In fact, none missed an issue during the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak. And we will not miss an issue because of COVID-19 either.

Last week, the news staff kept you up-to-date on breaking news stories, but also brought you human interest stories on how teachers and students are transitioning to online learning, the challenges experienced by your local grocery store employees, how area hospitals are preparing for more patients, how churches are keeping their congregations spiritually connected, the virus’s effect on local businesses and its impact on seniors.

First confirmed case of coronavirus on sheriff’s personnel, office announces

An Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office deputy has tested positive for COVID-19, the office announced in a March 27 news release.

“The deputy is being supported and resources are available to the deputy and their family,” the office said in the release. “The sheriff ’s office is not experiencing significant staffing issues at this time.”

The Arapahoe County Jail has no positive or presumed positive COVID-19 cases among the inmate population, according to the release.

The sheriff ’s office identified those who were in close proximity to the deputy who tested positive.

“Those individuals have been notified, and we are taking necessary precautions to monitor them,” the release said.

‘This is far beyond the flu’ Littleton Adventist bracing for COVID-19 onslaught; doctor says take it seriously and stay home

As the number of COVID-19 infections ramps up, Littleton Adventist Hospital is bracing for the impact.

“This isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon,” said Dr. Mark Elliott, the president of medical staff at the south Littleton hospital. “We’re all somewhat fearful this is the calm before the storm. It’s like a mass casualty event in slow motion.”

The hospital has been preparing for Elliott a surge since early

March, Elliott said, overhauling two floors of the hospital to isolate positive coronavirus cases and converting 20 rooms to negative airflow, for a total of 30.

All elective surgeries, like joint replacements, weight loss surgeries or cosmetic surgeries, have been canceled for now.

“I want to make it clear how dangerous this is,” said Elliott, who has been at the hospital for decades, including through the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, and still works in the emergency department. “People keep saying this is on par with the flu. That’s not true at all.”

Fewer than 1% of patients need hospitalization for the flu, Elliott said, compared to 15% to 20% for those with COVID-19. Of those, about a quarter will need intensive care. Of those, half need ventilation. COVID-19 is also far more transferable than the flu.

A typical flu season can fill area hospitals, Elliott said, meaning a surge of COVID-19 patients could overwhelm the health care system.

“This is far beyond the flu,” Elliott said. “We’re seeing the edges of this now, but we don’t know how bad it’s going to be. It’s got us all anxious.

Will we be able to keep up? By staying home, you are saving lives.”

Elliott declined to say how many COVID-19 cases the hospital has seen so far, or whether the hospital has had any deaths from the disease. He said some staff members have shown symptoms and have been told to stay home until they are no longer symptomatic, though he declined to say how many.

Elliott spoke with Colorado Community Media on March 26, the day the state health department reported that Colorado had amassed nearly 1,500 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 24 deaths.

“At this point, it’s fair to say every hospital, urgent care and walk-in clinic in the state has probably seen cases, whether they know it or not,”

ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE IF YOU HAVE COVID-19 SYMPTOMS

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, first call a health care provider, clinic or hospital. The provider will give instructions on where to go to for care and testing.

If instructed to seek care, follow the precautionary advice of the medical provider before going into any health facility, the state advises.

Certain people are at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19, including older adults, especially those over 80; and those with chronic medical conditions such as heart, lung or kidney disease. Older adults who have chronic medical conditions are at the highest risk.

Illness can be severe and require hospitalization, but most individuals recover by resting, drinking plenty of liquids, and taking pain- and fever-reducing medications, according to the state.

Other advice from public health officials: • Stay home if you are sick.

• Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces such as desks, phones, doorknobs and rails.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

Elliott said.

Doctors and hospital administrators are communicating regularly with local, state and federal officials, Elliott said, and the hospital system’s incident command centers are operating 12 hours a day.

Staff are already reusing personal protective equipment like masks and gowns that would normally be discarded between patients, Elliott said. The hospital is “gladly” accepting donations of gloves and face masks from the public, he said — though they don’t accept homemade masks.

The hospital currently has 22 ventilators, he said, and can source more from within the Centura hospital network.

Littleton Adventist is only administering COVID-19 tests to patients who require hospitalization, Elliott said, both in an effort to conserve tests and to not overwhelm state laboratories that process the tests.

The turnaround time on tests is currently 5-7 days, he said.

Patients who don’t require hospitalization are sent home and instructed to self-isolate until they are free of symptoms for three days.

Those who could be sent home but live in a high-risk environment like a nursing home are held at the hospital until the test results are returned.

Staff are feeling the stress. The extra gear required to attend patients makes each visit take longer. Staff are concerned about getting the virus themselves, or worse, taking it home to their families. Most change their clothes before they go home and don’t allow family members to handle clothing from the hospital.

Brandy Sims just wants to take a shower.

“A woman wants to keep clean,” said Sims, 41. “I’d go without food if I could just wash my hair.”

She and her husband have been sleeping in their car beside the South Platte River, in a makeshift camp of tarp-draped RVs, for the past couple weeks. Sims and her husband wound up homeless after a series of bad turns, culminating in car repairs that left them broke.

“We could take showers at the rec center, but it’s closed,” Sims said as her husband tinkered with the car’s broken heater. “So are the churches.

We could freshen up at the library or McDonald’s, but that’s gone too.”

With the vast majority of public amenities shut down amid the COVID-19 pandemic, people living on the streets have seen their meager support systems dwindle.

With stores and restaurants shut, access to bathrooms is scarce. Without libraries, accessing the internet — where the vast majority of information about a world-shaking crisis

groups who provide services to people with nowhere else to go.

“We’re grieving that we can’t open,” said LynnAnn Huizingh, the executive director of the Severe Weather Shelter Network. The group partners with churches in the Denver suburbs to shelter unhoused people on cold nights, providing a hot meal, companionship, and a warm, dry place to sleep.

But many of the group’s volunteers are over 50 and at greater risk from the virus, and partner churches are closed. When a late-winter squall blew in during the first week of widespread

closures, the network was unable to open shelters to the multitudes it normally serves.

Instead, volunteers held outreach events, handing out emergency kits with handwarmers, socks, bus tickets, blankets and tarps.

“Our mission is to keep people from freezing to death,” Huizingh said. “Our guests told us, `We’ve survived worse than this. We’ll see you on the flip side.’ The grace and understanding we received was so humbling.”

Other lifelines are all but closed.

Giving Heart in Englewood, a day shelter that provides connections to a wide variety of services, shut its doors in efforts to maintain social distancing, according to a voicemail on the center’s hotline, though mail service for people with no fixed address continues — which may prove essential for people to receive assistance checks in coming weeks.

Two residents at Littleton assisted living home test positive for COVID-19 Seniors at greatest risk, health department says; six cases identified in Littleton so far

At least two residents of Libby Bortz Assisted Living in Littleton have tested positive for COVID-19, officials said on March 24.

The Tri-County Health Department had identified a total of six cases in Littleton as of March 24, said Ashley Richter, the department’s manager of epidemiology.

The cases at Libby Bortz, a 111-apartment assisted living facility near downtown Littleton, are concerning because of the virus’ increased lethality in older people, Richter said.

Senior care facilities are also prone to rapid spread of the virus because residents live in close proximity, Richter said.

Richter said Tri-County Health investigates individual cases, but cases in senior care facilities are handed over to the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment, or CDPHE. CDPHE did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The facility is owned by South Metro Housing Options, or SMHO, a Littleton-based public housing authority.

SMHO did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It’s unlikely everyone at Libby Bortz has been tested for the virus, Richter said.

“The more we test everyone, the more tests we take away from those who are sick, who are showing symptoms,” Richter said. “Doctors and hospitals are seeing their own increase in volume, and they need as much help as they can get.”

Littleton Public Schools to expand free meals for kids program Breakfast and lunch provided at no charge to all youths under 18

HOW TO PICK UP MEALS Littleton Public Schools will provide free grab-and-go breakfasts and lunches to all youths age 18 and younger for the foreseeable future.

Schedules and locations are subject to change, but currently the district is distributing food at East and Field elementary schools, on Monday and Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Staff will provide meals for several days at a time.

East Elementary is at 5933 S. Fairfield St. in Littleton.

Field Elementary is at 5402 S Sherman Way in Littleton.

As the COVID-19 crisis continues, Littleton Public Schools will keep feeding hungry kids.

The district will keep providing grab-and-go breakfasts and lunches for anyone 18 and younger at no charge for the foreseeable future, said Katie Kerkhoff, a supervisor in the Nutrition Services department.

Though so far meals have been distributed from Field and East elementaries, Kerkhoff said the department is working on expanding to other locations, and even using school buses to deliver meals to other parts of the city.

LPS began distributing free breakfasts and lunches on March 16, after Superintendent Brian Ewert ordered all schools closed as part of efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Though the program was only scheduled for a week, officials decided to extend it as it became apparent the school shutdown would drag on — and as business closures began costing people their jobs.

“These are crazy times,” Kerkhoff said. “Nobody anticipated a shutdown

The program was an immediate hit, Kerkhoff said, and as of March 23, food service staff were handing out upward of 150 meals a day from East Elementary, and up to 80 a day from Field.

Each meal includes a wide variety of healthy foods, Kerkhoff said,

including sandwiches, fruit, milk and other items.

Though staff handed out meals every day during the first week, Kerkhoff said in future weeks, meals will likely only be handed out two or three days a week, though they will offer five days’ worth of meals.

This isn’t LPS’ first experience with free meals for kids. The district also ran a similar program last summer in conjunction with South Suburban Parks and Recreation.

At East Elementary on March 23, a

steady line of cars rolled up to a tent where nutrition supervisor Sarah Kinney handed out bagged meals.

Parent Erin Aldrich, whose two kids are in first and third grades, said the program is easing the difficulty of the age of quarantine.

“This whole thing took us by surprise,” Aldrich said. “I didn’t have time to stockpile food. This is really nice, and we’re really grateful they’re doing it.”

Kinney said she’s happy she can help.

“We hope we can take one more thing off peoples’ lists,” Kinney said, wearing a face mask and gloves. “We hope we can be a light in dark times.”

COVID-19 pushes county jail to lower inmate count All incoming and outgoing inmates screened for fevers, Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown says

Arapahoe County is working to keep its jail population down in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the facility, Sheriff Tyler Brown said.

There were no known cases of COVID-19 in the jail as of March 25, Brown said.

While the jail often averages about 1,000-1,100 inmates per day, Brown said he has been working with the court system to move people out. The current daily population is between 800 and 900, he said.

“We’re getting lower-risk individuals out, while still adhering to the Victims’ Rights Act,” Brown said. “We don’t want to put people at risk of being victimized again.”

Brown said inmates on work release,

meaning they spend the night in the jail but can leave during the day to go to work, have been shifted to home detention with electronic monitoring.

Staff at the jail are monitoring the temperatures of all incoming and outgoing inmates and arresting officers, Brown said.

The jail’s medical facility has two

negative airflow rooms that can be used for isolating COVID-19 patients, Brown said, and jail staff are working to convert a day room into a potential isolation room.

The department’s operations center is working with local hospitals to determine the availability of beds in case an outbreak overwhelmed the jail’s infirmary, Brown said.

The department received significant donations of protective masks and gloves from the public in recent days, Brown said, and has been able to buy back more from licensed contractors.

The personal protective equipment has been distributed to deputies and jail staff, and the department received enough donations to give some to South Metro Fire Rescue, Brown said.

Jail staff are also working with local agencies to try to find safe, sanitary places for people experiencing homelessness before they’re released.

“We want to make sure everyone’s needs are being met as well as possible,” Brown said.

Twelve firefighters with South Metro Fire Rescue have been ordered to self-isolate for 14 days after two firefighters tested presumptive positive for COVID-19, the agency said March 25.

The two firefighters who tested positive are recovering at home, according to a news release. The other 10 firefighters who came into contact with

them have been ordered to self-isolate in accordance with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Additionally, if there are any other direct exposures that are found from individuals, citizens and/or patients who have come in direct contact with any of our SMFR personnel who have tested positive for COVID-19, we will be making appropriate notifications,” a news release reads in part.

The agency said it will continue to take proactive measures to limit exposure to COVID-19, including screening calls through the dispatch center, deploying crews with personal protective equipment including masks and gloves, transferring patients to

hospitals without crews entering emergency departments, cleaning and disinfecting stations and medic units, and monitoring personnel for fevers at the beginning and end of their shifts.

South Metro Fire Rescue provides

fire rescue and paramedic service to a vast swath of the south Denver metro area, covering a 287-square-mile area stretching from Parker to south Jefferson County. The agency employs about 700 people.

APRIL WATER MAIN FLUSHING PROGRAM

The City of Englewood Utilities Department will conduct its annual fire hydrant flushing program starting April 20.

During this week, the water mains throughout the City will be flushed between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.

The water distribution crews will be opening fire hydrants to full volume to clean residue and sediment from the water mains. The resulting surge of water flushes mineral accumulations from the main. This sediment may be forced into the connecting service lines.

Residents may experience a flow of brown water from their taps during this time. If this occurs, turn on cold water only until the taps are flowing clear.

State issues stay-at-home order State announces order to last through at least April 11

After about two weeks of escalating orders and guidance from the state, and more Colorado counties issuing their own stay-at-home orders, Gov. Jared Polis invoked Americans’ sacrifice in World War II as he announced a statewide stay-at-home order to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Referencing how Americans gave up normal life to support that war effort, Polis framed the spread of coronavirus in dire, historical terms.

“Americans have been called on to serve our country time and time again,” Polis said at a March 25 news conference. “You have the chance to be a hero and save thousands of lives by staying home.”

As of March 25, Colorado’s tally of COVID-19 cases rose to nearly 1,100 across 36 counties, with more than 8,000 people tested and 19 deaths.

Earlier on March 25, three Denver metro area public health departments issued stay-at-home orders, covering Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas, Jefferson and Boulder counties.

The statewide stay-at-home went into effect at 6 a.m. March 26 and will last through at least April 11.

RTD approves plan to reduce services starting April 19 Changes include package originally scheduled for May, plus weekend service levels in response to COVID-19 STAFF REPORT

Service changes originally planned for May, along with a service-reduction plan to address COVID-19, were approved March 24 by the Regional Transportation District’s Board of Directors.

According to a news release, the approved changes will reduce the agency’s bus, light rail and special services starting April 19.

The extensive package of May service changes would originally have taken effect May 17, the release said. However, a special board meet-

ing was called to address COVID-19 by moving to the weekend service outlined in the May service changes.

The COVID-19 plan was passed unanimously.

The initial changes shift most bus service to a Saturday schedule and light rail service to a Sunday schedule as outlined in the May service change plan. This is in response to a 70% decrease in ridership resulting from the spread of COVID-19, the release said. The weekend levels of service that were approved reduce service by about 40 percent from current levels.

“The current decrease in RTD ridership is unrivaled in the agency’s history, and by taking this action, we exercise responsibility and care for our employees and our customers,” RTD Interim General Manager and CEO Paul J. Ballard said in the release. “This also allows us to continue to serve those who rely on us, including health care and food service workers and others who are critical to fighting this crisis, while also giv-

ing us flexibility to restore service as ridership returns.”

Ballard said the reduced service levels will remain in effect through Sept. 20, which is the next planned service change. RTD will continue to evaluate ridership and service needs and reinstate service as demand warrants and ridership returns, according to the release.

Service will be restored as necessary from Saturday and Sunday service to the service levels outlined in the May service change.

RTD intends to retain its operations staff during the service reduction.

Those who aren’t assigned regular routes will be on standby to cover open trips or shifts for operators who call in sick, as well as participate in refresher training. Taking this approach will keep the agency’s workforce intact for when the pandemic subsides and service levels can be restored, the release said.

‘Rapid rise’ in positive tests led to local stay-at-home order Fears that growing pandemic is the ‘tip of the iceberg’ drive need for people to avoid social contact

The number of positive tests for COVID-19 speak for themselves, as far as Dr. Bernadette Albanese is concerned.

On March 17, Colorado had 160 positive tests. A week later, that number was 4.5 times higher — 720 cases.

“A day later, it had increased from 720 to 912 cases,” said Albanese, an epidemiologist with the Tri-County

State parks will remain open, but all playgrounds, picnic areas and “other similar areas conducive to public gathering” will be closed. People at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19 — adults 60 or older and people with serious underlying conditions — and those who are sick must not leave home except to receive medical care. Those with symptoms of COVID-19 must selfisolate until their symptoms cease or until they have a negative test result.

People also may travel to collect materials for online class or other remote learning, or to receive meals or any related services from educational institutions. Travel to provide or access “necessary” activities or “critical businesses” is permitted.

Employees in “critical businesses” may still go to work, but those businesses must comply with social distancing requirements, which generally means staying 6 feet apart from others.

Grocery stores and liquor stores will remain open, and restaurants and bars will continue to deliver and sell takeout. The state’s list of other “critical” businesses includes industries such as

Health Department, which covers Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties. “This is a rapid rise in the number of positive tests that we are getting reported.”

It’s that kind of rise, and the fear that those positive tests represent the very tip of the iceberg, that led Tri-County Health to join with Jefferson and Boulder counties to announce on March 25 an emergency stay-at-home order, which was schedDouglas uled to last from March 26 through April 17.

Later in the day March 25, Gov. Jared Polis announced a statewide stay-at-home order, to last through April 11. That prompted Tri-County to rescind its order.

“We believe this action will

ensure social distancing requirements are consistent across the state, and that our communities are not confused by multiple orders,” the agency announced in a March 26 news release.

As the state order does, the TriCounty order would have required residents to stay at home except for what were identified as essential activities — getting food and supplies, receiving medical care and participating in outdoor exercise, for example. Also like the state order, the Tri-County order would have allowed people in what were deemed essential businesses to continue to go to work, including those in the fields of health care, infrastructure, utilities, groceries, news media and liquor and marijuana retail.

State and local officials have been encouraging residents to practice

health care, infrastructure, utilities, agriculture, banks, news media, firearms stores, in-person pastoral services for individuals in crisis or in need of endof-life services, homeless shelters and food banks, and many more.

The state updated the “critical” list the morning of March 26 to include K-12 public and private schools — and colleges and universities — to provide meals, online class and other services.

Other exceptions were also added.

The update clarified that houses of worship may remain open but are encouraged to use electronic platforms to conduct services or to conduct smaller, more frequent services with 10 or fewer congregants to follow the requirement to stay at least 6 feet apart from others.

Preventing broader pain Polis framed the urgency of the situation both in terms of dire economic and human costs, noting that thousands of people in Italy, “from all stripes of society,” have died from COVID-19, “and we can’t allow thousands of Coloradans to meet the same fate,” he said.

The governor also argued the economic devastation to the state would be far greater than it is now if Colorado doesn’t apply the order now and that the action will allow for “returning to normal sooner rather than later.”

social distancing, avoiding large groups and staying at least 6 feet away from everyone else since the disease was first identified in Colorado in early March.

“But yet, despite those efforts, the iceberg keeps pushing up,” Albanese said during a Tri-County Health media conference March 25. “We are starting to see more sick people, more hospitalizations, providers seeing more patients with illness that could be consistent with COVID. We’ve observed what’s going on in other states and a lot of lessons learned about what might happen.”

Colorado needs to step up efforts to keep people home to try to curtail the disease, at least as much as possible, she said.

The governor acknowledged on March 22 that it’s unrealistic for law enforcement to ensure people are complying with a stay-at-home order, but he hopes that Coloradans’ concern for their lives and their loved ones will lead them to comply.

“We are making an appeal for people to do the right thing,” Polis said.

Preparing for a surge The stay-at-home order is intended to buy the state more time to increase its health care capacity before an inevitable surge in patients due to COVID-19, Polis said. Adding more ventilators and health care professionals to the workforce who aren’t currently working in the field takes time, he said.

On the question of whether the peak of the virus’ spread would come before April 11, when the stay-at-home order ends, Polis said it’s possible that the order could last longer.

Polis again mentioned his goal of mass testing much larger numbers of Coloradans to more accurately quarantine — rather than shutting down large sections of society — again referencing South Korea and Taiwan. Such an effort could take weeks or perhaps months to be ready, he has said.

General’s Office, counties and local public health agencies have the authority to enforce public health orders, such as Colorado’s stay-at-home order.

District attorneys can bring civil or criminal action requested by the local public health director for a violation, according to a fact sheet by the attorney general’s office.

“At least initially, we hope that voluntary compliance will be enough and law enforcement does not plan to stop people for verification,” a fact sheet from Arapahoe County and the county sheriff ’s office says.

George Brauchler, district attorney for Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties, echoed that sentiment in a news release.

“These rules and laws need to be complied with, but the fear should not be that you will be (dragged) into court to face criminal charges,” Brauchler said. “That is a matter of last, last, last resort.”

VOICES Songs keep coming one day after another

s your perception of time any different than it was a few months ago?

For a while it QUIET seemed like I was having at least two DESPERATION birthdays every year. Now? Time has slowed down.

Days are different.

Weeks are different.

Needing a cue, I came up with a calendar of songs.

I heard the Mamas and Papas sing Craig Marshall “Monday Monday” at the Melodyland Smith Theatre in Anaheim, California in 1966. The opening act was Simon and Garfunkel.

The stage rotated and about every

As for Friday? There were many to choose from.

The infectious “Friday on My Mind” by the Easy Beats is hard to resist.

“A Sunday Kind of Love” by Etta James is as good as it gets. The song was covered by the Harptones in 1953.

Billie Holiday sang Sunday differently. “Gloomy Sunday” was recorded in 1941.

“Mind your own business” can easily become lost in social media, as people are not short on opinions and feedback.

and the backbiting have no place in our minds right now, or at any time, really. I highly recommend cutting those sources out immediately.

Zig Ziglar said, “We are what we are and where we are because of what we put into our mind. We can change what we are and where we are by changing what goes into our mind.” Spending so much time working from home or in isolation gives us plenty of time to access information and consume content. So, wherever we can find the positive, motivational, uplifting, educational and inspirational information, I encourage us to lock in on those people and sources who are helping us mind the business of our own mind while shutting out and shutting down the noise of negativity.

Minding our own business can also mean that we learn to spend quiet time reflecting on those things that bring us peace, inspire us, or boost our creativity. Sometimes just sitting quietly is the best way to take care of our mind. Many people find that meditation is helpful, others will spend time in prayer to take care of themselves mentally and spiritually.

And others have shared with me that they simply sit quietly and allow their minds to empty as they focus

on nothing more than the pace of their breathing. And whether it’s through meditation, prayer, or just being completely still and quiet, the one thing that everyone shares is that they come out of each with clarity and a greater sense of peace.

Another area we can focus on as we take care of ourselves and our minds is learning how to practice patience. Many people were born with the patience gene, and God bless them, as it is much easier for them to be patient. Others of us missed out on that gene, and patience is work, and takes a lot of practice. Just like choosing what we allow into our minds, we can also choose to be patient and practice patience.

Lastly, as we choose how we mind the business of our mind, let’s remember that the words we choose to

And then it takes awhile to learn the test results.

“So, we are working right now with what we know has only partially, in retrospect, been measured.

First responders, community members turning to alternative source

A

round the time a national increase in COVID-19 cases began leading to product shortages, Spring44 Distilling in Loveland planned to make one highly demanded product — hand sanitizer — on-site. The distillery started making a handful of calls to gauge interest from those who might need the sanitizer most, like first responders.

Within a matter of days, the distillery was receiving call after call from police departments — not only in nearby northern Colorado cities but also from departments throughout Jefferson County and the broader Denver area.

“It just snowballed. The requests are coming fast and furious,” said Spring44 chief financial officer Robin Marisco. She added that the distillery has distributed more than 6,000 bottles of hand sanitizer to police organizations and others so far.

“Booze is not usually the answer in a crisis, but distilleries are now able to help in a super positive way,” she said.

“It’s a way for us to give back.”

As the impact of COVID-19 has escalated, numerous distilleries throughout the metro area have also launched hand sanitizer operations, producing and distributing to first responders and the wider community.

Where the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) would normally prohibit this, the two government agencies have amended their regulations in recent weeks as distilleries across the country have requested permission to enact their hand sanitizer plans.

As of March 26, the TTB’s latest statement said the organization is providing authorizations and exemptions for distilleries producing hand sanitizer, such as by waiving the need for additional permits. In turn, distilleries must keep detailed records of operations and follow a specific formula.

The FDA likewise has posted a statement saying it will not take action against distilleries, provided they meet certain requirements. Those include following the approved formula, preparing products under sanitary conditions and registering products with the FDA. With the relaxed regulations, more and more distilleries have jumped on board to address the needs of local organizations like the Westminster Police Department — which, on average, uses about three gallons of hand sanitizer per day, said investigator Cheri Spottke.

“This is an effort to get more hand sanitizer to the people who want it and calm some of the panic,” Adamson said.

So far, the department has received sanitizer from almost 10 distilleries, she said.

“At this point, all of it has been donated. Moving forward, we will be working with these distilleries to purchase hand sanitizer,” Spottke said.

“We cannot express our gratitude enough to these distilleries for their generosity.”

However, Marisco said, as more distilleries work to meet the growing demand, “there are certain components that are harder and harder to get.”

The lack of supply has been a barrier for Devil’s Head Distillery in Englewood, said owner Ryan White.

The distillery has the equipment necessary to make hand sanitizer but has had trouble sourcing some of the necessary ingredients, such as ethanol.

Some distilleries have been able to obtain ingredients through existing connections with plants or by producing the components on-site. But for White, while his distillery produces ethanol, the cost of producing the amount necessary for hand sanitizer isn’t attainable, and many of the suppliers he’s reached out to don’t have ethanol available to provide to new

accounts.

“I’ve got about 30 emails out to some of the smaller plants so we can help our community,” White said. “We’ve been getting multiple inquiries for hand sanitizer. The shortages nationwide have people looking at all sources, and we really want to participate and help with the relief effort.”

If the distillery is able to secure the necessary ingredients, it could be distributing sanitizer three or four days later, White said.

“My intention would be to make it as long as there’s a need for it,” he said. “The big piece of the puzzle is being able to have an uninterrupted supply.”

When the operation is up and running, White hopes to assist the entities that have reached out, which includes nursing homes, police departments and health care organizations.

In addition to distributing to these operations, many local distilleries have also been selling or donating bottles to individual community members. At Ballmer Peak Distillery in Lakewood, hundreds of area residents have come by to receive a four-

ounce bottle of hand sanitizer, with the distillery having already produced more than 2,700 ounces, said Austin Adamson, co-owner and distiller.

“We saw other distilleries in Seattle making hand sanitizer, so I started researching how they were doing it,” Adamson said. Ballmer Peak has provided the sanitizer to community members for free, finding that many donate to help the distillery cover costs.

Others in the area have found different ways to ensure the sanitizer gets into customers’ hands. For instance, Golden Moon Distillery, located in Golden, cannot distribute sanitizer for free because of its licensing regulations, but it has given sanitizer out along with the purchase of any bottle.

As the distilleries remain open under current stay-at-home orders, they’re also taking the chance to encourage customers to support their businesses after stocking up on sanitizer.

“When our tasting room closed, we were worried we couldn’t stay open.

We had to switch to only bottle sales to go,” Adamson said. Now, as residents line up by the dozens, the distillery has seen some buy a bottle of spirits to show their support.

And, while the distillery is thanking customers for continuing to support them, residents are returning the favor.

“We get people just thanking us, saying they’ve searched grocery stores and pharmacies and couldn’t find any hand sanitizer,” Adamson said.

“They’re just so happy there’s someone doing something like this.”

Keeping children healthy can lower risk for others STAFF REPORT

Closing schools is one of the most powerful ways to slow down the spread of COVID-19 and protect people at higher risk from getting very sick or dying, according to a news release from the Tri-County Health Department.

The health department encourages parents and guardians to understand the situation and do their part to protect these people, too. Though kids are thought to be at lower risk for severe disease from COVID-19, they can easily spread it to others.

The department is most concerned about those older than 60 and people who have chronic medical conditions such as diabetes or heart, lung or kidney disease, the release said.

School closures are about keeping the whole community safe by removing as many disease pathways as possible, according to the release.

When school is closed, kids and adults should practice social distancing by staying 6 feet away from others as much as possible. Parents should not take sick children into any social setting, instead keeping them home and separate from others, the release said.

Parents of children and teens with chronic health issues and immunecompromising conditions should check with health care providers before participating in shared childcare arrangements or gatherings.

Residents older than 60 and those with a chronic medical condition, should avoid gatherings and caring for other people’s children. Small groups and big spaces lower the risk of disease spread.

Tri-County Health offers recommendations for indoor gatherings and sharing child care: • Consider the size of the space vs. the size of the group. Aim to have the fewest number of children possible in the largest space available.

• Consider asking participating families to take their children’s temperature before gathering.

• Frequently clean high-touch surfaces like doorknobs, toys, keyboards and sports equipment. Everyday cleaning products are effective against COVID-19.

• Practice social distancing measures. To increase distance between children, keep groups small, play games that involve fewer opportunities for touching, and remind them to cover coughs and sneezes and to wash

their hands frequently and thoroughly.

Parents and guardians also should practice social distancing and not participate if they are sick. Adults who join should practice social distancing and not participate if they are sick.

For teenagers, aim for groups of 10 or less, and avoid spending time in larger groups and in crowded places such as parties, retail spaces and movie theaters.

Low-contact, outdoor activities such as hiking and bike riding are great ways for small groups of teens to socialize.

During the time off from school, parents and caregivers are encouraged to teach their children to: • Cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash their hands. Teach kids to use their inner elbow if a tissue is not available.

• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol if soap and water are not available.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

• Not share food, water bottles, utensils or cups.

Restaurants ‘ride out the storm’ at SouthGlenn Most businesses closed at outdoor mall, but restaurants still open despite temporary cuts

Just 11 months after opening a crawfish restaurant at The Streets at SouthGlenn, 27-year-old Khiem Nguyen had to lay off much of his staff.

“Chefs, cooks, employees — you name it,” Nguyen said. He hopes to bring them back when he’s able.

Colorado on March 16 ordered bars and restaurants to stop dine-in service for 30 days, later extending that shutdown through the end of April.

Delivery, take-out and drive-thru are still allowed, leaving large chains and small businesses to figure out how to stay afloat amid the economic changes dealt by COVID-19, the disease caused by a novel coronavirus.

“We’ll ride the storm out together as best we can,” said Nguyen, who lives in Parker. He describes his Crawfish Boil Co., a restaurant and bar, as a “small mom-and-pop shop.”

and East Arapahoe Road, remains open. But the vast majority of its businesses are closed, said Donald Provost, founding principal of the company that controls most of SouthGlenn.

“Whole Foods and restaurants will stay open,” said Provost, of Alberta Development Partners. SouthGlenn “will not have any planned activities or events until it’s safe to so.”

Other malls and shopping centers in the Denver metro area have closed or modified their hours amid the spread of COVID-19. The Outlets at Castle Rock, a significant contributor to that town’s sales tax revenue, shut down until March 30.

SouthGlenn has intensified its existing cleaning protocol, including ramping up cleaning efforts of all commonly touched surfaces such as seating, doors, handrails, elevators and directories, its website says.

“We are following the official guidance from federal, state and local health officials and they have told us that closing the mall is not a recommended action at this time,” the site says.

Angel Byun, a manager at Crawfish Boil Co., is focused on following guidelines for social distancing — a public health term that means avoiding gatherings and staying far enough away from people to remain healthy during the pandemic. She has been disappointed by seeing some flout the guidance, but seeing positive interactions gives her hope.

“I’m happy with ultimately how people are helping each other out,” said Byun, a 30-year-old from south Jefferson County. “There is still good in this world.”

Swedish gears up for surge Hospital executive believes facility will have enough staff and equipment

Swedish Medical Center has installed a trailer outside its emergency room in case the emergency room gets too packed.

The hospital is also dedicating units for COVID-19 patients.

Swedish Medical Center Emergency Medical Director Dylan Luyten wears multiple hats for the Englewood hospital. Luyten, who has been with Swedish since 2003, works both clinically and administratively for the hospital. He is involved in general hospital preparation, emergency medical services preparation and is the president elect of the medical staff for the hospital.

As Luyten and the rest of the Swedish Medical Center staff waits for more patients with COVID-19 to come in, the hospital has already seen over 30 suspected cases of the virus as of March 25 — but that number is always changing due to how long it takes to test patients.

“We end up having lots of people who we think have COVID-19, but we just don’t know. The vast majority we deal with are discharged,” said Luyten. “They are well, they don’t have to be in the hospital, and they are not being admitted because most people will just have mild symptoms.”

Luyten says the hospital has the proper amount of staffing needed to assist patients. With elective surgeries like hip replacements and nonemergency medical procedures being prohibited in the state until April 14 to preserve hospital equipment, more of Swedish Medical Center’s staff will be ready to take care of patients who are suffering from the novel coronavirus infection.

“One of the biggest challenges is going to be keeping providers safe and not getting sick. We keep a close eye on that,” said Luyten. “We have had providers who have tested positive

for COVID-19 but we have not seen a meaningful impact on our workforce.

But we will keep a close eye.”

Swedish Medical Center has launched plans that look at everything involved with patient care, including physician and nursing staff, ventilators, oxygen delivery capacity, intensive care unit beds, IV fluids and housekeeping resources. Luyten says the hospital has enormous resources in its intensive care units and its ventilators.

Swedish Medical Center is part of the HCA Healthcare operator of health care facilities and because of that, it has access to extensive resources in terms of mobilizing ventilators, Luyten said.

“Having said that, we are worried about the stress on the systems. Our numbers people tell us we probably have most of the ventilators we need — but we still need more,” said Luyten.

He added that the biggest problem the hospital is going to face is related to availability of personal protective equipment (PPE). The World Health Organization warned of a severe disruption to the global supply of PPE in a March 3 release. Luyten said the hospital is actively managing its PPE supply, and said because it is part of HCA Healthcare, it is well positioned

for access to the equipment. He says he doesn’t believe Swedish Medical Center will run out of PPE. In preparation of a surge of patients, the hospital is setting up alternative care models like a doublewide trailer in front of its emergency room. The trailer was placed in the event that Swedish Medical Center’s emergency room were to be overrun with patients. The hospital also has dedicated units for COVID-19 patients.

Luyten speculates that Denver metro area hospitals and health-care systems will be just as busy as those in Seattle because of similarities in demographics.

“We’re seeing that they are busy, their intensive care units are full.

They’re not overwhelmed, they’re not collapsing, and they’re not running out of ventilators,” said Luyten. “We hope they are about two weeks ahead of us (in terms of COVID-19 cases). We just don’t know where we are going

to be, but I think we’ll be like Seattle.

We’ll be full stressed, but we’ll be able to manage it. But it is all speculation.”

Luyten said on March 25 that analytic workers at the state and hospital believe Colorado is still a couple of weeks away from a real surge in COVID-19 cases — the time when Swedish Medical Center expects to be at full capacity. The hospital has 408 inpatient beds, 60 intensive care unit beds and 45 beds in the emergency department.

Luyten believes there is a misperception that hospitals are overwhelmed and added he is worried there are residents not going to the hospital because they fear of getting sick.

“One of the concerns is, COVID-19 interferes with people who need routine care because all the attention is on the pandemic. Right now, we have no idea how many people have COVID-19,” said Luyten. “But we know its 100 times if not 1,000 times (the number of reported cases) because testing is so limited. We will never begin to have as many confirmed cases as there are cases just by the nature of testing.”

Even though he admits that there is a sense of anxiety, Luyten says Swedish Medical Center’s employees are engaged, inspired and ready to help those who may suffer from the virus.

“This is what we train for. This is a historic event that I think most of us agree that we will look back on later in our lives and a time when we were in the middle of an international pandemic — and we played a role in it,” said Luyten.

County waives interest on certain tax payments Businesses, individuals now have option of paying property taxes in two installments STAFF REPORT

Arapahoe County businesses and residents who intended to pay their property taxes in full on April 30 now have the option of paying in two equal installments, with the first half due by April 20 and the second due by June 15.

According to a letter from Arapahoe County Treasurer Sue Sandstrom, the option to pay in two installments is intended to provide relief by spreading out payments and lengthening the time allowed to pay without interest.

Payments must be made by check or cash, and they may be mailed or deposited in the secure drop box at the Arapahoe County Administrative

Building, 5334 S. Prince St. in Littleton. Online and over-the-phone payments do not qualify for the interest waiver, the treasurer said in the letter.

All property tax payment due dates and interest rates are determined

by Colorado state statutes, and the treasurer’s office must follow those statutes. However, due to the financial difficulties associated with the COVID-19 health crisis, the governor issued an executive order March 20, providing flexibility in collecting interest on tax payments.

As of March 27, no adjustments to tax payment due dates or additional late interest waivers have been made.

Full payments made after April 30 and second-half payments made after June 15 will accrue statutory interest.

This information does not apply to mass payments, title company payments and delinquent payments for prior years.

Other groups are doing their best to adapt. Café 180, a pay-what-youcan restaurant in Englewood that often serves people living on the street, is handing out grab-and-go meals.

So is Littleton’s GraceFull Café, another pay-what-you-can restaurant that’s become a hub of compassion and dignity for people without homes.

Though the dining room is closed, GraceFull owner Heather Greenwood is still doing her best for her guests, letting them use the restaurant’s bathroom and phone.

“So many of us are one job loss, one illness, one divorce away from losing our homes,” Follmer said. “We haven’t even felt the full impact of this yet. People haven’t had to pay the next round of bills yet. We’re deeply concerned.”

The center’s food pantry is running low, Follmer said, as grocery stores and restaurants increasingly have nothing to donate.

“I want people to realize every one of us is at risk,” Follmer said. “Maybe now people won’t be so quick to judge. How are we going to take care of everyone who needs serious help?

It’s going to take more than a village.

It’s going to take a country.”

Spring activities on hold in bid to keep kids safe

N

obody should blame Rhonda Blanford-Green if she feels overwhelmed, stressed, anxious or pressured these days. These are common thoughts for people who have to make tough decisions.

Blanford-Green is the commissioner of the Colorado High School Activities Association and has already had to cancel the final few days of the state basketball tournaments, and spring sports and activities are suspended until April 18 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With our first decision about suspending spring activities, it’s imOVERTIME portant that people understand it is spring activities and not sports,” said Blanford-Green. “We have speech and music going on. We put together some of our state’s best education leaders to guide us in some of our decision- Jim Benton making.

“Obviously, the ultimate decision comes from my desk but I have surrounded myself with some pretty compassionate but also responsible administrators that know that we’re making tough decisions, but the ultimate thing is to make sure we put the well- being of our students, our coaches, officials and our whole staff out of harm’s ways during this unknown time.”

State and government agencies also figure into CHSAA’s decision, and the impact of these crazy times has economically impacted the CHSAA after stopping the state basketball tournaments. Girls semifinals were played but the limited spectators who were

allowed to watch got in free. And with spring sports, at least in my opinion, likely to be canceled, that could be another costly loss.

“About half our revenue comes from ticket sales,” pointed out BlanfordGreen. “We don’t have expenses but don’t have revenue.”

The CHSAA is in a waiting pattern like the rest of us.

“Our decision for spring sports is totally dependent on any type of decisions that are made about in-school resuming of academics,” said BlanfordGreen. “We are not going to operate outside of any type of decisions that are made where kids are not in school.

We’re education-based.”

More decisions will have to be made and Blanford-Green is ready to face the music.

“We’re in a world pandemic,” she insisted. “At the end of the day you have to put things into perspective about the decisions I’m making vs. the decisions of our president or governor or mayors of these cities that are going to impact people’s lives forever. To me it’s a no-brainer to stop the spread of this. We have to adjust to this to make sure that there are not lives that are imperiled because of decisions we don’t make.

“I never felt like I was taking something away as much as I felt like I was protecting those that were in those facilities from the unknown. We just have to be part of the solution which is shutting down like everybody else to make sure we are not contributing to the spread of COVID-19.”

Goalie shows real grit Trey Hirschfield chosen as Hockey Player of Year

Valor Christian goaltender Trey Hirschfield is the Colorado Community Media South Metro Hockey Player of the Year.

Trey Hirschfield is like most good goaltenders and knows a lot of his success depends on the defense in front of him.

Hirschfield, a senior at Valor Christian, has been named the 2020 Colorado Community Media South Metro Hockey Player of the Year.

He was chosen from hockey teams in the Douglas County and Littleton school districts plus Valor Christian, Cherry Creek, Regis Jesuit, Grandview, Smoky Hill, Eaglecrest and Cherokee Trail.

Hirschfield was 13-1-0 this season with a 1.20 goals against average with six shutouts. In the three playoffs games, he was 3-0 for the state champion Eagles with 0.27 goals against average with a .986 saves percentage and two shutouts.

He shut out Fort Collins in five overtimes in a 1-0 win in the March 10 state championship game.
