Group calls for firing of Arapahoe High principal School board president said he supports Natalie Pramenko

An anonymous group is calling for the firing of Arapahoe High School Principal Natalie Pramenko amid what it calls a destructive culture at the school.

Calling itself the Arapahoe High School Community Coalition, or AHSCC, the group comprises roughly two dozen students, parents, teachers and alumni of the school, according to its attorney, Jessica Peck.

The group says that Arapahoe’s culture has deteriorated in the years since the 2013 shooting death of senior Claire Davis at the hands of a classmate, Peck said, citing several student suicides, the recent high-profile arrests of two teachers accused of sexually assaulting students, and what it calls substance abuse problems and bullying at the school.

The group plans to present the results of a “community stakeholder” survey distributed via social media at the April 25 Littleton Public Schools Board of Education meeting, as part of what Peck says will be an ongoing effort to oust Pramenko and launch an

investigation into the school’s culture.

Peck called the group’s efforts “the end of a multi-year effort to collaborate and work with the district amicably.”

Peck said the group believes Pramenko’s leadership has fallen short.

“She’s got a very tough job, and we need somebody at the helm of this school who’s up to the job,” Peck said. “There comes a point in every organization where it’s appropriate to contemplate whether it’s time to turn the page and get fresh leadership.”

Pramenko replied to the group’s efforts in a letter sent to parents on April 5, touting the school’s and district’s reform efforts following the 2013 shooting, as well as efforts to address issues surrounding mental health, drug abuse and sexual misconduct.

“I want to be very clear Pramenko that I too share these serious concerns,” Pramenko’s letter read in part. “Moving forward, I will be doing more to tackle these tough issues to strengthen our community. A task force that includes students, parents, faculty, staff members, and community members will be established to dive more deeply into issues of mental health, suicide, social media, substance abuse, and school culture.”

rado Community Media, Pramenko called the group’s push disheartening.

“There’s a lot to be proud of at Arapahoe,” said Pramenko, who became principal of the school in 2012. “I’m tired of people dragging our school through the mud. We’ve been through hard times and made significant improvements, and I feel like whoever’s doing this is dragging us backwards.”

No members of the group have agreed to go on the record with Colorado Community Media about the claims, citing fear of community backlash and retribution from district officials.

Littleton Public Schools Superintendent Brian Ewert said he is “not dissatisfied” with Pramenko’s job performance, and called Arapahoe “One of the state’s premier high schools.”

“Arapahoe is a great school,” Ewert said. “It’s emotionally supportive. All of our schools are under-resourced, and Natalie is the right person to lead the school at this time. We don’t dismiss people based on an anonymous community survey.”

LPS Board of Education President Jack Reutzel called the group’s efforts — particularly the online survey — misguided.

“We take constructive criticisms to heart,” Reutzel said. “It’s not that we’re upset about the survey, because I haven’t seen the results. But the idea that we’re being asked to go outside a procedure that works well to make

changes based upon social media is something we don’t agree with. It’s not what we do.”

Reutzel praised Pramenko’s job performance.

“I think she’s been sincere, honest and forthright,” Reutzel said. “When the kids suffer, she suffers. When the kids are happy, she’s happy. The amount of support she’s received has been overwhelming. She’s been nothing but really appropriate.”

Peck, the group’s attorney, says Pramenko and the district have failed to properly address issues raised by a 2016 report on the attack that killed Davis, which was prepared by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence. The report criticized the school and the district for what it called failures of interdepartmental and interagency information sharing, threat assessment and access to mental health resources.

“After four or five years of saying ‘trust us, trust us,’ and three years since the report chronicling the failures of this school that led up to Claire Davis’ death, we see that those problems exist but are exacerbated and getting worse,” Peck said.

Reutzel pushed back against the group’s assertions, saying the district may not be perfect, but has made strides since 2013.

Farmers market owner, longtime chef is former New Yorker

Diego Hernandez says the farmers market life can be tough, but he loves connecting people to good food.

It started with a raspberry bush I’m a farmers market owner.

I’ve been a chef most of my life.

My life in farmers markets started out with a raspberry bush. My daughter and I were making jam all summer, and we just had some left over, so I took it to a farmers market, and I’ve been in that world ever since.

My specialty is lemon curd. It’s a custard base, so that’s lemon, eggs, butter and sugar. All the worst things for you, then you put them together and it’s fantastic.

Working the farmers market circuit is hard. The season is only have six months in Colorado, so you have to make a year’s worth of wages in half a year, and produce enough to meet demand.

A symbiotic relationship Why not do something else?

Well, as a chef, I was already used to irregular hours and not having weekends off. I feel that being in a farmers market is a good use of my chef ’s skills, because I’m bringing healthy, nutritious food to people. It’s more about feeding people than cooking things to me.

I’m getting more into urban farming all the time, which allows us to grow us some of the produce we sell, and we can get the rest from local growers we know. We rely on each other, and it becomes a symbiotic relationship.

Growing up in New York City,

this is the lifestyle I always wanted.

The Big Apple I grew up in Manhattan, off 207th street. It was a tough neighborhood in the 1970s and 1980s.

I remember the New York City blackout of 1977. I was in the shower, and the lights went out. I jumped out of the shower, ran to the window, and all of New York was just off. We had the radio on, and they were talking about people looting and destroying businesses.

I came out to Colorado in 1995, and I’ve loved every minute here.

I’ve had maybe three bad days in the last 24 years.

I lived my life, I enjoyed my life, but I wouldn’t go back.

Students commit to serving others ‘Columbine Spirit’ fuels projects on Day of Service

More than a thousand students from Columbine High School will embark on service projects throughout the community on April 20 for the third annual Day of Service.

“We wanted to take such a tragic day and try to turn it into something positive,” Scott Christy, Columbine’s principal, said. “It’s a great way to honor the day, honor the victims.”

In the aftermath of the April 20, 1999 tragedy, community members leaned on one another for hope and strength and were overwhelmed with an outpouring of kindness and support from people across the world.

“It’s hard to articulate in words,” Christy said.

“You kind of have to feel it. A lot of schools or organizations will say they’re a family, but I think at Columbine, it means something different. There is a bond that we have with each other and with our school.

I think there is a pride, a love for

school that I think is very difficult to replicate anywhere else.”

Christy calls it the “Columbine Spirit” — something that bonds the school together.

Currently Columbine High has 13 teachers who were on staff in 1999 and five teachers who were students at Columbine that year. Several long-standing teachers recently retired.

Christy said educators like Frank DeAngelis, former principal, and the teachers who stuck with the school after the tragedy went through difficult times and should be recognized for their heroic actions.

“To stick with something like this and make it into what it is today is truly heroic,” he said. “It’s a model of resiliency.”

Although current students were not yet born when the tragedy struck, it is something that lingers within the culture of the school.

“The kids are aware,” Christy said.

“But they don’t come here thinking this horrible thing happened. This is their home.”

Christy said the story of Columbine High is one of strength, resilience, community and family.

Christy said he hopes other schools

and organizations who have experienced mass shootings and tragedy can look at Columbine and see that they can come back strong if they work as a community.

The Day of Service is one way Columbine High is continuing that strength.

For the first 17 years after the tragedy, school was not held on April 20.

Classes are still not held on that day, but for the past two years, the Day of Service has been.

Service projects vary from sprucing up the garden at the local elementary school to cleaning up nearby Clement Park and local trails. The day is centered on remembering the lives lost, reflecting on the lives forever changed and recommitting to the power of service in the community.

While projects are limited to Columbine High students and teachers, the school encourages the community and people across the world to participate in their own service projects on April 20.

It’s a challenge to make a recommitment — to kindness, to community, to serving others.

“Columbine is a symbol of resiliency,” Christy said.

Littleton Public Schools is often recognized as a national leader in school security, says Guy Grace, the district’s director of security and emergency planning.

But when the Columbine tragedy hit in the nearby Jefferson County Public Schools district in 1999, things were more rudimentary.

“Security was more about property protection back then,” said Grace, whose title in 1999 was security facilitator. “We were worried about vandals and trespassers. We had security cameras, but they just taped onto videocassette, and they got taped over every day.”

On the day of the Columbine tragedy, Littleton schools went into lockdown, but beyond that, district officials were flying by the seat of their pants.

“There was no roadmap,” Grace said. “There were no processes and procedures.”

In the weeks that followed, LPS cut down on entrances into schools and increased security and police patrols around school perimeters.

As years passed, things got more sophisticated. In 2002 the district adopted one of the country’s first integrated security systems, utilizing a wide range of cameras, security protocols and coordinated communication with local law enforcement.

Today, the district is cited as a model of school security, drawing articles in national publications. Grace is also the director of the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools, a nationwide school security consortium.

The task these days is to integrate physical security measures with mental health services, Grace said, and to break down communication barriers between students, staff and parents.

LPS was hit with a tragedy in 2013, when an Arapahoe High School student killed classmate Claire Davis.

Grace said the incident could have been “a hundred times worse, if we hadn’t had lockdown drills.”

Grace said there’s work yet to be done.

“Are we perfect? No, we’ll never be perfect, but we’re evolving.”

A week after her daughter Lauren Townsend was killed at Columbine, Dawn Anna stood at a memorial event beside her husband, Bruce Beck.

While the speaker said to bow their heads in prayer, Anna said something told her to look up.

She saw a red-tailed hawk circling above, its head cocked, with one eye on the crowd.

“Lauren was there letting us know it was OK,” said Beck, Lauren’s stepfather.

“It was a sign: Keep looking up,” Anna said. “Keep moving ahead.”

In the 20 years since Columbine, Anna and Beck have donated more than $300,000 to animal-related causes through Lauren’s Wildlife Fund, in honor of their daughter who felt a pow-

erful connection to animals.

“Lauren worked at a small animal hospital, and every week she’d come home saying we needed to adopt this dog or that dog,” Beck said.

The fund has given grants to the Keenesburg Wild Animal Sanctuary, the Wildlife Experience and groups that save wolves in Fort Collins, apes in Hawaii, and even raccoons in Minnesota.

“We couldn’t be more proud of the difference she’s made in animals’ lives,” Beck said.

Moving forward hasn’t been easy.

“With Lauren’s loss came a huge hole in my heart,” Anna said. “That hole doesn’t get any smaller, and I don’t expect it to. But my goal is to make my heart bigger, so the hole won’t seem so big. Since losing her I’ve tried to do good deeds, to reach out to others in tragedy. Maybe it’s a little selfish, because I know the more you

give, the more you help yourself.”

Anna said she tries to reach out to others going through trauma and tragedy, but she’s learned there are no words to be said.

After the tragedy at Columbine, Anna said her first visitor was a friend who was known for being a motormouth.

“I thought, ‘please just go away.’ I wasn’t sleeping or eating. Sometimes I’d forget to breathe. If Lauren wasn’t doing it, I didn’t want to do it. But my friend sat next to me. She didn’t say a word. Every now and then, she’d get me a glass of water.”

Anna said it was a great lesson.

“To help others, just sit with them.

There’s not a word you can say that will mean a thing.”

Anna is proud of Columbine’s new atrium that replaced the library where Lauren died.

Rick Townsend’s daughter Lauren has been gone for 20 years, and the thoughts still cross his mind.

“I wonder what she’d be like today,” Townsend said. “We lost graduation.

A wedding. Grandkids. Sometimes I just sit and think about it.”

Townsend has devoted himself to keeping the memories of Lauren and the others who died with her in 1999 alive. He’s president of the Columbine Memorial Foundation, which maintains the memorial to the Columbine victims in Clement Park, adjacent to the high school.

“We’re here to remember those that died, support those who were injured, and honor those affected by the shooting,” Townsend said.

The school and the memorial are places of great Townsend importance to Townsend — the memorial as a place of remembrance, but the school as a place of life.

“The school is a vital part of the community,” Townsend said. “It was before this happened, and it still is today. Getting rid of the old library, where so many died, and building the new one made it so the school could

be a valid, highly functioning high school, and not a monument to death and tragedy.”

Townsend said he still struggles to understand.

“I don’t know why these shootings are still happening,” he said. “People think because I lost a child to one I must know something others don’t, but I don’t know any more than they do. There’s the availability of guns, but it’s a multifaceted thing. There’s mental health issues. You can’t solve it by doing any one thing. I don’t have the answers.”

But Townsend does know that he’d like to see a more loving world.

“There’s a need to connect to people.

We can commit to being more kind and accepting and considerate of others. Try to pass that along to others.”

Sean Graves will always carry some of Columbine with him.

Shot several times in the massacre’s first moments, Graves spent three years after the tragedy in a wheelchair.

In 2002, he rolled onto the graduation stage, stood up, took his diploma and walked away.

Graves still struggles to run or climb a ladder without strain.

“I was 15 when I was shot,” Graves said.

“That was 20 years ago.

I’ve lived with these injuries longer than I lived without them.”

Graves still struggles Graves with flashbacks and post-traumatic stress, he said. To this day, he analyzes any room he’s in for exits and people who could be threats.

The years after the tragedy brought darkness and anger, Graves said.

“I couldn’t tell you why it happened,” Graves said. “I wasn’t in the killers’ shoes. But for me, the only way I could move forward without being angry at life or my situation was to forgive them.”

“It was relieving, to be honest.

Once I realized I didn’t have to spend the rest of my life angry at this pair of people, a weight was taken off my chest. I stepped out of the darkness.”

Graves’ wife, Kara, said she is grateful for her husband’s personal growth.

“Without forgiving them, it’s like they won,” Kara said. “They still control your life. We’ve been together 16 years, so I’ve seen him before and after he came to terms with it. It’s definitely improved our quality of life.”

Among the more profound impacts, Kara said, is how they raise their 3-year-old daughter.

“I think 20 years ago this wasn’t at the forefront of anybody’s mind,” Kara said. “Today it’s a way of life.

As kids we did tornado drills. Our daughter will do shooter drills. It’s taken our innocence away.”

Graves said if there’s a silver lining, it’s that his daughter will grow up more aware.

“I kept telling myself it wasn’t real,” he said. “I hope my daughter is smarter. I’ll tell her: If this happens, you have to survive.”

‘Every morning, I wake up and recite their names’ Former Columbine Principal Frank DeAngelis

Frank DeAngelis stuck it out.

DeAngelis was principal of Columbine High School the day of the tragedy in 1999. He stayed in that role until 2014.

“When I retired, I’d been here through the graduation of all the kids who were in elementary school during the tragedy,” DeAngelis said.

Today, DeAngelis is a consultant for Jefferson County Public Schools and a national speaker on recovering from tragedy. He’s thankful his work puts him back in touch with young people.

“I was a teacher, coach and principal for 35 years,” he said. “I missed the kids.”

DeAngelis rejects the accusation that swirled in the aftermath of the attack that Columbine’s culture pushed the killers to violence.

“Was there bullying?

Yes,” he said.

But DeAngelis was one of a select few who viewed the “basement tapes,” lengthy video diaries made by the killers, before they were DeAngelis destroyed.

“In those tapes, they don’t talk about bullying. They talk about feeling godlike. Agents of natural selection. People who will be remembered forever.”

Instead, DeAngelis focuses his heart

on the 13 victims killed in 1999.

“Every morning, I wake up and recite their names,” he said. “I’ll do that until the day I die.”

After 20 years, DeAngelis said, he hopes Columbine serves as a lesson that communities can heal after mass trauma.

“We’ll always remember that horrific day, but Columbine represents hope,” he said. “It’s not an easy road.

There was a phrase that became popular after the tragedy: ‘We Are Columbine.’ And it’s true — we became one.”

‘We see a thousand minds transformed’ Darrell and Sandy Scott, parents of victim Rachel Scott

Rachel Scott’s life ended in 1999, but her spirit of compassion continues to save the lives of others around the world.

Rachel’s parents, Darrell and Sandy Scott, run Rachel’s Challenge, a program that spreads their daughter’s principles of love and understanding far and wide.

“We always miss her, but we get to celebrate her life every day,” Sandy said. “She could’ve lived to be 90 years old and she might not have had this kind of impact. And this is what she wanted: to make a difference in the world. And she’s doing it.”

Rachel’s Challenge had its origins in testimony Darrell gave before Congress a month after Columbine, with a powerful speech that remains popular today.

“By the time I got home, I was invited to 40 major events,” Darrell said. “For two years I traveled to football stadiums, hockey arenas — I spoke in front of tens of thousands of people. We began to realize the impact of Rachel’s story on young lives. We met with educators and began to form

the program.”

The program includes a series of challenges, drawn from Rachel’s diaries, that push kids to rid themselves of prejudice and find compassion for each other.

Today, Rachel’s Challenge has 50 presenters who travel the world speaking to students. Darrell estimates they’ve been in front of 28 million kids.

The numbers may be big, but the effects are personal and intimate.

“We hear from more than 150 kids a year who planned to commit suicide, but changed their minds after our programming,” Darrell said.

Spreading love is a great privilege, Darrell said, though he wishes it drew wider attention from the media.

“We see a thousand minds transformed in one school,” Darrell said.

“Bullies are crying, kids are helping one another, and it gets maybe a blip in the news. Then, somebody says something nasty to someone else, and they’ll get 30 minutes.”

Darell said he takes to heart something Rachel wrote just a month before she died: “Compassion is the greatest form of love humans have to offer.”

They never stop.

Coni Sanders’ father Dave Sanders was the only teacher killed at Columbine.

To this day, Sanders still gets bombarded with messages from what she calls “Columbiners,” people obsessed with every last detail of the massacre that took her father.

“There are hundreds of social media accounts claiming to be the killers,” Sanders said. “Worse, some claim to be my dad.”

The most disturbing thing, Sanders said, is how many mass shooters turn out to be “Columbiners” themselves.

For Sanders, it’s a clarion call to rethink how our culture, and mass media, approach mass shooters.

“Making them famous is like wrapping up a present and giving it to them,” she said.

Sanders is under no delusion that eliminating notoriety will stop mass shootings.

“Anybody with half a brain knows we’ll never be able to stop this,” she said. “It’s about reducing it, and there’s no one answer… It’s like a thousandpiece puzzle, but if we start putting it together we’ll see better results.”

Sanders said she’s frustrated by what she calls a lack of action on gun violence.

“It’s unbelievable to me that people’s

beliefs outweigh their loved one’s lives.”

After her father’s death, Sanders became a forensic therapist, working with people released from prison for violent crimes, to help them chart a safer path in life.

“Right after it happened, I wondered: What happened to those two boys? I found out they did get mental health treatment. They were in a diversion program. And now I work with that program.”

Sanders said she’s not sure her work gives her any insight into Columbine specifically, but said we can all help make the world safer.

“Violence prevention is smiling at someone you normally wouldn’t,” she said. “Saying hi to someone. Striking up a conversation. The people I work with, when they’re violent, it’s when they feel left out, alone or wronged.”

Sanders said she doesn’t hold ill will over her father’s death, though she spent years angry at him for repeatedly running back into the school, braving gunfire to secure classrooms full of panicked students.

“But if he could come back, I think he’d tell us he’d do it again,” she said.

After 20 years, Sanders said, it’s high time we shift our thinking.

“This is no longer about what happened on April 20,” she said. “This is about how we have fewer April 20ths.

We’re all in danger, but we have love and hope we can focus on.”

“I think the first thing we heard was a call for someone with an ankle injury at Columbine High School,” said Bill Pessemier, who in 1999 was Littleton’s fire chief. “Then it was shots fired. I was in a staff meeting at city hall, and I decided I better go see what was happening.”

What unfolded Pessemier was one of the most horrific scenes Pessemier ever saw. A SWAT team commandeered one of his fire trucks to get closer to the school while Pessemier coordinated medical response.

“The patients we got to, the ones who were alive, they survived,” Pessemier said.

In the decades since the shooting stopped at Columbine, Pessemier has had time to reflect, but hasn’t come up with any big answers.

“Why did this happen?” Pessemier said. “Why does this occur in our society? There are problems with guns, with mental health care, with the way young people are brought up. And rather than bringing people together, these problems just push us apart.”

The bottom line, Pessemier said, is that we need to treat each other better.

“The people who do this are sick,” Pessemier said. “The vast majority of firefighter fatalities are preventable. I look at this the same way: Most shootings are preventable.

Somebody saw something that could have led to an intervention. We’ve got to reach out to one another.”

Elliott, who runs the medical team at Littleton Adventist Hospital, said April 20, 1999, is vivid in his memory.

“We didn’t get the most serious victims, but we got the most numbers of victims,” Elliott said. “The normal emergency room volume and

walk-ins shut down. People knew something was going on, and I think they stayed away partly out of respect.”

Elliott Elliott said he still meets people affected by the tragedy all the time.

“It made me realize that something like that could happen any time. It made me more empathetic.”

To this day, Elliott said, the hospital’s medical teams are affected by other shootings.

“Every time there’s another, and people mention Columbine, we feel it. The ER group will send cards to that ER. We say: ‘We’re thinking about you. We know what you’re going through.’”

‘I don’t look at the world the same anymore’ Richard Nakata, former bomb squad tech Many Littleton residents know Richard Nakata as the magician at Reinke Bros. costume shop. But 20 years ago, Nakata was a deputy and bomb squad technician for the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office, who spent hours in Columbine High School’s library the day of the attack, searching for bombs and booby traps among the bodies of victims.

57 bombs from the bodies of the killers.

“Those of us clearing the room, we were all parents,” Nakata said.

I realized how easily it could be my kids.”

Today, Nakata said, he can’t

stand violence in mass media. It glorifies or downplays murder, he said. He’d like to see young people understand the realities of law enforcement, the justice system, and the impacts of violence.

Nakata said he sometimes still finds himself transported back to Columbine, to the library, in his dreams.

“I really don’t know how to change the problem,” he said, “but I don’t look at the world the same anymore.”

City studies future of finances, seeks more revenue Council plans to hire grant managers, gauge support for tax increases

Littleton City Council anticipates requesting an additional $1.7 million this year and next on a variety of projects intended to better situate the city for the future.

The additional money will pay for numerous projects, including software overhauls for city offices and the hiring of project managers and grant managers to oversee anticipated windfalls from state and federal programs, according to a report discussed at the April 9 council study session.

City council returned from its annual retreat with a list of plans, with two overarching goals: finish the Envision Littleton project, an umbrella for a slate of visioning and civic planning projects, and evaluate the city’s financial sustainability through close analysis of revenues and costs.

Littleton Mayor Debbie Brinkman.

“Nobody likes to talk about these kinds of things,” Brinkman said. “But it’s not fair to just kick that can down the road. Every year we don’t do it, our numbers start to look worse and worse.”

The city’s general fund currently has 18 percent of its value in savings, said city Finance Director Tiffany Hooten. By the end of 2023, Hooten said, that value is anticipated to drop to 14 percent — below the preferred balance of 17 percent, which would pay for two months of services. The city’s internal policy is to keep between 8 percent and 18 percent in reserves, she said.

Part of the decline will be driven by the additional budget requests in 2019 and 2020, Hooten said.

The grant and project managers will be key to making sure incoming state and federal money is properly handled, said Public Works Director Keith Reester, saying that his department’s current level of staffing makes it difficult to prioritize and plan infrastructure projects.

Related goals include comprehensive audits of the inventory and condition of city assets, buildings and vehicles, said City

Manager Mark Relph.

“We’re struggling deeply with facilities and transportation improvements,” Relph said. “This is a historic challenge for this community. It’s hard to prioritize resources when you don’t know what you have, where it is or what condition it’s in.”

Once projects and costs are identified, finding the money to fund them requires gauging public support for possible tax increases, Brinkman said.

“It’s clear we’re not going to make this money off sales tax,” Brinkman said. “That continues to be flat, or at best a slight blip.”

Council has discussed a variety of possible tax increases, according to a work plan. They include asking voters for a sales tax hike, a new lodging tax or grocery taxes, though a prior grocery tax was repealed by voters in 2008.

Other revenue sources could include instituting fees for business licenses or street maintenance or asking voters for a bond measure.

Brinkman said she felt good about the priorities and strategies that emerged from the retreat.

“I’ll not curse, but we’re kind of getting our stuff together,” she said.

Jane Quinette was reporter for Littleton Independent Former journalist shared city’s stories until mid-1960s

In the early 1960s, Jane Quinette was a reporter for the Littleton Independent, keeping residents informed about what was going on locally with government, schools, business and events until 1964.

She died in Denver on March 29 at age 85.

The University of Denver graduate was born in San Francisco in 1933, and her family moved to Kimball, Nebraska, when she was 14. He journalism degree from the University of Denver led to a connection that resulted in the establishment of a scholarship and support for the Newman Center and Anderson Academic Commons.

She worked for the Western Nebraska Observer, then Otero Junior College in La Junta, then the Littleton Independent until 1964, when she married William H. Quinette, who predeceased her in 2000.

They shared an interest in photography and travel.

She volunteered at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for many years.

The couple had two sons: Brian, of Denver and Glen (Jessica Wiswell-Quinette). Granddaughter Charlotte Jane Quinette, of Seekonk, Massachusetts, also survives.

Littleton gun store scores victory in parking lawsuit Judge rules work can proceed on shooting range, says plaintiffs have ‘other motives’

Triple J Armory scored a victory in a lawsuit filed by a neighboring business, after a judge ruled against a request to force the south Littleton gun store to halt construction of a shooting range on April 8.

In a five-page ruling, Arapahoe County District Judge Frederick Martinez said a lawsuit filed by RHR Investments, which owns a neighboring property, was disingenuous.

While the lawsuit alleged that Triple J has inadequate parking for its gun store and as-yet-unfinished shooting range at

8152 South Park Lane, “it is clear that RHR has other motives associated with (Triple J’s) operation of a gun store and firing range at this property.”

RHR’s owners, mother-and-son team Renata and Ron Lilischkes, have consistently voiced opposition to the presence of a gun range next door to their property at 8122 South Park Lane since last summer, including through emails to the South Park Owners Association and comments to Littleton City Council.

Triple J has been the target of several lawsuits and city enforcement actions since summer 2018. Numerous neighbors objected to the business moving into the South Park neighborhood, saying the location was too close to nearby schools, daycares and homes, fearing noise and safety concerns. The City of Littleton issued a stop-work order on the shooting range after owners began building it without required permits.

But Triple J’s parking arrangements were approved by the City of Littleton and the South Park Owners Association, Martinez wrote, meaning “the public’s interest via its mayor and city council has addressed the public’s concern regarding this type of business establishment and the parking infrastructure associated with its operation.”

“During this time (Triple J) justifiably relied upon those community and governmental entities which authorized the precise conduct RHR now complains of,” Martinez wrote.

“Meanwhile, (Triple J) is still paying rent, has delayed construction, and has incurred potential lost profits as a result of the delay of the shooting range’s grand opening.”

RHR’s concerns that Triple J customers will illegally use their parking spaces do not warrant an injunction, Martinez wrote, because RHR still has

the right to have offending vehicles towed.

“However, RHR does not want to enforce this legal remedy against those who illegally park on their property,” Martinez wrote. “There is no competent evidence before this Court that other tenants will be displaced or that JJJ customers will disregard the posted no-parking signage…RHR has an immediately available remedy.”

Martinez did not dismiss the lawsuit, however, and wrote that RHR’s allegation that Triple J breached a covenant that governs management of both neighboring properties may proceed to trial.

Triple J co-owner J.D. Murphree and the Lilischkes declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation.

However, a post on Triple J’s Facebook page regarding the judge’s ruling reads: “Get your guns ready, the time to shoot is getting very very close!!”

County to allow beekeeping, backyard chickens STAFF REPORT

The Arapahoe Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved new regulations to allow backyard bee and chicken keeping in unincorporated residential areas, as several cities in Arapahoe County already do, according to a news release from the county.

The new rules will become effective April 30 and are a result of a two-year, community-driven process to balance the needs and concerns of residents, the county news release said.

No special licenses are required for backyard chickens or beekeeping, the release said, and residents may need a building permit for certain improvements. Arapahoe County’s CSU Extension Program offers a variety of free

resources for individuals seeking to start backyard operations.

Under the new regulations, residents on lot sizes of 1-acre or less can have two to eight beehive boxes, provided owners adhere to design and setback standards, the release said.

Single-family residential units also can have up to four hens in coops that meet design and setback standards.

Owners must keep chickens in coops overnight, keep them on their property at all times, and control dust, debris and noise, the release said.

Homeowner associations have the ability to implement more restrictive policies than the county.

“The #1 Most Common Cause of Knee Pain: Patello-Femoral Joint Pain” - By Leading Denver Doctor of Physical Therapy, Brooke Olsen Denver - “I really can’t believe it’s finally gone!” This was a quote from a client of ours who had struggled with knee pain for years without knowing what was causing the pain in the first place. The thing that was never being addressed this whole time was how to “load” the joint differently to remove the stress on the patella-femoral joint. What do I mean by that? Keep reading and I’ll explain: This type of pain is a medical term for pain located where the knee cap lies in a groove on the thigh bone. Since the knee cap (patella) is a “looser” joint, it can get multiple stress points, either a pull from a muscle or a consistent movement that causes the tissues surrounding this joint to get irritated. When this builds up or pinches the tissue consistently, we will sense pain or breakdown of tissue. You’ve probably heard many people talk about the “tracking” of the knee cap that can be the issue - this would belong in this category as well.

Patello-Femoral Joint Pain is very common, but knowing how to properly care for it to get rid of the pain is the one thing I see people struggle with. Why? Because most people are told to just strengthen their quads (front of thighs). This is NOT the only helpful solution and in the case of the lady I mentioned above, it was the only thing she was told to do.

For today, let me give you a few helpful tips: • Tip #1: The strength of your hips needs to be addressed - This will be the missing piece in most cases!

• Tip #2: Check your ankles (if you have low arches, consider supporting them with inserts) • Tip #3: Avoid painful activities temporarily, then slowly sprinkle them back in intermittently when your pain is appropriate to take that progression.

Next week, I’m going to share why many people think surgery will help in this scenario, when there is a better solution to ending this long overdue on/off pain many people experience without having to have surgery. World lost in selfies is not a pretty picture

A

waiter goes back to a table and asks a young couple, “Is your food OK? You haven’t taken a picture of it yet?”

When the time comes for this decade to be characterized, it will be a snap.

It was estimated that each of us takes 10 digital photos a day, or 3,650 digital photos in a year. Times the number of people who have cellphones with built-in cameras, that’s 14 trillion photos worldwide annually.

Not all of them will be saved, however, for a very good reason that I will get to momentarily.

(When I say “we” I don’t mean me too. It’s just less accusatory than saying “you.”)

If a bear consumes a tourist who is trying to take a photo of himself with the bear, I tend to side with the bear.

When someone falls over a cliff while they are taking a selfie, I side with the cliff.

Every time I watch a major event on television, I see hundreds of amateur

photographers aiming their phones at the event.

Why? Because these moments are precious and few?

No. Because everyone else is doing it.

I just read an article to myself, and then I read it to the dog to get his reacCraig Marshall tion.

Harry is used to it Smith by now, and usually just angles his head and stares at me.

The headline in the Washington Post said, “More are seeking surgery to look better in selfies.”

There was a photo of a bunch of grinning idiots that went with the article, and the caption was, “The self-taken photograph is warping the confidence of many younger people in unsettling ways.”

QUIET DESPERATION

I am very, very glad I am not a younger people.

The article was written by Daria Hamrah, a plastic surgeon who has a practice in McLean, Va. Hamrah said the people who now come into her office are years younger than the ones who came into her office 10 years ago.

“There’s a reason for this radical and rapid change: selfies.”

She said one young woman came into her office and asked for “rounded feline eyes of the sort that some photo filters can add to selfies.”

When I read that to Harry, he angled his head to the other side.

“Once, a 20-year-old woman, having studied countless images of herself, said she needed a face-lift; no 20-yearold needs a face-lift.”

Harry and I both have prominent noses. (Keep in mind, he’s a dachshund.)

ed leaders this year. We are hearing lots of complaints from Republicans who are disappointed to have lost the power they took for granted for many years. I suggest we look instead at the talent and dedication that is emerging.

At the state level, Democrats are using their new majority to legislate protections for health, safety and fairness for our citizens. An example of the new leadership style is Rep. Meg Froelich (HD3). Since taking office in January, she has been instrumental in passing a package of bills that includes:  Improvements in health cost transparency.  Protection against gun violence risk.  Transparency in law enforcement investigations.  Defense of the environment and public health against polluters.  Protection of rights for gay and transgender people.

Most recently, Rep. Froelich and three other Democrats sponsored HB 19-1233, which would direct the state insurance commissioner to establish affordability standards for primary care and to re-

quire insurance companies to improve reimbursement for primary care. It would also provide incentives for value rather than volume — in other words, will my doctor be rewarded for helping me stay healthy or for giving me lots of treatment and medicine?

Rep. Froelich has also begun a series of training sessions for adults responding to mental health crisis situations: a kind of CPR for mental illness emergencies. All this in four months!

Let’s give Rep. Froelich and other new legislators a chance to continue the work of making Colorado a healthier and happier place to live.

Paula DeJohn Aurora Standing up for Froelich As a proud supporter of Rep. Meg Froelich, I want to correct several falsehoods in a recent letter to the editor.

First, the sex-ed bill includes the portion of the 2013 law already in statute that requires school officials to give parents “a detailed, substantive outline of the topics and materials to be presented during the human sexu-

ality instruction” as well as a notice explaining how to opt out of the classes. I’m a parent, and this makes complete sense to me.

Second, SB 181 is a local control bill that allows communities to set their own safety standards around oil and gas development. It prioritizes the protection of public safety, health, welfare and the environment in the regulation of the oil and gas industry. Again, as a parent who cares about my family’s health and safety, this matters to me.

And third, the National Popular Vote bill ensures that the will of Colorado voters will be heard loud and clear in presidential elections. It also ensures candidates will have to campaign in more states, which I think is a good thing.

And lastly, recalls are for egregious misconduct in office, not because you’re throwing a tantrum over how someone voted. They are a waste of time and money, especially against Rep. Froelich, a longtime advocate for Arapahoe County.

Alan (Al) Duckwall Wilson Alan (Al) Duckwall Wilson of Highlands Ranch, CO, passed away on April 8, 2019 in Mill Vista Lodge at Wind Crest. He was 87.

Al always referred to himself as “just a simple man.” However, those that knew him admired him as someone “who didn’t often speak, but when he did it was filled with wisdom and people listened.”

He had a serene, quiet dignity and was very modest about his lifetime achievements.

Al was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn Metz Wilson. He is survived by his second wife, Dian Heacock Wilson, his children, Wendy Habicht (Hank), Nancy Backes (Richard), Steve Elder (Jane), Sam Elder (Julia), Scot Elder (Brooke), his grandchildren, Jennifer Sanders, Caroline Habicht, Andrew Backes, Phil Backes, Courtney Backes, Emily Elder, Kit Elder, Taylor Moore (Evan), Cameron Elder, Jordan Elder, and Lance Elder.

Al was born in Salina, Kansas, on July 16, 1931 to Francis and Vesta Wilson.

His younger sister, Ann, followed, in 1935. He spent most of his childhood in Ellsworth, Kansas, and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1949.

Al graduated from Kansas State University in 1953 with a degree in Business Administration. While at KSU, he was in the Air Force ROTC Program. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant USAF upon graduation. He received his pilot wings at Laredo AFB. In 1954, after completing Advanced Flying Training at Nellis AFB, he was chosen to be one of the first Air Training Officers (ATO) at the interim site of the US Air Force Academy at Lowry AFB. In 1957, Al transferred to the Colorado Air National Guard at Buckley AFB and was promoted to Captain while

in the Colorado ANG. During the Cuban Missile Crisis he was called back to active duty but was not deployed.

Following his military service, Al worked as a government contract administrator for Martin Marietta in Denver, Emerson Electric in St. Louis, and Computer Sciences Corporation in Falls Church, Virginia.

In 1979, Al realized his life-long dream of owning his own business when he returned to Littleton and purchased Pronto Print in Englewood. He sold the business in 1985 when he retired.

Al was active in his retirement, playing golf, skiing, biking and hiking, and serving as a Stephens Minister at his church.

In addition, he volunteered with SCORE, mentoring small business owners. Al’s final gift was the donation of his eyes and

brain for research and his tissues to help and heal others.

A special thanks to the outstanding staff at Mill Vista Lodge Wind Crest and the Denver Hospice. You people are special in your love and in our hearts.

Standout buildings dot Denver, suburbs

s the tide of bland, boxy apartment complexes rolls through metro Denver amid its housing boom, sightseers looking for a respite need not roam far.

Historic buildings offer a change of pace from “empty architecture,” said Stephen Leonard, a history professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

“We get a lot of variety from historical architecture that we have,” said Leonard, a widely known voice on Colorado history who has taught at MSU for five decades. “I think our sensibility, our ability to appreciate differences and to understand beauty would be considerably lessened if we didn’t have the variety of some very fine architecture we have in Denver.”

Paraphrasing Winston Churchill, Leonard said, “We shape our buildings, and then our buildings shape us.”

“I think they tell us a lot about the tastes of the period. You look at the flamboyance of Victorian architecture, which is really sort of a grabbag term for the 1860s-90s,” Leonard said. “Those buildings combine different styles. They sort of reflect the exuberance of a nouveau riche class.

There’s not much restraint in them.”

What followed was a move away

The historic administration building at the former Colorado Heights University in southwest Denver in 2017.

Curious eyes can find styles from that era and beyond around the Denver region. Here’s a look at a few buildings still standing.

Westminster Bell Tower In 1986, the City of Westminster wanted to celebrate its 75th birthday with a “grand public monument,” according to city spokeswoman Jodie Carroll.

The city decided to incorporate it into the design of the new city hall, which was set to open in 1988.

“Since our city name is Westminster, staff thought it fitting to have a grand bell tower such as Big Ben in Westminster, London,” Carroll

The tower’s design, including the pyramid at the top, were taken from Big Ben. The city wasn’t named for the area in London, though: The area’s original name, Harris Park, was changed in the early 1900s to honor Westminster University, which was where the Belleview Christian School building now stands, Carroll said.

That’s just a few minutes southeast of the bell tower.

The tower stands at 4800 W. 92nd Ave. in Westminster.

Enchantment grows at Chatfield Farms

More than a century ago, in 1866, pioneer Frank Hildebrand purchased 160 acres of farmland along Deer Creek for $500 — in what is now south Jefferson County. The property included a log house, according to horticulturist Jennifer Trunce, who spoke to the Littleton Garden Club about Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield Farms, the now-700-acre property adjoining Chatfield State Park and Reservoir. It was set aside after the disastrous 1965 flood, which affected a large part of the south suburban area.

The Army Corps of Engineers controls the land and declared it a floodplain where no new building is permitted. Denver Botanic Gardens was allowed to manage the land, designated as Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield.

Existing buildings were grandfathered in … The original thought was to build a huge arboretum, with more varieties of trees than anywhere between Chicago and the West Coast.

Volunteers led schoolchildren through natural areas of wetlands, riparian landscape and fields, looking at native plants, birds and wildlife. Gradually a native plant garden developed, the historic farms were restored and a variety of defined types of gardens were planted instead, creating a fine spot for families and individuals to explore — during special events or just on any day.

migrant, was one of the first pioneers to settle in the area, and Deer Creek was the only source of water, running through the length of the property.

There was a log cabin on the land when he purchased it. He and his wife, Elizabeth, raised Hereford cattle and grew vegetables and sugar beets.

The Hildebrands built a larger house around the cabin, then in 1915, a separate large farmhouse, which stands today. A milking barn and other outbuildings were added. A cutting garden is planted near it and heirloom gardens.

Son Francis Hildebrand continued with the farming and added a granary, wood and blacksmith’s shops and ice house.

Francis also moved the Deer Creek Schoolhouse onto the farm when Chatfield Dam was built — or it would have been submerged. It is used as a visitors center, for classes, for brides and programs …

The owners were evicted by the Army

Corps of Engineers after the 1965 flood, as were the owners of the nearby Green Ranch, known for raising thousands of white Peking ducks, which they shipped to restaurants across the nation. The two-story, white Green House was renovated in 2016 and now holds 30 offices, Trunce said.

A Wayne Christian Garden honors the first director appointed in the 1970s to begin organizing this new operation.

Special gardens surround the farms, including the Mary Washburn Orchard and Heritage Garden. Some fields are cultivated with corn and pumpkins — see the Big Pumpkin Festival in October — and seven acres are devoted to crops for the Chatfield CSA (community supported agriculture) program, which supplies regular boxes of vegetables, fruits and flowers to subscribers and farm stands. The large lavender garden matured enough to start holding a Lavender Festival last year, which drew a huge crowd and will be repeated.

One is allowed to bring food into the garden, so families may want to consider a summer picnic lunch at this pleasant spot.

Beyond the farms and developed gardens is a large natural area with three clearly marked trails towards the wetlands, where native plants, birds and wildlife await.

Six local students receive awards for mental health advocacy STAFF REPORT

Six high school and college students are receiving scholarships from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Arapahoe and Douglas counties for their exemplary dedication and commitment to important work in the behavioral health field.

The scholarships will be presented at the Behavioral Health Seeds of Hope Scholarship Awards Event on Thursday, April 25, from 6-8 p.m. at the Hilton Denver Inverness, 200 Inverness Drive

The societal stigma associated with mental health and illness remains the biggest impediment to people for seeking and getting the proper medical care.

Developers share project details for vacant Kmart site HOW A PUD WORKS

Amid some fears in the community that more multi-family housing could crop up at Englewood’s vacant Kmart site, developers showed residents a plan for the property that involves a gym, retailers and — ideally — local food or drink businesses.

“What’s going to make a successful retail shopping center?” said Zeb Ripple, a partner at Capital Pacific, a company involved with the proposed project at the Kmart site. “Experience for the consumer: a sense of community, local tenants, something that’s going to create a buzz.”

Experiential retail — business the internet can’t easily replicate — is what’s surviving in the brick-andmortar world, Ripple told an audience of about a dozen residents at a public meeting to update the neighborhood on the project.

“That’s the road map we’re trying to follow,” Ripple said.

And apartments aren’t part of that plan: At the meeting at the nearby Colorado’s Finest High School of Choice, an attendee asked if developers plan to build apartments in 10 or 15 years.

“Our lease is through the year 2070,” so that’s not an option, said Jon Suddarth, vice president of real estate for The William Warren Group, which owns the brand StorQuest, the self-storage facility hoping to take up

Planned-unit developments allow for a mix of possible types of properties that a city’s normal zoning — rules for what can be built where — wouldn’t allow.

First, neighborhood meetings allow the developer to hear input and questions from neighbors. Next, the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, an appointed group of citizens, listens to opinions from residents in a public hearing. The commission can recommend city council approve the plan, deny it or approve it with conditions — suggestions of what to change.

Citizens can comment in another public hearing in front of council, which then has two rounds of voting — or readings — to decide to approve, approve with conditions or deny the plan.

Some residents have been concerned the vacant lot would become a “magnet for homeless activity,” with people parking and sleeping in cars, Ripple said.

“We fenced off the back. We started to have security services patrol twice a night, and they still do,” Ripple said, adding dozens of cars have been towed. “We’re doing our best to con-

APRIL WATER MAIN FLUSHING PROGRAM The City of Englewood Utilities Department will conduct its annual fire hydrant flushing program starting April 22.

During this week, the water mains throughout the City will be flushed between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.

The Water Distribution crews will isolate sections of pipe by shutting off valves to connecting pipes, then opening fire hydrants to full volume to clean residue and sediment from the water mains. The resulting surge of water flushes mineral accumulations from the main.

This sediment may be forced into the connecting service lines.

Residents may experience a flow of brown water from their taps during this time. If this occurs, turn on cold water only until the taps are flowing clear.

Crews will be unable to provide prior notification of the daily flushing schedules. Residents are advised to check their cold water on a daily basis during the week of April 22 to determine if their systems have been affected by the flushing.

The site as a whole looks to bring an upscale look to the well-worn area at South Broadway and Belleview Avenue. Three or four tenants would take up small pieces of the building’s northeast corner, with one or two other retailer-oriented users in midsized parts in its center. That’s aside from StorQuest and Chuze Fitness, which has signed a long-term lease for the building’s south side. Chuze has started construction and could open in June, Ripple said.

Those few tenants in the smaller pieces of the building would ideally be retailers or restaurants, according to the plan for the project.

The proposed mix of uses would require the City of Englewood to approve a planned-unit development application, which green-lights uses that aren’t otherwise allowed for a property’s specific zoning rules. That process will take months, and six to nine months of construction could ensue after that.

A public hearing and vote by the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission — citizens who make development recommendations to city council — is expected in April. Another public hearing in front of city council and

Because top-tier retailers are closing stores and shrinking their floor plans, Ripple said, the project opts for a strategy of making the retail spaces smaller by taking up the back of the building with the self-storage facility. That business can offset costs of redesigning the front of the building, and the project also aims to “green and beautify” the lot, he added.

Local food, bar and coffee establishments in the metro area may be candidates to occupy space at the front of the building, developers have said.

The developers also fielded concerns about the possibility of more of the building turning into self-storage if other types of businesses don’t show interest. They’d be open to limiting the storage to about 60,000 square feet in the plan, Suddarth said.

The meeting followed a previous neighborhood meeting with the developers June 7 that discussed the plan.

About 50 came to that presentation, which took place inside the former Kmart.

Security: This is such a vast industry, that employment options are always available. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) industry is expected to grow by 12 percent through the year 2026, which is faster than the average.

Variety: If you don’t like working on the rails or specifically on a construction site, the good news is blue-collar trades expand across a variety of categories, expanding into electricity, carpentry, mechanics, maintenance, machine operators and ground maintenance.

Cheaper education: Many blue-collar jobs only require a high-school diploma to begin work.

Others, such as masonry work or auto mechanics need only to go through a trade school that caters to the specific field. This turns into a certification of completion rather than an expensive degree at a university. The costs difference in education is huge.

Job satisfaction: There is a certain sense of pride in getting your hands dirty and building, creating or maintaining something.

According to a 2018 Harris Poll, which surveyed blue-collar workers across the nation, 86 percent said they are satisfied/happy with their jobs.

Barnhouse Tap bar aims to ‘redefine Broadway’ Local owners want businesses to foster ‘community spirit’ on thoroughfare

ABOUT THE BAR Barnhouse Tap opened Dec. 21 at 4361 S. Broadway. It features 40 rotating taps of beer and cider, all from Colorado-based companies, and 18 wines on tap. About 45 percent of its patrons are repeat customers, and many in the crowd are from the surrounding neighborhood, its owners say.

Picture a lower South Broadway in Englewood where pedestrians leisurely walk and bike, a farmer’s market doles out food in an open lot, art covers more building walls and a rooftop patio shows patrons mountain views.

That vision isn’t complete yet, but Jason Sakry and Dagan Thomas say they’ve taken a dead patch on South Broadway and given it life again.

“We’d love to have Englewood influence on the Broadway renewal,” said Sakry, a former Englewood Schools Board of Education member. “We just want to encourage local businesses and community members to redefine Broadway as the renewal moves south from Denver.”

The wave of redevelopment can be a good thing for the neighborhood, argues Sakry, an Englewood resident who co-owns a multi-unit business property on the 4300 block of South Broadway, near Quincy Avenue.

“We met on the school board,” said Thomas, also a former board member and Englewood resident. “We jokingly

said, ‘Hey, what if we developed a block?’ ” The rest, it appears, is history in motion: The two started Working Capital, a property management company that owns the building where they opened Barnhouse Tap, a bar on the long stretch of Broadway south of Hampden Avenue that’s home to a hodgepodge of businesses.

And their first stab at that goal keeps in mind what Sakry called the atmosphere of “a small town surrounded by the big city.”

“We want businesses to foster that community spirit — neighbors meeting neighbors,” said Sakry, 41, as opposed to establishments that serve the passing traffic. “We want to encourage people to spend time at a place (with) face-to-face connection.

of our customers live within a few blocks,” Sakry said.

The bar’s building materials themselves carry a sense of community.

Sakry’s friend in Minnesota had a barn, and Sakry, Thomas and a team helped tear it down over two months and took materials back to Englewood.

The wood at Barnhouse Tap comes from that barn, and the tin on the bar and patio once was the barn’s roofing.

The sweeping, barn-themed mural on the side of the building — easily among the most notable features of Broadway for miles around — also comes with an added thrust of meaning.

It’s a nod to “embrace that Englewood is an art town,” Thomas, 41, said. Along with murals on the other side of Broadway, the partners hope the block can keep “battling beige” and liven up the thoroughfare.

But they’re also thinking bigger: They aim to contribute to a more pedestrian- and bike-friendly Englewood, hoping to dovetail with potential changes to encourage a more active Broadway corridor.

Bruce Stahlman, chief financial officer for Arc Thrift Stores, will receive the Distinguished Disability Leadership Award from Arc, according to a news release.

Stahlman will be given the award at Arc’s Born to Be Me gala fundraiser Sept. 7 at the Hyatt Regency Denver at the Convention Center. The award is designed to honor leaders in Colorado who give their hearts, their souls, their time and their passion to advocating for people with disabilities.

Stahlman has been the CFO of Arc Thrift Stores since 2006. He is the father of twin sons, Eric and Mark Stahlman, who lived with cerebral palsy. According to the release, he has worked with and served on numerous boards and organizations, including the Arapahoe Early Childhood Network Board, the White Notebook Group, Littleton City Council, the Colorado School for the Blind, Littleton Public Schools Mental Health Task Force and the Atlantis Community Foundation.

Stahlman also has given testimony before the state Legislature, served as a fundraiser for Easter Seals, and in 2013, he and his family were recognized by the Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition as Family of the Year.

The gala honors Arc ambassadors and employees and features a live and silent auction to raise money and awareness for individuals living with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Colorado. Since 2005, the gala has raised more than $2 million for people in Colorado.

The chairs of this year’s gala are Lloyd Lewis, president and CEO of arc Thrift Stores, and his wife, Claire; and Terry Vitale, founder of New West Publishing and former publisher of Colorado Expressions magazine.

“Bruce is a great pillar of our community,” Lewis said in the release. “And he is also the financial brains behind Arc’s growth and success over the last years. We are most appreciative of Bruce’s dedication and focus on the business needs of Arc while gallantly fighting glioblastoma cancer.”

Reutzel cited Sources of Strength, a nationwide suicide prevention program enacted at LPS in recent years, and a slate of security and threat assessment reforms, including better training and use of Safe2Tell, an anonymous reporting system.

“We’ve implemented a majority of the findings” from the 2016 report, Reutzel said.

“Would we love to do more? Absolutely.

We’ve done what our dollars allow us to do.”

The group alleges that eight Arapahoe High School students have died by suicide since Davis’ murder. An LPS spokesperson said the number is six, compared to one student suicide in the same time period at Heritage High School and none at Littleton High.

Ewert called the relatively higher number of suicides at Arapahoe an anomaly.

“I’m as frightened around student suicide as any parent,” Ewert said. “I don’t have answers to the epidemic of teen suicide. No one does. But we catch kids who have suicidal ideation all the time through Safe2Tell.”

The group’s accusations are frustrating to Tamara Highsmith, who has two children enrolled at Arapahoe and whose eldest daughter was a student during the 2013 shooting.

Highsmith said her children have encountered “nothing but support, kindness and encouragement” from Arapahoe faculty and administrators.

Highsmith’s middle daughter has experienced mental health issues and suicidal ideation, Highsmith said, adding she’s pleased with the school’s response.

DAVID GILBERT “The school counseling department has gone above and beyond to connect us with doctors, helped us get an (Individualized Education Plan), and all sorts of things I would not have known how to navigate on my own,” Highsmith said. “As long as the parent is willing to engage, the school is more than willing to reach out.”

Peck said coming weeks will flesh out the group’s concerns in greater detail, as they plan to go public with the results of the survey. The survey had received more than 1,000 responses as of April 9, Peck said.

“I can tell you, though, that regardless of what this survey says, the leaders of this coalition will have the same view: We’ve got to have leadership change,” Peck said. “We’re just in the early stages here.”

Arapahoe High community ‘honors loved ones lost’ Suicide-prevention walk draws hundreds

T

he push to end stigma around talking about mental health had several hundred boots on the ground carrying the message in the Arapahoe High School neighborhood.

“By walking with us, you honor the memory of the loved ones you’ve lost,” said Ry Renshaw, an Arapahoe senior, addressing the crowd before a suicide-prevention walk that would start at the campus.

Renshaw and Brooke Smiley, also an Arapahoe senior, organized the Out of the Darkness walk with help from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a national organization.

“By showing up, you are letting others know they are not alone,” Smiley said, telling the crowd its efforts show that mental health is as important as physical health.

Smiley and Renshaw organized the April 14 walk after two Arapahoe students died by suicide within just days of each other at the end of September and start of October.

Littleton Public Schools has said six Arapahoe students have died by suicide since late 2013.

The community hasn’t forgotten.

The crowd of walkers likely included nearly 1,000 based on registration and walk-up participants, said Sheri Cole, the suicide-prevention foundation’s Colorado area director.

Many wore blue shirts in memory of a Powell Middle School student who died by suicide in recent years, and students from Rock Canyon and Valor Christian high schools in Highlands Ranch, Cherry Creek High School, and other area schools came to participate, said Kyra Smiley, Brooke’s mother, who worked the registration table.

At more than $74,000 raised — shattering its original goal of $12,000 — the walk was one of the suicide-prevention foundation’s biggest on-campus walks in the country in 2019, in both fundraising and size, Cole said. The “Out of the Darkness Campus Walks” program is a student fundraising series aimed at engaging youths and young adults, according to the foundation,

the girls for their initiative on this,” Pramenko said of Smiley and Renshaw. “They been very close to very hard, hard situations in losing their friends this year, but even in past years, to suicide.”

Pramenko pointed to the school district’s Sources of Strength initiative as a resource, a host of programs that encourage connection with parts of life — like family, friends, mentors and healthy activities — that can combat depression and anxiety. Sources of Strength is a widespread project in North America.

Simply talking about mental health is a step Pramenko hopes more people will be willing to take.

“I’ve read a couple different places (that) kids are comfortable with it, but adults aren’t,” Pramenko said.

“If someone shows up and maybe never talked about mental health before and walks a 5K with one of our young people and realizes it’s OK to talk about, one by one, we can work on spreading this.”

The idea for the walk came from the loss of friends, Renshaw said, but she hopes others can take steps so a suicide doesn’t have to affect them.

“I hope the conversation around mental health becomes proactive rather than reactive” as a result of the walk, Renshaw said.

Organizers with the foundation hope the event can continue annually at Arapahoe.

“My hope is that there’s a grade below us who has a passion for (raising awareness) and can make it an annual thing,” Smiley said. “And that students can feel comfortable talking about their mental health.”

CCM reporter receives Public Health Hero award Tri-County Health Department honors 10 for their work in promoting and improving public health STAFF REPORT

Colorado Community Media reporter Alex DeWind, who reported a series of stories on the state of mental health in Douglas County, was honored April 9 as one of 10 recipients of Tri-County Health Department’s 2019 Public Health Hero awards.

Tri-County Health Department, which serves Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties, recognizes individuals and organizations that are not in the public health profession but have worked to improve and promote public health.

“These are people who are doing God’s work, who are not paid to do it — at least from the public health profession,” said John Douglas, TriCounty’s executive director.

DeWind was a lead reporter on a team that spent 2018 exploring what mental health looked like in Douglas County. Her work focused on the stigma associated with mental health, barriers to care, youth suicide, maternal and pregnancy-related depression, the effect of technology and social media on our youth, and how mental health issues are affecting the role of law enforcement.

“Alex … has demonstrated a commitment to framing stories that would be heard and make a difference to her

readers,” Douglas said. She and Colorado Community Media “have been a vital partner in increasing the conversation regarding mental health.”

DeWind, 26, who has been with Colorado Community Media since 2015, said she was extremely honored by the award.

“This series was, by far, the most meaningful project I’ve contributed to in my career as a journalist,” she said. “I got to explore a real, raw side of humanity that we as a society tend to want to hide. What made this series so powerful were the incredibly strong people who were kind enough to share their stories of struggle and triumph around mental health, and the leaders in the public health field who are passionate about finding solutions to the cracks in mental health care.”

Highlands Ranch Mansion A small farmhouse built in 1891 eventually became the Highlands Ranch Mansion, a public property surrounded by historic barns, ranch houses, corrals and pastures.

“Through the years, each owner expanded the residence, adding their own style,” said Sherry Eppers, spokeswoman for the Highlands Ranch Metro District. “The unique details from different architectural periods can be found on both the exterior and interior of the building.”

The mansion was a residence until the late 1970s, and many Denver-area socialites called it home, Eppers said. Today, it’s a gathering place for celebrations, weddings and private events. The property was conveyed to the metro district in 2010.

“The mansion is a link to Colorado’s rich history,” Eppers said. “Residents enjoy learning about the history of the mansion’s families and the tradition of ranching in the area.”

Loretto Heights campus Perched atop a high point in Denver, the former Loretto Heights College building is visible for miles around in the metro area.

The 70-acre campus at 3001 S. Federal Blvd. was once a Catholic college. First named Loretto Heights Academy, it grew out of an effort by the Sisters of Loretto dating back to the late 1800s. Its reddish-brown administration building with a tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The campus became Teikyo Loretto Heights University in 1989 and Colorado Heights University in 2009. It closed around fall 2017 after an insufficient student population made it difficult to sustain the school, according to the university.

Concerned about the historical value of the campus and its future, several local residents held meetings throughout 2017, and meetings were

also held in 2018 and this January.

The developer who bought the property from the university, Westside Investment Partners, has announced it will renovate Pancratia Hall on the campus — once home to a dormitory — into affordable housing units, according to a January news release.

Westside has also said it is committed to preserving the administration building, the adjoining chapel and the cemetery, where dozens of nuns were interred.

Jefferson County government building First called “a veritable Taj Mahal” by detractors who opposed the county’s spending on the expensive building, the Jefferson County Admin-

istration and Courts Facility is now known lovingly by county employees as “the Taj,” according to Ronda Frazier, county archivist.

The county needed a new building amid population growth. Between 1972 and 1990, the courts’ caseload increased by almost 500 percent, and services had to be scattered throughout the county, Frazier said.

“The new building provided space for almost all of the county’s operations and was designed to provide services to citizens all in one location,” Frazier said.

The large, dome-anchored building at 100 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden opened in 1993, with architecture meant to mesh with the surrounding landscape. The wheat-colored brick matches the clay in nearby terrain, and the maroon granite used was inspired by the soil and indigenous sandstone, Frazier said.

“It was designed to reflect the life and architecture of the county’s namesake, Thomas Jefferson,” Frazier said. “The central atrium of the building was styled after the rotunda Jefferson designed for the University of Virginia and also the Jefferson Memorial rotunda in Washington, D.C.” But its most interesting aspect for Frazier is its butterfly-like shape when viewed from above, and its curved “wings” makes it appear smaller than it is.

The building “was designed by the architects to create a focal point,” Frazier said, “for what is a big, diverse governmental organization.”

With less outgo comes a sigh of relief, as retirees may be able to delay taking social security until age 70, pay off high interest credit card debt, allow time for the retirement portfolio to grow, and find a myriad of other

uses for tax-free proceeds of a reverse mortgage.

race Cadorette likes being a boss on the field.

Cadorette is a senior goalkeeper for the top-ranked Arapahoe High School soccer team and knows coaches on the sidelines and teammates on the field look for leadership from her.

“I kind of like being able to control the field in my own way,” said Cadorette. “Even though I might not have a direct impact, I’m kind of behind everyone’s decisionmaking, and no matter if it is a game where I get a lot of touches or a game where I don’t get many, I’m always involved from the other end of the field down to my end.”

Cadorette was one of starters on the basketball team last winter but sprained her ankle during the closing part of the season.

“I’d probably say I’m more of a keeper than a basketball player but it’s pretty even,” related Cadorette. “The way I see the court on the basketball court, where I see my teammates, that has helped me with soccer because it is easier for me to read the other team and see how my team moves.”

COACH’S TAKE: ‘She is an incredible athlete and one of the more intense competitors that I have coached on both the boys and girls sides. She has incredible hands and obviously basketball helps her with that and she has very, very quick feet. She’s a poster child for the benefit of having a multi-sport athlete. That dual training has benefited her and obviously us.’

Q&A with Cadorette Who is your favorite athlete and why?

I would say my sister (Amanda) because she is very similar to me.

She played basketball and soccer in high school and growing up as well. She had two ACL surgeries in high school. She just kind of inspired me that no matter how many days you are out here and how much you want to go home, it’s all worth it.

What or who motivates you most to excel in soccer?

My teammates and my coaches, I have the goal to play well every time I’m out, but they are the ones that form the bigger goal like a state championship, and usually the better we are playing, the more fun we are having, and I love playing with them.

What would be a perfect performance in soccer?

It would be shutout and it wouldn’t matter if I touched the ball 20 times or once.

What do you like to do away from sports and school?

I really enjoy the mountains. I love to snowboard, I ski, too, and hiking. I love dogs, so hiking with dogs.

What are your plans after high school?

I am going to go to CU-Boulder and hopefully play club soccer and study business or biology or chemistry.

What is your most memorable moment in high school sports?

Sophomore year when we made it to the state championship. I just remember the feeling when we lost that game and seeing all the seniors’ faces and my own heart was broken. I just really want to get back there and have some redemption.

What is the toughest shot for you to defend as a keeper?

It is definitely easier for me to stretch out and dive because I feel like I am more athletic and agile.

My weakness is definitely the high balls and hitting them over my head because I’m short and don’t have much of a vertical leap.

Your feelings on the U.S. National Women’s soccer team filing suit for equal pay with the men?

I have mixed feelings. Since I am a girl, I feel we should get paid just as much, but at the same time, the men bring in so much more revenue, and I guess that’s why they get paid more. If the women brought in just as much, then why aren’t they getting paid as much?

And rescheduling postponed events isn’t as easy as it might seem.

“It’s a pain,” Douglas County High School Athletic Director Jeff Gardella said about the rescheduling process.

Agreeing on OVERTIME makeup dates, obtaining umpires and officials, securing venues and working around other school functions are just a few of the details that have to be ironed Jim Benton out by coaches and athletic directors in finding makeup dates.

The latest delay caused by a spring snowstorm was April 10 and 11, which brought back memories for many people about other bad weather situations during the spring.

Most games around the area were postponed on April 10.

Boys swimming, an indoor sport, is the only one that doesn’t have to be concerned about having meets postponed by weather.

Baseball is one of the spring sports that faces complications in the event of bad weather.

“You get into league (play) like everybody is right now and you don’t want to play back-toback days because it is messing with your pitching in baseball,” Gardella said.

With the shortage of officials in sports like baseball, lacrosse and soccer, that often eliminates possible makeup dates because no officials or umpires are available.

And for lacrosse and soccer games, with several schools using districtwide stadiums, games often have to be scheduled around other games. Often, lower-level games have to be canceled rather than postponed.

Seven Douglas County School District soccer and lacrosse games were postponed on April 11 because the district doesn’t like to plow or brush snow off the artificial turf of its stadiums to avoid ripping seams and having to later redistribute rubber pellets back onto the field.

County earns national recognition for digital innovation STAFFREPORT

Arapahoe County received the Digital Edge 50 award for HSConnects, the business management software created by the county and used in human services, according to a news release.

The recognition is given to organizations that have executed digital transformation initiatives with significant, measurable business impact, the release said. It was presented by International Data Group, a technology media, data and marketing services company, during the Agenda19 conference March 18-20.

“I was honored to accept the Agenda19 Digital Edge 50 Award on behalf of Arapahoe County,” Arapahoe County Commissioner Nancy Sharpe said in the release. “Only one quarter of organizations that apply are awarded

partners hope for a restaurant, perhaps one interested in a rooftop patio, as a tenant for a part of their building that becomes available later this year.

Some outsiders who decided to drop in to Barnhouse on an early March afternoon were Grant Dawkins, 29, and Katy Robinson, 28, both from Denver.

They came for the first time after hearing about the bar from friends who enjoyed it, Robinson said.

“It feels,” Dawkins said, “really homey.”

While working with companies across a multitude of industries I have seen organizations that have an operationally driven culture, or a sales driven culture, or a fiscally responsible driven culture.

Some endeavor to have all three, or maybe one dominant culture supported by subcultures within the company.

None of these are bad or wrong, they just sometimes miss the people driven culture.

When challenged with this question, executives may make bold statements such as, “Our people are our most important asset.” And that is awesome, truly awesome. If it were true. Executive and leaders want to do the right thing when it comes to their people.

They are not intentionally trying to mislead anyone, and they are not maliciously or purposely trying to ignore their people. The truth is they just have to make hard decisions. We all do, don’t we? The question is, where does the compromise stop? Hopefully, we don’t compromise our people.

In the quest for a return on investment, have we forgotten about the people who truly are the essence of success for any company or organization, large or small? We can have the greatest and

History maker Westminster’s Jennifer Kupcho, the two-time 4A state champion from Jefferson Academy, the defending NCAA champion from Wake Forest and the

Kupcho was the first winner of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur with a come-from-behind, final-round 67 when she went 5-under-par for the final six holes.

She had rounds of 68, 71 and 67 for a 206 total and a four-stroke victory in the tournament, which was the first time women have competed at Augusta, the site of the famed Masters.
