Museum, library soldier on despite furloughs, closures Littleton facilities offer virtual services with dozens of employees on leave

When the City of Littleton announced it would furlough dozens of employees as the city reels from the financial blow of COVID-19 shutdowns, Bemis Public Library and the Littleton Museum took the brunt of the impact.

Targeting staff whose work couldn’t be done from home, City Manager Mark Relph announced on April 20 he would furlough 58 employees -- 45 of them from the library and museum.

“I had to take action to protect the city’s financial interest,” Relph said.

“It hurt. Our library and museum provide a unique level of service, and they’re beloved by residents and visitors alike.”

The majority of the staff furloughs are from the library, at : 37 were on the list, including 20 part-time substitute librarians, but also staff from childrens’ services, technical services and circulation. The museum has 60 employees total.

The cuts also included four out of five staff members from the Littleton Immigrant Resources Center, which helps legal immigrants with green

cards pursue full American citizenship. LIRC director Glaucia Rabello, the sole employee of the center not furloughed, was not immediately available for comment.

At the museum, 6028 S. Gallup St., eight were on the list, including three historical interpreters, who work the Smithsonian-accredited museum’s two 19th-century-style farms in period dress. Other cuts included custodians and weekend receptionists. The museum has 21 employees total.

Other staff furloughs included the drivers of the Omnibus and Shopping Cart, two city-run bus services that take seniors to medical appointments and errands. The remaining furloughs were administrative staff from city hall.

Relph said the furloughs will save the city about $150,000 between now and June 24, when they’re scheduled to end.

“It positions us to take the next set of necessary actions,” Relph said, though he declined to elaborate.

The city is facing a potential shortfall of $10 million-$13 million by the end of the year, Relph said, though the city’s reserve funds should allow it to spread cuts out over several years.

The furloughs are demoralizing, said Tim Nimz, who heads both the museum and library, but said he understood the decision.

“There are no visitors to greet, and it’s hard to interpret a closed museum,” Nimz said.

Still, remaining staff are finding ways to reach the public. Bemis Library is offering a slew of programs via video conferencing: senior social clubs, the “Active Minds” lecture series, book clubs, and even an ongoing Dungeons and Dragons game for teenagers.

The museum is finding ways to stay connected, too: in a variety of videos, interpreters are sharing pioneer-era recipes, touring the farms, and answering questions in the “Ask Farmer Steve” series. The museum is also offering a digital tour of its “Eye of the Camera” photography show.

“We’re trying to live up to the personal commitment our community has in us,” Nimz said. “Even if we can’t be with visitors, we can still interact with them.”

It’s too soon to say when the library

and museum can reopen, Nimz said, or what the terms would be.

“How do you maintain social distancing? What do you do with interactive programs at the museum?

How about high-touch items in the children’s area at the library? How do you make a jittery public comfortable to come back? How do we keep staff safe? There’s a lot to figure out,” Nimz said.

Relph, the city manager, said reopening the library and museum are currently lower priorities than other city facilities, like city hall and the municipal courthouse. All face similar considerations around cleanliness and social distancing.

“As difficult as it was to decide to close things,” Relph said, “It will be 10fold harder to figure out how to reopen things safely.”

Mental health providers see demand grow amid pandemic ‘It is a global crisis that we are all dealing with’

The coronavirus crisis has impacted mental health services across metro Denver in different ways.

One provider, AllHealth Network, with locations in Arapahoe and Douglas counties, has taken on hundreds of new clients amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s also seen an increase in pharmaceutical needs and expects that demand for treatment will continue rising.

Another, Community Reach Center in Westminster, reports a dip in the number of new clients it typically takes on, while also watching demand among its acute care services rise.

That’s left the center’s chief clinical officer afraid that community members are pushing off mental health treatment during the pandemic until they reach a crisis point.

Both organizations report seeing higher levels of loneliness, anxiety and depression within their communities. The COVID-19 pandemic is also unique, they said, in that it has affected people across the globe and across demographics.

“Historians and probably social scientists around the world are grappling with that right now,” said Abigail Tucker, chief clinical officer for Community Reach Center. “Something that is so unique to COVID is that it really is, other than I suppose perhaps climate change, it is a global crisis that we are all dealing with.”

The pandemic hasn’t caused fear about physical health, job security, and economic stability alone, Tucker said. It also created barriers to common coping mechanisms. Ways someone might usually relieve stress — eating at a favorite restaurant, visiting a friend — are harder or impossible amid the pandemic.

Cynthia Grant, chief clinical officer for AllHealth Network, based in the Centennial area, said the organization has seen nearly 500 new clients since the state’s stay-at-home order began.

The pharmacy department’s volume is up more than 30%.

“Demand for services is high and it’s continuing to go up,” she said. “Everything at the beginning was focused on medical and now we’re seeing a shift toward behavioral health. I really think this is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Staff delivered more than 6,400 therapy services in the past month, and the no-show rate among clients is sitting around 8%, a couple percentage points lower than usual, she said.

“Everyone shows up,” she said. “It’s a very captive audience.”

Roughly 71% of services are being delivered by telephone and 23% by video conference. Certain services are still available to in-person care, including AllHealth’s acute treatment unit, crisis stabilization unit, walk-in crisis center and medication services.

Similar programs are also available to in-person treatment at Community Reach Center.

Grant said she has heard anecdotally AllHealth is seeing “a lot of people who are” essential workers like restaurant staff, grocery store employees and people providing delivery services.

AllHealth typically serves 18,000 people a year and employs 200 clinical staff across 11 locations. It also has providers at south-metro schools and jails.

Community Reach Center serves numerous communities in the north metro, including Westminster, Thornton, Northglenn, Brighton, Broomfield and more.

The mental health center has largely transitioned to using Telehealth, a remote platform, during COVID. Early into the transition, the center saw clients spending roughly 20 minutes on sessions, Tucker said.

business activity, city officials are bracing for a 25% reduction in sales tax revenue over the next two quarters. The city furloughed 58 employees on April 20.

Relph told council the city will only begin to know the impact of the shutdowns on city finances in early May, when March tax revenue is tabulated. Tax revenue from April is expected to be even worse, and the city anticipates making far deeper cuts.

Councilmember Carol Fey reiterated her skepticism of the business grants, asking if giving away the money would prevent the city government from taking care of its own problems.

“What we don’t want to be doing is giving money to a business that is going to fail,” Fey said. “If they’re dependent on our $2,500 whether they fail or succeed, they’re on a really short lifeline.”

Councilmember Scott Melin pushed back against Fey. “Why else would you do a grant program?” Melin said. “If businesses are going to survive anyway, they don’t need our help ... Maybe $2,500 is enough to sustain them for a month or two in some critical aspect of their finances. I want those businesses supported by the grant program, not denied the grant because of that. It seems deeply ironic to me.”

The grants are part of a suite of efforts to assist businesses, said Stephens, the economic development director. Other efforts include promoting businesses still open through the crisis, and working with the city of Englewood to utilize tax breaks offered by a regional “enterprise zone.”

Relph said the magnitude of the city’s looming financial difficulties meant the grant program, in that context, was unlikely to put a harmful dent in city finances, and time is of the essence in assisting local businesses.

“This is reasonable to take on right now,” Relph said. “This policy issue can’t wait until June or July.”

Littleton Police case load falls; burglaries, car thefts rise

Littleton Police are filing far fewer case reports than normal for this time of year, but the number of reported burglaries and car thefts are up.

Littleton Police took 460 case reports between March 15 — roughly when shutdowns to prevent the spread of COVID-19 stepped up — and April 15, according to records provided by the department. That’s a 44% drop from the same period last year, when police took 825 case reports.

In the same time period, the department received 23 reports of burglaries this year, up from 13 last year. There were 18 reported car thefts in the same time period this year, up from 10 last year.

Littleton averaged 18 reported burglaries per month in 2018, the most recent year for which Colorado Bureau of Investigation data is available. Littleton averaged 16 car thefts a month in 2018 — double the rate just four years earlier in 2014.

Littleton Police spokesman Cmdr.

Trent Cooper asserted officers are patrolling just as often, and said there are even more officers on patrol than normal, because school resource officers have been reassigned to patrol while schools are closed.

Cooper said the plummeting calls for service are due to businesses being closed, and because the department has asked officers to minimize “self-

initiated work, in the interest of minimizing their unnecessary exposure to the public.”

LPD is asking the public to file as many reports as possible over the phone or online, Cooper said. Many employees, including detectives, are working from home.

“We don’t want to send message that we aren’t out there and it’s a free-forall,” Cooper said.

Cooper said it’s tough to draw conclusions from the burglary and car theft data because the numbers are small and can jump up or down from month to month. It would take a longer sample to draw conclusive trends, he said.

Cooper also said nine of the 23 burglary reports are from one selfstorage lot, at Windermere Street and Belleview Avenue, which has been repeatedly targeted by thieves. Cooper said the department’s special enforcement team is paying close attention to the lot, but doesn’t yet have suspect descriptions.

The department has halted speed traps to minimize officer contact with the public, Cooper said, but asserted that officers are still instructed to take action against “clear safety violations” like excessive speed or running red lights.

Though numbers weren’t immediately available, Cooper said the department is taking more mental health calls, and has handled a greater than average number of drug overdoses

and several suicides.

“People are stressed out, and they don’t feel in control,” Cooper said. “A lot of people are really struggling.”

So far, the department has not had any officers test positive for COVID-19, and the department is routinely decontaminating workspaces and patrol cars with help from

the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office.

The department has mutual aid agreements with other local police departments in case multiple officers fall sick at once.

“We want the community to know how much we appreciate their support,” Cooper said. “We’re here for you.”

Summer events: postponed or fate unknown Block Party, Fire Muster, Western Welcome Week face uncertainty

It’s shaping up to be a quiet summer in Littleton.

With efforts to contain COVID-19 expected to continue for months to come, Littleton’s summer festivals and events are largely postponed, canceled or up in the air.

The City of Littleton will not process event permit applications until further notice, said city spokesperson Kelli Narde, in keeping with Gov. Jared Polis’ order barring gatherings of more than 10 people.

The Littleton Block Party, summer’s unofficial beginning for many, will be postponed to an unknown future date, said organizer Greg Reinke.

“Right now, I have no clue,” said Reinke, who owns the Reinke Bros. costume shop in downtown Littleton.

Reinke canceled the event last year amid permit and cost disputes.

“We might do it in July, if they let us, or maybe in August, or we might just wait until next year,” he said.

Reinke said he’s taking the virus seriously, and it’s already touched his life — his brother came down with the disease, and spent much of April

“We’ve really got to be smart about reopening,” Reinke said.

Also the head of the Historic Downtown Littleton Merchants Association, Reinke touted a concept to close down Main Street to cars on certain summer evenings to allow for social-distance al fresco dining as a way to reinvigorate sales.

“Downtown will retrieve its glory,” he said.

Father’s Day in late June, the Fire Muster begins with a fire truck parade down Main Street, followed by an afternoon of fun and games with first responders at Arapahoe Community College.

The festival likely won’t happen this year, said Paula Wiens, who has organized the event for many years with Schomp Automotive and Mile High Hook and Ladder, a club for antique fire truck enthusiasts.

“There are just so many unknowns,” Wiens said.

One idea, hatched by Division Chief Jerry Rhodes of South Metro Fire Rescue, is to hold a parade in the fall to celebrate first responders and health care workers.

“If we could make it happen, I think it would help our community heal,” Wiens said.

Postponing the event is painful, Wiens said, because she knows so many little kids go gaga for fire trucks and relish the chance to meet firefighters.

“We’ll come back big next year,” Wiens said.

The Hudson Gardens canceled its summer concert series even before announcing the lineup.

“Canceling is clearly the socially responsible and appropriate choice,” the botanic gardens and events center said in a news release.

Last summer’s lineup included Seal, Styx and Melissa Etheridge.

Independence Day at Belleview and Cornerstone parks is up in the air at the moment.

“The bottom line is that there are a lot of unknowns right now,” said City of Englewood spokesman Chris Harguth in an email.

The sprawling event, culminating in a king-size fireworks show, is jointly run by Englewood and Littleton.

“Conditions today may be completely different in July, so at this point

we’re in a holding pattern with our entire special events calendar,” Harguth wrote. “As we enter this phasedin approach for opening the state and city, we’ll need to work thoughtfully with Tri-County Health, and within state guidelines, before determining which events are appropriate to move forward with.”

Western Welcome Week, Littleton’s signature bash, now in its 92nd year, could look pretty different this year.

“It’s a moving target,” said Cindy Hathaway, the August festival’s longtime executive director. “There’s no playbook for this.”

Artisans and crafters have been signing up for booths at a good clip, Hathaway said, perhaps motivated by the mass cancellation of many area craft fairs. Meanwhile, the event’s sponsors, mainly local businesses on hard times, are pulling out.

“We don’t know if we’ll be able to host every event and maintain social distancing, or even if we’ll be able to afford to,” Hathaway said.

Events like the opening night fireworks, pancake breakfast and Stick Horse Rodeo tend to draw dense crowds.

The Grand Parade, the festival’s high point, is in question.

“The parade is wait-and-see,” Hathaway said. “It’s been the main event for 91 years, and I’d hate to see it go away in the 92nd. It’s hard to do a virtual parade, and that doesn’t really sound all that fun.”

Hathaway said she and the festival board are brainstorming new ways to hold events, and taking stock of which ones are conducive to social distancing. Art shows and trivia contests are high on the list.

“We’re trying to be creative and optimistic,” Hathaway said. “Western Welcome Week is about community spirit, and there’s always plenty of that in Littleton.”

It has been an interesting process, conducting interviews for the position and introducing Mark to the newsroom and staff, during these COVID-19 times. We have been working remotely since mid-March.

Mark, who came on board three weeks ago, has had to meet everyone — and learn our production systems — all by videoconferences.

We are thrilled about the extensive print and digital experience and leadership he brings to our

newsroom and can’t wait until we’re able to work with him face-to-face.

Mark worked at the Denver Post from 1993-2007 in various positions, as city editor of a 35-reporter desk; online news, state/regional and national/foreign news editor; and music critic. He launched online breaking news coverage at the Post and expanded it at the Denver Business Journal, where he worked from 2007-2018 as reporter, new media editor and news director. He then spent a year and a half as managing editor of Colorado Politics, a weekly magazine and digital outlet of the Colorado Springs Gazette.

Before joining the Post, he was a reporter and editor at daily newspapers in San Francisco and the Seattle area, covering politics, science/environment, business/

development and local government.

He has been freelance reporting and editing since October. He has won many national and regional awards for his work over his career.

Polis ‘optimistic’ but not certain about schools opening in August Announcement comes day after warning educators of possible long delay

Signaling again how long COVID-19 may disrupt life in Colorado, Gov. Jared Polis said he expects in-person classes to resume at the state’s schools in the fall, but acknowledged that it isn’t certain and that schools could stay closed until 2021.

“There’s nobody who can guarantee that that’s going to happen, and of course, school districts should plan for different contingencies,” Polis said at an April 22 news conference.

His comments came a day after he held a conference call with all of Colorado’s public-school district superintendents, advising them in part to prepare for the possibility that in-person classes may not start again until January.

“But I am very optimistic that in-classroom instruction will begin in August — not in exactly the same way,” Polis said at his news conference, noting that different desk configurations and modified passing times for students may be part of the new social distancing guidelines that shape what school looks like for the foreseeable future.

guidelines and implement them over the summer rather than rushing to issue them for the remaining weeks of this school year, Polis said.

“Trying to get something out the door and train people only to have one week left of school didn’t make sense,” Polis said.

The governor signed an executive order April 22 extending the shutdown of normal in-person classes until the end of this school year at all public and private elementary and secondary schools in Colorado, including public preschools on public school campuses.

Generally, that includes P-12 education.

Districts weigh in School districts around the Denver metro area reflected Polis’ caution when questioned by Colorado Community Media reporters.

It’s too early to make decisions about the fall, but a late start could be in the cards, Littleton Public Schools Superintendent Brian Ewert said. What public health officials and the governor’s office see in data about the virus’ spread will influence decisions, he added.

“LPS will prepare for the worstcase scenario, which would be to continue with distance learning, but we will hope for the best, which would be open on a regular schedule. Other considerations floating around the state are opening late,” Ewert said.

That could mean starting school after Labor Day, he continued.

Other ideas include “hybrid models,” where only a portion of the students come to school daily and alternate days, Ewert said.

“Nothing is off the table, and no decisions will be made for quite some time,” Ewert said.

Englewood Schools officials “don’t have a crystal ball,” Superintendent Wendy Rubin said, but they are preparing for several different scenarios.

Those include “beginning our year with remote learning again and including beginning with modified schedules for all kids coming back but having requirements around masks or having temperatures taken before coming into school,” Rubin said.

“We’re going to have a lot of scenarios we are going to plan for.”

Cherry Creek School District is “planning for and hoping for” a return to in-class learning in fall, but the district also is preparing for the possibility that schools are required to stay closed, said Abbe Smith, district spokeswoman.

“Our goal is to have a system in place to easily implement (online) learning if necessary at any point during next school year due to coronavirus,” Smith said.

The Douglas County School District is working closely with local health partners, the Colorado Department of Education and the governor’s office, a district spokeswoman said in a statement.

“We will continue to closely monitor the situation as it evolves and make any decisions in regard to fall learning in alignment with our partners.

We will share that information with our families as soon as decisions are made,” the spokeswoman said.

Jeffco Public Schools officials didn’t respond directly to requests for comment. But in a Facebook Live video April 23, district Superintendent Jason Glass raised the possibility of continued remote learning as one of “three different approaches to this that are being considered. One is that you just start school again just like it was. Another is you don’t do in-person schooling at all, you only go to remote leaning. And the third route is some hybrid of the two.

Stay-at-home orders extended for Adams, Arapahoe counties Tri-County Health sets May 8 end, could extend where virus still spreading

Residents of Adams and Arapahoe counties will see stay-at-home orders extended to May 8, the Tri-County Board of Health agreed April 24.

The board gave Tri-County staff the ability to extend health orders tuned to the needs in local jurisdictions within those two counties going forward based on the numbers of COVID-19 infected residents, hospital admissions and other factors. The state’s stay-at-home order was lifted April 27.

“I think it’s clear to say — and hard to say otherwise —that the metro area remains an area of active transmission, and cases and hospitalizations appear to be flattening but have not begun to decline,” Tri-County Health Executive Director John Douglas said. “Some of our prevention measures — support of long-term care facilities, testing, masking — are improving things, but not as fast as we’d like. Others, like contact investigation, have not paid off yet.”

about 1.5 million residents, will follow its own rules for ending the stay-athome orders. The Tri-County board said they had not seen the Douglas County plan.

The board met via an internet video chat.

Douglas told the board he favored making a blanket approach for all three counties, but said he realized the state faces two issues right now — the

spread of the disease and the damage to the state’s economy.

“We strongly believe that if we are going to do this, let’s do it in a coordinated way,” Douglas said. “Let’s try and coordinate it with those counties that are still experienceing growing and plateaued epidemics.”

The board voted 8-1 to extend the order for the two counties, with the option of issuing longer-term orders

‘Safer at home’ The state has been closed down since March 26. Tri-County’s member counties joined Jefferson and Boulder counties in opting for the stay-at-home order to help slow the spread of the COVID 19 disease on March 24, the day after Denver adopted its order. Those were all superseded a day later when Gov. Jared Polis adopted an order for the entire state.

Polis outlined his plan for moving beyond the general stay-at-home order at an April 21 press conference. The new phase, called “Safer at Home,” allows a slow reopening of the nonessential businesses beginning April 27, encouraging residents to stay at home as much as possible and wear masks in public. Polis’ new order lets counties and municipalities modify the state’s new guidelines based on local conditions.

Stay-at-home order lifted but some restrictions remain ‘Safer at home’ social distancing phase will likely last months

In the final week of Colorado’s stay-at-home order, Gov. Jared Polis compared the month-long measure to a sprint and emphasized that the months ahead — a “marathon” of social distancing — will be critical to keeping the COVID-19 pandemic under control in the state.

“I hate to break it to you, but the easy part was the sprint,” Polis said at an April 20 news conference, announcing a new phase of restrictions Coloradans likely will need to sustain for months.

Coloradans won’t endure a second extension of the statewide stay-at-home order — its final day was April 26 as scheduled. Now, the state still encourages staying home as much as possible, while some semblance of normalcy will return to business and people’s social lives.

Retail stores, for example, will be open for curbside delivery and then gradually open with precautions, according to Polis’ presentation.

remain closed, and bars and restaurants won’t open for dine-in service at least at first, according to Polis’ presentation. The state will wait for data on how opening up retail affects the pandemic in Colorado before making a decision on restaurants, Polis said.

“A phased reopening of restaurants” by mid-May is the goal, Polis said.

Details of ‘safer at home’ State officials dubbed the new phase of social distancing a “safer at home” phase — an order was to be issued April 26 — and for adults older than 60 and people with serious underlying health conditions, the state still urges staying home except when absolutely necessary.

Social distancing is a public health term that means reducing face-toface interaction.

For everyone else, the state strongly advises wearing face coverings in public. Among other restrictions: Sick people may not go to work, Coloradans should avoid unnecessary travel and another part of the presentation said “no gatherings over 10 people.”

“It doesn’t mean we’re going to big nightclubs, but you shop for clothes, get a haircut,” Polis said. Businesses such as salons, tattoo parlors, dog grooming and personal training will open with precautions.

• Normal in-person classes at K-12 schools, and public preschools on public school campuses, remain closed until the end of this school year. Polis has said he’s “optimistic” but not certain that schools will reopen in fall.

• Real estate showings can begin, but no open houses.

• Child care will be open with precautions.

Coloradans are asked to avoid “unnecessary social interactions,” according to the presentation.

Eventually, a third social distancing phase — dubbed “protect our neighbors” — would see people socialize more normally with “significant precautions” and protections for vulnerable populations.

That will occur when the capacity to better test for COVID-19 and monitor its spread will work “at scale,” the presentation said.

But “that’s a long way off,” Polis said.

Fluctuation between the three levels — the first was the stay-athome order — may be needed to recover from outbreaks, according to the presentation. Polis has said a stay-at-home order may need to be issued again if the virus’s spread is dire enough.

Local public health agencies had the ability to apply for relief from the stay-at-home order to more effectively meet local conditions, according to the order’s text.

The governor’s enthusiasm appeared to encourage moves for local control going forward, and the presentation announced a process for local governments to modify the state’s new guidelines based on local conditions.

“There should not be, in a big diverse state, one statewide approach. We knew the situation would be different in Otero County, in Pitkin County” and so on, Polis said.

That means local officials could implement measures locally to address a COVID-19 outbreak at a single facility, or issue a stay-athome order for a neighborhood or area with an outbreak, Polis said.

Local governments also can relax guidelines further than the state if they have “very low case counts and/or demonstrate proof of 14

Polis said the state continues its work to increase testing capacity and noted the state is seeing 10 times as much testing as around when the pandemic began in Colorado.

“But even if you had all that (mass) testing, you wouldn’t have the ability to follow up from a quarantine perspective” on most people, and social distancing would still be necessary, Polis said.

Another shortcoming of testing is that a large portion of those with COVID-19 don’t show symptoms, the governor added.

“No one anywhere is even close to testing (all) asymptomatic people,” Polis said.

Colorado is dealing with testing supply shortages, like other places across the country, according to Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist.

Since opening in Sheridan’s River Point development west of South Santa Fe Drive in 2016, Dead Hippie Brewing has seen “continuous growth” in its revenues. However even by those standards, owner Dean Edmundson said January and February had been two of the “most amazing” months of business in the brewery’s existence.

But then came March, the COVID-19 epidemic and, eventually, Gov. Jared Polis’ stay-at-home order.

The result? A 60% drop in revenue that is creating a “very challenging situation” for the brewery, where Edmundson said he has remained committed to keeping on his sixperson staff.

Now, Edmundson is left to hope that the staff can begin serving customers again in the brewery’s taproom soon (for now only to-go sales are allowed) — and that those customers start coming back once they can do so.

“As long as we are opening back up around mid-May we should be OK,” Edmundson said. “If this goes to mid-July it’s a different story, but I think we will probably still survive.”

Thousands could close nationwide Edmundson’s read on the situa-

tion and its impact seems to be a common one among brewers, both along the Front Range and around the country. On April 7, the Brewers Association, a trade group of approximately 5,400 small and independent brewers, released the results of a survey it had conducted of its member breweries about the impact COVID-19 was having on them.

The survey found that member breweries reported an average drop in revenue of 65%, with 62% of respondents reporting they could not sustain their breweries for longer than three months if current social distancing restrictions remain in place. There are 8,150 active breweries in the country, according to the data, meaning that 5,053 breweries could be in danger of closing across the nation in the next three months.

So far, no breweries are known to have closed in Colorado, according to the Colorado Brewers Guild.

Government help uncertain Chris Reigrut, the owner of Half Penny Brewing Company in Centennial, said that his brewery’s sales have declined by 70% and that the overall fate of his brewery will depend not only on how long social distancing measures remain in place but also what kind of assistance he is able to get from the government.

the Paycheck Protection Program,” Reigrut said. “We are hoping we get some from the second round passed this week but it’s looking tough.”

With the epidemic looming, Denver Beer Co. founder Charlie Berger said he “had to make quick decisions in order to conserve cash to be able to reopen the doors at the end of this.” So he made “drastic cuts” to the hours of the staff at his breweries in Denver’s LoHi neighborhood and on Wadsworth Boulevard in Olde Town Arvada.

But the brewery also got creative and launched new virtual events, including a beer pairing series and a virtual Friday afternoon happy hour with guests ranging from Colorado Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland to former governor and current Senate candidate John Hickenlooper.

“By doing some of these creative things we’ve driven some more interest and demand in our current beers, to the point where we have more hours for a staff and everybody who is wanting hours is getting them,” Berger said.

Despite that, overall sales are still

Tristan Schmidt, the marketing and events manager for the Colorado Brewers Guild, said many breweries have also been able to take advantage of Polis’ decision to allow beer to be delivered during the crisis. However, he said breweries will also need to innovate and adapt in other ways to survive.

“We’d encourage them to be nimble, be able to pivot to opportunities they’d shied away from or outright avoided before,” he said.

“But brewers are smart people, and they already know this.”

At Dead Hippie Brewing, Edmundson said he is now working to do just that.

“One thing this is forcing us to do is move into distribution and canning our beer, which is something I thought we were eight to 12 months way from,” he said. “Once we open up we might only be able to have 25 percent of our occupancy so something like distributing cans becomes real important.”

Ultimately, however, it will be up to customers to determine whether Dead Hippie and other breweries survive.

“Support your brewery, because if you want them to be around and be able to go hang out there again, they are going to need it,” Edmundson said.

ince you’re reading this, I don’t need to tell you what an important role this newspaper plays in keeping our communities informed.

That’s why I couldn’t be prouder to be stepping in as editor of Colorado Community Media.

This locally owned FROM THE family of 18 weekly EDITOR newspapers and websites (including this one), plus two monthly Denver neighborhood publications, serves Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas, Elbert and Jefferson counties. CCM’s dedicated news team Mark Harden includes some of the most talented journalists working in Colorado today, watchdogging local governments and school districts, spotlighting businesses and community groups, and portraying the character and color of life in our cities and towns.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, CCM newspapers have performed a

crucial service in keeping readers abreast of its impact in the communities they serve and how this global catastrophe affects lives, families, schools and businesses, proving the value of locally focused reporting.

Like many of our readers, CCM reporters and editors have been working from home during the crisis, in some cases covering their beats while looking after their kids. I salute their commitment to telling these crucial stories under trying circumstances.

CCM journalists also compellingly conveyed the pain and anguish of the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting last May, delivering award-winning coverage of this close-to-home tragedy. And in 2018, our staff teamed up to present “Time to Talk,” a powerful series probing the challenges of mental health and how to spur discussion of the issue into everyday life.

Through it all, CCM has stayed true to its main goal: Keep it local. We are inundated with news and commentary about national and international developments, and the city of Denver is the focus of much coverage by its daily newspaper, TV stations and online outlets. Where CCM fills a vital

role is in keeping the spotlight on the many distinctive metro-Denver communities where hundreds of thousands of people live, work and go to school, telling stories in ways that no one else does.

I come to this position after years as an editor and reporter at The Denver Post, Denver Business Journal and Colorado Politics magazine. I’m a 27-year resident of metro Denver who’s lived in Centennial since 1998, sending two kids through Cherry Creek schools. And I was reared in community journalism; when I was a boy I would hang out after school at the twice-weekly South San Francisco Enterprise-Journal, where my mother, Ellen Harden, was a proofreader.

I’m grateful to CCM owners Jerry and Ann Healey for entrusting me with this position. And I want to give a shout-out to my predecessor, Chris Rotar, who has led this staff with exceptional skill and passion for many years and has been patiently helping me get up to speed at CCM. He will be a tough act to follow, and I wish him well in his future endeavors.

I look forward to hearing from and meeting many of you in the days to

come. For those of you in the west and north metro areas, our regional editors Glenn Wallace and Scott Taylor are still on the job, overseeing our papers there, so please stay in contact with them. Glenn also serves as CCM’s lead online editor.

I am never lonely because I have films, books, music and Harry. I take a least one film a day just like a vitamin. Often it’s a film I have seen before.

Colorado community colleges rise during challenging time

ave any of us ever seen anything like this before?

Shuttered and locked businesses. Stay-at-home orders.

School-aged children underfoot as we struggle to adapt to remote work and GUEST “self-isolating.”

COLUMN Millions suddenly out of work and a stalled economy.

The impacts of the COVID-19 epidemic are overwhelming, inescapable and unprecedented, at least in our lifetimes. It is enough — more Joe Garcia than enough — to make us feel lost and, worse, hopeless.

How we choose to respond to the current crisis will define our future,

and the good news is that Colorado has always been resilient.

We have suffered through floods, fires and blizzards, and we have learned that we are adaptable, that we will pitch in to help our neighbor, and that we can still find groceries and toilet paper if we look hard enough.

For most of us, there is a sense of optimism that we will soon emerge, if not unscathed from the crisis, at least with most of our institutions and systems intact.

While COVID-19 may have brought much of our country to a standstill, we know we need to keep moving, and it is our educational institutions that can fuel our recovery. In fact, almost all of those institutions are still functioning and still fulfilling their missions.

While our students are no longer on our campuses and in our resi-

dence halls, what we are doing now at the Colorado Community College System hasn’t stopped and hasn’t changed. Through our 13 colleges and 40 locations, we still offer more than 5,000 courses and 2,000 degree and certificate programs, serving more than 125,000 college students.

The south metro Denver region is served by Arapahoe Community College.

In the midst of this pandemic, we are still open for business and almost all of our students are continuing their education this semester, although most of them are doing so through online or remote instruction.

None of this is new to us. We have been delivering academic as well as career and technical education courses online for decades and we are good at it. Our students earn meaningful degrees and credentials

that enable them to directly enter the workforce or transfer their credits to four-year colleges and universities in Colorado and beyond.

Our low-tuition, flexible schedules, online courses, and student supportive services make it possible even for those who are working and raising families, or who face other obstacles to traditional college life.

Many of our students come from vulnerable populations that are taking the hardest hits right now.

Parents, employees, mid-career changers, the recently unemployed, and those for whom high school is a distant memory, can find a place and a program for them. They need an education now, more than ever, because we know that even as our economy recovers, it will look very different than it did before.

Robert Karl Kingery

Karl Kingery, PE, passed away on April 16, 2020 at the age of 81. A native of Denver, he met the love of his life, Mary Lou (Buck) Kingery, at East High School in 1953, and they married in 1960.

He earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University in 1961. After graduating from Stanford, he and Mary Lou moved to Ft. Sill, OK, where he was a first lieutenant in the army. In 1963 Karl joined Martin Marietta in Littleton. While working and raising a family, Karl earned his MS in Mechanical Engineering at CU. He also earned his private pilot’s license during this time. During his career at Martin Marietta, he was transferred twice to Seattle to work on the Viking Lander, and because of his work on that project, Karl’s signature can be found on Mars. The majority of the remainder of his career, Karl worked in defense systems on classified projects. He retired in 1998. Karl was, above all else, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who taught by his example the qualities of honesty, humor, and love. Karl was passionate about cars and was a long-

time member of the Rocky Mountain Saab Club. He also enjoyed singing in local chorales; skiing, snowshoeing and hiking in his beloved Rocky Mountains; traveling to all 50 states in the USA and to 52 countries and all seven continents; trap shooting; and the Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; his sons, Robert (Barbara) Kingery of Helena, MT; Ronald (Nichi) Kingery of Castle Rock; daughter, Marnie (Michael) Rocklin of Highlands Ranch; grandchildren: Karl Kingery III (Pareesa), Clint Kingery, Hugh Kingery, Julianne Kingery, Dax Kingery, Ben Rocklin, and Maia Rocklin; and brother, Hugh (Urling) Kingery of Franktown. Due to coronavirus restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to place a park bench in Karl’s honor. Marian C. Banet, “Chris“, a longtime resident of Littleton, CO passed away peacefully on April 20, 2020 in Aurora, CO at the age of 94.

She was born in Louisville, KY on March 2, 1926 to Minnie and “Ben” Schnepp. She met her future husband, Bernard “Bernie” T. Banet, working at the Ford Motor Company and the family moved to Littleton in 1962. Bernie preceded Chris in death in 1975. She is survived by her 2 children: Stephen Banet (Diane) of Goodyear, AZ and Denise Haberthuer (Bernhard) of Knonau, Switzerland, 6 grandchildren: Stephanie, Jonathan (Elizabeth), Tyler (Rachael), Katie (Cody), Nicole and Eric and 2 great grandchildren: Taylor and Evan.

Chris loved Colorado and was an

enthusiastic traveler. She has been to all 50 states, visited her daughter in Switzerland many times, and enjoyed Alaskan cruises. She was a Broncos fan for decades and attended some games with friends. Every Friday, for over 50 years, she and her girlfriends from Southglenn played poker. Her warm smile and quick-witted humor will be dearly missed.

Chris will be interred at Ft. Logan National Cemetery on April 30, 2020.

Due to the present circumstances, the church service and a memorial service at Ft. Logan will take place at a later undetermined date. The family suggests any donations be sent in her name to the Denver Branch of the Colorado Alzheimer’s Association.

Dolores (Deloise) Jeanne Harrison, 83, of Littleton, passed away on April 14, 2020 at Swedish Medical Center.

Born on April 21, 1936 in Vian, Oklahoma, she was the youngest daughter of Charles Hicks and Mattie Elizabeth (Day) Fields.

Jeanne is survived by her children Linda Harrison, Charles Harrison, Mike Harrison, and Sandra Harrison, her four grandchildren Janna, Dylan, Connor and Kayleigh and a great-grandson Gunnar. She is also

survived by her sister Ruth (Fields) Terronez. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by 7 sisters and one brother: Mattie Elizabeth, Charline Vetoria, Elenor May, Katherine Jane, Bettie Lou, Helen Inez, Georgie Lynn, and John Allen.

Some institutions say digital approach could become lasting element

own Hall Arts Center in Littleton was just about to start its spring kids’ classes when the arrival of COVID-19 changed everything.

“Once that all came apart, I, like everybody else, sort of sat back and said: ‘What do we do?’” said Robert Michael Sanders, the education manager at the arts center.

But as the situation came into clearer focus, Sanders realized the center had an opportunity to do something good to help preserve a sense of normalcy for kids and the parents who are struggling to keep them entertained and engaged.

“What we did is we sort of created a pile of classes and decided we could put them together online and just put it out there for people,’” Sanders said. “And we decided that the best thing we could do for the kids stuck at home is just offer something (free of charge) and not add a financial hit to the parents who may or may not be working.”

Sanders said the arts center is offering 10 classes that take place on weekdays between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. to mimic a traditional after-school program. About 90 kids are currently enrolled.

“The response has actually been pretty overwhelming,” Sanders said.

It’s a new way of teaching for Sanders and his team and a new way of learning for the students, but one that has become increasingly commonplace in recent weeks as museums, libraries and other cultural institutions and organizations have responded to the closure of their physical facilities by pivoting to offering content and experiences virtually.

‘Meet the Chickens’ and more On the website of the Golden History Museum and Park, the virtual offerings, which

LIFE are updated weekly, have ranged from lectures about history and museum artifacts to a “meet the chickens” program offering a behindthe-scenes look at the park’s chickens. Then there is a new recurring feature in which Nathan Richie, the museum’s director, demonstrates how to make a historical recipe in his kitchen with the help of his two kids.

Now, the museum is seeing value in what began as an experiment to try to adapt and stay connected to the museum’s audience during the closure.

“It’s actually been a little freeing for us because we are trying to just rapidly come up with stuff instead of taking weeks or months to plan something,” Richie said. “So far the stuff we have been doing has kind of had a grittier feel than some of the more produced stuff we are used to doing,” It’s an approach that seems to be finding an audience, as Richie said the museum has seen “an eight- or ninefold increase” in its web and social media traffic. The director said he has also been excited to see people tune into the programs not just from Golden but around the world.

“The museum has a number of members that lived in Golden and moved away but still want to stay connected, or maybe their family members were pioneers in Golden but they’ve never been here, and now they are able to participate in the museum in ways that they’ve never been able to be-

Richie said the museum is making plans to continue with some online programming — although likely at a reduced frequency — even after the museum reopens.

Museums as large as the Denver Museum of Nature & Science are also experimenting with homemade content and offerings—and seeing success doing so.

Tina Martinez, the director of programs and partnerships at the

Martinez said she received plenty of feedback by people who have been amazed by the ability of museum staff to offer “museum-quality” programming online.

“We did one program where we used some of our planetarium technology and we were able to put that online and take people through all through the universe just as we would in the planetarium, but we were doing that through a Zoom platform,” said Martinez.

Few Denver-area institutions can match the pro-

gramming capacity of the Jefferson County Public Library system, which puts on “thousands of programs” each year, according to Assistant Director of Community Engagement Deirdre Keating. But with the system’s 10 library branches closed until further notice, Keating said the system is now focusing on “trying to meet people where they are at, and right now that’s in their homes online.”

On April 13, the library began posting a variety of virtual story time videos online (one aimed at babies and toddlers has received several hundred views) and it’s also posting a variety of other offerings aimed at kids and adults to the virtual programs section of its website.

“Its’s very much been about figuring out how to do things in an entirely different format,” said Keating. “And it’s amazing to me because these are librarians in their home, with my staff holding their hands and showing them how to videotape themselves and get some good audio, and then our graphic design team editing those videos and fixing the sound and getting them ready.”

t was another quiet Friday afternoon in Littleton. Several weeks into Gov. Jared Polis’ stay-at-home order, rush hour felt like a distant memory.

At South Platte Park on April 24, a handful of bicyclists whizzed along the Mary Carter Greenway, about half wearing face masks.

Beside the South Platte River, Alfonso Mendoza cast a fishing line into the river. No nibbles yet, but Mendoza said the babbling of the river was a nice replacement for the babbling of gloomy TV news.

At Romano’s Italian Restaurant on Windermere Street, a line stretched down the block, each masked person giving each other a wide berth, waiting for their turn to pick up orders.

Inside, the din of a busy kitchen belied the quiet as Littleton resident Michael Jordan hauled off a stack of pizza boxes, followed by restaurant owner John Romano hauling the rest of Jordan’s order.

“I’ve got a pretty big family,” Jordan said. “This is our third or fourth Romano’s dinner since this all began. It’s a morale booster.”

He added: “We are probably in the world of the hybrid where we try to create some in-person learning opportunities, but because of the restrictions placed on us because of the virus and trying to maintain public health and keep our students and our staff safe, … school is probably going to look different.

And so we have to think of 1alternative schedules, alternative days, the blending of remote learning and in-person learning. We’re making every effort to stand up in-person learning in the fall. You can look for the release of plans related to that some time soon -after our school year ends.”

Denver Public Schools didn’t directly mention plans for the fall but nodded to uncertainty in the coming months in a statement.

“DPS leadership is continuing to develop contingency plans for the various scenarios and health precautions we could be facing over the next several months, with the overriding priority always being the health and well-being of our students and staff,” Winna MacLaren, a spokesperson for DPS, said in a statement. “It

Player gets baseball fix on video Spye Turnbeaugh will go on to play at Colorado Mesa

ith no high school baseball being played this spring because of COVID-19, Spye Turnbeaugh has been forced to spend more time upstairs in his spare hours playing Major League Baseball video games.

Turnbeaugh is a senior who was a pitcher at Arapahoe High School and has signed to continue playing at Colorado Mesa. But with the Colorado High School Activities spring sports season canceled, he’s had to make adjustments.

“I have school still so I make sure I have all my work done,” he explained. “Once I have gotten everything done and make sure my days are good, I’ll go upstairs to workout in my little gym that I have in my dad’s house. I will throw outside and play basketball in my back yard and then I miss baseball so much I will play video games. It’s basically MLB. You can build your own teams and play other people.

“I’m missing baseball a lot. I sure do miss it.”

COACH’S TAKE: ‘Spye is a hard worker who wants to play every day. He was our top pitcher but he was not satisfied with that. He is a fierce competitor. There have been times when I go to the mound and I can just see the fire in his eyes saying, ‘don’t you dare take me out.’ Which is something you want in your guys. Spye has that.’

Q&A with Turnbeaugh What has been the hardest part about missing your senior season?

For me it was the chance of other seniors like me to finish off their baseball career. For me, I’m lucky and blessed to be able to continue my career. But this was their last shots for some of these kids besides maybe summer or some club baseball. It’s

disappointing how hard some of my teammates have worked to get their spot on varsity and it hurts to see their work go down the drain a little bit.

What would your goals have been for the season?

My big goal was to have fun and make sure everybody was enjoying the game and working

hard to win, of course. I guess a personal goal for me this spring would have been to become the hitter I was last year. Last year once I got my chance to hit, the first hit I got was a home run. I was so proud that I was second on the team in batting average. I wanted to become a leader in hitting and pitching, of course.

How does missing the season affect your college plans if at all?

It really affected colleges from a financial standpoint, but for me, just not being able to show them what I have. Last year they saw my stats and knew what they were going to get, but I really wanted to prove it and come in and maybe immediately start.

It’s official: Spring seasons canceled

It was an announcement that was expected.

Colorado High School Activities Association Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green revealed on April 22 in a statement to athletes, coaches, administrators, officials and school communities that the spring sports seasons have been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Blanford-Green in the statement said, “Around the nation more than 30 other state associations have made the difficult decision to cancel their spring season. We hoped that Colorado medical and health data would provide reassurances that we could go in a different direction.

Unfortunately that will not be the case. The 2020 spring season is canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which is affecting communities across the world.”

Cherry Creek baseball coach Marc Johnson agrees that the spring sports season should be suspended.

“We all knew this was coming,” said Johnson. “I feel so bad for the kids. As much as I would love and want to be playing, it was a good decision. I am going to accept what it is and when it is time, I will move on.”

ThunderRidge baseball coach Brad Johnson shared similar thoughts: “I am heartbroken for all our seniors that they did not have the chance to complete this season.”

Blanford-Green also had a message for seniors in her statement.

“Our hats are off to the many seniors that have shown maturity and resolve as their culminating year of high school has been impacted beyond activities and athletics due to worldwide COVID-19 pandemic,” she said. “The Class of 2020 will not be forgotten.”

Jack Tuttle, a senior lacrosse player at Castle View, wasn’t happy with the cancellation. “I think we were really going to turn some heads this year and missing the opportunity really stinks,” he said.

In her statement, Blanford-Green also said the regulations outlined in the previous CHSAA spring moratorium would remain until June 1 even if federal and state guidelines are relaxed. That means no student and/ or coach contact in an activity or athletic setting prior to June 1.

After June 1, all decisions regarding student and coach contact, virtual workouts, virtual tryouts and eighth-grade contact will be made at the local level.

Now the question that most people have is about the fall high school sports seasons.

“Our fingers are crossed and hopes are that the Association will be able to conduct a fall season with some level of normalcy,” Blanford-Green said in the statement.

Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock announced via Twitter April 23 that the city would extend the stay-at-home order for the city and county until May 8.

In the Tri-County area, out of the three counties’ total of 3,475 COVID-19 cases, the Arapahoe County portion of Aurora alone accounted for 1,194, according to Tri-County’s online data as of April 24. The city with the next-largest total was Thornton with 224. while Centennial had 206 cases. Highlands Ranch had the most cases of any community in Douglas County, with 119. The north portion of Aurora, with 199 cases, sits in Adams County.

As of April 23, Arapahoe County’s total sat at 1,885 cases, Adams had 1,131 cases and Douglas County had 403 cases. Location was pending for 56 cases. Arapahoe had seen 99 deaths, Adams 44 and Douglas 21.

Two epidemics Kaia Gallager, an Arapahoe County representative, wondered if 10 days

was long enough. Douglas said picking a date to end the state orders was less science than art. Douglas said public health officials had considered extending the orders two weeks, since that represented the incubation period for the virus.

“Others said hold on, one incubation period is not enough. You need two incubation periods,” Douglas said.

“That would be a month from April 27 and I am not an economic expert, but I am very mindful of the business community and trying to figure out how we can balance people who are concerned that their businesses are closing and people are losing their jobs and the resulting impacts.”

Douglas said there is no magic date that work, and he said he’s confident it will end after May 8 in the two counties.

“Barring all hell breaking loose, I don’t see us extending it beyond that,” he said. “From a purely public health perspective, getting testing and contact tracing in place, yeah. But for trying to create the best, most effective and fair solution for the community dealing with what I belive is two epidemics — a COVID epidemic and an unemployment epidemic — May 8 makes sense to me.”

Church provides free groceries via drive-thru event, home delivery Summit Church in Centennial gives ‘care kits’ to families in need during pandemic

Tucked between the highway and the vast Interstate 25 business corridor, the location might seem like an unlikely place for grace and hospitality.

But Summit Church has emerged as a respite for those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing dozens of families with food, toilet paper, paper towels and diapers at its “Summit Cares” events.

“We were brainstorming: What’s the most effective way to help most amount of people?” said Austin McEathron, who works with volunteers at the church. They decided to give out groceries for free “and be available to meet people’s spiritual needs as well,” McEathron said.

Church volunteers gave away more than 100 bundles of groceries — dubbed “care kits” — on April 15,

“We ask them when they drive up: `Is there anything you need?’ ” McEathron said. He added: “We can kind of personalize it to fit your needs.”

It’s all part of an effort to help those

who find themselves on hard times amid the pandemic’s economic disruption, particularly those who can no longer afford groceries or people who were furloughed or laid off.

But there are no criteria people must meet to receive groceries, McEathron said.

And as people exited the event, a church team stands ready to pray for

them if they want prayer, McEathron added.

The church held another drive-thru grocery giveaway April 22, which will likely be the final drive-thru event it holds, McEathron said.

However, the church, located at 7200 S. Clinton St., also has made about 10 home deliveries of free groceries. People can request delivery on the church’s website under the “get help” label at thesummit.online. The church’s phone number is 303-792-7200.

The team has pulled off the effort with the help of generous people at the church, drop-off donation hours and contributions to the church’s COVID-19 relief fund, McEathron said.

“It was definitely a church-wide effort,” he said.

For McEathron, who oversees small groups and connecting people at the church, the best part has been “seeing the body of Christ be mobilized” and people using their God-given gifts to help in the ways they’re able, he said.

“In a time like this, it’s easy to be inward-focused because we have to adapt,” McEathron said. “But I’ve seen Summit Church be outwardfocused.”
