MY NAME IS

Great-grandmother and former union president Little house on the prairie I was born in a little house on the prairie in Weld County. The nearest town was Kimball, Nebraska. We lived there till I was 3, then the government bought up all the farmers who were going broke in the Dust Bowl and the Depression. It became the Pawnee Grasslands.

My father became a migrant farmworker. He followed the crops through the year.

Finally my dad went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad, and we moved to Denver. Eventually he wound up driving the old Denver streetcars.

During the war During World War II, there were rations. We couldn’t get shoes. I had cardboard shoes — they got wet and the soles fell off. We couldn’t get ingredients, and my mom made jelly out of grape Kool-Aid. My uncle went missing in action in the war. Another uncle joined the Marines. They both came home, though.

I dropped out of school to get married. I had my first kid when I was 17, and I had three kids by age 21. I got my GED when I was 23.

I was pretty much a housewife, then I worked in a chicken-processing

plant. My job was to pack all the parts into the foam trays. In the summers, I worked in a canning plant.

Look for the union label Eventually I became head of a women’s union at a mill. The men were the bosses and the women were the workers. We were terribly sexually harassed, so we formed a union. I was about 28 years old, and they elected me president. I was proud, but I never had another peaceful moment.

We didn’t even have a drinking fountain. It was hot, and they wouldn’t give us fans. So what did they do? They piped in music to keep us content! We stayed mad and active, and eventually we won and got our fountain and fans.

Family life I got divorced after 17 years of marriage. I said that for my first 17 years, I did what my parents said, then the next 17 years I did what my husband said, so I said the next 17 were mine.

That only lasted seven years before I remarried.

My second husband is passed on now, but now my life is filled with kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

I’m also an Odd Fellow and a Rebekah — we visit the sick, bury the dead, educate the orphans and care for the widows. I enjoy the fellowship.

Plus, it keeps me out of the bars.

South Suburban centers get updates in August Staggered closures to allow for major cleaning, improvements, equipment installations STAFF REPORT

Recreation centers in the South Suburban Parks and Recreation district will be temporarily closed on a staggered schedule in August to allow for major cleaning, new equipment and overall improvements.

While one center is closed, passes and punches can be used at the other centers.

In addition to the invididual work being performed, each recreation center will have its pools drained and acid washed, touch-up painting will be done and deep cleaning and organization will be completed.

The first center to close will be the Lone Tree Recreation Center, 10249 Ridgegate Circle. From Aug. 5-9, Lone Tree will be getting upgrades to its babysitting and preschool rooms.

In addition, the gymnasium wll be repainted and the locker room tile will be regrouted.

Buck Recreation Center, 2004 W. Powers Ave., Littleton, will close Aug. 19-25. During the closure, renovation work will continue on the restrooms and locker rooms, and water feature upgrades will be installed in the pool.

The final closure will take place Aug. 26-30 at Goodson Recreation Center, 6315 S. University Blvd., Centennial. During this time, work will continue on the renovation of the adult locker rooms, new cardio equipment will be installed, some gymnastics equipment will be upgraded, and the kiddie pool slide will be replaced.

In addition, the aerobic and dance room floors and the racquetball courts will be refinished. New cabinets and counters will be installed in rooms 4 and 5.

The registration office at Goodson will not be open for walk-in business and will have modified phone hours during the closure. Registrations will be available online at ssprd.org, or by calling 303-347-5999 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

5 things to know: Housing market flattening out Real estate boom settles down, ‘buyer’s market’ emerging

The Denver area’s real estate boom that saw rents and housing prices skyrocket in recent years is slowing down, experts say.

“It’s flattened out a lot,” said Jill Schafer, the head of the Denver Metro Association of Realtors’ Market Trends Committee. “It’s still a good market for sellers, but buyers are regaining a lot more leverage.”

Here are five things to know: Inventory is up Inventory of homes for sale is way up, with 9,520 homes for sale in the metro area in July — an increase of 28% over last year, and a level not seen since 2013, before the latest boom.

Increasing the supply side of the equation eases the frenzy among buyers, Schafer said.

“We’re seeing far fewer multipleoffer situations,” she said.

Prices are holding steady, with the median housing price of $428,000 up just 1.9% over last year.

That’s below the ideal appreciation rate of 3% to 5% per year, Schafer said, but eases the pressure on buyers after years of sometimes double-digit growth rates.

It also loosens up the market for sellers, she said.

“A lot of people didn’t want to sell because they didn’t know where to go,” Schafer said. “It locked up the market. But now, they have places to go.”

Starter homes still lag The market for starter homes is still tight, Schafer said, because much of the new inventory is still high-priced stock.

That’s thanks to a convergence of market conditions, she said: Land in the metro area is expensive, and tariffs imposed on raw materials by President Trump are driving up construction costs. Further, high demand for contractors means they can name high prices, Schafer said.

The result, Schafer said, is that there’s little motivation for developers to build starter homes. The majority of starter home building is in places like Denver, which offers subsidies to build lower-cost homes.

Condo construction is starting to tick back up after years of underbuilding, Schafer said, which may be an outcome of a 2017 law meant to ease the burden on builders imposed by

a 2005 law that made it easier to sue condo builders.

Just asking...

Price reductions are becoming more common, Schafer said, with high-end homes seeing the biggest shift.

Homes priced between $1.5 million and $1.75 million are being sold for 91% of asking price on average, Schafer said. Starter homes and lower-end homes are selling for much closer to asking price.

“There are sellers who overvalue their homes,” Schafer said. “They’re paying attention to automated websites. Those sites don’t know if you’re on a busy street or the condition of the property.”

The slowdown means it’s more important than ever for sellers to enlist the help of a professional, Schafer said.

“People can’t price like they could two years ago,” Schafer said. “For a long time, people didn’t have to do anything to their house and it would sell. Now, you really need to get the place in shape first. It can take months of work to get the highest price.”

Great time for buyers, but beware The increase in housing inventory is good news for buyers especially when coupled with still-low mortgage inter-

est rates, Schafer said.

That said, there are still perils to look out for.

An experienced real estate agent can recognize red flags, Schafer said, like fix-and-flip properties that have been done poorly, or multi-unit projects that are in trouble.

“Certain builders are way behind estimated delivery dates because of the lack of contractors,” Schafer said.

On the flip side, some projects have too much inventory building up, in some cases because builders are overpricing homes. In some places, that’s because landscaping or accompanying commercial developments are way behind schedule.

Expect more scrapes Though Denver has outlawed the construction of slot homes — jamming multipleunit structures into singlefamily home neighborhoods — communities can expect more scrape-off homes, where builders demolish an older home and replace it with a new home that’s often far larger.

“Buyers love new,” Schafer said.

“They want the latest and greatest.

You’d think with all these fix-’em-up shows on TV about old homes, people would want to go that way, but they don’t. They’re willing to pay for something modern.”

City gearing up for changes at Mineral and Santa Fe Engineers drafting plans to put $9 million grant to work at congested crossing

City officials are gearing up to revamp one of the city’s most congested intersections, though a full-scale fix is still a long way off.

Littleton recently landed a $9.1 million federal grant to overhaul the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Mineral Avenue, Public Works Director Keith Reester told a city council study session on July 23.

Addressing problems at the crossing is a top priority for city engineers, Reester said.

“This is one of the most challenging and highest-accident intersections in the city,” Reester said. “Traffic could get even higher with new development growing to the south.”

City engineers have settled on a plan for the grant, Reester said: a “quadroad” interchange, which will add a sort of mini-beltway on the southwest and northwest corners of the intersection, redirecting much of the traffic that currently lines up to turn left in the center of the intersection.

The project involves eight different entities, Reester said, including Denver, Douglas and Arapahoe counties, as well as Sheridan and Englewood — all governing bodies the stretch of road passes through.

The idea is to undertake a largescale, holistic study of the whole corridor, to ensure that any road upgrades undertaken by municipalities fit into an effective larger framework, Reester said.

The total cost of the study, which is expected to kick off next month and last two and a half years, is $3 million — 50% of which will come from federal funds, with Littleton’s share of the remainder at $165,000.

Participating in the study is vital to making sure that upgrades made by the Colorado Department of Transportation fit in with Littleton’s needs, Reester said, citing a recent example in which CDOT engineers wanted to reduce left-turn opportunities along Santa Fe through Littleton, which would have reduced access to local businesses.

“For CDOT, their goals are travel and safety, and obviously those are high priorities for us too,” Reester said, “but we also need to convey to them our corridor character and how that impacts our community.”

Arapahoe County Fair is sign of summer 113-year-old event is taste of tradition

Livestock and the lilt of country music set the stage for the annual Arapahoe County Fair, where families experienced new twists at the 113-yearold event.

Along with the customary carnival, 4-H activities and live entertainment, new programs included a Mexican rodeo, a butterfly festival and the Home Brew and Food Festival, which highlighted budding homebrewers and food vendors.

Stephanie Valenzuela, 45, took in the festivities from her mobile vending station, where she doled out funnel cakes and fried Oreos. Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, she travels to different states, serving treats at county fairs and mall gatherings.

Asked about her favorite part of fairs, Valenzuela said: “The people.

Meeting new people, seeing new things and the smile on their face when you give them what they came for.”

Her decked-out snacks station stood near the towering Ferris wheel and other carnival rides — watching people get on them is another favorite for Valenzuela.

Jeffco Schools announces decision not to reconstruct Columbine Building could remain for ‘20 years or more’

When Principal Scott Christy learned the school district was considering the demolition and reconstruction of Columbine High School, “I was emotionally torn,” he said.

“I don’t think there’s any other principal in the world who would say, ‘no, I don’t want a new building.’ But this is a place our community is very protective of,” he said.

Having chosen to preserve the building, the district has plans to improve school safety in addition to the current security improvements being funded by bond money.

Jeffco Public Schools and its design team are planning for a perimeter to be built around the campus to lower the number of trespassing incidents, Glass said. He added that the perimeter will aesthetically match the neighborhood architecture.

The district has yet to determine the cost of the project but “it will be more expensive than a lot of fences we build around other schools,” he said.

Finances for the project will be diverted from the district’s capital fund, he said. “This project now rises to the top of our list.”

Construction of the perimeter will likely be incorporated into the schedule for other Columbine renovations, which will begin in the fall and take about 18 months to complete, Glass said.

Christy believes in the upcoming changes to accomplish the community’s original goal of protecting students and staff, he said — not only as a principal, but as a parent, with his son planning to attend the school in 2020.

“I can’t imagine a school being more secure than Columbine. I wouldn’t want him to go anywhere else,” he said.

“It’s a special place.”

Keeping Colorado’s aerospace industry booming and competitive will require creative approaches to education, officials at Lockheed Martin told Ivanka Trump, senior White House adviser and the president’s daughter, on July 22.

The aerospace giant is facing recruitment challenges in the face of a wave of retiring baby boomers and an insufficient number of graduates with science degrees, Heather Erickson, Lockheed’s director of talent and organizational capability, told Trump.

“We’re looking at accelerating talent development for today, not tomorrow,” Erickson said, touting the Jefferson County defense contractor’s apprenticeship programs and blooming partnership with Metropolitan State University of Denver.

Trump visited the facility as part of a national tour for the White House’s “Pledge to America’s Workers” initiative, which seeks to encourage states, universities and companies to work together to develop apprenticeships and workforce training programs.

discussion with Lockheed leaders, local elected officials and internship participants before touring the sprawling facility near Chatfield State Park.

Lockheed’s signature skills development program is the Advanced Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Program, or AMTAP, said Sarah Turner, the program’s manager.

AMTAP helps create a “career pipeline” for participants by certifying

them in a variety of manufacturing skills, Turner said.

That’s crucial, Turner said, because “the ability to afford a four-year degree is increasingly difficult” for many students, with many increasingly turning to trade schools and community colleges.

Lockheed’s programs are encouraging, said Denver’s deputy mayor Murphy Robinson, because “it’s the

private sector that will lead” efforts to develop Colorado’s workforce.

Trump said America’s booming economy with record-low unemployment offers a natural time to innovate and collaborate on training programs.

“The private sector has to tell us what skills are in demand,” Trump said. “And we need to make sure skills in tech schools are aligned with those demands.”

Streets at SouthGlenn plan awaits traffic study Citizen group continues to monitor redevelopment of outdoor mall

A potential influx of new apartments and businesses replacing the Sears and Macy’s at Centennial’s flagship shopping development has spurred dozens of residents to voice their concerns, but a recent meeting showed they may face an uphill battle.

But it hasn’t been for lack of trying. Ron Phelps, a candidate in the November election for Centennial City Council, led a meeting in April at the nearby Southglenn Country Club to collect residents’ input on the possible redevelopment.

He also met with a leader of Alberta Development Partners — a key player in how The Streets at SouthGlenn will be reshaped — on July 16, discussing in part one of the community’s main concerns: added traffic.

“He didn’t offer something he would be able to do — he just kind of let that go,” Phelps said of Don Provost, the founding principal of Alberta. “The conversation on traffic in general was really two perspectives without any agreement of what

could be done or should be done.”

At the outdoor mall at East Arapahoe Road and South University Boulevard, the recently closed Sears property is owned by Northwood Investors. Alberta owns the Macy’s — which is still in business but expected to close in coming years — along with controlling the rest of nearly all of SouthGlenn.

But because Northwood and Alberta want to change the mix of types of properties there, they need the city’s approval for certain changes.

Northwood wants to turn the Sears property mainly into apartments, with retail possible on the ground floor, developers said at a March 19 community meeting organized by the city. Alberta wants to put apartments and office space, and possibly retail and entertainment — think something like Lucky Strike Bowling — where Macy’s stands, within a few years.

On the Sears and Macy’s land, 800 apartment units could be possible on each property, but Alberta is aiming for about 400. It’s unclear how close to 800 Northwood’s number would be, but its plan is for five stories. A possible green area with a fountain could also be added to the Macy’s land, developers said at the March meeting.

Traffic on mind Residents at the gathering at the

country club on April 8 voiced concerns about the potential effect on the area’s property values, noise and traffic. A sticking point has been the potential for more traffic through residential streets near SouthGlenn, like East Easter Avenue, which winds through adjacent neighborhoods.

A study on the plan’s traffic impact could be completed in mid-August, according to Allison Wittern, city spokeswoman. It’s being carried out

by Felsburg, Holt and Ullevig, or FHU, an engineering and planning firm.

The study will examine intersections around the perimeter of SouthGlenn: those along Arapahoe Road, University Boulevard, Easter Avenue and South Race Street, which roughly represent its edges.

The traffic study will evaluate the need for mitigation measures and, if they’re deemed necessary, will describe for such measures, according to FHU fact sheets on the study’s scope.

It will also examine whether “significantly higher traffic volumes” could end up traveling in and out of surrounding residential neighborhoods, the document said. If such volumes are found, FHU will evaluate those areas for potential mitigation measures, it continued.

When reached out to regarding concerns about traffic, Provost said,

Phelps mentioned the July 16 meeting, which Provost confirmed, in an emailed newsletter Phelps has been sending for months to area residents with updates on the development process. More than 80 people signed into Phelps’ April meeting, according to Phelps, who said the number of people who receive the newsletter has grown to 357.

Provost agreed to meet with a small group of residents in early August, Phelps said. Nine people, including leaders of nearby homeowners’ and civic associations, plan to attend, according to Phelps, so Provost can hear perspectives and information from the group.

Phelps also met with a development manager of Northwood on July 25, he said, who “expressed his desire to do all that he can to address the group’s concerns and issues but made no specific commitments.”

City must follow rules Whether developers’ plans go through depends on the city’s determination of whether they meet the requirements of the city’s Land Development Code, which sets zoning districts and design standards.

hen Chopin — one of my favorites — died, he began to decompose.

No QUIET one is born with a sense of humor, and DESPERATION you can’t order one online. Some people are funny and some people aren’t.

One of my sister’s husbands thought he was funny. Being Craig Marshall around him was painful. I had to bite Smith my tongue.

It’s a sense of wanting to try again, it’s a feeling that even though we lost or made a mistake, we ask to be put back in the game or we put ourselves back in the game. Failure isn’t failing, its actually just putting us back in a position to want whatever it is we failed at or lost even more. It drives us to a place of fortitude.

Now, if the “it” is something we do not have passion for or a task or event where we were half-hearted from the beginning, that is a different story. Because if we think we failed there, we didn’t. I say that because if we are not connected to the outcome physically, spiritually, or emotionally, then it was just something we tried and nothing more. No failure here.

A fighter doesn’t lose a fight because they get knocked down, they lose a fight because they stay down. As we go through life, we are going to get knocked down.

Opioid crisis at the root — what are we so afraid of?

A

key part of the seminary program I’m in is studying the values that drive our decisions individually and collectively. Yes, it’s important to triage and address the top layers of a problem to stop the bleeding, so to speak, but until you get to the foundational cause of it, the challenge will not go away. We will continue to see it pop up GUEST or cycle back, and COLUMN we’ll keep throwing dollars and time at it wondering why it persists. We can see this in looking at one of society’s ails right now, the opioid crisis.

Gratefully, the Colorado Legislature and Gov. Jared Polis have Linda Newell already started making inroads to the top and middle layers of our affliction. The 2019 legislative session had a successful package of bills about safe use, storage, disposal of opioids, treatment of addiction in the criminal justice system, substance abuse training required of certain mental health professionals, augmenting the

prescription drug monitoring program, etc. All of these are wonderful steps in grappling with this complex issue before us.

That said, what is underneath all those that is not being addressed? Why are physicians prescribing (or overprescribing) opioids in the first place?

Why are people taking pills to deal with pain? What are people trying to escape?

In our Western allopathic model of healthcare, medical students are most often taught how to help patients avoid pain or death at all costs. Then, they get into their practice and realize how physician reviews on the internet, for instance, can substantially help or hinder bringing in clientele.

So, they can get caught up in the “customer is always right” syndrome and attempt to remove any ounce of pain with their patients, in fear of them not being a “satisfied customer.”

Thus, anything above a pain level 3 gets a prescription. I’m not saying this is true for every physician, of course.

But collectively, this has become a healthcare professional “group think.”

We as patients have also been doing everything we can to avoid pain, mak-

ing drug prescriptions a common ask in our doctor’s appointment. Why are we so afraid of experiencing pain?

To be clear I am not talking about severe, intolerable, or unending pain here. Those need remedy or relief, if possible.

But for those of us who have experienced childbirth or a kidney stone, we know that we can make it through gnawing or excruciating pain if we have a mission in mind. Our pain is not something to be feared, but rather, used. It is there to tell us to notice it and move through it. Guided imagery, hypnotherapy, and meditation are all natural, nonmedical ways to move through senses of pain effectively. For me, those are how I made it through two C-sections and two shoulder surgeries without using prescriptions.

With focus, I thankfully learned how to move into the pain and listen to my body to get to the other side of it.

I recognize this might seem general-

ized. There are obvious exceptions to this hypothesis. But overall, I believe that we patients are so afraid of pain (emotional and physical) that we are pampering ourselves into addiction. It can take as little as five pills to become physically addicted to opioids. Our doctors need to have the courage to say no to their “customers” and treat them as patients instead and saying no to the pharmaceutical companies offering rewards for prescribing more.

Are we really so fragile that we need to escape our vulnerable moments, or could we gain guidance from them?

When we get knocked down or slowed down — and it will happen — I hope that we will remember that failed attempts are awesome. They are never a reason to quit — they are the exact opposite, failed attempts are the reason we push forward, they are the fuel behind our passion and drive to succeed.

Roy was born in Findlay, OH to Joseph McGown and Villa Curry on November 13, 1936. He went to school at Findlay High School. He married Evelyn Payne and they had two children Lori McGown-Perez of Elbert, CO and Leigh McGown-Kauffman of Glenwood Springs, CO. He graduated from Ohio State University with a de-

gree in Electrical Engineering. He worked as an Aerospace Engineer for Lockheed Martin for 35 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the Air Force. Roy was involved in the design of the Viking Lander of the first Mars Mission in 1976. Roy had a sharp mind for technology and communication systems and was an accomplished woodworker. He enjoyed golf and fly-fishing.

Roy is preceded in death by his father Joseph, mother Villa and brother Jack McGown. Roy is survived by his daughters Lori and Leigh, his grandchildren Nico Perez, Rhiannon Kauffman, Serena Kauffman and Rio Kauffman. His children remember him as a caring father who encouraged them to pursue their goals.

The chew yonder Edible and medicinal plants can be found growing around metro area

ost people would look at a backyard filled with weeds and see a problem. Kate Armstrong sees a feast.

Armstrong is an urban forager — someone versed in wild edible and medicinal plants of the urban environment. She leads nature walks and seminars that teach people a new way to look at the plants in their midst.

“People are astonished when they find out how much food is all around us,” Armstrong said. “Nature isn’t here to hurt us, it’s here to give us everything we need.”

Indeed, in the course of a short stroll through a Lakewood back yard, Armstrong pointed out dozens of plants growing in sidewalk cracks or along fences with uses ranging from salad greens to treating toothache.

There are very few toxic plants in our region, Armstrong said. Most plants are technically edible, it’s just that most don’t taste very good.

For novice foragers, though, Armstrong recommends a few highly common — and highly tasty — plants that abound throughout the Denver area.

There’s purslane, a low-growing weed with thick leaves and meaty stems, which can be eaten raw in a salad, fried in stir-fry, used as a soup thickener, or pickled.

Also abundant is mallow, a roundleafed weed that also makes a good snack when eaten raw, but also provides chewy seedpods that Armstrong calls “cheeses.” The stems can be roasted and eaten like pretzel sticks, she said, and the bigger leaves can be used as mini-serving trays for hors d’oeuvres.

Lamb’s quarter grows in moist, disturbed soil, and produces leaves with a mild, lettuce-like taste. A single lamb’s quarter plant can provide months of salad greens by snipping off tender young leaves, Armstrong said.

Dandelion greens are best eaten raw, Armstrong said, and are excellent for detoxing the body.

Even bindweed, the bane of so many gardeners and lawn lovers, produces tiny white flowers with a delicate, floral taste that make an elegant garnish in a salad, Armstrong said.

Only a couple plants common in our region are poisonous, Armstrong said.

One is hemlock, which grows in moist soil and produces spindly, wispy leaves that are hard to tell apart from carrot tops. The other is death camas, which looks similar to wild onion or wild

Burger said. “We’re starting to move past our diets of overly processed foods. It’s empowering to feed yourself or heal yourself from things in your landscape. These are things our ancestors knew, and they still work today.”

Purslane, a common garden weed, tastes great in stir-fries. garlic, but doesn’t have their characteristic savory odor.

A more common problem, Armstrong said, is herbicides and pesticides. Urban foragers should try to ensure that the place they’re gathering from hasn’t been sprayed to keep weeds and bugs down, she said. That’s easy in your own back yard, but when foraging along roadsides or other wilder places, a key is to watch out for areas with monocultures — where only one type of plant is abundant.

That’s often a sign that sprays are in use.

The safest bet, Armstrong said, is to let your own yard go wild, which will also help it become a haven for pollinators and other wildlife.

“This can be a really fun hobby, and a great way to reconnect with nature,” Armstrong said. “And, who knows? If push comes to shove, it’s knowledge that could come in handy.”

Hit the trails Beyond the back yard, Colorado provides all sorts of edible goodies, said Blake Burger, a horticulturist with the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Spruce tree tips are high in vitamin

Bindweed flowers have a delicate floral taste.

C, Burger said, and make a tasty tea, or an addition to herb butters or marinades for fish and chicken.

Currant berries are plentiful in the region, Burger said, and make delicious syrups and jams.

Rose hips, the pink or red seedpods left behind after the flower dies, are also high in vitamin C and make a distinctive sour, floral tea.

It’s important to harvest wild edibles ethically and consciously, Burger said.

As a rule of thumb, try not to gather more than 10% from a single plant, or from a patch of plants.

Interest in wild edible plants is growing, Burger said. He leads the Denver Botanic Gardens’ new herbalism certificate program, which covers how to use a variety of wild and cultivated plants for health and medicine.

Burger, like Armstrong, is tied into the flourishing community of urban foragers in the Denver area. There’s a lot of activity in the subculture these days, Burger said, with classes around the metro area filling up quickly.

“I think people are starting to experience a shift in their vision, and are realizing natural is the way to go,”

Do it right While Burger and Armstrong said the best place to forage is on land you or someone you know owns, so you can be sure of herbicide use, it’s possible to forage in other environs.

There’s no specific rule against gathering wild edibles in most of the parks in the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District, said Skot Latona, who manages South Platte Park in Littleton. It’s against the rules to gather in South Platte Park itself, though.

While gathering a few berries or leaves isn’t going to get you busted, Latona said, “the behavior would be judged on observed damage to park property. Don’t go digging up roots, disturbing soil or removing entire species.”

Wild edibles are everywhere in South Suburban properties, said Victoria Sutton, an interpreter at South Platte Park, including wild asparagus, chokecherries and wild plums.

But, she said, consider your impact on your fellow animals when you forage, Sutton said.

“It’s fun to take a nibble here and there, but those plants can be a matter of life and death for wildlife in our area,” Sutton said. “Don’t go hauling basketfuls of material out of parks.”

Even for those not hitting the trails, there should be lots to munch on this year in back yards alone, Burger said.

“It was a wet spring, and plants are delayed in their growth, but strong” Burger said. “If you’re going to get into urban foraging, this is a good year for it.”

The second-place winner is a remarkable ceramic installation by Tina Suszynski. Hundreds of egg-shaped, various-sized and earthycolored forms are stacked in a corner of the Curtis’ small stage, looking as though they might easily roll away to somewhere else.

‘The Tradition Continues’ Community celebration is summertime hit in Littleton

ittleton’s signature community celebration is back as the 91st Annual Western Welcome Week runs for 10 days from Aug. 9-18.

This year’s theme is “The Tradition Continues.”

Cindy Hathaway, executive director of Western Welcome Week, said the theme is fitting because the celebration is a staple of the community.

WWW is also such a longstanding tradition that it was registered as a Local Legacies event by Congress.

“The 100-year celebration seems like it will be here tomorrow because time goes by so fast,” Hathaway said in the leadup to this year’s event.

“Western Welcome Week continues to be a source of pride for generations here.”

While some traditions have come and gone though the years, Hathaway said it’s the parade that is the event highlight, occurring each year since the first WWW (then called “Homecoming”) was held in 1929 — and this year’s parade is expected to be as big as ever.

Hathaway said the parade’s 2019 grand marshal was selected in keeping with the theme of celebrating tradition — Mickey Kempf, of Bradford Auto Body. Kempf was chosen because of his family’s strong ties to Littleton and a tradition of carrying on the family name and serving the community well. Hathaway said Kempf carries on the commitment to community of his mother and stepfather, Mary and George “Brad” Bradford.

The Bradford family will also be represented in an old tradition being brought back. This year, the

duck race will return to the event lineup. Named the Bradford Duck Race, participants will be able to purchase a duck to race in Little’s Creek. The revived duck race in 2019 is presented by the Henry Design Group and sponsored by Meretta Law. The ducks will be released to race along the creek on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m. Hathaway said the duck race has come and gone over the years, with the original races being held back in the 1970s.

Sean Swallow said he’s excited to have the duck race back this year as he recalled enjoying the tradition as a kid in 1979.

“It’s a great part of Western Welcome Week,” he said. “It’s so much fun. I remember as a kid chasing my duck down the river.”

Hathaway said naming the race after Brad and Mary Bradford is fitting because it honors the philanthropy and community fun that the Bradfords enjoyed.

Don’t forget the food Hathaway said as with every year, the food is a big part of the event, especially at this year’s 19th Taste of Western Welcome Week.

“We have so much beer, wine and food — this is truly a great event,” Hathaway said. “We highlight local restaurants and breweries, and for the price, you can’t beat this part of the celebration.”

Taste of Western Welcome Week is a fun, adultsonly event. Tickets are $25 in advance at the Western Welcome Week office, 5890 S. Bemis Street, and at Lewis & Cluck, 5664 S. Prince St. On the day of the event, ticket prices are $30. Price includes unlimited food and beverage tastes.

Parade marshal Mickey Kempf proud of tradition of service Bradford Auto Body owner carries on legacy of altruism

Brad Bradford founded the shop in 1949, and Kempf, 69, took over the shop from his parents in 1980. While the shop has always stayed busy getting dents and dings out of cars, the family has always made time to give back.

“It makes you feel like what you do matters,” Kempf said. “It’s about protecting your fellow human beings.”

Some of Kempf ’s work carries a more evocative message: A few years back, he and Bob’s Towing exhibited a wrecked car at Arapahoe Community College as part of a driver education event, meant to demonstrate the potential consequences of distracted driving.

The purpose, Kempf said, was to remind drivers young and old to “Hang up and drive. We need you, and your phone call can wait.”

Kempf, a father of three and grandfather and great-grandfather to many, said he’s humbled and honored to be the parade’s Grand Marshal, and proud to be part of Littleton tradition.

“Anything my family can do to for our community,” Kempf said, “we’ll be there.”

There’s gold in that thar river Learn to pan like early prospectors at South Platte Park

Would-be prospectors can try their hand at gold panning as part of Western Welcome Week on Aug 10, with South Platte Park rangers teaching the finer points of one of Colorado’s oldest activities.

Yes, there’s still gold in the South Platte, said South Platte Park interpreter Victoria Sutton.

The Colorado Gold Rush of 1859 was set off after prospectors found gold dust in the Platte just downstream in Englewood, according to a plaque in Englewood’s Cushing Park, and modern-day panners can still find “color” in the river’s sandbars.

“Chances are you’ll find about as much gold as they found back

then, which is to say very little,” Sutton said as she swirled a pan in the Platte River on July 17.

“But it’s here, and that’s what told the prospectors that it was coming from somewhere upstream.”

Gold panning is pretty simple stuff, Sutton said, though it can take practice to get the technique down. She provided some pointers: First, scoop some sand from the riverbank into a gold pan, and dip the pan in the water. Give the pan a few gentle swirls to start separating the sediment, and toss out bigger rocks.

Next, go back and forth between swirling the pan — allowing water and sediment to splash out — and dipping it in the water to let lighter sediment float away.

Gold, being heavy, will stay at the bottom.

Gold, however, is not magnetic, so once the sediment is dry you can separate it from the magnetite with a refrigerator magnet.

IF YOU GO Western Welcome Week’s 24th annual Gold Panning on the Platte event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 10.

No registration is necessary for the free event, which will meet at Carson Nature Center in South Platte Park at 3000 West Carson Drive behind the Aspen Grove shopping center.

All ages are welcome. Drinking water will be provided, but no food. Participants are asked to wear water shoes — bare feet are not permitted in the river.

Participants get to take home any gold they find.

aren’t likely to find more than a few flakes, although one kid a few years ago found a beefy gold nugget, Sutton said.

The point of the activity isn’t to strike it rich, Sutton said, but to learn a new family-friendly way to enjoy South Platte Park’s beautiful stretch of the Platte.

“It’s a wonderful way to connect with nature,” Sutton said.

“This is one of my favorite events,” Hathaway said. “It’s truly a community celebration because you get all ages and all generations out there having a lot of fun.”

eing a Colorado native, I am used to hearing about the effects of the high altitude.

It doesn’t matter if it is baseball, golf, tennis, football, basketball or any event you choose, because there will probably be some mention about the impact of the altitude.

OVERTIME The National Hot Rod Association came to Bandimere Speedway for the Mile High Nationals on July 19-21, and naturally the altitude forced adjustments that both the crews and drivers had to take into Jim Benton consideration.

Many teams only use parts specifically for Bandimere. Crews have to deal with tuning, blower and piston changes, and the parachutes work but react different than at sea level.

Drivers also have to adapt.

“Everybody did their job and the car was flawless,” he said. “This has been the only track I’ve been able to win at the past two years.

“It’s a neat challenge to come here. People don’t understand what you have to do with these great cars to perform at Bandimere.

“They are not built for racing here. We build these race cars for 1,400, 1,500 horsepower. The driver, because of the fact you lose 300 horsepower, you have to jam all kinds of gear ratios into the car to make it think it has more power.

It makes a tough challenge for a driver and it takes three or four runs to get the driver in sync.”

Littleton golf editor David Jacobson is a Littleton golfer who can be found playing on

courses in the area and he also is the editor of the book “Nine Holes of Golf ” by Royal Cortissoz — a renowned architect, art critic and author of the first half of the 20th century.

“I believe the book will be of special interest to Denver suburban readers,” said Jacobson.

The book is a series of essays written by Cortissoz in 1922.

An event later this month offers a chance to have fun while supporting a worthy cause.

Relay For Life of South Metro Denver is coming up on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 5-10 p.m. at Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch, 3270 Redstone Park Circle. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the event honors survivors and loved ones lost to cancer and raises money for cancer research.

As of July 23, $28,036 had been collected.

The festival-like experience has an activity for everyone: a kickboxing demo, zumba class, life-sized yard games, a DJ, a kid-friendly obstacle course and more.

The day closes with a luminaria ceremony, where small paper bags honoring loved ones lost are released into the night sky.

“Each light represents a life — a life G taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or support for a person still fighting the disease,” said Janet Corona, of Aurora, a cancer survivor in remission who is helping coordinate the relay. “It’s a powerful demonstration that gives people the opportunity to grieve but also offers comfort and hope.”

The decades-old tradition was started by Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt, who walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising money to help the American Cancer Society with the nation’s biggest health concern: cancer. Today W the race takes place annually in communities across the country, to date raising nearly $5 billion for cancer research.
