming to Lakewood Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys will bring over 20,000 artifacts to the city

In 1927 Japan sent over 58 Japanese Friendship Dolls, including Miss Yokohama — Colorado’s Japanese Friendship Doll. The doll, constructed of wood, gofun (a traditional Japanese white chalky paint), human hair and glass eyes, is a physical representation of diplomatic history between Japan and the United States, according to History Colorado, an agency that is part of the Department of Higher Education.

The Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys, which features more than 20,000 artifacts, has been left without a home for nearly a year after it left its Denver location. But with an $800,000 purchase of a Lakewood facility, located at 830 Kipling St., the museum is hoping to reopen its doors again before the holidays.

“With the exposure here on Kipling and the growing arts community (in Lakewood) — it’s just a good fit for us.

We’re excited to be in Lakewood and in a fabulous building,” said Barbara Pontarelli, the museum’s board president. “(The building) is going to be an asset, and it allows us to grow our collection.”

The museum was previously located at 1880 N. Gaylord St. in the Pearce-McAllitster Cottage near City Park in Denver.

The property is a historic home owned by History Colorado.

Outside of Miss Yokohama, the museum’s collection includes artifacts from the 1800s, an extensive collection of toy soldiers, G.I. Joe action figures, the 8-bit Nintendo, Barbie dolls, antique dollhouses and other items. Wendy Littlepage, the museum’s director, said it plans to open in Lakewood in stages, hopefully before the holidays.

“We bring a lot of fun for multiple generations. (The museum) is an interesting way to learn about history,” said Littlepage.

The new building is double the size of its previous location and comes with better parking options for the museum’s guests and better ADA accommodations. “(The museum has) a really nice history.

I think Jeffco is very cultural,” said Pam Bales, president of the West Metro Chamber, which supports businesses across Jeffco. “It’s going to add to our arts and culture community, and it’s nice to have things in our own backyard.”

Cherry Creek North restaurants come together for annual event Staff Report The 11th annual Cherry Creek North Food and Wine returns this month, with 19 of the area’s local restaurants participating.

The festival allows people to sample

items from the menus of Cherry Creek’s restaurants and then vote on their favorites. Wine and liquor selections are also available at the event, as well as live music.

East High School mentorship program creates bonds for life

or the past 15 years, a group of mentors have been stepping up to guide East High School students through classes and into graduation. Although high school is just four years, many of the mentorstudent pairs stay in contact through college and into the rest of their lives.

For Jessica Pearson, who helped found the A+ Angels mentorship program in 2004, it started because she wasn’t quite ready for her son to graduate high school. She and a friend, Karen Press, began looking into ways to give back to East, 1600 City Park Esplanade, during the 2003-2004 school year. The new mentorship program launched that September.

The program is unique to East and George Washington High School in Denver Public Schools, Pearson said.

“East is kind of a flagship high school for DPS, and it has so many wonderful things,” she said. “But if you look at the achievement gap, it’s pretty substantial. That was the inspiration for this.”

Immediately, Pearson and Press began recruiting parents at East as mentors. Many who started with them are still volunteering today.

What started as a more casual program where mentors and students would meet on their own time has now grown into a threeclass period program at East. Aimee Ahrens has been helping run the program since 2008 as the supervising teacher.

“We start with academics because that’s the easy part,” Ahrens joked.

But in reality, pairing with a student is not always easy. Sometimes, mentors and students just don’t get along. Sometimes, students will skip meetings. But Ahrens notes that the best thing a mentor can do is to continue to show up and show that he or she cares.

“That’s something I have to tell the mentors all the time is you can’t take it personally.

They’re teenagers,” she said. “They want some-

one to show up and show interest in them.”

Mentors like Philip Greenberg have stayed in touch with every student they’ve ever worked with. Greenberg started in 2008 after he retired as an architect.

“My philosophy is you have to meet this kids where they’re at,” he said.

For Greenberg, all the students he has mentored came from a Spanish-speaking family. Since he speaks Spanish, he’s been able to connect with students, as well as their parents.

With some of his mentees, such as his current student, he’s also noticed that they need to catch up on English comprehension.

“It affects everything he does when he walks into school,” Greenberg said. “So my goal is

not to focus on math, focus on English — focus on just understanding comprehension and some of these other things will come into play.”

As students continue into high school, the relationship often changes, Pearson said. What started as a person helping a student with academics becomes a more personal relationship.

Mentors sometimes give life advice or help students get jobs. Many also help the student in their college or post-high school search.

Ahrens fell in love with the program as she watched those relationships blossom.

“Ultimately, it’s good for kids and for the adult volunteers that do it. It’s worthwhile,” Ahrens said. “It opens so many doors for these kids.”

A

small preschool class runs along the gravel paths in the sensory garden at Sewall Child Development Center.

One boy shouts that he saw a grasshopper, another chases after a flying bee. Moving on to an area with mulch, the class begins to look for creepy crawly bugs hidden under tree stumps.

In the year the garden has been open, the benefits to students, staff and even the community, have spoken for themselves, said Heidi Heissenbuttel, president and CEO of Sewall, which served 667 students total during the 2018-2019 school year. Sewall serves students aged 2.5-6 onsite, and offers toddler and infant outreach programming to 47 locations. The center offers inclusive education for students of all learning abilities and also offers developmental diagnostic and evaluation services. “(The garden) really gives the children access to the outdoors and natural learning environments,” she said. “The effects of

that seem soft, but you can’t even measure that.”

The sensory garden space was always part of the Sewall property, 940 Fillmore St., which also houses the REACH Charter School. What was once a .3-acre patch of weeds is now a colorful area filled with native plants where children can use all five of their senses.

The colorful buds are perfect for sight and smell, while mint and a small cherry tree allow students to taste.

Enclosed by a tall, vine-covered fence on the East 10th Avenue side of the property, the garden provides children with a quiet refuge, allowing them to take in natural sounds — or escape loud classrooms. Soft plants like lamb’s ears bring touch into the garden. The school added a planting space in the playground to bring more physical touch into the gardening curriculum.

“It allows them to interact with plants in a way that maybe they wouldn’t do if they weren’t queued to,” said Lee McCoy, a therapeutic horticulturist with the Denver Botanic Gardens. “It’s a really neat model for a school.”

Several Botanic Gardens staff members from the botanic garden have students at either Sewall or REACH. Those parents helped with planting some of the garden there, McCoy said. The Botanic Gardens also has its own sensory garden area. There’s a shaded meeting area where the nonprofit hosts some horticulture therapy classes as well as summer camps. Signs in its garden help direct visitors to what each plant is meant for, whether its sight, touch, sound, taste or smell.

The Botanic Gardens space is also fully accessible to people in wheel chairs, McCoy said.

Some plants on a rope-system can be lowered for people to touch and interact with.

“I think that’s one of the things, too, as a horticulturist that’s been tricky — at least initially to adjust to — is that sensory gardens are meant to be touched and not just observed,” McCoy said.

“You want a garden where people feel comfortable engaging with it.”

McCoy likes to mix recognizable plants with less familiar ones. In addition to regular basil, she might include some purple basil. One of the plants in the Denver Botanic Sensory Garden area folds in on itself when touched.

‘Gravitating’ to the garden Sewall first started planning for its community garden in 2016.

Denver resident Catharine McCord was researching the therapeutic effects of sensory gardens and how they could impact student learning for her master’s thesis. She interviewed students and parents at Sewall. Heissenbuttel said that after McCord finished her project, the school thought about implementing the parent’s work into Sewall’s curriculum.

The school applied for and received a $75,000 grant from the Colorado Garden Foundation in 2017 to begin building the garden at Sewall. The school opened them in May 2018.

In the year since building the garden, the school has also been inspired to begin shifting its curriculum toward Reggio Emilia, a teaching philisophy based in environmental learning and play that is also student-driven, according to Scholastic, Inc. McCord’s research and seeing the children in the garden space helped inspired the school to move toward that teaching philosophy.

“This is a huge piece of that outdoor learning environment,” Heissenbuttel said. “We’ve definitely seen the benefits of the kids gravitating toward here.”

The garden also has a large role in the community, Heissenbuttel said.

As the gardens were being built, volunteers from the Congress Park Neighbors Green Team helped with planting. School parents volunteered to weed or clean garden space. Independence House, which helps nonviolent offenders get back on their feet, helped with digging and some of the hard labor.

“It’s beyond what we would have dreamed of,” Heissenbuttel said.

The school also used native plants that required less water to teach families about using fewer resources, Heissenbuttel said.

Each student experiences the garden differently, said Heidi Heissenbuttel, Sewall’s president and CEO. “This is a lot of property, so if you’re watering this whole property, and we’re a nonprofit who struggles for funds, then we don’t want sustainability of this to take away from other resources,” Heissenbuttel said.

Staff at Denver Water acted as a consultant to Sewall for the garden. Jeff Tejral, water efficiency and reuse manager for Denver Water, said many creative opportunities in landscaping exist to create a space that’s not only functional and aesthetic, but water efficient as well.

Gardens and green space can be “more than just the leftover space where you didn’t put a building,” he said. In the case of the Sewall garden, it helped to bring the community together and educate them on low-water landscaping, or xeriscaping.

“That’s were the real, long-term social change happens,” Tejral said.

The garden has already begun to touch so many lives in the community, Tejral said, noting it inspired the Congress Park Green Team to learn about xeriscaping on its own. And children at Sewall and REACH have been introduced to gardening and nature in a very interactive way.

“It’s really about the people’s lives who experience that,” Tejral said. “We’re interested to see where it goes because we don’t know.”

Staff and volunteers at Sewall made sure to plant colorful plants and flowers for students in the sensory garden. They also made sure to select native plants that pollinators like this butterfly could enjoy.

The Center on Colfax, which serves the LGBTQ community, has been going through quite a bit of change over the past few months: The 43-year-old organization changed its name in March to better reflect the people using its services. And now, in the latest transition, Debra Pollock has stepped down as its CEO. Pollock — who wanted to advocate for medical care in the LGBTQ community — first started volunteering with The Center in 2003, when it was known as the GLBT Community Center. She joined the nonprofit’s development team a year later and became CEO in 2014.

“For 17 years we watched our fellow community members pass away from HIV/AIDS,” she said. “I realized at that point that if we don’t stick up for ourselves, no one else is going to do it for us.”

The Center has begun a national search for a replacement for Pollock, whose last day was July 26. She is moving to California with her wife to enjoy warmer weather. Linda Boedeker is serving as interim CEO. When reflecting on her 15 years at The Center, Pollock counts among her proudest accomplishments expanding the center’s services and finding the organization a permanent home. The Center bought the building it resides in at 1301 E. Colfax Ave. in 2009.

Pollock also worked to expand the historic research being done on the LGBTQ community.

“A lot of our history has been suppressed,” Pollock said.

In addition to collecting source material and having a historian at The Center, the organization has begun a recorded history of its members.

Not learning about your community’s history can lead to feelings of isolation, a reason for the impetus to start collecting that information, Pollock said.

“Everybody has a story,” Pollock said.

The Center added more family programming, too, with meet-ups for new parents and a holiday party where families can take pictures with Santa.

Protecting Denver’s vibrant business scene FROM THE EDITOR

e all have businesses we like to support because they have special meaning to us. For me, it’s a store filled with piles of books and board games.

Ever since I was little, Black and Read bookstore in Arvada has held a special place in my heart. Trips with my mom and stepdad meant looking through gaming books and dice. After the store expanded into the space next door, Black and Read filled it with all forms of music — CDs, vinyl and even a few eight-tracks. My dad would happily spend hours sorting through used CDs for his favorite artists.

Now, as an adult when I go to Black and Read, I spend time going through the overly stuffed bookshelves. I collect international cookbooks, and most of my collection has come from Black and Read.

I also found old copies of Ansel Adams books on photography there.

I love the store for its used-book smell. For the edgy newspaper and photo clippings taped to the register. But mostly, I love walking into the store and remembering what it was like to be a kid and being pleasantly overwhelmed by piles upon piles of books.

In this issue, you’ll find two stories on local businesses.

In one, we asked locals about their favorite neighborhood restaurants. We found that, while people do enjoy eating at those restaurants for the food, they also love going to them because they know their money is supporting someone living here in Denver.

What started as a fun story getting to know local

unsung restaurants quickly became a story on how residents band together to support their neighborhood businesses.

The other business story is part of our ongoing Growing Pains series. We wanted to ask these questions: How has development and construction in Denver impacted its local businesses? What happens to a neighborhood when those businesses close?

In recent months, Denver has started to see some of its legacy businesses teeter on the edge of closing.

Most recently, Tom’s Diner and the Bonnie Brae Tavern have both filed for non-historic status, which makes it easier for a building to be demolished.

I couldn’t be more excited — was that a squirrel?! I mean, I couldn’t be more excited to serve you.

I walked, while Chris rolled, on a platform of what’s good for dogs is probably good for people, too. The kinds of dog- and peoplehappy neighborhoods I want to help you build are ones where you can walk (or roll) to get to just about anything you might need within 20 minutes. Things you might need?

Parks, restaurants, services, work, groceries and so much more.

Twenty-minute communities are a lot like what we used to have in Denver just a few decades back. These communities are places where we get to smell (visit is what Chris calls it) all sorts of neato people that live near us because people are out and about instead of sitting in their cars. I know Chris has rolled up his sleeves and is already getting started.

Chris was sworn in on the City and County Building’s front porch on July 15. It was hot outside and I was a good boy during all that talking. By the end of the week we had set up some furniture, computers and a water bowl – the basics we need to start diving into issues affecting District 10.

Who are the “we” I mention? Well, you now have three council aides — who all live in D10 — to help serve all the people who live here! Each aide will help Chris cover legislative issues, constituent concerns and com-

Diving into water gardening

re you looking for a way to dip your toes into the world of water gardening before jumping in head first?

A container water garden is the perfect solution. These miniature ponds can provide all of the components of a large-scale water feature – aquatic plants, moving water, fish and the ability to draw wildlife – on a smaller and less laborious scale.

Containers designed to hold water – often referred to as water bowls – are glazed inside and out, have no drainage holes and come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Plastic liners can be added to other vessels such as half whiskey barrels to hold water. When choosing a container, consider the size of the space it will be placed in, the type of plants you want to grow, whether fish will be added, and if a fountain will be used. If you plan to add fish, make sure the container does not contain copper as this is toxic to fish.

Aquatic plants can be divided into four groups based on growth habits: floating, submerged, floating-leaved and marginal.

Floating plants such as Water Lettuce (Pistia stratioides) and Fairy Moss (Azolla carolineana) have leaves that float on the water’s surface and roots that trail in the water beneath them. They are excellent for filtering and shading the water.

Eel Grass (Vallisneria americana) and Dwarf Sagittaria (Sagittaria subulata) are examples of submerged plants that grow with their roots and leaves completely beneath the surface. These plants oxygenate the water and feed on excess nutrients, which in turn reduces algae growth.

in June after 40 years in business. Shelby’s location first opened as the Pink Lady bar, and the building had been standing since 1906. The property is set to be demolished later this year for new condo construction.

For Tom’s, the story is not quite over.

Neighbors applied for historic status for the building, which would make it very difficult for a building to be demolished.

The Landmark Preservation Commission with the city unanimously decided last month to move the application forward to council, something that rarely happens when a building owner is opposed.

Local businesses not only help the fabric of Denver’s economy, but help to create community. Many local businesses owners help in community events or fundraise for

thorne (Aponogeton distachyos). Growing with their roots anchored in the soil underwater and their leaves floating on the surface, they also shade the water and provide protection for fish from predators.

Marginal aquatics grow in shallow water or boggy soil at the pond’s edge and include hardy species such as Water Iris (Iris virginica, Iris versicolor, Iris louisiana), and Pickerel Plant (Pontederia cordata), as well as tropical species such as Taro (Colocasia hybrids) and Umbrella Palm (Cyperus alternifolius).

These plants feed on nutrients in the water and provide habitat for frogs and insects like dragonflies to lay their eggs.

Two primary methods are used to plant water bowls. The first is to add a heavy clay loam to the container. Soil mixes with light materials like peat and perlite should be avoided as these will float to the surface.

Plant a marginal or floating-leaved plant directly into the soil and fill the container with water.

A second method is to fill the container with water and place individually potted marginal, submerged and floating-leaved plants inside, leaving space for fish as well as floating plants. A small fountain can be added if the container is placed near an electrical outlet where a submersible pump can be used. If fish are added, opt for small varieties such as goldfish or minnows and avoid large species including koi, which will quickly outgrow a container. A good rule of thumb is to add one inch of fish per gallon of water.

Some businesses, such as the Whittier Cafe at 1710 E. 25th Ave., transcend neighborhood boundaries. They carry cultural significance for minority groups, such as Denver’s black community in the case of the Whittier Cafe. Local businesses, in the words of Whittier’s owner, Millete Birhanemaskel, create a “place of healing.”

Openings and closings are a natural cycle of business. But some residents fear the big boom of development will kill the mom-and-pop stores that make Denver, Denver.

One thing I’ve learned in writing for Colorado Community Media is that Denverites love to support their local businesses. In our Growing Pains series this month, I met with people devising different solutions to bring in more customers in spite of large construction projects. It gives me hope that Denver will not become a land of chains, and that the vibrant landscape of local business will survive a little longer.

Water bowls are fairly easy to maintain.

Regular tasks include fertilizing marginal and floating-leaved plants monthly during the growing season with an aquatic plant fertilizer (submerged and floating plants feed on nutrients in the water), removing spent leaves and blooms and monitoring for mosquito larvae. Products such as mosquito bits, which contain beneficial bacteria that feed on these larvae, can be added monthly. If algae growth is a problem, algaecides that are safe for fish and plants can be added weekly to maintain water clarity.

Winter care includes draining the container to prevent expanding ice from causing it to crack. Hardy plants can be brought into a garage where they will not freeze solid and should also be kept from drying out. Tropical marginal plants can be moved inside to a sunny room or simply treated as annuals and purchased again the following year. It is important to note that aquatic plants and non-native fish should never be added to natural waterways. Goldfish can be kept in an aquarium indoors through the winter months.

“That’s been one way to try to counter growth,” Noel said. “Thanks to the landmark ordinance, we do have some protection.”

But at the same time, Noel worries the city might not be doing enough.

It is very rare for the Landmark Preservation Commission to recommend historic status on a building when an owner opposes it.

Denver’s booming growth has stirred up a multitude of issues, from affordable housing to equitable neighborhood planning. But a key one — and an emotional one — resides in the birth-and-death life cycle of business that sees longtime places close because of rising rents and construction that hurts revenue.

But new businesses also are welcome: They can create excitement in a neighborhood. Often, they fill unmet community needs such as small markets in a food desert or an ethnic restaurant that reflects Denver’s international communities.

And businesses along Colfax Avenue and in Cherry Creek find themselves in the middle of it all, needing to adjust, rebrand or find new ways to bring people into their stores.

Construction projects can sometimes disrupt local businesses with loud noise, or by taking up sidewalk and parking spaces. Places like Cherry Creek North have been using events to try and draw more people into the area to frequent their businesses.

Building more business Although the construction can be a burden at the time, better walkability and more apartments in an area can also mean more people shopping in the future.

Brian Phetteplace, director of economic development with the Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District, said that within the last year six large construction projects just wrapped up in the small shopping area. The Cherry Creek North district extendds from First Avenue to Third Avenue and from University Boulevard to Steele Street.

During construction, pedestrian traffic remained fairly steady, Phetteplace said. The fact that Cherry Creek was already walkable helped keep those numbers up, he added. The business district recently relaunched its brand with a new logo. Creating a stronger brand and hosting local events such as sidewalk sales and the upcoming Cherry Creek North Food and Wine, are some of the things the organization is doing to boost numbers as well.

People spend the most time in Cherry Creek North on the weekend with some heavier weekday traffic during the lunch hour, according to Phetteplace. The district recently installed sensors to help track pedestrian traffic, Phetteplace said. Now that construction projects are over, he’s hopeful more people will start to come out.

Development in Cherry Creek has also recently brought in several big name businesses to the shopping district, such as an Amazon store and Yeti coolers.

“The construction and the new space is proving to be an attraction,” Phetteplace said.

On top of those big names, Phetteplace said 50% of Cherry Creek North’s businesses are owned by women, and 70% are considered small businesses. The district promotes those factors to attract more customers, Phetteplace said.

In north central Denver, Frank Locantore is preparing for a large

construction project on his end of town — the city’s new Bus Rapid Transit Plan on East Colfax Avenue.

The project will completely change the layout of the street, placing buses in the center with new and improved stations at several intersections.

Locantore, executive director of the Colfax Ave Business Improvement District, has been a part of the planning process for Colfax bus routes since the beginning. Working with the city has meant he can also help prepare some of the businesses in his area for construction. One issue stressed in planning meetings and focus groups has been ensuring that construction impacts are lowered, Locantore said.

“There’s very little that’s either 100% good or 100% bad. It’s the execution of it,” he said. “It’s been a very strong message to do as little disruption as possible.”

Educating businesses will be a big component. Another idea is using back doors to businesses so customers can avoid areas of heavy construction, Locantore said. Since construction workers are there anyway, Locantore wants to look into getting those workers in the doors of businesses for lunch breaks or other shopping needs.

On the city side, construction budgets often include a percentage for art projects in the area, Locantore said. Instead of an art project, he hopes to work with the city to create a grant system for businesses that may need extra assistance because of heavy construction that prevents customers from shopping.

Locantore is a firm believer in the Rapid Transit Plan on Colfax, saying that it will bring more people onto the bus, which will mean more people walking — and shopping — on the street. But he also said he wants to be “clear-eyed about the destruction” that could happen to a business budget during construction.

“Let’s make sure that the businesses that have been really working over the past few decades don’t get pushed out,” he said.

Although there has been a lot of construction in Cherry Creek North, Brian Phetteplace said the district’s pedestrian traffic has remained steady. Phetteplace is the director of economic development for the Cherry Creek North Business District.

Losing history While construction impacts can squeeze the budgets of some Denver businesses, others are being completely erased.

Small legacy businesses, such as Shelby’s Bar and Grill, are being exchanged for new office buildings or housing projects. Shelby’s, which was located at 519 18th St., was a single-story building originally built in 1906. Although it started as a funeral parlor, the building spent most of its life as a local bar.

Antelope Real Estate, the building’s former owner, sold the property in March 2018, according to city records. Over the next several months demolition plans kept being pushed back before Shelby’s finally closed its doors in June of this year.

Bars and restaurants are often the target of new development because many are in one- or two-story buildings, said Tom Noel, a professor and associate chair with the history department at the University of Colorado in Denver.

“Any time you have a boom there’s always more of a threat,” Noel said of the risk to businesses.

Aside from the businesses themselves, Noel added that many older buildings in Denver have historical significance. He jokes that his

doctorate is in Colorado bars since he has written a few books on the subject, which included information on Shelby’s. One area he pointed out that has historical significance is a stretch of buildings on Larimer Street in the Lower Downtown neighborhood that used to be part of skid row, or buildings on Market Street that were formerly brothels during Denver’s earliest days.

Many of the “the old-time favorite bars are gone,” Noel said, and without those businesses, Denver begins to lose what makes it unique.

“We’ll become another generic city,” he said.

The city’s landmark ordinance helps provide some buildings a layer of protection. Exterior alterations on historic buildings need to be approved, and once a building is protected it becomes extremely difficult to demolish.

Larimer Square is an example of how the landmark ordinance helped prevent development, Noel said.

Initial plans from Urban Villages wanted to demolish a historic building and add two taller buildings. Residents and preservation organizations such as Historic Denver opposed the project. Now, Urban Villages is working with the community to create plans that keep

Denver residents Jonel Beach and Sam Dorrance presented their evidence at the July 23 Landmark Preservation Commission hearing on why the building should be historically protected. With prominent architects from the Googie design era, Denver history as part of the White Spot chain, and an orienting location on Colfax, the diner hit every category it needed for a historical designation and then some.

Much of the current building’s historic integrity, Dorrance said, is due to Messina himself, who worked to preserve it when he first began running Tom’s 20 years ago.

“We understand that this process is creating uncertainty, so we are continuing to work diligently toward a win-win option that honors the investment and care he has put in the building,” Dorrance said during the meeting.

Historic Denver, a nonprofit preservation organization, often works with building owners to try and find a compromise: keeping the historic integrity of a building while still finding a way for property owners to make money off a potential development. In this case, Annie Levinsky, executive director of Historic Denver, recommended the property boundary be redone to only include the building, allowing Messina and developers to potentially build on the rest of the property.

Noel believes these compromises are the best of both worlds.

It’s important, he said, to “realize the owner has some legitimate interest in making some money out of the project.”

The Landmark Preservation Commission unanimously voted to move the Tom’s Diner application forward to City Council, adding in a further recommendation following the suggestion from Levinsky and the Historic Denver team.

But Messina has his concerns about the landmark preservation.

The building that houses Tom’s Diner is old and in need of repair, he said. While the plot Tom’s Diner sits on is zoned for eight stories, keeping the building the same could lock the one-story property in place forever, he said, also reducing the property’s value.

Messina believes the building has run its course.

“A restaurant will not sustain that corner,” he said after the meeting. “It really needs change.”

‘You don’t have to erase us’ Local businesses like Whittier Cafe are more than a neighborhood coffee joint

ost neighborhoods have a local coffee shop or a favorite restaurant. But some businesses transcend geographic boundaries because of a service or value they provide to the community.

The Whittier Cafe, a coffee shop in the neighborhood of the same name at 1710 E. 25th Ave., has quickly become one of those businesses. The five-year-old shop is owned

by Millete Birhanemaskel, who consciously chose the Whittier neighborhood for its cultural history in Denver.

In the 1930s, when Denver used redlining to segregate neighborhoods between black and white families, Whittier was one of the first neighborhoods in the city where black people could buy homes. As Denver has started to grow, Birhanemaskel said she has

begun to see black-owned businesses close.

The black community is also starting to move out of the neighborhood, she said.

Denver’s black community needs those businesses to survive, she said: They become a refuge, a place where the community can see and be with people who look like them.

“We’ve kind of become the anchor,” Birhanemaskel said of the coffee shop.

Earlier this year, Birhanemaskel’s landlord, the Mohamad Ahmad Jodeh Trust, put her building up for sale. It has since gone under contract. Birhanemaskel is in a five-year lease, which gives her some protection, she said.

She has also retained a lawyer to help her keep in contact with the landlord. No plans for the building have been announced yet.

Birhanemaskel said she wished the landlord had included her in the conversation about the sale.

“I don’t have an interest in stopping development or stopping growth or stopping improvement,” she said on the potential sale.

“You can develop this space and still include us.”

Birhanemaskel works in real estate as her side business. She said the feeling in Denver right now is to scrape and start fresh, which

means that a lot of older businesses get left behind or have to close as a result.

“I feel like the belief is, in order to improve something, you’ve gotta erase what’s there,” she said. “You don’t have to erase us. We don’t have to be carnage in that process.”

In addition to being a safe haven for black culture, the Whittier Cafe has become a place where Denver’ activists meet.

“There’s aren’t many spaces left where you can do that,” Birhanemaskel said. “I think Hooked on Colfax is still a great spot where a lot of activists go, but Purple Door has shut down. It’s kind of a nightmare that we’re losing all these spaces where people can organize.”

Activism is in Birhanemaskel’s blood. Her father was the governor during the Ethiopian Civil War. As he worked to build a resistance, her family was pushed into Sudan. Birhanemaskel was born in a refugee camp there.

Eventually, her father was jailed. When the United Nations offered to relocate him to a new country, he picked Colorado because he already had a friend here.

On the local level, the Whittier Cafe hosted a fundraiser in 2015 for the family of Jessica Hernandez, a 17-year-old girl who was shot and killed by Denver Police. Hernandez was behind the wheel of a stolen car when she was shot. The city later paid a $1 million

settlement to her family in 2017, and reversed its policy allowing police officers to shoot at fleeing cars. The city also stopped allowing the police department to release the criminal history of shooting victims.

Birhanemaskel agreed to host the event in 2015 after a different coffee shop refused, saying they didn’t want the activists there. Since then, she said activists consider the cafe to be a home base when talking about progressive candidates or violence in the community.

“This seems to be the space where everyone comes to organize, which I think is kind of a beautiful, natural organic thing that happened,” she said.

Birhanemaskel said she’s concerned for what will happen when minority-owned businesses start to close down. Where will those people go to find members of their own communities?

Neighborhood businesses also force people to interact with people in ways that they might not normally. They meet people and get to know them, she said. When the news broke that her business might have to move when the building sold, the community responded, hoping to protect the Whittier Cafe.

Birhanemaskel said it showed what love in a community business can mean.

“It is a place of healing,” she said. “It’s more than just the product.”

e recently stopped by Washington Park, City Park, and Civic Center Eats to ask visitors about their favorite hole-in-the-wall and local restaurants. Rather than ask for suggestions on famous restaurants, we asked for their favorite unsung restaurants. Whether it’s a place down the block, or a one-of-a-kind concept across the city, locals appreciated the staples that have served new and longtime Denverites.

In these interviews with locals, we realized it was often the experience at these local restaurants that kept them coming back. While good food may have drawn them through the door, it was the relationships they developed with owners, chefs and staff that kept them coming back time and time again.

When talking about local restaurants, it’s hard to forget the local restaurateurs who create them. With their insight into the industry, and years of

experience, we wondered about their favorite places to eat. The restaurateurs listed below have each contributed to the Denver food scene in new and unique ways — and have found their own unsung spots that treat them like locals.

Locals Randy Crupper has lived in and out of Washington Park since he was a teenager. Crupper shared that he appreciates the uniqueness of local places in contrast to the experience of eating at large chains. Crupper mentioned both The Washington Park Grille and Reivers Bar and Grill as some of his favorites.

Reivers Bar and Grill has been located on South Gaylord Street since it opened in 1977. It is known for serving dinner and drinks in the restaurant’s homey interior and lively outside patio.

“I’ve been hanging out there since I was a teenager,” Crupper said of the Washington Park Grille. Crupper shared that he often enjoys a beer at the bar while he waits for his takeout.

“The homey kind of places never get old,” Crupper said.

At Civic Center Eats, a large gathering of food trucks downtown in the center of Civic Center Park, Diane Herron, a Westminster resident, shared her favorite spot to eat when she’s in the city. Proto’s Pizza, a locally owned restaurant chain with locations in and outside of Denver.

Herron specifically likes the location on 15th street in the Lower Highlands neighborhood.

“It’s different and fun and friendly,” Herron said. Herron shared that Proto’s Pizza, in addition to other local restaurants, help local neighborhoods and adds to their unique charm.

“They’re locals. It helps the community, it helps the economy.”

While waiting for her friend at Civic Center Eats, Madyson Schmida, a resident of the Speer neighborhood, shared her favorite restaurants for an authentic dining experience. Schmida has been exploring the Denver food scene with friends through monthly dinners at a new local restaurant each

month.

“I like authenticity. I like things that are more unique and original,” Schmida said.

El Taco De Mexico, located in the Santa Fe Arts District and one of Schmids go-to local spots, has been serving authentic Mexican food since it opened in 1985.

Additionally, Schmida mentioned the Candlelight Tavern, a neighborhood tavern that offers food, bar games and an open-arm attitude from their staff and regulars. “They have a really great cheeseburger basket. It’s one of my favorites,” Schmida said.

At Civic Center Eats, Roger Letzig of Aurora and Jon Knepp of Arvada shared their favorite spots that they always go to when they are downtown for work. When eating in Denver, they said they look for restaurants that offer variety.

“Otherwise you just get stuck in a rut,” Letzig said.

One of the spots they like to visit is D’Corazon,a locally owned restaurant on Blake Street in the Lower Downtown neighborhood. The traditional Mexican restaurant is known for

its traditional cuisine in a modern updated locale. With the restaurant’s tagline reading “Best Mexican food in LoDo… Period,” it’s clear that D’Corazon means business.

“It’s just an amazing place for carnitas,” Knepp said of D’Corazon.

Five on Black, a Brazilian grill, has become one of Letzig’s favorites. Just as Letzig looks for variety, Five on Black delivers with a menu that aims to serve something new in healthy and tasty ways.

“You’re dealing with somebody who lives in the same place that you do,” Letzig added. Restaurateurs living in Denver have created restaurant experiences and food that caters to the palettes of their customers. These local restaurants know “what it means to be a Denverite.”

meets Five Points, La Pasadita Inn was described by Wolkon as “hidden in plain sight.”

For Wolkon, the top-notch fajitas were the reason he first stepped into the restaurant, and the burritos, green chile and salsa have always kept him coming back.

“A great and authentic Uptown family-owned Mexican spot,” Wolkon said.

As the owner of Secret Sauce Food & Beverage — which includes Ace, Vesta, Steuben’s Uptown and Steuben’s Arvada — Wolkons is familiar with the Denver food scene. As a veteran of the scene, opening his first restaurant when he was 25, Wolkon knows what makes local restaurants different from chains.

“Neighborhood restaurants become more than just a restaurant. They engrain themselves in the fabric of the community,” Wolkon said, adding that local restaurants and their staff have

a genuine approach and passion for what they do. “You can usually count on your neighborhood joint to be open during a snowstorm or have a bartender work as a personal therapist to the community.”

Some of Wolkon’s other favorites include Domo, Melita’s, and Guido’s Pizza.

Andrea Frizzi is owner and chef of Il Posto, Vero Boulder and Vero located inside Denver Central Market.

“There are two restaurants that I love the most in this city – Sushi Sasa and Table Six,” Frizzi said.

“For Sushi Sasa, I feel like the sushi counter is my own little hole in the wall,” Frizzi said. He describes the dining experience at Sushi Sasa as intimate and friendly. His favorites are the Monkfish Liver and the Salmon Tartare roll. “I’ve made friends with the owners and employees, and they’ve become like family to me.”

Another of Frizzi’s favorites is Table Six, known for American comfort food in the Congress Park neighborhood.

I’m a tough judge when it comes to pasta,” Frizzi said.

Additionally, Frizzi shared that Table Six feels like the American version of his restaurant in the River North neighborhood, Il Posto. This has made it feel a little homier every time he goes.

“My culinary style is all about the complicated simplicity of food, wine and life,” Frizzi said.

“My family and I love to go to Superstar,” Osaka said. Superstar is located in Athmar Park, a local restaurant serving Asian cuisine.

Osaka praised Superstar for its extensive menu and consistency.

“They’re great for Dim Sum or when we usually go, for Sunday dinner … and anything we order is very tasty and consistent,” Osaka said.

alike. Osaka Ramen is his take on a traditional ramen shop with heavy influences from the Japanese comfort food he grew up eating. Dishes like “My Wife’s Donuts” and others on the menu are a nod to his family members.

Osaka’s 12@Madiosn restaurant, located in the Congress Park neighborhood, offers diners a changing monthly menu and globally inspired cuisine.

“12@Madison is a take on an earlier concept that used to be in the Ballpark Neighborhood, Twelve Restaurant … When we moved to the Congress Park Neighborhood, we took the same approach with food but now offer it in a small plate format,” Osaka said of his restaurant. “This gives you the ability to sample more things, and literally taste your way around the world!”

Frank Bonanno is the chef behind Bonanno Concepts, which includes Denver Milk Market, Vesper Lounge, Luca and Mizuna. Bonanno is also the host of Rocky mountain PBS’s Chef Driven, a local program offering a glimpse into the culinary world.

For Bonanno, there are many hole-in-the-wall spots that he loves in Denver.

“I would say for my Mexican fix, El Taco de México, that is my go-to place,” Bonanno said, adding that the restaurant used to serve out of a trailer.

It now has a brick-and-mortar location that seats about 20 people. “I’ll go get 12 smothered chile rellenos burritos.”

Additionally, Bonanno mentioned Mr. Luckys, a sandwich shop, known for its gourmet sub sandwiches, and Don’s Lounge, for drinks after work.

As a longtime restaurateur of the Denver area, Bonanno said local restaurants serve good food and a better atmosphere.

“I would say in Denver, New Saigon…It’s a real hole in the wall,” Bonanno said. “Their Vietnamese food is some of the best that I’ve ever had.

Not a lot of people seem to know about it or go to it — if you blink you’ll miss it when you drive by.”

With Bonanno’s insight into the food scene, we asked what local restaurants mean to him.

“I think Mr. Luckys and Don’s, they are where we work so it’s super easy to get to and I really believe that’s the way that dining is going,” he said. “It’s really all about neighborhoods.”

Roy Wood, a former volunteer at The Center, used to come to The Center every day after he retired. He worked as the volunteer librarian.

“He was of a generation where he couldn’t come out to his family, couldn’t come out at work, so he came here every single day,” Pollock said.

When Wood died, he left 90% of his estate to The Center. The gift led to the vision of buying a permanent space for the community center, Pollock said. Part of the $1.2 million estate went toward the building’s down payment.

“Roy is still very much a part of what we do every day here,” Pollock said.

“My favorite part about working at The Center is getting to bring my whole self to work,” Pollock said. “When you’re LGBT you’re constantly assessing every situation — see if it’s safe to come our or not.”

For outgoing CEO Diane Pollock, who led a $3.2 million capital campaign to buy and renovate the building, it was important to find the community center a permanent home so that LGBTQ Coloradans would always have a safe place to be.

PrideFest, the annual LGBTQ community event, is hosted by The Center.

This is unique, Pollock said. Very few community centers in the United States run Pride events, which are usually run by a stand-alone organization whose sole purpose is organizing the event. During Pollock’s time at The Center, Pride expanded into a two-day event. The nonprofit also added a family area so that everyone could participate.

For David Garcia, board president of The Center who began volunteering in 2005, the addition of the family area was one of the most crucial changes to the event because it allows family members come to support people in the LGBTQ community. Couples in the LGBTQ community also bring their children.

“That is, I think, what really makes me proud. It’s exactly what the community needs,” Garcia said. “From the outside looking in, who may not quite understand the LGBTQ community itself, it gives them a chance to say `They’re not that much different from us.’ ” The idea has also started to spread to other Pride events in the nation, he added.

Although The Center offers a wealth of services for all ages, such as Rainbow Alley for youths and SAGE of the Rockies for adults 50 and older, the nonprofit has come mean much more to many in Colorado’s LGBTQ community, said Garcia, noting that its reach also spreads to surrounding states that may not offer as many services.

Garcia started as a front-desk volunteer. He had just moved to Colorado and wanted to meet people within the LGBTQ community. The gay bars in Denver are easy to find, but represent only a small sliver of the community here, he said. Volunteering at The Center helped him build lasting friendships that he treasures.

“I got to communicate firsthand with everybody that the center touched,” Garcia said. “It really touches me and sticks with me and I’m proud to be as-

Chef Zorba’s Authentic Greek Cuisine The Congress Park staple celebrated its 40th anniversary in May. The restaurant, at 2626 E.

12th Ave., held an anniversary celebration inviting guests to bring notes and memories for a time capsule that was buried on the property.

Over the years, the restaurant has changed hands a few times. Karen LuKanic bought the restaurant one year ago. LuKanic has largely kept the menu and appearance of Zorba’s the same, although she did expand the bar section of the menu.

No Cow No Cow, a Denver-based brand of protein bars, started selling its products nationally in Kroger stores in June. In addition to being dairy-free, No Cow bars are low in sugar and use whey-based proteins.

Denver Water proposes removal of lead pipes Plan will be submitted to EPA for approval in August

Denver Water is looking to tackle lead in consumer drinking water head-on — by removing all the lead pipes in its system.

The utility organization recently announced a new three-part plan to remove the pipes in its service area over the next 15 years. Jim Lochhead, the CEO and manager at Denver Water, said that in order to get ahead of health concerns with lead in the water, “the ultimate solution is just removing these lines altogether.”

The organization will present the plan to the Environmental Protection Agency in August, and expects a decision by the end of 2019.

Lochhead estimates the plan will cost between $300 million and $500 million depending on how many lead pipes there are.

In addition to replacing an estimated 50,000 to 90,000 lead service lines, Denver Water will distribute water filters to customers who may have lead lines, so they can get lead out of their drinking water before their lines are replaced.

The utility will also increase the pH levels from 7.8 to 8.8, in order to prevent lead from leaking into the water.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment asked Denver Water in March 2018 to begin the process of adding orthophosphate to its system by 2020. Similar to increased pH levels, orthophosphate creates a coating on the inside of pipes and reduces the likelihood of lead getting into water.

Ron Falco, the safe water drinking program manager for the department, said the state looked into putting the additive into the system after lead levels in Denver Water were too high in 2012. Falco added that several utilities in the state are already using orthophosphate.

“It showed that (Denver Water’s) current corrosion control that they use might not be optimized,” he said.

There are not dangerous levels of lead in the water currently. Denver Water collects tens of thousands of water samples annually, Locchead said. EPA rules require that action is taken if more than 10% of homes tested have lead levels above 15 parts per billion. The only time this happened in Denver Water was in 2012.

Homes built before 1951 are the most likely to have lead pipes, as Denver Water began to allow galvanized and copper pipes in construction in 1949. Copper pipes continued to have lead solders to connect the pipes. Denver Water banned the use of lead pipes in 1971, according to its website. Lochhead said the utility would use this information, as well as testing and permitting data they have collected to help determine which houses need line replacements.

“It’s a number of different ways to kind of sleuth out where we think they’re going to be,” he said. “Over the course of 15 years, we’re hopeful that our methods for identifying these lines will continue to improve.”

Denver Water’s policy is to remove lead pipes when it comes across them. Around 1,200 lines are replaced every year. The organization also offers free water testing to homes.

Denver Water serves around 1.4 million people in metro Denver.

Removing the problem Denver Water also had concerns about using orthophosphate. On one hand, Lochhead called adding chemicals to drinking water a “delicate balance.” Denver Water wants to ensure its product is clean and safe to drink, but also tastes good for customers.

“We would prefer to avoid adding new chemicals to our drinking water,” he said. “We like to produce a really good product.”

Water corrodes pipes such as these lead ones, which then causes lead to get in drinking water.

Denver Water has created a proposal to remove all lead pipes from its system over the next 15 years.

Its research indicated that while orthophosphate would reduce lead levels by 74%, it would take 60 years to do so. The organization also had concerns about investing in adding the additive to its water, when other organizations such as the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District would have to later remove orthophosphate from its system in order to prevent it from going directly into waterways.

Neighboring water utilities in Highlands Ranch and Parker in the south, and Adams County and Thornton in the north, connect to Denver Water’s service network. Those entities would also have to remove orthophosphate from their systems.

A spokesperson from Metro Wastewater said the company was not taking questions at this time because the plan is still pending EPA approval.

“This issue presents an opportunity to collaboratively implement a comprehensive regional plan that prioritizes the full spectrum of public health factors,” reads a statement on the Metro Wastewater website. “By making smart infrastructure investments, like those Denver Water has recommended to CDPHE, we can maintain the top-quality drinking water we enjoy today while targeting and removing the source of lead contamination to permanently fix this critically important public health issue.”

Lochhead estimated that implementing orthophosphate into the Denver Water system would cost between $500 million and $700 million, as well as annual costs to purchase the

additive.

Denver Water also had concerns about the environmental impact orthophosphate would have. Many of the organization’s customers use water for their lawns, which ends up in local streams and rivers. Under the right conditions, this could cause accelerated algae growth.

Falco said that it often takes time for those impacts to become apparent. Smaller utilities have not seen issues yet, but Falco added that Denver Water is one of the largest water providers in the state.

Denver Water worked with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, as well as Metro Wastewater and environmental groups to come up with an alternative solution, and developed the lead pipe removal plan. If approved, it will be the largest removal program in the United States.

If the EPA does not approve the plan, Denver Water will begin implementing orthophosphate into its system in March 2020. Falco said that Denver Water has already been working with Public Health to prepare for implementation next year.

Lochhead said he thinks that the removal plan is safest. Instead of mitigating the issue through additives, the pipes are replaced altogether.

“The water that we have in our system in safe. It’s a plumbing issue in the system that needs to be corrected,” he said. “We think what we are proposing is more protective of public health.”

New library program allows people to use bike repair kits

The bike repair stand in front of the Denver Central Library is a busy place. Cyclists make unplanned stops to fix a flat tire, adjust equipment and make minor repairs, then resume riding.

More than 50 people checked out the kits during the 2018 trial, held at seven branches, including the central one downtown, with a total cost of $1,500. And this year, nearly 100 riders have borrowed the kits.

The Denver Community Active Living Coalition, a program of the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment(DDPHE), created the bikerepair program. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment funded it. DDPHE got enough funding to expand the program to all 26 library branches this year.

“We’re also working with libraries to hold events this summer to train users and residents on how to fix a flat tire,” said Kayla Gilbert, Built Environment Equity Program manager at DDPHE. “While we provided a lot of the startup funding, our goal is to create a program that will live longer than our funding.”

Community Active Living Coalition seeks to provide “equitable access to safe, vibrant places to walk, bike, take transit and play,” and though the number of bicyclists is growing, some people may avoid the sport because they know little about basic maintenance or fixing a flat tire. So the coalition approached Denver Public Library to join the program. With all those branches, the library system reaches a lot of people.

“The library is a community safe haven and resource,” Zittel said. “If a bicycle repair is needed, we can be a resource for that.”

One reason Community Active Living Coalition is involved is because it sees

bicycling “as a growing part of Denver’s commitment to sustainability, community health and safe streets.”

The bike repair kits include a bike stand, tire patches, wrenches, tire-removing tool and an air pump to re-inflate tires. Users also have access to illustrated instructions written in English and Spanish.

To further promote cycling, Community Active Living Coalition has enlisted help from such organizations as Trips for Kids Denver Metro, Bikes Together and Bicycle Colorado, which have trained Denver Public Library staffers to help cyclists who may not be familiar with bike maintenance.

Think libraries are just for books? Zittel points out the free bike-repair kits are but one of several services the library offers that don’t involve books. Event for youths marks launch of tickets for upcoming exhibit

Denver-area schools and day cares came to the Denver Art Museum to celebrate an upcoming exhibit which will feature around 120 paintings by Claude Monet.

Following a speech by Christoph Heinrich, director of the DAM, artist Anna Kay taught students from the Sophia Montessori Academy in Washington Park how to use pastels to draw. Staff from the Denver Botanic Gardens brought in a small bridge,

as well as pots filled with water lilies and other plants to recreate Monet’s famed bridge paintings. The event also included a stand with tissue paper where children could create their own flowers. The festivities were held in front of the DAM’s Hamilton Building, 100 W. 14th Ave. Parkway.

The June 25 event was the launch of ticket sales for the DAM’s Claude Monet:The Truth of Nature exhibit, which will open on Oct. 21. The exhibit was co-organized by the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, Germany. After the Denver exhibt closes in February, the Monet paintings will head to Museum Barberini.

The works will span Monet’s entire career, including the first painting he exhibited at the age of 18 in 1858, as well as a painting completed a few months before his death in 1926, according to a release announcing the exhibit from the DAM. Tickets are required for the Monet exhibit. Adult tickets are $27 and youth tickets for ages 6-18 are $5. For more information, go to www.denverartmuseum.org.

City to continue looking at common-consumption license License would allow people to carry alcohol within established areas

Possibly as soon as 2020 it may be legal for Denverites to carry open, alcoholic beverages from one liquor-licensed business to the next within established “entertainment district” boundaries set in the city.

This common-consumption area initiative has been studied by Denver Excise & Licenses, business representatives, the Downtown Denver Partnership, neighborhood groups and the public over the last few years, following a 2011 state statute authorizing local jurisdictions to license common consumption of alcohol.

From 2013 to 2016, various concepts of how this might work in Denver were drafted by the city. None of these have advanced to Denver City Council for a vote, though. Meanwhile, other cities in the state have adopted commonconsumption initiatives including Aurora, Central City, Glendale, Greeley and Telluride.

Eric Escuderol, director of communications of Denver Excise and Licenses, said in an email that a “full presentation” of a proposed liquor common-consumption pilot program will soon go before the city council’s Business, Arts, Workforce and Aviation Services committee.

“If approved, the implementation of the license would not be effective until at least early 2020,” said Escuderol.

The initiative would start as a five-year pilot program with no limit on the number of licenses issued, he said. He added that the Dairy

About 12 on-site businesses share a common consumption-area license. This allows patrons to walk with their open containers of alcohol from one business to the next. The area is known as the Westerly Creek Entertainment District and runs along the Stanley property boundary at 2501 Dallas St. “Common consumption has been a great success at Stanley,” said Bryant Palmer, chief storyteller at Stanley. “Our visitors love being able to carry adult beverages throughout the marketplace, particularly while they shop at our

collection of local boutiques.”

The city of Denver has been working toward creating a common-consumption license of its own for a while. In 2017, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock requested that Denver Excise & Licenses renew its work to create a new license category for alcohol common-consumption areas.

In 2018, the concept progressed among meetings with various city departments and through feedback from the public during hearings.

At present, the city continues to work on a draft of the ordinance. As proposed by the city, these common-consumption areas may form as “kiosks or separate rooms in a larger, enclosed space, some may be located in an alleyway shut off to traffic, and some may connect to several freestanding businesses.”

Christine O’Connor, a resident of Denver since 1981,an attorney and one of two co-chairs of Denver Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation (INC), questions the origins of the push by the city for common consumption and wonders if the general public is even aware of the initiative.

“This new license category was not based on requests from neighbors,but based on input from businesses and the liquor industry. I’m concerned people do not know this is happening,” she said. “I am also concerned that the new license category may have unintended consequences for neighborhoods located in proximity to these entertainment districts.”

O’Connor added that INC had several opportunities for input over the past three months and hopes the city has incorporated its suggestions in the new draft. These include limiting the pilot program to two years instead of five, limiting common consumption area ordinances to enclosed spaces, and that evidence of support from those who live in the neighborhood being considered must be submitted during the licensure process. “This is absolutely key,” said O’Connor.

Unlike special events licenses, which are already allowed in Denver, the commonconsumption license allows existing liquorlicensed establishments to sell alcohol that may be consumed outside of the establishment’s licensed premises. Special event licenses are also temporary.
