My background I am originally from Atlanta. I own the Chick-fil-A location that is opening at Aspen Grove this month. I have already been a Chick-fil-A franchisee for eight years, owning the location near C-470 and Kipling Parkway. My husband, Brad, and I met while we were both attending the University of Georgia. After we graduated, we moved out to Colorado. Living here was a dream for us and we wanted to build a future here. We moved to Littleton 12 years ago and bought a home.

Why Chick-fil-A? I interned at the Chick-fil-A home office public relations and marketing department while I in college and I fell in love with the brand. I spent a lot of time that summer in restaurants and with Chick-filA founder Truett Cathy. I was selected for the first franschise, and I was excited to have the opportunity to own my own business as well as to create my own culture and vision while stewarding the brand.

County takes grant applications Arapahoe County nonprofits can apply for the county’s 2018 Aid to Agencies grants from now until 4:30 p.m. on June 9.

The Board of County Commissioners is seeking grant applications from human services, health and wellness and crisis intervention agencies for $1.68 million in funding. Grants will be awarded to selected non-profit

501(c)(3) or 501(c) organizations serving Arapahoe County’s at-risk and underserved populations. Funds cannot be used for religious or political purposes.

Housing advocate honored for long service to agency Libby Bortz leaving board after 46 years with South Metro Housing Options

“She was there when we needed a conscience,” said Dan Burnham, executive director of South Metro Housing Options, as he thanked retiring board member Libby Bortz for her 46 years of service to the organization — and to Littleton.

Despite controversy, she was always supportive, and showed integrity and passion as “a mentor to a lot of people,” he continued.

On April 18, a large number of local colleagues and friends gathered at the Inn at Hudson Gardens to celebrate Libby Bortz and her continued effort to make Littleton a better place to live — for everyone.

The agency now owns and manages about 600 units: apartments, an assisted living facility and single homes for low- and moderate-income residents. (The waiting list is very long.)

Andrew Hancock of First Bank, chair of the board, talked about 1971, when the housing organization started at Bortz’s urging and the average housing price was $20,500 in Littleton. In 2005, he said with a grin,

the bank controlled Littleton Tax Credit on the Libby Bortz Assisted Living Center — “For a time, we actually owned Libby Bortz!” He also recalled a board discussion of a 200page document about federal regulations, which he doubted anyone had read in detail. Libby said, “Please turn to the bottom of page 96.” She did not think we should sign because of a phrase there. “Things need to be correct. Nothing is above question.”

Hancock also noted Bortz’s ongoing concern about women’s rights.

At this point, Bortz was presented with a silver engraved tray from the board and organization.

She then stepped to the lectern to recall her journey and look to the

future. She thanked her children for giving up time with her and said them their lives were actually threatened at one time, which she’d never told them. She recalled being at a Littleton church about a human rights issue and receiving a bomb threat. “You do what’s right,” she concluded.

In 1971, none of the Denver suburbs had a low-cost housing program. The Littleton Council for Human Relations had been formed to better inter-racial, inter-religious connections. The organization did a community survey and collaborated with the late Maida Navis, who started the InterFaith Task Force, to provide some low-cost housing.

“We got an OK from HUD for Littleton’s first senior housing — Bradley House (during the Nixon administration), and suddenly, there was a pull-back on funding. There was a senior protest demonstration at the HUD building in Denver …” She and others arranged for buses to get people downtown. “HUD locally had not been helpful … There was a demonstration on the Bradley House property … We did get our allocation back!”

She laughed as she recalled the angry HUD director’s comment: “You’ll never get into the men’s locker room at the YMCA.” Her reply: “That’s never been my goal!”

Five years of effort got an assisted living facility built, which was named for this advocate. She is still concerned about the future. “The assisted living center has people late in life who need a memory care facility — it’s more difficult to move into a different facility ... Ask your pastor, minister, rabbi to help ask for such a facility. It’s fairly expensive …”

Teary, she thanked her community “for the opportunity I was given.”

Speakers with upbeat memories also included Dawn Sheppard, former executive director, former city councilman Carle Zimmerman, who was there when the authority was started; and Charlie Blosten, retired longtime City of Littleton staff member.

Construction defects compromise passes House Bill requires majority approval for HOA to sue, avoids arbitration requirement

A construction defects bill introduced as a bipartisan compromise passed the Colorado House of Representatives unanimously on April 24 and was sent to the Senate Business,

Labor and Technology Committee.

House Bill 1279, introduced last month, would require the approval of a majority of members of a homeowners association to approve a lawsuit against a contractor. It would also require HOA boards to disclose projected costs of proposed litigation to members and call a meeting at which the executive board and the developer or builder would have an opportunity to present arguments.

“A lot of hard work went into making a bill that was truly bipartisan,” said Assistant Majority Leader Alec Garnett, D-Denver, a sponsor of the

legislation. “This bill will help us achieve a better balance in Colorado’s housing construction market.”

Supporters of construction defects reform say that lawsuits have prevented attainably-priced condominiums from being built in the state, pricing people out of homeownership and in turn driving up rental prices.

“It changes how lawsuits are initiated,” said Sen. Jack Tate, R-Centennial, who is sponsoring the bill in the Senate.

The bill is also sponsored by Assistant Minority Leader Cole Wist,

R-Centennial, House Speaker Crisanta Dura, D-Denver, and Rep. Lori Saine, R-Firestone. It was introduced shortly after another defects bill was killed in a House committee after being approved by the Senate. That bill, Senate Bill 156, was similar to HB 1279 but would have also required HOAs to enter into third-party arbitration with builders before filing suit.

In addition to Tate, the bill is sponsored in the Senate by Minority Leader Lucia Guzman, D-Denver.

“It most certainly will pass the Senate,” Tate said.

Interim Littleton city manager considered for permanent role

With Littleton going through its second round of recruiting city manager candidates, some members of city council want to offer the job to interim manager Mark Relph.

Relph, the city’s public works director, has been the interim city manager since last July, a role he stepped into after former city Relph manager Michael Penny was ousted by the council

ary after four candidates came to Littleton to interview and none were selected.

Though Waters & Company Executive Recruitment, a Texasbased firm contracted by the city in October to find candidates, has found a second batch of potential managers, Councilmember Doug Clark said at a study session on April 25 that he would like to forego the rest of the process and offer the job to Relph.

“I’ve seen him in action for 10 months,” Clark said. “I think he has integrity, I think he understands the role with the council.”

Clark is joined in wanting Relph for the position by Councilmember Peggy Cole, and Councilmember Jerry Valdes and Mayor Bruce Beckman also said they would support Relph.

Councilmembers Debbie Brinkman and Bill Hopping said that they want to go forward with selecting finalists from the candidates Waters & Company has recruited, with Hopping noting several candidates that he felt were highly qualified for the role. Councilmember Phil Cernanec was absent from the study session.

Relph joined the city as public works director in 2015. He previously worked in similar roles in Grand Junction and in Shoreline, Washington.

Doug Clark, Littleton councilmember in June. However, he did not apply for the permanent city manager position at first due to a mistaken belief that the city charter required the manager to live within the city limits, having recently built a new house in Golden. And during this

second round, he recently withdrew an application that he had submitted for the post.

Relph said he is still interested in the role and only withdrew his application because of concerns about taking part in a competitive hiring process, and, if not chosen, having to form a working relationship with the person chosen instead of him.

“I definitely want to be the city manager,” he said. “I think I have a lot to bring to the city and the council.”

Littleton man made history with escape from aircraft Norm Sothan’s plane flipped from carrier deck into Pacific

On March 22, 1957, 27-year-old San Diego-based Navy pilot Norm Sothan had made four of six required practice landings on the deck of the carrier USS Essex when the brakes in his F4D Skyray supersonic jet fighter plane failed. He skidded toward the edge as he was headed for the catapult to fly again. Fortunately, a wing caught and flipped him upside down as he went into the Pacific Ocean.

He was able to get the clamshell canopy open and eject from his seat into the water. If he had been right side up, pressure from the water would have held that canopy door closed, as it was then designed (by Douglas Aircraft) and he would have drowned. He says he was dazed and didn’t remember the ejection as he emerged 75 feet underwater, but got free of the seat and the aircraft and swam to the surface where he was soon scooped up by a helicopter.

The base commander’s wife called his young wife, Jan and said, “Your husband got a little wet today.”

The incident was kept secret at first and Sothan wasn’t notified in June when the story was released nationwide. “My father heard about it on the Arthur Godfrey television show,” said Jan. Other relatives and friends picked up the news in papers across the country.

Jan has kept a large family scrapbook with several pages of 1957 clippings interspersed with photos of the sleek plane — followed by pictures of four growing children who joined the Sothan family.

Norm Sothan, who says he remem-

bers wanting to be a Navy aviator since his Nebraska childhood, spent 26 years in the Navy after graduating from the University of Nebraska.

He went to Korea, spent a year on a destroyer, then went into flight training. He says he was in several more squadrons and was “most proud to command a squadron.”

He then was sent to the Pentagon as a naval liason, where he “learned the workings of Congress.”

And he got acquainted with Bill Armstrong from Colorado. Following his service, he went to work for Armstrong, helping with his first election to Congress. He has continued interest in the military and has assisted on committees for academy appointments.

The Littleton couple, who married in 1953, proudly count four children, 11 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren, plus one on the way.

The met at the University of Nebraska, Jan says, “when we were dancing in a `Girl Crazy’ musical.” Their home is filled with memories as they contemplate the 60th anniversary of Norm’s narrow escape.

Indoor rock-climbing gym scheduled to open in Englewood in 2018 Earth Treks leases space on site of old Sports Authority headquarters

Earth Treks plans to build the largest indoor rock gym in the country in one of the former Sports Authority headquarters buildings in Englewood.

“We have leased 52,000 square feet of space and plans are to begin construction in August. Our goal is to open by about the middle of 2018,” said Chris Jenkins, Earth Trek chief operating officer, said. “The ceilings are high enough to construct the boulder climbing wall but we plan to raise the roof to accommodate the rope climbing wall.”

He said the facility will be similar to the company’s facility in Golden, only larger.

“The Golden facility is 29,000 square feet,” Jenkins said. “Like Golden, the Englewood facility will have the climbing walls, locker rooms and a fit-

ness center. There will also be a yoga center. We plan to offer a new service at Englewood by offering child care for customers.”

Brad Power, Englewood community development director, said the announcement is good news for the community.

“We knew the new property owners were looking at the climbing facility and we are glad to see that worked out for them,” he said. “This will be a great business for that location. We expect it will bring a lot of people to the climbing facility and that will be a plus for the business as well as the other businesses in the area.”

He said the announcement will hopefully spur more interest in the remainder of the former Sports Authority headquarters site. He said the it is unlikely that the owner will attract tenants providing the same number of jobs as Sports Authority once had.

But the proposed climbing gym is expected to generate a lot of activity, as the Earth Treks facility in Golden is slightly more than half the size of the new site and about 1,000 people a day visit the Golden facility.

Power said the new climbing facil-

ity is expected to draw people from around the metro area, and he expects it will put the site on the map.

Jenkins explained the climbing walls called “bouldering” are about 15 feet high with hand holds on the routes. Climbers don’t need to be attached to safety ropes. He stressed that the climbing walls will be designed specifically for the new facility.

The Golden facility offers 300 rope routes and about 100 boulder challenges. There will be more routes and challenges on the Englewood walls.

The taller climbing challenges are called “rope walls.” In Englewood the rope wall will be about 45 feet high, so climbers must be attached to a safety rope to prevent injury in case of a fall.

The Earth Treks facility will occupy 52,000 square feet of the 92,000-squarefoot building at the south end of the location, at the corner of Kenyon Avenue and Jason Street. No information is available yet on possible tenants for the remainder of the building.

A second building, covering 118,000 square feet on the north end of the lot and facing Hampden Avenue, is also being leased, with an indoor storage facility shaping up as a tenant for part

of the building and no information available for the rest of the space.

Earth Treks was founded in 1998 by famous climber Chris Warner, who currently is in Nepal.

The first Earth Treks indoor facility was opened in Columbia, Maryland, in 1997. There are now three facilities in Maryland and Virginia, and the Golden facility opened in 2013.

West Hampden Investors owns the two buildings on the Englewood site and the large adjacent parking lot.

The property was developed to its current configuration in 1994 and the site was leased to Gart Brothers Sports in 2001. Sports Authority bought out Gart Brothers in 2003 and made the Jason Street site corporate headquarters.

In March 2016, Sports Authority cited debts of $1.1 billion as the reason it declared bankruptcy.

The bankruptcy court ordered liquidation of all stock and fixtures at the more than 100 stores around country.

In June the company began closing its headquarters and eliminated 461 jobs. Portions of the headquarters were used longer and were finally closed down in December.

The Littleton Independent took home the Editorial Sweepstakes award at the recent Colorado Press Association convention. The award was given for posting the best performance in the editorial category among mid-size weekly newspapers in the association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest.

The Independent is one of 18 weekly papers in the Colorado Community Media family. Overall, CCM received 48 awards at the annual convention in Lakewood on April 22.

In Class 3, the Independent won a total of nine awards, including five first-place honors.

Campaign’s goal: Let’s talk about mental illness Tri-County Health spearheads metrowide campaign to battle stigma

It’s time to talk about mental health.

That’s according to Tri-County Health Department, which this month launched a campaign across the Denver metro area created by a coalition of public and private organizations designed to help people have open, honest discussions about mental health.

“Let’s Talk Colorado” will mostly operate through online, public health and workplace platforms, said Mon-

ica Younger, the behavioral health coordinator at Tri-County, which serves Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

“The idea started years ago. Community members identified mental health as being a very serious public health concern and they asked us as public health to work on the issues,” she said. “Anybody can be affected by mental health concerns.”

The campaign includes partners from throughout the Tri-County area but also beyond, including organizations in Jefferson County, Denver, Aurora and Boulder.

People can expect to see campaign materials in the waiting room at their health care provider, or perhaps through information provided by their place of work. There’s also a website, LetsTalkCO.org, with downloadable tools concerning mental

health discussions.

“The Let’s Talk key messages are, number one, acknowledging that starting the conversation is difficult,” Younger said. “It’s a difficult thing to talk about, but having that conversation can save someone’s life.”

They also hope the campaign will fight any stigma around mental health issues by providing statistics showing the commonality of mental health concerns.

“If you know that in a room of eight people, two of them are struggling with mental health issues, that helps defeat stigma,” she said.

Professional, personal connection For Keith Peterson, director of community benefits at University of Colorado Hospital, collaborating on the campaign wasn’t just professional.

Peterson, of Denver, has a son who struggles with bipolar disorder. Peterson and his wife, Michelle, identified their son’s condition when he was a young adult still living at home.

It all started with a messy room.

Their son, also named Keith, had always been a “difficult personality,” Peterson said, but for years the family didn’t realize a more serious problem was at hand.

If someone were to socialize with his son they would never know something was amiss, Peterson said, rattling off the traits that make his son wonderful. His son is brilliant, he said, passionate and with a strong sense of right and wrong.

Now? Stores we grew up with are dropping one after the other. I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but we all know the reasons why.

Money reported, “It’s possible more than 8,600 brick-and-mortar stores will close their doors in 2017.”

I haven’t been to a mall store in over 10 years. I can’t remember when.

Grocery stores, box hardware stores, art

supply stores, and that’s about it.

I think if I could get my teeth cleaned on Amazon, I would.

In my coursework even then, we explored different media perspectives and I particularly devoured a book called “News: A Consumer’s Guide.”

Often, real-time as-it-happens news is wrong primarily because it’s incomplete. ith the springtime officially upon us and trees, shrubs, and flowers all taking root, it has inspired me to share with you some thoughts that run through my mind WINNING as I watch springtime WORDS come into full bloom.

And it’s not just watching the flowers and trees blossom and bloom, it’s also the Michael Norton smell of spring that gets to me too. Now for my fellow allergy sufferers, sometimes it can be a little problematic for us, but for me I still enjoy the scent of spring whether it is the sweet smell of rain or the beautiful air and landscape filled with flowers.

It is such a stark contrast to, and yet also a welcomed balance to, the increase in tensions driven by crime, the addiction epidemic, wars and politics. Passing by nurseries and homes

and communities already abundant with the signs of flowering life, I found myself thinking about a saying I had once read, “Bloom where you are planted.”

The successful growth all depends on the health of the roots, proper care like water and sunlight, and more than likely a green thumb. I settled in on thinking about the roots — I thought about the fact that we need to be rooted in love as individuals, families, and communities.

If you are a frequent reader of this column you F will catch on pretty quickly that you have read the following phrases in previous columns, but reinforcement of positive and affirming thoughts can never hurt.

So imagine if you will that there are four roots.

The first root is love and forgiveness. When we are firmly planted and rooted in love and forgiveness we can face most challenges and obstacles that get in our way personally, professionally, spiritually or emotionally.

forgiveness provide us with a freedom and strength that cannot be swayed or compromised by anger, grudges or negativity.

The second root is the root of love and kindness. We all know the saying, “What comes around goes around,” or “As you sow, so shall you reap.” Well, if we believe in this philosophy, we should be pouring out love and kindness on every single person we meet and in every single situation that we encounter. The root of love and kindness flourishes and multiplies faster than any of the other roots. You can easily test this theory yourself by committing to living a life filled with love and kindness for the next 30 days. Watch as the root responds with bringing even more love and kindness into your own world.

The third root is the root of love and happiness. It is so easy to find the bad things in life when we are looking for them. But it is just as easy to find the good if that is what we are looking for. And when we look for the good through the lens of love and happiness we will find the good people, the good things, the good places and the abundance of goodness that comes with a life filled with love and happiness, and we will find joy.

What we as informed media consumers need to guard against is the genuine fake news, perpetuated with innuendo and unfounded theories, and often written and planted for publication with full knowledge that it’s simply not true (which you won’t find in reputable publications online or in print, such as in these pages).

But, I hear some of you ask, how do I know what is a reputable publication? One way is to acquire media and information literacy (MIL). Yes, this is a real thing too — “Media and Information Literacy: Reinforcing Human Rights, Countering Radicalization and Extremism,” as reported in a publication of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the UN Alliance for Civilizations, and the Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy.

Of the five MIL laws, I particularly gravitate to Laws 1, 3 and 5. Law 1 states that information, communication, libraries, media, technology, the internet and other forms of information providers are for use in critical civic engagement, and that they are equal in stature. None is more relevant that the other. So, basically, 140 characters shot off in

Some of you may recall the other sayings where they say something is the root of all evil, such as money is the root of all evil or greed is the root of all evil. And if we are not careful and if we don’t tend to the care of the roots of love and forgiveness, love and kindness, love and happiness, and love and gratitude, something evil could creep in and compromise our growth and weaken that place where we hope to be so firmly rooted, love.

We all know — or should know — Law 3, which reminds us that information, knowledge, and messages are not always value neutral, or always independent of biases. We do naturally gravitate to news outlets that support our own cognitive biases, and thus tend to believe even the most outlandish statements from the side with which we agree. So for true media and information literacy, I recommend checking out a section in the New York Times that presents reporting and opinion from both ends of the political spectrum.

It never hurts to be informed, which leads me to Law 5: Media and information literacy is not acquired all at once. It is a lived and dynamic experience, a process that serves us well as we wend our ways tvhrough the glut of too-soon, too-raw and toowrong information that bombards us daily.

We can swallow what we are fed, or we can use our intellect, our intuition and our informed decisionmaking to select a credible, authentic and reputable diet of news.

Kenneth Julius Haraldsen 12/4/22 – 4/21/17

Kenneth Julius Haraldsen, the son of Norwegian immigrants, died on April 21, 2017 in Centennial, CO. He was born on December 4, 1922 in a sod house near Buffalo, SD to Knut Haraldsen and Jennie Alette Olstad Amundsen Haraldsen.

Ken was the middle of nine children.

Ken graduated from Harding County High School in Buffalo, SD in 1941.

In November 1942, Ken enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He served with the 8th Army Air Corp in England until being transferred to the 106th Infantry to fight in the Battle of the Bulge at the Battle of the Ardennes Forrest in Belgium. He was also a warden for a German POW camp on the Rhine River in Germany.

After the war, Ken joined the Air Force Reserves, retiring after 42 years in the service. He married Opal Gertrude Warner on February 24, 1946 in Buffalo, SD and had four daughters.

Ken studied at the Central Bible Institute in Springfield, MO, obtaining two bachelor degrees in the Bible and Theology in 1954 through the G.I. Bill.

He worked for the U.S. Post Office for 27 RATAJCZYK

years, was a Reserve Police Officer and a Chaplain in the Civil Air Patrol. Ken enjoyed writing Cowboy Poetry and playing the harmonica. He served as the Sunday School Superintendent at Amazing Grace Church, was a member of the Englewood Lions Club, American Legion 8th Air Force Association, Police Volunteers and the Election Commission with the City of Englewood, CO. In 2007 he received the 9 Who Care Award from 9News. In 2013 Ken was the Grand Marshall of the Sheridan Parade. Ken and Opal have resided in Englewood since 1955.

Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Opal, who passed in 2011. Survivors include his children, Elva R. Sitler of Englewood, CO, Joy M. Schoor of garden City, KS, Marlita S. Haraldsen of Englewood, CO and Nancy G . Wentz of Denver, CO; 6 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; one brother, Erling Haraldsen of Salem, OR; three sisters, Ruth Bachman of Cavaliar, ND, Sophie Loftsgard of Hoople, ND and Alice Schaler of Tualatin, OR and many nieces and nephews.

Ann Willson Ratajczyk Oct. 12, 1962 - April 24, 2017

Ann Willson Ratajczyk went to be with God and her mother on April 24, 2017. Ann is survived by her beloved daughter Tori (Victoria Ratajczyk, a sophomore student at the University of Northern Colorado), her father Richard Coale Willson Jr., her brother Richard Coale Willson III and his children James, Max and Anna Willson, as well as her partner David Sluiter.

Ann was born October 12, 1962 in Chestnut Hill Hospital, Philadelphia, and moved in 1964 to Bow Mar, Littleton, CO where she attended Centennial Elementary School, Goddard Middle School and Littleton High School. She graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Psychology in 1985. She was then a manager of Limited stores, winning several national awards. One issue of the company newsletter said: “It just wouldn’t be a competition without Ann”. Ann received certification from Denver Paralegal, and served as bailiff in the Denver courts. She joined Ireland, Stapleton, Pryor and Pascoe

and worked there for over 20 years until her death, specializing in trademark, bankruptcy and cannabis law. She also served on the Boards of the Summit Ridge HOA and the Foothills Parks and Recreation District, on a mission trip to build houses in Mexico, and in fundraising for a Servants Tour mission.

Raised in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Littleton, Ann joined Abiding Hope Church in Littleton which will host her memorial service at noon on May 6, and also attended First United Methodist of Church of Lafayette, where she and Dave sang in the choir. Ann’s wit, intelligence and good humor will be sadly missed by her many friends and professional colleagues. Always kind and considerate, she never wanted to be a burden to anyone.

Transportation funding proposal veers into ditch

Senate Republicans reject idea of letting voters decide on sales tax STAFF REPORT

A bill that would have asked Colorado voters to approve a sales tax increase to help fund billions of dollars in transportation projects has been rejected by Republicans in the state Senate.

But the Democratic speaker of the House is optimistic the nearly twomonth discussion surrounding House Bill 1242 will be good for the state in

the long run. The state transportation system faces a $1 billion per year funding shortfall, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

“While I am disappointed by today’s outcome,” said Crisanta Duran, D-Denver, “I am hopeful that House Bill 1242 has started a conversation Duran that must continue if we are going to have a transportation system that keeps us out of traffic jams and helps Colorado businesses generate jobs for our people.”

The bill was defeated by a 3-2 vote in a Senate committee on April 25. If it had been approved at the Capitol and

then passed by voters in November, it would have raised the state sales tax from 2.9 percent to 3.4 percent from 2018 through 2037.

State Sen. Jack Tate, RCentennial, is one of the three Republicans who voted down the measure in the Senate Finance Smallwood Committee.

He said the state should exhaust other options before raising taxes and called HB 1242 “kind of a bait-andswitch,” saying very little of the money would have gone to the I-25 corridor.

State Sen. Jim Smallwood, R-Parker, said he wasn’t surprised to see the bill’s demise.

“Although I feel strongly that funding for roads and bridges needs to be a top priority in Colorado, I would not have voted to increase the sales tax in our state,” he said. “New demands on the taxpayer aren’t the solution.”

But state Sen. Rachel Zenzinger, D-Arvada, called it a “sad day for Colorado.”

“As Sen. Nancy Todd and I noted in the Transportation Committee, Coloradans have a right to vote on whether to approve funding to fill potholes in roads and fix crumbling bridges,” she said. “This was the time. If not now, when?”

Lawmakers are working on other transportation-funding measures as time runs out on the legislative session, which adjourns May 10.

Kombucha taps the Colorado market The fermented tea is becoming a healthy drink alternative

A

fter brewing kombucha in his kitchen for several years, Castle Rock resident Marc Gaudreault decided to turn his product into a commercial business.

One year ago, he founded TruBucha, a kombrewery operating out of a commercial kitchen in Denver. He peddled his product at local farmers markets and his customer base grew each week.

“Most people either love it or hate it,” Gaudreault said of kombucha, a lightly fermented tea full of probiotics. “I always liked the taste of it — the zingyness.”

Gaudreault originally started drinking kombucha as an alternative to soda and said he feels healthier doing so.

Kombucha is packed with B-vitamins, antioxidants, active enzymes, glucaronic acids and amino acids according to Gaudreault, which he says helps the body feel more balanced.

“Our view is that if your body is more balanced, then you will naturally fight off diseases,” Gaudreault said.

The healthy properties of kombucha is what drew Marnie Quinn, owner of Ceremony Center for Healing in Westminster to the drink.

Her center, which opened nine months ago, offers yoga, tai chi and meditation classes along with workshops centered around health, empowerment and spirituality. The center also offers kombucha from Happy Leaf in Edgewater on tap.

“I love that it’s a probiotic and supports gut health,” Quinn said, adding that the gut is the center of health.

Having kombucha available after class also serves the purpose of creating community.

“One thing we’ve done since humans have been around is sharing a drink together and it’s nice to have the option of sharing a drink that also supports your health,” Quinn said.

The taproom Sharing in community is one of the ideas behind the kombucha taproom.

TruBucha plans to open a taproom in Lone Tree this summer.

“Kombucha is a big business and it’s going to be getting bigger,” Gaudreault said. “We just want a place where people can sit down and talk.”

Until its own taproom opens in June, one place TruBucha can be found is at American Cultures in the Denver Highlands.

American Cultures is a kombucha taproom serving a rotation of Colorado-brewed kombucha. What makes American Cultures different is they only serve kombucha, they don’t make their own.

The taproom, which was founded in 2015, gives people the opportunity to taste all of the local kombucha that Colorado has to offer, and take it home in reusable growlers instead of buying it in stores by the single serving.

For a sweet twist, they also serve kombucha floats made with local Sweet Action and Scrumptious ice cream.

But first to get in the kombucha game in the Denver area was Happy Leaf Kombucha, which opened the first Denver kombucha taproom in RiNo in 2013. In 2016, the taproom moved to Edgewater near Sloan’s Lake. Like TruBucha, Happy Leaf ’s humble beginnings started with selling their kombucha at farmer’s markets.

Now, the Happy Leaf brand can be found on tap at more than 100 Denverarea craft breweries, coffee shops and restaurants.

One brewery in Arvada took the concept of kombucha and beer together a bit further.

New Image Brewing is one of the first breweries in the world making a beer that is brewed with kombucha, said Brandon Capps, co-owner and brewer at New Image.

The brew came up when Capps was looking for a unique way to make a sour beer.

The brewing process, Capps said, is complex. The entire beer is unpasteurized and the kombucha is unpasteurized.

“It’s fully live cultures and it can age with time and become super complex,” Capps said.

‘Eye of the Camera’ winners show their works at Littleton Museum

More than 50 years ago, the Littleton Fine Art Board invited Colorado photographers to exhibit their work in a juried show called “Through the Eye of the Camera,” which drew a collection of black-and-white and color images shot on film and, in many cases, developed in home darkrooms. The popular show draws many more entries today, largely by owners of digital cameras, and awards are given for Best of Show in black-and-white, color and through

In addition to a cash award, Best of Show winners are invited to mount a joint exhibit the following year at the Littleton Museum.

The 2016 winners — Chuck Rasco, Jim Sidinger and Steve Hirsch — opened their exhibit on April 21 at the Littleton Museum and it will run through May 28 during museum hours.

Exhibit curator Kevin Oehler arranged each artist’s works separately in the gallery, which gives a visitor a better picture of how each artist views his world than if they were mixed. All three share thoughtful, clear images, while reflecting different personalities.

Chuck Rasco won Best of Show for Color and his images, many exuber-

ant, give his perspective.

Jim Sidinger’s silver gelatin blackand-white images are precise and spare, deleting “incidental clutter” which he finds distracting.

Steve Hirsch, Black-and-White winner, comes from an advertising background and is especially drawn to images of abandoned places and the landscapes around them, across the country.

Camera buffs will enjoy contemplating how these images were created and other visitors will just have fun with the variety of images included by three talented artists.

Artist will make regular visits to work in Englewood museum

The project began with letters to friends and former students, inviting collaboration between painter Craig Marshall Smith and friends and former students — to be followed by an exhibit at the Museum Outdoor Arts (known as the MOA) in Englewood from January to April 2018.

Smith suggested diptychs on canvas or panels, with overlapping work. …Variations are to be expected, one would imagine, given the diverse skills of the artists involved.

(Each is also invited to include a small self-portrait, to be shown with the artwork.)

Smith, who lives in Highlands Ranch (and writes a weekly column for Colorado Community Media) is a retired Metro State University art professor. He has been periodically involved with the MOA since a residency in 2003 and his larger-than-life painting of a horse, “Rodger,” greets visitors at the top of the stairway from the first floor to the secondfloor level of the MOA in the Englewood Civic Center.

On April 15, metro-area crew members met for lunch and conversation at the MOA, toured the facility and talked informally about future plans.

Smith will be Artist in Residence from mid-August through December at the Museum Outdoor Arts, where a spacious studio invites creative interactions and a supportive museum staff is available.

During this period, he will meet individually with the Denver-area artists and probably ship works back and forth with three out-oftown colleagues. “Bring music to play,” he said.

An intern, to be named, will join the project and one person from the original list has withdrawn, with a replacement to be announced. Smith expects to be at the studio every Tuesday and some Wednesdays and Thursdays, where he will paint, interact with group members and talk with visitors.

Metro-area artists include: former Metro State University Denver students Heidi Jung and Daniel House Kelly and friends John McEnroe, Sharon Feder, Mark Friday, Deborah Jang and Jennifer Meyerose. In Los Angeles, graphic artists James Robie and Gretchen Goetz will participate and Greg Watts, former MSUD art chair, now Dean of the College of Visual Arts and Design at University of North Texas, will be involved. (Smith also lists the late artist Richard Diebenkorn, his professor for his MFA work at UCLA.)

This season’s Continental League baseball race could be described as topsy-turvy and unpredictable.

After games on April 26, there were three teams tied for first place, one team a half game off the pace and three other teams a game off the lead. That’s eight of the league’s 11 teams still contending for the title or first division

finishes.

ThunderRidge temporarily moved into a first-place tie with a 6-4 victory over Heritage on April 26 at the Eagles’ Randy Campbell Memorial Field.

“It’s a crazy league,” said ThunderRidge coach Joe White. “We played the last year’s state champions from Nevada in our first game of the year down in Phoenix, we played some Phoenix teams and played Broomfield. There is nothing like this league. Every game you have to come play or you will get beat. It’s great baseball.”

Heritage coach Scott Hormann agreed.

“It’s ridiculous,” he said. “Every single team in this league is good.

Castle View is a really, really good

baseball team and they’ve lost six in row. I truly believe our league is the best league in the state. When you don’t make plays, you are going to get beat. The goal has to be to win two out of three games every week.”

All league teams except Mountain Vista and Heritage moved April 28 games up to April 27 to avoid a pending storm.

And Castle View beat ThunderRidge 3-2 as the league standings continued to scramble.

fter watching Jordan Remley hit a precise approach shot toward the 18th green at Broken Tee Englewood to finish a 3-under-par round of 69, I assumed I was observing a young lady OVERTIME who had been swinging a golf club since shortly after the day she learned to walk.

However, I discovered that Remley is not one of those athletes who specialized in one sport while growing up.

“I’ve been playing sports Jim Benton since I was 4 years old, and one day I was coming out with my dad and I ask, `Can I hit your driver?’ ” the Ralston Valley senior said. “It was a real calm day with no wind and I just piped it down the middle.”

Remley, who has signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Wyoming, has developed into one of the state’s best golfers heading into the May 8 state-qualifying regional tournament.

“I only started playing golf my freshman year, so this is my fourth year of golf,” she said. “I’ve never shot over a 100. I’d say golf came pretty natural.”

Remley has taken a few lessons, including a week of instruction from renowned golf teacher Hank Haney.

Remley has won or tied for medalist honors in every Jefferson County League tournament this spring.

“Considering that she had six months of golf before starting her freshman year at Ralston Valley and now she is leading the state with consistent under-par rounds, I would consider that amazing,” Mustangs coach Wendy Davies said. “She is a great all-around young lady and athlete, she will continue to grow as she goes on to play at Wyoming, and I also hope to see her achieve her dream to be on the LPGA someday.”

Home-field advantage Highlands Ranch soccer coach Spencer Ward is catching flak for scheduling Falcons’ home games on the grass field at Highlands Ranch instead of the turf at Shea Stadium.

“I get a lot of coaches calling me up and saying, `Why can’t we go to Shea?’ ” he said. “They say, ‘Your field is bad.’ But if it was unplayable, my school would not let us play on it.”

Ward argues that it is hard to get students to drive to Shea to watch games and more do attend games played at the school.

He also said students and spectators get a closer view of the action on the field at Highlands Ranch than at Shea, Echo Park Automotive Stadium or Douglas County Stadium, where most Continental League games are held.

“He hit the house across the street. It went pretty far, 60 feet in the air for 300 feet.

“Then we got a couple guys on base after that and I got a 3-1 curve ball and I hit it to right center and scored two on that one. Then Tyson Cruickshank got a nice RBI to score me on the next at-bat. It was really important for us and ended up getting us a big inning.”

can lack tolerance and overreact when things don’t go his way.

His brilliance could backfire on him as a high school student. If a teacher taught something contrary to what his son had already researched, that meant a challenge his son couldn’t back down from.

And man, could his room get messy, Peterson said.

His son, then in his early 20s, was living back at home after leaving school and losing his job. They don’t know why

he lost his job, Peterson said, but he and his wife offered support and sometimes, the tough love they thought appropriate.

However, Peterson drew the line at his son’s messy room.

He was a dad first, Peterson said, and that room had to be cleaned. He confronted his son, only to hear something that both shocked and confused him.

“It’s not that bad,” Peterson recalled his son saying.

Peterson didn’t understand how he couldn’t see the mess.

At that point, Michelle suggested the issues ran deeper than just the typical problems faced by people in their 20s. At her encouragement, their son

was evaluated.

At nearly 24 years old, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

From then on, Peterson’s perspective on parenting his “difficult” son changed.

The impact of talking Peterson says the stigma surrounding mental health is very real, but not everyone with mental health conditions will handle it the same way.

Besides offering specific tips for having conversations about mental health, the Let’s Talk Colorado website includes a quiz for people to test whether they can spot mental health stigma.

Peterson’s son would likely

react to prejudice by brushing it off. It’s not his problem if people can’t accept his condition, Peterson’s son would say.

It’s their problem.

But through his experiences, Peterson is now talking about mental health, and having continued conversations with his son about how he’s doing.

Having someone to listen to is key for those struggling with mental health issue, Peterson said.

“My advice,” Peterson said, “is if you’re really serious about the Let’s Talk campaign, if you’re really serious about removing that stigma, than you’re going to have to be willing to actually hear
