DEVELOPMENT New office building in Cherry Creek A new office building has been proposed to be built on the corner of Second Avenue and Adams Street in Cherry Creek.

BusinessDen reported the building is proposed to be about 60,000 square-feet, with retail and lobby space on the ground floor, four levels of high-end office space and two levels of underground parking.

The site is 0.29-acres located at 3250 E. Second Ave. Developers hope to have a groundbreaking on the new development by the third quarter of 2020, according to BusinessDen.

BUSINESS OPENINGS Urban Egg The Urban Egg will be opening a location at 3033 E. 1st Ave. in Cherry Creek, BusinessDen reported.

The Cheery Creek location will be the breakfast restaurant chain’s ninth Colorado location.

9+CO Milo, a second apartment complex within the 9+CO development, opened in early February, according to BusinessDen. The 9+CO development is a mixed-use development on 26 acres located at East Ninth Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, which straddles the Congress Park and Hale neighborhoods. The development includes residential, retail and office space.

Theo, the development’s first apartment building opened in May 2018, reported BusinessDen. A few businesses have already opened at 9+CO, and nearly 20 retail tenants have made announcements to open shop there.

BusinessDen reported that according to developers, most of the tenants plan to open their businesses in 2020 and a few in 2021.

CLOSINGS Southern Roots Boutique Southern Roots Boutique, a clothing and accessories store at 2827 E. 3rd Ave. in Cherry Creek, closed in early January, according to the store’s Facebook page.

According to BusinessDen, a “women’s boutique based in Massachusetts is interested in leasing the space,” which is about 1,365 square-feet.

Marmot An outdoors clothing brand has closed its brick-and-mortar location in Cherry Creek after about five years of operating there, according to BusinessDen. Marmot was located at 105 Fillmore St., Suite 107.

There are still Marmot retail stores in Colorado, and the Marmot brand can still be found in other outdoors retail stores.

Quiznos Quiznos, a longtime sandwich shop franchise, may close its first location at 1275 Grant St. in Denver, which has been in operation since 1981, BusinessDen reported.

BusinessDen reported that a spokeswoman for Quiznos said the location had become unsustainable.

The lease expires in April and Quiznos has the option to renew, according to BusinessDen’s reporting.

There are 15 other Quiznos restaurants in the Denver area, and the franchisee who operates the Grant Street location also owns other Denver-area Quiznos shops, according to BusinessDen. Daikon Daikon, a Vietnamese restaurant at

211 E. 7th Ave., has closed after about two years at the location, BusinessDen reported.

The restaurant still has a location Boulder, and is searching for another place to open another Denver location, according to BusinessDen. Max’s Wine Dive Max’s Wine Dive, a restaurant at 696 Sherman St., closed in February, according to BusinessDen. The Denver location was the only one outside of the state of Texas. The company opened in 2006 and came to Denver in April 2015, BusinessDen reported. The Texas locations are still in operation.

CHANGES Del Frisco’s Grille Del Frisco’s Grille in Cherry Creek has unveiled new lunch and dinner menus that include additional steak offerings, surf-and-turf choices and a plant-based burger; as well as lighter lunch fare, sharable plates, mix-and-match options and new side items.

The new menu was inspired by customer feedback, states a news release.

Del Frisco’s Grille is located at 100 St.

A new Montessori preschool has opened in Denver’s Baker neighborhood. Co-founders and teachers Sarah Johnson and Amanda Clarke hosted Echinacea Montessori’s grand opening on Feb. 19 at the school, a converted coffee shop, located at 300 Elati St. The first day of school was March 2. Effort brings music to life for Colorado students Gently used band or orchestra instruments collected for school programs Staff report The annual Bringing Music to Life Instrument Drive kicks off March 2, continuing its mission to bring the gift of music to Colorado students in underfunded music programs.

This is the 10th year for the instrument drive, which has impacted the lives of 15,000 children in hundreds of elementary, middle and high schools in Colorado. To date, more than 5,000 instruments have been awarded with a value exceeding $2 million.

Coloradans are asked to bring their gently used band or orchestra instruments to any of 17 donation stations from March 2-15. Instrument donations may be tax deductible. Drop-off locations can be found at www.bringmusic.org.

Donated instruments are repaired by technicians at the Colorado Institute of Musical Instrument Technology and Boomer Music Company in Fort Collins, and will be donated to music school programs before the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

“Our band program has been able to continuously improve due to the gen-

erosity of Bringing Music to Life,” Ouray School music teacher Michael Scott said in a news release. “We currently are able to offer band to all students in grades 5 and 6, while our high school program also continues to improve.”

At Denver’s North High School, music teacher Katy Lushman has been able to start a Modern Band program and says her students love it.

“This class has given me access to instruments that I’ve never had access to before.

I really enjoy being able to play electric guitar and bass. It’s a new experience,” one of Lushman’s students said.

Another said, “It’s helped me discover my love for music and for playing.”

At Ranum Middle School in Denver, a student’s new instrument “has helped me become more creative … It has opened a door to music.”

Bringing Music to Life was founded in 2013 by executive director Steve Blatt as a project of the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center to continue the instrument drives he had established and managed at Colorado Public Radio.

“Study after study shows the positive impact that learning music has on children,” Blatt said in the news release. “Their listening skills improve, as well as creative

Even more so because “anyone can write them,” said Camille Davis, 17.

Now a junior at East High School, Davis has been writing haikus since the fifth grade.

And as a solution to garner more interest in public art and engage youth in their community, Davis teamed up with her father Greg to implement Bluebird Haiku — a large public art piece along Colfax Avenue beginning near East High School and ending near the Bluebird Theater.

“It’s really exciting, having been conceptualizing this project for so long,” Camille Davis said, “and now seeing it come to life.”

The Bluebird Haiku public art piece will stretch roughly 400 feet along the sidewalk on the north side of Colfax. It will consist of 20 haikus accompanied by a repeating pattern of three bluebirds flying east. The color scheme will be blue, white and black.

Haiku submissions will be accepted until March 21.

Anybody in the community is welcome to submit a haiku, but all submissions should describe, illustrate, characterize and/or portray the essence or history of the Bluebird District.

The Bluebird Business Improvement District consists of nine blocks along Colfax Avenue between Colorado Boulevard and St. Paul Street.

Though that stretch of Colfax has a rich history dating back to at least the mid-1800s, the Bluebird Business Improvement District formed as a taxing district in 2013, said Anne Kuechenmeister, the BID’s executive director.

Results of a 2016 survey revealed that “being a pedestrian on Colfax was a top concern,” Kuechenmeister said. And since, the district has been working toward implementing a variety of projects that will improve the pedestrian experience.

The Bluebird Haiku project is just one of them, Kuechenmeister said. Though it’s a significant one, she added, in the sense that the public art will form a connection between East High School students, residents, businesses and visitors.

“I’m hoping to see all the different ways people have connected with the Bluebird District through the years,” Kuechenmeister said. Plus, she added, “a haiku is just the right amount of reading if you’re walking.”

Bluebird Haiku is being funded in part by a Denver Arts & Venues grant called P.S. You Are Here. The Bluebird Business Improvement District sponsored the father-and-daughter team for the grant.

A team of East High Schoolers will select the haikus for the art installation. Greg and Camille Davis are working with Denver-based Like Minded Productions for the large-sized laser stencils to be used for the project. East High School students will also be doing the painting, which Greg Davis estimates will take place late August.

“There’s so much talent and artistic ability in high schoolers,” Greg Davis said. “Hopefully by them being involved, it will show them how accessible public art can be.”

‘TAKING CARE OF OUR STRAY ANIMALS’

A typical day at Denver Animal Protection starts with checking on the welfare of sick and injured animals, and treating them.

After that, staffers will perform about 20 surgeries each day.

But a recent day brought an emergency surgery to the routine: A kitten had gotten caught on a fence, with a wire wrapped around its foot for a lengthy period of time. The kitten’s owners couldn’t free the animal, so they called Animal Protection officers for help.

The officers were able to remove the kitten from the fence but its leg was badly damaged.

“We did the surgery,” said Dr. Louisa Poon, DAP veterinarian. “The thread was nonviable, and we had to amputate the leg because it had lacked a blood supply for a long time.”

However, she expects the cat to fully recover, then be put up for adoption.

But all other animals needing help are welcome at Denver Animal Protection, which operates the Denver Animal Shelter at 1241 W. Bayaud Ave., south of downtown.

The shelter takes in about 7,000 animals each year and can hold about 450 at a time.

“We are open admission,” said Dr. Louisa Poon, DAP veterinarian. “We’ll take any animal, except for primates.”

And that has included dogs, cats, fish, turtles, pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs and others.

“We only treat strays and shelterowned animals,” Poon said. “Our business model is to provide the best care we can with our resources for homeless and strays.”

Some are victims of cruelty or neglect, she said.

Poon said the only treatment they can’t give is setting broken bones. For that, she reaches out to a community partner.

DAP has about 55 employees. Poon’s staff includes Dr. Beverly Chua, a parttimer; three full-time vet techs and one part-time vet tech.

Under the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment, DAP is a governmental entity, but also relies on donations and grants to help it take proper care of animals, perform lifesaving surgeries and find homes for them.

In 2019, DAP raised about $300,000 in the community.

“We don’t turn away any animals, and it (treating animals) may exceed our city budget,” Poon said, explaining the importance of donations.

DAP recently was accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association, and is one of three municipal shelter clinics in the nation to earn AAHA ac-

creditation.

One of the other shelters is also in Colorado: the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

Unlike hospitals for people, not all animal hospitals and shelters have to be accredited.

The nonprofit AAHA determines criteria — some mandatory, others highly recommended — for vet clinics.

It evaluates entities on about 900 quality standards that go beyond state regulations.

“You have to make sure you comply with their recommendations in order to get the accreditation,” Poon said.

Criteria cover many areas such as anesthesia setups, how to monitor animals, the proper handling of controlled substances, patient care, pain management, medical diagnosis and many more.

DAP made a number of changes in order to meet the criteria, such as getting new equipment, including a full-body X-ray machine that cost $50,000 — raised by donations and grants — and a dental X-ray machine.

It also re-trained staffers, initiated new protocols and took other steps to satisfy the criteria.

“We tried to implement everything recommended,” Poon said. “The AAHA comes out and does an evaluation, onsite, to make sure you’re compliant with their mandatory criteria before you get accredited. It took a little while longer than I wanted, but in the end, we got it done - while maintaining a full load and taking care of our stray animals.”

AAHA is the only organization that accredits vet practices in the United States and Canada. Fewer than 20% are accredited, according to DAP. DAP earned its accreditation on Dec. 30, 2019. Its next application for renewal is scheduled for December 2021 “and if all goes well, then after that, it’s every three years,” Poon said.

Clock ticking on options to control geese population Egg oiling, culling being considered as nesting season nears

T

he best way to manage Denver’s goose population is not by culling, but oiling eggs — in far greater numbers than Denver Parks and Recreation has done in the past, say local goose advocates.

But the clock is ticking.

“The optimal time to oil is between April 1 and April 10,” said Courtney DeWinter, spokesperson for Canada Geese Protection Colorado (CGPC), “which means we have only a few weeks.”

In that time, she hopes to gain the city’s support and mobilize the manpower needed to oil eggs en masse — a labor-intensive process that would extend far beyond public parks to private properties where geese also nest.

To have the needed effect, CGPC believes 10,000 to 12,000 eggs would need to be oiled, which is nearly triple the amount Denver Parks has oiled in the past as part of its own program.

“We are practical problem solvers,” DeWinter said. “This is a financially feasible solution we’re asking the city to deploy instead of killing. It’s an amazing opportunity to make a dent on the population in a humane fashion.”

Condoned by the Humane Society of the United States as “the humane way to limit flock growth and stabilize goose populations,” oiling works by blocking the passage of air through the shell, preventing the embryo from developing. However, timing of the oiling is critical. To do so humanely, the process must be completed before the eggs begin to develop. Eggs can be tested to determine the stage of development by putting them in water. Developing eggs will float and should not be oiled.

Last year’s decision to cull In June and July 2019, Denver Parks partnered with the United States Department of Agriculture to round up about 1,700 geese from four city parks, including Washington and City parks. The geese were killed at a northern Colorado processing plant and their meat was distributed to families in need.

Denver Parks’ website says the decision to cull followed 15 years of goose management tactics — including oiling — that failed to keep the population in check, resulting in “an unnatural number of geese” in the parks, and an amount of goose excrement that degraded the

environment and the park experience.

Denver Parks has a three-year contract with the USDA, but the city said it is still considering its plan for 2020.

Cynthia Karvaski, spokesperson for Denver Parks, said a decision on whether to cull this year will be made after counts of the geese that are still in the parks are conducted sometime in May. Any decision regarding culling will be made prior to molting season, which begins in June or July.

She added the 2019 action was a last resort.

“We were always hoping it wouldn’t come to that, but unfortunately the population is no longer manageable,” Karvaski said. “And while we’ve heard from people that are against it, we are receiving hundreds and hundreds of messages from people saying ‘thank you.’”

Still, the city will continue a multi-pronged approach to the issue, Karvaski said, and this year, will partner with CGPC for the effort.

In 2019, Kavarski said Denver Parks oiled about 3,100 eggs. She estimates at least that many will be oiled this year as well.

But DeWinter said Denver Parks hasn’t oiled enough eggs in the past to put a significant dent in the goose population. Denver Parks estimates its parks are home to about 5,000 resident geese — those born in Denver that live here year-round. A separate population of migratory geese flies to Denver from Canada each fall, but most migrate back to Canada in the spring.

DeWinter argues that because the female goose lays an average of five eggs, the city’s oiling effort is only about one-third of what needs to be done.

Heavy oiling in coastal areas Similar egg oiling programs have been used in communities across the country.

Greenwich, Connecticut, started a goose management program 15 years ago based on egg oiling, hazing and public education. Director of Environmental Affairs Patricia Sesto said the community was motivated to take action because of concerns about bacteria from goose waste on beaches and in the water.

There, geese are hazed with dogs and eggs are oiled on city and private property.

While the dog hazing keeps geese away from specific waterways and properties, Sesto said, “hazing doesn’t manage the population. It just manages those particular geese on a particular property. The oiling changes the population.”

Greenwich’s program also includes educating residents on how to oil the eggs themselves, but residents can also allow the city to do so, Sesto said.

Controlling a goose overpopulation “is not just a municipal solution. It has to be a community solution,” Sesto said. “If you’re only doing it in public parks, you’ll never get a handle on it.”

Despite the success of Greenwich’s nonlethal program, Sesto doesn’t oppose culling if a big population reduction is needed.

“Euthanasia is going to knock the population down, then you can hold that steady with the egg oiling,” Sesto said.

Mayor names director of Denver’s first climate agency Grace Rink to lead Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency Staff report A leader in the sustainability field with nearly two decades of experience working on climate issues will lead Denver’s first climate agency.

Grace Rink was appointed by Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock as executive director of

the new Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency. She will begin her role as chief climate officer on March 16.

“Climate change represents the greatest environmental challenge to our planet, and while leadership at the federal level is lacking, states and cities are moving to take action,” Hancock said in a news release. “Denver is taking a major step forward with this new office and Grace’s leadership. I also want to acknowledge city council president Jolon Clark’s passion for this work, and his efforts to push Denver into the forefront of those cities that are addressing climate strategies at the local level.”

Rink and the new climate agency will work

to engage the community in efforts to reduce the carbon footprint, safeguard historically marginalized communities of color who are disproportionally affected by the health impacts of climate change, power Denver with 100 percent renewable electricity, and ensure environmental justice and equity as Denver transitions to carbon-free energy and transportation systems.

“The need for cities to take a leadership role in addressing climate change has never been more important, because this is where the on-the-ground work is being done and real progress is being made,” Rink said in the release. “Denver has been leading the way

and is taking the steps necessary to shape this work, and I want to thank Mayor Hancock and the Denver climate team for this opportunity to advance those efforts and make some real, positive impacts on communities and in people’s lives.”

enver’s Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation celebrated its 45th anniversary along with its annual awards dinner on Feb. 12.

The nonprofit, volunteer-run organization formed in 1975, and is a Registered Neighborhood Organization consisting of residents and representatives from Denver’s registered neighborhood organizations, city agencies and others.

Beer brewer, weed grower help environment CO2 capture technology reduces overall releases of greenhouse gases

W

hen a craft brewer has carbon dioxide and a marijuana grower needs carbon dioxide, it’s a classic Colorado story with an environmental benefit.

Three small businesses have teamed up to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through a pilot program facilitated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

“This is a classic win-win-win scenario,” said Kaitlin Urso, environmental protection specialist with the CDPHE. “We’re connecting companies that have excess carbon dioxide with companies that need it, and in the process, we’re reusing CO2 that would otherwise be released directly into the environment.”

The small businesses involved are Denver Beer Co., a Denver-based craft brewery; The Clinic, a marijuana dispensary chain located in and around Denver; and Earthly Labs, a Texasbased company that developed a CO2 capture technology specifically for small businesses.

How it works is Denver Beer Co. uses Earthly Labs’ specialized equipment, a plugn-play machine called CiCi, to capture carbon dioxide from the brewery’s fermentation tanks. Once captured, the gas goes through a three-step purifying process and is eventually converted to liquid. It is then transported in special, certified tanks to The Clinic’s cannabis growing facility. There, the tank is hooked up

to the growers’ system and the CO2 is released into the grow room, stimulating plant growth during cultivation.

The pilot program is not funded by the state, Urso said. She added the three businesses chose to partner and invest in the program.

The CDPHE’s role was connecting the three partners to one another, Urso said.

“It’s inspiring to see small businesses taking an investment in solutions … to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions,” Urso said.

Earthly Labs was founded in 2016 with the purpose of making carbon dioxide capture technology affordable to small businesses, said Amy George, founder and CEO. George has a background in the large industrial sector and realized there is a supplyand-demand need for CO2 among small business as well, particlarly craft breweries, George said.

“We are thrilled to help these industry pioneers reduce costs, drive innovation and improve the quality of life in Colorado,” George said of the partnership between Denver Beer Co. and The Clinic.

Earthly Labs’ overall goal, George added, is to avoid 1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions across the nation by 2030.

“This is a real opportunity to keep (a significant amount of) CO2 out of the atmosphere,” George said.

Denver Beer Co. operates a brewery and taproom in Denver’s Highland neighborhood and another in Olde Town Arvada, and will be opening a third brewery and taproom at 2425 S. Downing St., which is on the border of the Rosedale and University neighborhoods, this summer.

Co-owners Patrick Crawford and Charlie Berger also have a Denver Beer Co. production and canning facility called Canworks in

Denver’s Sunnyside neighborhood at 4455 Jason St. The fermentation stage of the beer-brewing process naturally produces carbon dioxide, and Berger estimates that Denver Beer Co. can capture about 150,000 pounds of CO2 per year with Earthly Labs’ technology.

All of the CO2 that is not sent to the cannabis industry will be reused by the brewery, Berger said.

“Something near-and-dear to our hearts as Coloradans is taking care of our environment,” Berger said. For Denver Beer Co., the pilot program is a way to give back to their communities, he said. “Capturing and reusing CO2 is an extension of our efforts to be as sustainable as possible.”

Berger added that Denver Beer Co.’s other sustainability efforts include using 98% locallygrown malted barley and powering Canworks by solar.

The Clinic’s director of operations Brian Cusworth said CO2 is required for plant growth, so another way the pilot program partnership will contribute to reducing The Clinic’s carbon footprint is by eliminating the need to purchase carbon dioxide from power plants and shipping it across the state.

Canworks, where the CO2 will be captured, is only about seven or eight miles away from The Clinic’s cultivation center where the CO2 will be delivered.

The Clinic has four marijuana retail locations across the metro area — Denver’s University Hills, South Park Hill and West Highland neighborhoods; and one location in Wheat Ridge — two Denver-based cultivation centers and a lab.

“We’ve always put innovation as a top priority of ours, right alongside sustainability,” Cusworth said.

Cusworth added he hopes the pilot program will bring awareness to Earthly Labs’ technology for small businesses, and that an industry partnership is an option for any brewery and any legal indoor marijuana cultivation business.

“That’s what it’s really all about,” Cusworth said, “taking larger steps toward responsibility and fighting climate change in the communities that support us.”

The first batch of CO2 was captured from Denver Beer Co. on Jan. 20 and distributed to The Clinic in early February. Testing for quality and various environmentals, specific to the pilot program but taking place concurrently with standard state-mandated testing, will take place for 16 weeks, which is the life cycle of a marijuana plant, Cusworth said.

Both Cusworth and Berger said a partnership between a craft brewery and a marijuana cultivation business, combined with using a small company’s technology, to result in reducing carbon emissions makes sense especially in Colorado. They pointed to the state’s thriving craft brewery culture and the fact that the rest of the nation is looking at Colorado as the pioneers of the legal marijuana industry. This is in addition to Coloradans’ general appreciation for the outdoors, Cusworth and Berger said.

While Earthly Labs’ technology is being used in a small number of craft breweries across the nation, Colorado’s pilot program is the first of its kind to form a partnership between a brewery and cannabis cultivation to help reduce both industries’ carbon footprint.

“This program is a little ahead of its time,” Urso said. She added that assuming all works as it is predicted to, her hope is for the program to expand. “We could really move the needle in helping the state meet its greenhouse gas reduction goals.”

Winter folklore and springtime urban legends

unxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow on Feb. 2, so in modern American folklore, that means we will have an early spring.

However, Punxsutawney Phil lives in Pennsylvania. And as a Coloradan, I questioned his accuracy and turned to Flatiron Freddy for a closerto-home prediction. The City of Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks posted on its Facebook page on Feb. 2 that this marmot did see his shadow, thus predicting six more weeks of winter.

So which do we believe — the groundhog in Pennsylvania that has been seeking out his shadow each Groundhog’s Day for 124 years, or the local groundhog, which is likely more in tune to our unique, unpredictable Colorado weather.

Most Coloradans will tell you that March is our snowiest month. Afterall, it was March 14 last year when we experienced the bomb cyclone and about 7 inches of snow fell in Denver during a 24-hour period. Those who have lived in Colorado for a while will remember the March 2003 blizzard when more than two feet of snow — 31.8 inches according to Weather5280.com — fell in Denver between March 17-19. And 20 years prior, on March 5-6, a storm brought 18.7 inches of snow to the city.

rom gentrification to homelessness, to the rent generally being too high, all of our housing woes can be traced back to one core failure: our economic system treats the roof over your head as a commodity to be bought and sold instead of a basic necessity for survival.

So how bad is Denver’s housing crisis, exactly? What are the details of our city’s plan to deal with it? Is it enough?

My office has reviewed hundreds of pages of city documents and reports to track down some answers.

Denver’s snowiest month, averaging just less than a foot of snowfall throughout the month.

But on the other hand, we Coloradans boast 300 days of sunshine. Surely at least some of the 31 days in March contribute to that, considering the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere happens sometime between March 19-21 each year.

Still, some say that Colorado’s 300 days of sunshine is an urban legend among locals, noting the the statement’s inacurracy stems from the fact that some of those days only see a couple hours of full sun.

No matter that it’s not scientifically proven, I will continue to brag on this state’s amount of sunshine.

There’s nothing like waking up to the sun shining through my window following a prior day’s snowstorm. On those days, that fresh blanket of snow seems to make the sun shine that much brighter.

And it’s fun to see people getting out to enjoy the sunny day — carefully avoiding slush puddles during a jog in the park or using a winter coat as a seat cover to lunch on a venue’s outdoor patio.

But there is also something to be said about the sense of togetherness that accompanies a snowstorm. I believe the “we’re all in this together” mentality is inherently in every Coloradan during snowstorms. It’s not uncommon for coworkers who

own four-wheel drive vehicles to offer their colleagues a carpool to work, or to see an able-bodied teen spend afterschool hours shoveling snow for his or her senior-aged neighbors.

I even got to help two people while out-and-about covering stories in February. The first was providing a jump to a person whose car had a dead battery, a common wintertime nuisance.

Back in November, my dad gave me a box of sand to store in my car after I got stuck visiting with my family in Bailey. I’ve been driving around with it ever since, which brings me to the second time I was able to lend a hand.

A woman was blocking traffic on a small side street — her tires spinning out, stuck on a sheet of ice — while a man, presumably a stranger to her, was pushing her vehicle from behind with all his might. Since I was already stopped and watching all this happen, I got out of my car and offered them some sand. The man scooped a handful of it, methodically spread it around the tires of the woman’s car and with one final push, moments later, she was on her way, profusely thanking us and waving as she drove off.

The oil and gas wars continue

I

want to start my column this month by calling out Democratic Sen. Angela Williams from District 33 in Denver, who joined with two Republicans on the Local Government Committee to kill a bill that would have lifted the preemption on local control ENVIRONMENT of plastics. This bill would have allowed Denver to pass legislation to WITH EAN improve water quality and reduce waste. As a reminder, Denver has already passed a fee in an attempt to curb consumption, but could not ban due to the preemption by the state.

Those who work in environmental policy were left in shock by this vote.

Plastics in fact are the new frontier for the oil and gas industry. With declining revenues and shifts to electrification, these companies see the Ean Thomas Tafoya expansion of the plastics market as a way to hedge their bets by expanding the plastics market. But many organizations and leaders see the “writing on the wall” and are seeking to rein in plastic consumption. In February, The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act was introduced in the U.S. Senate, in attempt to move away from single use, and towards restricting the growth of the sector and improving recycling rates and methods. So why would Williams kill this bill?

According to an analysis by 350 Colorado, the Colorado Public Employees Retirement Association, aka PERA, has more than $1.5 billion of its holdings invested into more than 300 fossil fuel companies. One such company

is Extraction LLC, the notorious company that drilled and is operating a well across the street from the Bella Romero school in Greeley. This has spurred statewide initiatives from residents and Colorado Rising, an anti-fracking group, as well as the arrest of 38 activists — nicknamed the Capitol 38 — at the State of the State address in January.

Last year, Denver began divesting $180 million from its pension fund. In March, there will be a similar bill moving through the Colorado legislature and I encourage you to support it. Continuing to fund the climate crisis while passing policy to shift energy isn’t a wise investment of these PERA funds.

Speaking of state budgets and revenues, the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission was audited — a report stated a majority of the industry was not in compliance with monthly reporting and paying required severance tax. According to a 2016-18 analysis of the report by the Denver Post, of the 420 operators actively producing oil and gas, 316 turned in 1,209 required, monthly well reports incomplete, and/or failed to submit as many as 50,055 well reports. In fact, it was found that the lost revenue and fines summed up to $308 million. So the next time the industry touts tax revenue to the state, let’s remember their lack of compliance.

Here in Denver, there are two efforts afoot to restrict fossil fuel extraction. The first is from Councilwoman Amanda Sawyer, which seeks voter approval before any of the more than 60 wells at DIA are reopened or more are drilled. The second is an effort by Resilient Denver, a resident group for which, in disclosure, I serve as the spokesperson. Resilient Denver has filed for a charter

Spring seed sowing can start indoors soon

S

pring is still a while away, but the time to start seeds indoors for your vegetable, annual and perennial gardens is very soon.

Starting your own plants from seed can GUEST be highly rewarding COLUMN since you get to see Andrew Habig the entire life of the plant from germination to flowering and fruiting. Growing from seed also opens a greater world of diversity of shapes, colors and flavors that aren’t available as plants in spring.

Many of the commonly grown vegetable and annual bedding plants are easily grown from seed. Everything you’ll need to be successful can be found at your local, independent garden center. Here are just a few pointers that will help you be successful with your first attempts at starting seeds.

Use a peat-based soil mix that is labeled for seed starting. Garden soil is too heavy and won’t dry down enough to keep seeds from dying from dampening off, which is caused by fungi when seedlings are kept wet for too long.

Seedlings need lots of light. Unless you have a greenhouse or a window that gets a few hours of direct sun each day, you’ll likely need to give your seedlings supplemental light. It’s easier and cheaper than ever to get good grow lights for seed starting. Full spectrum LED bulbs that fit into a standard socket can be found at your local hardware store or garden

center. The LED bulbs are nice because they don’t put off the heat of an incandescent bulb.

Position the bulbs within six inches of the seedlings.

It’s also important to not start seeds too early. You don’t want your plants languishing and overgrowing your indoor space while it’s still frosty outside. Follow the timing information provided on your seed packet. If no information is provided, there are many online resources.

Also follow the instructions on the seed packet for depth of sowing. Different plants have different needs — some need to be fully buried and some need to be surface sown.

Gently water, being especially careful if seeds are surface sown so you don’t wash them away.

Keep the soil at a high moisture level until they germinate. After germination, let the soil dry out slightly between watering. Watering too often will cause dampening off which kills seedlings. Touch the surface of the soil daily to see if watering is needed. If the soil feels wet, don’t water. If it feels lightly moist to almost dry, it’s time to water. Don’t let the soil get fully dry or the seedling will wilt and die. A small fan near the seeding area can help if you’re having trouble with dampening off. If your new seedlings die, don’t fret. Try again with fresh soil and clean containers, knowing that failure is the root of learning!

$2.24 billion in 2020. This budget allocates just $27 million, 1.22%, for homelessness and $44 million, 1.97%, for affordable housing. We’ll spend $435 million — six times as much — on the police and sheriff ’s departments in 2020. This issue is nothing new either. Denver has created and/or preserved just 23,885 affordable units since 1890 with the vast majority coming in 2002 or later.

Housing is a basic need that should be guaranteed for all. Some of the policy reforms in Housing an Inclusive Denver are good ideas that we’d like to see implemented as soon as possible. However, the core issue remains — there are simply no affordable units available for the tens of thousands of Denverites who need them.

We’ve waited decades for private developers to provide solutions, placing wildly unrealistic expectations on for-profit actors whose primary goal is to make money, not provide affordable housing for all who need it. Depending on for-profit developers to meet the high demand for affordable units

isn’t working. Instead, Denver needs a new approach to our housing crisis, including homelessness.

This is what the path to Housing for All can look like: Large, mixed-income housing developments that operate as public enterprises. A municipal bank to help finance affordable housing developments and affordable home loans. A housingfirst approach to public safety, with more street-level services like public trash cans, restrooms and pathways to permanent housing. A tenant’s bill of rights to ensure renters are protected from unsafe conditions, eviction and displacement.

As a Democratic Socialist, I believe that the only path to a Denver that truly works for all is to put the power of city planning, budgeting/spending and decision-making into the hands of our residents, where it belongs. Together, we’re going to build a city that works for the many, not the few.

Inside this article, I’m going to share with you 4 of the top mistakes people make when it comes to overcoming knee pain in hopes to avoid another painful lesson and guide you if you are suffering with knee pain now.

4 Mistakes That Actually Make Knee Pain Worse 1. Rest - Surely, if you fall or have a traumatic event, the idea of rest for your knee should be used in the short term. But, what happens when you continue to rest your knee and the pain doesn’t improve? You guessed it! Your knee becomes weaker (lack of use) and more stiff or sore. So, if your knee pain doesn’t improve after a short period of time, an extended period of rest will definitely make your knee pain worse in the long run.

2. Medications - Similar to rest, taking pain pills, like anti-inflammatories and painkillers, might help for a short time following a knee injury. However, here’s what happens over time: the pills will mask your pain and you never really uncover the ROOT CAUSE of your pain. Treating the wrong cause for your knee pain will let pain go on for longer

than anyone would like.

3. Knee Braces - I have no problem with people wearing a brace from time to time, especially if you want a little support during a more active day.

However, if you are someone RELYING on a brace on a regular basis, you are missing something. Braces take over the actual job of muscles - providing stability. Until you figure out WHY your knee is feeling the need for a brace and you DO something about it, the feeling of instability isn’t likely going to improve and may get worse.

4. The Wrong Exercises - Doing many exercises that are from a book or a generic program given to you without a specific purpose is well-meaning advice, but will not get the results you want. Many people plateau and feel stuck seeing no improvements or feel worse with this type of program. That’s because they are not specific to your knee pain. They are a good starting point, but that’s about it. Rezone for CHUN’s ‘historical treasure’ mansion underway Cheesman Park area could see cafe at historic site

I

t has been a long journey for the Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods organization to figure out what to do with what it refers to as its historical treasure — the TearsMcFarlane mansion.

Now, “with the right players in place,” said CHUN’s board president Travis Leiker, “it has got so much potential.”

The Tears-McFarlane mansion, 1290 Williams St., is a CHUN-owned property just north of Cheesman Park. The Colonial Revival style mansion was built in 1899 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

The mansion was gifted to CHUN in 2005, and the organization took full ownership of it in 2015. A year later, CHUN faced financial challenges and selling the mansion was brought up as a relief to the struggles.

However, in the summer of 2016, CHUN’s board of directors voted to keep the mansion.

The main reason being that the voting bodies felt it was — and is — a community asset.

“There are a lot of people, who have nothing to do with (CHUN’s) board, who really feel a sense of ownership of this building,” said CHUN board member Megan Whelan.

She pointed to the people who have enjoyed CHUN’s past educational and communityoriented programs that have taken place at the mansion. “If CHUN had sold this building, that’s over. It’d be a private building that’s not a community resource.”

To continue providing the mansion and its annex building as a community resource, CHUN realized a source of revenue would be required and a rezone of the property would be needed to accomplish that.

Currently zoned for high-density residential uses, CHUN wanted to scale that back, Leiker said.

The application, which was filed on Jan. 2, is for a Planned Unit Development — which allows for customized, site-specific development — with general urban neighborhood standards. It also requests to create two subareas so development standards can be addressed separately for the house, which is roughly 8,700 square feet, and the adjacent Hedlund Hall, better known as the mansion’s annex building, which is about 1,500 square feet.

GeesePeace national program director David Feld, a retired engineer from Virginia, co-founded the program in 1999 because of a conflict concerning geese in his community.

CHUN plans on keeping its headquarters there, leasing office space to small businesses and nonprofits, and the mansion will continue to be available for small public events and meetings, as well as CHUN programming.

Though the mansion is in need of some costly renovations, the major change will be to the hall, which was built by the city of Denver in the early 1980s to serve as an event center.

Unlike the mansion, it does not have historic designation.

It wasn’t well-constructed in the first place, Leiker said, and is currently in poor condition.

“If we are able to salvage portions of the current building, we will. But we don’t think (that) will be the case,” Leiker said. “In all likelihood, it will be torn down and replaced with a new structure.”

However, a new structure wouldn’t drastically change the footprint of what’s already there, Leiker said. And it will be much more “visually pleasing from multiple vantage points,” Leiker added. Any rebuild will be done within the property lines — meaning the patio would no longer encroach onto the city’s Cheesman Park property as it does now. The

That’s done with dogs on shore and in boats on the water, stationed during a specific time period.

Feld said the program is low cost and effective, in large part because it taps into a Canada goose’s inbred desire to fly north — an instinct Feld said is present even in nonmigratory resident geese like those found in Denver.

If geese find the environment undesirable, they’ll go elsewhere, Feld said.

“It always works,” he said. “They either fly north or fly to other water bodies.”

Geese won’t leave an area,

proposed revitalization also includes grounds work and an overall improved public space.

Proposed new development plans include opening a small café with a full coffee shop.

The café will serve breakfast snacks and juices; grab-and-go salads, fresh deli sandwiches and desserts; and beer and wine.

Partnering 50-50 with CHUN on the proposed project is City Street Investors LLC, a Denver-based real estate investment company.

CHUN will sell 50% of the property equity to City Street, and retain a 50% interest.

Proceeds of the sale will go toward an endowment for CHUN services.

City Street will finance the revitalization costs, which as of February was estimated at north of $3 million for the project, said Pat McHenry, principal with City Street. That includes about $250,000 of deferred maintenance projects and about $1.5 million for renovations.

Although the application is underway in the rezone process with the city, it could still be several months before the city makes any decisions.

Bruce O’Donnell, who is serving as CHUN’s rezoning consultant, added the city will entertain two public hearings on the rezone application. The first will be in front of the Denver Planning Board, which will make

Culling a common practice Washington Park resident Steve Spirn, who represents Citizens to Restore the Parks, said his group supports any method that will keep Denver parks free of goose waste.

He and his neighbors helped create the citizen group in 2016, garnering support from 1,500 people who signed a petition to

a recommendation to city council on the rezone application. The second public hearing will be in front of Denver’s city council, which will make the deciding vote on the rezone application.

It’s likely both public hearings are still six to eight months in the future, O’Donnell said.

CHUN and City Street Investors say sufficient public outreach was done prior to proposing any plans for the rezone application.

Between 2017 and 2019, focus group meetings took place and park-users were surveyed.

Still, some neighbors — people representing the nearby condominium communities of Park Towers, Highgate and One Cheesman Place, all within a couple blocks of the TearsMcFarlane mansion and Cheesman Park — feel the project plans for the rezone request were not properly communicated.

“We had to reach out to CHUN to find out what they were doing. We were kept in the dark,” said Jay Rust, a resident of Park Towers.

“People in our building were surprised to hear about these plans. And they were not in support.”

A prime concern is the commercialization of Cheesman Park.

With commercialization comes additional noise, the neighbors said, specifically from beeping delivery and garbage trucks that will have to service a café more frequently than any of the current uses at the mansion.

They also voiced concerns about odor — industrial venting and possibly food trucks — and parking in an area where it’s already limited. CHUN, however, expects the café won’t be a destination spot for people across the city, but rather an amenity for Cheesman Park visitors and the immediate neighborhood, who may largely visit it on foot or bike.

The neighbors’ concerns are in addition to their argument that the neighborhood is already well-served with other nearby bar and restaurant establishments.

It may be a great way for CHUN to generate revenue, said Robert Fox, Highgate condos’ manager. “But we just don’t think it’s suitable for this area.”

Along with that, the neighbors question the viability of the proposed café’s revenue stream.

“CHUN’s expertise is in community relations. A commercial enterprise has come in, and made promises to them to form a joint venture, 50/50,” said Tim Haddon, president of One Cheesman Place’s HOA. “From the information we’ve been given, it doesn’t appear that it’s viable. (And) until we can see the numbers and they can prove it to us, I just don’t see it.”

Spirn added that Citizens to Restore the Parks encouraged city council and the parks department to take nonlethal action, but was content with Denver Parks’ decision to cull.

“You move to Colorado and Denver for nature, and animals are part of nature,” Spirn said. “The difference is this — the nonlethal doesn’t work. Our position was and is the last step may have to be lethal.”

He said the group felt the over-

population of geese in parks got to the point that culling was necessary, which in turn, likely reduced some of the health and safety issues.

“We don’t have enough expertise to know what else they could have done short of culling,” Spirn said.

“We’d be most happy if nonlethal would work. If there are other methods to be tried, we’re in favor.

But we’re also realistic.”

Denver Parks’ Karvaski said culling is a commonly used technique, often implemented with no public input or objection.

“We have, for years, taken community input regarding the situation,” Karvaski said. “But we’ve been tasked with the management of wildlife in the city. We make the best decision we can based on that responsibility.”

Shiki Dreams offers escape from world Immersive exhibit open until May

Shiki Dreams is meant to be a respite from the everyday world.

Shiki Dreams is a pop-up immersive art installation located at 2219 E. 21st Ave., which is in the northeast vicinity of Denver’s City Park West neighborhood.

The 1,200-square-foot art exhibit creates an imaginative step into the world of Shiki, the spiritual yeti guide and leader of the Spirits of the Forest from Natura. It explores the dreams of this wise spirit in a multi-sensory experience.

“We’re thrilled to provide an opportunity for the public to continue its journey alongside Shiki through this one-of-a-kind

pop-up experience in our studio space,” said Eric Jaenike, co-founder of Prismajic, the creative group presenting the exhibit.

“Visitors are invited to explore a journey of magic and discovery in an interactive exhibit incorporating augmented reality and digital technologies.”

Each room in the exhibit represents a different dream sequence, featuring a variety of art mediums created by more than 20 Colorado artists.

Shiki Dreams, which opened Feb. 25, is a continuation of Prismajic’s Natura Obscura, a 2019 art installation put on in collaboration with Englewood’s Museum of Outdoor Arts.

Natura is an entire world, said Jennifer Mosquera, chief creative officer for Prismajic.

“It’s always been our plan to continue our narratives,” Mosquera said, adding the exploration of Shiki is just one story inside Natura.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade coming to Denver First responders, police, firefighters to be honored in traditional event Staff report Celebrate the luck of the Irish and honor police officers, firefighters and first responders at the 58th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Denver.

The 2020 parade charity is Shield616, which was founded to provide armor to protect peace officers and first responders from rifle fire.

Dorenkamp, a Colorado native, grew up

in Southeastern Colorado on her family ranch. She won the title of Miss Colorado USA in 2019.

Some Democrats fear fallout from Sanders atop ticket Members of Congress worry that blue gains could see setback

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ robust start in the race for the presidential nomination is triggering alarm among congressional Democrats, with many warning that a ticket headed by the self-declared socialist could be devastating to the party’s chances of winning the Senate and holding the House in November.

In anxious huddles around the Capitol, apprehensive Democrats are sharing their worries that Sanders’ socialist label and unyielding embrace of controversial proposals like “Medicare for All” and the Green New Deal will repel voters in the affluent, moderate districts that flipped House control in 2018 and in closely divided states where Republican senators are vulnerable.

The Vermont independent narrowly won New Hampshire on Feb. 11 on the heels of a strong showing in Iowa and is widely seen as a front-runner, along with former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

“I’m a proud capitalist,” said freshman Rep. Ben McAdams, D-Utah, in pointed contrast with Sanders.

McAdams, who is supporting former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and whose Salt Lake City district will be among the

toughest for Democrats to defend, said having a liberal like Sanders atop his party’s ticket “would probably give me more opportunities to show my independence” from the party.

Another freshman from a competitive district, Rep. Tom Malinowski, D-New Jersey, said Democrats need a presidential nominee who “doesn’t scare all those future former Republicans more than Trump scares them.” And while acknowledging that Republicans plan to tar all Democrats with the socialist label, “There’s one candidate for whom that would not be a lie.”

Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nevada, who backs the candidacy of former Vice President Joe Biden, warned a group of Democratic voters this week in Carson City, Nevada, that with Sanders atop the ticket, “you’re not going to take back the Senate. There’s not any way, because everybody’s going to be tarred with the same brush.

We will probably lose seats in the House.”

Private conversation cuts to chase In private conversations, other Democrats are more succinct. One House Democrat said colleagues from swing districts are scared by the prospects of a Sanders nomination, while another said moderates are increasingly concerned that a Sanders candidacy would devastate their prospects for winning the White House and retaining the House. The lawmakers insisted on anonymity to describe private conversations.

Rep. Tom Cole, R-Oklahoma, a former leader of the House GOP’s campaign committee, said of a possible Sanders nomination.

Republicans face an uphill fight in capturing control of the House, which Democrats lead 232-197, with one independent and five vacancies. The GOP controls the Senate 5347 and is favored to retain its majority.

Biden supporters are happy to use apprehension about Sanders’ impact on the party’s strength in Congress as a tool for drumming up support.

Rep. Ami Bera, D-Calif., who’s endorsed Biden, said if Sanders were nominated, Democrats from moderate districts “might actually have to run away from our nominee to get elected.” And he added, “It’s highly unlikely that Bernie Sanders will moderate his views, either.”

Congressional Democrats have little to gain by openly disparaging the man who could well be their presidential nominee, and they say they’re uncertain what they could do that would be effective. Any move to derail his candidacy that could be traced back to them would undoubtedly enrage Sanders and his impassioned supporters and risk the fury that split the party in 2016, when some Sanders backers never supported Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee.

Underscoring a reluctance to speak critically of Sanders, Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Illinois, chairwoman of House Democrats’ campaign arm, sidestepped questions about how his nomination would affect her candidates’ prospects. “We have a long way to go before we know who our nominee is,” she said.

Asked how many nervous lawmakers have

expressed their worries about Sanders to her, Bustos paused for four seconds before answering, “We have discussions about the nominee but, you know, it runs the gamut.”

While many Democrats are reluctant to openly express dismay about Sanders, members of the House have spoken with their feet.

According to the website fivethirtyeight. com, Sanders has endorsements from only seven House members, all members of the progressive caucus from safely Democratic districts. Biden, in contrast, has backing from 41 House members, and has made a point of touting support from seven lawmakers from swing districts. Bloomberg, who hopes to poach Biden’s position as the moderate alternative to Sanders, has racked up 11 endorsements from House lawmakers, five of whom occupy swing seats.

Progressives dispute concerns Progressives argue the fears are overblown.

Republicans tried to tie Democrats to socialism and liberal causes like Medicare for All during the 2018 campaign, they note, yet Democrats won a resounding majority in the House. And they argue that nominating Sanders could change the electorate in ways that help the party.

“They don’t want somebody that sells out,” said Sanders backer Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Michigan, a member of the “squad” of young liberal freshmen. She added, “Please don’t talk about only persuading Trumpers and independents” to be open to an alternative candidate. “How about persuading the Democrats that haven’t been engaged?”

“The single most important thing for Democrats to take back the Senate is turnout,” said Mike Lux, a liberal strategist who supports Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren in the presidential race. “We have to have a highly energized Democratic base turnout,

a lot of young people coming out, voting not just in the presidential race but further down the ballot.”

Yet Sanders’ agenda is far from shared. Several top-tier Democratic Senate recruits, such as former astronaut Mark Kelly in Arizona, former state Sen. Cal Cunningham in North Carolina and former Gov. John Hickenlooper in Colorado, have explicitly distanced themselves from core Sanders positions like Medicare for All. Hickenlooper, the likely Democratic nominee against Republican Sen. Cory Gardner, targeted Sanders during his own brief bid for the party’s presidential nomination last year.

At a Democratic debate last summer, Hickenlooper warned that Sanders’ program would be “a disaster” at the ballot box.

“If you force Americans to make these radical changes,” Hickenlooper said, “they’re not going to go along.”

Gardner, widely considered the most endangered Republican senator, has been openly pining for Sanders to be the nominee. “In 2018, Cory said `the most dangerous thing to happen in America in the 2016 presidential election was Bernie Sanders’ normalization of socialism,’” Gardner campaign spokesman Jerrod Dobkin said. “Two years later, Cory’s been proven right.”

Democrats skeptical of Sanders stressed that the nominating process has just begun.

Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama, who is considered the most endangered Democratic Senate incumbent this year, has endorsed Biden, a longtime friend. He said he wouldn’t play “what-if games” about the top of the ticket and how it might affect his chances in deep-red Alabama.

“I still think that Biden is going to be the nominee,” Jones said. “I still think that moderate voice that’s out there is going to ultimately carry.”

Study shows only half of the U.S. is recreating outside 1 billion fewer outings in 2018 than 10 years ago

A new study reports that half of the U.S. population participated in outdoor recreation at least once in 2018.

“When you first see this number it seems really impressive,” said Lise Aangeenbrug, executive director of the Outdoor Foundation. “Fifty percent of Americans report that they get outside. That’s a large number.

That’s a lot of people.”

But Aangeenbrug said what that really means is that 50% say they don’t go outside even once per year.

“They don’t hike with their family,” she said. “They don’t go for a run on a neighborhood trail. They’re not getting out with their kids on a bike.

They’re not going to the ski slopes.”

The 2019 Outdoor Participation Report released by Outdoor Foundation, the charitable arm of the Outdoor Industry Foundation, surveyed 20,000 adults and children throughout the country to determine what factors contribute to their time spent outdoors.

Overall outdoor outings declined by an average of 7.4 outings per participant over the past year.

One aspect of the study Aangeenbrug was particularly concerned about was the decline of kids getting outside. In 2018, kids reported 15% fewer outings than in 2012.

“This is particularly disturbing for the future because we also know that adults are two to three times more likely to go outside if they were taken outside as children,”

Aangeenbrug said.

While the overall picture for outdoor participation was not promising, there were some bright spots.

Female participation rates increased by an average of 3.2%.

Hispanic participation growth was the strongest among ethnic groups over the past year. And from 20172018, there were participation surges in some individual activities, such as BMX biking and sailing.

When it comes to proximity, the study found that 63% of the people who recreate outside do so within 10 miles of their home. Youth outdoor

participants under age 18 preferred to recreate less than one mile from their homes.

Aangeenbrug said that reinforces the notion that when it comes to getting people outside, “it needs to be easy to get to, safe to get to, welcoming and close to home.”

During the Outdoor Retailer Snow Show that took place in Denver in January, a panel discussed the findings of the study and the need for a movement to get Americans outside.

“The report confirms what a lot of us know already, which is that most

Americans aren’t getting outside regularly and an enormous number aren’t getting outside at all,” said Aaron Reuben, researcher at Duke University and moderator of the panel. “So as a researcher, I think about that from a public heath lens.

We know our population is aging, it’s urbanizing. We’re seeing greater rates of diabetes and obesity and mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.”

The most popular outdoor activities among participants was running, jogging and trail running with 19.2% choosing these activities. Following that was freshwater, saltwater and fly fishing at number two; and road biking, mountain biking and BMX at number three. The top five activities were rounded out by hiking; then car, backyard, backpacking and RV camping.

“I think we have to be careful as an industry to not tell people they’re doing it wrong,” said Ben Steele, executive vice president and chief customer officer at REI, who served as one of the three panelists.

“At REI we get that wrong a lot,” Steele said. “I run every morning.

That’s my favorite thing to do. To REI historically, I’m doing it wrong. That’s not time outdoors because I’m not on a trail.”

Steele said it’s OK to start small.

And that realistically, all they’re asking people —especially kids — to do is to go have fun outside.
