Pediatric nurse joins race for city council

MY NAME IS

Teaching pain relief techniques for more than 20 years Finding what worked I had several years of chronic pain in my 20s. My shoulder got so bad that I avoided using it. I learned to write left-handed. I quit playing guitar. It was seriously debilitating.

I went through a bunch of treatments: physical therapy, sports medicine, chiropractic, acupuncture — and none of them worked. Then I met a guy named Sean McCarver, who taught me a system that created what he called muscle balance.

Potter I was so impressed with how effective it was that I apprenticed with him for a couple years. Now, I’ve been teaching it myself for more than 20 years.

Balance the body I call it Jiffy Body. The core concept is that muscle balance part. If you were going to drive a car on a race track, you’d align and balance the tires first. In the same way, you want to create muscle balance in your living machinery.

You don’t need any workout machines or weights or anything. You can do it in your pajamas.

I spent three years compiling the

system into a book. It was a painstaking process, but I wanted to make sure anyone can understand it.

Lately I’m focusing on teaching the system to as many people as possible — I even teach it for free out of my house every Saturday.

Escape the pain The more persistent your joint or muscle problem is, the more you need to work with someone like me.

It’s also really beneficial for people who sit at a desk 40 hours a week.

We’re not designed to spend that much time hunched over.

My wife is a real estate appraiser.

She spends so much time sitting, that she has problems with nerve impingement. We practice Jiffy Body together, though, and she stays pain-free.

My daughter is 14, so she’s not quite as motivated to follow the system. Aches, pains and swelling are the main motivators for people.

I’ve lived through that pain, and I get a real thrill from helping people get out.

Kelly Milliman, 53, hopes to focus on open space, business community

Pediatric nurse Kelly Milliman announced her candidacy for the District 4 seat on city council this fall.

Milliman, 53, has worked as a pediatric nurse at Children’s Hospital since 2007. She holds a marketing degree from Louisiana State University, and a nursing degree from Arapahoe Community College.

Milliman and her family moved to Littleton in 2001. She and her husband have two children, both of whom graduated from Heritage High Milliman School and now attend college in California.

Milliman said she first took an interest in city council in the 2000s, amid a controversy over whether to build a Walmart on the Ensor property, a large tract of undeveloped land along Santa Fe Drive.

“I saw the energy and passion of citizens,” Milliman said. “I thought, this is a cool city. People are concerned for its future.”

Milliman is a 2018 graduate of the Littleton Leadership Academy, a civic

affairs education program led by former mayor Susan Thornton. Two other academy graduates, Karina Elrod and Kyle Schlachter, were elected to city council in 2017.

If elected, Milliman said she hopes to focus on preserving and enhancing open space.

“Anything that helps nurture the souls of our citizens,” Milliman said.

“We can’t all go float down a river for days, but we can tube the South Platte River or take a bike ride on the High Line Canal. We’re blessed to have those amenities, and I want to make sure they stay the best.”

Milliman also said she hopes to work closely with Littleton’s business community.

Milliman said she hopes to better understand the needs of District 4, which covers Littleton’s southwest quadrant, and includes the Ensor property, where a pair of development groups plan to build sprawling residential and commercial projects.

“I can’t put my finger on any one particular issue in District 4, but I want to hear residents’ concerns,” Milliman said. “Anything that’s done will impact all of the districts. Traffic would be one issue, as would redevelopment of existing infrastructure.”

Milliman will face off against Next Generation Advisory Committee chairperson Iftin Abshir for the District 4 seat. The seat is currently held by Mayor Debbie Brinkman, who is term-limited.

A total of four seats are up for grabs on city council this fall.

Four vie for two seats on Littleton school board

Four candidates are running for the two seats up for grabs this fall on Littleton Public Schools’ five-member Board of Education.

Board secretary Robert Reichardt will seek a second four-year term, while Jim Stephens, the board’s assistant secretary, will not seek reelection as his family has plans to relocate.

Election day is Nov. 5.

While the candidates have different perspectives on the district, they all

Here’s a look at all four: Robert Reichardt Reichardt, who is seeking reelec-

tion, is the father of two teenage girls: one at Littleton High School and another at Heritage High School.

Reichardt was raised in Colorado Springs and went to college at the McCrary University of Colorado at Boulder. He works as an education policy researcher.

“Being on the board is a way to use my knowledge and skills to support the community,” Reichardt said. “It’s

been a real joy.”

Summer gives way to fall in downtown Littleton

Farmers market crops linger, but Halloween is just around the corner

Summer lingered a bit in downtown Littleton on Sept. 5, when the temperature hit a record-breaking 98 degrees.

It lingered, too, in Matthew Boulter’s farmers market trailer, parked in the Reinke Bros. parking lot on Prince Street, where boxes still brimmed with Olathe sweet corn and Palisade peaches.

“The corn is just perfect this year,” Boulter said. “Melons have been excellent too.”

Boulter will stick it out selling from the lot every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through at least the end of September, he said, and longer if this year’s apple crop comes in strong.

“We haven’t even started pumpkins and gourds yet,” Boulter said.

At the Littleton Market at Rapp Street and Alamo Avenue, owner Hannah King said the cold, wet spring meant some crops haven’t even come in yet.

“Harvest is basically a month late,” King said. “We’re just now in the middle of tomato season. There are lots of peppers yet to come.”

It’s crunch time for picklers and canners, King said, as a lot of produce hits its peak at the same time.

Across from Littleton Market, the ladies at the Painted Estate, an eclectic gift and décor shop, were planning a busy fall schedule.

“We’ve got all kinds of workshops coming up,” said owner Vivien Zafferani, who plans to teach classes on topics like making stenciled pillows and signs.

“It’s such a lovely time of year here,” Zafferani said. “The air gets crisp, and here at the shop, we’ll go straight from summer to thinking about the holidays.”

Back on Prince Street, a crew was hard at work on the Reinke Bros.

High marks but little change on state tests at LPS Littleton schools score well above average in science, math, English

Littleton Public Schools continued a trend of high scores on state assessment tests, though officials say there’s still a ways to go to meet state goals.

LPS students performed well above state averages at all levels of the Colorado Measures of Academic Success, or CMAS tests, in 2019, according to figures released in August by the Colorado Department of Education.

On the PSAT and SAT tests — which can be determining factors in college acceptance — LPS students scored several points higher than state averages.

By and large, however, the scores are nearly unchanged from last year, and still below where the district would like them to be.

“We’re not unhappy, but they’re flat,” said Patti Turner, the LPS director of learning services. “We’re still working hard to implement the test standards, and realistically they’re only a tiny sliver to demonstrate student performance across the school year.”

On the CMAS math tests, which are administered in elementary and middle school, 52.5% of LPS students met or exceeded expectations, compared to 34.7% statewide.

On the English/language arts tests, also administered in elementary and middle school, 64.1% of LPS students met or exceeded expectations, compared to 45.8% statewide.

Most of the LPS math and English scores experienced only negligible percentage changes from last year, with the exception of eighth-grade math, where scores increased by 19.2 percentage points over last year.

That’s a fluke, Turner said, because in past years accelerated math students were allowed to take high school tests. This year, the state required advanced math students to take tests within their grade level.

In science, which is administered in fifth, eighth and 11th grades, LPS saw 53.3% of students meet or exceed expectations, compared to 30.7% statewide.

The 11th-grade science scores, however, are difficult to use as a metric of student success because of their unusually high opt-out rate, Turner said.

Quality of Life Plus joins River Deep Alliance STAFF REPORT

The River Deep Foundation has joined forces with Quality of Life Plus, an organization that challenges university students to create novel solutions to improve the lives of injured veterans, first responders, and service members by designing and developing adaptive equipment.

In 2018, River Deep Foundation launched an initiative, made possible

by QL+, with engineering students from Colorado School of Mines. The students were challenged to design user-controlled adaptive equipment to allow individuals with disabilities the chance to participate in archery, fishing and recreational shooting.

This collaboration has allowed the

students to work closely with these individuals at River Deep outings, developing real-world solutions to their needs. As the project evolved and the value of this relationship became clear, River Deep Foundation invited QL+ to join the River Deep Foundation Alliance, a collaboration of aligned nonprofit organizations.

River Deep Foundation, based in

Denver, provides opportunities for recreational outings and activities to veterans and others who have suffered a life-changing catastrophic spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder or other physical, psychological or emotional trauma. The goal is to help them heal and re-acclimate and reengage in life.

to state data, far below the state participation rate of 61.0%.

Parents are allowed to opt their children out of any state test, Turner said, and few see the value in the high school science test, because it has no bearing on college applications.

The LPS scores on the SAT and PSAT were above state averages. The LPS average on the SAT was 1092 points, higher than the state average of 1001. PSAT scores in ninth and 10th grades showed similar margins.

While the tests are an important metric to measure student success, Turner said they don’t come close to offering a comprehensive picture.

“This is one set of data on a set of students on a particular day,” Turner said. “They’re only a piece of the puzzle. We triangulate them with other data points to help us understand how our kids are doing.”

While it’s nice to be above average, Turner said the district would like to see the scores climb even higher.

“Our goal is to have 100% of our kids ready for post-secondary options,” Turner said. “There’s no one answer to what would bring these scores up into the 90s. More institutional support, maybe, or a longer school year. We do the best we can for every student.”

It wasn’t uncommon to see whole districts scoring in the 90s back in the days of the Colorado Student Assessment Program, or CSAP tests, said Jeremy Meyer, the director of communications for the Colorado Department of Education.

Colorado quit administering the CSAP test in 2011, partly because the scores were so high, Meyer said.

“The legislature saw that kids were scoring really well on the CSAP, but then they’d get to college and need to take remedial classes,” Meyer said.

“The CMAS is better aligned to what kids should know in the 21st century.”

While CMAS tests are a narrow window into student performance, Meyer said they’re useful because they’re the only common measurement used to compare districts statewide.

“We can also parse the data a lot of ways,” Meyer said. “How kids from low-income families or kids of different races are doing, for instance.”

The tests are administered as part of a federal mandate, Meyer said, and schools with low scores may be eligible for additional funding.

The first CMAS tests were given in 2014, Meyer said, meaning only now are trends beginning to emerge.

“We want to see kids graduating with college and career-ready skills and knowledge,” Meyer said. “Statewide trends are showing increases.”

Hunger Free Colorado’s board of directors recently created the Kathy Underhill Scholarship Award to honor the legacy of Centennial resident Kathy Underhill, a nationally recognized leader and policy expert in solving hunger and founding CEO of Hunger Free Colorado.

The award will recognize an individual leading change in advocacy or health equity as it relates

to hunger and healthy food access, according to the online nomination form. It will be presented Oct. 30 during Hunger Free Colorado’s Hungry for Change Summit. The award includes a $1,000 scholarship to be used for professional development or personal growth. Examples of the intended use of these funds include receiving coaching, attending a conference, taking a class or training, or investing in materials or technology needed to further the awardee’s career.

Community walk draws attention to suicide prevention Denver Out of the Darkness walk is Sept. 21 STAFF REPORT

Volunteers from communities in the Denver metro area are joining a nationwide effort to draw attention to suicide prevention.

According to a news release, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of death for young people ages 10-24 in Colorado.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and National Suicide Prevention Week runs from Sept. 8-14.

The annual Denver Metro Out of the Darkness Community Walk, hosted by the AFSP Colorado Chapter,

begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at Coors Field. The walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education and support programs and its goal to reduce the annual U.S. rate of suicide 20 percent by the year 2025.

The Denver Metro Out of the Darkness Community Walk is one of more than 550 Out of the Darkness overnight, community and campus walks taking place nationwide this year. The walks are expected to unite more than 300,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts.

Last year, these walks raised more than $21 million for suicide prevention. Last year the Denver Metro Walk, raised more than $294,000 and had more than 4,600 participants.

How many times could you hear “Place the item in the bag” before losing your mind?

This is an ode to the 21st-century American grocery store.

Before there were the grocery stores we are familiar with today, there were general stores and “mom and pop” stores.

General stores might sell bulk foods, like soda crackers, and feature only two or three flavors of ice cream that had to be hand-packed.

I shopped at a mom and pop grocery store at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Sawtelle Boulevard in West Los Angeles when

I was in college.

The owners were always there, stocking shelves, sweeping, or workQUIET ing the register. I DESPERATION got to know them by name during my freshman year, but a year later, I moved and began my lifelong relationship with major chain stores.

The closest I have come lately to a mom and pop is in my Craig Marshall favorite Colorado Smith town, La Veta.

Charlie’s Market has been family owned and operated since 1937. You can get anything you

need, and there’s even an old-fashioned ice cream counter.

I should probably move to La Veta and get this over with.

This rat race. This Interstate 25.

This madding crowd.

The population of La Veta is around 800, and about half of them are artists.

I am close enough to walk to two major chain stores. There are a few convenience stores nearby too.

And they are always populated with a wide variety of characters that could fill a Fellini movie.

I see families. Four, five, six, seven, eight. I guess it’s an education. (It’s an education for those of us who have to shop around them.)

I see high school kids, usually clusters of girls or clusters of boys,

Vote no on CC Beware! That sweet little lamb over there really is a nasty wolf, well-disguised! That most disarming phrase, “without raising taxes,” starts the 2019 ballot issue known as CC, which was referred to us taxpayers by our very smart and kindly Democraticcontrolled Legislature, with only our fiscal well being in mind. Remember that in November.

But note: This wolf has some very sharp teeth. The minute we foolishly pass it, TABOR — the Taxpayers Bill of Rights, which has been a thorn

in the side of every big-spending Democratic legislator since it was passed in 1992 by us citizens to tame big government — will be gutted!

Words of encouragement, kindness draw attention

hanks again for all of the emails regarding my column and the “Winning Words” found here each week. I truly appreciate you all.

Interestingly enough, and based on the community’s feedback, it seems like the stories I have shared and columns I have writWINNING ten over the years that include “softer” WORDS topics such as kindness, encouragement, love, trust, hope and faith always generate more emails each week than when I speak about leadership, change, careers, conflict and professional growth.

Michael Norton If I write about having courage in the face of change, the emails typically tend to focus on how to find that courage more than deal with the change. When I address the importance of encouragement in a leadership role, the responses are weighted more heavily on the encouragement aspect and less on being a leader.

lent and upside-down world, we need to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that there is more than just the rush and crush of life that is right in front of us sometimes.

For some who deal with the brutality of reality so often, when they have the chance to catch a glimpse of something positive, they not only reach for it, but they leap for it. At least that is what I see in the emails I receive.

The other side of the story that I hear about is just how many of you seek out the positive words, the winning attitudes, the loving relationships, the majesty of the mountains, and the serenity of the sunsets as a defense mechanism. Recognizing that if you didn’t look for the “good,” that the “bad” would overtake you and consume your thoughts and energy.

I really love what one of our readers, Susan, shared with me in a recent email, “When I allow myself to see positive words, whether on a billboard, a storefront, a hand-painted wooden sign, online, in a magazine, or in one of your columns, it is like I am living in the light of those winning words.” She went on to share

This is why it is so important to find and strike the balance between the noise and what we allow in, and what we choose to defend against. It is so vital to have people and places in our lives that bring us joy and happiness. We can build ourselves up and choose to lift others up through the words we use, write, text and email. Positive, encouraging, good, powerful, life-giving, loving, kind and generous words bring us to living in the light, they help drown out the noise of negativity.

on target for growing popularity Local ranges offer opportunity to socialize, challenge oneself

A

rchery is challenging, but can also be a way to relax.

It’s a social sport, as well as a way for an individual to strive to achieve a personal best.

“It gets in your blood,” said Jim Murrow of Morrison. “Over all the years, I’m still learning. It seems like every year I learn something new from somebody.”

Murrow, 63, has been practicing archery since he was a little kid, he said.

It all started when his mother found a bow leaning against a tree somewhere in Colorado’s mountains sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s, Murrow said. Through the years, he started receiving bows and arrows as Christmas and birthday gifts.

“As I got older, I developed the interest,” Murrow said. “And it stayed with me through adulthood.”

Murrow currently serves the vice president of Golden High Country Archers and enjoys the sport for hunting and competitions.

“For me, it’s a constant learning process,” Murrow said. “You’re always trying to get better.”

Archery is the sport of using a bow to shoot arrows at a target. It dates back thousands of years — perhaps as long ago as the Stone Age — and evidence of humans using bows and arrows for hunting and warfare can be found around the world.

Today, people practice archery for leisure, hunting and competition.

“Archery is growing in popularity,” said Mark Giebel, director of Highlands Ranch’s Backcountry Wilderness Area.

But despite that, there is a lack of outdoor archery ranges, particularly 3D ranges, in the Denver metro area, Giebel said.

A 3D range is one where participants walk along a course, targeting three-dimensional foam models of animals.

To help fill that need, the Highlands Ranch Community Association opened its 3D archery range in the Backcountry Wilderness Area in June 2018. The range is a mile-and-a-half loop on a natural surface trail with 28 separate shooting stations, equipped with lifelike animals as targets.

“The Backcountry range is awesome,” said Josh Bednorz of Highlands Ranch. “It’s a place where my 4-year-old son and myself can spend time together shooting and hiking the trails.”

But along with that, there are a number of other reasons people enjoy the sport, he added.

The skill-building challenge is one thing people enjoy about it, Schultz said. Anybody can go out and shoot and have fun, he added, “but it’s really hard to get good at it.”

Some people enjoy the Zen aspect of it, Schultz said, and others like the social aspect.

“It offers a getaway from whatever’s going on at home or at work,” he said, but it’s “also a great way to get involved with something and meet new people.”

Schultz has been shooting nearly his whole life — his dad got him into archery about 35 years ago — and he personally enjoys competing and the technical aspect of the sport, including how the equipment functions. But his favorite part is seeing the progress of archery students and those new to the sport.

Powers Ave. Littleton Fine Arts Guild members who are photographers participate in other Guild exhibits, but last year, they decided to mount an exhibit of their own — “Aperture” — as well.

The 2019 juror was Mark Osler, a photojournalist who focuses on the community and educational work of nonprofits. He announced awards at the Aug. 6 reception.

In the back room is an intriguing image of a school of humpback whales circling and splashing — perhaps a school of smaller fish, aka “lunch,” made the mistake of choosing this route. Gulls circle overhead, hoping to score a meal too. Again, one imagines a soundtrack.

competitive tournaments, from beginners to state and national champion archers. It offers classes and private instruction, as well as opportunities for people to join a variety of leagues including Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) and Black Light Archery.

“We help people get started,” Schultz said of Empty Quiver Archery. “It’s common for someone to come and not hit a target their first time, but then they stick with it and eventually start competing.”

Golden High Country Archers club is one that offers local archery tournaments on its outdoor, 13-acre range in Golden. Some of the tournaments are just for fun and competition, such as the club’s Buckle Series, and others benefit a charity, said Morgan Whitelock, public relations director for Golden High Country Archers.

The tournaments are a great way for everybody to experience the range, Whitelock said, because they are open to anybody. Normally, only club members have access to the range, she added, and there is currently a waitlist for membership.

Whitelock, 28, of Centennial got into archery because she was seeking an activity that would provide her with a sense of community after her husband passed away.

“I was welcomed with open arms,” Whitelock said, adding she has now been practicing archery for about five years. A student studying petroleum engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, Whitelock said archery has given her strength that she did not realize she had — physically, academically and professionally.

“I go to the range to keep my head screwed on straight, whether to catch up with friends or relax alone,” Whitelock said. “There’s nothing more relaxing than being outside. And as long as you’re having fun, you’re doing it right.”

Aerospace middle school opens at Centennial Airport Charter adds new aspect to flight campus of Wings Over Rockies

The awkward middle school years got an exciting boost for many students last week when Colorado Skies Academy opened at Centennial Airport.

“It was very exciting the see students actively engaged in project-based learning,” said Robert Olislagers, the airport’s executive director. “This morning, I saw students learning about gravity using — I think — coffee filters for homemade parachutes. Several students commented that it was the best first day of school ever!”

The aerospace-focused middle school opened under the Cherry Creek School District after some bumps in its start. The district halted the school’s application in November, only to have that decision remanded — or sent back — by the Colorado State Board of Education in January.

The school district said it supports the tuition-free public charter school, but the school had failed to meet a necessary condition. Colo-

rado Skies on Nov. 15 was required to provide documents indicating prospective students’ intent to enroll, but the school submitted only 24 letters of intent at that point. The school’s application said it intended to open with 225 students.

The current enrollment is 130 students “and quickly growing,” said Dave Cieslak, a spokesperson for the school. Colorado Skies agreed to provide enrollment status updates to the school district and has been keeping officials up-to-date, Cieslak added.

After getting past the regulatory hurdles, Colorado Skies held its first day of classes Aug. 19, kicking off an educational program that focuses on STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

The school — launched by iLEAD, a California-based charter school entity — aims to prepare students for aviation and aerospace careers, its website says. The school is open to all residents of Colorado, not just those in Cherry Creek School District.

Suzanne Acheson, Colorado Skies’ director, said CSA is continuing to grow “and the sky truly is the limit!”

“We are overjoyed that hundreds of families from across our community have embraced Colorado Skies Academy and enrolled their learners at our school,” Acheson said in

a statement. “The overwhelming interest — which spread quickly through the community via social media and word of mouth — shows that parents want their children to benefit from our project-based learning curriculum and participate in our unique aerospace programs.”

In the right place The school is located at the 15acre “Exploration of Flight” site at Centennial Airport, a new location for the nonprofit Wings Over the Rockies, which focuses on education about aviation and space.

Wings Over the Rockies points to a great need for personnel in the air and space industry — pilots, aircraft maintenance workers, engineers, air-traffic control and the like — and the Exploration of Flight campus wants to be part of the solution. Spokesperson Ben Theune has said the nonprofit wants to make the site “an ecosystem for aerospace education.”

Wings’ site also features the Boeing Blue Sky Aviation Gallery, the campus’ first facility, which opened in July 2018. It’s a 19,000-square-foot hangar that offers visitors a chance to use flight simulators and even experience flying in a real plane.

The Ozmen Black Sky Space Gallery, the next addition, will likely open in 2021 or later, Theune said.

It’ll be based around cutting-edge space technology and concepts.

Facilities aside from the Blue and Black Sky galleries and Colorado Skies Academy are to be determined, and there will be space left to build on the site after Black Sky is finished, Theune said.

The Wings nonprofit also runs the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum at the former Lowry Air Force Base grounds in Denver.

Aviation pipeline Colorado Skies Academy sits at 13015 Wings Way near East County Line Road and South Peoria Street, on the southeast side of Centennial Airport.

The airport is mostly in unincorporated Arapahoe County just south of Centennial and extends south into Douglas County. The airport’s name predates the city’s.

Cherry Creek School District also offers aviation-focused education at the nearby Cherry Creek Innovation Campus, which opened this month.

That 117,000-square-foot campus offers many areas of study — from construction management to cooking, from airplane maintenance to cybersecurity.

The Innovation Campus will offer both college credit and industryrecognized certifications for students looking to go straight to the workforce.

personal challenges.

If he’s reelected, Reichardt said he hopes to keep up momentum on the $298 million bond approved by voters last fall, which includes a vast array of projects and school rebuilds around the district, including the development of an old car dealership beside Littleton High School into a career and technical education center.

“That will be an exciting component to our overall strategy to encourage innovation within the district,” Reichardt said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Jessica Roe Jessica Roe made headlines last spring as the face of a largely anonymous coalition alleging a toxic culture at Arapahoe High School.

With the height of the controversy in the rearview mirror, Roe said she’s focused on working with LPS to improve communication among students, parents and the district.

“While I don’t regret speaking up for parents who felt their voice wasn’t being heard after they made many attempts, our efforts paid off in that the district took note and took action on the items we requested they look into,” Roe said, saying the district improved processes to

take parent input and feedback.

Roe is the mother of two teenagers in Littleton schools, and she and her husband are both LPS graduates. Roe works as a private investigator and is finishing a master’s degree in legal studies at the University of Colorado’s Sturm College of Law. She previously worked in journalism and in communications for former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper.

“I feel our district needs a board member who is trusted by students, parents, educators and the public to be someone who not only listens, but is not afraid to push for change and speak up for what needs to be said,” Roe said in an email statement.

Roe said she hopes to advocate for more direct communication from the district, and for better education funding among a long-term slump in district enrollment and paltry state funding.

Crysti Copp Crysti Copp (whose name will appear as Christine on ballots) has children in seventh and ninth grades in Littleton schools. Copp says she is “almost a Colorado native” and was born to a military family stationed in the Philippines.

Copp holds a degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Copp, along with fellow board candidate Lindley McCrary, co-chaired the campaign committee that built support for the $298 million school

bond passed last fall by voters.

Copp works for Run4Funds, which conducts school fundraisers. She has also served in leadership roles in the parent-teacher organizations at her children’s schools.

“My extensive volunteering with the district makes me a great candidate,” Copp said. “I know a lot about how the district works, and I can slide in without any trouble.”

Copp said she would like to help see projects related to the bond carried out and would like to better communicate with parents.

“LPS is doing a lot of great things that people don’t even know about,” Copp said. “There’s a need to communicate differently about safety and mental health.”

Copp also said she wants to work on getting the Career and Technical Education Center project off the ground to help boost alternatives to four-year college.

“At every level, I’ve been impressed with what I’ve found at LPS, and I want to be involved in making things better in the track we’re on,” Copp said.

Lindley McCrary Lindley McCrary, a Littleton Public Schools graduate, has three kids at LPS — two in elementary school and one in middle school.

McCrary, a chemical engineer by trade, most recently worked as a part-time contractor in the oil and gas industry, but became a stay-athome parent to help support her

older daughter, who has an illness that keeps her out of school for prolonged periods.

The experience has given McCrary the ability to be more involved in her children’s education, she said. McCrary, along with fellow candidate Crysti Copp, served as co-chair of the committee that built support for last fall’s voterapproved school bond.

She also serves on the accountability committees at Franklin Elementary and the district level, and the district’s finance committee.

“I’ve seen the tremendous impact the strength of this district has on the community,” McCrary said. “It keeps our property values strong, and it creates a wonderful sense of togetherness in the community.”

McCrary said she would like to improve communications between the district and parents, and be a thoughtful and active listener when problems arise.

McCrary said she also hopes to be a voice to improve state-level funding.

“We’re choking schools with the funding we have,” McCrary said.

“It’s a big concern.”

McCrary said her role as the only candidate with children still in elementary school is important, because she is personally invested and connected to the younger grades.

“It can feel like a different world sometimes,” Copp said. “I understand their concerns and how they’re feeling.”

What do you do to nourish yourself before a race?

I carbo load the night before with pasta. Usually the morning before I have yogurt or something small.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

American long-distance runner Shalane Flanagan is one of the most instrumental runners and first woman to win a marathon.

What would be a perfect race in your sport?

I would like to feel good throughout the race and by the end I’ve used all my energy up because I’ve always had this issue where I leave too much in the tank and I just regret it at the end. I want to have a race where I consistently use my energy and maybe get a PR while doing it.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

Science, because I always like doing hands-on things like labs and such.

iley Stewart made a name for herself last year as a freshman cross country runner for Cherry Creek.

Now, in her sophomore year, every competitor recognizes her as one of the state’s elite girls cross country runners.

Stewart was the runner-up in the

2018 Centennial League meet and was seventh in last year’s Class 5A girls state championships.

“Last year I came in with no one knowing who I was,” said Stewart, who is also playing soccer as an outside back for a Real team. “They were like: `She is just sprinting the first mile and maybe she will die.’ Now they know I can push it and there can be some targets on my back.”

COACH’S TAKE: ‘Riley is extremely talented and has a real positive attitude towards running. She works as hard any kid I’ve had in practice. She had a good freshman year and so far we’ve seen an improving path.’

What do you like to do away from running and soccer?

I just like traveling with my family. I like going around to different places.

What is your favorite movie?

Probably one of those cheesy athletic ones like “Miracle on Ice.” I really like cheesy movies, then I can cry.

Is there strategy in a cross country race?

I have strategies like just trying to push myself that first mile and stay with that front pack. There are girls I like racing with which are equal to me, staying with them and trying to push myself that last mile to the end.

Is there teamwork in a cross country race?

Yes, even if you are not on the same team. You are usually in a pack and you are usually going to be with some girls and you are always pushing each other.

Why are you playing soccer and running cross country at the same time?

I feel like doing two sports at once because it helps me prevent leg injuries. I’ve been real lucky to not have any injuries in either sport.

recall talking with former Douglas County football coach Gene Hill after a couple games and he would always say his team needed to learn how to win.

Well, it’s early, but at least the Huskies were winners in their first game of the 2019 season with a 12-2 win over Mountain Range on Aug. 30, which matched Douglas County’s win total for the 2018 campaign.

Eric Rice, who OVERTIME migrated from Fort Collins High School, collected his first win as Douglas County’s new head football coach but said: “It was kind of a sloppy game for us on offense, Jim Benton specifically, but a win is a win.”

It was a needed win for the victory-starved DC football program, which has gone 4-16 in the past two seasons.

“You always want to start off the year 1-0, it doesn’t matter what program you’re at, it doesn’t matter if you are Valor Christian or you are us,’’ said Rice. “But it was maybe a little bit more important for us because we wanted to avoid that `we lost again, here we go again’ type of mentality that could easily have set in if we had not won that game.”

Rice inherited a strong sophomore class left behind by Hill, who is now an assistant coach at Chaparral, but had to put his stamp on the program.

“This was a similar situation when I took over at Fort Collins,” said Rice. “I got hired in 2003 and Fort Collins was coming off back-to-back 2-8 seasons.

“I only know how to do it one way. We started with a summer program. If you are not coming to the summer program, don’t count on playing. You can’t make attendance mandatory but I can sure make playing time what I want it to be based on who shows up to that program and commits themselves on a daily basis and works hard.”

Coloradans compete in Maui Channel Swim Club Greenwood Masters team finishes in 11th place STAFF REPORT

Six Masters swimmers from Club Greenwood participated in the Maui Channel Swim over Labor Day weekend.

Kirk Anderson, of Greenwood Village; Tim Hinchey, of Englewood; Steve Kahl, of Lone Tree; and Michael Mann, Bob Garland and Greg Scott, of Centennial, finished 11th out of 40 teams competing in the timed relay race with a time of 4 hours, 48 minutes, 39 seconds. The first-place Tattersalls Masters Australia finished in 3:19:48.

According to information on the Maui Channel Swim web page, each team member swims a half-hour leg to start the race. After the initial 30-minute leg, team members then swim for 10 minutes each until the final team member crosses the finish line.

“The Maui Channel Swim is a great test of endurance, but more than that a great time to bond with close friends and family,” Kahl said.

The race begins at the pier at Club Lanai on the island of Lanai and ends on the beach in front of Kaanapali Beach Hotel on the island of Maui. The distance from start to finish, as the bird flies, is about 9.9 miles, but actual distance swum is longer depending on currents, winds, etc., the web site says.

Channel with my Club Greenwood teammates was experiencing the teamwork and encouragement for each other with we had already developed while training together back home at Greenwood Masters,” Scott said. “This helped us get through some very challenging conditions.”

Hinchey agrees.

“It’s always special to team up with my friends from Club Greenwood Masters for any event, but traveling to Maui was truly a highlight,” Hinchey said. “The conditions were challenging and only made our relay bond stronger. Can’t wait to do it again with these guys.”

In addition to the six swimmers, each team is accompanied by an escort boat, with the captain acting as navigator, and teams are responsible for their own navigation. Depending on conditions and navigation, the fastest teams finish in 3 to 4 hours. The race has a time limit of 8 hours and it is not uncommon for teams not to finish, the website says.

“What I realized most from this race is the genuine love for swimming and fortitude to never give in that Greg, Steve, Mike, Kirk and Tim have,” said Garland, of Centennial. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to swim amongst them.”

Mann, also of Centennial, said it was “great fun swimming against the Molokai express. Club Greenwood boys learned how to race in the ocean. Can’t wait till next year.”

He also got his wife, Laurie, to run a speed and conditioning program, relied on strength and conditioning coach David Goodfellow, and didn’t ignore little things in his detailed approach to the season.

“I brought in my wife to run our speed and conditioning program,” recalled Rice. “My wife ran track at Penn State and she is a two-time 400-meter state champion here in Colorado. She still holds the 100and 200-meter records at Fort Collins. I said train like a track team this summer so we can get faster and work on fundamentals.

“We have a really great strength coach here at the school and he does a good job with the strength program. We have a detailed approach. All the way down to little things like why we’re all going to dress the same for practice.

Everybody is going to wear the same stuff. I was able to hire a couple assistant coaches who were ex-military and they hold people accountable to the details like nobody’s business.”

One game or win doesn’t make a season but it’s a start for Douglas County.

“All these things add up to the potential to put a decent product out on the field,” said Rice. “That doesn’t necessarily mean a win but there’s a good chance you will be able to compete.”

Honor roll Each week several performances of South Metro athletes and teams will be highlighted. This week’s performances were selected from games, matches and meets between Aug. 30 through Sept. 3.

Regis Jesuit scored 17 fourthquarter points for a 23-13 win over Pomona on Aug. 30. Raiders’ sophomore quarterback Nicco Marchiol completed 17 of 26 passes for 316 yards and a touchdown.

Highlands Ranch quarterback Jake Rubley passed for two touchdowns and ran for another in a 30-20 football loss to Eaglecrest on Aug. 30.

Kate Manley had three hits and drove in four runs and Michelle Salazar also had three hits with one RBI in Arapahoe’s 10-2 softball win over Rampart on Aug. 31.

Castle View’s football team rallied for a 28-27 win over Fossil Ridge on Aug. 30 and the Sabercats gambled to get the win. Castle View went for a two-point conversion in the final few minutes and senior Antonio Ursetta was credited with the two-point conversion.

Ponderosa quarterback Jack Hanenburg hit on 18 of 30 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns but the Mustangs dropped a 28-21 decision to Parker rival Legend on Sept 30. Ben Beecher led Ponderosa with 17 tackles.
