Expansion begins at Center for the Arts Evergreen
This fall a woman walked into the gallery at Center for the Arts Evergreen (CAE). She brought her own stool because sitting during the long car ride from Highlands Ranch to CAE bothered her back. She wrapped herself in a blanket because she’s “always cold.” The woman sat quietly in front of an acrylic painting filled with movement—tall grasses blowing in the wind and wildflowers dotting the fields. Tears filled her eyes and she spoke in a whisper. “This reminds me of the summer I met my husband. My childhood in the Midwest.” Other residents from her assisted living facility joined her in the gallery, and she eagerly drew them to the painting, a painting that brought to life her days as a young newlywed. Soon, they were all sharing their stories. Later that afternoon, a group from Vertical Skills

OF THE MONTH Academy, a charter school in Evergreen supporting the needs of dyslexic children, visited CAE. When asked about his favorite artwork, one student pointed to a sculpture of a crumpled woman with her head in her hands. “This one makes me feel sad.” As the middle schoolers created artwork inspired by what they’d seen in the gallery, the boy painted a figure. The boy’s figure, in the same pose as the sculpture, had its face raised. She was smiling and surrounded by children reaching out to her. “In my painting she’s happy because her friends are helping her.”
Every day, Center for the Arts Evergreen staff and visitors are reminded of the power of art in building community and uniting us. Art brings us together physically—at gallery exhibitions, at concerts, and at classes and workshops. It also brings us together culturally—telling our community’s shared stories and inspiring us to think about others, create connections, and engage in a meaningful life. Thanks to the generous support of the greater mountain community, CAE is in the midst of an exciting (and long-awaited) expansion. What does this mean for our community? Bake for 25 minutes, or until bubbling at the edges and the topping is golden. Lentil Shepard’s Pie with an Amy’s Kitchen Twist Shepherd’s pie is a classic holiday favorite, and this redesigned modern version is vegan and gluten free. Ingredients: • 1 can Amy’s Organic Lentil
Vegetable Soup • 2 cups sprouted lentils, cooked • 3 medium Yukon gold potatoes, cooked with skin on • 1/2 cup almond milk • 2 teaspoons vegan butter • 1/2 cup leeks, shaved • 1/2 cup Brussels sprouts, shaved • 2 tablespoons olive oil • Salt and pepper, to taste Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Warm one can of Amy’s Organic Lentil Vegetable Soup with sprouted lentils in a saucepan over medium heat for 8-10 minutes. In a separate pan, mash potatoes with almond milk and vegan butter, seasoning with salt and pepper.

Creativity, Coffee & Conversation: New in 2024, CAE is creating a monthly opportunity for area seniors to gather and connect, first assembling in the gallery for a tour of the current exhibition, then enjoying time creating and conversing with new friends over coffee.
Nonprofit Meeting Space: The creation of new staff offices has freed up space for an additional community room. Nonprofits from throughout the area can partner with CAE to use the new classroom for monthly board meetings, staff retreats, and more. Sculpture Program: CAE and Sculpture Evergreen merged in January of 2023, and CAE proudly continues the legacy of public art in Evergreen. The permanent collection of public art and sculpture in Evergreen has grown to more than 50 pieces, and welcomes 8-12 additional temporary pieces to Evergreen every summer. Exhibitions: CAE will host 10 new exhibitions in its gallery in 2024. You’ll see exhibitions filled with art by creators from across the country interspersed with pop-ups by local favorites.
