Expectations were already high for Platte Canyon junior Chyann Kelly. She is, after all, the leading returning scorer for the Huskies after averaging 11.9 points per game a season ago while also leading the team in assists from her point guard position. Now, second-year Platte Canyon head coach Reesha Curtis is expecting even more out of her captain in 2021. “We hope she’ll be leading by example,” Curtis said. “We had a very lengthy talk about that last season well before all of this chaos (with COVID-19) would occur. … She’s a hard worker. She is going to continually improve on her game, really bring up her game to the next level. We hope she’ll truly embrace the leadership role and, as a result, use her love of the game to fuel those around her.” “She’s right on the cusp now as a junior,” Curtis acknowledged. “She’s getting comfortable in the leadership
role. She knows her place and she’s pushing the others (on the team).” Curtis thinks that with age and maturity — as Kelly has developed as a player the last two years — that she can be the catalyst for Platte Canyon that Mikylah Espinosa was for Academy last year en route to winning league MVP honors. Kelly, however, won’t have Aspen Riesberg alongside to help carry that load in 2021. Riesberg, who led Platte Canyon in scoring a season ago with 12.3 points per game, transferred to Nebraska, Curtis said. Her absence leaves a huge void. “She was definitely a big part of the team and somebody I could rely on,” said Kelly, who remains hopeful that with the influx of freshmen coming in this season that the Huskies will find a suitable replacement for Riesberg.
