heels of a full-day kindergarten program rolled out this year.

Polis was joined by state Sen. Jeff Bridges, D-Greenwood Village, who sits on the state Senate’s Education Committee, and state Rep. Meg Froelich, D-Englewood.

Polis is seeking $27.6 million in his 2020-21 budget request to add 6,000 new slots to the Colorado Preschool Program, according to Chalkbeat.

“Every kid should be able to go to preschool,” Polis said. “It’s an important part of their future success, and it saves

taxpayer money — it lowers crime rates, rates of grade repetition and need for special education.”

Parents are eager to get their kids into preschool, said Village director Tracy Hansen.

“The district phone is ringing off the wall about preschool,” Hansen said.

“Parents know it’s important, and teachers say kids who haven’t been to preschool and kindergarten are behind those who have.”

I’m learning more about myself, and it’s forced me to focus on selfimprovement. My son’s not even 2, but I’m trying to give him an example of what a man should be.

I’m focusing on my career as a graphic artist. I want him to travel, so he knows the world is bigger than Colorado.

I was born in Bosnia, and grew up during the war there. We were hit with artillery fire, but we were farther from the worst of the fighting.

We were lucky — we didn’t have soldiers on the ground, and we weren’t near most of the genocide. I don’t have a lot of memories of that time. I think I’ve blocked a lot out.

Waking up from the nightmare My family was granted refugee status, and we arrived in America in 1997, when I was 9. In some ways that’s really when my life began. It was like I was in a nightmare, and then I woke up.

We were resettled in Los Angeles, where I had an aunt and uncle. My family and their family all lived together in a two-bedroom house. I remembering being blown away by dishwashers and washing machines. I was amazed — everyone in America had a TV. I’d only ever seen one computer, and my school had dozens.

I started learning English in Bosnia from a bootleg VHS of “Terminator II� — the only movie I had. In LA, I started spotting places where they’d filmed the movie. It’s hard to describe what that felt like.

Shaped by America It’s hard to imagine where I’d be without where I came from. It’s easy for me to empathize with others. I have a very positive outlook, because I know things can be so much worse.

My identity is complicated. I don’t have a Bosnian accent, but when I speak Bosnian, I’m told I have an American accent. As far as what shaped me, I’m very American. My wife’s family has been in America for many generations. My son’s relatives will all be Americans. I love it here. It’s amazing and beautiful and should be celebrated.

But it’s also an imperfect place, and I want it to be better, and I think that’s a very American value.

Legislator steps down for job with Trump administration Susan Beckman, of Littleton, had been seeking a third term in the state House STAFF REPORT

State Rep. Susan Beckman has resigned to take a position with the Trump administration, according to a spokesman for the Colorado House Republicans.

Beckman, R-Littleton, could not immediately be reached for comment. It was not immediately known what position she would be taking with the administration.

were not immediately available.

On Twitter Jan. 17, state Rep. Patrick Neville, R-Castle Rock, called the move a “huge loss for us but a huge gain for the country.”

Beckman was elected to the state House District 38 seat in 2016 and reelected in 2018.

She succeeded Republican Kathleen Conti, who ran for and was elected to the Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners.

Beckman served on the Board of Arapahoe County Commissioners from 2001-13. From 1999-2001, she was a member of Littleton City Council.

Beckman’s campaign had already raised $12,708 in her bid for a third term in the House. A pair of Democratic candidates, however, have raised a combined $41,000.

HD 38 was one of the area’s most competitive districts in 2018, with Beckman defeating Democrat Chris Kolker 50.4% to 49.6%.

The district includes most of Littleton and part of west Centennial, among other areas.

Lawmakers aim to divide 18th Judicial District More than 1 million residents live in current four-county jurisdiction

The start to a new legislative session has reignited plans to split up the state’s fastest-growing and most populous judicial district — the 18th Judicial District. Or, what one lawmaker called a “monstrous” chunk of Colorado crammed under a single district’s oversight.

In short, lawmakers say the district is pressured by rapid population growth and increasingly diverse communities with different individual needs.

“It has become monstrous, so to speak. Just a very large judicial district compared to all the others,” said State Rep. Kevin Van Winkle, RHighlands Ranch, a bill sponsor.

Colorado state lawmakers on Jan. 8 introduced House Bill 20-1026, which would create a 23rd Judicial District by splitting the 18th in two. The district today serves more than 1 million people and comprises Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

The next largest, Colorado’s 4th Judicial District, serves fewer than 750,000 people.

If passed, the bill would leave Arapahoe County in the 18th Judicial District and place the remaining three counties into another, creating Colorado’s newest judicial district in decades.

The state has operated 22 judicial districts for the past five decades despite growing in population by more than 3.5 million people in that same time, the bill states. Colorado had four districts at statehood.

Creating a 23rd requires a twothirds vote by the general assembly.

State Rep. Mike Weissman, D-Aurora, considered introducing similar legislation last session and is one of the bill sponsors. It’s scheduled to go before the House Judiciary Committee, on which he sits, this month.

State Sen. Rhonda Fields, D-Aurora, and state. Sen. Bob Gardner, R-Colorado Springs, also are sponsoring the legislation.

“Grateful to have bipartisan support in both chambers,” Weissman said. “I think it’s a recognition that there’s some good sense in the bill.”

A ‘unique’ district Van Winkle said putting Arapahoe County — which has a population of roughly 650,000 people — into its own district and leaving Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln in another will allow the counties to customize a district to their local needs. Particularly as Arapahoe and Douglas have created a “somewhat separate culture and political trend,” he said.

“The voters of each Douglas and Arapahoe county should be able to elect a district attorney that reflects their hometown values,” Van Winkle said.

For 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler, a Republican, ideological differences alone aren’t good enough reason to split the district.

Redistricting can make a significant difference for hot-button issues, he said, naming the death penalty as an example. Every person on death row in Colorado comes from the 18th Judicial District.

“I think there are people out there who want to upend the criminal justice system,” he said. “What’s the best way to do that? Change out who the decision maker is.”

Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties all lean Republican while Arapahoe County voters have supported Democratic candidates in recent election cycles, he said. Placing Arapahoe County into its own district could open the door to electing a district attorney who opposes the death penalty, although capital punishment could be repealed altogether if Senate Bill 20-100 is successful.

“If we’re going to the point of, how to draw district attorney lines merely or purely to accomodate political interests, I think we’re making a huge mistake,” he said.

That’s not the case with the bill to create a 23rd district, he said. To Brauchler, the 18th’s growth and some budgetary concerns add legitimate reasons to consider redistricting it now.

“Where else do you see a multicounty jurisdiction where one of the counties has exploded the way Doug-

las has?” he asked.

The county’s population has more than doubled since the 2010 Census, according to Douglas County’s population estimates from January 2019.

Brauchler said he supports the bill, although he believes the judicial district could continue operating “in its current configuration.”

“I think it’s probably something that is overdue and important for this jurisdiction, but really only this jurisdiction,” Brauchler said. “We’re so unique and we’ve grown in such a unique way.”

Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas said splitting up the districts would give counties the freedom to create specialty courts needed at the local level. Her priority is mental health courts.

Arapahoe County Commissioner Nancy Sharpe said the county supports the bill, but officials will keep a close eye on impacts to the county budget.

‘Things have changed’ If passed, both the 18th and 23rd districts would elect their own district attorney in November 2024.

The winner would assume office in January 2025, also when the 23rd is planned to be up and running.

The change needs to revolve around district attorney elections, Weissman said, which take place every four years in conjunction with the presidential election.

Weissman noted judicial districts are typically set up in one of three ways.

The first approach is letting a populous county comprise its own judicial district, like Boulder or Denver. The second is pairing one populous county with smaller ones, and the final

is clustering rural or less populous counties together.

“The 18th is the only district that consists of two of the most populous and fastest-growing counties in the state,” Weissman said.

Thomas said she’s eager to see the bill passed.

“Things have changed. Populations have changed. The needs of the communities have changed, and by getting this done, Arapahoe County will be better able to focus on the needs of their community and our three counties can really focus on our needs.

Which is huge,” Thomas said.

Van Winkle commended Brauchler, a Parker Republican, for his management of the diverse district.

“He has some extremely rural parts in the district, in terms of Elbert and Lincoln counties. He has Douglas, which is mixed, and of course pieces of Aurora and all of Arapahoe County,” Van Winkle said.

Brauchler, who was elected in 2012, is serving the final year of his second term as DA and cannot seek reelection in the district. District attorneys are allowed to take a term off and then run for election again, a spokesman for the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office said.

Brauchler has not ruled out a run for district attorney in 2024 or a future political career, but he’s not sure what his plans are once his term ends this year.

“I’m not being coy here when I say I don’t know,” Brauchler said. “I think I’ve got a lot more in the tank to give to the community. I just don’t know what that looks like yet.”

Keeping watch Brauchler stressed a judicial hasn’t been created since the 1960s. Setting up a new district will be difficult.

“There’s no playbook for this,” he said.

The bill requires the judicial department to report its progress in creating the new district, with input from the counties, at hearings held under the State Measurement for Accountable, Responsive and Transparent (SMART) Government Act. During those, departments present performance plans that detail their operations and budget requests to the Joint Committees of Reference.

“There really has to be ongoing attention to the transition process,” Weissman said. “We can’t pass a bill and forget it.”

A final report is due at the hearings in 2026 detailing the entire transition process.

The report must address what went well in creating the new district and what aspects of the transition caused trouble. Plus, recommendations to legislators for smoothing the process for future changes to judicial districts.

“So, the next time a judicial district needs to be created, we already know what that wheel looks like. That district isn’t going to have to recreate a new wheel,” Thomas said.

The department is required to budget for any costs associated with creating the district through the 2025 fiscal year.

The SMART hearings, or oversight of the transition, are crucial in Arapahoe County’s stance on the bill, Sharpe said. Arapahoe’s support is “contingent upon the financial interests of our constituents being protected by the bill,” she said, and ensuring the transition is well-planned.

The county’s revenue is limited by TABOR, and officials anticipate one day outgrowing the county’s justice center. That could mean needing more courtrooms, judges, support staff and space. The county appreciates having four years to prepare for a new district, so it can learn more about impacts to the county and prepare, Sharpe said, including the financial impact.

“Those are all things that we have been talking about, not only with our jail but with our justice center,” she said.

Costs associated with setting up a new district remain unknown, Van Winkle, Weismann, Sharpe and Thomas said.

Thomas doubts expenses will incur before 2023 or 2024. Van Winkle said they should be minimal. Weissman believes allowing ample time to set up a new district will spread costs over several years, making them easier to absorb.

“We’re giving kind of a long glide path, a long landing slope,” Van Winkle said.

Years in the works Talks about dividing the district have gone on for years, but plans swung into full motion in the 2019 legislative session as Weissman carefully considered introducing a similar bill.

“It’s something that I have been thinking about for years, just reflecting on the large population of the current 18th, the fact that it’s growing quickly,” Weissman said.

Growing interest from prospec-

tive bill sponsors and local officials caught his attention last year, he said. But Weissman changed course following a Jan. 30, 2019 meeting with various stakeholders, including county commissioners and judicial department staff.

Douglas County commissioners urged swift action to alleviate pressures on the district, particularly with a 2020 election around the corner, what would have been the next opportunity to elect a 23rd district attorney.

A memo from the office of then Secretary of State Wayne Williams stressed if a bill wasn’t introduced in 2019, a new district attorney wouldn’t likely be elected until 2024. Any bill introduced after 2019 wouldn’t leave enough time for district attorney candidates to get on the ballot, according to the memo.

Thomas helped spearhead the county’s efforts to split the judicial district in 2019.

The county compiled a report finding it was paying roughly 33% of district costs while accounting for less than 25% of felony crimes. About 81% of serious felonies and 70% of all felonies were occurring in Arapahoe County. Counties’ contribution to the budget is based on population, but felony crimes require more resources and manpower.

Brauchler said it’s fair for the counties to question the cost-sharing and if Douglas has been subsidizing Arapahoe’s crime, but he wondered how Arapahoe County will make up for the budget shortfall as its own

judicial district.

“That’s going to be tough,” he said.

Not everyone urged immediate action. Arapahoe County commissioners pleaded with stakeholders in the January 2019 stakeholder meeting to slow down.

Waiting for 2024 would provide an adequate study period to figure out how to set up a new district, they said, and how to fund the transition.

Weissman, heeding those warnings, decided against introducing a 2019 bill at the meeting’s end.

“It became clear that was too much too quickly,” he said.

‘Creating history’ Weissman didn’t stop working on the issue after deciding against 2019 legislation.

“I’ve had a lot of conversations over the last year,” he said.

Talks with the four counties, the state judicial department, public defenders and district attorneys informed the bill, he said.

Thomas initially preferred passing a bill in 2019 so that new district attorneys could be elected in 2020.

She was excited by the prospect of splitting the district, and confident it would be good for her community, she said.

Now, Thomas says she’s grateful they have four years to take on the task, should the Legislature pass the bill. She understands the desire to take a transition slow and do it well, she said.

“Let’s face it,” Thomas said. “No. 1, we are creating history here.”

LPS to pull cash from savings as budget cuts loom Faced with $4.2 million shortfall, school district to cut 17 positions

Facing a $4.2 million budget cut, Littleton Public Schools will pull $1 million out of its savings to help soften the blow, the board of education decided unanimously Jan. 16.

The move comes as LPS looks to cut 17 positions across the district, through a combination of layoffs, retirements and canceling unfilled positions.

The one-time cash infusion will help extend several staff positions for one more school year, and maintain a fund that helps offset staff cuts, said Superintendent Brian Ewert.

“The cuts will be painful no matter what,” Ewert said at the meet- Ewert ing. “This is about how to make the most impact to our system during this difficult time.”

The district may go before voters this fall to ask for a mill levy override, said board chair Jack Reutzel, though Ewert said the district won’t begin

public polling on a possible ballot measure for a few more months.

The budget shortfall is partly the result of dwindling funds from a mill levy override passed in 2009, according to district documents.

The rest of the shortfall is the result of a combination of factors, according to a district news release: First, an ongoing withholding of state education funding called the “negative factor.”

The withholding, an outgrowth of budget woes during the Great Recession, has shortchanged LPS by $110 million over the past eight years, according to the news release, including $9 million in the 2020-21 school year.

Other factors include rising costs in health care, special education, transportation and employee retirement funding; maintaining competitive teacher pay; and flat enrollment rates causing stagnant per-pupil funding, according to the district.

Though voters in 2018 approved a $298 million bond, that money can legally only be used for capital projects like school construction or upgrades, Ewert said. Marijuana tax revenue is not nearly as fruitful as popularly believed, he said, and currently pays the salary of one substance abuse counselor.

The 17 positions to be cut include six retiring employees, nine who will be laid off, and two vacant positions that won’t be filled, according to an email provided by Ewert.

The retiring employees include the director of learning services, the coordinator of the gifted and talented program, a special education instructional coach, an executive administrative assistant, an assistant superintendent and the coordinator of Career and Technical Education.

The employees who will be laid off include the district’s chief information officer, a tech support specialist, a special assignment math teacher, two administrative assistants, a data submission specialist, a wellness coordinator, a terminal manager and a carpenter.

The vacant positions that won’t be filled are a human resources specialist and literary specialist.

The money pulled from the district’s savings account, which leaves more than $11 million in reserves in two funds, allows the district to maintain the salary of a special assignment health teacher, maintain some middle school and high school coaches and school deans at part time, and maintain a pool of money used to mitigate funding challenges that arise through the year due to changes in enrollment.

The board settled at the $1 million plan after being presented with a range of scenarios to pull money from reserves, ranging from $571,000 to $1.3 million.

Reutzel said he was concerned a one-time cash infusion was “destined to break hearts down the road.”

“We’re talking about a bridge,” Reutzel said. “This is getting us one more year to the idea that this community might support a mill levy override, or something miraculous happens.”

Reutzel said he had more faith in local voters approving a mill levy override than the state coming to the rescue.

Board member Kelly Perez argued in favor of going for the highest amount, saying the budget items that could be supported were too important to shortchange. The $1.3 million plan included more money for coaching and a higher amount allocated to the offset fund, called “pool points.”

“If we’re going to do it, if we’re going to bridge the gap, all that is extremely important,” Perez said.

Board member Carrie Warren-Gully expressed trepidation over spending reserves at all, saying she worried a bigger need might come along.

“The reserves are in place for a very good reason, because there are a lot of unknowns,” Warren-Gully said. “You need to have reserves in order to claw back the money your budget was built on.”

The governor’s visit came a day after the Littleton Public Schools Board of Education voted to pull $1 million out of district reserves to soften the blow of $4.2 million in budget cuts that will see 17 positions eliminated district-wide.

The cuts are driven in part by state money withheld from school districts since the Great Recession, according to a district news release. Some Littleton school board members said not to expect the Polis administration to make great strides toward paying down the so-called “negative factor” in school funding, as the governor’s administration stays focused on expanding kindergarten and preschool access.

Polis said his administration has worked hard to pay down the negative factor as much as possible while ensuring young children have access to important resources.

“Education is our top funding priority,” Polis said. “We delivered record funding for public schools last year, and we look forward to continuing that.”

Bridges said while Colorado still needs substantial boosts of investment in public schools, preschool and kindergarten can make an outsize difference.

“When you talk about making

sure we create a level playing field for kids, there’s no better dollar we can spend than early childhood education,” Bridges said.

Froelich said the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, or TABOR, and other state laws restrain Colorado education spending, but said proposed legislation to boost mill levy overrides could help pay down the negative factor.

“Our schools are doing amazing things with less and less, while we ask more and more of them,” Froelich said. “There are conversations moving about how to address this. I do think early childhood education pays off in the long run.”

Littleton Public Schools Superintendent Brian Ewert said preschool is a worthy investment.

“If you want to change the trajectory of a kid who comes from a difficult situation or poverty, getting them in preschool early is the best bang for your buck,” Ewert said.

Still, Ewert said he’s concerned about how to pay for it all.

“Whatever we can do to further early childhood education, it can’t be at the expense of K-12 education,” Ewert said. “There’s only a limited pot of money, and if we start diluting that, it will destroy K-12. I applaud that early childhood is the big initiative, if the state can come up with ongoing money to pay for it. I think we’d better go slow to make sure we get it right.”

Women’s fitness center finds new home Camp MissFits, now in Woodlawn, focuses on mind, body, spirit

From humble beginnings, Camp MissFits is reaching new heights.

The women’s fitness center, founded in 2006 by Priscilla Freed, started out meeting in public parks. After years in a cramped studio near downtown Littleton, the center started 2020 in a sprawling new space in the Woodlawn Shopping Center at Littleton Boulevard and Windermere Street.

The new space means a lot for the center’s clients, who live up to the name “MissFits,” Freed said.

“We’re not about hotties in booty shorts and full makeup,” Freed said. “We’re ladies of all shapes and sizes, and MissFits is a home away from home for a lot of them. This is our place.”

Freed focuses on a holistic approach to women’s fitness, she said, meaning it’s not just about losing weight, but also working on a client’s mindset

and relationships.

“If you’re stressed about money, do you want to eat a salad, or do you want wine and chocolate?” Freed said. “Your mental state has a trickle-down effect on your health, and on those around you. It’s all tied together.”

The approach made all the difference to Svetlana Merten, who said she’s slimmed down from a size 14 to a size 2 since starting at Camp MissFits in early 2018.

“I realized I couldn’t do it myself,” Merten said. “I needed somebody strong to keep pushing me.”

Merten, a native of Belarus, said the American lifestyle makes it tough to stay in shape.

“The food here has more preservatives,” she said. “You have to drive everywhere. Here, you have to make time to maintain your health. Priscilla gives me a place to do that.”

The new facility is a reflection of Camp MissFits’ positive, accepting atmosphere, said trainer Jess Gerard, who’s been with the company since the park days.

“The thing we hear the most is that women aren’t judged here,” Gerard said. “This space shows that we’re reaching people, and that we can lift each other up.

We’ve got freedom. We’ve got a home.”

Littleton tea shop to feature national art exhibit iN-TEA reveals ‘Share’ sculpture by Mexico City-based artist Anuar Maauad STAFF REPORT

A tea shop in downtown Littleton is one of the buildings in the Denver area that received a small-scale bronze sculptural phrase from Mexico City-based artist Anuar Maauad and The Black Cube.

Part of the “Share” series of installations, the sculptural phrase at iN-TEA, 2440 W. Main St., Littleton, was put up Jan. 19. Other locations for the sculptures are dispersed throughout the Denver metro area and include residences, businesses, coffee shops, nonprofit organizations, offices, fences and more.

The sculptures are small, with each letter measuring 2 inches tall. This is intentional, as the works are intended to encourage curiosity and be surprises to passersby, according to information from the Black Cube website.

The sculptural phrase mim-

ics the thick, geometric, slab serif font and gold coloring of the Trump Tower sign, and Maauad’s sculptures relay an uplifting message: “To share is precious, pure, and fair.”

The phrase is a lyric from “I Want You” by American singer and songwriter Marvin Gaye. In doing so, the artist transforms an icon synonymous with power into an artwork that symbolizes kindness, the website said.

By engaging numerous public sites throughout the city and encouraging members of the community to disseminate a positive anecdote, the artist is acting out the message of his work, the release said. The sculptural phrases will remain gifts to participants who agree to publicly display the artwork for at least one year.

The district shouldn’t expect too much help battling budget issues from the administration of Gov. Jared Polis, Warren-Gully said, saying the governor’s priorities are clearly on expanding kindergarten and preschool.

Board member Lindley McCrary said the $1 million scenario was a good compromise.

“There are so many things on the table that bring value to the system that I’d have a hard time saying those need to go,” McCrary said.

Board member Robert Reichardt said while he agreed with Warren-Gully that maintaining robust reserves is important, he was confident that the remainder was sufficient to deal with “the vagaries of life.”

“We’ll still have more than $10 million in the bank, which I feel is a reasonable, appropriate cushion,” Reichardt said.

SouthGlenn Macy’s lease extended to 2022 After Sears shuttered, possible closure has loomed for other anchor

The lease for Macy’s at The Streets at SouthGlenn was recently extended through early 2022, a corporate representative said, lending a breath of life to a store whose years appear to be numbered.

But Blair Fasbender Rosenberg, the corporate spokeswoman, declined to comment on whether the Macy’s at SouthGlenn is still expected to permanently close within the next four years or so.

That’s about as far as the property owner, Alberta Development Partners, expects the store to last. Alberta also controls nearly all of the rest of SouthGlenn, Centennial’s most prominent shopping development, at East Arapahoe Road and South University Boulevard.

Donald Provost, founding principal with Alberta, said in early 2019 that he’d be surprised if the Macy’s was still running in five years. Provost didn’t respond to a question of whether the two-year lease extension means the Macy’s is expected to permanently close in 2022. Alberta was

closed through much of Dec. 23 to Jan. 1 during the holidays.

SouthGlenn was originally the large, indoor Southglenn Mall built in the 1970s, and the Sears and Macy’s were components of that mall. The Sears closed near the end of 2018.

SouthGlenn’s outdoor shopping center layout replaced the former mall in 2009.

The Macy’s building was constructed in 1981, according to Arapahoe County assessor’s records. Macy’s West Stores Inc. sold it to Alberta in February 2018 for $10 million, records show.

The outdoor mall is a top source of tax revenue for the city, but it’s pulling in a smaller proportion of funds than it used to. Fighting vacancies and facing down a possible Macy’s closure, developers want to try to revitalize the mall with more apartments and other uses. Because they want to change the mix of types of properties allowed, their plans need the city’s approval.

Formal plans aren’t expected to reach a city council vote for months.

The former Sears property is owned

by Northwood Investors, which wants to add apartments there. Alberta wants to put apartments and office space, and possibly retail and entertainment establishments, where Macy’s stands.

With more than 460 people on his group’s newsletter mailing list, he urged his audience to support the push.

But the city can’t make a decision until developers formally submit their plans, so there hasn’t been anything to petition at this point, according to Allison Wittern, Centennial spokeswoman.

Phelps said the Macy’s renewal isn’t changing his plans.

“I don’t think the extension has much impact on our larger concerns

regarding the redevelopment plans and our fight,” Phelps said. “We remain poised and continue to prepare to fight against redeveloping the former Sears property into high-density residential at the expense” of existing retail space.

Residents are primarily concerned about the potential for more traffic around the mall. They also object to the possibility of apartment buildings across the street from the less dense neighborhood nearby.

Speakers at a Nov. 19 meeting at Powell Middle School — where city staff and developers sought to collect feedback on the plans — didn’t deny that traffic would increase, but they emphasized a key statistic from a traffic impact study by Felsburg, Holt and Ullevig, an engineering and planning firm.

The study found that along Arapahoe Road, University Boulevard, Easter Avenue and Race Street — which form SouthGlenn’s perimeter — most areas along SouthGlenn would see less than a 10% increase in traffic during morning and afternoon rush hours as a result of the proposed project.

It also looked at “cut-through traffic” in nearby neighborhood streets, noting: “A review of existing traffic counts indicates that less than 5% of the trips from the Streets at Southglenn currently travel between the development and each of the neighborhoods surrounding the project site.”

Maybe syllables governed the world in the 17th cenQUIET tury, but lately they have been treated DESPERATION with impudence and disrespect in the name of convenience.

There are those who think as Selden did and quite a few of them are within the sound of my voice: namely the “Quiet Desperation” readers Craig Marshall who entered my annual haiku contest.

Smith This column highlights some of the best entries.

While I encouraged a wide range of themes, the majority of the haiku I

received focused on the new year, and it was understandable. Last year was not Miss America, particularly in the final weeks during the impeachment hearings.

Then, guess what? The new year starts off with a bang, as it were, in Iran and international tension is on high alert.

Seventeen-syllable poems might seem like butterflies in a tornado right now, but I think they are reminders of the sustenance in human creativity.

She wrote: “Des Moines, Iowa / Castle Rock, Colorado / We found a new home.”

Look at little “Iowa.” It uses up three syllables all by itself.

What are the longest one-syllable words? “Stretched,” “scrounged,” and “scratched.”

ment agencies help find housing and employment, alleviating societal burdens. Our own Littleton Immigrant Resources Center and Immigration Pathways Colorado further support integration of refugees into the community. The attack by Fey on Immigration Pathways chair Susan Thornton, incorrectly accusing her of pushing the resolution onto council’s agenda, was inexcusable.

The 1980 Refugee Act has succeeded in both Democratic and Republican administrations. Refugees typically flee certain death due to war, famine, violent crime or persecution. They undergo rigorous screening while living outside the U.S. before admittance.

Ancestors of council members and citizens who argued against the resolution likely came here for similar reasons that refugees seek entry today.

I wonder whether these ancestors

pique my interest and I think they are very cool. What I am referring to are the disruptors out there who are thinking differently and very strategically, and before anyone else does.

Some of my favorites to follow on social media are the new and emerging thought leaders around disruption.

Just visit any of the sites and search on disruption or disruptors, futurists, changing the conversation, and other similar tags and you will find some amazing thinking, disruptive thinking. The kind of disruptive thinking that could lead to domination and success.

And what do I mean by domination?

Domination is not just for big companies, professional teams, or individual performers. Domination could be for every size company and for each one of us too. Dominating a local market by being a bit disruptive. Breaking a bad habit, through a disruptive and new or better habit. Dominating other poor practices that we follow and want to change by stretching the boundaries of our thinking. We all have the capacity to make new decisions based on new information, and maybe our input

Jeff May & Karen Crossen Littleton Inappropriate actions At the Jan. 7 Littleton City Council meeting, my council representative, Carol Fey, failed to follow council procedures. Fey verbally attacked one of her constituents from the dias, by name, without giving her a chance to respond. I hope the rest of her constituents will not be silent and will not be silenced by their representative using her “bully pulpit” to intimidate citizens she disagrees with.

The issue Fey spoke against was regarding the city passing a resolution to consent to the resettlement of refugees in Littleton, just as we have historically done. Littleton has a long and proud history of welcoming immigrants because we recognize the huge contributions they make to our community. For example, one of the needs a dose of disruptive thinking.

I was surprised to see the resolution narrowly pass 4-3 when every other Colorado community passed similar resolutions unanimously. I was also disappointed by some of the offensive and misguided comments made by some citizens, and especially, council member Fey. Her suggestion

that council should not take a stance on “national political hot potato” was illogical.

Had this resolution failed, Littleton would be in the national news just as Texas is for Gov. Abbott taking the drastic stance of opting out of the refugee resettlement program.

Additionally, council member Fey’s inappropriate personal attack on former Mayor Susan Thornton was unnecessary and unprofessional.

Our community deserves to have elected officials who behave in a manner befitting their positions and who are prepared at council meetings by thoroughly understanding the issues beforehand. Some of the behaviors I’ve observed over the past few months are disconcerting. I hope this new council can come together and behave professionally in order to make important positive decisions for our community like the refugee resettlement resolution!

t all started with a state parks pass.

Areli Alcazar, a teacher at Kenton Elementary School in Aurora, stopped by the Schlessman branch of Denver Public Library a couple years ago, where a librarian told her DPL checks out passes to Colorado State Parks.

Before long, Alcazar and her family were hitting the trails in Roxborough and Chatfield state parks for the first time, toting a library-provided knapsack filled with binoculars, field guides and other gear.

“The pass gave us an incentive to be adventurous,” Alcazar said.

When she dropped off the pass at the library, she asked what else the library had to offer. The answers are still unfolding, and Alcazar is hooked.

An avid biker, Alcazar uses the library’s bike repair kits. Her desk is scattered with keepsakes and doohickeys she’s 3D-printed at Denver library makerspaces. She learned to sew LED lights into clothing. She helped her mom test the efficiency of her home appliances with a power check meter.

She and her friends check out passes to local museums. Now, when she’s bored, Alcazar said she drops into a library and asks what they can teach her today.

“If it’s all at our disposal,” Alcazar said, “why not try it out?”

‘The sky’s the limit’ Across the Denver metro area, libraries are redefining themselves, with innovative offerings meant to expand minds and lives.

“When people say libraries are obsolete, we say, ‘Are they? Let’s find out,’ ” said Anthony White, the manager of web systems for Arapahoe Libraries, which operates eight branches in Arapahoe County.

The district now features three recording studios outfitted with green screen walls and video and audio editing software. The Koelbel branch has a 39-seat theater available for plays, films and performances. The Castlewood branch will reopen in April with a purpose-built makerspace, featuring 3D printers, laser cutters, a ceramic kiln and more — double the size of the old makerspace, housed in a repurposed conference room.

“We really want to explore all the roles a library can play in a community,” White said. “The sky’s the limit.”

For some, that can mean learning skills that are otherwise out of reach.

Colorado residents can get library cards for most of the state’s library districts for free. Most require a photo ID and proof of address.

The vast majority of library services, including state parks passes, museum passes, access to makerspaces and nontraditional items, are available for no charge. Some libraries may impose time or quantity limits on items like 3D printers that use consumable materials.

Numerous local library districts offer a wide array of services, including personalized book and movie recommendations, access to research databases, streaming movies and documentaries, classes, clubs and connections to other community services.

Many local library districts are now finefree, meaning they only impose fees for lost or damaged materials. Fine-free library districts include Jefferson County Libraries, Arapahoe Libraries and Denver Public Library.

Duesberry art Works by the prominent Greenwood Village painter Joellyn T. Duesberry (1944-2016) are displayed at Lone Tree Arts Center through March 28. Fairy tale princesses have long been part and parcel of our literary and social fabric, as they were cre-

ated from ancient folk tales — and have more recently evolved through Disney films and now, via “Disenchanted,” an off-Broadway hit, which shifts them into feminist folk!

The composer/playwright is Dennis T. Gialcino, who developed this new musical with off-Broadway director Fiely Matias, perhaps stepping on some toes along the way …

She bought $15 worth of raw wool online, then headed to Castlewood Library to process it on a drum carding machine.

“I could invest $15 to learn something new,” Roberts said. “What I couldn’t do was invest $300 in classes and studio time. The library staff walked me through it — there’s only so much you can learn from a book.”

For others, it can mean a welcome reprieve when life throws them a curveball.

Anthony Montoya, a tax attorney in Castle Rock, found himself jobless when his law firm laid off his division.

“I was on my own all of a sudden, and everybody said I needed a commercial,” Montoya said. “Studios wanted to charge a lot of money, but the library in Parker had a green room, cameras and editing software.”

A Douglas County librarian gave Montoya and his wife a crash course in the equipment, and over a couple visits, he produced his own commercial.

“Another attorney told me recently they really liked my commercial, and asked who I hired to make it,” Montoya said. “I was pretty tickled by that.”

‘A beautiful thing’ New library offerings can be a powerful force for self-sufficiency, said Ashley Kazyaka, the program coordinator for Denver Public Library’s

IdeaLAB, a group of makerspaces spread throughout the DPL system.

“I think there’s a beautiful thing that happens when you learn to do something yourself,” said Kazyaka, amid a hum of activity in the Central Branch’s IdeaLAB. “People can come in here and learn to sew on buttons or fix their cell phones. We’ve even had people experiencing homelessness who come in and 3D-print replacement parts for their backpacks. The ability to solve problems can translate into bigger things in people’s lives.”

At a nearby sewing machine, Markie Arendelle sat at a sewing machine, repairing a rip in his winter coat.

“This place is empowering,” said Arendelle, a singer and DJ. “I’m selfemployed, and here I can print my stickers and iron-on patches — it saves me so much money.”

Libraries can also give people a chance to try out tech and toys they might not otherwise have access to, said Andrea Wyant, a collection devel-

opment librarian for Douglas County Libraries.

Wyant heads the district’s “nontraditional items” collection, where patrons can check out items ranging from high-end digital cameras, virtual reality headsets and karaoke machines to digital projectors and retro video game consoles.

“We can give people access to things they can use and return without cluttering up their houses or unnecessarily duplicating things,” Wyant said.

“Sharing is caring. How much stuff do we all need in our lives?”

Looking to the future A wide range of new offerings doesn’t mean libraries are skimping on the reading material, said Donna Walker, the executive director of Jefferson County Libraries. In fact, she said, they’re exploring new ways to deliver that, too.

Jeffco’s libraries are expanding their e-book offerings, and for those

who prefer the printed page, they’re rolling out Redbox-like book vending machines and Amazon-style lockers. Patrons can also schedule home or office visits from librarians who specialize in fields like academics or business.

Meanwhile, Jeffco is in the process of remodeling all 10 of its branches, including, yes, more makerspaces.

“We want to stay a step ahead of the community,” Walker said. “A decade ago, people said: ‘Who goes to the library anymore?’ Now, we’re hearing from people who have cards to five different local library systems.”

Walker said in a time of expansion, it’s important that libraries endear themselves to the community. While the economy is hot now, they’ve got to prepare in case things get tight.

“During the recession, libraries faced a lot of hardships,” Walker said.

“Hours were cut. Positions were cut.

Our job is to manage our growth and our finances, and build relationships.

Libraries are an essential service.

They’re part of the bedrock of democracy.”

The big picture, Walker said, is that libraries are expanding beyond the buildings they’re housed in.

“We talk about the library being everywhere,” Walker said. “Libraries can be in your pocket. We can come to you.”

While libraries don’t charge users for services, Walker said, everyone chips in.

“People are paying for this through their taxes,” Walker said. “You might as well use what you’re paying for.”

South Suburban looking for art-on-loan applicants District’s public art committee seeks sculptures for display at Goodson STAFF REPORT

South Suburban Parks and Recreation and the South Suburban Public Art Committee are looking for artists in the community to apply for the art-on-loan program.

The deadline to apply is Feb. 11.

The committee recommends three sculptures to be displayed at Goodson Recreation Center’s courtyard and entryway, and two sculptures for dispay at Hudson Gardens and Event Center. The sculptures must be approved by the South Suburban board of directors.

The art-on-loan program is a year-long outdoor exhibit (June 2020 to June 2021) designed to promote public interest in art, develop community pride and enhance the visitor experience at Goodson Recreation Center and Hudson Gardens. The artistowned sculptures will be displayed for one year. Sculptures are selected by the public art committee and Hudson Gardens.

Applicants must be Colorado residents, and sculptures must meet the site requirements and remain on display for one year.

All sculptures must be for sale. Each artist receives a $500 honorarium for their display. South Suburban receives a 20 percent commission on sculptures sold through the program.

Hoops player sets high standard Q&A with Sagrillo-Smiley Who is your favorite athlete and why?

LeBron James, because he is such a machine. He is always going and he is so inspiring.

What or who motivates you most to excel in basketball?

My mom and my greatgrandmother. She (greatgrandmother) has been at every one of my games ever since I started playing. I have her name on my chest.

That’s what my mom points to if I’m not having my best game. She points to my chest because I have her (greatgrandmother’s) name there.

What is tough about playing defense?

Sometimes you don’t get a right call, you have to stay mentally tough and try to play the best defense you can.

T

ayvis Sagrillo-Smiley refused to stop taking practice shots at the basket, and he is one of the 4A Jeffco League’s best shooters this season.

Littleton High School’s Sagrillo-Smiley was the leading scorer in the Jeffco League after 11 games, and his 58 shooting percentage was tops among the top 36 players listed in the league’s scoring statistics.

“I’ve been working on my shot,” said Sagrillo-Smiley. “Every day I’m in the

gym I just want to get my shot better because you don’t take breaks. If you want a good shot, it is something you have to consistently work on. I have consistently worked on that for a while and it is starting to show now.”

It took some time to develop, but Sagrillo-Smiley has changed his shot.

“My shot has come a long way,” he said. “It is a lot more efficient. I’ve had to change it a couple times. There was a time I had to catch it right to shoot it a certain way — otherwise, it just would not feel right. The other time I had to change it was how I brought it down. I would never just catch and shoot.”

COACH’S TAKE: ‘He’s got everything you need on the floor. He has every skill, he’s got every tool. He’s very dedicated and extremely hard on himself. That’s the one thing that drives him to be great, but it is also something he has to keep an eye on. He can score, defend and rebound.’

Poetry. I like my own little way of writing things down.

I feel like with poetry you can write down anything you want and it is not wrong.

What is your favorite basketball moment at Littleton?

Last year when we won our Senior Night game against Green Mountain. It was a really big game and we were all dialed in together.

Right when I needed those free throws to go in, they went in.

What is the toughest thing about playing basketball?

Usually the toughest thing for me was always a mental thing. Just to be mentally strong if something didn’t go just the way I wanted, just sort of staying in the game and brushing it off my shoulder.

Unified programs help make world a kinder place

T

here seems to be a culture that has developed around unified sports programs in the state.

Unified sports programs join youngsters with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. Unified is a division of Special Olympics.

Legend, Chaparral, Regis Jesuit and Smoky Hill were among the eight Colorado high schools to be named 2019 National Banner Unified Champion schools.

Legend has 15 disabled athletes, and the OVERTIME able-bodied kids that volunteer to help are called partners.

Legend has five unified sports (soccer, basketball, flag football, bowling and track Jim Benton and field) and hopes to add cheerleading to the list Shelly Boyd is the unified coach and Significant Support Needs teacher at Legend, and has two assistant coaches in Karen Forbes and Jeremy Dorr.

“We get partners through word of mouth,” said Boyd.

“Jeremy and I started with no partners and then we went to five and we have 60 now. Sometimes we feel like we don’t have enough sports because we have so many partners.

“It has just turned into a beautiful program. It’s just the culture we have in the building.

In the classroom we call them peer aides, so some of them are peer aides and partners, they get to know the kids and fall in love with the kids. We are blessed that we have a school that supports us. We are treated like any other sports program at the school.”

Larry Bull is the Cherry Creek district athletic director, and all the district schools have unified programs.

involved, the happiness, the kindness and inclusion. It’s a difference maker. It’s one of the best things we do.

“When you start talking unified sports, take it out into the hallway, where you see kids walking down the hall high-fiving kids with disabilities because of the unified programs.”

The Colorado High School Activities Association will sanction unified bowling as a sport next year and the CHSAA has matches, races and games at many of its events.

“People are recognizing there are kiddos within their schools that can participate on different levels and are going out and seeking them,” said CHSAA Assistant Commissioner Jenn Roberts-Uhling.

And Boyd points out that all participants are rewarded.

“They (disabled players) love it and the parents love it,” she said. “The parents are just so thankful. The students with disabilities want to be just like every other kid out there. When they get to be around partners, they are just their friends, they don’t see a difference.

“We think the neurotypical kids are helping the kids with disabilities. It turns around where the disability kids have helped them become better people.”

Athletes of the Year Anna Hall and Cohlton Schultz will be honored at the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet on April 23.

Hall, of Valor Christian, is the high school girls Athlete of the Year. She won

January 23, 2020J two individual medals plus ran on two title relay teams at last spring’s state track meet and earlier set a national high school heptathlon indoor record. She is now on the track team at Georgia.

Schultz was a four-time state wrestling champion at Ponderosa and went 188-2 with 115 pins in high school as a 285-pounder and heavyweight. He is now at Arizona State.

Honor roll Each week, performances of South Metro athletes and teams will be highlighted. This week’s performances were selected from games, matches and meets held between Jan.10 and Jan. 16.

Senior Kobe Sanders scored 40 points as Chaparral, ranked 10th in the CHSAANow. com poll, defeated No. 5 Columbine in a Jan. 14 boys basketball game.

Cali Clark scored 19 points and Jana Van Gytenbeek added 18 as Cherry Creek, the top-ranked girls 5A basketball team, rallied to down fourth-ranked Highlands Ranch, 53-49, on Jan. 10. Taylor Ray of Highlands Ranch took scoring honors with 21 points.

Calvin Root had two goals and two assists to lead the Mountain Vista hockey team to a 6-3 win over Battle Mountain on Jan. 16.

Heritage won the Smoky Hill Invitational girls swim meet on Jan. 11 as Inge Ehm took first in the 100 butterfly, Aislyn Barnett in the 100 breaststroke and Anna Hall in the 200 IM. Junior Aj Kula had 18 points, which included four 3-point baskets, six assists and two steals, in Valor Christian’s 71-62 boys basketball win over Rock Canyon on Jan. 14.

Whiz Kids Tutoring: Help at-risk elementary and middle school kids improve their lives through academic tutoring, positive mentoring relationships and spiritual nurture.

Need: Tutors to work one-on-one with elementary students at tutoring sites in Littleton and throughout the metro area. October to April. Once a week, afternoon or evening sites, Monday through Thursday. One hour of tutoring followed by a 30-minute club where kids get to learn about Jesus.

Requirements: You just need to be able to read, love a child and pass the background check.
